The announcement was made on the official X page of the United Nations, highlighting her remarkable work during her deployment with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in South Sudan.

She received the prestigious award at a ceremony held on May 29, 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award was established in 2016.

It is presented annually to military peacekeepers, who demonstrate exceptional dedication to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.

The award recognises efforts that promote the inclusion of women in peace and security efforts and calls for measures to prevent gender-based violence in conflict.

Since her deployment in March 2024, Squadron Leader Syme has spearheaded numerous initiatives focused on gender inclusion, including impactful health outreach programmes and comprehensive gender sensitisation training for military personnel.

Mahama announces plans to revive ‘dead’ cocoa sector, promises attractive producer price

Hardworking cocoa farmers will receive incentives to boost production Hardworking cocoa farmers will receive incentives to boost production

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to revamp Ghana’s cocoa sector.

He has aimed to restore its vibrancy and sustainability.

According to President Mahama, hardworking cocoa farmers will receive incentives to boost production.

He also announced that an additional 200,000 hectares of cocoa would be added to Ghana’s total output which will increase farmers’ income.

Addressing cocoa pricing, President Mahama assured farmers that the new producer price would be highly attractive.

He stated that the price would surpass the rate set by Côte d’Ivoire, providing better earnings for farmers.

Speaking during his Thank You tour in the Ahafo Region on Saturday, May 31, 2025, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the sector’s revival.

“Plans are underway to revamp the collapsed cocoa sector. Incentives will be provided to our hardworking farmers to increase cocoa production. We aim to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa to Ghana’s output to boost farmers’ income,” he said.

“To cocoa farmers, the COCOBOD Chief Executive has informed me that in August, they will announce the new cocoa producer price. And I can assure you, the price is going to be a very, very, very good price,” he indicated.

Currently, the producer price stands at GH¢3,100 per 64kg bag, reflecting a marginal increase of 0.03% from the previous rate set in September for the 2024/2025 crop season.

This adjustment, equivalent to GH¢49,600 per tonne, aims to align cocoa prices with global market conditions and provide much-needed support to Ghanaian cocoa farmers.

Ablekuma Central Assembly gives 5-day ultimatum to roadside vehicle owners

0

The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly has given a five-day ultimatum to individuals who leave vehicles by the roadside under the pretext of repairs.

They are to remove these vehicles immediately or face penalties.

This directive is part of a broader effort by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Frank Nkansah, to decongest the municipality.

“We are about to begin a decongestion exercise targeting the unauthorised use of public roads and spaces. Many main streets in Ablekuma Central have become makeshift car repair sites, causing congestion and inconvenience for residents and commuters,” Mr Nkansah said.

During an inspection tour on Friday, May 30, 2025, the MCE described the situation as a public nuisance and ordered that such vehicles be moved to proper garages.

“To restore order, the Assembly will deploy municipal guards on Thursday, June 5, 2025, to enforce our bylaws. Abandoned vehicles will be towed, and violators will be sanctioned as per local regulations,” he added.

Mr Nkansah reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining discipline, cleanliness, and safety across communities and called on residents to support the Assembly’s efforts in creating a more orderly and healthier environment.

As part of his tour, the MCE also visited an unauthorised dumping site near the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) at Ayigbe Town, close to the Agbogbloshie market.

He expressed concern over the level of indiscriminate waste disposal in the area, warning that it poses serious environmental and public health risks.

“This is unacceptable. There is an urgent need for a coordinated national response to waste management,” he said.

Mr Nkansah stressed that while local assemblies are doing their part, tackling the sanitation crisis requires the involvement of government agencies, the private sector, and the general public.

He added that the Assembly will soon roll out stricter measures to stop illegal dumping and improve sanitation in the municipality.

Real Madrid star, Jude Bellingham declares his love for girlfriend Ashlyn Castro as she returns to social media following claims she dated multiple celebrities

Real Madrid star, Jude Bellingham declares his love for girlfriend Ashlyn Castro as she returns to social media following claims she dated multiple celebrities

Jude Bellingham has gone public with his affection for girlfriend, Ashlyn Castro following her return to Instagram after a four-month absence.

The Real Madrid and England star responded to her latest post with a green heart emoji, and Castro replied with a kissing-face emoji, marking a very public show of affection.

The couple’s relationship was first revealed in January, and they have since been seen together several times, including at the Bernabéu, where they watched a match alongside Bellingham’s mother, Denise. They also appeared together after Real Madrid’s Champions League clash against Manchester City earlier in the season.

Castro, 27, is a model and influencer with over 600,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok. Despite their growing visibility, the early stages of her relationship with 21-year-old Bellingham have been overshadowed by internet speculation and false claims. A viral video linked her to several celebrities, including Michael B. Jordan, LaMelo Ball, Terance Mann, Lewis Hamilton, and Jamie Foxx, based on social media interactions.

In response to the attention, Castro released a 10-minute emotional video on TikTok addressing the rumors.

