‘Why haven’t you charged him if you have evidence?’ – Kwabena Agyepong to OSP

0

L-R: Kwabena Agyepong, Ken Ofori-Atta and Kissi Agyebeng L-R: Kwabena Agyepong, Ken Ofori-Atta and Kissi Agyebeng

A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has strongly criticised Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng for re-declaring former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, as a fugitive from justice.

According to Agyepong, since the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) announced it had begun investigating Ofori-Atta, it has yet to outline any charges it intends to prosecute him for.

As a result, he argued Ofori-Atta cannot be considered an accused person, as no formal charges have been filed against him.

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Agyepong expressed the view that although the Special Prosecutor regards the former minister as a person of interest in a series of cases, this alone does not justify labeling him an accused.

“So, what is wrong with this OSP? Is he conducting a public and media trial of Ken Ofori-Atta? As at now, no charges have been brought against Ken, so he’s not an accused person yet, even if the OSP sees him as a person of interest.

“If the OSP has what he’s claiming he has, why hasn’t he charged Ken with all the assembled facts and evidence and started prosecution in a proper court of law? After all, people have been tried in absentia several times in the past,” he stated.

The politician further argued that the OSP’s decision to re-declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice after he failed to appear on the agreed date, June 2, was unlawful.

He maintained that such a designation can only be made by a court, not by the prosecutor.

He added that the OSP should instead focus on executing its core mandate as a prosecutor by presenting its case against Ofori-Atta before a judge and formally outlining any charges it intends to pursue.

“Does he need the physical presence of Ken before he does his job? Only a court of competent authority can declare someone a fugitive from justice if he refuses to appear before the court. That cannot be the mandate of a prosecutor who should be busying himself trying to prove his case before a judge,” he continued.

He went on to say that if the Special Prosecutor was able to operate outside the country’s jurisdiction after claiming his life was under threat, then he should also be able to adopt the necessary means to reach the former minister.

Agyepong further argued that the OSP’s decision to declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice appeared to be an attempt to save face.

He strongly reiterated his view that the Office of the Special Prosecutor should not have been established, asserting that it has failed to fulfill its mandate and instead has become a financial burden on the state.

“When he claimed his life was under threat, didn’t he find it necessary to operate outside the country at our expense? If he could work outside the country, then he can equally reach Ken. This is clearly a PR stunt to justify himself in an office that should never have been set up in the first place, a worthless drain on our overstretched public purse.

“I think Ken’s legal team should call his bluff. Why should Ken provide him with evidence that can incriminate him in a possible trial? The OSP is not a judge and should be stopped from exceeding his mandate,” he indicated.

In his statement, Kwabena Agyepong emphasised his firm commitment to accountability, acknowledging the importance of holding individuals responsible for any misconduct committed while in government.

However, he added that the law must not be violated in the pursuit of accountability, while condemning the approach used by state security agencies in carrying out these arrests.

“As a patriot of our beloved motherland Ghana, I want all who have misconducted themselves whilst in government to face the full consequences of their actions, but in a lawful way, not the high-handed rambo style invasions being systematically carried out in the name of ongoing investigations. We the people will not condone any moves calculated to further damage our party’s brand on the altar of political expediency period,” he added.

Lovely Chiffon Gown Designs Ladies Can Add to Their Wardrobe

News Hub Creator2h

CChiffon gowns are a timeless addition to any wardrobe because their lightweight, flowing fabric creates an effortlessly elegant look. The delicate drape of chiffon enhances feminine silhouettes, making it a popular choice for formal and semi-formal occasions. Soft pastel shades like blush pink, mint green, and lavender lend a romantic touch, while bold jewel tones such as emerald and sapphire make a striking statement. Floral prints on chiffon gowns add a whimsical charm, perfect for garden parties and spring weddings.

Since chiffon is semi-sheer, designers often layer it over satin or lining to maintain modesty while preserving its ethereal appeal. Ruffled tiers and cascading hemlines create movement, ensuring the gown flows gracefully with every step. Off-shoulder and cold-shoulder designs highlight the collarbones and shoulders, adding a subtle yet sophisticated allure. High-low hemlines offer a playful contrast, allowing for ease of movement while keeping the look elegant. Embellishments like delicate beading, sequins, or lace appliqués elevate chiffon gowns for evening events without weighing down the fabric. Because chiffon is breathable, it remains comfortable even in warmer weather, making it ideal for outdoor summer gatherings.

Wrap-style chiffon gowns provide a flattering fit for various body types, accentuating the waist while skimming over curves. Long sleeves in sheer chiffon add a modest yet stylish element, suitable for more conservative settings.

Metallic or shimmery finishes on chiffon gowns catch the light beautifully, creating a dazzling effect for special occasions. Since chiffon is versatile, it transitions seamlessly from daytime garden parties to glamorous evening affairs with the right accessories. Pairing a chiffon gown with strappy heels and delicate jewelry enhances its elegance, while a clutch or small handbag completes the polished look. Investing in a well-designed chiffon gown ensures a timeless piece that can be styled differently for multiple events. The soft, airy nature of chiffon makes it a wardrobe staple that exudes sophistication and charm year after year.

Fuel Prices Drop –

0

Consumers are breathing a sigh of relief as Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) across the country have reduced fuel prices at the pumps.

The reduction follows a relative stability in the exchange rate of the cedi against major trading currencies, especially the US dollar, which is one of the key determinants of fuel pricing in the country’s deregulated petroleum market.

The latest adjustments, which took effect at the start of the month, see petrol now selling at GH¢11.77 per litre at Star Oil, with diesel also seeing a drop from GH¢13.99 to GH¢12.49.

GOIL has reduced a litre of petrol from GH¢13.27 to GH¢12.52. Diesel is now selling at GH¢12.98 from its old price of GH¢13.27, whilst Allied Oil is selling a litre of petrol at GH¢12.15. It is also selling a litre of diesel at GH¢13.35.

Some other OMCs have already adjusted their prices, with the rests expected to follow suit in the coming days.

Industry experts have raised concerns about the margin of reduction by the OMCs.

the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, in its Price Outlook Report, attributed the reduction to the cedi’s appreciation.

This is because prices of crude oil and finished petroleum products have been going up, albeit marginally, on the international market.

According to the Chamber, in the second half of May 2025, the Ghanaian cedi appreciated significantly against the US dollar, strengthening from GH¢13.99 to GH¢12.15, a gain of approximately 13.11%.

The cedi has continued its impressive run on the interbank market, registering substantial gains against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar.

The Chamber maintained that Brent crude price is recovering after dropping to just over $60 per barrel in April 2024 due to the rising U.S. tariffs and increased OPEC+ supply.

The improved market sentiment, driven by the U.S.-UK trade deal and a 90-day accord with China, has also helped stabilise prices around $64 per barrel.

Looking ahead, the EIA forecasts Brent crude could average $65.85 in 2025 and decline to $59.24 in 2026, as global oil production is expected to outpace demand.

Ken Ofori-Atta was never a target until power changed hands – Amidu fires OSP

0

In a scathing critique, former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has accused the current Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), led by Kissi Agyebeng, of politicised law enforcement and opportunism, following its recent pursuit of Ken Ofori-Atta.

Amidu alleged that the OSP’s renewed interest in Ofori-Atta, long after his departure from government, is part of a strategy to win the new administration’s favour and secure continued funding.

Italy will continue to collaborate with Ghana in security – Ambassador

0

The Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Laura Ranalli, has reaffirmed her country’s commitment to continued collaboration with Ghana in the area of security, with a shared resolve to stabilise the Gulf of Guinea region.

She noted that Italy would support this collaboration through bilateral, multilateral, and European partnerships with Ghana in pursuit of that objective.

