I’m going to contest for NPP flagbearership, nobody can stop me – Kennedy Agyapong

0

Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong.

Former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has indicated his readiness to contest the flagbearerhip again if nominations are opened.

He indicated that his team is resolute despite alleged intimidation from persons belonging to other camps who have shown interest in the race.

Mr Agyapong was speaking after announcing his withdrawal from the party’s ‘Thank You Tour’ following a stabbing incident in Kumasi involving one of his supporters.

“I am taking this opportunity to inform all that I am going to contest; nobody can stop me from doing that. They should be ready. We were part of those who built the party and sacrificed for it,” he said.

He added that, “we will also regroup ourselves, in the appropriate time we will do whatever we have to do for the party, and anything that will improve our chances.”

The young supporter is alleged to have been stabbed for resisting attempts by some thugs to retrieve a gift of cash received from a friend of Kennedy Agyapong.

The tough-talking politician has refused to respond to allegations and alleged assaults, but insists on fighting for justice for the student.

The stabbing incident has already been reported to the police, with three spent bullet shells as evidence for the discharge of firearms by heavily built men.

“In my normal style, I would have retaliated easily because we know the guy,” Mr Agyapong indicated, referencing the individual who led the assault.

According to the NPP stalwart, persons showing up at various venues of the party’s ‘Thank You Tour’ have often been threatened.

Others are alleged to have regularly published fake stories to tarnish his image and negatively impact his potential candidature.

“From Berekum to Kumasi, all that has happened tells me that we are not needed. Let them do their own thing,” said Kennedy.

According to him, his security team indicated their inability to guarantee the safety of his entourage and others who will troop to the various venues for his sake.

“My team and I will have to pull out after what happened yesterday. Lives are threatened; I don’t think I can protect my team enough,” he announced.

“I admit Dr Bawumia was the flagbearer, so if he is going round and for the sake of unity, he invites us and it turns out to be something different, I have to stay away, so they do.”

The companies are namely; Golden Team Mining Company Limited, Akroma Gold Limited, Adamus Resources Limited, Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, Goldstone Akrokeri Limited, Earl International Group (GH) Limited, Xtra Gold Mining Limited, Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited and Gan He Mining Resource Development Limited.

Under the Agreement, the mining companies will deliver 20% of any gold they seek to export out of the country to the GoldBod in the form of doré bars at a designated collection point, which shall be the Assay Laboratory of the GoldBod at the Kotoka International Airport.

Dumsor Is Back With Mahama Again – Bawumia

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia addressing party members

THE 2024 flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said dumsor is back again with President John Mahama despite his promise to provide efficient power supply.

“Dumsor has started again immediately they came into office. By 2028, all Ghanaians will see their lies,” he said to party faithful yesterday during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of Bono Region.

There are so many promises they made to Ghanaians but are now retreating; they are not able to stop galamsey, they promised to pay 7,000 cedis to cocoa farmers but are now saying they did not get the right information, they also promised to cancel licensure exams but now only interested in terminating appointments of people employed since 2017, Dr. Bawumia stated.

He disclosed that, the ‘Thank You Tour’ is unifying since all former flagbearer primary contenders are with him, stressing it is necessary to thank all party faithful including patriots, council of elders, communicators, polling station executives and constituency executives who worked hard towards the 2024 elections.

Dr. Bawumia firmly rejected claims that his religious background contributed to the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general election. He said the party worked hard and introduced several good policies, adding that the NPP shall win again but this time they would prioritise employment.

“It is not about religion. Sunyani East and Wenchi were won by Muslims (MPs). I got more votes than Ntim Fordjour in the Assin North Constituency. If it were religion, there are 236 Christian constituencies where their parliamentary candidates would have gotten more votes, but in many of these constituencies I got more votes than the parliamentary candidates,” he stated.

The former Vice President attributed the loss to apathy within party members who failed to vote in their strongholds, pointing out that, according to research, about 2.1m NPP voters did not turn up, and Mahama won by 1.7m votes, saying, “So if all our people voted for us, we would have won. The NDC did not appreciate in votes. It is not that NDC won but our people did not vote.”

Oil Production Falls For Fifth Year – PIAC Report

0

Ghana’s crude oil production has declined for the fifth year on a roll, dropping from a peak of 71.44 million barrels in 2019 to 48.25 million barrels in 2024.

This was contained in the 2024 Annual Report released by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) in Accra yesterday.

The report highlights a marginal year-on-year decline of 0.01 percent and an average annual drop of 7.4 percent over the five-year period.

This decline raises concerns about the sustainability of the country’s upstream petroleum sector and the long-term economic implications.

The report also reveals that total proceeds from GNPC Explorco’s liftings in 2024 — amounting to US$145.68 million — were not paid into the Petroleum Holding Fund (PHF), as required by law.

This omission brings the cumulative total of unpaid revenues held by JOHL and subsequently GNPC Explorco to US$488.79 million as of the end of 2024.

GNPC maintains that revenues from Explorco liftings are not obligated to be paid into the PHF, a position PIAC has repeatedly challenged.

The oversight committee has called for clarity and legal adherence in the management of such revenues to ensure transparency and accountability in the sector.

Additionally, the report highlights persistent surface rental arrears, with international oil companies (IOCs) owing the government US$2.89 million in unpaid fees as of December 2024.

Notably, around 60 percent of these arrears are owed by three companies whose petroleum agreements were terminated in 2021, raising questions about enforcement and revenue recovery mechanisms.

The Ghana Gold Board has agreed with nine large-scale mining companies to retain 20 per cent of their gold output in the country.

The arrangement was announced in a Facebook post on April 30 2025, by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Mr Sammy Gyamfi. It follows negotiations with companies that are not part of the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

The nine companies, Golden Team Mining Company Limited, Akroma Gold Limited, Adamus Resources Limited, Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, Goldstone Akrokeri Limited, Earl International Group (GH) Limited, Xtra Gold Mining Limited, Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited and Gan He Mining Resource Development Limited, have agreed to sell a fifth of their export-bound gold to the Ghana Gold Board.

Beginning June 1, 2025, each company will be required to deliver the specified portion of gold in the form of doré bars to the Board’s Assay Laboratory at the Kotoka International Airport. Payment will be made in Ghana cedis, based on the daily interbank exchange rate published by the Bank of Ghana.

The GoldBod has said payments will be made within two working days of delivery, with the price pegged to the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA AM) spot rate, less a one per cent discount.

The agreement is expected to be formally signed on May 15, 2025.

Mr Gyamfi said the arrangement is part of government efforts to improve local gold retention, boost reserves, and reduce pressure on the cedi.

He acknowledged the role of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the participating companies in reaching the deal, which supports the current administration’s economic direction under President John Dramani Mahama.

I’ll deal with you in a way you won’t see coming – LilWin warns TV stations against pirating his movies

Kumawood actor and filmmaker, LilWin Kumawood actor and filmmaker, LilWin

Kumawood actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has cautioned television networks across Ghana against airing his films without authorisation.

