Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, expressed his joy upon seeing the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Ghana signs $2billion oil licence extension deal with Tullow, Kosmos, PetroSA & GNPC

0

Ghana has taken a major step towards reinforcing its position as a leading oil and gas producer in West Africa, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government and key energy partners to extend the production licences for the Jubilee and TEN oil fields to 2040.

The agreement, announced in a statement issued June 4, 2025, brings together Tullow Oil plc, Kosmos Energy, PetroSA, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and Explorco, and will see the West Cape Three Points (WCTP) and Deep Water Tano (DWT) licences—home to the Jubilee and TEN fields—extended by 15 years.

Under the terms of the MoU, the partners have committed to drilling up to 20 additional wells in the Jubilee field, with investments totalling up to $2 billion over the life of the licences. The partners expect a material increase in gross 2P (proven and probable) reserves, while new measures will also aim to boost gas supply and reduce costs to consumers.

Speaking after the signing, Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, hailed the agreement as a turning point for the country’s energy future.

“This Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Ghana and the DWT and WCTP partners marks a significant step forward in our nation’s energy sector. Extending the licenses to 2040 demonstrates our commitment to fostering a stable and attractive investment climate,” he said.

“This MOU will not only ensure the continued production of oil, supporting our economic growth, but also allow us to further develop our infrastructure and create more job opportunities for our citizens. We are dedicated to responsible resource management and look forward to a prosperous future fuelled by sustainable energy practices,” the Minister added.

The MoU outlines key principles to support the long-term development of the Jubilee and TEN fields. These include an increase in gas supply to approximately 130 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d), a reduced gas price for Jubilee-associated gas, and the introduction of a guaranteed reimbursement mechanism for gas sales. Capacity-building for GNPC and the Petroleum Commission is also a priority, with a particular focus on the use of advanced technology.

Tullow Oil’s Interim Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, Richard Miller, described the deal as a “valuable step forward” that underscores the “collaborative and constructive relationship” between the government and joint venture partners. “This extension and the fiscal stability of our contracts emphasizes the opportunity Ghana represents to deliver additional value through production and reserves additions,” he said.

Kosmos Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Andrew G. Inglis, welcomed the MoU as a signal of renewed confidence in Ghana’s investment climate. “This memorandum of understanding recognises the importance of oil and gas in Ghana and the desire of the new administration to create an attractive environment for new investment in the sector. Extending the Ghana production licenses is highly accretive, adding material reserves and enabling the partnership to continue investing in the country for the long-term,” he noted.

“This investment is expected to maximise the value of the fields for the benefit of the country’s economic development and Kosmos’ shareholders. We look forward to working with President Mahama and his government to invest in and advance Ghana’s energy sector,” Inglis added.

The MoU maintains all existing terms of the current WCTP and DWT petroleum agreements. Next steps include submitting a Jubilee Plan of Development addendum, finalising gas sales agreements, and seeking parliamentary approval for the payment security mechanism and licence extensions by the end of the third quarter of 2025.

GNAT opposes inclusion of private schools in free SHS Programme

0

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has raised objections to the government’s decision to extend the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy to include private schools.

Government says the initiative is aimed at expanding access to secondary education and easing overcrowding in public SHSs.

Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, announced the move on May 27 while unveiling revised school selection guidelines for candidates preparing to sit the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

He explained that the inclusion of private schools in the Free SHS programme forms part of a broader plan to expand capacity and phase out the double-track system.

“As part of our campaign promise, we’ve worked diligently to bring private senior high schools on board. Meetings and engagements have been held, and we are confident that with the commitment from both sides, private schools will deliver,” he said. “This step will also help us eliminate the double-track system.”

But GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, has pushed back against the policy shift, cautioning that it may worsen the already strained resources in the public sector.

“We don’t want the situation where tomorrow the government will come and tell us that there are no resources to teach in the public schools, and so we are adding on to those that parents have to pay. Already we have been calling for parents who can pay fees to pay, or should be made to make some contributions.

“We have not yet been able to get all these things done. So, to be adding on to the already existing burden will be serious, and I have some difficulty with it,” he stated.

Like by now, we’re paying Pope levy, Trump Levy and China Levy – Criss Waddle Shades Akufo-Addo

0

Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle has stirred up conversation on social media after throwing subtle jabs at the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, suggesting that if they were still in power, they would have used current global happenings as excuses to introduce even more taxes.

In a humorous post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the AMG Business boss used satire and sarcasm to express his frustration with the way the previous government imposed taxes.

NAPO confirms NIB interrogation over tenure as Education Minister

0

Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has confirmed that he was invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in relation to his time as Minister of Education under the erstwhile Nana Akufo-Addo administration.

According to the former cabinet minister and 2024 Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he has already honoured the invitation and provided the requested information to the state’s investigative agency.

Speaking in an interview with 1957 News, which has since circulated widely on social media, Dr Opoku-Prempeh explained that he submitted himself willingly to the investigation as a responsible citizen and former public official. “As for accountability, nobody can escape it,” he stated.

“People don’t know that I’ve been invited by the NIB to assist in investigations into some issues during my time at the Ministry of Education. I couldn’t have declined that invitation.”

He added that he had appeared before the Bureau on two occasions, and despite not recalling every detail from his time in office, he cooperated fully with investigators. “I’ve forgotten some of the issues; I can’t remember everything that happened while I was in office. That is why we have technocrats and others who assist in running the ministry and keep records. For the issues I clearly remember, I spoke to them during the invitation,” he explained.

Dr Opoku-Prempeh underscored the importance of transparency and humility in public service, advising current political leaders to act with integrity while in office. “I always say that those of us in politics should know that no condition is permanent. Today, you can be in power; the next day, you could be in opposition. So politicians in power should always be mindful of what they do with the authority entrusted to them, so that if they are asked to account for their stewardship tomorrow, they can easily do so.”

The former education minister, who contested as running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the last general election, said he spent an entire day at the NIB and might be called again for further engagements. “I have spent my whole day today at the NIB, and I may go there again tomorrow,” he said.

Dr Opoku-Prempeh’s comments come at a time when the NIB is reportedly intensifying investigations into activities of key officials from the previous administration. Other prominent individuals, including Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi and former National Service Authority Deputy Director of Operations Kwaku Ohene Gyan, have also been invited for questioning.

The NIB has not released a formal statement on the ongoing investigations, but sources indicate that the probes focus on administrative decisions and expenditures during the tenure of former government appointees.

‘I’m back to thank you just like the man with leprosy in the Bible’

Chairman Wontumi [L] and Bryan Acheampong Chairman Wontumi [L] and Bryan Acheampong

The embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Wontumi has with a thankful heart expressed gratitude to the former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong for facilitating his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Chairman Wontumi was released by EOCO on Monday, June 2, 2025 after being arrested on May 27spending close to a week in custody under investigation for serious allegations including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Wontumi was granted a GH¢50 million bail with two sureties. However, he stayed in custody for six days as his bail conditions could not be met.

