Mediation experts needed to solve conflicts – Elikem Kotoko

0

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, has called for the involvement of professional mediation experts to help address the root causes of protracted conflicts, warning that continued violence poses a serious setback to national development.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, December 22, he emphasised the importance of sustained peace education, particularly among young people, to discourage participation in violent conflicts and promote long-term stability.

He noted that conflicts in affected areas have far-reaching consequences for local communities, impacting the entire country through strained budgetary allocations and disruptions to essential public services.

According to him, areas plagued by persistent unrest often become unattractive to national service personnel, healthcare professionals, and job seekers, limiting access to critical services and slowing development. He argued that no country can develop under such conditions, describing conflict as a major obstacle to equitable growth and national cohesion.

While commending the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his consistent readiness to mediate in conflict situations, the Deputy CEO of the Forestry Commission said that traditional mediation efforts must now be complemented with expert-led processes.

“We need to preach to our young people on the need to give peace a lasting chance, and also address those who take delight in these kinds of conflicts. We must recognise that the entire country suffers when such things happen.”

Director General of the National Lottery Authority, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has participated in the 2025 end-of-year review meeting of the African Lotteries Association (ALA), held in Accra on December 18.

Abdul-Salam, doubles as the Vice President of the ALA, an association of national lottery bodies across Africa that promotes best practices and collaboration within the industry.

The Association, as a governing bodies of lottery across the continent, enhances the need for a common platform for sharing best practices and governance protocols on lottery operations.

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, the NLA boss said, the event was an assembly of the board of the ALA, to review and take stock of 2025 happenings and to consider operational activities for the New Year, 2026.

Mr Abdul-Salam noted that the meeting afforded ALA officials the opportunity to discuss the calendar event for next year, with far-reaching decisions taken.

He said one of the successes chalked this year, was the training of member countries in cybersecurity and block chain administration of lotteries, which was done in Ivory Coast and Morocco respectively.

“In 2026, the ALA will conduct further trainings in other areas in lotto governance and operations, with seminars and executive meetings to discuss industry matters such as artificial intelligence, and responsible gaming” the DG noted.

Concerning operational activities of the NLA, Mr Abdul-Salam explained that the Authority has set out to implement several reforms in 2026, concerning lottery governance and the introduction of new products for the gaming public.

Products of the NLA, including the flagship ‘5/90’, according to the DG, is a shining example of a sustainable lottery product, which remains a trump card, with other African countries keenly taking inspirations.

The ALA, an association of 16-member countries is headed by the President of LONACI (Loterie Nationale de Cote d’Ivoire), as its Director-General.

The NLA’s strong relationship with the ALA as a prominent member and key contributor in decision-making concerning lottery governance, highlights the Authority’s leadership role in Africa’s lottery sector.

A Response to Martin Amidu

0

Former Attorney-General Martin Amidu’s constitutional questions on the Asantehene’s mediation in Bawku demand a rigorous response. While his vigilance is commendable, his conclusions are not supported by Ghana’s 1992 Constitution or its dispute-resolution framework. This mediation is a legitimate, complementary peace-building effort within our constitutional ecosystem.

Why The Lithium Deal Must Be Renegotiated For A Fair, Future‑proof National Interest

0

Ghana stands on the brink of a new mineral era. Lithium — the “white gold” powering electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and the global green transition — is now one of the world’s most strategic resources. Countries that negotiate wisely will secure decades of prosperity. Those that negotiate poorly will watch their wealth exported in raw form while their citizens remain poor.

Recent analyses of Ghana’s Ewoyaa lithium agreement reveal a troubling reality. Independent policy think tanks argue that the fiscal and structural terms fall short of emerging global standards. While some government-aligned voices describe the deal as “forward‑thinking,” the broader international context tells a different story.

The truth is simple: Ghana can do better. And Ghana must do better.

HOW GHANA’S LITHIUM DEAL COMPARES GLOBALLY

1. The World Is Tightening Control Over Lithium

  • Countries now treat lithium as a strategic mineral, not a regular commodity.
  • Governments are raising royalties, increasing state equity, and enforcing local processing.
  • The global goal is to capture value at home, not export raw wealth.

2. Ghana’s Current Position

  • Ghana’s Ewoyaa agreement uses a fixed 5% royalty, which experts say is outdated for a volatile mineral like lithium.
  • Analysts argue the deal lacks strong value‑addition requirements and robust state participation.
  • Calls for a sliding‑scale royalty reflect a growing consensus that Ghana must modernize its fiscal terms.

3. How African Peers Are Moving Ahead

  • Zimbabwe bans raw lithium exports and forces companies to process locally.
  • Namibia restricts unprocessed lithium exports and embeds domestic processing in its national strategy.
  • DRC charges higher royalties for strategic minerals and maintains strong state equity participation.

4. Global Benchmarks Beyond Africa

  • Chile leads the world with high government take, strict oversight, and mandatory value addition.
  • Australia uses moderate royalties but compensates with strong institutions and regulatory stability.

5. What This Means for Ghana
Ghana’s deal is less ambitious than the assertive models of Zimbabwe, Namibia, DRC, or Chile.

Ghana lags in:

  • Local processing
  • State equity
  • Strategic control
  • Future‑proof royalty structures
  • Without reform, Ghana risks repeating the raw‑export trap seen in gold and bauxite.

6. The Bottom Line

  • Countries that understand lithium’s strategic value are negotiating tougher, smarter, future‑oriented deals.
  • Ghana’s current framework is not yet aligned with these global standards.
  • Renegotiation is not optional — it is urgent and necessary.

THE CORE PROBLEM
Ghana is negotiating lithium as if it were gold in the 1990s — fixed royalties, limited state control, and weak value‑addition requirements. But lithium is not gold. It is a 21st‑century strategic mineral at the heart of a global technological race.

If Ghana does not renegotiate now, future generations will pay the price.

POLICY BRIEF: WHAT GHANA MUST DO NOW
1. Renegotiate the Royalty Structure
Adopt a sliding‑scale royalty tied to global lithium prices.

2. Increase State Equity
Move toward at least 30% state participation, whether through equity, carried interest, or a sovereign minerals fund.

3. Mandate Local Processing
No raw lithium should leave Ghana. Processing must occur in‑country — even if phased.

4. Create a Lithium Sovereign Wealth Fund

Ring‑fence revenues for youth employment, renewable energy, industrialization, and regional development.

5. Ensure Transparency and Public Oversight

Publish all contracts, fiscal terms, and environmental impact assessments.

6. Strengthen Environmental and Community Protections

Lithium mining is water‑intensive. Ghana must enforce water protection, land reclamation, and community benefit agreements.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO H.E. JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA

(Framed as civic advocacy, not personal political opinion)

1. Commission an Independent Review Panel

Include IMANI, CSOs, mining economists, and international mineral policy experts.

2. Suspend Implementation Until Renegotiation Is Complete

This aligns with calls from independent analysts who argue the deal is structurally weak.

3. Lead a Continental Lithium Strategy

Position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s critical‑minerals diplomacy.

4. Champion Local Processing and Battery Manufacturing

Use Ghana’s industrial base to attract battery producers and EV component manufacturers.

5. Launch a National Public Education Campaign

Citizens must understand what lithium is, why it matters, and what Ghana stands to gain or lose.

6. Protect Ghana from the “Resource Curse 2.0”

Ensure lithium becomes a blessing, not another missed opportunity.

CALL TO ACTION FOR CITIZENS
Ghana’s future is being negotiated today.

Lithium is not just a mineral — it is a national destiny.

Citizens must demand:

  • Transparency
  • Fairness
  • Local value addition
  • Environmental protection
  • A deal that matches global standards

A nation that exports raw lithium will remain poor.

