Breaking: President Mahama requests clemency for affected radio stations

0

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology
and Innovation to liaise with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore
the broadcast of sixty-four (64) radio stations affected by the regulator’s action.

The President believes that regulatory compliance must take into account the need to uphold and enhance media freedom, and that requiring radio stations to shut down while awaiting the regularisation of their authorisation could limit the space for expressing such freedoms.

The President has asked the Minister to work with the NCA on a reasonable timeframe within which the affected stations should regularise their authorisation.

Six persons busted over alleged fake one million dollars discharged

By Joyce Danso

Accra, June 12, GNA- Six persons who were busted and arraigned over alleged fake one million dollars at Abokobi, have been discharged by an Accra Circuit Court.

The trial Judge, Mrs Susan Eduful, discharged the accused because the court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

The accused are Abdel Razak Djidonou, a 44 -year-old Consultant, Simon Mbillam, a property agent, Mohammed Ibrahim, a 62-year-old contractor, Prince Pius, a 44-year-old businessman, George Bonsu, a 64-year-old driver and Chief Toni Silas, a 53-year-old businessman.

One Dr Jamal, another suspect, is at large.

The accused charged with conspiracy to commit crime and forgery, uttering or possession of forged notes had their pleas preserved because investigations were ongoing.

Accused persons’ counsel, Mr Andrew Vortia, prayed for bail for the accused persons after recounting to the court how his clients had been subjected to facial and body injuries.

The facts before the court are that complainant is a Ukrainian businessman.

On June 8, 2025, the Police received information that some National Security Operatives had arrested the accused persons for possessing one green trunk and a “Ghana must go” bag with forged dollars.

The accused persons were handed over to the Police together with the exhibits (forged dollar notes).

During investigations, it was found out that the accused persons conspired and lured the complainant from Germany to Ghana under the pretext of offering the forged dollar notes which they claimed amounted to one million dollars for the complainant to airlift to Austria for investment.

The accused persons are alleged to have charged and received payment of $10,000 as “appointment fee” from the complainant.

After receiving the money, the accused persons convened a meeting at their warehouse at Abokobi with the complainant.

Luck eluded them when the National Security Operatives arrested them.

People insulted my mum because I chose music over medicine – Richie Mensah

CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah

CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah, has disclosed that his decision to pursue a career in music instead of medicine led to backlash, not just for him, but for his mother as well.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime on June 10, 2025, Richie stated that many people were shocked by his career choice, as they had expected him to follow a more traditional path into medicine.

“When I started my journey, I was 17, and a lot of people said I was too young. After I completed senior high school, I had a conversation with my mum and told her I wanted to do music. It was a bit shocking because everyone expected me to go to medical school,” he recalled.

Richie explained that he initially planned to explore music during a one-year interval after high school. He said that brief plan, however, evolved into a full-blown career.

“I told my mum I was going to see what I could do within that one year. During that time, I opened a studio, and she saw what was happening, and that led to everything you see today,” he said.

Despite his progress, Richie noted that his mother was heavily criticised for supporting his dreams.

“So many people insulted her. They said she was allowing her son to waste his intelligence and future. They insisted I should pursue medicine instead of music,” he revealed.

Richie also recalled being underestimated when he first released his music, with critics calling him “too young” to succeed.

“Even when I released music, people kept saying, ‘he is a small boy.’ But after I succeeded, I released a song to remind people not to let others limit their dreams. Don’t look at my age and think I can’t achieve great things,” he said.

He concluded by referencing his track ‘Yaaro’, explaining that the title, which means “small boy” in Hausa, was a statement to prove that age should never define one’s potential.

Blame GRNMA for delay in the implementation of conditions of service – Dr Smith-Graham

The CEO of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr George Smith-Graham The CEO of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr George Smith-Graham

The Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr George Smith-Graham, has blamed the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) for the delay in implementing their conditions of service.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on June 12, 2025, Dr Smith-Graham said the leadership of GRNMA failed to engage in negotiations with the Commission before embarking on the industrial action.

According to him, the group had placed a court injunction on the implementation of the conditions of service they had negotiated, hence stalling the progress.

“They have not met with me for any negotiations. They must do it while working, not when they are on strike. Before God and man, the fault squarely lies with them. They went to court on their own and placed an injunction on the conditions of service they had negotiated for,” he said.

Dr Smith-Graham noted that the legal action, which he described as a result of internal misunderstandings within the GRNMA, prevented teaching hospitals from making financial budget for the new conditions of service.

“The reality is that not a single teaching hospital had a budget for the conditions of service because of the injunctions,” he stated.

He added that the situation has placed undue pressure on the government.

“If all these had gone through, the government would have had the space and peace of mind to do its work,” he said.

The Head of Trade and Working Capital at Absa Bank Ghana, Emmanuel Mensah, has expressed disappointment with what he described as Ghana’s slow response to the ongoing US-China trade war.

Speaking at the Citi Business Forum, he emphasised the need for urgent reforms in monitoring and responding to global economic trends.

Mensah noted that Ghana lacks a coherent and timely strategy to address the far-reaching implications of escalating global trade tensions, which could impact the country’s economic recovery.

‘We have had such tensions in the past, but as a country, we are too late in time in strategising and trying to navigate this maze of geopolitics,” he stated.

He called for a more proactive approach to navigating these challenges and developing effective strategies to mitigate potential risks and capitalise on opportunities.

Mensah further pointed out the need for Ghana to develop a coherent and timely strategy to address the implications of the trade war.

The country’s slow response has since raised concerns about its ability to navigate the complex global economic landscape and capitalise on opportunities arising from the trade tensions.

