Pope John SHS declares war on exam malpractice

0

The management of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary in Koforidua has declared a zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice ahead of this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), warning that no student will be shielded if found culpable.

Authorities say the growing use of unapproved mobile phones among students is fueling indiscipline on campus and poses a serious threat to the school’s integrity. They are urging parents to play an active role in monitoring their children’s conduct, especially during the exam period.

Speaking at the school’s 67th Anniversary and Speech and Prize Giving Day on Saturday, June 14, Headmaster Rev. Father Benjamin Opoku Ohene stressed that students caught with mobile phones during exams would be handed over for disciplinary action to safeguard the credibility of results.

“Almost all our issues concerning indiscipline, one way or the other, are related to mobile phones. If you are caught in one subject, all your papers will be cancelled. It has started, and the implementation continues. We, the school, are ready to give out to anybody who is going to lead the school to calamity,” he cautioned.

In a related address, the Special Guest of Honour, Minister of Defence and school alumnus, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, encouraged students to embrace the government’s One Million Coders initiative. He described the programme as a transformative step towards digital empowerment.

“We are building capacity to solve real Ghanaian problems—how to improve healthcare with data, protect farms with smart tools, use AI to boost learning in classrooms, and defend our nation more intelligently,” Dr. Omane Boamah said.

Rethinking taboos to save the environment from pollution in Ghana

0

The conversation surrounding environmental management and its sustainability in our country has reached a critical point likened to a state of emergency. It is commendable that the president is, among other things, considering a ban on Styrofoam containers, commonly referred to as take-away packs, as well as many plastic products.

During the recent World Environmental Day, I attended a seminar focused on Climate Management that aligned deeply with the ongoing discussions in this field. Notably, there were no plastic materials or writing instruments present at the event. Even during the lunch break, typical bottled water and plastic drink containers were notably absent. Instead, we were provided with beverages in paper cups, served on ceramic plates, and utilised wooden pens for writing. The dustbins were also constructed from heavy paper. This event truly represented the principle that “charity begins at home,” demonstrating leadership by example.

Through thoughtful storytelling and an in-depth examination of the issues surrounding plastic waste and its detrimental effects on nature, it became evident that these challenges should concern every engaged citizen. I found myself ideating on how we arrived at this moment. The competition with waste, whether on land, at sea, or in the air, presents an open and urgent danger that requires immediate attention. The depletion of resources and their consequences on our climate affect everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. The health consequences as a result of plastic waste are significant and cannot be evaded, even by the wealthiest individuals.

As we consider our path forward regarding the impact of plastic waste on the environment and climate, it is crucial to adopt a strategic approach that acknowledges our history, assesses our current situation, and anticipates the future of this pressing issue. Understanding the past is essential to effectively addressing the current plastic epidemic we face.

It is essential to address what I refer to as the rethinking taboos as a strategy for combating plastic pollution and other forms of environmental degradation. Every society is rooted in its culture, and Ghanaians, traditionally, have been known for their adherence to taboos that guided their way of life. Years ago, the significance of these taboos was emphasised in educational settings, pointing out their relevance and role in preserving the environment.

However, with advancements in technology and evolving religious beliefs, many of these practices have been overlooked or replaced, leading to behaviours that contribute to environmental challenges. Taboos are often viewed as unacceptable or forbidden practices that are believed to provoke the wrath of deities, and they carry specific consequences. Whether one subscribed to these beliefs or not, the underlying reasons for many of these taboos provided considerable protection for both the environment and its inhabitants.

In the Eastern part of Ghana, where I grew up, it was a strict taboo to urinate or defecate near water bodies, as well as to dispose of waste in such areas. Certain forests were designated as sacred, prohibiting the felling of trees. I recently witnessed an incident at Labadi Beach where fishermen collaborated to return a large turtle to the sea. This is not the first occasion I have observed fishermen at the same beach safeguarding marine life, including the relocation of sea snakes, as they believe these creatures hold spiritual significance.

Turtles, among other species, are increasingly facing survival challenges due to the reckless actions of humans, both directly and indirectly. Human activities have significantly affected climatic conditions, impacting the well-being of various marine organisms. We must re-evaluate our practices and restore the respect that traditional taboos held for environmental conservation.

Research indicates that Accra and Aflao serve as significant breeding grounds for sea turtles that migrate from Brazil to Ghana. In Aflao, the local community often consumes these turtles as a food source, while in Accra, residents regard them as sacred creatures associated with the spirits of the sea, opting to protect them instead. This cultural perspective has resulted in a higher population of turtles in the waters off Accra compared to Aflao. Such traditions exemplify how taboos can play an important role in safeguarding nature from exploitation.

In light of this, I propose a revisitation of traditional practices that respect and protect the environment. For instance, I recall being taught as a child the importance of not speaking while eating, which not only served as a cultural taboo but also promoted mindfulness to prevent choking. Taboos can serve as valuable mechanisms for protecting various species, conserving natural resources such as water bodies, and controlling harmful practices like overhunting.

By revisiting and ‘intellectualising’ these taboos, we can deepen our understanding of cultural practices and align them with modern environmental conservation efforts. It is essential to incorporate these observations into environmental policies across various sectors, including education, industry, and corporate practices.

To achieve this, we must build an appreciation for cultural diversity by educating younger generations about progressive taboos within schools and communities. Teaching taboos through storytelling can be an effective method for imparting knowledge about environmental preservation through these traditional practices.

As we collectively address the pressing issue of environmental degradation, particularly about plastic pollution, it is crucial that we also remain focused on the future. The era of digitisation presents an opportunity to share content on environmental preservation to a wider audience. It presents a broader space to promote the idea of instituting traditional taboos to play a part in preserving Earth.

Ghana is accelerating efforts to boost intra-African trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area ,AfCFTA, agreement.