The Ambassador made this known while proposing a toast at a reception held at her official residence in Accra last Friday (May 30, 2025), to mark Italy’s National Day.

The event was attended by a large number of members of the Italian community, ministers of state, traditional rulers, and members of the diplomatic corps.

Ambassador Ranalli stated that Italy and Ghana share profound and multifaceted ties, and to deepen those ties, the Italian government had recently included Ghana in the “Mattei Plan”—a strategic and tangible framework designed to enhance Italy’s cooperation with African nations on a peer-to-peer basis.

Under the plan, Italy’s projects in Ghana focus on agribusiness, particularly a “Strengthening Agri-Food Ecosystems” partnership with the private sector in the Volta Region, and an extensive health initiative aimed at strengthening hospital infrastructure and improving access to quality healthcare.

“The framework also includes the Digital Flagship Initiative, which aims at designing bankable, multi-year initiatives focused on digital connectivity and public infrastructure, and several initiatives on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) with Ghanaian institutions, universities, and non-governmental organisations,” said Ambassador Ranalli.

Touching again on security, she announced that the Italian Navy ship Bettica, currently on a patrol mission in the Gulf of Guinea, is scheduled to visit the Port of Tema in mid-June this year.

LatexFoamPromo

Providing an overview of the bilateral relations between Italy and Ghana, the Ambassador reported that trade between the two countries had reached €800 million in 2023, and €700 million in 2024.

She recalled Italy’s early support for Ghana’s independence and its integral role in the country’s modernisation journey.

“Notable examples include the construction of the Akosombo Dam and the establishment of the Tema Oil Refinery by Italian companies. The tradition of cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and construction continues to this day, with Italian firms also playing a key role in agriculture,” she said.

Ambassador Ranalli further noted that numerous Italian families had settled in Ghana over the past century, contributing significantly to the country’s economic development. Likewise, she said, Italy continues to benefit immensely from a vibrant, active, and well-integrated Ghanaian community, whose cultural and entrepreneurial influence enriches Italian society.

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emilia Arthur, who represented the Government of Ghana at the reception, paid glowing tribute to the Ambassador.

She said since Ambassador Ranalli’s arrival in Ghana in December 2024, her dedication to strengthening Ghana–Italy relations had been evident.

“We have already witnessed significant engagements in our relations; your commitment is making a difference, and we are eager to collaborate further to deepen the warm and long-standing ties,” she said.

The Minister also praised Italy’s active participation in multilateral initiatives and its support for European Union programmes in Ghana, describing them as clear testimony of Italy’s strong belief in international cooperation.

Among the dignitaries present at the reception was the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV.

Latest fuel price reductions were woeful

Fuel prices have reduced at the pumps Fuel prices have reduced at the pumps

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah, has noted that the reductions in the prices of petroleum products at the pumps in the latest pricing window were inadequate.

According to him, the rate of appreciation was wide enough to trigger a higher rate of reduction than what was given.

He noted that fuel prices should have been selling below GH¢12 instead of the current prices at which some OMCs are selling.

“The reduction that has been passed for the first window in June is good but woeful. As of Friday, you had BDCs selling around GHȼ8 a litre for petrol and between GHȼ8.50 and GHȼ9 for diesel. If you add the cumulative tax incidence of GHȼ3.27 and the OMC margin of 40-50 pesewas a litre, you do not expect any OMC to do anything about GHȼ11.70 at this point. But you still have some selling at GHȼ12 and above. It tells you that there is clearly a challenge somewhere,” he was quoted by citinewsroom.com.

The prices of petroleum products reduced marginally at the pumps at the beginning of the first pricing window of June.

The drop follows the constant appreciation of the cedi against the dollar on the interbank and forex markets.

Checks by GhanaWeb Business show that as of Monday, June 2, 2025, at 9:00 AM, Goil, the leading oil marketing company, has adjusted its price to reflect the gains of the cedi.

The new rates are as follows:

Super XP is selling at GH¢12.52

Diesel XP is selling at GH¢12.98

Super XP/RON 95 is selling at GH¢14.34

TotalEnergies has also adjusted its prices from its previous pricing window of May 2025.

Super XP is selling at GH¢13.30

Diesel XP is selling at GH¢13.99

Ron 95 is selling at GH¢16.10

Also, some smaller OMCs have adjusted their prices in accordance with that of Goil.

New prices at Star Oil stations are GH¢11.77 for petrol, down from GH₵12.57, and GH¢14.89 for its Ron 95.

Allied Oil, another smaller OMC, is also selling its Super XP for GH¢12.15, Diesel XP for GH¢13.35.

Man United and West Ham’s swap deal for Kudus and Sancho collapses

Man United reportedly wanted Kudus (L) in a swap deal for Sancho (R) Man United reportedly wanted Kudus (L) in a swap deal for Sancho (R)

Manchester United and West Ham United held exploratory talks over a potential swap deal involving Jadon Sancho and Mohammed Kudus, according to transfer expert Graeme Bailey.

Sancho, who is set to leave Chelsea after a loan spell, was reportedly open to joining West Ham in a bid to revive his career.

Kudus, meanwhile, had shown a strong desire to make the switch to Old Trafford, intrigued by the opportunity to play under Ruben Amorim, who has long admired the Ghanaian midfielder.

However, despite initial interest from all parties, the proposed swap fell through after West Ham’s management team raised doubts over Sancho’s fit within their tactical setup.

Concerns over his defensive work rate, consistency, and how he would integrate into Graham Potter’s system ultimately led the Hammers to back away from the deal.

The development comes at a pivotal time for Sancho, who is now on the lookout for a new club. His loan stint at Chelsea will not be made permanent after the two parties failed to agree on personal terms.

As a result, Chelsea are obligated to pay Manchester United a £5 million penalty, per the terms of the original loan agreement, adding another layer of complication to Sancho’s future.

Manchester United remain eager to offload the winger permanently this summer, but with the West Ham route closed and the Chelsea chapter over, the 25-year-old will need to assess his options quickly ahead of pre-season.

For Kudus, the breakdown of the swap deal may not end his hopes of a Premier League move, with Manchester United still interested and monitoring his situation closely.

The Ghanaian star finished the season strongly and remains one of West Ham’s prized assets.

Who are the fugitives under manhunt?

0

It is a normal practice for law enforcement bodies such as the Ghana Police Service to issue wanted notices for persons being pursued for various criminal offences.

However, the unprecedented declaration of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a wanted fugitive in one of the top high-profile cases in the Fourth Republic by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in February 2025 cast a spotlight on how investigative bodies manage individuals who fail to cooperate with ongoing cases.

The OSP said he had failed to honour multiple summons for questioning related to several corruption allegations, including those concerning Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contracts, the National Cathedral project, and others.

This declaration was widely publicised via an OSP press release. Mr Ofori-Atta’s name was subsequently removed from this status after he communicated a firm date for his voluntary return to Ghana, which was set for today, June 2, 2025. Failure to appear would trigger a re-declaration and a potential INTERPOL Red Notice.

Now trending, taking centre stage in media discussions (both traditional and new) and on the streets again, is the word “Wanted” as the ultimatum issued to Mr Ofori-Atta elapses today.

With sudden public interest on the matter, many Ghanaians have expressed curiosity about whether other individuals might secretly be on the OSP’s list of wanted persons, beyond those cases that gain significant media attention.

The OSP uses targeted press releases to declare individuals wanted or fugitives from justice on a case-by-case basis and maintains a public “wanted persons” directory on its website.

As of midday on the deadline set for Mr Ofori-Atta, there were four persons officially wanted by the anti-graft body.

