She said right after the presidential primary, the leadership of the party must take steps to unite and bring all disgruntled members on board for the 2028 elections.

“We must not wait for the election. After our presidential primaries, I believe we will all come together to work for victory in 2028. We must also pray for the party to bounce back from its current struggles.”

Hawa Koomson, who is lacing her boots to contest the NPP’s Women’s Organiser position, also appealed to supporters of the party to vote for her when the time comes.

“If God permits, when it’s time for our national election, I will contest for the National Women’s Organiser,” she said.

NPP to elect flagbearer and national executives

The NPP is preparing to elect new executives across the country and hold its flagbearer race.

The party has set January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primary.

So far, five bigwigs of the party have filed their nominations to contest for the flagbearer position.

Once a flagbearer is elected, the NPP will begin preparations for its National Delegates Conference to elect new executives to steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2028 elections.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia calls for unity in NPP

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that former Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, filed his nomination forms to contest the NPP’s flagbearer race.

While submitting the nomination forms at the NPP headquarters in Asylum Down on Thursday, August 28, 2025, he cautioned against actions that could potentially destabilise the party.

He said the founding members of the party worked hard to make the NPP one of the major political forces in Ghana, and that there was a need for the current generation to protect and hold it dearly.

Ghana’s River Volta and Russia’s River Volga

0

As winter slowly approached in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, the trees along the River Volga began to change colour (at the time of my visit).

Their leaves turned bright red, orange and yellow, making the view from above look like a beautiful painting. The Volga flows quietly through the city, dividing it into two parts.

Standing by the river, I could not help but think of home of Ghana’s own Volta River. Even though the Volga is a natural river and the Volta is a man-made lake, they share many similarities.

Both are important to the people who live around them.

I travelled to Nizhny Novgorod with other journalists from around the world to cover the World Youth Festival. On my way from the airport to my hotel, our car crossed a large steel bridge over the Volga.

The steel bridge over Volga

It reminded me of the bridge at Atimpoku in Ghana. Out of curiosity, I asked the driver about the river, and he told me it was called the Volga.

The Volga is the longest river in Europe, stretching 3,531 kilometres. It flows through Central and Southern Russia into the Caspian Sea.

Myself and other journalists on the bank of River Volga

In Ghana, the Volta River begins from the highlands of Burkina Faso and flows south through the country. It has three main parts, the Black Volta, the White Volta and the Red Volta, which join to form Volta Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.

Life along the Volga

The Volga River is full of activity. Along its banks, I saw big ships carrying timber, farm produce and goods from nearby communities into the city.

Ferries, yachts and small boats also moved across the water, transporting tourists and locals

Ferries, yachts and small boats also moved across the water, transporting tourists and locals. It was clear that Russia has invested a lot in using the river for transport.

There were also many luxury cars parked near the river. Newly married couples often take photos there and hire these cars for their wedding rides.

An industrial watercraft working on the Volga

Beautiful artworks decorate the riverbank, attracting tourists who stop to admire and take pictures.

I met Ibrahim Nebyev, a local driver. He told me that most of his passengers are people going to and from the river area. For him and many others, the river is a source of daily income.

Tourists having a look at the Volga from the foundations of the Kremlin

Close to the river is the Novgorod Kremlin, a large, old fort built to protect the city’s first settlers. It was originally made of wood and later rebuilt with stronger materials after a fire. Today, it stands tall as a symbol of history and pride.

Looking back home

Seeing all this made me think about the Volta River. In Ghana, especially between Atimpoku and Sogakope, many hotels and resorts are being built along the Volta’s banks.

The steel bridge over Volta Lake

This is similar to what I saw in Russia. But there’s one big difference, water transport.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) runs boats that connect parts of Ghana, but it’s not on a large scale. In Russia, both private companies and the government are involved.

There are boats for passengers and bigger ones for goods. In Ghana, some hotels have boats but use them only for their guests. If more private companies invest in water transport, the Volta could become just as busy as the Volga.

Culture and celebration

Next to the Volga is a large cathedral, the Cathedral of St Alexander Nevskiy. But many couples choose to have their weddings by the river instead of inside the church.

Cathedral of St Alexander Nevskiy

The riverbank provides a beautiful and affordable space for such special events.

We could do the same in Ghana. If we develop nice parks and open spaces along the Volta Lake, people could use them for weddings, events, or simply to relax.

A photo with a Russian tourist on the banks of Volga

God gave us the Volta through human effort; we should use it wisely and in ways that benefit everyone.

Ghana even has greener areas along the Volta than Russia has along the Volga. However, our infrastructure needs improvement.

Traditional transport on Volta lake

In Nizhny Novgorod, the roads leading to the river are smooth, and there’s even a railway connecting important places along the Volga.

In Ghana, the eastern corridor road from Tema to Atimpoku still needs a lot of work. Finishing this road and improving access would make a big difference.

Lessons from the Volga

In Russia, cafés along the Volga sell affordable coffee, so people of all backgrounds can sit by the river, relax and enjoy the view.

In Ghana, locals rarely visit the Volta River for leisure unless it’s a school trip or a special event.

The Volga has the Kremlin; the Volta has the Akosombo Dam. Both are symbols of national pride. But while Russians speak with excitement about the Volga, many Ghanaians don’t show the same connection to the Volta.

Akosombo Dam

My time in Russia taught me that the difference is not in the rivers, but in how people treat them.

The Volga and the Volta are like twin sisters, each with great potential. With the right investment and community interest, our Volta can shine just as brightly.

Bono Regional House of Chiefs calls for restraint

The Bono Regional House of Chiefs has expressed concern over recent disturbances in Sampa linked to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute.

In a statement issued on October 3, 2025, the House said the disturbances “have resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of properties” and strongly condemned the incidents.

“At an emergency meeting of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs held on October 3, 2025, members noted with grave concern and regret the recent disturbances at Sampa, which arose from the ongoing Sampa chieftaincy dispute. These disturbances have resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of properties. The House strongly condemns these disturbances,” it noted.

The Bono Regional House of Chiefs blamed the unrest on the alleged illegitimate process of entering the name of one party in the Sampa chieftaincy conflict into the register of the National House of Chiefs.

“It recalled that the Bono Regional House of Chiefs had previously rejected the Chieftaincy Declaration Forms because they did not meet the necessary requirements. The President and Registrar of the House were eventually cited for contempt for failing to comply with the Mandamus Order.

“To the dismay of the House, the Registrar of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs and the Acting President of Sampa Traditional Council were ordered in a contempt application to submit the said forms to the National House of Chiefs,” the statement said.

The House further assured the people of Sampa, Bonoman, and the public that it is taking steps to ensure a fair and expeditious hearing of the Sampa paramount stool petition.

