Bawumia charges NPP delegates with emotional, ‘mixed feelings’

0

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stirred emotions at the 2025 NPP National Delegates Conference in Accra.

Delivering a solidarity message to stakeholders of the party from all levels, Dr. Bawumia expressed his “mixed feelings’ to the delegates, wishing that he was addressing the delegates ”under different circumstances. “

“It is with mixed feelings that I welcome you all to this national delegates conference,” Dr. Bawumia said

”It is a joy to see the representation of our party from across the country converge once again for conference. I however would have wished that we would have been doing this under different circumstances.”

Dr. Bawumia, despite his mixed feelings clearly reflecting the unfortunate defeat of the NPP in the 2024 elections, also expressed strong optimism for the future and rallied members of the party to embrace the party’s rebuilding move with unity at all levels, and look forward to another opportunity to serve the nation.

“Yet still I am filled with hope, that as we reflect and reorganize we will soon be given the opportunity once again by our countrymen and women to serve and assist in rebuilding and transforming our nation,” he said.

“The task ahead of us, is one that we have to conduct with diligence and measure. In times like this, we should be focussed on strengthening our bonds of unity and reinvesting in the ties that bind us. Our foundation and our strength has always been in building a united party.”

NPP Delegates reject motion to redefine youth age limit

0

Delegates at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, overwhelmingly rejected a motion seeking to redefine the age limit for youth within the party’s constitution.

In a voice vote that rang through the University of Ghana Stadium, the loud yell of “NO” from delegates sealed the fate of Motion 54, which sought to amend Article 15(4) of the party’s constitution to define a youth as a member of the party “not above the age of 35 years.”

Presenting the motion, Chairman of the NPP Constitutional Amendment Committee, Frank Davies, explained the intent was to align the party’s definition of youth with global and national standards.

“Motion 54, Amend Article 15(4) of the NPP constitution by defining youth in the constitution to refer to a member of the party who is not above the age of 35 years,” Mr. Davies announced to the gathering.

Reading the committee’s justification for the motion, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah referenced several international benchmarks, noting that many global institutions set 35 as the upper limit for youth.

“The age limit for youth according to all the international conventions and laws shows that the highest is 35. The UN puts the youth bracket between 15 and 24 years, WHO says 15 to 29, UNICEF uses 15 to 24, and the African Youth Charter defines it as 15 to 35. In Ghana, the National Youth Authority Act, Act 939, defines a youth as someone between 15 and 25,” he elaborated.

Despite the rationale, the delegates decisively voted against the change. The voice vote was so resounding that no formal count was needed.

Chairman Frank Davies confirmed the outcome:

“The ‘No’ has it, meaning we revert to the status quo, which puts the age of youth at not above 40 years.”

The rejection of the motion means the party will maintain its current constitutional definition, which allows individuals up to the age of 40 to be considered part of the youth wing, a move that preserves the status of several current youth leaders.

Saturday’s session forms part of a larger agenda at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference, which is reviewing over 50 motions derived from more than 300 amendment proposals submitted nationwide.

Themed “Rebuilding Together with our Values,” the conference, attended by over 5,500 delegates, comes at a critical time for the party as it seeks to realign and reenergise following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

‘Crack the whip’ for party discipline – Bawumia urges NPP leadership

0

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to enforce strict discipline within the party as it undergoes internal reforms.

Speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Dr. Bawumia stressed the need for unity, humility, and accountability if the party hopes to regain public trust and return to power.

“To the leadership of the party, I ask that you be firm and crack the whip so that discipline is maintained within our ranks,” he said. “There should be discipline, humility, lessons learnt, and the pursuit of a common good for Ghana that we can become the refreshed party we desire.”

Dr. Bawumia also urged party members to let the national interest guide their actions throughout the reform process.

“In all our decisions and our actions towards the reform process, let us be guided by the rule of what is in the best interest of Ghana,” he said.

NPP delegates maintain youth age limit at 40

By Edward Acquah

Accra, July 19, GNA – Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have rejected a proposed amendment of the Party’s Constitution to cut the youth age limit at 35.

The rejection means that that the age limit for a person to contest the NPP youth organiser position will be maintained at 40.

The proposal was roundly rejected by delegates at the Party’s National Delegates Conference in Accra.

The Conference is the highest decision-making body of the Party.

More than 5,500 delegates met to deliberate on 56 constitutional reform proposals submitted by the Constitutional Amendment Committee.

Earlier, the delegates rejected a proposed amendment to allow constituencies to be directly involved in the compilation of albums for polling station elections.

The delegates also accepted the proposal to expand the base of delegates who elect the party’s presidential candidate by 40 per cent.

The reform will lead to the abolishment of Article 13(1)(9) of the NPP constitution which established the Special Electoral College.

The new structure would include members of the National Council, National Executive Committee, Regional and Constituency Executive Committees, Electoral Area Coordinators, Polling Station Executives, National Council of Elders, National Patrons, all past National Directors, sitting and past MPs, and TESCON representatives from each recognised tertiary institution.

The rest are all card-bearing ministers and deputy ministers, MMDCEs, 15 delegates from every external branch, founder members, and three representatives each from special organs of the party.

Proponent of the reform had argued that the existing elctoral college structure was not representative.