A nation that processes lithium will rise.

Banking profession sees shift as women dominate new CIB cohort

0

Leadership, Management and Council Members of CIB in a group photo with Inductees after the event Leadership, Management and Council Members of CIB in a group photo with Inductees after the event

Women now form the majority of newly qualified chartered bankers in Ghana, as the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB Ghana) inducted and graduated 186 professionals at its 17th Induction and Graduation Ceremony in Accra. Of the 186 inductees and graduates, 55 percent were women, extending a trend that has gathered pace in recent years.

In the previous two years, women accounted for 51 percent and then 60 percent of new chartered bankers, a shift that Institute leaders described as a sign of growing sustainability and inclusion in the country’s financial talent pipeline.

The latest cohort brings the total number of chartered bankers produced by CIB Ghana over the past six years to 1,313, a figure the Institute said reflects sustained investment in professional standards, ethics and leadership within the financial sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, the chief executive of CIB Ghana, Robert Dzato, said the growing female participation was not incidental but the outcome of deliberate policies aimed at widening access to professional banking education while maintaining rigorous standards. “We are building a profession that reflects society and is fit for the future. The numbers show that women are not only participating but excelling, and that is essential for the long-term health of the financial sector,” he said.

The event, held under the theme ‘Building Future-Ready Banks: Ethical Leadership, Sustainable Finance and Currency Stability amid Disruption’, brought together regulators, industry leaders, bankers and families to mark what was repeatedly described as both an end and a beginning; the completion of a demanding programme of study and the assumption of new professional responsibilities.

Beyond gender balance, the 2025 cohort also illustrated the Institute’s emphasis on inclusiveness across age and career stage. The youngest graduate was 23 years old, having enrolled through the Institute’s Best and Bright Programme, which targets high-performing university students and offers conditional exemptions to accelerate their professional journey. The oldest inductee was 59, demonstrating the Institute’s message that professional development in banking is not limited by age.

“These stories matter. They show that you can start early or return later, but what matters is commitment to learning, ethics and professionalism,” Mr. Dzato added.

The President of CIB Ghana, Benjamin Amenumey, told inductees and graduates that their qualification went beyond technical competence.

In a speech read on his behalf by CIB Ghana’s Vice President, Samuel Asiama, he described the chartered banker designation as a public trust, rooted in the Institute’s statutory mandate under Act 991 to promote the study of banking and regulate professional practice in Ghana. “Today’s achievement is not just a credential,” he said. “It is a call to uphold honesty and integrity in your institutions and in your dealings with customers and society,” he further stated.

The CIB representatives linked the growing number of chartered bankers, particularly women, to broader national priorities, including financial stability, governance and sustainable economic growth. They argued that a deeper pool of ethically trained professionals was essential in a sector whose decisions directly affect households, businesses and public confidence.

Thomas Atta John, managing director of Guaranty Trust Bank Ghana and keynote speaker, said the increasing participation of women and younger professionals should be matched by an equally strong commitment to ethics and continuous learning. “Banking decisions shape lives in ways that are not always visible. That is why professionalism, integrity and relevance are non-negotiable,” he said.

Among the inductees was Eyram Amenyo Klutse, a relationship manager with First National Bank, who emerged as the overall best inductee. Speaking after the ceremony, she described the programme as demanding but transformative, offering exposure to the full breadth of banking beyond individual roles or departments. “It has not been easy combining work, study and family. But it gives you a broader understanding of the industry and reinforces the importance of ethics and professionalism,” she said.

For Rosemary Quansah, the youngest graduate, the ceremony marked the culmination of persistence after early setbacks. She urged students and young professionals to begin their professional qualifications early, warning that delaying often made the process more difficult later in life.

ghana news American entrepreneur assists Frankadua community

3 minutes read

A fifty-year-old  American businessman in Ghana, Jonathan Reynolds and his spouse, Shonda Reynolds, in collaboration with the NINE23 Foundation in the United States of America, have assisted the Frankadua Community in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region with two boreholes, laptops, computers and a six-seater washroom facility.

The laptops and computers donated to the three junior high schools in the Frankadua Morgadzi Electoral area would assist teachers in teaching computing more effectively and help students learn the practical lessons of computing.

The two big boreholes dug for the community will also end an acute water challenge the community has been facing. In the same way, the six-seater washrooms would go a long way to stop open defecation.

Handing over

At the handing over of the projects to the community at Frankadua last Wednesday, the community used the occasion to install Jonathan Reynolds as the Development Chief of the town with the stool name Torgbi Kofi Dunenyo I.

The Regent of the town, Asempa Adrakpanya, who swore him in, was very grateful to the Torgbi Kofi Dunenyo I for his kind gesture, which has relieved the community of the water shortage they were facing and the open defecation that had persisted for many years.

‘’The whole Frankadua community is very grateful to you and your collaborators, especially Team CSR, who facilitated all the activities for the facilities you have provided. It used to be a mess in our cemetery due to open defecation. We are therefore grateful that it has come to an end as we began using the washrooms. We are indeed very grateful’’, the regent stated.

The benefactor

The Development Chief, Torgbi Kofi Dunenyo I, for his part, said it was not good for those of them from the diaspora to come and do business in Africa, for that matter, Ghana, without investing in the communities.

‘’I got to know of the plight of the community through the leadership of Team CSR and therefore it touched me to give back to the community, hence these projects.

I want to be emphatic and say that open defecation in this community should be a thing of the past’’, he advised.

According to him, the facilities provided would not be the end but the beginning of more to come as he was going to collaborate with his family and friends in the United States to do more for the Frankadua community, stressing ‘’the most important thing is for you to maintain them and more would be added’’.

The Chairman of Team CSR, Jonathan Akuamoah, and the collaborators of NINE23 Foundation, who provided the background on the provision of the facilities, said that his NGO, Team CSR, had supported many communities in the Asuogyaman District, including Apeguso, Mpankadan, among others.

He said that during his visit to the Frankadua community early this year, he saw many people bathing outside, which exposed their private parts. He called for his collaboration with the benefactors to take Frankadua out of such an unhealthy situation.

He advised the Frankadua community to exercise patience, maintain all the facilities they had been given, as more would be added, saying ‘’sustainability by the community is key.

An opinion leader of the community, Cephas Ayisah, on behalf of the community, thanked the benefactors for their gesture and pledged that the community’s leadership would ensure the facilities were maintained.

The Frankadua community, which is predominantly Ewes, entertained the benefactors with Ewe cultural drumming and dance, to the guests’ admiration.

Hands-on skills must be central in technical universities

0

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has challenged technical universities across the country to place employable skills and hands-on practical entrepreneurship at the centre of their academic delivery to better prepare graduates for the job market.

According to him, as the government commits additional resources to resetting Ghana’s education system, institutions of higher learning are expected to work closely with industry to develop transformational curricula that will strengthen the economy and improve standards of living.

The Minister made the call in a speech read on his behalf at the 22nd Congregation of the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in Koforidua over the weekend.

Reading the address, the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Smile Dzisi, explained that the government’s reset agenda is focused on making education not only accessible and inclusive, but also more meaningful and impactful.

According to him, the agenda places strong emphasis on the development of employable skills, the promotion of innovative enterprises, and the advancement of excellence in human capital both locally and internationally.

“It is expected that our institutions of higher learning will collaborate with industry in leading the conversation on transformational curricula needed to leapfrog the country into a stronger economy and a better standard of living.

“I challenge Koforidua Technical University, and by extension all technical universities, to place employable skills and hands-on practical entrepreneurship at the core of their education delivery,” the Minister stated.

