‘I initiated the peace deal between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy after the 2019 VGMAs incident’

Wendy Shay says she established contact with both artistes after the night Wendy Shay says she established contact with both artistes after the night

Ghanaian singer, Wendy Shay, has revealed that she played a crucial role in resolving the dispute between dancehall rivals Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy following their feud, which turned violent in 2019.

It may be recalled that after a violent confrontation between the two parties on the night of the 2019 Vodafone (now Telecel) Ghana Music Awards, the two parties were brought together by media personality Nana Aba Anamoah for a reconciliatory meeting in May of that year.

However, speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM on July 23, Wendy Shay opened up about the night, lamenting that the events of the night led to serious repercussions for the music industry.

“It isn’t fair to keep bringing up that night because what transpired has seriously damaged the industry. A lot of musicians even lost brand deals, and up till now, many creatives still find it difficult to partner with the corporate industry,” she said.

Wendy Shay recounted how popular Ghanaian entrepreneur Dr Kofi Abban had criticised the industry when she had gone to visit him a day after the VGMA night.

“After winning the award, I went to Dr Kofi Abban’s place to personally thank him, and he told me that he was hurt by what had happened … In the history of music in Ghana, something like that had never happened. It doesn’t look good for the industry,” she said.

Seeking to facilitate a resolution, she asked him how they might repair the damage.

According to her, Dr Kofi Abban wished to reach out to both artistes but lacked their contact information.

“I quickly brought out my phone and called Shatta Wale first and introduced them to each other. I did the same with Stonebwoy.

“I remember him promising them an amount of money while urging them to reconcile. So, that was how the reconciliatory process began,” she recalled.

Addressing the previous perceptions that media personality Nana Aba Anamoah was rather behind the peace building, Wendy Shay clarified, “Nana Aba Anamoah came in later during the process, but I was the one who initiated the entire thing.”

Her intervention, she noted, set the groundwork for a broader reconciliation effort that eventually included notable personalities in the music industry.

Residents of Mpasaaso No 1 and No 2 in the Ahafo Ano South-West District of the Ashanti Region are calling for immediate police protection following a gruesome killing and a shooting incident that has left one young man dead and a pregnant woman fighting for her life.

The violent incident, which occurred on July 18, 2025, according to residents, was the culmination of a long-standing feud between two youth groups which has been ongoing for over a year, causing insecurity in the communities.

The actual bone of contention between these youth groups is yet to be identified; however, residents say their violent activities in the area are making life…

According to youth leader Kojo Asare, the situation has gotten out of hand, with farmers staying away from their farms and students too terrified to attend school.

Residents, in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Thursday, accused the authorities of inaction, despite numerous complaints.

They are now appealing to the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Inspector General of Police to step in immediately to restore peace and protect lives and property in the troubled community.

The Youth Leader, Kwadwo Asare, has urged the District Chief Executive, Abubakar Saddick, to provide protection as the residents face the consequences of these youth groups.

“We’ve made countless complaints, but no arrests have ever been made. The situation keeps getting worse,” Kojo Asare lamented. “If authorities in the region don’t act swiftly, we will be forced to protect ourselves.”

‎The CEO of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has said the government’s efforts to create jobs directly will not work unless the private sector is allowed to lead.

‎Speaking during a discussion on a GhanaWeb X Space on Wednesday, July 23, he said the public sector should rather focus on creating the right environment for businesses to grow and hire more people.

‎“Creating jobs directly is bound to fail. The government must lay the playing field for the private sector to thrive,” he said.

‎He added that the government cannot create enough jobs and trying to do so only increases salary costs and reduces productivity.

‎He urged leaders to support private businesses by making credit more accessible, keeping policies stable, and ensuring fair regulations.

‎His comments come as many Small and Medium-Sized (SMEs) businesses struggle to grow and create jobs due to limited support.

Atta Mills’ sister appeals to Mahama to refurbish late president’s library

0

Ahema Quarshie, sister of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has made a heartfelt appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to facilitate the refurbishment of the John Evans Atta Mills Presidential Library in Cape Coast, which she said has been left to deteriorate.

Speaking during commemorative events marking the 13th anniversary of the former president’s passing, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, Ms. Quarshie said the once-proud memorial and research facility, inaugurated in 2016, is now in a state of disrepair and needs urgent attention to preserve her brother’s legacy.

“One thing that we would also like to draw our president’s attention to is the library that was built in honour of the late Professor Mills almost 10 years ago in Cape Coast,” she said.

“We know that, as we have asked, something will happen.”

The John Evans Atta Mills Presidential Library was commissioned by then-President Mahama on July 24, 2016, to mark the fourth anniversary of the late president’s death.

It was intended to serve as a public archive, research facility, and national monument to honour Mills’ legacy of peace, academic excellence, and public service.

Despite its symbolic and historical importance, the facility has reportedly fallen into neglect over the years, prompting renewed calls for action during this year’s wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra.

Supporters and family members of the late president say rehabilitating the library would not only honour Mills’ memory but also preserve his contributions to Ghana’s democratic development for future generations.

President Mills, who passed away on July 24, 2012, was the first Ghanaian president to die in office. He served from 2009 to 2012, and remains widely remembered for his humility, integrity, and peaceful leadership style.

By Joyce Danso

Accra, July 24, GNA – A 22-year-old security guard, Richmond Botwe, has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for attempted robbery in Nmai Dzorn.

He pleaded guilty before the Adenta Circuit Court to attempting to rob a hairstylist of her iPhone 14 mobile phone valued at GHS15,000.

The incident occurred on April 5, 2025, at Nmai Dzorn, Greater Accra Region.

Botwe was remanded into lawful custody following his plea, and sentence was deferred.

Passing sentence, the trial judge noted that Botwe was a young offender who had not wasted the court’s time.

Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Eric Abban, said the complainant, Ms. Tosin Adesokan, a Nigerian hairstylist residing at Ashalley Botwe School Junction, was attacked while returning to her apartment.

Botwe, employed by a security firm at Adjiriganor, allegedly left his duty post at Caterpillar Junction at about 0400 hours armed with a kitchen knife concealed in his trousers.

At Manfranco Apartment near Nmai Dzorn School Junction, Botwe followed Ms. Adesokan and stabbed her in the back before snatching her phone.

Adesokan struggled with Botwe and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of a co-tenant who apprehended the accused and handed him over to the Police at Nmai Dzorn.

The knife used in the attack was retrieved.

Why Kotoko signed 11 players – China Circles spokesperson explains

0

Spokesperson for Kotoko China Circles 0086, Martin Tawiah, has thrown his support behind the club’s bold offseason transfer activity, which has seen over 11 new players join the squad ahead of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

In an interview addressing concerns about the high turnover, Tawiah provided much-needed context for the club’s recruitment decisions.

