Rwanda bans use of foreign currency in local trade

Rwanda has announced strict new regulations banning the use of foreign currencies—including the US dollar—in local transactions, joining a growing number of African countries, including Tanzania, that are cracking down on the informal dollarization of their economies.

The National Bank of Rwanda (NBR) said it will impose hefty fines on businesses and individuals who quote prices, issue invoices, or conduct sales in foreign currencies without formal authorization.

The measures aim to reinforce the use of the Rwandan franc, improve monetary policy effectiveness, and curb economic distortions caused by the widespread use of foreign currencies in domestic markets.

“Quoting or transacting in foreign currency without prior approval undermines the national currency, weakens the central bank’s control over inflation, and distorts fair pricing,” the NBR said in a statement.

The ban covers all local transactions, including displaying prices in US dollars on websites, issuing invoices in foreign currencies to Rwandan customers, or referencing foreign currency values during domestic negotiations.

Violations will attract a fine of Rwf 5 million (approx. Tsh12.5 million) for the first offence and Rwf 10 million (approx. Tsh25 million) for repeat violations.

However, exceptions have been made for import and export-related transactions, and for certain sectors—such as hotels, duty-free shops, international schools, casinos, and tour agencies—when dealing with non-resident customers.

Rwanda’s currency law mirrors efforts taken by Tanzania in May 2025, when the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) reaffirmed the country’s ban on the use of foreign currencies in local transactions.

BoT reminded the public that all goods and services within Tanzania must be priced and paid for in Tanzanian shillings.

Like Rwanda, Tanzania made exceptions for international trade, tourism-related services dealing with non-residents, and approved foreign exchange bureaus.

The policy is part of a broader regional trend aimed at safeguarding currency sovereignty, enhancing monetary policy transmission, and building investor confidence in domestic currencies.

BoT warned that quoting prices in US dollars or other foreign currencies within Tanzania can lead to enforcement action, including fines and the revocation of business licenses.

The move by Rwanda and Tanzania reflects a wider continental shift. In Nigeria, the Senate introduced a bill last year seeking to ban the use of foreign currencies in domestic transactions. The legislation, still under consideration, aims to promote the naira and eliminate discriminatory practices where foreign currency is preferred over the local currency.

Analysts say these moves are especially critical for countries positioning themselves as regional financial and trade hubs. By curbing informal dollarization, central banks can more effectively stabilize inflation, manage interest rates, and ensure fair competition across sectors.

Alabaster Box Serves Medikal Through Social Media

Alabaster Box

The Accra High Court has allowed gospel group Alabaster Box to serve rapper Medikal through social media and other non-traditional methods after failing to reach him in person.

The group is suing Medikal, whose real name is Samuel Adu Frimpong, for allegedly copying parts of their hit song Akwaaba in his track ‘Welcome to Africa’.

They say the first 10 seconds of his song sound too similar to theirs and claim it damages their image because of the song’s use of vulgar and offensive language.

Alabaster Box is asking the court for GH₵15 million in damages. They also want the song removed from all music platforms, an order stopping any future performances, and a full report on the money made from the track.

Although Medikal removed part of the song on YouTube, the original version is allegedly still on other platforms like Audiomack, Boomplay, Spotify, and Apple . The group says this is not enough.

After many attempts to serve Medikal with court papers and failing, the court has now allowed them to post a notice at the Accra High Court, send messages to Medikal’s official Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) accounts, and send a WhatsApp message to his manager, Kofi Jam.

These messages must be visible or active for 21 days.

The National Association of Retired Police Officers (NARPO-Ghana) has extended heartfelt congratulations to COP (Rtd) Nathan Kofi Boakye on his appointment to the Ghana Police Council.

Kofi Boakye, who currently serves as Director of Operations at the Presidency, was recently sworn in as a member of the Council representing retired senior police officers.

In a statement signed by DCOP George Anko-Bil (Rtd), National Secretary of NARPO-Ghana, the association described Boakye’s elevation as a recognition of his unwavering dedication, experience, and leadership within the Police Service.

“As the National Secretary, it is an honour to formally write on behalf of the Functional Executive Committee of NARPO-GH to express our heartfelt congratulations on your elevation to represent retired senior officers at the National Police Council,” the statement read in part.

“This prestigious appointment is a testament to your dedication, expertise, and leadership. We are proud to have you on our team and look forward to your valuable contributions.”

The association expressed optimism that Boakye’s representation on the Council would accelerate efforts to formalise NARPO-GH’s recognition in the national framework, particularly within the ongoing constitutional review process.

“With your elevation, we at the National Association of Retired Police Officers — comprising both retired senior and junior officers — hope to witness the fast-tracking of our recognition under the national constitution through the current review of the 1992 Constitution,” the statement added.

COP (Rtd) Boakye was among the members of the Ghana Police Council sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama on June 10, 2025, in accordance with Article 201 of the 1992 Constitution. Vice President H.E. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang chairs the Council.

Other members include:

  • Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for the Interior

  • Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, Attorney General and Minister for Justice

  • Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno

  • Daniel Owusu Nyampong (Esq.)

  • DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor

  • Angel Lolo (Esq.)

  • Rose Bio Atinga

  • Benson Atongo Baba

In his remarks during the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama underscored the Council’s constitutional responsibility to uphold professionalism, fairness, transparency, and accountability in the Ghana Police Service.

He tasked the Council with addressing issues related to promotions, postings, seniority, and internal concerns within the Service.

The President also emphasised the need to foster a culture of discipline, justice, and respect for human rights.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, in her acceptance speech, pledged to lead the Council with transparency and inclusiveness. She reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to strengthening public trust and promoting a professional and honourable Police Service.

Women leaders call for urgent climate action ahead of COP30

The Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) is calling on world leaders, financial institutions, and corporations to act urgently on climate change.

The group is demanding new policies that match the scale of the growing climate and social crises facing the world.

WECAN made the call during the opening day of the Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice: Path to COP30 and Beyond, a virtual event bringing together over 125 women leaders from 50 countries.

The assembly features policymakers, government officials, and community activists working together to find just and effective climate solutions.

The main message from WECAN and its partners is that the world must stop fossil fuel extraction, end deforestation, and support women’s leadership and gender equity in climate policy.

WECAN’s Founder and Executive Director, Osprey Orielle Lake, opened the event by stressing the need for women-led climate solutions. She said: “Women are not just fighting for climate justice, we are innovating it.”

“Research shows that everywhere in the world, where women have greater agency and political power, carbon emissions are lower and social and environmental policies are more effective. Yet women remain vastly underrepresented in climate negotiations and decision-making,” she said.

She also linked the slow global climate response to wider political problems, including the rise of authoritarianism and the failure to support women’s rights.

“And right now, this is playing out heavily in the United States. We are seeing rollbacks on environmental protections, attacks on reproductive rights, criminalisation of peaceful protests, and disinformation campaigns targeting climate and racial justice.