The ceremony, held under the theme “Technical Education for Innovation, Employability and Global Competitiveness,” saw a total of 3,011 students graduate in various programmes.

Addressing the graduands, the Vice-Chancellor of Koforidua Technical University, Professor John Owusu, urged them to apply the practical knowledge and skills acquired to solving real-life problems in their communities.

“The challenges of the world are waiting for your solutions,” he told the graduates. “Your wealth, success, reputation and fame are hidden in the challenges around you, and it is by providing solutions that you unlock them.”

Political interference worsening Bawku crisis

0

Ibrahim Adjei, a former Secretary at the Office of ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo, has called on politicians to completely distance themselves from the protracted Bawku conflict, warning that political interference is undermining efforts to achieve lasting peace.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, December 22, he disclosed that political alignment and partisan interests have only deepened tensions in the conflict-prone area, making resolution increasingly difficult.

According to him, politicians must adopt a dispassionate posture and resist the temptation to take sides, stressing that peacebuilding efforts stand a better chance when political actors allow affected communities to engage sincerely with neutral mediators.

“If a politician enters the space pushing a political agenda, it does not help the people of Bawku,” he said, adding that citizens, not politicians, are best placed to express vested interests in the conflict while leaders act strictly as honest brokers.

Ibrahim Adjei argued that once politicians decouple themselves from the conflict and relinquish political interests, the conditions would be created for credible mediation and the emergence of what he described as “green shoots of lasting peace” in the enclave.

His comments come amid renewed violence in parts of the North East Region, heightening concerns over security and enforcement of emergency measures.

Four additional houses were reportedly set ablaze in Nalerigu on Saturday night, despite the area being under curfew, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of security deployment and response during restricted hours.

In response to the latest disturbances, authorities have announced additional restrictions in Nalerigu, including a ban on riding motorbikes and wearing smocks, as part of intensified efforts to contain the violence and restore calm.

Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank records remarkable growth in all indicators

0

Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank Plc at Wiamoase in the Sekyere South District of Ashanti Region has recorded a remarkable growth in all financial indicators in the 2024 year under review.

The Bank posted a pre-tax profit of a little over GH¢ 15.4 million in the 2024 period under review as against approximately GH¢ 8.5 million in the previous year, representing a remarkable growth of 81.61%.

The significant rise in profit is attributed to improved revenues generated from operations and prudent management of recurrent expenditure both on the part of the Board, Management and the entire Staff.

By this, the Board of Directors has congratulated management and staff for the remarkable about GH¢7million profit growth which translates in absolute terms and have therefore been urged to work assiduously towards increasing the Bank’s profitability to increase shareholders’ investments. Directors of the bank have also been commended for their strategic direction and decisiveness in achieving this remarkable success.

Dividend Payment

The Board of Directors has proposed the payment of a dividend-per-share of GH¢0.0123p which gives a return of 61.5% on the Bank’s current share price of GH¢ 0.002p which the regulator has given its exceptional approval to pay the proposed dividend to shareholders.

It is the hope of the Board of Directors that the Bank’s performance will continue to improve and move towards such a positive direction to enable the continuous payment of dividends in the years ahead.

Stated Capital and Shareholders Funds

In the 2024 year under review, the Bank’s Stated Capital grew by 27.07% from GH¢2,015.259 million in 2023 to a little over GH¢2,560,762 million in 2024. Shareholders’ Funds also increased by 89.81% in 2024 from about GH¢11.4 million in 2023 to approximately GH¢21.6 million. The increase resulted from unprecedented profit achieved and rigorous sales of ordinary shares.

The Bank in spite of the growth in share capital is strategizing to sign up new shareholders, and also have existing shareholders invest more into the Stated Capital of the Bank. This will enable the growth of the Bank to be accelerated and ensure that the Bank is able to expand its operations and enhance its profitability to the benefit of cherished shareholders.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr Emmanuel Obeng announced these and more at the Bank’s 38th Annual General Meeting of shareholders held last Friday at the church auditorium of Salvation Army Church at Wiamoase in Ashanti.

Operational Environment

According to him, the financial data released by the Bank of Ghana fairly reflect aggregate figures collated from the Universal banks; rural and community banks; microfinance institutions; other special deposit taking institutions under the supervision of BoG; and those supervised by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) during the period under review.

Despite global challenges, the Ghanaian economy demonstrated impressive resilience, exceeding expectations with a growth rate of 5.7% driven by strong performance in the first half of the year. The policy rate increased from 25.5% in 2023 to 27% in 2024. This increased the cost of borrowing in 2024. The inflation rate eased slightly from 24.2% in 2023 to 23.80% at the end of 2024.

The interest on 91-day Government Treasury bills declined from 29.49% to 27.73% in 2024 while the 182-day declined from 31.70% in 2023 to 28.43% in 2024. The 364-day also declined from 32.97% in 2023 to 29.95% in 2024.

The banking sector saw some significant gains. As of December 2024, Ghana’s banking sector exhibited robust growth and resilience, marked by significant increases in total assets and improved profitability. The banking sector total assets expanded by 33.8% reaching GHS367.8 billion by the end of December 2024 up from GH¢274.9 billion in December 2023. This growth was driven by sustained deposit mobilization.

The Return on equity for the banking industry declined from 34.25% in 2023 to 33.04% in 2024. The Capital Adequacy ratio (CAR) for the banking industry stood at 14% in 2024 up from 13.9% in 2023. The credit risk for the industry increased from 20.6% in 2023 to 21.8% in 2024 indicating increasing

In spite of the challenging macroeconomic environment coupled with the high inflationary rate that pertained during the reviewed year, the bank managed to pull yet another impressive operational performance in all key financial indicators supported by enhanced deposit mobilization strategies, prudent cost management and stronger credit risk controls. Revenue streams improved across key business line compared to 2023 as indicated in the table.

Corporate Social Responsibility

The Bank continues to provide support to various state institutions and stakeholders within its catchment areas. Some projects supported within the bank’s catchment areas during the year under review included that of the Local Government, Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Police Service, some government health facilities and support for Farmers’ Day Celebration. For the year 2024, a total of GH¢183,877 was spent on CSR programmes for local communities.

The Board Chairman stressed that the bank is socially responsible and would continue to support projects and engage in environmentally friendly activities in the years ahead. These contributions reflect the Bank’s dedication to community development and its role as a responsible corporate entity.

Commendation / Advice

The Kumasi Manager of ARB Apex Bank, Leonard Maasang who delivered an address on behalf of the Managing Director, Alex Kwasi Awuah, congratulated the shareholders, Board, and Management of the Bank for the impressive performance of the Bank.

He commended the Board of Directors for providing strategic leadership, and Management for their operational efficiency and integrity. He added that the Bank’s 2024 results clearly indicate that Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank is becoming a model of growth through prudence and innovation.

The MD of ARB Apex Bank advised Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank to deepen its adoption of digital tools; including agency banking, mobile banking platforms, and the GhanaPay solutions, to enhance service delivery, expand outreach, and reduce operational costs.

He mentioned that digital transformation is not merely about technology; it is about building convenience and trust. He stressed that ARB Apex Bank continues to invest in shared digital infrastructure for RCBs and urged Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank to leverage these platforms to reach more customers, especially the youth and informal sector workers who increasingly prefer mobile-based services.

He further advised that to elevate profitability and sustainability Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank must first bolster loan portfolio growth and asset quality management.

With loans remaining flat amid rising deposits, channeling liquidity into high-quality, productive lending, especially to agriculture, MSMEs, and underserved segments, while tightening credit monitoring to curb impairments (which rose to GH¢2.93 million) will optimize returns as economic conditions improve.

