Ken Agyapong’s team cries foul over ‘staged endorsement’ at NPP Delegates Conference

0

The aftermath of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Delegates Conference held Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium has sparked controversy within the party, as key members of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team have raised concerns over what they describe as “engineered optics” favouring former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Fallouts of NPP’s sweeping constitutional reforms

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, July 20, GNA – Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday endorsed the Party’s constitutional overhaul in a bid to reform the NPP and rebuild for election 2028 and beyond.

More than 5,500 delegates met at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra to deliberate on 56 constitutional reform proposals submitted by the Constitutional Amendment Committee, led by Mr Frank Davies.

The Conference, on the theme: “Rebuilding together with our values” is the highest decision-making body of the Party.

By the close of the Conference, a total of 54 constitutional reform proposals had been accepted, with only two proposals being rejected.

One of the major reforms accepted was the complete abolition of the Special Electoral College System, and the expansion of the base of delegates who elect the party’s presidential candidate, by 40 per cent.

The reform will lead to the abolishment of Article 13(1)(9) of the NPP constitution which established the Special Electoral College.

The new structure would include members of the National Council, National Executive Committee, Regional and Constituency Executive Committees, Electoral Area Coordinators, Polling Station Executives, National Council of Elders, National Patrons, all past National Directors, sitting and past MPs, and TESCON representatives from each recognised tertiary institution.

The rest are all card-bearing ministers and deputy ministers, MMDCEs, 15 delegates from every external branch, founding members, and three representatives each from special organs of the party.

Proponents of the reform argue that the existing electoral college structure is not representative enough.

Another major reform accepted by Council would make the National Chairman of the NPP the leader of the Party at all times.

The current position makes the President the leader of the Party when the Party is in Government and the Chairman the leader of the Party when the Party is in opposition.

A key reform proposal that equally received the backing of Conference would make it compulsory for all Government appointees and Chief Executive Officers who intend to contest for elections to resign 24-Hours before the election.

Meanwhile, a proposed amendment to cut the youth age limit to 35 was rejected. This meant that the age limit for a person to contest as youth organiser in the NPP was maintained at 40.

Another amendment proposal that was roundly rejected by Congress sought to give power to Regional and Constituency Executives to have oversight responsibility in electoral area and polling station elections.

It was the case of opponents of the proposal that such arrangements could lead to undue interference in the compilation of albums for elections at the lower level.

Mr Frank Davies told the delegates that the Party would move to effect the reforms approved by Congress in due course.

The exercise was largely calm and peaceful with no recorded major incident.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, Chairman of the Congress Planning Committee, said he was delighted about the enthusiasm exhibited by members of the Party.

He said the defeat suffered by the Party in the 2024 General Election sparked disappointment, leading to a lot of “blame-gaming” discussions in the media.

He said the turnout at the Congress offered him confidence that “we will recover and move forward.”

Mr George Abankwah-Yeboah, Former Treasurer, NPP, said the Congress was a major step towards uniting and rebuilding the Party and thanked the delegates for demonstrating resilience in their quest to reform the Party.

Touching on the two motions that were rejected by Congress, Mr Abankwah-Yeboah observed that there were not enough consultations by proponents of the proposals to better explain the rationale for the reforms.

The NPP has set Saturday, January 31, 2026, for its presidential primary to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The announcement was made at a meeting of the National Executive Committee held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The decision was subsequently endorsed by the party’s National Council.

Godfred Dame lied to the Supreme Court on usage of state funds – Kofi Bentil

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has accused former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Dame, of misleading the Supreme Court of Ghana on the use of state funds for the National Cathedral project.

According to Kofi Bentil, Mr. Dame peddled falsehoods when he told the apex court that state funds would not be used for the cathedral project, except for what he termed as “seed money”, despite knowing that more public funds were being spent.

Bentil further criticised both Dame and the Supreme Court, which dismissed a case brought by James Kwabena Bomfeh, former Youth Organiser of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), challenging the use of public funds for the cathedral.

“In my view, the AG lied… I don’t know how to put this, but in short, this is one of the reasons why the present Chief Justice is facing what she’s facing. Some of us were disappointed that in the face of things, it seemed there were preconceived decisions,” he said.

He continued, “My own brother, the AG, lied because he had those facts and went and controverted what Bomfeh said. And the judges, instead of taking judicial notice, looking at the facts in front of them, lined up behind the government in the face of things that we could all see.”

Bentil added, “The belief in the government was not founded. There was evidence in front of them, and it could be checked.”

His remarks follow revelations from an audit report by Deloitte, which confirmed that state funds were indeed used for the cathedral project, contrary to assurances previously given by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed details of the report during a press briefing on July 18, 2025.

He stated that financial irregularities linked to the controversial National Cathedral project amounted to $97 million.

“National Cathedral project amounts to $58 million so far, and there is an additional outstanding $39 million payment due the contractor. This will bring the total cost incurred for the hole at the site of the project to $97 million,” Kwakye Ofosu said.

Eugene Boakye Antwi rallies NPP for unity ahead of 2028

0

At the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference, held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, Hon. Eugene Boakye Antwi, former Member of Parliament for Subin and a former Deputy Minister, delivered a bold call for unity, discipline, and forward-thinking leadership within the party.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the event, Mr Boakye Antwi stressed that the NPP’s main political adversary remains the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—not fellow party members.
His message was clear: internal divisions must be set aside if the NPP is to maintain its relevance and electoral strength.

“We have one common enemy and it’s not each other,” he said. “Victory 2028 begins with a united NPP today.”

A Call for Discipline and Modernisation

The former Deputy Minister underscored the need for a new era of discipline, loyalty, and collective responsibility within the party. He warned that no amount of political manoeuvring or policy crafting would secure electoral victory unless the party is united at all levels.

Responding to questions about his political future, particularly whether he intends to contest for the position of General Secretary, Mr Boakye Antwi responded with cautious assurance:

“When the time is up, I will surely contest.”

He outlined a vision for the NPP’s administrative future centred on technology, transparency, and organisational efficiency, stating that the party must modernise its operations and communications to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving political landscape.

“The NPP must not only be a ruling party but a governing institution, equipped for the future,” he added.

A Steady Hand for the Party’s Next Chapter

Mr Boakye Antwi’s remarks have since sparked conversations among party members, delegates, and grassroots organisers. Many view him as a steady and experienced hand, with deep institutional knowledge and a track record of navigating both party structures and national governance.

His potential bid for General Secretary is seen by many within the NPP as a leadership comeback that could bring cohesion and strategic direction to the party, particularly as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

As the party gears up for its next internal elections, Mr Boakye Antwi’s message resonates: the path to victory lies in unity, modernisation, and discipline.

GNAT calls for legal backing to protect reinstated PTAs

0

The President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev. Isaac Owusu, has called for the establishment of a strong legal framework to secure the recent reinstatement of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in basic and secondary schools across the country.

His appeal follows the government’s directive, announced by the Ghana Education Service (GES) on Thursday, July 17, 2025, reinstating PTAs in all pre-tertiary institutions. The move, directed by President John Dramani Mahama, reverses a 2019 policy under the previous administration that suspended PTAs and banned compulsory PTA levies, replacing them with weaker “Parent Associations” (PAs) as part of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

Addressing journalists at the opening of the “Teaching Together” workshop — a joint initiative between GNAT and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) — at the GNAT Institute for Research and Industrial Relations in Abankro, Rev. Owusu stressed that the reinstatement must be backed by law to ensure its sustainability.

Rev. Owusu noted that GNAT has long championed the revitalisation and institutionalisation of PTAs, describing them as critical platforms for fostering collaboration between parents and teachers to enhance school management and improve learning outcomes.

President Mahama had earlier, in June 2025, criticised the earlier suspension of PTAs as “unacceptable” and pledged their full restoration as part of his broader education reforms.

According to Rev. Owusu, the restoration of PTAs “effectively returns the management of schools to the community,” adding that any future reversal would represent a significant setback to inclusive governance in education.

He emphasized the need for Parliament to “enact legislation that offers legal protection to PTAs, preventing future governments from arbitrarily dismantling or sidelining them.”

Such a legislative measure, he argued, would provide the stability and long-term assurance needed for PTAs to make meaningful and sustained contributions to school development.