“It is the hope of the House that this process will bring finality to the long-standing conflict,” it added.

In a video shared online on Sunday, September 5, 2025, the former Rants, Bants, and Confessions co-host clarified that the breakup with Donaldson happened ‘a couple of months ago.’

However, the influencer disclosed that she had no intention of discussing the details of the breakup or speaking any negative statements about her former partner. Gisela stated all these during a question-and-answer session with her followers, who had asked if she was now single.

Many of Gisela’s followers had wondered why she continued posting videos of Donaldson after they had broken up.

She said:

“That is the only reason why I’m speaking on it. Am I in a relationship? No. I have not been in a relationship for a couple of months now, way before all of those things on TikTok happened, way before people were going crazy on TikTok, way before people started even noticing in my vlogs.”

It is unclear how long Gisela and Donaldson have been together as a couple. However, their love affair first caught widespread social media attention in October 2024.

The attention followed Gisela’s claims on the Rants, Bants, and Confessions (RBC) podcast that her boyfriend sometimes swept the room while she was lying in bed.

Following that, when she praised her man for showering her with numerous expensive gifts and cash regularly, social media erupted. Some of her followers wondered why a man of means, as Gisela was portraying, would be playing the role of a woman in their relationship.

Fast forward to their breakup, Gisela pleaded to her followers and the public to be respectful towards Donaldson and to let the issue subside in peace.

“Can we just be respectful? Let’s just respect ourselves on the internet and then let it go,” she said.

President Mahama’s CSO Engagement Needless, Declare State of Emergency – Palgrave

The former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has criticised ’s engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on illegal Mining, describing it as unnecessary and misdirected.

My father taught me not to inherit his enemies – Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Oct 06, GNA – Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, has revealed that her late father, former President Jerry John Rawlings, advised her never to inherit his enemies.

She has also revealed that her strength in politics comes from a deep reliance on prayer and wisdom passed on to her by her late father.

A statement issued by the office of the Klottey Korle Lawmaker, said Dr Agyeman-Rawlings in an interview on an Accra based FM radio station, JoyNews’ “Talk No Dey Cook Rice Podcast, reflected on the hostility she had faced both as a child and as a public figure.

“To a large extent, I do pray a lot. You just surrender certain things and pray for the grace to move on and keep focused on what your purpose is,” she is quoted as saying.

She also recounted how her father’s counsel continues to guide her, saying, “I remember my father actually saying to me, ‘Do not make enemies of your parents’ enemies.’ It stayed with me, and it is something I’ve lived by,” she disclosed.

Dr Agyeman-Rawlings noted that she would never disown her parents or distance herself from their sacrifices.

“I will not publicly or privately turn my back on my parents, because I know what they did. I am also aware of the sacrifices they made,” she insisted.

She also pointed out that her father had apologised for the excesses of the revolution, even taking responsibility for actions carried out by others.

Despite this, she said, many who know the full story have chosen silence.

Her approach to politics, she emphasized, was shaped by these experiences.

“I do not take kindly to people on my platform abusing or assaulting other people. It is not something I endorse, because I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of something you may have had nothing to do with,” she stated.

To her, critics only expose their fear of conviction when they try to undermine her.

“Sometimes people see the level of conviction you have. They know that if they attack you enough, they can get you to move away from what you believe in. You must resist that, so they don’t win,” she added in the statement.

Frank Davies dismisses misconduct petition against Godfred Dame

The lawyer for former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, Frank Davies, has dismissed the “baseless” petition against his client for alleged misconduct during the Ato Forson ambulance trial.

The petition was filed by Richard Jakpa, the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, who also played a key role in the controversial ambulance procurement case.

Speaking to the media following Godfred Dame’s appearance at the CID Headquarters to assist with investigations into the matter, Mr Davies said: “A matter which has received judicial pronouncement. This Jakpa thing, is this the first time you are hearing it? No. This complaint has been made already. It has received a judicial pronouncement, so what? is it not obvious to you? Is it not obvious what the implications are? So I need no say.”

Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, on Monday, October 6, reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

This follows an official invitation linked to a petition filed against him by Richard Jakpa, a Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat.

Mr Jakpa has petitioned the CID, calling for an investigation into allegations that Mr Dame fabricated evidence during his tenure as Attorney-General in the high-profile ambulance procurement case, which involved Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, now the Minister for Finance, and himself as Third accused.

Church Leaders Urged To Prioritise Service Over Titles

Bishop Alfred Jackson addressing the participants at the conference

Bishop Alfred Jackson, Presiding Bishop of the Tabernacle Praise Association of Churches International, USA, has urged Christian leaders to shift their focus from titles and positions to genuine service and discipleship.

Delivering a message at a leadership conference hosted by the Kumasi branch of the church, Bishop Jackson said many church leaders risk being distracted by titles rather than the true calling of ministry.

“The Bible says if a man desires to be a bishop, he desires a good thing. But God also gave clear qualifications,” he explained. “It is never about the title but about doing the work of ministry. Jesus Himself did not come as ‘Apostle Jesus’ or ‘Archbishop Jesus’. He came simply to do the will of the Father.”

Bishop Jackson reminded participants that the role of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers is to equip believers for service and build up the body of Christ. “Satan is never afraid of titles,” he warned and added, “He fears the power of God and the anointing upon a believer’s life.”

The two-day conference, themed “Experiencing Divine Overflow”, was held on October 2-3 at the Tabernacle Praise Church premises in Kumasi. Lead Pastor of the Kumasi branch, Rev. F. Lendor, explained that divine overflow is about receiving abundance from God and extending blessings to others.

“When Jesus said out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water, He meant that God’s blessings are not just for us, but to overflow into the lives of others—through spiritual gifts, finances, or talents,” Pastor Lendor said.

The event also featured teachings on leadership, evangelism, the power of the Holy Spirit, financial stewardship and cross-cultural missions, led by international facilitators including Dr. Melvin G. Miller, Elder Latonya Buchanan, Evangelist Linda Simpson and Bishop Dr. Jackson G. Wean.

Organisers said they expect participants to return to their congregations with renewed energy and a stronger commitment to winning souls and building the church.

‘Demonstrate political will in galamsey fight’

The Minoirity has asked President Mahama to demonstrate political will in the galamsey fight The Minoirity has asked President Mahama to demonstrate political will in the galamsey fight

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has described President John Dramani Mahama’s recent engagement with selected Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey, as a publicity stunt designed to cover up his government’s failure to tackle the issue.

In a statement issued on October 6, 2025, the Caucus expressed concern over the worsening state of Ghana’s water bodies, forests, soils, and food crops due to illegal mining.