Prophet Kumchacha Urges Increase in Mahama’s GH¢1 Fuel Levy, Says It’s “Too Low”

0

The founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Nicholas Osei—popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha—has thrown his support behind former President John Mahama’s proposed GH¢1 fuel levy, while surprisingly calling for an even higher rate.

In a video shared on TikTok, the outspoken preacher argued that the GH¢1 per litre levy was insufficient, suggesting that Mahama could have proposed GH¢2 instead to better tackle Ghana’s ongoing energy crisis.

My second visit to the World Health Assembly in 25 Years left me hopeful — Here’s Why”

0

You need deep roots, not deep pockets, to stand firm. This truth defined this year’s World Health Assembly, where the focus shifted from grand posturing to real change: ownership, inclusion and trust.

In a world of spectacle, that quiet honesty made the World Health Assembly historic.

The truth was clear: the era of ever- expanding global health budgets is over. Even the WHO cut evening sessions to save money. But this wasn’t an Assembly of despair – it was one of reinvention.

I attended the World Health Assembly – my second in 25 years – with a conviction: Africa is not too poor to deliver health care. What it needs are deep roots – ownership, inclusion & trust.

By ownership, I mean leadership and political commitment. Inclusion ensures no one is left out. And trust is built through credible partnerships to deliver on promises. This belief echoed through the sessions.

There was criticism. Some predictable, others profound. The US Health Secretary, in a recorded message, called the WHO outdated and proposed a new framework. U.S. abstained from the first pandemic agreement, backed by 124 nations.

The voices for change came from within. Do we need so many global health agencies? Can the WHO become smaller and leaner, as Thailand’s Suwit Wibulpolprasert asked? Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark called it a moment for reinvention.

That spirit turned into action. China pledged $500 million – now the WHO’s top state donor. Angola’s $8 million pledge signaled that Africa is stepping up. Novo Nordisk Foundation, CIFF, Nippon Foundation, Switzerland, Sweden, Qatar, and others added over $170 million.

The tone had changed: less posturing, more pragmatism.

Innovation and data are no longer buzzwords. They’re seen as vital tools for all countries – rich and poor – to guide investment, improve quality & rebuild trust.

Ghana, Egypt and Rwanda, among others, showcased health insurance schemes rooted in sovereignty, not dependency.

Pharma and big firms showed up in smaller forums that they once ignored – not to market products, but to discuss sustainability and trust.

NCDs – now causing 74% of global deaths – got deserved attention. HIV pooled procurement has cut ARV prices from $10,400 to $40. Could the same be done to make insulin and hypertensive medicines affordable?

Malaria, TB, maternal health and neglected diseases sessions echoed a shared truth. We don’t suffer from ignorance, but from the failure to deliver what we already know.

The workforce crisis was reframed. It’s not just a migration issue. It’s about systems that fail to absorb and empower talent. Wasted capacity is a policy failure.

The cracks in global health are visible – but they’re also seen as entry points for real reforms.

I left Geneva with hope, not hype.

Money is tight. But the resolve for impact felt real.

A number of former appointees and officeholders of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government are under investigation by law enforcement agencies in the country.

Some investigations have led to ongoing criminal trials while others have resulted in formal invitations for questioning, covering various cases from the previous government and past ministries.

From investigations conducted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to those led by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), it appears that law enforcement agencies are working collaboratively to ensure accountability.

Here are some former appointees who are under investigations and the cases they are being investigated for:

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

The former Minister for Education and Energy personally disclosed that he visited the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to respond to inquiries regarding projects undertaken during his tenure in the previous administration.

He is being scrutinised over decisions and contracts executed across two ministries during the eight-year tenure of the Akufo-Addo administration including the controversial procurement of mathematical sets and other related matters.

Ken Ofori-Atta

The former Minister of Finance is under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for five cases including revenue assurance contracts between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) concerning petroleum and mineral revenue oversight.

He is also under investigation for the National Cathedral project, ambulance procurements, the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), and the GRA Tax P-Fund management, which examines the handling and distribution of funds from the Tax P-Fund Account managed by the GRA.

Chairman Wontumi

According to Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is under investigation for multiple criminal offenses including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

He is also implicated in a second strand of investigation linked to a broader international organised crime scheme.

Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi

The former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) is standing trial for the controversial Skytrain project.

He is facing charges of willfully causing financial loss to the state, intentional dissipation of public funds, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Solomon Asamoah

Just like Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, Solomon Asamoah, former CEO of GIIF, is also standing trial for the controversial Skytrain project.

He is facing charges of willfully causing financial loss to the state, intentional dissipation of public funds, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Kwaku Ohene Gyan

Former Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the National Service Authority (NSA), Kwaku Ohene Gyan, also known as Osonoba, was detained by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on February 22, 2025.

His arrest was linked to investigations into the NSA scandal which involves allegations of ghost names being fraudulently added to the payroll.

Gifty Oware Mensah

Also, a former Deputy Director of the National Service Authority, Gifty Oware-Mensah, was detained by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB).

According to reports, she was taken into custody on Friday, March 7, 2025, and has since been denied bail.

The maiden edition of the Ghana Kidz Fashion Festival 2025 dazzled audiences and left a lasting impression, as young models lit up the runway with confidence, charm, and creativity.

Held at the Karma Conference Centre in Accra, the event brought together fashion enthusiasts, families, and industry players to celebrate the vibrant potential of Ghana’s next generation of fashion icons.

The audiences were thrilled by the children’s captivating catwalks, which featured stunning designs that showcased both contemporary flair and cultural heritage. The runway came alive with contributions from top Ghanaian designers including Nallem Clothing, Allan David, and a host of promising young designers who introduced fresh perspectives to kids’ fashion.

