Music to me is a kind of prophecy – Arathejay

Arathejay has shared that music is a kind of prophecy to him Arathejay has shared that music is a kind of prophecy to him

Ghanaian artiste Samuel Ofei Ankrah Badu, popularly known as Arathejay, has shared thoughts about what music means to him.

According to the “Jesus Christ” hitmaker, music goes beyond just telling a story to him but rather it is a form of prophecy.

In an interview with TurnTable Charts, Arathejay explained that he believes the words spoken in music have power and can influence what happens in real life.

“For me, music goes beyond storytelling because, to me, it’s a kind of prophecy. When you keep saying something to yourself, it is prone to come to pass,” Arathejay stated.

He also talked about how careful he is when writing his songs. According to him, music is about expressing what he believes in, and he always makes sure that his lyrics have a positive message.

“Music is about saying what I believe should be said. I’m very particular about my words and lyrics. Most of the time, people are prone to sing about what they feel, but I make sure it’s a positive output at the end of the day,” he shared.

Arathejay added that his music is meant to speak for people who may not have the chance to express themselves. He shared that while he sings about different topics, he ensures that there is a message of hope and positivity in his lyrics.

“Being able to speak for those who do not have the mouthpiece or avenue. My music isn’t always about people struggling or going through life because I touch other themes like love too, but positivity is always present,” he said.

Wontumi’s arrest and detention lawful; EOCO has done nothing wrong

0

Andy Appiah-Kubi is the lawyer of Chairman Wontumi Andy Appiah-Kubi is the lawyer of Chairman Wontumi

The lawyer of embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has refuted assertions that his client was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in a ‘rambo style’.

Speaking in an interview with Oyerepa TV/FM on Friday, May 30, 2025, lawyer Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi said a warrant was issued for Wontumi’s arrest by EOCO.

He indicated that if there is anything wrong with his client’s arrest, it is the law that establishes EOCO.

“Let me explain, the type of arrest they made was an arrest under warrant. So, there was an arrest warrant for Chairman Wontumi… So, if there is anything wrong, it should be the law itself and not the approach.

“The law states that EOCO, as an entity, has the same powers as the police — that is the EOCO Act. So, their work is just like that of the police and includes them arresting upon warrant,” he explained in the Twi dialect.

He added, “But the issue with the law is that the warrant should be granted by the court, not by EOCO itself. So, the default in the law is EOCO itself having the power to issue warrants. Because if the law were such that the court was supposed to issue the warrant to EOCO, the justification for issuing the warrant would be determined in the court, but with this (law), they can decide whether or not to arrest under warrant,” he said.

He also explained that because there was a warrant for Wontumi’s arrest, his continued detention by EOCO after 48 hours was not illegal.

“Because he was arrested under warrant, the 48-hour rule under the Criminal Procedure Code does not apply,” he said.

He added that the rule in the criminal code for a suspect to be released after 48 hours only applies to arrests without warrants.

Lawyer Appiah-Kubi said that his team is working to file proceedings in court to get Wontumi’s bail conditions reduced so they can meet them.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested and detained by EOCO after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

He was granted bail set at GH¢50 million with two sureties, both to be justified, after hours of interrogation.

Initial reports indicated that he was unable to meet the bail conditions, resulting in an extended stay in EOCO custody for an additional night.

However, Accra-based JoyNews reports that the politician has, on Thursday, May 29, 2025, managed to secure one surety, with only one remaining to fully satisfy the bail requirements.

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has disclosed that Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for multiple criminal offences.

These include fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering.

In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Justice Srem Sai revealed that Wontumi, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, is also implicated in a second strand of investigation linked to a broader international organised crime scheme.

The Deputy Attorney General emphasised that EOCO is collaborating closely with international law enforcement partners to probe this complex network of alleged criminal activities.

KIA's Terminal 2 to undergo repurposing KIA’s Terminal 2 to undergo repurposing

The Ministry of Transport, together with the management of Kotoka International Airport, has begun expansion work at Terminal 2.

This is intended to reduce congestion at Terminal 3 and enhance overall efficiency.

The expansion of Terminal 2 will accommodate both domestic and international flights, with operations rolled out in two distinct phases.

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, during a working visit to the airport, explained that the project aims to increase the airport’s capacity to better manage the growing volumes of passengers and cargo.

“If you visit Terminal 3 at rush hour, you will realize that there is congestion. So, we have divided Terminal 2 into two phases: one for domestic flights, and the area where we are currently standing will serve international flights.

“This way, we can transfer some of the load from Terminal 3 here, thereby decongesting Terminal 3 and providing more comfort and space for our travelers,” he was quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.

This move comes after Terminal 3 at KIA has experienced increasing congestion in recent years.

According to the ministry, the renovation of Terminal 2 is expected to significantly improve the passenger experience while enhancing the efficiency of services at the airport.

'Is it flexing or God's blessing?' – Abena Moet questions displays of wealth by pastors

Ghanaian media personality Abena Moet has expressed concerns about the display of wealth among religious leaders.

In a submission on Neat FM on May 30, 2025, she questioned whether such displays of wealth by these individuals are for showmanship or showcasing God’s blessings on their lives.

“Someone was asking me, are they doing this for the Lord or for fans? “There are blessings, but doesn’t mean you must flaunt it?” she asked.

Her comments were prompted by a video showing Pastor Eric Boahen welcoming Bishop Ernest Agortey ahead of their much-publicised Velocity Conference.

Their outfits, however, sparked reactions, as both were adorned in designer outfits, jewellery, and sneakers.

Abena Moet contrasted this with secular artists like Stonebwoy, suggesting that while such displays might be expected in the entertainment industry, they are strange when exhibited by religious figures.

“We can’t compare a man of God to an artiste. If Stonebwoy wears bling to welcome Spice at the airport, why must pastors do the same?” she asked.

She also questioned the need for heavy security around pastors who preach about divine protection.

“If a man of God is preaching that God will protect us, why does he need security men around him? Why the soldiers and private security surrounding them?” she inquired.

Heavy police deployment at EOCO headquarters [Video]

0

A significant security deployment has been stationed at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, as members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) protest the continued detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi.

The reason behind the heightened security presence remains unclear.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, briefly visited the EOCO office to assess the situation.

Adom News’ Ernest Akowuah, who is at the scene, reports that former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is expected to arrive by 3:00 p.m.

Wontumi has been in custody for over 48 hours after failing to meet the GH₵50 million bail condition, which the NPP has described as “insensitive and unreasonable.”

The Minority in Parliament, along with other NPP members, on Thursday stormed the EOCO premises to express their displeasure over the matter.

Cedi Gains May Be Temporary Without Reforms – APL

0

Policy Research and Analyst Organisation, Africa Policy Lens (APL), has warned that the appreciation of the cedi could be short-lived if not supported by deeper structural reforms.

The organisation indicated that while the cedi has appreciated significantly in the first half of 2025, this has largely been driven by temporary measures.

It mentioned heavy forex market interventions by the Bank of Ghana (nearly $1 billion between January and May 2025) and tough fiscal decisions such as freezing government spending and suspending payment of arrears as factors that have significantly contributed to these gains.

“These gains, while encouraging, are built on temporary pillars that require deeper reforms to become sustainable,” APL noted.

APL points out that Ghana has seen similar periods of stability before, particularly between 2017 and 2019 during the IMF Extended Credit Facility programme.

“There are lessons from the past—particularly the 2017–2019 period—that show sustainable stability must be anchored in strong fundamentals, not ad hoc measures,” the organisation stated in a press release issued on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

It further highlighted the potential risks if current strategies continue without adjustment while warning that the over-reliance on gold-backed interventions and deferred obligations could backfire, especially if commodity prices fall or external financing becomes more difficult.

“Over-reliance on short-term tools such as gold-backed forex support and deferred government obligations could leave the economy vulnerable to external shocks,” APL warned.

It indicated that analysts such as S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Solutions have already warned that the cedi could face renewed depreciation in the second half of 2025 if structural imbalances resurface.

