Nabil Alhassan recounts how Lumba insisted Ofori Amponsah be dropped from Valentine show

0

Event organiser Nabil Alhassan has revealed that the late highlife icon Daddy Lumba once demanded that Ofori Amponsah be removed from the lineup of the Valentine show scheduled for 15th February 2025.

He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z that the request came after all arrangements had already been agreed.

While preparing for the Valentine concert held at the Accra International Conference Centre (Grand Arena), Nabil said he and his team had finalised a list of supporting artistes when Daddy Lumba placed a call through Serwaa Amihere to insist Ofori be dropped.

“We made our first payment and publicity started. One day I saw Serwaa Amihere calling me. She said Daddy was on the line and wanted to speak to me about something going on. He said ‘Nabil, how are you?’. I want you to take Ofori off the show,” he recounted.

When Nabil pressed for a reason, he said Lumba claimed Ofori had not been included in the initial list of performers. When reminded that Ofori was part of the arrangement, Lumba then asserted he had heard Ofori had made negative remarks about him.

Nabil said he was stunned, given that Ofori had performed at Lumba’s birthday party just days earlier.

That notwithstanding, he noted that Ofori Amponsah performed at the event.

According to Nabil, that was the second time he had tried to secure Daddy Lumba for a show. His first attempt in 2012 failed because he could not raise the GH ₵300,000 fee Lumba demanded.

The show, organised by Nabil Alhassan and his Event Factory Ghana team as Valentine with Daddy Lumba, drew strong attendance and is already regarded as one of Lumba’s standout concerts.

Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu on 29th September 1964, passed away on 26th July 2025 at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

He left behind a legacy of over 33 albums and a catalogue of timeless hits such as Aben Wo HaSika AsɛmTheresaMakra MoYentie Obiaa, and Ohia Asɛm.

Our creative industry has everything except sense

Bullgod lamented the industry’s failure to harness its potential Bullgod lamented the industry’s failure to harness its potential

Artiste manager and entertainment critic, Bullgod, has expressed concern over the current trajectory of Ghana’s creative industry.

Despite the abundance of talent and resources, he noted that the sector suffers from a lack of vision and a clear growth strategy.

Speaking on ‘The Chat’ on Channel One TV on Saturday, October 4, 2025, during a discussion about Sarkodie’s Rapperholic Homecoming Concert, Bullgod lamented the industry’s continued failure to fully harness its potential.

“I keep saying this all the time: we have everything, we have the resources, but we don’t have the sense to use them. We don’t have to go elsewhere to do anything; we have everything here,” he said.

He noted that while Ghana boasts of immense creative talent, progress has been hampered by poor planning, inadequate investment, and weak institutional support.

Bullgod called on stakeholders, including government agencies, corporate bodies, and industry leaders, to adopt a more strategic and visionary approach to developing the creative economy, stressing that mindset change is key to unlocking its full potential.

Diddy’s legal team to appeal sentence

0

Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy

Sean “Diddy” Combs will appeal his federal conviction and four-year prison sentence, his attorneys have stated.

The hip-hop mogul, 55, was sentenced Friday to four years and two months in prison and fined $500,000 after being convicted of transporting people across state lines for sex.

He was acquitted of the most serious charges, sex trafficking and racketeering, that could have kept him locked up for life.

Defence attorney Marc Agnifilo said the team plans to file the notice of appeal “in the coming days,” calling both the trial and sentence flawed.

“Both the guidelines calculation and the sentence took account of conduct for which Mr. Combs was acquitted by a jury. We contend this amounts to legal error,” the lawyer said.

Combs has already spent about a year behind bars since his 2024 arrest, meaning he could walk free in roughly three. There’s no parole in the federal system.

The conviction followed a sensational Manhattan trial that exposed years of alleged abuse, manipulation, and violence.

Jurors heard graphic testimony from multiple women who said Combs forced them into degrading “freak-off” sex sessions fueled by drugs and alcohol.

Diddy’s defence attorneys argued that prosecutors misused the century-old Mann Act, which makes it a federal crime to transport someone across state lines for prostitution or other illegal sexual activity, and criminalized what they described as “consensual conduct.”

Combs has been held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center since last year, but it’s not yet clear where he’ll serve the rest of his sentence.

A transfer to a low-security prison near his Miami mansion remains possible.

Bryan Acheampong begins 9-day Greater Accra tour to rally NPP delegates

0

Having begun his campaign in his home region, the Eastern Region, Dr. Acheampong has so far been warmly received with great enthusiasm in every area he has visited.

Delegates and party faithful have embraced his message of hope, unity, and empowerment with renewed optimism for the NPP’s future.

His campaign theme, continues to resonate strongly across the country, especially among grassroots members who believe the party needs a new direction following the disappointing 2024 general elections, which many described as the NPP’s most humbling defeat.

Dr. Acheampong’s campaign seeks to restore confidence within the party by promoting inclusivity, strengthening internal structures, and prioritizing results over rhetoric.

He maintains that the NPP requires a bold, unifying, and results-oriented leader capable of rebuilding confidence, energizing the base, and leading the party to victory in 2028.

During the Greater Accra leg of his tour, Dr. Acheampong will meet delegates and stakeholders in constituencies such as Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, Amasaman, Ablekuma West, Odododiodioo, Madina, Dome-Kwabenya, Ashaiman, Weija-Gbawe, Tema West, and several others.

The Bryan Acheampong for President campaign team says its focus remains on rebuilding the NPP from the ground up—uniting its base, rewarding loyalty, and delivering power that truly works for the people.

5,000 agric graduates to be deployed under Feed Ghana Programme – Vice President

0

The government will soon deploy 5,000 graduates in the fields of agriculture and veterinary science to support the implementation of its flagship Feed Ghana Programme across the country.

This initiative is expected to turn research findings into practical solutions while providing modern extension services to boost agricultural productivity.

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang made the announcement at the 2025 Asogli Yam Festival held in the Volta Region on Sunday, October 5.

In her address, she highlighted the significance of the Feed Ghana Programme in addressing key challenges facing the agricultural sector, including erratic rainfall, post-harvest losses, and poor market access.

She reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting vegetable cultivation and other agribusinesses through the provision of modern farming technologies.

“This year, under the Ministry of Agriculture, the Feed Ghana Programme is being rolled out with tangible support including significant allocations that have been made to agriculture in 2025. Supporting programmes like the Vegetable Development Project and the famous ‘Nkok) Nkititi’ poultry,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.

She explained that the government’s plan includes deploying thousands of skilled young people to work directly with farmers across the country.

“This also includes 5,000 graduates in agriculture and veterinary science who will be deployed across the country, including the Volta Region, to work side by side with farmers providing modern extension services, sharing new techniques and helping bridge research and practice,” she added.

To encourage greater youth participation in farming and veterinary services, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government was prioritising the creation of credit facilities and agribusiness training programmes in the Volta Region.

She also described the celebration of the Asogli Yam Festival as a platform to inspire young people to take up careers in agriculture and to honour farmers for their contributions to national development.

Ghana To Host 2025 African Women Conference In Nov.

0

Conference

By Joy Odigie

The Republic of Ghana will host the 2025 African Women Conference (AWC) to discuss pathways for advancing gender equity, leadership, and sustainable development across the continent.

A statement by the Chairperson Planning Committee, Aisha Adamu in Abuja and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the conference will hold from Nov. 26 to 28.

The high-level conference, themed “Legacy Meets Innovation: Women Forging New Pathways for Africa’s Sustainable Development,” will provide a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange.

According to Adamu, the conference will seek policy dialogue and partnership building aimed at strengthening women’s participation in governance, innovation, and economic empowerment.

She said the 9th edition of the conference was expected to feature keynote addresses, plenary sessions, and strategic roundtables.