The show was further energised by musical performances from young sensations Fotocopy and SweetStar, as well as engaging dance performances that kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening.

Organisers Brein Consult and Exopa Modelling Agency expressed their delight with the overwhelming turnout and the positive reception of the event.

“We are very satisfied with the show. The kids did incredibly well, and the designs were outstanding,” organisers said in a press statement.

The Ghana Kidz Fashion Festival is more than a fashion show—it’s a platform dedicated to empowering child models and emerging designers. By promoting Ghana’s unique cultural fashion styles, the festival offers young creatives a rare opportunity to shine in the national spotlight.

We waste human resource and over-politicise the system – Adu-Gyamfi

0

Professor of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Prof. Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, has expressed concern over Ghana’s continued underutilisation of its most experienced professionals due to poor leadership and excessive politicisation.

Speaking on on JoyNews, Prof. Adu-Gyamfi lamented that despite decades of training skilled professionals, the country still relies heavily on foreign contractors, sidelining competent Ghanaians.

“So in that regard, we haven’t done too well. We tend to waste human resources. At Independence, we had less than a thousand doctors. But beyond that, how many engineers or top-tier teachers did we have? We weren’t thinking beyond the civil service as the only employer, and we were quick to push people out through the pension system,” he said.

He criticised the current retirement policy, arguing that it forces capable professionals out of service when they could still contribute meaningfully to national development.

“Take a civil engineer or an architect—these are professions where experience improves performance. Yet at 60, we tell them to go. I don’t mind retirement per se, but the system should be structured to retain their services in a different capacity so they can continue delivering.”

Prof. Adu-Gyamfi also expressed frustration over Ghana’s reliance on foreign contractors for major infrastructure projects.

“Up till now, we still bring in foreign companies to build our roads and coastal defences, despite having institutions like KNUST and Legon for decades. Our coastline is eroding, and we still look outside for help.”

Citing an example from his experience abroad, he said: “Look at Amsterdam—it’s below sea level and was reclaimed 300–400 years ago. At that time, they didn’t have today’s technology, yet they found a way. Meanwhile, with all the granite and resources we have here, our engineers aren’t being empowered to do the same.”

He believes the solution lies in leadership reform and a shift in how institutional knowledge is valued.

“It’s all about leadership and management. When experienced professionals retire, we discard them along with their accumulated knowledge. That’s a huge loss. We should re-engineer the system to retain and harness their expertise.”

He also condemned the politicisation of public service, saying political bias often leads to capable individuals being removed from key positions.

“This over-politicisation is damaging. If you’re from a different political party, even if you’re competent, you’re removed. That’s wrong. People with valuable ideas and vision should be allowed to stay and contribute.”

Prof. Adu-Gyamfi concluded by calling for urgent reforms to Ghana’s leadership structure, institutional systems, and political culture to fully tap into the country’s human resource potential.

Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025: Agriculture key to Ghana’s development – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that Ghana’s development hinges on building a “productive economy”, with horticulture playing a central role in that vision.

Speaking at the official opening of the Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre on June 11, 2025, President Mahama called for a paradigm shift in the agricultural sector, urging bold investments, innovative thinking, and strategic partnerships.

“Our goal is not just food security but economic security through agriculture… seek ye first the productive economy. Let us grow Ghana one fruit, one field, and one future at a time.”

The president outlined a comprehensive plan to revitalise the horticulture sector, beginning with the renewal of the Feed Ghana initiative, which will run from 2025 to 2028.

The programme includes targeted interventions such as the ‘Yeridua’ (We Are Planting) Vegetable Development Project, Smart Agriculture and Farmer Support Centres, and Agribusiness Youth Clinics to support young agripreneurs with skills training, funding, and mentorship.

He emphasised the moral and economic urgency of the reforms, describing the struggles of farmers as not only technical challenges but also national ethical concerns.

“Can a nation prosper if the very hands that feed it remain its most neglected?” he asked.

The expo, themed “Innovate, Transform, Sustain: Driving Growth in Ghana’s Horticultural Sector”, brought together key stakeholders from across Africa, including government officials, exporters, financial institutions, and agribusiness leaders.

The event aimed to reposition horticulture as a viable engine of economic diversification, job creation, and export growth.

Davis Korboe, President of the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), echoed the president’s call for action, describing the expo as “a grand orchestra of ideas and enterprise”.

He pointed to the untapped potential of Ghana’s agro-ecological resources and challenged stakeholders to act boldly.

“Post-harvest losses still exceed 30%, and yields for crops like mangoes, pineapples, and coconuts remain below global standards,” Korboe said.

“Yet the global horticulture market is projected to reach over $320 billion by 2030. Ghana must claim its share.”

He also highlighted the transformative potential of the 24-Hour Economy policy, describing it as a game-changer for horticulture.

“Imagine cold storage running through the night, agro-processing plants operating in shifts, and exports moving without delay. This is not a fantasy; it’s a vision within reach,” he noted.

Korboe took aim at rigid banking practices, calling on financial institutions to support innovation over collateral.

“Banking must go beyond vaults and spreadsheets. Let’s bank on ideas, nurture businesses, and grow together,” he stated.

Chairperson of the Expo and Executive Chairman of Celltel Networks, Dr Prince Kofi Kludjeson, called for equity reforms to strengthen private sector participation in agriculture.

“We cannot transform Ghana’s economy if farmers remain disadvantaged in ownership and investment,” he said.

He also advocated for local grocery franchises and smart agriculture systems to meet domestic and international demands.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) announced a new Youth in Export Programme, aimed at engaging young people in export-led horticulture, particularly in underserved communities.

