Tau Alpha Lambda (TAL) Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Ghana Alphas) has reaffirmed its commitment to educational development in Ghana with a significant donation to Abeadze State College. This initiative, consistent with the fraternity’s mission to promote scholarship and community upliftment, brought hope and encouragement to the students and faculty of the only Senior High School in the Abeadze Traditional Area.

The donated items—including two water pumps for the boys’ dormitories, dining hall tables and chairs, a cooker, and a refrigerator for the Home Science Department—were made possible through the collective efforts of Ghanaian members of Alpha Phi Alpha in the Americas and Ghana.

The donation event was held on the school grounds and witnessed by a large gathering of students, faculty, and traditional authorities. Dignitaries present included Dasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, Paramount Chief of the Abeadze Traditional Area and his sub-chiefs, Headmistress Helena Sarpong, Assemblyman Charles Ennim, executives of the Parent-Teacher Association, teachers, and over 350 enthusiastic students.

Speaking on behalf of the fraternity, Vice President Dr. Nana Kweku Nduom expressed TAL’s unwavering dedication to the school’s progress. He stated, “This marks Phase II of our relationship with the school. Alphas promote scholarship, and to us, education is premium. Our unique relationship with the Omanhene will bring us back again—for Phase III and beyond.”

Dr. Nduom was accompanied and supported by fellow members of Tau Alpha Lambda: Nana Ofori Owusu, Ivan Hoffman, Michael Owusu, and Andrew Amoo, who all exemplified the fraternity’s unified spirit and commitment to service.

In a heartfelt show of gratitude, Dasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, Omanhene of Abeadze Traditional Area, extended his deepest appreciation to Tau Alpha Lambda and the global Alpha Phi Alpha community. He remarked, “This is a profound gesture to support the only Senior High School in my community. We are grateful. I urge the school authorities and students to take very good care of these items so that others will be encouraged to also support the school in future.”

Headmistress Helena Sarpong also expressed sincere thanks to the fraternity: “We are grateful to the Alphas across the world. You have answered a critical need. However, I must humbly place before you that our bathroom facilities are in horrible shape. If there is to be a Phase III, which would be our most urgent area of need.”

A highlight of the event came when Dr. Nduom thrilled the audience with an Alpha Phi Alpha step performance, sparking cheers and applause from students and dignitaries alike.

Following the donation ceremony, the team was warmly hosted at the Omanhene’s palace, where discussions focused on deepening the relationship and identifying future areas of support. Tau Alpha Lambda remains committed to advancing educational excellence and community service in Ghana. This donation marks another milestone in the fraternity’s legacy of uplifting communities through unity and purpose.

Accra, May 19, GNA – The women’s rights and gender equality coalitions have called for a thoughtful consideration of the broader implications surrounding the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. 

The coalitions, which include the Affirmative Action Law Coalition, the Domestic Violence Coalition, and the Women Manifesto Coalition in Ghana, noted that the trend of removing individuals from strategic constitutional and institutional leadership positions, especially women, whenever there was a change of government, was uncalled for. 

A statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the pattern not only undermined the principles of constitutional governance but also weakened public trust in institutions. 

Touching on the Affirmative Action Act, it said such actions sent discouraging messages to competent women, who might consider serving their nation as key public office holders. 

“In light of the Chief Justice’s suspension, and under Article 147(6) of the Constitution, we wish to acknowledge the President’s expression of commitment to following due process during this challenging time,”it said. 

“Transparency and adherence to constitutional guidelines are pivotal in maintaining the integrity of our institutions, and we recognise the importance of these principles in the President’s decisions.”  

However, Ghana must be seen to be amplifying the role of women in society since we are signatory to all conventions and agreements on women’s rights, gender equality, and democratic governance, the statement said. 

It said it was essential for all to reflect on how to support and uplift women leaders in society while ensuring accountability in leadership.  

Encouraging diversity and actively fostering an environment where women could thrive and their contributions recognised was vital to the collective progress, it added. 

The statement highlighted inadequacies and the lack of prioritisation in the implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024 (Act 1121) by the State.  

The section 14(2) of Act 1121 mandating a minimum of 30 per cent representation of women in decision-making positions was yet to be achieved. 

It called for the need for a thoughtful consideration of the broader implications over the recent suspension, particularly in the context of women in central leadership roles and the promotion of gender equality and justice.