“Every club signs new players during transfer windows. At the start of the 2024/25 season, we had only 19 players—19 for the whole season,” he explained.

“And at the end of the season, 7 left, leaving just 12. So the management decided to register up to 30 players for the new campaign.”

Currently, Asante Kotoko have 23 registered players, with long-term absentee Ntim Manu ruled out for the season due to injury.

Tawiah further revealed that management plans to promote at least two players from the academy, bringing the squad total to 25.

Tawiah commended the quality of the new recruits and called on fans to support the team through the rebuilding phase.

“I think it’s okay. The players who have joined are really good. So we should support them. If they blend well with the old players, Kotoko will have a great campaign next season.” he told Agyapa Radio in Kenyasi.

The Porcupine Warriors are expected to feature in the Toyota Cup against Kaizer Chiefs and the GHALCA Top 4 tournament, key preparatory events ahead of what promises to be a competitive season for the Kumasi-based club.

Uphold Mills’ legacy of integrity and peace – Nana Oye urges Ghanaians

0

The Executive Director of the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, has called on Ghanaians to uphold the values and legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, describing him as a symbol of moral leadership, peace, and integrity.

Speaking during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held at Asomdwee Park on Thursday, July 24, 2025, to commemorate the former president’s legacy, Nana Oye urged the nation to draw inspiration from Professor Mills’ life and leadership.

“At a time when political integrity seemed like an oxymoron, Professor Mills stood out as a beacon of moral leadership. His integrity was not situational; it was absolute,” she said.

“Mills was fundamentally a man of peace—not a passive peace, but an active one. He understood that peace was not the absence of conflict but the presence of justice, understanding, and mutual respect.”

She added that Professor Mills’ personal values were seamlessly reflected in his public life. “His approach to family life became the same guiding approach in his presidency. Reputation is built in silence—and it lasts longer than applause,” she remarked.

Nana Oye also highlighted the former president’s notable contributions to Ghana’s legal and governance landscape. As a legal scholar and mentor, Professor Mills was instrumental in shaping a generation of responsible legal professionals.

“Mills helped create a generation of legal professionals who understand their responsibilities. He came to the presidency with a clear vision that was encapsulated in the Better Ghana Agenda. This was not a mere campaign slogan but a comprehensive framework for national development,” she stated.

Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who passed away on July 24, 2012, was a distinguished Ghanaian politician and legal scholar. He served as Ghana’s President from January 7, 2009, until his untimely death in 2012—making him the first sitting president in Ghana’s history to die while in office.

Before his presidency, Prof. Mills served as Vice President from 1997 to 2001 under President Jerry John Rawlings. He ran as the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2000 and 2004 elections, but it was in 2008 that he secured victory, defeating Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the then-governing party.

Throughout his political career, Mills was widely respected for his integrity, humility, and commitment to peace and national unity.

Mills’ legacy inspired ‘Reset Agenda’

President John Dramani Mahama has attributed the incumbent administration’s Reset Agenda to the solid foundation laid by the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills through his Better Ghana Agenda.

He described his leadership as an era characterised not by political insults, but by service, integrity, and principle.

Speaking at the wreath-laying ceremony marking the 13th anniversary of the passing of the late President Mills, President Mahama emphasised that the memorial should not be viewed merely as a ceremonial act, but as a national duty a moment to reflect on the legacy of the late President.

“If there’s one lesson we draw from the life of President Mills, it is that no challenge is insurmountable when we lead with integrity, when we listen with empathy, and when we govern with principle,” he stated.

“Professor Mills governed this country with a deep moral compass. He placed truth over expediency, people over politics, and the country over self,” the president said.

President Mahama further addressed the current state of the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Library.

He acknowledged concerns about its condition and gave assurances that plans are underway, with the Chairman of the planning committee for the library Project,  implementing efforts to renovate and restore the facility to its intended standard.

Thursday’s ceremony was attended by senior government officials, executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), members of the party’s Council of Elders, relatives of the late president, and members of the public. Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin were also present.

Professor Mills served as president from 2009 until his death in 2012. He is widely remembered for his calm approach to leadership, promotion of peace, and focus on social justice.

Invest in non-traditional, services exports to boost forex — BoG Governor

0

Ghana must harness the untapped information technology, digital finance, education services, architecture and creative industries, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, has said.

With the right regulatory support and market access frameworks, he said those sectors could generate stable foreign exchange (forex), create high-quality jobs, and diversify the country’s revenue streams while reducing Ghana’s dependence on traditional exports such as cocoa, gold and oil.

“Beyond commodities, we must invest in non-traditional and services exports,” the Governor stated at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting in Accra last Tuesday.

The quarterly event, the second of four for the year, brought together stakeholders, including industry leaders, financial experts, policymakers and academics, to discuss the critical issue of sustaining forex gains and their impact on the country’s economic development.

His comment comes at a time when Ghana’s economy is experiencing critical structural reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability.

Experts over the years have stressed that Ghana’s over-reliance on primary commodities has exposed the country to external shocks such as unstable global prices and currency depreciation.

Recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) showed that the Services remained the economy’s largest sector in the first quarter of 2025, contributing 46.8 per cent to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at basic prices, yet the contribution of high-value knowledge sectors within this category remains relatively small.

Forex stability

Dr Asiama said while the cedi’s resurgence was commendable, it must not lull the country into complacency.

He indicated that sustaining forex gains was a far more complex task than achieving them.

“It requires anticipating headwinds, managing contradictions, and addressing deeply embedded structural challenges. It is not enough to stabilise the Cedi.

The real measure of success is whether we can translate forex stability into broad-based economic transformation; one that empowers businesses, creates jobs and lifts the productive capacity of the nation,” he stated.

With cocoa, for instance, he said it was time to scale value-added processing, branding and retail export chains.

For gold, the Governor said the country must accelerate efforts towards in-country refining and bullion storage, adding that “in oil and gas, investment in a petrochemical industry is now imperative.”

Reinvesting locally

Dr Asiama further emphasised that strengthening the local economy required more than stabilising the currency, noting that despite a 42 per cent year-on-year appreciation of the cedi in 2025, Ghana remained vulnerable due to limited reinvestment of export revenues.

He explained that many exporters reportedly held their earnings offshore, limiting the productive use of foreign exchange within the country, a behaviour that weakened the financial ecosystem and undermined long-term growth prospects.

To address this challenge, Dr Asiama proposed tax incentives, preferential credit access and public procurement privileges for exporters who reinvest locally.

Domestic infrastructure

An Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Ghana Business School, Agyapomaa Gyeke-Dako, commended the central bank’s efforts at monetary stabilisation. However, she emphasised the need for coordinated government action to address inflation and supply chain bottlenecks that put pressure on the currency.