“The horticultural sector holds immense promise for us as a key driver of economic diversification, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings.

“The Ghana Export Promotion Authority is working in collaboration with the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters and other stakeholders to roll out the Youth in Export Programme, targeting young people in communities across the country.”

Kwaku Boateng, the Vice President of the Coconut Federation Ghana, called for collaboration between the government and stakeholders to drive the developmental agenda in the agricultural sector.

KIA to get a modern air traffic control tower KIA to get a modern air traffic control tower

The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur, has noted that ongoing projects at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) will soon be completed.

According to him, the government is putting measures in place to uplift the status of the airport to a business and air traffic centre in West Africa.

He noted that these measures include the construction of a modern air traffic control tower centre.

“The construction of the modern air traffic control tower centre will transform our airspace management systems, boosting radar surveillance, communication efficiency, and safety protocols. All these projects are very much on course,” he said.

He added that the project will be completed by the end of 2025.

“It is expected that by the end of next year, the modern air traffic control centre will be completed. The forthcoming implementation, I must say, (sic) is more than 80% complete. The infrastructural part of it is 100% complete,” he was quoted in a report by myjoyonline.com on June 12, 2025.

Rev Wilfred said the GCAA is also working to broaden its data system to coordinate and harmonise flight activities at the airport.

According to him, the advanced passenger information system will improve security by receiving all passenger data at a central point to be analysed by the state security agencies when needed.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) will then be able to identify persons entering Ghana’s airspace before they land at any airport in the country.

“What exactly am I referring to? I am referring to the advanced passenger information system and the passenger name record system that is long overdue to be implemented in Ghana,” he said.

Black Queens drop to 66th in FIFA rankings, fall to 6th in Africa

Payers of the Black Queens before a game Payers of the Black Queens before a game

Ghana’s national women’s team, the Black Queens, have dropped one place in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings released on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

The team has moved from 65th to 66th position globally, and from 5th to 6th on the African continent.

This decline follows a mixed run of results under new head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, who took over in February 2025.

Since the last rankings update in March, the Black Queens have played four matches, winning just once in a friendly against Senegal.

They drew one game and lost two, including a recent 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast after a 3-3 draw in the first leg of their double-header.

The recent fixtures formed part of Ghana’s preparations for the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to begin in July 2025.

The team has struggled to find consistency under Bjorkegren, recording only one win in their last five outings.

As the Black Queens prepare for WAFCON, they will face tough opposition in Group C, which includes defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

With rankings and form both dipping, Ghana will need to step up in the tournament to regain momentum and climb back up the ladder.

“Supreme Court ‘Not Above the Constitution’ – Prof Prempeh on Mahama’s Third Term Speculation

0

According to a report by Ghana Web, The Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, Prof H Kwasi Prempeh, has strongly refuted claims by former NPP Chairman, Freddie Blay, suggesting that the Supreme Court could permit President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term in office.

During an interview on Oyerepa FM on June 11, 2025, Blay suggested that the judiciary could interpret the constitution in a manner that allows Mahama another presidential run.

He argued, “The law is in the bosom of the judges,” indicating that the Supreme Court holds the power to provide such interpretations. Blay emphasized that ultimately, the citizens decide who becomes president, not the courts.

Responding to these comments on Facebook, Prof Prempeh categorically dismissed the notion as legally unsound.

He stressed that Article 66(1) of the 1992 Constitution is explicit on presidential term limits and leaves no room for alternative interpretations that would enable a third term. In his words, “Two terms mean two terms!”

Prempeh argued that the constitution’s framers were deliberate in their wording and, had they intended to allow non-consecutive third terms, they would have stated so explicitly, as seen in provisions concerning District Chief Executives.

He maintained that the judiciary lacks the authority to alter or reinterpret the constitution’s clear language.

Prof Prempeh, who also serves as Executive Director of the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), called for an end to the debate, stating, “The Supreme Court is not omnipotent or above the constitution.”

The statement by the NCA indicated that out of 62 media houses that were shut down, 28 were found to be operating with expired authorisations, while 14 received authorisation but failed to set up operations within two years, breaching the regulatory timelines.

Thirteen (13) are operating under provisional authorisation, despite having paid the required fees.

The remaining seven (7) stations paid provisional fees, but final authorisation is pending due to non-fulfilment of requirements under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations.

Asaase Radio, Wontumi FM shut down for regulatory violations

0

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the immediate suspension of operations by more than 60 FM broadcasting stations across the country, including prominent outlets such as Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM, over multiple regulatory breaches.

The enforcement action targets stations found to be operating with expired authorisations, unpaid licence fees, or failure to meet set-up conditions stipulated under the Electronic Communications Act and its accompanying regulations.

A recent audit by the NCA—backed by a ministerial directive—revealed widespread non-compliance, prompting the crackdown aimed at restoring order and adherence to broadcasting standards.

Checks by Citi News indicate that Asaase Radio, which broadcasts on 99.5 FM, is currently off air.

Out of the 62 affected stations:

  • 28 were found to be operating with expired authorisations.

  • 14 received authorisation but failed to set up operations within two years, breaching regulatory timelines.

  • 13 are operating under provisional authorisation, despite having paid the required fees.

  • 7 stations paid provisional fees, but final authorisation is pending due to non-fulfilment of requirements under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations.

The NCA reiterated that all broadcasters must comply fully with licensing obligations to remain operational and assured the public that the authority will continue its monitoring and enforcement efforts.

Mahama pardons 62 radio stations sanctioned by NCA

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called for the immediate restoration of broadcast services to 62 radio stations shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for regulatory breaches.

In a directive to the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, President Mahama requested a collaboration between the ministry and the NCA to ensure the affected stations resume broadcasting without delay.

