WAGPA eyes pipeline expansion in bid to anchor regional gas market

0

The West African Gas Pipeline Authority (WAGPA) The West African Gas Pipeline Authority (WAGPA)

he West African Gas Pipeline Authority (WAGPA) has signalled a potential expansion of the US$1billion infrastructure beyond its current four-nation configuration.

This is expected position the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) as the lynchpin of a broader regional gas market.

At the 2025 West Africa Gas Summit (WAGS) in Accra, WAGPA Director-General Chafari Kanya Hanawa said the 678-kilometre pipeline currently linking Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana is no longer just a conduit for natural gas, but also the backbone of a regionally integrated energy economy.

“We see the WAGP not just as infrastructure but also a strategic asset in our transition toward a gas-powered regional economy,” Hanawa said. However, she noted that a backbone alone is not enough.

In her address, Hanawa hinted at plans to extend the pipeline to landlocked countries and new coastal markets, describing the current regional framework as a “launchpad” for broader interconnection.

While no specific countries were named, she emphasised that deeper regional cooperation and alignment of national strategies with regional ambitions would be critical to that future.

Constructed under a 2003 treaty, the WAGP is sub-Saharan Africa’s first cross-border natural gas transmission system – supplying up to 5 billion cubic metres of Nigerian gas annually to downstream markets. Its capacity supports as much as 3,000 megawatts of power generation, helping recipient countries displace costlier and dirtier fuels.

WAGPA’s shift toward expansion comes as African economies explore intra-continental energy integration under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.

The pipeline’s operation is managed by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), a joint venture involving Chevron, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Shell and others. WAGPA serves as the intergovernmental regulator representing the four member-states’ interests.

While expansion details remain scant, Hanawa confirmed that WAGPA has signed a three-year strategic partnership with The Gas Consortium to support the annual summit and promote public-private engagement.

“This is not just a sponsorship,” she said. “It is a commitment to building a lasting platform for unlocking West Africa’s gas potential.”

The summit’s agenda also focused on how gas infrastructure can catalyse industrial development, with Hanawa emphasising the need for agile regulatory reforms to attract investment. “The goal is not just compliance. The goal is to attract capital, drive down costs and create certainty for investors and end-users – especially in the industrial sector,” she said.

She urged stakeholders to think beyond existing geographies and consider how natural gas can reach inland nations and new sectors through infrastructure investments and knowledge-sharing.

“Regionalisation of gas is not a one-off achievement. It’s a process that requires bold thinking and inclusive models,” she said.

Zambian ex-president’s family settle funeral row with government

Zambia's former President Edgar Lungu died at the age of 68 in South Africa Zambia’s former President Edgar Lungu died at the age of 68 in South Africa

After days of uncertainty and negotiations, the funeral arrangements for Zambia’s former president have been finalised.

Edgar Lungu, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, died 11 days ago in South Africa where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

According to his family, he had left instructions that his political rival and current President Hakainde Hichilema “should not come anywhere near his body”.

But a spokesperson for the Lungu family confirmed that an agreement had been reached with the government that allowed for Hichilema to preside over a state funeral next Sunday.

The row caused consternation among some in Zambia with people left wondering how they should mourn their former leader.

After days of talks, the Lungu family and the government have agreed that:

The former president’s body will be flown to the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on Wednesday on a private charter plane On arrival at the airport, the body will be received by the family and then there will be full military honours It will then be transported to Lungu’s residence in Lusaka where it will lie in state For three days, starting on Thursday, it will be taken to a conference centre in the capital where the public can pay their respects A state funeral will be held on Sunday 22 June with official mourning ending the following day. The former president will be buried next Monday but it is not yet clear whether he will be interred at the official presidential burial grounds or at his residence.

At a joint press briefing in South Africa, Lungu family spokesperson Makebi Zulu, sitting alongside Secretary to Zambia’s Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, said the family apologised “for the inconvenience and pain that the protracted negotiations may have caused but we were doing our best to honour the former president’s personal wishes”.

Mr Zulu also said that the family was proceeding on the basis that the government would “not deviate from our agreement”.

Speaking for the government, Mr Kangwa appealed for unity and thanked Zambians for their patience “during this difficult time”.

After six years as head state, Lungu lost the 2021 election to Hichilema by a large margin.

After that defeat he stepped back from politics but later returned to the fray.

He had ambitions to vie for the presidency again but at the end of last year the Constitutional Court barred him from running, ruling that he had already served the maximum two terms allowed by law.

Despite his disqualification from the presidential election, he remained hugely influential in Zambian politics and did not hold back in his criticism of his successor.

Last year, Lungu complained of police harassment and accused the authorities of effectively putting him under house arrest. He also said he had been prevented from leaving the country. The government denied both accusations.

Kwaku Manu Not a True Ashanti, Afrifa Rightfully Is

0

A viral clip has captured Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, addressing a simmering dispute between actor Kwaku Manu and media personality Okatakyie Afrifa. In the footage, which has been viewed widely across social platforms, Otumfuo makes a pointed distinction: Kwaku Manu, despite his public persona, does not trace his lineage to the Asante royal clan, whereas Okatakyie Afrifa’s heritage is firmly rooted in the Ashanti heartland .

