Collapsed Bridge Leaves Ho Municipality Residents Stranded, Facing Soaring Cost of Transportation

0

  • A key bridge linking Sokode Agbogame and Akrofu collapsed, disrupting transport in the area
  • Repair works on the bridge have stalled after the contractor abandoned the site, leaving one culvert incomplete
  • Residents now face higher transport costs and are threatening to demonstrate if authorities don’t act swiftly

Residents of Sokode Agbogame and Akrofu in the Ho Municipality are grappling with severe transportation challenges following the collapse of a crucial bridge about four months ago.

The vital bridge, which connects the two communities, remains unusable despite initial repair efforts by a contractor who has since abandoned the site.

According to Forgive Kwamla Segbedeku, the Assembly Member for the Akrofu Electoral Area, the bridge’s culverts gave way after heavy downpours in June and July.

“In June or July, there was heavy rainfall, which led to the collapse of the bridge’s culverts. I immediately informed our
Ho Municipal MCE about the development, and we both visited the Roads and Highways Authority to request urgent assistance because the incident completely cut us off from Sokode and Ho. Segbedeku told
YEN.com.gh.”

Authorities, however, responded by awarding a contract for the bridge’s repairs.

“The necessary authorities stepped in, and the contract was awarded.
The contractor completed one of the two culverts but couldn’t finish the second one before leaving the site about a month ago,” the Assembly Member added, expressing frustration over the stalled project, so, I informed
the MCE about the halt in the repair works. He, together with some officials from Urban Roads, visited the site and told me they would appeal to the contractor to return and continue the project.”

Residents face soaring commute costs

The prolonged closure of the bridge has forced residents to seek alternative, longer, and more expensive routes, significantly impacting their daily lives and economic activities.

The bridge served as the main route for many community members.

“It is the main route we use for our daily rounds. Students, drivers, workers, everyone uses this road,” explained Togbe Korsi Dzanku VI, Chief of the Akrofu Traditional Area. The situation has made commuting to neighbouring towns such as Agbogame and Ho a long journey, as one now has to use a very costly alternative route,” the traditional ruler stated from Agbogame to Akrofu used to cost GHS 6, but now commuters pay GHS 15 because they have to pass through Ho. Pillion riders also used to charge GHS 10, but now take GHS 20.”

Agitation and calls for immediate action

Mounting frustrations among residents are reaching a boiling point, with growing calls for immediate intervention from local authorities.

It has become a major problem for them, and residents are now losing their patience.

Some residents have said that if the bridge is not fixed soon, they will demonstrate to demand immediate action from the Assembly.

Two months of darkness frustrate Hawui residents

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the Hawui community in South Tongu was left in darkness for two months after a power outage that affected over 1,000 residents.

Multiple vehicles, including a wheel loader and a tipper truck, got stuck in the mud during efforts to restore power.

A repaired transformer later failed again, leaving the community uncertain about when electricity would be restored.

Youth in RPNGC demand reforms amid leadership crises

0

A coalition of youth, elders, and concerned members of the Resurrection Power New Generation Church (RPNGC) has called for sweeping reforms and transparent governance following the passing of the church’s founder, Rev Dr Anthony Kwadwo Boakye, in February 2023.

At a press conference addressed by Bright Asare Sampson, convener of the group, the members expressed deep concern over what they described as “leadership failures, financial irregularities and administrative abuse” that have disrupted peace and unity within the church.

The group accused four executives, John Kofi Boateng (Secretary), Linda Naa Odorley (Deputy Secretary), Benjamin Boakye, and Jennifer Boakye of alleged embezzlement, mismanagement and disregard for the church’s constitution.

They are therefore calling for their immediate suspension pending an independent investigation.

In a detailed press statement, the group explained that their actions were not rebellious but a necessary step to “protect the spiritual and moral legacy” of their late founder.

They cited several grievances, including:

Failure to present audited financial reports despite repeated requests.

Unauthorised withdrawals and unexplained transactions.

Intimidation and alleged arrests of members demanding transparency.

Disregard for established church structures and elder authority.

Decline in unity and spiritual discipline within the congregation.

“We seek nothing more and nothing less than truth, transparency, and responsible stewardship in the management of the church’s affairs.”

“The Resurrection Power New Generation Church is not the possession of any individual or group, but the sacred Body of Christ governed by Scripture and the Church’s Constitution.”

The group outlined several key demands aimed at restoring order and trust within the church, including:

An independent forensic audit of all church finances from 2023–2025.

Suspension of the accused executives pending the outcome of investigations.

Restoration of the Elders’ Offices and their full constitutional authority.

Formation of an Independent Investigative Committee, including youth, women, and fellowship leaders.

Democratic elections within six months to establish legitimate leadership.

An end to harassment and intimidation of members advocating for accountability.

They further called for the active inclusion of youth and women in church governance, arguing that genuine revival and growth depend on the participation of every member of the Body of Christ.

The group condemned alleged arrests of protesting members and appealed to the Ghana Police Service to ensure security at church premises while the internal disputes are resolved.

They emphasised their commitment to peace, unity, and lawful dialogue throughout the reform process.

Drawing inspiration from scripture, the group urged all members to remain steadfast in faith and prayerful, emphasising that their struggle was spiritual rather than political.

They proposed the creation of an Interim Reform Committee to oversee administrative duties during investigations, publication of audited accounts within 90 days, and open financial reporting at board and congregational meetings.

“Through unity, prayer, and accountability, we believe the Resurrection Power New Generation Church will rise stronger and truer to its divine foundation.”

‘Over N500bn’ – Davido’s brother, Adewale, brags about singer’s worth in tweet, ignites heated talks

Fans react to Davido’s brother, Adewale's tweet Fans react to Davido’s brother, Adewale’s tweet

Adewale Adeleke, Davido’s brother, has reacted to a question asked by a fan after he shared a picture online.

The businessman posted a photo of himself, Davido, and two of their cousins after Brenda’s wedding.

Fans quickly reacted after seeing the amount Adewale claimed his brother is worth in naira, sharing their thoughts on the figure.

Adewale Adeleke, Davido’s elder brother, has sparked reactions online after responding to a curious fan.

The music star and other members of his family hosted a lavish wedding for their cousin, Brenda Adeleke, the daughter of the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, who passed away in 2017.

Adewale shared a picture of himself, Davido, and two sons of Governor Ademola Adeleke on his X account after the wedding.

A fan commented on the people in the picture, claiming they were all worth N500 billion.

In response, Adewale pointed out that the “Awuke” crooner alone was worth more than N500 billion.

Fans of the businessman expressed disbelief over the amount he shared. Some asked how much Davido’s father is worth before he could claim that Davido is worth over N500 billion.

Others questioned whether the stated amount was his net worth of account balance.

One fan noted that even the big three Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy put together could never be worth over N500 billion.

They criticized Adewale, accusing him and his family of excessive boasting.

Some even suggested that the reason Eazi’s wedding was more talked about than Davido’s was because the Adeleke family couldn’t keep their mouths shut.

However, a few fans expressed excitement over the family picture, gushing over the four men in the post.

Watch El-Bernard’s prophecy on who becomes next vice president

Prophet El-Bernard Nelson-Eshun says Ghana's next Vice President will be a female from Parliament Prophet El-Bernard Nelson-Eshun says Ghana’s next Vice President will be a female from Parliament

A video of a prophecy made by Prophet Bernard El-Bernard Nelson-Eshun, Senior Pastor of Spiritlife Revival Ministries, has emerged, in which he spoke about the person who would take over from Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the Vice President of Ghana.

In the said prophecy, which was made in early October 2025, Prophet El-Bernard said that while President John Dramani Mahama would be handing over a mandate come January 7, 2029, Prof Opoku-Agyemang would be handing over to a female vice president.

“Then the Spirit of the Lord spoke to me clearly and said, ‘Look at the number nine.’ … The Holy Spirit said, ‘She shall be a voice for women in Ghana, and she shall open doors for women across the nations of the world. Through her, a new chapter will be birthed, not only in politics but in the destiny of women. She shall be a sign of possibility, a breaker of barriers, and a vessel of inspiration to many who have been waiting for a door to open,’” he said.

The prophet added, “The Lord repeated the word again and said, ‘She carries the number nine. She will be the ninth Vice President since 1979, and she will be sworn in on the seventh of January 2029.’”

He further stated that the woman he referred to as a ‘Number 9’ would be from two of the strong regions in Ghana.

‘If you want to lie, lie intelligently’ – ElBernard descends on NPP’s Ofosu Nkansah

“The woman is a power from several regions. There are two regions that combine to make her. That is why it is her turn, and that is why it is the turn for women. She is coming to open several doors for women. She, particularly, shall be the true voice of women,” he said.

He also said that the female who would become vice president would be from the Parliament of Ghana.

“I don’t know much about the first vice president in 1979, Joseph de Graft-Johnson, but you will see that from 1979 to now, the only vice president who has been in Parliament is John Dramani Mahama, and in 2029 the vice president, who is a woman, is somebody who has been in Parliament,” he stated.

BoG Second Deputy Governor urges banks to think beyond profit in extractive industry dealings

0

Matilda Asante-Asiedu, the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana Matilda Asante-Asiedu, the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana

Matilda Asante-Asiedu, the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has urged banks to think beyond profit-making and consider the environmental and social implications of their investments in the extractive sector.

She said while the sector comprising mining, oil, and gas, contributed a significant 20% to Ghana’s GDP in the first half of the year, its impact on the environment and sustainability was also a major concern.