This was contained in a release by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, today, a few hours after the NCA shut down the stations.

The statement explained that President Mahama believes in the importance of balancing regulatory compliance with media freedom.

Hence, “requiring radio stations to shut down while awaiting the regularisation of their authorisation could limit the space for expressing such freedoms.”

The release stressed that media outlets play a vital role in democratic societies and should be supported in fulfilling that role.

To that end, the President has also directed the Minister to engage the NCA in setting “a reasonable timeframe within which the affected stations should regularise their authorisation”.

The affected stations include Happy FM, Asaase Radio, and Wontumi FM, all based in Accra.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 12, the NCA said the enforcement action targets stations that have failed to comply with key provisions of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), specifically Regulations 54 and 56, as well as the terms and conditions attached to their broadcasting authorisations.

The crackdown followed a directive from the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, instructing the NCA to apply appropriate sanctions after a recent audit revealed widespread non-compliance within the FM broadcasting sector.

According to the NCA, the enforcement is being rolled out in phases, beginning with stations identified in the Frequency Audit Report. The infractions identified in the first phase include:

  1. Twenty-eight (28) FM stations operating with expired authorisations, despite prior orders issued in 2024 to cease broadcasting. These stations remain on air in violation of Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).
  2. Fourteen (14) FM stations that were issued Notices of Revocation for failing to commence operations within two years of receiving authorisation. Although they have since requested inspections, various lapses have stalled the process — yet these stations continue to broadcast, contravening Regulation 54.
  3. Thirteen (13) FM stations with Provisional Authorisations who have not settled the requisite fees in full, and therefore lack valid authorisations to operate. This again breaches Section 2(4) of Act 775.
  4. Seven (7) FM stations that have paid provisional fees but have not yet been issued final authorisations due to non-fulfilment of Regulation 54 requirements.

‘You possess the qualities every man would settle for’ – Reggie Zippy flaunts new fiancée

Popular UK-based Ghanaian musician, Reggie Zippy, has taken to social media to rain praises on his new fiancée after previously lamenting about the struggles he faced in his past marriage.

This development took place while Reggie Zippy shared new photos of his current partner on social media, expressing admiration for her.

“It is not a woman’s skin colour, nor just her beauty or appearance, that captivates and keeps a good man’s heart and attention. Every good and responsible man knows how to love, treat, and adore the woman who stands by him in his loneliest and darkest times, and this beautiful girl right here is an epitome of such qualities,” he wrote.

He further noted, “Some women only desire already-made men with fully furnished businesses, bank accounts, and affluent lifestyles, whereas a select few have the ability to love, respect, and support great men with broken wings until they begin to fly and soar to higher levels again.”

Reggie Zippy, who is still in the bad books of some netizens for moving on quickly after his divorce, also addressed critics who frequently criticise him whenever he shares pictures or videos of his new girlfriend.

“For the few bitter and backward people who write all sorts of nonsense whenever I post pictures or videos of me and my beautiful, sexy, and gorgeous girlfriend, y’all need to brace up for impact. This woman has been my angel on earth for the past three years, and I don’t care what any of you negative-minded folks think,” he added.

Reggie and his ex-wife, Edith Ward, engaged in a series of public back-and-forths online after news of their divorce went viral.

However, in December 2024, he shared joyful photos with his ex-wife and children, updating fans on their co-parenting journey.

Everyone was pleased to see them reconcile, but their co-parenting arrangement later fell apart once again.

Police tortured Ataa Ayi to frame innocent mechanic – Lawyer

0

George Bernard Shaw, lawyer for Yaw Asante Agyekum George Bernard Shaw, lawyer for Yaw Asante Agyekum

The lawyer for Yaw Asante Agyekum, a mechanic recently acquitted after serving 23 years in prison, has alleged that the police tortured notorious armed robber, Ataa Ayi, and another accused person to extract false confessions to implicate his client.

According to George Bernard Shaw, counsel for Agyekum, the coerced confessions formed the basis for his client’s conviction in 2010, for conspiracy to commit murder and involvement in a robbery syndicate led by Ataa Ayi.

Agyekum was sentenced to 35 years after being linked to the gang, while Ataa Ayi was handed a 160-year sentence for a series of robberies that terrorised residents in Accra in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

However, on June 5, 2025, the Court of Appeal overturned Agyekum’s conviction, citing insufficient evidence and lack of legal representation during his trial.

According to citinewsroom.com report on June 11, 2025, Shaw said that the police used brutal methods during interrogations to force confessions from Ataa Ayi and the first accused, Nana Owusu, which led to the wrongful implication of Agyekum.

“He (Yaw Agyekum) denied everything. He told the police he had nothing to do with the robberies. All he knew was that Ataa Ayi occasionally brought bikes to him for repairs,” Shaw said.

The lawyer maintained that Agyekum had only limited ties to Ataa Ayi through mutual acquaintances.

He further revealed that his client actually assisted the police in tracking down both Owusu and Ataa Ayi, a fact that was allegedly overlooked during the investigation and prosecution.

The Court of Appeal presided over by Justices Aboagye Tanoh, Stephen Oppong, and Janapare Bartels Kodwo, concluded that the prosecution failed to establish a credible connection between Agyekum and the crimes.

The panel also highlighted serious procedural flaws, including Agyekum’s lack of legal representation during his trial.

Shaw described the ruling as a major vindication for his client and a stark reminder of systemic issues within Ghana’s criminal justice system.

Agyekum was originally arrested in 2002 and spent 23 years behind bars before his eventual release.