To build the healthy and just world that we want, we must amplify women’s voices not just as participants but as the architects of a thriving future.”

Speakers from countries including South Africa, Fiji, Ecuador, and Norway also stressed the importance of stronger climate commitments ahead of COP30 in Brazil. The event was supported by more than 160 organisations, including Amazon Watch, Women Deliver, and Rainforest Action Network.

A social justice consultant from South Africa, Zukiswa White, joined from Bonn, where the UN is holding a climate meeting. She shared her concerns about the lack of strong political will to act, despite rising global temperatures.

“Delaying meaningful progress on achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement must be understood for what it is: it is a matter of politics. Our work is to make climate justice outcomes a political inevitability.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) took a significant step toward revitalising its internal structures and energising its base as the 2025 Conference of the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus of Ghana commenced at the Longford Royal Centre in Kumasi, running from June 20 to 22.

Themed “Building Momentum: The Role of NPP Constituency Chairmen in Uplifting the Party Towards 2028 and Beyond,” the conference gathered over 275 constituency chairmen, party executives, and dignitaries to discuss strategy, internal cohesion, and preparations for the 2028 general elections.

Delivering the keynote address, Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA) inspired the crowd with a message of unity, discipline, and renewal. His speech was a passionate call to action that resonated deeply with party members grappling with internal challenges and public perception issues following the 2024 elections.

COKA emphasised the dangers of internal division and personal agendas, urging leaders to set aside religious, tribal, and economic differences in favour of collective strength.

Quoting Psalm 133:1, COKA declared: “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” He reminded the audience that the path to victory in 2028 requires forgiveness, teamwork, and a strategic commitment to ethical governance.

The speech also included a proposal to revise internal qualification structures, suggesting that only those who have served at polling station or constituency levels should be eligible to contest for higher office, including regional and national executive positions.

Throughout the address, Chairman COKA invoked powerful references from Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and African proverbs to emphasise unity, collaboration, and responsibility.

COKA also urged party executives to actively participate in decision-making, foster transparency, and embrace dissenting views within the boundaries of respectful democratic discourse.

The conference serves as a major turning point in the NPP’s organisational calendar, coming at a time when party members across the country are calling for reform, renewal, and stronger leadership structures.

As the three-day event continues, delegates are expected to break into working sessions focused on campaign strategy, grassroots mobilisation, and policy communication, all aimed at laying a solid foundation for the 2028 elections.

With Chairman COKA’s rallying message still fresh in delegates’ minds, the NPP appears poised to take the first serious step toward internal healing and political resurgence.

Ghanaian TikToker, Kwadwo Emmanuel, popularly known as “Obolo,” who was implicated in a recent shooting incident that led to the death of a young woman known as “Yaa Baby,” has been released from police custody.

On June 10, 2025, news emerged that Ghanaian TikToker Hayford Boateng, popularly known as GH Kobby, had allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, identified as “Yaa Baby.”

Three individuals, GH Kobby, Obolo, and Michael Kabutey, were arrested in connection with the tragic incident, which took place in Yeji.

In a new development, GhanaWeb Entertainment has gathered that both Obolo (also known as “Ashawo”) and Michael Kabutey were granted bail by the Ghana Police Service on June 25, 2025.

Videos circulating on social media captures Obolo seated in front of a police station, conversing with unidentified individuals following his release.

Meanwhile, GH Kobby remains in police custody and is reportedly awaiting trial.

Obolo’s release has since sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with netizens who were previously calling for his release now weighing in on his potential involvement in the case.

Obolo’s Involvement: Eyewitness account

Following the news of Yaa Baby’s untimely death, an eyewitness came forward with claims that GH Kobby instructed Obolo to retrieve the weapon used in the shooting from his car.

“We were there when GH Kobby told Ashawo to bring the gun from his car. After he brought it, Kobby and the others left the scene. I warned Kobby to be careful because he said he wanted to fire a warning shot. He was struggling to load the bullets. I even told the lady [Yaa Baby] to move away from him, but she didn’t listen,” the eyewitness recounted.

The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah (MP), has thrown his full support behind the adoption of nuclear energy as a viable alternative power source for the nation.

Speaking at a Stakeholders’ Engagement on the Draft Bill to establish Ghana’s Nuclear Power Company in Accra, the deputy minister emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to integrating nuclear power into Ghana’s energy mix as part of a broader strategy to ensure energy security and sustainability.

“Ghana’s energy demands are growing rapidly, and we must diversify our sources to ensure a stable and sustainable supply of power. Nuclear energy is a strategic imperative. It offers base-load power to support industrialisation, low-carbon electricity to meet our climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, and enhanced energy security,” Gyan-Mensah stated.

He further underscored the crucial role nuclear power can play in Ghana’s green transition agenda stating, “Nuclear energy offers a clean, reliable, and efficient alternative that can significantly reduce our reliance on liquid fuels and contribute to our climate goals.”

The deputy minister also highlighted the multiple advantages of nuclear energy, particularly its capacity to produce large-scale electricity with minimal greenhouse gas emissions.

He stressed the government’s dedication to implementing the highest international safety standards.

Zambia in last-minute court bid to stop ex-president’s burial in South Africa

0

Edgar Lungu and his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, had a tense relationship for years Edgar Lungu and his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, had a tense relationship for years

The Zambian government has filed an urgent case in a South African court seeking to stop the burial of former President Edgar Lungu, state media reports.

This is the latest twist in a row between the government and Lungu’s family over his burial, after the family opted for a private ceremony in South Africa, rather than a full state funeral at home.

The Zambian attorney general has requested the court to halt the burial, scheduled for Wednesday, until the dispute is resolved, state broadcaster ZNBC reports.

Local media quote the family as saying that the funeral would go ahead as planned, as they had not been served with court papers.

The dispute follows a long-standing feud between Lungu and his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, with Lungu’s family saying he had indicated that Hichilema should not attend his funeral.

Following Lungu’s death in South Africa aged 68, the family wanted to be in charge of the funeral arrangements, including the repatriation of his body, but the Zambian authorities sought to take control.

The government and his family later agreed he would have a state funeral before relations broke down over the precise arrangements, prompting the family to opt for a burial in South Africa.

President Hichilema has since argued that Lungu, as a former president, “belongs to the nation of Zambia” and should be buried in the country.

In the court papers, the Zambian attorney general, Mulilo D Kabesha, reportedly contends that a state funeral is a formal public event with military honours, intended to honour a person of national significance.

He is suing the family, including former first lady Esther Lungu and four children, family lawyer Makebi Zulu and the funeral home where the body is being kept.

He argues that personal wishes should not override the greater public interest, citing the case of founding President Kenneth Kaunda.

In 2021, Kaunda’s family said he wanted to be laid to rest next to his wife and not at the site designated by the government.