Outlook

The Chief Executive Officer of the Bank, Paul Kwabena Oduro, in an interview with the Business & Financial Times, said the Bank would continue its good services and develop need-based products for its customers.

He has also affirmed that Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank continues to stand as a pillar of financial resilience and community empowerment. According to him, the Bank’s performance over the past year reflects not only prudent management and operational efficiency, but also the unwavering trust in customers and stakeholders placed in them.

According to him, the 38th Annual General Meeting marks yet another milestone in the Bank’s journey of resilience and innovation.

“Our operational and financial performance this year reflects the dedication of our staff, the trust of our customers, and the unwavering support of our shareholders. We have strengthened our balance sheet, expanded our customer base, and delivered value across our communities. This success is not an end in itself, but a foundation upon which we will build even greater achievements’, he stressed.

Looking ahead, Mr Oduro said management’s priority is to deepen digital transformation and broaden financial inclusion as well as investing in technology that enhances efficiency, reduces transaction costs, and improves customer experience.

He stressed that the credit department of the Bank would continue to design products tailored to the needs of farmers, traders, SMEs, and households, ensuring that the Bank’s growth is inclusive and sustainable.

“By leveraging partnerships and strengthening our risk management framework, we will safeguard profitability while expanding our reach,” he said

“We are committed to positioning Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank as a leader in community‑focused banking. Our strategy emphasises innovation, customer loyalty, and prudent financial stewardship. With the continued support of our stakeholders, we will not only consolidate our gains but also unlock new opportunities for growth. Together, we will ensure that the Bank remains a trusted partner in driving prosperity for individuals, businesses, and the wider economy.

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, Dec. 22, GNA – The University of Ghana (UG) has commissioned its Innovation Enclave, a facility designed to bridge academic research with youth entrepreneurship.

The commissioning, held at the former RID Annex, marked a milestone in the university’s vision to become a hub for creativity and technological advancement.

The project was realised through a partnership between UG, the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC), and Imperial College London.

Mr Benjamin Gyan‑Kesse, Executive Director of KIC, challenged the university community to rethink traditional academic structures to accommodate student entrepreneurs.

He said many students were forced to choose between education and their growing businesses.

Mr Gyan‑Kesse noted that data from KIC‑supported startups showed student‑led ventures created an average of eight to ten jobs each, contributing to tackling unemployment.

“Can the university start thinking around how we create special vehicle processes for young entrepreneurs?

“Let us find a way to support brilliant entrepreneurs and push them so they can really do this for Ghana. These are the guys who are going to make our universities great,” he said.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice‑Chancellor of UG, emphasised the importance of sustained partnership, noting that the eight‑year collaboration with KIC, dating back to 2016, was built on trust and shared vision.

She expressed pride in the achievements of UG students in diverse fields and assured stakeholders that the university was ready to evolve to support its “champions.”

“We have heard your plea and the challenge you have thrown at us to be creative and accommodate such students, so they don’t drop out,” she stated.

Prof. Amfo said the Pro‑Vice‑Chancellors for Academic and Student Affairs would explore modular programmes to help students balance academic knowledge with entrepreneurial experience.

She also acknowledged the contributions of the KGL Foundation, Nubuke Foundation, and Impact Hub Accra.

The facility was dedicated as a centre of excellence for innovation serving humanity and driving national development.

It is supported by international and local partners, including Imperial College London, whose expertise in innovation ecosystems has been instrumental.

The event was attended by senior university officials, including Pro‑Vice‑Chancellor Prof Felix Ankomah Asante, representatives from the French Embassy, and industry partners.

Hotels, guesthouses record high occupancy ahead of Christmas

0

Hotels and guest houses are recording higher occupancy levels as inbound travel picks up ahead of the Christmas festivities.

This trend of seasonal upswing is making tourism one of the strong drivers of service-sector growth.

Per the Statistical Service’s 2023 Inbound Overnight Visitors Report, Ghana welcomed more than 800,000 overnight visitors who accounted for about 99 percent of all international arrivals between October 2022 and September 2023.

With just days to Christmas, the boom is once again continuing this year, as those from the diaspora return home for the holidays.

This has resulted in increased bookings for hotels, guesthouses, and various accommodation facilities.

Already, some hoteliers are rolling out festive promotions and early-bird discounts to sustain occupancy, due to the improvement in macroeconomic conditions.

At the Coconut Grove Hotel, for instance, CEO Ralph Ayitey noted that management views the festive season as an opportunity to position Ghana as a premium tourism destination while maintaining strong occupancy through targeted offers.

“Overall, I will say it is not just about celebration, but it should be a celebration with an intention of putting Ghana first and putting the best of Ghana forward,” he said.

“We have consciously reduced our prices so that customers can stay longer and benefit more, and have the chance to explore Ghana. So they can decide to undertake day trips outside Ghana, outside Accra, to maybe our resort in Elmina, or they can choose to go and stay there, or some may want to explore and go to say Obuasi,” Ralph Ayitey added.

Bookings are gradually firming up at the Saraphina Guest House as the peak season approaches. It management is focusing on delivering a memorable festive experience for guests.

“We are looking forward to welcoming customers from abroad. In response to feedback, we have made arrangements to provide gifts for our guests, an initiative aimed at improving their experience and encouraging repeat visits,” Deputy Manager of Saraphina Guest House, Narlia Munufieh, told Citi Business News.

Despite the positive outlook, hospitality players caution that cost pressures persist. some are considering price adjustments in 2026 in anticipation of higher utility tariffs.

“The utility tariff hike expected next year will impact our operations and as a result, we have made plans to increase room rates in 2026,” Narlia Munufieh mentioned.

Some industry players added also that more local sourcing and import substitution could help ease operating costs within the sector.

“Ghana first agenda is very, very important to me. I think it is one that for us as Coconut Grove, consciously sourcing as much as we can from local producers has been very helpful and beneficial to us and I want all hotels to take that up. Be it what your staff wear, be it the linen, if it can be produced locally, go for it,” Ralph Ayitey stressed.

Government Security Agencies Seize Vehicles Belonging to Two Wives of Chairman Wontumi

0

Government security agencies have reportedly seized vehicles belonging to two wives of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, in an operation whose full details are yet to be officially disclosed.

According to information circulating from security and political sources, the seizure took place as part of an ongoing action involving state security agencies. The exact number of vehicles involved, the locations where the operation was carried out, and the specific agency leading the move have not been formally confirmed as at the time of filing this report.

Authorities have also not publicly explained the legal basis for the seizure, leaving room for speculation about whether the action is linked to an investigation, court process, or broader enforcement exercise. No official statement has been released to clarify whether the vehicles were seized as evidence, for asset recovery purposes, or in connection with any alleged wrongdoing.

Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is a high-profile political figure whose activities often attract national attention. Developments involving him frequently spark public debate, particularly in the context of politics, governance, and the use of state power.

As of now, neither Chairman Wontumi nor his legal representatives have issued a public response to the reported seizure. It also remains unclear whether the two wives affected by the action have been formally notified of the reasons behind the seizure or whether they intend to challenge it legally.

Political observers say the lack of official communication from government security agencies has fueled uncertainty and heightened public interest. Civil society voices are calling for transparency, urging authorities to clearly explain the circumstances surrounding the operation to avoid misinformation and political tension.

The situation is still developing, and more information is expected to emerge as security agencies or government officials provide clarification. Until then, the reported seizure remains unconfirmed by official sources, with many awaiting an authoritative statement to explain the purpose and scope of the action.

All pupils kidnapped from Nigeria Catholic school now free – officials

0

Nigerian authorities say they have secured the release of the remaining 130 schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped from a Catholic boarding school in the country’s central Niger state.