She advocated reforms aimed at improving domestic infrastructure and addressing inefficiencies in the agricultural value chain, particularly the disparity between farmgate prices and market prices.

“If we are serious about inflation control, we must deal with the power that market queens wield and reintroduce competition mechanisms, such as state-led food distribution companies, to ensure affordable prices in urban markets,” she stated.

Prof. Gyeke-Darko further highlighted the need to change the way importers accessed foreign exchange.

She explained that the overly stringent bank procedures pushed many traders to the black market, fuelling unofficial forex trading and tax evasion.

“There must be a balance between enforcing tax compliance and ensuring that genuine importers are not burdened with unrealistic documentation demands.

If we fail to do this, we’ll keep losing revenue and undermining the formal forex market,” she said.

To boost long-term economic resilience, she urged policymakers to expand access to affordable financing for businesses, improve agricultural productivity through education and mechanisation, and introduce guaranteed pricing for food crops, just as is done for cash crops like cocoa.

“If we want to diversify our economy, we must support food crop farmers in the same way we support cocoa farmers.

Price guarantees will provide stability, encourage youth participation in agriculture and reduce rural poverty,” Prof. Gyeke-Darko added.

Ghanaian media personality, Nana Yaa Brefo, has recounted the emotional trauma she went through following what she described as abusive statements from the social commentator, Kevin Taylor.

In a video shared on Instagram on July 24, 2025, Brefo noted that Kevin Taylor’s habit of constantly addressing her as a man had an emotional toll on her.

According to her, the cyber bullying by the controversial YouTuber made her a laughing stock, and netizens also body shaming her.

“I have a personal issue with that young man. He has insulted my personality. God created me as a female. I have a v*gina and breasts, yet he describes me as a man. And that put me through emotional stress.

“Anytime I post something, stup*d people go to the comment section and add their name. Even if it has nothing to do with politics – it is a bit worrying,” she said.

Yaa Brefo also warned netizens, including Kevin Taylor to be mindful of their utterances against her.

“When such a thing is done to someone else, you will be happy, but when the same thing is done to you, then you get angry. I would advise that you people should be careful,” she added.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, is currently presenting the highly anticipated 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review to Parliament today, Thursday, July 24, 2025.

The presentation is taking place amid heightened public and political interest, with many watching to see whether the government will maintain its original expenditure framework or request a supplementary budget in response to fiscal pressures and global economic developments.

The country’s Financial Administration Act mandates this review. It aligns with Section 28 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), which requires the Finance Minister to update Parliament on the execution of the national budget and outline the fiscal strategy for the remaining half of the year.

Dr Forson’s presentation also comes at a time when Ghana’s macroeconomic indicators have shown notable improvement, raising expectations for a budget policy that promotes fiscal discipline, boosts investor confidence, and ensures long-term price stability.

Shatta Wale Warns Police Over New Death Prophecy

0

Shatta Wale

Popular dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has issued a strong warning to the Ghana Police Service, demanding the arrest of a prophet who predicted his death in a viral video.

The unnamed man of God claimed in a video that he had two visions of Shatta Wale being attacked by armed men. In the first vision, the musician survived and later thanked God on social media. However, in the second vision, the prophet claimed three men shot and killed him.

Shatta Wale responded angrily to the prophecy on X, saying such messages are dangerous and should not be ignored.

He gave the police one week to arrest the prophet, warning that if no action is taken, he would respond in a way that would “teach the country a lesson”—though he made it clear his actions would not involve violence.

“Men of God indeed. This is what Dampare supported and it escalated. Ghana Police, if you don’t arrest this man within 1 week, nobody should blame me for what I am capable of doing—and it won’t be violence but a lesson to this country,” he posted.

This is not the first time Shatta Wale has faced a death prophecy. In 2021, another prophet predicted the artiste would be shot. That led Shatta Wale to fake his death, resulting in his arrest for causing fear and panic.

Oppong Nkrumah demands budget clarity on flagship programmes

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase Ayirebi and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, says his main expectation from Thursday’s Mid-Year Budget Review is clarity on how much funding has been released for government’s highly publicised flagship programmes.

According to the Ofoase Ayirebi MP, while at least six initiatives have been launched with fanfare in recent months, “we have reason to believe not much has been released beyond the rhetoric,” making it difficult for sector ministers to implement them and creating frustration among hopeful beneficiaries.

Oppong Nkrumah insists that Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson must “go beyond the headlines” and disclose actual disbursements so far.

Among the major programmes under scrutiny are FeedGhana, the One Million Coders Programme, the National Apprenticeship Programme, Ejumawura, the 24-Hour Economy Initiative, and the Labour Export Programme.

Just last week, the MP called for official documentation on the flagship programmes to be submitted to Parliament to enable proper oversight.

“Clarity from the minister will be helpful,” he told Myjoyonline.com.

Partey’s Fiancée Sparks Breakup Rumors With Cryptic Post

0

Janine Mackson, the fiancée of Arsenal and Ghanaian footballer Thomas Partey, has set social media abuzz with a cryptic post that has fans speculating about her relationship. The model and influencer shared a suggestive message without directly addressing any rumors, leaving followers to read between the lines.

The post, which has gone viral, features a quote or image (exact content unspecified) that many interpret as a subtle commentary on loyalty, trust, or personal struggles. Fans quickly flooded the comments section with theories, with some questioning if there is trouble in paradise between Mackson and Partey. Others defended the couple, suggesting the post may be unrelated to her relationship.

Mackson, who has been relatively private about her romance with Partey, often shares glamorous lifestyle posts but rarely addresses personal matters directly. This latest post, however, has drawn unusual attention due to its ambiguous nature. Meanwhile, Partey, who has faced recent challenges with injuries and club performance, has not publicly reacted to the speculation.

Social media users are divided—some believe Mackson is hinting at deeper issues, while others argue she may simply be sharing a personal reflection. The couple, who got engaged in 2023, have kept their relationship low-key, making any public hints all the more intriguing.

As the post continues to circulate, neither Mackson nor Partey has clarified its meaning, leaving fans in suspense. Whether this is a fleeting moment or a sign of underlying tension remains to be seen, but for now, the mystery has taken over Ghanaian gossip circles.

Mahama should decline Minority’s request to meet him – Adu Asare [Video]

0

Former Member of Parliament for Adentan, Kojo Adu Asare, has urged President John Mahama not to grant an audience to the Minority in Parliament.

According to him, Parliament is the appropriate platform for the Minority to raise their concerns, and they should utilise it rather than boycotting sittings.