“Global credit watchers are already flagging risks, and Ghana must act swiftly to insulate itself from renewed pressures,” APL emphasised.

APL thus called for stronger policy action, including the completion of debt restructuring, diversification of export revenue sources, and improved fiscal management.

It also emphasised the importance of transparent communication from government institutions to maintain investor confidence.

“To maintain the current momentum, reforms must be bold, and communication must be clear to avoid spooking markets,” it stated.

In conclusion, APL stated that while Ghana’s currency has shown impressive recovery, “the challenge now is to ensure these gains are not only preserved but built upon,” reiterating that “without long-term reforms, the current stability may not hold.”

Eco-Innovation in Ghana: Converting Plastics into Infrastructure

0

By Albert Oppong-Ansah

Accra, May 30, GNA – Plastic waste clogs gutters and litters streets, but an ambitious new initiative is transforming single-use plastic pollution into sustainable building materials.

Two local companies, Nelplast Ghana Limited and Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECoP), have partnered in a pioneering project to convert discarded plastic into durable bricks.

Under the Community-Based Sustainability Zero Plastic Waste Project (SCZWP), the initiative aims to recover 90 per cent of single-use plastic waste by 2030.

With funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the project seeks to reduce plastic pollution while addressing Ghana’s housing and infrastructure challenges.

The two-year initiative has been hailed as a model for circular economy innovation, aligning with national policies such as the National Planning Strategy.

Waste to Worth

Madam Betty Brown Nyadu, General Manager of IRECoP, said that her organisation would recover single-use plastics from mixed waste.

The company is setting up a network of over 200 waste collectors to retrieve sachet water wrappers, carrier bags, and film plastics, which are often non-recyclable and either burned or dumped in landfills.

“Single-use plastics are among the most problematic waste materials in Ghana,” said Nyadu.

“They’re lightweight, hard to recycle, and found everywhere. But this project gives them a second life, with real value.”

Collected plastics are cleaned, sorted, and compacted before being transported to a green construction start-up specialising in eco-friendly materials.

Plastics that Build

At Nelplast’s facility, plastics are shredded, melted, and mixed with sand to create weather-resistant building blocks.

These bricks are used for walkways, school buildings, and low-cost housing, according to Mr. Nelson Boateng, CEO of Nelplast Limited.

“The blocks are stronger than conventional cement bricks, water-resistant, and excellent for insulation,” explained Boateng.

“More importantly, they reduce construction costs by up to 30% while helping clean up our environment.”

He noted that one classroom block can be constructed using the equivalent of 13,000 plastic bags.

Creating Jobs, Empowering Communities

The GEF, through UNIDO’s natural sciences programme, is supporting the project with a $400,000 grant for equipment, training, and pilot construction projects in Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta regions.

UNIDO’s role includes technical support, environmental education campaigns, and partnerships with local governments and schools.

The project is already generating employment in waste-prone communities.

In James Town, 29-year-old Adwoa Mireku, a former street hawker, now earns a stable income as a plastics collector.

“I used to throw sachets away like everyone else. Now, I collect them and get paid. I never thought waste could build a future for me,” she said.

Both companies are collaborating with vocational schools to train youth in eco-construction methods and plan to partner with local governments to build community toilets and classrooms using plastic bricks.

Environmental Benefits

Without this recovery and value-addition model, tonnes of plastic waste would end up in landfills or be burned.

Dr Glenn K. Gyimah, Project Manager at Jospong Group, warned that plastic pollution significantly contributes to carbon emissions throughout its lifecycle, from production to disposal.

He explained that the high plastic waste generation in urban cities, coupled with low degradability, leads to excessive landfill use.

Burning plastics releases harmful compounds, including carbon dioxide, methane, and particulate matter, which cause respiratory diseases.

Dr Gyimah stated that Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), produced through open burning or poor incineration, are particularly prevalent where plastic waste is disposed of irresponsibly.

Soils surrounding dumpsites have tested high levels of dioxins beyond acceptable limits due to indiscriminate burning of plastics.

Prolonged exposure to dioxins can be carcinogenic to humans.

These pollutants pose serious health risks to unborn babies, infants, and children, who may be exposed through maternal contact or direct environmental exposure.

Ghana generates over 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, yet less than 10 per cent is recycled.

Looking Ahead

With rising concerns over climate change, flooding, and sanitation, this project offers a promising blueprint for plastic circularity and climate-smart infrastructure.

Environmental analysts commend its integrated approach, linking waste retrieval, job creation, and low-cost housing through local innovation and action.

As construction begins on the first demonstration block in a peri-urban school outside Accra, the hum of machines and the click of plastic bricks signal a new era of progress, where pollution is repurposed rather than removed.

Minority MPs resume parliamentary duties after protest over Wontumi’s GH₵50m bail

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament made a swift return to the House on Friday, 30 May 2025, following a brief boycott in protest of the bail conditions imposed on Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, 27 May, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and later granted bail set at GH₵50 million—an amount the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allies have condemned as excessive and politically motivated.

On Thursday, 29 May, Minority MPs walked out of Parliament in protest, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who described the bail terms as unfair. “We are not going to ask for any property. We don’t have GH₵50 million. Where is he going to get it from? They must do the right thing, and we will not be part of any proceeding until then,” he told Parliament before exiting the chamber.

He further pledged unwavering support for Wontumi, saying, “We will stand with him. If it means we have to spend nights with him, we will do so.”

However, in a notable turn of events, members of the Minority Caucus were present in the House the next day, actively participating in proceedings. While the reasons for the reversal were not officially stated, it hints at possible behind-the-scenes engagements or assurances that helped to calm tensions.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed on Thursday via his official Facebook account that Chairman Wontumi is being investigated for several serious offences. These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

“Suspect Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering,” the Deputy Attorney General stated, adding that EOCO is spearheading the probe and has commenced asset recovery efforts related to suspected proceeds of crime.

A fierce blaze has gutted two popular beach resorts—Maaha and Vision Beach Resorts—in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

The devastating inferno broke out at about 7pm on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 and destroyed the entire Vision Beach Resort and parts of Maaha Beach Resort.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that Vision Beach Resort was constructed primarily from wood, which may explain the extent of the damage.

The Ellembelle District Fire Commander, DO2 Mark Hamilton told DAILY GUIDE that the exact cause of the blaze was yet to be determined.

He, however, confirmed that the fire started at Vision Beach Resort and spread to the thatched roof of some rooms at Maaha Beach Resort.

“The fire started at Vision Resort and quickly spread to the thatched roof of some of the rooms of Maaha Beach Resort, which is adjacent Vision Resort,” he disclosed.

He said his outfit received a distress call about the fire outbreak at about 7:59pm, and his men quickly went there and managed to prevent the fire from spreading further at the Maaha Beach Resort.

“For Vision Beach Resort, we cannot tell immediately what caused the fire. But as for Maaha, we can say it was the fire from Vision Resort which spread to that place,” he added.

He disclosed that there were no casualties, and that the affected rooms had no occupants.

He pointed out that fire officers would conduct detailed assessment to determine the cause of the fire and to evaluate safety measures at the affected facilities.

Ensure due process in Wontumi’s case – Dormaahene

0

The Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Dr. Fredua Agyemang Badu II, has called for strict adherence to due process in the ongoing investigation involving the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for a range of serious criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, revealed in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is handling the case. He added that asset recovery efforts are underway to secure suspected proceeds of crime.

Speaking on the matter during President John Dramani Mahama’s “Thank You Tour” in the Bono Region on Friday, May 30, Osagyefo Dr. Agyemang Badu II stressed the need for fairness and impartiality in the application of the law.

“If somebody does anything wrong, apply the law and bring the person to book. Even me, Agyemang Badu — if you hear I have offended, bring me to book so that the right thing is done. But if no wrong has been done by an individual, then don’t touch that individual,” he stated.

While expressing admiration for Chairman Wontumi, the Dormaahene made it clear that no one should be above the law.

