Fidelity Bank Champions Youth Entrepreneurship, Gender Inclusion

Kwabena Boateng

Deputy Managing Director in charge of Wholesale Banking at Fidelity Bank Ghana, Kwabena Boateng, has reaffirmed the bank’s position as a leading partner in youth-driven enterprise development and inclusive financing during the 2025 Ghana-European Union Business Forum.

The event, was held under the theme: “Fostering Collaboration Between Ghanaian and European Entrepreneurial Ecosystems – Investing in Young Businesses in Ghana under the EU Global Gateway Strategy.”

Mr. Boateng, in a high-level panel discussion focused on deepening cooperation between financial institutions, Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), and entrepreneurial support networks, underscored Fidelity Bank’s deep-rooted dedication to supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and young entrepreneurs.

“Fidelity Bank is truly committed to supporting SMEs and young entrepreneurs,” Mr. Boateng stated. “Our collaboration with the EU and partners like the Netherlands Enterprise Agency on initiatives such as the Orange Corners Innovation Fund has been instrumental.”

He said the Orange Market, serves as a curated marketplace where young entrepreneurs can showcase and sell their products to the public, closing the loop between ideation and commercialisation.

Beyond the EU partnership, Mr. Boateng also highlighted Fidelity Bank’s significant collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, particularly within the agri-sector.

“With the Mastercard Foundation, we’ve been able to roll out approximately GHS 57 million in funding over the past 18 months, directly contributing to the creation of 12,000 new jobs and sustaining an impressive 11,300 existing jobs,” he revealed. “This support has also reached over 21,000 smallholder farmers, demonstrating our broad impact across vital sectors.”

Mr. Boateng affirmed Fidelity Bank’s intentional measures to ensure that EU and DFI support genuinely reaches women-led enterprises.

“Supporting women has to be intentional,” he emphasised. “We identify sectors with a high concentration of women entrepreneurs, such as fashion, food processing, and small-scale manufacturing, and specifically target them through programs like the Orange Corners with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Our Bridge-in-Agriculture program with Mastercard is also specifically designed to target women aged 18 to 35 years, and businesses that employ youth and women.”

He further detailed concrete steps taken to reduce barriers for women entrepreneurs: “Recognizing the high cost of borrowing, our partnerships, like the Orange Corners, offer rates as low as 5%, and Mastercard’s program offers 7%. Critically, we have also significantly reduced collateral requirements to as low as 20%, ensuring that women entrepreneurs, who often lack traditional collateral, can still access the capital they need.”

The well-known Nollywood actor Kelvin Obase, also known as Obatidey, has disclosed that he experienced one of the most heartbreaking days of his career as an actor. He has also stated that the tragedy that occurred to her sister’s husband resulted in the deaths of twenty-one others.

During an interview, he revealed in a video that was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of Oyinmomo TV that he was working on a movie set when his sister informed him that her husband had been involved in an accident that resulted in the deaths of twenty-one people.

“One of the saddest days of my life was when we were about to make a movie and I was informed about what happened to my sister’s husband. What happened to my sister’s husband was a tragic event. While I was working on a movie set, my sister informed me that her husband had been involved in an accident that resulted in the deaths of twenty-one individuals. Because I was unable to take my mind off of what had occurred, I questioned whether or not I would be able to continue playing my role on the set of the movie. At first, I did not disclose this information to any of my coworkers; however, after spending a day on the set of the movie, I informed the director of the film, and I informed him that I would be continuing to play the character that I had been playing on the set. Thankfully, the accident did not result in the death of my sister’s husband, and he is doing better than ever at the moment,” he stated.

Let’s Not Repeat The Mistakes Of The NPP, Let’s Reset With Purpose – Goosie Tanoh

0

To mark the 46th anniversary of the June 4th Uprising, a founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Goosie Tanoh has shared a timely reflection on the state of our politics and the path ahead.

He describes the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in 2024 as a direct rejection of arrogance, corruption, and leadership disconnected from the people, and cautions the NDC not to fall into the same pattern.

Govt releases GH¢987m Common Fund to assemblies

0

The government has disbursed GH¢987.96 million to the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) as the first quarter allocation for 2025, the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has told Parliament.

The disbursement, he said, underscored the government’s renewed commitment to fiscal decentralisation and the empowerment of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.

He stated further that the amount had already been transferred from the Consolidated Fund to the DACF Administrator and would be governed by strict Cabinet-approved guidelines to ensure transparency and alignment with national development goals.

Breakdown

Briefing parliament on the development yesterday, Dr Forson, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, disclosed that Cabinet had approved detailed expenditure categories to guide how the disbursed funds were spent at the local level.

He explained that 25 per cent of the total amount was earmarked for the design and construction of a model market in each district while health infrastructure would receive 10 per cent of the funds, with a minimum of two health compounds to be constructed in rural assemblies.

Dr Forson also said another 10 per cent had been set aside for educational infrastructure, specifically the construction of a kindergarten block, a primary school block and a junior high school block in each district.

“Mr Speaker, again, we have earmarked 10 per cent of the amount that will be sent directly to the Assemblies for the provision of school furniture,” he added.

In the area of water and sanitation, the Finance Minister said 10 per cent was allocated to provide potable water, including at least 10 boreholes in rural assemblies.

LatexFoamPromo

Additionally, he said 20 per cent of the released amount was to be used to complete abandoned and uncompleted legacy projects initiated by the former regional development authorities — Middle Belt, Coastal and Northern Development Authorities.

Dr Forson, however, stated that administrative costs, monitoring and evaluation had been capped at five per cent to prevent the misuse of funds.

Accountability

The Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam legislator stated that under the new directive, the Administrator of the DACF was mandated to ensure that not less than 80 per cent of the amount was transferred directly to the district assemblies without fail.

He added that assemblies were required to submit detailed expenditure returns to the Ministry of Finance before subsequent quarterly disbursements were made.

Dr Forson said the release of funds marked a turning point after years of erratic disbursements that undermined the effectiveness of local governments.

He pointed out that between 2017 and 2024, only 40 per cent to 50 per cent of DACF allocations were actually transferred to the assemblies, leaving MMDAs under-resourced and unable to meet the development needs of their communities.

The current administration, he assured, was determined to reverse that trend.

“We are committed to adequately resourcing MMDAs and ensuring that effective and accountable utilisation of these resources is maintained at all times,” he said.

Revitalising local development

Dr Forson said the total DACF allocation for the year 2025 stood at GH¢7.57 billion, out of which GH¢6.1 billion — representing 80 per cent — would be disbursed directly to the assemblies to spur local economic activities.

“Mr Speaker, in view of that, every District Assembly will receive a minimum of GH¢25 million this year,” he explained.

“Let us work together to strengthen the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and position them as engines of local economic development,” Dr Forson urged his fellow MPs.

He further encouraged MPs to monitor the implementation of the spending guidelines within their constituencies to ensure that the intended development outcomes were achieved.

Goosie Tanoh urges NDC to uphold probity and accountability to sustain leadership for the next 50 years

0

Presidential Advisor and veteran National Democratic Congress (NDC) comrade, Goosie Tanoh, has called on the party to recommit to the founding principles of probity, accountability, and participatory democracy, stressing that these values are essential if the NDC is to offer credible and lasting leadership for the next 50 years.

Delivering a compelling message to mark the 46th anniversary of the June 4 uprising, Tanoh warned that without a genuine internal reset, the NDC risks drifting towards the same political elitism and disregard for public trust that led to the downfall of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“We must not waste this moment squabbling for personal advantage and tearing the state machine apart. We must build our party now,” he cautioned.

According to him, the recent electoral defeat of the NPP is a strong public statement against corruption, arrogance, and governance disconnected from the people. He insisted that the NDC must not repeat those mistakes, especially now that Ghanaians have entrusted them with another opportunity to lead.

“The state is not to be governed for private gains but for collective upliftment… The people will only trust us if we are immersed in their needs and aspirations and if we fight alongside them for dignity and prosperity.”

Tanoh called for an internal review and restructuring of the party’s governance structures to ensure accountability from the grassroots up. “We have largely become an electoral machine with power concentrated at the top… Our branches are mostly dead or shells mobilised only for elections.”

He proposed a national consultative process within the NDC, leading to an ideological and constitutional reset convention over the next 18 months — a process he believes is critical to building a truly people-driven party.

“It is time for a new consultative process to make the NDC a vehicle that can provide our country with leadership for the next 50 years and beyond.”