“How many times did Akufo-Addo meet with the Minority in his eight years? How many times did President Kufuor meet the Minority? The request should be declined because they are supposed to speak in Parliament, and if they keep boycotting sittings, what are they going to tell the President when they can’t use the forum they have?” he quizzed.

His comments come as the Minority prepares to formally present a petition at the Jubilee House today, Thursday, July 24, 2025, requesting a meeting with the President on what they describe as “issues of great public concern.”

In an earlier letter, the caucus emphasised the urgency of the matters they wish to raise, stating that they require “fair-minded leadership and definitive action” from the President.

However, Mr. Adu Asare, speaking on Asempa FM’s , insisted that the best avenue for such matters remains Parliament.

“These guys have a mandate given to them by the constitution of Ghana. So who has given them the mandate to seek an audience with the President? Over what? They have already been given a forum for dialogue and debate, but they use that to vilify and throw shade, and now they are seeking whichever forum. Is that Parliament?” he fumed.

USOPC Updates Policy On Transgender Women In Women’s Sports

0

Gene Sykes

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has revised its athlete safety policy to comply with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump earlier this year, which bars transgender women from competing in women’s sports.

In an update issued this week, the USOPC said it would, “continue to collaborate with stakeholders with oversight responsibilities, including the IOC, IPC, and national governing bodies, to ensure a fair and safe competition environment for women, consistent with Executive Order 14201 and the Ted Stevens Olympic & Amateur Sports Act.”

USOPC President, Gene Sykes, and CEO, Sarah Hirshland, referenced the order in a memo to the Team USA community, citing the organisation’s obligation to “comply with federal expectations” as a federally chartered body, ABC News reported. The committee did not respond to requests for additional comment.

Trump’s order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports”, was signed in February and directs federal agencies, including the Department of Justice and State Department, to enforce a nationwide ban on transgender girls and women competing in female sports. It also calls for denying visas to transgender women seeking to compete in the U.S. and instructs the State Department to pressure the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to revise its inclusive policies.

The policy is expected to impact a small number of athletes. NCAA officials recently told a Senate panel that fewer than 10 transgender athletes currently compete among the 530,000 students across its 1,100 member schools. Trump has also stated he would prohibit transgender athletes from competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Supporters argue the order protects fairness in women’s sports, while critics say it violates the rights of a marginalised minority.

50 Nigerians arrested at McCarthy Hills over cybercrime, human trafficking

0

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has apprehended about 50 Nigerian nationals in a targeted dawn operation at McCarthy Hills in the Ga South Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, following intelligence on suspected human trafficking and cybercrime activities in the area.

A statement issued on Thursday, July 24, 2025, and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration M. Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs, confirmed the arrests and outlined the basis for the operation.

According to the GIS, the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence regarding the illegal stay of some foreign nationals, with disturbing reports that several of them had been trafficked into the country.

The victims were allegedly coerced by their facilitators into engaging in cyber fraud activities.

“The Ghana Immigration Service in the early hours of today, July 24, 2025, conducted a special operation at McCarthy Hills in the Ga South Municipality. The operation was based on intelligence gathered on the illegal stay of some foreign nationals in the area, some of whom were trafficked into the country and forced into cyber fraud by their facilitators,” the statement read. “

Among those picked up was the landlord of the apartment where the alleged criminal activities were taking place. Authorities believe the property served as a base for the operations.

The Immigration Service assured the public that investigations are underway to establish the full scope of the activities and identify all individuals involved in the suspected trafficking and fraud network. It also noted that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

0

Versatile Ghana international, Jeffery Schlupp is focused on helping Norwich City to secure promotion to the English Premier League in the upcoming 2025/26 football season.

Schlupp joins the Championship outfit as a free agent following his departure from Palace at the expiration of his contract. He penned a one-year deal with the Canaries, keeping him at the club until summer 2026.

The experienced versatile Ghanaian player has been handed with the number 27 shirt ahead of the new season.

With his wealth of experience, the 32-year-old is expected to play a huge role for the club in their quest to secure Premier League promotion.

“Obviously, we want to have a great campaign, it’s no secret. The goal for everyone in this league is probably going to be the same, to make play-offs and try to get promoted” he said.

“You have to start somewhere, obviously I’m coming into somewhere new so it’s going to take a little bit of time to find my footing. Hopefully, I get to gel quickly with the players.”

Born in Hamburg, Germany, to Ghanaian parents, Schlupp moved to England at a young age and progressed through the academy at Leicester City, going on to make 150 appearances across all competitions.

The 32-year-old was part of the Foxes side that were crowned Premier League champions during the 2015/16 season, before making the switch to Crystal Palace in January 2017.

He would spend the next eight years with the Eagles, including time on loan at Scottish Premiership side Celtic last season, where he also lifted a league title.

Wendy Shay is a Ghanaian musician Wendy Shay is a Ghanaian musician

Ghanaian musician Wendy Asiamah Addo, popularly known as Wendy Shay, has debunked claims that she’s undergone a BBL.

Speaking in an interview on 3Music on July 23, 2025, Wendy stated that if anyone wants to have BBL, that’s their choice but for her, she’d rather use the money for donation.

“It’s no offense to people who have BBL. If you want to have BBL, that’s your choice. But personally, I would have used that money to donate to people” she said.

The Too Late hitmaker added that she’s in the music industry to sell her music and not her body, hence she doesn’t need BBL to look good.

“I don’t need it and like I said, I don’t even see the craze about it because when you die, it’s food for the maggots. That’s why I don’t focus on that. I’m here for music; I’m here to sell music and not my body.”

Prof Mills would be outraged with level of galamsey destruction, toxic politics – Charlotte Osei

0

Charlotte Osei is a former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission play videoCharlotte Osei is a former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission

The former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, has paid tribute to Ghana’s late former President, John Evans Atta Mills, stating that he would have been appalled by the extent of damage caused by illegal mining activities across the country.

Speaking at a memorial lecture on July 22, 2025, Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei stated that the late former President, John Evans Atta Mills, would have been infuriated by the lack of patriotism among some Ghanaians, particularly, citizens who are collaborating with others to cause destruction—not only to the country’s natural resources, but also to the future of its people.

This destruction, she emphasised, stems from the use of toxic chemicals by illegal miners, which continue to pollute water bodies across the country, posing long-term risks to both the environment and public health.

“I have wondered many times, would Prof be happy with us, with me, with the current state of Ghana? I think Prof would be outraged at how we are permitting Galamsey to damage our environments, our bodies, and our future,” she said.

Osei further stated that another issue which would have outraged Professor Mills is the increasingly toxic nature of Ghana’s political climate.

She condemned the way politics has devolved into public attacks, personal insults, and dangerously deep levels of partisanship.