“If we’re lending to the right people, making sure that our investments are sustainable, it can actually go together with profit-making,” she noted.

Asante-Asiedu was addressing industry stakeholders at the fourth in a series of training programmes on Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles with focus on the extractives sector.

The training was designed for Environment and sustainability staff and relationship managers of banks to better understand the Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles (GSBPs) and the requirements of the banks in implementing these environmental, social and governance (ESG) best practices.

The event brought attention to the critical role of the financial sector in promoting sustainable practices in the extractive industry, which is a backbone of Ghana’s economy.

The workshop discussed the IFC performance standards, which provide guidelines for businesses and financial institutions to identify, assess, and manage environmental and social risks.

Asante-Asiedu pointed out that lending to environmentally responsible projects could actually support long-term profitability and value creation for shareholders.

“By prioritizing sustainability, financial institutions can help mitigate the sector’s environmental risks while also ensuring long-term profitability and value creation for shareholders,” she said.

Yewande Giwa, IFC Senior Country Officer, noted that the session was part of a broader effort to deepen understanding of environmental and social risks across sectors.

She emphasized that effective management of these risks was crucial for sustainable and responsible business practices.

“The extractive industry is a fundamental pillar of the Ghanaian economy, accounting for a significant portion of Ghana’s revenue. The environmental and social risks need to be managed in order for this sector to contribute to long-term growth in the country,” she said.

“When banks and other financial institutions integrate these practices into their operations, they not only protect themselves from financial and reputational risk, but they also curtail harmful practices like illegal mining by cutting off finance from non-compliant operators.

“Together, we can ensure that Ghana’s extractive sector remains a key driver of sustainable and inclusive growth, and that our natural environment is preserved for generations to come. “

John Awuah, Chief Executive Officer Ghana Association of Banks, said despite the strong contribution of the extractive sector to national development, it also presented challenges for sustainability, climate resilience, and agricultural growth.

“Mining consumes vast amounts of water and energy. Oil extraction poses risks to coastal and marine biodiversity, and the cumulative environmental debt from unsustainable practices threatens the very ecosystems on which future generations will depend,” he said.

Awuah said the Ghana Association of Banks would continue to intensify collaboration with regulator and development partners to build a dual-capacity framework, one that strengthens ESG competencies within banks and enhances compliance readiness within the extractive sector and services.

Zimbabwe’s governing party moves to extend Mnangagwa presidency to 2030

Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa is constitutionally required to leave office in 2028 Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa is constitutionally required to leave office in 2028

Zimbabwe’s governing ZANU-PF has said it will begin a process to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term by two years, potentially keeping him in power until 2030.

The plan was endorsed on Saturday at the movement’s annual conference in the eastern city of Mutare, where delegates instructed the government to begin drafting legislation to amend the Constitution, Justice Minister and ZANU-PF legal secretary Ziyambi Ziyambi said.

Mnangagwa, 83, is constitutionally required to leave office in 2028 after serving two elected terms. Any change would require a constitutional amendment – and potentially referendums – legal experts say.

Delegates erupted in applause after the motion passed, reinforcing ZANU-PF’s pattern of securitised rule since independence in 1980. The party controls parliament, giving it significant leverage, though some insiders warn that a legal challenge would be likely.

Mnangagwa has previously insisted he is a “constitutionalist” with no interest in clinging to power. But loyalists have quietly pushed for a prolonged stay since last year’s disputed election, while rivals inside the party – aligned with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga – are openly resisting an extension.

Blessed Geza, a veteran fighter from the liberation war and a Chiwenga ally, has been using YouTube livestreams to condemn the push, drawing thousands of viewers. Calls for mass protests have gained little traction amid a heavy police deployment in Harare and other cities.

The president made no mention of the extension during his closing remarks at the conference. Chiwenga has not commented on Mnangagwa’s term extension bid or the protests.

Mnangagwa has presided over a dire economic collapse marked by hyperinflation, mass unemployment, and allegations of corruption. Critics accuse ZANU-PF of crushing dissent, weakening the judiciary, and turning elections into a managed ritual rather than a democratic contest.

Legal opposition figures have warned that any attempt to rewrite the Constitution will face resistance in court.

“We will defend the Constitution against its capture and manipulation to advance a dangerous, unconstitutional anti-people agenda,” opposition lawyer Tendai Biti said in a statement on X.

Ten elderly activists – most in their 60s and 70s – were arrested in Harare on Friday for allegedly planning a protest demanding Mnangagwa’s resignation.

They were charged with attempting to incite “public violence” and remain in custody pending a bail hearing on Monday. Earlier this year, authorities detained nearly 100 young people in similar circumstances.

The renewed manoeuvring has exposed an accelerating power struggle inside ZANU-PF. One faction wants Mnangagwa to remain until 2030; another is preparing the ground for Chiwenga, the former army general who helped topple Robert Mugabe in the 2017 coup.

Ghanaians React As Former MP Reveals What Odo Broni’s Family Should Have Asked Daddy Lumba

0

Rachel Appoh, the former Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has openly criticized the family of Priscilla Ofori Atta, popularly known as Odo Broni, regarding their involvement in the highly publicized relationship with the late Ghanaian music icon, Daddy Lumba.

Appoh’s remarks came amid ongoing controversies surrounding the late musician’s marital status and the rights of his surviving family members.

In her view, Odo Broni’s family should have exercised greater caution and taken necessary legal steps before allowing her to enter into such a significant and widely scrutinized relationship.

She insisted that the family ought to have requested official documentation specifically, a divorce certificate from Daddy Lumba to verify that he was legally separated from his first wife, Akosua Serwaa, before permitting the relationship to progress further.

During a recent interview, Rachel Appoh expressed concern about how the entire situation was managed. She stressed that it is crucial for a woman’s family to conduct thorough due diligence when accepting a suitor who is believed to have been previously married.

Ensuring that all legal matters are properly resolved beforehand is essential to avoid complications later on.

Drawing from her personal experience, Appoh revealed that her own father would never have approved her marriage unless her partner had provided all the necessary legal documents confirming that he was divorced.

She questioned why Odo Broni’s mother did not take similar precautions, especially considering the sensitive and complex nature of Daddy Lumba’s marital history.

Her comments come at a time when tensions remain high between Daddy Lumba’s widow and other family members, who are embroiled in disputes over who holds the rightful legal and traditional status as his legitimate wife.

While some family members insist that Daddy Lumba was still legally married to Akosua Serwaa at the time of his passing, supporters of Odo Broni argue that traditional customs had effectively dissolved that marriage.

This ongoing debate continues to fuel discussions across the country, capturing widespread public interest.

England-born Ghanaian forward Jesurun Rak-Sakyi was on the scoresheet, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Rizespor from suffering a 2–1 home defeat to Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday.

The 23-year-old forward, on loan from Premier League side Crystal Palace, started and played 81 minutes as Rizespor succumbed to defeat in the round-nine fixture at the Çaykur Didi Stadyumu.

Despite the loss, the talented English-Ghanaian attacker was one of the standout performers for the home side.

Trabzonspor took the lead through Felipe Augusto just two minutes into the game before Nigeria international Paul Onuachu doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 19th minute, assisted by Christ Inao Oulai.

In the 27th minute, Rak-Sakyi scored to pull one back for Rizespor. However, his goal was not enough to rescue his side from defeat.

Rak-Sakyi has been impressive for Rizespor in the Turkish top flight this season, scoring three goals in three appearances for the club.

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Board Chairman of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the completion of the Keta Port Project, describing it as a key national infrastructure initiative that will create jobs and stimulate the local economy.

Asiedu Nketiah made the pledge during his Thank You Tour of the Keta Constituency, where he met with party executives and supporters at Dzelukope as part of his wider engagements in the Volta Region.

Addressing party members, the NDC Chairman encouraged them to remain patient and steadfast, stressing that leadership requires courage and principle.

“If you want to do what is always done, you won’t make history.

“Do what is right,” he advised.

He lauded the party’s decision to distribute campaign materials directly to the grassroots during the 2024 elections, describing it as one of the effective strategies that contributed to the NDC’s victory.

Asiedu Nketiah also urged party supporters not to lose hope if their expectations have not yet been met.

“Don’t lose hope. Put in your best even if you didn’t get what you wanted.

The longer we stay in power, the greater your chances of receiving what you deserve,” he encouraged.

Touching on the issue of security service recruitment, he called for fairness and transparency in the process to promote national unity and stability.

As Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Asiedu Nketia assured constituents that he would personally champion the development of the Keta Port, adding that he would soon return to the area for comprehensive stakeholder consultations on the project.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta, Wisdom Bonbiru Seade, also addressed the gathering, urging the government to expedite employment processes for party supporters, noting that delays were putting pressure on local leadership.

He further appealed for the revival of stalled GETFund projects, which he said would help create jobs and improve livelihoods within the constituency.

Jackie Appiah Speaks Out As Women Insult Kennedy Agyapong Over Politics And Public Issues

0

Veteran Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah has broken her silence on the rising wave of attacks and insults directed at Member of Parliament and politician Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. The actress, known for her outspoken nature, addressed the issue during a recent interview, revealing her perspective on the public backlash Agyapong has been facing, particularly from women on social media and in public discourse.

According to Jackie Appiah, a significant number of women have taken to platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to criticize Kennedy Agyapong, often using harsh language and personal attacks. She described the situation as unfortunate, urging the public to focus on constructive criticism rather than resorting to insults.

