The debate over Chief Justice Torkornoo’s tenure reflects deeper tensions in Ghana’s democracy. While Barker-Vormawor’s rhetoric may be extreme, his underlying concern—judicial accountability—resonates with many Ghanaians. The ball now lies in President Mahama and the Council of State’s court: their decision will either reinforce public trust in the judiciary or deepen perceptions of a captured legal system.

Woman in court for killing her mother for insurance payout
A ‘pastor’ has also been arrested in the case and appeared in court on Thursday.
An Mpumalanga woman is expected to appear in the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on Friday for allegedly orchestrating the death of her mother for an insurance payout.
The 40-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the murder of Emmie Maonye, who was killed last month.
She is the third person to be arrested in relation to the case. Two other suspects, Thapelo Khoza, 25, and Lebo Magopane, 26, appeared in the same court on Thursday, and were denied bail.
Their case has been postponed to next week.
“The Crime Intelligence Unit in Mpumalanga has played a pivotal role in cracking this case,” said Mpumalanga police Brigadier Donald Mdhluli.
‘Dodgy’ 25-year-old pastor
Mdhluli said Khoza, who claimed to be a pastor, was apprehended in Nelspruit for his alleged involvement in a housebreaking and theft case in Mataffin outside Nelspruit in December 2024.
“Subsequent investigations uncovered connections to other crimes, including Maonye’s case. During the arrest, he was found in possession of stolen items serving as crucial evidence.
“Upon further investigation, it was revealed that he was also a part of the people who reportedly orchestrated Maonye’s death, “ added Mdhluli.
Cracked the case
Mpumalanga police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the police for cracking the case.
“The prevalence of alleged murders linked to insurance claims is a disturbing trend. We urge the public to report such cases promptly, and rest assured, the police will diligently investigate these matters to ensure justice prevails.”
Insurance payout murders
There have been several high-profile cases of murders for insurance payouts. Rosemary Ndlovu is currently serving six life sentences for the murders of her partner and other family members after taking out life insurance policies in their names.
Similarly, Limpopo police officer Raesetja Rachel Shokane Kutumela is currently facing 19 charges, including murder, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice.
She allegedly took out several funeral, accidental, and life insurance policies on vulnerable individuals, including some who were disabled or mentally challenged, making herself a beneficiary.
“She is currently linked to about six insurance-related murders, and evidence shows she has pocketed at least R10 million,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Insurance fraud on the rise?
The Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) recently warned of a rise in cases of insurance fraud in the area.
According to the Randburg Sun, CPF public relations officer Freda Boiles said authorities have spotted a trend of people lying about stolen laptops, cellphones, and other valuables to get an insurance payout.

Provide security for final EC declaration in Ablekuma North – NPP to IGP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted that it is waiting on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to provide adequate security for Electoral Commission (EC) officials to declare the outcome of results from the remaining polling stations in Ablekuma North.
The constituency remains without a Member of Parliament following a disagreement between the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the results of the 2024 parliamentary election.
The NDC has since taken the matter to court, seeking an order to have its parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubyn, declared the winner.
Speaking on the issue, the NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, emphasized that the party expects action from the new IGP.
“We have been engaging the new IGP and the Electoral Commission, and we are waiting for security to collate the only three outstanding polling stations,” he said.
“In any event, if you put together a collation of the entire polling station, you will know who has won or lost. So, they just have to put it together, and when they do, the official can tell us who has won or lost,” he added.

Mornyuie Addision Dodzi Is Central Tongu DCE
The President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region has been overwhelmingly approved by the Assembly Members (AMs) at a colourful ceremony at Mafi Adidome, the administrative capital.
Out of the forty (40) AMs who were present and voted at the confirmation ceremony, thirty-eight (38) of them voted ‘Yes’ for Mr. Addison Dodzi Mornyuie, representing ninety-five (95) per cent of the valid votes cast while two (2) AMs objected to his confirmation bid to become the next DCE for the area.
The event was witnessed by a large number of chiefs, and queen mothers as well as a cross-section of citizens of the district including some Members of Parliament (MPs), Heads of Department (HODs) of the Assembly, some past and a few of the just-confirmed DCEs of sister districts and municipalities of the region, some constituency and regional executives of the party as well as a large number of the youth of Mafi Adidome.
One of the unique features of the DCE confirmation in the Central Tongu District was the collective decision of the AMs not to accept any financial favours from the nominee before confirming him. The MP for the area, Hon. Alexander Gabby Hottordze, who disclosed this in an address at the event, said the decision by the AMs was for the interest and development of the district.
According to the MP, the only request the AMs made was for the nominee to organize a party for them after the confirmation if he so wished.
The Regional Minister, Hon, James Gunu, who led the government’s team to the ceremony from the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council (VRCC) at Ho, described the move or gesture by the AMs as highly commendable, saying it was a sign of showing goodwill and love for the total development of the district.
Before the confirmation, some thirteen (13) new Government Appointees were sworn into office by the Dabala District Magistrate Court Judge, Her Worship, Ms. Edith Lucy Dzormeku. This was after she administered the official, allegiance and secrecy oaths to them. Ms. Edith Lucy Dzormeku also administered the same to Mr. Addison Dodzi Mornyuie after the Electoral Officials declared him as having been duly confirmed by the Assembly Members.
In his confirmation speech, the DCE was very grateful to the AMs, the NDC party as a whole and all its executives, the Regional Minister, party supporters, the youth and ultimately the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama for the confidence reposed in him.
Hon. Mornyuie said his leadership would be one of inclusion, transparency, discipline, innovation and action. ‘Together, let us fix our schools, promote youth empowerment, invest in roads and sanitation and uphold peace and unity in our communities’, the new DCE intimated.
The MP for the Central Tongu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Gabby Hottordze stressed the need for unity among the rank and file in the constituency. He called for an end to all unhealthy acts such as backbiting and betrayal that can thwart the developmental efforts of the constituency.
Hon. Hottordze urged the party leaders and supporters not only to remain loyal to the party and its vision but also to bid their time to achieve elevation at the opportune and right time.
The Dufia of Mafi Adidome, Togbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V wished Hon. Addison Dodzi Mornyuie well and pledged his support and that of the other chiefs towards achieving more significant development of the district.
He expressed optimism that the Assembly Members and the DCE would work closely to address the people’s developmental concerns. Togbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V hoped that the involvement of chiefs and queen mothers in district decision-making would be a common feature of the new DCE conduct and priorities.
Ivory Coast threatens more expensive cocoa in response to US tariffs

