NIB Intercepts $350m worth of cocaine en route to Accra from Western Region
The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has intercepted a massive consignment of cocaine weighing 3.3 tonnes en route to Accra from the Western Region.
The operation, conducted on March 4, 2025, at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast, uncovered 143 sacks of cocaine concealed beneath sand in a tipper truck traveling from Takoradi in the Western Region, to Weija in Accra.
US-based Promoter, Eric Davis has expressed concern that Ghana’s focus on professional boxing is coming at the expense of its amateur program, leading to many fighters turning pro prematurely.
Eric suggests that a stronger emphasis on amateur development could yield more successful professional boxers and champions for Ghana.
He was speaking at a boxing seminar dubbed “Uplifting Ghana Boxing” on Wednesday, (26 March) at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. The event was well attended by boxers, coaches, referees, medics, promoters, managers, matchmakers, fans, and journalists.
Eric admitted that economic factors might drive this early professionalization, but insists there should be a strategy to strengthen the amateur boxing program in Ghana, with a focus on providing more opportunities for young boxers to gain experience before turning professional.
“I watch a lot of Ghana boxing, and the ones that streamed online, and what I notice about Ghana boxing is that you guys are not focusing on your amateur program.” – he said.
“A lot of fighters in Ghana are turning pro premature. I’m just thinking that it’s just economics, but I feel like if you concentrate a lot on your amateurs and then let your amateurs be true amateurs, and then go to that next level in professional boxing.
“I think that you will see a different outcome when it comes to how many champions Ghana will produce. I just think that you guys need to focus on your amateur program because I think that a lot of fighters, a lot of boxers, are prematurely turning pro.

Parliament has approved a budget of GHS31 billion for the Ministry of Education for the year 2025.
As part of its plans for the year, the Ministry intends to waive academic fees for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions to enhance access to higher education.
Additionally, the government will implement free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, aiming to reduce the financial burden on families.
To improve teacher welfare, the Ministry plans to commence the construction of 100 accommodation facilities for basic school teachers under the “Teacher Dabrɛ Initiative.”
Parliament earlier also approved a budget allocation of GHS4 billion for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs for the 2025 fiscal year.
The funds will be used to pay allowances for assembly members and traditional authorities, as well as support various programmes and projects under the Ministry. Additionally, plans are in place to establish a National Prayer Day.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 27, Minister for Roads and Highways and MP for Adaklu, Governs Agbodza, addressed concerns about the remuneration of assembly members.
“The assembly members’ remuneration will be part of the Common Fund formula, which is being considered,” he stated.

Legal scholar Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kwaku Azar has cited a landmark Supreme Court ruling to emphasize that Ghana’s apex court has no jurisdiction to intervene when a petition is filed against the removal of a public officer under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
The petition against the removal of the Chief Justice through three petitions that have been presented to the President and subsequently forwarded to the Council of State for consultation.

In response, the peace agreement with President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s SPLM party has been terminated, the SPLM-IO announced, with observers warning the East African country could descend into civil war once again amid the latest escalation of tensions.
A spokesman for the SPLM-IO said security forces entered Machar’s home on Wednesday evening and are holding him and his wife Angelina Teny, the country’s interior minister, captive.
The party blames President Kiir for the action, and accuses him of not keeping his word and lacking the political will to create peace and stability in the country.
South Sudan, with a population of around 11 million, experienced a severe civil war after it gained independence from its northern neighbour Sudan in 2011. President Kiir and his opponent Machar formed a joint transitional government in 2020, which is now on the verge of collapse.
The domestic political crisis has been escalating for several weeks. On Tuesday the SPLM-IO said that four leading politicians had been arbitrarily arrested. Three other SPLM-IO politicians were arrested at the beginning of March.
Meanwhile, a militia of the Nuer ethnic group, to which Vice President Machar belongs, has been fighting government troops on the border with Ethiopia for weeks. The government has bombed civilian targets in the area, and dozens of people have been killed in the fighting.
The army accuses Machar’s party of fuelling the conflict. Machar, in turn, accuses Kiir of wanting to disempower his supporters.
Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN peacekeeping mission UNMISS, warned that the country’s leadership was on the verge of relapsing into all-out conflict. He called on the parties to immediately cease hostilities and enter into dialogue.

Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has argued that producers and directors should not be solely blamed for demanding sex in exchange for movie roles.
Speaking during a discussion on The Honest Bunch podcast, Kosoko acknowledged that while soliciting sexual favors for roles is unethical, actresses always have a choice in the matter.
“If I say I need you to warm my bed so that I can give you a role, and you say no, they cannot force you to do it. And if you want that role by all means, that means you want to dance to his tune,” he stated.
Although he condemned the practice, Kosoko emphasised that actresses involved should also take accountability for their decisions.
“I’m not saying it’s right to have introduced that to you, but if you fall for it, that’s your own business. How does that concern the whole world? All this sex-for-roles thing, forget about it,” he remarked.
The veteran actor also alleged that some women intentionally use sexual relationships to fast-track their careers.
“I know some ladies who come into the industry determined that, by the time ‘I sleep with this person and that person, I will make a name for myself.’ I know of some popular actresses. I even know of a magistrate,” he claimed.

