According to reports, the “Soma Obi” hitmaker was scheduled to begin his performance at 7 PM but only appeared on stage at 5 AM.

In the viral footage, as Black Sherif was being drenched with water, he urged the fans to direct their frustration at the event promoters as well.

Dr Mahamadu Bawumia is the former Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia is the former Vice President

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed optimism about leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to victory in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a meeting with 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on Monday, June 23, 2025, the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer compared his current political situation to that of President John Dramani Mahama, who successfully returned from opposition to win the 2024 election.

“If John Mahama can come back after 2016 and win the 2024 election, I can come back after 2024 and win,” he stated.

The meeting comes just days after Dr Bawumia hosted over 60 NPP Members of Parliament at his campaign office, where they publicly declared their support for his bid to become the party’s flagbearer once again.

The former MMDCEs, who served under previous NPP administrations between 2017 and 2024, are expected to discuss campaign strategies and officially throw their weight behind Dr Bawumia ahead of the party’s crucial internal presidential primaries, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Ghana to become West Africa’s assembling hub with Chinese Support – Julius Debrah

Julius Debrah is Ghana's Chief of Staff Julius Debrah is Ghana’s Chief of Staff

Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has disclosed the government’s plans to attract more Chinese manufacturers to establish assembly plants in the country.

According to him, this initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s position as a manufacturing and export hub for the West African region.

“Ghana is not a bad place to do business after all. The 100 [Chinese companies] that are already here wouldn’t have come if it were otherwise. What we intend to do, or what the President envisions, is to encourage as many Chinese manufacturers as possible to consider setting up assembly plants or establishing new entities in Ghana,” he stated.

Speaking at the opening of the Ghana-China Business Summit 2025 on Monday, June 23, 2025, Debrah explained that relocating manufacturing closer to West African markets would help companies reduce logistical challenges and overcome market barriers.

“You get closer to the market, where you’ll also be permitted to export to the entire West African zone,” he added.

He also outlined a range of sectors where foreign investment would be particularly encouraged, including petrochemicals, housing, automobile manufacturing, electric vehicles (EVs), and tourism.

Debrah further assured potential Chinese investors of full government support. “Any Chinese entity willing to establish a manufacturing plant in Ghana will be welcomed, encouraged, supported, and pushed to succeed,” he said.

Ghanaians stunned as Sulley Muntari speaks fluent Twi on live TV

McBrown (L) and Muntari (R) during the show McBrown (L) and Muntari (R) during the show

Former Black Stars player Sulley Ali Muntari has become the centre of conversation on social media after making a surprise revelation during an appearance on Nana Ama McBrown’s cooking show, McBrown’s Kitchen.

The 2010 UEFA Champions League winner stunned both the host and viewers when he comfortably spoke fluent Twi on the live show, contrary to long-held public perception that he couldn’t speak the local dialect.

During their chat, McBrown, visibly surprised, paused to ask if Muntari was indeed fluent in Twi, referencing circulating reports that suggested otherwise.

Muntari responded with a smile and dropped the quote that has since gone viral.

“How can someone from Kumasi not speak Twi? I almost became a linguist,” he said.

The moment caught many off guard, especially given Muntari’s typically reserved media presence and limited public interviews in local languages.

McBrown, taken aback by the revelation, exclaimed in disbelief, noting how effortlessly Muntari navigated the language throughout the conversation.

Since the show aired, many Ghanaians have taken to social media to express shock and admiration, with clips of the moment trending on various platforms.

The video has sparked humorous debates and renewed interest in Muntari’s background and upbringing in Kumasi.

For fans used to seeing Muntari as the stern midfield general on the pitch, this warm, humorous side, delivered in flawless Twi, was a refreshing surprise.

Police officers charged with murder of Kenyan blogger

Three police officers in Kenya have been charged with the murder of a 31-year-old blogger who died in police custody earlier this month.

Albert Ojwang’s death has sparked outrage in Kenya, with protests held to demand justice.

Mr Ojwang was arrested after Kenya’s deputy police chief Eliud Lagat filed a complaint, accusing the blogger of defaming him on social media.

Mr Lagat stepped aside last week pending the outcome of investigations into Ojwang’s death. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The three police officers – Samson Kiprotich, Talaam James Mukhwana and Peter Kimani – were charged along with three civilians.

All six appeared in court on Monday, but have not yet pleaded.

Police initially said that Mr Ojwang died of self-inflicted wounds, but were forced to retract the statement after an autopsy found that he was likely to have died from assault wounds.

A street vendor was shot during a demonstration last week in the capital, Nairobi, over Mr Ojwang’s death, sparking renewed outrage from Kenyans who accuse police of using excessive force against protesters.

Boniface Kariuki was reportedly selling masks when a uniformed police officer fired a bullet at close range, critically injuring him.

Activists have called for a “total shutdown” of the economy on Wednesday as they step up protests against police brutality, and mark a year since the security forces opened fire on crowds protesting against an increases in taxes.

Latif Abubakar urges filmmakers to spotlight Ghanaian culture

Ghanaian playwright Latif Abubakar has called on filmmakers to move beyond the usual stories centred on love, crime, and rituals.

According to him, the Ghanaian movie industry needs to throw a spotlight on Ghana’s cultural heritage.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Latif Abubakar said filmmakers must start telling stories that reflect the identity of Ghana.

He explained that the country has many cultural practices, festivals, and traditions that can be used to create impactful movies.

He pointed out examples such as the rites of passage practised in the Northern Region of Ghana and the many traditional festivals celebrated across the country.

According to him, these films will not just be beautiful to watch, but they will also have great educational value.

“We have a wealth of untapped stories rooted in our traditions, from Northern Ghana’s rites of passage to vibrant regional festivals. Imagine the visual richness and educational value these narratives could bring. They resonate not just with Ghana, but with universal themes of humanity and pride,” he stated.

Latif Abubakar explained that filmmakers should not fear that cultural stories will not sell, he believes that if these stories are well-written and properly produced, they can be just as successful as love or crime stories.

“Well-crafted cultural narratives can achieve commercial success while making a social impact,” he stated.

According to the playwright, the problem is not that these cultural stories are boring, it is that they are not being told at all, or are only added as a minor part of a film.

“It’s time we stopped treating culture as an afterthought in filmmaking. The global audience is craving authentic African stories. Why should Nigeria or South Africa lead the charge when Ghana has equally compelling narratives? It starts with us, with our storytellers making a deliberate shift,” he stressed.

The playwright also encouraged filmmakers to work together rather than compete. He said collaboration is key to the growth of the creative industry.

“Collaboration is strength, not weakness. When creatives unite, we achieve more, whether pooling technical skills, expanding audiences or attracting funding. A competitive mindset is what holds many back,” he advised.