In the monologue, titled “The hardest part is not speaking the truth, but finding the courage to do it,” she denied allegations of infidelity and explained that she had only been in three relationships over the past eight years.

She explained that her first relationship, in 2017, was with a public figure, which opened her up to unwanted scrutiny.

She said, “There was nothing on the internet about me prior, so people kind of just made up a bunch of things to justify hating me because of who I was dating at the time.” She added, “Every angle you can think of, people have attacked me, harassed me, been so disrespectful. It’s just been too much.”

Castro said it was difficult for her to speak on camera about her personal life but felt compelled to address the misinformation. She clarified that she’s only had three serious relationships, including one with NBA player Terance Mann, who has publicly defended her.

In a livestream, Mann said, “Ashlyn is cool, people. I don’t know why everybody is on her head about anything. She’s cool. Me and Ash are cool.” He also shut down cheating rumors, encouraging fans to “calm that narrative down.”

Despite the challenges, Bellingham and Castro appear to be stronger than ever, brushing off the noise and continuing to share glimpses of their bond with the world.

Ayine has abandoned what he taught us – Alex Gyamfi

0

Private legal practitioner and member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alex Gyamfi, has taken a strong swipe at Attorney General Dominic Ayine, accusing him of overseeing a legal regime that contradicts the very human rights values he once upheld.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Asaase Radio’s The Forum, Gyamfi expressed deep disappointment in the Attorney General’s perceived silence and complicity in a series of state actions that raise eyebrows within legal and civil society circles.

Wontumi ignored NIB invitation before arrest saga

0

Security consultant, Richard Kumadoe has revealed that operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) were previously deployed to the residence of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, after he allegedly failed to honour an earlier invitation from authorities.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 31, Kumadoe said the development, which went largely unreported at the time, signaled an earlier attempt by state security to engage the embattled party official prior to his recent legal troubles.

“In the case of our brother Wontumi, what people have forgotten is that not long ago, you saw NIB guys in front of his house, and because they did not communicate what happened, people did not know that he was previously invited and he failed to show up,” Kumadoe disclosed.

Chairman Wontumi was invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, over alleged financial misconduct linked to the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

Subsequently, he was arrested by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO), which is conducting a separate probe into suspected financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. He was granted bail set at GH₵50 million with two justified sureties on Wednesday, May 28.

In protest of his continued detention, Minority Members of Parliament stormed EOCO’s head office in Accra, demanding his immediate release. Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs marched from Parliament to EOCO, occupying part of the street in front of the building.

Their presence disrupted traffic and drew heavy police deployment. Chants of “justice for Wontumi” rang out as they accused EOCO and other state bodies of politically motivated harassment.

Richard Kumadoe, however, argued that legal avenues exist to challenge the bail terms, stressing that the protest only served to politicise a legal matter.

“As a country, we must allow investigative bodies to operate within the framework of the law. If there are genuine concerns about rights violations, those issues can be addressed through legal avenues, not street protests,” he said.

Although Wontumi’s legal team initially struggled to meet the bail conditions, his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed on Friday, May 30, that all requirements had been fulfilled. However, a fresh legal challenge has since delayed his release.

“We encountered some difficulties which will be sorted out on Monday, June 2. We will work towards the desired results. I will stay out of politics and the theatrics and do what is within the law,” Appiah-Kubi told the media.

In such case, the OSP will also begin the process to request an INTERPOL Red Notice against Mr Ofori-Atta.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is investigating Mr Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, a former Minister of  Finance, over five major issues during his tenure in office under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo:

The Key Issues under investigations are:

  • Petroleum and Minerals Revenue Assurance:Contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

On February 10, 2025, Mr Ofori-Atta’s lawyers submitted a doctor’s note stating he was undergoing tests and possibly surgery, with no clear return date.

On February 12, 2025 the OSP declared Mr Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice, acting on an arrest warrant.

On February 18, 2025, Mr Ofori-Atta appealed to the OSP to remove his name from the ‘Wanted List’ and provided a definite return date in May 2025.

The OSP accepted his assurance and subsequently took his name off the list

In March 2025, Mr Ofori-Atta filed a lawsuit against the OSP and the Special Prosecutor, seeking compensation for what he called an unlawful declaration of him as wanted, and asked for the removal of related publications from the OSP’s social media.

The High Court in Accra (Human Rights Court) heard an interim application from Mr Ofori-Atta, asking that the OSP be barred from declaring him wanted again on March 28, 2025.

Following this the OSP gave a deadline of June 2, 2025 for Mr Ofori-Atta to report in person to the OSP headquarters.

How can you neglect your wife just because you paid her dowry?

Rev. Anthony Dzadzra speaking at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference Rev. Anthony Dzadzra speaking at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference

Pastor and marriage counsellor at Fountain Gate Chapel, Rev. Anthony Selom Dzadzra has strongly rebuked men who justify the mistreatment of women under the guise of paying dowry.

