Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hürzeler has hinted that Tariq Lamptey could return before the end of the season.

The Ghana international missed the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar after sustaining an injury.

He also missed the 2-2 draw against Manchester City, having sat out the previous game against Fulham due to suspension.

Speaking ahead of the Seagulls’ FA Cup quarterfinal game against Nottingham Forest, the German manager said Lamptey could return to action before the season concludes.

“Tariq will be out for a longer time—he has an ankle injury,” Hürzeler said.

“I think there’s a chance that we will see him back before the end of the season. He is a good healer, I have great trust in my medical staff and in Tariq’s mindset to be back on the pitch as quickly as possible.

“There’s a chance that he will be back in several weeks,” he added.

Despite his absence, the Black Stars beat Chad 5-0 and Madagascar 3-0, putting themselves in pole position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from Group I.

ECG awarded 142 contracts under the NPP government but zero went to the board for approval

0

Energy Minister, John Jinapor recently addressed the men of the press and while speaking, he revealed that the ECG awarded 142 contracts under the NPP government but zero went to the board for approval.

“In his Words”

“In 2022, If you look at their procurement, single source was 33, board approval was zero, what it means was that the whole of 2022, and you can check from page 12, you will see the table. The table explained the excessive use of procurement as opposed to more competitive methods, of the 142 contracts awarded, zero went to the board for approval, but when it goes to the board, they

have a nine member team that would evaluate it. Then in 2023, 703 contracts were awarded but only 21 went to the board, then 2024, 601 contracts were awarded, only 7 went to the board, 425 single source so you can clearly see that, that’s where the problem is coming from”.

“It’s the MD who awards the contract you know, they are two ways, you take the contract to the board for approval, before you even execute it, or you execute it based on the limit, and like I said, he has a limit of one million dollars so he can choose to sign 10 or 5 contracts everyday within that threshold, so by the end of the year you have a lot of contracts, but all these contracts will not go to the board”, John Jinapor said.

ICU urges Bank of Ghana to reduce 25% Corporate Tax on rural banks

0

The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has called on the Bank of Ghana to reduce the 25 percent corporate tax imposed on rural and community banks across the country.

According to ICU, this has affected the operational cost of those banks resulting in poor service delivery.

General Secretary of ICU, Morgan Ayawine made the call when he addressed members of ICU at Tamale in the Northern Region ahead of its National Quadrennial Delegates Conference slated for August this year.

“Some of the fiscal policies seem to create and work against the growth and sustainability of the rural and community banks. A classic example of such fiscal policy that militate against the ability of the rural and community banks to continue to effectively operate, is the imposition of the 25 percent corporate tax on their returns which undoubtedly affects their growth, development and their sustainability.”

“We therefore call on the Bank of Ghana to take a second look at the 25 percent corporate tax and reduce it so as to minimize its impact on the operations of the rural and community banks,” he urged.

Mr Ayawine expressed concern about the locked-up funds of the rural and community banks in some investments.

“The locked-up funds of the rural and community banks at Gold Coast Investment Company is a great concern as it is equally affecting the banks’ operations. We appeal to government to facilitate the release of the locked-up funds to help the rural and community banks prosecute their businesses and remain relevant in the banking sector of the economy,” he said.

The General Secretary of ICU also called on government to earmark funds to revive the operations of the Produce Buying Company.

” PBC PLC is one of the state-owned enterprises that is financially distressed and needs urgent resourcing and to make it once again viable and profitable as in times past to bring relief to farmers and the workers whose fate has been hanging in the balance for a long time now. It is not good for this once vibrant company set up with the nations scarce resources to collapse and pass into oblivion,” he said.

“In this light, we wish to use this platform to appeal to government to urgently bail out PBC PLC to enable it bounce back to business,” he pleaded.

Thousands of Israelis demonstrate for new hostage deal

According to Israeli media, several thousand people attended a number of rallies in just the coastal city of Tel Aviv.