In a video shared on his social media platforms on April 29, 2025, the actor did not hide his frustration as he called out some TV station owners and executives for broadcasting both Ghanaian and Nigerian movies without proper licensing.

According to LilWin, while these broadcasters are willing to invest in foreign series, particularly telenovelas, they often neglect local content creators and resort to pirating African films from platforms like YouTube.

“I don’t understand how these stations can afford to pay for telenovelas yet choose to download Nigerian films for free and air them,” he said.

He made it clear that any illegal use of his productions, especially those uploaded on his YouTube channel, would be met with serious consequences.

LilWin revealed that he is ready to take legal action against offenders, and should legal procedures drag on, he hinted at alternative ways of handling the situation.

“The amount of money I’ll claim when I take legal action… And if the case delays, I’ll deal with it in a way you won’t see coming,” he warned.

Notable personalities who have slammed the GBA over their demands

0

L-R: Thadeus Sory, Justice Srem-Sai, Franklin Cudjoe and Prof Ransford Gyampo L-R: Thadeus Sory, Justice Srem-Sai, Franklin Cudjoe and Prof Ransford Gyampo

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is facing significant scrutiny and criticisms after submitting a list of demands to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

According to the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), the suspension of the Chief Justice by the president is deemed unconstitutional.

The GBA contends that President Mahama, not being a judicial officer, lacks the legal authority to unilaterally exercise discretion in suspending the Chief Justice, as no existing laws confer such power upon him.

“The Ghana Bar Association calls for the immediate revocation of the suspension of the Chief Justice, as it considers the suspension to be unconstitutional, considering the fact that the President, who is not a judge or judicial officer, exercised his discretion to suspend the Chief Justice under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution in the absence of a published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument, or Regulation(s) governing the exercise of his said discretion as required by Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution,” part of the resolution reads.

The Ghana Bar Association’s resolution has sparked public criticisms, particularly from legal experts, who are questioning the basis and justification for the Association’s demands — especially in light of an earlier statement from the GBA, which emphasised the need for the rule of law to prevail in the ongoing developments surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension.

GhanaWeb takes a look at some notable personalities who have since criticised the GBA over its demands:

Thaddeus Sory

Thaddeus Sory, a private legal practitioner, weighing in on the Ghana Bar Association’s demands, calling for the complete revocation and suspension of the association itself, describing its demands as “legally flawed and disrespectful.”

Sharing his views, the legal practitioner stated that the president’s suspension of the Chief Justice, carried out in consultation with the Council of State in accordance with Article 146, did not breach or violate any laws.

He further criticised the GBA for attempting to interpret the law as though it were their exclusive domain, urging them to seek redress in the courts if they believe they have a legitimate case against the president regarding the Chief Justice’s suspension.

“If the Bar believes it has a case, let it go to court. But history is not on their side. Past attempts have yielded embarrassing defeats. Even outside of constitutional litigation, our respected colleague Ward Brew has repeatedly prevailed in court against the Bar. The law is not the sole preserve of the Bar’s interpretation. The law is not in the bosom of the Bar!” parts of his statement read.

Franklin Cudjoe

The Founding President of IMANI Africa, in his criticism of the Ghana Bar association, did not mince words, describing the association’s leadership as politically-biased.

He questioned the association’s sudden statement on the Chief Justice’s suspension, expressing concern over their apparent silence on the infringement of the voting rights of constituents in the SALL area, suggesting a selective approach to advocacy.

“The GBA claims it is REASSERTING itself! They did nothing for SALL. Politically bias leadership!!”, he posted on Facebook on April 29, 2025.

Srem-Sai

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has also criticised the Ghana Bar Association, accusing it of attempting to subvert the constitution through its demands for the prima facie case against the Chief Justice to be made public.

Speaking to TV3 on April 29, 2025, he said “If a group of lawyers meet at an event and decide that the best call they can make is that the president unmakes that which the constitution says should be private, be made public, what does that tell you? It tells you that it is a group who are trying to subvert the constitution.

“Do they need to go to law school to understand that when the constitution says something should be private, and a series of court decisions confirm that the process, including the petition, the conversation, and everything about it should be private?”

Prof Ransford Gyampo

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Ransford Gyampo, in a series of posts on Facebook, criticised the Ghana Bar Association, accusing them of raising their critical voices only when a particular political party or government is in power.

According to him, he questioned the seemingly hypocritical nature of the Ghana Bar Association, asserting that the association appeared to speak out only on certain issues, while remaining silent for a prolonged period prior to the inception of the current government.

“The sudden discovery of voice by the 43-Member GBA after their deafening 8-year silence is nauseating. Who formed this association? Was this hypocritical selective activism part of their enabling charter? Ghanaians must call them out!” he said.

He further mocked the Ghana Bar Association as being a legal body whose contentions contradict established laws, cautioning them to be mindful of their actions.

He warned that their behavior could lead to them becoming irrelevant in public opinion and erode the trust between the association and the public.

“A Ghana Bar Association that only speaks when one particular regime is in power; and a Ghana Bar Association whose position on a legal matter cannot be found in law, may soon be called a Ghana “Chop” Bar Association if it doesn’t repent,” he wrote.

GTDC targets innovation, tech overhaul for tourism

0

Professor Kobby Mensah, CEO of GTDC Professor Kobby Mensah, CEO of GTDC

The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) has noted plans to boost the country’s tourism landscape through innovation and technology.

According to its Chief Executive, Professor Kobby Mensah, the company is moving beyond traditional infrastructure to embrace digital solutions that will transform service delivery, enhance competitiveness and ensure local businesses benefit more from the tourism value chain.

“We have constrained infrastructure to only physical structures for too long — but infrastructure is also about systems and support. Technology is the way forward,” he said at a press briefing held to launch the Ghana Hotels Association’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

“I see innovation and technology as one of the things that we can use to support. If you talk about data collection, customer service, quality measures — how do we come in at GTDC to help you collect customer satisfaction data, for example, so that you could see where you are performing and how you can upgrade? ” he quizzed.

Professor Mensah said his outfit is focused on rolling out a strategic digital platform — the Ghana Tourism Marketplace — designed to connect local industry players directly with global audiences and reduce dependency on foreign Online Travel Agencies (OTAs).

According to him, international OTAs have long dominated Ghana’s tourism earnings, often holding back payments to local businesses for weeks.

“We have sat here and allowed OTAs abroad to take our money for far too long. It is not going to happen again, not when I am at GTDC,” he said.

He assured stakeholders that the Ghana Tourism Marketplace platform will be built and supported at no cost to operators.

“You are not going to pay a dime, no registration fee, no whatever fee. We are going to support it with amazing innovation and technology to make sure that when they type in ‘tourism in Africa, Ghana comes up immediately,” he said, emphasising the GTDC’s commitment to making the platform a globally competitive tool.