Nigeria’s federal government described the latest release as a “moment of triumph and relief”, after one of the country’s worst mass kidnappings.

More than 250 children and staff were abducted from St Mary’s Catholic school in Papiri on 21 November. Earlier this month about 100 of the children were released.

The authorities confirmed “the rescue of the remaining 130 children and staff” in a statement, saying “not a single pupil is left in captivity”.

Niger state police chief Adamu Abdullahi Elleman told the BBC that they were being “examined by security forces and will be taken to their school tomorrow [Monday] to reunite with their families”.

Bishop Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, who is in charge of the school as the Catholic cleric who heads the region, also confirmed the development.

He said the local governor had informed him of the release of the remaining schoolchildren and teachers, and “asked me to come and receive them”.

Parents are in high spirits over the news of the release, Abdullahi Rofia, a local emergency worker in Papiri where the school is located, told the BBC. The parents are expected to gather at the school later in the day.

On Sunday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the total of freed students was now 230.

Since the kidnapping, the exact number of people taken and how many have remained in captivity has been unclear.

On 8 December, authorities secured the release of 99 children and one teacher, reportedly leaving at least 165 others with the kidnappers.

However, the Niger state police chief told the BBC that the 130 who have now been released account for all the remaining abductees, faulting the initial figures released by the school management.

It has not been formally made public how the government secured the latest release – or whether any ransom was paid.

The announcement by Onanuga included pictures of children smiling and waving. The students are expected to arrive in the Niger state capital, Minna, on Monday.

When the earlier release happened the governor of neighbouring Nasarawa state, Abdullahi Sule, told local media that the federal government had played a key role, adding that the behind-the-scenes efforts could not be disclosed for security reasons.

The Christian Association of Nigeria reported that 50 students managed to escape at the time of the kidnapping.

November’s abduction was the latest incident in a number of targeted attacks on schools and places of worship in north and central Nigeria.

The attack on St Mary’s was preceded by mass kidnappings just days earlier.

On 18 November, two people were killed and 38 abducted in an attack on the Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara state, and a day before that, two were killed and 25 Muslim students abducted from Government Girls’ Secondary School in Kebbi state.

All those taken in the Kwara and Kebbi attacks have since been freed.

It is not clear who is behind these kidnappings – most analysts believe they are carried out by criminal gangs seeking ransom payments.

On 9 December Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said his government would continue to work with Niger and other states “to secure our schools and make the learning environment safer and more conducive for our younger ones”.

“I Can’t Hide It Anymore” – Oheneba Ntim Alleges Daddy Lumba’s Body Was Sold to Occult Figures

0

A fresh wave of controversy has erupted in the ongoing disputes surrounding the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, following explosive claims made by media personality and social commentator Oheneba Ntim. Speaking during an interview aired on Royal TV, Oheneba Ntim alleged that Daddy Lumba’s body was “sold to occult people,” a statement that has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, the musician’s fan base, and the wider Ghanaian public.

According to Oheneba Ntim, his decision to speak out was not taken lightly. He claimed that he could no longer remain silent in the face of what he described as disturbing information surrounding the handling of the late musician’s remains after his death. “I can’t hide it anymore,” he declared on live television, insisting that serious questions must be asked about the events that followed Daddy Lumba’s passing and burial.

In his remarks, Oheneba Ntim directly mentioned Abusuapanin Tupac, a key figure within the family structure, accusing him of being central to decisions that have now become the subject of intense public scrutiny. While Oheneba Ntim did not provide documentary evidence to support his allegations, he claimed that his assertions were based on information he considered credible and too serious to ignore. He argued that the public, especially Daddy Lumba’s loyal fans, deserve clarity about what transpired behind closed doors.

Daddy Lumba, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians of all time, commanded enormous respect and admiration across generations. His death marked the end of an era in Ghanaian music, with thousands mourning him both at home and abroad. Since his burial, however, disputes involving family members, associates, and commentators have increasingly shifted attention away from his musical legacy to controversies surrounding his personal life, funeral arrangements, and inheritance matters.

Oheneba Ntim suggested that the alleged actions involving Daddy Lumba’s body were not only morally troubling but deeply offensive to cultural values and the dignity of the deceased. He stressed that, in Ghanaian tradition, the dead are to be treated with the utmost respect, and any actions perceived to violate this principle risk spiritual and cultural consequences. According to him, such matters cannot simply be brushed aside as rumours, given the stature of the late musician.

Reacting to the claims, some cultural analysts and traditional observers have urged caution, emphasizing that allegations of this nature are extremely sensitive and capable of inflaming emotions. They warn that without verifiable evidence, such statements could deepen family rifts and cause unnecessary distress to loved ones of the late musician. Others, however, argue that the persistent nature of the disputes suggests unresolved issues that may require transparent clarification from those closest to the matter.

Social media reactions have been swift and divided. While some users applauded Oheneba Ntim for what they see as courage in speaking out, others accused him of making sensational claims that risk tarnishing Daddy Lumba’s memory. Several fans called for the family to address the allegations directly to put lingering doubts to rest, rather than allowing speculation to dominate public discourse.

Royal TV’s interview has since reignited debates about the boundaries between public interest and private family matters, particularly when it involves national icons. Media ethics experts note that while public figures attract scrutiny even after death, allegations of occult practices are especially delicate and should be handled responsibly to avoid misinformation and panic.

As of now, Abusuapanin Tupac has not issued an official response to Oheneba Ntim’s claims. Observers say his reaction, if any, will be critical in determining whether the controversy escalates further or begins to subside. Calls have also grown for respected traditional authorities or neutral mediators to intervene, with the aim of restoring calm and protecting the dignity of the late musician.

For many Ghanaians, Daddy Lumba’s enduring legacy lies in his music, which continues to inspire and unite people across generations. Whether the latest allegations lead to clarification or further controversy remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the discussion has once again placed Daddy Lumba’s family affairs under intense national spotlight.

NDC Made a Strategic Mistake Putting Basintale in a Public Office to Be Enjoying AC- Oliver-Barker

0

Prominent Ghanaian youth activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has sparked a heated debate within political circles with a candid social media post criticizing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s decision to appoint Malik Basintale, the party’s Deputy National Communications Officer, as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA). Barker-Vormawor argues that the appointment was a strategic misstep, urging the NDC to redeploy Basintale to a role focused on mobilizing the party’s grassroots base.

In a detailed post, Barker-Vormawor praised Basintale’s exceptional ability to galvanize youth support during the 2024 general election campaign, describing him as a “revelation” with “great street credibility” in mobilizing enthusiasm. However, he expressed concern that placing Basintale in a bureaucratic role stifles his potential to maintain the NDC’s high-energy political engagement. “Politics is emotions. Emotional connection and constant high-energy engagement,” Barker-Vormawor wrote, emphasizing that the NDC should not abandon its mobilization tactics once in government.

Barker-Vormawor argued that Basintale’s talents would be better utilized outside of government, rallying young people across Ghana to sustain enthusiasm for NDC policies. “Malik should have been kept outside Government. His full-time job should have been deploying him across the country to continue to rally young people behind the government and government policies,” he stated. He suggested that Basintale, with adequate resources, could have built a “massive national profile” akin to former President Jerry Rawlings, fostering long-term loyalty to the NDC.

The activist lamented that the NDC’s mobilization infrastructure has been “demobilized” since taking office, with young supporters left seeking unattainable jobs while Basintale is “sorting between Zoomlion contracts and per diem allowances.” He contrasted this with the approach of Dr. Frank Amoakohene in the Ashanti Region, who he believes exemplifies the energy needed to maintain generational enthusiasm for the party.