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu
The Parliament of Ghana has approved a total sum of GH¢31,772,464,382.00 to finance the operations of the Ministry of Education for the year 2025.
Moving the motion for the budget’s approval, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, stated that GH¢27,149,518 of the total amount will go toward compensation payments, GH¢1,123,000,000 will be allocated for goods and services, and GH¢120,000,000 will be designated for capital expenditure.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to continuing the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, with funding from the uncapped GETFund ensuring its sustained financing.
As part of its expenditures for the year, the ministry will implement a free academic facility user fee policy for persons living with disabilities.
Additionally, the ministry plans to pursue other policies, including the provision of free sanitary pads for schoolgirls, the transformation of STEM education at the lower levels, and free tertiary education for first-year students.
“It is intended that on April 24, the President, the Minister for Education, and the Minister for Gender will jointly launch the free sanitary pads initiative, which will be distributed nationwide. Mr. Speaker, we intend to modernize Ghana’s education system, introduce digital skills, and, in particular, emphasize science and mathematics education. We will revolutionize STEM education at the upper primary levels, particularly in grades 4 to 6.
“And, Mr. Speaker, we need to prepare tertiary institutions to absorb the increased number of students graduating from the Free Senior High School policy. The resources may not be adequate, but we will also continue efforts to complete several GETFund projects across the country that remain unfinished,” the minister stated.

The Goldbod Technical Committee has held a successful stakeholder engagement with small-scale miners, gold dealers, traditional leaders, and other key stakeholders in Bolgatanga, in the Upper East Region.
The consultation, which took place on March 26, 2027, aimed at gathering insights to refine the framework for Goldbod’s operations.
Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, expressed confidence that the Goldbod Bill will be passed before Parliament goes on recess.
“The government sees Goldbod as a strategic tool to ensure that more gold remains within the formal economy, contributing to national revenue and economic stability,” Sammy Gyamfi said.
Goldbod, a proposed state-backed gold trading initiative, is designed to enhance Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves, combat gold smuggling, and regulate the country’s gold trade.
The initiative has received endorsements from prominent figures, including former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and natural resource governance expert Dr. Steve Manteaw.
The initiative comes at a time when Ghana, a top gold producer in Africa, continues to grapple with challenges such as illicit gold trade and foreign exchange instability.
The stakeholder engagement in Bolgatanga forms part of broader consultations to fine-tune Goldbod’s operational framework before it is formally implemented.
The convicts with the drugs in Tamale
The Tamale Circuit Court presided over by Francis Asobayire, has sentenced five persons to a fine in connection with the possession of illicit drugs.
The convicts are Haruna Mohammed Sadais, 27; Iddrisu Fidaws, 20; Alhassan Wumpini, 20; Bassit Iddrisu, 21 and Alhassan Adam, 33.
They were arrested during a police patrol on March 5, 2025 in Tamale, and a search conducted on them found tramadol, rohypnol, and cannabis, and therefore arraigned before court.
Iddrisu Fidaws was found guilty on four charges, receiving a fine of GH¢90,000 for two of those charges or in default serve 15 years imprisonment, and GH¢7,200 for the other two charges or in default serve 10 years imprisonment.
Alhassan Wumpini was also convicted on four charges, with a fine of GH¢90,000 for two of the charges or in default serve 10 years imprisonment, and GH¢10,800 for the remaining two charges or in default serve 10 years imprisonment.
Bassit Iddrisu faced two counts, each resulting in a fine of GH¢19,200 or in default serve six (6) years imprisonment.
Alhassan Adam was convicted on three counts, receiving a fine of GH¢90,000 for one count or in default serve 15 years imprisonment, GH¢10,800 for another count or in default serve 10 years imprisonment.
Haruna Mohammed Sadais was convicted on two counts, with a fine of GH¢99,996 for one count or in default serve 17 years imprisonment, and GH¢84,000 for the other count or in default serve 10 years imprisonment.
They were however, convicted on their own plea. The convicts failed to pay their fines and, therefore, have been remanded in custody.

The World Bank Group has launched the Business Ready (B-READY) Report in Ghana, providing a comprehensive assessment of the country’s business environment and identifying key areas for reform.
The report highlights Ghana’s strengths in labor market regulations and utility services but underscores critical challenges in business registration, property transfer, construction permitting, access to credit, and dispute resolution.
Speaking at the launch, Robert Taliercio O’Brien, Division Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone at the World Bank, emphasized the urgency of addressing Ghana’s bureaucratic inefficiencies and regulatory bottlenecks. “The B-READY data highlights several areas where Ghana is doing better than peers in the Sub-Saharan Africa region… At the same time, the data reveals significant bottlenecks that, if unaddressed, will continue stifling growth and deterring investment,” he said.
The Minister for Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu Ajare, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing these challenges through the Business Regulatory Reform (BRR) Programme. She stressed the importance of streamlining regulatory frameworks, reducing bureaucratic delays, and fostering a competitive business environment.
“Achieving the full impact of Ghana’s economic transformation agenda depends on establishing robust regulatory frameworks and enhancing institutional efficiency. The government is committed to removing long-standing barriers that have hindered businesses from realizing their full potential,” the Minister stated.
The report’s methodology and global benchmarking were presented by Valeria Perotti, Manager of the Business Ready (B-READY) unit at the World Bank, who provided insights into how Ghana compares to peer economies and where targeted reforms could unlock growth. “The B-READY initiative is not just a set of rankings; it is a diagnostic tool that provides governments with a clear roadmap for reform. Our goal is to ensure a business environment that is efficient, transparent, and conducive to investment,” she said.
The launch event featured an engaging panel discussion with key private sector leaders and policy experts, including Simon Madjie, CEO, Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC); Alexander Mould, CEO, Millennium Development Authority (MiDA); Mavis Owusu Gyamfi, President & CEO, African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET); Seth Twum Akwaboah, CEO, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and; Ashok Mohinani, Executive Director, Mohinani Group. The panel explored practical solutions for improving Ghana’s business climate, emphasizing the need for digitalization of regulatory processes, simplification of tax and trade procedures, and enhanced public-private collaboration.
Kyle Kelhofer, Senior Country Manager for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, International Finance Corporation (IFC), reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s economic transformation. “The World Bank Group stands ready to assist Ghana with both financial and technical support to implement key reforms. This includes investments in infrastructure, digital transformation of public services, and strengthening credit systems to enhance financial access for businesses,” he said.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has rejected a proposal by Interior Minister and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, to introduce a fuel levy aimed at equipping the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