The country recently hosted the Ghana Intra-African Trade Fair ,IATF, 2025 Business Roadshow, which brought together government officials, businesses, investors, and executives from the African Export-Import Bank ,Afreximbank.

The government is providing firm-level support to over 2,000 MSMEs, including sensitization, market readiness training, and trade finance initiatives.

The event focused on promoting intra-African trade, with a theme of “Harnessing Regional and Continental Value Chains: Accelerating Africa’s Industrialisation and Global Competitiveness through AfCFTA”.

Ghana aims to move beyond commodity-based trade towards value addition for its traditional exports, such as gold, oil, and cocoa.

The upcoming Intra-African Trade Fair ,IATF2025, in Algiers, Algeria, is expected to attract over 2,000 exhibitors, 35,000 visitors, and facilitate trade and investment deals worth over $44 billion.

Postponed energy levy exposes government’s poor planning – Minority

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has strongly condemned the government’s last-minute decision to indefinitely postpone the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025, dubbed the “Dumsor Levy.”

In a scathing statement, the Caucus accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of “fundamental incompetence and hypocrisy.”

“This postponement exposes a government unprepared and unwilling to consult stakeholders before rushing into legislation,” the Minority declared.

“They criticised the levy as an unnecessary burden on Ghanaians already struggling with high living costs, warning that it would worsen transportation and food prices.

The Caucus also rejected the government’s justification for the levy, which cited global oil market instability.

“This is the same excuse they once mocked the previous NPP administration for using,” they said.

“Now, barely months in power, they’re singing a different tune—proof of their political opportunism.”

Demanding an immediate repeal, the Minority called on the government to table a repeal bill under a certificate of urgency.

“Ghanaians deserve better than trial-and-error governance,” they asserted, adding that the Akufo-Addo administration had maintained stable power without such punitive taxes.

The statement also highlighted failures in energy sector management, accusing the current government of stalling critical reforms.

“The Honourable Minister must present the Loss Reduction Programme documents to Parliament for scrutiny,” they insisted, stressing the need for transparency.

The Minority vowed to resist any further hardship imposed on citizens, urging Ghanaians to unite against the levy.

“This government promised relief, not more taxes. We demand a full repeal—nothing less.”

By Simon Asare

Accra, June 15, GNA – Kwame Opoku scored a late penalty for Asante Kotoko as they defeated Golden Kick 2-1 in the finals of this year’s MTN FA Cup.

It was the 10th FA Cup title clinched by the Porcupine Warriors, who would represent Ghana at the 2025-26 CAF Confederations Cup.

Division One League side Golden Kick started the game on the more dangerous side, putting Kotoko’s defenses on skates with relentless attacking play, especially on the wings.

Kotoko were very composed with play but struggled to put some decent passes together as the opponents dominated them.

Kwame Poku broke the deadlock for Asante Kotoko with a close-range shot in the 19th minute after Golden Kick failed to clear their lines.

Despite going down by a goal, Golden Kick were confident on the ball as they controlled the tempo of the game while creating some good chances.

Golden Kick deservedly pulled parity in the 34th minute after Bless Ege’s free kick stunned Kotoko goalkeeper Camara.

The Porcupine Warriors got lots of joy from corner kicks and nearly struck the lead in the 30th minute, but Petr Amidu’s header sailed wide.

Kotoko goalkeeper Camara pulled off a brilliant save to deny Golden Kick winger Zakari Mumuni on the brink of half.

Kotoko started the second half with a great chance to take the lead, but Peter Amidu’s curler was beautifully saved by Golden Kick goalkeeper Kelvin Kofi Saaba.

The start of the second was end-to-end, and a mistake nearly cost his side, but goalkeeper Camara pulled off a brilliant save.

The Golden Kick lads were dominant in possession, with fans applauding their dazzling play.

The introduction of Emmanuel Antwi midway through the second half seems to have given Kotoko some control in the midfield.

Peter Amidu had a glorious opportunity to win the game for Asante Kotoko in the 84th minute but shockingly missed from close range.

Referee Latif Addari awarded Kotoko a penalty in second half added time, and Kwame Opoku stepped up to win the game.

“I’m Sad Such Treatment Could Be Done” — Freddie Blay Slams Attacks on Ofori-Atta, Addison

0

A former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has expressed his disappointment over the recent treatment of some former government officials, particularly Ken Ofori-Atta and Dr Ernest Addison as reported by Ghana Web.

Blay criticized the government’s pursuit of the former Finance Minister and the raid on the residence of the former Bank of Ghana Governor, describing the actions as disheartening.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa FM, Blay emphasized that both men had made significant contributions to the country’s development during their time in office.

He highlighted Ofori-Atta’s dedication, describing him as “a very fine finance minister. Very resolute and extremely hard on what he believes in.”

Blay argued that such individuals, who have served the nation at high levels, should not be subjected to these forms of investigations and public scrutiny.

He warned that this approach could have long-term effects on national governance, potentially deterring qualified individuals from offering their expertise to the country.

According to him, “It would deter people, would intimidate others from showing themselves, offering their services for this country.”

Blay acknowledged that while there may be disagreements with certain decisions made by these officials, the manner in which they are being treated remains regrettable.

He called for a political culture that does not discourage service and patriotism, suggesting that the current trend might discourage capable individuals from stepping forward to serve in the future.

Kwame Opoku scores twice as Kotoko beat Golden Kick to MTN FA Cup triumph

0

Kwame Opoku was the star of the show as Asante Kotoko beat Golden Kick to win the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup title.

Opoku scored in each half of the game to seal the victory for Karim Zito’s side, who picked up a 2-1 win at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The Porcupine Warriors had a great start to the game after going ahead after just 16 minutes through Opoku, finishing off after a scrappy defending by Golden Kick.