It took the intervention of Bryan Acheampong a wealthy businessman and Member of Parliament for Abetifi to secure Wontumi’s release after the former presented the necessary documents to meet the GH¢50 million bail requirement.

Speaking to journalists, the former minister emphasised solidarity and party unity as the driving force behind his action.

“It serves us no good. What is important is that one of us was in trouble. He was arrested, and we needed, as part of the legal process, to provide surety for bail, which has been done. He has been released, and now we wait for the next steps,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi in a video shared on social media platform X, on Tuesday June 3, returned to his benefactor to thank him for his kindness.

Referencing the men with leprosy in the Bible who were cured by Jesus but did not return to thank Him, Wontumi said he cannot be ungrateful after Bryan Acheampong has secured his release.

“Showing gratitude is very important in life, even Jesus acknowledges that. Jesus cured 10 persons with leprosy and after they were healed, only one returned to thank Him and He asked about the whereabouts of the rest. I can’t stay away without coming to show gratitude to you, even though you are my friend. I could have decided to call you on phone, but If I had not come to thank you, it wouldn’t have shown that I cherish what you’ve done for me and it would also amount to disrespecting you. When it gets to the time that I should relate to you as a brother, we’ll do things that brothers do. I have come here to say a very big thank you and also thank all party supporters for their show of love during the past few difficult days.”

We support your 24 hour economy policy

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President of the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), Davis Korboe, has expressed FAGE’s full support for the 24-hour economy policy.

He affirmed the federation’s readiness to collaborate with government agencies and private sector institutions to develop interventions that would maximize benefits for the horticultural sector.

Speaking at an interaction with President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House, Korboe emphasized the need for practical implementation of policies that will enhance trade and economic growth.

He highlighted FAGE’s historical role in shaping Ghana’s export landscape, noting that the association previously had representation on the boards of the Export Development and Agriculture Investment Fund (EDIF)which later transitioned into Exim Bank as well as the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA).

He called for the reinstatement of FAGE’s representation on these boards, citing the federation’s three decades of experience in supporting the private sector.

“Africa represents the single greatest opportunity for expanding agricultural exports, with a market of 1.7 billion people and a combined GDP of 3.4 trillion dollars. However, we must move beyond celebratory rhetoric to practical implementation.”

He urged the government to accelerate efforts in eliminating non-tariff barriers, such as frustrating customs procedures at border points and harmonizing standards, which often hinder trade.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for strategic investments in logistics infrastructure, including intra-Africa highways, reliable shipping lines, and seamless payment systems, to facilitate intra-African trade.

Korboe acknowledged the Bank of Ghana’s work on digital payments infrastructure (DPI) projects, aimed at enabling seamless transactions across Africa.

He called on President Mahama to provide additional support to ensure the success of these initiatives.

Speedy Recovery Bro; This Is Why Ofori Atta Doesn’t Want to Come- Cudjoe On Wontumi’s Sick Looks

0

Political commentator and founding President of IMANI Center for Policy and Education Think Tank Franklin Cudjoe has waded into the recent release of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, with a poignant and politically charged comments.

In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, Franklin Cudjoe expressed disappointment over the unfolding developments, describing them as truly sad. He added that such treatment is the reason why former Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta has ran into hiding and doesn’t want to appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor and instead offer testimony via zoom from an undisclosed location.

“This is truly sad. I understand why my man, the former finance minister, has chosen to stay in hiding away from the Special Prosecutor and requesting to testify in court through Zoom. Speedy recovery, my friends, but please just account for the many grave ills you have been accused of during your tenure in office. My dear brothers and sisters, let’s continue to remember them in our prayers.” He wrote.

While expressing sympathy for those allegedly involved, he concluded on a solemn and spiritual note, urging the public to remember them in prayers.

The vociferous Ghanaian politician and businessman, Chairman Wontumi, was spotted for the first time since his reported release from EOCO custody looking sick and dizzy, sending social media into a frenzy.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), known for his loud charisma and unfiltered political jabs, was seen stepping out of the EOCO premises looking visibly calm but slightly tired.

Dressed in a simple red-shirt and accompanied by a few loyal aides, Wontumi waved to a small crowd of supporters who had gathered quietly outside to show solidarity.

While the circumstances surrounding his recent invitation by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) remain vague, sources close to the matter hint it was linked to an ongoing investigation into some business dealings involving his mining interests.

Franklin Cudjoe’s comment seek to send solidarity to the detained chairman, since he has already condemned the EOCO for keeping Chairman Wontumi for more than 48hours.

ORAL Team report: AG preparing 33 corruption cases against former appointees

0

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice is currently building 33 cases of corruption and related offences against former government appointees.

These cases stem from investigations conducted by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Team, an anti-corruption task force established by President Mahama after his 2024 election victory. The team was tasked with gathering information on suspected corruption, particularly under the previous administration, and forwarding it to the appropriate state institutions for action.

The five-member team, chaired by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, includes former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, retired Police Commissioner Nathaniel Kofi Boakye, legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, and investigative journalist Raymond Archer — all renowned for their integrity and strong stance against corruption.

After completing its work, the ORAL Team submitted its findings to the Office of the Attorney-General for further investigation and potential prosecution.

Speaking during a meeting with the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, President Mahama said court proceedings on the 33 cases would soon begin.

“We set up the ORAL Committee, and they have identified 33 cases, which were handed over to the Attorney General. We have created special investigative teams to investigate each of them.

“Some of them have found a lot of evidence of the procurement of properties with illicit wealth. With many of them, they are just at the point of beginning prosecution. Some have also started the prosecution, and others are being lined up,” he stated.

Current Prices of Cement In Ghana Revealed (June 2025)

0

There is some relief for Ghanaians this June as cement prices have started to drop. After several months of high prices, the cost of cement is finally coming down, following the improvement in the cedi’s exchange rate against the US dollar.

As of Tuesday 3rd June, 2025, a bag of cement is now being sold between GHS 110 and GHS 115 in many areas. In a few shops, the price is still around GHS 120, but this is still better compared to the earlier range of GHS 120 to GHS 130. However, there are some shops who still sell them at 130 cedis.

This change comes as good news to people in the construction business and individuals planning to build. For months, there had been pressure on suppliers to reduce the price of cement, especially after the cedi started gaining strength. The current exchange rate now stands at GHS 10.2 to the dollar, down from the previous high of GHS 16.

Cement sellers say the price drop is because they have started selling new stock, which was bought at the new, lower exchange rate. Previously, they were selling older stock purchased when the dollar rate was high, making it difficult to reduce prices.