Sakumono, Mar. 26, GNA – Dr. Worlanyo Mensah, an Economist, has emphasised the need to formalise community task forces as a crucial step in combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana.
Dr. Mensah said that every community had assembly members and unit committee members who could mobilise the youth to protect the environment and enforce mining regulations.
He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that the fight against galamsey should not be left in the hands of politicians, as they often prioritise raising funds for their next election campaigns rather than addressing the issue effectively.
According to him, community members were in the best position to identify illegal miners and report their activities, stressing that the government should empower local task forces to monitor mining activities, prevent illegal operations, and ensure responsible mining practices.
“People living in mining areas are directly affected by galamsey, seeing the destruction of their water bodies, farmlands, and forests daily. If we formalise community task forces and give them the necessary support, they can play a significant role in stopping this menace,” he stated.
He explained that assembly members and unit committees already had structures in place to mobilise people for community development, noting that formalising their involvement in the fight against galamsey could act as a bridge between the government and the local population to ensure that mining regulations are enforced.
Dr. Mensah criticised the role of politicians in the fight against illegal mining, stating that many of them are more focused on financial gains than environmental protection.
He urged the government to establish independent community task forces that were not influenced by political leaders, saying that the groups should be trained and provided with resources to carry out their duties effectively.
Dr. Mensah noted that by engaging the youth in anti-galamsey activities, the government could create jobs and reduce unemployment in mining communities.

McBrown explained that while she remains active in entertainment and brand endorsements, she is already working towards a quieter, more sustainable lifestyle in the near future.

Chief Justice, Getrude Torkornoo
An old video of the Chief Justice, Getrude Torkornoo, defending all the decisions she took in her capacity as head of the Judiciary has resurfaced online amid petitions calling from her removal from office.
The video, which was recorded during a Women’s Leadership Conference in November 2024, was shared by the X page of GNA on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
It captured her speaking about her stance on the legalities of her rulings and all administrative decisions at the Supreme Court.
In her address she stated, “I was reminding myself of recent conversations when people would say to me, you have held up. You have done well in this onslaught, and I realised that what has held me up is assurance of competence. Simply, no decision that I have made in my role as Chief justice or in my capacity as president of a panel of the Supreme Court has come from anything but a knowledge of law.
“No matter how many noises are made, the law is the law, and the only answer one can give to the hand waving is the legal answer, unless we want something else, but I am quite sure that Ghana as a society is not looking for chief justices that bend and give them something other than law”.
President John Dramani Mahama has received three separate petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice from office.
In accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, he has forwarded the petitions to the Council of State to begin the mandated consultation process.
A statement issued by Spokesperson to the President and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, emphasised the president’s commitment to following constitutional procedures in handling the situation.
This is not the first time calls have been made for her removal. In 2024, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo received a petition seeking her removal from office over allegations of misconduct and incompetence.
The petition dated December 17, 2024, was filed by a legal scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, who accused Justice Torkornoo of constitutional and administrative breaches.
The petitioner argued that these alleged actions undermine the credibility and integrity of the judiciary.

Communities hosting mining companies in Ghana will face further underdevelopment due to the proposed amendment of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) Act, 2018 (Act 978), as amended, according to the Member of Parliament for Juaben, Francis Owusu-Akyaw.
The proposed amendment seeks to transfer 80% of mineral royalties, originally retained by MIIF, to the Consolidated Fund to finance the government’s development initiatives.
In 2018, under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, Parliament passed Act 978, later amended by the Minerals Income Investment Fund (Amendment) Act, 2020 (Act 1024), to maximize the state’s mineral income for the benefit of citizens.
The law aimed to ensure responsible, transparent, and sustainable monetization of mineral revenues while also implementing measures to reduce Ghana’s budgetary exposure to mineral income fluctuations.
However, the new John Mahama-led government, through the 2025 Budget and Policy Statement, has initiated processes to further amend the legislation, requiring that 80% of MIIF-held royalties be transferred to the Consolidated Fund to support the BIG PUSH infrastructure agenda.
During the debate on the 2025 budget statement in Parliament on Monday, March 24, MP for Juaben, Francis Owusu-Akyaw, strongly opposed the move, warning that it would deprive mining communities of much-needed development.
He argued that it remains unclear what kind of infrastructure projects will be undertaken with the diverted MIIF funds and expressed concern that the state would invest little in mining activities, contrary to the original objectives of the MIIF law.
The Juaben legislator further cautioned that the move would lead to the neglect of host communities where mining takes place, questioning whether they would directly benefit from such projects.
“Is the infrastructure meant to develop the mining sector, from which these revenues are generated, in line with the objectives of MIIF? Or is it just any infrastructure? How much will be reinvested into boosting mining operations if the funds are directed toward projects unrelated to mining? Again, there will be total neglect of the communities where mining activities occur, as a huge percentage of the funds will go toward unspecified infrastructure development. This is too risky a path for any government to take,” Owusu-Akyaw stated.
In a related matter, the Juaben MP criticized the government’s re-categorization of mining into small, medium, and large-scale operations.
He argued that many licensed small-scale miners lack adequate land to engage in productive mining, while those with available land often operate through “trial and error,” causing environmental destruction.
“Mr. Speaker, the solution to the menace of galamsey does not lie in re-categorization. Most small-scale mining licenses granted under Section 82 of the Minerals and Mining Act 2006 do not even have access to productive mining areas. Additionally, those with land often engage in unregulated alluvial gold mining, leading to environmental degradation. Furthermore, some large-scale miners are already engaged in medium-scale operations, which does not violate any law. So why spend resources on re-categorization?” Owusu-Akyaw questioned.