Kwaku Manu first ignited controversy when, in a now-viral recording, he challenged Okatakyie Afrifa over perceived slights and political affiliations, even insinuating a claim to Ashanti identity that many found unsubstantiated. His remarks prompted Afrifa to respond sharply, accusing Manu of opportunism and of leveraging traditional ties for personal gain . The exchange soon drew the attention of the Manhyia Palace, setting the stage for a rare royal intervention.

Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah is not merely a social commentator; he hails from Asante Agona, a lineage recognised by the council of elders and documented in traditional records. Born into a family with deep roots in Bomfa and educated in both Kumasi and Accra, Afrifa has consistently upheld the values of his forebears. His status as a bona fide Ashanti is affirmed by oral history and community testimony, underscoring a heritage passed down through generations .

In the decisive moment captured on video, Otumfuo underscored that Ashanti identity is determined by matrilineal descent and formal recognition by the royal court. “While Kwaku Manu may entertain us with his craft, his blood does not flow from the Golden Stool,” the Asantehene declared, “Okatakyie Afrifa, on the other hand, carries the legacy of our ancestors in his veins.” The monarch’s words have been met with widespread support on social media, where commentators praise his commitment to preserving Asante lineage and call for respect of traditional protocols .

Attorney General will not trade law for pressure – Srem Sai

0

Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, has defended the prosecutorial approach under his boss, Dr. Dominic Ayine, insisting that the new Attorney General will not bow to political or public pressure in the pursuit of justice.

Speaking on JoyNews’ , Dr. Srem Sai declared that Dr. Ayine “will not trade anything for the position of the law.”

In a wide-ranging conversation, the Deputy AG said he accepted his appointment with a clear understanding of the weight of public expectation.

“I felt the weight of expectation of Ghanaians upon my appointment,” he said. “But one thing that made me happy about this was my boss.”

Dr. Srem Sai described Dr. Ayine as a man of deep principle and legal discipline.

“I have known him for several years since law school. He taught me constitutional law, administrative law and natural resource law. He is a very diligent man.”

He stressed that Dr. Ayine will never take a case to court unless the evidence is solid.

“He will not persecute anybody,” he said.
“He will not go to court unless he has sufficient evidence to convince himself that prosecution may be successful. That’s not to say he expects a conviction every time, but at least he believes there is a strong case.”

Dr. Srem Sai said this legal discipline gives him confidence.

“So with that guidance, or the person who is leading the Attorney General’s department, I became very comfortable with the appointment.”

He admitted that the work has been challenging.

“So far, it’s not been easy,” he said. “And I’m sure you know and you can see from my eyes — I hardly sleep.”

His remarks come amid growing debate over whether recent high-profile prosecutions are politically motivated.

Dr. Srem Sai dismissed those concerns and emphasised that the Attorney General’s office is focused on legality, not vendetta.

“He is not going to bend the law for anybody. And he is not going to pursue a case because of media pressure or noise.”

He insisted that decisions at the Attorney General’s Department are guided by the law and not public opinion.

“What we do is look at the law and the evidence. That is our threshold. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Asked whether he felt under pressure due to public scrutiny, Dr. Srem Sai was candid.

“Yes, we are under the pressure of responsibility.”

He said the public must have faith in the system.

“We are not going to be swayed by the politics. We are going to do what the law says. That’s our oath.”

How a public university submitted list of non-existent students – NSA boss details

0

Felix Gyamfi is the Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA) Felix Gyamfi is the Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA)

The Director General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Felix Gyamfi, has disclosed further damning details regarding payroll fraud within the National Service Scheme, following the implication of 12 former officials.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on June 15, 2025, Gyamfi stated that a well-known public university had participated in the NSS payroll fraud by submitting a list of students who did not exist within the institution.

According to him, that particular institution was heavily involved in the malfeasance but refrained from revealing its name due to potential legal implications.

“I could say to you today that there’s a particular university in Ghana where lots of the malfeasance occurred under their watch more than anywhere else but because when I mention it, it would have legal implications and it would go against the credibility of the university and probably tomorrow I’ll be asked to [sic] I would have told you. I’m not going to mention the name because of it,” he said.

When asked by the host about the number of ghost names submitted by the university, Gyamfi did not specify a figure but stated that the names were part of a list of nonexistent individuals that had been deleted from the system.

He also referenced recorded cases in the NSS payroll fraud, including instances where octogenarians and Kenyans were found on the payroll.

“They are probably the list that we have to delete. You remember the Media Foundation for West Africa, Suleiman Braimah mentioned that there are people from Kenya, 83-year-old women and men were doing national service, that was part of those lists. So, the system can detect,” he continued.

Gyamfi noted that the authority has already taken the necessary actions regarding the institution.

However, he added that if the Attorney General decides to pursue prosecution, the authority will not hesitate to disclose the name of the institution.

“There are issues that we could deal with administratively, also to protect the sanctity of an otherwise very viable public institution. We have taken the action that we have to take. We want to leave it like that.

“If at any point in time the National Service Board or the Attorney General is interested in the matter, we will give it out there for them to act on that,” he said.

He added, “So, I’m just saying that to prove to you that we could detect if anything untoward is coming from anywhere. Every aspect of the process is transparent. Of all the universities in Ghana, I have a list that I put out and then you would see. So, for even the universities that have submitted lists of people and all that, there are numbers attached to it. We could trace to districts and regions where this occurred and all that.”