The AWC would attract distinguished personalities including First Ladies, Ministers, Members of Parliament, Heads of International Organisations, Civil Society Leaders, and Women in Business from various African countries.

Adamu said that the choice of Ghana reflects the country’s enduring commitment to democracy, inclusivity, and the empowerment of women.

“This decision to shift the conference from South Africa to Ghana follows broad consultations with partners, delegates, and regional coordinators across Africa.

“The shift is not a deviation but a strategic step to enhance accessibility, inclusiveness, and participation—core values on which AWC was founded,” Adamu said.

Adamu added that countries like Namibia, Morocco Rwanda, the Gambia Ethiopia, Zambia, and now Ghana in West Africa had hosted previous editions, while Nigeria was expected to host the 10th edition in 2026.

She said that this year’s edition would focus on digital inclusion, climate resilience, leadership mentoring, and financing for women-led enterprises — critical areas shaping the continent’s development agenda.

The 2025 gathering is expected to produce a Joint Communiqué and Action Framework that would guide national and regional policies toward deepening gender inclusion and institutional reforms that uplift women and girls across Africa.

NAN reports that the African Women Conference, since its inception, has served as a rallying point for African women to share experiences.

It strengthens solidarity, and chart actionable steps toward achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainabled Development Goals (SDGs). (NAN) www.nannewsngr.com

‘I love you, I’m sorry’

0

Three months ago, Sean “Diddy” Combs fell to his knees in a Manhattan courtroom after a New York jury acquitted him of charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

“I’m coming home,” he said, turning around to face his family, who had supported him every day of the trial.

On Friday, a subdued version of the hip-hop mogul sat emotionless and still in his chair, as the judge sentenced him to over four years in prison.

After Judge Arun Subramanian finished reading his sentence, the rapper turned around to look at his family and appeared to mouth the words: “I love you, I’m sorry.”

It was a quiet moment to mark the end of a chaotic eight-week trial that forever altered the public’s image of Combs, once one of the world’s most famous rappers. The jury saw graphic videos of Combs’ so-called “freak offs” – sex parties he had filmed featuring hired male escorts and his ex Cassandra Ventura and “Jane”, an anonymous victim. They also saw a video that had previously gone viral of him beating Ventura in a hotel hallway.

In July, a panel of 12 New Yorkers acquitted Combs, 55, of sex trafficking and racketeering charges, which carried the potential of life in prison, but found him guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution.

His attorneys hoped he would be out of prison in a matter of weeks, asking the court for a sentence of 14 months, 13 of which he had already served.

Prosecutors had accused Combs of running a criminal enterprise to coerce women into unwanted and drug-fuelled sex acts. Although he had been acquitted of those most serious of those charges, sex-trafficking and racketeering, they had asked for a sentence of over 11 years in prison.

Ultimately, Judge Subramanian told a downcast Combs that his crimes and abuse of his ex-girlfriends warranted 50 months in prison.

As he told the court that Combs had used his fame and power to “subjugate” his victims, the music mogul did not look up, remaining expressionless for the judge’s 20-minute speech. His entourage of over 30 family members were packed in the courtroom behind him.

During the all-day hearing, the court listened to hours of speeches from several of his attorneys, his children, a pastor and a criminal justice reform advocate who told the court that Combs was a changed and sober man since detention.

They also watched a video compilation from his legal team showing him with his children as well as the funeral of his former girlfriend Kim Porter, the mother of some of his children who died in 2018.

But the court did not hear from the victims themselves, after one person who planned to speak, Mia, a former assistant of Combs who testified anonymously, pulled out after the defence wrote a letter calling her a liar.

Subramanian called the letter “inappropriate”, and thanked the “strong women” for coming forward with the allegations against Combs, telling them they weren’t “just speaking to 12 men and women in the jury box”.

In lieu of their own statements on Friday, Subramanian read several of the victims’ remarks from testimony, telling Combs: “These were serious offences that irreparably harmed two women.”

Combs himself addressed the court for the first time since the beginning of his trial.

Breathing a large sigh before standing to read his speech, he pleaded with the judge for “mercy”.

He read with glasses from a piece of paper in front of him, trying to maintain eye contact with the judge as he told him: “I have nobody to blame but myself.”

He broke into tears as he turned around to face his family and tell his mother: “I failed you as a son.”

It was not the first time tears were shed during the hearing.

Many of Combs’ supporters cried as six of his seven children came to the podium to ask the judge for a light sentence, telling him they needed their father. The three daughters and three sons huddled together with their arms wrapped around each other as several of them cried while speaking to the judge.

The judge said during his sentencing that he had taken into consideration Combs’ family ties, but said he also had to take into account the damage he had caused to his two victims.

The crimes were serious, he added, noting they took place even after a federal investigation and the leak of a video showing him beating Ventura in the hallway of a hotel.

“A history of good works can’t wash away your record,” he said.

But, he told a dismayed Combs, who twice tilted his head up and sighed, there was light at the end of his jail sentence.

“Mr Combs, you and your family, you are going to get through this,” he said.

When the judge was done giving his speech, Combs gave a quick nod to his dozens of family members and friends, before slipping quietly back through the door to be taken back to a federal jail in Brooklyn.

NLA-KGL deal backed by law—Razak Kojo Opoku clarifies misconceptions

0

By Daniel Adu Darko

Accra, Oct. 5, GNA –Mr Razak Kojo Opoku, former public relations officer of National Lottery Authority (NLA), has refuted claims by some media outlets, including the Fourth Estate and its Executive Director, Mr Sulemana Briamah, that the National Lottery Authority (NLA) breached the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722) through its partnership with KGL Technology Limited.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency to clarify his article titled “Public Education About National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722) and Lottery Regulations, 2008 (L.I. 1948)”, Mr Opoku described such claims as “misleading, legally unfounded, and borne out of misinformation,” stressing that the NLA-KGL partnership is fully backed by existing laws governing the lottery industry in Ghana.

He said contrary to assertions that only the NLA can operate online lottery systems such as the 5/90 USSD and web-based platforms, Act 722 provides clear distinctions between “operating” and “selling” lottery products and allows for partnerships and licensing arrangements.

“To operate lottery under Act 722 means to conduct and supervise lotto draws, which remains the exclusive function of the NLA. However, the Authority is also empowered to license third-party companies to sell its products under its regulatory powers,” Mr Opoku explained.

He cited Sections 5 to 14 of Act 722 and Regulation 12 of L.I. 1948 as legal bases for licensing companies such as KGL Technology Limited to retail NLA’s 5/90 products via USSD and online platforms.

Mr Opoku further indicated that Section 35(2) of Act 722 explicitly prevents the NLA from directly retailing lottery products to the staking public, hence the need to rely on licensed marketing companies and technology collaborators.

He said: “It is therefore false and misleading for anyone to claim that NLA can manage USSD and web-based lottery sales independently. The law does not support such retail activity by the Authority itself.”

Mr Opoku explained that under Section 2(4) of Act 722, the NLA was also empowered to enter collaborations, partnerships, or joint ventures to operate games of chance.

He argued that this provision formed the legal foundation for the NLA-KGL partnership, which he described as the most successful licensing arrangement in the Authority’s history.

“Since the partnership began, KGL has contributed more financial resources to the NLA and the state than any other licensee. The data clearly shows that the collaboration has significantly enhanced revenue generation,” he noted.

Mr Opoku dismissed allegations of corruption in the NLA-KGL arrangement, stating that the partnership was regularly supervised and reviewed by the NLA Board, in accordance with its powers under Act 722.

He accused critics of misinterpreting Section 2(3) of the Act, which called for a special lottery to raise funds for vulnerable groups, noting that the provision referred to a specific product that the NLA was yet to implement, not to the entirety of its revenue.