Declaring state of emergency premature – Gbande

0

Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has cautioned against hastily declaring a state of emergency over illegal mining activities, despite growing calls from environmentalists, civil society organisations and sections of the public.

The calls come in response to the persistent degradation of river bodies and forest reserves due to illegal mining, widely known as “galamsey.”

Gbande, who also serves as the Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), said the government is already taking decisive and tactical measures to combat the crisis.

“We shouldn’t be so quick to call for a state of emergency. This is not something you simply impose. Look at the situation today, forest reserves have effectively become no-go areas. We have witnessed calculated, precise military operations targeting these hotspots. The evidence is clear: many of these forest reserves are being reclaimed,” he said.

Gbande defended the government’s approach, insisting that institutions mandated to tackle the issue are functioning with renewed effectiveness.

“We are making sure that the responsible institutions are not only functioning but operating more effectively than ever before. Would you say we are doing nothing? Should we suddenly declare a state of emergency now, when the cedi is stabilising and the economy is showing signs of revival largely thanks to gold regulations?”

He further reiterated the government’s commitment to accountability and enforcement of the law in the fight against illegal mining. Gbande emphasised the need for a measured and coordinated response rather than rash decisions that may not yield lasting results.

“The government has made it absolutely clear that anyone involved in illegal mining will face the full force of the law. It is therefore incumbent upon all of us to expose those, both within and outside government, who have engaged in or supported illegal mining. This is a matter we must handle with tact,” he stressed in an interview on Joy News on Monday, June 23.

President Bio of Sierra Leone elected new ECOWAS Chairman

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 23, GNA – Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio was on Sunday elected Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.

He was elected the 67th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS in Abuja, Nigeria.

President Bio, who will be serving a one-year term in the rotating chairmanship, takes over from President Ahmed Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, amid growing challenges in the subregion.

President Bio, a former Brigadier General, briefly served as military head of state in 1996.

He transitioned to civilian leadership, winning the Sierra Leonean presidential election in 2018 and securing re-election in 2023 amidst significant political contestation.

His ascension to the ECOWAS chairmanship comes at a crucial juncture for the regional bloc.

President Bio inherits a complex geopolitical landscape marked by lingering post-election tensions in his own country, including alleged coup attempts and the continued exile of his predecessor, former President Bai Koroma, in Nigeria.

The formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and their subsequent withdrawal from ECOWAS, has further compounded the challenges facing ECOWAS.

President John Dramani Mahama, who participated in the Abuja Summit, has since returned home.

A cross section of the beneficiaries

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has admitted that government cannot single-handedly manage the cost of providing and delivering quality and equitable education for the youth.

He has, therefore, commended Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for investing over $15 million in supporting education of over 2,736 students in Tarkwa and Damang communities since 2002.

This came to light during a ceremony organised by the Foundation to award scholarships to 160 tertiary students from the operational areas of Gold Fields Ghana Limited in Tarkwa and Damang.

The beneficiaries were mainly brilliant but financially disadvantaged students.

In an address read on his behalf, the minister noted that the scholarship awards have opened opportunities for the recipients to pursue knowledge, develop relevant skills and carve a career path for their future.

He mentioned that private sector investment in various educational resources, services and infrastructure helps to improve quality of education and development of human capital.

The minister said government continues to introduce funding models that will enhance access to quality education.

“It is in this light that government has launched the ‘No Fees Stress’ policy through which level 100 students at tertiary institutions are exempted from paying admission fees,” he added.

He said, “As at the close of day on June 17 this year, a total of 129,053 students had accessed the ‘No-Fees-Stress Application portal with 107,429 completing their applications.”

Regional Manager, Sustainable Development and Community Relations of Gold Fields, Robert Siaw disclosed that 52 per cent of the beneficiaries were females and 48 per cent males.

“Our expectations are high and we will monitor the progress and well-being of the beneficiaries even after they graduate,” he stressed.

Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, Abdel Razak Yakubu, said the Foundation has increased the annual scholarship package from GH¢8,000 to GH¢9,000 per academic year.

“We have also added a stipend of GH¢1,000 to better meet the needs of the students,” he added.

He urged the beneficiaries to stay off other funding schemes so more needy students can benefit.

Picketing teachers to spend night at GES headquarters

0

Aggrieved teachers from the 2022 batch of Colleges of Education-trained graduates picketing at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra have resolved to spend the night at the premises over months of unpaid salaries and delayed staff identification numbers.

The teachers, who massed up at the premises on Monday, June 23, said they had waited for more than two hours without any official engagement—despite submitting a formal letter outlining their grievances.

Tensions escalated when police officers arrived to disperse the group, issuing a three-minute ultimatum. The protesters resisted, prompting officers to forcibly remove them from the premises.

Still undeterred, the teachers say they will continue their action by presenting a petition to the Ministry of Finance and later marching to Parliament to draw national attention to their plight.

“When the MPs are going inside, we will draw their attention to what the government is putting us through. They should give us our staff IDs and the monies owed to us,” one leader said.

“The decision we’ve taken is to stay here so that tomorrow morning, we can go to the Finance Ministry to present the petition, and then proceed to Parliament,” he added.

Ghana now hosts over 100 Chinese-owned manufacturing firms – Julius Debrah

Julius Debrah is Ghana's Chief of Staff Julius Debrah is Ghana’s Chief of Staff

Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has revealed that Ghana is now home to more than 100 manufacturing entities owned by either the Chinese government or private Chinese investors.

Speaking at the Ghana-China Business Summit 2025 on Monday, June 23, 2025, Debrah emphasised that this level of investment reflects strong confidence in Ghana’s business environment.

“As we speak, we can boast of over 100 manufacturing entities owned either by the Chinese state or private Chinese investors. What that tells us is that Ghana is not a bad place to do business. A $100 billion investment wouldn’t happen here if that weren’t the case,” he stated.

He noted that President Mahama’s administration is committed to deepening Ghana-China relations by encouraging even more Chinese companies to establish assembly plants or launch new operations in Ghana.

“Looking at the 2023 records, Chinese exports to Ghana totaled over $3.7 billion, while Ghanaian exports stood at only $1.8 billion. What this suggests is that we need to find a way to bridge the trade gap. And there is a way to do so,” he said.

He added, “The President believes that when we talk about the Ghanaian market, it’s not just about Ghana as a country. When you invest in Ghana, you gain access to export to other West African countries, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Guinea. It’s much easier if you use Ghana as your base because we’re very close to Europe, and nearly all major airlines fly to Ghana.”

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has embarked a GH¢2.76 million project to construct a new 11kV distribution line from Afari Primary Substation to Nkawie, enhancing power reliability for surrounding communities.

In a report by citinewsroom.com, Ing George Amoah, ECG’s Ashanti West Regional General Manager, said the project is part of ECG’s efforts to improve power distribution infrastructure across Greater Kumasi and beyond.