Ghana closes Tehran Embassy, evacuates citizens as Middle East conflict escalates

0

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the immediate evacuation of Ghanaians living in Iran due to heightened tensions between Israel and Iran.

In a Facebook post on Monday, June 16, 2025, the Minister said the Mahama administration has taken the decision in the interest of safeguarding Ghanaian lives as the conflict intensifies.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” he stated.

As part of the evacuation, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect, and all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other nationals are being relocated through land borders.

“We are equally keenly following developments in Israel and will advise shortly,” the Minister added.

“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department.”

Mr. Ablakwa assured that the government is committed to the safety of its citizens and that “no effort will be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way.”

He also reiterated Ghana’s call for restraint from both sides of the conflict: “The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities.”

How adventurers get to the Nkofieho Cave

0

Adventurers holding a thick rope to climb up to the cave play videoAdventurers holding a thick rope to climb up to the cave

The saying that “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” perfectly captures the experience of traveling to the Nkofieho Cave at Kwahu Twenedurase in the Eastern Region.

After eagerly anticipating a visit to the cave, especially to make a wish, one of the site’s most iconic traditions, many adventurers might find themselves second-guessing their decision when faced with the steep, jagged rocks leading to the wish center.

For balance and stability while climbing, visitors often require assistance, hence, the thick rope strategically placed along the path to aid the ascent to the cave site’s peak.

When the People and Places team from GhanaWeb TV, led by host Ernestina Serwaa Asante, visited the Nkofieho Cave, they were welcomed by tour guide, Frempong Emmanuel Okyere, who shared the history of the cave.

Nestled within a serene environment, the cave is surrounded by cool mountain breezes, making it cozy and inhabitable for all.

It’s no surprise that the forefathers of the people of Twenedurase used the cave as a hideout, fortifying themselves before heading into battle.

Inside the cave, adventurers experience a natural air-conditioning effect, offering relief after the long and strenuous hike to the summit.

“We are climbing up, and we are going to use the first rope. We will enter the cave through here and come out through there. Inside the cave, it is very dark, which is why we have this lamp to guide us. It feels just like an air conditioner,” the tour guide said on GhanaWeb TV’s People and Places.

He added that; “Nkofieho Cave is the only place in Ghana where you can experience a natural air-conditioning effect. If you’re looking for one, this is the only place to find it.”

The people of Twenedurase migrated from Adansi in the Ashanti Region sometime after 1630.

They are part of the Bretuo Clan, whose symbol is the leopard, commonly referred to as “Etwie” in Twi.

This majestic animal embodies their bravery and aggressiveness, reflecting the fearless nature of the Bretuo lineage.

Ghana signs MoU with mining equipment manufacturer to boost friendly mining practices

Michael Aidoo (R) after signing the agreement Michael Aidoo (R) after signing the agreement

The Western Regional Member of the Council of State, Michael Kofi Adjei Aidoo, has noted that Ghana has signed a partnership agreement with a leading mining equipment manufacturer, Jinpeng Mining Machinery Co. Ltd.

According to him, this partnership will provide access to environmentally-friendly mining equipment that will also help curb the devastating effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Announcing the agreement on Facebook, he wrote, “As part of efforts to drive sustainable progress and protect Ghana’s natural resources, I am delighted to announce a partnership and the signing of an MoU with Jinpeng Mining Machinery Co Ltd, a leading mining equipment manufacturer.”

He said the MoU will provide access to legal, environmentally friendly mining technologies, promoting sustainable practices, supporting Ghana’s efforts to curb galamsey, and fostering job creation through training and responsible resource management.

“This initiative aligns with Ghana’s commitment to protecting natural resources for the benefit of its citizens,” Aidoo added.

The Council of State member also added that Ghana’s transport sector needs to be modernised to revolutionise transportation in the country.

“In addition to mining, Ghana’s transport sector also requires transformative solutions to address challenges such as inefficiency, high costs, and reliability issues. Innovations like electric buses, smart fleet technology, and efficient maintenance systems can revolutionise the State Transport Corporation (STC) and Metro Mass Transit, reducing costs and improving reliability.

“We believe that modernising these sectors is crucial for Ghana’s sustainable progress and development. By partnering with global leaders, we can drive progress, restore our land, upgrade our infrastructure, and build a brighter future for Ghana,” he said.

“Stop the ‘Unnecessary Noise’ — Obiri Boahen Slams Freddie Blay Over Mahama’s Third-Term Debate

0

Nana Obiri Boahen, former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly criticized ex-NPP National Chairman Freddie Blay for suggesting that President John Dramani Mahama could be eligible to contest the 2028 elections as reported by Ghana Web.

Blay had earlier argued that Mahama’s eligibility would ultimately depend on judicial interpretation, emphasizing that “the law is in the bosom of the judges.”

However, Obiri Boahen firmly dismissed Blay’s position, stating that the 1992 Constitution is explicit and leaves no room for ambiguity.

According to him, Mahama has exhausted his constitutional limit of two terms and is not eligible to seek re-election.

Speaking in an interview on Sompa FM, Obiri Boahen remarked, “He [Freddie Blay] should go and read the 1964 referendum. He should stop making the unnecessary noise and wasting our time.”