1 minute read
Ivory Coast, the world’s biggest cocoa producer, could take measures to make the product more expensive if tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump go into effect, the West African country’s agriculture minister said on Thursday.
The Trump administration last week announced tariffs of 21%, the highest in West Africa, on Ivory Coast as part of higher targeted duties on dozens of countries. On Wednesday Trump announced he was pausing them for 90 days.
Speaking to reporters in Abidjan on Thursday, Agriculture Minister Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani said his country wanted Washington to reconsider the tariffs.
“When you tax our product that we export to your country, we will increase the price of cocoa and that will have a repercussion on the price to the consumer,” Kouassi said.
It was not immediately clear what specific measures Kouassi was referring to. Ivory Coast does not have the ability to set the price for cocoa, which is determined by the global market.
However, the country could raise export taxes on cocoa to earn more revenue, which would make the product more expensive for consumers.
“It’s the end consumer who will be harmed,” Kouassi said.
Ivory Coast exports between 200,000 and 300,000 metric tons of cocoa to the U.S. each year, according to data from the Coffee and Cocoa Council (CCC).
Kouassi also said Ivory Coast would seek stronger ties with the European Union to ensure that “if our products are not accepted in the United States, the EU can recover all of them.”

I slept with my husband’s brother and I can’t get him out of my mind
File photo of a worried woman
Dear GhanaWeb,
My husband and I have been married for three years, but we haven’t had kids yet. We decided to take our time as a young couple and focus on building our finances before starting a family. My husband’s brother lives with us temporarily due to a job he secured in our city, so my husband offered to accommodate him for a while.
Recently, we took a family trip out of town to spend a few days together. However, even before the trip, I noticed that my husband’s brother had been giving me strange attention.
Whenever he is around, he’d often act in ways that felt flirtatious, and sometimes, when it was just the two of us, he’d make indirect flirtatious remarks. I never paid much attention to it at first.
During our trip, my husband got busy with something on one of the days, and his brother offered to keep me company.
He suggested taking me to explore a part of the forest, explaining that he had lived in the village for about a year and knew the area well. We chatted as we walked, but eventually, we reached a point where he claimed he didn’t recognize the area, and we ended up getting lost.
We were struggling to find our way back to where we were camped, then he started acting all romantic and caring.
He began talking about how good he could handle me in bed, and he had the courage to grab my breast and kissed me. I was kind of surprised he did that, so I didn’t say anything.
He continued with the romance, and I tried to fight back but the idea of sex in the bush seemed nice to me, so I gave in.
We had sex in the bush and although the feeling was nice, I felt sorry afterwards.
I haven’t really given him a chance to come any closer because I see him like my weakness now. I’m avoiding him and he keeps trying to get closer.
He has been texting me and saying crazy stuffs. I’m always horny when I see his message or himself.
I keep watching his pictures and imagining what we did in the bush but I don’t want to repeat it. I’m scared if my husband should find out, my marriage would be over and I don’t want to divorce my husband because he’s a good man. I want to avoid him completely but it’s becoming harder to handle.
He is driving me crazy and I don’t know what to do.
I don’t get that horny when I’m with my husband. What should I do to forget about my husband’s brother and focus on my husband only?

Watch Godfred Dame’s reaction to AG’s absence in court in CJ removal case
Godfred Yeboah Dame, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice
A former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has expressed dissatisfaction with the adjournment of the hearing for an application aimed at halting the prima facie case determination in the Chief Justice’s impending impeachment process.
The case, filed by Old Tafo MP, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, was scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, April 9.
However, the Supreme Court adjourned the case indefinitely due to the unavailability of state attorneys attending an ECOWAS Court representation training.
Addressing the media after proceedings in court, Godfred Yeboah Dame expressed surprise at the turn of events, describing the AG’s reasons as untenable.
“I find it quite odd for him to say that state attorneys are at a conference and for that matter all the cases in the country should be adjourned. He’s not a state attorney he could not come to court in a case as important as the removal of the Chief Justice; he couldn’t come or extend the courtesy to the court by attending… And what makes it even more odd that they sent state attorneys, not even one but two to inform the court that they’re attending a conference and that they couldn’t attend… I find it as a confirmation of their disregard for the rule of law,” Dame told the media.
Godfred Dame subsequently prayed the court to adjourn the case to Monday, April 14, but his plea was dismissed.
The plaintiff is seeking a Supreme Court declaration that the president’s decision to consult the Council of State on the determination of a prima facie case without first seeking the Chief Justice’s response is unconstitutional.
The court was presided over by Justice Henrietta Mensah Bonsu.