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has charged the newly inaugurated Board of the National Insurance Commission (NIC) to expand insurance coverage and access to all segments of Ghanaian society, with a particular focus on the informal and agricultural sectors.

Speaking on behalf of the finance minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, expressed concern over Ghana’s low insurance penetration rate, currently below 2%.

“We must think differently, act boldly, and innovate deliberately to build a thriving and inclusive insurance ecosystem,” the Deputy Minister emphasised.

He highlighted the critical importance of extending insurance protection to the informal sector, which constitutes nearly 80% of Ghana’s economy.

The Deputy Minister stressed the need for insurance products that are tailored to the everyday realities of farmers, artisans, market traders, and other underserved groups.

“When a farmer in Garu loses a harvest to floods, or a trader in Makola loses stock to fire, the absence of insurance becomes an economic vulnerability,” he noted.

“We cannot afford to leave the majority of our population unprotected.”

Ampem Nyarko also underscored the growing threat of climate change, particularly as Ghana chairs the Vulnerable Twenty (V20) Group, a coalition of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries.

He emphasised the vital role of insurance in strengthening national resilience, supporting disaster recovery, and safeguarding long-term economic stability.

“Insurance must be a tool for climate resilience, a buffer for shocks, and a safeguard for our gains,” he said.

“This is why embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into insurance operations is no longer optional.”

The Deputy Minister further urged the NIC and industry stakeholders to improve enforcement of compulsory insurance laws, such as those for motor vehicles and commercial properties, by leveraging technology and systemic reforms rather than relying solely on punitive measures.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the newly inaugurated Board, Mr Christopher Boadi-Mensah expressed deep gratitude for the confidence reposed in them and pledged the Board’s commitment to transformative leadership.

“We accept this honour with humility and a strong sense of purpose,” he stated.

“We are inspired by the call to make insurance more inclusive and accessible especially to the many Ghanaians in the informal and agricultural sectors who remain unprotected.”

He outlined four core priorities that will guide the Board’s mandate:

• Expanding access to insurance nationwide;

• Deepening market penetration and awareness through education and outreach;

• Fostering innovation and digital transformation to modernize service delivery;

• Ensuring the insurance sector contributes meaningfully to employment, economic growth, and national well-being.

With the President’s “24-Hour Economy” vision gaining momentum, both the Ministry and the NIC Board acknowledged the critical role of a responsive, technology-enabled insurance sector in supporting continuous economic activity.

The inauguration marks a new chapter for Ghana’s insurance landscape, one rooted in collaboration, bold leadership, and a shared commitment to delivering financial security for all.

Accra, May 19, GNA – The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), on Monday, May 19, opened a new branch at Spintex, Accra as part its expansion drive. 

This is to bring social protection services closer to the doorsteps of workers in this brisk  industrial and business zone in times of old age, permanent disability, death, or emigration. 

The Spintex branch marks SSNIT’s 52nd physical presence across the country, with a 53rd branch expected to be commissioned in Adentan in Accra before the end of May. 

Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, Director-General, SSNIT said: “This is a clear testament of our goal to increase accessibility and convenience to the people that we serve.” 

He described Spintex as a vibrant and rapidly growing industrial area, which had turned into a hub of activities with many businesses, showcasing their presence, products and services. 

“It’s a space that no one can decide not to recognise. So, we felt that it was good to situate a branch in this space and serve this community and serve it well,” the Director-General said.  

He disclosed plans of the Trust to championing digital innovations, in addition to the existing USSD, websites and functional app to scale up and provide all-day services in line with the government’s 24-hour economy initiative. 

He indicated that in Ghana, almost everyone used Mobile Money (Momo) for payments, transfer money to others, with a growing tech-savvy population, hence, the need to augment its digital services.  

“As part of our strategy, we are enhancing our digital offerings to ensure that you can work with us, engage us, interact with us, and be safe at any time of the day and we will be opening our first virtual branch in quarter three of this year,” he said. 

“With the virtual branch you dial in, and you have a benefit person to work with, a compliance person and a data person who is prepared to engage you, and a branch manager. So, whatever you want, just dial in and we are available 24 hours to provide that service,” he said. 

Mr. Biney said SSNIT had grown its branches to 52 SSNIT branches, but there were still over 200 districts in the country, so they would leverage partnerships with financial institutions to bridge that gap. 

Mr. Philip Kofi Senyah, Acting General Manager, Operations, SSNIT, also said the new branch would help extend services to the public, including the self-employed in Spintex and its surrounding areas. 