He also commended the contributions of young tech talents in Ghana and reaffirmed his belief in their potential to drive the digital transformation of the tourism sector.

He, therefore, called on industry stakeholders to embrace the new vision, stating: “We are building a very robust, strategically oriented tourism market and I can assure you of our full support. The GTDC team is made up of quite dynamic young people, and we will put all our support behind this industry to make it work,” he said.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo to face sanctions for revealing shirt with ‘I belong to Jesus’ inscription

Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo

Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo is at risk of being sanctioned by the English Football Association for displaying a vest with a religious message during his team’s 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on April 27, 2025.

The Netherlands international scored the third goal and, after the game, took off his shirt to reveal a vest that bore the message ‘I belong to Jesus.’

The player was booked for removing his jersey, as it breaches a rule.

According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) laws of the game which the FA follows, the player could face sanction.

“Equipment must not have any political, religious, or personal slogans, statements, or images.Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements, or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo. For any offense, the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organizer, national football association, or FIFA,” the rule read.

Having flouted the regulations, the English FA will decide whether to remind the player about the rule and warn him or sanction him.

Some concerned football fans have questioned the regulation, as captains had been wearing rainbow armbands in previous rounds of Premier League matches as part of the Rainbow Laces campaign, which offers support to the LGBTQ+ community in football and beyond.

Pressure mounts to probe Kenya police and army after BBC exposé

0

More than 100,000 people took to the streets of the capital, Nairobi, on 25 June 2024 calling on MPs More than 100,000 people took to the streets of the capital, Nairobi, on 25 June 2024 calling on MPs

Leading human rights organisations have renewed calls for investigations into the killing of protesters by Kenya’s security forces during demonstrations against a rise in taxes last June.

It follows a BBC Africa Eye investigation, exposing members of the security forces who shot dead three protesters at Kenya’s parliament, igniting public outrage and demands for justice.

Amnesty International and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) said the officers identified in the documentary should “face the law”.

Kenya’s government spokesman has responded by saying “every life is important”, the police watchdog is conducting an investigation and criticised the BBC documentary for being “one-sided”.

“Those who did the documentary should have sought government opinion… so that they can be fair and balanced,” Isaac Mwaura said.

“For example, they show the parliament being burnt, but they don’t show who is doing it; they seem to minimise the vandalisation that happened in parliament.”

He admitted the protesters had legitimate concerns about the finance bill but said: “We cannot have a country that also is led through anarchy and mayhem.”

The BBC had asked the government to take part in the documentary.

It was briefly discussed in Kenya’s parliament on Tuesday when MP John Kiarie accused the BBC of “pushing a foreign agenda”, while another MP, Millie Odhiambo, said the government and parliament should deal with the aftermath of the protests “soberly”, without gagging the media.

“The BBC documentary has created more anger among young people… You can’t stop the media,” Odhiambo said.

In response to the documentary before it was aired, the police service said the force could not investigate itself, adding that Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was responsible for investigating alleged misconduct.

The Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) told the BBC the IPOA had not forwarded any request to look into any of its personnel involved in the operations at parliament.

BBC Africa Eye’s Blood Parliament documentary revealed how security forces brutally responded to youthful protesters who breached Kenya’s parliament on 25 June 2024, the day lawmakers voted to approve the proposed tax hikes.

The controversial finance bill was aimed at raising $2.7bn (£2bn) the government said it needed to cut its reliance on external borrowing – but had sparked widespread protests.

Using open-source data and user-generated content, the BBC’s analysis of more than 5,000 images identified uniformed security personnel – a policeman and solider – who opened fire killing three unarmed protesters at parliament.

The wider clampdown by the security forces on a series of protests against the finance bill left at least 65 people dead, resulted in the forcible disappearance of 89 others and the arrest of thousands, according to Amnesty International.

The Kenyan government put the death toll at 42.

On Monday, the BBC said it had cancelled a private screening of the documentary in Kenya’s capital Nairobi “due to pressure from the authorities”.

“We are very disappointed not to have been able to share the documentary and panel discussion as planned,” a BBC spokesperson said.

“In the meantime, audiences can watch the film on BBC Africa’s YouTube channel,” the spokesperson added.

Amnesty said the documentary corroborated the group’s earlier report that “unnecessary and excessive lethal force was used against protesters”.

It called on the police and the army to “publicly state the actions being taken with regard to the findings of the BBC exposé”.

The rights group urged Kenyans to sign a petition calling for a public inquiry into the killings during what were dubbed the #OccupyParliament protests.

The KHRC said the BBC documentary revealed how “organised criminals in police and military uniforms” were deployed “to murder innocent Kenyans”.

It said the “responsibility rests with [President William] Ruto, who must be held accountable for these deaths”.

Kenyans expressed their anger online, pressing the government to hold security officers accountable for the killings and injuries of peaceful protesters.

Ruto has previously defended police against accusations of brutality and recently warned Kenyans against commenting on military matters.

Police have also repeatedly denied involvement in the abductions and killings. No officers have been charged.

On Monday, following the release of the BBC Africa Eye documentary, the IPOA gave an update on the investigations.

The authority revealed that so far, of the 60 deaths under investigation, 41 involved gunshot wounds.

The IPOA said it had completed 22 investigations, while it was actively pursuing 36, and that two cases were currently before the courts.

The investigating agency said it had recorded 233 injury cases during the demonstrations.

In a statement, the main opposition coalition said the “execution of peaceful protesters was premeditated and sanctioned at the highest levels”.

Mr Mwaura said the documentary risked “inciting Kenyans to violence” while one legislator called for the BBC to be banned in Kenya.

George Peter Kaluma, said that the 37-minute-long documentary risked “destabilising” the country.

But a senator, Edwin Sifuna, defended the documentary saying there were no “fabrications” in it.

“We must encourage these stories to be told from all angles for the sake of truth and justice. Those who are uncomfortable with this are wrestling with their own consciences and we cannot help them with that,” Sifuna posted on X.

Our Votes Increased In My Home Region – Bawumia

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that in the last general election, it was only in the North East Region that the party’s votes increased.

He said, “The number of votes the party had in 15 out of the 16 regions of Ghana declined in the 2024 elections as compared to what the party had in those regions in the 2020 general election.

“It was only in the North East Region that the party was able to increase its votes, and that is my home region.”

Addressing NPP supporters in Takoradi as part of his nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’, Dr. Bawumia noted that the number of votes President John Mahama had in 2024, was not all that different from what he got in 2020.

Dr. Bawumia stated that in the Greater Accra Region for instance, 529,000 people declined to vote. “In the Ashanti Region they were 430,000; Eastern, 258,000; Central, 251,000; Western, 164,000 and Bono Region, 100,000,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia urged party members to unite as they set their sights on winning the 2028 general election, saying unity is the key to strengthening the party and regaining power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Bawumia, who was joined by his former competitor in the NPP flagbearer race, Ken Agyapong, stressed that it was important for the party to unite, adding, “If we are united, we are going to win 2028.”