However, the government went ahead and buried Kaunda at Embassy Memorial Park in Lusaka.

The current row over Lungu’s burial underscores the tense relationship between him and his successor, which played out in life and continues even in death.

When Lungu was president, Hichilema was locked up for over 100 days on treason charges after Hichilema’s motorcade allegedly refused to give way for him.

NPP’s flagbearer election timeline sparks controversy

0

Albert K. Salia Politics 4 minutes read

A Legal practitioner and  leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nii Ayikoi Otoo, has stated that the National Council of the party should have waited for the outcome of the National Delegates Conference in July before fixing the date for the election of a flag bearer for the 2028 general election.

“Since the National Delegates Conference will take place in July, let’s hold our horses and see how the whole thing plays out and start the conversation after the constitutional amendments,” he said.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Otoo, who is a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, said reading other views, it seemed to him that the party’s leadership needed to educate and engage more.

“To some, where a flag bearer is elected before other elections of party executives at all other levels are done, that changes what they are used to,” he said.

“Some even believe that approach leads to the person elected practising favouritism and nepotism, using only a small group to run the affairs of the party, especially his campaign team, and being emboldened to decide who to work with, which will deepen cracks in the party.

“One will call it politics of exclusion, which we saw in the recent past, where a leader could boldly say he could not work with other party officials,’ he said.

Mr Otoo added that there was also the risk of factionalism, whereby instead of losing parties coming on board to support the presidential candidate, they went about encouraging their supporters to  preach skirt and blouse voting.

Timetable

Mr Otoo said, “but before we could deal with that in July 2025, the Council has come out with a timetable for the election of a flag bearer by January 31, 2026, the justification being that when the flag bearer is elected early, he will be like an opposition leader who will speak on national issues on behalf of the party.”

He said it was the announcement of holding an early congress to elect a flag bearer that had sparked all the arguments about the party intending to reverse the time honoured bottom-up approach, saying that amounted to top-bottom approach.

“In other words, that the party will elect a flag bearer at the top before descending to elect party executives at all levels: from polling stations to area co-ordinators to constituency executives to regional executives and to national executives,” he stated.

Nothing different

Mr Otoo said the other view was that “nothing had really changed with the announcement of an early congress to elect the party’s flag bearer two years before the general election in 2028 since we are in opposition.”

Moreover, he said the four-year mandate given to the current party executives would not have expired by January 2026, and therefore, the party leadership at every level would still be in office by January 2026, and would be voting to select the flag bearer.

Probes

He said the history of committees set up to probe why the NPP lost elections showed that those reports were never published for some inexplicable reasons.

That, he said, often left the party faithful to conjecture and come out with their own reasons, saying that, “I am always at a loss to appreciate what the true reasons  why NPP did that.”

Context

The Prof Mike Oquaye Committee was set up to collect views on why NPP lost the 2024 general election.

The Committee later announced that it had concluded its mission and subsequently published its report.

Rather than make the report public or give the party members the slightest idea or an executive summary of the recommendations, the NEC directed that the party embarked on a constitution review without stating the areas of the party’s constitution which required amendments.

Conjecture

Mr Otoo said everything done to date since that announcement had been pure conjecture, drawing inferences from what the Prof Mike Oquaye Committee might have recommended, especially in the area of expanding the delegates system for the election of party executives at all levels, including the parliamentary and presidential candidates.

He said the popular view had been that all card bearing members having the right to vote, whereby the privileged tiny number of delegates who were allowed to vote would be scrapped, or enlarging the delegates system to avoid monetising the primaries.

“Not surprisingly, the overwhelming contributions to the Constitution Review Committee have largely settled on expansion of the delegates system,” he said.

D Black

Rapper and entrepreneur Desmond Kwesi Blackmore, popularly known as D Black, has revealed that he went through a mental breakdown in 2024 but chose to suffer in silence.

Speaking in an interview with Pulse Ghana, the artist shared that despite facing emotional challenges last year, he kept it all to himself, believing that opening up wouldn’t necessarily lead to a solution.

“Last year, I was doing so much business-wise, I broke down and nobody knew,” he said. “I don’t show emotions, so I just kept it. It’s between me and my God. If I tell you, what are you going to do about it?”

D-Black, who is known for his ventures in music, nightlife, and hospitality, said he prefers to rely on his faith during tough times. “The only person who can help me is God, so I tell Him. And in His time, He makes everything work.”

Despite the difficult period, the rapper assured fans that he is currently in a better mental and emotional space. “Right now, I am good,” he added.

’Remove COP (rtd) Kofi Boakye From Police Council’

0

COP (rtd) Nathan Kofi Boakye and President John Mahama

A gender activist has filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to remove Commissioner of Police (COP) (rtd.) Nathan Kofi Boakye from the newly constituted Police Council.

The suit, filed by Henrietta Nana Yaa Simpson, argues among other things that, the decision by President Mahama to ignore Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) (rtd.) Madam Florence Arthur – the person nominated by the National Association of Retired Police Officers to serve on the Police Council is unconstitutional, hence renders the decision to nominate COP (rtd.) Kofi Boakye null and void.

She is seeking a declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of clauses (f) and (g) of Article 201 as amended by section 7 of The Constitution of Ghana (Amendment) Act, 1996, (Act 527) and the relevant sections of the Police Service Act, 1970 (Act 350), it is the members of the National Association of Retired Police Officers who, through their legitimately elected executive members, have the sole and exclusive right and authority to nominate a senior retired officer of their number onto the Police Council.

The writ also argues that the power of the President to make nominations to the Police Council is, subject to the necessary qualifications and consultations, restricted to Article 201 clauses (a), (g) and (h) and does not extend to clause (f).

It further argues that it is an undeniable fact that prior to the inauguration of the Police Council on June 10, 2025, the National Association of Retired Police Officers had, by an official communication dated January 20, 2025, presented Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) (rtd.) Madam Florence Arthur as its nominee.

Madam Simpson is seeking the apex court to make a consequential declaration that the appointment of COP Boakye (rtd.) on the Council as the nominee of the National Association of Retired Police Officers by the unilateral fiat of the President without any reference to the leadership of the Association, is unconstitutional and a gross encroachment on the exclusive constitutional right of the Association.

“A declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of Articles 17, 201 (as amended by section 7 of The Constitution of Ghana (Amendment) Act, 1996, (Act 527)) and 296, the prescriptive removal of ACP (rtd.) Florence Arthur from the composition of the Police Council on the basis of her rank and gender is discriminatory and flies in the face of Article 17 of the Constitution.”

The writ wants a further order for the removal of COP (rtd.) Boakye from the Police Council and in his stead, the appointment or inclusion of ACP (rtd.) Florence Arthur onto the Police Council.