They cited the joint report by Pure Earth and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), which confirmed the heavy contamination of rivers and farmlands.

“It is clear that the encounter with the CSOs was a publicity stunt calculated to cover up the government’s failed attempts at dealing with illegal mining. It is obvious that the galamsey menace keeps worsening by the day.

“We are, therefore, surprised that amid increasing turbidity levels and the glaring browning of our water bodies, the heavy contamination of soils and food crops, as recently confirmed by the joint report by Pure Earth and the Environmental Protection Authority, the wanton destruction of our forest resources, and the indiscriminate degradation of our lands, the President of the Republic could look into the eyes of Ghanaians and tell us he is winning the fight against illegal mining,” the statement said.

Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, Ranking Member of the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, said the Mahama-led government has resorted to renaming previous policies and programmes introduced by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government rather than implementing decisive measures.

Watch as illegal mining destroys Nsuta–Bonsawire rail line

“It would be recalled that when the Akufo-Addo government came into office in 2017, the galamsey menace had reached a crescendo, and there were warnings that Ghana would have to import water if the destruction continued. To deal with this, government put a six-month moratorium on all forms of small-scale mining (legal or illegal), which was extended for a period of one and a half years. During this period, under the outstanding leadership of President Akufo-Addo’s government,” it said.

The Minority also questioned how, despite growing evidence of environmental degradation, President Mahama could “look Ghanaians in the eye” and claim he is winning the fight against illegal mining.

State of emergency won’t remove illegal mining permanently – Administrator of Stool Lands

The Minority warned that Ghana faces escalating health and environmental dangers, including irreparable damage to citizens’ vital organs, unsafe railway lines, and forests being turned into mining enclaves.

“Turbidity levels in our rivers are now dangerously high, vital organs of citizens are being irreparably damaged by contaminated food and water, railway lines have become unsafe, and our forest reserves are being degraded into mining enclaves. These are pressing realities that continue to endanger lives and threaten the very sustainability of our environment and our nation at large,” it noted.

The Minority Caucus urged the government to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate real political will, emphasizing that the fight against illegal mining requires bold, consistent, and effective action.

“We further urge President Mahama and his government to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate real political will. The fight against illegal mining can only be won through bold, consistent, and effective action. Anything less would be a grave abdication of duty to the people of Ghana and to future generations,” it added.

The Minority has sharply criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s recent meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on the growing illegal mining menace, dismissing it as a mere “publicity gimmick” intended to mask his government’s failure to effectively tackle galamsey.

On Friday, October 3, President Mahama met with CSOs to discuss the galamsey crisis, assuring that his administration is committed to defeating illegal mining.

Cancer in Ghana: Prof Akakpo warns of lifestyle and environmental risks

0

Anatomic Pathologist Professor Patrick Kafui Akakpo has raised an alarm over the rising prevalence of cancer in Ghana.

He attributed the trend to shifting disease patterns, changing lifestyles, environmental exposures, and a lack of proactive prevention.

He emphasised the need for early detection, vaccination, and healthier living to curb what is fast becoming a national health burden.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, October 6, Prof Akakpo explained that Ghana is witnessing a significant transition from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) with cancer now playing a central role.

“Infectious diseases are declining as we become more affluent and better at managing them,” he noted.

“But at the same time, we’ve adopted a lifestyle that is foreign to us more sedentary, less exercise, and a diet that doesn’t reflect our traditional foods. This lifestyle promotes cancer.”

Prof Akakpo stressed that palliative care helping patients live comfortably with cancer is essential but often misunderstood.

“That’s the point where people panic,” he said. “And when fear takes over, outcomes worsen. That’s when you hear all the horror stories about cancer.”

He pointed to a worrying paradox: while Ghana is becoming more westernised, access to key health interventions such as vaccinations has lagged.

“Take cervical cancer, for example caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The solution is simple: vaccination. But many are still not getting vaccinated,” he lamented.

“The same goes for Hepatitis B, which can lead to liver cancer. Our rates of infection are high, but vaccination coverage is not where it should be.”

However, Prof Akakpo welcomed the rollout of the HPV vaccine this October in Ghana and noted that Hepatitis B vaccination at birth has been ongoing, predicting a decline in related liver cancers in the coming years.

Prof Akakpo outlined the most prevalent cancers among Ghanaians:

  • Women: Breast cancer (most common), followed by cervical cancer.
  • Men: Prostate cancer leads.

He also highlighted a rise in:

  • Gastric and colon cancers
  • Oesophageal and liver cancers
  • Leukaemias and lymphomas (blood cancers)
  • Brain tumours
  • Bone and soft tissue cancers, especially in children (e.g. osteosarcoma)

“Every organ in the body can develop cancer. It all comes down to whether cells escape the body’s control mechanisms and become immortalised.”

Genetics and race, he said, play a significant role. African men are at a higher risk of prostate cancer, and in some cases, this risk is hereditary.

“Some genes fail to recognise and remove rogue cells. This is why some children develop cancers like retinoblastoma a genetic eye cancer at a very early age.”

Similar genetic links are seen in breast, ovarian, endometrial, and colon cancers, affecting both males and females.

“Black people generally have a lower risk of breast cancer,” he said, “but when it does occur, it tends to be aggressive. That’s why early detection is so crucial. If we wait until mid-stage, outcomes are poor.”

While genes matter, Prof Akakpo stressed that the environment plays an even greater role in cancer development for most people.

He identified several environmental and lifestyle factors:

  • Diet: Modern, refined diets often lacking vegetables and fibre increase the risk of bowel cancer.
  • Smoking: Despite regulations, second-hand smoke is common. “Smoking is linked to many cancers, especially lung cancer,” he said.
  • Occupational hazards: Exposure to chemicals and materials like asbestos raises cancer risks for factory workers and labourers.
  • Infectious agents: Beyond HPV and Hepatitis B, viruses like Epstein-Barr and HIV also increase cancer risk, particularly for lymphomas and other immune-related cancers.

“Many people do not have a genetic predisposition to cancer,” he explained, “but still develop it because of constant exposure to environmental and lifestyle risks. These are more potent simply because we live with them every day.”

Frank Davies dismisses misconduct allegations against Dame in Jakpa petition

0

Legal practitioner Frank Davies has dismissed as “baseless” the petition alleging misconduct by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame during the Ato Forson ambulance trial.

The petition was filed by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, who was also involved in the controversial ambulance procurement case.

Speaking to the media on Monday, October 6, 2025, Davies asserted that the matter is not new and has already received a judicial pronouncement.

“A matter which had received judicial pronouncement. This Jakpa thing, is this the first time you’re hearing it? This complaint had already been made and received a judicial pronouncement. Is it not obvious what the implications are?” he said.