He stressed that the matter doesn’t require any judicial intervention and criticized those pushing for a constitutional interpretation.

Obiri Boahen further accused the opposition of attempting to destabilize the judiciary to advance their political agenda, referencing historical instances where leaders who sought to extend their rule faced dire consequences.

He questioned the motive behind Mahama’s interest in returning to power, suggesting it stems from “greed and selfishness.”

He concluded by urging Freddie Blay and others to stop misleading the public, maintaining that the constitutional provision on presidential term limits is straightforward and should be respected without unnecessary debate.

Speaking on Metro TV on Monday, 16 June, she expressed dismay at the burden the fuel surcharge would have placed on Ghanaians.

Madam Manu emphasised that the levy was unnecessary and poorly timed, especially in light of rising living costs.

“Its passage was embarrassing,” she said. The government had maintained that the revenue would help stabilise the power sector and service legacy debts.

However, opposition figures and analysts labelled the surcharge, set at GH¢1 per litre of fuel, as economically reckless amid current hardships

Madam Manu welcomed the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) decision to suspend the levy, which had been scheduled to take effect on 16 June.

“The suspension isn’t a positive step, but what we need now is complete repeal,” she insisted.

Critics argue that the government’s rationale, citing global oil volatility from the Middle East crisis, reveals poor preparation and a lack of stakeholder consultation.

She urged the government to uphold its campaign promise of easing the financial burden on citizens rather than introducing new taxes.

With plans to abandon the levy, Ghana now faces an opportunity to explore alternative means of resolving power sector challenges without imposing additional costs on households and businesses.

Broda Sammy causes stir again as he performs King Paluta’s ‘Foko’ in church

Ghanaian gospel musician Broda Sammy has once again stirred controversy after performing a secular song during a church event.

The outspoken and unconventional worship minister surprised many when he took the microphone at Prophetess Mama Vida’s birthday celebration on Sunday, June 15, 2025, and delivered a rendition of King Paluta’s hit song “FOKO.”

The event, held at the Vida Bethel Prayer Center, saw church members and guests erupt in cheers and applause as Broda Sammy began singing.

Some worshippers were seen lifting their hands in joy while echoing the song’s catchy chorus.

Broda Sammy, born Samuel Opoku, has in recent years gained a reputation for bridging the gap between secular and gospel music in ways that challenge traditional norms.

It should be noted that this is not the first time Broda Sammy has reimagined a secular tune. He previously made headlines for performing “Grace” by Amerado and Lasmid, and has also been spotted at several worship events covering classics by Daddy Lumba, Amakye Dede, and even Shatta Wale.

‘May our church not become the National Cathedral hole’ – Mahama ‘mocks’ Akufo-Addo in church

President John Dramani Mahama, on Sunday, June 15, 2025, took a swipe at former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over his widely criticised failure to complete the National Cathedral project before leaving office.

Speaking at the Ringway Assemblies of God Church, where he delivered a sermon during the church’s Father’s Day service, President Mahama ended his message with a humorous yet pointed jab at the stalled cathedral project, a comment that drew laughter from the congregation.

While concluding his sermon and praying for the church’s growth, President Mahama said, “May our church continue to grow bountifully and be that huge master tree that we all want it to be. May our church not be the National Cathedral hole… You didn’t see that one coming.”

He added, “May our church not be the National Cathedral hole. Let it grow and grow and grow,” prompting the audience to burst into laughter.

The controversial National Cathedral project, once envisioned as a grand structure to serve multiple purposes and boost Ghana’s tourism sector, now remains abandoned, with little more than a large excavation site to show for it, despite $58 million already committed in funding.

It has even drawn international attention, having been featured in The New York Times.

Initiated under Akufo-Addo’s administration, the National Cathedral has become a major point of contention due to persistent delays, lack of transparency, and incomplete construction, symbolised by the now-infamous “cathedral hole.”

VRA cautions against farming, building within 280 feet Volta Lake contour

0

The VRA has installed demarcation pillars in communities around the Volta Lake The VRA has installed demarcation pillars in communities around the Volta Lake

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has urged Municipal and District Assemblies and traditional leaders to strictly halt farming and construction within the 280-foot contour of Volta Lake to prevent environmental degradation and safeguard public safety.

The area, identified as flood-prone and environmentally sensitive, must be preserved to safeguard both the environment and power generation.

The warning was delivered during an emergency preparedness and environmental sustainability stakeholder engagement workshop held in Asesewa, in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region.

Jonathan Hagan, Manager for Sustainability at the VRA, explained that the 280 feet contour represents the highest water level recorded on the Volta Lake following the construction of the Akosombo Dam.

He pointed out that during the rainy season, water levels rise substantially, flooding parts of the land within the 280ft mark, making it unsafe and unsuitable for settlement or farming.

“Over the years, especially during the rainy season, water levels rise significantly and flood parts of the land within the 280ft mark,” Mr. Hagan said. “Any form of development – whether farming or infrastructure, in this zone threatens power generation, ecosystems, and local livelihoods.”

He also noted that some people tended to encroach on the land during the dry season, mistaking the dry, bare riparian zones for abandoned land.

“But that land is not vacant; it is a waterway. When the lake reaches its high-water mark or when it spills over, all properties and crops within that zone will be submerged,” he added.

