A law lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, has criticised the Minority in Parliament for what he described as an overly dramatic protest against the continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The protest followed Wontumi’s arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27.

Chairman Wontumi was initially detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the police before EOCO also held him over other allegations.

Although he was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million on Wednesday, May 28, with conditions including two verified sureties, his release has been delayed due to a pending High Court application seeking to review the bail terms. Despite meeting the bail conditions by May 30, the legal process has yet to conclude.

On Thursday, May 29, Minority MPs staged a walkout from Parliament. They later marched to the EOCO headquarters, where they staged a sit-down protest demanding Wontumi’s immediate release on self-recognisance bail, citing his public profile and low flight risk.

However, Professor Appiagyei-Atua, speaking on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 31, dismissed the protest as unnecessary and politically motivated.

“One would have expected that the NPP team would have followed the due process, and that is why I fault the steps they took—leaving Parliament to go and sit down on the floor at EOCO,” he said.

“I think it was needless, just to create some drama and attention, which in the end could have led to lawlessness. Indeed, some lawlessness occurred, considering that a journalist was assaulted. The whole thing was overdramatised,” he added.

He also expressed disappointment that some of the protesting MPs, many of who are lawyers, appeared to have ignored legal protocols in favour of public theatrics.

“Some of these MPs are lawyers, they know the rules, and I don’t know why this time they decided to choose this route, which creates the perception that they want to politicise the situation,” he remarked.

Citi News can confirm the passing of Joseph Ade Coker, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Though the exact cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, sources indicate that he died after a short illness at the Bank Hospital on Saturday, May 31.

Ade Coker was well-known for his outspoken views on national and political issues and was highly regarded by the NDC grassroots.

He was first elected as Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC in 2009 and went on to serve three consecutive terms. He lost his re-election bid in 2022 to the current regional chairman, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore.

Before his tenure in politics, Ade Coker also served as Vice Chairman of the Ghana Football Association, bringing his leadership to the world of sports as well.

His passing marks the loss of a prominent figure in both politics and football administration in Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 30, stated that rebuilding the nation requires national unity, determination, and discipline.

He said the task ahead remained herculean but added however that with discipline and commitment, the nation’s progressive and sustainable development could be achieved.

Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of the Bono Region at the Sunyani Jubilee Park, as part of his “Thank You Tour” to the region, President Mahama said the 2025 budget outlined practicable measures and interventions to restore macroeconomic stability, support small businesses, and drive job creation.

He said: “The work ahead is immense, but with unity, determination, and discipline, we will rebuild our beloved country.

President gave assurance that the Bono Region would be well positioned and would play a central role in his “Resetting” agenda.

“Through job creation, infrastructure investment, agricultural transformation, and rural development, we shall reset our nation,” the President stated.

He called on Ghanaians to rise above partisanship and divisive tendencies, urging a collective effort toward building a better country for all.

President Mahama described his “Thank You Tour” as “more than a gesture of appreciation” saying it represented a renewed commitment and confidence between himself and the people.

“It is a reaffirmation of the trust you have placed in me, and of our shared determination to build a nation worthy of our children and future generations,” the President stated.

President Mahama said the “reset” of Ghana was rooted in restoring national dignity, expanding opportunities, and reviving a shared sense of purpose, saying, “I am happy to say that the programme of resetting Ghana has begun to take shape.”

A 41-year-old man who was nabbed in connection with 32 vacuum-sealed plant like substances suspected to be cannabis has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Joey Mclaren Hammond is facing charges of conspiracy to commit crime namely, exportation of narcotic drugs without license issued by the Minister responsible for Health, two counts of unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs with lawful authority.

Hammond’s plea was not taken by the court.

Browne-Frater Chyna Jade is a 22-year-old British national, the first suspect who had earlier on been remanded by another Circuit Court.

Prosecution led by Hilda Craig, Principal State Attorney, prayed the court to remand Hammond.

Defence counsel opposed the prosecution’s prayer, saying Hammond should be admitted to bail.

The Trial Judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, held that looking at the nature of the accusation against Hammond and the severity of punishment, he would decline bail and remanded Hammond into Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) custody to reappear on June 16, 2025.

The facts before the court are that witnesses are authorised officers of NACOC stationed at Terminal three of Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

The first suspect, Browne-Frater Chyna Jade, is a 22-year-old British national holding a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passport.

Jade was scheduled to travel on British Airways flight BA 2068 from Accra to London.

The second suspect, Joey Mclaren Hammond, is a Ghanaian businessman residing in East Legon, Accra.

The NACOC received intelligence from its foreign counterparts concerning a drug trafficking syndicate engaged in smuggling Thai-grown and processed cannabis into the Unted Kingdom.

As a result, the first suspect, Jade, became a person of interest and was subsequently placed on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Stop List.