Despite going behind, Golden Kick took control of the game and controlled the tempo, creating good chances in the final third but were unable to get back on level terms.

Their equaliser came in the 31st minute when Bless Ege beat the Kotoko goalkeeper with a brilliant strike from a free-kick to make it 1-1.

The two teams went into the break with the score level.

The two teams had loads of chances to go ahead after the return from recess but fluffed their lines at the very last minute.

With just added time until fulltime, Kotoko found luck on their side. Zito’s side were given a penalty after the referee judged the Golden Kick goalkeeper to have fouled Opoku in the box, the decision raising lots of questions.

However, the referee stood by his decision after consultation with his assistant.

Opoku stepped up and dispatched the penalty to restore Kotoko’s lead and eventually seal FA Cup triumph.

Fuel prices to drop on June 16 following postponement of D-Levy

Fuel prices to reduce at the pumps on June 15 Fuel prices to reduce at the pumps on June 15

Fuel prices are expected to drop at the pumps from June 16, 2025, following the postponement of the implementation of the GH¢1 Energy Sector Levy.

According to the Pricing Outlook by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, a litre of petrol is likely to be sold at GH¢11.77, representing a drop of between 1.1% and 2.25% from the price quoted in the first pricing window.

Diesel, on the other hand, is expected to go down by as much as 4.3%, pushing the price of a litre to GH¢12.13.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is expected to decline by 3.2%. This will result in a kilogramme being sold at GH¢13.30.

This will be the seventh consecutive time fuel prices are dropping this year.

The Chamber had earlier announced that fuel prices were likely to increase following the implementation of the D-Levy.

However, due to the Israel-Iran conflict, the government has postponed the implementation of the levy.

The reduction has also been attributed to the impressive run of the cedi in recent times.

However, rising global tensions have resulted in an increase in oil prices, as a barrel of Brent crude oil is selling around US$75.

According to reports, if crude oil prices continue increasing, consumers would pay more at the pumps in the next pricing window in July.

GCHRA 2025: Ghana to host Global HR Conference to shape Africa’s workforce transformation

0

Ghana will once again take centre stage in the global conversation on human capital development as it hosts the second edition of the Global Conference on Human Resources in Africa (GCHRA) from August 13-16, 2025, at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra.

The high-level event will bring together leading human resource professionals, business executives, and policymakers from across the world to examine how technology and strategic HR leadership are reshaping the future of work on the continent.

Organised in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), this year’s conference will be held under the theme “Leveraging Technology to Enhance Workforce Productivity and Optimise Efficiency.” The 2025 edition builds on the success of the inaugural conference held last year and will place a strong emphasis on AI-driven HR solutions, leadership agility, and workforce resilience.

SHRM President and CEO, Johnny C. Taylor Jr., who delivered the keynote address at the first edition, is expected to return this year with insights into Africa’s workforce challenges and prospects. In a recent post on LinkedIn, he highlighted the importance of investing in human capital development in Africa. “Human beings are the most important asset of every economy. With Africa poised to become the most populated continent on the planet, investing in HR development is more critical than ever,” he stated.

Taylor also referenced the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a major economic lever, noting that it is projected to serve 1.7 billion people and generate $6.7 trillion in spending by 2030. He urged African HR leaders to see the evolving workforce as both a challenge and an opportunity, especially as key industries such as digital technology, manufacturing, and renewable energy rapidly expand.

Rita Kusi, who leads strategic execution and planning for GCHRA, described the upcoming event as a critical moment for Africa’s workforce transformation. She said she was inspired by the continent’s progress in human capital development and called on businesses offering innovative technologies and services to participate. “I am truly energised by Africa’s remarkable progress, particularly in the development of its human resources. As Johnny C. Taylor Jr. aptly stated, the time for Africa is now—there has never been a more critical moment to invest in and support its workforce evolution,” she noted.

Kusi said GCHRA 2025 presents an exceptional opportunity for forward-thinking companies to connect with key decision-makers in HR from global organisations and showcase their solutions to those shaping Africa’s employment landscape. She encouraged early registration and affirmed the organisers’ commitment to providing a platform that blends global insights with local relevance.

The conference will take place both in person and virtually, with participants expected from across Africa, Europe, Asia and North America. With Africa’s population projected to double to 2.5 billion by 2050, organisers believe the time is ripe for impactful dialogue and collaboration on HR policies and innovations that can unlock the continent’s full economic potential.

UGBS and CIHRM organize corporate health walk to support Ghana’s first HRM Professorial Chair

0

The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, Ghana (CIHRM), have organized a corporate health walk as part of an awareness and fundraising campaign for Ghana’s first Human Resource Management (HRM) Professorial Chair.

The health walk, held at the University of Ghana on June 14, 2025, brought together Chief Executive Officers, HR practitioners of CIHRM, faculty members of UGBS, and students. The event raised awareness about the importance of engaging in moderate physical exercise to improve general well-being and productivity. It also served as a platform to appeal to the general public to support UGBS and CIHRM in raising the funds required to ensure the smooth operation of the Chair.

Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee, Dr. (Mrs.) Ellen Hagan, reiterated the need for all sectors in Ghana to embrace the Chair as a catalyst for national development through cutting-edge research, innovation, and human capital policy guidance. Dr. Hagan added that fundraising activities for the HRM Professorial Chair would continue throughout the year and urged public and private sector institutions—as well as individuals—to contribute to this laudable national agenda.

While encouraging continuous participation from key stakeholders, the Chief Executive Officer of CIHRM, Dr. Francis Eduku outlined the government’s plans to improve output in the public sector.

“Yeah, I think during the inauguration of the Council, the Minister of Education raised three concerns that the President of this country, His Excellency John Mahama, wants the Institute to tackle. One is punctuality, second is the large workforce size, and thirdly, absenteeism in the public service.”