Some protests were explicitly directed against the right-wing government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The organizers of one rally spoke of tens of thousands of participants.

Iair Horn, who was released from captivity in Gaza in mid-February, criticized the renewed military operations in the coastal territory in a speech.

The fighting endangered all hostages, Horn said: “I was there, I heard tanks pass overhead, I walked through tunnels during the bombardments.”

He also demanded the release of all persons still being held by Hamas, including his younger brother.

Footage from the Hostage and Missing Families Forum showed several former captives in the crowd at the protest in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square.

There were also demonstrations in other places in the country, including Haifa and Jerusalem, in favour of a Gaza agreement with Hamas.

According to media reports, more than 100,000 people gathered throughout Israel last Saturday for demonstrations, some of which were critical of the government.

Further large protests took place over the course of the week, particularly in Jerusalem.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its weight behind traders at Adum Market in Kumasi, who have expressed their desire to lead the reconstruction of their stalls following a devastating fire outbreak.

The party cautioned that relying solely on government intervention could lead to unnecessary delays.

Speaking after the NPP donated GHC 100,000 to the affected traders, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, acknowledged the traders’ proactive stance and affirmed the NPP’s support for their efforts.

“The market women have agreed to come in and help rather than waiting for the government to lead the process, and we in the NPP support that cause,” he said.

Kodua further assured the traders and the people of Asanteman that the party remained committed to their welfare, regardless of whether it was in government or opposition.

“We know our flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, and other dignitaries will be visiting, but we can assure the good people of this market and Asanteman that the NPP will never turn its back on them. Even in opposition, we have managed to raise funds to support them.”

He also used the opportunity to urge the government to take immediate steps to assist the traders financially, suggesting that a seed fund be set up to facilitate the rebuilding process.

“We are pleading with the government to do the same here by setting up seed money to support the market men and women.”

Former Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has praised the inclusion of Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan in the Black Stars’ setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Appiah currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the team’s Management Committee and oversees player relations. Although Gyan holds no official role, he has been actively engaging with the squad before their recent matches against Chad and Madagascar.

Gyan was present as the Black Stars secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium. He then traveled with the team to Morocco, where they continued their impressive form with a 3-0 win against Madagascar.

Reflecting on their involvement, Akonnor emphasized the significant impact of the two former captains on the team’s performance.

“The inclusion of former players Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan has positively impacted the team, boosting confidence with their experience and leadership,” he told Asempa FM.

The Black Stars will reconvene in June for a four-nation tournament in England before facing Chad and Mali in Matchday 7 and 8 of the qualifiers in September.

Ghanaian fishing vessel attacked: Three Chinese crew members kidnapped

Three Chinese crew members have been kidnapped following a suspected pirate attack on the Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel Mengxin 1 in Ghanaian waters yesterday.

The missing crew members—the captain, chief mate, and chief engineer—were discovered to be absent after the attackers left the vessel.

Reports suggest that seven armed men stormed the ship around 5:53 p.m., firing warning shots and forcing several crew members to seek refuge in a secure area.

The attackers reportedly remained on board for nearly three hours, rounding up the crew on deck and confiscating their phones before departing.

“When the crew emerged, they discovered that the ship’s captain, chief mate, and chief engineer—all Chinese nationals—were missing and are believed to have been kidnapped. Due to poor signal coverage at sea, the crew had to sail closer to shore before they could report the incident,” a statement issued today (March 29, 2025) by the Director-General of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, said.

Investigations underway

The statement confirmed that the vessel had since arrived safely at Tema Fishing Harbour, where Marine Police and Naval Intelligence officers had begun questioning the crew.

It also stated that authorities had alerted neighbouring countries through the ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) in Accra, as part of broader regional efforts to combat maritime piracy under the Yaoundé security framework.

The statement assured that all necessary measures were being taken to track down the perpetrators and secure the safe return of the abducted officers.