During his address at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference in Accra, held under the theme “Arise, Shine, and Impact”, Rev. Dzadzra criticised the abusive behaviour some men exhibit after paying dowry.

“It’s bad. How can you be with somebody’s daughter, only daughter, somebody’s only sister, or somebody’s girlfriend and say because you’ve paid something called dowry, you can slap her face, take food from her, or ignore her for a month?” he questioned.

He continued, “Are you mad? You refuse to provide for her and neglect her, all because you call yourself a man?”

The pastor’s remarks drew reactions from the audience at the conference and have since sparked reactions online.

Held on May 31, 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, the conference sought to empower, transform and uplift women from all walks of life.

Activities included breakout sessions, exhibitions, performances, and networking sessions that highlighted the achievements of women.

Mahama announces Cashew Development Board to revamp industry

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced bold plans to revitalise Ghana’s cashew industry with the establishment of a Cashew Development Board.

The initiative, unveiled during his “Thank You” tour of the Bono Region, aims to transform the sector into a major economic driver through coordinated reforms and strategic investments.

The proposed board will oversee cashew production, processing, and pricing, with a focus on ensuring fair returns for farmers and boosting Ghana’s competitiveness in the global cashew market.

“This board will not only streamline the entire cashew value chain but will also give farmers the recognition and support they deserve,” President Mahama stated.

“Our goal is to make Ghana a leading cashew exporter while improving livelihoods across farming communities.”

The President’s visit to the Bono Region was both a gesture of gratitude for the region’s support in the 2024 general elections and a reaffirmation of his administration’s commitment to fulfilling key campaign promises.

As part of the broader initiative, the government is expected to collaborate with the private sector to establish cashew processing plants across the region.

This value-addition strategy is aimed at increasing exports, creating jobs, and attracting investment into the agro-processing sector.

Stakeholders in the region welcomed the announcement, describing it as a significant step toward unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s cashew industry.

I Sold My Car And Started Taking Commercial Cabs Because I Didn’t Want To Beg People For Money”Okele

News Hub Creator1h

Nollywood actor Tunde Usman, popularly known as Okele, has stated in a new interview why he decided to sell his car, a decision that led him to take public transport wherever he went.

Okele revealed in a video that was posted on the official YouTube channel of Behind The Fame TV that he sold his car and he started taking commercial vehicles to his destinations simply because he needed money but that he does not want to beg people for money.

In his statement, Okele said, “People should stop judging actors success on the number of houses and cars they have, they should only judge us based on our film making skills. I sold my car and started taking commercial cabs because I didn’t want to beg people for money. I never knew that a mechanic could take cars from people, but it later happened to me. I spent almost five million in order to repair the car, but when I noticed that the mechanic was only collecting money from me, I decided to sell the car.”

From Big Brother to Isolationist: Trump’s visa halt reshapes America’s image

0

In a sweeping and contentious decision, President Donald Trump’s administration has suspended all new student visa interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, effective May 27, 2025, as part of an effort to expand social media vetting for applicants.

This policy, combined with actions like the attempted revocation of Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students and the termination of federal aid to foreign nations, marks a significant shift in U.S. policy.

These moves raise profound questions about America’s commitment to globalization, its role as a global leader, and the potential for international retaliation. This article examines the consequences of these policies for the United States, their implications for the interconnected “global village,” and the likely responses from other nations.

Globalization, the intricate web of trade, culture, and education that binds nations together, has long defined modern international relations.

The United States has historically been a beacon of this interconnectedness, drawing over 1.1 million international students each year who contribute roughly $44billion to the economy and sustain more than 378,000jobs, according to the Institute of International Education. These students, particularly in STEM fields, drive innovation and bolster
U.S. competitiveness on the global stage.

Yet, the Trump administration’s recent actions—halting student visa interviews, intensifying scrutiny of social media for perceived anti-Semitic or pro-terrorist content, and targeting universities like Harvard for their alleged liberal biases—signal
a retreat from this global framework.

The decision to cut foreign aid, a cornerstone of U.S. soft power, further distances America from its international partners.

These policies prompt a critical question: Does President Trump believe in globalization, or is his administration prioritizing
isolationism under the pretext of national security?

LatexFoamPromo

The suspension of student visa interviews and the imposition of stricter vetting carry significant consequences for the United States, both economically and geopolitically.

International students are a vital economic engine, injecting billions into universities and local economies.

A prolonged halt or heightened barriers could deter students from choosing U.S. institutions, leading to a decline in
enrollment and revenue, particularly for public universities reliant on full-tuition-paying international students.

This could strain university budgets and reduce funding for research and development, where international students play a pivotal role. Beyond economics, the U.S. risks losing its edge in innovation. Foreign-born students make up one in five STEM workers in the U.S., addressing a domestic shortage of graduates in these critical fields, as noted by the National Science Foundation. By restricting access, the U.S. may drive talent to competitors like Canada, Australia, or China, which are actively welcoming international students.