Godfred Dame arrived at the CID headquarters accompanied by about seventy lawyers and leading members of the New Patriotic Party, including his former deputy Alfred Tuah-Yeboah and former parliamentary candidate Kojo Frempong.

In the petition dated July 23, 2025, Richard Jakpa alleged that the former Attorney General had attempted to influence his testimony in court by advising him to respond in a manner that would incriminate Dr Forson.

Ashanti NPP MPs reject Gabby Otchere-Darko’s claims over road project choices

“He suggested that during cross-examination I testify not based on matters personally perceived and understood by me, but based on his suggestions,” the petition stated.

Richard Jakpa further claimed that Dame instructed him to obtain a false medical excuse to delay his court appearance until the Attorney General returned from an overseas trip, a request he said he “declined” as “criminal, dishonest, and unethical.”

The petition describes the former Attorney General’s conduct as an attempt to “fabricate evidence and mislead the court” and calls on the CID to investigate the matter thoroughly.

Galamsey fight: CSOs are following their stomach – Ebenezer Nartey

0

‎Former Ablekuma Central MP, Ebenezer Nartey, has expressed doubt over the government’s seriousness and the role of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the fight against illegal mining, aka galamsey.

‎Speaking on Prime Morning News Flash, the former legislator criticised President Mahama’s decision to engage CSOs in drafting a roadmap to curb illegal mining.

He questioned their sincerity, saying some appear to prioritise personal gain over the nation’s interest.

‎ “I see the CSO people as people who follow their stomach,” he said.

‎Mr Nartey argued that from the presidency to the ordinary citizen, there is little readiness to tackle the menace.

He noted that despite the destruction of water bodies and farmlands, political leaders continue to pay lip service to the issue without taking decisive action.

‎The former MP also took a swipe at the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) president, accusing him of inconsistency.

He recalled that while the GJA president was vocal about galamsey under the NPP administration, but said he has now turned to praise the current government instead of maintaining the same critical stance.

‎Mr Nartey lamented that many individuals and organisations that once championed the fight against galamsey have gone silent.

The former MP described this sudden quietness as disappointing and a sign that many are driven by political or personal motives rather than a genuine desire to protect the environment.

‎He further questioned the President’s recent comment that a state of emergency would only be declared based on advice from security agencies.

According to him, such an approach reflects a lack of urgency and seriousness.

“If the president says he’ll call for a state of emergency only when there’s progress, then what progress is he talking about?” Mr Nartey asked.

12 galamseyers arrested for destroying Bonsawere railway line

0

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has praised the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Police Command for arresting 12 persons following the destruction of railway lines along the Akyim-Bonsawere stretch of the Western Railway Corridor.

Galamsey activities have severely damaged a section of the corridor at Bonsawere in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

The devastation follows years of deterioration and neglect of the railway infrastructure.

The affected portion of the line was left vulnerable due to the suspension of manganese haulage from Nsuta to the Takoradi Harbour for over a year.

In the absence of active railway operations, galamseyers encroached on the area in search of gold, further worsening the already dilapidated state of the rail line.

Speaking to Channel One TV during an inspection of the devastated railway on Monday, October 6, the Minister expressed surprise over the level of destruction and demanded the immediate prosecution of the 12 arrested individuals, as well as sustained monitoring of the railway.

Frank Davies dismisses “baseless” misconduct petition against Godfred Dame

0

Govt intensifies galamsey fight with 5-Pillar Strategy

0

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has outlined a comprehensive five-pillar strategy to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey,’ as part of efforts to safeguard Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and mineral resources.

The strategy emphasises Stakeholder Engagement, Regulatory Reforms, Law Enforcement, Reclamation, and Alternative Livelihoods as the foundation for eliminating illegal mining and promoting responsible small-scale mining across the country.

The sector Minister, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), who also doubles as the caretaker Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, said the first pillar seeks to emphasis the critical role of all Ghanaians, including Traditional Leaders, local authorities, academia, civil society organisations, and residents, to build consensus against illegal mining as the Ministry rolls out education campaigns to encourage local ownership of the fight and promote responsible mining practices.

Mr Buah reiterated this strategy last Friday when President John Dramani Mahama held a stakeholder dialogue with civil society in Accra on galamsey.

Under the second pillar Regulatory Reform, he said the Ministry will seek to strengthen the Licensing Regimes and monitoring mechanisms to ensure that only properly registered miners operate within the law.

According to him, it was driving a decentralisation agenda to ensure that District Mining Committees are a central part of the process of the issuance of mining licenses – they are to make recommendations to the Minerals Commission before any license is issued.

The sector minister said the Law Enforcement pillar would focus on sustained security operations against illegal mining activities, adding that this involves close collaboration with law enforcement agencies to clamp down on unlicensed operators while protecting legally compliant miners.

The establishment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) – as the operational nerve centre for the coordination of all anti-illegal mining law enforcement operations, he noted, was instrumental in the successes that the government has chalked so far.

The fourth pillar, he said, would focus on the rehabilitation of degraded lands and the restoration of polluted rivers. Under this pillar, two key initiatives have been launched – the Tree for Life Reforestation Programme and the Blue Water Initiative, respectively.

“Special attention is being given to communities severely affected by galamsey, with reclamation projects already underway in several regions. Forest Reserves and Water Bodies have also been declared Security Zones to be manned by the NAIMOS task force

The fifth pillar, another critical piece of the solution, is the provision of Alternative Livelihoods, which aims at providing sustainable economic opportunities for communities dependent on galamsey.

“The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) is fundamentally designed to achieve sustainable community transformation through three critical objectives; the promotion and facilitation of environmentally responsible cooperative mining, provision of vocational, technical, agricultural, digital, and entrepreneurial training to youth and women to equip them with relevant skills for alternative employment and self-employment.

President John Dramani Mahama pledged full transparency in the fight against illegal mining activities.

“I’m determined. We need your support. We need your criticism, your advocacy, your pressure. Continue to put our feet to the fire, and let’s win this fight together. Our great-grandfathers gave us a beautiful country with trees and beautiful rivers, and we should not hand over poisoned water bodies or desecrated forests to our children and great-grandchildren,” President Mahama said.

Mother of Achimota student who mysteriously died from negligence speaks to the BBC

Sonia Ofori Ansong is the mother of Kelvin Kofi Moses, the 16-year-old student who died in 2016 Sonia Ofori Ansong is the mother of Kelvin Kofi Moses, the 16-year-old student who died in 2016

Sonia Ofori Ansong, the mother of Kelvin Kofi Moses, the 16-year-old student of Achimota Senior High School, who died as a result of medical negligence in 2016, has opened up about the death of her son in an interview with the BBC.