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended another suspect in connection with the robbery and murder of a mobile money (MoMo) vendor in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Martin Amoah, also known as “Baba Macho,” was arrested on Thursday, March 27, 2025, in Kpone, Greater Accra Region, following an intelligence-led operation.
Amoah had been declared wanted by the Ashanti Regional Police, and his arrest brings the total number of suspects detained in connection with the case to four.
The police have confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and will soon be arraigned to face charges.
The arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident, which has drawn widespread attention. The Ghana Police Service added that it remains committed to ensuring justice is served and has urged the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement efforts.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, the Public Affairs Officer, issued the statement and reiterated the police’s dedication to maintaining public safety and security.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has filed a lawsuit against the Attorney-General, challenging the procedural legality of President John Dramani Mahama’s actions regarding the potential removal of the Chief Justice.
The lawsuit follows the President’s initiation of consultations with the Council of State concerning three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Assafuah, represented by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, is requesting the Supreme Court’s interpretation of constitutional provisions governing the removal of a Chief Justice.
He argues that the President is required to notify the Chief Justice and obtain her comments before referring a removal petition to the Council of State, as stipulated in Articles 146(1), (2), (4), (6), and (7), 23, 57(3), and 296 of the Constitution.
Assafuah contends that the failure to notify the Chief Justice before initiating consultations with the Council of State constitutes a violation of Article 146(6) and undermines the constitutional protection of the Chief Justice’s security of tenure.
The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case in the coming weeks, with the Attorney-General required to respond within fourteen (14) days of being served.

Accra, March 27, GNA – Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has requested copies of the three petitions seeking her removal from office from President John Dramani Mahama.
The Chief Justice in a letter addressed to the President and copied to Mr Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho, the Chairman of the Council of State, said on the night of Tuesday, 25th March 2025, a communication from the Presidency was circulated on social media announcing that the President had received three petitions for her removal as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana pursuant to article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
She said the communication further stated that the President had forwarded the three petitions to the Council of State to commence the consultation process mandated by Article 146 (6) of the 1992 Constitution.
“Respectfully, as you are no doubt aware, it is the most fundamental precept of the common law and our constitutional dispensation ingrained into the justice delivery process, that no consideration that affects the rights of a defendant can be made unless the defendant has been given notice of the contents of a charge, and an opportunity to respond to them,” she stated.
“Further, no defendant can be subjected to a trial unless the preliminary process of receiving their response has been adhered to.”
This, she said, formed part of the age old audi alteram partem rule of natural justice, and the fundamental rights of citizens under Article 19, Article 23, and Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution, and all decisions in Ghana’s jurisprudence.
She noted that up to date, on 27th March 2025, she had not been shown the three petitions mentioned in the communication of 25th March, 2025 or given an opportunity to respond to them, which material was expected to form the premise for the consultations between the Council of State and the President under Article 146 (6), as to whether there was a need to set up the Committee of Inquiry described in Article 146 (6) and 146 (7) for the trial of any issues raised.
“As you are aware, when a petition for removal of a Superior Court Judge under Article 146 (1) is forwarded to the Chief Justice, the first requirement of due process is for the Chief Justice to bring the petition to the attention of the accused Judge, and to obtain their response to the petition,” she stated.
The Chief Justice said this was the right afforded every citizen in justice delivery, and it is provided for in the Article 146 procedures.
“In my time as Chief Justice, I have handled five such petitions for removal of superior court Judges, and heard from them before determining whether a prima facie case has been made against them to merit the setting up of the investigative committee provided for under Article 146 (4),” Chief Justice Torkornoo said.
She said it was the combination of the evidence in the petition, and the response of the Judge that guided the Chief Justice to determine, as a sole enquirer under Article 146 (3), whether a prima facie case had been established against the Judge, to merit the setting up of the investigative committee of three Justices and two eminent citizens to conduct a hearing of the complaint against the Judge pursuant to Article 146 (4).
Respectfully, in the case of the Chief Justice, please allow me to submit that it is the combination of the evidence in the petition, and the response of the Chief Justice, that provides the material for consultation between His Excellency the President and eminent members of the Council of State under Article 146 (6).
These two sources serve to guide whether a prima facie case has been established, such that a Committee of Inquiry should be set up under Article 146 (7) to inquire into whether the Chief Justice may be removed from office.”
The Chief Justice said this was the direction of the Supreme Court in the case of Agyei -Twum v Attorney-General and Akwettey [2005-2006] SCGLR 732.
“l am by this letter humbly and respectfully asking His Excellency the President and eminent members of the Council of State to forward the petitions against me to me, and allow me at least seven days after receipt of same, to provide my response to you, which response can then form part of the material that you conduct the consultations anticipated under 146 (6), before the possible setting up of a Committee of Inquiry under article 146 (7),” the Chief Justice said.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has strongly denied claims that it has frozen the bank accounts of Richard Nii Armah Quaye, founder of Bills Micro Credit Ltd.
This follows reports suggesting that the Authority had taken enforcement action against Mr. Quaye and imposed a personal income tax assessment of GH₵30 million on him.
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 27, the GRA clarified that no such enforcement action, including freezing his bank accounts, has been taken. However, it confirmed that an income tax assessment has been issued against him.
“In the case of Mr. Richard Nii Armah Quaye, GRA has not commenced any enforcement action against him, including freezing his bank accounts. The Authority has issued an assessment on him relating to his income taxes,” the statement read.
The GRA urged the public to disregard social media reports and other publications alleging that Mr. Quaye’s accounts had been frozen.
“GRA, therefore, requests the general public to disregard the publications on social media and other platforms that Mr. Quaye’s bank accounts have been frozen by the Authority. We also urge all eligible taxpayers to voluntarily disclose incomes earned and pay the taxes due to GRA to avoid the payment of penalties and interests as well as facing other sanctions,” the Authority added.
The statement further emphasized that the GRA follows standard procedures in assessing taxpayers’ incomes.
“GRA engages all taxpayers to assess their incomes earned and follows a standard procedure in communicating with them. These processes include writing to request taxpayers to voluntarily declare their income, raising assessments when they fail to declare their income by the due date, and following due processes to request payment of the tax due,” the statement explained.
The GRA reassured the public of its commitment to fair and transparent tax administration while encouraging voluntary compliance to avoid penalties and other legal consequences.