Statement of Case

The plaintiff argues in her statement of case that where the composition of the governing board or council of any public institution is by institutional representation, it is the respective institution’s and no other person or authority, including the President of the Republic, who have the power to nominate their own representative onto the relevant governing board or council.

It is the case of the plaintiff that in the instant case, it is not known by whose authority COP (rtd.) Kofi Boakye was nominated onto the Police Council as the representative of the Retired Senior Police Officers Association.

“The inclusion of the name of the 1st defendant (COP (rtd.) Kofi Boakye) onto the Police Council without the sanction by the leadership of the Association itself is a naked and indecent usurpation of the authority of the Association, unlawful and unconstitutional,” the plaintiff further argues.

The writ also avers that prior to the inauguration of the Police Council, ACP (rtd.) Ms. Florence Arthur had picked intelligence that some persons were scheming to exclude her from the membership of the yet-to-be-formed Council.

She, therefore, wrote to the President to essentially remind him of the constitutional imperatives in Article 201 and the practice of the Association over the years as to who represents them on the Council, but “this letter, though duly submitted, was not even dignified with an acknowledgment, much less, a response.”

The High Court in Kumasi has dismissed an appeal filed by a woman who accused her former partner of failing to marry her after 15 years of cohabitation.

The woman, Felicia Amoako, filed an appeal at the High Court after she lost the initial case she filed against her former partner, Abraham Otchere, at the Asokwa-Kumasi District Court.

She accused Otchere of breaching his promise to marry her after failing to honour an alleged marriage promise following 15 years of living as a couple.

She asked the court to declare her the owner of a parcel of land they had built a five-bedroom house on, which she claimed was purchased with her money.

The relief sought by the woman was outlined in the full judgment of the High Court, which was shared by The Law Platform, as follows:

(a) A declaration of title and ownership of the said piece of land with five-bedroom house lying and being referred to as Plot No. 210 at Ampabame No.1

(b) Breach of promise to marry –

Particulars of breach:

i. Non-performance of marriage when the time for performance was due

ii. Failing to fulfil plans to marry after fifteen years of cohabiting and holding themselves out as husband and wife

iii. Emotional and psychological trauma as a result of the cancellation of the intended marriage

iv. Special damages in respect of preparation towards the intended marriage

(c) An order to make the plaintiff account for the proceeds from the rent

(d) Damages

(e) Costs

(f) Any order as this court might deem fit

The High Court, presided over by Justice Dr Poku Adusei JA, upheld the ruling of the District Court, stating that the right to an action for the breach of promise to marry has restrictions by virtue of the Limitation Act, 1972 (NRCD 54).

Justice Poku Adusei rejected the relief for breaches of promises of marriage.

He also dismissed the other reliefs sought by Felicia Amoako, including title to the land on which the home of the never-wedded parties and their children sits.

I Was A Tomboy, My Ex-Husband Rebranded Me – Tiwa Savage

0

Tiwa Savage

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has shared how her image as a glamorous pop star wasn’t always part of the plan.

In a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, hosted by Joey Akan, Tiwa revealed that she was once a tomboy before her ex-husband and former manager, Tunji “Teebillz” Balogun, transformed her image.

“Before music, I was a songwriter in the U.S. wearing baggy jeans and T-shirts. I wasn’t trying to be sexy at all,” she said. “But Teebillz saw a gap in the market and rebranded me into something completely different.”

Tiwa explained that when she moved back to Nigeria to begin her singing career, Teebillz encouraged her to hit the gym, wax her eyebrows, wear wigs, and embrace a more polished, sexy look—an image that later became her signature style.

She recalled how her 2014 music video Wanted stirred controversy. “It was me being rebellious,” she said. “People were saying I wasn’t sexy anymore because I was married. So I did something bold to prove them wrong.”

However, her new image wasn’t always welcomed. Tiwa revealed that she faced rejection at shows and even had one of her songs, Love Me, banned on TV because of her outfits. “Some governors’ wives didn’t want me performing in skimpy dresses,” she added.

Despite the backlash and multiple rejections from major labels like Mo’Hits, Storm Records, and EME, Tiwa Savage pushed through. Encouragement from fans and friends kept her going, and she has since become one of Africa’s most influential music stars.

“I’m naturally not a sexy person. I’m a tomboy. But that transformation was part of the journey,” she said.

Eswatini, Ghana Strengthen Ties –

President John Mahama in a chat with King Mswati III during his visit

THE KING of Eswatini, King Mswati III, has called for enhanced trade between Ghana and other African countries during his first-ever visit to Ghana, stating that this cooperation is crucial in strengthening economic ties between African nations.

Speaking during his visit to the Jubilee House, King Mswati III stated that his historic visit marked the beginning of a new era of cooperation between Ghana and Eswatini. He added that African leaders must work together to enhance trade and economic ties, so the continent can unlock its full potential and achieve sustainable development.

“We are very happy to be here from the Kingdom of Eswatini to strengthen cooperation and ties between our two countries. We look forward to meeting the people of Ghana and exchanging a lot of information, as we have a lot in common, especially when it comes to culture, lifestyles, and more. We can share a lot of ideas and develop new ones,” he said.

King Mswati III added that trade is a key area of focus, particularly with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) efforts to promote intra-African trade, indicating that, unfortunately, trade within Africa is currently very limited.

“It’s high time we turned this situation around and increased trade among African countries. We are here to explore opportunities and see how we can enhance trade between our nations. Infrastructure development is crucial for trade, and it’s an area that requires attention in our development as a continent,” he stated.

President John Mahama, on his part, expressed the country’s willingness to cooperate with Eswatini in the areas of trade and commerce, stating that “Ghana is much ready to cooperate with Eswatini to explore the various opportunities that may come up between the two countries.”

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries was signed during this meeting by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Senator Pholile Shakantu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Eswatini.

King Mswati III is currently in Kumasi as a distinguished guest of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The itinerary in the Asante capital includes official visits to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and a tour of the historic Manhyia Palace Museum.

King Mswati III is also scheduled to address the National House of Chiefs and attend a grand durbar of chiefs organised in his honour at Manhyia Palace. Additionally, a royal banquet would be held at the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene, in Kumasi on Friday evening.

On Saturday, the final day of the visit, King Mswati III will join Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at a ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) before departing from Ghana.

King Mswati III’s visit to Kumasi is expected to significantly deepen the historical and cultural links between the Asante Kingdom and the southern African nation.

Delap, extreme heat & money – Chelsea’s Club World Cup so far

0

Delap, who signed from Ipswich before the tournament, made his debut in the opening game against LAFC and was impressive. His chipped cross was his first assist for the club as he set up Enzo Fernandez’s second goal in a 2-0 win.

The striker struggled to make an impact on his first start in the following game against Flamengo, but scored his first goal for Chelsea in the final Group D match.

Delap’s deft touch and spin gave him space to cut inside and place his shot past goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said.