Husband of Ajumako market ‘baby thief’ drops chilling details

0

Husband of Rebecca Ofori, the woman accused of abducting an 11-month-old baby from Ajumako Market, has referenced years of childlessness as the reason for his wife’s crime.

He reveal chilling details of how his wife faked a pregnancy and presented the stolen child as her own.

According to police sources, Rebecca, 40, informed her husband several months ago that she was four months pregnant and needed to relocate temporarily to her mother’s home in Enyan Abaasa to prepare for the birth.

She is reported to have later returned to their home in Tarkwa Benso in the Western Region with a baby girl, claiming to have delivered safely.

However, the plot began to unfold when the baby, unfamiliar with her surroundings and caregivers, reportedly cried uncontrollably for two consecutive days.

This persistent distress, coupled with inconsistencies in Rebecca’s story, triggered the husband’s suspicions.

He told police that without alerting his wife, began making quiet inquiries in her hometown.

It was during this personal investigation that he stumbled upon news reports about a baby who had recently been stolen from Ajumako Market.

Upon confirming his fears, he promptly reached out to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ajumako District Police Command and provided them with crucial information that led to Rebecca’s arrest.

Police later confirmed that the woman and baby matched those captured on CCTV.

Rebecca Ofori is currently in custody along with the baby at the Ajumako Police Command as investigations continue.

Police say they are working to reunite the child with her biological parents while psychological support is being arranged.

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale was unintentionally pushed to the ground by a fan during a performance in Kumasi on July 19, 2025.

The incident happened while he was performing his hit song, Taking Over, which features the SM Militants, at the Golden Dew Hotel.

In a video shared on social media, the self-proclaimed Dancehall King was seen entertaining the crowd when an overly excited fan rushed onto the stage.

The fan, in an attempt to get close to Shatta Wale, ended up bumping into him while being chased by security guards.

The force of the impact caused Shatta Wale to fall onto the stage floor. Security officers quickly intervened, dragging the fan offstage.

Shatta Wale, who got back on his feet almost immediately, paused his performance to address the situation.

Upset with the situation, he expressed his frustration with the fan’s behaviour and questioned what would have happened if he had been injured.

He also used some harsh words towards the fan to show how seriously he took the matter.

Some people at the venue were heard commending Shatta Wale for staying calm and continuing the show after addressing the issue.

See rare poster of JB Danquah opposing Ghana’s Republican Constitution

0

Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah was one of the leading members of the UGCC Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah was one of the leading members of the UGCC

It is a known fact that Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah, one of the leading figures of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), was opposed to the way Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, wanted Ghana to attain independence.

While Dr Kwame Nkrumah was fighting for “self-government now”, Dr JB Danquah was for “self-government at the shortest possible time,” and he (Danquah) did all he could to ensure that the country got independence.

History shows that Dr Danquah wrote a letter to the late Queen of England, Elizabeth II, who was the Head of State of Ghana then, urging her not to assent to a law which would make Ghana a republic.

The founding member of the UGCC, it appears, even campaigned against Ghana’s Republican Constitution.

A campaign poster of Dr Danquah, which was broadcast by Max TV during a recent interview with historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong, shows him campaigning against Ghana becoming a republic.

The poster read, “Vote Dr Danquah and vote no to the Republican Constitution. Save Ghana Now!”

Anokye Frimpong, during the interview, claimed that JB Danquah’s opposition to Ghana becoming a republic was one of the ways he “betrayed the country.”

He added that this should explain why former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cancelled the celebration of July 1, 2025, as a public holiday while he was in office.

Reactions As Hawa Koomson And His Entourage Caused Another Scene At The Entrance Yesterday

0

A tense confrontation recently broke out between the security personnel stationed at a restricted zone and the entourage of Hawa Koomson, a notable Ghanaian political figure and the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East.

The dispute revolved around access to a high-security area and has since ignited public debate over the enforcement of protocol and access regulations in sensitive zones.

According to reports and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred when members of Hawa Koomson’s team attempted to enter a secured inner perimeter during an event.

However, security officials at the entry point refused to grant access to some individuals in her group, citing concerns over proper accreditation and lack of official authorization. The standoff resulted in a prolonged verbal exchange between the two sides, with neither initially willing to back down.

The security personnel maintained that all individuals, regardless of their affiliations, needed to show valid credentials before entering the area. This stance was consistent with standard operating procedures typically enforced during high-profile or restricted events to ensure safety and proper order.

On the other hand, it was reported that some members of Koomson’s entourage believed their association with the MP entitled them to unrestricted access.

This disagreement appeared to be rooted in differing expectations regarding protocol and status, leading to a standoff that lasted several minutes before eventually de-escalating without any physical conflict.

The incident quickly gained attention online after a video clip surfaced on social media, drawing mixed reactions. While some praised the security team for strictly adhering to protocol, others criticized the handling of the situation, questioning whether more respect should have been shown to a sitting member of parliament.

See some of the reactions from Ghanaians below.

Ultimately, the encounter highlights ongoing challenges surrounding access control, authority, and the balance between enforcing rules and acknowledging the roles of public officials in Ghana’s political landscape.

“We Need a Face with Vision”: Grassroots endorse Bryan Acheampong for NPP leadership

0

The 2025 National Delegates Conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has spotlighted Dr Bryan Acheampong as a key figure in the party’s future leadership conversation, with grassroots delegates and party faithful openly endorsing him as a potential presidential candidate for 2028.

Held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” the conference convened over 5,500 delegates from across the country to deliberate on internal reforms, proposed constitutional amendments, and strategies for party renewal. While discussions centred on modernising party structures and deepening grassroots engagement, much of the excitement at the event gravitated towards Dr Acheampong’s arrival.

Spontaneous chants of “BA! BA! BA!” echoed outside the stadium, reflecting what many described as an organic groundswell of support from the party base.

A Call for Visionary Leadership

Delegates and grassroots members expressed their sentiments in interviews and informal discussions throughout the event, with statements such as:

“We need a face with vision.”

“In Bryan, we have a presidential candidate that can be trusted.”

“It is Bryan and the rest.”

“In Bryan, NPP will be revived.”

“The voice of the masses is seen in Bryan.”

These remarks capture a rising mood within sections of the party yearning for generational renewal, unity, and a reinvigorated political message ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The Bryan Acheampong Factor

Dr Bryan Acheampong, the current Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, has built a reputation as a strategic thinker and responsive public servant. His stewardship of the government’s food security initiatives and his background in both public policy and national security have earned him admiration within and beyond the party ranks.

His supporters believe he has the temperament, experience, and vision to bridge party ideals with national aspirations, especially at a time when the NPP is grappling with internal factionalism and declining public trust.

Though Dr Acheampong has not formally declared his intention to contest the NPP’s flagbearer position for the 2028 elections, the conference made clear that his potential candidacy is gaining momentum. Many delegates believe his entry into the race would significantly influence party dynamics in the coming months.

Repositioning for 2028 and Beyond

Beyond personal endorsements, the conference underscored a broader party consensus: the NPP must reposition itself around a transformative leader capable of uniting factions, energising the grassroots, and appealing to a broader national electorate.

In the eyes of many, Dr Acheampong fits that profile.

10,000 Berekum residents to receive free medical care

0

Over 10,000 residents in Berekum have been targeted to benefit from free healthcare services as part of the upcoming medical outreach by Ghana Medical Relief (GMR). The initiative, scheduled to run from July 21 to July 25, 2025, will provide a wide range of essential health interventions to residents in Berekum and surrounding communities.

The President of GMR, Dr Samuel Owusu, announced the initiative during the launch of the outreach in Accra last Friday.

He explained that the project aims to close the healthcare gap in deprived communities. “We have witnessed cases where people have never met a healthcare provider in their entire lives,” the President said. “Our goal is to ensure that individuals gain access to preventive care before their conditions become severe.”

The GMR, a registered non-profit organisation in both Ghana and the United States, will deploy 110 medical volunteers, including doctors, nurses, dentists, and surgeons, for the outreach.
According to the President, the mission aligns with GMR’s philosophy of “providing healthcare one village at a time.”
The outreach will also offer services in general medicine, paediatrics, dentistry, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, and psychiatry.