Speaking in a snippet of the interview, which was shared on Facebook on Monday, September 6, 2025, Sonia Ofori Ansong recalled the events that transpired before the demise of her son.

She said her son called and informed her that he was sick and had been taken to the sickbay of the school.

Following this, she continued, she said she kept trying for hours to reach the authorities of the school but rather received a text that indicated that he was well, only to be told that he was dead hours later.

“The first term Kelvin went to school, he did not come back. He called that he was not feeling fine; he has been to the school clinic, they’ve given him Ibuprofen.

“I called the housemaster, but he never picked my call. I sent messages; he did not reply, only for him to come and give me an answer the following day that ‘Kelvin is fine’,” she said.

She added, “The very fateful Friday afternoon, I had a call from the housemaster that Kelvin has been rushed to Achimota Hospital.”

Ofori Ansong indicated that life has not been the same since the death of her son, saying, “For two years, I decided not to work. Who do I live for, because he was all that I had?”

Details about the case:

An Accra High Court, in May 2024, ordered the Achimota Secondary School Board of Governors, the Office of the Attorney General, and Dominic Danso, the Housemaster of Fraser House, to pay GH¢610,000 in damages for negligently causing the death of a 16-year-old student, Kelvin Kofi Moses.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame, came nearly eight years after the death of Kelvin Kofi Moses, graphic.com.gh reported.

The judge who presided over the case, Justice Tasiame, determined that Achimota School was negligent in providing medical care to the student, a residential General Arts student, leading to his death.

“It is my conclusion that Dominic Danso, Housemaster of Fraser House, breached his duty of care to the deceased,” graphic.com.gh quoted Justice Tasiame in the judgment.

Sonia Ofori Ansong sued the school and the government after the death of her son and got legal support from Child Rights International (CRI).

I didn’t want marriage or children — Ayesha reflects on life with NBA star Steph Curry

Steph Curry and his wife Ayesha Steph Curry and his wife Ayesha

Ayesha, wife of NBA star Steph Curry, has found herself back in the headlines after an old interview resurfaced online, sparking a debate over her candid reflections on marriage and motherhood.

In the interview with Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper, which originally aired in late August 2025, the wife of Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry revealed that she never envisioned the family life she now leads.

“No. So I didn’t want kids. I didn’t want to get married,” Ayesha admitted when asked if she had imagined being a wife and mother while growing up. “I thought I was going to be ‘career girl,’ and that’s it,” she said.

Clips from the episode recently went viral, prompting waves of commentary on social media. However, the full interview shows a more nuanced story.

‘Is football the fastest route out of poverty?’ – Saddick Adams clashes with Dr Kofi Amoah

Ayesha explained that while she once focused solely on a career in entertainment, meeting Steph changed her path entirely.

“It happened so early in my life. After we got married, we found out we were pregnant so quickly, I didn’t even have time to think about what I wanted anymore,” she added.

She went on to reflect on the challenges of balancing personal goals with early motherhood, a struggle many young parents can relate to.

“After my daughter turned one, I remember there being a shift. I love being a mom, but I love doing other things too. I needed to figure out what that looks like for myself now,” she recalled.

Paul Biya, the presidential candidate who doesn’t hold campaign rallies

0

A billboard advertising the candidacy of Cameroon's 92-year-old President Paul Biya A billboard advertising the candidacy of Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya

All except one of the 12 candidates in Cameroon’s October 12 presidential election have been crisscrossing the country to woo potential voters since the official two-week campaign period opened on Saturday, September 27.

While opposition candidates have been organising public rallies across various regions, incumbent President Paul Biya— who is seeking an eighth term after ruling uninterrupted since 1982 — has not held a single campaign rally with only a week to go until election day.

This is nothing new. The world’s oldest head of State and Africa’s second-longest serving leader — after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo — Biya, 92, is rarely seen in public, even during crucial campaign periods. Yet he remains a serial election winner, despite persistent questions about the credibility and transparency of the polls.

In 2018, Biya held a single campaign rally in Maroua, in the Far North Region bordering Nigeria and Chad, but went on to win the election with 71.28 percent of the vote.

Opposition leader Prof Maurice Kamto, who came a distant second with 14.23 percent, was disqualified from this year’s race. He has since urged Cameroonians to vote for an opposition candidate of their choice.

Biya has not publicly addressed Cameroonians since announcing his candidacy via social media in July. Instead, he has been targeting younger voters with daily posts on Facebook and X.

A week before the official start of campaigns, Biya left Cameroon for what his office described as “a brief private stay” in an undisclosed European location, while his peers headed to the UN General Assembly in New York.

He returned on Wednesday, October 1, as campaigns intensified, with those vying to succeed him holding rallies and promoting their manifestos.

Though Biya may not be physically present on the campaign trail, supporters of his ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) have been organising rallies — even in hard-to-reach areas of the conflict-plagued English-speaking regions.

At these rallies, delegated officials — mostly from Yaoundé, including government members dressed in fabrics bearing Biya’s smiling image — recount what they claim are the achievements of their regions under his regime and urge the population to vote for him again.

Biya himself is typically represented at these rallies by a large effigy, taken when the aging leader was still robust and sporting an afro. The effigy is placed in front of the high table and carried by young lieutenants during support parades.

Top government and party officials at such events often promise to relay messages to the President in Yaoundé.

At one such rally on Saturday, September 27, in Buea — the capital of the South West Region, one of two English-speaking regions that have been gripped by armed conflict for nearly a decade — Prime Minister Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, who is from the region, urged his people to vote for Biya to safeguard the privileges the region enjoys, including his own position as head of government.

Ngute dismissed claims that Biya’s age has affected his ability to govern, saying he acts as the President’s legs, going where Biya cannot.

“Those of you who are cocoa farmers, do you cut down a cocoa tree because it is old?” Dr Ngute asked, prompting chants of “No! No!”

He told CPDM supporters and sympathisers, “President Biya has made me his legs, so that where he cannot go, I would go.”

On the same day, in Bamenda in the English-speaking North West Region, former Prime Minister and immediate past President of the UN General Assembly, Philemon Yang, chaired a campaign rally.

He urged the population to vote for Biya, whom he described as an “experienced statesman” unfairly criticised by the opposition, who he said spend more time attacking the President than promoting their own agendas.

“We are not here to talk about age; we are here to talk about qualities, competencies, and abilities,” Yang said, dismissing concerns about Biya’s age and apparent inability to work.

“The opposition paints a picture of a world that doesn’t exist. They promise to take you to heaven, but they haven’t been there themselves. Most of the opposition leaders lack the experience that President Biya has.”