“Prof would be sad at the level of lies and vitriol we held at each other daily in the media, especially online. The rabid partisanship would probably depress him,” Osei noted.

On the things that Professor Mills would have been pleased with, Osei shared that he would have appreciated Ghana’s strong democratic foundation, its peaceful elections, and the manner in which presidential opponents in the 2016 and 2024 elections conceded defeat gracefully—prioritising the nation’s interest over personal gain.

She added that Ghana’s historic achievement of electing its first female Vice President would have made Professor Mills extremely proud.

She believed he would have also taken great satisfaction in the ruling government’s policies.

“Prof would also be happy that his wife, his son, and his family are thriving – they are still standing. Prof would be pleased that many of his students and mentees are leading lights in business, in the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. I think Prof would be happy that his political party, the National Democratic Congress, that he made so many sacrifices for, is back in power and seems re-energised, refocused and with many young people involved in party activities,” she said.

“Prof would be particularly elated that we have a first female vice president. He would also be very happy that across the political divide, NPP, NDC, CPP, all of them, we have an influx of young men and women, professionals and academics, embracing public service and politics. He would be happy that in spite of the rabid partisanship, our citizens are still engaged and not passive, and our democracy is still growing. Finally, would be happy that other than a few pockets of unrest, Ghana is generally peaceful.

“Since his departure, there have been two very peaceful and uncontested changes of power democratically in 2016 and 2024. He would be happy that the leading losing candidates in both elections considered beautifully and put the nation ahead of self,” she added.

Airlines urged to plan ahead as aviation fuel shortage looms at KIA

Airlines have been urged to coordinate closely with fuel handlers before arrival Airlines have been urged to coordinate closely with fuel handlers before arrival

Airlines operating through Kotoka International Airport (KIA) have been advised to make prior refuelling arrangements with their service providers as Ghana braces for a potential shortage of aviation fuel.

The advisory, issued as a precautionary measure, aims to minimise operational delays and ensure flight safety amid concerns that limited fuel supply could disrupt schedules in the coming days.

Airlines have been urged to coordinate closely with fuel handlers before arrival to avoid last-minute complications.

According to citinewsroom.com report, the anticipated shortage stems from supply challenges within the Joint User Hydrant Installation (JUHI) system at KIA. The situation has forced the two main suppliers of aviation fuel, TotalEnergies and Shell, to suspend refuelling services indefinitely.

The suspension, which took immediate effect, affects both ad-hoc or spot flights and existing fuel orders, raising concerns over possible disruptions to scheduled airline operations.

Management of Kotoka International Airport has yet to officially comment on the matter or outline contingency measures to address the fuel shortfall.

However, sources indicate that the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), which regulates fuel supply and distribution at the airport, is in active talks with stakeholders to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation.

Trump ‘caught’ on video pocketing Madueke’s medal at Club World Cup trophy presentation

Trump was seen putting one of the medals inside his pocket Trump was seen putting one of the medals inside his pocket

Chelsea’s 2025 Club World Cup celebrations in the United States have taken on an amusing twist after a video emerged showing US President Donald Trump putting Noni Madueke’s winners’ medal in his pocket during the trophy ceremony.

The moment came after Chelsea’s convincing 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final, which sealed their second Club World Cup title.

Trump, who was invited to present the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James, stayed on the podium to congratulate the players and hand out medals, but with Madueke having left the squad early, there was one medal left over.

In the viral clip, Trump is seen folding the lace of the unclaimed medal before slipping it neatly into his suit pocket as the Blues celebrated around him.

Chelsea defender, Marc Cucurella, couldn’t resist poking fun at the situation during a question and answer session at his football academy in Spain.

Asked about Madueke’s decision to leave the team’s camp early to finalise his £52 million move to Arsenal, Cucurella said he thought it was a mistake to miss out on lifting the trophy with his teammates.

“I think he missed a good opportunity. He wasn’t starting, but with everything about his transfer, he could have delayed it a day or two, it wouldn’t have cost him anything,” he said.

He then joked about Trump’s unexpected souvenir:

“He [Trump] put it in his pocket. He has it there in the White House, very well placed,” he added.

Madueke, 23, played in five of Chelsea’s six matches on their run to the final but returned to England early to complete his move to Arsenal, leaving his winners’ medal behind on the podium.

Ghana’s Movie Industry Is Not A Waste Of Time – George Quaye

0

George Quaye

Media personality and playwright, George Quaye, says Ghanaians should stop comparing the local movie industry to Nigeria’s Nollywood, adding that Ghana’s film sector is not a waste of time.

Speaking on United over the weekend, Quaye said Nigeria’s success is due to its large population and high demand for movies, but that doesn’t mean Ghana lacks talent or potential.

“We need to understand that Nigeria has a bigger market. Even when they produce a few movies, the demand is high,” he explained. “There’s no need to argue or compare.”

His comments came after actress Gloria Sarfo expressed frustration on social media. She said many talented Ghanaian actors feel stuck and wasted, while in Nigeria, movies are being shot every day.

But Quaye disagreed, saying Ghanaian actors are often invited to act in Nigerian films, which shows they have something special.

“If someone from Nigeria calls a Ghanaian to act, despite all the talent they have there, it means we offer something unique,” he said.

He encouraged Ghanaian filmmakers and actors to believe in their industry and focus on what works for them.

“I understand Gloria’s concerns, but we should be proud of what we have. The Ghana movie industry is never a waste of time,” he added.

Quaye also advised actors to adapt to the changing industry, saying many have moved into new roles like hosting or influencing.

“Journalism is Not for Fame” – Francisca Kakra Forson inspires young journalists at AFRIMASS session

0

Renowned journalist and lawyer, Francisca Kakra Forson, on Saturday, July 13, 2025, led an engaging virtual session with over 50 participants as part of the AFRIMASS Newsroom Business Initiative Program’s ongoing cohort series.

Held via the Convay video conferencing platform, the session focused on the theme “Sustainable Journalism and Career Pathways.” Forson, who also serves as Lead Strategist at Platinum PR, shared practical insights on building a meaningful career in journalism and navigating the challenges of the evolving media landscape.

In her delivery, she emphasized that journalism should be driven by purpose, not popularity. “If you’re in it for fame or money, then you need to rethink whether you’re in the right profession,” she firmly stated.

Forson, who is also a co-host on the Citi Breakfast Show, explained that sustainable journalism is rooted in the principles of sustainable development, serving the present without compromising future generations. According to her, journalism must serve as a tool for national transformation, holding power to account and telling stories that create impact.

Touching on threats to journalism, she mentioned state capture, declining revenues, clickbait culture, and censorship, calling for a fair balance between profit-making and quality journalism. She also urged journalists to practice informed communication, noting that “relevance and factual accuracy” are what distinguish credible journalism today.