Popular rapper Edem has finally explained why he ‘confused’ Ghanaians in 2023, just as the campaigns leading up to the December 7, 2024, elections began.
In March 2023, he posted photos of himself with both New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flyers on his social media platforms, giving the impression that he was interested in contesting for a position in one of the parties.
This move sparked mixed reactions on social media. However, after the initial buzz, Edem remained silent on the matter.
Fast-forward to March 27, 2025, and the rapper has finally revealed that it was nothing more than a simple ‘social experiment.’
In an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM, Edem explained that the idea came about spontaneously during a photo shoot with his team, and they didn’t even take it seriously at first.
However, the response after the flyers were shared took him by surprise.
“I was blown away by that experiment because when the first poster came out, every big name you can think of on that side, those in power, reached out to me. They were like, ‘You want to join us? We’ll support you. You have what it takes.’ Meanwhile, the people on the other side started attacking me, asking, ‘Why are you doing this? Are you sure this is what you want to do?’”
“Then, the next day, when I switched sides, the same thing happened in reverse. The other side started attacking, while the previous critics began praising me,” he said amidst laughter.
Despite the mixed reactions, Edem took away some key lessons from the experience.
“First, you have to decide whose ideologies you believe in and support that person. The only reason the other side is unhappy is that you are a person of value. And they will say you did a ‘messiah,’” he remarked.
“Second, from the experiment, I realized that the NPP poster had more engagement than the NDC poster. Maybe the momentum dropped a little. The NDC flyer was shared on day one, but it didn’t get the same level of engagement as the NPP flyer. My recommendation to the NDC is that you guys should strengthen your online game,” he added.
One striking moment, according to Edem, was when a friend, who is also a politician, confessed that he had almost cut ties with him after seeing one of the flyers.
“I remember someone messaged me—he was contesting as an MP. He told me, ‘Bro, you nearly killed me. I was planning never to pick your calls again because I thought you were coming to contest in my constituency.’”
“And I was like, ‘So just because I was coming to contest as an MP, I became your enemy?’” Edem recounted.

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that the government will not ban small-scale mining in the country.
Speaking to the media during a recent visit to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, he emphasised the need for responsible mining.
“The reason we won’t ban small-scale mining is that those who want to do it legally and responsibly, we want to support you. We are bringing the licensing regime to your doorstep at the district level, providing you with demarcated areas for mining, training, and equipment so that you can produce more gold responsibly without destroying the environment,” he stated.
He also urged small-scale miners to sell their gold only to licensed Ghanaian buyers.
“When you mine gold, do not sell it to an Indian, a Chinese, a Burkinabe, or an unlicensed Ghanaian. Instead, sell it to a Ghanaian who has been licensed by the Ghana Gold Board. That licensed Ghanaian has been provided with taxpayers’ money by the board to purchase gold for the government,” he stated.

The event also featured free dental screenings for over 450 children, conducted by personnel from the Dental Unit of Family Health Hospital, with support from medical, nursing, and midwifery students from Family Health University.
This initiative forms part of the activities marking the official launch of Family Health University after receiving its Presidential Charter to operate as a full-fledged university.
The event was graced by several notable figures, including a Clinical Coordinator and Head of Medical Records and Statistician, as well as representatives from Family Health University and Family Health Hospital.

The mouth and the pathways going into the body have not been identified as a route for the virus
The President of the Ghana HIV and AIDS Network, a civil society organisation (CSO) dedicated to combating HIV and AIDS in Ghana, Amoabeng Ortsin, has dismissed speculations that the virus can be transmitted through oral sex.
In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Stella Dziedzorm on Health Focus, Ortsin stated that there is no available data linking oral sex to HIV/AIDS infections.
He emphasised that the mouth and digestive pathways have not been identified as a mode of transmission.
“So far, all available research and data indicate that when the virus enters your stomach, it becomes inactive. You are not going to get infected simply because you ingested the virus.
“If you look at the modes of transmission, there is something called QQR (Quality, Quantity, and Route). The mouth and digestive pathways have not been identified as a route for the virus,” he explained.
Ortsin further clarified that the primary cause of HIV/AIDS transmission is tiny cuts and abrasions on the skin that occur during penetrative sex.
“Normally, it is those abrasions and tiny cuts on the skin that open during sex that lead to transmission. But oral sex has not been identified as a major risk factor,” he said.
He concluded by acknowledging that while there may be other health concerns associated with oral sex, HIV transmission is not one of them.
“There are other risks with oral sex, but when it comes to HIV, it is not a mode of transmission,” he added.