China raises retaliatory tariffs on US imports from 84% to 125%
File photo of China and US flags
China has raised its retaliatory tariffs on US imports from 84% to 125%, on Friday, April 11, 2025.
This follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 145% tariff imposition on China.
According to a statement from the spokesperson of the Chinese Commerce Ministry, and available to the CNN, China has no plans to increase its tariffs on US goods beyond 125%.
“The successive imposition of excessively high tariffs on China by the US has become nothing more than a numbers game, with no real economic significance. It merely further exposes the US practice of weaponising tariffs as a tool of bullying and coercion, turning itself into a joke,” the spokesperson said.
The ministry further stated that China won’t continue to engage the US if it insists on pushing numbers game with tariffs.
“If the US persists in substantively harming China’s interests, China will resolutely take countermeasures and fight to the end,” the spokesperson added.
Experts have warned that the unpredictable, stop-start nature of President Donald Trump’s trade policy will likely dampen investment and could slow global economic growth.
Meanwhile, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, in his first public comment on the escalating trade war with the US, has said that China is not afraid of the US.
“There are no winners in a trade war, and going against the world will only lead to self-isolation. Regardless of how the external environment changes, China will remain confident, stay focused, and concentrate on managing its own affairs well,” Xi told Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, in Beijing.

Samsam residents lament deplorable roads, demand urgent fix
Residents of Samsam, a community in the Ga West Municipality, have expressed deep frustration over the poor condition of their roads, which they say has severely affected their daily lives and economic activities.
According to them, the deplorable nature of the roads has not only hindered transportation but also impacted key sectors like education and commerce.
“I have lived here for three years. In this town, our roads are very bad, and due to that, we find it difficult to get a car to our workplace, and that affects us,” said Abigail, a teacher and resident of the community.
She noted that the situation has discouraged teachers posted to the area from staying, leading to challenges in the education sector.
“Most of the teachers who are posted here resist staying in the community due to the poor nature of the road, resulting in difficulties in getting a car, and that affects productivity in the school as well,” she explained.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, April 11, she added, “We are pleading with the government to put the road into good shape for us so that we can have the empathy and the energy to work in the area.” Abigail added.
Drivers who operate in the area also shared similar concerns. Samuel Appiah, who has been driving in the area for nine years, stated that the road has deteriorated significantly over time.
“I have driven on the road for nine years. The road used to be good in the earlier years, but the current state of the road has damaged our cars. Due to that, the drivers find it difficult to ply the road,” he lamented.
He further appealed for urgent government intervention. “We beg the authorities to divert their attention here and construct the road for us because there are students and workers here who come in the morning to pick cars, so if they come and there are no cars available, it’s disturbing,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the Kono Electoral Area, J.B. Dankwa, acknowledged the ongoing construction efforts but admitted that challenges remain.
“There is a contractor now on the road working, and we are grateful for the intervention of the government. But still, the situation persists, and the number of risks involved is high. People queue up early in the morning to get cars, yet there are no cars available,” he stated. He also raised concerns about the economic toll on commuters.
“The poor road also amounts to passenger cost. We are also pleading with the government to intervene for the contractors who are on the road to hasten the job, and they shouldn’t just construct the drain; they should complete the road,” he urged.

GUTA happy with Trump’s tariff retreat
Business players in Ghana have expressed satisfaction with the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to suspend the 10% tariff on all exports to the United States.
The move follows growing concern over steep tariffs imposed on many of the U.S.’s trading partners, which have sparked volatility in global financial markets. Ghana was among the countries affected by the tariff, which disrupted trade and export activities.
The 10% levy, unilaterally introduced by President Trump, targeted imports from around the world, including key Ghanaian exports such as garments, textiles, cashew, shea butter, fruits, vegetables, yam, and cocoa products.
Speaking to Citi Business News, Head of the Business and Economic Bureau at the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Charles Kusi Appiah, welcomed the decision.
“When he (Donald Trump) has realized that he is biting more than he can chew and he wants to hold on, hallelujah. But of course it shouldn’t end there,” he said.
He further emphasized the need for African nations to strengthen intra-continental trade.
“So it’s a wake-up call to us to start putting our house together, looking at how we can create market on our African continent,” he added.
The Ghana Chamber of Mines pushes back against new 3% levy
The Ghana Chamber of Mines has pushed back against recent justifications for increasing the Growth and Sustainability Levy (GSL), saying that they misrepresent the mining industry’s contribution to the national economy.
Government recently raised the GSL from 1% to 3% in the 2025 Budget, arguing that the country has yet to fully capture economic rent from its natural resources, particularly in the wake of rising global gold prices. However, the Chamber contends that this narrative overlooks key facts.
“Some reports suggest that extractive sector rents represent 14% of gross domestic product while extractive sector revenue accounts for approximately 1.5% of GDP,” the chamber said in a statement.