“Politics is a space for dialogue and accountability, but it shouldn’t turn into a platform for disrespect and personal attacks,” Jackie Appiah said. “I’ve noticed many women criticizing him, but sometimes it goes beyond political debate and becomes pure insult, and that is not productive.”

Appiah also highlighted that while individuals are free to express their opinions, it is important to maintain respect and civility, regardless of political affiliation or disagreements. She emphasized that public figures, even those as controversial as Kennedy Agyapong, deserve to be addressed with fairness and decorum.

Kennedy Agyapong, known for his outspoken and often controversial political style, has in the past drawn criticism from various segments of the population, including women’s groups, for his statements on political and social issues. Some of the backlash has escalated into personal attacks online, prompting reactions from supporters and public commentators.

Jackie Appiah’s remarks come at a time when Ghanaian politics is highly charged, with tensions rising ahead of upcoming elections. Her intervention is seen as an attempt to call for civility in political debates, especially in how women engage with political figures they disagree with.

Social media users have reacted strongly to Jackie Appiah’s comments, with some praising her for advocating for respect and reasoned discourse, while others argue that public criticism is part of a democratic society and women should be free to voice their opinions without censorship.

Analysts note that the episode underscores the intense scrutiny politicians face in Ghana, particularly outspoken figures like Kennedy Agyapong, and highlights the role of media personalities and celebrities in shaping public discourse.

As the debate continues, the public is reminded of the importance of balancing freedom of expression with respect and decorum, ensuring that political engagement strengthens democracy rather than fueling division.

A shameful government that ignored the cries of the people—Ashiamah Slams Akufo-Addo’s Government

0

In a fierce critique that has reignited debate over Ghana’s recent political history, Daniel Kwesi Ashiamah, Acting Executive Director of the Complementary Education Agency and former Member of Parliament for Buem, has branded the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as “shameful.”

Speaking on a national television panel discussion, Ashiamah condemned the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for what he described as widespread economic mismanagement, unfulfilled promises, and a failure to deliver meaningful progress for ordinary Ghanaians.

“What did Ghanaians get in return for their trust? A shameful government that ignored the cries of the people, mismanaged the economy, and failed to deliver on its lofty promises,” Ashiamah declared passionately.

The former MP criticized the government’s handling of the economy, highlighting the persistent rise in inflation, high cost of living, and increasing youth unemployment. He argued that these challenges reflected a lack of effective leadership and a disconnect between policymakers and the people.

Ashiamah also questioned the timing and intent behind the February 2024 cabinet reshuffle, which the Akufo-Addo administration undertook near the end of its tenure. “When Ghanaians were crying for change, for accountability, for a new direction, the president insisted his ministers were competent. Now, at the last minute, he reshuffles them—what impact can that possibly have?” he asked.

His remarks come at a time when discussions about the former president’s legacy are gaining renewed attention. While supporters of the NPP argue that the Akufo-Addo government made significant progress in areas such as education and infrastructure, critics like Ashiamah insist that these achievements were undermined by corruption allegations, policy failures, and poor economic management.

Ashiamah further urged the current administration to take lessons from the past by promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. “We cannot afford another cycle of disappointment. The people deserve better,” he said.

As Ghana moves closer to another election cycle, Ashiamah’s sharp rebuke is expected to intensify political debate and prompt renewed scrutiny of leadership performance.

Two NPP Informants Exposed For Leaking Sensitive Information From Jubilee House – Names Revealed

News Hub Creator8h

Tension is mounting within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after shocking reports revealed that two insiders have been caught leaking secret information from Jubilee House, the heart of Ghana’s presidency.

According to reliable sources, the individuals said to be closely linked to some influential government figures were allegedly supplying confidential data to opposition operatives and certain journalists. The leaked materials are believed to include classified government deliberations, presidential briefings, and internal political strategies.

This revelation has ignited anxiety among senior party officials, many of whom are demanding accountability and questioning how deeply the breach penetrated the presidency’s security systems. The names of the suspects remain undisclosed, but party insiders say they are known faces within the ruling establishment.

Amid growing outrage, top NPP figures are calling for a full-scale probe to uncover the motives behind the betrayal and to identify others who might have participated in the information leaks. Political commentators have also weighed in, warning that such incidents not only endanger national security but also undermine citizens’ confidence in their leaders.

While the Presidency has yet to issue an official statement, reports suggest that disciplinary actions including dismissal and prosecution are being considered. As investigations continue, Ghanaians are closely watching how the NPP leadership handles this damaging scandal, which could have far-reaching political consequences as the nation edges closer to another election season.

Bono Regional Minister cautions chiefs and individuals aiding illegal miners

0

Bono Regional Minister Joseph Addae Akwaboa has cautioned chiefs and individuals allegedly supporting illegal mining in parts of the region to stop or face the law.

He said illegal mining had destroyed the environment in the affected areas and praised the security agencies for their role in fighting the menace.

He revealed that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) had carried out two operations against illegal mining at Branam in the Wenchi Municipality and in some Banda District communities, including Serigbo, Nipanikro, and Bandaboase.

The operations led to the seizure of 11 excavators and 31 motorbikes, with the arrest of fifteen Chinese nationals who were arraigned before the court and have since been repatriated to their home country.

He warned that “no one, irrespective of the background or status, will be spared if caught in the net”. He said the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operation Security (NAIMOS) Taskforce had begun its work and would extend its operations to other areas in the region and close down all illegal sites.

“If you won’t stop, we shall stop it for you,” he said, with the assurance that the REGSEC would continue to work to clear the region of illegal miners.

Mr Akwaboa gave the warning at the inauguration of the reconstituted Bono Regional Coordinating Council in Sunyani.

The Council includes Municipal and District Chief Executives, Presiding Members, representatives of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Heads of Departments and Agencies, and the Regional Coordinating Director, as required by the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

The Regional Minister urged the Chief Executives to focus on the development of the region in line with the government’s reset agenda.

The Banda District Chief Executive, Mr Peter Dongi, appealed to traditional leaders to support the fight against illegal mining, saying they are the custodians of the land and must help protect it.

The Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, observed that the security situation in the region has generally remained calm and peaceful, though there were sporadic “incidents of armed robbery cases, theft, rape, defilement, drug abuse and drug peddling, and other misdemeanor” which he said were ably handled by the Police and the other Security Agencies.

He said peace and security of the Region are paramount, hence the need to maintain it at all costs for the good of the citizenry.

He, however, expressed concern with the chieftaincy disputes in the region, especially in Sampa in the Jaman North District, which has been a bane to the socio-economic development of the region.

“Whilst REGSEC and the various MUSECs and DISECs are diligently working to maintain peace and security in Sampa and other areas, I wish to urge the Regional House of Chiefs to expedite action to resolve chieftaincy disputes pending before the Judicial Committee of the House”, he said.

The YEA Work Abroad Programme forms part of the agency’s broader agenda to reduce unemployment among Ghanaian youth by creating access to both local and international job markets through verified, ethical, and sustainable recruitment partnerships.

Ghana midfielder Bernard Mensah sent off in Al-Nasr’s defeat to Al-Wasl in UAE top-flight

Ghana international Bernard Mensah endured a difficult outing as he was sent off during Al-Nasr’s defeat to Al-Wasl in the United Arab Emirates Pro League on Saturday.

The former Black Stars midfielder started the crucial round-six clash at the Zabeel Stadium but was shown a straight red card before the halftime break, cutting short his involvement.

Al-Wasl took the lead in the 26th minute through Adryelson before Ali Saleh doubled the advantage for the home side.

Playing with ten men in the second half following Mensah’s dismissal, Al-Nasr managed to pull one back in the 53rd minute through Abdoulaye Toure, but it was not enough as the game ended 2–1 in favour of the hosts.

The 31-year-old, who previously played for Atlético Madrid, joined Al-Nasr during the summer transfer window on a two-year deal.

Since joining the club, Mensah has made four appearances in the UAE Pro League without registering a goal or an assist.

Ivory Coast’s Ouattara looks to ride economic boom to fourth term

Eighty-three-year-old President Alassane Ouattara is currently serving his third term Eighty-three-year-old President Alassane Ouattara is currently serving his third term

Alassane Ouattara’s long path to becoming Ivory Coast president included two elections in which he was disqualified from running, and a brief but brutal 2010-11 civil war spurred by his predecessor’s refusal to leave office.

Things have been easier since he took the top job in 2011, with landslide re-election wins in 2015 and 2020.

The 83-year-old former international banker hopes to replicate the feat for a third and potentially final time when West Africa’s biggest cocoa producer goes to the polls on October 25.

Ouattara’s supporters say his success at the ballot box reflects voter satisfaction with strong economic growth since he took office and a flurry of infrastructure projects, from new roads and interchanges to a more than 300-metre tower that dwarfs everything else in the city centre skyline.

His critics say it has just as much to do with restrictions on democratic activities, including what Amnesty International criticised on Thursday as a “disproportionate” ban on election-related protests.

The man who analysts say would be Ouattara’s biggest challenger, former Credit Suisse chief executive Tidjane Thiam, has been excluded after a court found he had French nationality when he registered, which is not permitted under Ivorian law.

Ouattara’s predecessor Laurent Gbagbo is barred because of a prior conviction.

Those who are allowed to contest do not have the backing of the country’s major political parties, hindering their ability to mobilise on a large scale, analysts said.

Instead, the four opposition candidates are heading up “makeshift coalitions” and are divided among themselves, said Cesar Flan Moquet, director of the Centre of Political Research of Abidjan, a think tank.