He also urged media critics to focus on what he termed “the real problems” confronting the NLA, such as illegal lottery operators who dominate nearly 80 per cent of the market without contributing taxes, and outdated commission structures that heavily burden the Authority’s finances.

Mr Opoku concluded that the NLA-KGL agreement aligned fully with the Authority’s operational, regulatory, supervisory, management, and partnership powers as outlined under Act 722 and L.I. 1948.

“The NLA-KGL deal is the best license agreement ever issued by the Board of the National Lottery Authority. It has delivered value to the state, to NLA, and to GRA, and deserves national support, not needless attacks,” he said.

Cedi depreciation pace eases – Report

0

The pace of the Ghana cedi depreciation eased over the past two weeks The pace of the Ghana cedi depreciation eased over the past two weeks

The pace of the Ghana cedi depreciation eased over the past two weeks, with both interbank and retail markets recording modest dips.

In the interbank market, the US dollar cedi pair closed the fortnight at GH¢12.40 from GH¢12.15, marking a 2.02 per cent dip compared to 6.17 per cent recorded two weeks earlier.

In the retail market, the cedi remained range-bound between GH¢13.40 and GH¢13.50 against the US dollar, posting a 0.74 per cent decline from 6.72 per cent.

In parallel, the pound and euro closed at midrates of GH¢18.05 (-2.49 per cent) and GH¢15.70 (-1.59 per cent) from GH¢17.60 and GH¢15.70, respectively.

“We note that the slowdown in the cedi’s depreciation confirms our earlier expectations of stability, supported by stronger FX [foreign exchange] inflows and softer market sentiments.

“Looking ahead, we maintain a cautiously optimistic near-term outlook, with seasonal FX inflows from commodity exports expected to filter through”, Databank Research said in a report.

It acknowledged that heightened corporate demand, particularly from the services sector ahead of the festive season, may create upside risk.

However, it expects sustained forex support from the Bank of Ghana, underpinned by a strong reserve buffer and positive expectations around the International Monetary Fund’s fifth programme review to anchor its outlook.

In addition, the ongoing U.S. budget stalemate could sustain dollar softness, providing further support to the USD/GHS pair.

Meanwhile, the cedi began this week going for GH¢13.70 to the US dollar in the retail market.

Its year-to-date gain is 15.00 per cent to the American greenback.

In another development, the government missed its treasury bills target just a week after recording an oversubscription, as some investors continue to prefer fixed deposits and the Bank of Ghana bills.

According to auction results by the Bank of Ghana, the government recorded a 37 per cent undersubscription of the short term instruments.

The Treasury received GH¢3.486 billion of the total bids, but accepted GH¢3.463 billion.

A little over 76 per cent of the bids came from the 91-day bill.

About GH¢2.66 billion of the bids were tendered. The uptake was GH¢2.65 billion.

For the 182-day bill, GH¢705.7 million of the bids were tendered. The bids accepted were estimated to be worth GH¢695.3 million.

Similarly, GH¢119.5 million of the bids were tendered for the 364-day bill. About GH¢116.5 million of the bids were accepted.

Meanwhile, the yield on the 91-day bill increased by 5.0 basis point to 10.50 per cent.

That of the 182-day bill also shot up to 12.39 per cent from 12.36 per cent the preceding week.

“Dear men, Protect your women from this “b!tter” feminism culture rampaging everywhere. Speak to them daily, work on your woman’s mind. A simple “I love you, you’re amazing” and other supri supri should suffice,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday, October 5.

Fishers Welfare Scheme launched in Shama

0

The Fishers Welfare Scheme has been launched at Apo-Bakano in the Shama Municipality of the Western Region to promote the social well-being and financial security of fishers in the area.

Under the scheme, canoe owners are required to contribute a mandatory amount of GH¢100 monthly into an ADB account. The fund will cover health insurance, free health screening, accident and incident benefits, input credit allowances, and a partial withdrawal option after 24 months of continuous savings.

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Madam Emelia Arthur, who launched the scheme, lauded the initiative by the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association, describing it as a timely intervention to lift many fishers out of periodic poverty.

She noted that climate change had made it necessary for fishers to adopt sustainable practices to improve harvests and cautioned against the use of dynamite, light fishing, and unapproved chemicals by women in fish preservation.

Madam Arthur further announced that the Cape Three Points area had been declared a marine protected zone and urged fishers to comply with the directive to safeguard marine resources.

She added that crew safety and security remained a major concern for the Ministry and explained that the recent delay in the supply of premix fuel was due to rehabilitation works at the Tema Oil Refinery. She, however, assured that supply would soon stabilise as the government had cleared all outstanding debts.

President of the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association, Nana Kweigyah, said the welfare of fishers was vital to the survival of the fishing industry and commended the Ministry for its continued support to artisanal fishers.

He, however, called for the introduction of a dedicated insurance scheme for fishers and appealed that materials and fishing equipment supplied under government interventions be given directly to canoe owners rather than through intermediaries.

Widal tests unreliable, reform food vendor certification to curb typhoid – Prof Ernest Yorke

Professor Ernest Yorke is Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association Professor Ernest Yorke is Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association

The Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Professor Ernest Yorke, has called for urgent reforms in the certification of food vendors, warning that the immunological tests currently used by local assemblies are unreliable in detecting typhoid carriers.

Speaking at a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme on “Current Update in the Diagnosis and Management of Typhoid (Enteric) Fever” organised virtually by the Greater Accra Division of the GMA on Saturday, October 4, 2025, Professor Yorke said, “The current immunological tests that District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Assemblies use to certify food vendors are unreliable.”

He continued, “They do not ensure that vendors who are chronic carriers of the bacteria do not contaminate food sold to the public. Stool examination to ascertain the presence of the bacteria is preferred and more reliable.”

Professor Ernest Yorke cautioned that many chronic carriers are asymptomatic and urged the Infectious Disease Society and other experts to prepare a position paper for engagement with the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and the Ministry of Local Government to push reforms.

Ghana Health Service deploys 20,000 doses of Mpox vaccines to W/R

Other speakers at the CPD, including infectious disease specialists Dr Bismark Opoku Asare, Dr Isabella Afua Asamoah, and Dr Adjetey Oliver-Commey, highlighted the epidemiology, diagnosis, management, and prevention of typhoid fever.

They noted that blood culture remains the gold standard for diagnosis, while the commonly used Widal test is limited by cross-reactivity and background antibody levels in endemic populations.

The experts also raised concern about antimicrobial resistance, recommending azithromycin or third-generation cephalosporins for treatment while stressing the importance of hygiene, sanitation, and food safety in prevention.

Dr Oliver-Commey revealed that Ghana is preparing to introduce typhoid conjugate vaccines, starting with food vendors before a nationwide rollout.

Legal Green Association urges sustainable path in galamsey fight

0

The Legal Green Association (LGA), a left-wing group of professional law students, has urged government and stakeholders to pursue sustainable alternatives in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In a position paper submitted ahead of planned civil society engagement on the matter, the Association stressed that outright bans on community mining would deprive residents of mineral-rich lands of their economic rights, while other communities continue to benefit from natural resources such as fishing and salt mining.

Citing provisions in the 1992 Constitution, LGA underscored that minerals are vested in the President in trust for the people, and that the state has an obligation to safeguard the environment for posterity.

However, it noted that successive administrations have struggled to balance the livelihoods of local communities with environmental protection.

“We are pleased to observe that government’s approach to addressing the impact of mining is to prioritise sustainable mining initiatives rather than prohibiting mining by communities and their residents,” the Association said.

Towards Sustainable Mining

The Association proposed a campaign under the theme “Towards Sustainable Mining” to guide future policy direction and public engagement. It outlined a number of measures to support responsible mining.

Green mining technologies and practice: Government should champion the adoption of environmentally friendly mining techniques, as seen in developed countries, to reduce energy consumption and minimize ecological damage.