Citing the example of journalist Erastus Asare Donkor’s reporting on illegal mining, she praised in-depth storytelling that goes beyond surface narratives. She described good journalism as being like ‘scuba diving gear’ designed for depth, clarity, and purpose.

She also acknowledged the rise of AI in journalism, highlighting its benefits in writing, editing, and language translation, while warning of risks such as misinformation and impersonation.

Forson concluded by encouraging participants to explore diverse career paths, including content creation, public relations, and journalism, but always with ethics and impact at the core.

The six individuals are facing trial over a total of 25 charges, including extortion by a public officer, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering.

The charges stem from an alleged large-scale extortion and money laundering scheme involving more than GH₵280 million. Collectively, they face 25 counts, including extortion by a public officer, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid was required to post GH¢2 million bail with two sureties, each earning a net monthly salary of at least GH¢5,000, and to report to the OSP biweekly.

The case has been adjourned to 26 August 2025 for substantive hearings.

Coca-Cola to launch Cane Sugar Coke in the US, potentially boosting Ghana’s sugar economy

The Coca-Cola Company has confirmed plans to launch a version of its signature drink made with cane sugar. The company said in its earnings report released Tuesday that the new drink with cane sugar will be available in the United States later this year.

This new “offering made with cane sugar” is “part of its ongoing innovation agenda” and “is designed to complement the company’s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences,” the company said in its news release.

Coca-Cola produced for the U.S. market is typically sweetened with corn syrup. However, the company uses cane sugar in some other countries, including Mexico and various European countries. In the United States, Coca-Cola made with cane sugar is colloquially known as “Mexican Coke” as it’s often imported from the United States’ southern neighbor.

Coca-Cola already uses cane sugar in the company’s tea, lemonade, coffee and Vitamin Water offerings, CEO James Quincey said on an earnings call Tuesday morning.

“I think that it will be an enduring option for consumers,” he added. “We are definitely looking to use the whole toolkit of available sweetening options where there are consumer preferences.”

Trump’s Influence and Past Comments

The announcement comes just days after President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he had been “speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so. I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”  Coca-Cola did not immediately confirm the news.

This isn’t President Trump’s first public comment on Coca-Cola’s ingredients. Back in 2012, as a businessman, Trump “posted that the company was ‘not happy’ with him, but conceded, ‘That’s okay, I’ll still keep drinking that garbage.’

The latest statement , however, makes it clear that while Coca-Cola is expanding its product range, the iconic taste of its original cola, sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, will remain unchanged. This suggests a strategic move by the company to cater to diverse consumer preferences without altering the core product that has defined its brand for decades.

The Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again initiative, named for the social movement aligned with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been urging food companies to modify their formulations to remove ingredients like artificial dyes.

Identical Metabolic Effects, Differing Economic Impacts

Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, stated that “both high fructose corn syrup and cane sugar are about 50% fructose, 50% glucose, and have identical metabolic effects.”

That means, both sweeteners can equally raise the risk for obesity, diabetes, high triglycerides and blood pressure. Both provide the same amount of calories, but the body processes them differently.

The CEO of the Corn Refiners Association last week noted that “replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar doesn’t make sense” given Trump’s support of American farmers.

“Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would cost thousands of American food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and boost imports of foreign sugar, all with no nutritional benefit,” he added in a statement.

Shifting Tastes and Market Demand

The beverage giant’s decision to launch a new cane sugar-sweetened Coke in the US, while maintaining its high-fructose corn syrup flagship, highlights evolving consumer preferences and global industry trends that could directly affect countries like Ghana.

In many parts of the world, including Ghana, consumers are increasingly health-conscious and demand more “natural” ingredients and alternatives to high-fructose corn syrup.

While local Coca-Cola products already use different sweetener formulations based on regional preferences and ingredient availability, this development in the U.S. could influence future product innovations and ingredient sourcing decisions globally. Ghanaian consumers, who have a strong appreciation for cane sugar in their traditional foods and drinks, might see this as a positive sign of a shift towards preferred sweeteners.

Notably, Ghana has been actively addressing sugar consumption. The Government of Ghana aims to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). “By 2030, the Government of Ghana will reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages from 32.4 g/d to 15 g/d,” according to the Global Nutrition Report. This policy objective demonstrates a local commitment to healthier dietary habits, making Coca-Cola’s global moves highly relevant.

Impact on Local Businesses and Agriculture

Ghana’s economy is significantly influenced by agricultural production, including sugar. Any major shift in sweetener trends, even if initiated in a distant market like the US, can have a domino effect. If the demand for cane sugar in large markets like the US grows, it could potentially impact global sugar prices or even open up new export opportunities for sugar-producing countries.

Ghana’s sugarcane production was about 156.80 thousand metric tons in 2023, with a forecasted increase. However, Ghana also imports a significant amount of sugar. In 2020, “Ghana imported US$151 million worth of raw sugar alone,” ranking as the 45th largest importer globally. Ghanaian businesses involved in sugar processing or those considering investment in the sugar industry should closely monitor these international market signals. A broader preference for cane sugar globally could, in the long term, stimulate local production and reduce reliance on imported alternatives. The revitalization of factories like the Komenda Sugar Factory, though facing challenges, reflects Ghana’s strategic interest in self-sufficiency in sugar production.

Health Reckoning and Ingredient Transparency in Ghana

The public discourse surrounding Coca-Cola’s ingredients, partly fueled by high-profile individuals like President Trump, shows a growing demand for transparency in food and beverage production. Consumers worldwide, including those in Ghana, are becoming more informed about what they consume. This trend pushes companies to consider not just taste but also the perceived health benefits and naturalness of their ingredients.

For Ghanaian food and beverage companies, this highlights the importance of understanding consumer preferences for sweeteners. They must be prepared to adapt product offerings to meet evolving health consciousness. It’s a reminder that what starts as a preference in one major market can quickly become a global expectation. Ghana’s own 20% tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, approved by Parliament and signed into law in 2023, is a testament to this global trend.

As Professor Amos Laar of the University of Ghana stated, “the Government of Ghana has manifold opportunities and a responsibility to use public health policies to protect, promote and assure the health of its citizens. One such opportunity is the enactment and implementation of this tax.” This policy directly reflects a proactive approach to public health, a sentiment that resonates with the broader discussion around sweetener choices in beverage production.

Shatta Bandle and Third Wife Spark Social Media Frenzy With Romantic Getaway

News Hub Creator1d

Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Bandle and his third wife, Abena Serwaa, have set social media abuzz after sharing loved-up moments from their romantic vacation. The couple’s affectionate display in a new viral video has reignited conversations about polygamous relationships in modern Ghana.