“All this means that these candidates do not really have a chance,” he said.

TURBULENT RISE TO THE TOP

Born in Dimbokro in central Ivory Coast on January 1, 1942, Ouattara received a doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, then rose to deputy director of the International Monetary Fund.

He later became prime minister under founding President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, whose death in 1993 ushered in a more toxic period in Ivorian politics.

New electoral rules, including one requiring candidates to have lived in Ivory Coast for the previous five years, prevented Ouattara from running in the 1995 election.

He was excluded again in 2020 on the grounds that one of his parents was from Burkina Faso. Gbagbo, who won that election, called Ouattara “a candidate for the foreigners”.

The war was largely a result of xenophobic policies by successive Ivorian governments against migrant farmers from Burkina Faso and Mali that also targeted northern Ivorians with cultural ties to them.

For the 2010 election, Ouattara formed a pact with former President Henri Konan Bedie which helped secure his victory in the runoff against Gbagbo.

Fighting that erupted after Gbagbo rejected his defeat killed around 3,000 people before Ouattara was sworn in in April 2011.

Ouattara coasted to re-election in 2015 and 2020, though the latter vote was marred by clashes between rival supporters that killed 85 people.

UNCERTAINTY OVER WHO COMES NEXT

Tensions do not appear to be running as high as in 2020, when critics were more agitated over Ouattara’s argument that a new constitution approved in 2016 had reset his two-term limit.

The protest ban and the deployment of 44,000 security forces to prevent unrest will help stave off large-scale unrest, said West Africa political risk consultant Jessica Moody.

Ouattara is likely to spend a fourth term focused on economic targets, including making Ivory Coast a middle-income country by 2030, bringing a new Abidjan metro online and improving roads and electricity access.

There is also the question of who comes after him, which he tried to answer before the 2020 election by naming then-Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly as his successor.

Coulibaly died several months later, and Ouattara went back on his promise to hand power to a new generation.

Choosing a new successor will be a thorny process given divisions within the ruling party, but it is not impossible, Moody said.

“I don’t think he lacks the motivation to stand down,” she said. “He will be 88 by the next election.”

NAPO Reportedly Dumps Bawumia, Joins Kennedy Agyapong’s Winning Team As Apostle Yeboah Reveals

0

A major political revelation has hit the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as reports suggest that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has allegedly distanced himself from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and joined Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s campaign camp. The claim was made by Apostle Yeboah, a well-known Ghanaian preacher and political commentator, during a live church program that has since gone viral on social media.

According to Apostle Yeboah, NAPO, who is the Minister for Energy and one of the most influential figures within the NPP, has secretly shifted his political allegiance to Kennedy Agyapong’s “Winning Team.” The preacher alleged that the decision came after NAPO became increasingly uncomfortable with certain developments within the Bawumia-led campaign structure.

In his revelation, Apostle Yeboah stated that NAPO had realized that the Vice President’s campaign lacked grassroots connection and genuine support from key party bases, particularly in the Ashanti Region, which remains the stronghold of the NPP. He claimed that Agyapong’s strong appeal among ordinary Ghanaians, coupled with his message of integrity and patriotism, had convinced several party stalwarts to switch sides quietly.

“God revealed to me that a powerful figure within the party, NAPO, has finally joined Kennedy Agyapong’s camp. He is no longer fully behind Bawumia because he has seen where the real vision lies,” Apostle Yeboah declared in the viral video.

Though there has been no official confirmation from NAPO or his close associates, the news has triggered massive discussion within NPP circles. Some party insiders have described the revelation as a reflection of the ongoing silent power struggle within the party, as factions rally behind their preferred candidates ahead of the upcoming elections.

Supporters of Kennedy Agyapong have welcomed Apostle Yeboah’s revelation with excitement, interpreting it as a divine confirmation that their candidate is destined to lead both the party and the nation. They believe NAPO’s influence and resources could significantly strengthen Agyapong’s campaign machinery.

Meanwhile, the Bawumia camp has dismissed the claims as baseless and a mere distraction aimed at creating confusion within the party. A few spokespersons loyal to the Vice President have insisted that NAPO remains firmly behind Bawumia and that Apostle Yeboah’s comments are speculative and unfounded.

Political analysts, however, believe the situation reflects deeper cracks within the NPP as the battle for dominance intensifies. With influential figures allegedly shifting allegiances, the internal competition between Bawumia and Agyapong continues to shape the political atmosphere, making the 2024 elections one of the most unpredictable in Ghana’s history.

As the story continues to unfold, Ghanaians are keenly watching how these internal realignments within the ruling party might influence its unity, strategy, and overall performance ahead of the crucial polls.

Pakistan and Afghanistan agree to immediate ceasefire after peace talks in Doha

Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire during talks in Doha after a week of fierce border clashes that were the worst violence between the two countries since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021.

The ceasefire between the South Asian neighbours “has been finalised”, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif posted on X on Sunday, saying both sides would meet again on October 25 in Istanbul to discuss “detailed matters”.

Qatar’s foreign ministry, which mediated Saturday’s talks along with Turkey, said the follow-up meetings were meant “to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire and verify its implementation in a reliable and sustainable manner”.

MILITANT ATTACKS, AIRSTRIKES

Pakistan and Afghanistan are seeking a way forward after the clashes killed dozens and wounded hundreds. The talks were led by Asif and his Afghan counterpart, Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob, both sides said.

The ground fighting between the one-time allies and Pakistani airstrikes across their contested 2,600-km (1,600-mile) frontier were triggered after Islamabad demanded that Kabul rein in militants who had stepped up attacks in Pakistan, saying they operated from havens in Afghanistan.

The Taliban denies giving haven to militants to attack Pakistan and accuses the Pakistani military of spreading misinformation about Afghanistan and sheltering Islamic State-linked militants to undermine its stability and sovereignty. Islamabad denies the accusations.

Militants have been waging a war for years against the Pakistani state in a bid to overthrow the government and replace it with their strict brand of Islamic governance.

On Friday, a suicide attack near the border killed seven Pakistani soldiers and wounded 13, security officials said.

“The Afghan regime must rein in the proxies who have sanctuaries in Afghanistan and are using Afghan soil to perpetrate heinous attacks inside Pakistan,” the Pakistan Army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, said on Saturday, addressing a graduation ceremony of cadets.

AFGHANISTAN WITHDRAWS FROM CRICKET SERIES OVER STRIKES

Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistan had conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan hours after the ceasefire, which began on Wednesday, was extended on Friday for as long as the Doha talks continued.

He said the attacks targeted civilians, adding that Kabul reserved the right to respond but that Afghan fighters had been directed to refrain from retaliating to respect the negotiating team.

Afghanistan withdrew from the cricket Twenty20 international tri-series in Pakistan next month after the death of three local cricketers that the Afghanistan Cricket Board said were due to military strikes in Paktika province.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said in a post on X on Saturday that Pakistan had struck “verified” camps of Islamist militants along the border areas and rejected that the strikes had targeted civilians.

He said militants had attempted to launch multiple attacks inside Pakistan during the ceasefire period.

He said more than 100 militants were killed by Pakistani security forces, the majority of them in strikes against a militant group that he said had carried out Friday’s suicide attack on the military camp.

Reuters could not independently verify the militant death toll given or any targets.

GES reports positive integration and minor hiccups as 590,000 SHS freshers report to school

0

Ghana’s nationwide rollout for first-year Senior High School (SHS) admissions is proceeding largely with minimal incidents, as the Ghana Education Service (GES) confirms a smooth transition for over half a million students entering the 2025/2026 academic year.

The three-day reporting window, which began on Saturday, October 18 and concludes Monday, October 20, marks one of the largest coordinated admissions exercises in the country’s education sector.

According to the GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, monitoring teams were dispatched across the country on day one to assess and support the integration of new students—referred to locally as “freshers”—into their various schools.

“We ourselves went round to do some monitoring and see how the freshers are being integrated into the new environment. Largely, the process was ongoing very smoothly in a lot of the places,” Fenyi told Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, October 18.

Managing the Influx: Congestion and Adaptation

While most schools managed the surge in arrivals efficiently, a handful of institutions faced temporary congestion due to large numbers of students and accompanying parents converging at the same time.

Mr Fenyi explained that in such cases, school administrators sensibly advised families to return on Monday, the final reporting day, to ease bottlenecks and better coordinate orientation logistics.

“You wouldn’t want your child to miss the first week. If you are able to report by Monday, which is our ideal deadline, we wish that you are still able to do so. That way, your child won’t miss this important orientation exercise,” he emphasised, encouraging parents to prioritize timely reporting.

Speaking to JoyNews, one parent said, “We got here around 8 am, and there were already so many people. Some parents said they had been here since yesterday. For us, it went smoothly—but still, more can be done. Everything was done online, yet when you arrive, you still have to queue and wait for hours. I believe the internet challenges may be part of it, but it can be improved.”

Another parent, visibly tired after several hours of waiting, shared, “We came here at 6:30 am and it’s now 11:32. It’s not been easy. I wish the schools would give us separate reporting dates to ease the pressure.”

Despite the lengthy process, many students were visibly thrilled to begin school. One student said, “I’m very excited to be here. I’ve been inspired by others who came here, and I want to make my parents proud.” Another added, “This school is my dream, and I’m ready to study hard to make my father proud.”

GES officials underscored the importance of orientation, noting that early days are critical for familiarizing students with school rules, academic expectations, and available support services. Data from the Education Management Information System (EMIS) shows that students who participate fully in orientation are 30% less likely to drop out in their first year compared to latecomers.