Tanoh further urged the NDC to learn from the June 4 tradition, which he described as a powerful reminder that political legitimacy comes from service, transparency, and accountability, not mere electoral victory or constitutional authority.

“Power belongs to the people; we are merely stewards… If we have not delivered justice and encouraged democratic participation, then we ought not to be surprised by sudden eruptions of chaos.”

He endorsed President Mahama’s current reset agenda as a positive first step but stressed that the party must mirror those efforts internally to avoid slipping into the very culture it has long criticised.

“President Mahama has taken the first step at the level of the State machine and appointees. The Party must also take the opportunity to reset now.”

Goosie Tanoh’s statement is not just a commemoration of the June 4 legacy — it is a bold call to action. A reminder that probity and accountability are not slogans, but survival strategies for political parties seeking enduring relevance.

“This is not about rhetoric. We need structural responses now.”

As the NDC looks to the future, its message stands as both a warning and a roadmap: if the party holds true to its founding values, it can inspire, unite, and lead Ghana forward — not just for one term, but for generations.

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) has launched the Biannual Environment, Science and Technology (BEST) Forum on June 3, 2025, in Accra.

The BEST is meant to be a platform that connects academia, research institutions, industry, and investors to drive environmental innovation and accelerate the commercialisation of research.

Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, during the launch said that the BEST forum creates a conducive environment that will allow collaboration between researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors and also allow for communication between different ministries, institutions and agencies.

“The fact that institutions and ministries do not talk to each other, so we are not just looking at coming out with this forum, it is an opportunity to create a platform where ministries and agencies can be communicating between and among themselves. We must strive to replicate the success stories. To do so, we need to foster an environment that fosters collaboration among researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors,” he explained.

He also added that they are focused on making sure that research institutions are financially independent. Again, he said robust institutional and policy frameworks to promote research commercialisation, such as the creation of the Ghana Innovation and Research Commercialisation Centre has been established

“We are focused on creating platforms where the research institutions are independent financially. Dear Partners, as a ministry responsible for environment, science and technology, we are putting in a lot to build a robust institutional and policy framework to promote research commercialisation. We have created the Ghana Innovation and Research Commercialisation Centre (GRICC),” he explained.

He also highlighted what the GRICC is about, saying GRICC is expected to transform the Ghana innovation agency with the core mission to contribute to advancing innovation and sustainable development by supporting innovative research and commercialisation.

Bear with the government, pay the ¢1.00 levy on fuel to forestall dumsor

The Gallant Cadres of the National Democratic Congress have issued a statement appealing to Ghanaians to bear with the government by paying the Gh¢1.00 fuel levy to help alleviate the energy sector burden.

In a release issued and signed on Wednesday, 4th June, 2025, by Mr. E. A. Sarpong, popularly called Father Casford, it averred that, judging from the current debilitating energy sector debt, “it’s the most rational decision by government to impose Gh¢1.00 levy on each litre of fuel purchased to help us settle our debt”, they stated.

The Cadres contend that Gh¢1.00 fuel levy is not the same as 1% E-Levy. The current increment on fuel is an insignificant constant of Gh¢1.00, while 1% E-Levy varies in the amount charged, depending on the amount of the transaction involved. “In percentage terms, as the amount increases, the percentage-based deduction grows, while Gh¢1 remains an insignificant constant,” the release emphasized.

In a bid to placate the fears of Ghanaians, they revealed that the recent gains of the Ghanaian currency against major trading currencies, arising from the prudent management of the economy, would mitigate the increase in fuel prices.

The release concluded by urging all Ghanaians, as a patriotic duty, to support the government during these difficult times to better the lot of Ghanaians in the near future. “We, the Gallant Cadres of the NDC, wish to appeal to all well-meaning Ghanaians to bear with the government as it tries to navigate this difficult labyrinth of energy sector debt,” the release ended.

We Welcome The GH1 Levy On Every Liter of Fuel to Offset Disturbing Energy Sector Debt.

The decision by the Government of Ghana to impose a Gh 1. 00 on every litre of petrol purchased at the pumps is a rational one which in the long run help us settle the debilitating Energy Sector debt overhang.

Truth is that Ghc1.00 is not the same as 1%. Deducting Gh 1.00 from Gh1,000 = Gh 999, and 1% of Gh 1,000 is Gh 10.00, thus giving you ¢990. In percentage terms, as the amount increases, the percentage-based deduction grows, while 1ghc remains an insignificant constant. This is nothing like E-levy! The Energy-sector debt left by NPP government can be described be crazily humungous!!

It is important to note that, the ¢1.00 increase in the Energy Sector Levy(ESLA) Act, has become necessary due to mounting and unsustainable debt accrued in the energy sector over the previous 8 years under the NPP.

A financing shortfall of about $3.7billion (over GH¢40 billion) hangs over the sector with an estimated $ 1.2 billion (GH¢13 billion) needed annually to purchase liquid fuels to power thermal plants for energy generation. This amount is not factored into the pricing of electricity, making it unsustainable going forward.

The GH¢1 increase in ESLA means that an amount of GH¢5.7 billion will be realised every year to ease the liquid fuel burden. If liquid fuel is factored into electricity pricing, it will result in a 50% increase in electricity prices making the ESLA increment a better and cheaper alternative.

The timing of the increase means that fuel prices will still remain lower than in the May pricing window due to the continuous appreciation of the cedi against the dollar and other major trading currencies.

Fuel prices have moved from about GH¢16 in January to under GH¢12 cedis due to gains made from the prudent management of the economy. With the increase in ESLA fuel prices would be cheaper or at par with what inherited.

Accrued funds from the increase will be used judiciously to purchase liquid fuels to guarantee constant supply of electricity and ensure that dumsor does not recur.

The current price for a liter of petrol (Super XP) in Ghana is GH₵14.34, according to GOIL PLC. Diesel (Diesel XP) is priced at GH₵12.98 per liter. The new tax of GH₵1 per litre is between 7% to 7.7%.

We, the Gallant Cadres of the NDC wish to appeal to all well meaning Ghanaians to bear with government as it tries to navigate this difficult labyrinth of energy sector debt.

Embrace digital platforms for promotion – Bohyeba Victoria advises gospel musicians

Bohyeba Victoria is a gospel singer and Treasurer for Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) Bohyeba Victoria is a gospel singer and Treasurer for Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA)

Gospel singer and Treasurer for Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bohyeba Victoria has urged her colleagues gospel musicians to make use of digital media in promoting their music.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Bohyeba Victoria explained that digital media is no longer a luxury, a driver for music promotion. She said it is sad to see gospel artistes still depending mostly on traditional platforms like radio and television to promote their songs.

According to her, secular artistes have taken full control of the digital space, using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and streaming services to promote their music and connect with fans.

“Secular artistes are owning the digital space on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and other streaming platforms. They are constantly engaging audiences, pushing content, collaborating with influencers but you can’t say same for my brothers and sisters in the gospel fraternity,” she said.

She pointed out that in today’s digital world, being a big-name artiste is no longer necessary to be successful. What matters is understanding how the platforms work and staying consistent.

“The Internet has levelled the playing field. You don’t have to be a big name to be heard anymore. What you need is consistency, strategy, and understanding how the platforms work,” she stated.

Bohyeba Victoria also encouraged gospel artistes to think beyond just performing in church on Sundays. She said it’s important for them to start making smart moves to push their music, just like their secular counterparts.

“If you’re waiting for someone to ‘push’ you, you’ll be waiting forever. Start where you are, use your phone, post regularly, build your brand. The digital space gives you the power to be your own media house,” she said.

Dagbon is one of my government’s achievements because of you – Akufo-Addo praises Asantehene

0

Former President Akufo-Addo in a hearty conversation with the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Former President Akufo-Addo in a hearty conversation with the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the instrumental role he played in resolving the Dagbon conflict during his administration.

According to him, the Dagbon conflict resolution, which he touted as one of his government’s achievements, was made possible through the mediation of Asantehene.

Peace was restored in Dagbon after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II chaired a committee of other prominent chiefs, who offered wise counsel, leading to the resolution of the long-standing conflict in the Northern Regional town.

Former President Akufo-Addo recounted how the Dagbon conflict had long troubled the nation with seemingly no end in sight.

He added that the success achieved and the peace the town continues to enjoy would not have been possible without the Asantehene’s guidance.

“When I came into power, there were some issues that were troubling the country. If Otumfuo had not helped me, I would not have been successful in dealing with those issues. One of them was the conflict and disputes that had plagued Dagbon for years.