On May 18, 2025, at about 6:40 p.m., GIS officials apprehended the first suspect and handed her over to NACOC officers at the Departure Hall of the airport.

During an initial interrogation, she indicated that she had checked in one suitcase, the contents of which she claimed to be unaware.

Acting on suspicion, NACOC officers traced the checked-in suitcase, which had already been loaded onto the aircraft, and had it offloaded.

Jade was then escorted to the NACOC Office, where the suitcase bearing a baggage tag in her name was opened in her presence. Officers discovered thirty-two (32) vacuum-sealed slabs of a plantlike substance suspected to be narcotics. The total weight of the seized substance was approximately 17. 92 kilograms, with an estimated street value of USD 232,960.

A field test conducted on a sample of the substance turned positive result for delta g tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component in cannabis.

Jade was arrested on suspicion of attempting to export narcotic drugs and was taken to the NACOC Headquarters for further investigation.

Jade, during interrogation, said she had been invited to Ghana by her boyfriend. known only as “Joey.”

She further claimed that on the day of her departure, Joey had packed her suitcase in her absence.

When quizzed further about its contents, she was allegedly told it contained Kpoo Keke alcoholic drink, Alomo Bitters, and assorted spices.

She denied any knowledge of the narcotic substances discovered in her luggage.

Efforts were initiated to locate and apprehend the individual identified as “Joey” to assist with ongoing investigations.

The seized narcotic exhibits were sealed in the presence of the suspect and are to be forwarded to the Ghana Standards Authority for analysis.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, Joey, previously declared at large, was arrested and detained in lawful custody.

He was later identified as Mclaren Hammond who voluntarily presented himself to NACOC in the company of his counsel.

During an identification parade, Jade identified Browne Frater as the one who handed her the intercepted suitcase.

Hammond admitted to knowing Jade, and he briefly hosted her in Tse-Addo, but claimed he had no further contact with her thereafter.

The same day, Hammond was arrested and NACOC officers conducted a search at his residence in East Legon, leading to the recovery of assorted weapons, seven wraps of cannabis, and four (4) partly smoked pieces of cannabis from his bedroom.

A black Range Rover vehicle with registration number GE 1435-25 was also impounded.

During an on-the-spot interrogation, Hammond admitted to using cannabis for recreational purposes.

Investigations are still ongoing.

Body of the deceased being transported to the morgue

Residents of the Tema Main Harbour Railways area were left in shock on Friday following a gruesome incident in which a man was reportedly beheaded by a suspect believed to be mentally unstable.

The attacker, identified only as Ali and said to be in his 30s, allegedly decapitated a man believed to be in his mid-50s, who worked as a caretaker in the area.

Eyewitnesses told the Ghana News Agency that Ali carried the severed head in a bag and walked through parts of the community before being apprehended by the police.

He later led officers from the Tema Regional Police Command to the scene where the rest of the body was discovered. The body has since been deposited at the mortuary as investigations continue.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have yet to comment officially on the mental state of the suspect.

Locals expressed horror at the act. One resident, Mr. Isaac Adjei, recalled that Ali had previously worked as a porter, helping offload cargo from trucks near the harbour. However, he noted that “for the past two and a half years, he had started acting insane.”

The community, especially those living in informal settlements around the harbour, remains in shock, with many calling for improved mental health interventions and better security in the area.

Ghanaian counsellor and motivational speaker Charlotte Oduro has broken her silence following her divorce from Apostle Solomon Oduro, delivering a fiery and unapologetic message to critics and to women navigating similar paths.

In a video originally shared by Zionfelix and sighted by MyNewsGh, Charlotte made it clear that she’s not bowing to societal pressures or church expectations that seek to silence or shame her after the split.

“I’m a woman who will stand firm in who I am, and I still preach. I don’t give a heck who is against me. I didn’t die—I’m alive,” she declared boldly.

The outspoken counsellor positioned herself as a voice for women who refuse to let religion or culture crush their spirits. “I’m a testimony for women who didn’t allow society and the church to destroy them,” she said. “They may not accept you now, but with time, they will celebrate you.”

Addressing those who whisper and judge from afar, she continued, “You don’t need to explain yourself to anybody. Life is not in the hands of people—it’s in the hands of God.”

Charlotte also responded sharply to those mocking her while she continues to preach. “If I’m preaching and I hear women giggling at the back, I will shut you up within a minute. That’s who I am. You won’t distract me.”

Speaking with emotion and passion, she empathized with women weighed down by the shame of divorce. “Sister, I see tears in your eyes. You’ve allowed the voices of men to cripple you and sink into your heart—all because you are divorced. You divorced a man, not God. So what is wrong with you?”

Reflecting on her own experience, she added, “Do you think I wanted to end my marriage? Who wants that? No. But sometimes, it needs to happen. And if it happens—it has happened. Then you move on.”