Support, sustainability

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Dr Owusu stressed that patients diagnosed with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension would receive immediate support. This will include free medication and NHIS enrolment to facilitate follow-up treatment.

Unlike many short-term medical missions, GMR has adopted a sustainability model that enables patients to access continuous care after the outreach.

“We do not just hand out pills and leave. We register people for NHIS on the spot so they can seek follow-up care,” Dr Owusu stressed.

“Even in the United States, it’s rare to see a system where people walk in for free care and leave with a full year of insurance coverage. Yet, we do this every year through our volunteer-driven model ,” he added.

The GMR’s outreach has grown significantly since its first mission in 2018, when it served 2,000 people. Last year’s outreach in Bortianor catered to over 5,200 patients and registered 2,500 onto NHIS. The President attributed the growth to the commitment of volunteers and the organisation’s evolving approach over the years.

Ghanaian musician Black Sherif made his performance at the Share a Coke concert special by bringing a fan believed to be a sign language interpreter on stage in the middle of his performance.

To make everyone feel included, Black Sherif, also known as Blacko, invited the fan on stage to sign his song “Sacrifice” for people with hearing difficulties.

Many praised the act as a thoughtful effort by Black Sherif to make his music accessible to people in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Black Sherif performed nearly all the tracks on his newly released album, Iron Boy, treating fans to an energetic show.

The event also featured other artistes and performers. Jesus Christ 2 singer, Arathejay, AlorG X Bhadmayors, Jubed and Kawabanga took the stage, along with dancers from the DWP Academy, who delivered high-energy performances that kept the audience engaged.

The event was organised as part of Coca-Cola’s Share a Coke campaign and also tied into the company’s ongoing campaign to connect with consumers on a personal level.

As part of the initiative, Coca-Cola is customising bottles with individual names, allowing customers to purchase drinks with their own names on the bottle.

Three brothers charged in alleged scam impersonating Joshua Alabi

0

A 40-year-old businessman, Nurudeen Abdul Ganew, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly impersonating Professor Joshua Alabi, a leading figure in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to defraud a member of the Council of State.

Ganew has been charged with impersonation and defrauding by false pretences, while he and his brothers — Nurudeen Rashid and Nurudeen Gafaru — have also been jointly charged with conspiracy to commit crime.

All three have pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of GH¢150,000, with three sureties, one of which must be justified.

The case is being presided over by Mrs Sedinam Awo Kwadam, who ordered the accused to reappear in court on July 21, 2025.

According to the prosecution, Ganew allegedly posed as Prof. Alabi on March 3, 2025, and deceived Mr Hakeem Addae, a member of the Council of State representing the Central Region and NDC Constituency Chairman for Twifo-Atti Morkwa. Ganew, who also claimed to be an official of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), allegedly promised to assist Mr Addae in acquiring a Toyota Land Cruiser and ten auctioned trucks, leading the victim to transfer GH¢60,000 to him.

According to a GNA report, investigators later tracked Ganew to his residence in Wa, Upper West Region, where he was arrested. Items retrieved at the time included four identity cards, three pen drives, four mobile phones, and GH¢14,896 in cash.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Ganew’s brothers on July 2, 2025, at Subinso, a suburb of Wenchi. A search of their residence uncovered over 12 mobile phones, 12 MTN SIM cards, one Telecel SIM card, and a database of political party constituency executives across all 16 regions of Ghana — believed to be a potential target list for future fraud.

Some of the SIM cards found were confirmed to have been used by Ganew to communicate with Mr Addae and receive payments.

Prosecutors allege the three brothers operated a syndicate that impersonated high-profile individuals, particularly politicians, to scam unsuspecting victims. Their targets reportedly included chiefs, queen mothers, political leaders, and corporate entities.

Ganew is believed to be the ringleader, handling direct contact with victims, while his brothers allegedly managed mobile money withdrawals through vendors in Wa, Wenchi, Sunyani, Techiman, Koforidua, and Accra.

“I Know Where You Are” – IGP Reveals How He Caught MoMo Scammer from Nsawam Prison

0

Inspector General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has revealed a personal brush with mobile money fraud, exposing a scheme operated by inmates at Nsawam Prison as reported by Ghana Web.

According to the IGP, he was recently contacted by a scammer who attempted to deceive him into dialing a suspicious code, a move that could have compromised his mobile money account.

Sensing the trick, he probed the caller’s identity. “I asked him, my brother, where are you? What work do you do? Are you sure you are genuine? I know where you are,” Yohuno recounted.

The fraudster, realizing he was exposed, abruptly ended the call.

Further investigation by the police traced the origin of the call to Nsawam Prison, where inmates are believed to be operating sophisticated fraud rings.

These scams often involve background sound effects, including police sirens, to coerce victims into transferring money under false pretenses.

The IGP also recounted another case involving a prominent Ghanaian man who was threatened with death unless he paid GH₵100,000.

The man, in a state of panic, approached the IGP for help.

When the police traced the number used, it too was linked to Nsawam Prison.

Yohuno stated that despite serving lengthy sentences, some inmates continue to defraud the public using mobile phones.

“You can imagine somebody who is in prison and is being re-arrested. What punishment, again, can you give them?” he questioned.

He urged the public to remain alert and to involve the police immediately when confronted with suspicious calls, stressing the importance of verifying a caller’s identity before taking any action.

I can’t defend any NDC member, not even my twin brother – NPP’s Abanga Yakubu over brother’s probe in galamsey allegations

0

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Aowin Constituency, Fuseini Abanga Yakubu has reacted to allegations against his twin brother, Yakubu Abanga, who is also the Third Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding his alleged involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking to JoyNews at the NPP’s Delegates Conference on July 19, 2025, Mr Fuseini said that while he has not personally witnessed his brother participating in galamsey, he believes his brother is capable of such activities by virtue of his affiliation with the NDC.

“As an NPP member, I’m happy that EOCO is investigating my brother,” he said.

“I actually want more reports like this, so I can send a message to Ghanaians. Mahama promised to end galamsey, but look at what is happening.”

When asked if he believed his brother was indeed involved, Mr Fuseini replied, “To be honest, I can’t defend any NDC member, they are capable of anything. But I’ve never seen him do galamsey.”

He went further to say that he would not defend any member of the opposition party, adding that he welcomes negative reports about both the NDC and the ruling government if it helps expose wrongdoing.

His comments come in the wake of a directive from the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, instructing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to launch a full-scale investigation into alleged galamsey activities involving Joseph Yamin, the NDC’s National Organiser, and Yakubu Abanga.

In a letter dated July 15, 2025, Dr. Ayine urged EOCO to invite the two individuals for questioning following intelligence reports and growing public concern over the destructive impact of illegal mining across the country.

“These activities not only violate our mining laws but also pose a serious threat to our water bodies, forest reserves, and rural communities,” the letter stated.

The Attorney-General also directed EOCO to widen its investigations to include others possibly involved, particularly in connection with findings in the Prof. Frimpong-Boateng report on illegal mining.

He further called for cooperation with the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission to support the investigation, given the Commission’s regulatory oversight in the mining sector.

Watch as OB Amponsah jokes about Dr Bawumia’s 2024 election loss during comedy show

0

Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah made a light-hearted joke about former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, during a comedy performance at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The event, which drew a large crowd, was filled with laughter as OB used satire to reflect on the political events leading up to the 2024 elections.

OB Amponsah shared a humorous story about how someone from Dr Bawumia’s campaign team allegedly contacted him, asking if he would campaign for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate ahead of the election.

“Bawumia called me, well, maybe not Bawumia himself, but someone from his camp, and they asked how much I would charge to campaign for him. I said, ‘Let me call you back,’” OB said, prompting laughter from the audience.

He explained that instead of giving an immediate quote, he decided to consult his family.

According to him, his relatives helped him come up with a list of demands, which he later relayed to the campaign representative.

“I called my family to tell them about the offer, and they told me how much to charge. So I called the guy back and said I’d take two houses at Trassaco, two Benzes, and a Daewoo Matiz for Uber. The guy went quiet for like five seconds and then asked, ‘Are you mad? Do you even know how much our campaign budget is?’ That’s how I didn’t end up campaigning for Bawumia,” OB recounted, drawing loud laughter from the crowd.