Three males and one female are being pursued for various corruption and corruption-related offences.

They are: Derrick Asomang, 37; Anthony Gyasi, 34; Sadia Alhassan, 41; and Francis Asare, 27.

The details of the suspects and the reasons for being on the “Wanted” list are boldly displayed on the official website of the OSP, together with their photos.

These individuals are part of active investigations and may be subject to arrest or prosecution after evading legal processes.

The OSP’s mandate, established under the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959), empowers it to investigate and prosecute specific cases of corruption and corruption-related offences, recover proceeds of corruption, and take steps to prevent it.

Its declarations, such as “wanted person” or “fugitive from justice”, are tools used to compel cooperation and ensure accountability, particularly when subjects attempt to elude the investigative process.

Wontumi withdraws bail variation application from court

0

Mr Gary Nimako Marfo, the Director of Legal Affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), yesterday filed an application at the High Court in Accra to discontinue his pursuit of bail for the beleaguered Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

The lawyer had earlier filed a motion seeking the court to vary the bail condition of Mr Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, who is currently in the Economic and Organised Crime Organisation (EOCO) for alleged criminal offences.

Mr Marfo was expected to move his motion before the court today, to impress on the court to review the bail condition which was pegged at GH¢50 million by EOCO.

On Friday, May 30, Mr Boasiako got sureties, including Bryan Acheampong, NPP’s Member of Parliament for Abetifi in the Eastern Region to fulfil his bail bond.

Before then, Mr Marfo had filed a motion in court, against the backdrop that the GH¢50 million set by EOCO was too high and unreasonable.

Mr Boasiako was arrested by EOCO on May 26, after attending to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra.

His party, the NPP, had said that the arrest was politically motivated to teach the Ashanti Region Chairman a lesson.

Mr Alexander Kwabena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and stalwarts of the NPP, boycotted parliamentary proceedings to picket at EOCO.

Some of allegations levelled against him included; money laundering and causing financial loss to the state.

At the time of filing this report, Mr Boasiako was still in custody.

‘I will never trust Appiah-Kubi, I have blocked his number’ – Gary Nimako

Gary Nimako (L) has accused Andy Appiah-Kubi (R) of lying about Wontumi's bill variation application Gary Nimako (L) has accused Andy Appiah-Kubi (R) of lying about Wontumi’s bill variation application

The Director of Legal Affairs of the New Patriotic Party, Gary Nimako, has lambasted Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the lawyer of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Monday, June 7, 2025, Gary Nimako accused Appiah-Kubi of telling lies about not knowing of a bail variation application he filed for the court to reduce the GH¢50 million bail set by EOCO for Wontumi’s release.

He added that Appiah-Kubi’s assertion that Wontumi was not granted bail on Friday, May 30, 2025, because of the variation application he (Nimako) filed was totally wrong.

“A variation application is not an injunction application that could have stopped the ongoing process. It was a plea to the court to reduce the bail amount because it was too much, so we could meet the condition of release. So, if by God’s grace someone was able to meet the conditions, why don’t we sign and just go?

“The bail condition was GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified. If you met it, why didn’t you go ahead to sign it? At 8 pm, were the documents sent to the Lands Commission, and who at the Lands Commission was working at 8 pm? Let’s ask questions for Andy Appiah-Kubi to come and answer. He cannot throw it in the air, that the process has been frustrated because someone has filed a variation – the process has stopped. That is disingenuous,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He added; “How do you do this? It is not right, it is not fair. I had spoken to you (Appiah-Kubi) and discussed this with you before filing (the bail variation application). And you came out to say you don’t know anything about this… I have blocked his number.”

“No woman deserve to die while she dey give birth to her child,” Mabel Onwuemena, national co-ordinator of di Women of Purpose Development Foundation.

She explain say some women, especially for rural areas, believe “say visiting hospitals na total waste of time” and choose “traditional remedies instead of seeking medical help, and e fit delay life-saving care”.

For some, dem no fit reach hospital or clinic on time becos of lack of transport, but Ms Onwuemena believe say even if dem manage to, dia problems no go finish.

“Many healthcare facilities lack di basic equipment, supplies and trained personnel, e make am difficult to provide quality service.”

Nigeria federal goment currently spend only 5% of dia budget on health – well short of di15% target wey di kontri commit to in 2001 African Union treaty.

For 2021, na 121,000 midwives dey for population of 218 million and less dan half of all births na im skilled health worker dey involve. Di kontri need estimate of 700,000 more nurses and midwives to meet di World Health Organization recommended ratio.

Also dem dey experience lack of doctors.

Di shortage of staff and facilities put some off seeking professional help.

“I honestly no trust hospitals much, we get many stories of negligence, especially in public hospitals,” Jamila Ishaq tok.

“For example, wen I born my fourth child, complications dey during labour. Di local birth attendant advise us make we go to di hospital, but wen we get dia, no healthcare worker dey available to help me. I go back home, and na dia I eventually give birth,” she explain.

Di 28-year-old from Kano state dey expect her fifth pikin.

She add say she go consider going to private clinic but di cost dey high.

Chinwendu Obiejesi, wey dey expect her third pikin, fit pay for private health care for hospital and ” she no go consider to give birth anywia else”.

She tok say among her friends and family, maternal deaths dey rare, whereas she don dey hear about dem quite frequently.

She dey live in wealthy suburb of Abuja, wia hospitals dey easier to reach, good roads dey, and emergency services dey work. More women in di city also dey educated and know di importance of going to di hospital.

“I always attend antenatal care… E allow me to speak wit doctors regularly, do important tests and scans, and keep track of both my health and di baby,” Ms Obiejesi tell di BBC.

“For instance, during my second pregnancy, di doctors dey expect say I fit bleed heavily, so dem prepare extra blood in case we need transfusion. Thankfully, I no need am, and evritin go well.”

However, one of her family friend no dey lucky.

During her second labour, “di birth attendant no fit deliver di baby and try to force am out. Di baby die. By di time dem rush am to di hospital, e don late. She still undergo surgery to deliver di baby’s body. e dey heart-breaking.”

Dr Nana Sandah-Abubakar, director of community health services at di kontri National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), acknowledge say di situation bad, but e tok say new plan dey in place to address some of di issues.

Last November, di Nigerian goment launch di pilot phase of di Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (Mamii). Eventually dis go target 172 local goment areas across 33 states, wey account for more dan half of all childbirth-related deaths in di kontri.

“We identify each pregnant woman, know wia she dey live, and support her through pregnancy, childbirth and beyond,” Dr Sandah-Abubakar tok.

So far, 400,000 pregnant women in six states wey don find house-to-house survey, “wit details of weda dem dey attend ante-natal [classes] or not”.

“Di plan na to start to link dem to services to ensure say dem get di care [dem need] and dem go deliver safely.”

Mamii aim to work wit local transport networks to try and get more women to clinics and also encourage pipo make dem sign up to low-cost public health insurance.

E dey too early to say weda this get any impact, but di authorities hope say di kontri fit eventually follow di trend of di rest of di world.

Globally, maternal deaths don drop by 40% since 2000, thank to di expanded access to healthcare. Di numbers also don improve in Nigeria ova di same period – but only by 13%.

Despite Mamii, and oda programmes, being welcome initiatives, some experts believe say dem need to do more – including greater investment.

“Dia success depend on sustained funding, effective implementation and continuous monitoring to ensure say di intended outcomes dey achievable,” Unicef Oga Dohlsten tok.

In di meantime, di loss of each mother in Nigeria – 200 every day – go continue to be tragedy for di families wey dey involved.

For Oga Edeh, di grief ova di loss of im sister still dey fresh.