This upgrade aims to reduce the load on the overloaded Agogo Primary Substation feeder, ensuring a more stable electricity supply for residents in Nkawie, Toase, Mpasatia, and other areas.

According to him, the new line features an extensive infrastructure upgrade, including 92 eleven-meter poles and three twelve-meter poles strategically installed to support the transmission system.

He stated that the older line’s longer distance resulted in low voltage problems, especially during peak demand times.

“The long distance of the older line contributed to low voltage issues, particularly during peak demand periods,” he said.

To Amoah, these enhancements will yield several key benefits, including a more stable voltage profile, reduced system losses, and increased operational efficiency.

Ultimately, this project aims to provide residents and businesses in the area with a more reliable and consistent power supply.

Hearts of Oak midfielder Mohammed Hussein given hero’s welcome in hometown

Mohammed Hussein was hoisted by people from his hometown Mohammed Hussein was hoisted by people from his hometown

It was pure joy and emotional scenes in Techiman on Sunday as Hearts of Oak’s midfield engine, Mohammed Hussein, popularly known as “Alonso,” returned home following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

The 21-year-old, who played a crucial role for the Phobians this season, was welcomed with cheers, chants, and the unmistakable pride of a town celebrating one of its own.

Local children, who idolise the player, gathered in numbers during a friendly community game, chanting his name as they hoisted him up in triumph and admiration.

It was a moment that captured the heartfelt connection between a rising football star and the community that shaped him.

Hussein had paid a surprise visit to the kids during their usual weekend football game, and the excitement that followed was electric.

Many were overwhelmed just to see him up close, with some visibly emotional.

The visit comes shortly after a strong campaign with Hearts of Oak, where Hussein featured in 30 league matches, scored one goal, and played a significant role in helping the club secure a top four finish.

One of his standout moments came in October 2024, when he earned the Man of the Match award in a gritty Week 5 encounter against Aduana Stars at the Legon Sports Stadium.

His commanding midfield display helped the Phobians earn a crucial point, and the club proudly celebrated the accolade on social media.

Tragedy mars title celebration as stadium collapse kills three in Algeria

A joyous football celebration in Algeria took a devastating turn over the weekend when three fans died and dozens were injured following a stadium collapse moments after MC Alger secured the national league title.

The incident occurred at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers, where the upper-tier security barrier gave way shortly after the final whistle, sending fans tumbling onto the lower stands.

According to the Algerian health ministry, more than 70 individuals were injured in the chaos and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Most have since been discharged.

Local media reported that the collapse followed a massive surge by fans eager to celebrate MC Alger’s title-winning draw against NC Magra. What began as a festive atmosphere, with green smoke from flares blanketing the packed stadium, quickly descended into tragedy.

In a statement, the health ministry confirmed: “Three people have died after falling from the upper stand of the stadium,” adding that emergency services responded swiftly to treat and transport the injured.

As news of the deaths spread, the league trophy presentation was abruptly cancelled out of respect for the victims. Players and club staff from MC Alger visited hospitals to donate blood for those injured, Reuters reported.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune issued a message of condolence to the bereaved families and extended wishes for a speedy recovery to those hurt in the accident, according to a BBC report.

MC Alger, one of the country’s most storied football clubs, clinched the title for the second consecutive year with the 0-0 result. But celebrations have now been overshadowed by grief and calls for increased stadium safety.

The tragedy has sparked national mourning and renewed scrutiny on crowd management and infrastructure at sports venues across Algeria.

OSP must learn to take criticism in good faith – Wonder Madilo

0

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Wonder Madilo, has advised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to handle public criticism with maturity and tolerance, warning that internal feuds among government officials could undermine public trust in governance.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 23, Madilo stressed that the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, must adopt a more accommodating posture in the face of scrutiny, especially as a public officer leading a sensitive anti-corruption mandate.

“Kissi Agyebeng must also be very accommodating with criticisms. We know that his investigation is doing very well and all that, but he also must learn how to take criticisms in good faith or let them be, just let them be what they are,” he said.

Madilo expressed surprise over the OSP’s sharp reaction to recent remarks by Professor Ransford Gyampo, describing it as unnecessary, especially considering the volume of public critique the office has received since its inception.

“He has received more criticisms than this, so I do not know why this has escalated. People have written things and held conferences against him. Even the family of Ken Ofori-Atta has done the same, so I do not know why this has gotten out of hand,” Madilo stated.

He warned that continued public spats between high-ranking government officials risk damaging the image of the state and feeding political opponents with ammunition.

“I just pray that cool heads will prevail, and some high-ranking official will call them to order, and then we can have some sanity. It is very dangerous for government officials to be fighting among themselves. What you are doing is giving them ammunition,” he cautioned.

Madilo’s comments follow a growing public disagreement between the Office of the Special Prosecutor and Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority. The OSP issued a public statement on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in response to Gyampo’s remarks during a June 21 interview on TV3.

In the interview, Prof. Gyampo questioned the motive behind the OSP’s investigation into former Finance Minister Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, saying, “I hope the OSP is not motivated by vendetta but out of patriotism.”

The OSP rejected the comment as “unfounded” and warned that such statements could damage the credibility of Ghana’s anti-corruption fight. The office also revealed that Prof. Gyampo had contacted them during a legal search of Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML), supported by National Security operatives.

Asantehene Commissions Kumasi Airport City Project

Otumfuo’s Hiahene, Nana Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene, cutting sod to begin the project

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially commissioned the state-of-the-art Kumasi Airport City Project.

Speaking on behalf of the Asantehene at a ceremony, Otumfuo’s Hiahene, Nana Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II, described the initiative as “the most ambitious private-sector-led development in the history of our city.”

He expressed immense pride in what he called “a life-changing initiative that signals a bold new future for Kumasi and for Ghana.”

Located on a sprawling 50-acre site at the foot of the Prempeh I International Airport, the Kumasi Airport City Project is poised to redefine luxury urban living in the Ashanti Region while serving as a catalyst for urban renewal, job creation, and digital innovation.

The project is expected to be completed within two and a half years and is set to boost the city’s economy.

“This is more than a real estate project,” Otumfuo emphasized. “It is a declaration of intent — a vision to build a modern city of excellence rooted in the history and pride of Asanteman, but boldly reaching out to the future.”

The Asantehene commended the lead developer, Stephen Owusu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HDG Inc., describing him as “a proud son of the Golden Stool” and “a shining example of the entrepreneurial potential of the Ghanaian diaspora.”

“Stephen has shown what is possible when vision is backed by commitment and courage. After many years in the diaspora, where he rose to senior positions in one of the world’s largest retail chains, he decided to bring his knowledge, experience, and resources back home. Today, the result is before us — the Kumasi Airport City Project,” he remarked.