The damage extends to America’s global reputation. Long viewed as a welcoming destination for education and opportunity, the U.S. has cultivated an image as a global “big brother.”

However, the visa halt, coupled with actions against elite universities like Harvard for their perceived failure to combat antisemitism, risks portraying the U.S. as hostile or unreliable. International students and their home countries may turn to alternatives, diminishing America’s soft power and influence in academic and cultural spheres. Domestically, these policies have sparked legal and political backlash.

A federal judge temporarily blocked the attempt to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students, and over 100 lawsuits from affected students forced the administration to restore thousands of visa registrations in April 2025. These legal battles underscore the contentious nature of the policies and could further polarize opinion, alienating universities and advocacy groups whoargue that the measures infringe on free speech and academic freedom.

The halt on student visas and the reduction of foreign aid could provoke retaliatory measures from other nations, undermining the spirit of the global village. Countries like China, which has publicly urged the U.S. to protect its students’ rights, may impose reciprocal restrictions on American students or professionals seeking to study or work abroad, disrupting educational and professional exchanges.

Nations that send large numbers of students to the U.S., such as India and China, may redirect their talent to countries with more welcoming policies, like Canada or Australia, which have already seen increased interest due to U.S. restrictions during Trump’s first term.

The decision to cut foreign aid could further strain diplomatic relations with nations reliant on U.S. support, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These countries may reduce cooperation on critical issues like trade, security, or climate change, viewing the U.S. as an unreliable partner.

The European Union, which has criticized Trump’s policies as undermining global cooperation, has hinted at potential countermeasures, signaling broader diplomatic friction.

President Trump’s actions suggest a deep skepticism of globalization as traditionally understood.

His “America First ” agenda prioritizes national security and economic protectionism over international collaboration. The student visa halt and the revocation of foreign aid align with a pattern of policies—such as trade tariffs and immigration crackdowns—that favor unilateralism over interdependence. While Trump has expressed support for retaining talent, such as proposing green cards for foreign graduates during his campaign, his administration’s actions create barriers for the very students he claimed to value. This approach challenges the concept of the global village, where nations rely on mutual cooperation. By targeting international students and cutting aid, Trump appears to prioritize short-term political goals—appealing to his base by cracking down on immigration and perceived liberal institutions—over long-term global engagement.

Other nations are already responding to these policies. China has called for the protection of its students’ rights, signaling potential diplomatic tensions. Countries like Canada and Australia are likely to position themselves as stable, welcoming destinations for international students, capitalizing on America’s restrictive stance. The European Union’s mention of countermeasures suggests a broader pushback against U.S. unilateralism, which could manifest in trade disputes or reduced cooperation on global issues. For the U.S., the path forward requires balancing national security with the benefits of global engagement. Restoring student visa processing with clear, transparent guidelines could mitigate economic and reputational damage. Reinstating foreign aid, even selectively, could rebuild trust with allies. However, the administration’s current trajectory suggests a continued emphasis on isolationist policies, which may further strain America’s role as a global leader.

In conclusion, President Trump’s suspension of student visa applications and the reduction of foreign aid represent a significant departure from the principles of globalization that have shaped U.S. policy for decades. The consequences — economic losses, diminished innovation, and a tarnished global reputation—could weaken America’s standing as a global leader. Other nations are likely to respond with reciprocal restrictions, redirected educational alliances, or diplomatic pushback, challenging the notion of a global village.

While the administration frames these measures as necessary for national security, they risk alienating talent and allies at a time when global cooperation is critical. The world is watching, and the United States must decide whether it will lead or retreat in an increasingly interconnected world.

Proposal for Independent Fiscal Council is unnecessary – Prof Kwaku Asare

0

Legal practitioner and governance expert, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare Legal practitioner and governance expert, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare

Legal practitioner and governance expert, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has dismissed proposals for the establishment of an Independent Fiscal Council in Ghana, describing it as an unnecessary duplication of existing oversight functions.

In a Facebook post on June 1,2025, Prof Asare argued that the proposed council’s responsibilities could be effectively handled by the Auditor-General with only modest investment in analytical and forecasting capabilities.

“With modest investment in analytical and forecasting capacity, the Auditor-General could fully absorb the functions of the Fiscal Council, legally, operationally, and independently,” he said.

The call for an Independent Fiscal Council has gained traction amid Ghana’s ongoing efforts to implement fiscal reforms under economic recovery programmes.

The council is intended to help promote long-term fiscal discipline, transparency, and credibility in public financial management.

However, Prof Asare contends that the creation of new institutions to address governance challenges is a recurring and flawed approach in Ghana’s policymaking.

He noted that such moves often result in overlapping mandates, blurred accountability, and increased public expenditure on salaries, logistics, and office infrastructure.