“These statistics encompass the entire extractive sector.”
Citing World Bank data, the Chamber noted that mineral rents specifically averaged below 3% of GDP between 1990 and 2021, ranging from 2.4% in 2015 to 5.2% in 2021.
It also emphasised the difference between mineral rent and revenue. “Mineral rent is a residual value, the excess revenue from mineral extraction after covering all costs, including investor returns,” the Chamber said.
“It cannot exceed mineral revenue, nor can its GDP ratio surpass that of mineral revenue.”
According to the Chamber, mineral revenue from its member companies contributed about 8% of Ghana’s GDP in 2024.
The mining industry body further argued that mineral rents are not captured solely by investors but are shared among stakeholders, including government, local communities and mining companies. It cited the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) which estimates that Ghana’s government captures around 50% of mineral rent, with some figures suggesting it could be over 60%.
“These figures show that mining companies already contribute significantly under the existing fiscal regime,” the Chamber said.
While gold prices have surged in recent years, the Chamber warned that not all mining firms have benefitted equally. Variations in operational costs and investment levels mean some companies have not seen meaningful profit increases.
The Chamber also raised concerns that the revised GSL places an uneven burden on the sector. Producers of other minerals like manganese and bauxite, which have not enjoyed gold’s price boom, will also be affected by the higher levy.
“We have consistently raised concerns about the levy since its introduction and maintain our position following the rate hike,” the statement said.
Despite its objections, the Chamber said it remains open to dialogue and is committed to working with the Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources and Finance to ease the impact on struggling companies while supporting broader government revenue goals.
On the issue of ownership structure and fiscal framework of the mining sector, the Chamber asserted that it has evolved in response to changing economic, social and environmental priorities.
“During the 1960s and 1970s, government nationalised or took controlling interests in mining companies under the State Gold Mining Corporation (SGMC). However, SGMC faced severe financial and operational challenges, leading to a 60% decline in national mineral production and a 45% drop in mining employment between 1970 and 1982.”
This downturn, it said, contributed significantly to the country’s economic crisis in the 1980s.
“To revitalise the sector and attract investment, government divested state-owned mines and introduced new legal frameworks. The current lease-based royalty-tax system remains the predominant global model for mining sector agreements.”
The Chamber said it welcomes discussions on alternative legal and fiscal structures for the sector, including increased state participation. However, any changes must consider lessons from past experiences.
Also, it observed that between 2020 and 2023 member companies spent an average of US$2.87 billion annually on locally sourced goods and services, while tax contributions and corporate social investments averaged US$1.19 billion and US$32 million.
These domestic expenditures, it maintained, are the primary channels through which mineral revenues support national development.
“From 2020 to 2023, approximately 75% of mineral revenues were repatriated through local financial institutions, countering claims that investors retain a disproportionate share offshore.
To enhance transparency and accountability in mineral revenue management, the Chamber has been advocating a legislative framework similar to the Petroleum Revenue Management Act for the mining sector. “
It said such a policy would highlight mining’s significant role in national development.
Semenyo, Kudus’ potential move to Liverpool over?
L-R: Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo
Considerable doubt has been cast over Black Stars duo Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus’ potential move to Liverpool.
Both Semenyo and Kudus have been on Liverpool’s radar as potential replacements for Mohamed Salah, who seemed more likely to leave than stay at the start of 2025.
Salah was on the verge of an exit, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. However, the Egyptian now appears to be “more in than out.”
He has signed a new two-year deal with Liverpool and is set to stay until 2027, extending his spell at the club to a decade.
Liverpool announced the contract extension on Friday, April 11, 2025, as the club legend prepares for a final run-in.
The extension significantly reduces Liverpool’s chances of signing a new winger in the summer, making the signing of Kudus or Semenyo unlikely.
Kudus, who has been on the Reds’ shortlist since his Ajax days, was seen as a direct replacement for Salah due to their similar playing styles.
However, the Ghanaian star has struggled for form this season, scoring just three goals and providing two assists in 25 Premier League games.
Semenyo, on the other hand, was linked with a move to the Merseyside club due to his versatility in playing on both wings and his strong performances for Bournemouth this season.
The former Bristol City striker could still leave Bournemouth, although a move to Liverpool now looks unlikely.
He has scored seven goals and provided five assists in 30 league games.

Smear campaign on social media will not distract me – Mahama Ayariga
Bawku Central Member of Parliament (MP), Mahama Ayariga, has once again condemned the recent violence in the region, which has resulted in fatalities, injuries, and the destruction of his property.
In a statement, the Majority Leader also addressed a smear campaign against him on social media, reaffirming his commitment to peace and urging the public to ignore politically motivated falsehoods.
Ayariga expressed concern about the growing frustration among the youth due to the slow resolution of the ongoing Bawku and Kusaug conflict.
He also acknowledged the concerns about the conduct of certain law enforcement officers, which he described as a source of anger among the youth.
Currently on official duty outside the country, Ayariga sympathized with those affected by the violence and appealed for calm in the community.
“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers,” he said.
Reaffirming his support for the ongoing peace process, Ayariga urged residents of Bawku and Kusaug to stay committed to the mediation efforts being led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The MP noted that both the Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, Overlord of Kusaug, and the Nayiri Naa Bɔhagu Mahami Sheriga, Overlord of Mamprugu, were fully participating in the peace dialogue.
“I want to assure the people of Bawku and Kusaug that I remain resolute and committed to a lasting resolution of the matter according to the well-established laws and judicial decisions of Ghana,” he added.
US Supreme Court orders return of migrant wrongly deported to El Salvador
The US Supreme Court has ordered the government to “facilitate” the return of a wrongly deported Salvadoran man, in a decision seen as a small victory against President Donald Trump’s immigration policy.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, 29, was living in the eastern state of Maryland until he became one of more than 200 people sent to a prison in El Salvador last month as part of Trump’s crackdown on undocumented migrants.
Most of the deportees were suspected members of Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, which the Trump administration has declared a “foreign terrorist organisation”.
But Justice Department lawyers later admitted that Garcia, who is married to a United States citizen, was deported due to an “administrative error”.
In a decision issued on Thursday, the conservative-majority Supreme Court ordered the government to “‘facilitate” Garcia’s release from custody in an El Salvador prison “and to ensure that his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent to El Salvador”.
Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, a lawyer for Abrego Garcia, hailed the court’s ruling, saying “the rule of law prevailed”.
Garcia had been living in the US under protected legal status since 2019 when a judge ruled he should not be deported because he could be harmed in his home country.
Following his deportation and internment in the notorious CECOT counterterrorist prison, lower courts had ordered that the US government return him to the US by midnight on Monday.
The Supreme Court put that order on hold hours before the deadline, after the administration requested an emergency ruling.