“Otumfuo was the Chairman of the Dagbon chieftaincy mediation committee of eminent chiefs. They were instrumental, as through them, we were able to settle the disputes and bring peace to Dagbon. Whatever be the case, it will be one of the achievements of my government and I have him to thank for,” he said.

Akufo-Addo made this remark when the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, paid a courtesy visit on him at his Nima residence on June 3, 2025.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II together with his delegation of chiefs were warmly welcomed by Akufo-Addo and his wife, former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

He was also welcomed by several former top government officials, including former Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare; Senior Advisor to the former president Albert Kan-Dapaah; former Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul; and Samuel Abu Jinapor, who previously served as Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, among other prominent personalities.

Steve Manteaw raises red flag over proposed Energy Levy Amendment

0

Dr Steve Manteaw is the Co-Chair of GHEITI Dr Steve Manteaw is the Co-Chair of GHEITI

The Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Dr Steve Manteaw, has raised a red flag over the government’s proposed amendment of the Energy Sector Levy, warning that the move could have unintended consequences on the economy and consumers.

Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, approved the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill 2025, which introduces a GH¢1 increase on the levy on petroleum products.

The measure is expected to generate an additional GH¢5.7 billion in revenue to help reduce energy sector debts and ensure stable power supply.

In a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Dr Manteaw noted that the amendment lacks strong accountability framework, stating that the levy could lead to an increase in transport fares and food prices, undercutting the government’s efforts to stabilise the economy.

According to Dr Mateaw, the proposed levy’s charge of Ghc1 per litre of fuel is “too onerous” for consumers, suggesting instead, a charge per gallon or a reduced rate of 25 pesewas per litre to minimise its economic impact.

He also called for a sunset clause to prevent the levy from becoming a permanent fixture, citing the long-standing TOR Debt Recovery Levy as a cautionary example.

As an alternative, Dr Manteaw proposed leveraging recent economic gains such as the cedi’s resurgence and rising gold and cocoa prices, to help reduce energy sector debt without shifting the burden onto consumers.

His remarks fall on the back of intensified public debate over how best to resolve the financial challenges in Ghana’s energy sector without increasing hardship for ordinary citizens.

Below is Dr Steve Manteaw’s take on the proposed amendment of the Energy Sector Levy

1. Well intended, but lacks strong accountability mechanism. This exposes it to potential abuse, including misapplication.

2. May adversely affect transport fares and food prices, undermining government’s call on traders to reduce prices.

3. Too onerous for consumers if placed on a litre of petroleum products. Should rather be placed on a gallon, or reduced to 25p per litre to moderate its effect on cost of living.

4. Provide a sunset clause, so that, it does not assume a perpetual character, like the TOR debt Recovery Levy.

5. Maybe, we should leverage on the gains from the Cedi’s resurgence and rising gold and cocoa prices to defray part of the energy sector indebtedness.

‘I remembered when I was getting rejected’ – Antoine Semenyo recalls emotional moment of first Black Stars call-up

0

Antoine Semenyo is a player of the Black Stars Antoine Semenyo is a player of the Black Stars

Black Stars forward, Antoine Semenyo, has recalled the emotional and surreal moment he received his first-ever call-up to represent Ghana.

Now a regular in the national team setup with 27 caps and appearances at both the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, the Bournemouth striker, in an interview shared on TikTok, says the memory of that life-changing moment in 2022 remains vivid.

At the time, Semenyo said he was still fighting for consistency at club level when he sensed something unusual during a regular training day.

“I remember the training ground just being silent and every time I went to the changing room, it’s like silent. No one is really chatting to me. I’m thinking, like, what’s going on?” he recalled.

The unease only deepened when his club manager approached him directly, something that didn’t normally happen without reason.

“I see the manager and he’s like, ‘Can I chat to you in the office? I’m thinking, have I done a madness? I’m asking the mandem, ‘Have I done something? We got to the office and he was just like, ‘We spoke to the Ghana manager and they want to call you up for the next friendlies’,” he added.

According to the former Bristol City forward, he was stunned, emotionally moved, and almost couldn’t believe that a dream, which had seemed so far away, was finally coming true.

“I’m sitting in the office thinking, you guys are not joking, right? You’re being serious? He’s like, ‘Yeah, they called us and they said they want to call you for the next games.’ And I just remember looking up at the sky, thinking, this is actually a madness,” he further stated.

In that quiet moment, as reality sank in, his mind raced back to the difficult times, the trials, the rejections, the uncertainty. For a few seconds, he just sat there, overwhelmed.

“I’m sitting there reminiscing when I was getting rejected. I remember calling my dad, brother, mum, ‘Yo, I got called up for Ghana.’ Everyone is just screaming. Mum is screaming down the phone,” he recalled.

That call-up marked the beginning of his international career. Since making his debut against Madagascar on June 1, 2022, Semenyo has gone on to earn 27 caps, scoring three goals.

Rwanda-backed rebels in Congo executed civilians, Human Rights Watch says

Members of the M23 rebel group stand guard as people attend a rally addressed by Corneille Nangaa Members of the M23 rebel group stand guard as people attend a rally addressed by Corneille Nangaa

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo executed at least 21 civilians over two days in February in the eastern city of Goma, Human Rights Watch said in a report published on Tuesday.

The report covers incidents on February 22-23 in a Goma neighborhood, offering a snapshot of the violence during the latest escalation of the decades-long conflict.

“Commanders and combatants who directly ordered or carried out abuses should be held criminally accountable,” Human Rights Watch said in the report.

M23 rebels have seized eastern Congo’s two largest cities, Goma and Bukavu, in an offensive that began in January. The unprecedented advance has killed thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee.

The 21 slain civilians included six men and one woman shot in the head near Katindo military camp in Goma on February 22. HRW said M23 were responsible, citing a witness.

In a separate incident, M23 killed people and dumped their bodies at a construction site less than 100 metres away from the camp. These included a 15-year-old who was taken from his home and later found dead at the site, HRW said, citing a relative and a neighbour.

Goma’s Kasika neighbourhood was targeted because it had previously housed Congolese army barracks, HRW said.

The violence continued in the neighbourhood a day later on February 23 when M23 rounded up around 20 young men at a nearby sportsfield.

A witness told HRW the rebels accused the young men of being members of the army. Three that tried to run away were shot.

An M23 leader said the group would look into the allegations and publish the findings.

“HRW gives us an opportunity to mirror ourselves. We respect this organization despite its past accusations which proved to be false,” M23 leader Bertrand Bisimwa told Reuters.

The overall toll in Goma is likely to be higher, HRW said, with medical workers reporting that over 50 bodies were collected from the Kasika area over the two-day period.

Other organizations have previously reported grievous crimes committed in eastern Congo since M23 seized swaths of territory.

Amnesty International in March said rebels had raided hospitals in Goma for wounded Congolese soldiers and taken 130 people including caregivers. Many were tortured and some are still missing.

UNICEF reported a five-fold surge in rape cases treated across 42 health centers in eastern Congo, in February, describing it as the worst sexual violence seen there in years. Almost a third of the victims were children, UNICEF said.

In one example, a mother reported that her six daughters, the youngest just 12 years old, were raped by armed men searching for food.

The conflict in eastern Congo is rooted in the spillover of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide and the struggle over Congo’s vast mineral resources. Rwanda denies U.N. allegations that it backs the M23, saying its forces are acting in self-defence against Congo’s army and allied militias.

Wontumi meets Bawumia, Bryan Acheampong in “Thank you” tour following EOCO release

Healthcare services disrupted nationwide as nurses and midwives strike

0

Healthcare services across the country have been severely impacted as members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) continue their strike, leaving patients stranded and medical facilities struggling to cope.

In the Ashanti Region, major hospitals such as Manhyia, South Suntreso, and Kumasi South have seen a significant slowdown in healthcare delivery.

Key departments, including family planning and specialized clinics at Manhyia Hospital, have shut down entirely, with red bands tied at entrances signaling the ongoing industrial action.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Manhyia Government Hospital, Dr. Adu Boakye, expressed concern over the strain the strike is placing on healthcare services.

With nurses and midwives absent, hospital management is relying on house officers and doctors to attend to the overwhelming number of patients, but the situation remains challenging.

The strike, which has disrupted medical care nationwide, has prompted calls for urgent intervention to restore normal healthcare operations. Authorities are yet to reach a resolution with the striking nurses and midwives, leaving many patients uncertain about when full services will resume.

Meanwhile, physician assistants at the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe have taken over operations at the Outpatient Department (OPD), including checking patients’ vitals, as the nationwide strike by nurses takes full effect in the region.