Agricultural initiatives delayed by slow implementation

Professor Irene Egyir is the Dean of the School of Agriculture at the University of Ghana Professor Irene Egyir is the Dean of the School of Agriculture at the University of Ghana

A renowned Agriculture Economist and Dean of the School of Agriculture at the University of Ghana, Professor Irene Egyir, has expressed disappointment with the slow pace of implementation of government agricultural initiatives.

Speaking in an interview as monitored by GhanaWeb Business, Egyir acknowledged the good intentions behind these initiatives but criticised the lack of timely execution, which she believes is crucial in agriculture.

“Timing is crucial in agriculture, especially when we depend heavily on rainfall patterns. When inputs arrive late, farmers lose the opportunity to plant at the right time, which ultimately affects productivity and food security,” she said.

She pointed out the challenges farmers face in accessing government agricultural support programs.

She also noted that even farmers with their own resources who want to participate in community farming initiatives struggle to benefit from these programs due to administrative barriers.

“We have farmers who are willing to invest their own money, but they cannot access the support they need because of cumbersome processes,” she stated.

She urged the government to simplify and streamline agricultural support

programs, making them more accessible to farmers across the country.

“If we can make these programs farmer-friendly, we can boost productivity, reduce food imports, and ultimately improve food security,” she advised.

Her call comes at a time when food inflation remains a pressing concern, despite efforts to sustain Ghana’s current disinflation path.

By addressing the challenges in agricultural support programs, she believes that the country can make significant strides in improving agricultural productivity and reducing its reliance on food imports.

Thomas Tuchel chides Bellingham for ‘repulsive behavior’ after England’s loss to Senegal

0

Jude Bellingham (in white jersey) has been cautioned about his behaviour Jude Bellingham (in white jersey) has been cautioned about his behaviour

England manager Thomas Tuchel has admonished Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham to act appropriately in matches, regardless of the results.

Bellingham had his equaliser in England’s 3-1 friendly defeat by Senegal on June 10, 2025, overturned by the Video Assistant Referee after a Levi Colwill handball in the build-up.

After the game, Bellingham kicked the ball away and made a beeline for one of the officials before kicking a drinks cooler in frustration, only for England captain Harry Kane to usher him away and back onto the pitch.

During the post-match press conference, Tuchel expressed his disappointment with the former Dortmund midfielder’s actions, saying that his mother sometimes finds his attitude “repulsive” as he urged the Real Madrid playmaker to channel his “edge” towards the opposition rather than intimidating his teammates.

He advised the midfielder to invest his energy in matches but not to intimidate his opponents, acknowledging that he is a special talent.

“I think he brings an edge which we welcome and is needed if we want to achieve big things. It needs to be channeled towards the opponent and towards our goal, not to intimidate teammates or be over-aggressive towards teammates and officials, but always towards the solution, towards winning.

“He has the fire, and I don’t want to dim it down. He should play with this kind of fire, but the fire comes with some attributes that can intimidate you, maybe even as a teammate. If he smiles, he wins everyone as he is a special talent. But sometimes you see the rage, the hunger, and the fire, and it comes out in a way that can be a bit repulsive, for example, for my mother when she sits in front of the TV,” the former Chelsea boss remarked.

Manchester City Sign AC Milan Star Tijjani Reijnders In £46.5m Deal

0

Tijjani Reijnders

MANCHESTER CITY have completed the signing of Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for an initial fee of £46.5 million on a five-year deal, as Pep Guardiola reinforces his squad ahead of the expanded Club World Cup in the United States.

The 26-year-old becomes City’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Rayan Aït-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, and Rayan Cherki. Reijnders is eligible for City’s Club World Cup opener against Moroccan side Wydad AC on 18 June in Philadelphia.

“City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities,” said Reijnders. “Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles and I want to help keep that going.”

With Kevin De Bruyne’s departure, the Netherlands international — who was named Serie A Midfielder of the Season after scoring 15 goals in 54 games — is expected to play a key role in Guardiola’s midfield rebuild.

Despite interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, City opted for Reijnders, Cherki and Aït-Nouri for a combined fee of around £108 million, considerably less than Wirtz’s reported £127m valuation.

Reijnders, capped 22 times by the Netherlands, adds dynamism and physicality to a midfield that struggled with injuries and form last season. His arrival signals a potential reshuffle, with players like Kalvin Phillips, James McAtee, and Jack Grealish all reportedly available for transfer.

Senior Management of Ghana EXIM Bank donates GHS450k to ‘Mahama Cares’ programme

0

The senior management team of the Ghana EXIM Bank has donated four hundred and fifty thousand Ghana cedis (GHS450,000) to the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund also known as ‘MahamaCares’.

The donation which was the voluntary contribution of management staff of the bank, is the first instalment of the total sum intended for the Fund.

The Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund is a government initiative to complement the efforts of the National Health Insurance Scheme which provides financial access to healthcare for residents of the country.

The MahamaCares program, however, is designed to support specialist-level treatment for a wide range of chronic illnesses, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke, among other conditions.

Chief Executive, Sylvester Mensah who led the gesture indicated that “the Mahamacares program is a compassionate effort geared towards expanding access to healthcare, and I am proud of the empathy shown by the senior management team here at EXIM.”

Mr Mensah who is a former Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) was optimistic that the support will add to the national effort aimed at providing medical relief to vulnerable citizens battling critical health conditions.

The Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund initiative was launched by the President, John Mahama in April this year. At the launch, the President underscored the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring that every Ghanaian, regardless of income or location, has access to essential healthcare.

He called on corporate Ghana and individuals to support the Trust Fund.

It is in response to this call that the senior team at EXIM made the contribution.