He explained that from the time of the late Prof. Adu Boahen to former President Akufo-Addo, all the party’s presidential candidates had gone ahead with a ‘Thank You Tour’ irrespective of the outcome of general elections.

“We are doing it differently this time because I want unity,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia assured the supporters that the party has taken important lessons from the last elections and was determined to make the necessary corrections.

He also expressed deep appreciation to the party’s polling station executives and grassroots supporters, describing them as the NPP’s greatest assets.

Stop the threats and go to court – Thaddeus Sory tells GBA

0

Renowned legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory has advised the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to seek legal redress if it believes the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama is unconstitutional.

His comments follow a statement by the GBA, through its Public Relations Officer, Saviour Kudze, expressing concern over the President’s use of discretionary power under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution to suspend the Chief Justice.

The association argued that such discretion must be governed by legal instruments to ensure accountability and prevent abuse.

“Subject to exercise discretion under article 296, they ought to have been made regulations like a constitutional instrument before exercising such discretion because the essence is to govern, how it is exercised so that it doesn’t get abused,” Kudze explained.

In response, Thaddeus Sory, in a legal opinion shared on Facebook titled Revoke and Suspend the Bar, urged the GBA to stop public commentary and instead pursue legal action.

“There is no need for threats or rhetorical outrage. If the Bar believes it has a case, let it go to court,” he stated.

He also questioned the effectiveness of the GBA’s past legal efforts, saying: “But history is not on their side. Past attempts have yielded embarrassing defeats. Even outside of constitutional litigation, our respected colleague Ward Brew has repeatedly prevailed in court against the Bar. The law is not the sole preserve of the Bar’s interpretation,” he stated.

Below is the full Facebook post by Thaddeus Sory.

REVOKE AND SUSPEND THE BAR

1. This will be brief and direct. Perhaps it’s no surprise that it took two clear days for the Ghana Bar Association’s resolution to finally see the light of day.

2. It was only this afternoon, 29th April 2025, that a signed copy of the Bar’s resolution—passed on Saturday, 26th April—surfaced publicly.

3. Among other things, the Ghana Bar Association (the Bar) resolved that:
i. The Acting Chief Justice should withdraw his directive “on the assignment of cases”; and
ii. The President should revoke the “suspension of the Chief Justice.”

4. According to the Bar, the Acting Chief Justice’s directive is “uncertain,” and the President’s suspension of the Chief Justice is “unconstitutional.” Their reasoning is that the President, who is neither a judge nor a judicial officer, exercised discretion “in the absence of a published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument or Regulation(s)” as required under Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution.

5. These demands are not only legally flawed and disrespectful, but they also expose a troubling inconsistency in the Bar’s reasoning. Just days ago, the Bar issued a statement that now seems at odds with its own resolution.

6. By law and longstanding practice, the power to assign cases is an administrative function of the Chief Justice. This function pertains to the office of the Chief Justice—not the individual currently holding the title.

7. Therefore, anyone constitutionally recognized as the Chief Justice, including one serving in an acting capacity, is empowered by law and practice to assign cases. The suspended Chief Justice exercised that function while in office. Now, the Acting Chief Justice must do the same.

8. The Bar’s position implies that the powers of the office are personal to the suspended Chief Justice. But when she was in office, the Bar raised no objections as she reassigned judges and altered case allocations. Did they then suggest she rely on an algorithm or random generator to assign cases? Were her removals and replacements of judges questioned?

9. Where was the Bar when the suspended Chief Justice issued unconstitutional and unlawful administrative guidelines and practice directions—actions that not only violated legal norms but also resulted in financial loss to the Republic through ill-conceived launches?

10. And if the Bar claims ignorance, I wrote publicly on those very matters.

11. Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution clearly states: “… the President may, acting in accordance with the advice of the Council of State, suspend the Chief Justice.”

12. This means that unless there is advice from the Council of State, the President cannot suspend the Chief Justice. The word “may” here does not grant discretion to act unilaterally. Once advised by the Council of State, the President is constitutionally bound to act- he must suspend.

13. There is no need for threats or rhetorical outrage. If the Bar believes it has a case, let it go to court. But history is not on their side. Past attempts have yielded embarrassing defeats. Even outside of constitutional litigation, our respected colleague Ward Brew has repeatedly prevailed in court against the Bar. The law is not the sole preserve of the Bar’s interpretation.

The law is not in bosom of the Bar!!!

Fitch Solutions maintains Ghana’s GDP growth forecast of 4.2% for 2025

0

Fitch Solutions has maintained its forecast of 4.2% Gross Domestic Product growth for Ghana in 2025.

This is slightly above the International Monetary Fund projection of 4% and the World Bank’s forecast of 3.9%.

According to the UK-based firm, record-high gold prices will largely insulate the Ghanaian economy from a tariff-induced global slowdown, as it will improve fiscal intakes, boost export earnings, and maintain exchange rate stability.

It pointed out that Ghana remains relatively shielded from the adverse effects of rising trade protectionism in the US, as its two main export commodities—gold and oil—are exempted from President Trump’s tariffs.

Furthermore, the US makes up only 4.0–5.0% of Ghana’s total exports, with mainland China and Europe—particularly Switzerland and the Netherlands—serving as more significant trading partners.

“While we note that Ghana is exposed to the broader effects of a global economic slowdown stemming from US-China trade tensions, we believe the impact will be offset by the rise in global gold prices, which will boost Ghana’s export earnings, bolster its international reserves, and allow the central bank to keep the currency stable”, it added.

Prince David Osei Slams Govt Over Dumsor

0

Prince David Osei

Actor Prince David Osei has voiced his frustration over the country’s ongoing power crisis, questioning how the government’s proposed 24-hour economy can function without reliable electricity.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the actor criticised the frequent power outages — locally known as dumsor — especially in parts of Accra, stating that the situation continues to disrupt businesses and daily life for many Ghanaians.

“How can a country achieve a 24-hour economy when basic utilities like electricity can’t even be provided for 10 hours? It seems like a distant dream. #stopdumsornow,” he wrote on April 29, 2025.

His comment comes amid fresh public pressure on the government to address the erratic power supply that has plagued the country for years.

While many users agreed with his sentiments, others called out the actor’s perceived inconsistency. Critics recalled his vocal stance during the #DumsorMustStop protests under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, contrasting it with what they describe as his relative silence during the current New Patriotic Party (NPP)-led government’s handling of the issue.

As Ghana eyes a more industrialized and 24/7 economy, Prince David Osei’s statement has reignited debate about whether the country’s basic infrastructure can support such ambitions without a stable power supply.

In a post she shared on her Instastories on Tuesday, April 29, Dr Bea expressed dissatisfaction at the volume of Angela Okorie’s bum. While reacting to a viral video of Angela running with her jiggling BBL butt, Dr Bea argued that when it comes to aesthetics, less is more. She also questioned why an actress should have a massive butt lift. According to her, what actresses are to sell to their audience is their craft, not their sex appeal. Read here.