“It’s a great feeling, we needed to win and to get a goal is a special feeling,” said Delap.

Maresca added: “We expected the process to be quick with Liam because we know him and he knows us with the way we play.

“Against Flamengo he had three clear chances to score goals. That is already a good feeling because it means he is in the right position.”

Winger Pedro Neto excelled in the first two matches, scoring in both after rapid, powerful dribbles.

Fernandez also has a goal and two assists in the tournament, having scored eight goals and provided 14 assists last season.

Government sued over Kofi Boakye’s Police Council post

COP (Rtd) Kofi Boakye's [M] appointment to the Police Council has been challenged COP (Rtd) Kofi Boakye’s [M] appointment to the Police Council has been challenged

Henritta Nana Yaa Simpson, a gender activist and citizen of Ghana, has challenged what she claims is the unconstitutional appointment of COP (Rtd.) Nathan Kofi Boakye to the Police Council, citing the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction.

In a writ filed at the Supreme Court, Ms. Simpson argues that the position reserved for a representative of retired senior police officers under Article 201(f) of the 1992 Constitution was unlawfully filled without consulting the elected leadership of the association.

She contends that ACP (Rtd.) Ms. Florence Arthur—the first woman elected president of the National Association of Retired Police Officers (NARPO)—was the rightful nominee, according to a report by CitiNewsroom.com.

Reports indicate that the Presidency ignored Ms. Arthur’s nomination, which had been formally submitted by her predecessor, without any acknowledgment or explanation.

According to the lawsuit, this action represents a “naked usurpation” of the association’s rights and contravenes long-standing custom and tradition, whereby the president of the association automatically serves as its representative on the Police Council. Ms. Simpson also alleges that bias based on gender and rank may have influenced the decision to bypass ACP (Rtd.) Florence Arthur.

Among the several declarations sought in the suit—brought under Articles 2, 17(1), 130, 201, and 296 of the Constitution—is a clarification that “retired senior police officers,” as defined in the Constitution, include individuals who retired at or above the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police.

The suit further asks the court to declare that the President cannot unilaterally appoint a representative of the association to the Police Council without consultation.

Additionally, the plaintiff is requesting that the court remove Nathan Kofi Boakye from the Council and install ACP (Rtd.) Florence Arthur in his place.

Ms. Simpson’s suit argues that the Presidency’s actions violate constitutional principles of non-discrimination, institutional autonomy, and the duty to consult. The Attorney General and the Police Council are named as co-defendants, along with Mr. Kofi Boakye.

Chelsea qualify for round of 16 of CWC after win against Esperance FC

Christopher Nkunku defends ball in Chelsea vs Esperance FC match Christopher Nkunku defends ball in Chelsea vs Esperance FC match

Chelsea secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Tunisian champions Esperance, advancing to the last 16 of the Club World Cup.

Goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap, and Tyrique George sealed the victory for the Blues in the sweltering heat at Lincoln Financial Field.

Chelsea dominated the match, despite only needing a draw to advance.

They took control with two goals in first-half stoppage time: Tosin Adarabioyo’s header from an Enzo Fernandez free-kick, followed by Liam Delap’s clinical finish.

Tyrique George sealed the 3-0 win with a shot in added time that slipped past Esperance goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said.

The Blues bounced back from last Friday’s 3-1 loss to Flamengo with a convincing 3-0 win over Esperance, securing second place in Group D.

The Brazilian side topped the group, while Esperance’s loss meant elimination from the tournament.

Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, made eight changes to the lineup, giving fringe players like 19-year-old Josh Acheampong a chance to shine.

Acheampong impressed at right-back, while Enzo Fernandez, one of the few starters retained, and played a crucial role in the first-half goals.

Chelsea will face Benfica in their next match, scheduled for Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This matchup is a rematch of the 2013 Europa League final, which Chelsea won.

Benfica topped Group C after defeating Bayern Munich.

The winner of this match will advance to face either Palmeiras or Botafogo in the quarterfinals.

Chelsea dominated the match despite the heat, although Esperance had a momentary reprieve when a late penalty decision was overturned by VAR.

The incident occurred when substitute Andrey Santos’ shot touched a defender’s arm, initially resulting in a penalty call, but the referee reversed the decision after VAR review.

With temperatures nearing 30°C (86°F), both teams struggled with the conditions, but Chelsea’s depth proved decisive.

The Blues will now shift focus to Benfica, aiming to continue their Club World Cup journey.

BoG dismissals must be viewed separately from political layoffs – Dr Kwapong advises Minority

0

CDD-Ghana Fellow and Director for the Democracy Project, Dr John Osae Kwapong, has urged the Minority in Parliament to refrain from conflating the recent dismissals at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) with politically motivated terminations across the public sector.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr Kwapong advised the Minority to consider the specific circumstances surrounding the BoG dismissals before grouping them with other cases allegedly tied to a post-election purge.

His comments follow a press conference by the Minority on 24 June, during which they strongly criticised the termination of over 100 BoG employees. The opposition group described the action as unconstitutional, unlawful, and procedurally flawed.

According to the Minority, the dismissed workers were lawfully recruited, fully vetted, and had already been contributing meaningfully to national development. They attributed the terminations to a directive issued by the Chief of Staff on 11 February 2025, which instructed the revocation of all public sector appointments made after 7 December 2024.

“This directive is wholly unconstitutional and unlawful,” the Minority said. “No such directive has legal authority, and institutions must not act on political whims.”

However, Dr Kwapong challenged this framing, stressing the need to differentiate between political dismissals and performance-based contract decisions.

“From the news reports I have read in full, this particular Bank of Ghana case is not part of the directive issued by the Chief of Staff concerning all persons hired after the December 7 election,” he noted.

“What I understand is that this situation relates to the conclusion of a six-month probationary period, which the Bank of Ghana says these affected employees did not satisfactorily complete, preventing their transition from probationary status to a more permanent appointment.”

Dr Kwapong cautioned that if these facts hold, then the BoG terminations must be treated as employment decisions tied to performance rather than as part of a politically motivated retrenchment.

“If this concerns work contracts and employee performance, it should be handled differently from cases perceived as politically motivated firings. It is important for the Minority to make that distinction and not group these situations together,” he stressed.

The accident scene

Three students and a Taxi driver have died following an accident on the Winneba- Apam road on Monday.

According to the Winneba Municipal Fire Service, the incident occurred when a Toyota RAV4 vehicle attempted to overtake another vehicle on that stretch.

Report indicates that the vehicle, with registration number GN 5505-18 heading towards Apam, was unable to overtake a vehicle ahead of it just after the Winneba junction, and collided head-on with a Hyundai Jet Taxi.

According to an eyewitness, the driver and one other student died on the spot, while three of the students who were in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba also died Tuesday morning.

Winneba Municipal Fire Service Commander, DO2 Frederick Adu-Roku, confirmed that the three students who died were students of St. Paul’s School and Uncle Rich Preparatory School in Winneba.