A Record Intake for 2025/2026

This year’s intake—an estimated 590,000 first-year SHS students—sets a new record, reflecting Ghana’s steadily rising transition rates from Junior High School.

According to the Ministry of Education, the number represents a 5% increase over the 2024/2025 cohort, driven by improved basic education completion rates and expanded capacity under the government’s Free SHS policy.

The Ministry, in a statement released Friday, described the mass placement and reporting period as a “key milestone for Ghanaian education.”

Officials praised parents for their patience during the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) process, which this year processed more than 850,000 applications.

Ensuring Quality and Support

As academic activities get underway, education authorities are focusing on both the logistical and psychosocial aspects of the new school year.

The GES has activated a national support hotline and deployed guidance and counseling officers to help students adjust, particularly those relocating far from home.

Schools have also been tasked with upholding the principles of inclusion and discipline, echoing the Ministry’s call for students to approach this new chapter “with discipline, focus, and enthusiasm.”

The Ministry assured parents of “continued support to ensure a smooth and inclusive educational experience for all.”

The successful integration of nearly 600,000 first-year SHS students is seen as a critical test of Ghana’s ongoing education reforms, which aim to achieve universal access to quality secondary education by 2030

. With the reporting process on track and orientation in full swing, school authorities and policymakers alike are optimistic that this year’s group of freshers will set new benchmarks for academic and personal growth.

Bawumia vows ‘world-class’ development – MyJoyOnline

0

Flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, concluded his comprehensive campaign tour of the Bono East Region with a bold commitment to leverage the gains of Ghana’s digital revolution to deliver “world-class development” if elected President.

The tour, which saw him visit all 11 constituencies in the region, served as a platform for the former Vice President to showcase his record of innovation as the fundamental proof of his presidential capability.

Dr. Bawumia framed his vision not around promises but around tangible achievements in technology and digital governance, arguing that his success in this area demonstrates his capacity to revolutionise public service delivery and economic growth.

Addressing supporters, Dr. Bawumia contended that Ghana was no longer a follower but a leader in several key digital metrics, positioning the nation favourably against developed economies.

“Ghana has shown that we can lead the world in digital innovation. What we have achieved so far is just the beginning,” he assured the crowd.

He highlighted three signature initiatives driven under his leadership, complete with updated data and comparative facts:

  1. Ghana Card (National ID): Dr. Bawumia asserted that the implementation and integration of the Ghana Card place the country ahead of others, stating, “The Ghana Card has placed us ahead of countries like the UK, which is now working to build a similar system.” The card’s functionality as a unified digital identity, e-passport, and soon-to-be-activated e-wallet feature is central to his digitalization agenda. The National Identification Authority (NIA) is aggressively expanding the system, which currently has over 17.6 million cards issued, far surpassing the European Union’s 2030 digital ID mandate.
  2. Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI): The MMI system, launched in 2018, eliminated barriers between competing mobile money networks, drastically improving financial inclusion. Dr. Bawumia presented compelling growth figures: “Mobile money accounts have grown from 8 million to 24 million, and agents have increased from about 107,000 to nearly 900,000 — all because of the interoperability system.” This growth is corroborated by Bank of Ghana data, which shows that active mobile money accounts stood at 11.11 million in 2017 (before MMI fully took effect) and rose to 24.5 million by mid-2025. The total value of mobile money transactions for 2024 stood at a record GH¢3.0192 trillion.
  3. Zipline Drone Delivery: Ghana, he stressed, hosts the world’s largest medical drone delivery network, operated by Zipline International. The system, which operates from four distribution centers, serves over 2,000 health facilities and covers approximately 12 million people across the country, ensuring the rapid, on-demand delivery of crucial medical supplies like blood, vaccines, and anti-venom to hard-to-reach areas. This innovation dramatically reduces delivery times from days to often under 45 minutes.

The NPP Flagbearer stressed that his work as Vice President was not an end in itself but a foundation for a modern, efficient state.

His presidency, he promised, would focus on building on these digital gains to drive innovation, enhance public services, and transform livelihoods.

“When you vote for me, I will bring world-class development,” he assured. “What I have done as Vice President shows that I can and will do even more as President.”

His final pitch to the electorate is a direct appeal to trust his demonstrated competence in delivering technological solutions as a proxy for his ability to solve broader national development challenges.

Parliament petitioned to remove President Mahama

CPP’s 2024 election running mate, Wayoe Ghanamannti, wants President John Dramani Mahama removed CPP’s 2024 election running mate, Wayoe Ghanamannti, wants President John Dramani Mahama removed

The running mate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for the 2024 presidential election, Wayoe Ghanamannti, has announced that he has filed a petition for Parliament to start an impeachment procedure against President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on a panel discussion on JoyPrime on October 18, 2025, Ghanamannti, who is a lawyer, said that he had filed a petition in Parliament for the president to be removed in accordance with Article 69.

He asserted that Mahama must be removed from office because he has failed in the fight against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He accused Mahama of deceiving the people of Ghana that he would fight galamsey when he became president, just to win power.

“In the 2024 election, I was clear that when we come, galamsey will be off because we are stopping all licences. And at the end of the day, the NDC used the system of being angry about galamsey, capitalised on it so that, ‘let’s put the fire on the NPP.’ They come into power, and it’s the same thing.

“Now we have a gold board that is going behind and buying them (galamsey gold). So both NDC and NPP cannot stop galamsey.

He added, “And that is why I’ve brought an action of the highest form of accountability — that we should look at Article 69 and impeach the president. When Parliament comes, the Speaker must look at it. I’ve already submitted this.”

Ghana’s Climate and Sustainability Minister advocates permanent seat on CVF-V20 board

0

Mr. Issifu Seidu, the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, has advocated that Ghana, as the host country of the Climate Vulnerable Forum Headquarters, be granted a permanent seat on the Climate Vulnerable Forum and V20 Finance Ministers Board.

He said this drew parallels with international precedents and the Country’s role in global climate action, where host nations of similar secretariats held permanent representation

.

The Miniser, who was also appointed as a member of the CVF-V20 board, made the call during the inaugural CVF-V20 Board Meeting held in Washington, D.C.

The Board welcomed the proposal in principle and agreed that it should be presented to the broader CVF-V20 community for endorsement to ensure transparency and equity.

The CVF-V20 serves as a crucial South-South cooperation platform uniting climate-vulnerable nations in pursuit of long-term climate prosperity.

It operates through five key structures: the CVF Leaders, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Environment, V20 Finance Ministers, the CVF Global Parliamentary Group, and the V20 Central Bank Governors Working Group, working collectively to integrate climate action into political, economic, and legislative frameworks.

Mr. Seidu expressed deep appreciation to President John Mahama for entrusting him with the role of Ghana’s first Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, a testament to the nation’s growing prominence in global climate governance.

He said the inaugural CVF-V20 Board Meeting marked a key milestone in strengthening collective efforts to scale up adaptation measures, expand financing for loss and damage, and advance health, water, energy, and food security across vulnerable nations.

“With Ghana’s continued leadership and commitment, the CVF-V20 is poised to drive a new era of climate resilience, technological innovation, and sustainable prosperity for nations most at risk from the climate crisis,” he added.

He emphasized Ghana’s proactive steps toward building climate and economic resilience, noting that the country proudly hosted the global headquarters of the CVF.

The Minister, in highlighting Ghana’s ongoing initiatives, indicated the government’s efforts to finance 500 megawatts of new solar capacity under its renewable energy expansion programme.

He also referenced productive engagements held in Beijing aimed at strengthening trade and economic cooperation to support climate-smart development.

The Minister said Ghana was currently updating its Climate Prosperity Plan (CPP) to align with prevailing fiscal realities and investment opportunities.

He called for enhanced collaboration among member countries and development partners to ensure climate finance delivers tangible results for vulnerable populations.

Week 6 match report – Medeama 1-1 Samartex

0

Medeama and Samartex shared the points in a thrilling Ghana Premier League encounter at the TNA Stadium in Tarkwa on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

The game had plenty of drama as Medeama came from behind to secure a 1–1 draw — a result that keeps them temporarily top of the league table, pending the outcome of other fixtures.

Samartex took a surprise lead in the first half when Dramani Awuah produced a moment of brilliance, scoring from the centre circle after Medeama carelessly lost possession. The audacious strike stunned the home fans and gave Samartex hope of recording their first away win of the season.

However, Medeama’s relentless pressure finally paid off in the dying moments of the match. In the 89th minute, Kingsley Braye pounced on a rebound, tapping home from close range to rescue a point for the defending champions.

Despite the equaliser, Medeama dominated proceedings throughout — registering 29 total shots to Samartex’s four, including 13 on target and 13 corner kicks.

The result extends Samartex’s unbeaten run to six games, with two wins and four draws. Medeama will next host Swedru All Blacks, while Samartex return home to face Hohoe United.

Police arrest officers caught in Imo Viral cult video

File photo of Nigerian police officers File photo of Nigerian police officers

The Imo State Police Command has arrested three officers allegedly linked to the Vikings confraternity following the circulation of a viral video showing them wearing cult insignia.

According to the police, the officers — Inspector Obinna Peter, Corporal Amaechi Augustine, and Corporal Ejikeme Victor — are currently in detention and are set to face an orderly room trial at the command headquarters on Monday (tomorrow).

Spokesperson for the command, Henry Okoye, in a statement on Saturday, said the arrest followed a thorough investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, into what he described as “an unacceptable display of unprofessionalism.”