Toyin has now waded into the conversation, stating that no disrespect to Angela will be tolerated. The mum of three wondered why Dre Bea, who had her face surgically enhanced, would question another person’s choice.

GBA’s demand untenable under law – Srem-Sai

0

Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has accused the Ghana Bar Association of attempting to circumvent the constitution.

The Ghana Bar Association at its 2025 Mid-Year conference in Accra issued a communiqué and demanded that President John Dramani Mahama revoke the suspension of the Chief Justice due to its unconstitutionality, under Article 146 (10)

Saviour Kudze, the PRO of the association in a further interview in Eyewitness News on April 29 stated that their demand is to ensure that the exercising of discretionary powers in such cases is not abused.

“There ought to have been regulations in the nature of a constitutional instrument or executive instrument before exercising such discretion because the essence is to govern how it is exercised so that it doesn’t get abused. So, we are saying that in the absence of such regulation, we are of the view that the president has not done well,” he stated.

But Speaking on TV3, on Tuesday, April 29, Justice Srem-Sai stated that calls by the GBA are untenable.

“If a group of lawyers meet at an event and decide that the best call they can make is that the president unmakes that which the constitution says should be private, be made public, what does that tell you? It tells you that it is a group who are trying to subvert the constitution.

“Do they need to go to law school to understand that when the constitution says something should be private, and a series of court decisions confirm that the process, including the petition, the conversation, and everything about it should be private?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress, Edudzi Tamakloe, insists that the President acted within the law and did not err in suspending the  Chief Justice.

“A prima facie determination is derived from the validity of the petition, and that duty, the terms of the constitution prevail on the chief justice, has been performed. There is nothing in the constitution that prevents the Council of State from performing that constitutionally imposed duty once the president has referred the petition to them. Any attempt to stop that process will be subverting the constitution,” he said.

Bright Steps International School inaugurates new campus in Accra

0

Bright Steps International School (BSI) has inaugurated its new campus in Accra to reinforce efforts towards inclusive and transformative education in Ghana.

The school will be a hub of innovation and a space where children with autism, developmental delays, and unique learning profiles are accepted and celebrated.

Addressing the gathering last Friday, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ms Grace A. Nkrumah, said that, “Bright Steps was born from a simple but powerful dream, to create a nurturing, inclusive space where every child, whether neurotypical or neurodiverse, can grow, learn, and thrive.”

She said the school was established to provide a nurturing environment for both neurotypical and neurodiverse children. A place where all children whether they have typical brain development or different kinds of brain development, such as autism, can learn and grow

Ms Nkrumah also expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders who had supported the school’s vision and growth. She attributed the school’s success to its dedicated staff and the support of families, pledging to maintain high standards of care and inclusive education.

The Inspector General of Schools under the National Schools Inspectorate Authority, Prof. Azeko Tahiru Salifu, who represented the Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, lauded the school for embodying the values of innovation, diversity, and inclusivity which is the essence of Ghana’s educational aspirations.

Also, the school’s curriculum integrated the Cambridge curriculum with early Montessori learning and early intervention for learners with autism and gifted intervention programs.

The government, through the Education Ministry, reaffirmed its support for BSI contributing meaningfully to national educational goals.

Dr Timothy King Avordeh, Head of Education for the Office of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina also commended the school for its focus on child development and establishing a strong foundation for young learners.

“Parents should consider themselves privileged to have their children begin from a place like this,” he said, stressing the importance of commitment from staff and unity of purpose in executing the school’s mission.

Dr Timothy urged the founder to uphold a culture of respect and appreciation for the staff, highlighting that their dedication would be vital to the school’s sustainability.

NDC lied about my alleged weapons supply for votes – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 Election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed how the National Democratic Congress (NDC) peddled a false and malicious claim against him for electoral gain ahead of the December 7, 2024 general elections.

According to him, the then-opposition party spread lies, accusing him of supplying weapons to one faction involved in the Bawku conflict.

Addressing party supporters in the Ashanti Region during the NPP’s “Thank You” tour on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Dr. Bawumia vehemently denied any involvement in the Bawku conflict, describing the allegation as a baseless fabrication by the NDC aimed at influencing votes.

“You all heard about the Bawku problem — the conflict between the Kusasis and the Mamprusis. The then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) took the opportunity to tell a wicked lie against me, wrongfully accusing me of supplying weapons to the Mamprusis to kill Kusasis. You all heard that.

“It was a wicked lie the NDC peddled about me. We didn’t know how it was going to impact the votes. But at the end of the election, when you look at the Kusasi areas in Bawku — all six constituencies — our votes reduced by 39,000. That’s out of the 2.1 million party supporters who did not vote. The reason the number isn’t huge is that the majority of people in the area already voted for the NDC.”

He added: “But as I stand here today and speak to you, everyone in Bawku has come to realise that the NDC lied to them about the Bawku conflict. Today, the people of Bawku have found out the truth. As we speak, NDC MPs are not able to go to Bawku.”

Meanwhile, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, resumed the Otumfuo Mediation Process, a significant initiative aimed at resolving the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

The mediation process is taking place at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The initiative comes at a time when tensions in Bawku remain high due to ongoing violence and the protracted chieftaincy dispute.

My fiancé tested HIV positive after returning from a year-long trip for our wedding

0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

It was early Sunday morning and I was busy preparing food in the kitchen. Not any regular food but a special one because my fiancé is returning from a year trip. We were actually preparing for our wedding so he coming back also means our wedding will be on.

I was the happiest girl, I missed my fiancé so much. After serving the food and everything, I heard a knock and it was him. I hugged him so tightly, I was so happy to the extent that I failed to notice he wasn’t smiling or happy.

I took him to the dining hall where his favourite food was served. I thought his facial expression means tiredness and hunger. He told he doesn’t need a spoon so I should bring him water so he would wash his hand. I asked him why he would want to use his hands to eat fried rice or if there’s something wrong with the spoon. He said he’s too hungry to waste his time with spoon.

It soon got to a night time and I couldn’t wait to get intimate with my fiancé. It’s been so long and my body craved for him. He was fast asleep, I started touching him, his weak point but this time he didn’t react. I persisted and he woke up, sat on the bed and asked me to stop. I was surprised but I adjusted my mood and asked him what was wrong. I asked him if he doesn’t miss me and he said he’s tired.

I told him he’s been acting different since he got home, then to my surprise, he asked me go to the hospital with him for HIV test. The shock on my face was so obvious and I couldn’t say a word to him.

My mood was off and I turned to sleep. The next day, I woke up early to prepare breakfast, just to see that my fiancé was all dressed up and he said I shouldn’t bother myself preparing breakfast because he wanted us to go to the hospital early.