Regional Chair of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Courage Kumah, told Citi News that the government must prioritise the welfare of nurses and urgently address their conditions of service to resolve the impasse.

While confirming the effective start of the strike across the region, Mr. Kumah also warned against unauthorised health personnel attending to patients, citing potential risks to public health and safety.

Ghana Prepares Prosecutions in 33 Corruption Cases

0

President Mahama And Former President Akufo Addo
President Mahama And Former President Akufo Addo

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana’s Attorney-General is building 33 corruption cases against former government appointees, with some prosecutions already underway.

The President disclosed this during a June 3, 2025 meeting with the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption at Jubilee House.

“We set up the ORAL Committee, and they have identified 33 cases, which were handed over to the Attorney General,” Mahama stated. “We have created special investigative teams to investigate each of them.”

The President noted significant evidence uncovered regarding unlawful property acquisition, adding: “Some of them have found a lot of evidence of the procurement of properties with illicit wealth. With many of them, they are just at the point of beginning prosecution.”

The Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Team, established after Mahama’s 2024 election victory, investigates alleged financial misconduct during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. Its mandate includes probing embezzlement, misuse of public funds, and unexplained wealth accumulation by officials.

ORAL operates autonomously while collaborating with security agencies, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), submitting findings to the Attorney-General.

The initiative faces strong opposition criticism. The NPP accuses the Mahama administration of conducting “politically motivated investigations,” alleging the team lacks transparency and aims to silence critics and tarnish the previous government’s reputation.

NPP-aligned commentators have described ORAL as “a tool for political retribution rather than justice,” warning of potential divisions and instability without strict due process adherence.

President Mahama defends ORAL as essential for restoring governance accountability and public trust, maintaining all investigations are evidence-based rather than politically targeted.

These prosecutions represent Ghana’s most significant anti-corruption action since establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor in 2018, testing institutional capacity to address high-level graft.

Somanya(E/R), June 4, GNA – Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation (HDMF) has marked an important milestone with its inaugural Alumni Homecoming and Graduation Ceremony in Somanya in the Eastern Region, honouring the accomplishments of 57 alumni and welcoming eight new graduates.

The two-event held simultaneously highlighted the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to empowering vulnerable girls and persons with disabilities through vocational training and personal development.

As part of its mission to foster economic independence and social inclusion, HDMF continues to equip many individuals with skills that enhance their livelihoods.

The celebration served not only as a recognition of resilience and determination but also as a testament to the Foundation’s dedication to creating opportunities for marginalized groups.

Addressing the gathering, Executive Director of HDMF, Dr. Otiko Afisah Djaba, inspired both the graduates and fresh students in a powerful message, urging them to pursue their dreams with confidence and resolve.

“There is no perfect time. The perfect time is now,” she said, encouraging them to overcome poverty and social exclusion through self-belief, perseverance, and discipline.

The graduates, who received training in fashion design, cosmetology, and jewelry-making, were commended for their dedication, discipline, and hard work.

Dr. Djaba emphasized the importance of turning challenges into opportunities and urged the youth to become agents of change in their various communities.

“You are a gift to yourself, your family, and your community,” she noted. “Step into the future with courage.”

Guest speaker Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Mr. Roey Gilad, also addressed the ceremony.

He encouraged the grandaunts to break barriers and always strive for excellence, citing Golda Meir, Israel’s first female prime minister, as an example of what determination can achieve.

“If you encourage yourselves, you will become great people of substance,” he stated. “I believe women can lead change across the world, especially here in Africa and in Ghana.”

He acknowledged the struggles many women, particularly those with disabilities, face in society and emphasized their critical role in Africa’s transformation.

“It’s not easy to be a woman anywhere in the world, and even more so in Africa,” he added. “But women, especially those who defy the odds, will be the driving force of change.”

A past student, Ms. Vivian Delali, shared her testimony, crediting the HDMF training centre for helping her achieve her dream of becoming a cosmetologist, stating that

“Without the training, I wouldn’t be a tutor and a hairdresser today,”

Ms. Hannah Abena Blessing Nyame, who was named the overall best student, attributed her success to resilience and hard work.

She encouraged young girls to take advantage of similar opportunities, adding: “Skills training can change your life. Do not depend on others but empower yourself.”

Several Chiefs, Assembly members, religious leaders, heads of department from both private and state institutions participated in the event.

Afenyo-Markin slams parliamentary camera crew for zooming in on his shoe, alleges partisan bias

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader of Parliament Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader of Parliament

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has expressed strong disapproval of what he described as partisan conduct by parliamentary cameramen during Parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

The incident occurred during an extended sitting of the House, which was debating the Energy Sector Levy 2025, presented under a certificate of urgency.

In a passionate address to the Speaker, the Minority Leader raised concerns over the selective focus on his shoes by the parliamentary camera crew, accusing them of targeting him.

He argued that when the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, was speaking, the cameras focused solely on his torso, presenting a professional image.

However, when he (Afenyo-Markin) momentarily removed his shoe due to discomfort, a cameraman deliberately zoomed in on his feet.

“Mr Speaker, if a cameraman deliberately films the moment when I have taken my leg out of my shoe, to play politics with a camera, we will not take kindly to it,” he stated.

“I had momentarily taken my leg out of my shoe because I was in pain, then he zoomed the camera down to capture it,” he added.

The Minority Leader questioned why the camera crew focused on his lower body while consistently capturing only the upper body of the Majority Leader.

“If they are now focusing on our legs, why is it that when they go to the Majority Leader, they only focus on the upper part of his body? If the cameraman is engaging in partisan politics, then he must be cautioned,” he vented.

The Minority Leader emphasised that the issue was not personal but a matter of principle, warning that such actions could set a bad precedent.

“Mr Speaker, I will speak on some of these things because today it may be me but tomorrow it may be you. It is not right. I was in pain, so, I removed my leg from my shoe. How come when I’m debating, you decide to only zoom down at my feet?” he questioned.

“They must be told that they should do their work professionally. Mr Speaker, I am saying this; nobody should take it personal. Nobody should hold the fort for them. Tomorrow, it will be you. As for me, I will speak on some of these things. If you think you want to support them, one day they will focus on you. So, let us stop them. It is not right that when you are zooming a camera in the chamber, you go and target the Leader’s shoe,” the Minority Leader stated.

His remarks follow a parliamentary debate to pass the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill, which was presented to Parliament by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

The minister sought the approval of the House to pass a GH¢1 levy per litre of fuel.

According to the minister, the bill aims to ensure the mobilisation of funds to address debts in the energy sector and resolve power supply challenges.

Amerado Expresses Disappointment Over Artiste Of The Year Snub

0

Amerado

Ghanaian rapper, Amerado Burner, has expressed his disappointment at not being nominated for the Artiste of the Year category at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Awards.

Speaking on Hitz FM on Monday, the rapper said he was surprised by the omission, especially after putting in what he described as consistent hard work during the year under review.

“I was a bit disappointed not being nominated for the Artiste of the Year category,” he said. “I worked very hard throughout the year and expected to see my name on that list.”

Amerado was, however, nominated in three other categories: Best Hiplife/HipHop Artiste, Best Highlife Song, and Best Reggae/Dancehall Song. Unfortunately, he did not win in any of those categories.

In addition to missing out on the top award, Amerado was also absent from the main award ceremony. He explained that he missed the event because he forgot the date.

“I was out for a project and forgot the date of the event. I woke up the next morning and got to know King Promise won the Artiste of the Year,” he stated.

Despite the setback, Amerado highlighted the importance of industry recognition. “Having an award is very essential as an artiste. An award builds up your CV and gives you joy,” he said.

$2.5bn Industrial hub stalls – Squatters swarm site

0

A massive $2.5 billion project by Sentuo Building Materials Complex, an initiative under the government’s Big Push programme, has stalled due to a dispute with squatters on the site.

The company has faced significant setbacks in its bid to develop the proposed site it acquired seven years ago, which is located at Ashaiman along the Tema-Accra Motorway.

The complex is for the manufacture of a tall list of building materials as well as training fabricators and companies in the built environment.

The Sentuo Building Materials Complex aims to leverage China’s industrial and technical expertise in building materials to create a cutting-edge industrial model designed to create over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Already, the company’s parent, Sentuo Group, has invested massively in the country, with projects, including the Sentuo Steel, Sentuo Ceramics and Sentuo Petroleum Refinery, all located in Tema in the Greater Accra Region.