Drawing a historical parallel, Barker-Vormawor referenced the Convention People’s Party (CPP) under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, noting that its relentless mobilization efforts led to consistent landslide victories. He criticized the NDC for redirecting key communicators like Basintale, Sammy Gyamfi, and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to administrative roles, arguing that this shift weakens the party’s connection with its base. “Get Malik out to the streets; give him a budget to mobilize the base 24/7,” he urged.

As Ghana’s political landscape continues to evolve, Barker-Vormawor’s remarks highlight the tension between governance and grassroots mobilization, raising questions about how the NDC can maintain its electoral momentum ahead of future elections

“I Will Not Allow Pain to Cage Me” – Widow of John Kumah Speaks on New Husband

0

According to a report by Ghanaweb on Monday, December 22, 2025, Apostle Lilian Owusu, widow of the late Ghanaian politician Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, has opened up about her remarriage, saying she refuses to let past pain control her life. Speaking in a recent interview, Lilian said, “I will not allow pain to cage me. Life must go on, and I have chosen to embrace happiness once again.”

The late Dr. Kumah, who was the Deputy Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, passed away on March 7, 2024, leaving behind a grieving family. His death shocked the nation, but Lilian has been determined to move forward while honoring her late husband’s memory.

In her statement, Lilian revealed that her decision to remarry is not about replacing her late husband but about continuing to live fully. She said, “I have prayed over this decision, sought guidance from my family and church leaders, and I believe God brought the right person into my life at the right time.” She also emphasized that she is grateful for the support of her children and close friends during this period of transition.

According to Ghanaweb, Lilian’s new marriage has been met with mixed reactions from the public. While some Ghanaians applauded her courage to embrace life again, others expressed surprise at how soon she has moved on. Despite the varying opinions, Lilian remains focused on her faith and happiness, saying, “I have chosen to rise above criticism and focus on what brings joy and peace to my heart.”

Her remarks underscore the importance of resilience and the ability to seek happiness even after loss. Lilian’s decision to remarry more than a year after her husband’s death serves as an example of moving forward with dignity and faith. As she steps into this new chapter, many are hopeful that her story will inspire others to embrace life’s second chances with courage and positivity.

Ghana deports 68 foreigners from Ashanti, with Nigerians making up the largest share

0

The deportees include 42 Nigerians, 13 Cameroonians, seven Beninese, three Ivorians, and three Burkinabe nationals. The operation was carried out by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) after the conclusion of legal processes, according to Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene.

In a statement published on his Facebook page, Amoakohene praised the GIS for what he described as “professionalism, diligence, and firm commitment to enforcing our immigration laws,” while stressing that due process and human dignity were observed throughout the exercise.

He added that cooperation between immigration officers, the courts, and other security agencies was critical to maintaining public safety and protecting vulnerable persons in the region.

The Ashanti deportations reflect a broader African dilemma: the gap between aspirations for open borders and the realities of weak enforcement and rising transnational crime.

Criminal networks, human trafficking rings, and migration-related fraud have increasingly exploited porous borders, making governments more cautious about liberal entry policies. As a result, security concerns often override integration goals.

These actions highlight how instability, limited regional coordination, and criminal exploitation of migration routes have pushed states toward restrictive, enforcement-heavy approaches.

For countries like Ghana, the challenge lies in balancing regional solidarity with domestic security. While deportations are framed as lawful responses to criminality, they also expose how fragile border governance has become across the continent.

Temporary outages expected as GRIDCo connects new Anwomaso plant

0

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced planned works on the 330kV Takoradi–Thermal–Anwomaso Transmission Line as part of efforts to connect a new power generation plant at Anwomaso in Kumasi to the national grid.

The announcement follows a temporary power outage that affected parts of Greater Kumasi on Sunday, December 21, 2025, after a minor fault at GRIDCo led to a reduction in electricity supply to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In a press statement issued the same day, GRIDCo said the works are being undertaken by AKSA Energy to bring its newly constructed power generation plant at Anwomaso into operation.

According to GRIDCo, the plant, when fully commissioned, will add to Ghana’s generation capacity and significantly improve the reliability of power supply to Kumasi and surrounding communities.

As part of the commissioning process, an exercise is being carried out to safely connect the AKSA Anwomaso Generating Plant to the national power system via the 330kV transmission line. GRIDCo said the activity may require a temporary interruption of power supply to some customers for approximately three hours to allow for the safe termination and integration of the new substation.

Power supply to all affected customers is expected to be fully restored by 11:00 p.m. on the same day.

GRIDCo apologised for any inconvenience the temporary interruption may cause and assured the public that the works are necessary to enhance the stability and reliability of electricity supply in Kumasi and adjoining areas.

The Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah, popularly known as Sticka, has criticised former Adansi-Asokwa Member of Parliament, Kobina Tahir Hammond, over comments questioning the source of wealth of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong.

The comments that sparked the controversy were sent via a text message by KT Hammond during a one-on-one interview with Sticka on Asempa FM on December 18, 2025, where he raised concerns about the origins of Kennedy Agyapong’s wealth as part of discussions surrounding the NPP flagbearership race.

KT Hammond’s remarks did not sit well with Sticka, who described the comments as unfair and inappropriate, especially given Hammond’s long-standing association with Kennedy Agyapong within the party.

Reacting to the interview, Sticka accused the former lawmaker of engaging in what he described as “hate speech” against the former Assin Central MP.

NPP Primaries: K.T Hammond breaks silence on ‘betraying’ Kennedy Agyapong

“Respectfully, KT Hammond, this is hate speech, how can you say someone should come and answer questions about how Kennedy Agyapong made his money?”

He questioned why Hammond, who has served as a minister and held senior leadership positions within the NPP, would raise such concerns publicly if he truly believed any wrongdoing had taken place.

“He has been a friend to Kennedy Agyapong. If Kennedy had stolen money before and KT Hammond has been a minister and a leader in the NPP, why did he sit down and not ensure that Kennedy was arrested?” Sticka asked.

Sticka further defended Kennedy Agyapong’s background, insisting that the outspoken former lawmaker rose from humble beginnings through legitimate means.

“What I know is that Kennedy Agyapong started as a poor, humble beginner, Kennedy has never done anything illegal because he has never been arrested before.”

“Have you heard of the NDC inviting or arresting Kennedy Agyapong before?” Sticka questioned.

According to the Nhyiaeso MP, Kennedy Agyapong has consistently supported the NPP and contributed significantly to job creation through his business ventures.

“All I know is that Kennedy Agyapong has been helping the party over the years and has opened businesses where many people are working,” he added.

Ghana Has Retrogressed to the Dark Ages Under Your Reign; Your Reset Has Become A Nightmare- Sarpong

News Hub Creator8h

Political commentator affiliated with the New Patriotic Party P.K Sarpong has accused President John Dramani Mahama of betraying his promise of a “reset” for good governance and free speech.

Sarpong’s letter claims that Ghanaians had high hopes for Mahama’s presidency, expecting a new era of prosperity and respect for fundamental rights. However, he argues that the administration has instead ushered in a “reign of terror,” with citizens being arrested for using “unsavoury language” on social media.

The letter questions the legal basis for the arrests, asking, “What laws can be used against whatever they’re alleged to have said on the show?” Sarpong argues that while the TikTokers’ views may have been unpalatable, their actions were far from criminal. He calls for their immediate release, warning that Ghana is regressing to the “dark ages” of the 1980s under Mahama’s leadership.

Further intensifying the criticism, Sarpong references Mahama’s reported membership in the Ghana Journalists Association, questioning how a trained journalist could oversee what he describes as the worst mistreatment of journalists and media users since the early 1990s.