“We have a penchant for creating new institutions for old problems. This approach duplicates existing mandates, muddies responsibility and accountability, and risks becoming tools of patronage masked as technocratic solutions”, he indicated.

Prof Asare further argued that the proposed council’s roles are already covered by existing entities, including the Auditor-General (compliance and transparency), the Ministry of Finance (forecasting and policy design), and parliamentary committees (oversight and scrutiny).

Rather than introduce a new body, he proposed enhancing the capacity of current institutions such as the Auditor-General’s Office and the Budget Office to improve fiscal governance.

“We must resist the impulse to solve every reform challenge by creating a new committee. Creating new structures while neglecting existing ones reflects a misplaced confidence in form over function”, he stated.

However, he said that while the idea of a Fiscal Council may be well-intentioned, it is ultimately redundant and should be shelved in favour of strengthening existing oversight institutions.

I’ll give that press release to a plantain seller

Social media influencer, Ama Burland Social media influencer, Ama Burland

Popular influencer Ama Burland has taken a swipe at Glitch Africa following the company’s denial of her recent allegations concerning the “Rants, Bants & Confessions” podcast.

The controversy erupted when Ama Burland and co-host Gisella Amponsah accused Glitch Africa of orchestrating a smear campaign against them.

They alleged that the company paid bloggers to insult them in order to generate online buzz.

Also, they claimed that Glitch Africa failed to protect them from cyberbullying and refused to let them preview podcast episodes before they are aired.

In response, Glitch Africa issued a statement categorically denying all allegations, describing the claims of cyberbullying and sabotage as false and unfounded.

However, in a series of tweets posted on May 30, 2025, Ama Burland fired back: “Gonna print that release and give it to a plantain seller to serve plantains on it.”

The ongoing public exchange between the former hosts and Glitch Africa has since sparked massive discussions on social media, with fans and industry observers weighing in on the dispute.

The “Rants, Bants & Confessions” podcast, known for its candid and lively discussions, has featured high-profile guests including musician Shatta Wale.

Labour expert bemoans slow adjustment of commodity prices despite cedi gains

0

Secretary General of Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson Secretary General of Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson

The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has expressed concern over traders’ reluctance to reduce commodity prices, despite the recent appreciation of the cedi against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar.

According to him, although petroleum prices -petrol and diesel – have dropped at various pumps, the prices of essential goods remain high.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, May 31, 2025, he noted that the failure of market prices to reflect the improved exchange rate undermines the economic relief expected by ordinary Ghanaians, especially the working class.

“The strengthened cedi is encouraging, and its impact on fuel prices is significant. However, essential commodity prices are taking too long to adjust, while workers’ incomes remain stagnant, eroding their purchasing power,” he said.

He added that; “If the prices of essential commodities are not reduced as the cedi continues to appreciate, the working class will lose out on the government’s Reset Agenda.”

Koomson called on the government to enforce price regulations, stating that such a move aligns with its goal of reducing the high cost of living in the country.

“Since the government’s financial and economic policies aim to lower the cost of living, stringent measures must be put in place to ensure immediate compliance with price regulations,” he stated.

The cedi is currently trading at GH¢10.28 per $1 on the interbank market.

The British pound is being bought at GH¢13.84 and sold at GH¢13.86, while the euro is trading at a buying price of GH¢11.66 and a selling price of GH¢11.67.

Former Greater Accra NDC Chairman Ade Coker Dies After Short Illness

0

Ghana’s political and sports fraternities are mourning the loss of a prominent public figure as Joseph Ade Coker, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has passed away. He died on Saturday, May 31, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a brief illness, according to sources close to the family. The official cause of death has yet to be publicly confirmed.

The news, confirmed by Citi News, has sent ripples across political circles and among grassroots members of the NDC, where Ade Coker was a towering presence for more than a decade. Known for his forthright opinions and unwavering dedication to party ideals, Coker’s contributions to Ghanaian politics were deeply felt, especially in the Greater Accra Region.

During his tenure, which began in 2009, Ade Coker served three consecutive terms as Regional Chairman, spearheading the NDC’s campaign strategies and maintaining strong ties with the party’s grassroots base. His leadership tenure was marked by both internal party consolidation and visible political activism in the region.

However, in 2022, his long stint came to an end when he lost his re-election bid to Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore. Despite the electoral setback, Coker remained a respected voice within the party and continued to share insights on national discourse through various media platforms.

Prior to his political career, Ade Coker also made significant contributions to Ghanaian football. He served as Vice Chairman of the Ghana Football Association, where his administrative acumen was instrumental in shaping policies and advancing the sport’s development.

As news of his passing spreads, tributes have begun pouring in from political allies, sports administrators, and ordinary citizens alike. Many describe him as a dedicated leader who balanced the demands of politics with a genuine passion for national progress.