The latest project, proposed to occupy 390,000 square metres, approximately two kilometres, features five key platforms: a trading platform, grade evaluation platform, logistics platform, a manufacturer storage platform, and management and after-sales platform.

Additionally, it will have a central hub where manufacturers, merchants and consumers can interact.

There will also be recreational and play areas.

LatexFoamPromo

The Technical and Group Corporate Affairs Director of Sentuo Building Materials Complex, Benjamin Gomado-Cobblah, told the Daily Graphic that the company had made several attempts to evict the squatters through the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, but without success.

“We have made several attempts to evict them through the TDC and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly since we acquired the land seven years ago, but without success,” Mr Gomado-Cobblah said.

“In fact, the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly had offered them a land near the Zoomlion’s treatment plant after the TDC had initially offered them a stretch of land near the Tema Motorway,” he added.

Mr Gomado-Cobblah explained that the project was not only expected to cater for the country’s industrial needs, but also be a major export hub to other West African countries.

This giant manufacturing hub will attract many manufacturing companies to the country, providing a much-needed boost to the country’s development agenda.

“Because of this project, many manufacturing companies are going to come to Ghana,” Mr Gomado-Cobblah said.

“Indeed, it is going to be a catalyst to attract many manufacturing companies to Ghana, which is what is needed at this point in time in Ghana’s development agenda,” he added.

Job opportunities

The squatters, mostly scrap dealers, have rejected all offers, delaying the project’s take-off. With over 25,000 potential direct and indirect jobs hanging in the balance, the project’s progress remains uncertain.

Its promoters believe the project will be a game-changer for the economy. Its strategic location near Tema Port makes it an ideal hub for the distribution of building materials in Africa.

As part of the initiative, Sentuo plans to build Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across Ghana, providing a conducive business environment for investors.

The SEZs will offer state-of-the-art infrastructure and leverage the state’s tax incentives and streamlined regulatory processes to attract both local and foreign investors.

Industrial transformation

The Sentuo Building Materials Complex will feature a range of facilities, including a building materials mall, brand shops, warehousing and logistics centres, headquarters buildings and residential facilities.

Upon completion, the complex will provide comprehensive after-sales services and whole-process supervision from manufacturer to user.

Supporting initiatives

Beyond its industrial ambitions, Mr Gomado-Cobblah said the project promised to significantly contribute to national development initiatives.

“It will support the National Apprenticeship Scheme and the 24-hour Economy by establishing a state-of-the-art technical university.

“This institution will offer long and short-term Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills tailored to the needs of the 21st century,” he added.

Scrap Office of Special Prosecutor, it’s a waste of national resources – Atik Mohammed tells government

0

Executive Director of Mass Action for Sustainable Development, Atik Mohammed Executive Director of Mass Action for Sustainable Development, Atik Mohammed

The Executive Director of Mass Action for Sustainable Development, Atik Mohammed, has called for the dissolution of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing it as a waste of national resources with little to show in the fight against corruption.

Speaking on Eko Sii Sen on Asempa FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, June 4, 2024, Atik Mohammed criticised the conduct of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, stating that his approach to handling alleged corruption cases has not inspired public confidence.

“His actions on alleged cases of corruption have not been encouraging. Some of the cases he chooses to pursue appear to be driven by personal reasons, not necessarily by the goal of fighting corruption,” he argued.

Mohammed further questioned the basis on which the Special Prosecutor claimed intimidation, particularly in reference to recent allegations that some officials of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) used intimidation, threats and coercion to acquire property.

“He should ensure he gets his facts right before heading to court. We have wasted our money on this office. He has not helped the fight against corruption in Ghana. Rather, he has emboldened people to be corrupt. He has not successfully prosecuted any corrupt official,” he said.

He called on government to reallocate the OSP’s resources to other investigative bodies in the country.

“We should save ourselves resources by collapsing that entity. It is not going to weaken anything. Let us give the Attorney General the needed resources to fight corruption. Let’s strengthen EOCO and CHRAJ,” he added.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor was established in 2018 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to investigate and prosecute specific cases of corruption and corruption-related offences in the private and public sectors.

Bitcoin Adoption in Ghana and Understanding the 17% Ownership Surge

0

Recently, Ghana has grown into one of Africa’s most significant cryptocurrency markets. Despite regulatory uncertainty worldwide, Bitcoin’s use in the country has risen sharply. Roughly 17% of adults in Ghana now own cryptocurrency and Bitcoin is the most adopted type. The rise in entrepreneurial activity points to broader social and financial changes and a higher demand from Ghanaians for alternative financial services.

People following the market can use the current Bitcoin price to know what investors think and when they will likely act.

What Drives Bitcoin’s Rising Price

Ghana’s economic situation helps explain the surge. Because of higher inflation, regular currency declines, and fewer opportunities for global financial services, Ghanaians are now looking for new methods to save and make transfers. Bitcoin, because it is decentralized and can serve as a hedge against fiat problems, is being considered by many.

Also, many of Ghana’s population is young, technology proficient and comfortable using mobile money services. Thanks to this knowledge, moving to cryptocurrency has been more straightforward for many who already use digital wallets and make online payments. Bitcoin attracts city-based youth and business owners searching for modern ways to protect and increase their savings, invest funds and form international financial links.

From Mobile Money to Bitcoin

Many know Ghana for its active mobile money industry, which has greatly improved financial access for the population. Now, MTN Mobile Money is used daily by many to handle their money transfers. People’s comfort with mobile banking has created a foundation for accepting cryptocurrencies.

Given its unique capabilities, Bitcoin now attracts users interested in accessing financial markets beyond their home countries. Bitcoin gives freelancers, small businesses, and digital creatives the chance to work with clients around the world at cheaper and faster rates. People who use these wallets are interested in both investing in Bitcoin and transacting with it each day.

A New View of Cryptocurrencies: Moving from Hype to Usefulness

To begin with, Bitcoin was viewed mainly as an investment in Ghana, but that is starting to shift. In addition to its other uses, Bitcoin is now possible to view as an important method for reaching financial self-reliance. Mail Dash now gives Ghanaians in other countries an opportunity to send money back home more cheaply and faster than using standard banks or remittance channels.

In addition, stores, especially e-commerce businesses, are now accepting Bitcoin as a payment method. While many merchants in those areas still have not adopted, peer-to-peer use of cryptocurrencies is rising. They allow individuals to transform Bitcoin into their local trade or goods, setting up unofficial economies apart from mainstream financial services.

Education and Accessibility as Important Motivators

Many people have started owning Bitcoin because of what they learned in school. Thanks to efforts by local crypto communities, webinars you can register for and social media, more individuals are better informed about blockchain and digital currencies. People in Ghana are gaining awareness of Bitcoin and learning what they need to know to get involved safely.

It is now much easier for people to get the information they need. Various user-friendly wallets, local trading platforms, and mobile service involvements are decreasing hurdles for those using cryptocurrency for the first time.

Having mobile wallets is especially helpful for Ghana since traditional banks can only reach a small percentage of rural areas. As people use the internet and smartphones more, crypto platforms start to serve those who would otherwise not have access.

Using Bitcoin to Accomplish Economic Goals

For many Ghanaians, Bitcoin means more than money—it represents their empowerment. When ordinary financial services are slow, too expensive, or unavailable, Bitcoin lets people take matters into their own hands. Those who use cryptocurrencies can hold, trade, and discover additional income streams without involving banks or remittance businesses.

Bitcoin continues to perform well in uncertain economic or political areas. Because the cryptocurrency system is decentralized, it can still be accessed when financial services in a location fail. That’s why some people are now considering Bitcoin to safeguard their wealth.

The Challenges Ahead for Ghana

Even though more people in Ghana are adopting Bitcoin, many challenges remain. There is widespread uncertainty about various regulations. While some in the government support digital financial developments, there is still no clear rulebook for using cryptocurrencies. As a result, both users and businesses may not know if the law protects them.

Ensuring safety is yet another issue. Because of fraud, Ponzi schemes and illegal exchanges, some people are starting to doubt the industry. We need to work harder to raise security awareness and differentiate actual crypto activity from fake ones.

Infrastructure limitations, mainly in rural parts of the country, make it difficult for more people to try electric cars. While more people use smartphones and mobile internet, there are still those who cannot fully access Bitcoin and this should be fixed if Bitcoin is to succeed everywhere.

What Ghana Could Bring to Africa’s Bitcoin Scene

Ghana’s high rate of Bitcoin owners points to a major change in the way money is used. More progress in cryptocurrency infrastructure and better education will accelerate this trend.