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the leadership of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to embrace innovation by adopting modern technology and best agronomic practices to enhance yields without expanding farm sizes.
He emphasised the need to move beyond traditional farming methods to ensure increased productivity and sustainability in the cocoa sector.
President Mahama said this when the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Dr. Ransford Anertey Abbey, led members of the Cocoa Coffee and Sheanut Farmers Association (COCOSHE) to pay a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House, Accra, on Thursday, March 27.
President Mahama was grateful to the farmers for their continued pragmatic investments that have kept the cocoa, coffee and shea sector running.
He noted that the cocoa sector is saddled with financial challenges, mainly debts which have been accrued over the years and expressed optimism that the GHC32 billion debt owed by COCOBOD would be managed through fiscal discipline under the new leadership.
Speaking on environmental protection, President Mahama underscored the need for legal measures to safeguard cocoa farms from destruction.
“We will pass laws to protect cocoa trees and ensure they are not cut for mining. This way, we will improve the sector and save the environment,” he stated.
He emphasized that preserving cocoa farmlands is crucial for the sustainability of the industry and the well-being of future generations. The President pledged to revamp the cocoa sector, which is fraught with challenges, including illegal mining, smuggling and inadequate input supply to farmers.
He also hinted at plans to diversify the sector, disclosing that Ghana and Columbia are in talks to collaborate in coffee production.
He expressed trust in the discussions held with the heads of the Sahel states to lift the ban on the export of shea fruits for processing as a major step to augment Ghana’s annual production level of about 70,000 metric tonnes.
In a speech read on his behalf, Alhaji Alhassan Bukari, the national president of COCOSHE, noted that the shea sector, which is equally important as cocoa and contributes to foreign revenue generation, is badly affected by the collapse of the Buipe shea processing plant, leading to job losses.
Alhaji Bukari, however, expressed his trust in the president to revamp the Buipe Shea factory to play its befitting role in Ghana’s economy.
He reiterated COCOSHE’s plea for the government to prioritise farmers’ welfare, which is an incentive to boost production, while calling for stringent measures to curb cocoa smuggling, which has become detrimental to the country’s foreign exchange earnings.
“Ghana is losing volumes of cocoa in this illicit activity to our neighbours, shoring up their production levels and reducing ours. Illegal mining is taking over the lands of our cocoa farmers to their displeasure and forcing some of them to watch helplessly,” he bemoaned.

Accra, March 27, GNA – The Ghana Chamber of Mines has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the government to explore solutions that balance industry sustainability with revenue needs.
Responding to ongoing discussions about key issues in the mining sector, particularly the increase in the Growth and Sustainability Levy (GSL) and concerns regarding the country’s natural resource management, Mr Ahmed Nantogmah, Director External Relations of the Chamber, said while the Chamber acknowledged the renewed public interest in optimizing Ghana’s mineral wealth, the discussions must be devoid of misconceptions.
He said the proposed increase in the GSL from 1 per cent to 3 per cent had sparked debate, with proponents arguing that Ghana was yet to fully capture economic rent from its natural resources.
However, the Chamber emphasized that mineral rent, the residual value after covering extraction costs and investor returns has historically averaged below 3 per cent of GDP.
He said while gold prices had surged in recent years, the Chamber noted that not all mining companies enjoyed proportional profit increases due to varying operational costs and investment needs.
Additionally, the levy would impact manganese and bauxite producers, even though these minerals have not experienced the same price hikes as gold, creating an uneven financial burden.
Despite these concerns, the Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources and Finance for a sustainable solution.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance local participation in the sector, including initiatives with the Ghana Stock Exchange and the Minerals Commission to encourage the listing of mining firms.
Between 2020 and 2023, Chamber members spent an annual average of $2.87 billion on local goods and services while contributing $1.19 billion in taxes and $32 million in corporate social investments.
Furthermore, about 75 per cent of mineral revenues were repatriated through Ghanaian financial institutions, countering claims that investors retain a disproportionate share offshore.
The Chamber also renewed its call for a legislative framework similar to the Petroleum Revenue Management Act to ensure greater transparency and accountability in mining revenue utilization.
Mr Nantogmah expressed the Chamber’s support for increased funding for the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GSA) to enhance resource assessment and position Ghana for independent mineral development or strategic partnerships.
It also commended recent government efforts to curb illegal mining and protect the country’s forests and water bodies.
“The Ghana Chamber of Mines reaffirmed its dedication to working with all stakeholders to maximize the country’s mineral resources for the collective benefit of citizens”, it added.