“Chairman Wontumi—I really like him, but even though I like him, I am not saying due process shouldn’t work. If I have done something wrong, the law allows me to be investigated,” he added.

Osagyefo Dr. Agyemang Badu II also took issue with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s recent protest at the EOCO headquarters, describing it as inappropriate.

“I’m not saying Ghanaians should not support him, but Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin going to EOCO and sitting on the floor—I wasn’t happy with it. He should let me know when he wants to go to such a place so I can send one of my people to follow him with a seat,” he said, injecting humour into the otherwise serious discussion.

The Dormaahene’s comments add to growing calls for transparency and fairness in the handling of high-profile investigations involving political figures.

Masked men allegedly disrupt LilWin’s ‘Ibrahim Traoré’ movie shoot in Kumasi

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker LilWin Ghanaian actor and filmmaker LilWin

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has narrated a serious disruption during the filming of his upcoming film, ‘The Last African Hero’, which is based on Burkina Faso’s current leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

According to LilWin, the incident occurred on May 29, 2025, while shooting was underway in Kumasi.

He said a group of masked men reportedly stormed the set, causing massive disturbances.

In a video shared on social media, the actor described the moment approximately ten masked individuals arrived on motorbikes, aggressively demanding that filming should stop immediately.

“There was a commotion this evening while we were on set shooting Ibrahim Traoré. About ten men on motorbikes came and told us to stop working. They threatened us, and when I refused to stop, they started scattering everything in the house,” he said.

LilWin further revealed that, prior to this, he had previously received social media threats warning him to halt production.

He also claimed someone had offered him a $20,000 bribe to abandon the project, an offer he declined.

He added that the incident prompted the landlord of the filming location to revoke permission for the crew to continue shooting on the property due to the damage caused.

“When I tried calling the regional minister, they fled. But they had already destroyed much of what we were using. Because of that, the property owner now refuses to let us continue filming there,” LilWin added.

But despite these setbacks, LilWin expressed determination to proceed with the project, saying, “None of them showed their faces during the attack, but thankfully no one was harmed. We will continue with the footage we already have, and even if it’s not perfect, we hope the audience will understand.”

Meanwhile, authorities have not yet issued an official statement, and it remains unclear whether an investigation has been launched into the incident.

‘You abandoned Wontumi to sleep at EOCO alone’ – Adongo jabs Minority MPs

0

Isaac Adongo is the Member of Parlaiment for Bolgatanga Central Isaac Adongo is the Member of Parlaiment for Bolgatanga Central

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has taken a swipe at the Minority Caucus for what he sees as the inconsistent behavior of its members.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the sitting on Friday, May 30, 2025, Isaac Adongo criticised the Minority Caucus for their dramatic U-turn in abandoning their protest at the EOCO head office over the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and resuming parliamentary business.

This came following an earlier announcement by the Minority to boycott parliamentary business if Chairman Wontumi, as he is popularly known, was not released from custody.

Adongo accused them of failing to show solidarity with Chairman Wontumi by abandoning him, despite their earlier promise to remain at EOCO until his release.

“I think Wontumi will be very very sad that you are here talking. He was expecting you to sleep at EOCO with him, but you abandoned him to sleep there. And today, you promised the people of Ghana that you will abandon this chamber, but you are here making a lot of arguments.

“You people should tell Wontumi his people are deceiving him and he’s sleeping there alone whiles they are here arguing for more holidays. That is what they made us believe. We were surprised when they were sitting on the ground there [EOCO] but when we went there at seven, they had disappeared,” he said attracting laughter from the chamber.

Parliament boycott

The Minority Caucus of the House staged a walkout in Parliament over the arrest and detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by EOCO on May, 29, 2025.

Before the walkout, the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, lambasted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for illegally detaining Chairman Wontumi, who he said is unwell.

He accused EOCO of deliberately setting an illegal bail of GH¢50 million to keep him in their custody.

He went on to demand that Wontumi be granted bail; adding that until he is released by EOCO, the Minority Caucus would be boycotting the proceedings of the House to join him at EOCO.

“If the state is minded, do your interrogation, grant him bail, self-recognisance to enable him come. Because the man is a chairman of a non-political party who is always available. If, as it were, Chairman Wontumi was granted bail and he abused the terms of the bail, then you can now demand justification.

“Mr. Speaker, I must argue one more time that EOCO cannot arrogate the power of demanding justification at the inquiry level. You are doing investigation. The matter is not before a court for trial. And then you make the bail condition so onerous,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin added, “It is clear that this is being used to punish him. And I expect my colleagues in this House to put aside your partisan colours.”

After his remarks, the 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, asserted that the right place to challenge the action of EOCO was the courts.

As Ahiafor was speaking, all the members of the Minority Caucus, led by Afenyo-Markin, started walking off the floor and exited the chamber.

Invest in Electrochem to advance Ghana’s industrialisation drive – Kofi Bentil to government

Daniel McKorley, founder of Electrochem Ghana Limited Daniel McKorley, founder of Electrochem Ghana Limited

The Senior Vice President of policy think tank Imani Africa, Kofi Bentil, has urged the Mahama-led government to invest in Electrochem Ghana Limited – a fully Ghanaian-owned salt production company founded by business mogul Daniel McKorley.

In a statement published on his website, Bentil underscored Electrochem’s significant contribution to Ghana’s GDP and its impact on job creation for the youth in Ada.

He commended Electrochem for its transformation of the Songhor Lagoon into a multi-million-dollar salt production hub – the largest of its kind in the Greater Accra Region.

“With an investment exceeding $88 million, the project currently produces 650,000 metric tonnes of salt annually, with plans to scale up to one million metric tonnes by 2024 and two million by 2027.

“Under the leadership of Mr. Daniel McKorley, Electrochem has not only rejuvenated the lagoon but has also generated over 3,000 jobs for the local community,” the statement noted.

Bentil has appealed to the government to invest in this wholly Ghanaian enterprise to accelerate industrialisation, optimise local resource utilisation, and expand employment opportunities for the youth.

After hearing numerous accounts about the Electrochem project, my colleagues and I at Imani took the initiative to personally engage with the management of Electrochem Ghana Limited. We visited the facilities and the surrounding area to assess the situation firsthand. What we discovered was nothing short of impressive.

Electrochem, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company under the McDan Group, has transformed the Songhor Lagoon into Africa’s largest industrial salt production site. With an investment exceeding $88 million, the project currently produces 650,000 metric tons of salt annually, with plans to increase this to one million metric tons by 2024 and two million by 2027.

This achievement is particularly remarkable considering the historical challenges faced in harnessing the potential of the Songhor Lagoon. Previous governments had attempted to develop the area for over five decades without success. Under the leadership of Mr. Daniel McKorley, Electrochem has not only revitalized the lagoon but also created over 3,000 jobs for the local community.

Furthermore, Electrochem has launched a 1,000-acre out-grower scheme, involving seven community groups, to promote sustainable salt mining practices and provide additional employment opportunities . The company has also constructed over 70 community salt pans at its own expense, facilitating traditional mining activities for local residents .

Despite these commendable efforts, Electrochem has faced unwarranted criticism and opposition. However, a recent investigation by The Fourth Estate revealed that many of the negative narratives were unfounded, with local miners regaining access to the lagoon and resuming their traditional activities without hindrance .

This project exemplifies the potential of indigenous entrepreneurship to drive national development. If this were a foreign investment, it would undoubtedly receive widespread acclaim. Instead, it is a testament to the vision and determination of a Ghanaian businessman who has not only revitalized a vital resource but also uplifted an entire community.

It is imperative that the government, local leaders, and all Ghanaians rally behind Electrochem and Mr. Dan McKorley. Their success is our success. Supporting this initiative will not only bolster our economy but also position Ghana as a leader in sustainable industrial salt production.