He also joked about Dr Bawumia’s campaign strategy, saying the former Vice President behaved as though he was not part of the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

“I knew Bawumia was going to lose. He campaigned like he wasn’t even in government. The way he was talking during the campaign, it was only a thin line stopping him from saying, ‘Let’s vote this corrupt party out.’ Everything he said made it seem like he was opposing Akufo-Addo,” OB hilariously stated.

The comedian didn’t spare Bawumia’s running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo.

He joked that Napo was selected to inject some comic relief into the ticket because even the party knew a loss was likely.

“Why did they pair Bawumia with Napo? They knew they were going to lose, so they added some comedy. Bawumia could win ten votes, and Napo would say something that would cancel out seven. You all saw what Napo was doing. I didn’t know much about him until they made him the vice-presidential candidate. People were so concerned about Napo’s behaviour that they asked Otumfuo to speak to him. I’ve never seen a candidate who, after being appointed, had to be advised by a king,” he added.

President Mahama breaks ground for phase two of Blekusu Coastal Protection Project

President John Dramani Mahama has officially broken ground for the second phase of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project, aimed at safeguarding five communities in the Volta Region from the threat of tidal waves.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 19, 2025, at Agavedzi, where he addressed a durbar of chiefs and residents.

“This is not merely symbolic, but rather a clear demonstration of what responsible leadership can do, when it cares, when it listens, when it acts,” he stated.

The second phase of the project will provide protection for the coastal communities of Blekusu, Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutinu, and Adina. These towns have suffered severe damage from tidal waves in recent years, with homes, livelihoods, and farmlands lost to coastal erosion.

The project, to be executed by construction firm AMANDI, is expected to be completed within four years. It involves the construction of 37 groynes, large rock structures built perpendicular to the shore to trap sand and reduce erosion, as well as land reclamation works to secure eight kilometres of coastline.

The Ghana Hydrological Authority will supervise the project.

President Mahama emphasised that Ghana’s 550-kilometre coastline is vital for fishing, trade, and tourism, but remains highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and tidal waves.

“This initiative shows a national resolve to protect coastal communities, and to safeguard lives, homes, and key infrastructure,” he said.

He also announced that the project would include infrastructure to support local livelihoods. This will feature the construction of a modern fish market, cold storage and processing facilities, platforms for drying and smoking fish, a car park and lorry station, public sanitation amenities, and a waste collection system.

“So, this is more than just coastal protection; it is a comprehensive resilience initiative, blending environmental protection with socio-economic infrastructure,” President Mahama added.

He called on all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Works and Housing, the Ghana Hydrological Authority, the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, contractors, consultants, and local communities, to work together with unity and purpose to ensure the project’s success.

“Let us uphold the values of accountability, transparency, and community engagement throughout the implementation of this project. I urge everyone, especially the youth, to take ownership of this initiative by respecting construction zones and timelines, and by refraining from harmful activities such as illegal sand winning,” he said.

Background of the project

The Blekusu Coastal Protection Project began in 2015 during President Mahama’s first term in office.

Phase I of the project secured a 4.3-kilometre stretch of coastline, protecting the communities of Azizadzi, Horvi, and Blekusu. It involved the construction of groynes to reduce the impact of tidal waves and curb coastal erosion.

Although Phase I was successful, nearby communities remained exposed to similar threats.

Additionally, rising sea levels and worsening climate conditions heightened the urgency for continued action, prompting the commencement of Phase II.

Agyapong Hails NPP Reforms as “Answer to Call for Real Change”

0

Kennedy Agyapong

Flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has framed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constitutional amendments as a transformative step for the opposition party.

In a July 20, 2025, social media statement, the Assin Central MP asserted the reforms addressed grassroots demands for institutional renewal.

Agyapong characterized the July 19 National Delegates Conference as a restoration of core NPP values—”patriotism, honesty and discipline.” He emphasized the approved amendments transcended procedural adjustments, calling them a direct response to calls for substantive change within the party.

The statement thanked delegates and organizers for upholding institutional standards while urging unity ahead of the 2028 elections. “Rebuild not just for victory… but for a party that stands tall for the next generation,” Agyapong wrote, positioning the reforms as foundational for long-term relevance.

His commentary follows the NPP’s adoption of 54 constitutional changes, including expanded electoral colleges, restructured executive committees, and abolished super-delegates system.

FDA demands harsher sentences in Tramadol crackdown

0

The Upper West Regional office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is calling for stiffer punishment for offenders involved in the illegal sale and abuse of Tramadol and other unregistered drugs.

Speaking at a drug abuse sensitisation programme organised by Aware Minds Foundation for basic school pupils, on Friday, July 18, FDA Regional Director, Sankpal Dafaari Kelvin described current penalties as too lenient and ineffective in deterring offences.

He recounted a recent operation in Nabulo, a community in the Sissala East Municipality, where his team discovered a shop selling only unregistered drugs, including Tramadol 500mg locally referred to as “the red.” Ghanaian law permits only up to 100mg of Tramadol to be sold, making the 500mg variant illegal and dangerous.

“Something happened that made me vow never to fight Tramadol addicts again in the Upper West Region,” he told the students.

The raid, which took place on May, 30, nearly turned violent when residents attempted to attack the FDA officers the following day. The situation was eventually brought under control after intervention by the Upper West Regional Minister and the police, who assisted in arresting and transporting the suspect to Wa.

The suspect was initially charged under Section 118 of the Public Health Act, which prohibits the sale of unregistered drugs. The law allows for up to 15 years in prison or a fine of 1,500 penalty units. However, the court sentenced the suspect to only 160 penalty units, equivalent to GHC 1,920.

“I spent GHC 6,950 on fuel, accommodation, and logistics for that single operation. Is this judgment fair? If I decide not to fight Tramadol again, am I wrong?” he said.

Kelvin argued that such light penalties discourage enforcement efforts and waste critical public resources. “I wanted someone to go to prison to serve as an example,” he added.

He also cited a similar case in 2023 in which the offender was initially fined GHC 2,000. The fine was later increased to GHC 4,000 after his protest, although the suspect reportedly offered to pay GHC 30,000 to settle the matter informally, a proposal Kelvin refused.

The FDA regional director said custodial sentences are necessary to reflect the seriousness of illegal drug trafficking and serve as a deterrent to others engaged in the illicit trade.

Karpowership Ghana’s All-Female Internship Programme Ignites New Hope for Women in Energy

0

Accra, July 20, GNA-In a bold and strategic move to narrow the gender gap in Africa’s energy sector, Karpowership Ghana has launched an all-female internship programme in partnership with the World Bank’s Women in Energy Network (WEN) Africa.

This initiative is part of a broader commitment to empowering young women in the energy field and aligns with the World Bank’s 2024–2030 Gender Strategy.

Launched in January 2025, the programme is already transforming lives. It is designed to bridge the gap between academic training and real-world industry experience, offering young women practical exposure to the day-to-day operations in the energy sector.

It focuses on employability, professional development, empowerment, and promoting STEM education among girls.
Sandra Amarquaye, Communications Manager at Karpowership Ghana, emphasized the significance of the programme.

She said, “At Karpowership, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders. This all-female internship programme is a deliberate step toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5  Gender Equality. Our collaboration with the World Bank’s Women in Energy Network (WEN) Africa reflects our shared vision of increasing female participation and leadership in the energy sector.”

She further added, “We take keen interest in investing in the girl child — not as a one-off gesture but as a sustainable priority. That is why programmes like these, backed by scholarships and hands-on exposure, are designed to deliver real, lasting impact.”

In March this year, the company organized a career guidance session for female beneficiaries of its scholarship scheme, equipping them with essential skills for the job market, including CV writing, interview preparation, and personal branding.

This was part of the company’s effort to prepare young women not just for jobs, but for long-term careers in leadership and technical roles.

But the company’s efforts do not stop there. Beyond the internship, Karpowership Ghana runs a scholarship scheme in partnership with Takoradi Technical University (TTU), with a strong focus on supporting female engineering students.

Through this initiative, young women studying Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering receive the financial support they need to thrive academically.