Were we not in this country when we heard that Zanetor Rawlings had been given a post?—Ayikoi Otoo

0

According to MyNewsGH report, Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Ayikoi Otoo, has expressed serious concerns over the spread of misinformation surrounding the ongoing process that could potentially lead to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile programme, Otoo questioned the accuracy and credibility of certain reports circulating in the media regarding the matter.

Otoo referred to past instances where false information had been widely disseminated, citing a particular case involving Zanetor Rawlings. He noted, “I’m not surprised because were we not in this country when we heard that Zanetor Rawlings had been given a post, only for us to realize that nothing of that existed?” Otoo pointed out that even official-looking documents, such as those bearing the letterhead of the Office of the President, turned out to be false, raising doubts about the veracity of reports surrounding the Chief Justice’s petition.

His comments come amid growing public interest and heated debate about the petitions filed against Chief Justice Torkornoo, though the specifics of these petitions remain undisclosed. The lack of clear information, combined with conflicting reports, has fueled widespread speculation and raised concerns over the dissemination of misinformation.

In addition to Otoo’s remarks, private legal practitioner Kwame Adofo has voiced his concerns about Ghana’s constitutional framework regarding the removal of a Chief Justice. During a discussion on The Forum on Asaase Radio, Adofo criticized the current system, which he believes leaves the head of the judiciary vulnerable to political influence. He highlighted the inconsistency in how the Constitution treats the removal of other Superior Court judges versus that of the Chief Justice.

Adofo argued, “The question of making a prima facie case is not left to a politician or an ordinary person; it is left to a judge, who happens to be the Chief Justice. But when it comes to the Chief Justice, that determination rests in the hands of the President, and that is dangerous.”

Russian drone strike on Dnipro as tensions rise over energy strikes

0

Kiev/Moscow, Mar. 29, (dpa/GNA) – At least four people died and 21 were injured on Saturday in a Russian drone strike on Dnipro in central Ukraine, while Moscow accused Kiev of intensifying its attacks on energy facilities despite a ceasefire on the sector.

The military governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, Serhiy Lysak, said there were explosions, several fires and severe damage in the city.

He published photos of the devastation on his Telegram channel. “It was a difficult night,” Lysak wrote.

Russian attacks on Ukraine have continued in recent weeks despite attempts by the United States to forge a ceasefire in the conflict, more than three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

US mediators had agreed with both warring countries in separate talks on a partial ceasefire, during which no more energy infrastructure would be bombed.

Civilian infrastructure is not part of the agreement.

The latest incident in Dnipro saw Moscow launch two dozen attacks with drones, most of which were shot down, Ukrainian authorities said.

Lysak said 13 people needed hospital treatment for injuries, with several houses destroyed in the fires.

Tower blocks and public buildings were damaged and a fire also broke out in a restaurant complex.

“Dozens of cars were destroyed,” he added.

The industrial city has been repeatedly targeted in Russian airstrikes.

Moscow accuses Kiev of stepping up attacks on energy facilities

Meanwhile, Russia accused Ukraine of intensifying its attacks on energy facilities.

The number of such attacks in the southern Kursk and Belgorod regions has risen, according to the Ministry of Defence in Moscow.

Power outages had occurred following strikes on high-voltage power lines and substations.

This contradicted the assurances of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about an end to these attacks, the ministry said in a post on Telegram.

Earlier, Zelensky also lashed out at Russia for allegedly still targeting Ukraine’s energy grid.

According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the order on March 18 after a phone call with his US counterpart Donald Trump.

The information provided by both sides on the damage could not immediately be verified.

However, both notably now publish comprehensive lists of damage and violations for the first time, after there had been little or no such reporting in the past.

Russia’s defence ministry in particular always reported the shooting down of Ukrainian drones without reporting any hits or damage.