He added, “The conduct displayed in the viral video is highly unprofessional and does not reflect the discipline, ethics, and values of the Nigeria Police Force. The outcome of the orderly room trial will be communicated to the public in due course.”

The video, shared by anti-cultism advocacy platform NaijaConfra, drew widespread criticism.

The platform stated, “These are police officers in Owerri, Imo State, openly disgracing the Nigeria Police Force by engaging in cult activities. They are boldly wearing Vikings (DNKI) berets and caps — an evil cult group responsible for countless deaths across Nigeria and beyond. These same officers are often used to kill rivals during cult clashes. How can such officers arrest a Vikings cultist when they are members themselves?”

The Imo State Government has said it is awaiting the conclusion of the police investigation before taking further action.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hope Uzodinma, Oguwike Nwachukwu, while speaking with Sunday PUNCH, said, “The police have said they are launching an investigation into the allegations. Why don’t we wait until the outcome? Launching an investigation is something that ought to be commended. Let’s wait for the outcome, and the government can take it from there.”

United Party stakes claim as Ghana’s credible third force

0

The dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghanaian politics is under existential threat, according to Yaw Buaben Asamoa, General Secretary of the burgeoning United Party (UP).

Buaben Asamoa asserted that massive voter apathy and dissatisfaction have created an undeniable opening for a “third force” to challenge the entrenched two-party system.

The former legislator’s commentary provides the strongest indication yet of the UP’s strategy to position itself as the sole, viable alternative capable of capitalising on the growing discontent among the Ghanaian electorate ahead of the crucial 2028 general elections.

The Data of Dissatisfaction: Two Million Voters Erode Duopoly’s Safety

Buaben Asamoa pointed to hard electoral figures from the 2024 General Election to substantiate his claim that the duopoly’s safety margin has collapsed.

He highlighted the significant drop in voter turnout as the clearest sign of public frustration.

“It is obvious that there is a space for a third force. The duopoly is not safe anymore. It is a fact. Two million people refused to step out and vote in the last election,” he said on Channel One on Saturday, October 18.

This figure refers to the estimated 2 million registered voters who abstained from casting a ballot in the last presidential election.

The official voter turnout for the 2024 election stood around 70%, a notable decline from the 79% recorded in the previous election cycle.

Buaben Asamoa interpreted this gap not as mere laziness, but as a deliberate political signal.

“These were people who risked going into opposition because they were unhappy with either the leadership of their party or the goings on for that election.”

He framed the abstainers as politically conscious citizens, disillusioned by internal party issues, leadership choices, or the overall policy directions of the two dominant parties, whose cumulative vote share has historically topped 95% since the start of the Fourth Republic in 1992.

The Search for Credibility: UP Aims to Fill the Breach

Buaben Asamoa argued that while the appetite for an alternative is high—a “fact,” as he put it—the success of a third force hinges entirely on its credibility.

“It is a fact that there is appetite for a third force. The real question is whether or not there is a credible alternative which can step into either the breach for one of the duopoly or for both.”

The United Party, which comprises a coalition of former high-ranking members from both the NDC and NPP, aims to be that credible alternative. By uniting experienced political figures with a clear focus on good governance and economic stability, the UP seeks to prove that it can offer a superior administrative capacity compared to the established parties.

He concluded his remarks by clearly articulating the United Party’s ambitious objective:

“That is what we aim to be — a credible alternative.”

The UP is betting that if they can capture even a fraction of the 2 million disillusioned voters, along with voters seeking a change in policy direction, they could fundamentally alter Ghana’s political landscape, forcing a presidential run-off for the first time in over two decades, or even achieving an outright victory.

GIABA to hold national sensitisation seminar for religious leaders on AML/CFT

0

The Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), is scheduled to hold a two-day national sensitisation seminar for religious leaders and institutions on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) measures in Accra.

The objective of the seminar to be organised between October 21st and 22nd 2025, is to raise the awareness level of religious leaders on the role of AML/CFT framework, especially GIABA’s mandate.

It will also agree on actionable points to promote peaceful co-existence in particular, and in general AML/CFT efforts.

In a press release signed by Mr Timothy Melaye, the Acting Principal Officer, (Communication and Advocacy) GIABA, he said the fight against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (ML/TF) was a collective responsibility of all stakeholders, towards protecting the economies and financial systems from the laundering of proceeds of crime.

He said GIABA recognised the valuable contribution of religious leaders as guardians of faith, and their institutions held tremendous sway amongst their followers.

He explained that fundamentally, one of GIABA’s core Strategic Goals in the 2011-2014 Strategic Plan was the promotion of strategic partnerships with the private sector, civil society and other key stakeholders, to increase awareness of ML/TF to empower citizens to act.

Mr Melaye said recognising the role of religious leaders in Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) and promoting the religious dimension of intercultural dialogues, the United Nations Secretary General enshrined in its Plan of Action on PVE, the importance for faith and community leaders to mentor “vulnerable followers to enable them to reject violent ideologies,” and promote “tolerance, understanding and reconciliation between communities.”

He said the involvement of religious leaders was vital in the fight against ML/TF and must be seen as legitimate as well as effective and sustainable, because religious faith appealed to people on emotional levels for attitudinal changes and it also gave voice to the wide range of community concerns.

In using persuasion as a strategy, religious leaders needed to understand what specific contributions they could and had to make to overcome the menace of ML and insurgent of TF towards transforming public understanding, attitudes and standard setting, Mr Melaye said.

The release said the broad themes of the seminar would include: The Role of Religious Leaders in Preventing Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing; Money laundering and terrorist financing risks and vulnerabilities associated with religious organisations, Religious Institutions as a tool for promotion of Peaceful co-existence, Risk of terrorist abuse in non-profit organisations, Promoting Tolerance and Preventing Violent Extremism.

The training will be delivered by technical experts and GIABA faculty, involving presentations, case studies, group work, and sharing sessions.

GIABA is a specialised institution of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as well as a Financial Action Task Force -Styled Regional Body, responsible for combating the scourge of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing in West Africa.

It was established by the Authority of Heads of States and Government of ECOWAS in the year 2000 with the mandate to protect the national economies and financial systems of member States from abuse and the laundering of proceeds of crime.

Rising Ugandan artiste Mike Mungu has teamed up with Ghanaian singer-songwriter Darkua to release Treasure, a heartfelt Afropop/R&B collaboration that explores love, regret, and second chances.

Blending soulful vocals with Afro-fusion rhythms, Treasure tells the story of two lovers reflecting on a relationship tested by mistakes but bound by deep emotion. Mike Mungu’s raw vulnerability meets Darkua’s soothing yet powerful response, creating a call-and-response dynamic that resonates with anyone who has loved, lost, and longed for reconciliation.

“This song is about growth,” said Mike Mungu. “It’s about realising the value of someone you may have hurt and finding the courage to ask for another chance. Darkua’s voice brings balance and healing to the story; we wanted it to feel like a conversation between two hearts.”

Sung in English with touches of Luganda, the track captures the richness of East and West African collaboration. With themes of love as a “treasure”, infectious melodies, and rhythmic production, Treasure is set to appeal to a wide audience across Africa and beyond.

This release marks a pivotal moment in Mike Mungu’s artistic journey as he continues to cement his place as one of East Africa’s most exciting emerging voices. For Darkua, the collaboration highlights her versatility and commitment to bridging borders through music.

Dreams FC will continue the search for their first win of the campaign when they welcome Nations FC to the Tuba AstroTurf on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

The Still Believe sit in the danger zone, but head coach Winfred Dormon is confident his young team can turn things around with a victory at home.

Their only objective will be to bank all three points to steer clear of danger.

Nations FC sit in 12th position after a relatively poor start to their season.

Kassim Mingle’s team have won just once this term — in their opening game. They have drawn two and lost two of their subsequent matches.

The visitors will also be desperate to return to winning ways to stay in the title race.

It’s a must-win game for both teams and promises to be a delightful one.

Stonegee making waves in Ghana with new music “Self Involved”

0

Flexible Eye Production has unveiled a fresh single from Stonegee titled “Self Involved”, produced by Medzion.

The song marks the latest entry in Stonegee’s catalogue, pairing his distinct vocal presence with Medzion’s polished production to create a sound that immediately draws listeners in.

From the opening bars, the track blends intimate storytelling with a contemporary sonic palette, setting the stage for a personal and reflective listen.

Lyrically, “Self Involved” finds Stonegee confessing a hard-earned decision not to fall in love, only to discover that a new woman has begun to occupy his thoughts and shift his resolve.

He navigates that tension with candid lines and vivid moments, alternating between guarded self-awareness and open admiration.

The result is a portrait of someone surprised by vulnerability, praising the new lady while weighing what it means to let someone in.

The collaboration with Medzion elevates the song’s emotional core, marrying crisp instrumentation with Stonegee’s emotive delivery.

“Self Involved” feels both immediate and introspective — a brief but resonant snapshot of growth and temptation. Fans and newcomers alike are invited to stream the single and experience this next chapter in Stonegee’s evolving sound.

TOR was handed over to private firm for $22 million — Energy Minister Jinapor

John Jinapor Minister of Energy and Green Transition John Jinapor Minister of Energy and Green Transition

Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition has disclosed that the previous administration quietly handed over the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to a private company for just US$22 million, raising serious concerns about transparency, value for money, and national interest.