Let us unite in support of this remarkable project and ensure its continued success for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Mingle targets glory with Nations FC after taking swipe at former club

Kassim Mingle is the head coach of Nations FC Kassim Mingle is the head coach of Nations FC

Kassim Mingle, head coach of Nations FC, has thrown down the gauntlet in the Ghana Premier League title race, declaring his side’s unshakable ambition following a statement 3-0 win over defending champions FC Samartex 1996.

Speaking to Akoma FM, Mingle made a pointed comparison to his previous club, Bechem United, suggesting a lack of ambition stifled their potential.

“I worked at Bechem, and we came close several times, but they were not really interested in winning the league,” he said.

However, the ambition at Nations, according to Mingle, is different and, as such will make sure he delivers.

“Here at Nations, the ambition is clear: they want the title, and I’m prepared to deliver,” he added.

The win over Samartex, played in front of a buzzing home crowd on Sunday, May 25, 2025, lifted Nations FC three points clear at the top of the table with just two matches left to play.

But Mingle has cautioned against getting comfortable with their situation.

“We will not allow complacency to creep into our team. We will stay focused and push until the last game to prove we are truly champions,” he further stated.

The victory pushed Nations FC to 60 points, three ahead of their nearest challengers, Bibiani Gold Stars FC, putting the club in pole position to clinch their first-ever Ghana Premier League title.

Mingle, however, is not allowing the euphoria to derail the mission.

“The race is still open. We’re taking it one game at a time, first against Basake, then Heart of Lions,” he cautioned.

Nations FC will travel to face Basake Holy Stars in Matchday 33 before concluding their campaign at home against Heart of Lions.

With everything still to play for, the club’s discipline, hunger, and clarity of purpose, so powerfully voiced by their coach, could be the difference between coming close and becoming champions.

Plane carrying Liberian president involved in landing scare

The presidential jet's landing gear malfunctioned, authorities say The presidential jet’s landing gear malfunctioned, authorities say

Flights were temporarily disrupted at Liberia main airport on Thursday night after a private jet carrying President Joseph Boakai almost crashed while landing.

Part of the presidential jet’s landing gear malfunctioned while approaching the runway, causing a rough landing, airport authorities said.

The incident, which sparked panic at the airport, forced the cancellation of all scheduled flights for the night, local media reported.

President Boakai, who was returning from a trip in Nigeria with his entourage, was safely evacuated unharmed, as authorities announced an investigation.

Photos of the stalled jet at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) circulated on social media, triggering concerns about the president’s safety.

Local media, citing airport authorities, said one of the plane’s tyres had burst upon landing leaving it stranded on the runway.

In a statement, the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) confirmed the “unfortunate near-accident situation” involving the presidential jet.

The authority dismissed reports suggesting that the incident was caused by poor runway conditions.

“The runway infrastructure remains fully compliant with international aviation safety standards,” the LAA said.

The aircraft has since been removed from the runway and normal operations have resumed at the airport, the authorities said.

“At this stage, investigation to establish the actual cause of the incident is ongoing, and the airport authority will keep the public informed,” the LAA said.

The Liberian presidency is yet to comment on the incident but it shared photos of Boakai arriving at the airport, where he briefly spoke to journalists without mentioning the plane scare.

He had gone to Nigeria to attend the 50th anniversary of the regional Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).

Braided hairstyles offer a versatile and stylish way to express individuality while providing protective benefits for your hair. Whether you’re aiming for a classic look or something more contemporary, there’s a braided style to suit every preference. Here are some popular braided hairstyles for ladies:

1. Box Braids

A timeless and protective style, box braids involve sectioning the hair into square-shaped parts and braiding extensions into each section. They can be styled in various lengths and thicknesses, offering flexibility and ease of maintenance.

2. Knotless Braids

Similar to box braids but without the knot at the base, knotless braids provide a more natural look and reduce tension on the scalp. They’re lightweight and can be styled in numerous ways, making them a comfortable choice for many.

3. Cornrows

Cornrows are braids that lie flat against the scalp, created by weaving the hair underhand. They can be styled in straight lines or intricate patterns, offering both simplicity and complexity depending on the desired look.

4. Fulani Braids

Originating from the Fulani people of West Africa, this style combines cornrows with box braids and often incorporates beads or accessories. Fulani braids are known for their distinctive patterns and cultural significance.

5. Ghana Braids

Also known as banana braids, Ghana braids are thicker cornrows that start small and gradually become larger. They offer a bold and elegant appearance, suitable for various occasions.

6. French Braids

A classic style where hair is braided close to the scalp, incorporating sections as you move down. French braids are versatile and can be worn in various settings, from casual to formal.

7. Fishtail Braids

This intricate style involves weaving small sections of hair together to create a pattern resembling a fishtail. Fishtail braids offer a chic and polished look, perfect for special occasions.

8. Dutch Braids

Similar to French braids but with the hair woven underhand, creating a braid that sits atop the hair. Dutch braids provide a more pronounced and voluminous appearance.

Remember, when choosing a braided hairstyle, consider your hair type, lifestyle, and the amount of maintenance you’re comfortable with. Consulting with a professional stylist can also provide personalized recommendations to achieve the best results.

NDC Communicator demands proof from Old Tafo MP over ‘Unity Match’ visa allegations

0

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team and Public Relations Officer of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Godwin Mahama Ayaba, has challenged the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, to provide concrete evidence supporting his claims of visa facilitation for NDC supporters under the guise of attending the ‘Unity Match’.

The MP had earlier alleged in a Facebook post that over 500 NDC members were sent to VFS Global to apply for UK visas, purportedly to attend the international football event dubbed the ‘Unity Match’, featuring teams from Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. He claimed the process was facilitated by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

In response, Mr. Mahama issued a strong rebuttal, calling on the lawmaker to substantiate his claims. “As concerned citizens, we must now demand that you substantiate these claims with facts and documentation,” he said.

He argued that such serious allegations, especially coming from a Member of Parliament, must be backed by credible evidence rather than unverified assertions.

“Parliamentary oversight must be conducted responsibly, grounded in verifiable evidence, not conjecture or hearsay,” he added. “As a lawmaker and lawyer, you are well aware that he who alleges must prove, and that burden lies solely on you.”

Mr. Mahama criticised what he described as an emerging pattern of politically motivated accusations intended to distract rather than hold individuals accountable. He contrasted Mr. Assafuah’s approach with that of NDC MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, whom he described as meticulous and fact-based in his oversight efforts.

“It appears your actions, and those of some of your colleagues, are motivated more by political equalisation than by the pursuit of accountability,” he said. “While Hon. Ablakwa supports his claims with intercepted documents and well-documented investigations, yours appear to be hasty, speculative, and lacking evidentiary support.”

Mr. Mahama further questioned whether the MP had any proof of fraudulent conduct in the visa application process or if any applicants had been denied travel after making payment.

He challenged the Old Tafo MP to publicly release names, documents, and details of the alleged criminal conduct, if any.

As of the time of this publication, Mr. Assafuah has not provided any evidence to support his claims.

Set realistic KPIs for assembly members

0

The Policy Adviser for Political Affairs at the Office of the Vice President, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to establish realistic Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess the work of assembly members.

Speaking at the maiden interface meeting with the 33 Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Eastern Region, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo said the move would ensure accountability and promote development at the local level.

He noted that the government has allocated sufficient funds for the payment of monthly allowances to assembly members to empower them to function effectively.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo urged MMDCEs to create a harmonious working environment for assembly members and to commit to the provisions of local governance laws. He also encouraged them to emulate the humility and leadership qualities of President John Dramani Mahama.

“Being appointed by the president means you must reflect his image—his humility, knowledge, and deep understanding of governance. Take time to study the Local Government Act and understand your role in driving development,” he said.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey also addressed the gathering, urging MMDCEs to engage stakeholders to identify sustainable avenues for internally generated funds (IGF), boost local revenue, and ensure transparency in resource use.

“As you assume office, public expectations are high. Citizens are looking for improved sanitation, quality education and healthcare, job creation, and effective governance. Your leadership will directly impact lives, so strategic thinking and innovation are critical,” she stated.