While the prices have not dropped drastically everywhere, many believe it’s a step in the right direction. Ghanaians are hopeful that the cost of cement will continue to fall in the coming weeks if the cedi remains stable.

For now, the current cement price for June 2025 is between GHS 110 and GHS 130, giving some hope and relief to builders across the country.

Ernest Addison’s home raid was lawful and warranted — Interior Minister

0

Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has defended the controversial raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, describing it as a lawful operation carried out under a valid court warrant.

On the morning of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, about 20 armed men, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, stormed Dr. Addison’s residence at Roman Ridge in Accra.

The operatives—some masked and wielding AK-47 rifles—reportedly disabled the home’s CCTV system and demanded access to alleged “vaults.” Dr. Addison denied the existence of any vaults or large sums of cash in his residence. Nonetheless, the team is said to have ransacked the property, leaving with the CCTV monitor and control unit.

No vaults or significant amounts of cash were discovered during the operation. The incident has been widely criticised by elements within the opposition, with a former central bank official calling the episode “unprecedented and disturbing.”

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the Interior Minister—who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Asawase—insisted the operation followed due legal procedure.

“Mr Speaker, prior to the operation, an ex parte search warrant was duly filed before the High Court in Accra on March 12, 2025, and was obtained in accordance with established legal procedures. The search was carried out in strict adherence to due process and in full compliance with the laws of the state. It was meticulously conducted in the presence of the former governor,” Muntaka stated.

Among the many wardrobe options available to women, the blue corporate gown has emerged as a popular and sophisticated choice for ladies aiming to combine elegance with professionalism.

Blue, often associated with trust, confidence, and calmness, is an ideal color for corporate attire. It conveys a sense of reliability and authority without appearing overly aggressive, making it perfect for business environments. Review pricing, lending metrics and publish blacklisted loan defaulters – BoG directs banks

0

The Bank of Ghana has intensified regulatory scrutiny of the banking sector with a new set of directives aimed at promoting ethical pricing, curbing non-performing loans and protecting consumers.

Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama calls on commercial banks to urgently review their pricing models, eliminate exploitative lending practices and ensure full transparency in customer charges.

Speaking during a post-MPC engagement with bank CEOs in Accra, he condemned the practice of applying interest on dormant credit accounts, describing it as “unacceptable and unethical.”

“Such practices distort customer outcomes, misrepresent the true health of lending portfolios, and violate principles of fair treatment,” Dr. Asiama stated.

“We expect all banks to uphold pricing standards that are both commercially defensible and ethically sound.”

Addressing the rising concerns around digital lending, Dr. Asiama disclosed that the BoG is finalising comprehensive digital lending guidelines, expected by August 2025.

These will apply to both banks and non-bank lenders, introducing enforceable rules around licensing, interest disclosure, data privacy and ethical collection practices.

The Governor warned of growing abuse by unregulated online lenders, including cases of harassment and scams targeting vulnerable borrowers.

“Today, too many Ghanaians, especially young people and informal workers, are being lured by online lending platforms that make bold promises, only to turn around and trap them in cycles of hidden fees, harassment, or worse. We’ve received reports of individuals being threatened, shamed, or scammed, all under the guise of accessing quick loans. We cannot allow this to continue.”

“If your institution is active in digital lending, now is the time to prepare for compliance,” he warned, urging banks and their fintech partners to align with the upcoming regulations.

To restore lending discipline and improve credit risk management, the Governor also announced that commercial banks will be required to publicly disclose the names of willful defaulters in their audited annual financial statements.

These disclosures will include a sectoral breakdown of non-performing loans (NPLs) and be shared with key financial sector oversight bodies.

As part of broader asset quality reforms, the Central Bank has also directed that banks cap their NPL ratios at 10% of gross loans by December 2026.

Furthermore, restructuring rules are to be tightened, with loans only eligible for reclassification after sustained repayments.

Banks must now submit monthly NPL reports and publicly disclose key asset quality metrics.

“These actions form part of our long-term agenda to promote responsible lending, rebuild confidence, and safeguard the financial system,” Dr. Asiama said.

These latest interventions signal a broader commitment to restoring discipline and transparency in Ghana’s financial sector, while supporting sustainable access to credit and consumer protection in the evolving digital economy.

‘I am under investigation by NIB’

Former Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh Former Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh

Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, a former Minister of Education, has disclosed that he visited the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to respond to inquiries regarding his tenure in the previous administration.

According to Dr Opoku-Prempeh, who also served as the Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, he quietly honored the invitation and provided all the information requested by the state’s investigative body.

In an interview with 1957 News, which was shared on social media, Dr Opoku-Prempeh stated that, as a law-abiding citizen who once held high public office, he could not decline the NIB’s invitation—especially as he has a clear conscience.

“As for accountability, nobody can escape it. People don’t know that I’ve been invited by the NIB to assist in investigations into some issues during my time at the Ministry of Education. I couldn’t have declined that invitation. In fact, I have been to the NIB twice. I’ve forgotten some of the issues; I can’t remember everything that happened while I was in office. That is why we have technocrats and others who assist in running the ministry and keep records. For the issues I clearly remember, I spoke to them during the invitation.

I have spent my whole day today at the NIB, and I may go there again tomorrow.”

The National Intelligence Bureau has commenced a series of investigations into some officials of the former Nana Akufo-Addo administration, including Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi and Kwaku Ohene Gyan, former Deputy Director of Operations at the National Service Authority.

Align central govt and DACF projects to avoid waste – Adjei-Mensah Korsah to Gov’t

0

Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has raised concerns over possible duplication between central government initiatives and district assembly interventions, following new directives on the use of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

His comments come after the government announced that each district assembly will receive a minimum of GH₵25 million in 2025 to support local development under the DACF.

According to Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the funds will be allocated based on specific spending guidelines. These include 25% for designing and constructing a model market, 10% for building health facilities—including at least two CHPS compounds in rural districts—and another 10% for educational infrastructure.

Other allocations include 10% for potable water projects, 10% for school furniture, and 5% for administrative expenses of the assemblies. Additionally, 20% of the funds are earmarked for completing existing projects under the Middle Belt, Coastal, and Northern Development Authorities.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, June 3, the Techiman South MP called for improved coordination between the central government and district assemblies to avoid overlapping responsibilities in executing development projects.

“You need to ensure that there is not a clash between the central government, what they do and what the assemblies are going to do. Because I see there is an effort to want to provide everything from classroom blocks to water to school furniture and so on. The central government also, through its own programmes, has some activities to do, so we need to marry the two so that we don’t duplicate efforts.

“If we are not careful, the Ministry of Education, through GETFund, is allocating projects and then the same things are also being budgeted under DACF. How do we regulate and ensure that there is no duplication in these efforts?” he questioned.

