Use position of influence to transform society — Police Service Chaplain General

0

The Chaplain General of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Very Rev. George Arthur, has stressed the need for Ghanaians occupying influential positions in society to use that responsibility to transform the nation without expecting any material rewards.

He said the national reconstruction programme would not succeed without the commitment and sacrifices of responsible people in society.

Very Rev. Arthur made the call at a well-attended ceremony at the Joy House of Peace Chapel International at Lashibi, near Tema, when the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, attended a thanksgiving service in appreciation to the Almighty God for his elevation to the topmost position in the Ghana Police Service.

The ceremony attracted many dignitaries, including top personnel such as all the 25 Regional Police Commanders or their representatives, the clergy, other ranks of the police service, religious groups and traditional rulers from the length and breadth of the country.

Expectation

Very Rev. Arthur advised COP Yohuno to strive to maintain the prevailing peace, unity and stability in the country.

“What the police officers expect from you is to unite, and not divide the rank and file,” he emphasised.

The Chaplain General enjoined the IGP to strive to improve upon the successes of the outgone administration and also correct the wrongs.

Very Rev. Arthur implored IGP Yohuno to sustain the humility, assiduity, honesty, submissiveness that endeared him to the appointing authorities, adding that he should consult  past IGPs for the success of his administration.

He advised him never to forget the source of his blessing which came from the Omnipotent God, and further admonished Mr Yohuno to prove to all and sundry that he was the best choice.

In his address, Mr Yohuno expressed his gratitude to God for taking him through the difficult times in his life.

He was also grateful to President Mahama, Vice President Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang and the Council of State for bestowing such a gigantic position to him and promised to live up to expectation.

He appealed to all and sundry to pray for him  to discharge his duties to the admiration of all Ghanaians.

The General Overseer of the church, Prophetess Salomey Menzo, urged all Ghanaians to pray for Mr Yohuno for his administration to be second to none in the country.

To encourage the IGP not to forget his reliance on God, the General Overseer presented a new Bible to him.

The Country Senior Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Ghana, Vish Ashiagbor, has urged the government to prioritise macroeconomic concerns affecting businesses, including currency and exchange rate volatility, debt management, interest rates, and unemployment.

According to him, these top five challenges are the key issues businesses expect the 2025 Financial Budget to tackle.

“The top five things that businesses are concerned about and are looking forward to the budget providing solutions to [are] currency or exchange rate volatility, the debt strengthening of the cedi, which is basically tied to exchange rate, and then, of course, interest rates, and a reduction in unemployment,” he stated.

Mr Ashiagbor’s remarks were based on a survey conducted by PwC, which assessed business expectations ahead of the 2025 Financial Budget presented last week by the Minister of Finance.

Speaking at PwC’s Ghana National Budget Digest 2025, he highlighted that businesses believe the informal sector should contribute more in taxes. Additionally, they anticipate expenditure cuts, particularly in public sector payroll and government spending on goods and services.

He explained that businesses want a more balanced and efficient allocation of resources to drive sustainable economic growth.

Mr Ashiagbor also noted that businesses have identified key priority sectors that should receive greater investment and policy support. These include energy, agriculture, transportation and infrastructure, the cocoa sector, and education.

“Business leaders believe that we should be focusing on energy, agriculture, transport, or, broadly speaking, infrastructure—because energy also falls into the infrastructure category,” he said.

He stressed that these sectors are critical drivers of economic growth and would significantly contribute to national development if adequately supported.

Reports have emerged that the suspect arrested in connection with the murder of late investigative journalist Ahmed Suale allegedly leaked his pictures to a Ghanaian politician.

According to a report by MyJoyonline, a source at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service disclosed that a high-ranking member is attempting to interfere in the police’s investigation.

The said officer is allegedly pushing for the suspect to be granted police inquiry bail rather than being immediately processed to court.

This, however, has created unrest within the police administration as the investigators are determined to resist the influence of the said officer.

It emerged on Monday, March 17, 2025, that the Ghana Police Service arrested Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, in connection with the killing of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale in 2019.

Reports indicate that Amakye, a former colleague of Suale at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, allegedly leaked his photos to a politician before the tragic incident.

Following the murder, Amakye fled to the UK but recently returned to Ghana, leading to his arrest at a salon in Amasaman-Adease.

KZN man sentenced to life in jail for raping 6-year-old neighbor

A 58-year-old KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) man has been sentenced to life in prison for raping his six-year-old neighbour.

The man appeared in the Madadeni Regional Court on Monday, where the sentence was handed down.

He raped the little girl in October 2018 in Osizweni, Newcastle.

Sentencing

During court proceedings, State Prosecutor Cindy Alberts handed in a Victim Impact Statement (VIS) compiled by the girl’s mother.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the mother included the grim details of the little girl’s ordeal in the statement.

“She said that the incident had a significant impact on the complainant, affecting her academically, emotionally and physically.

“The accused was sentenced accordingly, and the court found him unsuitable to work with children. In addition, the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders,” Ramkisson-Kara said.

Trial

During the trial, the court heard the man and the little girl were known to each other.

The six-year-old was on her way to play with her friends when a man called her and gave her money to buy cigarettes for him.

Rape

Ramkisson-Kara said the girl returned with the cigarettes, he grabbed her and pulled her into his house where he raped her.

“Thereafter, he threatened her, saying that he would kill her and her family if she told anyone about what had happened.

“The complainant ran home and, fearing what the accused had said, she remained silent about what had happened. A week later, her grandmother noticed that the complainant’s behaviour had changed, as she was irritable and angry,” Ramkisson-Kara said.

Sentence welcomed

The grandmother took the complainant to the Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC), where they confirmed that she had been raped.

Ramkisson-Kara said the girl only later told her grandmother that it was the man who had raped her.

“He was arrested thereafter. The NPA welcomes this successful prosecution. Sentences of this nature demonstrate that we and our partners in the justice cluster are serious about fighting the scourge of sexual offences and gender-based violence,” Ramkisson-Kara said.