“She step up to become our anchor and backbone becos we lost our parents wen we dey grow up,” e tok.

“In my lone time, wen she cross my mind. I dey cry bitterly.”

Couples Outfits That Are Perfect For Any Occasion

News Hub Creator2h

Couples outfits are a stylish way to showcase unity while maintaining individuality. Coordinating colors, patterns, or styles creates a harmonious look without being overly matchy. Neutral tones like beige, white, or gray work well for a subtle yet polished appearance. Denim pairs effortlessly with casual tees, making it a versatile choice for everyday wear. For a more playful vibe, couples can experiment with complementary colors like navy and mustard or blush and sage. Prints such as stripes, checks, or florals add visual interest while keeping the outfits cohesive. Layering with jackets, cardigans, or scarves enhances the look, especially during cooler weather. Formal occasions call for elegant coordination, such as a black-tie ensemble with a matching gown or suit. Soft pastels or monochromatic outfits create a sophisticated aesthetic for weddings or date nights. Seasonal themes, like cozy sweaters in winter or breezy linen in summer, ensure comfort while staying stylish.

Accessories like matching watches, shoes, or hats can tie the outfits together without being too obvious. Athleisure wear, such as coordinated sneakers and joggers, is perfect for a casual day out. Themed events allow for creativity, with costumes or color-blocked outfits making a bold statement. Footwear should complement both looks, whether it’s sneakers for a relaxed vibe or heels and dress shoes for formal events. Textures like leather, silk, or knitwear add depth to the overall appearance. The key is balance—avoiding overly identical outfits while ensuring harmony in style. Subtle details, like matching pocket squares or jewelry, enhance the connection between the outfits. Ultimately, couples’ fashion should reflect personal taste while celebrating togetherness effortlessly. Whether dressed up or down, coordinated outfits strengthen the bond while making a fashionable impression.

BoG clamps down on hidden bank charges; tightens rules on interests, other fees

0

The Bank of Ghana is preparing to roll out a stringent set of directives targeting opaque bank charges, unsafe digital lending practices and governance lapses within the banking sector.

This is part of new measures to protect customers and strengthen regulatory oversight.

The Central Bank is signalling a tougher stance on commercial banks that continue to impose arbitrary fees under the guise of operational cost recovery, warning that the era of unchecked charges will no longer be tolerated.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr. Johnson Asiama, disclosed this at the opening session of a post-Monetary Policy Committee meeting with Heads of Banks where he announced that authorities are finalising a comprehensive policy directives that will set clear benchmarks on pricing disclosures across licensed banks.

In addition, the Bank is tightening controls on interest charges across digital platforms, enhancing transparency in foreign exchange (FX) pricing, addressing non-performing loans (NPLs) and ensuring the recapitalisation of commercial banks.

“We have received reports that some banks continue to apply interest charges on credit accounts that remain inactive. This results in cases where accrued interest exceeds the original principal.”

“Let me clear, such practices are unacceptable and must end. This distorts customer outcomes and misrepresent the true profitability of lending portfolios and violates the principles of fair treatment and transparency. We expect all banks to review their pricing models and ensure that customer charges reflect ethical and commercially defensible standards”, the Governor said.

The implementation of all these new regulations will be phased.

Some are taking effect from July and August 2025, while others such as a 10% cap on NPL ratios are expected to become operational in 2026.

One key component of the measures is a directive requiring commercial banks to publish details of “blacklisted” borrowers and entities with a history of default in their annual accounts.

This is to improve credit risk management and deter chronic defaults that continue to threaten the stability of the banking system.

Sharing state matters on personal social media is “unethical” – Kwabena Agyapong

0

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyapong, has criticised the growing trend of government officials using their personal social media accounts to communicate matters of state, describing the practice as unethical and a violation of public service standards.

His comments follow a post made by Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account, explaining the circumstances of the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Mr. Agyapong expressed concern over the blurring of personal and official channels, especially in sensitive cases involving state institutions.

According to him, the usage of personal platforms to share state information not only breaches ethical norms but also undermines public trust in official communication structures.

“EOCO is an intelligence gathering organisation, just looking at economic crime. Apart from the Deputy AG, Srem-Sai, who took this his personal social media handle to explain what Wontumi was being investigated for. His personal handle is not an official handle; that again is wrong.

“It is very wrong for state officials to be promoting their personal social media presence using official issues. That is completely unethical and should go against the code of conduct that the president has put in place.

“If the Attorney General’s Office has a social media handle and officially posts information there, we can accept, as the current position of the Minister of Justice. But not on your personal social media handle, it is incorrect, unethical, and wrong,” he stated.

He called for all official updates to be disseminated through institutional or verified government channels to avoid misinformation and speculation.

“As of now, there is all manner of rumours going around, but they must be official.”

A similar concern was raised by the Minority in Parliament, when the Minister for Foreign Affairs announced the closure of Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., via his personal Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

Led by Ranking Member Samuel A. Jinapor, the Minority on Tuesday, May 27, criticised the approach as a sharp departure from Ghana’s tradition of quiet diplomacy.

“We were utterly shocked and surprised to learn of the decision through public announcements, rather than through prior engagement with the Foreign Affairs Committee,” Jinapor said.

“Such a significant action should have been preceded by a briefing to the committee and addressed through tactful diplomatic channels.”

2. Income instability: 68% worked informally or seasonally

3. Over-leveraging: Average defaulter had 3+ loans and 45%+ debt-to-income ratio

4. Short credit histories: 67% defaulted within 6 months of opening an account

How Does myCreditScore Work Its Magic?

myCreditScore applies a real-time scoring system that factors in:

1. Age, occupation, location, marital status

2. Social media footprint and payment behaviour

3. Tiered risk categorisation and credit limits

The 2025 Ghana Footballer of the Year Award will be keenly contested among three brilliant players who carved out their niche during the year under review for their respective clubs and the national team.

The much-coveted Ghana Footballer of the Year award will be competed for by Inaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao, Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth, and Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.

The nominees contributed to their various teams and the Black Stars in the year under review by scoring, providing assists, and playing other roles to aid their teams.

This feature throws light on the performances of the nominees and their chances of clinching the accolade.

Antoine Semenyo

Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo had a fantastic season in the Premier League as well as for the Black Stars in the 2024/2025 season.

In the Premier League, he played 37 games, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists; in the FA Cup, Semenyo made four matches, netting two goals and one assist.

In the English Football League (EFL) Cup, he played one match without registering any goals or assists. Throughout the season, the striker played 42 matches, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists.

In the 2025 World Cup qualifiers, Semenyo played a significant part in most games and scored against Chad during Ghana’s 5-0 thrashing.

His statistics put him in a strong position to compete for the award.

Inaki Williams

Athletic Bilbao’s pacy attacker, Inaki Williams, starred for his club side after leading them to qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League and the semi-finals of the 2024/25 Europa League.

In the Spanish La Liga, the forward played 35 matches, scoring six goals and providing eight assists; in the Europa League, he played six matches, scoring five goals and one assist; in the Copa del Rey, he scored two goals with no assists; and in the Super Copa, he played one game with no goals or assists.

Inaki Williams played a key role for the Black Stars despite his initial struggles, netting once in Ghana’s 5-0 massive win over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Thomas Partey

Arsenal midfield maestro Thomas Partey might be the most popular among the nominees following his performance in the UEFA Champions League, especially against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

In the Premier League, he played 35 games, recording four goals and two assists; in the Champions League, he played 12 games with no goals but one assist; in the EFL Cup, he played four matches with no goals or assists; and in the FA Cup, he played one match with no goals or assists.

He played 52 games in total, scoring four goals and making three assists.