Franklin Cudjoe to Minority: Challenge Wontumi’s Bail Conditions Legally, Not Through Protests

News Hub Creator5h

IMANI Africa’s Founding President, Franklin Cudjoe, has advised the Minority in Parliament to address concerns over Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s bail conditions through legal channels rather than public demonstrations as reported by Ghana Web.

Boasiako has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since May 27.

He was granted bail set at GHS50 million with two sureties but remains in custody as he is yet to meet the terms. Reports suggest he is unwell.

On May 29, the Minority staged a walkout in Parliament and marched to EOCO’s Accra headquarters, demanding his release. They condemned the bail terms as excessive and punitive.

Responding to the protest, Cudjoe stressed the importance of legal redress. “Arguments for reduction are done in courts, not on the streets,” he remarked in a social media post, urging the MPs to challenge the conditions in court if they believe they are unjust.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai disclosed that Chairman Wontumi is being investigated for serious offences including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

He added that EOCO is also engaged in asset recovery to safeguard suspected proceeds of crime.

Dr. Srem Sai further indicated that the businessman is linked to a broader international crime investigation. “EOCO is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations,” he stated.

Maxwell Kudekor runs for GJA National Organising Secretary post

0

Journalist and long-serving media unionist Maxwell Kudekor has formally entered the race for the position of National Organising Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), pledging to bring “rich organisational experience and leadership” to the national secretariat.

Maxwell Kudekor, who also works with the Multimedia Group Ltd as the Eastern Regional Correspondent, with over a decade of union involvement, confirmed his candidacy in a message to colleagues and stakeholders in the media fraternity.

“Respectfully, I have submitted my nomination to contest the GJA National Organising Secretary position,” he announced in a statement released ahead of the official campaign period.

Mr Kudekor’s candidacy is backed by an extensive leadership record within the GJA, particularly in the Eastern Region.

He has served two terms as Regional Secretary and two terms as Regional Chairman, earning him a seat at the national table as a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association.

Throughout his tenure, he is credited with playing a pivotal role in revitalising regional structures, deepening member mobilisation, and advocating for enhanced benefits for journalists at the grassroots.

“My priority is to promote membership benefits and advance the interests of our dear Association,” Kudekor stated, adding that his focus will include the welfare of journalists, broadcasters, and media workers across Ghana and in the diaspora.

The journalist and entrepreneur’s message comes at a critical time when journalists in Ghana continue to face threats ranging from physical assaults to economic precarity and legal intimidation.

He underscored the importance of standing firm in defense of press freedom and journalist safety.

“Together, we can promote and protect total media freedom and the welfare of journalists, broadcasters, and media workers in Ghana and beyond,” Kudekor said, striking a tone of solidarity and collective responsibility.

While he has made his intentions public, Kudekor stressed that his campaign will adhere strictly to the GJA electoral calendar.

The Association is expected to officially announce the timeline for campaigning, vetting, and voting in the coming weeks as it prepares for national executive elections.

“As we await the commencement of the official campaign in line with the election calendar, I pray for your support in my quest to serve our Association in rectitude,” he noted.

Strategic Role of Organising Secretary

The position of National Organising Secretary is seen as a backbone role within the GJA’s executive structure, responsible for membership mobilisation, union strengthening, event coordination, and ensuring regional chapters remain active and connected to national policy directives.

With his long-standing history in regional mobilisation and national policy engagement, Kudekor is expected to be a formidable contender in the upcoming polls.

His entry into the race adds to what political watchers within the media fraternity anticipate will be a competitive and consequential election as journalists seek a revitalised and responsive leadership to confront the many challenges facing the profession.

Maxwell Kudekor holds a Master of Arts degree in Development Communication from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication studies from the same institution.

He also holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration ( GIMPA).

He was the Interim Executive Committee Chairman for the GIMPA Law Students Association in 2023.

At GIMPA, he supervised the reorganisation of the Law Students Association, led the review of the Association’s constitution, conducted a peaceful election and restored the association back to its roots after a prolonged election dispute.

Extreme exchange rate volatility can be risky – Panelists

0

Panelists on an International Labour Organisation (ILO) Tripartite Roundtable Discussion have stated that extreme exchange rate volatility can be risky and hurt businesses.

The roundtable discussion was on productivity, jobs, and growth in Ghana, using the National Productivity Statistics Report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) as a basis.

Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) and a panelist, said it was normal for Ghanaians to be jubilant about the appreciation of the cedis due to the rate at which the cedi depreciated in the past.

“The challenge, however, is that extreme volatility can be very risky and hurtful for some sectors. What is happening now is hurting exports,” he said.

He noted that what the business community wanted was a stable exchange rate that allows businesses to plan both for the short and long term.

“Given where we have come from, we should be allowed to pat ourselves on the back and be encouraged to do more to make sure that the cedi regains some of its loss and value,” he added.

Dr Otoo further stated that from an economic perspective, what is needed is a stable exchange rate, not one that depreciates sharply and appreciates sharply the next day.

Nana Poquah A. A. Adiamah, the National Coordinator of the Association of Ghana Apparel Manufacturers (AGAM), said they have mixed reactions to the appreciation of the cedi, indicating that export-oriented companies stand to lose.

Nana Adiamah stated: “We are watching how the currency will go and make business strategies based on that.”

Mr Kingsley Laar, an Economist and Senior Researcher at the Ghana Employers’ Association, re-echoed that the sustainability of businesses depends on the ability to predict the macroeconomy, including the exchange rate, and make decisions.

He added that exchange rate volatility makes decision-making difficult and impacts productivity, indicating that monetary policies from the central bank sometimes increase production costs and reduce the purchasing power of businesses.

Wontumi detention: Police deploy additional officers to EOCO HQ amid security beef-up

0

A heavy police presence has been observed at the headquarters of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra as security has been significantly reinforced.

The exact reason for the sudden move remains unclear.

Multiple police officers have been deployed to the premises, with more arriving in batches to secure the area.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, was also briefly present to assess the situation and interact with personnel on the ground.

Speculations suggest that the heightened security may be linked to the expected arrival of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is scheduled to visit the EOCO office at 3:00 PM.

However, authorities have not confirmed this.

The development follows Thursday’s protest by the Minority caucus and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who stormed the EOCO headquarters to demand a review of the bail conditions for NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi has been in custody for over 48 hours, with the NPP members describing his GH₵50 million bail as “excessive and unfair.” The protesters vowed to remain at the EOCO office until his release, but dispersed after about three hours.

As tensions linger, the heavy police deployment has raised questions about whether further demonstrations are anticipated or if the move is part of broader security measures.

JoyNews will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.

Meanwhile, Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire constituency, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has claimed that the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman has refused to eat in protest against his detention conditions, describing the supposed hunger strike as a desperate measure amid what he terms “shocking” treatment by EOCO officials.

Bawumia leads efforts to secure bail for Wontumi

0

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is actively coordinating efforts to secure bail for Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, May 27, as investigations continue into allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

On Wednesday, May 28, he was granted bail in the sum of GHS 50 million, but has so far been unable to meet the bail conditions, resulting in his continued detention.

The prolonged custody of the NPP regional chairman has sparked political controversy, prompting a parliamentary boycott and public protest by Minority MPs, who have criticised the bail conditions as excessive and politically motivated.

In an interview with Citi News, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP, Divine Agorhom, confirmed that senior party figures—including Dr. Bawumia—are engaged in efforts to secure Wontumi’s release.

“It is not only His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia but every senior party person. We are hoping that the EOCO itself will be able to vary the condition a bit more lenient for us to meet,” Agorhom said.

He indicated that the party is also exploring legal options if EOCO does not revise the bail terms.

“If that is not the case, my understanding is that the council is considering legal avenues to vary the conditions. If all that fails, then we will have to pull resources and see what we can do to get him out.

“Not only His Excellency the Former Vice President, but all leading members, including our caucus in parliament and the national leadership. They are all involved in finding a solution.”