“We must begin a national conversation about self-belief,” he urged. “We must encourage our people to put their money where their mouth is — to invest in the future of Ghana. For that to happen, we need policies that support enterprise, reward hard work, and reduce the risks faced by private investors.”

He acknowledged the government’s efforts in stabilizing the economy and fostering a business-friendly environment and called for continued support for entrepreneurs who are ready to take bold steps in building the nation.

Otumfuo further proposed a strategic partnership between Kumasi Airport City and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to establish a cutting-edge technology hub. This, he noted, would drive Ghana’s digital transformation and empower the country’s youth.

HDG founder, Stephen Owusu, outlined the vision for the city saying, “We are creating an urban space where pedestrians can walk safely on paved walkways without sharing the road with vehicles. All drains will be built underground, roads will include dedicated bike lanes, and the entire environment will be enhanced with abundant greenery.”

President of Miller Holding, Mert Mildon, pledged his company’s unwavering support for the Asantehene’s vision of transforming Kumasi into a modern and vibrant economic hub while preserving its rich cultural heritage.

“We are happy to contribute to the Asantehene’s vision for Kumasi — one that aims to transform the city into a vibrant hub while preserving its cultural heritage,” he stated.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, stated that Ghana has a housing deficit of 1.8 million units. In the Ashanti Region alone, the deficit accounts for approximately 5.4% of the national figure. Many people lack access to decent and suitable housing, which affects various aspects of society, including urban and rural beautification, sanitation, and overall quality of life.

He emphasized that housing and its related infrastructure — especially in the context of regional and city planning — is something the government takes very seriously.

Manasseh Azure declares support for Dr Bawumia in NPP flagbearer race

0

Journalist Manasseh Azure has publicly declared his support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party’s upcoming presidential primaries, citing the Vice President’s leadership potential and comparative strengths over other contenders.

In a personal commentary, the journalist said he has never claimed political neutrality and has previously stated his interest in who governs Ghana.

“I’m a citizen of Ghana before being a journalist. I vote. And I care who becomes president,” he wrote.

He revealed that he voted for the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 after supporting John Mahama in 2012, but explained that Mahama had not earned his vote for a second term.

Although he abstained from voting in the 2024 elections, the journalist said Ghana’s democracy requires strong opposition leadership and credible alternatives heading into 2028.

He expressed concern that an NPP victory in 2024 would have signaled a tolerance for impunity, but noted that many Ghanaians shared his view and acted to hold the party accountable.

With the NPP now set to elect a new leader, he stated that Dr. Bawumia stands out “by miles” among the current contenders.

“Even if I end up not voting for Bawumia, it is in the interest of our democracy that the opposition elects a strong, level-headed candidate,” he noted.

He acknowledged Bawumia’s role in the current administration but argued that this should not disqualify him outright, especially considering the weaknesses of his internal opponents.

The journalist also ranked former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, as his second preference, adding that his first choice would have been Dr. Yaw Adutwum, had he not been a minister.

He concluded that Bawumia represents the NPP’s best hope of fielding a unifying and formidable candidate ahead of the 2028 general election.

Bright Simons alleges rot at Development Bank Ghana

0

The Development Bank Ghana (DBG), established with ambitious goals to bolster the private sector, is engulfed in a severe governance and management crisis, according to a scathing exposé by the Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons.

Revelations by the whistleblower, based on a confidential Deloitte “progress report”, point to alleged financial mismanagement and deep-seated internal wrangling within the institution, forcing the government to involve state security agencies.

In a post, Mr Simons said the controversy surfaced in November 2024, when IMANI Africa reportedly “got wind of a civil war inside DBG”, pitting internal compliance, risk, and audit functions against the dominant factions of the Board and management.

This internal strife escalated to the point where two directors resigned in protest over serious governance failings.

Mr Simons did not mince words, characterising the situation as one where “money was being spent as if it grew on trees”.

This accusation is particularly shocking given the DBG’s pedigree and the sophistication of its founding financial partners.

READ ALSO: OSP vs Ofori-Atta: Former Kufuor advisor shoots down political colourisation debate

The bank, launched in 2021 with an initial capitalisation of GH₵ 1.135 billion (approximately $200 million at the time), draws significant funding from highly reputable Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) such as the World Bank ($250 million), the European Investment Bank ($170 million), the German KfW ($46.5 million), and the African Development Bank ($40 million). These institutions typically impose stringent fiduciary and governance standards on their beneficiaries.

Rather than addressing the internal dissent and external concerns raised by activists, the DBG’s Board and management initially opted for a strategy of “gaslighting”, according to Mr Simons, attempting to deflect and discredit the allegations.

This resistance ultimately prompted the Board to commission an independent investigation by Deloitte in January 2025.

However, the path to a transparent report was reportedly fraught with obstacles.

Mr Simons claims that “initial Deloitte drafts caused pandemonium, forcing multiple revisions & rewrites.”

A final version, presented as a “progress report” dated May 21, 2025, was eventually shared with the new government and the DFIs, who had been exerting pressure for clarity.

Despite attempts by the report to “overcompensate for the seriously damning findings by including generous dollops of management rationalisations”, Mr Simons maintains that “facts are stubborn.”

The confidential nature of this progress report means the government may not release it immediately, especially as some of Deloitte’s submissions revealed limitations in its investigative capacity, signalling the need for more robust probes.

This has, according to Mr Simons, compelled the government to now “include the state security and investigative bodies”, indicating a potential shift towards criminal investigations into the alleged malpractices.

Bright Simons presented several damning extracts from the Deloitte report, highlighting critical areas of concern:

“You will see that board members who pushed for cost verification were overruled by the majority. Why would any serious fiduciary board do that?” Mr Simons questioned in his post, suggesting a systemic disregard for sound financial oversight.

“Consistent with the Board’s posture, DBG’s IT budget was set arbitrarily as a percentage of total assets, with no real connection to the needs of the Bank,” he added, raising red flags about prudent financial planning and resource allocation.

He pointed out that significant irregularities were found in the pricing of DBG’s Temenos core banking platform, a critical piece of banking infrastructure.

This led to “millions of $ in price variations”, which were not resolved by directly engaging the original suppliers.

Mr Simons noted a “biztech discrepancy alone amounted to $6m”, indicating substantial potential overpayments.

Additionally, he pointed out that “several contracts signed with vendors were not reviewed by legal counsel. When this was found out, attempts were then made to review contracts that had already been signed.”

This reveals a profound lapse in standard corporate governance procedures and exposes the bank to significant legal risks.

“There were wide-ranging gaps between status updates shared by AWC, another vendor, and the verified deliverables amounting potentially to millions of dollars.”

This points to a failure in contract management and vendor accountability, potentially leading to financial losses for the DBG.