He played a crucial part in the Black Stars’ away victory against Madagascar by scoring twice and making brilliant midfield interceptions to keep the game intact in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

With none of the nominees winning a major trophy with their respective clubs, the race remains wide open, and any of them could be given the accolade based on their performances.

Ofori-Atta’s ‘media disclosure’ on ailment afterthought – Sammy Darko

0

The Director of Strategy, Research and Communication Division at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Sammy Darko, has dismissed the medical report released by the lawyers of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as an “afterthought.”

This comes after Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team purportedly submitted a letter from the Mayo Clinic—where he is receiving treatment—to the OSP, detailing his health condition amid ongoing investigations.

The report, which was also shared with sections of the media, revealed that the former minister had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is scheduled to undergo surgery in June 2025.

The letter stated: “The former finance minister has undergone an MR-guided biopsy and has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Surgical intervention has been deemed necessary after the testing and MRI biopsy procedure in March 2025, as I indicated in my February letter. This surgical procedure has been scheduled for June with Dr. Paras Shah of the Department of Urology.”

However, Sammy Darko questioned the timing and authenticity of the disclosure.

In an interaction with Citi News, he criticised the decision to make the document public through the media while failing to submit it formally to the OSP.

“If you have this and you won’t show this to the SP or the office, but you can share it with Asaase Radio—fake afterthought,” Darko remarked.

The former finance minister was scheduled to meet the OSP physically on Monday, June 2, but failed to honour the invitation, prompting the OSP to issue a wanted notice on Ken Ofori-Atta, and formally requested an INTERPOL Red Notice, which could lead to Mr. Ofori-Atta’s international arrest and extradition.

According to the OSP, the move follows the former minister’s repeated failure to honour invitations for questioning in connection with ongoing corruption investigations.

Key Issues Under Investigation

Petroleum and Minerals Revenue Assurance
– Contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Electricity Company Contract Termination
– Termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC).

His lawyers informed the OSP that he was abroad indefinitely for medical reasons and offered to represent him in his absence.

5th February 2025
The OSP rejected the claim of indefinite absence and demanded a firm return date by 10 February 2025, warning of legal consequences. It also reminded that legal representatives cannot respond to criminal charges on behalf of clients.

10th February 2025
His lawyers submitted a doctor’s note (not addressed to any specific party), indicating he was undergoing tests and possibly surgery, with no clear return date.

12th February 2025
With no further cooperation, the OSP declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice, acting on an arrest warrant.

18th  February 2025
Mr. Ofori-Atta appealed to the OSP for removal from the ‘Wanted List’ and, for the first time, provided a definite return date in May 2025. The OSP accepted this assurance and removed his name from the list.

Legal Challenge

March 2025
Mr. Ofori-Atta filed a lawsuit against the OSP and the Special Prosecutor, seeking compensation for what he described as an unlawful declaration of him as wanted. He also requested the removal of related content from the OSP’s social media platforms.

28 March 2025
The Human Rights Court heard an interim application from Mr. Ofori-Atta, asking the court to restrain the OSP from declaring him wanted again.

In a recent interview with media personality VJ Adams, Simi explained that Duduke isn’t her daughter’s name and doesn’t mean anything.

“I try not to react too much to that, but stop calling my child Duduke.”

We used to run errands together – Mahama shares childhood ties with Otumfuo

0

President John Mahama has opened up on his long-standing relationship with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, revealing that their bond dates back to their childhood days in Ringway Estates, Osu, Accra.

Speaking when the Asantehene paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House on Monday, Mr. Mahama recounted fond memories of growing up opposite the home of Nana Aduhene, where Otumfuo also spent time during school holidays.

“Our relationship goes back to when I was a child. I was a little boy growing up in Ringway Estates, Osu, and my father’s house was directly opposite Nana Aduhene’s house. Nana Aduhene’s children—Kojo Botsuo, Kwame Nkrumah and others—were our friends,” he said.

Mahama also revealed that Ato Ahwoi and Kwame Ahwoi were part of Nana Aduhene’s extended family and frequently visited the estate, adding to the vibrant environment.

“There was another of Nana’s children who came to spend holidays—we used to call him ‘Kweku Kweku’. It turned out that he was Otumfuo,” he recalled.

He noted that Otumfuo and the older boys would often send him and his peers on errands. “They were a bit older than us, so they used to send us to buy ice cream and all kinds of things for them,” he said with a smile.

Mr. Mahama said he was surprised years later when Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was enstooled, believing at the time that he was from Sefwi.

“When I became a minister and they were enstooling the next Otumfuo, I said, ‘But this is Aduhene’s boy—he’s from Sefwi. How does he become the paramount chief of the Ashantis?’”

He explained that Otumfuo had been deliberately placed in the care of the Omanhene at Ringway for royal grooming. “Apparently, his uncle sent him to be groomed as a king. That’s why he used to come to Ringway on holidays,” he said.

Ama Pratt calls for collective action to empower Zongo girls at Obaasima Summit

0

Press Secretary at the Office of the Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the Obaasima Foundation, Ama Pratt, has called for collective action to tackle social challenges facing young women in Zongo communities.

Speaking at the Obaasima Zongo Girls Summit on Tuesday, June 3, Pratt highlighted issues such as teenage pregnancy and early marriage, which tend to hinder young women from achieving their goals.

She urged young women to break through these barriers and pursue their dreams, stressing the need for strong community support to drive meaningful change.

“This conversation is for that Zongo perspective, to ensure that whatever barriers there are that I’m constantly hearing about, the women who have lived through these barriers and have excelled will come and share their experience and share their knowledge with the younger Zongo girl so that all of us can achieve together.

“So my prayer is that, at the end of the dialogue, if the ladies have some questions on their minds and hearts for a long time, these women can help and assist them. So for me, it’s about what you can do with your circumstances, regardless of what those circumstances might be,” she advised.

The Deputy Women’s Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dzifa Tegah, speaking on the theme, “Reimagining the future of today’s woman”, called for a shift away from discussions surrounding affirmative action law, toward campaigning for new initiatives that benefit women.

“Thirty years ago, sending your girl child to school was a priority because females were home, and the men were being taken to school. Today, it has reduced significantly, so we can’t go with the same campaign again. We have to aspire for higher things, better things.

“Affirmative action, how many years was it in Parliament? Today, it’s no longer our problem. It is time to reimagine the future for today’s women. That means that the campaign has indeed worked. That is why it is important that, yet again, we have to sit down and put together something to think about today. An agenda to push again”, she added.

Why Ken Ofori-Atta’s absence has been linked to Wontumi’s arrest, detention

0

Ken Ofori-Atta is a former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta is a former Minister of Finance

Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, is back in the spotlight after failing to appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on June 2, 2025, the deadline set for his return and appearance.

Due to this, the OSP has redeclared him as wanted and a fugitive, stating that Ofori-Atta’s conduct demonstrated a lack of cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

This has sparked varied conversations among Ghanaians on social media, particularly on X.

Netizens have expressed the view that the former minister may be attempting to evade accountability.

They argue that the medical reasons provided by Ofori-Atta’s legal team appear to be an excuse to avoid appearing before the OSP.

Others have also suggested that the OSP should take it upon itself to verify the former minister’s medical status following a disclosure that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

On the other hand, some netizens have speculated that the recent ordeal of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over alleged crimes might have unsettled Ofori-Atta, possibly influencing his decision not to honor the OSP’s invitation.

Meanwhile, the OSP has accused Ofori-Atta of acting in bad faith, emphasising that suspects cannot dictate the terms of an investigation.

AEA Holds Business Funding Summit

Wilson Kafui Senya

The African Entrepreneurship Academy (AEA), with support from FIDO, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), has organised a business funding summit in Accra aimed at equipping SMEs with knowledge to better navigate the business landscape.