Government committed to strengthening health education and infrastructure – Deputy finance minister
Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem
The Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has reaffirmed government’s firm commitment to strengthening health education and improving healthcare infrastructure in the country.
He made this statement at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi last Thursday.
Speaking before an audience of academics, students, health professionals, and government officials, Mr. Ampem highlighted that the 2025 Budget, which was recently passed by Parliament, allocated more than GH¢2 billion to healthcare infrastructure development from now until 2028, a move that will help strengthen health infrastructure in most part of the country.
“As a government, we understand that quality healthcare begins with quality training. That’s why in the 2025 budget, we have committed over two billion cedis towards healthcare infrastructure between now and 2028,” he said.
He revealed that GH¢200 million of this amount will be spent in 2025 alone on critical infrastructure projects, including support for institutions like the KNUST School of Medical Sciences.
“Specifically, in 2025, GH¢200 million has been earmarked for vital projects such as what you are about to start here. These investments are not just numbers—they represent lives saved, health restored, and futures secured,” the Deputy Minister stated.
Uncapping Health Insurance for a Healthier Ghana
Mr. Ampem also disclosed a major policy shift in the administration of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), one that is set to provide significant relief to Ghanaians.
He said the National Health Insurance has been uncapped with a GH¢9.9 billion allocation for key interventions such as the Free Primary Healthcare programme and the Ghana Medical Care Trust also known as Mahama Cares.
“These initiatives reflect our dedication to ensuring that every Ghanaian, regardless of income level or location, has access to quality healthcare,” he added.
The Mahama Cares programme, a flagship initiative under the incoming administration’s health agenda, is expected to roll out in phases, focusing on strengthening primary healthcare delivery, especially in underserved communities.
*A Call for Deeper Investment in Medical Education*
The 50th anniversary of the School of Medical Sciences at KNUST was not only a celebration of five decades of academic excellence and medical training but also a platform to highlight the urgent need for strategic investment in medical education.
In his welcome address, the Dean of the School, Prof. Christian Agyare, emphasized the critical role the institution has played in producing doctors, researchers, and healthcare professionals who serve both Ghana and the wider sub-region. He noted, however, that the demand for medical professionals continues to outpace the supply due to limited infrastructure, equipment, and training resources.
“Our school has come a long way in 50 years, but the challenges of today require bold and intentional support from all stakeholders, particularly government. We cannot solve the country’s healthcare deficit without first solving the problem of inadequate training facilities and resources,” Prof. Agyare stated.
Future Prospects
In a timely assurance, Mr. Ampem pledged to the university community and Ghanaians at large that government remains committed to working closely with academic institutions, health practitioners, and development partners to expand access to medical education and modern healthcare delivery.
“The Government of Ghana sees the KNUST School of Medical Sciences not just as an academic institution but as a national asset. We will continue to support your growth, because when you succeed, Ghana’s healthcare system succeeds,” he emphasized.
Bolt records 42% drop in offline trips in Ghana following safety overhaul
Bolt Ghana has announced a 42 per cent reduction in offline (off-app) trips across its platform, following the rollout of a series of enhanced safety measures aimed at protecting both passengers and drivers.
The drop, observed over the past six months, reflects growing compliance with Bolt’s platform policies and marks a significant shift towards safer ride-hailing practices in the country.
The company in a statement attributed the reduction to stricter enforcement protocols and targeted interventions aimed at discouraging off-platform transactions—an informal practice that bypasses key in-app safety features such as GPS tracking, verified driver and passenger identification, and emergency response tools.
“This drop in offline trips demonstrates a growing culture of accountability and safety within Ghana’s ride-hailing ecosystem,” said Hazel May Omune, Safety Lead for Bolt Africa.
“It’s the result of deliberate actions we’ve taken behind the scenes to ensure every trip on our platform is secure, trackable, and compliant with our safety protocols.”
To support this progress, Bolt introduced a range of safety-focused measures, including a zero-tolerance policy for off-app rides, real-time trip monitoring, and automated systems that flag unusual activity.
In addition, the company has expanded its driver training programmes and intensified public education campaigns to raise awareness about the risks associated with booking rides outside the app.
Offline trips remain a concern across the ride-hailing industry, particularly because they lack the in-built protections provided by app-based services. By curbing their occurrence, Bolt is reinforcing its commitment to building a trustworthy and technology-driven transport network in Ghana.
“Safety is not just a feature—it’s a mindset we are embedding across every level of our platform,” Ms Omune added. “We’re proud of the progress so far, but this is just the beginning. We’ll continue to work with drivers, passengers, regulators, and industry partners to raise the bar for safety in urban mobility.”
Bolt is encouraging all users to continue booking trips through the app in order to benefit from its full suite of safety tools, including live GPS tracking, driver ratings, in-app SOS buttons, and 24/7 support. The company also reaffirmed its ongoing investment in technology and partnerships to promote safety, compliance, and transparency in Ghana’s ride-hailing sector.