To prevent further encroachment, the VRA has installed demarcation pillars in communities such as Akateng, Fantem, Abotoase, Botokope, and Dzemeni to clearly mark the 280ft boundary line.

Additionally, Mr. Hagan revealed that the authority was piloting bamboo planting projects in Salaga, Yeji, Kwame Danso, and Afram Plains.

He explained that bamboo, being a fast-growing plant that stabilizes soil, would serve as an effective natural barrier to protect the high-water boundary.

Mr. Francis Abban, VRA’s Communications Manager, underscored the legal framework underpinning these restrictions.

He cited Section 27(2)(g) of the Volta River Development Act, 1961 (Act 46), as amended, and the State Lands (Volta River Flooded Areas) Instrument, 1974 (E.I. 98), which collectively designate about 2,600 square miles of land as submerged at maximum water levels, making any development there illegal.

He also stressed the importance of Ghana’s Buffer Zone Policy, which aims to preserve vegetation along water bodies to maintain water quality. “The recommended buffer width beyond the 280ft mark is between 10 and 60 meters,” he said.

Upper Manya Krobo District Chief Executive, Mr. Kwesi Lawer, acknowledged the challenges posed by upstream activities like farming along riverbanks.

“We will ensure that lands within the contour are left fallow, and where there are no trees, afforestation will be pursued to prevent erosion and protect the dam,” he said.

He announced that, with support from the VRA, Forestry Commission, and Agriculture Department, the District Assembly would establish a task force comprising community members to monitor and prevent illegal activities, as well as oversee reforestation efforts.

The DCE condemned poor physical planning, citing the recent submergence of the Akateng market, which was wrongly built on the contour line.

“During my tenure, no development will be allowed on the 280ft contour line. What happened at Akateng must never happen again,” he declared.

The VRA’s call for compliance aligns with ongoing efforts to balance human development with environmental preservation and sustainable power generation, ensuring the long-term safety and health of the Volta Lake ecosystem.

Ex-Minister endorses Ken Agyapong, gifts property to power party mobilisation

0

Former Western North Regional Minister, Joojo Rocky Obeng, has officially declared his support for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for the latter’s presidential bid, praising the former Assin Central MP for his longstanding philanthropic work and unwavering dedication to the grassroots of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement marking Kennedy Agyapong’s birthday, Mr. Obeng said the outspoken politician has earned a reputation for generosity and loyalty, which he believes are qualities needed to rebuild party unity and prepare for future electoral success.

“Hon. You have long entrenched your name as a generous giver to the base of our party and to the Ghanaian people. You have in time past made several life-changing and life-saving donations from the North to the South, from the East to the West to support the Ghanaian people,” Mr. Obeng stated.

As part of his personal commitment, the former regional minister announced the donation of a prime piece of real estate to aid Agyapong’s reorganisation drive.

“Today being your birthday, I wish to also make a few donations to you and make some very wonderful commitments to the course that you’ve embarked on. Hon. I am aware you’re organizing, doing quite a lot to organize our party base, to put some more strength in it. I cannot sit back and watch you do all of these. I wish to therefore contribute my widow’s mite towards this noble course by donating to you for your use, one of my landed properties at East Legon,” he declared.

Mr. Obeng urged Agyapong to continue his efforts with courage and consistency. “Hon. I believe that the efforts that you’re making in putting resources together for our party to regain its strength is a course we cannot leave you to undertake all by yourself. On this very day I want to wish you a very Happy Birthday once again, and also encourage you to remain courageous, to remain firm and to continue to be who you have always been — seeking the welfare of the young people of our country, seeking the welfare of the base of our party. May God give you the strength to push this agenda,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong, who placed second in the 2023 NPP presidential primaries, continues to wield considerable influence within the party, particularly among the grassroots and business communities.

‘Eleventh-hour U-turn epitomises trial-and-error’ – Minority on fuel levy postponement

0

The government has postponed the implementation of the GH¢1 fuel levy The government has postponed the implementation of the GH¢1 fuel levy

The Minority in Parliament has taken a swipe at the government for its decision to postpone the implementation of the GH¢1 Energy Sector Levy due to rising tensions between Israel and Iran.

The government had planned to begin the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025, popularly referred to as the Dumsor Levy, on June 16, 2025.

But the Minority has labelled the reversal of the government’s decision as a “chaotic and inconsistent approach to economic governance.”

In a statement issued on June 15, 2015, they noted that “this eleventh-hour U-turn epitomises a trial-and-error strategy and reveals a disturbing lack of stakeholder engagement before the passage of the law” and was “wholly inadequate.”

They also noted that the government is being dishonest and hypocritical for using global tensions as an excuse when it did not accept the previous government’s excuse of global occurrences.

The Minority also demanded that the levy be completely abolished and not just postponed.

They also warned that the government must use its inability to implement the levy as a justification for the power crisis.

In conclusion, the Minority asked the government to remember its campaign promise not to impose new taxes on Ghanaians.

A delegation from Team Ken, the support group for former Assin Central MP and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has paid a special Father’s Day visit to the Founder and Leader of the Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah.

The visit took place on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the church’s premises in Accra, where the delegation, led by key figures in Mr. Agyapong’s campaign, expressed gratitude and spiritual solidarity with the renowned clergyman.