The summit was held under the theme: “Strategies for Startup and SME Financing.”

In an interview, the President of the African Entrepreneurship Academy, Wilson Kafui Senya, stated that the summit was organised to address a key challenge faced by entrepreneurs – access to capital and funding.

The summit brought together members of the entrepreneurial community and financial institutions to create awareness about funding sources available on the market.

He added that, beyond funding, entrepreneurs often struggle with how to start and grow their businesses. Senya emphasized that knowledge sharing is crucial for entrepreneurs to understand the range of financing options available.

He revealed that some startup businesses would receive funding between GH¢5,000 and GH¢20,000 from the AEA Venture Fund, stressing that these funds are not grants but investments intended to help SMEs grow.

Also speaking at the event, Joseph Maxwell Appiah, Head of the Business Unit at FIDO, explained that the company has begun offering business loans to help entrepreneurs expand their operations.

He said FIDO’s main strategy over the next two to three years is to support business growth and encouraged SMEs to take advantage of the opportunity.

In addition, Alex Frimpong, Head of Agricultural Services at ADB, highlighted the importance of SMEs as the engine of economic growth. He stressed that access to loans depends on the credibility of a business, noting that well-maintained records inspire banks to finance operations.

He debunked the perception that businesses can simply walk into a bank and receive funding, pointing out that equity and proper documentation are key considerations for financial institutions.

One of the participants, Karl Appiah Nyamekye, founder of Medo Foods, shared his insights from the summit. He noted that the event had given him valuable knowledge on how to run a business, access funding, and position his company for growth and export.

10-years after June 3 Disaster: Nii Ashitei Ashietey calls for bold action to end perennial flooding

0

With the rainy season already underway and the memory of the June 3rd, 2015, flood and fire disaster still vivid in the minds of Ghanaians, community advocate and tech professional Nii Ashitei Ashietey has led a dredging operation along key sections of the Klottey River in the Klottey Korle constituency—an area repeatedly affected by seasonal flooding.

Mobilising limited resources, Nii Ashitei secured a dredger that operated for several days to desilt and clear critical sections of the river.

The effort removed tons of silt, debris, and waste that had long choked the waterway and contributed to devastating floods.

This community-led initiative comes against the backdrop of one of Ghana’s most painful national memories—the June 3rd, 2015, flood and fire disaster, which claimed over 150 lives and destroyed properties across Accra.

The event remains one of the worst disasters in Ghana’s history, a stark reminder of the consequences of inadequate drainage infrastructure and poor urban planning.

Nearly a decade later, flooding continues to pose a serious threat to Ghana’s development, economy, and national security.

The Klottey Korle constituency was among the hardest-hit areas during the 2015 disaster, and residents still experience recurring floods every rainy season.

“It has been 10 years since the June 3rd tragedy, yet we are still grappling with the same problem,” Nii Ashitei stated. “The Klottey River continues to pose a significant risk to lives and livelihoods. We cannot allow this cycle to persist.”

Nii Ashitei extended his heartfelt commiserations to the families who lost loved ones in the June 3rd tragedy, recognising the deep pain and loss that still linger in the hearts of many Ghanaians.

While acknowledging the government’s recent flood prevention efforts, he emphasised the need for a transformative and sustained approach.

He called for major investment in reengineering Accra’s drainage systems and key waterways, especially at discharge points where rivers like the Klottey meet the sea, to ensure long-term flood resilience.

“The loss of life and property from these floods is a national tragedy, and we cannot afford to wait for the next disaster before acting decisively,” he said. “This is not just an environmental issue; it’s a national security concern, an economic challenge, and a human crisis.”

Nii Ashitei is urging the Ministry of Works and Housing, the Klottey Korle Municipal Assembly, and all relevant agencies to prioritise regular dredging, maintenance of major waterways, and the implementation of long-term flood control infrastructure, supported by robust public education efforts.

Residents have praised the initiative, describing it as a source of hope and relief in a constituency that has long felt neglected.

Still, they insist that lasting solutions will require more than community action; they demand consistent government leadership and sustained investment.

The Klottey River initiative supports Ghana’s national climate resilience strategy and aligns with President John Mahama’s vision for building sustainable, climate-smart urban communities.

However, Nii Ashitei cautions that without sustained government commitment, the cycle of annual flooding will continue to erode progress.

Beyond his flood advocacy, Nii Ashitei is establishing a free ICT and Data Analytics Lab in Osu to equip local youth with digital skills. He notes that environmental resilience is key to sustainable development.

“We are building the future through education and technology, but our people must first have safe and secure environments to thrive,” he stated. “Addressing the Klottey River flooding is not just an environmental issue—it’s an economic and social imperative.”

GRA expands taxpayer base through Electronic VAT system

Over 3,000 taxpayers have been roped into the tax net following the rollout of the Electronic Value Added Tax (E-VAT) system by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

According to the Commissioner-General of GRA, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, his office engaged over 5,000 taxpayers across the country in 2024, with many businesses prepared to be onboarded onto the system.

In an interview with Daily Graphic, Sarpong stated that the E-VAT system will promote full accountability and transparency in revenue collection.

However, he noted that the GRA and the Minister of Finance are conducting a comprehensive review of the system’s structure, which will subsequently require parliamentary approval before full implementation.

“The electronic VAT exercise is ongoing, but as you may be aware, we are conducting a comprehensive review of the entire structure. The Minister of Finance is seriously considering it, and we hope to finalize the work soon to seek parliamentary approval.

“I can assure you that the process is becoming more enhanced, with modern technology playing a key role to ensure full accountability at the end of the day,” he added.

Despite the progress made, the Commissioner-General acknowledged that the system is fraught with some challenges.

The E-VAT system is part of the mandated provisions in the Revenue Administration Act, 2016 (Act 915), which empowers the Commissioner-General to ensure an equitable and fair tax administration system.

Its implementation is expected to formalise a large portion of informal taxpayers and boost domestic tax revenue.

Re-entry to capital markets hinges on consistent coupon payment – SEC Board Chair

0

Dr Adu Anane Antwi, Board Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission Dr Adu Anane Antwi, Board Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission

With less than two months to the second coupon payment in 2025 for the Eurobond holders, Board Chairman-Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr Adu Anane Antwi, has urged government not to renege on its promise.

He said it is imperative that government be consistent in coupon payments to restore confidence in the bond market and make its re-entry into the capital markets smooth, adding that the path back to capital markets hinges on consistent servicing of the debt owed Eurobond investors.

Following the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) in 2022 that eroded public confidence in government bonds, Dr Antwi believes when government consistently honouring its debt obligations will restore confidence in the economy.

Speaking at the National Youth Investment and Financial Literacy Programmes launch organised by the Young Investors Network (YIN), Dr Antwi stressed that:

“Now government has promised to pay every six months after the issuance of new bonds, it has to continuously do that to build back confidence so people will be willing to buy the bonds.”

Government honoured its first coupon payment of US$346million to Eurobond holders in January 2025 after successfully restructuring US$13billion in Eurobond debt, which saw participation by 98 percent of investors.

The next coupon payment is set to take placein July 2025.

He said government cannot rely on Treasury bills for long-term development projects.

“We take somebody’s money, and in three months time you are returning that money to the person. What can you do within the three months?” he quizzed, underscoring the urgent need for government to go back into the capital markets and obtain long-term capital for development.

While presenting on investment opportunities for the youth and investment decision-making, Dr Antwi advised youth to consider investing in instruments with lower risks like government Treasury bills to secure their future.