The Conference, on the theme: “Rebuilding Together with our Values,” seeks to promote unity and harmony within the party and work together recapture power in 2028.

Ghanaians must see the lessons we have learned

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has urged Ghanaians to recognise the lessons learned by the New Patriotic Party as they reorganize themselves.

Addressing delegates during their annual conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on July 19, 2025, Dr Bawumia established the objective of the party’s reorganisation as not only to win the 2028 elections but also to deliver better governance to the citizenry.

“We must be consistent in pursuance of our effort to address not just the challenges within but more importantly the challenges that bedevil our motherland,” he said.

He continued; “We have also learned useful lessons in how to improve some things in the future. We must remain resolute and consistent in doing the right things again and in applying the lessons the next time.”

“We must ensure that Ghanaians genuinely see the lessons we have learnt and are willing to apply next time round. We shouldn’t be shy about them. It is then that our fellow country men and women will give us another opportunity to serve.”

Dr Bawumia added that the “monumental” achievements by Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will “stand the test of time”.

“Pouring Water Into A Basket” – Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe Explains Why He Stopped Paying NPP Dues

0

A founding figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has declared he remains a committed member of the party but will no longer contribute financially due to what he perceives as a departure from the original values as reported by Ghana Web.

In an interview, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed concern over the party’s current direction, stating that he would not allow himself to be sidelined by individuals who, in his view, lack an understanding of the NPP’s historical roots.

He dismissed attempts by younger members to challenge his stance, stating his critical role in the party’s formation.

“I am a member of the party and I will forever remain a member of the party. Nobody can push me out of that party,” he insisted, reinforcing his long-standing association with the NPP.

Despite holding on to his membership card, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe revealed he has ceased paying party dues.

He attributed this to disillusionment with what he described as the party’s transformation into a “money-making machine.”

According to him, financial contributions now feel wasted, likening it to “pouring water into a basket.”

There is growing concern among party veterans and supporters about the deviation from founding ideals of public service, transparency, and accountability.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s position shows a call for introspection within the party, as he urges a return to principles that once defined the political identity.

“In Governance there are ups and downs. Through the President J.A. Kufuor and President Nana Akufo Addo periods we succeeded at many and things with monumental and transformational achievements,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“Their achievements will stand the test of time,” he added.

President Kufuor, who led Ghana between 2001 and 2009, is credited with transforming the country, including boosting the private, delivering key infrastructure as well as implementing transformative social policies including the NHIS, free maternity, school feeding among many others.

On his part, President Akufo-Addo, who lest Ghana from 2017 and 2024, undertook an ambitious industrialiastikn and agriculture drive, expanded road and health infrastructure, as well as implemented the biggest social intervention programme in the history of the country, the Free Senior High School policy, which is giving free senior secondary education to millions of children across the country.

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to embrace their past mistakes and use them as stepping stones for growth and renewal ahead of future elections.

Addressing delegates at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, Dr Bawumia urged party faithful not to shy away from their shortcomings but rather confront them with honesty and resolve.

“We have also learnt useful lessons. We must remain resolute and consistent in doing the right thing and applying the lessons the next time. Mercy Johnson calls out Ghanaian TV station for allegedly airing her movie without consent

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mercy Johnson has called out Ghanaian TV station Blazing TV for allegedly airing her movie without her permission.

In an Instagram post on July 19, 2025, Mercy shared a screenshot of a message she received from a fan, alerting her that her film ‘The Firstborn’ was being shown on the station.

Reacting to the news, Mercy questioned how the station could broadcast her work without proper authorisation.

“How is this even okay? Blazing TV in Ghana is airing my movie The Firstborn without my consent. How does this even make sense? How? I am speechless at the audacity of it all,” she wrote.

Mercy Johnson joins a growing number of Nollywood filmmakers who have accused Ghanaian TV stations of airing their films without approval.

In April 2025, actress Bimbo Ademoye also raised concerns about Ghanaian channels broadcasting her films without consent. She tagged key Ghanaian officials, including the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, and the CEO of the National Film Authority, Kafui Danku, urging them to take action.

That same month, filmmaker Omoni Oboli criticised Ghanaian TV stations for uploading Nollywood films to YouTube without securing the necessary rights. She noted that while she appreciates her Ghanaian fans, it is disappointing that many Ghanaian TV stations rely on Nigerian content without respecting copyright laws.

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has admonished members of the New Patriotic Party to refrain from attacking one another.

Delivering a speech at the 2025 NPP National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, Dr Bawumia bemoaned the increasing internal attacks saying “an army that wants to win a battle must exercise discipline within its ranks”.

“Too often when we are yet to choose leaders, indiscipline, unacceptable language and unpardonable behavior become the order of the day. In the end when internal competitions are over, the attacks we would have launched on ourselves become the fodder and ammunition with which our opponents will attack us.”

“We experienced it in the 2024 campaign, and we should not let it happen again a second time. That is why I call on all kukrudites to stop the internal attacks now”, he advised.

Dr Bawunia further called on the party to refocus their energies by condemning the ills of the ruling National Democratic Congress.