Fans reacted strongly to the post, with comments pouring in at over 15,000 within six hours. While many praised the couple’s chemistry, others questioned the artist’s ability to balance three marriages.

“Love isn’t a competition. Each of my wives gets my full attention when we’re together,” Bandle responded to critics via Instagram Stories.

This marks the first public outing with Serwaa since their controversial 2024 wedding, which drew mixed reactions due to the musician’s existing marriages. Relationship expert Dr. Grace Ampofo analyzes:

“Bandle’s open polygamy challenges Ghanaian societal norms but reflects a growing trend among affluent men. The key is transparency and equal care.”

Meanwhile, sources close to the artist reveal he maintains separate homes for each wife and follows a strict rotation schedule. His first two wives reportedly approved this vacation.

As the video continues circulating, it’s sparking broader debates about modern marriage structures in Ghana’s evolving social landscape.

Six Ways to Wear A Shirt Dress Like You Know What You’re Doing

0

You may think a shirt dress is boring, but that’s probably because you don’t know how to style it. It is a versatile outfit that shines everywhere it goes.  It’s classy enough to work alone and flexible enough to be styled for various occasions like casual errands, work, and dates without feeling out of place.

It’s the kind of outfit that works on its own, but also serves as the perfect piece of clothing to layer over or under outfits creatively.  A shirt dress can give you chic layers, transform depending on accessories, and fit into almost any mood, from “casual errand run” to “I own this building.”

Like a good wine, you’d find that a shirt dress pairs well with many things you already have in your wardrobe. Here are a few simple, yet smart, ways to style a shirt dress:

1. With Chunky Sneakers: Casual, but not in a lazy way

When you need to give a relaxed, soft babe vibe that won’t leave you overheating in the afternoon or cold in the evening, lean into simplicity. A pair of chunky-heeled sneakers, a sling bag, and minimal jewelry will give you the cool-babe look.

You can swap sneakers for slip-on loafers or sleek slippers, but if you’re going with open-toe options, don’t forget the little things, like an anklets or toe rings, give the rich auntie vibe (it’s easy to look way too casual in slippers).

Shopping tip: Seek out crisp cotton or linen shirt dresses to pull off this look. They hold shape and feel breezy all day.

This look is perfect for hanging out with friends, a beach outing, brunch, or weekend wandering in Ikeja City Mall (or any mall).

Price: ₦3,500. Where to Buy: Shop Tees and_More.

2. With Heels and Belt: Office-ready, but too cool to be “profesh”

Source: Pinterest.

For those outside of Gen Z reading this, “profesh” is a cool way of saying “professional.” Styling a dress shirt with heels suits the Nigerian workplace, being polished enough for meetings yet comfortable for any event or occasion.

To style this shirt dress, you can cinch your waist with a sharp belt at the waist (fabric or leather) to add shape. Additionally, a leather tote bag and stud earrings will instantly give you the clean, IT girl look.

3. With a Knit Vest: Chic, Classy, and Bougie

This is for the days when you want your outfit to have more depth and interest. Layer a cropped knit vest, a corset, or even a sleeveless tailored vest over your shirt dress for texture and contrast.

You can either layer a cropped or long cable-knit vest from ShopLunab at a sales price of ₦39,000, a tailored cotton vest, a lightweight sweater, or a corset.

With a Knit Vest

You can finish the look with boots or sneakers, depending on your vibe, but we’re partial to strappy heels or pointed flats if you want something chic but comfy. Gold jewelry and a structured mini bag finish up the look.

Quick Tips To Improve Your Look:

  • Roll sleeves up to the elbow for a laid‑back feel or leave them down and buttoned to look polished.
  • If your shirt dress is longer, consider ankle‑strap heels or pointed flats to make your legs look longer. If it’s short, balance volume on top with a structured layer like a vest, corset, or waist pouch.
  • Crisp cotton or linen feels airy and casual; silk blends or satiny fabrics read more formal or nighttime. Bold stripes and florals can be dressed up or down depending on your accessories.

4. With Sandals: Relaxed and Comfy

A dress shirt may seem too simple to pair with sandals, but when styled with appropriate accessories and worn with the right aura, it looks just as great as other styling options.

You can wear a wide-brimmed hat, facecap or a silk scarf in the afternoon; a simple pearl choker; and a leather or woven tote bag. This type of style may fit casual errands, beach outings, and travels.

5. Street Style: Cool and Androgynous

Street Style

For a street shirt dress style, anything streetstyle goes. The basic things you need to put the look together are a pair of chunky sneakers, a face cap, an oversized sunshade, and some street-worthy jewellery.

You can level up and layer it with a knitted vest or a waist bag from Jumia at the price of ₦6,500 for an even edgier look.

Price: ₦14,999. Where to Buy: Shop Amary.

6. With a Strapless Mini Dress

With a Strapless Mini Dress

This is the baddest IT girl look every fashion lover dreams of recreating. It’s quite easy to put this together; here’s how to go about it:

Layer a tailored, strapless, mini-flare mini dress on top of a shirt dress. To give the look a sexy edge, pair it with pantyhose and stilettos.

Price: ₦5,500. Where to Buy: Shop Brief Essentials.

Apart from this mini dress, you can also layer a dress shirt under other types of dresses, like a pinafore dress and A-line gowns.

Ejisu MP Decries Deplorable Roads

0

Kwabena Boateng

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, has appealed to government to urgently fix the deteriorating roads in his constituency, warning of dire consequences for livelihoods, security, and economic activity.

Making a statement on the floor of Parliament, the MP painted a grim picture of the road conditions across several communities in Ejisu, including Onwe, Kokobra, Achiase, Akokoamong, Kwaso, Ekyem, and Asieninpong.

He described the situation as a looming crisis made worse by the rainy season, which has rendered many of the roads impassable.

“These roads are lifelines that connect our people to schools, hospitals, markets, and their workplaces. I do not rise to lay blame. I rise to call this House to conscience – to remind ourselves that governance is a continuum, and its benefits must reach the people of Ejisu too,” Mr. Boateng stated.

The MP recounted that construction had begun on several roads in the municipality over a year ago. Key works such as the construction of bridges and gutters along the Ejisu-Onwe and Kokobra-Achiase roads offered residents hope of better infrastructure.

However, those hopes are quickly fading, as construction has stalled and contractors have vacated project sites, removing their machinery and halting progress altogether.

“The situation has worsened with the rains. These roads have become death traps – pregnant women, school children, farmers, and traders are all in danger. Vehicles get stuck, transport grinds to a halt, produce spoils, and the local economy bleeds quietly,” he lamented.

Mr. Boateng revealed that drivers in the area have become frequent victims of armed robbery, as the poor state of the roads forces them to slow down, making them easy targets for criminals lurking in the dark.