Constructions of more water purification/treatment dams: Recognising the devastation of rivers by galamsey, the Association recommended investment in water purification dams along heavily affected rivers to support Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and restore ecosystems.

Polluter Pay Principle and Equity: LGA advocated for a “Polluter and Producer Pay” principle, under which companies, individuals, or institutions engaged in mining are held financially responsible for environmental restoration. It proposed a mandatory environmental levy on all mining operations, with proceeds directed into a Small-Scale Mining Fund (SSMF).

The fund would finance land reclamation, reforestation, water purification projects, tax waivers and subsidies for eco-friendly operations, as well as recognition and incentives for sustainable mining practices. Importantly, the Association stressed that traditional leaders and local communities should be directly involved in monitoring and benefit-sharing.

Establishment of regional sustainable mining training centers: To drive behavioral change, LGA called for the establishment of training centres nationwide to equip miners with green skills. It also proposed that community mining agreements (CMAs) should be mandatory for license approval, with explicit inclusion of women and youth in the process. In addition, it suggested the introduction of a compulsory Green Mining Certificate to ensure compliance.

Ongoing measures and monitoring: The Association expressed support for ongoing government interventions but urged stronger monitoring tools, including annual environmental audits, GPS mapping, drone surveillance, and stricter enforcement of backfilling, revegetation, and land-use zoning requirements.

Collaboration

The LGA emphasised that Ghana’s mineral future depends on striking a balance between economic needs and environmental stewardship.

“Through enforcement, collaboration with stakeholders, promotion of economic alternatives, and environmental justice, Ghana can win this battle,” it stated.

The Association pledged its readiness to collaborate with government, civil society, academia, and traditional authorities in shaping policies that make sustainable mining “real and irreversible.”

The statement was signed by its Leader, Festus Matey, and Head of Politics and Elections Affairs, Evans Mawunyo Tsikata.

Deputy Education Minister urges Africa to reposition TVET as first-choice pathway

The Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has urged African leaders to break away from the long-standing perception that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is meant only for students with weak academic performance.

Speaking at the Africa Skills for Jobs Policy Academy in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Apaak emphasised that TVET must be recognised as a first-choice option for learners rather than a fallback pathway.

“There is this tendency to believe that technical and vocational education is for students who are less competent academically.

We have a concerted plan of action to change this mindset. Vocational and technical education cannot be a second option — it must be a first option,” he stressed.

The Africa Skills for Jobs Policy Academy, running from September 30 to October 3, 2025, brings together policymakers, experts, and private sector players from across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Organised by the World Bank in partnership with the Government of Kenya and the Inter-University Council for East Africa, the academy seeks to tackle youth unemployment by aligning training with labour market needs and promoting upskilling in priority sectors.

Dr. Apaak revealed that the government is expanding access to technical institutions nationwide to enroll more students in skill-based education.

“Out of about 900 second-cycle institutions in Ghana, fewer than 300 are technical and vocational schools.

We are deliberately scaling this up to widen access,” he noted.

He further highlighted the government’s National Apprenticeship Programme, an initiative designed to support the estimated 1.5 million Ghanaian youth who are neither in school nor enrolled in any training programme.

“This programme provides competency-based training to certify and equip young people with employable skills, preparing them for deployment into the workforce,” Dr. Apaak explained.

Since January, the Mahama administration has positioned TVET as a cornerstone of Ghana’s education reforms and broader development strategy.

The Ministry of Education has rolled out policies and funding commitments to modernise technical institutions, upgrade training facilities, and retrain instructors.

Dr. Apaak underscored that reshaping perceptions and scaling up investment in TVET will not only help reduce unemployment but also build a skilled workforce to drive Africa’s industrialisation and economic transformation.

Government launches joint action plan to tackle illicit flows in extractive sector

Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson

The Government of Ghana has launched a Joint Action Plan (JAP) with key regulatory and enforcement agencies to strengthen the country’s extractive sector compliance with international Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing (AML/CFT) standards.

The move, sealed with the signing of a Joint Communiqué in Accra, signals a coordinated effort to curb illicit financial flows in the extractive sector, especially artisanal and small-scale mining.

The signing ceremony brought together major stakeholders including the Bank of Ghana, Financial Intelligence Centre, Ghana Gold Board, Minerals Commission, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Office of the Registrar of Companies, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Others are the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Ghana’s international partners, notably the British High Commission and the UK-Ghana Gold Programme, were also represented.

Delivering the welcome remarks on behalf of the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem described the Joint Communiqué as a demonstration of Ghana’s resolve to safeguard the integrity of our financial system, strengthen governance of the extractive sector, and align fully with international AML/CFT standards.

According to him, the vulnerabilities within the sector, particularly gold, could not be ignored given its central role in Ghana’s economy.

He said Gold remained a leading source of foreign exchange earnings, government revenue, and livelihoods for thousands of Ghanaians.

However, its prominence also makes it a target for illicit activities.

“If left unchecked, these risks undermine not only the credibility of the sector but also the stability of our broader economy,” Dr Forson cautioned.

Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko-Ampem, stressed that the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector would face intense scrutiny as Ghana heads into the 2026 Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Mutual Evaluation.

“Ghana cannot afford to be blacklisted. The costs would be too severe, higher borrowing rates, reduced investment flows, pressure on the cedi, and reputational damage. That is why this Joint Action Plan is critical,” he said.

The JAP, which emerged from a high-level roundtable in August, sets out clear responsibilities, timelines, and milestones for institutions involved in the gold value chain.

It mandates regular inter-agency coordination, monthly follow-up meetings, and progress reporting to ensure accountability and results.

For the government, the endorsement of the communiqué is only the first step.

“The true measure of our commitment will be in the effective implementation of the Joint Action Plan.

“With sustained effort and unity of purpose, I am confident that together we will succeed,” he later told participants.

Representatives of the partner institutions pledged their commitment to the reform agenda, noting that enhanced compliance will not only protect Ghana’s financial system but also boost investor confidence in the extractive sector.

MP for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem Constituency and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Samuel Atta Mills, has issued a scathing rebuke to an internal auditor of the Nima Polyclinic following the discovery of several financial irregularities during a committee sitting.

The incident, which was captured on a viral video showed the legislator, visibly angered by the auditor’s demeanor.

He accused the auditor of failing to provide proper documentation for payments, revenue losses, and other unrecorded expenditures.

“It does not smell good. And the problem is, it’s an internal audit. I’ve given him 48 hours to provide this information to the auditors. If not, he’s going to…,” Atta Mills was heard saying.

His anger was further fueled when he noted the auditor joking with his colleagues and smiling, leading to the threat.

“Look, sir, I can wipe that smile off your face right now. You think we are joking here? You pay car maintenance allowance to people and you don’t have any information on file,” he fumed.

PAC calls for prosecution of health ministry officials over procurement breach

He further directed the Director General of the Ghana Health Service to refer the matter to law enforcement agencies.

“Either you get the police involved or EOCO involved, because it doesn’t smell good,” he added.

The committee expressed grave concern over the lack of accountability in the facility’s financial management, particularly regarding payments for vehicle maintenance without supporting records.

The Director General, in response, assured the committee that he would personally follow up on the issue, promising to report back within 30 days.

Diddy’s ex publicist reveals moment star’s ‘dark side’ took over

0

As Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is finally sentenced to over four years behind bars, his ex-publicist revealed how the rap mogul’s ‘dark side’ took a turn for the worse.

Rob Shuter, Combs’ former publicist, revealed to the Daily Mail the disgraced star’s downward spiral and the ‘sick’ way Combs is likely reveling in the fame brought on by the trial that ended in a shock sentence of 50 months in jail.

On October 3, Combs hung his head as he received his sentence for prostitution charges and was further slapped with a $500,000 fine for the ‘savage’ abuse of his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura.