NPP’s failure to utilise MMDCEs was a huge mistake – Former New Juabeng MCE

A former Municipal Chief Executive for New Juabeng South, Isaac Appau Gyasi A former Municipal Chief Executive for New Juabeng South, Isaac Appau Gyasi

The former Municipal Chief Executive for New Juabeng South, Isaac Appau Gyasi, has criticised the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over claims that the party failed to effectively utilise its local government officers during the 2024 general elections.

According to him, some of the Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) had strong grassroots support and could have been of immense help to the party in canvassing votes had they been given the opportunity.

He accused the leadership of sidelining them, which, to him, “was a huge mistake”.

“For the first time, I think that the party underutilised the strength of its MMDCEs. The kind of support and also the leadership some of us exhibited in our various municipalities, I don’t think the party utilised that.

“In an election, if you are not given any specific role to perform, it’s politics, my brother. Empower somebody who represented the president on the ground,” he said on June 23, 2025, during Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s meeting with former MMDCEs at the Alisa Hotel.

He added, “It was a huge mistake and I’ll even say it here if I’m given opportunity. How can you relegate somebody who has supervised the entire municipality or district for almost eight years and when it came to the crunch you say ‘you know what you be at number ten position’?”

Appau Gyasi cautioned the party to desist from such actions if it hopes to increase its electoral fortunes.

“Party chairmen come to the municipal chief executive or the district chief executive to get things done on the ground. What are we talking about here? It was a huge mistake. It was the biggest mistake. You have given the person the mandate to look over the entire municipality and when it mattered most that he should take advantage and let him be part of (sic)…” he indicated.

‘Ghana’s security system is flawed, stop making noise’ – Prophet Kofi Oduro

General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro

The General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has criticised Ghana’s security agencies amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the FBI’s arrest of several Ghanaian citizens.

In a video shared on X on June 23, 2025, Prophet Kofi Oduro, while preaching to his congregation, labelled them as incompetent.

He questioned how security personnel stationed in Ghana could remain unaware of large-scale fraudulent activities occurring under their watch.

“You’re in Ghana, yet your system is so flawed that another country can send officials, like the FBI, to come here and arrest criminals, while your own system can’t do that. And yet, you stand there and make noise,” he said.

Prophet Oduro also cited the case of Ghanaian-born U.S. Army Major Kojo Dartey, who was sentenced to 70 months in prison for smuggling firearms into Ghana, as further proof of what he described as a failed security system.

“There’s a Ghanaian who rose to the rank of Major in the U.S. Army and used his position to illegally import firearms into this country for four years—and no one in Ghana caught him. It was the American authorities who arrested him. Ghanaian security officials saw the illegal activities but turned a blind eye,” he added.

Prophet Oduro’s comments come in the wake of the FBI arresting several Ghanaian businessmen, Kofi Boateng (popularly known as Kofi Boat), Joseph Boateng (Dada Joe Remix), Inusah Ahmed (aka Agony), and others, for their alleged involvement in a $100 million fraud scheme.

Cosmetic interventions for student safety in Bawku unacceptable – Presby Moderator

0

Reverend Dr Abraham Nana Opare is the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Reverend Dr Abraham Nana Opare is the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana

Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Reverend Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called on security agencies, traditional authorities, and other key stakeholders to work together to restore lasting peace in Bawku, stressing the need to go beyond what he described as “cosmetic interventions.”

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Monday, June 23, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb, Reverend Opare Kwakye expressed deep concern about the safety of residents, particularly students, in the conflict-prone area.

“We need to nip the problem in the bud. We need to deal with it at its roots. If we’re able to deal with it at its roots, then we’ll stop these cosmetic ideas of children going to school, only for them to be sent back a few weeks later,” he remarked.

He recounted a recent incident in which gunshots were fired at a bus conveying students of the Presbyterian Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Bawku.

“If you’ll remember, the students were on their way to school when gunshots were fired into the bus. Now, how do I ask children and young people to go back to that same school? It’s my school. I cannot assure them of their security. Regarding my own security, I can’t even be sure. So, it’s a problem,” he lamented.

He disclosed that the Presbyterian Church has held multiple meetings with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and other relevant authorities, but the assurances received have yet to produce any meaningful change on the ground.

“We have had several meetings with REGSEC and some very significant people. We have been given some assurances, but this is not the first time.

“Just recently, the President had to order military escorts for travellers on the Bawku road, that alone tells you the problem is far from over,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Reverend Opare Kwakye was hopeful that a collective national effort involving political leadership, security forces, and traditional rulers—particularly belonging to the two ethnic groups involved could pave the way for a lasting peace.

“I am confident that if our national leaders, the police, the army, and even the traditional leaders sit down and work together, there will be peace,” he added.

The protracted conflict in Bawku, which has spanned several decades, has claimed multiple lives and disrupted the socio-economic fabric of communities across the Upper East Region.

Recent mediation efforts led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, have brought a period of relative calm to the area.

The Asantehene engaged representatives of the feuding Kusasi and Mamprusi factions between April 28 and April 30, 2025, before peace talks were temporarily suspended.

Mybitstore’s Benjamin Anderson represents Ghana at AU Crypto Summit

0

Anderson's presence at the summit signaled the growing influence of private sector players Anderson’s presence at the summit signaled the growing influence of private sector players

Ghanaian fintech entrepreneur and CEO of Mybitstore, Benjamin Anderson, has represented the country at a historic African Union (AU) summit in Lusaka, Zambia, where African leaders and experts adopted a new Strategy on Digital Assets and Cryptocurrency Governance.

The three-day summit, held from June 18–20, 2025, marks the AU’s most significant step yet toward shaping a continental approach to cryptocurrency regulation and digital finance.

The newly adopted strategy aims to guide African governments in managing digital assets safely and responsibly, while supporting innovation and inclusion in the growing crypto space.

Participants at the summit included AU officials, national government representatives, academics, and blockchain industry leaders. Egypt’s Associate Minister of Finance for Policies and Economic Affairs Finance Minister, Dr, Mohammed Ibrahim Abdu, led his country’s delegation, with Zambia’s presidential office also playing a key hosting role.

Also present were leading experts such as Professor Jonathan Aremu of the ECOWAS Common Investment Market and Ms. Ron Osman, Mr. Islam Swaleh, Professor Charles Linjap, Dr. Kopulande Sebastian, Professor Khaled Dabees, Milcah Municak Munoko, and Professor Timamy, who delivered technical modules on regulation, digital infrastructure, and risk mitigation.

The discussions covered a range of pressing issues: from cryptocurrency’s role in payments and investment, to creating policies that align with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and exploring how digital assets could help deliver social services through tools like Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

According to Benjamin Anderson, “In Africa, because we see innovation as risk, we end up frustrating innovative projects,”.

“The AU must create more opportunities for dialogue and experimentation in the crypto space.” he added.

The summit also examined proposals to establish an African Cryptocurrency Reserve, which could support local currencies and promote regional stability.