Ghanaians React After Bongo Ideas Sends This Birthday Message To Former President Akufo-Addo

0

Ghanaians across social media have been buzzing with reactions after controversial social media commentator, Albert Hype, popularly known as Bongo Ideas, sent a striking birthday message to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Born on March 29, 1944, former President Akufo-Addo marks his 81st birthday today, March 29, 2025. Having served as Ghana’s 13th president from 2017 to 2025, his leadership has been a subject of much discussion, drawing both praise and criticism over the years.

As messages of goodwill poured in from political figures, celebrities, and citizens alike, one message stood out and became the center of online debates. Bongo Ideas took to social media to wish the former president well, but his words carried a tone that many found thought-provoking.

His message read:

“Happy Birthday, Akufo-Addo. May God handle you according to how you have handled Ghana. May whatever Ghanaians endured during your tenure be your reward a hundredfold. May whatever you deserve come to you, and may you not escape the fruits of your deeds. Amen.”

The post quickly went viral, garnering thousands of shares, comments, and reactions. While some Ghanaians applauded the message as an honest reflection of the country’s struggles under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, others found it too harsh, arguing that birthdays should be a time for goodwill and not criticism.

“Bongo Ideas never misses an opportunity to make a statement! This is the best birthday message Akufo-Addo could get—straight to the point,” one user commented.

Another, however, disagreed: “No matter what, let’s respect our elders. This is unnecessary on someone’s birthday.”

Despite the mixed reactions, Bongo Ideas stood by his words, stating that he only wished for fairness in the way leaders are remembered and judged. “If he did well, then this prayer will be a blessing. If not, then he will reap what he sowed,” he tweeted in response to the backlash.

As Ghanaians continue to reflect on Akufo-Addo’s legacy, it is clear that his presidency has left a lasting impact—one that will be discussed for years to come. Whether Bongo Ideas’ message is seen as a fair critique or an unnecessary jab, one thing is certain: it has sparked a conversation that won’t die down anytime soon.

“President Does Not Have the Power to Act Alone” – Sammy Gyamfi Defends Mahama in CJ’s Removal Saga

0

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has dismissed claims that President John Mahama acted unlawfully in forwarding petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo to the Council of State as reported by Ghana Web.

In a statement on his X account, Gyamfi defended Mahama’s decision, emphasizing that the President is following due process as outlined in Ghana’s legal framework.

He stated that the law requires the President to consult the Council of State before making any determination on such petitions.

Citing legal precedent, Gyamfi explained that Mahama is merely ensuring compliance with constitutional requirements.

“The President does not have the power to make this determination on his own but must do so in consultation with the Council of State,” he stated.

According to him, the petitions have been submitted in line with the procedures established by the Supreme Court in the Agyei Twum v. Attorney General case.

He further clarified that Mahama’s letter to the Council of State sought their input before taking any action on the matter.

Gyamfi stressed that the approach taken does not violate any law, dismissing suggestions of misconduct.

He maintained that Mahama’s actions are fully within legal bounds and align with established judicial processes.

Concluding his remarks, Gyamfi insisted that the former President has not acted improperly, as his actions are in line with constitutional dictates and legal precedent.

“I think that this is just a great avenue for us to showcase our indigenous meals and for me, I think that’s the way to go. Then, all about dialysis, getting sick frequently—everything will come to a stop.

“Let’s stop eating the foreign foods. Our made-in-Ghana foods are what we should focus on. Let’s have our children taste and enjoy our indigenous meals because that is all we have. It is who we are.”

Freda Afrifa, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dotty Sip and Bites, applauded the organisers of the programme and expressed hope of making good sales.

“Yes (it’s a good programme) and it should (be encouraged) because it’s a very nice programme. It brings people around,” she said.

The CEO of Pork 101, Selasi Agbesi, said it was her fifth year participating and encouraged Citi FM and Channel One TV to continue the initiative.

“It’s a good thing. We started from the bazaar and now it’s a festival, and so it’s a thing. So you see other things which will help other people, especially the diasporans, enjoy our indigenous foods,” she said.

Attendees were treated to a diverse array of traditional dishes, including Tuo Zaafi, banku, and fufu accompanied by assorted soups.