BoG Governor targets single-digit lending rate in four years

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has set an ambitious target to lower lending rates to 10% or less within the next four years.

This he says is to stimulate private sector investment and accelerate economic growth.

Currently, lending rates in Ghana average around 27.4%, making access to affordable credit a significant hurdle for businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.

But speaking at the AGI Corporate Forum in Accra, Dr. Asiama stressed the urgency of structural reforms to tackle this issue.

“My vision is to see lending rates in this country fall to less than 10 percent before the end of my four-year term. It is doable; why do we think it is not?” the Governor asserted.

Dr. Asiama said BoG is engaging directly with commercial banks to align on reform measures that will bring down rates sustainably.

He called for more industry-led self-regulation and cooperation to advance these efforts.

“I want to see more self-regulation. As heads of banks, you know what’s best for the industry. Why wait for me to come after you? I expect you to collaborate and bring proposals forward. I will simply play the role of referee,” he said.

The Governor also expressed the Central Bank’s commitment to creating an enabling macroeconomic environment, citing improved inflation trends and a more stable cedi as key building blocks for this vision.

“I believe that when businesses succeed, society succeeds. What you provide is more than a public good. In every way we can, we will work together,” he told industry leaders.

President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, welcomed the pledge but urged the BoG to ensure that the recent macroeconomic gains are translated into real, measurable relief for industry.

“We are meeting at a time when our economy is showing signs of resilience and recovery. Declining inflation, a stabilized exchange rate, and renewed economic confidence give us cautious optimism. But these gains must be consolidated into tangible benefits for businesses,” Dr. Ayim-Darke said.

The target by the Central Bank, if achieved, will be welcoming news in Ghana’s credit environment, potentially unlocking new capital flows, improving business competitiveness and strengthening the country’s growth trajectory.

Environmental Protection Authority readies to ban plastic in Ghana

0

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced plans to implement a comprehensive waste management and recycling plan later this month.

This is aimed at reducing nondegradable waste, especially plastic, by promoting recycling and subsequently banning the product in Ghana.

The Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Professor Nana Ama Klutse, announced this at separate engagements with students and teachers of the Wovenu and Dzodze Penyi Senior High Schools in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region.

“After the 5th of June [World Environmental Day] there will be a lot of activities on plastics. We want to reduce plastic waste in the country because they harm the environment”, she said.

She explained that her outfit would first introduce a waste segregation policy aiming to educate Ghanaians on the need to separate waste for easy disposal and recycling.

She added that the initiative would create jobs as the youth who would have the opportunity to collect plastic waste and sell to the recycling factories to earn some money, while hands would also be employed to work at the factories.

Prof Klutse said this is gradually targeted at phasing out plastics in the system and then enforcing a ban to prevent factories from producing plastics.

“We want to avoid plastic waste as much as possible. We are trying to ban plastics in Ghana, we want to do it slowly.

“We want to collect what is in the system and then we want to get an alternative to this plastic, then we can reduce the waste as much as possible. Surely, we can do away with plastics products, especially the single-use plastics”, she said.

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana also shared in the vision explaining that he would also make available receptacles at vantage points for plastic collection.

He said the plastic waste would be sold to a company in Accra to be used in producing school desks, roofing sheets among others.

He proposed a partnership with the Wovenu Senior High School to cultivate about 15 acres of mango and coconut as part of the School Farm Project. This forms part of his afforestation project to sustain the environment.

Mr. Agbagba said his office would make available seedlings to be planted across the second cycle schools, urging the students to adopt a tree each and nurture it.

“We are bringing seedlings and as a student, you must ensure that you have at least one, you plant and water it every morning. You must check on it, you can give it a name and ensure that the tree grows”, he said.

There was symbolic tree planting by Mr. Agbana and Prof Klutse ahead of the World Environmental Day celebration on 5th June 2025.

Kotoko complete first transfer for next season after signing Chelsea midfielder

0

Asante Kotoko have completed their first signing for next season after securing the services of 20-year-old midfielder Hubert Gyau from Berekum Chelsea.

According to journalist Shaban Mohammed, the deal was finalized after Gyau successfully passed his medical earlier this week.

The promising young talent has put pen to paper on a four-year contract that will keep him at the Kumasi-based club until June 2029.

This acquisition marks a significant step in Kotoko’s squad rebuilding efforts as they prepare for the upcoming 2025/26 season. The midfield addition is expected to inject youthful energy and creativity into the Porcupine Warriors’ setup.

Hubert Gyau’s transfer is seen as a statement of intent from the club’s management as they look to strengthen and reposition themselves as title contenders once again.

Mahama appointees would provide Jesus, Angel Michael for bail if I head EOCO

Private legal practitioner and radio show host, Maurice Ampaw Private legal practitioner and radio show host, Maurice Ampaw

Private legal practitioner and radio show host, Maurice Ampaw, has shared how ruthless he would be with officials of the incumbent Mahama government should there be a change of power and he is appointed Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The outspoken lawyer, commenting on the GH₵50 million bail condition set for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, stated that he would impose even tougher bail conditions on officials from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under investigation.

According to him, he would go as far as demanding Jesus Christ and Angel Michael as part of the sureties before such officials would be released from EOCO custody.

“The way chiefs in this country have remained quiet amid political persecution and harassment, they should continue to stay silent. If power changes and I am appointed to head EOCO, and an NDC official is being investigated for corruption, I will impose bail conditions far more difficult than the GH₵50 million set for Chairman Wontumi.

As part of the sureties to be justified for the bail, I will ask the NDC official to present Jesus Christ and Angel Michael. So the NDC should continue harassing their political opponents. This is their time, so they should enjoy it. The tables will soon turn,” he declared.

Last week, the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressed disappointment after efforts to meet the GH₵50 million bail condition for Chairman Wontumi proved unsuccessful.

Dr. Bawumia criticized the bail terms, stating:

“I must put on record that the bail conditions set for Chairman Wontumi — GH₵50 million — are very onerous. I don’t know how many people in Ghana own property worth that amount. It appears designed to delay his release.”

Hospitality sector must define clear customer experience standards – Prof. Ebo Hinson

0

Ghana’s hospitality and tourism sector must urgently adopt clear and enforceable customer experience standards to raise service quality and competitiveness across the industry.

This is the view of Professor Ebo Hinson, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Ghana Communication Technology University, who spoke during a Citi Business Festival discussion on “Tourism and Customer Experience” hosted on X Spaces.

Professor Hinson expressed concern over the industry’s persistent neglect of customer feedback, describing it as a systemic weakness that risks eroding trust and undermining growth potential.

“We need to develop customer experience standards for all operators in Ghana’s hospitality and tourism space,” he noted.