Shuter, however, believes Combs is far from receding from the spotlight and firmly declared that ‘Diddy not only can recover, he will recover.’

Yet, after working with Diddy for many years, Shuter admitted that Combs’ ‘dark side’ took over in disturbing ways as his fame grew.

‘When I was with him, there was a dark side to him. You know, he was moody, he was grumpy, he could be very impatient, he could be violent. However, it was probably about ten percent of what I saw,’ Shuter told the Daily Mail.

‘As time grew, as his fame grew, as the power he had grew, as the pressure grew, that ten percent expanded.’

The publicist conceded that fame, particularly at such a level as Diddy’s, can take its toll on stars.

‘I think there’s a lot of pressure in fame, and I don’t wanna be like “boo hoo poor celebrities, they’re all rich and too many people and bothering them.” There’s a real sense of being watched, of not being prepared for that,’ he continued.

‘Every time you’re on a red carpet, there’s pressure to perform. There’s pressure to be a dancing jester, and so after a while you get sick of that person and I think maybe that’s one of the reasons Diddy always changed his name.’

The rap mogul went by many names throughout his career, including Puffy, P. Diddy, and Puff Daddy.

‘He got sick of these people so he became a new person,’ Shuter added.

But Combs’ dark side would eventually lead him to a courthouse in New York and then to his prison cell after being found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

While evading more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering after he was acquitted, Combs’ trial became one of the most talked about after his 2024 indictment.

Shuter said, however, that he never saw the monster that Combs was painted out to be – at first.

‘When Cassie sued, I thought that she was a gold digger and I believed the Diddy spin – that this is somebody who is after his money – and it wasn’t until that tape was released did I change my mind,’ he said.

The tape showed Combs assaulting Ventura in the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles and went viral as the world was horrified by the violent scenes.

Combs was seen dragging Ventura down the hallway and throwing what appeared to be a vase at her.

Shuter admitted: ‘I feel really foolish now. I was saying that the side of Diddy that I saw was not that Diddy, and I didn’t believe that other side existed until that tape.’

However, according to his former publicist, Combs would see his current infamous reputation as a success.

‘Peak Diddy is right now and there’s a sick, perverse part of Puffy that is enjoying what is happening right now,’ Shuter said.

Shuter claimed that Combs’ always had goals of being ‘on the nightly news’ and ‘on the cover of newspapers,’ and through the trial he is ‘now the most talked about person in the world.’

‘There’s a sickness, I know this man, that he finally got what he wanted. For not the reason he wanted, but he now is what he always wanted to be – the most famous person in the world,’ he continued.

‘I think this is the peak of what he would consider success, which is attention.’

Despite the stain that the allegations against Combs and the trial that ensued brought upon the rap mogul, Shuter can see Diddy bouncing back into fame and success once more.

‘Diddy not only can recover, he will recover,’ Shuter continued.

Combs’ career was paved by what Shuter called marketing and PR ‘genius’ from the star.

‘He always knew how to not only expand a deal, but to make sure that he became the center of it. I used to joke that he could shrink to fit. If Puffy needed to be a square to fit a square hole, he’d be a square… If Puffy needed to be a Republican, he’d be a Republican,’ Shuter said.

‘It was a real skill. I think its easy to say this is pushy, this is vulgar, or this is rude. I don’t think that’s the case, I think it’s brilliant. I think he is a marketing, a PR genius. And if I was successful at all in that field, its because I learnt at the feet of Puffy.’

Rumors have already begun to surface of an upcoming tour as Combs’ continues to sit behinds bars, Shuter said.

‘He won’t stop, he can’t stop. He will be back at Madison Square Garden, I’m hearing rumors of tour plans already. There’ll be a documentary that’s made. He’ll turn this into a movie,’ he continued.

The publicist painted a disturbing image of the disgraced rap mogul, and said Combs ‘doesn’t feel the emotions we do.’

‘He doesn’t have the shame that we do, and so he’s gonna figure out how to make this a plus,’ Shuter said.

However, despite the outrage that the trial stirred, it was obvious to Shuter that Combs’ spotlight had not been dimmed.

Many fans were seen calling for the star’s release throughout Combs’ legal woes, with many posted outside of the courthouse showing their support.

‘You saw it outside the trial – I went down to the trial – and there was a lot of fans outside screaming and shouting and had more passion to him that I’ve maybe seen in ten years,’ Shuter said.

‘He has energized his base, he will play a racial element to this and get people very very excited…As sick as it is he’s gonna figure out how to make this a plus.’

Stop glorifying dubious wealth – Togbe Afede urges Ghanaians

0

The Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV, has called on Ghanaians to stop glorifying wealth of dubious origin and to stand firm against all forms of corruption, stressing that genuine wealth must come from hard work.

He urged citizens to embrace honesty, patriotism and diligence to restore Ghana’s image as a nation of integrity and prosperity.

Togbe Afede made the call at a grand durbar held at the Ho Jubilee Park on Saturday, October 4, to climax this year’s Te Za (Yam Festival) of the people of Asogli. The celebration was themed, “Together in honesty and purpose, we build a just and prosperous nation.”

He said honesty and respect for the truth were essential for national progress, lamenting that Ghana’s abundant resources had been mismanaged by “a few dishonest educated elite and politicians” over the years.

“Those who were assigned the duty of protecting the country rather chose to milk it dry,” Togbe Afede said.

He linked the problem of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, to unmitigated corruption and called for a united national front to tackle the menace.

Referring to a recent health report that revealed 134 suicides in Ghana last year, he said the disturbing figure reflected the hopelessness caused by a corrupt society.

Togbe Afede also called for a constitutional review to make corruption unattractive and swiftly punishable, urging members of the Operation Retrieve All Loot (ORAL) team to work diligently to expose and prosecute offenders.

He further encouraged the government to make the declaration of assets by public officials a hallmark of good governance, adding that Ghana could become a land of great joy if its leaders, chiefs and citizens cherished the truth.

The guest of honour, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, commended the people of Asogli for upholding their rich tradition and values.

She said the yam festival represented patience, fertility, renewal and community wealth, while also serving as a reminder of the duty to build a prosperous future.

“In the Volta Region, yam has been a source of sustenance, a symbol of renewal and a sign of community wealth,” she noted.

The Vice President said the government had prioritised food security and agricultural transformation under its Feed Ghana programme, which includes deploying 5,000 agricultural and veterinary graduates across the country to support farmers with modern techniques and research.

She announced that special attention would be given to vegetable farming in the Volta Region through greenhouse technology and irrigation projects to boost production for local consumption and export.

The Awafiaga of Asogli, Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, who is also the Dufia of Ho-Dome, called on traditional rulers to be fair and honest in their judgments, describing honesty as a vital foundation for peace and progress.

He also urged the government to intensify efforts against illegal mining before it engulfed the nation.

Among the dignitaries present were the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Laura Ranalli, members of the Diplomatic Corps, chiefs from Ghana and Togo, and visitors from across the world.

Savelugu SHS’s Richard W. Tiimob named Ghana’s ‘Most Outstanding Teacher’ at Ghana Teacher Prize 2025

0

Richard W. Tiimob, a teacher of the Savelugu Senior High School in the Northern region, has been named ‘Ghana’s Most Outstanding Teacher’ at the Ghana Teacher Prize 2025, held at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho in the Volta region.

The award, which includes a three-bedroom house, celebrates his exceptional contribution to education and his unwavering commitment to transforming lives through teaching.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Tiimob expressed deep gratitude to God, his family, students, colleagues, and school leadership.

He said, “Teaching has always been more than a profession for me; it is a calling to inspire, mentor, and transform lives. This achievement reflects the collective efforts of my students, colleagues, school leadership, and all stakeholders who support quality education. Let us continue to innovate, elevate, and inspire every learner so we can build a Ghana full of ambition and excellence.”