The festival also provided a platform for dialogues on food security, sustainability, and the importance of preserving Ghana’s culinary heritage in an era of globalization.

Beyond the gastronomic experience, the event created opportunities for vendors to connect with consumers, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Patrons left inspired to integrate more indigenous foods into their diets, carrying forward the festival’s mission to celebrate and sustain Ghana’s rich food culture.

The 2025 “Back to Your Village” Food Festival stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional cuisine and its role in uniting Ghanaians while promoting health and local economic growth.

One of the most emotional moments at the late Akua Donkor’s funeral was when her former running mate, Philip Kwabena Agyemang, popularly known as Roman Fada, was seen consoling her distraught daughter.

He was seen warmly embracing the deceased’s daughter, who cried uncontrollably and appeared inconsolable.

Other grieving family members captured at the scene, also sought comfort from him.

Roman Fada was among the many dignitaries who gathered to pay their last respect to the late Akua Donkor at her funeral, which took place on Saturday, March 29, 2025, in Ejuratia, in the Ashanti Region.

She passed away on October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra.

Akua Donkor was a passionate advocate for farmers, women, and journalists. She Donkor stood out in Ghanaian politics for her commitment to grassroots communities, often using a bold and comical approach to capture public attention.

Popularly recognised by her slogan, “3ny3 nono,” her political journey began when she was elected as an Assemblywoman for Herman.

Her first attempt at the presidency was in 2012, but she was disqualified for failing to meet the requirements.

Undeterred, she continued her political aspirations, later supporting Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in that election year.

In 2016, a fire destroyed her party’s headquarters in Kabu, Akropong Constituency, Eastern Region, ultimately disqualifying her from the election.

Kintampo, the neglected heart of Ghana

0

In the geographical heart of Ghana, where the nation’s center is said to lie, a single coordinate marked by a withering pavement block is all that identifies this significant location.

While the country’s coastal regions and major cities pulse with development, the center remains a stark reminder of uneven progress.

As part of our Ghana Month series, Belinda Tetteh explores the heart of Ghana.

The symbolic “Centre of Ghana” site in Kintampo, once envisioned as a national landmark, now tells a story of faded potential.

George Mensah narrates the history behind the discovery of Ghana’s geographical center.

“You can trace it from longitude 0°, spanning from London through Tamale to Kintampo. The discovery cannot be attributed to one person, but we can relate it to George Akim Ferguson, who led the survey, along with others.”

He expresses deep disappointment at how a once-promising tourist attraction now bears the marks of years of neglect and underinvestment.

“It also serves as the center of the world, but we lack the needed development.”

Shaibu Fuseini, a youth leader for the Kintampo Municipality, highlights the tourism potential of the area, citing historical landmarks such as one of the oldest police stations built under Kwame Nkrumah.

“Right behind us is one of the oldest police stations built by Kwame Nkrumah, which could be developed into a tourist site, but it has been abandoned.”

Simon Kuffuor notes that several stakeholders, including former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Isaac Baffoe, have visited the site with promises of development—yet the site remains in limbo.

“Various stakeholders have been here with several promises, but to no avail. This place has now turned into a smoking area for junkies.”

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Aggrey Santana, acknowledges the site’s tourism potential but stresses the need for collaboration with traditional authorities to drive its development.

“The traditional authority would have to reach out to us for collaboration. Then we can partner to build the place because we have the capacity.”

The question remains: will the heart of Ghana continue to beat faintly, or will it finally receive the attention it deserves?

The answer will shape not just the region’s future but also Ghana’s broader development.

Sylvester Mensah, Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM), has praised Channel One TV and Citi FM for hosting the annual “Back to Your Village” Food Festival.

Speaking on Day 1 of the highly attended event on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly forecourt, Mensah highlighted the festival’s impact in promoting Ghanaian cuisine and providing vendors with a valuable platform to showcase their offerings.