“That’s something we attempted 12 years ago with the Ghana Hotels Association, but the momentum wasn’t sustained.”

Drawing comparisons with South Africa, he commended their structured hotel grading system that not only aligns with global benchmarks but also integrates local expectations particularly customer experience which is a critical metric for hotel quality.

Prof. Hinson also highlighted the growing importance of technology in shaping modern tourism experiences and called for a revamp of hospitality training to reflect current digital trends.

“These days, everything is very tech-driven. From chatbots to the metaverse, virtual and augmented reality, we need a significant boost in the digital components of hospitality training from senior high school through to the university level,” he said.

As part of the Citi Business Festival’s ongoing focus on sectoral value addition, Prof. Hinson’s remarks reinforced the need for a customer-centric, digitally empowered hospitality strategy to unlock Ghana’s tourism potential and boost investor confidence.

Chairman Wontumi visited Dr. Bawumia after his release to thank the former Vice President for his support during his arrest.

In a video of the visit shared on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Chairman Wontumi is seen exchanging pleasantries with several senior party members who were present and thanking them for their overwhelming support.

After shaking hands with the visibly happy former Vice President and taking photos, Dr. Bawumia looked at Wontumi and said, “Yesterday, I slept,” expressing how relieved and excited he was about Wontumi’s release.

Wontumi, who refers to himself as the “Governor of Ashanti,” was arrested on May 27, 2025, by EOCO over allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

On Friday, May 30, Dr. Bawumia expressed disappointment that the NPP leadership had been unable to meet the detained Chairman Wontumi.

Dr. Bawumia and the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had secured permission to visit Chairman Wontumi while he was held at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters. However, due to the large crowd of NPP supporters gathered there and the associated security concerns, they were not granted access.

Wontumi was released on Monday, June 2, 2025, after meeting his bail conditions of GH₵50 million with two sureties.

Following his release, Wontumi also visited the NPP headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, June 3, where he was warmly received by party executives and supporters.

Dreams FC and Medeama make CAF Club Rankings; Kotoko, Hearts of Oak miss out

0

Only two Ghanaian clubs, Dreams FC and Medeama SC, appear in the latest CAF Club Rankings as of June 2025. Dreams are ranked 26th with 12 points, while Medeama occupy the 51st position with 4 points.

Their inclusion comes on the back of impressive outings in recent CAF interclub competitions. Notably, Dreams FC reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in their debut season, making a strong statement on the continental stage.

However, Ghana’s traditional powerhouses, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, are conspicuously missing from the top 57.

Despite their historic pedigree, Kotoko, being two-time Champions League winners and Hearts of Oak, having won both the Champions League and Confederation Cup, neither side has reached the group stages of any CAF competition in the past five years, highlighting their sharp decline on the continental front.

At the top of the CAF rankings, Al Ahly leads with 78 points, followed by Mamelodi Sundowns (62) and Esperance de Tunis (57). Pyramids FC, crowned African champions for the first time this season, sit sixth, while Confederation Cup winners RS Berkane are fourth.

We support your 24 hour economy policy- FAGE to Mahama

National Security warns axle weight station staff against extortion and corruption

Some trucks at an axle weighing station Some trucks at an axle weighing station

The Head of Monitoring and Intelligence at the National Security Secretariat, Hajia Rashida Mahama, has issued a strong warning to officials at axle weight stations across the country, demanding an immediate end to corrupt practices or face prosecution.

The warning was delivered during an official escort operation, in which Hajia Mahama and her team accompanied cargo trucks from Ghana to the Togo border, following a safety request from a logistics company.

Along the route, she uncovered disturbing irregularities at several axle weighing stations.

Hajia Mahama revealed that some station officials were deliberately inflating the recorded weight of cargo in a scheme to extort money from truck drivers.

Even more troubling, she noted that certain personnel were allegedly colluding with companies to bypass the weighing process entirely, diverting state revenue into private pockets.

“This conduct is unacceptable and deeply troubling,” Hajia Mahama stated.

“It deprives the state of millions of cedis that could be invested in essential infrastructure and development projects.”

She further expressed concern over the increasing trend of trucks being parked haphazardly along major highways, describing it as a major safety risk.

She warned that any truck found parked in an unauthorised location would be towed and the drivers sanctioned accordingly.

Hajia Mahama emphasised the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption within the transport and logistics chain, urging all stakeholders to uphold integrity and prioritise the national interest.

Ghana’s government has disbursed GH¢5.7 billion to statutory funds for first-quarter 2025, targeting enhanced local development and social services.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the allocations before Parliament, emphasizing President Mahama’s commitment to revitalizing district governance after what he termed years of neglect.

The District Assemblies Common Fund received GH¢987.97 million, with Forson pledging 80% direct transfers to metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies. “MMDAs will receive no less than GH¢6.1 billion from the GH¢7.57 billion annual allocation,” he stated, criticizing previous administrations for centralizing fund control.

Cabinet-approved spending guidelines mandate specific allocations: 25% for 24-hour Economy Model Markets, 10% each for health facilities and educational infrastructure, 10% for water projects including boreholes, 10% for waste management, 10% for school furniture, 5% for administrative oversight, and 20% to complete abandoned infrastructure projects.

The National Health Insurance Scheme received GH¢2.03 billion, enabling arrears clearance and implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare program branded ‘Mahama Care’. Concurrently, the Ghana Education Trust Fund obtained GH¢2.71 billion, fully covering Free Senior High School operational costs including feeding and infrastructure. Forson framed the disbursements as restoring institutional trust through strategic decentralization and timely fiscal discipline.

Local firms drive new growth phase in Nigeria’s oil sector

0

Nigeria is witnessing a significant shift in its oil and gas landscape as local companies expand their roles, driving a new phase of potential sectoral growth and innovation.

Leading the charge are companies which bought onshore and shallow water assets from oil majors planning billions of dollars of investments to develop abandoned fields.

Smaller producers are also pulling their weight; for example, Nigeria’s first locally developed and operated onshore crude terminal, Otakikpo, began loading operations on Monday. Built by Green Energy Limited and located in the OML 11 block near Port Harcourt, it marks a milestone in local capacity.

Shell loaded the first crude cargo through the 360,000 bpd capacity terminal on Monday, opening up potential drilling prospects for over 40 stranded fields in the region.

Similarly, Conoil Producing Limited recently shipped the first cargo of its new Obodo crude blend from the onshore OML 150 in the Niger Delta. The cargo was lifted by Oando Trading, a subsidiary of Oando Plc, which bought ENI’s divested assets.

Following this trend, Renaissance Africa Energy — after acquiring Shell’s onshore assets — is committing to investing $15 billion over the next five years in its oil and gas operations. The company aims not only to balance its portfolio by increasing crude oil production but also to double its gas output once a key local gas pipeline is completed.