“The Spintex branch represents another significant step in our effort to bring our services closer to you by ensuring greater convenience, improved accessibility and enhance customer experience.” Mr. Senyah said.

The Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) is intensifying efforts to enforce and educate stakeholders on its directive regarding the export of unprocessed rubber.

This follows a successful stakeholder forum held earlier in Tema, in the Greater Accra Region, and is part of a broader initiative to deepen understanding and promote compliance across the rubber value chain.

Anchored in Act 1010 and its accompanying Legislative Instrument (LI 2470), TCDA is renewing its public education efforts on the directive regulating the export of unprocessed rubber.

The Authority has begun regional engagements to clarify compliance requirements and address industry concerns.

At recent forums held in Agona Nkwanta (Western Region) and Assin Fosu (Central Region), TCDA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, engaged farmers, traders, producers, and other value chain actors on the directive issued on May 2, 2025.

The directive mandates that all individuals and entities involved in the rubber, shea, or cashew sectors must obtain a written permit from the Authority before engaging in exports or related commercial activities.

“This is not about banning the industry. No one is shutting down rubber, shea, or cashew businesses. We are here to ensure that the right processes are followed. These directives are grounded in regulations passed by Parliament, and they are designed to promote local processing, create jobs, and ensure long-term sustainability,” Dr Okrah clarified.

Participants at the Agona Nkwanta forum raised concerns about market pricing, planting practices, and the need to involve more youth in rubber farming.

In response, Dr Okrah reaffirmed TCDA’s commitment to supporting stakeholders through capacity building, the provision of quality seedlings, and targeted research to boost productivity.

At the next stop in Assin Fosu, where the majority of participants were rubber farmers, Dr Okrah addressed widespread misconceptions that the Authority was banning rubber operations.

“We are not here in favour of any individual or company. This is a national directive, and our goal is to protect and develop the industry in a way that benefits all Ghanaians,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of expanding rubber cultivation and prioritising value addition.

“Local industries must be fed with raw materials. We must move from exporting raw rubber to processing it locally—and that starts with planting more and adding value right here in Ghana,” he noted.

The events were attended by key stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), the Ghana Police Service, the Agriculture and Natural Resources Advocacy Group (ANRAG), financial institutions, and other partner organisations, signaling strong national support for the initiative.

Dr Okrah concluded by encouraging stakeholders to continue sharing their experiences and insights to shape policies that will secure the future of Ghana’s rubber industry.

“This is a collaborative effort. The future of rubber depends on how well we work together today,” he said.

The forums mark a significant step in TCDA’s broader mission to regulate, support, and grow the six tree crops under its mandate, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous industry.

The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has urged the newly inaugurated National Service Board to urgently address the persistent issue of ghost names on the list of service personnel.

This call was made during the inauguration of an 8-member governing board of the National Service Authority, chaired by Okai Mintah on Monday, May 19.

In his address at the ceremony, the Minister emphasised the need for a comprehensive clean-up of the National Service Scheme to restore public confidence in its operations.

“I challenge you as an incoming board to focus on constructing a systematic overhaul with technology at the forefront. You must address the vulnerability in the current system that allowed corruption to take root. This requires a complete overhaul, leveraging technology to create a more secure and transparent platform.

“Create a robust auditing system to eliminate all these ghost names. President Mahama does not want to hear again that we still have ghost names in the system,” he stressed.

Nations FC moved to the summit of the Ghana Premier League table with an emphatic 4–1 victory over Legon Cities, who were consigned to relegation after a dismal defensive display at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Kelvin Ampoful scored twice for the visitors, who were ruthless in attack and capitalised on a series of costly errors from the home side.

Ampoful opened the scoring midway through the first half, pouncing on a loose ball to slot home from close range.

But Nations FC were pegged back just before the break when Rabin Ousmane Sanon inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, bringing Legon Cities level.

GPRTU promises transport fares reduction

The Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, has asked commuters to expect some price reductions soon.

According to him, the GPRTU is currently holding discussions with the Ministry of Transport regarding transport fares.

He noted that the negotiations are nearing conclusion, with a final meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

“It was a marathon meeting. The Transport Ministry is proposing a certain percentage, and the transport operators are also proposing their own. Eventually, we met halfway. We’re going back, and tomorrow we’ll meet again to finalize the decision,” he was quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.

In light of the recent appreciation of the cedi and the continued decline in fuel prices, consumers of public transport have called for a reduction in fares.