The situation continues to generate debate across the political spectrum, as the NPP hierarchy mobilises resources and explores both legal and diplomatic channels to secure the release of one of its most prominent regional leaders.

Captain (Rtd) Denis Mahama Adams, father of the late Major Maxwell Mahama, has called for an end to mob justice as the family commemorates eight years since his brutal killing.

In a solemn tribute shared on the Ghana Armed Forces’ X page on May 29, 2025, the family was seen laying wreath at the grave of the fallen soldier.

Major Mahama was tragically lynched in Denkyira Obuasi, Central Region, on May 29, 2017 – a crime that shook the nation.

His father expressed deep gratitude to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their unwavering support since the tragedy that claimed his son’s life.

“We are here to honor Major Mahama and ensure his legacy continues to inspire the nation,” Captain (Rtd) Denis Mahama Adams stated.

He condemned mob justice, calling it an unacceptable practice that must end.

“I urge all Ghanaians to uphold the rule of law and reject such acts,” he said.

During the solemn ceremony at Osu Cemetery in Accra, family members took turns laying wreaths in remembrance of the late soldier.

The commemoration coincided with the 77th United Nations Day for Peacekeepers, a day dedicated to celebrating the courage of soldiers who risk their lives daily to safeguard citizens and maintain peace.

Minority Caucus reverses boycott, attends Parliament despite Wontumi’s GH¢50m bail protest

0

Parliament House of Ghana Parliament House of Ghana

Leadership and members of the Minority Caucus were present in Parliament on Friday, May 30, 2025, despite an earlier announcement to boycott proceedings.

The boycott was declared in response to the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) GH¢50 million bail imposed on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Benard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the Minority staged a walkout from Parliament and marched to the EOCO office to protest Chairman Wontumi’s detention.

Upon arriving at EOCO’s office, the Minority MPs sat on the street in front of the building for several minutes to protest the detention of Chairman Wontumi and what they described as “unfair” bail conditions.

Chairman Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since Tuesday, May 27, 2025, over an ongoing probe into alleged financial irregularities involving EXIMBANK.

EOCO granted him bail with strict conditions of GH¢50 million and two sureties, which his legal team has so far been unable to satisfy.

AI & Automation – The secret weapons transforming customer experience in Ghana

0

Once seen as the stuff of sci-fi movies, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation have quietly made their way into boardrooms, banking halls, hotel systems, and customer service centres across Ghana. And for forward-looking businesses, they are proving to be a game-changer.

It took a global pandemic to jolt many business leaders into realising just how vital these technologies are—not just for innovation’s sake, but for real-world survival. Companies that embraced AI and automation early were more adaptable, more profitable, and more responsive to shifting customer needs during the toughest of times. Today, the smart use of digital intelligence is no longer optional. It’s the foundation of a great customer experience—something Ghanaian consumers now expect.

AI and automation: a dynamic duo

While often used interchangeably, AI and automation perform different, complementary roles in your business:

•    AI helps understand what the customer wants. It thinks, learns, and analyses.

•    Automation executes actions based on that understanding. It does the repetitive tasks.

Together, they reduce delays, improve service, and free up human employees to focus on high-value, complex customer issues—not answering “What are your working hours?” for the hundredth time. Forget the Hollywood vision of robots walking through your office. In reality, these technologies silently power call centres, chatbots, booking engines, and CRM systems—boosting efficiency and cutting costs.

Let humans be human

Customer-facing staff, especially in Ghana’s telecom, banking, and hospitality sectors, often feel overwhelmed with repetitive questions and long queues. AI and automation offer a new way of working—delegating routine questions to bots, and empowering staff to focus on personalised support. “Our staff used to spend hours handling simple requests,” says Akua Mensah, a customer service lead at a leading Ghanaian bank. “Now, our system handles the basics automatically, and our team handles the rest with more care and less stress.”

LatexFoamPromo

By reducing call times and avoiding long hold queues, businesses not only save money—they also make customers feel heard, valued, and respected.

Case study: Hotels and booking in the digital era

Consider a hotel group in Accra using automated services during peak travel season. Their AI-powered system scanned thousands of customer bookings, checked hotel availability, and sent real-time updates—all within seconds. No manual intervention. No errors. Just fast, consistent communication that elevated the customer experience.

Smarter conversations, better outcomes

Tools like agent-assist—now being explored in some Ghanaian contact centres—take AI even further. These systems listen to a live call, search multiple databases, and suggest the best next action to the agent in real time. For example, if a customer calls a local travel agency asking about a delayed trip, the AI system can pull up their file instantly, identify the issue, and suggest suitable alternatives—all before the caller finishes explaining. That’s the kind of seamless experience that builds customer loyalty in an age where brand switching is just one click away.

Data that drives growth

One of the most powerful benefits of AI and automation is data visibility. Every customer interaction becomes a data point—logged, tracked, and analysed in real time. This enables businesses to:

•    Identify customer trends and needs

•    Spot gaps in service delivery

•    Monitor team performance

•    Make smarter business decisions

With the right analytics in place, Ghanaian businesses can transform their service centres into intelligence hubs, helping leadership proactively improve services instead of reacting to complaints.

Digital experience is the new standard

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the vulnerability of businesses dependent on traditional models. Those with cloud-based customer service platforms adapted quickly to remote work, while others struggled to serve customers without access to physical infrastructure. In Ghana, businesses using outdated systems are finding it harder to compete with new digital entrants—nimble, mobile-friendly, and born in the cloud. Whether in fintech, delivery services, or e-commerce, the future belongs to those that can evolve quickly and intelligently.

What it all means for you

Whether you’re running a start-up in East Legon or managing a retail chain in Kumasi, AI and automation offer benefits you can’t afford to ignore:

•    Faster response times

•    Lower operational costs

•    Happier, more empowered staff

•    Smarter, data-driven decisions

•    Loyal customers who come back again and again

In today’s competitive environment, customer experience is the new battlefield—and AI is your most valuable ally. “Businesses in Ghana that embrace digital intelligence now will not just survive—they’ll thrive,” says Kojo Oppong, a digital transformation advisor in Accra. “Those that don’t will struggle to keep up.”

Final thought

AI and automation are no longer future technologies. They are present-day necessities for any Ghanaian business serious about delighting customers, cutting costs, and staying ahead of the curve. The question is no longer if you’ll adopt them, but how soon.

‘I am replacing Abeiku Santana at OKAY FM’

Media personality Nana Romeo has officially announced his next career move following his recent departure from Accra FM.

On May 26, 2025, Nana Romeo took to Instagram to announce the end of his working relationship with the Accra-based radio station, marking the conclusion of a huge chapter in his broadcasting career.

But revealing his next step during a recent interview with Sammy Kay on May 30, 2025, Nana Romeo disclosed that he will be joining Despite Media.

According to him, joining Despite Media has been a long-time dream since 2016.

“In 2016 Abeiku Santana showed interest in politics. And since then I have wanted to work at OKAY FM. Abeiku Santana has always been my role model. I loved him from day one,”

“Finally after almost 10 years at Accra FM, I am moving to a new family and this is a family that has always been in my heart. I have always loved to be with Despite Media precisely with OKAY FM,” he said.

When asked if he would replace Abeiku Santana as the host of “Ekwanso Dwoodwoo” at OKAY FM, Nana Romeo noted that speculations on social about his new role is true.

“I am going to play the Drive. Abeiku has Despite media at heart but you know it will get to a time when he will leave the seat for someone to take over. He is a big personality in the media space. I know I am going to fill his space and we all know that is a large space for me to fill,” he added.

He further noted that Abeiku Santana is aware of the information, and has given him his blessings.

“He is aware. How can this go on without Abeiku’s knowledge? Even if I have not told him, he knows about it. It is an open secret,” he added.

2026 Hajj fare may be under GH¢50,000 with sustained cedi strength

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has projected a further reduction in the fees paid by Ghanaian Muslims seeking to embark on a Hajj pilgrimage in 2026.