“Let us rather focus on the attempt by the NDC to undermine our democracy and rule of law in trying to remove the Chief Justice! Let us focus on their clear intention to go after the Electoral Commissioner subsequently!”, he remarked.

Dr Bawumia added; “Let us focus on the violence and thuggery their hoodlums carried out in the recent Ablekuma election in the full view of the police and cameras.”

“I again call on the President to bring the perpetrators to book and to remind them that the elephant never forgets! No matter how long it takes, we will prosecute the perpetrators when we assume office in 2029 insha Allah.”

He concluded; “To the leadership of the party, I ask that you be firm and crack the whip so that discipline is maintained within our ranks. It is with discipline, humility, lessons learnt and pursuit of the common good for Ghana that we can become the refreshed party we desire.”

Ghana’s para-athletes are departed yesterday from Accra for Stellenbosch, South Africa, to participate in the 2025 edition of the GAPS program, scheduled from July 19 to 26.

The training camp is a key part of preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

The 2025 Commonwealth Wealth Federation GAPS program which stands for Gather, Adjust, Prepare, Sustain, is an initiative by Commonwealth Sport to support the development of para-athletes and coaches.

It offers specialized training, resources, and mentorship aimed at helping athletes reach their full potential ahead of major competitions.

This year’s Ghanaian contingent includes some of the nation’s most promising and accomplished para-athletes.

It includes Zinabu Issah, a para-athlete in the F57 women’s discus throw event. Zinabu recently made headlines in April 2025 after clinching a gold medal at the WPA Marrakech Grand Prix in Morocco.

Joining her is Haruna Tahiru, a versatile and experienced athlete who has been competing since 2017 and has racked up multiple medals in Para Powerlifting (107kg+) and Arm Wrestling both locally and internationally.

Supporting the athletes are two experienced coaches – Prince Nyarko and Obeng Yaw Patrick – who will guide the team through the intensive one-week training program in Stellenbosch.

Participation in the GAPS program is by the courtesy of the Ghana Olympic Committee which is a member of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and this has deepen the good relationship that exist between GOC and NPC Ghana to develop para sports which is a medal hopeful for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Ghana’s inclusion in the CGF GAPS program marks another step forward in the country’s efforts to empower athletes with disabilities and enhance their performance on the global stage.

Hope for peace as DR Congo and M23 rebels sign deal in Qatar

The Democratic Republic of Congo and M23 rebels have signed ceasefire deal in Qatar to end fighting between the warring sides.

Dubbed the Declaration of Principles, Saturday’s agreement seen by the BBC, says both sides must refrain from attacks, “hate propaganda” and “any attempt to seize by force new positions on the ground”.

The declaration is intended as a roadmap towards a permanent settlement.

The two sides agreed to implement the deal’s terms by July 29. A final peace deal is due by 18 August and must align with last month’s US-brokered deal between DR Congo and Rwanda, which denies accusations it backs M23.

Decades of conflict escalated earlier this year when M23 rebels seized control of large parts of the mineral-rich eastern DR Congo including the regional capital, Goma, the city of Bukavu and two airports.

The UN says thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of civilians forced from their homes following since. The M23 disputes the figures, saying fewer than 1,000 people have died.

DR Congo spokesperson Patrick Muyaya said the deal took the government’s “red line” into account – including the “non-negotiable withdrawal” of the M23 from occupied areas.

But in a video posted on X, M23 negotiator Benjamin Mbonimpa said the deal did not mention such a pull-out.

It is the first direct accord between the two sides since the rebels launched their offensive at the turn of the year.

Qatar said negotiations were set to continue.

The African Union Commission called the declaration a “milestone” in lasting peace efforts and security in the region.

The declaration also outlines a commitment to reinstating state authority in eastern DR Congo.

This is the latest in a long line of failed peace deals in the region.

One of the main players in today’s conflict – the M23 rebels – emerged from a failed peace deal 16 years ago that never delivered on demobilisation.

In March, DR Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame met in Qatar and both called for an immediate ceasefire.

The following month, DR Congo and M23 group agreed to a ceasefire facilitated by Qatar, but fighting continued on the ground.

The Washington deal, which came about in June, has been met with widespread criticism as a key incentive for the US’ intervention is access to the DR Congo’s vast mineral wealth. President Trump boasted of this feat.

There has been talk of Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame going to Washington to meet Trump together, though no date has been fixed.

“I’m Not Here to Please Anybody” – Forestry Boss Fires Back at NDC Critics

0

Dr. Hugh C.A. Brown, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, has responded to internal criticism by stating he is not at the Commission to serve any political interest as reported by MyNewsGH.

His remarks follow growing tensions among some pro-NDC staff who allege bias and dissatisfaction with the direction of the Commission.

Insiders say Dr. Brown has firmly rejected claims of partisanship, emphasizing that his mandate is strictly professional.

“I’m not here to please anybody,” he is reported to have said, insisting that his appointment was based on merit rather than politics.

Dr. Brown, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki and has over three decades of experience in forest management, was appointed Deputy CEO in 2022 by President Akufo-Addo.

His subsequent elevation to Acting CEO by President John Mahama has reportedly sparked unease within NDC ranks, with some describing the move as “strange and shocking.”

Concerns have also been raised over forest entry permits allegedly issued under his watch.