The President led the way by donating six months of his salary to the fund. Vice President, Professor Opoku-Agyeman also donated four months of her salary to the program. Various individuals and organisations have since made contributions to help advance the objective of the Trust Fund. Notable among the donors were the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) service commanders who contributed their one-month salary.

According to the WHO, cardiovascular diseases account for 90% of these cases, while cancers account for 5%. Many of these deaths could be prevented if people had access to treatment, but the high cost makes it impossible for many.

It is persons in this bracket that the Mahamacares program seeks to support. A task force has been inaugurated by the Ministry of Health to roll-out the program.

‘At a point in my acting career, the scripts weren’t coming’ – Jeffery Nortey

Ghanaian actor and content creator, Jeffery Nortey, has opened up about how he ventured into comedy skits and built his personal brand.

In an interview on Daybreak Hitz with Doreen Avio on June 12, 2025, Jeffery revealed that there was a point in his acting career when scripts simply stopped coming in, for various reasons.

“At a point in my acting career, the scripts weren’t coming. I was told I didn’t suit the roles. I looked too young. I couldn’t play the boyfriend role to Jackie [Appiah] or whoever was on top at the time,” he shared.

Despite the setbacks, Jeffery Nortey said his passion for acting never faded. Driven by the love for the craft rather than money, he said he decided to take matters into his own hands.

“I really wanted to act, so I decided to put one or two things together and create short films. When I put them out there, people started calling them ‘skits.’ They thought it was funny, but honestly, I didn’t think it was funny. Even now, I don’t think I’m funny,” he said.

According to Jeffery, the short films ended up giving him the exposure he needed.

He said, although people saw them as humorous, he was simply trying to portray real-life experiences through acting.

“People say I make them laugh, but I’m actually acting. I’m showing real-life situations, and if you find that funny, that’s fine. It’s subjective. I’m just happy I’m making you laugh, because truthfully, I could just as easily make you cry,” he said.

As the audience grew and the feedback became more encouraging, Jeffery said he leaned into the new creative path.

“People loved the quality and kept motivating me to do more. I realised it was giving me exposure, so I kept going. Then I figured out I could monetize it. And here we are,” he stated.

The Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has confirmed media reports regarding the closure of one of his media stations, Asaase Radio 99.5.

Reacting to the closure on his X page on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart stated that the shutdown by the National Communications Authority (NCA) was due to delay in the renewal of its licenses in 2024, which permit the station to legally operate in the country.

According to him, the broadcasting station’s license was renewed in December 2024, although it was originally due for renewal in October of the same year.

“Yes, it’s true. Asaase Radio 99.5, which celebrates its 5th anniversary on Saturday, has been shut down. The General Manager informs me it’s because the station delayed in renewing its licence last year. It was to be renewed by October but only done in December 2024,” the politician posted.

The closure follows the NCA’s directive ordering the immediate suspension of operations for more than 60 FM broadcasting stations across the country.

The statement by the NCA on Thursday, June 12, 2025, indicated that out of 62 media houses that were shut down, 28 were found to be operating with expired authorisations, while 14 received authorisation but failed to set up operations within two years, breaching regulatory timelines.

Thirteen (13) stations were also said to be operating under provisional authorisation, despite having paid the required fees.

The remaining seven (7) stations paid provisional fees, but final authorisation is pending due to non-fulfilment of requirements under the Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations.

Collateral Registry fuels 31% annual growth in secured lending

0

Ghana’s Collateral Registry is quietly transforming access to credit, recording an average annual growth of 31.5% in security-interest filings over the past 15 years.

Since launching in 2010, registrations on the digital platform have surged from just over 10,000 to 382,215 as of 2024, according to Fred Asiama Koranteng, Head of the Registry.

In total, lenders have filed over 1.4 million claims against movable and immovable assets—ranging from vehicles and equipment to inventory—enabling real-time verification and unlocking financing for businesses without formal land titles.

“This is not just a statistic—it’s a story of empowerment, economic opportunity, and a better future,” Mr. Koranteng said, adding that the platform now logs about 9,000 new filings each week.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Ernest Addison, Deputy Bank of Ghana Governor Zakari Mumuni traced the registry’s origins to the 2008 Borrowers and Lenders Act, which was overhauled in 2020 to align Ghana’s secured-transactions regime with international standards. Prior to the reforms, banks relied almost exclusively on land or buildings as collateral—a constraint that stifled SME borrowing and amplified credit risk.

“Today, lenders can verify within minutes whether a vehicle, machine, or shipment of inventory is already pledged, sharply reducing information asymmetry that once inflated loan defaults and discouraged lending,” Dr. Mumuni said.

He noted that over 4,450 “memoranda of no objection” have been issued to date, allowing lenders to enforce claims without resorting to drawn-out legal proceedings.

The registry’s rise has paralleled a rebound in private-sector lending. Bank of Ghana data show gross credit to businesses rose nearly 18 percent in 2024, despite a tight monetary environment that saw the policy rate peak at 28 percent.

The bank expects that technology will accelerate the next phase of growth. The Registry is piloting artificial intelligence to detect duplicate filings, flag potential fraud, and reduce processing delays. It is also integrating databases from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Office of the Registrar of Companies, and the Lands Commission to offer a unified interface for collateral verification.

“The vision ahead is ambitious,” Dr. Mumuni said. “We are investing in advanced technologies to enhance efficiency, security, and user experience.”

Development partners, including the International Finance Corporation and Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, are supporting the initiative to align with global best practices.

Still, challenges persist. Rural financial institutions often lack internet access, hindering use of the online portal. Meanwhile, a backlog of legacy paper-based filings remains undigitized.

Mr. Koranteng said the Registry plans to scale outreach in underserved areas and deepen integration with other public data systems “to build a more inclusive and thriving economy.”