The Fire Service Commander said its preliminary investigations revealed the accident was caused by errors on the part of the drivers, and therefore appealed to drivers to be cautious on roads and adhere strictly to traffic regulations when driving.

Deputy Energy minister backs nuclear power for Ghana’s future

0

The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah (MP), has thrown his weight behind nuclear energy as a vital component of the country’s power generation mix.

He said this is a decisive move to bolster Ghana’s long-term energy security.

Addressing participants at a Stakeholders’ Engagement on the draft bill to establish Ghana’s Nuclear Power Company, under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, he affirmed the government’s commitment to advancing nuclear power as a strategic national asset.

“Ghana’s energy demands are rising rapidly, and we must diversify our sources to ensure a stable and sustainable power supply. Nuclear energy is a strategic imperative. It offers base-load power to support industrialisation, low-carbon electricity to meet our climate obligations under the Paris Agreement, and enhanced energy security,” the minister stated.

He stressed that nuclear energy presents a clean, reliable, and efficient alternative that can substantially reduce Ghana’s dependence on fossil fuels while supporting national climate ambitions.

Highlighting the broader benefits, the Deputy Minister noted that nuclear power can generate large volumes of electricity with minimal greenhouse gas emissions, making it a critical tool in the fight against climate change.

He also reiterated the government’s unwavering dedication to upholding the highest international safety standards.

“The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has recognised Ghana’s strong commitment to nuclear development, and we are proud of the strides made under the Three-Phase Milestone Approach for newcomer countries,” he added. “Our decisions will be guided by science, data, and the best interests of the Ghanaian people.”

Mr. Gyan-Mensah reassured the public that the government is committed to transparency, accountability, and risk-informed planning. He emphasised that all appropriate safeguards would be implemented to protect the environment and public health.

“We will continue to hold wide-ranging public consultations to ensure citizens’ concerns are heard and addressed,” he said.

The draft legislation is seen as a pivotal step towards establishing a comprehensive legal and institutional framework to drive Ghana’s peaceful use of nuclear energy in alignment with international standards.

NPP Flagbearer Race: Kumasi Traders Endorse ‘Fresh Face’ Adutwum

0

Traders at the Kumasi Central Business Area have openly endorsed Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, saying he is the “fresh face” in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 presidential election.

At a press conference on Monday, June 23, 2025, the traders, mostly secondhand fabric and shoe dealers, declared their full support for the former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, urging NPP delegates to vote massively for him in the party’s flagbearer contest slated for January next year.

“We believe Dr. Yaw Adutwum is the fresh face the party needs. He connects with ordinary people like us. Under his leadership, we can hope for better policies for market women and traders,” one of the traders said.

The group described Dr. Adutwum as a visionary leader with a deep understanding of their daily struggles, and commended his track record in both education and community development.

They credited him as a key figure behind the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, recounting his vital role in making the initiative a reality.

“He was the rock on which Nana (President Akufo-Addo) did the Free SHS. When Nana Addo saw him managing his schools successfully in the US with free education there, he called him to Ghana to help introduce Free SHS here, and Dr. Adutwum delivered perfectly,” another trader said.

The traders also praised Dr. Adutwum for his quick response when parts of the Kumasi market were gutted by fire, noting that he provided significant financial support to help affected traders rebuild their businesses.

“Dr. Adutwum understands business. When our market got destroyed by fire, he came and supported us with big money. He was there for us when we needed help,” they emphasised.

They further applauded his efforts in making the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector more attractive to Ghanaian youth, describing his contributions as key to accelerating national development. His work in promoting Science, Mathematics, and Technology education across the country also received high praise.

The Kumasi traders believe that Dr. Adutwum’s leadership will bring fresh energy and practical solutions to the NPP and the nation.

“We need someone who is clean, innovative, and ready to focus on the needs of everyday Ghanaians. Dr. Adutwum is that fresh face,” they stated.

The traders again called on NPP delegates to choose Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum as the party’s flagbearer, expressing confidence that he will represent the best interests of traders, market women, and the wider Ghanaian public.

The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, made the call when the MP paid a courtesy call on him and the leadership of the Presbyterian Council at the Church’s national headquarters at Osu in Accra yesterday.

He said, “We are proud that you’re a great product of the Presbyterian Church and PRESEC, and we encourage you to continue allowing those values to shine through in your public and private life. We bless you today and charge you to carry this responsibility with humility and reverence. May your decisions reflect the faith and discipline we stand for.”

The high-level engagement formed part of Dr. Acheampong’s broader efforts to deepen dialogue with key institutions, affirming the importance of faith-based leadership in national development and governance.

The meeting offered a platform for spiritual fellowship, institutional conversation, and personal reflection on the values that have shaped his journey.

Addressing the Moderator and Council members, Dr. Acheampong acknowledged the historical contributions of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana to education, health, ethics, and civic responsibility, while commending the Church for remaining a strong moral compass in national life.

“The Presbyterian Church has not only nurtured great minds through its schools and seminaries, but has also produced leaders of integrity across all sectors,” Dr. Acheampong said. “It is only right that we continue to engage and draw from the wisdom and values of the Church,” he added.

Dr. Acheampong also emphasised the need for continued collaboration between state actors and faith institutions, especially in matters of education reform, community development, youth mentorship, and character formation.

In his personal reflections, the former Minister for Agriculture spoke with emotion about his roots in the Presbyterian Church and the formative influence it has had on his character and leadership style.

“I am a product of the Church, from infancy to now.  From my earliest days at Mile 7 tolling the church bell with a car rim and crankshaft, to the spiritual mentorship I received from many revered leaders, I have always been grounded in Presbyterian values,” he said.

He recalled his time at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon, as one of the most defining periods of his life.

The Church leadership concluded the meeting with a time of prayer and anointing, asking for God’s continued guidance and strength for Dr. Acheampong. The Moderator offered words of encouragement, calling on the MP to be an example of principled leadership in an era of political cynicism.

The visit was described by the Church leadership as a welcome gesture that demonstrates humility, responsibility, and an appreciation for spiritual accountability in public leadership.

Dr. Acheampong’s visit comes at a time when public conversations around leadership and values are gaining renewed attention, particularly as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for internal party transitions and long-term national planning.

The MP has consistently maintained that faith and public service are not mutually exclusive, and that moral leadership is essential for national development.

“Whatever role I play as an MP, as a servant of the people, I carry with me the teachings, discipline, and truth instilled in me by this Church,” he said.

The meeting between Dr. Acheampong and the Presbyterian Council was not a campaign stop, but a symbolic return to the foundation upon which his leadership has been built, demonstrating how political leadership and spiritual mentorship can coexist.