Speaking on behalf of Team Ken, spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng described Apostle Owusu Bempah as a “father figure” whose influence and spiritual counsel have been vital to both political and faith communities in Ghana.

“Today is a day set aside to honour fathers and father figures, and as Team Ken, we have come here, backed by our faith, to recognize and appreciate a man of God we deeply believe in—Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah,” Mr. Kwarteng Frimpong stated.

“This is not a political gesture but a spiritual one. We are here because we know the Apostle carries grace and has consistently spoken truth to power. We wish him a blessed Father’s Day.”

Also present was Akwasi Poku, NPP Chairman for the Tema West Constituency, who praised the Apostle for his continued impact on the party and national affairs. He acknowledged the spiritual leader’s prayers and prophetic guidance through turbulent political times.

“We are here today on this special day not just to celebrate you as a father but also to seek peace and reconciliation,” Chairman Poku said.

“If there is anything the NPP or any of us may have done that hurt you, knowingly or unknowingly, we ask for forgiveness. We plead that you continue to intercede for the party, the leadership, and our beloved country, Ghana.”

The visit featured solemn moments of prayer and reflection, with Team Ken members expressing their appreciation for Apostle Owusu Bempah’s spiritual covering. The group acknowledged the pivotal role of religious leaders in guiding the conscience of the nation, particularly during politically sensitive periods.

Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah, known for his prophetic pronouncements and close ties to the political establishment, welcomed the delegation warmly. He prayed for peace, unity, and divine wisdom for Ghana’s leaders and thanked the group for their gesture.

He urged political actors across the spectrum to embrace humility, forgiveness, and Godly counsel in the pursuit of national service.

The Energy Sector Levy Account (ESLA) was passed in 2015 and per the new increment, which was presented on the Floor of Parliament by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance, under a Certificate of Urgency, a fortnight ago, the government imposed GH¢1 on every litre of petrol, diesel, LPG and Marine Gas Oil.

Bee attack disrupts BECE at Wa school for the deaf; one candidate misses paper

0

A swarm of wild bees attacked candidates writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the Wa School for the Deaf centre on Thursday, injuring two students and disrupting the exams.

The victims, a male and a female candidate, were rushed to the Wa Municipal Hospital for treatment. While the male candidate was treated and discharged in time to write the second paper, Career Technology, the female candidate was detained and missed the exam.

The incident occurred shortly after the English-language paper when staff from the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) pruned a tree near the examination centre, disturbing a beehive in the process.

Upper West Regional Controller of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Donald Tuor, confirmed the incident in an interview. He noted that efforts are underway to seek clemency for the female candidate who missed the paper.

“We are considering pursuing a clemency case for her because it was not her fault. Though the subject is compulsory, it is not a core subject, so she can still be graded,” Mr. Tuor explained.

He also disclosed that WAEC is investigating multiple cases of examination malpractice in the region. So far, one invigilator in the Wa Municipality has been dismissed, while another is on the run.

“All reported cases will be thoroughly investigated, and any individual found culpable will face the necessary sanctions,” Mr. Tuor said, adding that teachers involved in malpractice will be reported to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for disciplinary action.

This year, a total of 14,733 candidates—7,928 females and 6,805 males—from 620 schools, along with 169 private candidates, registered for the BECE in the Upper West Region. The exams are being conducted in 51 centres, supported by nine examination depots.

The Minority Leader of Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin issued a caution to First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, amid discussions in Parliament concerning the arrest and detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

During his submission on the floor of Parliament at the time of Wontumi’s arrest, Afenyo-Markin criticised what he described as the biased and capricious conduct of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), warning against the selective persecution of political opponents.

He urged the Deputy Speaker, who was presiding at the time, to stand firm and allow Parliament to exercise its mandate in ensuring rightful accountability, rather than permitting perceived political witch-hunts.

“Mr Speaker never should it happen to any politician that you will be leaving office and you start getting worried that what will happen to me tomorrow. We should freely save our country. Let the records bare me out.

“I support accountability, but accountability must be seen to be done. The rule of law must be followed, and due process must be followed.”

He cautioned the Majority side of the House not to gloat over Chairman Wontumi’s predicament, stressing that political power is not permanent.

“Mr Speaker pleased permit me to speak, tomorrow it maybe you, Mr speaker tomorrow it maybe you and I will be there for you, today some of our colleagues are in government, you can never tell. Something may happen that may not be your fault. We will all remain in this chamber and you may call on us. You are in government today and 2028 you cannot be sure.”

The Minority Leader reminded the House of the NPP’s past dominance in Parliament, noting the sharp decline in numbers.

“We had 169 Members in the House before, and in less than two years, we are ‘apa’ [fallen]. So don’t be too happy and don’t jubilate.”

He called on members from both sides to speak out against what he described as abuse of power by EOCO.

“Mr. Speaker, it is clear that EOCO is being capricious and biased. We must not entertain it.”

Hearts of Oak target Legon Cities midfielder Albert Yeboah in transfer move

Hearts of Oak have expressed strong interest in securing Albert Yeboah Hearts of Oak have expressed strong interest in securing Albert Yeboah

Hearts of Oak have expressed strong interest in securing the services of Legon Cities midfielder Albert Yeboah ahead of the new season, according to sources close to the negotiations.