The award ceremony, themed “Elevating the Status of Teachers for Quality Education,” brought together dignitaries, educators, and stakeholders from across the country.

Dr Christian Addai-Opoku, Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), warmly welcomed Her Excellency, Prof Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of Ghana, emphasising that her presence affirmed the government’s commitment to a motivated teaching profession as a cornerstone of national development.

Dr Addai-Opoku highlighted the significance of World Teachers’ Day, set aside by UNESCO and the ILO to commemorate the 1966 recommendations, noting Ghana’s unique tradition of combining reflection with a grand celebration of teachers’ invaluable contributions.

He reiterated that elevating the conditions, recognition, and professional development of teachers directly strengthens the foundation of quality education for every Ghanaian child.

“The Ghana Teacher Prize, formerly known as the Priscilla Award, was instituted in 1985 by the Ministry of Education to recognise teachers’ immense contributions to national development.

In 2018, it was rebranded to align with global standards, positioning Ghanaian teachers on the international stage and affirming that they can compete with the best in the world,” Dr Addai-Opoku said.

Rev. Isaac Owusu, President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), stressed that teachers are not only classroom instructors but also community leaders, counsellors, and nation-builders.

He called on the government and other stakeholders to address critical issues affecting teachers, including delays in salary payments for over 6,000 newly recruited teachers, disparities in the Single Spine Salary Structure, and the need for improved accommodation and professional development opportunities.

“This year’s theme reminds us that a qualified, supported, and motivated teacher is central to achieving educational goals. When the teacher succeeds, the nation succeeds,” Rev. Owusu stated.

The 2025 celebration was made possible through the support of the Government of Ghana, private sector organisations, development partners, teacher unions, and the National Teaching Council.

On behalf of the NTC, Dr Addai-Opoku congratulated all nominees and award winners, noting that they are the torchbearers shaping the character, knowledge, and the future of Ghana.

As the ceremony concluded, Mr Tiimob encouraged his fellow educators to continue uplifting every learner, innovate, and strive for excellence. His message underscored the enduring role of teachers in shaping the nation’s future.

Haruna Iddrisu rallies teachers and youth to uphold discipline and integrity

0

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has called on Ghana’s teachers and youth to uphold discipline, integrity, and hard work as the foundation of national progress.

Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony in Accra, held under the theme “Elevating the Status of Teachers for Quality Education,” the Minister said the future of Ghana lies in the moral strength and professional commitment of its people.

“This issue is very important. Teachers and parents are watching your behaviour and character. The future is yours, the future of Ghana is yours. But be disciplined, work hard, and uphold integrity, and the future will remain yours,” he said.

Haruna Iddrisu praised the nation’s over 349,000 teachers for their dedication to shaping the next generation despite the challenges they face.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving teacher welfare through the Teachers’ Diplomatic Initiative, which will provide modern three-bedroom housing for teachers across the regions.

He also announced that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, plans are underway to establish a new campus of a public university in Keta, to be known as the School of Public Affairs, aimed at building capacity in leadership, governance, and policy.

“We remain committed to making education the cornerstone of Ghana’s transformation. When we invest in teachers, we invest in the nation’s future,” he said.

The Education Minister concluded his address by inviting Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to deliver her keynote remarks, describing her as “a symbol of knowledge, humility, and leadership.”

Food inflation debate always tilts in favour of NPP

0

The Founding President of the UP-Tradition Institute, Dr Razak Kojo Opoku, has argued that the ongoing debate over Ghana’s food inflation trends favours the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He asserted that despite a fall in the inflation rate, the cost of food remains significantly higher under the current administration.

According to data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose from 229.4 in August 2024 to 255.7 in August 2025.

Dr Opoku explained that this means households are now spending approximately GHS 26.30 more on the same basket of goods and services than they did a year earlier.

“Falling inflation does not mean that prices have gone down,” he emphasised. “It simply means that prices are rising at a slower pace. Families are still paying more for food and other essentials than they did before.”

He cited examples showing how the cost of living has continued to climb despite a reduction in food inflation from 19.1% in August 2024 to 14.8% in August 2025.

“A family that spent GHS 50 per week on food last year now spends around GHS 56 for the same basket,” he noted, adding that staple items such as kenkey have not seen any price reversals moving from GH¢2 to GH¢5 and remaining high.

Dr Opoku further observed that the rise in food prices under the current government demonstrates that the “illusion of lower food inflation” masks deeper economic challenges.

He attributed this misleading impression to two main factors base effects and currency stability.

“Prices were already abnormally high in 2024,” he explained.

“So, comparing 2025 against that inflated base makes the inflation rate appear lower, even though actual prices remain high.”

He added that IMF-backed currency stability has slightly eased prices of imported goods such as rice and wheat, but local staples like maize and gari have surged dramatically.

According to his data, the price of gari has risen from GHS 12 in 2020 to GH¢25 in 2025, while a bag of maize has increased from GH¢150 to GH¢400 over the same period.

Drawing a comparison between the two major political parties, Dr Opoku argued that the NPP’s management of food prices and inflation was more favourable to consumers.

He stated that under the NPP, when the CPI was 229.4 in 2024, the cost of food was “record low and stable,” despite the higher inflation rate of 19.1%.

He interpreted the lower CPI as reflecting “increasing purchasing power, lower cost of living, and more stable prices.”

Conversely, he contended that the current CPI of 255.7 under the NDC government represents “reduced purchasing power, higher cost of living, and escalating food prices,” despite the nominally lower inflation rate.

Dr Opoku concluded by urging policymakers to focus on price stability, income growth, and social protection to provide real relief for Ghanaians.

“Until prices fall or incomes rise to meet living costs, celebrating ‘lower inflation’ is premature and misleading,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu has urged Parliament to impose stricter borrowing limits on future governments to prevent a repeat of Ghana’s recent debt crisis.

In a video posted on X on October 5, 2025, by Muhammad Yaasii, Haruna Iddrisu criticised former president Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration for excessive borrowing that led to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

He stressed that such setbacks should never happen again, calling for parliamentary oversight to enforce fiscal discipline in line with Article 181 of the Constitution.

‘Debt restructuring was my darkest hour’ – Akufo-Addo confesses

“At no point should any government borrow beyond 60–65% of GDP. Parliament can limit that,” he stated.

He said the programme caused several key infrastructure projects to stall, including the Kumasi Airport expansion, the Takoradi Interchange, and the 1,000-bed Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital project.

“Part of your stalled projects, even Kumasi Airport when it was 98%, the 2% got stalled because of debt exchange. The Takoradi Interchange got stalled because of debt exchange. The thousand-bed hospital facility at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital got stalled,” he indicated.

Ambassador Namoale in African print, pose for a photo with Ghanaians in Sao Paulo Ambassador Namoale in African print, pose for a photo with Ghanaians in Sao Paulo

Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador to Brazil, Nii Amasah Namoale, has held his first official engagement with members of the Ghanaian community in São Paulo, pledging to work closely with all Ghanaians in Brazil to advance national development and strengthen bilateral relations between Ghana and Brazil.

Addressing a gathering of community members, the Ambassador conveyed warm greetings from President John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the people of Ghana, thanking the diaspora for their contributions and for upholding the country’s image abroad.

“I bring you warm greetings from His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the people of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

“They send their appreciation and best wishes to all of you living and working here in Brazil.”

Mr. Namoale, who officially assumed office as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Federative Republic of Brazil after presenting his Letters of Credence, arrived in Brasília on September 18 and presented copies of his credentials to the Secretary-General of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 28.

His visit to São Paulo marks his first official engagement outside Brasília since assuming office.

The purpose, he said, was to introduce himself, listen to the concerns of Ghanaians in Brazil, and strengthen ties between the Embassy and the Ghanaian community.

“I stand before you today not as an Ambassador for some, but as an Ambassador for all Ghanaians living in Brazil — regardless of political affiliation, background, or belief. My doors are always open,” he assured.