Documents reviewed by MyNewsGh indicate that mining permits bearing Dr. Brown’s signature were granted to companies such as FJ Minerals Limited and Amby Limited in March 2024, prior to his official confirmation as Acting CEO.

Environmental activists have voiced alarm over the Commission’s permit processes, citing the ongoing damage to protected reserves from illegal mining and logging.

Despite these concerns, the Commission has not issued any official response.

Dr. Brown maintains that his focus remains on protecting Ghana’s forests and ensuring sustainability within the sector, not on political allegiances.

Grant large-scale mining concessions to Ghanaians – Asantehene advocates

0

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has advocated for Ghanaians to own large-scale mining concessions Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has advocated for Ghanaians to own large-scale mining concessions

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has underscored the need for Ghanaians to be granted large-scale mining concessions as given to foreign firms.

This, he explained, would control repatriation of profits accrued form the mining sector and enable more Ghanaians with technical expertise to gain employment to bolster the economy for national development.

In a video on social media platform X, Otumfuo advocated that Ghanaians must be given priority if any mining concession is to be granted so that they [Ghanaians] can partner other foreign firms.

This, he said, would ensure that greater parts of profit gained from large-scale mining activities would not be repatriated but would remain in the country as done elsewhere.

He mentioned, for instance, that “If Obuasi was given to Ghanaians, many of the youth who have acquired knowledge on mining engineering would have been employed to work there”.

“Western Region, Western North are all areas where gold is found. Can’t we help them to form companies and go out to look for funds to come and establish there so that the local people can also work?”. He asked.

He emphasised the need to task the Geological Survey Department and the Minerals Commission to undertake an aggressive survey which will indicate exactly where the gold deposits are located.

This way, he said, would enable the country to derive maximum benefits from its rich mineral resources and also improve equity that would benefit the local people and the country at large.

In his views, the need for Ghanaians to be given mining concession to do large-scale mining must be of paramount interest to all Ghanaians and therefore, called on the Constitutional Review Committee to give this a consideration.

According to him, the Constitutional Review Committee must not hesitate to amend existing provisions in the constitution to ensure that Ghanaians would be given priority when granting large-scale mining concessions.

We’re happy you’re resetting to help Mahama rebuild Ghana – NDC to NPP

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed what it describes as a “reset” within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing it as a positive development for national unity and progress.

According to Ludwig Hlodze, the NDC’s Director of Logistics and Protocol, the move reflects a renewed focus on constructive engagement—one that aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda to rebuild Ghana.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, July 19, Hlodze highlighted the importance of political parties reassessing their strategies for the greater good of the nation. He expressed optimism about the NPP’s decision to do so.

“The country Ghana is going through a reset process. It is very important that we as political parties reset our ideas, policies, and programmes,” he stated.

“That is why we are happy that the biggest opposition party in our country is doing exactly that—to reset and play their role with constructive criticism to support the nation builder, John Mahama, to rebuild the Ghana we all want.”

The NPP’s conference, held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” has drawn widespread attention as a moment of introspection and reform following the party’s 2024 electoral loss.

Ghanaians must see the lessons we have learnt – Bawumia

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that it is extremely important for Ghanaians to genuinely see lessons the NPP has learnt, as it reorganises the party for the future.

Addressing the 2025 National Delegates Conference of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia said the real objective of the party’s reorganisation is not only to be able to win elections, but also to be better placed to deliver better governance to the people, adding that its important for the lessons learnt to be manifest to Ghanaians.

“We must be consistent in pursuance of our effort to address not just the challenges within but more importantly the challenges that bedevil our motherland,” he said.

“We have also learned useful lessons in how to improve some things in the future. We must remain resolute and consistent in doing the right things again and in applying the lessons the next time.”

Stop internal attacks now – Bawumia tells NPP supporters

0

The 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party supporters to put an end to internal attacks and divisions, warning that such actions only weaken the party’s unity and electoral prospects.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, Dr. Bawumia addressed concerns about disunity within the party following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“Too often, when we are yet to choose our leaders, indiscipline, unacceptable language, and unpardonable behaviour become the order of the day. In the end, when internal competitions are over, the attacks we have launched on ourselves become further ammunition which our opponents use against us,” he observed.

He noted that such internal conflicts negatively impacted the party during the 2024 campaign and cautioned against repeating the same mistakes.

“In the end, when internal competitions are over, the attacks we have launched on ourselves become further ammunition which our opponents use against us. We experienced it in the 2024 campaign, and we should not let it happen again a second time. This is why I call on all ‘krokodites’ to stop internal attacks now. Let’s stop the internal attacks now,” he advised.

The conference brought together party leaders and grassroots members to discuss the party’s future direction and strategies for rebuilding ahead of the next election cycle.

NPP Will Return in 2028 – Justin Kodua slams NDC over LGBTQ+ silence and job losses

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has launched a scathing attack on the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the administration of failing to deliver on its promises.

He questioned the government’s commitment to good governance, citing rising economic hardship, the worsening menace of illegal mining (galamsey), and political victimisation through mass dismissals in public institutions.

“Ghanaians are asking questions. Mr President, you promised to reset the country, but your reset has turned into mass termination of appointments. Is that your 24-hour economy?” he queried.