Accra, May 31, GNA – In a bold step towards minimising the textile waste crisis, a new non-governmental organisation, Reclaim Textile Network (RTN), has been launched in Accra to transform discarded textiles into economic opportunities and sustainable fashion solutions. 

 The RTN aims to mobilise secondary and tertiary institutions as well as persons with disability to reduce textile waste through repurposing, upcycling, repair, and education. 

 Speaking at the launch on Friday, Dr Mrs Christiana Konamah Okai-Mensah, the Founder of RTN, described the initiative as a novelty that sought to clean the environment of waste textiles, harness the creativity of students to enable them to generate income to support their education. 

“Textile waste is more than just an environmental problem. It is also an economic injustice. Reclaim Textile Network is here to build a new model where creativity, circularity, and community drive change, especially among the youth,” she said. 

Dr Okai-Mensah, also a lecturer at the Accra Technical University, said RTN was a forward-thinking decolonial initiative seeking to engage fashion design, artisans, and community members in building a more circular and environmentally conscious fashion ecosystem in Ghana.  

Madam Beatrice Arthur, a Sustainability Advocate, said RTN’s mission highlighted the growing urgency of sustainable practices in the fashion industry in Ghana. 

“We see it in our markets, in our landfills, and on our beaches. But with networks like this, we begin to cut through the noise, mend the damage, and weave new pathways rooted in circularity, dignity, and indigenous knowledge,” she said. 

Madam Arthur called on the public to return to the era of mending, repairing, and reusing, as opposed to discarding and rejecting. 

Madam Leticia Nyaaba, the Acting Director at the Environmental Protection Authority, commended RTN for providing a practical solution to the challenges posed by the second-hand clothing trade. 

“This initiative supports the government’s vision for a circular economy. We need more homegrown innovations like RTN to reimagine waste as a resource,” she noted. 

The event featured an exhibition of upcycled fashion pieces created by young designers who work with second-hand garments.  

Guests were treated to a live demonstration of how torn clothing could be transformed into bags, accessories, and contemporary fashion items. 

 Ghana receives an estimated 15 million garments each week, largely from the Global North, with up to 40 per cent ending up as waste, according to the OR Foundation, which works at the intersection of environmental justice, education and fashion development.  

Much of this waste is dumped in open spaces, landfills, or waterways, exacerbating urban flooding, environmental degradation, and public health concerns.

Luis Enrique wept tears of joy and emotion as Paris St-Germain delivered the performance of a lifetime to win the Champions League for the first time on a remarkable night in Munich.

And, as PSG outclassed Inter Milan for a historic 5-0 victory, brilliant teenager Desire Doue confirmed his status as one half of a new duo of young superstars – alongside Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal – who have the genius to dominate the game for years to come.

The poignant human story was PSG coach Luis Enrique, who became only the sixth coach to win this tournament with two different clubs after his triumph with Barcelona in 2015.

The sporting story was one of the finest team displays in the history of this tournament, in this and its previous guise of the European Cup, with generational teenage talent Doue as its centrepiece.

On the most important night of a career, Doue made the biggest stage in European club football his playground.

This was also a win heavy with significance and meaning for 55-year-old Asturian Luis Enrique, beyond the glory of the brutal beauty of this PSG triumph that finally brought the giant Champions League trophy to The City Of Light.

The man who has transformed PSG has spoken about how he helped his daughter Xana plant a Barcelona flag in the centre circle after that 2015 triumph over Juventus in Berlin.

He said he hoped he might make the same gesture here in her memory after she died from a rare form of bone cancer aged nine in 2019.

Accra Lions will be fighting for their Premier League survival when they welcome eighth-placed Dreams FC to the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The Medical Superintendent of the Suntreso Government Hospital, Dr. Thomas Agyarko-Poku, has called for urgent intervention to improve the hospital’s infrastructure and boost healthcare delivery.

Despite significant challenges, he affirmed management’s commitment to enhancing services.

A critical concern is the acute lack of space across several departments, including the emergency unit, outpatient department (OPD), children’s block, and eye clinic—which currently operates from an improvised structure.

Located in the Ashanti Region, the Suntreso Government Hospital serves several communities within the Kumasi metropolis and beyond. Its accessibility makes it a preferred alternative for patients who cannot endure the long wait times at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

One of the oldest public health facilities in the region, Suntreso plays a key role in regional healthcare delivery. However, growing patient numbers and infrastructure deficits have severely strained its capacity, especially in high-demand departments.

Patients are also affected by the poor condition of the hospital compound—dusty during the dry season and muddy in the rains. Seasonal downpours have continued to damage key hospital buildings, further disrupting operations.

Third-placed Asante Kotoko welcome Medeama SC to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday in crucial matchday 33 encounter of the Premier League, with both sides eyeing strong finishes in what has been a fiercely competitive campaign.