There are reports that Biya may hold at least three rallies before the campaign ends on Saturday, October 11, but neither his office nor the CPDM party has confirmed this.

The US-based former Kasapa FM host sparked controversy on social media on September 25, 2025 when she accused the politician of having a secret affair with Kumawood actress Joyce Boakye.

Afia Schwarzenegger claimed that Bempah was the biological father of her little daughter, Ohemaa and alleged that he had refused to honour his commitment as a man by catering for the child.

The controversial personality further alleged that the politician abandoned Boakye at the hospital after she delivered and that she had to intervene and borrow GH₵10,000 from the Akuapem North MP, Sammy Awuku, to settle her bills.

Owusu Bempah claps back at Afia Schwarzenegger

Following the damaging allegations, Joyce Boakye defended herself and her mystery child’s father from Afia Schwarzenegger’s allegations.

She said that he helped her and that their relationship was rosy until she refused to hand her child over to his sister to take care of per his request.

In a post seen by YEN.com.gh on Instagram on October 6, Ernest Owusu Bempah finally broke his silence and also addressed the allegations spouted by Afia Schwarzenegger.

In a short and ominous post, he sternly warned Afia Schwarzenegger that she would find herself in trouble if she continued her current actions against him.

He insinuated that he was planning his revenge and would take action in due time.

“Revenge and time? Two sweet friends lol,” he wrote.

Declare State Of Emergency On Galamsey – FIDA Ghana

0

President John Mahama

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas to safeguard the nation’s water bodies.

According to the group, galamsey may not be contagious as COVID-19 but its long-term effects on health, the environment, and livelihoods are equally destructive.

FIDA is the latest body to call on the President to declare a state of emergency on galamsey to avert the devasting effect of illegal mining in the country.

Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference as well as some civil society organisations (CSOs) have called on government to take decisive measures in the fight against illegal mining in recent months.

The President, during an encounter with the press on September 10, 2025, rebutted calls on him to declare a state of emergency, indicating that his government had not yet exhausted measures in tackling the menace.

Last week, he told CSOs that he will not hesitate to declare a state of emergency if the National Security Council advises him that the time had come to do so.

FIDA Ghana Disagrees

FIDA Ghana, in an open letter signed by its President, Gloria Ofori Boadu, added its voice to calls for the institution of state of emergency in mining areas to protect the environment and individuals, especially women, who it says bear the heaviest burden.

“Women who fetch water for households, farm food crops, process and trade in food and fish, or work and sell along the agricultural and gold value chains are directly endangered by the toxic chemicals used in small-scale mining,” the letter noted.

It said anecdotal evidence suggests similar adverse effect on fertility, women’s reproductive health and foetal and child cognitive development.

“Mercury and cyanide contamination threaten not only our health but also the very food security of the nation. Needless to say, we are all at risk,” it said.

FIDA Ghana is therefore, calling on President Mahama to uphold the constitutional and international right to water—recognised by the United Nations in 2010 and enshrined in Article 33(5) of the 1992 Constitution—by declaring a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas to safeguard our water bodies.

It is also calling for the immediate repeal of L.I. 2462 to permanently prohibit mining activities in forest reserves.

Again, the group wants the Ministry of Health and its agencies to urgently provide clear, nationwide guidance on how citizens can protect themselves from exposure to heavy metals in food and water.

It further called on the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to take decisive action to identify, warn against, ban, recall, and destroy local produce as well as bottled and sachet water found to be contaminated with heavy metals.

Finally, FIDA Ghana urged the Ministry of Agriculture, through its extension officers to conduct a comprehensive mapping of farming areas across Ghana, highlighting regions with elevated levels of heavy metals.

“This must include full disclosure of associated health risks and provide the public with reliable information on how to access safe food sources,” it added.

‘Petition against Godfred Dame is political’

Alfred Tuah-Yeboah was Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice under Dame Alfred Tuah-Yeboah was Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice under Dame

A former Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has expressed the view that the petition filed against Godfred Dame is politically motivated.

According to him, the matter would not have arisen if the complainant had not approached a Supreme Court judge to speak with the former AG.

Tuah-Yeboah made this known at the CID Headquarters on Monday, October 6, 2025, when about 70 lawyers gathered to rally support for Dame, the former Attorney General.

“Purely political and I think it’s also coming out of dislike for Godfred Dame. The complainant in this particular case knows deep down in his heart that this matter wouldn’t have arisen if he hadn’t gone to see one of his relatives, a Supreme Court judge, to speak to Godfred Dame,” he told the media.

He further insisted that Dame is innocent of all allegations leveled against him and expressed confidence that the truth will be revealed.

“He knows Dame is innocent but we are ready for him. Godfred is also ready for him and the people of Ghana will get to know the true facts behind this trumped up charges,” he added.

Watch as over 70 lawyers accompany Dame to CID head office over Jakpa petition

It will be recalled that Richard Jakpa petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to urgently investigate allegations that former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, attempted to fabricate evidence during the trial of Dr Ato Forson and two others.

Jakpa, who was the third accused person in the high-profile ambulance procurement case involving then-Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, stated that Godfred Dame misconducted himself when he allegedly solicited his co-operation to incriminate Ato Forson.

In a formal petition addressed to the Director of CID, Jakpa detailed that the then-AG wanted him to “testify in a manner to incriminate the first accused, Dr Ato Forson, and to help fast-track the conclusion of the case.”

He alleged that the testimony used to incriminate Dr Ato Forson after he opened his defence led to a phone call placed to him by Godfred Yeboah Dame on March 26, 2024.

He also indicated that this happened when he was to appear in the High Court to continue with his evidence-in-chief regarding the witness statement he had filed.

I never fabricated evidence – Dame rejects Jakpa’s CID complaint

0

Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has categorically denied allegations by businessman Richard Jakpa, now Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, the third accused, in the now discontinued ambulance case against former Majority Leader and now Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

Delivering a 50-point statement to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday, October 6, 2025, Mr. Dame described the claims as “baseless,” “sour grapes,” and “a desperate ploy to obstruct justice.”

He dismissed Jakpa’s accusations of fabrication of evidence in the case titled “Republic vrs. 1. Cassiel Ato Forson, 2. Dr. Sylvester Anemena, 3. Richard Jakpa.” He argued that “none of the ingredients of the offence have been made out in the charge against me.”

Denial of the fabrication allegation

According to the former Attorney-General, “I did not fabricate any evidence led in that criminal trial. I have not been shown any piece of evidence adduced in the matter, either by the prosecution or the defence, which is alleged to be fabricated by me.”

He maintained that he “never attempted to influence the testimony of Richard Jakpa, and indeed, he was not influenced at all when giving evidence in the case in question.”