“Every investment will have some element of risk. But, relatively, government’s short-term Treasury bill has the lowest risk. So if a young man 20 years of age puts in GH¢5,000 now into Treasury bills and rolls it over until retirement, he will become a millionaire,” he noted.

But is it that easy to make an investment decision?

The seasoned lecturer and chartered accountant said: “It should be easy once you decide that you want to build up something for your future”.

“We first have to save before we invest. Savings is just putting something down. But when you invest it, then you are growing your savings,” he noted.

He however noted that: “Unfortunately people are not saving. If you call people who are working, you won’t get even 5 percent of them who are actually saving”.

He bemoaned that when they save they don’t invest their savings, stressing: “When you invest, you can beat inflation and still retain the value of your investment or some of the value.

“I have taken 60 percent return on my investment before,” he shared.

As we know, in banking the higher the risk, the higher the interest and vice versa.

He however cautioned the youth against too risky-ventures disguised with unbelievably high returns.

The Young Investors Network (YIN) is an organisation that promotes investment and sensitises the youth to improve their financial literacy and guide them to make sound investment decisions. It organises competitions, quizzes, investment and financial literacy seminars and events across the country.

New IFAB rule clarifies double-touch penalties after Álvarez VAR controversy

0

Alvarez's penalty against Madrid Alvarez’s penalty against Madrid

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has issued a new clarification on penalty rules following a controversial moment in the Champions League that left fans stunned and players bewildered.

In a high-stakes last-16 shootout between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, former Manchester City striker Julián Álvarez found himself at the heart of an unusual VAR decision that proved decisive.

Álvarez, now playing for Atletico, stepped up to take a crucial penalty with the shootout level at 1-1.

The Argentine slipped as he struck the ball but still managed to send it soaring into the top-left corner, seemingly levelling the shootout at 2-2.

However, moments before Federico Valverde converted Real’s next spot-kick, referee Szymon Marciniak signalled that Álvarez’s effort had been disallowed following a VAR check.

Replays showed Álvarez had made two involuntary touches in one movement while slipping, violating penalty rules.

Under the existing Law 14.1 of IFAB’s Laws of the Game, a player is not permitted to play the ball a second time until it has touched another player.

That law traditionally applies to rebounds off the post or bar, but in Álvarez’s case, it was triggered by a double contact in the same motion.

In response to the incident and others like it, IFAB have now formally clarified how double touches during penalties are to be handled.

According to the new guidance:

If a player involuntarily touches the ball twice before another player does and scores, the penalty will be retaken.

If the ball does not enter the goal, the opposing team will be awarded an indirect free-kick.

In the case of penalty shootouts, any double touch, regardless of outcome, will be recorded as a miss with no retake allowed.

These updated laws aim to reduce ambiguity and ensure consistency in officiating across all levels of the game.

Ernest Yaw Anim with a section of the students

In a bid to inspire and support the next generation of students, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumawu Constituency,  Ernest Yaw Anim, has taken a hands-on approach by organising a free career guidance session and donating essential learning materials to Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in the Sekyere Kumawu District.

The initiative, held over the weekend, brought together hundreds of final-year Junior High School (JHS) students from across the district. The event was designed to help the candidates prepare mentally and academically for the BECE, with experienced facilitators guiding them through how to understand exam questions, select appropriate Senior High Schools (SHS) and TVET options, and build confidence ahead of the examinations.

As part of the support package, each candidate received a mathematical set – a vital tool for their mathematics and science papers. The donation was warmly welcomed by the students and their teachers, who described the gesture as both timely and thoughtful.

Speaking to journalists after the session, Mr. Anim reiterated his commitment to improving educational outcomes in Kumawu. He noted that the career guidance initiative was part of a broader effort he has championed over the past two years to uplift the standard of education in the constituency.

“I believe that investing in the education of our children is one of the most impactful things we can do,” the MP stated. “Today’s programme was not just about handing out materials—it was about equipping our young people with the knowledge, encouragement, and direction they need to succeed.”

He urged the candidates to remain focused and to avoid examination malpractices.

Ten Years On: June 3 disaster survivors share painful memories and call for civic responsibility

0

Today, 3 June, marks ten years since Ghana experienced one of its deadliest disasters—a twin tragedy of fire and flood that claimed over 150 lives at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

The catastrophe unfolded after hours of torrential rainfall caused severe flooding in the capital. Amid the chaos, fuel leakage from the GOIL fuel station ignited—reportedly by a cigarette stub—triggering a massive explosion that compounded the devastation.

A decade later, survivors gathered on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show to relive the haunting memories of that night—stories of terror, trauma, survival, and enduring pain.
“He was my angel, my hero”

Kafui Adzah, one of the survivors, struggled to hold back tears as she recalled the harrowing events. “I never close early, but that day, I did. I picked up my daughter, and we walked home under a strange sky. I called my friend Larry and said, ‘It looks funny, but I’m okay.’ I thought home was safe.”

But safety was fleeting. Floodwaters soon invaded her home, trapping her and her daughter. Panic set in. “I kept telling Larry, ‘It’s fine, it’s fine’—until it wasn’t. I had to cry out for help. I even posted on Facebook, but no one saw.”

Her friend, Larry Dogbe, braved the deadly waters to rescue her. “If saving you and your daughter is the last thing I do, I will do it,” he told her before swimming through treacherous floodwaters to pull them to safety.

“He was my angel, my hero. Without him, I wouldn’t be alive,” Kafui said.

“The sky turned orange”

Akosua Ogyiri, who was at work at Charterhouse when the rain began, shared her ordeal. “We thought the rain would pass, so we waited. Then water rushed into the reception, swallowing everything. The lights went out, and darkness took over.”

Outside, the inferno lit up the night sky. “We could smell fuel in the water. Emergency lines were dead. We didn’t know if we’d live through the night.”

She and her colleagues were eventually rescued by a team led by a military colleague. Though grateful, the psychological scars remain. “We were lucky, but the terror stays with us every day,” she said.

A Call to Action

Akosua lamented the cycle of apathy that often follows national tragedies. “I believe that too often, our motivation to do the right thing comes only from the pain of a disaster. People died, properties were lost, and only then were we ignited to act. But once the disaster subsides, everyone goes back to what they used to do, which is not fixing the problem.”

She stressed that change must be rooted in duty, not disaster.

“Whether you are a citizen or not, you must do your part—keep drains clear, don’t dump refuse anywhere, and don’t block gutters. Just do it.”

She added, “I was expecting that after June 3, there would be clear policies—actions everyone could point to and say, ‘Because of what happened, we now do this to protect lives.’”

Reflecting on her own narrow escape, Akosua said, “Speaking now, ten years later, I realise how close I was to becoming another victim. If I had left earlier that night, I could have been swept away in the floodwaters. Only God knows what might have happened.”

The Way Forward

The testimonies of Kafui and Akosua serve as a poignant reminder that civic responsibility cannot be seasonal. The June 3 disaster was more than a national tragedy—it was a call to action. A decade on, the question remains: have we truly learned from it?

As Akosua concluded, “What we must take from this is that the true ignition to do the right thing must come from a deep sense of responsibility and duty—not just from disaster, but from the commitment to prevent it.”

Most of my songs are inspired by personal experiences, listeners – Gyakie

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Jackline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has stated that while most of her music draws from her personal experiences, she also writes with her listeners in mind.

In an interview with AJ Poundz on Onua TV on June 2, 2025, Gyakie opened up on the inspiration behind her latest release, “Sankofa”, and the concept that shaped the song.

“‘Sankofa’ is the first song I released in 2025. I’ve been working on my album for the past three years, and as we all know, ‘sankofa’ isn’t a taboo concept. It’s actually a love song. I wrote it with certain listeners in mind,” Gyakie explained.