The Head of Public Relations for Dancehall star Stonebwoy’s Burniton Music Group (BMG), Vida Adutwumwaa, has stated that Stonebwoy faces no real competition in the race for the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) Artiste of the Year (AOTY) category.
Stonebwoy, the reigning AOTY, is up against strong contenders, including King Promise, Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke, Joe Mettle, King Paluta, and Team Eternity Ghana.
However, according to Adutwumwaa, Stonebwoy’s unmatched impact in the year under review secures his victory.
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, she cited some of the artiste’s major hit songs as evidence of his influence.
“With regard to the category definition, which places a premium on the artiste with the highest audience appeal and the most nominations, no one in that category surpasses Stonebwoy.
“First, Stonebwoy has three major hits—Psalm 23, Ekelebe, and Jiggle and Whine, from his Up and Running album, all of which have been nominated in various categories in this year’s TGMAs. No other artiste in the calendar year can boast of such a record.
“Imagine a solid 13-track album featuring Wyclef Jean, Spice, Odumodublvck, Ginton IR Sais, Duncan Mighty, and Amaria BB, an album that has gained popularity not only in Ghana but also in the Caribbean and globally,” she explained.
Adutwumwaa further highlighted Stonebwoy’s numerous nominations at the 2025 TGMAs, as well as his impact on international platforms.
“This year, Stonebwoy received eight nominations, making him the most-nominated artiste at the 2025 TGMA. None of his contenders in the AOTY category comes close to that record.
“His street credibility is unmatched, and his shows are always sold out—not just in Ghana, but internationally, as seen during his recent UK tour,” she added.
Addressing arguments that, since Stonebwoy has already won AOTY twice, the award should go to a rising star, Adutwumwaa insisted that the decision must be merit-based.
“For those saying he has won it before and should leave it for the younger artistes, they need to understand that Stonebwoy’s brand is built on hard work and consistency.”
“His consistency has made him the people’s favorite performer and Ghana’s biggest music export. We shouldn’t compromise on excellence just to reward new entrants into the AOTY category,” she stated.

The executives of the BlueLight Traders Association (BTLA) have rendered an apology to the Minister of Interior, Mohammed-Muntaka Mubarak, after initially rejecting his donation of food supplies following the recent fire outbreak at Adum Market.
In a statement signed by the association’s interim executives, the leaders condemned the actions of the individuals involved, describing the incident as unfortunate, according to a report by 3news.com.gh.
They clarified that the behavior of a few individuals did not reflect the views of the association.
“We sincerely apologize to Hon. Muntaka for this regrettable occurrence, believing strongly that this action was a result of misunderstanding and miscommunication among some members. In distressing times like these, frustrations and emotions can run high, sometimes leading to unintended expressions of displeasure. However, such conduct does not represent the values or intentions of the Association as a whole,” the statement read.
They also appealed for the return of the donated items to be properly distributed to the affected traders.
On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, during the minister’s visit to the BlueLight area to commiserate with affected victims, he donated food supplies, particularly to mothers and children who had lost their livelihoods.

A Ghanaian citizen, Ebenezer Osei-Owusu, has petitioned the Supreme Court to stop President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of State from proceeding with the processes outlined in Article 146(6) of the Constitution regarding the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.
This legal action follows the presidency’s disclosure that it has received three separate petitions seeking the Chief Justice’s removal. In response, President Mahama forwarded these petitions to the Council of State for advice and potential further action.
In his writ, Osei-Owusu argues that the president has no constitutional authority to forward such petitions without first determining a prima facie case against the Chief Justice and providing her with copies of the petitions.
“A declaration that, upon a true interpretation of Articles 146(1), (6), and (8) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and of the decision of the Supreme Court in the case of Agyei Twum v. Attorney General & Akwatey [2005-2006] SCGLR 732 (Writ No. J1/7/2006) dated 12 July 2006, a determination of a prima facie case by the President of the Republic of Ghana in consultation with the Council of State on a petition for the removal of the Chief Justice cannot be made without first furnishing the Chief Justice with a copy or copies of the petition(s) seeking her removal and allowing her to comment on them,” his writ states.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Torkornoo has formally written to President Mahama, requesting copies of the petitions against her.
She has also sought a seven-day window to respond before any further action is taken under Articles 146(6) and 146(7) of the Constitution.
Bisola Ajimobi Kola-Daisi, the first child of the immediate past governor of Oyo State, late Abiola Ajimobi is dead.

Accra, March 27, GNA – Mrs. Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Presidential Adviser and Special Aide to the President, has urged women in leadership positions to create pathways for others to rise.
She said that modern Ghanaian women should focus not only on their personal achievements but also on the opportunities they create for others.
“It is not enough to be educated anymore; it is not enough to be first in class; it is not even enough to arrive,” Mrs. Mogtari said during the launch of the Yellow Ladies Network, a women’s group established by MTN Ghana to empower and inspire women, in Accra.
“It is bigger and better when you build a whole city and invite others to help you build; making sure that we create an environment that is safe for other women to want to walk through; to make an opportunity available to other women just waiting for that; just make it happen for that other young woman,” she said.
Mrs. Mogtari also pointed out that there were plenty of opportunities and open doors for women, especially young ones, to succeed.
She encouraged young women to make the most of these opportunities.
“This is certainly not a generation of females who do not know what to do. It is also not a generation of females who have no opportunities or females who do not have any doors opened for them.
“Please all we have to do is to step up, step out,” she said.
The Presidential Adviser advised young women to develop a positive attitude towards work, find expression in whatever they did, build good habits, and cultivate valuable networks to reach higher heights.
She stressed the importance of attitude, stating that much could be achieved by adopting a positive approach to everything.
“These are three things that I will leave with you; for me I think that work on your attitude, nothing beats a positive attitude. Secondly find expression…and thirdly build positive habits,” she advised.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has inaugurated an 11-member committee to oversee the reversal of the double-track system in Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) to a single-track system.

The CJ’s request also comes at a time when the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Assafuah, has filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court questioning the procedure being used to handle the petitions.
In the view of the plaintiff, who is being represented by Godfred Dame, the former Attorney-General, a Chief Justice ought to be alerted of the petitions to give a response before the President can consult the Council of State on the petitions.
The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the three petitions have been forwarded to the Council of State in line with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
While the specific grounds for the petitions remain undisclosed, the process marks the first step in a constitutional procedure that could lead to significant changes in Ghana’s judiciary.
The Council of State is expected to review the petitions and provide guidance to the President on the appropriate course of action.
In her letter to the President, Chief Justice Torkornoo requested a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations against her before further steps are taken.