Meanwhile, funeral arrangements and official statements from the NDC are expected in the coming days. In the face of this sudden loss, Ghana has bid farewell to a man who left his mark in both politics and sport — a legacy that will not be forgotten.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has directed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to present himself in person at its headquarters on Monday, June 2, 2025, warning that failure to do so will carry serious consequences.

In a statement on Sunday, June 1, the OSP cautioned that should Mr. Ofori-Atta fail to honour the summons, he will be reinstated on its list of wanted persons and officially declared a fugitive from justice.

The office further indicated it would begin processes to issue an INTERPOL Red Notice, potentially subjecting the former minister to international arrest and extradition.

This directive comes as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and abuse of office. Mr. Ofori-Atta was previously taken off the OSP’s wanted list following what authorities described as “significant cooperation.” However, that decision now hangs in the balance as the June 2 deadline approaches.

Elsewhere, in Grenoble near Lyon, a high-speed car ploughed into a group of revellers, leaving four people seriously injured.

One young woman remains in critical condition.

Disturbing footage from the capital captured the descent into disorder. Fires blazed through the night as fans ignited mattresses and bicycles near the stadium.

Riot police in full gear clashed with unruly groups throwing bottles, flares, and fireworks—even before halftime, when PSG had already taken a 2-0 lead.

Despite a heightened security presence—over 5,400 police officers were deployed, and streets around the stadium were sealed off—by night’s end, 559 arrests had been made, 491 of them in Paris.

According to Le Figaro, 192 injuries were reported, most in the capital, and one police officer remains in a coma.

As a precaution, PSG’s flagship store on the Champs-Élysées had been boarded up before the match, anticipating potential unrest and looting.

Chaos wasn’t limited to France. In Munich, where the final was held, rival supporters clashed violently at Fröttmaning station near the Allianz Arena, with scenes of stone-throwing and scuffles captured on video.

On the field, PSG delivered a record-breaking 5-0 performance to clinch their maiden Champions League title. Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring 12 minutes in, followed by a deflected strike from teenage sensation Désiré Doué.

Doué, named Player of the Match, added a second goal in the second half.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and another goal capped off the night’s emphatic win.

Yet, the celebrations that should have united the nation in pride were marred by violence and loss.

French authorities have vowed to investigate the incidents and assess current security measures, as a night of sporting glory ended in grief and reflection.

Clocking a blistering 9.86 seconds, Saminu not only set a new national benchmark but also emerged as the fastest man in the world so far this year.

The 27-year-old’s performance surpasses the previous national record of 9.90 seconds set by Benjamin Azamati in March 2021, establishing him as a leading contender for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. His winning time also comfortably meets the qualification standard for the global event.

“This is a huge moment for me and for Ghana,” Saminu said after the race. “Breaking the national record and becoming the world’s fastest this year is a dream come true, but I know there’s more work to be done.”

In addition to his individual exploits, Saminu is a vital part of Ghana’s 4×100-metre relay team, which has also secured a spot at the World Championships. His versatility and explosive speed make him one of Ghana’s brightest medal prospects on the international scene.

Saminu previously represented Ghana at the Paris Olympics, where he advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s 100m, gaining valuable experience on the world stage. With his current form, expectations are high as he heads to Tokyo aiming for a podium finish.

FLASHBACK: ‘I make $1 million every single day from mining’

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi

Amid the continued detention of the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), over his delayed meeting of bail condition, an old video interview has resurfaced online.

In the interview, he proudly claimed to have made significant daily earnings from gold mining.

The outspoken politician and businessman, in an interview with media personality Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, revealed that he made a staggering $1 million per day from mining.

“…You can verify from the Precious Minerals Marketing Company. Just mention Hansol Mining or Chairman Wontumi’s name, they know me. They’ll pick up my file, and you can check how much I was making every day. The company was making $1 million each single day. Ghana is so rich. I had about 500 excavators and about 400 pickups.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH¢50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes.

Until Friday, his legal team had only managed to secure one surety.

The bail conditions proved difficult for him and his supporters, including high-ranking party members such as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to meet in order to ensure his release.

The former Vice President described the bail conditions as “onerous.”

On Friday, Wontumi’s legal team confirmed that they had fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by EOCO. However, despite this development, his release has been delayed due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can move forward,” his lawyer, Andrew Appiah-Kubi, explained.

“Unknown to me, an application was filed to frustrate what we are doing. We will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by me, but it has prohibited his release,” Appiah-Kubi added.

Chairman Wontumi remains in custody, hoping to be released on Monday, June 2, 2025.

How cedi appreciation creates a strategic window for entrepreneurs

0

The performance of a country’s currency significantly influences commercial potential. Recently, the Ghanaian cedi has exhibited signals of appreciation against the US dollar, presenting new opportunities for companies.

A stronger cedi implies cheaper import costs, decreased inflation, and increased purchasing power for consumers. But does this indicate now is the time to start a business? The answer is determined on the industry, business model, and your ability to capitalize on the present economic climate.

This article delves into why starting a business during a cedi upswing can be a wise decision, as well as the important benefits and practical measures to take advantage of this opportunity.