He added, “The Minister cited that when he was in Free Zones, at that time, it was about 98. Now it’s over 300. So there is an issue we need to tackle. We need to match employees to productivity. We cannot have large numbers but limited production. I agree that unemployment is a national issue we must address, but that doesn’t change the fact that where there is no space—where people aren’t needed—we shouldn’t populate it due to political reasons.”

Other important events scheduled after the corporate health walk include a presentation at the CIHRM’25 Conference, engagement with policymakers, an HR Community Brunch, engagement with Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors, and public lectures.

During the CIHRM’25 Conference—scheduled for Wednesday, June 18 to Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Alisa Hotel in Accra—Dr. (Mrs.) Ellen Hagan will elaborate on the critical role of the HRM Professorial Chair in advancing national development and economic growth.

Ex-Boyfriend of Yaa Baby Breaks Silence, Warns Young Women Against Chasing “Soft Life”

0

In the wake of the tragic death of Yaa Baby, a young woman reportedly murdered under disturbing circumstances, her ex-boyfriend has spoken out, shedding light on their past and sending a cautionary message to young women across Ghana.

Speaking emotionally in a video circulating online, the ex-boyfriend recounted how he had been in a committed relationship with Yaa Baby, investing heavily in her from the proceeds of his family’s cocoa farm. However, according to him, Yaa Baby left him to pursue a relationship with a wealthier man — a decision he believes ultimately led to her untimely death.

“I spent a lot on Yaa Baby using our cocoa farm, but she left me to follow a rich guy. May her soul rest in perfect permanent peace. Life is short,” he said solemnly.Ex-Boyfriend Of Yaa Baby Speaks; Sends A Warning To All Young Ladies In Ghana| image 4

Yaa Baby, believed to be in her 20s, was allegedly shot by her current boyfriend during a visit to her village, where he had gone with two other companions. Though the exact circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, the matter is currently under investigation by the police in Yeji.

The ex-boyfriend’s remarks have stirred debate online, with many echoing his call for young people — especially women — to heed wise counsel and not be swayed solely by material comfort. Some have pointed to earlier warnings reportedly given by Yaa Baby’s grandmother, which may have been disregarded.

As investigations continue, the case has become a painful reminder of the potential dangers that can arise when trust and relationships turn deadly. The young man’s message is a stark one: “Let this be a lesson — money isn’t everything. Some choices can’t be undone.”

“Dr Bawumia Is the Only Vice President Who ‘Worked Very Well for Ghana’ — Samira Bawumia Declares

0

Former Second Lady Samira Bawumia has declared that her husband, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stands out as the most effective vice president in Ghana’s political history as reported by Ghana Web.

She urged party loyalists to support his quest to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections.

Speaking at a recent gathering of party members, Samira Bawumia described her husband as a dedicated public servant whose contributions have positively impacted the nation.

She stressed that no other vice president has demonstrated such commitment and competence in office.

“Let us support Dr Bawumia because he is a good man. He is the only vice president in Ghana’s history who worked very well for the country and served diligently,” she stated in a video circulated on social media.

According to her, Dr Bawumia has not only played a significant role in supporting President Akufo-Addo’s administration but has also laid the groundwork for his own leadership vision.

She believes it is time for him to be given the opportunity to drive his own agenda for national development.

Samira further argued that just as other political figures have been given second chances within the party, Dr Bawumia equally deserves the opportunity.

She expressed confidence in his ability to address the needs of Ghanaians, stating that lessons from the past have prepared him to serve more effectively.

However, She maintained that Dr Bawumia is equipped with both the experience and vision required to take the country forward, urging members of the NPP to rally behind him as he seeks to lead the party into the next phase.

Fuel prices to drop from June 16 following suspension of GH¢1.0 levy

0

The prices of petroleum products are expected to drop at the pumps from Monday, June 16, 2025, following the postponement of the GH¢1.0 Energy Sector Levy.

This is according to the Pricing Outlook Report compiled by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC).

According to the report, this will mark the seventh fuel price drop since February 16, 2025. The implementation of the levy would have led to significant increases in fuel prices.

Pricing Dynamics from June 16, 2025

Based on the pricing outlook from June 16 to 30, 2025, secured by from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs):

  • Petrol is likely to be sold at GH¢11.77 per litre, representing a reduction of 1.1% to 2.25% from the June 1, 2025, price.

  • Diesel is expected to see a significant drop of up to 4.3%, with prices at GH¢12.13 per litre.

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) may decline by 3.2%, bringing the price per kilogram to GH¢13.30.

Reasons for the Drop

COMAC attributes the projected decline to the cedi’s continued appreciation against the US dollar, which has helped cushion local pump prices despite rising prices on the international market.

This comes in the wake of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly the Israel-Iran conflict, which pushed Brent crude prices to about $75 per barrel.

Crude Oil Market Impact

The report notes that crude oil prices have surged globally following Israel’s military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. This has raised concerns over global oil supply and caused:

  • A 4.41% increase in crude oil prices (from $65.35 to $68.23 per barrel).

  • A 1.03% increase in petrol prices and a 3.94% rise in diesel on the international market.

  • However, LPG prices declined by 1.79%.

The U.S. also partially evacuated its embassy in Iraq, further escalating market uncertainty.

Impact of GH¢1.0 Energy Sector Levy

COMAC analysis shows that if the government had implemented the additional GH¢1.0 levy, fuel prices would have risen sharply from June 16:

  • Petrol would have increased by 9.1% per litre.

  • Diesel would have gone up by 8.25% per litre.

  • LPG, not included in the levy, would have still declined by 2.29%.

Officials, however, warn that if crude prices continue to rise, consumers should brace for possible price increases from July 1, 2025.