Kotoko’s title hopes suffered a significant blow last weekend after a frustrating goalless stalemate away to fellow contenders Gold Stars FC,  their tenth draw of the season. The Porcupine Warriors now sit five points adrift of leaders Nations FC, with 55 points after 32 matches. Though the league crown appears out of reach, Abdul Karim Zito’s side remain firmly in the race for a top-three finish and will be determined to maintain momentum at home.

Kotoko boast an impressive record at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, going unbeaten in their last five home matches (W4, D1), and conceding only twice during that run. With 12 wins, two draws, and just two losses from 16 home games, they are the second-best home side in the league this season. Their overall campaign has seen them score 33 goals while conceding 22, and Sunday presents an opportunity to notch a 13th home victory and bolster their top-four credentials.

Medeama SC, currently sixth with 50 points, enter the penultimate round knowing they cannot be overtaken but have a real chance to leapfrog Hearts of Oak into fifth place. The Mauve and Yellow have been the league’s most potent attacking side, netting a league-high 41 goals while conceding 29. However, their Achilles’ heel has been their poor away form. They head into Sunday’s fixture on the back of eight consecutive away defeats,  a run that leaves them with the most losses (12) among the top-half clubs.

Despite their away struggles, Medeama will be keen to end their dismal road record and grab all three points to keep their top-four ambitions alive. Historically, recent meetings between the two sides at Baba Yara have been closely contested. Since the 2020/21 season, each side has won twice in their last four league meetings in Kumasi. Kotoko claimed narrow 1-0 wins in the 2021/22 and 2023/24 seasons, while Medeama earned a 2-1 victory in 2020/21 and a 2-0 win in 2022/23.

The Aviation Social Centre turned into a sea of energy and celebration on Saturday night as football lovers wrapped up Hitz FM’s electrifying Rep Ur Jersey event with a pulsating afterparty.

Following PSG’s stunning 5–0 victory over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final, fans, particularly PSG supporters and neutrals, stayed behind to keep the energy alive.

DJs from Hitz FM took over the turntables, blasting back-to-back hits that got the crowd dancing deep into the night.

While some Inter fans looked visibly heartbroken, the overwhelming mood was one of celebration and community.

Clad in colourful jerseys, supporters jammed to Afrobeats, highlife, dancehall, and amapiano tracks, waving flags and singing along.

The afterparty crowned what had been a packed day of activities—from FIFA game tournaments and basketball showdowns to a lively football gala.

Parliament has ratified the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and promote sustainable fisheries management.

The ratification was spearheaded through a joint memorandum by the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, and the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.

This move marks Ghana’s formal endorsement of the global agreement adopted at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva in June 2022. The pact aims to eliminate harmful subsidies that drive overfishing and IUU activities, particularly in overexploited waters and on the high seas. It introduces binding prohibitions on subsidies linked to IUU fishing and depleted fish stocks, with transitional provisions for developing countries like Ghana.

Speaking on the ratification, the Minister, Emelia Arthur stated: “The ratification of this Agreement aligns with Ghana’s Marine Fisheries Management Plan (2022–2026), our national blueprint to restore marine fish stocks, enhance data collection, and improve enforcement. It also supports our broader efforts to build a resilient, equitable fisheries sector.”

Ghana’s fisheries sector remains a key pillar of the economy, supporting millions of livelihoods and contributing to food security, nutrition, and foreign exchange earnings. However, the sector faces persistent challenges including declining fish stocks, overcapacity, and environmental degradation.

The timing of the ratification is significant, as it aligns with the Fisheries Ministry’s plans to establish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)—a crucial measure for replenishing stocks and sustaining coastal communities.

According to the memorandum submitted to Parliament, the agreement also seeks to create a level playing field for Ghana’s artisanal and semi-industrial fishers, who often face stiff competition from heavily subsidised foreign fleets, particularly from China, Japan, and the European Union.

The ratification brings Ghana closer to fulfilling Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.6, which calls for the elimination of harmful fisheries subsidies by 2025. Following parliamentary approval, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture will transmit the instrument of ratification to the WTO Secretariat. Simultaneously, the Ministry is revising national fisheries laws to align with the agreement’s provisions.

Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare added, “This is not just a trade agreement; it is a pact to protect the future of Ghana’s marine resources and the millions who depend on them. It signals Ghana’s role as a responsible flag and coastal state committed to sustainability, fairness, and international cooperation.”

The government has assured stakeholders that the implementation process will include broad consultations, public awareness campaigns, and capacity-building programmes to ensure effective enforcement and stakeholder buy-in.

This development strengthens Ghana’s leadership in sustainable fisheries governance and highlights its dual commitment to environmental stewardship and economic resilience, particularly as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