She added, “Most of my songs are drawn from my own experiences, but sometimes I craft the story to resonate with others. With ‘Sankofa’, I had a storyline: some people come out of bad relationships but often feel the urge to go back because of lingering emotions. So in this song, someone who’s found love again is asking their new partner to treat them right, so they won’t feel the need to return to their past.”

The ‘Forever’ hitmaker also expressed admiration for the storytelling abilities of songwriters, likening their creativity to that of film directors.

“I believe songwriters have the potential to direct movies. The way we craft stories through music truly amazes me sometimes,” she added.

‘Carry it out’ – Ofori-Atta’s lawyer dares OSP following re-declaration of client as a fugitive

0

Davies (L) has dared Kissi Agyebeng to go ahead with his re-declaration of Ofori-Atta as wanted Davies (L) has dared Kissi Agyebeng to go ahead with his re-declaration of Ofori-Atta as wanted

Frank Davies, the lawyer of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has reacted to the declaration of his client as wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on June 2, 2025, Frank Davies challenged the OSP to go ahead and carry out the extradition process it has stated to get.

“Well, he has declared him – re-declared him – a wanted person and fugitive from justice. I have listened to all that he said. He has triggered processes to ensure his forced return into the country. He has also caused a red notice alert on him.

“He has always been in the process of triggering extradition or commencing extradition proceedings to ensure a return of Ken Ofori-Atta into the jurisdiction. That is what he has opted to do. So, he should start and carry it out,” he said.

Davies, who is also the Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), went on to slam the OSP for supposedly downplaying the illness of his client.

“But I will just say this to the Office of the Special Prosecutor, that he should stick to his core duties as a Special Prosecutor and as a trained lawyer. I don’t know when he became a medical practitioner to be giving interpretations and all that he said. He’s a legal practitioner. He should stick to his core duties and stop getting himself into areas where he has very little knowledge,” he added.

About the redeclaration of Ofori-Atta wanted

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has once again declared the former finance minister a wanted person after he failed to honour an in-person invitation for questioning.

According to him, Ofori-Atta’s continued absence and non-compliance had exhausted the OSP’s patience, especially after efforts to accommodate his legal team’s request for a virtual session due to his medical treatment abroad.

“This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025,” Kissi Agyebeng emphasised.

The third edition of Atarah Praise brought together hundreds of patrons at the forecourt of Believers Grace Crown Ministry International, located at Adenta Barrier on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

The event served as a platform for believers and many gospel industry stakeholders to converge and exhort their maker.

Kofi Owusu Peprah opened the performances with a breathtaking delivery, which got the whole venue charged.

The host of the night, Prophet Atarah, took his turn amidst an energetic display he is known for.

After taking patrons through his various hits and renditions with Mavis Asante and Piesie Esther, he surprised everyone by playing some instruments live on stage.

This attracted applause from the excited crowd at the event.

Piesie Esther and Mavis Asante took the show to an unstoppable level when they had their turn on the big stage.

Ghanaian gospel talent, Nana Yaw Asare, made a rare appearance on the stage to the admiration of all, dishing out classic soul-inspiring songs from his repertoire.

Together with all the artistes on the bill, they rocked the gathering and created unforgettable memories.

Determined to touch lives, Prophet Atarah gave away sewing machines to two young ladies and enrolled them into a fashion school for free.

This, he said, was an initiative by his foundation to help society, and thanked everyone for joining them for an unforgettable time.

Financial planning still possible without steady income – Kush Mkushi

0

The Financial Director of Absa Bank Ghana, Kush Mkushi, has emphasised that financial planning is not exclusive to individuals with a steady income.

Speaking during Week One of the Citi Business Festival, which focused on financial planning, Mkushi encouraged Ghanaians to adopt a disciplined approach to money management—regardless of their current financial circumstances.

“I still think that even without income, you can do some financial planning. But that relies more on discipline,” he said.

He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the cost of living but urged individuals without regular earnings to evaluate their existing skills and seek ways to generate income.

He cited fresh graduates as a typical example of people who may be in this position.

“It could be that you are just coming out of education and looking for a role. In your financial planning at that time, you will look at the matrix and tell yourself, ‘I just need enough to live, and I need to use my spare time to get some experience that will land me a better job or allow me to start a business on my own,’” he explained.

According to Mkushi, financial planning at such a stage should prioritise meeting basic needs while carving out time to acquire new skills or experiences that can be monetised in the future.

“The way you are thinking about financial planning in this situation is not necessarily to create a service but to meet your basic needs. That creates for you some additional time, which you can use to acquire skills or experience you will monetise in the future,” he noted.

He further stressed the importance of intentionality and discipline in managing finances, particularly during periods of uncertainty or transition.

The Citi Business Festival, powered by 97.3 Citi FM and Channel One TV, is a month-long series of expert-driven conversations and forums dedicated to helping Ghanaians build smarter financial habits and scale business growth.

This year’s festival is held in partnership with Absa Bank Ghana and MTN, and sponsored by Zonda Tec Ghana.

Cocoa farmers wage war against galamsey activities in Ellembelle

0

In June last year, Concerned Cocoa Farmers staged a demonstration against the destruction of their farmlands and the environment due to illegal mining activities.

They also presented a petition to the Member of Parliament for the Ellembelle constituency, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.

A group known as Concerned Cocoa Farmers (CCF), formed in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region on Saturday, June 1, poured out in their numbers to hit the streets in protest against the wanton destruction of the environment through illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the Ellembelle District.

They stormed one of the illegal mining sites at Sendu in the district to express their displeasure and condemnation of the conduct of the illegal miners.

They claimed that the destruction being caused to their cocoa farms and water bodies through these nefarious activities cannot be quantified.

Benjamin Azachie, leader of Concerned Cocoa Farmers, presented their petition to the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle constituency, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.

He urged the lawmaker to use his good office and the august House of Parliament to help stop the forceful takeover of cocoa farms by illegal miners (galamsey operators) in the area.

He said the illegal mining activities continue to destroy their investments and clean water bodies in the affected areas of the District.

Speaking in an interview with journalists, one of the affected residents, Grace Amihere, expressed her dismay at the level of pollution being displayed in the area.

“I’m demonstrating because of the pollution of our water bodies and destruction of cocoa farms. How are we going to feed our children with the destruction of our farms? The operators suddenly came without prior notice to us,” she lamented.

“They tried to pay off my brother to mine in his cocoa farm, but because he refused to accept their money, they have destroyed half of the farm. Why are they doing this to us? This is what worries us. President Akufo-Addo must address this concern. Right now, farmers are not getting water to drink,” she added.

Another affected resident, Ama Amihere, also claimed, “They have destroyed rubber farms and also cheated the farmers after forcefully taking their farms. So, we are pleading with the government that what is happening is not lawful.”

The once-clean River Fia has been polluted after the invasion of “galamsey” activities in the Nyamebekyere-Sendu area of the Ellembelle District.

The Assembly Member of Nyamebekyere Electoral Area, Nicholas Kofi Mawuli, who is deeply worried about the negative development, expressed concerns about the use of Chinese in the front line.

“They are fronting in engaging in the illegalities in this area,” he said.

After over an hour of demonstrating at the Sendu galamsey site, the demonstrators (Concerned Cocoa Farmers) presented their petition to the MP for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.

Armah-Kofi Buah assured the cocoa farmers of his commitment to forward the concerns raised in their petition to the Parliament of Ghana for redress.

He, however, urged the affected residents not to keep quiet but to endeavor to speak loudly against illegal mining activities in the area.

He said the war against the illegal mining activities in the area remains a collective responsibility and all hands must be on deck to stem the tide.