In addition, field trips to the Powership are regularly organized to give students firsthand exposure to power generation operations, strengthening the link between classroom learning and real-world applications.

More than just observers, the interns are actively contributing to ongoing projects while acquiring valuable hands-on experience.

Amanda Amamu, a Communications Intern, shared: “My experience has been priceless; from media relations and event planning to CSR projects. Even learning how to communicate effectively through email has left a lasting impression. The level of investment in our growth  both personal and professional is inspiring.”

Gracia Ewura Esi Amoah, a recent graduate from the University of Ghana Business School interning in the Human Resources Department, noted: “I’ve gained practical experience in HR, including managing employee records and using corporate systems like the HR Navi software. It’s been a deep dive into the realities of the workplace and human capital management.”

Charlotte Foli, an intern in the Administrative Department, highlighted the organisation’s inclusive culture: “In just a few months I’ve seen how everyone, regardless of rank or gender, is given equal opportunity and respect. The collaborative atmosphere here has made the experience even more rewarding.”

In the Finance Department, Stella Akpatsu spoke of her hands-on learning journey: “Interning at Karpowership Ghana has been a dream come true. I’ve worked on budgeting, quarterly financial reports, and used systems like SAP and EBA. It has truly been a game changer for my career.”

For Karpowership Ghana, this is more than an internship or scholarship  it is a mission to create lasting change. By investing in young women today, the company is not only generating power but also sparking leadership, equity, and opportunity across Africa’s energy landscape, one female future leader at a time.

Why Nana B is trending after NPP’s 2025 National Delegates Conference

0

Nana B is the National Organiser of the NPP Nana B is the National Organiser of the NPP

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has been trending on social media following the circulation of a viral video.

In the video, which has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), the NPP member is seen approaching a group of well-built men, commonly referred to in the local parlance as “macho men.”

At the time, the group was holding a meeting, and Nana B attempted to engage them in conversation. One of the men responded in Twi, saying, “Wait, we’re coming.”

The comment appeared to infuriate Nana B, who reacted angrily, saying, “Look at the nonsense, look at how he’s talking to me.”

His outburst drew backlash on social media, with some netizens criticising him for disrespecting the men’s ongoing meeting.

Others accused him of arrogance, citing his dismissive tone and intrusion as inappropriate.

Some users also mocked him for being snubbed despite his senior position within the party.

The 2025 NPP National Delegates Conference took place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on July 19, 2025.

The event brought together delegates from across the country to deliberate on key party issues ahead of the flagbearer elections scheduled for January 31, 2026.

One of the major outcomes of the conference was the delegates’ rejection of a proposal to lower the youth age limit from 40.

National Cathedral risks exceeding $1bn with less than 10% completed – Bright Simons

0

Bright Simons is a policy analyst Bright Simons is a policy analyst

Policy analyst Bright Simons has warned that Ghana’s National Cathedral project could ultimately cost taxpayers over $1 billion, despite less than 10% of the construction being completed.

In a post shared on X on July 19, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Simons noted that although the Cathedral was originally projected to cost $100 million, recent figures from its auditors now estimate the total cost at $350 million.

He revealed that nearly $100 million has already been spent, with minimal progress to show, suggesting that the final bill could easily exceed $1 billion if the project is completed.

“The latest revised figure used by its auditors is $350 million. With less than 10% completed, $100 million has already been spent, suggesting that the total budget would likely top $1 billion. Some people argue that with nearly $100 million spent already (on an accrual basis), the country might as well complete it,” Simons wrote.

He cautioned against such reasoning, describing it as a classic case of the “sunk cost fallacy”, a flawed approach that could lead to significant long-term financial losses for the state.

In response to claims by the Cathedral’s board of trustees that the project could eventually become self-sustaining through tourism, Simons countered that Ghana receives far fewer annual visitors compared to countries like Germany.

He cited Cologne Cathedral, which attracts over six million tourists yearly but still relies heavily on private donations for its upkeep.

“In fact, without a dedicated worldwide voluntary association that donates regularly to fund Cologne Cathedral, it wouldn’t be possible to maintain it. All the evidence suggests, therefore, that the National Cathedral, if completed, would become another loss-making entity requiring permanent government subsidies,” he explained.

Simons stressed the need for a thorough cost-benefit analysis to be embedded in all government-funded projects to prevent wasteful spending and financial mismanagement.

Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees for the project have expressed disappointment over the President’s directive to the Attorney General to initiate steps to dissolve it, despite the absence of any formal findings of misconduct and the ongoing investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

“This is particularly troubling,” the Board noted, “given that, acting on the President’s directive, we were actively engaged in discussions with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on the future of the project,” they stated.

The National Cathedral project, initiated under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, has long been a subject of national interest, especially regarding issues of funding, accountability, and transparency.

Usyk destroys Dubois to reclaim undisputed crown

0

Oleksander Usyk (hand raised) has defeated Daniel Dubois for the second time Oleksander Usyk (hand raised) has defeated Daniel Dubois for the second time

Oleksandr Usyk further cemented his place as one of boxing’s greats by stopping Daniel Dubois in round five to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

The Ukrainian put on a masterclass in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium to dash Dubois’ dreams of being the first Briton to unify the division in the four-belt era.

Usyk, 38, put Dubois down twice in the fifth and the Londoner was unable to return to beat the count the second time round.

He also stopped Dubois in 2023 and extended his perfect record as a professional to 24 victories.

“I’m sorry [Dubois], it’s sport. My people wanted this win. Nothing is next. It’s enough. Next, I want to rest. My family, my wife, my children, I want to rest now. Two or three months, I want to just rest,” Usyk told DAZN.

Dubois – who beat Anthony Joshua to defend his IBF title in September – tasted defeat for the third time in 25 contests as a professional, with each of those losses coming inside the distance.

Usyk reclaimed the IBF title, which was stripped from him just weeks after unifying the division in 2023, and added it to his WBA (Super), WBO and WBC belts.

“I have to commend him on the performance, I gave everything I had. Take no credit away from that man, I’ll be back. I was just fighting, trying to pick up round by round. It is what it is,” Dubois told Dazn.

Usyk still top of the heavyweight pile

The great and good of the boxing world turned out to watch the momentous occasion, with Roy Jones Jr and Frank Bruno among those at ringside.

WBO interim heavyweight champion Joseph Parker was also keeping a close eye on proceedings as he seeks a date with the champion next.

Usyk, who has called the UK his second home, was welcomed warmly after Dubois had also been cheered to the ring.

It took no time for the fight to spark into life as the Briton doubled up on his jab but it was clear Usyk wasn’t going to be a sitting target. The former undisputed cruiserweight champion was far too slick, ducking under the jab and punishing his rival regularly.

Southpaw Usyk punctuated each of the opening two rounds with a counter left and had his younger opponent looking a little unsteady in the second.

Dubois looked out of the ring to his father Stan between rounds for some advice but he still found it difficult to pin down the 2012 Olympic gold medallist.

Usyk was in full flow by the fifth round and sent him tumbling to the canvas with a crisp right to the temple.

Dubois showed incredible spirit to beat the count but the writing was already on the wall.

A trusty left hook landed clean on his chin and his corner threw in the towel as the referee reached the count of nine.

Dubois left with another rebuilding job.

Usyk has now beaten Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois twice

A third career defeat leaves Dubois in a difficult position and requiring another rebuild.

The 27-year-old has not beaten a champion to claim a world title – he won the interim IBF belt and was subsequently elevated to full world champion before making one defence against Joshua.

Following his last defeat by Usyk, Dubois re-emerged with a newfound confidence but this loss will knock him back several steps.

He will have no shortage of options, though, with the likes of interim WBC champion Agit Kabayel, WBA ‘Regular’ champion Kubrat Pulev or even the likes of Deontay Wilder to go after.

Usyk, meanwhile, is the A side in boxing’s glamour division and can take his pick.

“Maybe it’s Tyson Fury. Maybe we have three choices, Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua, maybe Joseph Parker,” Usyk said.

Fury, 36, announced his retirement from boxing in January after losing twice against the Ukrainian.

But two-time heavyweight champion Fury says he is “the man” to beat Usyk.