The body said it had uncovered numerous TV stations illegally downloading and airing content The body said it had uncovered numerous TV stations illegally downloading and airing content

The Copyright Office of Ghana has issued a stern warning to television stations across the country, cautioning them against broadcasting copyrighted content without proper authorisation.

The office emphasised that offenders risk severe legal consequences, including hefty fines and imprisonment.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 11, the Office’s National Anti-Piracy Committee said that it had uncovered numerous TV stations illegally downloading and airing movies, TV shows, sports broadcasts, and other creative works from streaming platforms without securing the required licenses.

“This practice constitutes copyright infringement and is a criminal offence under the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), as amended,” the statement said.

The committee noted that such violations are undermining Ghana’s creative industry, depriving content creators and rights holders of their rightful earnings and breaching both national and international copyright laws.

As part of immediate corrective actions, all broadcasters have been directed to cease airing any unlicensed content immediately, obtain the appropriate licenses from rights holders or authorised agencies, and to keep accurate records of all content acquisition agreements for verification purposes.

The Copyright Office also announced it will intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts in collaboration with law enforcement agencies to crack down on piracy.

“We urge all broadcasters to respect intellectual property rights and contribute to the growth of Ghana’s creative economy by complying with the law,” the statement concluded.

This recent development comes following concerns raised by various stakeholders in the entertainment sector over the various copyright violations by TV stations across the country.

Right to Dream triumphs at CAS over FIFA in landmark Ernest Nuamah transfer case

RTD won the case against FIFA over the allocation of devt fees linked to Ernest Nuamah (pictured) RTD won the case against FIFA over the allocation of devt fees linked to Ernest Nuamah (pictured)

Ghana’s acclaimed Right to Dream Academy has won a significant legal battle against FIFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the allocation of development fees linked to Ernest Nuamah’s record-breaking transfer, a report on African football news website AfricaSoccer.com has revealed.

The ruling, published by CAS and accessed by this outlet, annulled a controversial decision by FIFA that had directed solidarity contributions from Nuamah’s €25 million move to a club with only minimal involvement in the player’s early development.

The Lausanne-based court ruled in favour of Right to Dream and ordered football’s governing body to reassess its stance based on newly presented evidence.

CAS corrects history and redirects funds

At the heart of the case was Nuamah’s 2023 transfer from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, owned by Right to Dream, to RWD Molenbeek in Belgium, before a structured loan agreement with French giants Olympique Lyonnais.

The sale, facilitated by Lyon’s parent company, Eagle Football Holdings, was the largest ever in the history of the Danish Superliga.

Under FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, five percent of international transfer fees are reserved for clubs that developed the player between ages 12 and 23.

However, the governing body’s database listed Ghanaian side Stadium Youth Club as a primary beneficiary, despite the fact that Nuamah left them at around age eight.

CAS has now instructed FIFA to reassign those funds, determining that Right to Dream served as Nuamah’s true development club during the eligible period.

The court estimated Right to Dream is owed at least €283,919 from the initial sale to Molenbeek alone, with additional payments expected once Lyon’s obligation to buy is activated this year.

FIFA stance overturned

FIFA maintained throughout that it followed its records in good faith and denied any procedural misstep. But CAS disagreed, ruling that the registration data in FIFA’s Transfer Matching System (TMS) was outdated and failed to reflect Nuamah’s actual youth trajectory.

Right to Dream’s legal team, led by Danish sports lawyer Jes Christian Fisker, argued successfully that the inaccurate listing deprived the academy of vital funding and undermined the spirit of FIFA’s own regulations.

“It’s a major victory for development academies in Africa,” a source close to the proceedings said. “The precedent it sets could encourage others to challenge similar administrative errors.”

Complex path to Lyon

Nuamah’s journey to the French top flight came via an unconventional route. Though sold to Belgian outfit Molenbeek in August 2023, the Ghanaian international was immediately loaned to Lyon with an obligation to buy in 2024 – a structure made possible by the shared ownership under American investor John Textor.

While the transaction raised eyebrows in regulatory circles – some observers suspected a potential bridge transfer – both the Danish and French football associations cleared the move after assurances were given by relevant authorities.

Early years clarified

In an earlier interview with AfricaSoccer.com, Nuamah confirmed that he joined Right to Dream at age 10. Before that, he had spent two years with Real Soccer Angels FC, a local grassroots club that nurtured him from the age of eight.

Right to Dream has already made a resale payment of nine million Ghanaian cedis to Real Soccer Angels for their role in the player’s formative years.

Conversely, Stadium Youth Club, which only worked with Nuamah between ages six and eight, ceased operations years ago.

Had CAS not intervened, the solidarity payments designated for them would likely have been transferred to the Ghana Football Association, as per FIFA’s policy when a recipient club is defunct.

A rare setback for FIFA

FIFA rarely suffers legal defeats at CAS, making this decision a noteworthy blow to its credibility in managing youth development data and transfer payments.

By reversing the ruling and returning the matter to FIFA for correction, CAS reinforced the need for diligence in maintaining accurate player records, especially in less digitised footballing jurisdictions.

Right to Dream’s victory highlights the vulnerabilities of young African players whose career data often becomes fragmented when they move abroad.

The decision could embolden more academies across the continent to contest similar misallocations of solidarity compensation.

With Lyon set to finalise their purchase of Nuamah in the coming months, Right to Dream could benefit further from additional payments under revised conditions.

Meanwhile, Nuamah continues to thrive with the Ghana national team and remains on the radar of Premier League clubs, joining a long line of exports from the West African academy, including Mohammed Kudus, Simon Adingra, and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Ghana signs MoU with mining equipment manufacturer to enhance friendly mining practices

Michael Aidoo (R) after signing the agreement Michael Aidoo (R) after signing the agreement

The Western Regional Member of the Council of State, Michael Kofi Adjei Aidoo, has noted that Ghana has signed a partnership agreement with a leading mining equipment manufacturer, Jinpeng Mining Machinery Co. Ltd.