The late founding memeber of Osibisa, Teddy Osei
Teddy Osei of Osibisa Group Fame was not just an influential leader of a group of highly successful world-class musicians but a ‘Legend of Legends’.
Having been a global icon, an illustrious son of Ghana, a unique cultural ambassador to the world, and a trailblazer who broke through the world of then-accepted Western music with raw, authentic African music based on drums and percussion.
Ghana had just come out of colonial rule in 1957, being the first African country south of the Sahara to have done so. At that time anything African was unknown or little known, so it was hard work, dedication and focus with passion to succeed that caused them to break through the charts in the UK, the US, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, Asia and Africa.
In the 1970s, they were too hot to handle, filling stadia and huge concert halls to capacity with their followers and fans for live performances.
Their live performances were simply electrifying. This caused them to produce six of their eighteen albums live. The first being the double album – The Black Magic Night live at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Osibisa’s timeless music still has a large following in Ghana. In the 70s and 80s, they filled both Accra and Kumasi stadia to capacity with their infectious live performances.
Making it in rows on the world stage caused them to attract a huge influx of tourists to Ghana, putting Ghana solidly on the world map culturally.
In 1977, the Osibisa Group was at the Black Arts and Cultural Festival in Lagos, Nigeria. They played live at the Lagos National Theatre and Tafawa Balewa Square. It was a huge success. They made their way to Ghana from Lagos, where they raised substantial funds for the construction of the National Theatre in Accra.
Francis Teddy Osei had gone to England on a Ghanaian government scholarship to study music.
He first formed a band called Cat’s Paw. He later invited Sol Amarfio and Mac Tontoh to join him. He had formed a band in Ghana earlier called the Comets and had played with Sol and Mac, so they were not new to him.
He formed the Osibisa Group with Sol Amarfio (drums), Mac Tontoh (trumpet), and together with Wendell Richardson (lead guitar and vocals) – Antigua, Lasisi Amoa (percussions and tenor saxophone (Nigeria)), Spartacus R (bass from Grenada), and Robert Bailey (keyboards – Trinidad).
The original band universally known as the Beautiful Seven embarked on a musical diversity that blended diverse genres, including Afro rock, progressive rock, Highlife, calypso and Afrobeat. Their sound resonated with audiences worldwide, making them one of the most successful African heritage bands in London.
Throughout the 1970s, Osibisa toured the world, captivating audiences in Japan, the UK, India, the US, Europe and Africa. Their infectious rhythms and vibrant performances transcended borders, contributing significantly to the establishment of world music and Afro-rock as marketable genres.
Hits like ‘Sunshine Day’. ‘Dance the Body Music’ the coffee song left an enduring legacy. Just as Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah won independence for Ghana in 1957 and brought awareness to blacks all over the world, so has Teddy Osei’s Osibisa caused the acceptance globally of the original drumbeat of Africa – crisscross rhythms that explode with happiness.
Teddy Osei, the legend of legends, mortal remains, will be in Ghana on the 28th of March 2025 at 7:55pm by British Airways Aircraft Flight No BASO1.
The body will be met at the airport by the Musicians Union of Ghana led by its president, Bessa Simmons; Okyerema Asante, the ace iconic master drummer, will be in attendance with some cultural groups.
Arrangements are being made for a vigil concert and laying in state on the forecourt of the State House. There will also be a free tribute concert night in his honour on the 4th of April at the SG Mall in Kumasi before his burial in his hometown of Kyirapatre in Kumasi Metropolis on the 5th of April 2025 and Thanksgiving on the 6th of April at the same venue.
Marlyn Keable, the current manager of the group, will be in Ghana with two original members of the ‘Beautiful Seven’, Dell Richardson and Robert Bailey, to pay their respects to the Legend of Legends.

The Black Stars’ impressive performances against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers became a major topic of debate during a parliamentary sitting on March 25, 2025.
The Black Stars secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Chad on March 21, 2025, followed by a comfortable 3-0 win against Madagascar on March 25, 2025.

During parliamentary discussions, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, attributed the team’s success to President Mahama’s visit to the squad.
“Prior to our game against Chad, the president personally met the players and attended their training sessions. The minister was also present with them throughout. We can all conclude that, due to the encouragement and unwavering support from the government, the team secured a 5-0 win against Chad and a 3-0 victory away against Madagascar. Indeed, we can all agree that the real Black Stars are back,” he stated.
The MP for the Bodi Constituency, Sampson Ahi, supported his colleague’s assertion and commended the president.
“I was particularly pleased to see President Mahama visit the team before the match against Chad. If you listened to the fatherly advice he gave the players, you would understand how it helped them. We must express our gratitude to the President for that inspirational message, which contributed to the team scoring eight goals in two matches,” Ahi said.
However, Minority MPs in Parliament strongly rejected these claims, insisting that President Mahama’s visit had no direct impact on the team’s performance.
“Mr. Speaker, it is not just about what we see; there are many things that happen behind the scenes. So, I expect that we don’t simply attribute the team’s success to the president’s visit. They all have fathers, and I believe that before they left home, their fathers also gave them advice. It was not the president’s words alone that led to their victories,” argued Abena Osei-Asare, the MP for Atiwa East.
The MP for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, also noted that the team was already performing well in the qualifiers before President Mahama took office.
“I want to put on record that the current minister inherited a Black Stars team that was already leading the World Cup qualifying group. We asked them to at least win the next two matches, which they did, securing the six points we needed,” he stated.