With the AU’s endorsement of the new digital assets strategy, attention now turns to individual countries, including Ghana, to adopt and tailor the framework to suit their local realities.

This could mean new opportunities for fintech companies, startups, and young entrepreneurs across the continent.

As one of the rising voices in Ghana’s crypto scene, Anderson’s presence at the summit not only raised the country’s profile but also signaled the growing influence of private sector players in shaping Africa’s digital financial future.

‘Adom Kyei-Duah gifted me GH¢50,000’

Ghanaian boxer, Joseph Sackey, has stated that founder and General Overseer of Believers Worship Centre, Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, gifted him GH¢50,000 after learning that he wore his sticker on his shorts during a match at the “Battle of the Beasts” boxing event.

Despite losing the bout, Sackey’s gesture caught the pastor’s attention, leading to the generous reward.

Adom Kyei-Duah invited Sackey to his church, welcomed him warmly, and referred to him as “Adom Ba”.

The pastor’s gesture has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising his kindness while others questioned his motives.

The boxer confirmed that the prophet gave him GH¢50,000 after he honoured an invitation to attend his Sunday church service on June 22, 2025.

In an emotional interview that went viral on X on June 22, 2025, shortly after the service, an elated Joseph Sackey expressed his joy after meeting the pastor.

“I’m incredibly happy. Everyone is now calling me Adom Ba,” he said with enthusiasm.

Sackey, who has aspirations of becoming a champion, added, “I’m ready to defeat any boxer who comes my way. I couldn’t believe it when Papa called me on stage. When I get home today, I will sleep peacefully; he calls me a champion, so I will become like him. Nobody can defeat me now.”

According to YEN.com.gh on June 22, 2025, Bernard Okyere, a member of the church, expressed his gratitude to their leader for the kind gesture.

“Due to work and schooling, I don’t get time to go to church as often as I want but I was happy when I heard the news. Papa is a good man and we thank God for using him to win souls and help the youth,” he said.

Sackey further noted that he had prepared spiritually for the match by utilising Prophet Kyei-Duah’s Grace Miracle Water, Miracle Oil, and Sobolo (a traditional Ghanaian beverage).

He felt confident and ready to win but the referee’s alleged actions derailed his chances.

Following the match, Joseph Sackey firmly defended his performance, insisting that the defeat was unjust.

He expressed frustration towards the referee, claiming that the official had tripped him during the bout, contributing to his loss.

Although he acknowledged feeling dazed from Khan’s punches, he argued that he could have continued fighting if not for the referee’s interference, which ultimately led to the fight being stopped prematurely.

Mob violence claims lives in central Nigeria as police arrest 22 suspects

The brutal incident reportedly occurred late Friday night, The brutal incident reportedly occurred late Friday night,

A wedding journey ended in bloodshed after a violent mob descended on a passenger bus in Nigeria’s Plateau State, killing at least a dozen people and injuring others.

The brutal incident reportedly occurred late Friday night, and authorities have since arrested 22 individuals in connection with the attack.

The group had departed from Zaria in Kaduna State, roughly 400 kilometers away, and lost their way en route to a wedding, eventually finding themselves in the volatile Mangu area. According to a statement released by Plateau police on Saturday, the passengers were ambushed and mobbed by locals.

While the police confirmed that 21 victims were rescued from what they described as an “angry mob,” they did not specify how many were killed. Nigerian police often report lower casualty figures than local authorities or eyewitnesses.

Human rights organization Amnesty International provided a grim update, saying “12 people were instantly killed and 11 others injured in the attack.”

“Authorities must ensure that the actual persons behind the horrific attack are brought to justice,” Amnesty said in a statement issued Saturday.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the violence and urged law enforcement to pursue justice swiftly, emphasizing the need for stronger preventive measures. “Law enforcement should ensure justice is served and implement measures to prevent any recurrence,” he stated.

The massacre adds to a growing list of tragedies in Nigeria’s north-central region, which has seen a surge in communal conflicts and attacks by armed groups. Just two weeks earlier, at least 100 people were killed in a deadly assault on a village in neighboring Benue State.

Tyler Perry didn’t wake up to that level of support; he built it by serving his audience – Leila Djansi

0

Ghanaian-American filmmaker Leila Djansi has joined the ongoing conversation about support for Ghanaian films, urging her peers to reflect on community engagement, humility, and the power of storytelling that truly serves its audience.

The debate was reignited after film producer and director Shirley Frimpong-Manso expressed disappointment in an interview with Doreen Avio on Hitz FM, stating that Ghanaians appeared more excited about Tyler Perry’s new film than her own project, . Shirley suggested that Ghanaians have failed to support their own filmmakers.

While some sided with her, many others argued that the comparison was unfair and failed to take into account the level of investment Perry puts into his productions and promotion.

Leila Djansi took to Facebook to share her perspective, highlighting how Tyler Perry earned his support over time through authenticity, service, and commitment to his community.

“Let’s get one thing straight. Tyler Perry did not wake up one morning to that level of support. I used to attend his plays in Georgia. That man built his audience from the ground up. He carried his entire community with him… He never served Hollywood. He served his audience,” she wrote.

Leila, known for films such as , , and , further bemoaned what she described as clique behaviour, envy, and a lack of community spirit among Ghanaian creatives.

“In Ghana, too many people operate in cliques. Gossip cliques. You only reward people in your circle… And when Ghanaians, ordinary people, buy your movies, you reward them by posting pictures of your Gucci purse,” she added.

The filmmaker also suggested that unlike other audiences who focus primarily on the value of the work itself, Black communities often tie support to personal perception and emotional investment in the artist.

“There’s this thing I learned about us Black people. We use support as reward. We reward you with our support if we are happy with you,” she wrote.

Leila went on to share personal experiences where her efforts to support Ghanaian filmmakers were met with resentment or sabotage, leading her to withdraw from such efforts altogether.

She concluded her post with a critique of what she views as the toxic culture among some industry players and called for a shift in mindset, reminding creatives that storytelling is ultimately about service, not self-promotion.

“Being a storyteller is about service. Not fame. That gift is God’s gift. Use it to serve his earth. It’s not about you!” she noted.

Leila Djansi is a Ghanaian-American filmmaker known for tackling social issues through her works. She studied film in the United States and has earned awards and recognition for her strong female-led narratives and commitment to both African and diasporan storytelling. She has often spoken out about challenges in the Ghanaian film industry, particularly around professionalism, support systems, and creative integrity.

Leading NPP member proposes revision of requirements for higher party roles

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, is proposing a revision of internal qualification requirements for higher party positions.

He suggests that persons who are passed for executive positions at the regional and national levels should have previously held portfolios at the polling station or constituency levels.

The former Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirant believes that, aside from the ability to serve effectively, such persons have strong ties with the grassroots, which is key for party development.