Ghana has all the advantages of becoming a center for crypto development in West Africa. Given its youth, previous advancements in fintech and willingness to embrace digital changes, Ghana may help lead the way in including digital assets in the daily lives of people in Africa.

With clearer regulations and innovative technologies, we expect the next phase of Bitcoin adoption in Ghana to go even further and have a bigger impact. We have started on solid ground.

Today, using Bitcoin wisely requires cooperation amongst those who innovate, those who use it, and those who control regulations to ensure this happens in a fair, safe, and steady way.

‘My anointing got Chairman Wontumi out of EOCO custody’ – Agradaa claims

Founder and leader of Heaven Way Chapel, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Founder and leader of Heaven Way Chapel, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua

Founder and leader of Heaven Way Chapel, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Agradaa, has once again stirred controversy with a bold statement regarding the ongoing investigation involving Chairman Wontumi and EOCO.

It will be recalled that on June 2, 2025, Agradaa made a surprise appearance at the EOCO headquarters while Chairman Wontumi was in custody facing investigation.

But in a new video circulating on social media dated June 4, 2025, Agradaa has confidently asserted that her presence at the EOCO office played a divine role in Wontumi’s release.

“You’re all making noise on social media just because I went to EOCO and graced the place with my presence,” she said. “I wasn’t the one who bailed him out, it was the anointing and favor upon my life that led to his release,” she stated.

She added, “Whether you like it or not, it was my anointing. Didn’t you notice that after I showed up, he was released that same day? When God blesses you, grace and favor follow you wherever you go,” she added.

On June 2, 2025, Chairman Wontumi was officially released from EOCO custody after meeting his bail conditions.

His release was facilitated partly by Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, who served as one of his sureties.

Prolonged rainfalls in parts of the Greater Accra Region has rendered Kaneshie, a bustling commercial hub in Accra, flooded.

In a video shared on SikaOfficial’s X account on June 4, 2025, vehicles were seen driving through the flood waters, as high as the level of tyres of commercial buses.

“The flood situation at Kaneshie, following this morning’s downpour across Accra,” the caption accompanying the video stated.

The intensity of the rainfall quickly overwhelmed the drainage systems, turning roads into veritable rivers and creating an uncomfortable situation for commuters and residents alike.

The high volumes of water made navigation perilous, with some vehicles struggling to push through the impromptu floods that had formed.

Scenes from the video depicted a challenging scenario.

Consolidation is a good idea, but not a quick fix – Dr Kwabena Donkor

0

Former Minister of Energy, Dr Kwabena Donkor Former Minister of Energy, Dr Kwabena Donkor

Former Minister of Energy, Dr Kwabena Donkor, has said the proposal to consolidate fuel levies is a step in the right direction but warns it will not bring immediate relief to consumers.

Speaking on the #AMShow on JoyNews and monitored by GhanaWeb, he explained that while consolidation could improve administrative efficiency, it won’t reduce fuel prices right away.

“There are areas within the existing fuel price build-up – like the Uniform Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) and private distribution margins – where savings can be made.

“These costs are transport-related, and with global fuel prices dropping, part of the savings could be used to cushion the proposed one cedi tax,” he stated.

However, he stressed that any new levy must go through Parliament, as required by the 1992 Constitution.

This statement follows Parliament’s approval of the new fuel levy on Tuesday, June 3, a move that has attracted public backlash, particularly from opposition NPP MPs.

Minority protests at CID over undeclared Ablekuma North election result

0

Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament staged a protest march to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday to present a petition over the unresolved parliamentary election result in Ablekuma North, in the Greater Accra region.

The parliamentary outcome for the constituency remains officially undeclared nearly six months after the December 7, 2024, general election, despite full participation by voters.

The confusion has meant that the constituents have been denied representation since January 7.

Both the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie have declared victory in the hotly contested seat.

The collation process, however, has been marred by violence, missing pink sheets, and legal interventions.

Multiple attempts to finalise the results have ended in scuffles, with police forced to intervene.

The Electoral Commission (EC) suspended the collation in January after discrepancies in results from at least 20 polling stations emerged, while a fire later destroyed some ballot materials at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools, further compounding the crisis.

The EC has yet to announce a final resolution.

Meanwhile, key institutions including the Ghana Bar Association and CODEO have called for urgent action—with CODEO suggesting a possible rerun if the stalemate persists.

Presenting their petition, the Minority Caucus demanded immediate clarity and accountability from the EC and law enforcement, warning that continued delay undermines democracy and the rights of Ablekuma North residents.

Inflation falls sharply to 18.4% in May as transport cost eases

0

Ghana’s inflation rate fell sharply to 18.4% year-on-year in May 2025.

This is down from the 21.2% recorded in April and marks the lowest rate since February 2022.

It also extends the country’s disinflation trend into its fifth consecutive month as the rate nearly halves from its 2022 peaks

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) attributes the significant decline to reductions in transport fares and a marked slowdown in non-food inflation, signaling a sustained easing in the pace at which consumer prices are rising.

Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, said at a press briefing in Accra that the recent drop in fuel prices at the pumps, which influenced a nationwide adjustment in transport fares played a major role in cooling inflationary pressures in May.

He added that food inflation, though still elevated, continued to ease while services and transport-related costs recorded the steepest drop, providing some relief to household budgets.

Regionally, inflation disparities remain wide.

The Upper West Region posted the highest inflation rate at 38.1%, driven largely by higher food prices and transport costs in the northern belt.

The Ahafo Region, however, recorded the lowest inflation at 14.5% suggesting more stable price dynamics in that zone.

The latest inflation data is likely to bolster market confidence in the ongoing macroeconomic recovery and support the central bank’s monetary policy stance.

Skit Maker Nasobi Involved In A Ghastly Motor Accident While Begging Davido For A Verse

News Hub Creator4h

The Nigerian entertainment industry and music lovers are in a state of panic following an alarming report about popular skit maker and singer Lawal Michael Nasiru Bolaji, better known as Nasboi.

A video that has gone viral shows Nasboi involved in a serious motor accident that left his car severely damaged while he was traveling across different states to plead with Davido for a verse on his new song.

Just days prior, the skit maker took to his Instagram to share his admiration for Davido, expressing how he often tries to imitate the singer while performing. He even urged Davido to drop a music verse for him, showcasing his determination to get the superstar’s attention.

In a bold move, Nasboi embarked on a journey to travel to every state in Nigeria, starting from Osun, which is Davido’s home state, in hopes of catching the artist’s eye.

However, in a recent post, Nasboi shared a video capturing the aftermath of the accident, revealing that his car was crushed by a heavy-duty vehicle. Acknowledging his fault in the incident, he stated that he did not blame the accident on his quest for Davido’s attention, insisting that it could have happened anywhere, even in Lagos.

UK threatens to sue Abramovich over Chelsea sale

0

The UK government has threatened to sue former Chelsea Football Club owner, Roman Abramovich, to make sure the money from the club’s sale goes to Ukraine.

The £2.5bn in proceeds have been frozen in a UK bank account since the sale, with Mr Abramovich sanctioned after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The UK government wants the money to be for Ukrainian humanitarian aid, but Mr Abramovich has said he wants it to go to “all victims of the war in Ukraine”.

In a joint statement, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: “While the door for negotiations will remain open, we are fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if required.”

They said they wanted “to ensure people suffering in Ukraine can benefit from these proceeds as soon as possible”.

They added: “The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion.

“We are deeply frustrated that it has not been possible to reach agreement on this with Mr Abramovich so far”.

The delay in releasing the funds centers on a disagreement between the UK government and his lawyers.

Mr Abramovich, a Russian billionaire who made his fortune in oil and gas – was granted a special licence to sell Chelsea following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, providing he could prove he would not benefit from the sale.

He is alleged to have strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, something he has denied.

He cannot access the £2.5bn sale proceeds under UK sanctions but the money still legally belongs to him.

When he announced his decision to sell the club, he said proceeds from the sale would be donated via a foundation “for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine”, which would include those in Russia.

The UK government has pushed back and argued that the funds should only be spent on humanitarian efforts inside Ukraine.

A House of Lords committee said last year said it was “incomprehensible” that Mr Abramovich’s promise to use the funds to support Ukraine remained unfulfilled, and that the assets remained frozen.