Ambassador Namoale reaffirmed his commitment to supporting President Mahama’s ‘Reset Agenda’, which aims to transform Ghana’s socio-economic fabric and position the country for sustainable growth.

He emphasised that the role of the diaspora is central to this vision.

“Our government recognises the enormous contributions of Ghanaians living abroad.

The Ghanaian diaspora has officially been designated as the 17th Region of Ghana — a region of immense potential and influence,” he noted.

He announced that the government has developed a Diaspora Engagement Policy to guide the Embassy’s interactions with Ghanaians living in Brazil and across Latin America.

Copies of the policy will soon be shared with community members for review, after which a follow-up meeting will be held in São Paulo to discuss implementation strategies.

The Ambassador also commended the senior staff of the Ghana Mission in Brasília for their professionalism and for facilitating the ongoing biodata registration exercise aimed at ensuring accurate records of Ghanaians living in Brazil.

He said the data would enhance the Embassy’s ability to provide timely and effective assistance when needed.

Before concluding, Ambassador Namoale expressed deep gratitude to the Ghanaian community for their hospitality and contributions to national image-building.

“Continue to be law-abiding residents, good neighbours, and worthy representatives of our great nation,” he urged. “May our collective efforts strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Brazil.”

The Ambassador reaffirmed his commitment to open, inclusive, and responsive leadership, promising to work hand in hand with the Ghanaian diaspora to promote unity, patriotism, and Ghana’s development agenda abroad.

Government committed to agricultural growth – Veep assures at Asogli celebration

Togbe Afede welcoming the Vice President to the event Togbe Afede welcoming the Vice President to the event

Ghana’s Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has lauded the people of Asogli for preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Asogli Yam Festival, describing it as both a celebration of gratitude and a call to national renewal.

Representing President John Dramani Mahama at this year’s festival in Ho, the Vice President extended warm greetings from the President, commending Togbe Afede XIV, the chiefs, and people of Asogli for upholding a tradition that continues to unite communities and highlight Ghana’s agricultural potential.

“It is an honour to represent His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama at this year’s Yam Festival,” she said.

“This is an occasion for celebration and thanksgiving.

It is also a sacred reminder of our duty to build a future worthy of our heritage.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the yam, central to the festival, symbolises patience, renewal, and prosperity — values that define both the Asogli people and Ghana’s broader agricultural identity.

She, however, acknowledged that today’s farmers face new challenges such as erratic rainfall, post-harvest losses, and market instability.

To address these challenges, she highlighted the government’s comprehensive agricultural strategy under the Feed Ghana Programme, led by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, which places food security and agricultural transformation at the core of national development.

Among the initiatives she outlined were:

Significant budgetary allocations to agriculture in 2025 to support key projects like the Vegetable Development Project and the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative for poultry and eggs.

Deployment of 5,000 graduates in agriculture and veterinary science to provide extension services nationwide, including in the Volta Region.

Promotion of vegetable farming and greenhouse technology, particularly suited to the Volta Region’s fertile valleys.

Support for farmer cooperatives to improve access to markets and reduce production costs.

Investment in mechanisation, irrigation, and storage infrastructure to minimise post-harvest losses.

The Vice President emphasised that the Volta Region has the potential to become Ghana’s agricultural backbone under the Feed Ghana initiative, given its underutilised irrigation systems and favourable conditions for rice and yam production.

She also referenced recent stakeholder engagements by Eric Opoku’s Feed Ghana team, which encouraged farmers, cooperatives, and District Assemblies in the region to harness improved seeds, extension services, and irrigation facilities to boost yields and reduce food imports.

“At this moment of harvest, the Yam Festival becomes more than a cultural event — it is a platform for showcasing agricultural potential, mobilising resources, honouring hardworking farmers, and inspiring our youth,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called for renewed efforts to make farming attractive and profitable for the youth, noting that the government is prioritising land banks, credit facilities, and agribusiness training to modernise the sector.

She also highlighted the recent launch of President Mahama’s flagship Adwumawura Programme at the University of Ghana, which focuses on youth employment and entrepreneurship as key drivers of national transformation.

In her concluding remarks, the Vice President urged Ghanaians to see culture and progress as complementary forces in nation-building.

“The Yam Festival is not only about the past — it reminds us that culture and progress can work hand in hand,” she said.

“As we celebrate, let us pledge to support our farmers, strengthen our communities, and build a Ghana where every household has enough to eat.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang wished the people of Asogli a bountiful harvest and called for continued unity, peace, and prosperity across Ghana

How a royal visit changed the country in 1961

A photo of Queen Elizabeth II and Dr Kwame Nkrumah A photo of Queen Elizabeth II and Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Queen Elizabeth II, monarch of the United Kingdom and head of the Commonwealth, visited Ghana in November 1961, just four years after the country gained independence from British colonial rule.

Her visit came at a time of heightened political tensions under Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, who was consolidating power and facing criticisms for his increasingly authoritarian measures.

Despite concerns from British officials about safety and the optics of visiting a country with a leader who had imprisoned opposition members, the queen proceeded with the trip.

Sankofa Series: How Ghana spent £3m in 1959 on a new airport runway for Queen Elizabeth’s visit

Five days before her arrival, bombs exploded in Accra, one striking a statue of Nkrumah, signaling the volatility of the political climate and raising fears for the queen’s safety.

Yet Elizabeth remained determined to visit, having previously postponed a meeting with Nkrumah in 1959 due to her pregnancy. As head of the Commonwealth, she was conscious of the symbolic importance of her presence and the risk that postponing the visit could drive Ghana away from the organization.

“The Queen was not deterred. One reason she was reluctant to reschedule was that she had previously canceled in 1959 when she was pregnant with Prince Andrew. As head of the Commonwealth, the Queen did not want to insult Ghana by postponing the visit,” a report by the British Heritage noted.

At one point, Queen Elizabeth declared, “How silly I should look if I was scared to visit Ghana and then [Soviet leader Nikita] Khrushchev went and had a good reception.” She also told the Prime Minister, “I am not a film star. I am the head of the Commonwealth, and I am paid to face any risks that may be involved. Nor do I say this lightly. Do not forget that I have three children.”

The report added, “The other reason being that the Queen was aware Nkrumah was getting closer to the Soviet Union, which wanted to expand its foothold in Africa amidst the Cold War. The Ghanaian leader had even traveled to Moscow that October.”

However, the Queen’s trip went well. She was met by President Kwame Nkrumah in Accra, the nation’s capital. Huge crowds gathered to greet Queen Elizabeth as she met with dignitaries and several government ministers.

Queen Elizabeth’s visit had concrete political and economic outcomes. She ensured Ghana remained a committed member of the Commonwealth, even when she visited the young son of an imprisoned opposition leader a move that demonstrated goodwill without provoking political fallout. ‘

The royal visit also played a role in securing international funding for the Volta Dam, a major hydroelectric project central to Nkrumah’s development agenda. Following the trip, British and American governments facilitated financial support, strengthening Ghana’s infrastructure while limiting Soviet influence in the region.

Shop owners who defied sanitation day orders will face court on Monday – AMA

0

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has summoned several shop owners who defied closure orders during Saturday’s National Sanitation Day exercise, as part of efforts to enforce compliance with the city’s sanitation regulations.

According to citinewsroom.com report on October 4, 2025, the AMA’s Public Relations Officer, Gilbert Ankrah, said sanitation and public health officers swiftly responded to reports of non-compliance during the exercise.

He noted that the offenders will face legal action.

AMA summons 64 cattle owners to court

“What we noticed was that there were a couple of shop owners who had opened their shops, and quickly we had sanitation and public health officers moving in to deal with them. They were given summons and will be arraigned before court on Monday,” he said.