“The meeting is about reducing fares, so the public should rest assured, we’ll give them a smile-worthy reduction,” Imoro assured.

Accra, May 19, GNA – Dr Maame Boatemaa Amissah-Arthur, Consultant Rheumatologist, Nuffield Clinic says early diagnosis of Lupus disease is key in managing its treatment and calls on the public to seek early medical attention.  

She said considering the complexity of the disease, the importance of early diagnosis and benefits of personalized treatment plans could not be underestimated.  

Speaking at the commemoration of the Lupus Awareness Day held on May 10 by Nuffield Clinic, she said while lupus was a lifelong condition, it could be effectively managed with the right support systems in place. 

Health experts have said that Lupus symptoms can vary greatly and can affect many parts of the body. Some common symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, fever, skin rashes (including the “butterfly rash) and hair loss.  

Lupus awareness is championed globally and the whole of May is Lupus Awareness Month. The Nuffield Clinic observed the Day with a multidisciplinary educational event themed: “Empowering Health, Inspiring Hope.”  

The programme brought together patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals to raise awareness about lupus and provide practical tools for managing the condition holistically. 

Miss Priscilla Kushigbeor, a clinical psychologist, speaking on the mental and psychological challenges of living with a chronic illness, encouraged patients to seek mental health support, adopt mindfulness techniques, lean on support networks to build resilience and improve their emotional well-being. 

Miss Serwaa Esumaba, a certified nutritionist, shared practical dietary strategies with a focused on reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system.  

She guided attendees on balanced eating habits and educated them about common food triggers that could worsen lupus symptoms. 

Miss Elizabeth Sarpong, a physiotherapist, demonstrated how safe and consistent physical activity could help improve joint function, reduce fatigue and support overall well-being in Lupus patients. 

The event ended with an interactive session where patients asked questions, shared their experiences and received advice from the expert panel. 

Many attendees expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it clarified their misconceptions, gave hope and reinforced the value of holistic care. 

The event reflects Nuffield Clinic’s commitment to delivering excellent and specialist care rooted in education and empowerment. By observing World Lupus Day, the Clinic stood in solidarity with the global lupus community, reminding all that with knowledge, support and compassion, life with Lupus could still be full and meaningful.

An economist professor at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has called on the Bank of Ghana to clearly communicate its exchange rate targets to avoid uncertainties that could negatively affect the market in the long run.

According to him, the strategies being used to manage the cedi must be transparent and properly communicated.

“I believe the central bank has a certain exchange rate level in mind that they want to achieve and stabilize at, but this hasn’t been communicated. It leaves the market guessing, and that causes uncertainty,” he was quoted as saying by myjoyonline.com.

Professor Bokpin added that the Central Bank’s current strategy, which targets inflation by manipulating the exchange rate, is unsustainable.

“Inflation is basically aggregate demand exceeding aggregate supply. If supply is constrained and you only focus on exchange rate-driven disinflation, it’s not sustainable. Whenever the cedi strengthens, the issue is always about sustainability. The ups and downs are not good for the market. They are not good for planning,” he said.

The economist also noted that short-term appreciation may harm the local economy in the long run.

Instead of focusing on short-term gains, he said, “We should rather build our reserves. That allows for predictability and stability, which would be more helpful.”

“What the market is looking for is stability, stability that allows businesses to plan, investors to make decisions, and producers to expand. What you need are supply-oriented policies. Supply-oriented policies will not coexist with what we are doing right now,” he intimated.

Professor Bokpin concluded with a warning, “If we continue this way, we’ll strengthen the cedi, make imports cheaper, and kill our local industry. We’ll lose jobs and undermine long-term economic resilience.”

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that Ghana has resolved the longstanding disarray in its gold purchasing sector, with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) now holding exclusive authority over all trade involving gold from the small-scale mining sector.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly constituted Governing Board of GoldBod in Accra on Monday, May 19, Dr. Forson explained that previous fragmentation and lack of coordination in the sector had facilitated widespread gold smuggling and caused significant foreign exchange losses for the country.

“I am happy to announce that the erstwhile chaos in Ghana’s gold purchasing sector that prevented the nation from fully benefiting from its gold resources has come to an end.”

He detailed how, in the past, several entities—including the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), private aggregators, and licensed exporters—were all involved in various gold-purchasing schemes such as “gold for forex,” “gold for reserves,” “gold for oil,” and “gold for cash.”