Addressing party faithful at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Accra today, Mr Frimpong criticised President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as a deafening silence on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill and for allowing illegal mining to thrive, even in his own constituency, Bole Bamboi.

“You made noise about galamsey under our government, but today, galamsey is everywhere—even in your backyard,” he added.

The General Secretary reaffirmed the NPP’s readiness to return to power in 2028. However, he stressed the importance of discipline within the party, warning aspirants against premature campaigning.

“Until nominations are officially opened, no one has the right to campaign. Anyone who wants to lead this party must respect its structures and authority,” he said.

He added that personal ambition must never supersede the collective interest of the NPP.

The 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of political witchhunt claiming the NDC is actively working to undermine Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking to delegates at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference on July 19, 2025, Dr Bawumia charged party members to shift their focus to what he described as “dangerous” moves by the NDC that threaten the rule of law.

“Let us rather focus on the attempt by the NDC to undermine our democracy and rule of law in trying to remove the Chief Justice,” he said.

According to him, the NDC’s actions are part of a broader agenda that includes targeting the Electoral Commissioner next.

“Let us focus on their clear intention to go after the Electoral Commissioner subsequently,” he added.

He also condemned acts of violence during the Ablekuma by-election, stating that the thuggery was witnessed openly by both the police and the media.

“Let us focus on the violence and thuggery their hoodlums carried out in the recent Ablekuma election in full view of the police and cameras,” he charged.

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has vowed to prosecute persons involved in the Ablekuma North election violence if he wins power in the 2028.

According to him, the thuggery that was carried out in the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections undermines the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.

The former Vice President called on President John Dramani Mahama to take swift action against the perpetrators to bring them to justice and deter others.

He warned that if President Mahama does not take stringent action against those involved, he would prosecute the perpetrators if the NPP wins power in the 2028 general elections.

“Let us focus on the violence and thuggery via hoodlums carried out in the recent Ablekuma elections in full view of the police and cameras. I again call on His Excellency the President [Mahama] to bring the perpetrators to book and remind them that the elephant never forgets.

“No matter how long it takes, we will prosecute the perpetrators when we assume office in 2029, insha Allah,” he said during the 2025 NPP National Delegates Conference.

President Mahama calls for major infrastructure investment to unlock AfCFTA potential

President John Dramani Mahama has called for significant investment in infrastructure to fully realise the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

In a meeting with AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene at the Jubilee House, President Mahama emphasised that without robust transport and digital infrastructure, the continent’s vision of economic integration will remain unattainable.

“To truly unlock the full potential of the AfCFTA Agreement, our continent needs massive investment in infrastructure. From robust transportation networks, such as roads and rail, to seamless digital connectivity, these are the arteries of trade,” President Mahama said in a Facebook post on July 19, 2025, following the meeting.

He further cautioned that inadequate connections across the continent continue to impede the efficient exchange of goods and services, thereby slowing Africa’s progress toward regional integration and sustainable development.

“The AU-NEPAD vision calls for proactive steps to open up our economies. Without reliable links between our nations, trade cannot flourish,” he added.

President Mahama highlighted the Abidjan–Lagos corridor as a prime example of how targeted infrastructure investment could transform commerce in the region.

He proposed extending the corridor to Dakar, arguing that it would create a seamless trade route and significantly boost intra-African commerce.

“Imagine the impact of investing in crucial corridors like the Abidjan–Lagos route and extending it to Dakar, it would be a game-changer,” he said.

Reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to the AfCFTA agenda, President Mahama said the country remains proud to host the AfCFTA Secretariat and will continue to support its work.

“I reaffirmed my unwavering commitment to facilitating the work of the Secretariat. Ghana will always stand with the vision of a united, prosperous Africa through trade,” he concluded.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a landmark initiative that seeks to create a single market for goods and services across the continent, with the goal of boosting intra-African trade and accelerating economic development. Established under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, the AfCFTA officially entered into force in 2019 and now encompasses the majority of African nations.

Police believe holiday deaths were accidental

The two friends drown in a swimming pool while on holiday in Portugal The two friends drown in a swimming pool while on holiday in Portugal

Portuguese police said they were not treating the deaths of two British men at a hotel swimming pool as suspicious, as a sister claimed her brother died while “trying to save” his best friend’s life.

King Edonmi, 29, and Mo Liasu, 27, died less than 24 hours after arriving on holiday in Albufeira. The men, from Ipswich, are believed to have drowned on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Policia Judiciaria, Portugal’s criminal investigation police, said inquiries so far had shown “no evidence of criminal activity”.

Mr Edonmi’s sister, Kemi, paid tribute to the pair online and dispelled local reports that the men had been drinking.

In a statement, police in Portugal said: “The inspection of the scene revealed no evidence of criminal activity.

“Witnesses to the events were interviewed, confirming the investigation’s belief that it was an accident.”

The Foreign Office said it had been supporting the families involved and coordinating with Portuguese authorities.

Kemi Edonmi wrote online: “My best friend is really gone. Rest in peace to my big brother and his best friend Mo, we love you and will never forget you both.

“The whole family is comforted by the fact that King died in Christ.

“From Jesus – For Jesus – Back to Jesus. We shall all meet again.”