From L to R: Annie Macaulay, 2baba and Natasha
Shortly after Annie officially dropped her estranged husband 2Baba’s surname, Idibia, his new partner Natasha Osawuru has boldly picked it up, wearing it like a badge of honour.
Formerly known as Annie Idibia, the actress took to social media to reintroduce herself as Annie Uwana Macaulay, marking a significant step in her healing journey amid her separation and ongoing divorce from Innocent “2Baba” Idibia.
While many fans praised Annie for moving on from what has been described as a toxic marriage, Natasha stirred up major controversy by updating her social media bio to read “Honourable Natasha IDIBIA”, with the surname in all caps.
The move quickly caught public attention, as it came immediately after Annie renounced the surname.
The development has since triggered widespread backlash online, with many netizens accusing Natasha of being desperate.
Critics questioned why she was so quick to adopt the Idibia name despite not being legally married to the singer.
Annie returns to social media
After a prolonged social media break, reportedly due to health challenges and emotional distress, Annie made a quiet but powerful comeback.
Rumours had circulated that she was battling mental health issues following the divorce, with some reports alleging she spent time in rehab.
In her return, Annie wiped all her Instagram posts and shared a message, thanking fans and well-wishers for their overwhelming support during her darkest moments.
Many have since expressed hope that Annie will find peace, healing, and a fresh start after what has been a difficult chapter in her life.
2Baba’s divorce announcement
On January 26, 2025, 2Baba took to his Instagram stories to state that he and Annie have been separated for some time and have officially filed for divorce.
He wrote, “Hello to my beautiful people of all federations. Well, this thing I have to say is short but also long… Annie Macaulay and I have been separated for a while now, and we’ve currently filed for divorce.
“I will grant a press release soon to share my story. Not because it is anyone’s right to know about my personal life, but because I love my people and I need them to know my innocence or offense. Stay blessed, my people. I love you all.”
The couple’s 12-year marriage has been in the public eye, particularly with claims of infidelity involving 2Baba.
2Baba’s mother’s concern
Amid the drama, 2Baba’s mother took to social media to express concern over her son’s whereabouts.
According to her, 2Baba has been missing from his home and is now believed to be living with Natasha in Benin State.
She bitterly lamented that her son is “under a spell,” suggesting that Natasha has a tight grip on the musician.
Since then, 2Baba and Natasha have been inseparable, regularly flaunting their relationship on social media.
Natasha, a sitting member of the Edo State House of Assembly, is often seen taking 2Baba along to official engagements and political functions.

Fabulous Ankara-Inspired Kaba and Slit Styles for Modern Women
Ankara fabrics have long been a staple in African fashion, and they continue to evolve with creative and stylish designs that perfectly blend tradition with modern trends. One of the standout styles for modern women is the Kaba and Slit outfit, which combines the elegance of the traditional kaba (a form of dress) with the seductive flair of a slit. Here are some fabulous Ankara-inspired kaba and slit styles that modern women can rock with confidence:
1. Classic Kaba with Side Slit
This timeless design combines the bold patterns of Ankara fabric with the sophisticated cut of a kaba. The top part is beautifully tailored to emphasize the bust and waist, while the skirt flows elegantly to the floor, with a deep side slit to showcase your legs. It’s perfect for those who want to combine grace with a hint of allure.
2. Ankara Kaba and Front Slit Gown
For an ultra-modern twist on the traditional kaba, consider a full-length gown that features a front slit. This style maintains the flowy and regal silhouette of the kaba but adds a contemporary edge with the slit running from the front of the dress. The front slit can be as subtle or as bold as you like, and this design works well with bold Ankara prints.
3. Off-Shoulder Kaba and Slit Dress
Add a modern flair to your kaba dress by opting for an off-shoulder design. This style adds sophistication and boldness to your outfit while allowing you to show off your collarbones and shoulders. The slit, positioned on one side, adds just enough drama without being overly revealing.
4. Peplum Kaba with Slit Detail
The peplum-style kaba is a feminine and flattering option that features a flared top and a fitted lower body. The addition of a thigh-high slit adds a bold and dramatic effect, making this outfit ideal for evening occasions or cocktail events. The Ankara fabric can be bold and colorful, making this style pop.
5. Tailored Kaba with Slit and Cape Sleeve
This style is perfect for women looking for a sleek and sophisticated look. The tailored kaba fits perfectly on the upper body and waist, creating a smooth, sculpted figure. The addition of a slit on the side allows for movement and an added touch of sexiness. For added flair, cape sleeve or dramatic sleeves are attached, giving the dress an elevated, royal feel.
Ankara-inspired Kaba and Slit styles are a wonderful way to bring together the beauty of traditional African fabrics with modern cuts and designs. Whether you’re going for a more understated look or aiming to make a bold statement, there are endless variations of the Kaba and Slit styles to choose from. The combination of a well-fitted kaba with a sleek slit creates an alluring silhouette that is both chic and timeless.
China raises tariffs on US goods to 125%
China has announced a new 125% tariff on US imports, marking a sharp increase from the 84% rate introduced on Wednesday, April 9. This move brings China’s tariff level in line with the current US tariff on Chinese goods.
This latest development follows US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for dozens of countries. However, the US has moved ahead with an increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, raising them to 125%.
Earlier this month, President Trump introduced a “baseline” tariff of 10% on all countries while reserving higher rates for what he described as the “worst offenders.”
He explained that although the elevated rates would be suspended for 90 days, a “reciprocal tariff” of 10% would apply in the interim.
Despite the temporary pause for other nations, Trump emphasized that the tariff on China would still rise to 125%, citing what he called “the lack of respect that China has shown to the world’s markets.”

Ghanaian artistes need to embrace live band performances
Ghanaian musician Ayisi performing at an event
Ghanaian musician Emmanuel Kwadwo Oware, popularly known as Ayisi, has urged his colleagues to improve their craft by performing with live bands.
According to him, the ability to perform with a live band is true proof to an artiste’s professionalism, and he believes many in the industry are falling short.
Speaking in an interview with AJ Sarpong on 3FM, Ayisi noted that performing with a live band demands a different level of discipline and stage presence compared to simply singing over a PA system or pre-recorded backing tracks, which he believes is easy.
Ayisi further praised gospel artistes for setting a standard when it comes to live music, noting that their commitment to rehearsals and real-time instrumentation gives them a natural advantage on stage.
“Performing with a live band is different from performing with a PA system. If you haven’t been doing live performances or training for some time, it will become apparent.
“This is why gospel artists excel in live performances; they rehearse and play shows with live bands consistently, and it shows in their work,” Ayisi stated.
In contrast, he pointed out that many secular artistes rely heavily on studio tricks and vocal enhancements that fail to translate in live performances.
“It’s relatively easy to go into a studio, piece together tracks and rely on auto-tuning. But artistes need to show workings,” he added.
By using what he described as “show workings,” Ayisi encouraged artistes to prove their artistry beyond what fans hear on recorded tracks.