This, he said, resulted in a fragmented and poorly regulated sector with overlapping mandates.

“Despite its primary mandate to optimize mineral investment, MIIF also ventured into gold buying, incurring substantial financial losses,” Dr. Forson noted.

He affirmed that under the new structure, GoldBod has been given the exclusive role of managing official gold trading.

“The Ghana GoldBod is now the sole buyer and assayer of gold, with exclusive mandate to grant licenses to engage in the trade of gold from Ghana’s small-scale mining sector,” he stated.

Dr. Forson commended GoldBod’s early efforts and highlighted its contribution to economic stability.

“Distinguished members of the Board, I am pleased to observe that the GoldBod has already began to fulfil its object and has contributed immensely to the recent stability of the Ghana Cedi through gold reserve accumulation,” he remarked.

The restructuring is expected to not only streamline gold trading operations but also ensure Ghana maximises revenue from one of its most valuable natural resources.

Accra, May 19, GNA –Empower360, an intervention of the Ghana Grow Programme, has supported 32 young women and persons with disabilities with fully stocked starter packs to kickstart their careers in creative entrepreneurship.  

These carefully curated kits, designed for makeup artistry, resin crafts, or soap production, symbolized more than tools. 

The initiative of the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with the Springboard Road Show Foundation targeted young people aged 15 to 35 and combines practical trade skills with deep personal and business development training to prepare participants to thrive in the real world. 

Mrs Comfort Ocran, the Executive Director, the Springboard Road Show Foundation, said there was real investment in the future of participants who had undergone an intensive five-day training programme.  

She said the programme, in its second phase, had each day packed with hands-on sessions guided by expert trainers and seasoned industry professionals. 

She said they had business development modules delivered by Corporate Secretarial and Training Services (CSTS), which covered the essentials like entrepreneurship, business structure, sustainability, record-keeping, and customer service. 

Mrs Ocran said the Ghana Psychological Association (GPA) led sessions on mental health, stress management, and emotional resilience, ensuring a well-rounded support system for all participants. 

Mr Albert Ocran, the Technical Director of Springboard Road Show Foundation, had an interactive mentorship session with the participants, where he shared real-life wisdom on workplace safety, team building, and the value of ethical leadership. 

He said, “What we are doing here is not just about teaching skills; it is about igniting hope and confidence in these remarkable young people.”  

“When you give someone the right tools, the right mindset, and the right support, you’re not just helping them build a business, you are helping them to live sustainable lives,” he added. 

He said Ghana Grows continued to build Ghana’s future by connecting participants with mentors, Youth-Led Organizations (YLOs), and long-term support systems. 

“With their starter packs in hand and confidence in their skills, these 32 participants are now equipped not just to start earning, but to build sustainable livelihoods that could impact generations,” he said. 

Miss Haggai Sackey, the youngest participant, who received a starter pack in soap making said “This training changed my life. I came here unsure of myself, but I’m leaving with skills, confidence, and a clear plan. With the kits I’ve received, I can start my own small business from home and eventually train others in my community.”

Dr Daniel Armateye Anim is a business strategist and financial analyst

Business strategist and financial analyst Dr Daniel Armateye Anim has projected that the cedi may continue to appreciate against the US dollar into the third quarter of 2025.

According to him, the cedi’s current strength can largely be attributed to the ongoing global trade war, which has impacted economic flows, particularly in ways that have benefited Ghana.

In an interview with GhanaWeb Business, Dr Anim emphasised the significant impact the cedi’s performance could have on the broader economy.

He explained that the appreciation should not be misinterpreted as a sign of long-term strength. Instead, he urged the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance to take advantage of the current situation to boost foreign exchange reserves and attract more capital inflows.

“It is possible that the cedi may further appreciate into the third quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. This is mainly due to the ongoing global trade war, but it is a short-term mechanism that should be well understood by the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance. We need to leverage this to consolidate the gains by strengthening our reserves at the Bank of Ghana and ensuring we attract more inflows,” he said.

Dr Anim further warned that the cedi may begin to depreciate in the fourth quarter of 2025, citing several factors, including the resumption of debt repayments in 2026, which could put significant pressure on the central bank’s reserves.

“The fourth quarter is a peak season for traders and businesses to import more goods into the economy. As a result, there will be increased demand for the dollar, which will likely affect the Bank of Ghana’s reserves and, in turn, impact the value of the cedi,” he added.