She added that “my brother died trying to save his friend’s life”.

Ms Edonmi criticised speculation that the men had been drinking, writing: “My brother and Mo do not drink and were not intoxicated at the time of the incident.

“Articles with false information and insensitive comments don’t know the pain they’re causing the people closest to King and Mo.”

In the UK, candles, flowers and tealights spelling out the men’s names have been laid near flats on Ipswich Waterfront.

A fundraising page set up to help pay for the repatriation of their bodies has been closed after it passed £25,000.

A joint statement from the families of both men said: “We would like to extend our deepest and most sincere thanks to every single person who donated, shared and supported us during this heart-breaking time.

“Because of your incredible generosity, preparations have now been made to bring our beloved King and Mo home, so they may be laid to rest with the love, dignity and peace they so deeply deserve.”

Thanking people for their support, the statement continues: “The parents of King and Mo have been profoundly moved by the outpouring of love and support from the community.”

Accra, July 19, GNA – Members of the New Patriotic Party have accepted the proposed amendment to expand the base of delegates who elect the party’s presidential candidate by 40 per cent.

The proposed amendment was accepted at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday.

The rest are all card-bearing ministers and deputy ministers, MMDCEs, 15 delegates from every external branch, founding members, and three representatives each from special organs of the party.

Over 5,500 delegates are attending the Conference in Accra to vote on proposed amendments to the party’s constitution.

The event, on the theme: “Rebuilding Together with our Values,” seeks to promote unity and harmony within the party and work together to recapture power in 2028.

Ghanaians want us back, let’s unite to rescue them – Kodua to NPP

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has issued a rallying call to party members, urging unity and discipline as the party seeks to reposition itself as a credible alternative to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing delegates at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference on Saturday July 19, he expressed confidence that many Ghanaians are ready to return the NPP to power — but only if the party can present a united and responsible front.

“Ghanaians are looking for alternatives and Ghanaians want to come back to NPP,” he said, adding “Ghanaians know that our government offered better solutions to their problems.”

However, he cautioned that public confidence in the party depends heavily on how it conducts itself in opposition stressing that internal divisions, unnecessary conflicts, and personal agendas must be set aside in favor of collective action.

“At the end of the day, they want to vote for an opposition party that is ready for power. Therefore, actions and inactions that seek to divide us, that bring acrimony and tension, need to be relegated,” Kodua stated.

He urged party members to rise above factionalism and focus on the bigger picture—rescuing Ghanaians from what he described as the hardship and mismanagement under the current administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.

“We must show Ghanaians that we are a proper, responsible, and viable opposition party that will rescue them from the misery they are going through under the watch of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government,” he added.

NDC is a failure, Ghana deserves better – Afenyo-Markin

0

Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has described the current government, led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as a complete failure, asserting that only the New Patriotic Party (NPP) can offer Ghanaians a better standard of living.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, July 19, Afenyo-Markin stated, “Ghana is now paying the price for trusting the NDC’s hollow promises.”

He criticized the NDC government, saying its betrayal has become evident just months into power.

He added that fuel levies have increased pump prices, worsening the hardship of ordinary Ghanaians, and efforts to end illegal mining (galamsey) have failed.

“Their vow to reset our nation has become a brazen assault on our judicial, starting with a shameful vilification of our Chief Justice. Their promise of change, a sham, with schemes afoot to funnel our mineral wealth to their cronies,” he said.

“Worst of all, their questionable Ablekuma rerun, where NDC-affiliated attacks have tired our candidates, Nana Ekua Afriyie, former MP Hawa Koomson, and journalists expose their willingness to trample democracy with violence. The message is clear. NDC is a failure. Ghana deserves better.”

Internal rift

He acknowledged that the NPP’s 2024 defeat revealed internal divisions and a weak message, but emphasized that it should not be seen as the end. Instead, it should serve as a turning point—a chance to transform disappointment into renewal and purpose.

“Fellow patriots, look around us this very afternoon. Look at the divisions that have sprouted like weeds since our defeat. We cannot, we must not allow 2024 to become the year that destroyed the NPP.”

“From this moment, we speak with one voice. We move with one resolve. We are not Achem, Ashanti, Fante, Mamprushi, Gonja, Ga or Ewe. We are MPP. We are not north or south. We are Ghana first,” he stressed.

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what it calls a much-needed “reset” in the party’s direction and values, describing it as a positive step toward building national consensus and development.

NPP Delegates Congress: End hate campaigns, party sabotage — Afenyo-Markin

0

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called for an end to hate campaigns and internal sabotage within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging unity and renewal as the party navigates a new phase.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference today in Accra, he cautioned that such negative actions could undermine the party’s cohesion and derail its progress.

He emphasised the need to rebrand the party through improved performance and a demonstration of strong character.

“We must rebuild together, brick by brick, anchored in our values and in the unshakeable belief that no individual is bigger than the NPP. This belief must reflect our tone, our language, our strategy, and, most importantly, our posture towards one another,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated.

The conference is being held on the theme: “Rebranding Together with Our Values.”

Not broken

Addressing the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, Mr Afenyo-Markin insisted that the party was not broken, but rather being tested.

“We are at a critical juncture as a party, not because our tradition is broken, but because it is being tested,” he said.