The midfielder has emerged as one of the Ghana Premier League’s most consistent performers, with his technical ability and creative passing catching the attention of the Phobians’ technical team.

Yeboah, who has been instrumental for Legon Cities in recent seasons, is seen as an ideal addition to bolster Hearts of Oak’s midfield options.

While discussions are still at an early stage, club officials from both sides are expected to enter formal talks in the coming days.

The potential transfer would provide Hearts with much-needed creativity in the middle of the park as they look to rebuild their squad for next season.

Yeboah’s versatility – capable of playing both as a central midfielder and in more advanced roles – makes him an attractive prospect for the Accra-based club.

Legon Cities are understood to be reluctant to lose one of their key players but may be open to negotiations if the right offer materialises.

For Yeboah’s part, the opportunity to join one of Ghana’s most successful clubs could prove tempting as he considers his next career move.

Further developments are expected in the coming weeks as transfer activity across the Ghana Premier League intensifies ahead of the new season.

Kwaku Manu Thinks He Is. A Saint, But He Has Skeletons In His Cupboard–Okatakyie Manu

0

According to Ghana web, Controversial Ghanaian media figure, Okatakyie Afrifa, has stirred public outrage following a series of wild allegations against popular actor and media personality Kwaku Manu. In what many describe as a shocking exposé, Afrifa claims that Manu, despite his attempts to portray a clean image, is hiding disturbing secrets.

Okatakyie said, “Kwaku Manu thinks he’s a saint, but he has skeletons in his cupboard. If I had time, I would have made his life unbearable. He’s lucky I’m not focusing on him.” Okatakyie didn’t stop there. He alleged that during the time Kwaku Manu operated a private school, he was involved in the mysterious deaths of schoolchildren—an accusation that has not been backed by any evidence. “Back then when he had a school, children were dying mysteriously. He knows why,” Afrifa claimed without providing substantiation.

In a more explosive charge, Okatakyie accused the actor of dealing in illicit drugs, claiming that his source of wealth is rooted in the cocaine trade. “What you see him flaunting is not from acting or media work. Kwaku Manu is dealing in cocaine. That’s the real source of his money,” he alleged.

Kwaku Manu has yet to issue a detailed response to these serious claims, but he earlier cautioned Afrifa against dragging his name into baseless controversies. Meanwhile, the public remains divided, with some demanding proof and others calling for legal action to investigate the matter. These unverified accusations have caused a storm on social media, with fans of both personalities demanding clarity and accountability. As of now, no law enforcement body has confirmed any investigations related to the claims.

A Timeless and Trendy Fashion Combo

0

The combination of a crop top and skirt has long been a favorite in the fashion world, admired for its simplicity, versatility, and effortlessly chic appeal. From casual streetwear to glamorous red carpet ensembles, this pairing can be styled in countless ways to suit different occasions, body types, and personal styles.

A crop top, defined by its shorter length that exposes the midriff, brings a youthful and modern vibe to any outfit. When paired with a skirt—be it mini, midi, or maxi—the result is a balanced and stylish look that can be dressed up or down. High-waisted skirts are especially popular with crop tops, as they provide a flattering silhouette by accentuating the waist while offering a modest yet fashionable touch.

This fashion duo is perfect for warm weather and outdoor events. Lightweight fabrics like cotton, chiffon, or jersey are ideal for a relaxed, breezy outfit, while more structured materials like satin or sequins can transform the look into something suitable for a party or evening event. Popular styles include fitted pencil skirts with tailored crop tops for a sleek look, or flared skirts with off-shoulder or tie-front tops for a fun and flirty vibe.

Beyond aesthetics, the crop top and skirt combo allows for creative expression. Matching sets offer a coordinated, polished appearance, while mixing prints, colors, and textures lets wearers showcase their individuality. With the right accessories—such as statement jewelry, heels, or a stylish handbag—the outfit becomes a complete fashion statement.

In essence, the crop top and skirt combo remains a go-to outfit choice for fashion-forward individuals, offering the perfect blend of comfort, confidence, and contemporary style.

Residents cut off by uncompleted drainage system at Ablekuma Fanmilk

0

At Ablekuma Fanmilk 10 Plots, a suburb of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly, a drainage system built through the middle of a community road has blocked residents from easily accessing their own homes.

For nearly a decade, the issue has gone unresolved despite persistent complaints from affected households.

What was meant to improve the area’s infrastructure has instead become a major inconvenience. A deep, open gutter now cuts across the road, dividing homes from the main access route. Vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, are unable to access the area, forcing residents to walk long distances or navigate dangerous crossings just to reach their homes.

The impact on livelihoods is also evident. A local welder operating near the affected road says business has declined significantly, with clients unable to drive to his shop.

“During the rainy season, most of the time it floods over here. Due to that, we have lost customers. It is very difficult for us to receive more customers here,” he said.

Residents are also worried about safety, especially for schoolchildren. One concerned resident shared:

“I want the road to be fixed. We have schools in the area. When school closes during the rainy season, I have to keep them at my home because the gutter becomes dangerous during the rains. If a child were to fall, it would be disastrous. So I always stand watch here when it rains.”

Despite repeated engagements with local authorities, the problem persists.