John Jinapor, who made the revelation during a working visit to the refinery, described the transaction as “surreptitious”, questioning how such a strategic national asset could be transferred under unclear terms and without the approval of key oversight bodies.

He stated that the matter has been formally referred to the Attorney-General for legal review and appropriate action to determine the legality of the deal and ensure that Ghana’s strategic energy infrastructure is not compromised.

The disclosure comes at a time when TOR, Ghana’s only state-owned refinery, is undergoing a phased rehabilitation to restore its operational efficiency after years of low output and equipment challenges.

Over the past nine months, the refinery’s management, led by Mr Edmond Kombat, has overseen significant upgrades aimed at boosting daily refining capacity, reducing operational losses, and improving environmental standards.

The minister lauded the progress but stressed that leadership instability has historically undermined TOR’s performance. He urged management to adopt long-term, sustainable business models and build partnerships that are transparent and nationally beneficial.

He also announced that his ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to improve road access within the Tema industrial enclave — a move expected to enhance supply chain efficiency and refinery logistics.

Beyond the refinery, the Minister also paid a working visit to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), where he expressed concern over the firm’s declining financial position. Once a financially robust entity capable of self-financing major transmission projects, GRIDCo is now grappling with liquidity constraints that threaten its operational capacity.

He charged GRIDCo’s management to implement measures to restore its financial health, emphasising that the company’s stability is key to the success of President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour economy initiative, which relies on a reliable power supply to sustain productivity and job creation.

The visits, according to the Minister, form part of a broader government agenda to modernise Ghana’s energy sector, strengthen corporate governance, and ensure accountability across all state-owned enterprises.

Torkonoo’s picture is missing at Supreme Court – Amaliba claims

0

Private legal practitioner and former Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has ignited a fresh legal and political debate over the controversial removal of former Chief Justice (CJ) Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, arguing that the manner of her dismissal amounts to a historical and institutional erasure.

Mr Amaliba suggests that the removal, which stemmed from a contentious judicial inquiry and subsequent presidential action, is designed to diminish her tenure and impact on the judiciary systematically.

Picture Missing: The Symbolic Erasure of a CJ

Speaking publicly on the matter on Joy Prime’s Prime Insight on Saturday, October 18, Mr Amaliba cited a specific, highly symbolic observation to illustrate the deep institutional implications of Justice Torkornoo’s exit.

He recounted visiting the Supreme Court where the portraits of past CJs are traditionally displayed, only to find hers absent.

“I was at the Supreme Court in the conference room of the chief justice, and I saw all the justices’ pictures on the wall, and her picture was missing.”

Mr Amaliba stressed that this physical omission is the powerful, real-world consequence of her removal, suggesting a deliberate attempt to erase her record from the gallery of Ghana’s judicial leadership.

He stated unequivocally:

“What happened to her has an effect of saying that she never existed as a chief justice.”

Justice Torkornoo was appointed as Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, taking the oath of office in May 2023 after the retirement of her predecessor.

Her removal, which occurred roughly a year and a half into her constitutional four-year term, has been a major point of contention, with critics arguing the process was politically motivated and violated constitutional guarantees of judicial independence.

Impact on Legacy and Institutional Integrity

The legal practitioner emphasised that the impact of such a high-profile, non-standard removal procedure extends beyond the individual.

It sends a chilling message to the over 350 judges and magistrates across Ghana’s court system regarding the security of their tenure and the potential political vulnerability of the Judiciary’s highest office.

Mr Amaliba’s analysis underscores the severity of the action taken against the former Chief Justice, arguing that the effect of the removal process is intended to render her tenure non-existent in the country’s judicial history.

“That is the effect of what has happened to her.”

Constitutional law experts note that a Chief Justice can only be removed under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which requires a petition, a committee of inquiry, and specific findings of misbehaviour or incompetence.

The controversy surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal centered on whether these procedures were fully and fairly adhered to, or whether the process was fast-tracked under political duress.

Mr Amaliba’s comments come amidst mounting public scrutiny of the separation of powers and judicial security in Ghana, raising fundamental questions about the ultimate authority over judicial leaders and the sanctity of their historical contributions.

The symbolic removal of a former Chief Justice’s portrait in a primary official setting is viewed by many in the legal fraternity as a profound institutional affront.

Ghana to host maiden Africa AI Conference in November

0

Ghana is set to host the maiden edition of the Africa Artificial Intelligence (AI) conference, being organised by the Africa Education Trust Fund (AETF).

The conference, which will focus on how AI can be responsibly leveraged to accelerate Africa’s digital and socio-economic transformation is scheduled to take place at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) in Accra, from November 5 to 6, 2025.

The theme for the occasion is, “AI for Africa: Unlocking Opportunities for Education, Innovation, and Sustainable Development.”

Speaking at the media launch, Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, the Chairman, AETF, said the conference would serve as a dynamic platform for dialogue among policymakers, technologists, educators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and development partners from across the continent and beyond.

He said it would also include sessions on AI in national digital strategies and infrastructure development, cybersecurity, data governance, and ethical AI policy frameworks, fostering AI startups and tech ecosystems, and digital skills and youth empowerment in AI innovation.

The Chairman of AETF said the AETF had been established by Africans to mobilise resources and support of various kinds for educational advancement of the African continent and the African people wherever they may reside.

“And in our various deliberations, we thought it would be wise to identify a topic or a subject that is of such seismic, and even cataclysmic implications for our continent that if we don’t master AI, we may go astray and our content will not be able to move as fast as it should,” he added.

He said the youth represented the future of the country and the continent, and that it was crucial for them being the primary beneficiaries of AI to understand its potential and explore ways to harness it effectively to maximize its benefits.

Mr Judson Wendle Addy, Senior Advisor, AETF, said Ghana was no longer a bystander in the digital revolution but a builder of the future, with over USD 21.1 billion already committed toward AI and ICT-related investments.

He said the AETF represented the human-capital bridge of the African Continental Free Trade Area, addressing Africa’s urgent need to transform its vast resources into semi-finished and finished goods, supported by innovation and skilled labor.

The Senior Advisor called on Universities, TVET institutions, teachers, and students to embrace AI-based learning, research and innovation.

“Chambers of Commerce, employers, entrepreneurs and all other sectors must also adopt AI solutions that improve efficiency, reliability, and competitiveness,” he added.

He said Africa stood at a decisive turning point, emphasizing that the continent must define its own place in the age of AI through education, collaboration, and innovation, rather than allowing the world to define it for them.

“It is time to produce food and durable goods in Africa, it is time to build education systems that work for Africa, it is time to create Africa’s AI platform for Africa’s solutions that speak Africa’s languages, solve Africa’s problems and drive Africa’s prosperity,” he stressed.

Naa Torshie’s ‘working team members’ disown her for switching to Kennedy Agyapong’s camp

A group of loyal NPP members in Tema, who also double as working team members loyal to Irene Naa Torshie, former Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, have disowned their former mentor following reports of her switch to the camp of Kennedy Agyapong in the NPP flagbearer race.

Last week, media reports indicated that Naa Torshie was set to join Kennedy’s camp to fulfil a prophecy by Prophet El-Bernard.

Her switch to the Kennedy camp, according to sources, is so she will become his running mate in alignment with the prophecy that a female Vice President will be sworn in on January 7, 2029.

Also, a picture of Naa Torshie together with members of the Kennedy campaign team yesterday emerged on social media, seemingly confirming the reports.

Following the emergence of the picture, a group of loyalists who were together with Naa Torshie in the camp of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia have issued a disclaimer.

They have emphatically disowned Naa Torshie, their former boss, and accused her of pursuing a personal ambition over the collective “party interest” they were working together for.

“The decision by the former MP, Irene Naa Torshie, to join another camp is a deeply personal one, driven by individual ambition. As you can all see, not a single one of her longstanding allies from our party has joined her. This speaks volumes,” the disclaimer issued on behalf of the group by their spokesperson, Nana Yaw Ntim, read.

The group further said: “It is now clear that her move is a reaction to not being selected as Dr Bawumia’s running mate. She has chosen to disregard party loyalty and the collective goal for a personal vice-presidential pursuit that we all know is not a viable mission.”

The group also reprimanded Naa Torshie, disclosing how she failed to have a significant impact on her constituency, saying, “She was with us in Tema West, invested heavily, and we still lost. This demonstrates that our strength was never about one person.”

“We want to assure that our base remains solidly behind our visionary leader, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. We are more united and focused than ever, and we will do everything necessary to ensure his victory is sealed,” the group asserted.

Four ‘Pragya’ operators fined GH¢2,400 for obstructing public road at Agbogbloshie

0

Four tricycle operators, popularly known as ‘Pragya’, have been prosecuted and fined GH¢600 each, equivalent to 50 penalty units, by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court for obstructing public roads at the Agbogbloshie Market.

The offenders, who were arrested by Public Health Officers of the AMA during a routine enforcement exercise, pleaded guilty to the offence and were subsequently convicted by the court.

The four operators were among the 21 offenders recently arrested at the Agbogbloshie Market for various sanitation and public order violations, including selling on open drains, obstructing walkways, and trading at unauthorised locations.

Speaking after the court proceedings, the Head of Public Health at the AMA, Madam Florence Kuukyi, said the court was lenient with the offenders since it was their first appearance, hence the fine, and warned that subsequent offenders would face stiffer penalties, including imprisonment.

NAIMOS and Blue Water Guards launch major operations across two regions

Ghana’s intensified fight against illegal mining — popularly known as galamsey — entered a new phase this week as two national task forces, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Blue Water Guards, launched simultaneous operations in the Eastern and Western Regions.