He was speaking at the NPP Chairmen Caucus of Ghana Conference in Kumasi on the theme: “Building Momentum: The Role of NPP Constituency Chairmen in Uplifting the Party Towards 2028 and Beyond.”

The conference brought together constituency chairmen from across the country to discuss strategies, internal cohesion, and preparations for the 2028 general elections.

The speech of Odeneho Kwaku Appiah highlighted the need for unity, discipline, and renewed energy in the struggle to return to power.

He further made a call for action that resonated deeply with party members grappling with internal challenges and public perception issues following the 2024 elections, emphasising the dangers of internal division.

“Let us set aside religious, tribal, and economic differences in favour of collective strength,” he added.

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity,” he quoted Psalm 133:1 to remind the audience that the path to victory in 2028 requires forgiveness, teamwork, and a strategic commitment to ethical governance.

Throughout the address, the former Constituency Chairman invoked powerful references from Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and African proverbs to emphasise unity, collaboration, and responsibility.

He also urged party executives to actively participate in decision-making, foster transparency, and embrace dissenting views within the boundaries of respectful democratic discourse.

Ken Agyapong ‘barred’ from campaigning at Zongos over Nyiaeso MP’s religious comments

Dr Stephen Amoah is the Member of Parliament for Nyiaeso Dr Stephen Amoah is the Member of Parliament for Nyiaeso

The Zongo Youth Movement has warned New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, to keep his campaign away from Zongo communities, following religious comments allegedly made by Member of Parliament for Nyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah.

Dr Amoah, who openly declared his support for Kennedy Agyapong during an engagement with TESCON-SDDU, on June 21, 2025, attributed the NPP’s 2024 election defeat to the then-presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, being of Islamic faith.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com on June 23, 2025, the group is demanding a formal apology from both Dr Stephen Amoah, also known as “Sticka,” and Kennedy Agyapong, describing the remarks as divisive and dangerous to Ghana’s religious harmony.

The Public Relations Officer of the Zongo Youth Movement, Abdullai Ali, speaking to Citi News, condemned the statement attributed to Dr Amoah and questioned why no member of Agyapong’s team has publicly disowned or distanced themselves from it.

“It is not unfair to associate these remarks with Kennedy Agyapong’s camp. After the comments were made, no one from his team came forward to disown or condemn it. In fact, some members defended the claim on TV and radio using misleading data,” he said.

He added that the group’s concern stems not only from the initial remarks but also from the silence that followed, which he says signals tacit approval.

“If Kennedy Agyapong had issued a statement distancing himself from the remarks, we would have focused only on Dr Amoah but the silence from his camp speaks volumes,” he stated.

The group is urging all political actors to uphold national unity and avoid comments that risk stoking religious tension.

FBI arrests will hurt Ghana’s entertainment industry

MC Portfolio has established that recent FBI arrests could threaten Ghana's creative industry play videoMC Portfolio has established that recent FBI arrests could threaten Ghana’s creative industry

Ghanaian media personality MC Portfolio has stated that the recent FBI arrests of some Ghanaian businessmen could land a major blow to the country’s entertainment industry.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently arrested a number of Ghanaian individuals reportedly linked to internet fraud schemes.

While the case has sparked widespread discussions online and offline, MC Portfolio has taken a different angle.

He has emphasised on how these alleged fraudsters have, in his view, been playing a key role in sustaining the Ghanaian creative industry.

Speaking in a discussion on Fakye TV, he pointed out that the Ghanaian entertainment industry has long struggled with a lack of investment.

According to him, the individuals now facing legal trouble were among the few who had shown interest in the sector and were funding it.

MC Portfolio argued that these men were helping keep the arts alive by providing platforms, resources, and financial support to musicians and other creatives.

“It’s pathetic that these people are on the FBI list, unfortunately, there’s an unspoken truth, but I have to say it. There is something called investment drought where, the movie industry, music industry and the entertainment industry are calling for investors to invest in their sector, unfortunately these are the people who have shown interest in our industry (entertainment industry).

“They are investing in our industry, there are giving the artistes the right value for money, they are the ones building the facilities needed to enhance the creative activities, they are keeping the culture alive, so now what do we do?” MC Portfolio stated.

He further raised concerns about why such individuals choose to engage with the entertainment space only when trying to launder money, noting that many of them own some of the biggest nightclubs.

These establishments, he said, often serve as venues where Ghanaian artistes get the opportunity to perform and earn decent pay.

“Why do they find it comfortable to enter our space only when they want to wash their money, they own some of the biggest clubs in the country, which is why someone can spend one billion a night there.

“They have created the facilities to organise shows for our artistes so that they get the chance to perform, and they pay our artistes the right cheque,” he said.

MC Portfolio concluded by labelling the situation a wake-up call. He urged stakeholders in the creative space to rethink how the industry is positioned and marketed, particularly in terms of attracting legitimate investors.

“It is our industry (entertainment industry) that they use for their money laundering, so now it’s a wake-up call for us on how we market our industry for legit business owners,” he stated.

Old video of Kalsoume Sinare resurfaces amid appointment as Ambassador to Spain

Veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare Veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare

An old video of veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare has resurfaced online, sparking debate on social media shortly after her appointment as Ghana’s ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain.

In a letter dated June 10, 2025, and signed by Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Office of the President confirmed that Sinare’s appointment followed consultations with the Council of State.

However, following the announcement, a previously recorded video of the actress expressing her preference for her children to marry within the Muslim faith began circulating online, drawing mixed reactions.

In the video, Kalsoume said she prays her children marry Muslim partners to preserve their faith and family traditions.

“I have two grown boys, 26 and 23… They are Muslims and they pray. I have always prayed to God that they bring Muslim girls for me to accept. Even though it’s one God, if it’s a Christian girl, I still pray the girl becomes a Muslim.

“I wouldn’t like to be gone and not have my grandchildren pray for me. In Islam, what the dead benefit from is prayers. So, I pray that if I’m not alive, my children will maintain what I left behind,” she said.

While some viewed the comment as a personal expression of faith, others criticised it as religiously biased, especially in light of her ambassadorial appointment.

One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote: “But a Christian, John Dramani Mahama, appointed you as ambassador to Spain. Why didn’t you reject it? Smh. I don’t blame you.”

Another, identified as Kwaku Ananse, commented: “She accepted an ambassadorial position in a Christian country, yet promotes religious division. People like her shouldn’t be appointed to represent a diverse nation. She should have been sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Such hypocrisy.”

On the other hand, some netizens defended the actress, insisting that her comments were a reflection of her faith and not a call for division.

“It is haram for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man. Her statement is in line with Islamic teachings. Let’s not be hypocrites. She has the right to express her beliefs,” another X user argued.

Fitch warns cedi could be at risk if gold prices fall

0

File photo of gold bars and cedi notes File photo of gold bars and cedi notes

Fitch Solutions has cautioned that a sharp decline in global gold prices could significantly erode Ghana’s international reserves and destabilise the cedi.