He also alludes to a controversial case involving Kevin Taylor, a fugitive allegedly housed in the Vice President’s residence and granted state protection before being freed under questionable circumstances, though no further details are provided to substantiate this claim.

The media is the lifeblood of democracy – Afenyo-Markin declares

0

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has described the media as the “lifeblood of democracy,” commending the Parliamentary Press Corps for its extensive and professional coverage of proceedings during the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on Friday, the Effutu MP praised journalists for their dedication and objectivity, noting that their work promotes transparency and keeps the public informed about the work of the legislature.

He said the media’s role remains critical in strengthening democratic accountability and public trust in Parliament.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also used the occasion to urge Members of Parliament to prioritise their health during the recess, stressing the importance of regular medical check-ups.

“Knowing your health condition is better in order to treat it,” he said, encouraging colleagues to take advantage of the break to address personal wellbeing ahead of the next session.

Touching on parliamentary affairs, the Minority Leader expressed concern over alleged attempts to remove him and summon him before the Privileges Committee over claims that he disobeyed a parliamentary resolution regarding Ghana’s representation at the ECOWAS Parliament.

He maintained that he currently serves as the Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, with a mandate running until 2028, insisting that “no one can remove me.”

He further called for cooperation across party lines, stressing that collaboration is essential for Parliament to function effectively as a pillar of Ghana’s democracy.

Parliament adjourned sine die on Friday, December 19, 2025, bringing to a close the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament after 35 sittings over nine weeks.

The House considered a range of motions, bills and reports, engaged in debates on key national issues, and carried out oversight responsibilities across multiple sectors.

The adjournment marks the start of the Christmas recess, with Parliament expected to reconvene in the new year to begin a fresh meeting and consider new legislative business.

KK Fosu Explains Why Many Musicians Missed Daddy Lumba’s Funeral

0

Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician and “Anadwo Ye De” hitmaker, KK Fosu, has finally broken his silence on the controversy surrounding the low turnout of musicians at the funeral of the late music legend, Daddy Lumba. Speaking after months of emotional withdrawal following the icon’s passing, KK Fosu attributed the situation largely to the role played by Abusuapanin Tupac, a key family representative involved in the funeral arrangements.

According to KK Fosu, the absence of many musicians at Daddy Lumba’s funeral was not due to disrespect or lack of love for the late legend, but rather the way communication and coordination were handled by those managing the funeral process. He alleged that Abusuapanin Tupac failed to properly engage, inform, or involve musicians and industry stakeholders who were eager to pay their last respects to one of Ghana’s greatest musical exports.

KK Fosu explained that Daddy Lumba was not just a family member but a national treasure whose influence spanned generations of musicians and music lovers. As such, he believes the funeral should have been handled in a more inclusive and transparent manner, especially toward colleagues who shared personal and professional bonds with the late highlife icon.

The musician revealed that several artistes were willing to attend, perform, or officially participate in the funeral rites but were left confused due to unclear instructions, lack of invitations, and poor coordination. This, he said, created the false public impression that musicians deliberately abandoned Daddy Lumba in death.

His comments have since sparked intense debate on social media, with some Ghanaians supporting his claims and calling for accountability, while others argue that funeral arrangements remain the sole responsibility of the family and should not be politicised or publicly criticised.

As discussions continue, many industry players and fans agree on one thing: Daddy Lumba’s impact on Ghanaian music remains unmatched, and his legacy will continue to live on through the countless hits and artistes he inspired. The controversy surrounding his funeral has also reignited calls for better collaboration between families and the creative community when national icons pass on.

How can a Stanford graduate complain about top US lawyers?

Adom Otherer has argued that Dr Ayine himself is widely regarded as a top-tier lawyer play videoAdom Otherer has argued that Dr Ayine himself is widely regarded as a top-tier lawyer

Ghanaian media personality and former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has taken a swipe at the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, over comments made at a recent press conference concerning former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on his Good Evening Ghana programme while reviewing the Attorney-General’s latest Government Accountability Series press briefing, Adom-Otchere questioned the relevance and intent of Dr Ayine’s repeated references to the “top lawyers” reportedly hired by Ofori-Atta in the United States.

Here’s how much Ken Ofori-Atta could be paying top US lawyers in extradition fight

At the press conference, the Attorney-General announced that extradition processes had begun to bring Ofori-Atta back to Ghana to face trial.

He explained that the former Finance Minister, who is currently outside the country, has engaged highly experienced lawyers in the United States and is expected to challenge the extradition through the American court system.

Dr Ayine noted that the case could move from the U.S. District Court to the Circuit Court and, potentially, to the US Supreme Court, a process that could significantly delay Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana.

Reacting to these remarks, Adom-Otchere expressed confusion over why the country’s chief legal officer would repeatedly stress the calibre of lawyers on the opposing side.

He argued that Dr Ayine himself is widely regarded as a top-tier lawyer, having graduated from Stanford University and questioned what message was being sent to the public.

“Now, the Attorney General then also says, we are not too sure what we should make of that, that the former Finance Minister Ken Oferiata will be hiring very, very powerful lawyers, very powerful lawyers. I’m not sure what psychology that is building up.

“Why is our lawyer telling us that the opponent is that…the opponent could have top, top, lawyers? But we recognize Dominic Ayine who is a Stanford University graduate, as a very, very, top lawyer.

“Then we learned Dominic Ayine he’s a graduate of Stanford University, “he said.

He continued, “I think Stanford is Ivy League, isn’t it? Just Stanford University graduate. So, he’s a top lawyer. Then he, in whom we trust, is holding a press conference and then he’s telling us that, Ken Ofori Atta, he is going to hire top lawyers.

“What should we do with that? Attorney General, sorry to you. What should we do with that information?”

Haruna & Ayariga Humble Afenyo-Markin as Parliament Passes Dombo University Rename Bill

News Hub Creator12h

In a heated session at Parliament, Members of Parliament Haruna Iddrisu and Mahama Ayariga commended Minority Leader Samuel Afenyo-Markin for his steadfast advocacy and principled stance, even as the House passed the controversial Dombo University Rename Bill.

The debate, which drew on issues of political tolerance, democratic norms, and respect for historical legacies, saw Afenyo-Markin caution against partisan-driven decisions, emphasizing the importance of consensus-building and consultation with affected communities. He highlighted that university names are symbolic, honoring the contributions of founders like President Jerry John Rollins, who invested personal resources to establish universities focused on regional development.

Despite objections and procedural challenges, the Majority insisted on moving forward. They argued that they had the numbers and parliamentary authority to pass the bill, ultimately securing approval for the renaming of Dombo University. The session underscored tensions between respect for historical legacies and the exercise of parliamentary majority power.

Haruna and Ayariga, while aligned with the Majority on the bill, publicly acknowledged Afenyo-Markin’s principled approach, noting that his calls for political tolerance and fair play serve as reminders of the importance of democratic integrity in governance.

The passage of the bill marks a significant development in Ghana’s higher education landscape, with implications for institutional identity, community representation, and national cohesion.

ICU urges govt to address SOEs challenges

0

The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) has called on the Government to address challenges facing key State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and to provide support for initiatives that will create jobs for youth.

The Union said the intervention was necessary to strengthen the operational capacity of these enterprises, stimulate economic growth, and provide much-needed employment opportunities for young Ghanaians.

It noted that many of the country’s SOEs had faced financial difficulties that limited their contribution to national development and job creation.

In a statement signed by ICU General Secretary, Morgan Ayawine, and shared with The Ghanaian Times, the Union commended the Government for recapitalising the National Investment Bank Limited to enhance its effectiveness in driving national economic growth.