He urged members not to allow present challenges to cloud the party’s vision or fragment its ranks.

The Minority Leader said the NPP was in a period of transition and repositioning, and stressed the need to rebuild trust, reconnect with grassroots supporters, and effectively communicate the party’s values while engaging the Ghanaian public with bold, forward-looking ideas.

Mr Afenyo-Markin underscored that the NPP was more than just a political organisation—it was a tradition shaped by the sacrifices and convictions of patriots who believed in liberty, human dignity, the rule of law, and the potential of every Ghanaian.

He said these values, driven by private sector participation, should guide the party’s future direction.

He also reaffirmed the NPP’s vision of building a nation where every Ghanaian, regardless of background, could succeed through merit, hard work, and innovation.

“Our vision of a property-owning democracy has evolved beyond land or housing to mean giving every citizen a stake in national progress through education, healthcare, financial inclusion, and decent jobs,” he noted.

“Every child and youth must be equipped with the skills, values, confidence, and opportunity to be entrepreneurial or to climb the professional career ladder,” he added.

Stop the internal attacks and focus on the ills of the NDC – Bawumia urges NPP members

0

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to curb incessant internal attacks on members of the party and rather focus their attention on the ills of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he said is undermining the country’s democracy.

Addressing party delegates at the 2025 NPP National Delegates Conference in Accra, Dr. Bawumia bemoaned the increasing internal attacks, which he said, often characterise the party whenever it is about to choose its leaders, and hands over arsenal to the NPP’s main opponent.

“An army that wants to win a battle must exercise discipline within its ranks,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“Too often, when we are yet to choose leaders, indiscipline, unacceptable language, and unpardonable behavior become the order of the day. In the end, when internal competitions are over, the attacks we would have launched on ourselves become the fodder and ammunition with which our opponents will attack us.”

“We experienced it in the 2024 campaign, and we should not let it happen again a second time. That is why I call on all kukrudites to “Stop the internal attacks now.”

Dr. Bawunia called for the energy to be channeled to expose the governing NDC on their many acts, which he condemned.

“Let us rather focus on the attempt by the NDC to undermine our democracy and the rule of law in trying to remove the Chief Justice. Let us focus on their clear intention to go after the Electoral Commissioner subsequently.”

“Let us focus on the violence and thuggery their hoodlums carried out in the recent Ablekuma election in the full view of the police and cameras.”

“I again call on the President to bring the perpetrators to book and to remind them that the elephant never forgets. No matter how long it takes, we will prosecute the perpetrators when we assume office in 2029, insha Allah.”

“To the leadership of the party, I ask that you be firm and crack the whip so that discipline is maintained within our ranks. It is with discipline, humility, lessons learnt and pursuit of the common good for Ghana that we can become the refreshed party we desire.”

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind a common purpose and reconnect with the party’s grassroots as it charts a new path forward.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of unity, discipline, and a renewed sense of purpose within the party.

He said the NPP is not a broken party despite its defeat in the 2024 general election.

He stressed the need for the party to rebrand itself with results and strong character, warning that internal divisions have been costly.

“Let’s move with one voice. We’re in a season that demands sober reflection and radical unity. This is a time to rebuild, reconnect with the grassroots, re-engage with the base and reconnect with Ghanaians with a bold new vision for the future. With unity, we become a force; unity doesn’t mean uniformity, but loyalty to a shared purpose.

“We must rebrand ourselves with better results and strong character. We must rebuild together, anchored in our values that no individual is bigger than the NPP, and that belief must reflect our language, tone, strategy and posture towards one another. Internal discord, suspicions, and disunity have cost us. We made mistakes, but we’re not a broken party; we’re only a battle-tested party. We’re not a party of despair. Let’s end hate campaigns. We must reclaim the spirit of unity, discipline and shared purpose.”

The National Delegates Conference brought together key party members from across the country as part of efforts to restructure and reposition the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stressed the significance and power of unity in rebuilding the New Patriotic Party.

In an address to party delegates at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Dr Bawumia said the rebuilding effort of the party can only be solidified if the party is united.

“The task ahead of us is one that we have to conduct with diligence and measure.”

“In times like this, we should be focussed on strengthening our bonds of unity and reinvesting in the ties that bind us. Our foundation and our strength has always been in building a united party,” Dr Bawumia advised.

He added that the NPP has, over the years, “built the broadest coalition of citizens” to not just win elections but also deliver effective governance.

“We have been the party that has over the years offered hope to the largest diversity of our peoples. Under our tent, it has not mattered where you come from (Whether you are a Sefwi, Fante, Ewe, Ashanti, Ga-Dangbe  Krobo, Dagomba, Wala, Dagarti, Konkomba, Frafra or Mamprusi. It has not mattered what religion you practice (Whether you are a Christian, Muslim or a traditional African religious practitioner). It has not mattered whether you are rich or poor or whether you are formally educated or not.”

“This is why the root of our party resulted from an amalgamation of parties from different parts of Ghana and different interest groups.”

Dr Bawumia reminded the delegates of the NPP’s tradition emphasising the party which was initially called United Party was formed through an amalgation of ethnic groups across the country and political parties.