According to him, this partnership will provide access to environmentally-friendly mining equipment that will also help curb the devastating effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Announcing the agreement on Facebook, he wrote, “As part of efforts to drive sustainable progress and protect Ghana’s natural resources, I am delighted to announce a partnership and the signing of an MoU with Jinpeng Mining Machinery Co Ltd, a leading mining equipment manufacturer.”

He said the MoU will provide access to legal, environmentally friendly mining technologies, promoting sustainable practices, supporting Ghana’s efforts to curb galamsey, and fostering job creation through training and responsible resource management.

“This initiative aligns with Ghana’s commitment to protecting natural resources for the benefit of its citizens,” Aidoo added.

The Council of State member also added that Ghana’s transport sector needs to be modernised to revolutionise transportation in the country.

“In addition to mining, Ghana’s transport sector also requires transformative solutions to address challenges such as inefficiency, high costs, and reliability issues. Innovations like electric buses, smart fleet technology, and efficient maintenance systems can revolutionise the State Transport Corporation (STC) and Metro Mass Transit, reducing costs and improving reliability.

“We believe that modernising these sectors is crucial for Ghana’s sustainable progress and development. By partnering with global leaders, we can drive progress, restore our land, upgrade our infrastructure, and build a brighter future for Ghana,” he said.

Father’s Day: Honouring the pillars of strength and guidance

0

Accra, June 15, GNA – As Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate Father’s Day, Mrs Lordina Mahama, the First Lady, Sunday expressed her heartfelt appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his support and guidance to his family and the country as a whole.

In a touching message to her husband, Mrs Mahama wrote: “To my amazing husband and a truly wonderful father John Dramani Mahama! Happy Father’s Day!

“Thank you for your strength, guidance, and the endless love you give our family. Bless you always!”

Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), also exhorted fathers for their resilience and commitment to building stronger families and societies.

“To all fathers, your dedication, sacrifices, and love are the bedrock of our families and nations,” he said.

“We salute you!”

Father’s Day is an occasion to honour and appreciate fathers and father figures for their love, sacrifices, guidance, and unwavering support in the lives of their children and families.

Although the specific date of observance varies from country to country, many nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Ghana, India, and South Africa, commemorate the day on the third Sunday of June.

Despite its widespread recognition, for most countries, Father’s Day is not marked as a public holiday.

The modern concept of Father’s Day is believed to have originated in the United States in the early 20th century.

It was first celebrated in 1910, spearheaded by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington.

Inspired by Mother’s Day, Dodd sought to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent after the death of his wife.

Her advocacy led to the first local celebration, and over the decades, the idea gained national and eventually international traction.

In 1972, United States President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a permanent national holiday in the United States, celebrated on the third Sunday in June.

Father’s Day is more than just a celebration; it is a moment to reflect on the unique role fathers play in families and society.

It acknowledges the efforts of fathers who provide, protect, nurture, teach, and serve as role models.

For many, the day extends to grandfathers, uncles, guardians, mentors, and any male figure who has played a paternal role.

On this day, children and families express their gratitude through various gestures, handwritten notes, cards, thoughtful gifts, special meals, or simply spending quality time together.

Schools, community organisations, and religious institutions often hold events and services to mark the day.

Despite the variations in the date of celebration among various countries, the sentiment behind Father’s Day remains the same, recognising and cherishing the contributions of fatherhood and paternal bonds.

In today’s evolving world, the role of fathers continues to grow and adapt. From being caregivers and teachers to partners and leaders, modern fatherhood embraces empathy, presence, and emotional intelligence.

Father’s Day serves as a gentle reminder to pause and appreciate the quiet strength, resilience, and love that fathers and father figures bring to humanity.

Whether near or far, living or remembered, their impact endures in countless ways.

Set up the NFA board and give us two months to solve issue of copyright infringements

0

Ola Michael is a filmmaker, Ola Michael is a filmmaker,

Ghanaian filmmaker and entertainment personality, Ola Michael, has made a passionate appeal to the government to urgently constitute the board of the National Film Authority (NFA), saying the lack of action is allowing piracy to flourish unchecked.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, Ola identified three key institutions responsible for tackling the unauthorised broadcast of films on television: the Copyright Office, the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the NFA.

However, he lamented that the Copyright Office is under-resourced and the NFA currently lacks a functioning board, making it ineffective.

“If you want to show someone’s movie on TV, you need permission from the NFA and a release license from the filmmakers. If you flout that law, the NCA can sanction or even shut down your station.

“Right now, the NFA does not have a board. So, we can’t do anything,” he said.

Ola said he possesses a list of over 200 local TV stations that were caught airing copyrighted films illegally about five years ago.

He stressed that with a properly resourced NFA board, the issue could be resolved within just two months.

“If the board is set up and resourced, give us just 2 months and we will solve the problem,” he declared.

He urged the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, to expedite the formation of the board, noting that names have already been submitted by NFA executives: Kafui Danku-Pitcher and James Gardiner.

“We’re ready to work. We have the solution. But we need action! People are losing their investments. Some stations are even airing paid adverts during pirated movies and are profiting off someone else’s hard work,” he added.

His call adds to growing pressure on the government to protect Ghana’s creative industry from the damaging effects of piracy.

‘This eleventh-hour U-turn epitomises a trial-and-error strategy’

The government has postponed the implementation of the GH¢1 D-Levy The government has postponed the implementation of the GH¢1 D-Levy

The Minority in Parliament has taken a swipe at the government for its decision to postpone the implementation of the GH¢1 Energy Sector Levy due to rising tensions between Israel and Iran.

The government had planned to begin the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025, popularly referred to as the Dumsor Levy, on June 16, 2025.