I asked him if that was necessary and he said, he wanted to be sure if I stayed faithful to him in his absence. He then told me to pray I don’t test positive, and if it’s comes out positive, I shouldn’t think of following him to the house. I don’t feel guilty because my fiancé had been the only man in my life and I never cheated on him.

When we got to the hospital, he looked confident and for a moment, I thought this was a good thing. It can make us trust each other more. After conducting the test, the results were in and the doctor brought us two envelopes. The doctor opened mine first, told me I’m positive for ulcer and not HIV. I smiled and looked at my fiancé. The doctor then opened his result and said, “you have to take it easy, you are HIV positive”. As if his legs and the chair couldn’t hold him again, he sat on the floor.

I was in daze all this while, I was speechless and started crying. He started confessing to me that, he has been cheating on me when he travelled. He slept with multiple girls, he thought I was doing same and was afraid I would infect him. He continued to beg me not to leave him, if I do, he would kill himself.

I called his parents to inform them and they asked me to be calm. They said they will come over to resolve the issue but I told there’s nothing they could do because HIV is not curable.

My fiancé would have asked me to leave if I was in his position. I’ve decided to leave because I can’t risk my life for a love that do not cherish me and cheated on me right before our wedding.

I hope I made the right decision though, I don’t want to make a decision that would make me regret it one day. What do I do now?

Football fans, pundits blame Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to PSG on Partey’s absence

0

Black Stars attacker, Thomas Partey Black Stars attacker, Thomas Partey

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey dominated conversations in the UEFA Champions League following Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the Emirates Stadium on April 29, 2025.

The French side found the back of the net through Dembele in the 3rd minute, who nicely placed the ball on the edge of the post and beat goalkeeper David Raya.

The Gunners came back into the game strongly and created some decent chances, but couldn’t find the equaliser to restore parity.

After the game, Partey, who missed the game due to a suspension for two accumulated yellow cards, was at the centre of conversation, with many blaming him for the defeat.

Some notable football pundits, both locally and internationally, including Daniel Sturridge, stated that if Partey had played in the defensive midfield role, he would have given them more control and aggression to combat the PSG midfielders, Vitinha, Neves, and Fabian Ruiz.

Others indicated that Partey’s second yellow card, which he was shown against Real Madrid, was needless and negatively affected the Gunners, as Mikel Merino was not able to replicate the Black Stars player’s performance.

Others were elated about Arsenal’s loss, suggesting that the club and fans would appreciate Partey’s performances in the team and offer him a contract renewal.

In light of this, Partey will be back with the team for the second leg to boost their midfield solidity and aid their cause of staging a comeback at the Parc des Princes on May 7, 2025.

Husband of late Nigerian gospel singer sentenced to death

Osinachi Nwachuwku's death sparked outrage online and has drawn attention to concerns over domestic Osinachi Nwachuwku’s death sparked outrage online and has drawn attention to concerns over domestic

The widower of popular Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu has been sentenced to death by hanging in connection with her death three years ago.

The 42-year-old singer was initially said to have died of throat cancer, before her family went public with allegations of domestic violence.

They accused her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, of abusing the music artist, which ultimately led to her death. A judge convicted him of 23 charges, including culpable homicide, and gave him the maximum sentence for the crime.

It is unclear if Peter Nwachukwu, who denied the charges, will be executed, as the authorities rarely implement the death sentence. He has the right to appeal.

The case, held in the High Court in the capital, Abuja, has drawn much attention in Nigeria because of the musician’s prominence, and widespread concern about domestic violence.

The late singer, who is survived by four children, was featured on the 2017 hit gospel song Ekwueme, which has more than 136 million YouTube views.

Peter Nwachukwu, who was arrested in 2022, was also charged with emotional, verbal and psychological abuse, cruelty to children and criminal intimidation of them.

Seventeen people, including two of the couple’s children, were called by the prosecution as witnesses during the trial.

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme found the widower guilty of all the charges, saying the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

10 excavators seized in anti-galamsey crackdown – Regional Minister discloses

0

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Adjei Awatey, has announced the seizure of 10 excavators from illegal mining operators as part of renewed efforts to curb galamsey activities in the region.

Galamsey has long been a major environmental challenge in Ghana, with devastating effects including the pollution of major rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra, and Offin. The activity also contributes to deforestation, destruction of arable land, and poses serious health and safety risks to local communities.

Despite multiple government-led crackdowns over the years — including initiatives like Operation Vanguard and Galamstop — illegal mining remains persistent, fueled by economic hardship, weak enforcement, political interference, and high global gold prices.

Speaking to journalists in the region on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the minister said the action was part of a targeted operation to tackle the growing threat of illegal small-scale gold mining, known locally as galamsey.

Minister Awatey emphasised that the fight against galamsey must continue with urgency and resolve to protect the region’s environment and safeguard future development.

“We know that these things cannot be achieved without our work against illegal mining and other distractions from the company’s activity. We are embarking on our small operations and have seized about 10 excavators,” she stated.

Osinachi’s Husband Sentenced To Death

0

Peter Nwachukwu

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging for her murder.

Osinachi, known for her powerful gospel hit “Ekwueme,” died on April 8, 2022. Many fans were heartbroken when it was revealed that she may have suffered years of domestic abuse before her death.

Peter Nwachukwu was found guilty of causing her death after a long trial where 17 witnesses, including two of their children, testified.

The court also reviewed 25 documents that supported the case against him.

The judge ruled that the evidence showed he was responsible and sentenced him not only to death but also to several other prison terms and fines on different charges, including abuse and cruelty.

Osinachi’s voice touched millions, and her death sparked a national outcry against domestic violence. Now, many hope this verdict brings some justice and peace to her memory.

GNFS shuts down illegal food joint at Fuel Station in Osu over safety risks

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has ordered the immediate closure of a mobile mini restaurant operating with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the Total Filling Station on Oxford Street in Osu, Accra.

The decision follows the circulation of a viral video on social media, which showed the food vendor using open flames dangerously close to fuel pumps—a serious breach of fire safety regulations and an imminent fire hazard.

Fuel stations, according to the GNFS, are classified as high-risk zones due to the storage of highly flammable substances, and activities involving open flames, LPG, or any spark-generating equipment in such environments are strictly prohibited and punishable by law.

DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong, acting Chief Fire Officer, has since directed intensified inspections at fuel and gas stations nationwide.

She warned that individuals or businesses found violating safety protocols will face strict legal consequences.

“The GNFS remains committed to working collaboratively with fuel and gas station operators to ensure full compliance with safety standards,” part of the statement noted.

Former NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong Former NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has officially withdrawn from the ongoing ‘Thank You Tour’ of the party.

His withdrawal from the tour comes after one of his supporters was stabbed during an altercation.

Speaking in an interview on UTV on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Ken Agyapong said that his decision to withdraw from the tour is for the sake of unity.

He added that he was also withdrawing because he feels that he cannot protect his supporters.

“NPP lost the last election… I decided to join Dr Bawumia when he invited the other contestants for the tour for the sake of unity. But with everything happening, I feel that if I withdraw, it will help Dr Bawumia because of the tension.