Similarly, Seplat Energy following its acquisition of ExxonMobil’s Nigerian shallow-water assets, recently announced plans to reopen 400 previously shut-in wells. CEO Roger Brown said the company is set to invest up to $320 million this year in drilling campaigns and infrastructure, with the goal of boosting crude production to around 140,000 barrels per day.

“We are focused on reviving existing wells, expanding drilling campaigns, and increasing gas volumes,” Brown said during the company’s annual general meeting.

While these developments show the increasing role local producers are playing amidst government reforms, they are also grappling with challenges.

“These operators face higher costs due to security challenges, community disputes, oil theft and ageing infrastructure – a key aspect of reducing costs for operators will be addressing these challenges,” said Mikolah Judson, an analyst at global risk consultancy, Control Risk.

These local players signal a new phase for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and could provide support for the government’s plan to raise oil output by an additional 1 million barrels per day (bpd) next year, the head of Nigeria’s oil regulator said.

They now account for over half of Nigeria’s oil production from around 40% before the oil majors completed their divestment programmes, according to the regulator’s data.

OSP is terrorising Ken Ofori-Atta – Prof Ansa-Asare

0

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law has accused the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) of acting in a manner that amounts to terrorising former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Professor Kwaku Ansa-Asare believes the handling of the corruption probe by the OSP is excessive, unfair, and unconstitutional.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, June 3, Prof Ansa-Asare questioned the basis for the OSP treating Mr Ofori-Atta as if he were a convicted criminal.

“Ken Ofori-Atta, as at now, is not a suspect who has been tried. He has not been found guilty. No one has established his guilt, so he’s a suspect,” he said.

He stressed that the Constitution protects all citizens from being treated as guilty before trial.

“Because he’s a suspect under Article 19, Clause 3 of our own Constitution, he is presumed to be innocent until we are able to bring him down,” he added.

Prof Ansa-Asare was especially alarmed by what he described as an aggressive approach by the Special Prosecutor.

“My take on this whole issue is, why declare him the most wanted fugitive running away from justice?” he asked.

“You are making Ken look like a murderous fugitive who has stolen all the assets.”

He emphasised that the issues raised by the OSP so far have not been proven offences.

“The Special Prosecutor has outlined five very serious issues. Not offences, issues. If they are not established offences, there’s a way all of us will have to go about it, because of dignity and the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Constitution,” he explained.

When asked if the OSP was being high-handed, Prof Ansa-Asare responded directly.

“I think the state hasn’t approached it in a way that connects with the fundamental human rights and freedoms enshrined in our Constitution,” he said.

“If the Constitution gives us the presumption of innocence, don’t declare anybody the most wanted fugitive on a Red Alert he can deposit on the way.”

He said the result of such actions is fear and humiliation. “When you terrorise an innocent citizen, the end result is that he’s so intimidated he will find it difficult to come back. Because the moment the plane lands, he will be arrested,” he warned.

Asked again if he believed Ofori-Atta was being terrorised, Prof Ansa-Asare was unequivocal.

“I think so,” he replied. “The long arm of the criminal law is seeking to arrest him. So it’s now longer than what we are imagining. We could have gone about it in a much more decent manner.”

Ofori-Atta’s legal team losing public sympathy – Prof Ansa-Asare

0

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law has cautioned the legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to stop antagonising the public in their handling of the Special Prosecutor’s case against their client.

Professor Kwaku Ansa-Asare said the strategy being deployed by the former minister’s lawyers is backfiring and provoking public anger at a time when national patience over corruption is wearing thin.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, June 3, Prof Ansa-Asare expressed disappointment at the legal team’s posture.

“What they are rather doing is antagonising the entire nation. They are infuriating people. They are provoking people,” he said.

He argued that the legal team’s public handling of Ofori-Atta’s reported illness was damaging the former minister’s credibility and eroding any sympathy he might have earned.

“It is a very sensational and screaming case which is testing the endurance of the Republic of Ghana in its fight against corruption,” he noted.

Prof Ansa-Asare said if Ofori-Atta is genuinely sick, as claimed, the right thing to do is to submit credible medical documentation in line with the law.

“If you are sick, please produce the document, because under the OSP law, there must be production of documents. After all, the law deals with evidence,” he advised.

He emphasised that no one, including the Special Prosecutor, will drag an ill person through the legal system without just cause.

“The Special Prosecutor is a human being. I don’t think he will, by all means, attempt to bring Ken Ofori-Atta to face the rigours of the law if he’s sick,” he said.

However, he warned that the absence of proper legal communication was creating the wrong impression.

“Putting out information on the internet that the former Finance Minister has been diagnosed with cancer, and therefore cannot show up physically, I think, will be begging the question,” he argued.

Prof Ansa-Asare made it clear that he does not oppose the right of any accused person to fair treatment.

But he insisted that public trust must be protected through transparent legal processes.

“Perhaps the legal team is not approaching the matter in a way that will attract the sympathy of the nation,” he warned.

“If I were in charge of the legal team, my advice to Ken would be that if you are sick, please produce the document, because under the OSP law, there must be production of documents.

“After all, the law deals with evidence. So if there’s hard evidence, no one can run away from the pieces of evidence that will be available,” he concluded.

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his unwavering support for the autonomy of Ghana’s anti-corruption organizations, promising not to meddle in existing investigations or pressure the dismissal of any cases.

During a meeting with the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption at Jubilee House on Tuesday, May 3, the President expressed his respect for prosecutorial independence and the rule of law.

“I have told the public and assured my Attorney General and Minister of Justice that I am not going to interfere in their work.

“If the anti-corruption agencies go after anybody, I am not going to try and influence them to drop any investigation against anybody, including those who served in the previous regime, many cases of whom we are currently investigating,” President Mahama said.

Parliament passes GH¢1 fuel levy despite Minority boycott

0

The Energy Sector fee (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which imposes a GH¢1 fee on petroleum products, has been approved by Parliament.

The contentious bill was approved late today, Tuesday, June 3, 2025, with the goal of generating more money to pay off the country’s chronic energy sector debt and guarantee a steady supply of electricity.

The overall debt of the energy sector as of March 2025 is US$3.1 billion, according to Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the measure under a certificate of urgency.

He added that in order to pay off this debt in full, at least US$3.7 billion will be needed, and an extra US$1.2 billion will be needed to buy the fuel that thermal power plants need to run throughout 2025.

Customers will not immediately see a price increase as the Minister promised Parliament that the effects of the new charge on ex-pump prices would be “absorbed by the gains made from the strong performance of the Ghana Cedi.”

The Minority Caucus, on the other hand, strongly opposed the law, calling it an unwarranted burden on Ghanaians.