But the Minority has labelled the reversal of the government’s decision as a “chaotic and inconsistent approach to economic governance.”

In a statement issued on June 15, 2015, they noted that “this eleventh-hour U-turn epitomises a trial-and-error strategy and reveals a disturbing lack of stakeholder engagement before the passage of the law” and was “wholly inadequate.”

They also noted that the government is being dishonest and hypocritical for using global tensions as an excuse when it did not accept the previous government’s excuse of global occurrences.

The Minority also demanded that the levy be completely abolished and not just postponed.

They also warned that the government must use its inability to implement the levy as a justification for the power crisis.

In conclusion, the Minority asked the government to remember its campaign promise not to impose new taxes on Ghanaians.

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has declared the 2025 President’s Cup as the beginning of a renewed effort by government to restore Ghana football to its former heights.

Speaking at the official launch of this year’s edition of the competition, Director at the Ministry William Katey said the Cup match reflects the government’s commitment to reviving the game and repositioning it for national pride and international relevance.

The event, held at the Accra Sports Stadium, unveiled plans for the match between long-standing rivals Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, scheduled for July 6.

The launch was attended by top football stakeholders, including Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) President John Ansah.

Katey, who represented Minister of Sports Kofi Adams at the event, described the President’s Cup as a pivotal moment in the government’s roadmap for football development.

“The honorable minister and the government are very committed to restoring Ghanaian football to its old glory, and the event [President’s Cup] is meant to kickstart this commitment. This event will serve as the stepping stone in this direction,” he stated.

Gov’t committed to establishing medical school in UE/R — Atanga

0

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing a medical school in the region to tackle the persistent shortage of healthcare professionals.

During a working visit to the Upper East Regional Hospital on Friday, June 13, Atanga revealed that discussions are ongoing between the government and the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) to kick-start the initiative.

He noted that the region continues to face a persistent shortage of health professionals, partly due to the reluctance of many to accept postings there.

According to the Regional Minister, concerns over security and limited prospects for career advancement remain key deterrents.

“If We address these issues by providing a training centre, like the medical school that is set to take off here in the region, and we train people who are already brought up here, it will help change their perception,” he said.

He recounted an incident in which an external group, seeking to implement a program in the region, reached out to his office for security clearance after receiving warnings that the area was unsafe.

“If you’re posting a doctor or nurse to the Upper East Region and the person is not from here, that perception of insecurity can affect their decision,” he noted.

He further explained that the lack of avenues for career advancement was a significant disincentive for health professionals accepting postings in the region.

“When medical personnel are posted here, and there are no institutions that allow them to further their knowledge or specialise, it discourages them from staying. However, if we establish a medical school, we are not only training locals who are more likely to remain here, but we are also providing a platform for professional development,” he said.
Beyond addressing the staffing gap, Mr. Atanga believes that the establishment of a medical school would open up the region for greater healthcare investment.

“If someone wants to build a health facility, they will consider the availability of doctors. But if they have to transport professionals from Accra or Kumasi, it becomes a disincentive. Investors shy away because of this,” he explained.

The Regional Minister also lamented the region’s vulnerability during the recent nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, noting that the Upper East Region has fewer private healthcare facilities compared to other regions.

“We were worst hit by the strike because of our limited private sector involvement in healthcare. If we had more private health providers, people would at least have an alternative. But even in the regional capital, such options are countable,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the establishment of the medical school would mark a turning point for the region’s healthcare system and its long-term development.

GH₵548m NSS scandal: ORAL is more public-interest than political – Prof. Khalid

0

The ongoing public discourse surrounding the National Service Scheme (NSS) scandal is fundamentally a matter of public interest rather than political manoeuvring, Professor Sharif Mahmud Khalid, Economic Adviser to the Vice President, has said.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 14, Prof. Khalid underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing the alleged irregularities that have plagued the vital national programme.

The NSS has been embroiled in a significant scandal involving suspected 81,885 “ghost names” on its payroll, with reports suggesting potential losses of tens of millions of Ghana Cedis monthly to the state.

The Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, recently announced intentions to file charges against 12 key suspects, including former executives, prompting intense public scrutiny.

Prof. Khalid asserted that the widespread public attention and discussion surrounding the NSS issue, particularly the specifics of the alleged fraud and the progress of investigations by ORAL, transcends partisan politics.

He argued that the nature of the alleged financial malfeasance directly impacts public funds and the integrity of a programme critical for Ghanaian youth, making it inherently a matter of national concern.

“This is not a political issue to be trivialised or confined to party lines,” Prof. Khalid stated on the programme. “When public resources are allegedly misappropriated, and a scheme meant to serve our youth is compromised, the public has a right, and indeed a duty, to demand answers and accountability. The intensified public interest, in this case, is a healthy sign of civic engagement.”

He emphasised that transparency from state institutions, including the Attorney General’s office, in providing updates on such cases, is crucial.

While acknowledging the complexities and necessary delays in legal processes – recognising that the “wheels of justice turn slowly” – Prof. Khalid supported the ongoing dialogue as a mechanism for building public trust.

The NSS scandal, which came to light with revelations of thousands of suspected non-existent personnel on the payroll, has sparked calls from various civil society organisations for thorough investigations and prosecution of those found culpable.

The Attorney General’s office has stated its commitment to recovering any misappropriated funds and assets linked to the alleged fraud, reinforcing the view that the core objective is to reclaim what rightfully belongs to the Ghanaian people.

Prof. Khalid’s comments contribute to a broader call for public interest cases to be treated with the seriousness they deserve, devoid of political spin, and with a steadfast focus on ensuring justice and protecting state resources.

Fathers must be good examples of God – Very Rev Prof Martey

0

Very Reverend Prof Emmanuel Martey is a former Presbyterian Church Moderator Very Reverend Prof Emmanuel Martey is a former Presbyterian Church Moderator

The Very Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, a Former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), has urged fathers to be good examples of God to their children.