“Massive shout out to Usyk – fantastic performance tonight against Dubois,” Fury said on his Instagram.

“It was a good tear up. Congratulations to both men.

“Usyk knows there’s only one man that can beat him. I’ve done it twice before and the world knows it. No matter what anyone wants to say, I won those fights,” he noted.

Dubois’ team raised concerns over Usyk’s age during fight week but he looked as good as ever.

As he has done in all previous rematches – against Fury and Joshua – Usyk used the data he had downloaded from the first encounter to his advantage.

“You See the Disrespect?” – Nana B Laments Humiliation at NPP Delegates Conference

0

Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, faced a deeply embarrassing moment at the New Patriotic Party’s recent National Delegates Conference, as a group of muscular party operatives publicly shouted him down in a dramatic scene that has since gone viral as per reports from MyNewsGH.

The incident unfolded as Nana B, currently the National Organizer of the NPP, attempted to impose authority over aspects of the event’s coordination.

However, he was swiftly interrupted and dismissed by the group, believed to be aligned with an opposing faction within the party.

In one of the circulating clips, a voice in Hausa can be heard saying, “Forget him… forget him”.

Clearly unsettled, Nana B was later seen pacing and venting his frustration to allies, lamenting what he described as a growing level of disrespect towards him.

“You see the disrespect he is showing me?” he reportedly fumed, according to an aide who was present.

The confrontation comes at a time when Nana B’s standing within the party appears to be on the decline.

His absence during the Ablekuma North by-election, a key event requiring grassroots mobilization, has been cited by critics as further evidence of his diminishing influence.

Nana B now finds his future in the party uncertain.

Some party insiders have begun to openly question his leadership and relevance, with whispers of a major reshuffle ahead of the 2026 internal elections gaining momentum.

Blekusu Sea Defence Project Phase 2: Mahama breaks grounds for construction

0

By Iddi Yire

Denu (V/R), July 20, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday cut the sod for the construction of Phase 2 of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project at Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

The Project, which is being executed by Messrs Amandi Holdings Limited over the period 2025 to 2029, will bring relief to communities of Blekusu, Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutsinu and Adina, which are threatened by coastal erosion.

President Mahama, in his address said: “The sea has taken a lot from this community. It has taken land, it has taken livelihoods, and it has taken our peace of mind, but today I stand here to say no more will the sea consume our land.”

“We’re here to reclaim what has been lost, to rebuild stronger, to offer our children a future where they are not forced to flee their homes because of rising tidal waves.”

He said the occasion was not merely symbolic, but it was a clear demonstration of what responsive leadership could do when it listens, when it cares, and when it acts.

He said in 2015, during his previous administration, the then government commenced Phase I of the project, Coastal Protection Project, to tackle the serious threat of tidal waves eroding the coastline of the area.

He said that phase comprised 4.3 kilometres of coastal defense works, offering some relief and protection to the communities affected, which unfortunately, for nearly a decade after that, the Second Phase of the project stalled.

However, the President noted that despite repeated appeals by residents, the Members of Parliament (MPs), the traditional authorities, and civil society, the project did not commence.

The President said in 2017 and again in 2021, destructive tidal waves swept through this area, uprooting families, destroying homes and eroding livelihoods.

President Mahama said, he could still picture the videos and the pictures showing the images from the effects of these tidal waves.

He said the pain, the anxiety, the fear that was etched on the faces of their fellow citizens.

He noted that earlier this year, during his visit to the Volta Region, he pledged that the government would no longer delay the action that was required to take away their pain and fear.

“And today, I’m proud to say that this commitment is being fulfilled. Your cries have not been in vain. Your voices will no longer be ignored. Today is your day, a day of renewal and a day of reassurance,” he said.

He said Ghana’s coastline stretches for over 550 kilometers, and that this was one of the country’s most critical assets, because it supports the livelihoods of their people through fishing, through trading, and tourism.

He said, however, it was also among the most vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change, particularly coastal erosion and tidal wave flooding.

The President said what was happening in Blekusu, Salakope, and Agavedzi was not isolated; stating that similar tragedies were unfolding along other parts of Ghana’s coastline, from Ada to Angola, from Cape Coast to Axim, and they could not continue to turn a blind eye.

The project, he said, represents the government’s national resolve to defend coastal communities and preserve lives, homes, and infrastructure.

The Project would deliver a total of eight kilometres of robust coastal protection, comprising 37 groins, dune restoration, reinforced embankments, and other shoreline defense infrastructure.

In addition to the coastal protection works, they were incorporating community infrastructure that would boost the local livelihood of their people, and this includes a modern fish market, cool storage and processing facilities for the fisher folk, fish drying and places for smoking fish, a car park and a lorry station.

Public sanitation facilities would also be provided, and a waste collection system will be put in place, he stated.

“So, this is more than just coastal protection work. It is a comprehensive resilience initiative, blending environmental protection with socio-economic infrastructure,” the President said.

He added: “This project and others like it reflect my government’s broader commitment to building a resilient and inclusive Ghana, where no citizen is left behind, and where communities, regardless of location, can live in safety and dignity.”

President Mahama said the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) programme, which aims to enhance coastal resilience in West Africa was currently awaiting approval at the Ministry of Environment.

He said the WACA project would take care of the rest of the coastline after the Blekusu Sea Defence Project ends, all the way to Aflao, and it would help to protect the coastline.

He announced that the Government had received a grant facility rrom the Chinese Government for the construction of the Aflao New Market.

The colourful event was witnessed by Mr Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho, the Chairman of the Council of State, Madam Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for Ketu South and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts; and Mr Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Minister for Works and Housing and Water Resources.

The rest are the visiting Serbian Foreign Minister Mr Marko Djuric; Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Foreign Minister; and Mr Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Some traditional rulers, who also graced the occasion were Torgbiga Adamah III, the Paramount Chief of the Some Traditional Area and Togbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V, the Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Area.

Arrest anyone obstructing anti-galamsey operations

0

In a bid to reinforce the government’s crackdown on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Mr Mubarak Muntaka Mohammed, has issued a stern directive to the security services: arrest anyone who attempts to obstruct anti-galamsey operations, regardless of their political connections or claimed authority.

Addressing senior officers at the 17th Regional Commanders’ Conference held in Accra on Friday, Mr Muntaka left no room for ambiguity.

He told the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) that anyone interfering in the operations should be treated as a suspect, even if they invoke his name.

“If anybody calls you to say I have asked that you should let go of this operation, please ensure that you arrest that person,” he declared.

He continued, “If someone calls and claims to be me, let the CID take action and arrest that person.”

Mr Muntaka’s comments come amid rising concerns about the influence of powerful individuals who often try to shield illegal mining activities under the cover of political patronage.

“I will not send you into the forest only to call back and ask you to exempt someone. That will never come from me,” he emphasised, distancing himself from any future attempts to interfere in enforcement operations.

Bawumia Urges NPP to Unite and Win Back Public Trust Ahead of 2028 Elections

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for unity in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at the NPP’s Extraordinary National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Dr. Bawumia said the party must stay focused and work together to win back the trust of Ghanaians.

Chief of Staff rolls out ‘Walk with Julius’ initiative to encourage healthy living, calls on corporate Ghana to join JoySports Invitational Tournament

0

The Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana, Julius Debrah, is leading by example in his efforts to promote a culture of regular exercise among Ghanaians.

In an exclusive interview with JoySports’ Muftawu Nabila Abdulai ahead of the JoySports Invitational Tournament, Mr Debrah, which he has confirmed participation, revealed that he has made weekend walking a consistent part of his routine as part of his personal commitment to health and wellness.

Walk with Julius at Trassaco

“I have been doing this [walking with friends] every weekend. It used to be daily, but now we do it every weekend and on holidays,” he disclosed.

He emphasised the importance of prioritising exercise as a proactive approach to health, warning against the tendency of only seeking medical attention after falling ill.

Walk with Julius inside Trassaco lead by Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah

“Generally speaking, it’s always better to try and exercise, burn out the calories and be strong. What we normally do is that because most people don’t exercise, we wait and then we get ill and then we go to hospital — that’s curative.

“But we are of the view that when you exercise, we prevent or avoid getting sick,” he explained after nearly two hours of walking with his friends at Trassaco.