They contended that the Majority side lacked the necessary numbers to make a legally binding judgment on the measure, and their resistance resulted in a walkout during the approval process.

Before the vote, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga had fervently argued for the levy, arguing that it was an essential communal sacrifice to put an end to the ongoing “dumsor” power crisis.

He made a conscious effort to differentiate the new charge from the government’s recently scrapped and highly unpopular E-levy.

Mr Ayariga asked Ghanaians to ensure a steady power future by contributing “one cedi, just one cedi” each liter of fuel.

To alleviate the financial difficulties facing the energy sector, it is anticipated that the approval of this measure will result in an extra GH¢5.7 billion in revenue each year.

Ashanti Market Queens urge traders to reduce prices amid Cedi gains

Market Queen Mothers in the Ashanti Region have called on traders across the country to reduce the prices of goods to reflect the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, particularly against the US dollar.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kumasi, the Queen Mothers applauded President John Dramani Mahama for his effective leadership, which they said has led to a strengthening of the local currency and a significant drop in fuel prices over the past five months.

Madam Grace Adjei Darko, the Adwenhemaa of the Ashanti Region, said traders have a responsibility to adjust their prices in line with the improved economic indicators.

She emphasised that reducing the cost of goods and transport fares would help ease the financial burden on Ghanaians.

“We commend President Mahama for the stability he has brought to the economy.

Now that the cedi is performing strongly and fuel prices are down, we urge our fellow traders and commercial drivers to reflect these changes in their pricing,” Madam Adjei Darko stated.

She further appealed to the government to continue with efforts to sustain the cedi’s appreciation and proposed the introduction of a duty-free port policy to help lower the cost of imported goods.

Nana Akosua Pokua, the Anweniehemaa of Abediakyire, also took the opportunity to highlight key infrastructural needs in the region. She urged the President to prioritise the completion of phase two of the Kumasi Central Market Redevelopment Project, as well as the Krofrom Market, which she noted are critical to commercial activity in the region.

She also called for improvements to road infrastructure in parts of the Ashanti Region to facilitate the smooth movement of goods and people.

The fashionista, who couldn’t hide his excitement after touring the museum, debunked the notion that “money is the root of all evil.”

According to him, the narrative that money is the root of all evil is false, therefore, the youth should take inspiration from Despite’s luxurious vehicles.

“Who said money is the root of all evil? Money is not the root of all evil. You people are not okay. This type of car is not in heaven. There is nothing like heaven. The heaven you are talking about is the one we are standing on right now,” he said.

MoE orders GTEC to audit public universities’ use of internally generated funds

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to conduct an audit into how public universities have utilised their Internally Generated Funds (IGFs).

Minister Haruna Iddrisu stated that there is an urgent need to assess how these funds are contributing to access to quality education and the development of educational infrastructure.

He made the remarks during the commissioning of the Dr. Paul Effah Conference Hall for the Ghana Tertiary Education sector on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

According to him, while the government continues to support public universities, it is equally critical for the institutions to demonstrate prudent use of their own generated revenues.

“We must shine a light on the universities’ utilisation of their IGFs and how that benefits the expansion of access to quality higher education, particularly through the provision of residential halls and, more importantly, lecture theatres,” he stated.

He also tasked the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) with developing a comprehensive blueprint for the establishment of polytechnics in every region.

He disclosed that these regional polytechnics will serve as transitional institutions, equipping students with the hands-on competencies needed for the job market.

“…Don’t you think that another layer is for us to have a polytechnic in each region of Ghana to provide a link between senior high school and the university? What do we do to improve the industry connection?

“So maybe your council would want to look into this and provide the President with a blueprint. It is a possible path to expanding access to higher education that the government should consider — to see if we can establish a polytechnic in each of the 16 regions of Ghana, focusing on employability and industry relevance.”

It was a disappointing end to the series for coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side, who had thrown away a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with the Ivorians just three days earlier.

The return fixture was tighter, with both sides battling through a goalless first half before the hosts found the breakthrough in the 52nd minute. Ghana struggled to respond, and Ivory Coast held firm to seal the win.

The two matches were part of Ghana’s preparations for WAFCON 2024, which kicks off on July 5. Ghana have been drawn into a challenging Group C alongside Mali, South Africa, and Tanzania.

Björkegren will have concerns over his side’s defensive lapses and attacking inconsistency, especially as they gear up for a tough opening game. Ivory Coast, who failed to qualify for the tournament, used the matches to build for the future.

The Black Queens will now return to Accra before heading to Morocco for the competition.

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew says he is yet to decide his future at Leicester City following the club’s relegation from the English Premier League.

Ayew, who joined the Foxes from Crystal Palace in August 2024, endured a challenging debut season under Dutch manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, making 36 appearances and scoring six goals. Despite individual flashes of brilliance, Leicester managed just six wins all season, sealing their second top-flight relegation in three years.

The East Midlands side also set an unwanted Premier League record by failing to score in nine consecutive home matches, surpassing a record previously held by Manchester City.

“I haven’t had time to reflect. I need to go on holiday, sit down and think about the whole season,” Ayew told Flashscore. “It is what it is. The deed is done, and we move on.”

The 33-year-old, who signed a two-year deal reportedly worth £5 million, still has a year left on his contract but says he will take time before making any decisions about his future.

“Staying is an option, and leaving is also an option,” Ayew added. “But I’m happy there. I just want to play football and enjoy myself — that’s what makes me happy.”

I couldn’t finish form 1 – Nana Ama McBrown opens up about her school dropout story

Actress and television icon Nana Ama McBrown has opened up about a deeply personal chapter of her life—dropping out of secondary school due to unpaid fees and the emotional toll it took on her.

In a candid conversation on TV3’s New Day with Berla Mundi, McBrown revealed that her formal education ended before she could complete her first year of secondary school.

“I started at Prince of Peace Girls Secondary, but I couldn’t finish Form 1,” she shared. “I didn’t pay my school fees, and I was so embarrassed. I just felt like, ‘This is not me. Let me step out.’”

McBrown’s voice carried both strength and vulnerability as she recalled how classmates would look at her whenever a teacher entered the room. “Everybody would turn and look at me because they knew I was going home,” she said. “At that time, we were young, so we couldn’t see that things would eventually get better. I just felt like it was a disgrace.”

Despite the setback, the United Showbiz host refused to let the shame define her. She later enrolled in the College of Business Studies—primarily to save face—even though she admitted that deep down, she knew the certificate wouldn’t significantly impact her career.

“I enrolled in the College of Business Studies, Berla, knowing that I would not need that certificate for anything,” she confessed. “But people kept asking the question—‘Why are you not in school?’—and I felt embarrassed.”