The task forces dismantled dozens of illegal mining sites, seized heavy machinery, and reclaimed degraded lands and waterways.

The coordinated enforcement campaign, which began on Monday, October 13, marks one of the most extensive anti-galamsey crackdowns this year.

NAIMOS Task Force storms Eastern Region:

Acting on credible intelligence, NAIMOS operatives descended on Oda Nkwanta, Birim Central Municipality, and the Akanteng–Asamankese corridor, uncovering active illegal mining sites destroying cocoa farms and polluting tributaries of the River Birim.

As the task force approached, many miners fled, abandoning three excavators, five motorbikes, and several other items, including excavator batteries and computer monitors. One excavator was found concealed deep within the bush — an indication of the growing sophistication of these illegal operations.

The offensive continued on Tuesday, October 14, with new raids at Old Abirem, Kyenkyenku, and the Oboho Forest Reserve. Officers disabled and destroyed several excavators, heavy-duty water pumps, and fuel drums. At Old Abirem, three individuals were arrested for questioning, leading authorities to another illegal mining site nearby.

In Kyenkyenku, miners were found working dangerously close to a public road, while in the Oboho Forest Reserve in the Ayensuano District, four excavators were discovered parked in nearby villages — raising suspicions of external financing and protection for the illicit trade.

Blue Water Guards Strike in Wassa Agona and Mpohor

While NAIMOS was active in the east, the Blue Water Guards extended the campaign to the Western Region, conducting operations in Wassa Agona, Bogoso, Bayerigya, and Mpohor to halt the destruction of farmlands and water bodies.

On Tuesday, October 14, officers under the Mpohor Blue Water Guards carried out a high-intensity operation at Mile 9 in the Mpohor Fiase District, where a mining machine was destroyed and burnt.

The following day, Wednesday, October 15, the Tarkwa Nsuaem team launched a decisive raid at Wassa Agona, a community near the River Bonsa. The operation, part of a community-led campaign to protect one of the region’s vital water sources, led to the seizure and destruction of 22 pumping machines and 18 Changfang gold extraction units, which were set ablaze on site.

The momentum continued on Thursday, October 16, as the Bogoso River Guards mounted a dawn operation at Ehyireso in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality. One Changfang machine was destroyed and several other tools seized along the Mansi River.

Later that morning, around 9:00 a.m., another team raided Bayerigya, also in the Prestea Huni Valley area, where two additional pumping machines were confiscated, and various mining components dismantled and destroyed.

Government’s Renewed Commitment

Officials from NAIMOS and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources say these coordinated operations form part of a sustained national effort to reclaim Ghana’s degraded lands and polluted rivers from illegal mining syndicates.

They stressed that the enforcement drive will continue across multiple regions, with enhanced intelligence gathering, technology deployment, and stronger community collaboration to protect reclaimed sites.

As Ghana intensifies its war on illegal mining, the message from government and environmental advocates remains clear — the era of unchecked galamsey must come to an end.

Osei Assibey Antwi is a former Executive Director of the National Service Authority Osei Assibey Antwi is a former Executive Director of the National Service Authority

Lawyers for Osei Assibey Antwi, former Executive Director of the National Service Authority, have told an Accra High Court that the accused person has not been served with any document to report to court.

Paa Kwesi Kuboadzi, counsel for the accused, said, unfortunately, for today’s case, they were not given any notice.

He said, “I was called about an hour ago to appear in court. That is why I am naked.”

The counsel, who was not properly dressed in the profession’s dress code of black and white with the wing, prayed that the prosecution give the defence ample notice so that they may properly appear in court.

“Again, my client’s reporting schedule requires him to report in Kumasi every Monday apart from the first Monday of the month, on which he reports in Accra,” he added.

Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who led the prosecution, told the court that the charge sheet was filed but “we did not have a hearing date, and we also did not know the case had been scheduled for today.”

She said her instructions were that they would file a hearing notice as soon as possible.

She said the prosecution wished to ask that the accused person report to Accra on Monday rather than in Kumasi.

The DPP assured the court that the prosecution would serve him with the charges and facts and inform him when he should be in court for the first hearing.

The court, presided over by Justice Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie, ordered the accused person to report at the NIB in Accra on October 20, 2025.

The former Executive Director has been charged with 14 counts, including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, and money laundering, in a case involving more than GH¢600 million.

He is accused of authorising the payment of allowances to more than 60,000 non-existent national service personnel, resulting in a loss of GH¢500,861,744.02, and misappropriating public funds during his tenure between August 2021 and February 2025.

Assibey Antwi is facing multiple counts under sections 179A(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and section 1(2)(c) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044).

He also faces six counts of stealing, with the prosecution claiming that between August 2023 and May 2024, he dishonestly appropriated various sums of money totalling several million cedis belonging to the National Service Authority.

The alleged thefts include GH¢3.6 million on August 22, 2023; GH¢516,000 each on September 11, October 26, and November 23, 2023; GH¢1.03 million on December 18, 2023; and GH¢2.06 million on May 14, 2024.

The Attorney-General further alleged that between January 2022 and December 2024, Assibey Antwi caused an additional GH¢8.26 million loss to the state by authorising transfers from the NSA’s Control Account to his personal e-zwich card account.

The charge sheet also includes unauthorised withdrawals from the Kumawu Farm Project account, amounting to GH¢74 million, which prosecutors say were not used for their intended purpose.

Specifically, Assibey Antwi is accused of withdrawing GH¢55 million on September 30, 2022; GH¢15 million on October 20, 2023; and GH¢4 million on January 24, 2024, all allegedly without expending the funds on the project.

His plea is yet to be taken.

Ghana’s rare blood crisis in focus as Coconut Grove hosts life-saving drive

0

Ghana is intensifying efforts to address the country’s persistent blood shortage, with a renewed push for voluntary donation led by the Coconut Grove Hotel and the National Blood Service.

The 2025 blood donation drive, held in Accra, brought together health professionals and donors to highlight the life-saving power of a consistent blood supply.

Globally, blood donation remains uneven—high-income countries account for nearly half of all donations, despite representing a fraction of the world’s population.

Yet many patients, especially in low-income regions, still lack timely access to safe blood.

With blood unable to be stored indefinitely, regular donations are essential to meet demand and save lives.

The event brought to light the urgent need for rare blood types, particularly B-negative and O-negative, which remain critically scarce across health facilities.

Blood recruiter at the National Blood Service, Kwaku Ajololo, called on the public to take donation seriously and urged individuals to know their blood groups and build networks with others who share similar types.

“For our demographics, the negative blood types are difficult to get—the B negative and the O negative are very rare,” he said. “Sometimes someone may need four or five units of blood, but you can’t give all of it. That’s why I always tell people to have friends who match your blood group in case we don’t have enough.”

His remarks sparked conversations around the need for a more resilient and community-driven blood system, especially in emergencies.

President of Group Nduom Ghana, Dr. Nana Kweku Nduom, echoed the call for regular donation, stressing that no patient should lose their life due to a lack of blood.

“Every time you get this message saying someone is in the hospital and needs blood type O or A, it shouldn’t be necessary,” he said. “We should have enough blood everywhere so people can get it when they need it.”

Donors who participated in the exercise described the experience as fulfilling and encouraged others to join future drives.

One donor shared, “The feeling is very exciting. People should come out and donate to save lives. It’s very important.” Another added, “Some people fear they may die, but once a medical officer clears you, you’re safe to donate.”

Motor rider in court over abduction, defilement

A motor rider has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court charged with abduction and defilement.

Abel Ansah is alleged to have detained the 15-year-old female victim for three days and unlawfully defiled her at Pantang Village in Accra on August 23, 2025.

Ansah, in the company of his counsel, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court has admitted him to GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties.

It further ordered the prosecution to file and serve the court and defence counsel with their disclosures and witness statements.

The matter has been adjourned to November 27 for a Case Management Conference.

The complainant is the older sister of the victim, and they both reside at Pantang Village, the prosecution told the court.

The accused person is a commercial motor rider residing at Nyamebekyere, near Adukrom Akuapem in the Eastern Region, and he is the victim’s boyfriend.

Prosecution held that on August 26, this year, the complainant reported to the “Missing Persons” Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters that her sister had left home for three days and had not returned.

The complainant said on August 23, about 1700 hours, she returned from work and detected that the victim had left home for an unknown place, and all efforts to locate her proved futile.

The court heard that on August 27, 2025, the victim’s older brother, who was also searching for her, found her (the victim) at Akuapem Mamfe and handed her over to the Unit.

Investigations disclosed that the victim completed Junior High School this year at Saforo in the Eastern Region, after which she came to live with the complainant at Pantang Village.

Prosecution said that on August 23, 2025, Ansah communicated with the victim on the phone to visit him at Nyamebekyere and sent her money for transport.

The victim left the house as soon as the complainant also left for work, and she travelled to Nyamebekyere, spending three days with Ansah.

The victim switched off her mobile phone, so her family was unable to reach her. She revealed that during her stay with Ansah, they both had sexual intercourse.

A police medical form was issued to the complainant to seek medical treatment for the victim.

On August 28, 2025, the complainant returned the medical report endorsed by a medical doctor of the Police Hospital, which established “forceful penetration into the victim’s vagina.”

On September 3, 2025, the Station Officer of Amanfrom Police Station, based on the request of the Missing Persons Unit, arrested Ansah and handed him over to the Unit.

He admitted the offence in his caution statement.