Mining industry pushes back against new 3% levy
Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance
The Ghana Chamber of Mines has pushed back against recent justifications for increasing the Growth and Sustainability Levy (GSL), saying that they misrepresent the mining industry’s contribution to the national economy.
Government recently raised the GSL from 1 percent to 3 percent in the 2025 Budget, arguing that the country has yet to fully capture economic rent from its natural resources – particularly in the wake of rising global gold prices. However, the Chamber contends that this narrative overlooks key facts.
“Some reports suggest that extractive sector rents represent 14 percent of gross domestic product while extractive sector revenue accounts for approximately 1.5 percent of GDP,” the chamber said in a statement.
“These statistics encompass the entire extractive sector.”
Citing World Bank data, the Chamber noted that mineral rents specifically averaged below 3 percent of GDP between 1990 and 2021, ranging from 2.4 percent in 2015 to 5.2 percent in 2021.
According to the Chamber, mineral revenue from its member companies contributed about 8 percent of Ghana’s GDP in 2024.
The mining industry body further argued that mineral rents are not captured solely by investors but are shared among stakeholders, including government, local communities and mining companies. It cited the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) which estimates that Ghana’s government captures around 50 percent of mineral rent, with some figures suggesting it could be over 60 percent.
“We’ve consistently raised concerns about the levy since its introduction and maintain our position following the rate hike,” the statement said.
However, SGMC faced severe financial and operational challenges, leading to a 60 percent decline in national mineral production and a 45 percent drop in mining employment between 1970 and 1982.”
Also, it observed that between 2020 and 2023 member companies spent an average of US$2.87billion annually on locally sourced goods and services, while tax contributions and corporate social investments averaged US$1.19billion and US$32million.
These domestic expenditures, it maintained, are the primary channels through which mineral revenues support national development.
“From 2020 to 2023, approximately 75 percent of mineral revenues were repatriated through local financial institutions, countering claims that investors retain a disproportionate share offshore.
To enhance transparency and accountability in mineral revenue management, the Chamber has been advocating a legislative framework similar to the Petroleum Revenue Management Act for the mining sector. “
It said such a policy would highlight mining’s significant role in national development.

‘My Healthy Baker’ initiative brings free health screening to 7,750 bakers across Ghana
To boost hygiene standards and promote public health within Ghana’s bakery industry, Olam Agri and Twentyth Consult, in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and various Municipal Assemblies, has rolled out a national health initiative dubbed “My Healthy Baker.”
The campaign, now underway in Accra, is targeting over 2,500 bakers and bakery workers in the capital as part of a nationwide goal of reaching 7,750 participants.
The program offers free health and breast screening services, covering Hepatitis B, Hemoglobin (HB) levels, Typhoid, Worm infestation, and Breast cancer screening.
It also includes intensive education on personal hygiene and food safety practices to ensure that bakers meet both legal and health standards.
Officials of Olam Agri, the lead sponsor through its Grains Business, explained that the initiative is a core part of the company’s broader hygiene and public wellness agenda.
“Many workers of the respective bakeries have never performed a health check,” an official release from Olam stated.
“The initiative is a key component of Olam Agri’s comprehensive hygiene agenda, primarily aimed at educating and monitoring hygiene standards and compliance protocols at selected bakeries throughout Ghana.
“The addition reflects the company’s commitment to public health and wellness, extending its focus beyond the traditional annual breast cancer awareness month in October”. The statement added.
The initiative is also helping bakers acquire food handling certificates, a legal requirement for all food vendors in Ghana, but one that many bakery workers struggle to obtain or renew due to limited awareness and accessibility.
“This initiative addresses the legal requirement for food vendors to provide an annual medical health certificate, a mandate that many bakers and their workers are either unaware of or do not fully understand its importance”. The statement added.
The campaign began earlier this year in the Western Region, covering towns like Takoradi and Aboadze, before moving to Greater Accra. It will be replicated in other regions in the coming months.
Health experts conducting the screening noted several cases requiring follow-up care, particularly related to blood pressure and Hepatitis B.
A midwifery officer at Abokobi Health Centre in Accra, Elizabeth Ofosua Danquah, emphasized the importance of regular health checks.
“Based on my findings, I have realized that a lot of our women have high BP, and lots of them are going through stress. They don’t have time to rest because of what they are doing. So if we can have a workshop to educate them on stress management, marriage counselling, human relationships, I think it will be of great importance to them.”
Participants were also taken through sessions on best hygiene practices, including hand washing, use of gloves and aprons, and maintaining sanitary bakery environments.
Several bakers lauded the initiative.
A baker at Ashaiman Vaalco flat, Glady’s Odonkor said, “The initiative is a good one, sometimes when you work, you need to get insight on the job. I got educated and screened as well. If we are able to adhere to all that was said, it will really help us in our bakery production”.
Another resident at Ashaiman Night Market, Ahmadiya Mamudu, said, “We have been screened thoroughly; I was screened for BP, and pressure. We are grateful to Olam Agri and their partners for the initiative, and I hope they keep remembering us whenever they are coming up with initiatives like this.”
As the campaign continues, Olam Agri and Twentyth Consult say the goal is to deliver value to customers through health programs that positively impact the lives within the baking community.