Amerado reflects on TGMA 2025 disappointments and shares love for Stonebwoy’s winning track

Ghanaian rapper Amerado has opened up about his mixed feelings following the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), revealing both disappointment and admiration in the aftermath of the event.

In an interview on Hitz FM, Amerado shared that although he had hoped his song Ankonam would win Reggae Song of the Year, he holds no bitterness toward the outcome—especially since the winning track, Psalm 23 by Stonebwoy, is one of his personal favourites.

“But with the ones that I got nominated for, I think Ankonam… I expected Ankonam to win the Reggae Song of the Year, but then it went to Stonebwoy, which is also fine because Psalm 23 is one of my favourite songs from Stonebwoy,” he said.

Before discussing his nominations, Amerado first expressed frustration over an unexpected snub—his track Abronoma, which he firmly believed was a contender for Songwriter of the Year, failed to secure a spot in that category.

“I was expecting to be in the Songwriter of the Year category with Abronoma, and up to now it still marvels my mind why I didn’t get in there,” he said, calling the omission one of the biggest letdowns of the awards season.

Despite the setbacks, Amerado acknowledged the recognition he did receive at the TGMAs and remained gracious about the wins of his peers. His reflections offer a glimpse into the competitive yet respectful spirit among Ghana’s top musical talents.

Akuapem Poloo explains why she prefers dating to marriage; ‘I’ve never been single in my life’

Actress Haniya Rosemond Alade Brown, popularly known as Hajia Fati, has revealed that her mother has embraced the Islamic faith, just as she did three years ago.

Speaking with Nana Romeo, she shared that her mother now bears the name Aishatu, in accordance with Islamic tradition.

“My son is also called Mohammed,” she added.

During the interview on Okay FM, it was also revealed that Ms. Brown—widely known as Akuapem Poloo—had recently given birth to a daughter. She declined, however, to mention the two-month-old’s name.

“I’m anticipating one more child,” she joyfully announced.

While stating that she would get married “very soon,” she clarified that it would only happen “when my husband arrives.”

“There is someone, and plans are underway. After producing the child [with me], he left to work. It’ll take money to do the wedding, so he needs to work for that,” she explained.

Poloo expressed her heartfelt prayer to Allah to build a family with the unnamed man, though she also acknowledged that it wouldn’t be surprising if she never got married.

She explained that her pregnancy and childbirth had not been publicized due to a “change in mindset” and because “the man I’m now with doesn’t like such things.”

“I’m under control. Something is now controlling me,” she said lightheartedly.

According to the award-winning actress, she met her partner during an event.

“I’ve never been single in my life,” she revealed.

“The moment there’s a breakup, I’m with someone else. I’m a woman. Excuse me to say—even the female lunatics on the streets get pregnant.”

Reflecting on her past relationships, she disclosed that she had been with “about seven men,” with the longest relationship lasting eight years.

Rosemond Brown told a surprised Romeo, “Dating is sweeter than marriage.

“I’m not saying marriage isn’t good. But I prefer dating. Let’s stay together as though we were married, but marriage itself involves a lot of unpleasant things.”

She explained that, in her view, “dating is not difficult, but the moment the ring is put on the finger, it brings a lot of negative things. It’s very stressful.”

To illustrate, Poloo explained that while dating is competitive and engaging, marriage often leads to complacency.

She also highlighted how difficult it is, especially for female divorcees, to remarry.

“This is why it’s difficult for women to divorce their husbands, even when they are abused,” she noted, adding that it is easier for men—due to factors like economic advantage—to remarry, whereas women often have to wait for a suitor willing to accept their past.

This complication, she stressed, makes marriage unappealing to her.

If she were ever to marry, she said, “it would be as Allah wills,” and not something she would force. As such, she emphasized, no one should be surprised if she remains in the dating phase indefinitely.

Parliament approves new GH¢1 fuel levy after minority walkout

Parliament has approved the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introducing a GH¢1 levy on petroleum products.

The controversial bill, intended to raise additional revenue to address the nation’s crippling energy sector debt and ensure stable power supply, was passed late today, Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the bill under a certificate of urgency, stated that the energy sector’s total indebtedness stands at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025.

He further explained that a minimum of US$3.7 billion is required to fully clear this debt, with an additional US$1.2 billion needed to procure essential fuel for thermal power generation throughout 2025.

The Minister assured Parliament that the impact of the new levy on ex-pump prices would be “absorbed by the gains made from the strong performance of the Ghana Cedi”, meaning consumers would not experience an immediate price hike.

However, the Minority Caucus vehemently opposed the bill, describing it as an inappropriate burden on Ghanaians.

Their resistance culminated in a walkout during the approval process, as they argued that the Majority side lacked the requisite numbers to make a binding decision on the bill.

Prior to the vote, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga had passionately appealed for the levy, framing it as a necessary collective sacrifice to end the persistent power crises known as “dumsor”.

He explicitly sought to distinguish the new levy from the widely unpopular E-levy, which was recently repealed by the government.

Mr Ayariga urged Ghanaians to contribute “one cedi, just one cedi” per litre of fuel to secure a stable power future.

The passage of this bill is expected to generate an additional GH¢5.7 billion in revenue annually to address the energy sector’s financial woes.

While the government maintains that the strong Cedi will cushion consumers from direct price increases, the Minority’s walkout highlights deep divisions over the approach to resolving Ghana’s energy sector challenges.

Renowned armed robber Adinan Mahmoud, also known as “Okra,” has been found guilty and sentenced to 18 years in prison with hard labor, marking a significant victory for the Upper West Regional Police Command in its fight against armed robbery.

The Ghana Police Service’s Public Affairs Unit in Wa announced in a statement that Okra, 25, was apprehended on Saturday, May 31, 2025, during a high-risk, intelligence-led operation at his hideout in the Sandemuni area of the Wa Municipality.

His involvement in a string of violent robberies across the region had kept him on the police’s wanted list for a long time.

Upon his arraignment in the Wa Circuit Court on Monday, June 2, 2025, Okra pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison with hard labor by His Honor Jonathan Avogo.

Two suspected accomplices, Abdulai Ibrahim, also known as “Baba,” and Abdulai Kipo, pleaded not guilty and were remanded into police and prison custody, respectively. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

According to police, the conviction marks a major step forward in restoring public confidence and enhancing regional security.

“The removal of Okra from the streets brings significant relief to residents, who can now feel more secure in their communities,” said ASP Michael Toya, the Regional Public Affairs Officer.

The Command called on the public to support ongoing efforts to dismantle armed robbery syndicates and maintain lasting peace, reaffirming its commitment to rooting out criminal elements.

“The Command remains resolute in its efforts to track down and bring to justice all individuals who pose a threat to peace and security in the region,” the statement added.