He hinted at a broader ambition to encourage physical activity on a national scale, sharing how former President John Dramani Mahama once floated the idea of expanding these weekend walks to communities across the country.

“The truth is that President Mahama told me one day; how about we escalate this [walk] nationwide and then encourage people to exercise. In fact, I have been waiting for him to start because he brought up the idea,” he said with a laugh.

According to Mr Debrah, President Mahama himself is a strong advocate of physical exercise, and there are ongoing considerations to establish a national platform that will encourage Ghanaians to dedicate at least one hour each weekend to some form of vigorous physical activity, whether through aerobics, walking, or other forms of exercise.

“It’s all part of the reset agenda. We don’t want, as a country, to wait and then we start getting ill. In fact, research has shown that the more you exercise, the lesser you get ill,” he noted.

Let’s all pretend the movie industry is fine and cry in private

Gloria Sarfo is a Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo is a Ghanaian actress

Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has responded to people who criticised her for speaking about the state of Ghana’s movie industry.

In an Instagram post on July 15, 2025, Gloria Sarfo shared her thoughts about how the movie industry is not moving forward and wasting a lot of talent.

In her submission, she said that Ghana’s movie industry is wasting talent because there is no work going on.

Many people in the entertainment industry, especially those working in movies, did not take her comments well.

Some accused her of chasing clout, while others claimed she has not contributed much to the growth of the industry apart from accepting acting roles.

Critics on social media and traditional media platforms called her out for speaking negatively about the industry.

In response to the backlash, the actress posted again on Instagram on July 20, 2025, to defend herself.

She noted that her earlier comments were not intended to disrespect anyone or to paint the industry in a bad light.

“God knows I didn’t post that for clout chasing!! God knows I didn’t intend to demean anyone or my country!! God knows that I didn’t post that, because I was just excited to be filming in Nigeria (because this is not my first time)!! God knows that I had good intentions with that post!! He knows that I wasn’t trying to be selfish!!” Gloria wrote.

She went on to say that the people criticising her know she is not a boastful person and that she has always stood up for the movie industry in her own way.

“Meanwhile, they also know that I am not boastful!! They know, that I have always fought and championed this course, even without them!! Yet, a few of those who are directly affected, came under my post to type HMMMMMMMM. Even the young ones I was intentionally fighting for, also came to express their ignorance and disrespect me!!” she added.

Gloria also shared her disappointment in how some media personalities and pundits used their platforms to insult her instead of understanding the message she was trying to pass across.

“And pundits sit on national television/radio to insult and demean my personality and brand!! So, I’ll borrow their word, hmmmmmmmm & let’s all pretend that it is all rosy publicly, and cry privately!! Let’s continue to pretend like we don’t know the truth!! Yes, we have a perfect industry, one that is solid, no talent is being wasted, producers treat actors very well, and pay them good!! Ghanaian actors are the happiest actors in the world!! Ghanaian filmmakers produce 1000 movies every year!!” she wrote.

She ended her post by stating that she is done trying to fight for the industry and will now focus on building her personal brand, as many close to her have always advised.

“Until then, I wish everyone all the best. ‘Momma yEn nk) so aa, nnunu yEn ho, na yEn sere.’ Indeed, an industry not worth fighting for!! I rest my case!! Like my loved ones will say, Gloria focus on your brand. (I guess it’s about time!!) NB: this is not for pity,” she concluded.

Atlantic Lithium welcomes cabinet authorisation of revised fiscal terms for Ewoyaa project Atlantic Lithium welcomes cabinet authorisation of revised fiscal terms for Ewoyaa project

Atlantic Lithium Limited, the Australia-based, Africa-focused lithium developer, says it remains confident of securing final parliamentary ratification for its Ewoyaa Lithium Project in Ghana.

This follows confirmation from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources that the revised terms of the project’s Mining Lease are currently under review.

Speaking during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the MP for Ellembele, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, disclosed that Cabinet had authorised a renegotiation of the lease terms, which will subsequently be presented to both Cabinet and Parliament for approval.

The announcement marks a critical step toward the completion of the project’s permitting phase, which Atlantic Lithium says will unlock access to financing and the construction of Ghana’s first lithium mine.

Granted in October 2023 during a period of elevated global lithium prices, the original Mining Lease is now being reassessed following a sharp decline in lithium prices over the past year.

Atlantic Lithium has since been in discussions with Ghanaian authorities to revise the fiscal terms of the lease to reflect current market conditions.

The company maintains that a balanced agreement is necessary to ensure the project delivers long-term value to both shareholders and the Ghanaian economy.

The CEO of Atlantic Lithium stated, “We remain actively engaged in discussions with relevant stakeholders in Ghana to consider a revision of the fiscal terms of the Ewoyaa Mining Lease that were initially agreed in October 2023.”

“Having seen a significant shift in the lithium price environment since the Mining Lease was granted, we are seeking terms that reflect prevailing market conditions and that ensure the Project can deliver value for shareholders and the generational benefits that Ewoyaa promises for Ghana and Ghanaians.”

The amendments approved that affect party’s presidential primaries

0

The largest opposition political party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), held its 2025 Annual National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.

The conference, which brought together about 5,000 delegates from across the country, focused primarily on approving amendments to the NPP Constitution.

The proposed amendments were based on recommendations from a 9-member committee established following the Professor Mike Oquaye Report, which examined the factors behind the party’s poor performance in the 2024 elections.

In total, 56 amendments were presented to the delegates, out of which 54 were approved and 2 rejected.

Key among the approved amendments are new provisions that will significantly impact the party’s internal election processes.

Notably, the changes expand the number of delegates eligible to vote in the party’s primaries to elect presidential and parliamentary candidates.

Below are the amendments:

Motion 14:

Amendment of articles 8 & 13(11) of the Constitution to specifically provide that all former and current executives of the External Branches shall have voting rights at the Presidential Primaries.

The NPP said that the amendment expands the electoral college for the Presidential Primaries to promote inclusivity and broader participation, adding that the move was in line with the proposed “limited expansion.”

Motion 28:

Amendment of articles 10(2)(3)(e) & 13 of the Constitution to make all members of the National Council of Elders delegates at the National Delegates Conference and the Presidential Primaries.

This move also expands the number of people who take part in the election of the party’s presidential candidates.

Motion 32:

Amendment of article 10(3)(2)(d) of the Constitution to expressly provide that Chairpersons of Standing Committees and Directors at the Party Headquarters shall have voting rights at the National Council and consequently vote in the Presidential Primaries.

Motion 43:

Amendment of the Constitution by inserting a new provision to provide that National Officers, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, CEOs and other government appointees who file to contest to become a Parliamentary Candidate of the Party in a Constituency with a sitting Member of Parliament shall resign their positions at least twelve (12) months to the National General Elections.

Motion 44:

Amendment of articles 12 & 13 of the Constitution and insert a new provision to grant voting rights to former Members of Parliament, former Parliamentary Candidates, former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), former Ministers, former Deputy Ministers who are card-bearing members of the Party at the Parliamentary and Presidential Primaries.

Motion 45:

Amendment of articles 12 & 13 of the Constitution and insert a new provision to grant voting rights to former Constituency Executives, former Regional Executives at the Parliamentary and Presidential Primaries.

Motion 46:

Amendment of article 13(1)(6) of the Constitution to provide that National Officers, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, CEOs and other government appointees who file to become the Presidential Candidate of the Party shall resign their positions at least twenty-four (24) months to the National General Elections.

Motion 47:

Amendment of article 13(1)(9) of the Constitution to completely abolish the Special Electoral College/Super Delegates System.

Motion 48:

Amendment of article 13(4) of the Constitution to provide for the election of a Presidential Candidate when the Party is in government to a date not later than eighteen (18) months instead of eleven (11) months before the National General Elections.

Motion 49:

Amendment of article 13(11) to grant voting rights to five (5) members of the Constituency Council of Elders and ten (10) members of the Regional Council of Elders at the Presidential Primaries.

Motion 50:

Amendment of article 13(11) of the Constitution to include thirty (30) National Patrons and all Members of the National Council of Elders to be part of the Presidential Primaries.