The Policy Action Research on NGLED launched

0

By Albert Allotey

Accra, June 24, GNA – The Policy Action Research on Youth Economic Inclusion through Next-Generation Local Economic Development (NGLED), started by the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) in March 2024, has been officially launched.

The ILGS with support from the Knowledge Platform on Inclusive Development Policies (INCLUDE) is implementing a three-year (2024-2026) policy action to analyse the entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial behaviour among young people and local government officials in five selected Municipal and District Assemblies in the country.

The Assemblies are the Sekondi/Takoradi Municipal Assembly, Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal Assembly, Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly, Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly, and Atiwa District Assembly.

The ILGS facilitated the setting up of five business youth groups in the selected districts and provided capital support ranging from GHS 60,000 to GHS75,000 per group as well as mentorship, training, formalisation, and market access and established special purpose vehicle (SPV) to manage the process, among other things.

The groups are into poultry, fish farming, and livestock rearing.

The launch of the project was to showcase the five youth businesses under the NGLED action research to government, development partners and members of the INCLUDE knowledge platform from other African countries.

The preliminary findings of the research would be used to inform government policy on local economic development, youth enterprises and the ‘Adwumawura.’

Madam Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs performed the launch on behalf of the sector minister, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim.

in a speech read for him, Mr Ibrahim described the project as a holistic model for sustainable youth entrepreneurship and local economic development.

He said, “It is important to highlight that this initiative is not operating in isolation but grounded in the Local Economic Development Policy (2024-2029) launched last year by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.”

He noted that the policy provided a strategic framework for transforming the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) into engines of economic growth.

Mr Ibrahim said the NGLED was aligned seamlessly with the broader vision of President John Dramani Mahama, particularly the Adwumawura Programme and the 24-Hour Economy Policy.

“These government flagship programmes aim to create 10,000 youth-led businesses annually, establish a microcredit institution with seed fund of GHS750 million, promote graduate cooperative for public and private businesses, and scale up district-level enterprises while supporting artisans with start-up kits,” he stated.

The Minister reaffirmed government’s unwavering commitment to embedding job creation at the heart of local governance and called on all stakeholders, international and local development partners to rise to action.

He urged MMDAs to embrace their roles as economic enablers and leaders while encouraging the youth to be pioneers of new economic future for their communities and Ghana as whole by seizing the opportunities being created.

Professor Nicholas Awortwi, the Director of the ILGS, in a welcoming address, said the ILGS and other institutions since 2019 had argued that Ghana’s decentralisation and local governance must shift and consider the adoption of Democratic Developmental Local Governance agenda.

“Democratic developmental local governance system prioritises local democracy and local economic development as key focus of decentralisation in a country, and that developmental local government promotes local industry policy, job creation, income growth and manages municipality as a business and not bureaucracy,” he stated.

Prof Awortwi said through the study the ILGS aimed to socially engineer a change in ideology and strategy of local governments in pursuit of local economic development based on the principles that “It is the business of local governments to do business in partnership with young people to create jobs and improve their income levels.”

“In this approach, the local governments directly support young people in productive economic activities, encourage youth partnerships and provides entrepreneurial support and business development through coaching and mentorship,” he added.

The occasion was used to present Business Registration Certificates to the five Youth Business Groups.

‘No Ghanaian asks a doctor’s religion at the hospital’ – Kofi Tonto ‘fires’ Stephen Amoah

Kofi Tonto is an aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Kofi Tonto is an aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

An aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has criticised the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah, for supposedly injecting religion into Ghana’s political discourse.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Kofi Tonto expressed deep concern over recent comments made by Dr Amoah, a known ally of Kennedy Agyapong, who suggested that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor performance in the 2024 elections was partly due to Dr Bawumia’s Islamic background.

Tonto condemned the remarks as divisive and irresponsible, warning against the dangers of religious politics in Ghana’s democracy.

“No Ghanaian goes to the hospital and asks for the religious background of the doctor before treatment,” he said. “What matters is competence, and the same standard should apply to our leaders.”

He further emphasised that Dr Amoah, as a legislator, should know better and act in a manner that promotes national unity rather than religious division.

“Religious identity should never be a disqualifying factor in politics. It’s dangerous and unnecessary to bring faith into the debate about who should lead this country,” Tonto added.

Tonto argued that track record and competence, not faith, should be the focus of political discourse.

‘We’ll block our roads if works don’t resume by October ‘– Sipim Narh Tekpertey

Road users in Yilo Krobo are battling the inconveniences of the abandoned rehabilitation works Road users in Yilo Krobo are battling the inconveniences of the abandoned rehabilitation works

Correspondence from Eastern Region

Road users in the Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo Municipalities of the Eastern Region are grappling with the inconveniences caused by the abandoned rehabilitation works on the Trom-Somanya-Kpong and Somanya-Asitey roads, stirring tensions among residents and motorists.

The stalled road projects have drawn widespread concern, including from traditional leaders who have openly voiced their displeasure over the six-month delay since the current government assumed office.

Sipim Narh Tekpertey II of Manya-Aklomuase in the Manya Krobo Traditional Area has joined the chorus of calls for the resumption of works on the road. He warned that failure to resume construction could prompt residents to embark on a demonstration to press home their demands.

Addressing the media, the frustrated traditional leader criticized the deteriorating condition of the roads and issued a stern warning that, if work does not resume immediately, the stretch will be rendered impassable—especially for limestone-hauling trucks.

“We’re giving them up to October, which is our festival month. If they fail to resume work on our roads, the government will not be happy with our actions. We will block all limestone-hauling trucks from using the road, and then they will understand how angry we are,” he declared.

The road serves as a key route for limestone-hauling trucks from nearby Odugblase and other mines, which Sipim Tekpertey blames for accelerating the deterioration of the roads in the area.

He emphasized that the Krobo constituencies—Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, and Upper Manya Krobo—have consistently supported the NDC, delivering strong numbers in recent and past elections. According to him, the people deserve to benefit from national development projects.

Notable Krobo appointees in the Mahama administration include Seth Terkper, Policy Advisor to the President; COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Inspector General of Police; Rita Akosua Awatey, Eastern Regional Minister; Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, Deputy Interior Minister; Gideon Aryeequaye, Acting Executive Secretary of the Creative Arts Council; and Nathaniel Tetteh, Director of the National Service Authority – Eastern Region.

Sipim Tekpertey urged chiefs, youth, and road users to demand accountability from their leaders.

Meanwhile, contractors on the Somanya-Kpong and Somanya-Asitey roads have attributed the stalled work to a lack of government funding.

Billy Brigham Deku, Project Manager at Generals Construction Limited, which is handling the two projects, cited the unavailability of funds from the government as the main reason for the delay. He noted that the company has pre-financed the projects so far, but all efforts to secure payments from both past and present administrations have proven futile.

Deku added that the company is also working on other roads in the Eastern Region, including the Mamfe-Larteh, Tafo-Kukurantumi, and Adeiso-Kasoa roads, which are also suffering from a lack of funding.