Very Rev Prof Martey indicated that fathers were the representatives of God and therefore must ensure that their character and actions depicted that of God.

He gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) when he visited the PCG, Redemption Congregation in Tema Community Nine, on Father’s Day.

The day was used to climax the Men’s Fellowship week celebration on the theme: “Celebrating Our Heritage: Persisting in Mission – Men, Go Labour On.”

“In fact, the symbol of a father, that metaphor, is that which we use to introduce God to the children,” he said. He explained that because the first Christian prayers start with “Our Father,” children and the world see God in their fathers.

“If our children and the world will give their lives to God, it’s the character of the fathers that they see that will encourage them to go to God,” he added.

He emphasized that due to some fathers’ character of irresponsibility and wickedness, some people refuse to be Christians, as they see God the Father as the same as their earthly father.

Elvis Panford, Clerk of Session, PCG Redemption, in a sermon, urged fathers to be active instead of passive in the lives of their children.

Panford said: “You are a father because of the children you have. Just as doctors are there because of the patients and teachers are there because of learners, the same applies to fathers. You must be active in the lives of your children.”

He stressed that if parents, especially fathers, do not train their children well, they would grow to become a burden to the nation.

“The call of fatherhood is not optional; it is mandatory. Treat this call with urgency. Lead the children spiritually, and don’t shirk your responsibility because you have an issue with their mother,” he said.

PassionAir blames mid-air turbulence on weather, assures of safety commitment

0

Domestic airline, PassionAir has attributed Saturday’s mid-air turbulence on Flight OP 149 from Kumasi to Accra to ongoing seasonal weather changes, but was quick to assure the traveling public of its unwavering commitment to safety and operational standards.

The airline confirmed that passengers experienced discomfort due to “moderate turbulence” during the June 14 flight and extended apologies to those affected.

“We sincerely apologise to all affected passengers for the inconvenience caused,” it stated in a press release issued Sunday, June 15.

PassionAir linked the turbulence to what it described as “significant and sometimes unpredictable weather variations” brought on by the rainy season, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, crosswinds, and temperature fluctuations that disrupt stable atmospheric conditions.

“Our routes to and from Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale, Sunyani, and Wa are more likely to encounter varying levels of turbulence during this period,” the airline explained.

In response, the company says it is intensifying coordination with meteorological and aviation authorities to monitor weather patterns and ensure passenger safety.

“While we expect mostly slight to moderate weather disruptions, rare instances of severe conditions may occur due to these natural weather changes,” the airline added.

Reinforcing its safety credentials, PassionAir stressed that it continues to comply strictly with regulatory requirements.

“The safety and comfort of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority. We will take every necessary measure to ensure minimal impact on operations while maintaining the highest level of safety.”

The airline also expressed gratitude to passengers for their continued trust amid weather-related challenges.

A long-awaited breakthrough – CHOPSS celebrates inclusion in free SHS policy

Private SHS are to be included in the Free SHS program Private SHS are to be included in the Free SHS program

The Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) has described the government’s decision to include private senior high schools in the Free SHS policy as a “long-awaited breakthrough,” marking what many believe is a new chapter for Ghana’s education sector.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, June 14, the Public Relations Officer of CHOPSS, Richard Kyei Naphtali, could barely contain his joy.

“Excitement is an understatement. We are more than elated.

“We think that it’s welcoming news. It is a long-awaited news. It is something we’ve always wanted to have, and I think it is the greatest opportunity we’ve been given. It is good,” he said.

The announcement was initially made on Monday, May 27, by the Ministry of Education during the launch of revised school selection guidelines for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates.

Under the new policy, candidates can now choose up to seven schools instead of six, with private SHSs officially included in the list of eligible institutions covered by the Free SHS programme.

For CHOPSS, this is not just a policy change—it’s a hard-won victory after years of advocacy.

Naphtali noted, “This inclusion marks a turning point for private institutions.

“We have consistently called for a level playing field and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national education delivery. Today, we have that chance.”

The school selection window, which opened on May 27, was originally expected to close on June 6, but has since been extended to June 25 to allow students more time to make informed choices.

This is justice – Manasseh hails Mahama over Zoomlion contract termination

Manasseh Azure Awuni is an investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni is an investigative journalist

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for terminating the long-standing sanitation contract between Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), describing the move as a decisive and moral action that reaffirms his faith in Ghana’s democracy.

In a post on social media, Manasseh wrote:

“Your decision to discontinue this contract has reinforced my long‑held faith in not giving up on a just and noble cause even if nobody else believes in it.

“It’s been 12 years fighting, and your action is the most appropriate response to those who asked why I would not give up and move on, when nobody was prepared to discontinue the contract. In a significant way you have restored my faith in our democracy.”

The Zoomlion-YEA contract, originally set up as a 19-year sanitation agreement, has long been the subject of public scrutiny and investigative reports alleging mismanagement and inefficiencies.

Manasseh was one of the most vocal critics, consistently spotlighting questionable aspects of the contract in a series of reports over the past decade.

Following a formal petition submitted by Manasseh with fresh evidence of systemic mismanagement and post-expiry payments, President Mahama announced the termination of the contract, stating that it would not be renewed.

He has further directed that all payments made to Zoomlion after the contract’s expiration be audited.

Beyond ending the controversial deal, the President also revealed a policy shift — future sanitation contracts will now be awarded through competitive regional bidding to ensure cost-effectiveness and service improvement.

The move, according to officials, is expected to free up significant funds that will be used to increase the salaries of street sweepers to “a more liveable income.”

Additionally, contracts related to fumigation services under the YEA will be reviewed, with poorly performing ones facing possible cancellation.

Postponed energy levy exposes government’s poor planning – Minority

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority leader