Motion 51:

Amendment of article 13(11) to grant voting rights to five (5) Constituency Patrons and ten (10) Regional Patrons at the Presidential Primaries.

Motion 52:

Amendment of article 13(11) to grant voting rights to one (1) TESCON Patron from every recognised tertiary institution at the Presidential Primaries.

Motion 4:

Amendment of article 5(6) of the Constitution to adopt the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s demarcation/cluster of Electoral Areas.

The party explained that the EC’s “Electoral Area systems are pre-determined, bereft of controversies and involve more polling stations than the party’s demarcations of Electoral Area” and “cures any such misunderstanding or perceived mischief.”

Motion 5:

Amendment of article 6 of the Constitution to provide for an Electoral Area Executive Committee structure made up of five (5) members who shall all be elected, comprising the Electoral Area Chairperson, Secretary, Organiser, Communications Officer and Electoral Affairs Officer.

The party explained that “The current system requires limited expansion to allow for increased participation and support in the management of the electoral areas. A 5-member Committee enhances operational capacity and ensures a more inclusive and structured approach to supervising polling station activities.”

Motion 12:

Amendment of article 7(27) of the Constitution to give voting rights to National and Regional Officers at the Constituency Delegates Conference at the Constituency they hail from.

The party states that this amendment strengthens the connections between these Officers and the respective Constituencies they hail from and is also geared towards the proposed limited expansion of the electoral college pending the “OMOV system.”

It is instructive to note that it is not clear whether these approved constitutional amendments will affect the party’s upcoming presidential primaries, which are scheduled for January 2026.

Members of the party who spoke to GhanaWeb on the January 2026 presidential primaries were divided on it being affected by the new changes, which have expanded the number of people who are to take part in the internal election.

‘Arrest even if they claim it’s me’ – Muntaka orders Police to tackle galamsey interference

0

The Minister for the Interior, Mr Mubarak Muntaka Mohammed, has directed the Ghana Police Service to arrest anyone who attempts to interfere with anti-galamsey operations, including individuals claiming to act on his behalf.

Speaking at the 17th Regional Commanders’ Conference in Accra on Friday, Mr Muntaka delivered a firm message to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

“If anybody calls you to say I have asked that you should let go of this operation, please ensure that you arrest that person,” Mr Muntaka stated. “If someone calls and claims to be me, let the CID take action and arrest that person.”

He made it clear that no individual, including government officials or political figures, should be considered above the law in the fight against illegal mining.

“I will not send you into the forest only to call back and ask you to exempt someone. That will never come from me,” he emphasised.

Mr Muntaka also commended Mr Yohuno and his command team for what he described as their consistent efforts against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He said the practice continues to pose a serious threat to the environment and national stability.

The Minister added that both the government and the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) fully support the police in their crackdown on illegal mining.

“The President is behind you. Deal with anyone involved in galamsey strictly within the limits of the law,” Mr Muntaka assured.

As part of measures to clamp down on the activity, Mr Muntaka announced that all mining equipment must be registered by July 31, 2025.

He explained that this directive follows the seizure of over 130 excavators, many of which had no identifiable owners.

“We must remove this heavy machinery from our forests. If we succeed in that alone, even if people still enter mining sites, the scale of destruction will be reduced,” he noted.

Mr Muntaka urged the police not to tolerate interference from political actors, including members of the ruling party.

“The party leadership has made it clear that they support what you are doing. They will not allow a few individuals to damage the image of the party,” he said.

Illegal mining continues to affect several regions across the country, particularly in the Western, Ashanti, Eastern and Central regions, where rivers, farmlands and ecosystems have suffered long-term damage.

Nearly 200 Ghanaian students stranded as gov’t owes University of Memphis $3.6m

0

A large number of students who attend the University of Memphis might be forced to return to their home country, Ghana.

University of Memphis President Bill Hardgrave joined Action News 5’s Better Memphis show on Wednesday to speak on the status of his students.

He said the students are sponsored by the government, which has not paid the students’ tuition yet.

The students will have until August 9 to find a way to make the payment, or they will have to vacate the country, according to the Daily Memphian.

“I think there was a regime change in Ghana and that affected the budget, but we’re hopeful that gets corrected because we love to keep those students on campus”, Hardgrave said.

The Daily Memphian also reported that Ghana owes the University of Memphis $3.6 million.

Police recruits to be posted based on operational needs — Muntaka

0

The Minister for the Interior, Mr Mubarak Muntaka Mohammed, has directed that newly trained police recruits be deployed across the country based on operational requirements, rather than equal numerical distribution.

He made the announcement at the 17th Regional Commanders’ Conference of the Ghana Police Service held in Accra on Friday, July 18, 2025.

Mr Muntaka said the new approach had been agreed with the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and would guide postings in the coming weeks.

“Every region, district or operational zone will receive its fair share, but obviously having in mind equity,” he said.

“We’re not going to be sharing five, five, five, five, so everybody gets equally fine. We’ll share and make sure that they are posted in a very equitable distribution that will help whatever all of you are doing at your operational level.”

Mr Muntaka explained that the allocation would depend on the current personnel strength compared to the required numbers in each region.

“If you have 1,000 and someone has 200, and based on your own operational arrangement, all of you have shortfalls in numbers… maybe your required number is 2,000, and someone has 200, his requirement is 800,” he said.

He added that the aim was to address disparities in police presence across the country and support operational effectiveness at the regional level.

The directive is part of broader steps being taken by the government to improve policing.

It follows the recent graduation of new recruits from various training schools across the country.

Mr Muntaka also said government support for the Ghana Police Service would continue, particularly in the areas of logistics, housing, and general welfare. He disclosed that GH¢1 billion has been allocated to the security sector, with the police expected to receive a substantial share of that funding.

DKB questions telecommunication network over fast-draining data bundle

0

DKB is a Ghanaian comedian DKB is a Ghanaian comedian

Ghanaian comedian Derick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB, has questioned telecommunications giant MTN Ghana over what he describes as a fast-draining data bundle that does not align with his previous experience.

In a video posted on his X page on July 19, 2025, the comedian expressed concern over how quickly his internet data is being depleted.

According to him, MTN’s previous Turbonet data bundle of 92GB lasted him up to two months, even while streaming several movies and spending extended periods online. However, the new bundle offering 214GB reportedly lasted only 18 days, despite streaming just two movies.

DKB explained that with the older 92GB bundle, he was able to enjoy movies and still have enough data left for other online activities. But with the larger 214GB bundle, he claims he barely streamed two movies before the data was exhausted.

“MTN Ghana, what is the meaning of this? When the Turbonet data bundle was 92GB, I could use it for 6 weeks to 2 months. The new one you say is 214GB, I got some, and in less than three weeks, the data is finished. How can 214GB last only three weeks when 92GB lasted for two months? I bought the data on July 1 and by July 19, it was finished. MTN, please explain because I don’t understand this,” DKB said in the video.

In the caption accompanying the video, he tagged MTN Ghana and demanded an explanation.

“Hello @MTNGhana, can you please explain why the previous small data of 92GB lasted over 2 months but your new increased data of 214GB lasted only 18 days? I’m very pissed off,” he wrote.

The current generation of NPP executives has been unfair to us – Obiri Boahen laments

Nana Obiri Boahen spoke with GhanaWeb TV on July 19, 2025 play videoNana Obiri Boahen spoke with GhanaWeb TV on July 19, 2025

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has voiced concern over the conduct of the party’s current leadership, stating that they have been unfair to the pioneers who helped build the party.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb during the NPP’s 2025 Annual Delegates Conference, held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Obiri Boahen said the new generation of executives has shown a lack of regard for their predecessors.

Responding to former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s remarks about being sidelined by the party, Obiri Boahen clarified,

“I haven’t said we’ve been sidelined, but I believe the current generation of executives has not treated us fairly.”

He added, “How is it possible for the NPP to hold a programme in Kumasi and fail to inform some of the party’s pioneers? The same thing happened in Sunyani. The party cannot continue organising events without involving the older generation. The current leadership seems focused only on moving forward without looking back, and that’s not fair.”

Meanwhile, Obiri Boahen also urged former party leaders to reciprocate fairness and support the current executives, cautioning against backing only those with family ties.

He emphasised the importance of building broad-based support within the party.