Rehabilitation of the 11-kilometre Somanya Roundabout-Kpong road began in June 2024 and was expected to be completed within two and a half years. However, contractors warned that ongoing funding delays could derail the work schedule, prolong the completion timeline, and continue to cause hardship for commuters and residents.

Residents and shop owners have expressed concerns about health hazards caused by the excessive dust generated by the stalled construction. Commuters also lament the inconvenience and health risks associated with the situation, which has forced many drivers to avoid the road altogether.

Affected residents have appealed to the government to release the necessary funds to enable the contractors to resume and expedite the work. They are also requesting regular watering of the road to reduce the dust while construction is ongoing.

The reconstruction of the 11-kilometre road became necessary due to its complete deterioration. Originally asphalted in 2016 at a cost of over GHS 30 million under the previous NDC administration, the road began to fail drastically just two years later, prompting the need for a full rehabilitation.

PURC to increase electricity bills from July 1, 2025 PURC to increase electricity bills from July 1, 2025

Starting next month, Ghanaians will have to pay extra for power and water as tariffs for both are set to go up from July 1, 2025.

This was contained in a statement from the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC).

Residential electricity users would experience a 2.45% rate increase, according to the commission.

The tariff adjustment, which applies to residential, non-residential, and special load tariff (SLT) customers, is based on a detailed analysis of macroeconomic and operational factors, including inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising fuel costs.

The adjustment takes into account a projected average inflation rate of 20.67%, a Ghana Cedi to US Dollar exchange rate of GH¢10.3052, and an increase in the weighted average cost of gas (WACoG) to USD 7.7134/MMBtu.

“The Commission has carefully analysed the existing parameters and, considering the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians, has approved a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs across board and 0% increment in water tariffs,” the statement noted.

The new tariffs become effective from July 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025.

Meanwhile, the PURC has confirmed that water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of 2025, maintaining a 0.00% adjustment rate.

You can be an old guy, but if you’re incompetent, you won’t win – Asah-Asante

0

Political Scientist, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, says competence and a strong understanding of Ghana’s challenges—particularly economic ones—must be the deciding factors in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries, not popularity or experience alone.

Speaking on Joy FM’s , Dr. Asah-Asante dismissed arguments that a candidate’s longevity or familiarity in the political space gives them an automatic edge.

“You can be an old guy who has contested many times and is well known, but if you are incompetent, you are incompetent,” he stated. “If you don’t have the support of the people, you don’t have them.”

He was responding to arguments made by some within the Bawumia camp that it is easier to market a candidate who has already “tested the waters.”

Dr. Asah-Asante, however, countered that political success is not built on repetition, but on relevance, strategy, and credibility.

“What the people want is somebody with the knowledge, with the understanding of the economy and how it works—not any propagandist style of positioning,” he added. “We want people who are the real men and understand the real issues confronting this country.”

He acknowledged that the leading contenders—Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Adutwum—all bring unique attributes to the race. However, he emphasized that it is their grasp of Ghana’s problems and ability to propose credible solutions that will determine who emerges victorious.

Dr. Asah-Asante also stated that records, strategy, and messaging that resonate with the electorate will be the major factors that “separate the chaff from the real input.”

NPP primary delegates: ‘Gods’ of second chances?

0

A Good friend once said to me, “my father is not a God of second chances.”

I often think of that because there are people or situations we encounter in life where we may want a second chance to make it right.

I am sure we have all encountered people in our lives and on whose toes, we may have stepped, consciously or unconsciously, who vowed never to forgive us.

But I believe in the importance of showing grace and appreciating the power of redemption.

Does showing grace and offering redemption belong in the political realm as well?

Since the 2024 election and with the announcement of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 presidential primary slated for January 31, 2026, one of the many emerging conversations about Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy is the question of political grace and redemption.

The question is simply this: Should the party retain him or go with a different candidate for the 2028 election?

To borrow the words of my good friend — should the NPP delegates be “Gods” of second chances and re-elect him as flag bearer come January 31, 2026? In seven months, the delegates will make that decision.

NPP primary delegates

Let’s refresh our memories with the party’s historical record on selecting flag bearers for presidential elections. In 1992, their candidate (late Prof. Albert Adu Boahen) lost the election.

In the presidential primaries for the 1996 election, although the late Prof. Adu Boahen contested, he lost to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

In my book “Notes from the Public Square: What Ghanaians Said and How They Felt About Kufuor’s Presidency”, I asked the former president about his experiences with primaries.

His essential point, as I understood it, was that primaries differ and the questions driving the internal contest that led to his loss in the 1992 primary were different from those that led to his victory as flag bearer for the 1996 and 2000 election.

Mr Kufuor lost the 1996 election but was re-elected flag bearer for the 2000 election which he won.

The party’s next competitive primary was electing a flag bearer for the 2008 election.

They did so by choosing former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who narrowly lost that election.

Party delegates, however, chose him again for two subsequent elections (2012 and 2016). In all three chances given him by the party, he lost twice and won once.

So, on the historical record, NPP primary delegates can be described as “Gods” of second chances as seen in how they treated Mr Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo.

Will precedent be followed?

But being “Gods” of second chances does not necessarily mean party delegates will repeat what happened in the case of Mr Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo.

In my estimation, there are three key things that I believe will play a role in shaping the decision of the delegates keeping in mind that the party has one singular goal — to return to power.

First, the slate of candidates in the race. Given the singular goal of winning and returning to power, delegates must confront this question “who is best positioned to help the party win the 2028 election?”

And here, the political pedigree of the candidates and their broad appeal beyond the party must be weighed carefully.

The base of the party alone is not enough to win any presidential candidate the general election. Mr Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo never stopped making the argument that despite their losses, they were still the best candidates to lead the party to victory. And that is what Dr Bawumia must never stop doing.

Second, is the answer to the question: Why did the party lose the 2024 election?

If delegates believe the candidate was the main reason, then the prospect of a second chance dwindles.

If they believe it was other factors other than the candidate, then the prospect brightens.

On this point, I am of firm conviction that the nature of the political winds blowing in 2024 was such that no candidate could have won the election for the NPP.

Check Ghanaian sentiments expressed in Afrobarometer Round 9(2022) and 10 (2024) and you will appreciate why I make this assertion.

Third, is the lifespan of the political liability of the party’s record in office that led to the 2024 loss.

If that record has a short lifespan and becomes less potent as time passes, then the prospect of a second chance brightens

It lightens the burden of dealing with being “tainted” by the record.

Alternatively, if that record has a long lifespan and continues to remain potent and easily weaponised even in an intraparty contest, then a second chance dims.

In the end, only one candidate will emerge as the winner.

The primary, undoubtedly, promises to be intensely competitive.

So, I ask again – will the party delegates be “Gods” of second chances?