Among the political parties he mentioned as member of the NPP’s United Party were: the National Liberation Movement (NLM) – dominant in Ashanti Region,

Northern People’s Party (NPP) – which represented the Northern Territories, Muslim Association Party (MAP) which had support in Muslim communities.

He continued the Anlo Youth Organisation (AYO), based in the Volta Region, Ga Shifimokpee which represented Ga interests in the Greater Accra Region, Togoland Congress which focused on British Togoland interests

and the Federation of Youth Organisation.

“It is clear therefore that the bonds of unity in diversity has been our lifeblood and our foundation. Now more than ever we must refresh them and desist from any language, character or actions that divide us.”

“With unity and consistency, we can regain the trust of Ghanaians. If we are fractured and at each others throats, none of us can cross over and lead us to fulfill this party’s purpose. Tribalism and religious bigotry pose an existential threat and should have no place in the New Patriotic Party.”

The Car Rental Association of Ghana (CRAG) has appealed to government for GH¢10 million support to revitalise operations and enhance efficiency in the sector.

The Association said the support should include soft loans, tax incentives, import duty waivers for electric vehicles, VAT reliefs, and a 30 per cent corporate tax rebate for companies with over 40 per cent green fleets to boost tourism and transport services.

Michael Sarpong, President of CRAG, made the appeal during a courtesy call on Madam Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, in Accra on Tuesday.

He said CRAG, established in 1998, faces operational challenges such as weak regulation, unsafe vehicles, and poor driving standards, which contribute to high accident rates.

Sarpong urged the Minister to support mandatory training and certification for car renters to improve road safety and build tourist confidence.

He said the Association is transitioning to a green fleet initiative and called for government incentives to support the adoption of electric vehicles, noting that many guests already use them.

Sarpong disclosed that CRAG plans to optimise its operations through digital integration and a smart mobility platform to improve transparency and efficiency.

He said the Association’s broader vision would increase tax revenue through standardised regulation, reduce fuel imports, and minimise environmental pollution.

The Minister commended CRAG for supporting tourism development and pledged to engage the Ministry of Finance and other relevant agencies to address their concerns.

She said the Association played a vital role in job creation within the tourism ecosystem and promised to work with sector agencies to improve its operations.

Madam Gomashie urged CRAG to brand their vehicles with Ghana’s tourist sites to enhance visibility and promote national tourism.

She said that would promote Ghana’s tourism globally, while enhancing business growth and increasing national revenue.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has converged at the University of Ghana Stadium for its highly anticipated National Delegates Conference.

More than 5,500 delegates from across the country are expected to participate in this crucial gathering, aimed at charting a new course for the party following its significant defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” the conference signals a moment of reflection and a call to realign with the party’s founding principles.

At the heart of the proceedings is the consideration of 59 proposed amendments to the NPP’s constitution. These proposals seek to reshape the party’s internal structures, strengthen grassroots mobilisation, and refine its democratic processes—strategies seen as vital to positioning the party for a comeback in the 2028 elections.

Accra, July 19, GNA – Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has rallied members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to “find ways to reconcile” after the Party’s heavy defeat in the 2024 General Election.

Acknowledging that the path had not been easy for the NPP, he encouraged party members to remain proud in their progress, having won two successive elections in 2016 and 2020.

In a speech read on his behalf by Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the Chief of Staff under his regime, at the Party’s National Delegates Conference in Accra, President Akufo-Addo rallied the Party to prioritise unity.

“Conference must reflect that ours is not just a political party but a family,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo urged the Party to actively involve the youth in the rebuilding agenda and tap into their positive energies to restore the party on the path to recapture power.

Over 5,500 delegates are attending the Conference in Accra to vote on proposed amendments to the party’s constitution.

The conference aims to deliberate on key reforms, including the potential abolition of the Special Electoral College system used to elect the party’s presidential candidate.

NDC is a failure, Ghana deserves better

0

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has failed to deliver on its lofty campaign promises and has instead worsened the living conditions of ordinary Ghanaians.

Speaking at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, July 19, he noted that “The NDC’s betrayal is glaring. New levies on fuel have sparked pump prices, crashing ordinary Ghanaians.”

He criticised the NDC’s handling of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, accusing the government of paying lip service to a problem it publicly declared a crisis.

“Their pledge to end galamsey has crashed into chaos. The president calls it a national emergency, yet refuses to declare a state of emergency,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He also condemned what he described as dangerous attacks on the judiciary by the ruling party saying “They have vowed to reset our nation, but it has become a brazen assault on our judiciary—starting with the shameful vilification of our Chief Justice,” he stated.

The Minority Leader alleged that the NDC was scheming to exploit Ghana’s mineral resources for political purposes.

“Their promise of change is a sham, with schemes afoot to funnel our mineral wealth to their cronies,” he charged.

Touching on the recent Ablekuma North by-election rerun, Afenyo-Markin claimed it was marred by acts of violence carried out by individuals linked to the NDC.

“Worst of all, the questionable Ablekuma North rerun where NDC-affiliated thugs attacked our candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former MP Hawa Koomson,” he added.

The Minority Leader went on delivering a blunt assessment of the NDC’s leadership insisting “The message is clear—NDC is a failure, Ghana deserves better.”