Explaining the legal definition of the alleged offence, Mr. Dame stated that “the offence of fabrication of evidence entails causing a circumstance to exist, making a false entry in a book, record, account or forging a document adduced as evidence at the trial, with intent to mislead a judge, juror or public officer acting in a judicial capacity. No act of mine borders on the doing of anything that will constitute fabrication of evidence.”

He revealed that the so-called evidence relied upon by Jakpa was “a secret recording of a telephone conversation between himself and me on 26 March, 2024.”

However, Mr. Dame clarified that “that telephone conversation actually took place on 9 April, 2024, and not 26th March, 2024, as he alleges. I am unable to respond to an allegation based on an alleged conversation on 26 March 2024 since no conversation took place between us on that day.”

Context of the telephone call

Mr. Dame outlined that by the time of the said phone conversation, “the prosecution had long filed and made available to the defence, and even gone ahead to tender in evidence all the documents it sought to rely on.”

He emphasized that the documents had been filed as early as “14th February, 2022,” and that the High Court had already ruled that a prima facie case had been established against the accused persons on “30th March, 2023.”

By then, “the first accused, Dr. Ato Forson, had closed his case,” while the second accused’s case had been discontinued due to ill health. According to Dame, “the only accused person left was Richard Jakpa, who was in the process of testifying. He opened his defence by himself as he had fired his lawyer, Mr. Aubyn.”

The former Attorney-General insisted that he called Jakpa merely “to discuss the possibility of adjourning proceedings for that day since I had to finish up preparations for an international arbitration hearing in London.”

He further added, “I will produce evidence of this as well. In the course of the discussion, he revived his disagreement over the meaning of the contract in question and the implications of using Letters of Credit as payment for the ambulances, which were proven to be not fit for purpose.”

“No fabrication, just resentment”

Mr. Dame described Jakpa’s complaint as one born out of personal frustration. He said: “This complaint by Richard Jakpa is just sour grapes as he felt aggrieved by my refusal to yield to his representations, in those meetings with Justice Kulendi, for me to discontinue his prosecution.”

He added that Jakpa was “hugely disgruntled and resentful of me following my insistence on proceeding with this prosecution despite the pressure he and the other accused persons brought on me to halt their prosecution.”

He further alleged that the first accused person, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, had personally visited his residence in 2023 “to make representations and impress upon me to stop his prosecution. This, I refused to oblige.”

Role of Justice Kulendi

Mr. Dame confirmed that all his encounters with Jakpa occurred either in open court or at the home of Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi, whom he described as “a respected senior colleague for many years even before he was appointed to the Supreme Court.”

He said, “The fact remains that there would have been no ‘Dame–Jakpa’ without Justice Kulendi.” He emphasized that his visits to the judge’s residence were out of respect, stating:

“It is inconceivable for a lawyer, more so the Attorney-General, to refuse invitations by a Justice of the Supreme Court to visit or to decline to give him audience when requested.”

However, he maintained that he “did not reasonably think that honouring invitations to his residence would entail any danger or prejudice” and that he “maintained independence of thought on all issues discussed in Justice Kulendi’s house, including matters related to Richard Jakpa’s prosecution.”

High Court ruling on the matter

Mr. Dame stressed that Jakpa’s allegations were not only false but had already been “judicially considered and pronounced upon by the High Court, Accra.”

Citing pages 24, 31, and 32 of the High Court ruling delivered on June 6, 2024, by Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, he quoted:

“After listening to the conversation between A3 and A1, the issue of whether the Attorney-General actually told A3 to implicate A1 is not borne out by the evidence.

“The declaration that A3 was innocent and going through ordeal … was not made by the Attorney-General, but was made by A3, to which the Attorney-General responded at minute 10:20, ‘I am not asking you to help me.”

He added that the court further concluded, “After listening to the recording … there is no actual evidence that the Attorney-General as the prosecutor has behaved in such an egregious manner that the 1st Accused/Applicant’s right to a fair trial is in jeopardy.”

Mr. Dame argued that the CID lacked the jurisdiction to reinvestigate matters already determined by a court of competent jurisdiction, emphasizing: “The instant complaint seeks to relitigate issues already adjudicated upon by the High Court, Accra, in respect of which there is no appeal. The matters in issue have become res judicata.”

Timeline of contact with Jakpa

Detailing his limited engagement with the businessman, the former Attorney-General stated:

“I have never met Mr. Richard Jakpa anywhere apart from inside the courtroom and the residence of a Justice of the Supreme Court, His Lordship Justice Yonny Kulendi.”

He explained that the first interaction occurred when Justice Kulendi visited his office on 18 January 2022, after Jakpa’s arraignment, to plead for the accused’s temporary release pending bail verification. He agreed out of respect for the judge.

He noted that Jakpa later obtained his number from Justice Kulendi and sent him 68 WhatsApp messages, to which he replied only twice, a fact Jakpa admitted in court.

Mr. Dame further stated: “In light of the above, I say that the allegation of fabrication of evidence is totally baseless and springs only from the fertile imagination of Richard Jakpa.”

He maintained that his only motive in calling Jakpa on 9 April 2024 was procedural, connected to an adjournment request before he left for an arbitration hearing in London, one which Ghana ultimately won.

Chairman Wontumi granted GH₵1m bail with 2 sureties, to appear in court tomorrow

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He was granted bail in the sum of GH₵1 million with two sureties, which he has successfully met. The development follows a directive issued by the Attorney General (AG), Dr Dominic Ayine, ordering him to report to the CID headquarters in Accra on Monday, 6 October 2025, or face arrest.

Chairman Wontumi is expected to face three mining-related charges at the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, 7 October 2025. His case stems from ongoing investigations involving his company, Akonta Mining Limited, and allegations of illegal mining activities.

Speaking to journalists at the CID headquarters, his lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that his client was cooperating fully with investigators but warned against any attempt to revoke his existing police enquiry bail.

Indeed, we don’t need to unnecessarily increase the political temperature in the country. We have not at any point in time decided or refused to respond to invitations.

Chairman Wontumi’s legal challenges began earlier this year following allegations made by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. During a press conference on Tuesday, 21 April, the Minister accused Akonta Mining Limited of unlawfully selling mining concessions within the Aboi Forest to unauthorised miners.

Some of these concessions were reportedly sold for up to GH₵300,000, while others were allegedly exchanged for gold royalties. Following the allegations, the Minister ordered the immediate revocation of all mining licences held by Akonta Mining.

Chairman Wontumi is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to respond to the charges formally.

Issue licences only to miners with geological data

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged the Minerals Commission not to issue licences to small-scale miners who lack geological data on the mineralised status of the areas they intend to operate.