“We have already consulted the assemblyman and the authorities, but what they say is that they will come and do something about it. When it rains from the top, looking at the erosion over here, if you are not careful and you step in, you will be taken away,” the resident added.

In response to the concerns, the Assemblyman for the Ablekuma Electoral Area, Efritete Baffoe Kyei, acknowledged the severity of the situation.

“It has been a very big challenge for us. Last year, I spoke to the Roads Engineer, Mr. Armah, and he told us that it had been earmarked to be given to a contractor to construct a drain for us. This year, around March, I asked him again, and he said Because of the change in government, I will have to exercise a little patience,” he said.

He emphasised the urgent need for proper drainage infrastructure in the community and assured residents that discussions with the Municipal Engineer are ongoing.

Nigerian police recover stolen vehicles from Ghana and Niger

0

The Nigeria Police Force has successfully recovered several vehicles that were stolen in Nigeria and smuggled across borders to Ghana and Niger Republic, demonstrating how international cooperation can help tackle cross-border crime.

In a statement released on Sunday, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, said the recoveries were made possible through coordinated operations involving INTERPOL.

The operations were led by INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in Abuja, which serves as Nigeria’s main contact point with the international police network. Working with INTERPOL offices in other countries, Nigerian police were able to track down the stolen vehicles and bring them back home.

One of the recovered vehicles was a Toyota Prado from 2020 that belonged to a Nigerian government agency. The car was stolen during a robbery in Abuja and later found in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. “The vehicle, which belongs to a Federal Government Agency in Nigeria, was stolen during a robbery incident in Abuja recently,” the statement reads.

“Three suspects were arrested in Ghana and have since been charged to court in Accra. The vehicle was successfully returned to Nigeria and formally handed over to the concerned agency.”

In a separate case, police recovered a 2018 Toyota Hilux that also belonged to a Nigerian government agency. This vehicle was stolen from a government employee in Utako District, in Abuja, on 18th October 2024. “Similarly, operatives of INTERPOL NCB Abuja recovered a Toyota Hilux (2018 model) belonging to another Federal Government agency in Nigeria. The vehicle had been stolen from a staff of the agency in Utako District, FCT Abuja, on 18th October 2024.”

“Through extensive investigation and international cooperation facilitated by INTERPOL NCB Niamey, the vehicle was tracked to Agadez, Niger Republic, and officially handed over at the Nigeria-Niger border (Ilela/Konni) to a senior staff representing the agency.”

The recovery process involved extensive detective work and coordination between Nigerian police and their counterparts in Niger Republic. The vehicle was eventually found in Agadez, a city in Niger, and was handed over to Nigerian officials at the border crossing between the two countries.

Adejobi also revealed that police are working on recovering two more stolen vehicles. These are a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV, both of which were stolen from their owners in Abuja in May 2024 and later sold in Niamey, Niger’s capital city.

The police spokesperson encouraged all Nigerian citizens to take steps to protect their vehicles and make recovery easier if theft occurs. He advised people to register their vehicles on police electronic platforms and to “take all necessary precautions to enhance the chances of swift recovery in the unfortunate event of theft.”

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that earth-moving equipment procured under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) will soon be deployed to construct farm roads across the country.

He said all districts will be provided with fuel to operate the DRIP machines to ensure they are used for their intended purpose.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi on Sunday, June 15, Mr. Opoku revealed that the government will temporarily halt all major road construction projects in rural areas to make way for the DRIP equipment to be utilized effectively.

“What we intend to do is to provide all districts with the financial resources to fuel the machines and use the available equipment to develop access roads. This will make it easier to transport food from farms to communities without any difficulty,” he said.

The minister further disclosed that some officials were preparing to award new road construction contracts in rural areas, but he intervened to stop them.

“Just last week, some people were preparing to award contracts for the construction of roads in some rural communities. I asked them to stop because we already have the equipment. All we need to do is provide them with fuel and let them go to work,” he added.

About OmniBSIC Bank

OmniBSIC Bank is a fully-fledged universal bank formed through the merger of the erstwhile OmniBank and Sahel Sahara Bank. The merger was driven by the Bank of Ghana’s banking sector consolidation programme introduced in 2017, which included increasing the minimum capital requirement nearly fourfold—from GH¢120 million to GH¢400 million.

The merger is considered one of the most successful in Ghana’s financial services industry, largely due to the similarities in business models and size of the two institutions, as well as the willingness of stakeholders (management, staff, and directors) to embrace the unification. This synergy positioned the new entity as a significant player in Ghana’s banking ecosystem.

OmniBSIC has since reinforced its corporate governance structures and invested in infrastructure to align with the Bank of Ghana’s regulatory standards. The bank is committed to upholding the highest levels of integrity, transparency, and accountability, creating a reliable framework for customers to conduct their banking activities with confidence and convenience.

Headquartered in Accra’s Airport City, OmniBSIC Bank operates a network of 40 branches across Ghana. It offers a comprehensive suite of products, services, and digital solutions tailored to the needs of corporate clients, SMEs, and individuals, while actively supporting the communities in which it operates. To ensure the delivery of exceptional banking experiences, the bank invests heavily in technology and employee development, reflected in its rigorous staff selection process and comprehensive capacity-building programs.