“This impasse reflects badly on both Mr Abramovich and the government, which ought to have pushed for a more binding commitment,” the report said. —BBC

June 4 Uprising: Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the NPP

Goosie Tanoh is a founding member of the National Democratic Congress Goosie Tanoh is a founding member of the National Democratic Congress

A founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Goosie Tanoh, has urged the party to learn from the mistakes of its political opponent – the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and govern with a focus on the collective upliftment of Ghanaians.

As the NDC commemorates the 46th anniversary of the June 4 Uprising, the Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development praised President John Dramani Mahama for initiating a reset agenda.

According to Tanoh, the reset agenda aims to restore public trust and align governance with the needs of ordinary Ghanaians.

However, he stressed that the party must complement this vision with internal reforms.

In a release sighted by GhanaWeb, he said; “The overwhelming defeat of the NPP at the 7th December 2024 polls is a wake-up call not just to the NPP but to the NDC as well and all who seek to govern our beloved country, Ghana. The decisive rejection of the erstwhile regime of the NPP is pregnant with lessons about how not to govern, whether it be the state, a political party or any other public institution.

“We, as a party, must learn from this in the governance of our affairs. The state is not to be governed for private gains but for collective upliftment and the conquest of poverty in all its aspects, including the conquest of the poverty of mind that leads to the reckless dissipation of our national resources and collective patrimony.”

The June 4 Uprising, spearheaded by the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, marked a turning point in Ghana’s history, leading to the overthrow of the Supreme Military Council and paving the way for the country’s transition to civilian rule.

Its annual commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of ethical leadership and civic responsibility.

As the nation reflects on this defining moment, the values of the uprising remain as relevant as ever, guiding current and future generations toward justice, accountability, and principled governance.

June 3rd Disaster: Victims Call For Justice

0

SOME SURVIVING victims of the June 3 fire and flood disaster, which claimed over 150 lives and injured more than 100 others, have registered their displeasure over the neglect of government to seek justice following the tragic incident.

According to them, for the past decade, no proper legal action has been taken against GOIL, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in holding them accountable for their alleged roles in the incident.

Speaking to Citi News during the 10th-anniversary commemoration at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange GOIL fuel station on Tuesday, June 3, where the disaster occurred, Leader of the Movement, Senyo Hosi, expressed disappointment over the lack of accountability, and urged the state to deliver justice.

Chairman of the Flood and Fire Victims Association, Thomas Sekyi, lamented the continued neglect of survivors and the indifference often displayed by some public institutions.

He mentioned how survivors have been met with bureaucratic silence when engaging the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), adding that the worst-case scenario was the absence of a coordinated national support system to reintegrate victims into society.

On the legal front, counsel for the victims, Sampson Lardi, who filed a class-action suit in 2018, remains optimistic about a favourable court ruling.

“They are in court, 69 of them seeking help for themselves and over 100 others. They are seeking about GH¢42 million. With inflation, the value isn’t the same today. Even if they are granted the amount, the government can still intervene meaningfully to provide solace,” he stated.

Meanwhile, some victims, while recounting the tragic events, appealed for the government’s support beyond the court process.

“It was a sad day for me. I lost my wife and our child. It’s only by God’s grace that I’m still alive. The government should take care of the injured and victims,” one survivor shared.

Another survivor stated, “I had come to buy fuel and was met with this unfortunate incident. My whole body was burned. The government paid our hospital bills, but since then, there’s been no support. We plead with the government to come to our aid.”

Background

On June 3, 2015, exactly 10 years and a day ago, Accra experienced a devastating flood and fire disaster. The disaster was caused by heavy rainfall and flooding, which led to an explosion at the GOIL filling station near Kwame Nkrumah Circle. The explosion triggered a massive fire, engulfing the area and resulting in widespread destruction.

The tragedy on that fateful Wednesday night claimed over 150 lives, injured several others, and caused damage to properties worth hundreds of thousands of Ghana Cedis, sending the entire nation into a state of shock.

Over the years, legal teams representing some survivors of the flood and fire disaster have threatened court actions, demanding that both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) compensate them.

Meanwhile, the One Ghana Movement has renewed its call for justice for victims of the June 3 fire and flood disaster, as the nation marks ten years of the tragedy.

Ashanti GNASSM seeks extension of excavator registration deadline

0

By Gideon Peprah

Kumasi, June 04, GNA – The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) is urging the government and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to extend the two-week deadline for the registration of excavators.

While the association strongly supports the initiative, they fear the short timeline may present logistical difficulties for their members.

Mr. Adu Gyamfi, the Ashanti District Secretary of the GNASSM, pledged the association’s support for the DVLA’s efforts to regulate heavy-duty equipment, a move aimed at curbing illegal mining activities and protecting the environment.

“We commend the DVLA for their proactive approach to this critical issue, however we believe a two-week window may not be sufficient for all our members to gather the required documentation, particularly considering existing purchase and payment agreements,” he told the Ghana News Agency in an interview.

The association is therefore appealing for an extension to ensure its members have ample opportunity to comply with the new regulations and avoid potential penalties.

Mr. Adu Gyamfi emphasized the importance of registration and urged all excavator owners, especially those within GNASSM, to prioritize compliance.

“Failure to register within the stipulated timeframe could lead to negative consequences,” he warned.

He believed that an extension would allow its members to fulfill the registration requirements effectively, contributing to the overall success of the government’s initiative to combat illegal mining.

Ghana Link defends e-tracking system after national security criticism

0

Ghana Link Network Services Ltd, operators of the country’s Electronic Cargo Tracking (E-Tracking) system under the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), has strongly refuted claims made by a National Security officer questioning the reliability of the system.

In a statement issued today, the company described the remarks—made publicly during a cargo examination in Kumasi—as “inaccurate and misleading.”

Ghana Link outlined a detailed timeline, noting that all tracking devices were properly installed under Customs supervision, route and cargo changes were duly approved, and system-generated alerts were triggered and investigated as designed.

The company also raised concerns over an incident where one of its officers was briefly detained by National Security operatives for refusing to bypass standard protocols.

“The facts speak for themselves,” the statement said. “There was no tracking failure. Devices functioned as intended, approvals were obtained, and alerts were generated and acted upon.”

Ghana Link reaffirmed confidence in the E-Tracking system, describing it as a GPS-enabled, tamper-evident solution that meets international standards.

The company expressed disappointment that a National Security officer would publicly undermine a system credited with improving revenue assurance and trade transparency.

It reiterated its commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to strengthen inter-agency coordination and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s cargo monitoring systems.

British Council engages Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts on cultural collaboration

The British Council, led by Nii Doodo Dodoo, has paid a working visit to Ghana’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts to explore areas of collaboration in promoting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

The visit was marked by discussions on enhancing the creative arts sector and leveraging tourism as a significant economic contributor.

Welcoming the delegation, Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie expressed appreciation for the British Council’s longstanding role in supporting arts and culture in Ghana.

She emphasised the need for increased support in areas such as gastronomy, craft, dance, and painting, which she said receive minimal investment despite their potential to elevate Ghana’s cultural presence globally.

“Ghana does not lack talent, but we require the correct training to make our creatives marketable and competitive on the world stage,” the minister stated.

She also underscored the importance of educating and professionalising tour guides, ensuring they narrate Ghana’s history accurately and engagingly without distorting facts.

Dodoo, an international development expert who led the group, reflected on his ties to Ghana’s tourism sector, describing the visit as a “homecoming” and recounting his early experiences as a tour guide in Ghana.

He noted that the British Council has been active in the country for over 80 years, contributing to various sectors, particularly arts and culture.

The organisation expressed keen interest in the “Black Star Experience” initiative and its role in shaping Ghana’s cultural narrative.

“In the UK, tourism contributes close to 16 billion pounds annually, with about one million people employed in the industry. There are immense lessons Ghana can take from such a model,” Dodoo remarked.

The discussion also touched on empowering young artists with business skills to maximize commercial benefits from their talents.

The British Council reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating cultural exchanges and strengthening Ghana’s creative economy through strategic partnerships.

The minister, reiterating the need for consistency and quality in Ghanaian arts and crafts, shared a personal observation: carvings she traded in the 1980s remain intact, whereas more recent gifts from other countries have deteriorated quickly.

“Policy must recondition mindsets and ensure consistency in our cultural outputs,” she asserted.

The engagement between the British Council and the ministry marks a step forward in fostering stronger partnerships for the development of Ghana’s tourism, Culture, and creative arts sectors.

NSB finance director details how she unknowingly transferred GH¢49m to Adu-Boahene’s account

0

The Director of Finance at the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Edith Ruby Opokua Adumuah, has given details of how she unknowingly transferred the GH¢49 million at the heart of the prosecution of Kwabena Adu-Boahene, her former Director-General.