“… I feel that I’m not able to protect my supporters because some people have made up their mind that only one candidate should be present. And so if you go somewhere and someone is in your T-shirt, he or she becomes a target,” Ken Agyapong, who is a former Member of Parliament for Assin North, said in Twi.

He added, “This does not bring unity. So, for the sake of unity, I’m withdrawing to take care of the guy who was stabbed.”

The former legislator bemoaned happenings in the Thank You Tour, saying, “We are taking politics too low. Now, it is not the guys I’m walking with that are being attacked but students just because of GH¢1000 given to them.”

GBA directive to Mahama on CJ suspension partisan, not legal – Suhuyini

0

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Hamza Suhuyini, has slammed the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for calling on President John Dramani Mahama to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the request as politically driven and devoid of any legal merit.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, April 30, Suhuyini questioned the neutrality of the GBA, following its April 26 statement, which described the President’s action as unconstitutional and without basis under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

“I am convinced that the President will not glorify the Ghana Bar Association with any response. In less than 24 hours, the GBA has gone under the guard of resolution to more or less betray the caution they exercised in their earlier statement.

“The only explanation behind such a U-turn is partisan. It is not the law. The only reason behind a quick U-turn by the Ghana Bar Association is politics,” Suhuyini said.

He further defended the President’s actions, insisting that the suspension of the Chief Justice was grounded in constitutional procedures.

“His Excellency the President has acted in line with the constitutional dictate of Article 146. Whatever decision he has taken, ranging from receiving the petition, forwarding the same to the Council of State and the suspended Chief Justice, and the eventual discovery of the prima facie case are prescribed under the 1992 Constitution,” he explained.

The Ghana Bar Association had earlier called on the President to revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo, arguing that the move lacked a legal foundation under Article 146(10) of the Constitution.

According to the Association, the suspension was carried out without any published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument, or regulation governing the exercise of that presidential discretion, in violation of Article 296 of the Constitution.

There is massive potential to improve the African game – Kurt Okraku

0

The Second Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Kurt Okraku, believes the potential of growing the sport on the continent is ‘limitless.’

Football on the continent is heading towards a positive trajectory with the recent performances of teams in Africa and global competitions, including Morocco’s recent performance at the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was one that also received great reviews from people on the continent and away from the continent, with many praising CAF for putting together ‘one of the best’ tournaments in recent times. ‘

According to Okraku, there is even potential for more, and that is what he and the newly elected CAF Executives would be looking to do.

“I think the potential is massive. There has been a complete reorganisation of our international competitions (AFCON especially), increased investments by CAF and an enhanced club licensing regime by CAF,” he told Asempa FM.

“I think the potential to grow the African game is limitless. That’s why we need to support Dr. Motsepe to finish what he has started.”

Kurt has now joined Faouzi Lekjaa, who will serve as the First Vice President, replacing Senegal FA President Augustine Senghor, while Kurt Okraku takes over from Ahmed Yahya.

His elevation was confirmed on Saturday, April 26, 2025, by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe during a press conference in Accra.

Jojo Bossman addresses juju claims in Hearts vs Kotoko rivalry; accuses Kotoko to come out if they have never used Juju

0

Former Hearts of Oak player Jojo Bossman has pushed back against long-standing allegations of juju in the fierce rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, stating that such claims are often exaggerated and unfounded.

In an interview with Ghana Sports Page, Bossman addressed perceptions surrounding spiritual practices in the build-up to the historic Super Clash, clarifying that Hearts of Oak’s preparations were rooted in faith not superstition.

“Most of the time it’s Kotoko who accuse Hearts of Oak of juju. But I want to ask—do Kotoko only go to God ahead of games? Do they go to church from Monday to Tuesday?” Bossman asked rhetorically. He told Ghanasportspage.com

He went on to defend Hearts’ spiritual approach, revealing that the team sought divine guidance through prayer rather than any form of traditional rituals.

“If we are about to play Kotoko, we go to church for one week. Ask Charles Taylor—did Hearts ever take him to see any mallam? He played for Hearts of Oak,” he said.

Bossman further disclosed that the team would often visit Accra New Town, not for rituals, but to gather under the iconic Oak tree for prayer sessions led by pastors.

“The only place we used to go ahead of Kotoko games is Accra New Town, where the Oak tree is. We go there for pastors to pray with us,” he added.

His comments come amid renewed discussions around the role of superstition and faith in Ghanaian football, especially in the buildup to high-stakes Heart of Oak-Kotoko clash.

How stan culture is shaping and shaking the Ghanaian music industry

0

Across the globe and certainly in Ghana fans have moved beyond just listening to music.

They are now active, powerful players in shaping careers, industries, and even the personal lives of their favorite musicians.

But what happens when unwavering support turns into unbridled obsession?

And what happens when that once-devoted fan flips the script, as we’ve recently seen with Aisha Modi and Stonebwoy?

This article takes a look at the rise of stan culture in Ghana’s music industry, the opportunities it has created, the dangers it poses, and how incidents like Aisha Modi’s fallout with Stonebwoy spotlight the complex emotional world of fandom today.

The rise of fanatism or stan culture in Ghana

Stan culture, a term derived from the Eminem song “Stan” refers to intense, often obsessive support for a celebrity or artiste.

In Ghana, this phenomenon is impossible to ignore. Sark Nation (fans of Sarkodie), Shatta Movement (fans of Shatta Wale), BHIM Nation (fans of Stonebwoy), Shay Gang (fans of Wendy Shay), and M.anifans (fans of M.anifest) and a host of others are some prominent fanbases that have risen to national prominence in Ghana.

These fan armies are not cheering from the sidelines, rather with the power of social media at the fingertips of these fan armies, they are driving sales, boost streaming numbers, and can even influence award outcomes.

In today’s industry, having a loyal, loud, and digital-savvy fanbase can make or break an artiste’s career.

The positive impact of stan culture

Stan culture has transformed fans from passive listeners into active participants in the creative process.

Through platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, fans directly interact with their idols, offer real-time feedback, and even pressure artistes to release new music.

It has become common now to see fans take to social media demanding that artistes drop new projects.

In Ghana, this dynamic is especially visible. For instance, fans from Sark Nation frequently urge Sarkodie to release new projects, while BHIM Nation members are not shy about telling Stonebwoy exactly when and how they want new music.

This constant feedback loop keeps artistes engaged with their audience and ensures that the music produced is highly anticipated.

Moreover, fan-driven promotion often exposes lesser-known songs to wider audiences, helping to break barriers traditional media outlets might have ignored.

Another positive outcome is that stan culture has widened music discovery.

Fans regularly share playlists, promote artistes’ collaborations, and introduce their followers to new sounds creating a more interconnected and musically diverse audience.

The negative impact of stan culture

However, not everything about stan culture is positive.

Recent scientific research highlights that intense fandom can have serious psychological effects, both for the fans and the artistes.