The UK-based research firm noted that such a scenario could be triggered by a return to more conventional trade policies in the United States or the resolution of major global geopolitical tensions.

According to Fitch, if gold prices were to fall sharply, the Bank of Ghana would struggle to maintain the cedi’s current stability, potentially leading to a renewed sell-off of the local currency.

“This would keep inflation elevated, lead to a weakening in consumer and investor sentiment, and prompt the central bank to keep interest rates higher for longer,” Fitch Solutions stated.

This development forms part of the firm’s downside risk outlook for Ghana in its recent report.

On the other hand, Fitch noted an upside scenario where a further appreciation of the cedi would help bring inflation down more quickly than currently projected.

The firm explained that this would boost private consumption and create room for the Bank of Ghana to ease its tight monetary policy stance, potentially stimulating credit uptake and supporting broader economic growth.

Fitch also projected that government consumption will contract in 2025, as the administration prioritises fiscal consolidation measures in line with Ghana’s International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.

This anticipated pullback in public spending could temper overall economic activity.

Despite the expected fiscal tightening, Fitch said private consumption is likely to strengthen, supported by a stable cedi and sustained high gold prices.

The firm concluded that a stronger exchange rate would ease inflationary pressures, improve household purchasing power, and support consumer spending in the near term.

GAFOSC, Telecel shine in UG Corporate League Week 17 GAFOSC, Telecel shine in UG Corporate League Week 17

Week 17 games of the University of Ghana Corporate Football League played on Friday June 20, 2025, delivered the most intense round of Group A matches as teams clashed fiercely at the UG Warm-Up Pitch in their pursuit of glory.

In the opening match, College of Humanities, UG outclassed the College of Health Sciences, securing an emphatic 4-1 victory.

The Humanities side showcased fluid teamwork and clinical finishing, leaving their opponents chasing shadows for most of the game.

The lone goal from Health Sciences provided little consolation in what was a dominant display from the Humanities squad.

Telecel Ghana followed up with another commanding performance, comfortably defeating the College of Education, UG with a 3-0 win.

Telecel’s tactical superiority and solid defense kept the Education side from gaining any foothold, sealing all three points with a clean sheet and securing their second win in style.

In the third clash, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) proved too strong for the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, UG, finishing with a confident 3-1 scoreline and securing their first win in the league.

The day wrapped up with the match between Union Ghana and the Ghana Armed Forces Officers Club (GAFOSC).

GAFOSC’s number 7, Seargeant Amoh Michael, opened the scoring less than eight minutes into the first half and added a second after the break.

Union Ghana showed resilience, but GAFOSC’s clinical finishing and strong defensive organization secured a well-earned 2–0 victory.

The Ghana Armed Forces Officers Club now sit on top of Group A with 22 points with Union Ghana second with 21points.

Both teams have qualified from Group A waiting to play winners of Group B in the semi-finals.

Join us again this Friday, June 27th 2025, at 5PM at the University of Ghana Stadium for final matches from Group B.

Don’t Come To Zongos – Group To Stephen Amoah

0

Stephen Amoah

A Zongo group has asked the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Stephen Amoah, not to campaign in any Zongo community.

The warning was contained in a release from the Zongo Youth Movement (ZYM) and signed by their Chairman, Alhaji Adams Peacemaker and Abdullahi Ali, PRO.

“We are shocked and disappointed by a recent comment made by Hon. Kennedy Agyapong’s team member Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, suggesting that Ghanaians voted against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections due to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Islamic faith, and that Ghanaians hardly vote for Muslims.

“We find this comment not only divisive but also unfortunate. We condemn this comment in its entirety and call on all party members, delegates and Ghanaians to reject such divisive rhetoric, as it does not represent the core values and ethics of the New Patriotic Party,” the release stated.

Historically, the NPP has presented presidential candidates to Ghanaians based on their proven track records of integrity, temperament, hard work, leadership skills, and unquestionable service to the nation, rather than their faith or religion, the ZYM stressed.

Continuing, the statement pointed that there is no basis to support Dr. Amoah’s negative comments, adding “in fact, during the Fourth Republic, the NPP has had a Muslim Vice President on two occasions when the party was in government, and Ghanaians voted massively for the party both times. This contradicts Dr. Amoah’s claim that Ghanaians are anti-Muslim.”

The group called on Dr. Amoah to refrain from making such negative comments about people’s religion, explaining that “Muslims and Christians have co-existed in love and harmony, and politics has never divided Ghanaians on religious lines. We call on all party supporters to focus on issue-based campaigning with civility, rather than resorting to comments that could undermine the core values and ethics we have built as a party over the years.

“We therefore warn Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and his team not to enter any Mosque, Muslim or Zongo Community with his campaign. He should stay away from all Muslim or Zongo activities and do his campaign elsewhere.

“We are by this release, calling on all Muslims and Zongo communities to refuse him entry into any Mosque, social gatherings or get anywhere closer to any forms of Muslim/Zongo activities with his campaign.”

To Kennedy Agyapong, they demanded an unreserved apology for what they described as an unsavory comment from his team member, and must well instruct Dr. Stephen Amoah to also unequivocally apologise without any strings attached.

Be measured in handling China on galamsey

0

Ibrahim Adjei, former Assistant Secretary at the Office of the former President Nana Akufo-Addo, has urged Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador to China, Kojo Bonsu, to adopt a diplomatic and measured approach in dealing with the Chinese government on matters related to illegal mining activities involving some of its nationals in Ghana.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 23, he stressed that while Ghana must hold China accountable where necessary, engagement must be handled with tact and strategic diplomacy.

“In terms of China and galamsey, what Kojo Bonsu should do is to work on strengthening the bridges that we have in China. But in strengthening those bridges, he has to recognise where there are excesses from Chinese nationals operating within Ghana and see the ways and means that he can create a strong narrative for China to take action where necessary in terms of galamsey,” he stated.

He highlighted that Ghana had a role to play in the situation, having initially allowed the influx of Chinese nationals into the mining sector. “We allowed the Chinese to come, so the ball is in our court,” Adjei noted.

Despite the challenges, Adjei underscored the importance of using diplomacy and constructive dialogue to resolve the matter. “But again, we have to be diplomatic, constructive, measured in how we deal with China,” he advised.

It’s only a joker who will say he doesn’t know the cause of NPP’s humiliating defeat—Franklin Cudjoe

0

President of Policy Think Tank, IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe thinks it is a joke for anyone in the New Patriotic Party to say he/she don’t know what caused their 2024 electoral defeat.

Kennedy Agyapong, while addressing the 2025 conference of chairmen of the New Patriotic Party, was emphatic that he is not aware of what caused the defeat of the political party in the 2024 elections.