He added that many commercial drivers have stopped using the roads entirely, as the terrible conditions continue to damage their vehicles and increase maintenance costs.

“It is very unsettling to learn of robberies on these roads, and it’s even more troubling that many drivers now abandon them due to constant breakdowns and the high cost of spare parts,” he told the House.

The MP recalled a recent protest by the Concerned Drivers Association of Ejisu on July 7, 2025, which presented a petition to him and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), expressing their anger over the continued neglect of their roads.

According to him, they lamented the financial burden of frequent repairs and the health hazards caused by dust and poor road surfaces.

“The drivers can no longer bear the cost of spare parts. They are tired of the breakdowns, the dust, the robberies, and the lack of action,” Mr. Boateng stressed, adding, “Their demonstration was not just a protest. It was a desperate cry for help.”

The MP called on the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, to treat the issue of roads in Ejisu with urgency and prioritise their rehabilitation in the upcoming budget cycle.

Presidential staffer and National Coordinator of the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar, has outlined three key goals he hopes to achieve before the end of his tenure.

According to him, these are legacies he wants to leave behind to support the growth of Ghana’s creative industry.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Showbiz 360, the veteran musician and principal advocate for creatives said he wants to see a second National Theatre built in Kumasi.

He also indicated that he anticipates that the industry can boast of a good number of fully equipped record labels capable of projecting Ghanaian music internationally.

Third on his wish-list, Rex Omar, looks forward to being able to nurture Ghana’s movie industry to have a world-class movie studio that meets Hollywood standards.

“I want to see a second National Theatre being built in Kumasi. I want to see about one, two or three stable record label company, well-resourced, that are competing to export Ghanaian music. I want to see a Hollywood standard studio built in Ghana so as to be able to draw global attention to Ghana to help our film industry,” he said.

Asantehene’s wife and I may not have gotten our LLMs if not for Atta Mills

Charlotte Osei (L) has credited her LLM to the late Professor John Atta Mills (R) Charlotte Osei (L) has credited her LLM to the late Professor John Atta Mills (R)

Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, has revealed how the late President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills played a pivotal role in supporting her and Lady Julia, the wife of the Asantehene to attain their Master of Law (LLM) degrees.

Speaking at the 13th John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Lecture on July 22, 2025, Charlotte Osei noted that had it not been for the late former president’s intervention, she and Lady Julia, the wife of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, may not have been able to pursue their Master of Law (LLM) degrees.

According to Osei, the late former President Mills had a deep commitment to mentoring young women in the legal profession.

He not only encouraged them to pursue their ambitions but also actively worked to address the barriers they encountered along the way.

“Prof Mills was particularly committed to mentoring young women in law, recognising both the barriers we faced and the immense potential we represented. As Lady Julia recounted, she sat with two young women, myself included, who likely would not have earned our Master of Laws degrees without his support,” the former EC Chairperson said.

“He was a constant advocate for young students seeking graduate opportunities. Thanks to Prof’s recommendation, one of my classmates was accepted to the London School of Economics, his alma mater, for an LLM. Upon returning to Ghana, Prof helped him secure his first job at the Ghana Stock Exchange,” she added.

Is the economy doing well under Mahama? What the data shows

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson is the Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson is the Minister of Finance

GhanaWeb Feature by Ishmael Batoma

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, in accordance with Article 179 of the 1992 Constitution and Section 21 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), will be presenting the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Policy Review at Parliament on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

In addition to announcing adjustments to the main 2025 Budget for the remainder of the year, the finance minister is expected to give an update on the country’s economic performance.

The finance minister and President John Dramani Mahama have gained plaudits from a faction of the public on the performance of the economy.

Some Ghanaians, mostly proponents of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), have, however, maintained that Ghanaians are worse off than they were during the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

But who is right? Before Dr Ato Forson’s presentation, GhanaWeb’s data journalist, Ishmael Batoma, examines the economic performance of the nearly 8-month-old John Dramani Mahama administration.

This article assesses the performance of major economic variables, plus other key goods and services, by comparing them to what the current government inherited.

Inflation:

The John Dramani Mahama government inherited an inflation rate of approximately 24% – meaning the price of goods and services on average increased by 24%.

The inflation rate increased slightly to 28.30% in the first month of the Mahama administration but has dropped every month to 13.70% as at June 2025 – a more than 10 percentage point drop.

Over the same period, food inflation (the increase in the price of food items) dropped more drastically compared to non-food inflation (the increase in the price of rent, transport, among others).

While food inflation dropped from nearly 28% to over 16% (about 12 percentage points), non-food inflation dropped from a little over 20% to 11% (approximately 9 percentage points).

Depreciation of the cedi:

One of the main economic challenges that was observed during the former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government was the depreciation of the country’s currency, the Ghana cedi.

After seeing some gains in the last months of the Akufo-Addo government, the cedi depreciated (lost value) in the first two months of the Mahama government against its major trading currencies, the United States dollar, the British pound and euro.

From February 2025 to the end of April 2025, the cedi stabilised against the major trading currencies, especially the dollar, before significantly appreciating (gaining value).

The Mahama government inherited an exchange rate of GH¢14.7 to the dollar ($1 was selling for GH¢14.7).

As of June 2025, the rate was GH¢10.31 to the dollar – a more than 48% drop.

A pound was selling at GH¢18.69 as of the end of December 2024. From then, it dropped by about 32% to sell at GH¢14 at the end of June 2025.

The euro also saw a similar drop in value against the cedi, depreciating from about GH¢15 to the euro to about GH¢12.

Interest rate:

The Mahama government inherited an interbank weighted interest rate of about 27% from the Akufo-Addo administration.

The rate as at May 2025 is still 27%, meaning there has not been any drop in the cost of borrowing.

The monetary policy rate of 27% inherited by the Mahama government has increased to 28%.

This implies that businesses still have to borrow at a high interest rate in the first seven months of the Mahama government.

Electricity and water tariffs:

Electricity and water tariffs have increased two times already under the John Dramani Mahama government.

In May, electricity tariffs increased by nearly 15% while water tariffs increased by over 4%.

Again, in June 2025, electricity tariffs were increased by over 2% while water tariffs saw no increase.

Price of fuel:

The continuous increase in the price of fuel products was also one of the main challenges in the Akufo-Addo administration.

Petrol was selling at GH¢14.5 per litre and diesel at GH¢14.6 per litre as at the end of December 2024.

As at the end of June 2025, a litre of petrol was selling at GH¢11.77, a more than 23% drop from the price in December 2024.

The price of diesel also dropped by approximately 17%, from GH¢14.6 per litre at the end of December 2024 to GH¢12.5 per litre at the end of June 2025.