Akuapem Polooo Shows Off The Car She Got From Her Baby Daddy As Her Push Gift
Social media was buzzing on Thursday when Ghanaian actress and socialite Akuapem Poloo proudly showed off a brand-new Mitsubishi car — a gift from her baby daddy following the birth of their child.
Clad in her usual vibrant energy and dazzling smile, Poloo took to her Instagram page to share the news with her fans. “This is my push gift from my baby daddy,” she captioned a video of the sleek vehicle parked in her compound. “I’m so grateful. God bless him.”
Push gifts — tokens of appreciation from fathers to mothers after childbirth — are becoming increasingly common in Ghana. What used to be a trend mostly seen in foreign celebrity culture is now taking root locally, with many Ghanaian men stepping up to show love and appreciation for their partners after delivery.
“It’s become a trend that when women give birth, the men responsible now give them gifts to say thank you,” said Ama Serwaa, a midwife based in Accra. “And honestly, after seeing what women go through during labor, it’s only fair. A little appreciation goes a long way.”
Akuapem Poloo, who gave birth just a few weeks ago, is the latest in a growing list of women publicly celebrating their post-delivery gifts. While some receive jewelry, pampering trips, or spa vouchers, Poloo’s baby daddy pulled no stops with a Mitsubishi ride.
Fans and followers took to the comment section to congratulate her, with one person hilariously writing, “Congratulations to her oo. Let me go and find someone’s daughter so we do the kimkim some because I have some half plot I’m not using for anything so I give it to her as push gift.”
Reactions like this highlight how the idea of push gifts is sparking conversations not just about relationships, but about how men express gratitude and support after childbirth.
Whether it’s a car or a heartfelt gesture, one thing is clear — celebrating the journey of motherhood is becoming a bigger part of Ghanaian culture, and Akuapem Poloo is right at the center of that spotlight once again.

CNN —
Three Americans have been transferred to the United States after their death sentences over a foiled deadly coup were commuted to life imprisonment last week by Congolese authorities, in the wake of talks with US government officials.

Set clear deadlines in galamsey fight
Stakeholders in the energy sector are urging the government to establish a clear and enforceable timeframe to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
They believe that holding key authorities accountable within a defined period is essential to effectively tackling the issue.
Some stakeholders argue that individuals with political connections who are involved in illegal mining should be dealt with first, before attention is turned to small-scale miners on the ground.
Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Benjamin Nsiah, emphasized the need for decisive action.
“As a country, we need to set a clear timeframe within which we can resolve this issue. During that period, we must identify and confront the drivers of unsustainable mining,” he stated.
Nsiah also recommended using frameworks like the GON theory—commonly applied in corruption studies—to understand the motivations behind galamsey.
“Some engage in illegal mining because they have the opportunity, others out of necessity, and some due to the access they enjoy at the highest levels of governance,” he explained.

Campaigning for the NDC party was based on his strong belief in the abilities of now President Mahama to turn things around for the country.
In response to a question of whether he would accept a government appointment in a recent chat with Graphic Showbiz, he answered affirmatively but clarified that his support for President Mahama was not for personal gains.
He explained that he supported President Mahama to help the country choose the right leader and would take a post only if it matched his interests.
“Yes, I would gladly accept any position that aligns with my interests. However, my support for H.E. John Dramani Mahama in the last elections was not about getting an appointment but to help Ghana choose the right leader. As a patriotic citizen of Ghana, I believe we made the right choice,” he said.

‘I will shoot to death anyone who raids my home without a warrant’
NPP Third Vice National Chairman, Alhaji Masawudu Osman
Third Vice National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawudu Osman, has issued a stern warning that he will shoot anyone who invades his home without a court warrant under the guise of a National Security operation.
His comments follow an incident in which about 20 operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), armed with AK-47 rifles, attempted to arrest the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend Ntim Fordjour, at his residence.
The arrest was thwarted when members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by their leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, alongside senior figures from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), rushed to the MP’s home in solidarity and demanded a bench warrant.
Reverend Ntim Fordjour had earlier alleged that two foreign flights, which suspiciously landed in Ghana in March 2025, were involved in cocaine trafficking and money laundering activities. These claims have been strongly denied by the John Mahama-led government, which has urged the MP to cooperate fully with the country’s security agencies as investigations continue.
Speaking on the matter during a panel discussion on Original TV, Alhaji Masawudu Osman stated that he would treat any unauthorized intrusion into his home as a criminal act.
“Everyone in Ghana should take their security seriously. The country is not in a good state right now. You could be at home peacefully, and before you know it, your house is invaded in the name of a National Security operation. At this rate, people’s homes are being ransacked—soon, lives will be lost,” he said.
“But me, Alhaji Masawudu—by the power vested in me as the National Vice Chairman of the NPP—if I am at my house in East Legon and I see people entering my home to attack me without any verbal notice or a court warrant, I will treat them as armed robbers. I will gun them down.”
When the host of the show reminded him that, as a responsible leader of the largest opposition party, he should use appropriate legal channels to address such concerns rather than take the law into his own hands, Alhaji Masawudu responded:
“I can only channel my concerns through the appropriate quarters if I’m alive. What if I die? It could very well be that the people who invade your house are not even from National Security.”

Use Minority Leader to summon Ntim Fordjour
Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Blay Nyameke Armah, has backed calls for the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to channel the summoning of Assin South Member of Parliament Rev. John Ntim Fordjour through Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
His call follows a foiled attempt by the NIB to arrest the Assin South MP, who doubles as the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, on Wednesday, April 9, at his residence.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, April 10, Armah stressed that there is a need to go through the right means, as Ntim Fordjour is a member of parliament
He explained that the NIB should only resort to arrest if Rev. Ntim Fordjour fails to cooperate.
“I believe that they need to do it diligently by inviting him through his Leader, who is the Minority Leader. I think as an honourable member, he has to be given the chance again by approaching the Minority and then requesting the Minority Leader that look ‘Can you please make available your member’.
“I think that will help, but if that fails, force must then be applied,” he stated.