The nationwide clean-up exercise, held on October 4, was part of the government’s renewed sanitation campaign led by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, participated in the exercise in Accra alongside the Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, and the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

Ankrah described public participation as impressive and said the AMA was continuing mop-up operations in key areas, including Agbogbloshie, to clear remaining debris.

He also announced that the Mayor of Accra has declared October as Sanitation Month to sustain the clean-up efforts.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Ibrahim acknowledged logistical challenges that hindered the exercise, citing inadequate dustbins and the use of tipper trucks instead of compactors for refuse collection.

He assured that the government will address the issue by providing the necessary equipment.

Ahmed Ibrahim further noted that poor street lighting affects early-morning and night-time clean-up activities and said his ministry is working with the Ministries of Energy and Roads to resolve the problem across all 16 regional capitals.

The Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Ernest Yorke, has called for urgent reforms in the certification process for food vendors, highlighting the unreliability of commonly used tests in detecting typhoid fever carriers.

Speaking at a recent Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme, Dr Yorke stated, “The current immunological tests that District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Assemblies use to certify food vendors are unreliable.

“They do not ensure that vendors who are chronic carriers of the bacteria do not contaminate food sold to the public. Stool examination to ascertain the presence of the bacteria is preferred and more reliable.”

He added that many chronic carriers are asymptomatic and appear well and challenged the experts and the Infectious Disease Society to engage the GMA and other key stakeholders for reforms in certifying food vendors.

Mohammed Kudus promises more goals afte opening Tottenham acount – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Mohammed Kudus believes the floodgates have been opened after scoring his first Tottenham Hotspur goal on Saturday, 4 October 2025, in the 2-1 win at Leeds United.

Kudus, making his 10th appearance in all competitions, scored via a deflection in the second half to snatch victory for Thomas Frank’s side.

The Ghana assisted Mathys Tel to put Tottenham ahead before Leeds came out strongly to knot the score line courtesy a Noah Okafor close-range finish.

“It feels really good,” Kudus told Spursplay. “Something I’ve been working on for the past month, to score my first (Tottenham) goal and it will open doors for more to come.

“Sometimes it’s not about winning the first ball, it’s the reaction for the second ball and when I went inside, I just thought, ‘shoot in the corner’ and I’m so glad it went in.”

Tottenham became the first team to win at Elland Road in the league since September last year, but were forced to dig deep, showing their battling qualities under Thomas Frank.

Kudus added: “The game was less about tactics, it was about great determination and who wants it more because they were running and fighting for the ball.

“We knew that we had to match their intensity. That’s what the game was about and I think every one of us was on top to get the win.

“I love it, however the opponents want to play, we will definitely match up to that.”

Kudus is now justifying the £55 million the club paid to West Ham United for his services this summer.

Mahama’s endorsement could have positive or negative effects – Mussa Dankwah

Mussa Dankwah is the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics Mussa Dankwah is the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics

The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, has cautioned that any endorsement by President John Dramani Mahama in the race to select the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2028 elections could have unpredictable effects on the party.

Speaking on Citi FM on Saturday, October 4, 2025, Dankwah said while a presidential endorsement carries significant weight, it could either strengthen party unity or create deep divisions among supporters.

“It could have consequences both plus and negatives, and I think we shouldn’t think that we can hoodwink any group of people to go a certain direction. It could have an impact that could be negative or positive,” he stated.

NDC grassroots condemn Mussa Dankwah over ‘divisive’ succession polls

“He noted that some members would appreciate Mahama’s backing, but others might see it as divisive. There are those who will be happy that he has given an endorsement to somebody and there are those who will feel that the party will be torn apart if he does that,” he indicated.

Mussa Dankwah cited Kenya’s political experience as a cautionary tale.

“Remember in Kenya, Kenyatta went against Ruto. He went to endorse a candidate, but the party didn’t go with him let that be a lesson,” he cautioned.

His comments come in the wake of a new Global InfoAnalytics poll, which places Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu as the frontrunner to lead the NDC into the 2028 elections with 30 percent support.

He is followed by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia with 24 percent, and Finance Minister Ato Forson with 18 percent.

Other potential contenders, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, polled lower.

The poll also revealed that Haruna Iddrisu’s popularity rises to 48 percent in key swing regions.

Mussa Dankwah’s presidential ambitions polls breaking up NDC and Mahama government

However, without him in the race, support becomes closely divided between Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson, suggesting a potentially competitive and divisive primary if not carefully managed.

Farmers laud completion of Penyi – Ehi road

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Penyi-Ehi (V/R), Oct. 5, GNA – Farmers in communities along the newly constructed Penyi–Ehi road have expressed joy over the completion of the project, describing it as a major boost to their farming and trading activities.

They said the road, which was previously in a deplorable condition, made it difficult to access their farms and transport foodstuffs to market centres.

Work on the road began in 2024 under the previous government and was completed under the leadership of the current administration.

Mr. Courage Agbenyo, a farmer from Tadzi, one of the communities along the route, commended both the previous and current governments for their efforts in ensuring the completion of the project.

He expressed optimism that other feeder roads linking farming communities and market centres would also receive attention soon.

Madam Esiman Kornu, another farmer, recounted the hardships she and her family endured, especially during harvest seasons when transporting produce became nearly impossible due to the poor road condition.

Some motor riders at Penyi also shared their satisfaction with the improvement, saying the road has eased movement for residents and traders alike.

“Now, only a few side works remain for the road to reach full standard, but we are very happy. We hope other roads in the area will also receive similar attention,” one rider told GNA.

Meanwhile, the Ketu North Municipal Chief Executive, Rev. Martin Amenaki, assured residents of Ehi and adjoining communities that additional road projects were being planned to link Ehi to other towns and villages.

He reiterated the Assembly’s vision to transform Ehi into a modern, thriving community within Ketu North.

Infrastructure must rise above politics – Kennedy Osei Nyarko

0

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has called for continuity in Ghana’s road infrastructure projects, stressing that development must rise above partisan politics.

In a statement on the Kumasi Inner Ring Road Improvement Project, the MP commended the current government for proceeding with the project started under the previous administration.

“The decision to follow through is commendable and demonstrates the value of sustaining initiatives that bring long-term benefits to our people,” he said.

He emphasised that what matters most to the people of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region is not political credit but results.

“For the people of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region, what matters most is continuity, delivery, and the improvement of lives through better infrastructure,” he noted.

Dr Osei Nyarko, however, clarified that the project was not new, stating that preparatory works began as far back as March 2024 under the NPP government.

“Detailed technical assessments, project scoping, and discussions on financing were all completed before the change of administration,” he explained.

He further noted that the project forms part of a broader plan to fully dualise the Kumasi Inner Ring Road.

“The Southern Bypass is to be dualised with grant support from the Government of Japan, and the Western Bypass addressed under the Sunyani Road Phase 2 project,” the statement said.

The MP urged the current administration to sustain all critical road infrastructure projects initiated by the NPP.

“It is our hope that the current government will continue to sustain and complete all the critical road infrastructure projects inherited from the NPP government, including the Suame Interchange, Sunyani Road Phase 2, and the Konongo Bypass,” he added.

Kennedy Osei Nyarko said the Kumasi Inner Ring Road Project shows how governments, regardless of political colour, can ensure that well-designed initiatives are completed for the good of the people.

“This project is an excellent example of how government, irrespective of political party, must ensure that well-designed initiatives are seen through to completion,” he stressed.

Govt to deploy 5,000 agric graduates under Feed Ghana Programme

0

The government is set to deploy 5,000 graduates in the agriculture and veterinary fields to support its flagship Feed Ghana Programme across the country.

This move aims to channel research findings into practical solutions and provide modern extension services to enhance agricultural productivity.

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang announced this at the 2025 Asogli Yam Festival held in the Volta Region on Sunday, October 5.