It also called for urgent support for COCOBOD and other key State-Owned Enterprises, including PBC Limited, Volta Star Textile Limited, Graphic Communications Group Limited, New Times Corporation, New Neoplan Ghana Limited, and the Pwalugu Tomatoes Factory.

It further urged that processes for ALUWORKS be finalised to allow the company to resume operations, highlighting that these measures would create jobs for unemployed youth and strengthen socioeconomic development.

The statement further praised Ghanaian workers for their dedication and sacrifices throughout 2025, acknowledging their vital role in supporting national growth despite rising living costs.

It encouraged them to build on the modest economic gains of the year and maintain their efforts into 2026.

On industrial relations, the statement emphasised collaboration with social partners and strict adherence to labour laws and collective agreements. It warned anti-union employers against preventing unionisation, casualising jobs, or withholding workers’ rightful wages and benefits, stressing that such practices carry serious consequences.

The ICU appealed to Ghanaian workers to continue their contributions toward sustainable national growth and shared prosperity, extending warm Christmas greetings and best wishes for the New Year.

Dignitaries, sports fans, and supporters flocked to the Legon Sports Stadium for the event. As the crowd erupted in cheers and celebration, the air was electric with anticipation.

Even more upbeat was the atmosphere when Farida showed up, representing encouragement beyond the strictly competitive aspect of the tournament. Ghana-Nigeria trade rift looms amid legal dispute – UK Certified Customer Communication and Marketer warns

0

A commercial dispute in Nigeria involving a Ghanaian firm, River Park Estate in the Nigerian Capital, Abuja, owned by Dr Sam Jonah, threatens to strain an important economic tie between the two West African nations, prompting calls for urgent intervention and stakeholder advocacy.

The case, which is currently before a Nigerian court, has raised huge concerns within Ghana’s investment community. Allegations of actions affecting the business despite ongoing litigation have fueled apprehension about judicial process and institutional conduct.

“This moment calls for decisive engagement by the Government of Ghana. There is a clear responsibility to protect the interests of its businesses operating abroad, particularly where credible concerns arise about fairness and due process. This is not confrontation, but a protection of Ghana’s investment credibility,” said analyst Yaw Barima

Mr. Barima stressed that the stable legal environment in Ghana has long been a foundation for Nigerian business success in the country.

“Nigerian enterprises have thrived here because property rights are respected and contracts are enforced. That goodwill, however, is not inexhaustible.”

He argues that Nigerian businesses operating in Ghana now have an important role to play. “They must not remain silent; they are uniquely positioned to act as responsible stakeholders by urging their own government to ensure restraint and respect for court processes. Silence risks allowing perceptions of injustice to harden,” Mr. Barima said.

The analyst warns that the consequences of inaction could extend far beyond a single legal case.

“Unchecked perceptions can shape public sentiment, influence regulation, and strain bilateral economic relations. Ghana and Nigeria are too interdependent to allow a single dispute to escalate,” he said.

According to Mr. Barima, the issue is a matter of mutual interest and pragmatic economics. He added that when justice appears selective, commerce becomes fragile. The lesson is clear; justice administered at home carries consequences abroad.

Meet Bishop James Sam who is serving a two-year, two-month prison sentence for stealing

Bishop James Sam, is currently serving a two-year, two-month jail term at the Winneba Local Prison play videoBishop James Sam, is currently serving a two-year, two-month jail term at the Winneba Local Prison

Bishop James Sam, a 31-year-old father of three, is currently serving a two-year, two-month jail term at the Winneba Local Prison.

The Liberian-born man, who is the son of a Ghanaian mother, has shared the circumstances that led to his incarceration.

According to Bishop Sam, who also works as a mason, he moved to Ghana in 2011 to live with his mother, a prophetess. However, due to what he described as a troubled lifestyle, including the smoking of marijuana, his mother eventually asked him to leave the house.

Speaking in an interview with Crime Check, Bishop Sam explained that after being sacked from his mother’s home, he had no option but to seek shelter in an uncompleted building where he served as a caretaker.

He revealed that during his stay there, he took a metal item from the building and sold it as scrap for GH¢500.

According to him, when the person who allowed him to stay in the building discovered the missing metal and confronted him, he admitted selling it.

The man reportedly forgave him but explained that the house did not belong to him and that the decision of the actual owner would prevail.

Bishop Sam said he later contacted the owner of the building, who informed him that the metal was worth GH¢2,400 and demanded full payment or the return of the item. Unable to trace the scrap dealer or raise the money, he was subsequently arrested and sentenced.

Sharing his remorse, Bishop Sam said, “My attitude brought me here. I used to stay with my mother after I came back from Liberia but I was disrespectful towards her, so she sacked me from the house and asked me to go to my father. I didn’t have money, so I started doing scrap work and found shelter at an uncompleted house.

Pastor jailed 519 years for defrauding over 100 people

“There was a metal there that I took and sold for GH¢500. When the man who gave me the place to stay came and asked about the metal, I told him I had sold it. He said he had forgiven me, but the house does not belong to him, so whatever the owner decides would stand.

“The owner said the metal was worth GH¢2,400, so either I pay or return it. I went to look for the person I sold it to, but I couldn’t find him, and I couldn’t raise the money, so I ended up in prison.”

Meanwhile Bishop’s fine has been paid and he is expected to return home after necessary procedure.

Govt releases GH¢139m ‘X’mas’ LEAP for 350,580 households

0

THE government has released GH¢139.33 million to support about 350,580 beneficiary households nationwide.

This represents the 99th cycle of payments under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme.

The nationwide disbursement, which begins today, will benefit an estimated 1.5 million Ghanaians, reinforcing the programme’s position as a central pillar of the country’s social protection framework.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Friday, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP), Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said the timely release of funds demonstrated government’s renewed commitment to serving the extremely poor and vulnerable through responsive and reliable social interventions.

She explained that under the bi-monthly grant structure, households with one eligible beneficiary would receive GH¢320, those with two eligible members GH¢380, three eligible members GH¢440, while households with four or more eligible members would receive GH¢530.

According to the minister, the 99th cycle payment had been deliberately timed to coincide with the festive season, a period often characterised by heightened financial pressure on low-income households.

“This intervention is intended to provide essential support to beneficiary households, enabling them to participate more meaningfully in the Christmas festivities and to approach the New Year with dignity and hope,” she indicated.

Dr Lartey described LEAP as more than a cash transfer programme, noting that it represented government’s social contract with the most vulnerable citizens and its resolve to leave no one behind in national development.

She disclosed that in line with the commitment of government, the Ministry of Finance had made a historic allocation of GH¢1.1 billion to the LEAP Programme, the highest since its inception.

The minister also underlined that the unprecedented allocation underscored government’s determination to scale up support for the poor and vulnerable and acknowledged the advocacy role played by Members of Parliament and other stakeholders in securing the funding.

Dr Lartey further announced that 2026 would mark a major expansion of the programme, with coverage expected to increase from the current levels to 400,000 households across the country.

She said the expansion would extend life-changing support to thousands of additional households living in extreme poverty, but stressed that its success would depend on collaboration among stakeholders at all levels.

The minister, therefore, appealed to traditional authorities, religious bodies, civil society organisations and relevant government agencies to support beneficiary identification and programme implementation to ensure fairness, transparency and impact.

“As we disburse grants under the 99th cycle, we are doing more than transferring funds, we are sharing hope, upholding dignity and demonstrating the solidarity of the government with the people of Ghana,” Dr Lartey added.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the poor, empowering the vulnerable and building a resilient and inclusive society.