Studies show that it can encourage parasocial relationships (where fans feel they have a personal relationship with a celebrity who doesn’t even know they exist), distort self-esteem, amplify confirmation bias, fuel online harassment, and, perhaps most concerningly, cause emotional instability and loss of perspective.

Take the constant social media warfare between BHIM Nation, Shatta Movement, and Sark Nation.

Whenever one artiste achieves a major milestone, fans from rival camps waste no time trying to downplay it.

When Shatta Wale was billed to perform alongside Vybz Kartel in Jamaica, BHIM Nation fans were quick to label him a mere “curtain raiser” for the event, a claim that was not reflective of the true billing.

Similarly, when Stonebwoy is booked for an international concert, Shatta Movement fans retort by branding him as an artiste who plays shows for free.

Such toxic rivalries often overshadow the achievements of the artistes themselves and foster unnecessary hostility within the industry.

The Aisha Modi Example: When loyalty turns sour

One of the most glaring recent examples of stan culture turning sour is the falling out between Aisha Modi and Stonebwoy.

Aisha Modi was once seen as one of Stonebwoy’s most dedicated supporters, a ride-or-die member of BHIM Nation.

She publicly defended him, fought online battles on Stonebwoy’s behalf, and championed his music and brand.

However, today, the story is different. Aisha has turned into one of Stonebwoy’s fiercest critics, taking to social media to hurl accusations, air grievances, and even question his character.

Her public outbursts in recent days have included printable and unprintable words, alleging everything from jealousy to ingratitude.

This dramatic shift highlights one major flaw of stan culture: the personal sense of ownership fans sometimes feel over artistes.

When the artiste doesn’t meet their expectations, whether personal or professional, the backlash can be intense, public, and deeply damaging.

How stan culture is reshaping the music industry

Stan culture has also contributed to the homogenization of the industry.

With so much focus on pushing a few favourite artistes to win awards and dominate charts, there’s less room for new, experimental talents to break through. Diversity, innovation, and creative risk-taking suffer when the same handful of artistes receive the lion’s share of attention and support.

Moreover, some stans go to unethical lengths to protect their idols’ legacies, engaging in online bullying, cyberattacks, and even manipulating voting processes for awards.

This toxic behavior doesn’t just harm individual artistes, it damages the credibility and reputation of the entire music industry.

Another worrying trend is the deification of artistes. Some fans see their idols as flawless and beyond criticism.

This blind loyalty discourages healthy, constructive feedback and allows artistes to escape accountability when they misstep which is a dangerous precedent for any industry.

Conclusion: Navigating the future of fandom

There’s no doubt that stan culture has dramatically transformed Ghana’s music landscape.

It has given fans power, visibility, and a direct role in the careers of their favourite artistes.

However, the emotional extremes and toxic behaviours that sometimes come with it need addressing.

Artistes must learn how to manage their fanbases responsibly, and fans must be reminded that their idols are human capable of mistakes, growth, and change.

Elegant Kente Styles for Various Occasions

0

Kente, a traditional Ghanaian textile woven with vibrant colors and symbolic patterns, has transcended cultural borders to become a symbol of elegance and pride across Africa and the diaspora. It is often worn during special events and ceremonies, making it a go-to fabric for occasions that demand both tradition and style.

1. Weddings

Kente is a top choice for both brides and grooms during traditional weddings. Brides often opt for stylish mermaid gowns, corset tops with wrapped skirts, or off-shoulder dresses enhanced with lace, beads, or embroidery. Grooms complement their brides with custom-tailored agbada or kaftan outfits made from the same Kente pattern, often adorned with gold or velvet trimmings.

2. Graduation Ceremonies

Graduates proudly wear Kente stoles or sashes over their gowns as a mark of cultural identity and accomplishment. Some also go for custom-tailored Kente dresses or shirts for post-ceremony celebrations, capturing the importance of the day in vibrant style.

3. Church and Religious Events

For church services and special religious gatherings, modest but fashionable Kente styles such as peplum blouses with long skirts, high-neck gowns, and midi-length dresses are preferred. These styles blend grace with traditional appeal.

4. Funerals and Memorial Services

While Kente is known for its brightness, darker or muted tones like black, brown, or dark green variants are often used for somber events. Simple long gowns, wrapper styles, and tailored kaba and slit are popular choices.

5. Political or Cultural Events

Kente is often worn to showcase national pride during Independence Day, cultural festivals, or political rallies. Men and women alike opt for full-length traditional robes, wrap styles, or two-piece garments to represent heritage.

Nana B Gets 14 Days To Amend Mass Dismissals Case

0

Henry Nana Boakye

The Supreme Court has given the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), 14 days within which to amend his case challenging government’s decision to terminate all appointments and recruitments made into the public sector by the previous government after the December 7, 2024 election.

This was after the court granted a motion filed by his lawyers asking the court for leave to ament the writ of summons and the statement of case.

Th court, presided over by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and assisted by Justices Avril Lovelace Johnson, Amadu Tanko, Henry Anthony Kwofie, and Richard Adjei-Frimpong, granted the application and gave them 14 days within which to file the proposed amended writ of summons and statement of case attached to the application.

Nana B is before the Supreme Court seeking among others, a declaration that the directive from the Office of the President dated February 10, 2025 and signed by the Chief of Staff to Heads of Government Institutions to annul all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after December 7, 2024 is unconstitutional, as the Chief of Staff lacks the power to give such a directive.

The suit, which names the Attorney General as the defendant in the matters, also avers that any annulment by the Heads of Government Institutions pursuant to the February 10, 2025 directive from the Office of the President, is unconstitutional as same is in contravention of Article 191(b) of the 1992 Constitution.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on February 10, 2025, issued a directive revoking all appointments and recruitments made into the Public Service after December 7, 2024.

A letter issued by him requested all Heads of Government Institutions to take the necessary steps to annul any such appointments or recruitments and submit a comprehensive report on the actions taken to the Office by February 17, 2025.

The Minority NPP has raised several concerns about the revocation of the appointments and recruitments, urging government to reconsider the decision.

The suit filed by Henry Nana Boakye contends that should the court find that the Chief of Staff has the power to give the subject directive, it should declare that the directive from the Office of the President dated and signed by the Chief of Staff to Heads of Government Institutions to annul all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after December 7, 2024 is in contravention of Article 191 (b) of the 1992 Constitution, as same is without just cause and thus unconstitutional.

“A declaration that on a true and proper interpretation of Article 58(2) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the President of the Republic of Ghana is under an obligation to execute and maintain Article 191 (b) of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Services Commission Act, 1994 (Act 4).”

He further wants a declaration that President Mahama has breached Articles 58 (2) and 191(b) of the 1992 Constitution in view of the aforementioned directive.

Again, he wants “An Order in the nature of prohibitory injunction directed at the Heads of Government Institutions to refrain from annulling the appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after December 7, 2024.”