Lower costs for import-dependent businesses

A stronger cedi provides significant cost savings for enterprises that rely on imports.

Retailers may acquire devices like smartphones and laptops at lower prices, while manufacturers benefit from lower-cost foreign raw materials.

Auto part dealers also benefit from lower import rates. To maximise these benefits: Identify the high demand imported goods in your sector. Negotiate bulk purchase agreements with suppliers to lock in existing prices. Optimise inventory planning to expand the advantage.

This currency window enables import-dependent enterprises to increase profit margins or provide more competitive pricing. Smart operators will use this time to enhance supplier relationships and establish inventory buffers for future exchange rate swings.

Increased consumer spending power

An appreciating cedi frequently results in reduced inflation or at least delays inflationary pressures. This increases the purchasing power of the average Ghanaian, particularly in metropolitan areas.

Prices are more stable. Consumers are more likely to spend money on non-essential things such as clothing, electronics, cosmetics, and entertainment. Businesses that provide value-added services, lifestyle items, or convenience-based offerings are more likely to see steady demand.

If you’re targeting middle-income earners or young professionals, now is an excellent time to introduce reasonably priced, high-quality products and services.

Affordable fuel and transportation costs

A stronger cedi directly decreases fuel prices by making petroleum imports cheaper.

This creates three major advantages: Reduced logistics expenses for delivery and transportation operations. Cheaper operations for agricultural and distribution firms. Lower generator costs for power-dependent businesses.

For logistics providers, farmers, and e-commerce companies, this exchange rate increase represents an excellent opportunity to scale operations profitably.

With gasoline being a major expense, firms should use these savings to expand fleets, increase deliveries, or optimize supply chains while prices remain low. The current economic climate creates a favorable environment for growth in fuel-sensitive sectors.

Opportunity to build a resilient business before potential depreciation

While the cedi’s present strength provides immediate benefits, astute entrepreneurs see this as a one-time opportunity to future-proof their businesses.

The cautious approach includes Establishing Market Presence by locking in clients today while operating costs are still favorable.

Strategic stockpiling, which include increasing inventory reserves of imported products ahead of future currency fluctuations. Revenue Diversification will create several income streams to withstand economic swings. I strongly propose implementing hybrid business models that combine import-dependent operations (taking advantage of current rates).

Local production/sourcing (to protect against future devaluation). This balanced approach enables organisations to capitalise on today’s possibilities while building buffers against tomorrow’s uncertainty.

Forward-thinking entrepreneurs should seize this opportunity to establish structural advantages that will last beyond the current favourable exchange rates.

Easier access to foreign equipment and technology

A stronger cedi greatly lowers expenses for imported business needs. Industrial machinery for manufacturing and agricultural processing Cutting-edge technologies for IT and digital businesses.

Solar equipment for renewable energy applications. This currency advantage is an excellent chance for: Manufacturers plan to update production lines. Tech startups will buy affordable hardware: Green energy companies plan to increase their business. Businesses in these sectors should act quickly to take advantage of favourable exchange rates, as equipment acquisitions done now will result in long-term cost savings and competitive benefits. During this time, strategic investments in foreign technology can help your company achieve long-term success.

Conclusion

The Ghana cedi’s increase against the dollar provides an excellent opportunity to establish a business. It lowers your entry costs, increases access to vital business tools, boosts consumer demand, and gives you a competitive advantage in key industries.

Entrepreneurship is frequently about recognizing the appropriate moment and this is one of those times.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a business, now is the time to act. Do not wait till the next economic slump or currency depreciation to reconsider your decision.

Use the current macroeconomic edge to begin confidently, plan properly, and prepare for long-term success.

If the dollar hits 8 cedis, I’ll carry President Mahama on my…

News Hub Creator20h

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Nana Agyemang Badu II, had the crowd in stitches when he playfully told President John Dramani Mahama, “If the dollar ever drops to 8 cedis under your watch, I’ll carry you on my back and run a whole kilometer—for free!”

This lighthearted moment happened during Mahama’s “Thank You” tour stop in Dormaa on Friday, May 30, 2025.

But behind the laughter was a subtle nod of approval. The traditional ruler acknowledged the recent gains the Ghanaian cedi has made, especially in the face of global economic challenges.

“The way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if you actually do it,” Dormaahene teased, drawing cheers and laughter from the gathering.

While his comment was wrapped in humour, it was also a way of giving Mahama credit for the relative stability of the cedi in recent times—gains that many believe have come from stronger fiscal policies and investor confidence.

Nollywood actor Daniel Etim Effiong, in an interview with Chude Jideonwo, has made it known in clear terms how he met his wife on a movie set when the two of them came back to Nigeria to work together on a movie production and how he told her not to see him as someone who has a lot of money saved somewhere.