“We’ve moved from collateral as a bottleneck to collateral as an accelerator,” Mr. Koranteng said. “And the data suggests we’re only at the beginning of that shift.”

Real Madrid have officially unveiled Trent Alexander-Arnold as their latest signing after the England international penned a six-year contract with the club.

The 26-year old right-back was presented to the media and fans on Thursday morning, June 12, 2025, at the Santiago Bernabéu.

He will wear the number 12 shirt as La Liga regulations do not permit the number 66 he wore throughout his Liverpool career.

Alexander-Arnold joins Madrid after the Spanish giants reached an agreement with Liverpool to release him early from his contract.

Although he was set to arrive on a free transfer at the end of the month, Madrid opted to pay a reported £10 million fee to secure his participation in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

The defender leaves Liverpool after 20 years at the club, having risen through the academy ranks to become one of the most influential full-backs in world football.

During his time at Anfield, he won nine major trophies including the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League titles in 2020 and 2025.

At the international level, Alexander-Arnold has featured for England in three major tournaments, the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and UEFA Euro 2024.

Real Madrid had long identified Alexander-Arnold as a key target, and his decision not to renew with Liverpool opened the door for the move.

His contract at Madrid runs until June 30, 2031.

He becomes the latest in a line of high-profile players to join Madrid in recent years as the club continues to bolster its squad for domestic and international dominance.

Wobbling, Fumbling Leadership

0

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

One of the qualities of good leadership is an outstanding ability to manage situations under intense pressure.

Our Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has not lived up to expectation as his conduct since the nurses’ strike commenced clearly shows.

His actions and utterances so far in the face of the biting strike show that he and his government could not care a hoot and would rather rubbish the concerns of the striking nurses.

Tema, Takoradi Ports to operate as 24-Hour Ports – Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 12, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Tema and the Takoradi Ports, will soon be operating as 24-Hour Ports when the Government’s 24-Hour Economy is operationalized.

He said the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and the Ministry of Transport were working together with the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Shippers’ Council, and other stakeholders to soon declare the Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour ports.

“It will not only be about working longer hours. It will be about building infrastructure, energy, security, transport, and the digital platforms that enable round-the-clock agro-industrial activity. It is a strategy of hope rooted in efficiency and scale,” he said.

President Mahama made the disclosure when he formally opened the Ghana Horticulture Expo in Accra.

The three-day event on the theme “Innovate, Transform, sustain: Driving Growth in Ghana’s Horticultural Sector,” is being organised by the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE).

President Mahama also announced that on July 1st, the 24-Hour Initiative Policy would be ready to go into operation.

This policy, he said, would provide the framework for continuous production, processing, and logistics in horticulture.

He noted that this allows fresh apple goods like pineapples, mangoes, chilies, and herbs to move swiftly from the field to ports to international shelves, minimizing losses and maximizing value.

He said Expo reflects the advocacy, and the Government’s response was anchored in action and commitment.

President Mahama assured FAGE, that it had his fullest support.

He said as President, he believes that the most urgent, inclusive, and transformative development must begin from the ground, from the farms, the greenhouses, the backyard gardens across Ghana.

“We must engineer an economic renewal that is productive, equitable, and sustainable. Agriculture, especially horticulture, is not an afterthought,” President Mahama said.

“It is central to our vision of national economic transformation and reconstruction.”

He noted that with year-round sunshine, fertile soils, waters, and hardworking farmers, Ghana was already a global leader in yam exports and a growing force in tropical fruits and vegetables, but potential must give way to performance and hope must yield results.

He said they must move from smallholder survival to value addition, international competitiveness, and youth-driven enterprise.

“If you have traveled across this country from Keta to Komenda, from Techiman to Tamale, you will have seen what I have seen.

“That is the silent labor of our farmers, cooperatives, our mothers hunched over tomato beds, and young people innovating with very little support,” President Mahama said.

“Yet many cannot access cold storage or find fair markets, and a single failed season can erase many years of effort. This is not merely a technical challenge. It is a moral imperative.

“And we must ask ourselves; can a nation prosper if the very hands that feed it remain its most neglected? Our answer today through this Expo and our policies is a resounding no.”

He said in line with this renewed commitment, he was pleased to reaffirm the Government’s flagship programme, Feed Ghana, from 2025 to 2028, which operationalizes the broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation agenda.

He said Feed Ghana was a bold response to rural unemployment, food insecurity, and over-dependence on imports.

He said for the agricultural sector, this includes the Vegetable Development Project, which had been christened the “yeredua,” which means ‘we are planting,’ to scale greenhouse cultivation and institutional competitive farming.

The second is Smart Agriculture and Farmer Support Centers to deliver mechanization services to farmers, irrigation, climate smart advisory, and digital extension services.

The third is Agri-Industrial Zones and Cold Chain Infrastructure to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance export readiness.

And the fourth is Agribusiness Youth Clinics to equip the next generation of our young people with the skills, capital, and mentorship for agribusiness success.

The President said these interventions were not promises, they were policy realities designed to make Ghana’s horticultural investment ready, inclusive, and globally competitive.

“We are also implementing a game-changing strategy, the 24-Hour Economy Initiative, to unlock Ghana’s productive potential across all sectors,” he stated.

Dr Prince Kofi Kludjeson, Executive Chairperson of Celltel Networkks Limited, who chaired the occasion, called for leveraging technology in smart farming to optimize various aspects of agriculture as part of efforts to boost efficiency and productivity in Ghana.

Mr Davis Narh Korboe, the President of FAGE, thanked President Mahama for keeping faith with FAGE and working tirelessly to promote the nation’s exports sector.