The government reduced the cost of the Hajj fare from GH¢75,000 to about GH¢60,000 for the ongoing 2025 pilgrimage.

Speaking at an event in the Bono Region as part of his “Thank You Tour”, on May 29, 2025, Mahama said that pilgrims would be paying less than GH¢50,000 for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.

He explained that the reduction stems from the remarkable strength the Ghana cedi has gained against foreign currencies.

“We also revised the fare for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage downwards. Yesterday, the last aircraft airlifted our pilgrims to Mecca, and we reduced the fares from GH¢75,000 to GH¢62,000.

“I can foresee that we can further beat down the fees because of the performance of the cedi. At the time we started paying for this year’s Hajj, the cedi was at GH¢15.5 to $1. So, the fare that we came up with for pilgrims was $4,000 which amounts to GH¢62,000 when converted to cedis,” he said.

The president added, “Next year, if you do a calculation where the cedi is currently at GH¢10.5 (to a dollar), it means that next year the fare for Hajj will probably go below GH¢50,000. So, if the cedi keeps performing the way it is, it will offer more relief to our brothers and sisters who will decide to embark on the Hajj.”

Club World Cup fines for misconduct revealed

0

The FIFA Club World Cup trophy The FIFA Club World Cup trophy

As the expanded FIFA Club World Cup kicks off next month in the United States, clubs heading into the tournament will have more than just tactics and team selection to worry about; disciplinary fines could hit their budgets hard.

FIFA have confirmed that clubs will face significant financial penalties for player and official misconduct during the competition.

A single yellow card will cost a club $12,000, while an indirect red card, resulting from two yellows, will cost $18,000.

A straight red card comes with a heavier price tag of $24,000. Team misconduct, such as multiple bookings in a single match, will also incur a $18,000 fine.

Even off-field behaviour could have consequences, with the use of lasers or flares by fans incurring a $6,000 penalty.

The referee’s authority begins the moment the team steps onto the field for the pre-match inspection and extends through to the final whistle, including any penalty shoot-outs.

If a player or official commits a sending-off offence before kickoff, the referee has the power to prevent them from participating in the match altogether.

Any other incidents that occur before the match starts will also be reported and may be subject to disciplinary action.

FIFA’s regulations for the tournament also state that any player or official who receives two yellow cards in separate matches will be suspended for the next game.

Red cards, whether direct or the result of a second yellow, trigger automatic suspension for the following match and could lead to additional sanctions, including further bans or financial penalties.

However, single yellow cards will be wiped clean after the quarter-finals, giving players a fresh start for the latter stages of the tournament.

Suspensions or bookings from domestic leagues or continental competitions will not carry over into the Club World Cup, nor will cards picked up during the tournament affect eligibility in other competitions once the event concludes.

Nigerian Women in Ghana empower girls on menstrual and emotional health

In commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Association of Nigerian Women led a powerful outreach initiative to All Saints Anglican Model Basic School in Adabraka, focused on educating teenage girls about menstrual hygiene and emotional well-being.

The delegation was led by President Millitracy Nkem Mallet and included key members such as Matron Patience Ezeh, Provost Olubunmi Sterling, Financial Secretary Madam Oreoluwa, Assistant Provost Madam Niniola Aleshe, Assistant PRO Anuoluwa Offei, and Welfare Officer Marian Shaa Allah.

The initiative aimed not just to inform, but to empower. Through open discussions and practical demonstrations, the team created a safe space for adolescent girls to explore and understand the menstrual cycle-covering topics such as the proper use of sanitary pads, the importance of personal hygiene, and preventing infections.

Recognising that reproductive health education must go beyond biology, the team also introduced sessions on emotional intelligence. These discussions addressed how to manage mood swings, build self-esteem, recognise emotions, and develop empathy skills that are critical during the challenging adolescent years.

“Many girls go through this phase feeling confused, ashamed, or alone,” said President Mallet. “We want to assure them that menstruation is natural, and with the right knowledge and emotional support, they can thrive through it.”

The event sparked open conversations, encouraged questions, and provided each

girl with a renewed sense of confidence about her body and mental well-being.

The visit highlighted the ongoing need to demystify menstruation in African communities, where silence and stigma often leave young girls unprepared and ashamed. By combining menstrual education with emotional empowerment, the Association of Nigerian Women is setting a strong example of holistic health advocacy for girls.

The outreach concluded with the distribution of sanitary supplies and educational materials to all participating students, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to supporting girls in both practical and psychological ways.

Dumelo launches $87m ‘Bridge in Agriculture’ to support youth, women

0

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, John Dumelo, has officially launched the Bridge in Agriculture Programme, a transformative initiative aimed at providing affordable capital and technical support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in agriculture and related sectors across Ghana.

Speaking at the launch on Thursday, May 29, Mr Dumelo highlighted the importance of the programme in Ghana’s drive for inclusive, technology-driven, and youth-centred agricultural transformation.

He expressed the government’s appreciation to the Mastercard Foundation for its bold vision and commitment to creating dignified and fulfilling employment opportunities for young people across Africa.

“Agriculture employs close to 40% of Ghana’s total workforce and supports about 75% of the rural population,” he stated.

“However, the sector still faces critical challenges including limited access to finance, climate vulnerabilities, inadequate infrastructure, and a slow adoption of modern practices.”

He noted that the Bridge in Agriculture Programme is a strategic breakthrough, with $87 million allocated through partner banks to support agribusinesses, particularly those led by women and youth. Loans under the programme will be offered at interest rates not exceeding 7%, with extensive hands-on capacity building for beneficiaries.

The initiative is expected to benefit over 400,000 Ghanaian youth, 70% of whom will be women, and is aligned with the Ministry of Agriculture’s “Food to Feed Ghana” programme. The goal is to transition young entrepreneurs from subsistence farming to commercially viable and technologically enabled enterprises that are competitive in both domestic and international markets.

Encouraging the youth, Mr Dumelo advised, “Start small, grow gradually, and you will become bigger one day.”

Fanta Fandi, Programme Lead for the Bridge in Agriculture Programme, described it as a flagship initiative of the Mastercard Foundation developed in 2023.

She explained that the Foundation is providing partner banks with 0% interest repayable grants to lend to SMEs at a capped rate of 7%, with embedded guarantees and additional funds to cover higher loan monitoring costs within the agriculture sector.

Fandi added that so far, the programme has impacted about 86,000 young Ghanaians aged 18 to 35 with new or improved work opportunities.

Business development service providers are also training participants in vocational and digital skills and connecting them to dignified employment opportunities.

The programme is being implemented through a partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and CrossBoundary Advisory, which leads a consortium of ten partners. The consortium includes Africa Skills Hub and iBuilders Africa (business development providers), Peswa (a technology provider), and other strategic partners working to deliver lasting impact in Ghana’s agriculture sector.

Use DACF wisely or face dismissal

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is set to release the first quarter of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

This follows criticism from the Minority who accused the Finance Minister of intentionally withholding funds from key government institutions despite clear legal obligations and the availability of resources nearly six months into the new administration.

Speaking during his Thank-You tour of the Bono East Region on Friday, May 30, the President warned that failure on the part of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to effectively utilise the allocated resources could result in their dismissal.

“The Minister of Finance is about to release the first quarter of the District Assemblies Common Fund. As I said, 80% of the money is going directly to the regions for you to decide how to use it. So, MMDCEs, you have no excuse.

“We will send you the guidelines, approved at the last Cabinet meeting, to show how the funds should be disbursed. This will serve as your Key Performance Indicators. Every year, we will assess your performance, and based on that, we will decide whether you stay or go,” he said.

President Mahama is expected to continue his regional tour in the Bono Region on Friday, May 30.

  • Gisela Amponsah’s reason for leaving Glitch Africa’s Rants, Bants and Confessions podcast after a season has caught the attention of Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson.