He warned that the absence of such data often leads to haphazard mining practices, which undermine environmental sustainability.

Dr. Ashigbey made the call at the opening of a six-day German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Alumni Seminar in Takoradi, held on the theme: “Responsible Artisanal and Industrial Miners in Africa.”

“Minerals Commission should not process any licence where the mineralisation of an area is not sufficient to support profitable mining activity,” he stated.

He further suggested that Ghana adopt best practices from other jurisdictions by tasking the Geological Survey Authority to conduct mineral exploration and make the data available to small-scale miners, at a fee, to support more responsible and environmentally sound mining.

Sudan militia leader convicted of war crimes during Darfur war

0

Ali Kushayb was one of the leaders of Janjaweed, a gov't-backed group that terrorised Darfur Ali Kushayb was one of the leaders of Janjaweed, a gov’t-backed group that terrorised Darfur

A Sudanese militia leader has been found guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Darfur region more than 20 years ago.

Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, was one of the leaders of the Janjaweed, a government-backed group that terrorised Darfur, killing hundreds of thousands of people.

Kushayb is the first person to be tried by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the atrocities in Darfur. He had argued it was a case of mistaken identity.

The conflict lasted from 2003 to 2020 and was one of the world’s gravest humanitarian disasters, with allegations of ethnic cleansing and genocide against the region’s non-Arabic population.

Five years after the end of that crisis, Darfur is a key battleground in another civil war, this time between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), whose origins lie in the Janjaweed.

During Kushayb’s trial, survivors described how their villages were burned down, men and boys slaughtered and women forced into sex slavery.

The militia leader was found guilty on 27 counts, centring on attacks committed between 2003 and 2004.

Judges at the ICC found the Janjaweed’s brutal tactics – including mass executions, sexual violence and torture – were often inflicted by Kushayb and his men.

Ahead of the verdict, a small group of Darfuris waited patiently to enter the court, in the Dutch city of The Hague.

They were in no doubt about the pivotal role Kushayb played in their suffering, with one man saying: “He was the one who gave the orders. He was the one who got the weapons.

“So if you ask me if he was important in Darfur, I will you tell you he was one of the most important ones.”

“So if you ask me if he was important in Darfur, I will you tell you he was one of the most important ones.”

The Darfur war began after the Arab-dominated government at the time armed the Janjaweed, in an attempt to suppress an uprising by rebels from black African ethnic groups.

The Janjaweed systematically attacked non-Arab villagers accused of supporting the rebels, leading to accusations of genocide.

That same systematic violence is still happening in Darfur as part of Sudan’s current civil war.

Many of the Janjaweed fighters have morphed into the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the paramilitary group that is battling Sudan’s army.

The UK, US and rights groups have accused the RSF of carrying out ethnic cleansing against non-Arab communities in Darfur since the conflict began in 2023.

Throughout the two conflicts, there has been a “long hiring out of militias, suppressing of rebellion, and sexual violence used as a tool of war”, Dr Matthew Benson-Strohmayer, Sudan Research Director at the London School of Economics, told the BBC.

Mr Benson-Strohmayer hopes the ICC verdict will impact the current conflict, but “sincerely” doubts it will.

“I think the way that the war is being fought in Darfur in particular is really a war of terror,” he told the BBC.

“It’s a very masculine war – sexual violence against women, or of starvation literally being used in order to barricade populations in and starve them to death.”

Kushayb will be sentenced at a later date.

In an interview with ZionFelix, Grace Ashley poured her heart out about how she felt heartbroken despite her dedication towards promoting the Black Stars.

The singer was a strong cheerleader for the Black Stars. Songs she composed for the team became anthems that helped Ghanaians celebrate the team for years.

According to the Wo Nutso Yesu hitmaker, Stephen Appiah is one of the several people in Black Stars who made her give up on her efforts to promote the team.

The singer said she was disappointed when the ex-Black Stars skipper commented on an appeal for the national soccer team to look after her.

At the time, the singer was not being compensated by the state for her contribution to the Black Stars through her songs.

She recalled that Stephen Appiah, after getting to know her ordeal, dished out a hostile reply which broke her spirit.

“He said if I were working for the state. So if I wasn’t getting paid, then I needed to stop,” Grace Ashley said in her interview.

“I was very sad. Since then, I have not really composed a song for the Black Stars,” She added.

Speaking with ZionFelix, Grace Ashley established that her career in music has been marred by a lot of rejection and disappointment.

Adekunle Gold releases ‘Fuji’ as highly anticipated sixth studio album

Global Afropop trailblazer Adekunle Gold has released his long-awaited sixth studio album, FUJI, available now worldwide on all digital platforms.

Alongside the album, he shares Believeas the project’s focus track—an undeniable pop-Fuji anthem that captures the spirit of desire and devotion at the heart of the record.

Fans can also pre-order a special limited-edition vinyl of FUJI on October 6th, 2024. Watch the album trailer

The album’s rollout included a run of acclaimed singles, each with visuals: Obimo, Coco Money, Bobo and Believe (focus track).

“Believe” is the most pop-forward record on FUJI – a sleek, melody-driven track that flips a standout sample into an arms-raised chorus designed for global stages.

Stripped of heavy Yoruba percussion but rich in harmonies and emotive vocal layers, the song embodies Adekunle Gold’s vision: pop music reimagined through a Fuji lens.

The track serves as a gateway into the album’s narrative of hustle, rebirth, and expression.

In his sixth and latest album FUJI, Adekunle Gold holds a mirror to his emotions in a way he has never done before. While previous projects explored desire, fame, and self-defined success, here Gold is pensive, honest, and precise, weighing the clashing emotions of triumph, grief, and reinvention.

Across its tracks, FUJI oscillates between celebratory moments suffused with confidence and intimate reflections that reckon with loss—most notably the passing of his father—and the journey of rediscovering himself. It is a beautiful and ambitious sonic feast, weaving together soul, R&B, Afropop, Apala, and Fuji.

At its core, FUJI is about openness. Rooted in a genre that historically thrived on unfiltered truth, Adekunle Gold lays his desires, fears, philosophies, and reflections bare, embodying the ethos of Fuji music while reimagining its form for today.

Equally significant is Gold’s reconnection to his Yoruba heritage and royal lineage, which reframed his relationship with his identity and artistry.

As with each stage of his career—from the storytelling of About 30 to the invention of Afro Pop Vol. 1 and the cultural reimaginings of Catch Me If You Can and Tequila Ever AfterFUJI represents a man reborn. It is the sound of Adekunle Gold sitting inside his feelings, reconciling with the past, and emerging with a clearer vision for his artistry and legacy.