In her witness statement cited by GhanaWeb, Opokua Adumuah, as the custodian of the cheques of the NSB: ‘Bureau of National Communications,’ ‘Bureau of National Communications 2’ and ‘The Director BNC,’ said she received instructions from Adu-Boahene to write cheques.

She said she handed them over to the signatories to the accounts, which included the former NSB director, for approval.

She indicated that the first cheque she issued on the GH¢49 million in contention was on February 6, 2022, and was on the instruction of Adu-Boahene (A1).

She added that Adu-Boahene instructed her to write the cheque of GH¢27.1 million with “BNC Operations” as the payee.

Ruth explained further that she thought that “BNC Operations” was the NSB’s ‘Bureau of National Communications 2,’ which is the operational account of the bureau kept at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), but later got to know that it was the account for Adu-Boahene and his wife (A2), which they kept at the UMB.

“On February 6, 2020, A1 instructed me to write a cheque for twenty-seven million, one hundred thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢27,100,000.00) with ‘BNC Operations’ as the payee. After writing the cheque, I handed it over to A1 for the necessary signatures. My Lord, when A1 directed me to write the cheque with ‘BNC Operations’ as the payee, I understood the description to refer to an existing operational bank account belonging to the bureau, which I was not privy to due to my level of clearance.

“I later found out, when I was invited for questioning concerning this case, that that particular cheque was deposited into an account named ‘BNC Communications Bureau-Operations’ at UMB Bank. I did not know this at the time I wrote the cheque for A1. I also found out from EOCO investigators that that bank account belonged to a private company called ‘BNC Communication Bureau Limited,’ which is owned and controlled by A1 and A2,” parts of her witness statement read.

Adu-Boahene is a Director-General of the NSB, formerly known as the Bureau of National Communications (BNC)

The NSB finance director further stated that she received similar instructions from Adu-Boahene and wrote cheques of GH¢1 million and GH¢21 million, which were all drawn from the bureau’s ‘The Director BNC’ account.

“Also, on March 18, 2020, A1 instructed me to write a cheque for one million Ghana cedis (GH¢1,000,000.00) to be drawn on BNC’s ‘The Director BNC’ account at Fidelity Bank. Then, on March 30, 2020, I wrote another cheque for twenty-one million Ghana cedis (GH¢21,000,000.00), also to be drawn on the BNC’s ‘The Director BNC’ account at Fidelity Bank. I wrote this third cheque, too, on the instructions of A1. I wrote the second and third cheques also with ‘BNC Operations’ as the payee. After A1 and the late JOSHUA KYEREMEH had signed, A1 then gave me an account number and directed me to deposit the two cheques into the ‘BNC Operations’ bank account at UMB Bank.

“I complied with A1’s directive, believing that the ‘BNC Operations’ bank account was an additional BNC operational account which I did not have the security clearance to know. I can identify the copies of cheque numbered 020086 for GH¢27,100,000.00, cheque numbered 020089 for GH¢1,000,000.00, and cheque numbered 020094 for GH¢21,000,000.00 to the honourable court,” she added.

About the state’s case:

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine

The Office of the Attorney General slapped Kwabena Adu-Boahene; his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng; their associate, Mildred Boateng; and a company jointly owned by Adu-Boahene and his wife, Advantage Solutions Limited, with 11 charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account.

Addressing the press on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine stated that Adu-Boahene was implicated in the unauthorised transfer of $7 million, originally allocated for cybersecurity infrastructure, into his private accounts.

“In his capacity as Director of the National Signals Bureau, Mr Adu-Boahene, on January 30, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on the one hand, and on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of a cyber defence system software at a price of $7 million,” the Attorney General said.

‘A container is not like a piece of paper that you fold and throw away’ – Former ECG boss

0

Former Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama Former Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama

Former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has asserted that the 1,346 containers reported missing are still at the port.

According to him, containers cannot be cleared and released without the payment of duties and adherence to due processes at the port.

Speaking on TV3, in an interview monitored by GhanaWeb Business, the former ECG boss stated that every container has a unique number that can be tracked.

He emphasised the need for the Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, and other key stakeholders to investigate the matter further.

Mahama urged these individuals to visit other terminals, engage with shipping lines, and explore all possible avenues to locate the “missing” containers belonging to ECG.

“I strongly believe that the containers are at the port… There are only two entities that have control over those containers. The discussion is that those containers are at the port, under the custody of GPHA and Ghana Customs,” he said.

“ECG hasn’t paid its duty, fine. But why auction a container belonging to ECG without ECG’s knowledge? Because, in my candid opinion, that’s the only way a container can leave the port,” the former ECG boss stated.

He added, “A container is not like a piece of paper that you fold and throw away. In international supply chain logistics, a container has a unique number. There are processes at the port; let’s go through those processes.”

It may be recalled that the Chairman of the investigative committee, Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, disclosed that while ECG claimed to have 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential equipment, an independent audit at the port found only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,357 unaccounted for.

The issue of the missing ECG containers, which remain locked at the Tema Port and were intended for clearance, has raised significant concerns among stakeholders in the power industry and the general public.

Before 2022, ECG had a dedicated fund that received weekly allocations for clearing shipments.

However, the practice was discontinued due to a lack of funds, according to the ECG board.

Despite financial constraints, ECG awarded contracts to two firms to clear the containers, one of which was pre-financed by ECG.

One of these companies lacked the necessary license to handle the contract, raising concerns about procurement violations.

Additionally, ECG’s procurement directorate had been merged with its Housing and Estate unit.

The Director of Procurement had no prior experience in procurement and was not a member of any professional procurement body.

“You don’t have the privilege to call me a child”

Regina Daniels has replied once more as tensions continue to rise online — this time, shortly after Mercy Johnson announced she would be speaking her truth.

In a new post, Regina addressed fresh claims made about her, saying:

“Kwete o! 😂 My mama you no go talk shishi for here. No one deserves that explanation. Leave her for me. Now I will answer as the disrespectful child you branded me. But deep down, you know you do not have the privilege to call me a child but rather ‘sis’.”

She continued, throwing more shade:

“Now Let’s drop the maturity cloak I hide behind. Werey I thought you were good at typing and speaking loud like you own a megaphone. Mind you, I haven’t dropped any tangible receipt or moved beyond my keypad except the ones your chochocho mouth has produced. But thanks for revealing that my ancestor blocked you. May we not do anything to offend our ancestors. They move faster than karma.”

Reacting to the claims that her husband once wanted to feature someone in a movie, she said:

“Now to the biggest lie you dropped like it was gospel. That my husband wanted me in your project? C’mon girl even you know that’s fiction from the pits. Or you meant begging for support for your project?”

She also recalled a moment from the past:

“Remember your first ever movie role? Was with me and my mama Mercy Johnson where the whole jealousy began because you couldn’t take your lines and wasted over 20 tapes… Even then, the gap was obvious.”

And to round off her message:

“Also, if you spoil for my eye, you don spoil for my ancestors too… It’s not by age, it’s by spirit and my lineage doesn’t play with disrespect.”

Regina ended with a final note:

“Don’t let pride blind you to the people who carried you. Last Warning !!!! ❤️”

The online back-and-forth shows no signs of slowing down — and all eyes are now on Mercy Johnson’s promised live session.

Ernest Addison’s home raid was lawful and warranted — Interior Minister

0

Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has defended the controversial raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, describing it as a lawful operation carried out under a valid court warrant.

On the morning of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, about 20 armed men, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, stormed Dr. Addison’s residence at Roman Ridge in Accra.

The operatives—some masked and wielding AK-47 rifles—reportedly disabled the home’s CCTV system and demanded access to alleged “vaults.” Dr. Addison denied the existence of any vaults or large sums of cash in his residence. Nonetheless, the team is said to have ransacked the property, leaving with the CCTV monitor and control unit.

No vaults or significant amounts of cash were discovered during the operation. The incident has been widely criticised by elements within the opposition, with a former central bank official calling the episode “unprecedented and disturbing.”

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the Interior Minister—who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Asawase—insisted the operation followed due legal procedure.

“Mr Speaker, prior to the operation, an ex parte search warrant was duly filed before the High Court in Accra on March 12, 2025, and was obtained in accordance with established legal procedures. The search was carried out in strict adherence to due process and in full compliance with the laws of the state. It was meticulously conducted in the presence of the former governor,” Muntaka stated.