  • Her frustrations with Glitch Africa influenced Lydia Forson to criticise the trend of showrunners prioritising sensational content

Gisela, who left the show with Ama Burland after a season, talked about her exit for the first time in the debut episode of her new show, Let’s Do Drinks.

According to Gisela, there was too much drama behind the scenes with the show runners. She called out the producers for prioritising YouTube views over the mental health and well-being of the hosts.

Gisela accused the producer of deliberately paying bloggers to intentionally insult her and the other hosts on social media for the show’s publicity.

Ama Burland rehashed Gisela’s frustrations as she decided to quit the show for similar reasons.

The show now runs with Perfect Match Xtra season 2 contestant Rose Owusu Konadu, popularly known as Rosey, social media personality and entrepreneur Adjoa Tasha and Efia Odo, who is the only one part of the original team.

Glitch Africa, founded by Nigerian mogul Best Amakhian, prides itself as Africa’s biggest creator network.

In Nigeria, a situation akin to Gisela’s happened as Nigerian radio personality Chinedu Emmanuel, popularly known as Nedu Wazobia of the Honest Bunch Podcast, linked to Glitch Africa, stepped down.

He cited the need to protect his “peace of mind,” family, and the show’s integrity.

Lydia Forson supports Gisela Amponsah

According to the award-winning actress Lydia Forson, there is a growing trend of young people falling prey to showrunners who only care about their views and not their mental health.

Lydia Foron, in a post on social media, empathised with Gisela, stating that she was proud of her for speaking up.

“I believe her. A lady on one of these podcasts made the same claim to me recently, and I had to remind her that, in the end, it was HER face and not the producers out there. Too many young people are exploited for views and ratings on these shows. Proud of them,” she said.

“There’s a reason why it seems I’m always at odds with the media, bloggers, etc, because most of them are on this table. They focus on sensational clips, headlines and anything to get people fired up to insult you, all for views and against your mental health,” Lydia Forson added.

Fan demands Gisela and Burland’s return

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Efia Odo had responded to a fan who questioned the absence of Ama Burland and Gisela Amponsah from the new season of Rants, Bants and Confessions.

She told the fans they could follow the former hosts on their personal pages if they missed them. The new episode of the podcast has actor Tonardo as the latest guest on the show.

Wontumi case: Don’t crucify suspect before charges are filed – Appiah-Kubi to Srem-Sai

0

Andy Appiah-Kubi, lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed disappointment in Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, over his public remarks regarding ongoing investigations.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Appiah-Kubi criticised the Deputy AG for making prejudicial comments while the matter is still under investigation.

According to him, no formal charges have been filed against Wontumi yet, and the case is still under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

“As we speak, no official charges have been brought against my client. EOCO is still in the preliminary stages of investigation.

“The only issue under probe, as I understand it, is whether some of Wontumi’s dealings have caused financial loss to the state. That’s the first stage, not the conclusion,” he stated.

Appiah-Kubi stressed that the proper legal processes must be followed and warned against trial by public opinion.

“Prosecution is done in a court of law, not on social media or in public statements. “It’s very shocking and disappointing that such sensitive information was released to the public before we were officially served. This undermines justice and the human rights of my client” he noted.

He also reacted to the Deputy AG’s post on X (formerly Twitter), where Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that Wontumi is under investigation for offences including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

In his post, Justice Srem-Sai wrote that Bernard Antwi Boasiako is under investigation for “various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering).”

The Deputy AG added that the investigation is running alongside asset recovery processes to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies believe to be proceeds of crime.

But Appiah-Kubi believes the public statement was premature and unnecessary.

“At the end of the day, if it turns out that the charges are not even valid, the damage would have already been done,” he argued.

“We expect the office of the Attorney General to act with professionalism and fairness, not be influenced by sentiment or public pressure.”

He further disclosed that Wontumi remains in custody after failing to meet his bail conditions.

He noted that efforts are underway to secure sureties and secure his release.

“Our focus now is to meet the bail conditions, but until then, let’s not crucify him before the facts are laid bare in court.”

Appiah-Kubi concluded by calling on the Attorney General’s office to uphold justice without political or emotional interference.

“Let justice be done according to law—not based on social media narratives.”

Gold Output To Exceed 5m Ounces In 2025 – Chamber Of Mines

0

Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has projected that the country’s gold production will hit over 5 million ounces, by the end of 2025.

The outlook follows a strong recovery in 2023, when the country reclaimed its position as Africa’s top gold producer.

Domestic output rose by 32% to 3.7 million ounces, up from 2.8 million ounces in 2021.

Acting CEO of the Chamber, Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, speaking on the sidelines of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo in Accra, said the Chamber fully supports strategic initiatives aimed at boosting foreign exchange earnings—including the government’s Goldbod initiative to enhance macroeconomic stability.

“In terms of function, whatever they said Goldbod will do looks good on paper and we as a chamber even has a representation on the board so we hope to work with them to make mining more sustainable. Because a lot of gold comes from the small scale mining sector about 40 percent and it will shore up our foreign exchange earnings,” he said.

“For projections we are looking at in excess of 5 million ounces in 2025” he added.

Minority MPs return to Parliament despite protest over Wontumi’s detention

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament made a surprising return to the House on Friday, May 30, 2025, ending a brief boycott that stemmed from the GHC50 million bail condition imposed on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi, who has been in custody since Tuesday, May 27, following his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), was granted bail under conditions the NPP described as excessively stringent and politically motivated. The hefty bail amount sparked outrage within the party and its parliamentary caucus.

On Thursday, May 29, Minority MPs staged a walkout in protest against EOCO’s handling of the case, with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin vocally condemning the bail conditions and signaling the caucus’s withdrawal from parliamentary business until the issue was resolved.

“We are not going to ask for any property. We don’t have GH₵50 million. Where is he going to get it from? They must do the right thing, and we will not be part of any proceeding until then,” Afenyo-Markin, who is also the MP for Effutu, declared on the parliamentary floor before leading the protest.

He further pledged solidarity with Chairman Wontumi, stating, “We will stand with him. If it means we have to spend nights with him, we will do so.”

Despite this firm stance, members of the Minority Caucus were present in Parliament on Friday to participate in the day’s proceedings, signaling a de-escalation in tensions after the dramatic events of the previous day.

While the exact reasons behind the caucus’s return were not immediately disclosed, the move suggested behind-the-scenes negotiations or reassurances that helped ease the standoff.

On Thursday, May 29, Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed that Chairman Wontumi, is currently under investigation for a series of serious criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Justice Srem-Sai disclosed that the ongoing investigation is being handled by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), with asset recovery efforts already underway to secure suspected proceeds of crime.

“Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering),” the Deputy Attorney General stated.

Mr Luca Fedi, an Employment Specialist, gave a brief on the context for productivity and jobs in Ghana and said a look at the sectoral performance revealed that the extractive industry was performing well in Ghana.

Mr Fedi added, however, that though the extractive sector was doing well, they operated as an island, as their successes did not create the linkages to allow the economy to transform.

He noted that the overall economic transformation of Ghana has been slow, indicating that the sectors that would bring the needed transformation were manufacturing and agriculture, noting that their productivity, however, remains small in terms of employment and therefore needs some expansion

.

He said in Ghana, earnings are lagging behind jobs and urged for an improvement in the minimum wages.

The panelist during the discussion agreed that Ghana needed macroeconomic stability and the need for a consensus on what that stability means and how to achieve it.

They also agreed on the importance of improving working conditions and fixing infrastructural deficits such as road connectivity for the charting of food items from the farms to the urban areas instead of leaving them to rot while food prices are high in the cities.

The panelists were Mr Kingsley Laar, an Economist and Senior Researcher at the Ghana Employers’ Association; Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC); and Nana Poquah A. A. Adiamah, the National Coordinator of the Association of Ghana Apparel Manufacturers (AGAM).

The others were Mr George Amoah, the Director of Trade Research, Statistics and Information Management (RSIM) at the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry; and Mr Theodore Mawuli Amezah, Senior Planning Officer at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment.