In a video that was shared on the official YouTube channel of With Chude TV during an interactive session, he stated that he met the lady who eventually became his wife on a movie set, and when they started dating, he told her that he didn’t have enough money, and she agreed to marry him.

NPP should avoid lawlessness and use the court – law professor

0

A law professor at the University of Ghana has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for resorting to street protests over the bail conditions of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, describing their actions as an unnecessary display when proper legal channels were available.

Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, an Associate Professor at the Law Faculty of University of Ghana, said in a television discussion programme on Channel  One TV on Saturday, (May 31, 2025) said the NPP’s decision to march from Parliament to the EOCO headquarters amounted to an overreach that encouraged avoidable lawlessness.

“The NPP’s actions, leaving Parliament to stage a protest at the police premises, were unnecessary and created drama. This led to lawlessness,” Prof Appiagyei-Atua stated during the the television discussion programme.

He explained that while bail is a constitutional right, the EOCO acted within the law by imposing the GH¢50 million bail condition on Mr Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The party chairman has been arrested over alleged money laundering, fraud and causing financial loss to the state.

“Given the nature of the allegations, the GH¢50 million bail condition does not strike me as excessive. Legally, EOCO acted within their authority,” Prof Appiagyei-Atua said.

He noted that there are clear legal avenues available to anyone who considers bail conditions to be too harsh.

“If the bail terms are thought to be too stringent, the proper legal step is to apply to the High Court for a variation. That’s the course Mr Antwi-Boasiako’s lawyers should have taken,” he said.

LatexFoamPromo

Prof Appiagyei-Atua added that it was particularly concerning because many of the NPP Members of Parliament who took part in the protest are themselves lawyers.

“The MPs, many of whom are lawyers, are familiar with legal procedures and have followed them before. Opting for this extralegal approach suggests an intention to politicise the matter,” he remarked.

Although he condemned what he termed a “Rambo-style” arrest of the party chairman, Prof Appiagyei-Atua maintained that the subsequent bail process was consistent with the law.

He said that bail conditions are generally determined by assessing several factors, such as the risk of flight, likelihood of reoffending, potential interference with investigations, and the seriousness of the alleged offence.

He suggested that the NPP’s response reflected their adjustment difficulties following their transition from government to opposition.

“It appears the NPP is still grappling with the reality of being out of power. They seem intent on showing their supporters that they stand by their own, especially a prominent figure like Mr Antwi-Boasiako,” Prof Appiagyei-Atua observed.

He urged political actors to adopt more measured responses that blend legal processes with political engagement, without losing control of the situation.

“They should have pursued legal and political strategies in balance, rather than letting things spiral,” he advised.

The controversy followed the arrest of Mr Antwi-Boasiako over alleged involvement in money laundering.

Prof Appiagyei-Atua also stressed on the principle of equality before the law in Ghana’s democratic system.

“The law is no respecter of persons. It must apply to everyone, regardless of political party or position,” he said.

Former President Kufuor endorses National Day of Prayer

0

By Edward Dankwah

Aburi, May 31, GNA – Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has endorsed the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, slated for July 1, 2025.

He said July 1, the Republic Day, marked a pivotal moment in Ghana’s history, the day the nation appointed its first president and formally became a Republic.

It was a day of great national significance and should not be overlooked, he added.

Former President Kufuor gave the endorsement on Friday during a visit by a delegation of the Planning Committee of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving to his residence to seek his blessings.

The visit was also to brief him on the upcoming event and formerly invite him.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving is designed to bring together Christians, Muslims and  other religious groupstogether for a common purpose, on the theme: “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity.”

The Christian segment of the programme will be held at the forecourt of the State House from 0800 hours to 1000 hours, followed by Muslim prayers at the National Mosque from 1230 hours to 1400 hours.

He said the initiative by President John Dramani Mahama to commemorate the milestone was timely and commendable as it would ensure inclusive prosperity.

“I fully support this initiative. As we look forward to July 1, we will come together to thank the Almighty for how far Ghana has come, and to seek His guidance as we strive toward a future of abundance, fairness, and happiness across all 16 regions,” he added.

Former President Kufuor said the initiative was even long overdue, because July 1 was when Ghana truly affirmed its independence and sovereignty, making it a fitting occasion for national reflection and gratitude.

He said the essence of governance should be centered on upholding human dignity, and that differences in ethnicity or religion were secondary to shared humanity.

“All humans are inherently entitled to respect and sovereignty, as all authority originate from the people, especially in a constitutional democracy,” he said.

“That’s why we vote in elections, by doing so, individuals delegate a portion of their sovereignty to elected officials. This, I believe, should define the nation’s political culture.”

Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Chairman of the Committee, said the day had spiritual and national significance, adding: “A country does not develop solely by economics or infrastructure, but on the strength of her people.”

The event would not only be held in Accra, but replicated in all 16 regions and 266 districts.

The committee chair said the initiative underscored the President’s recognition of divine guidance in Ghana’s journey, especially at a time when the country continued to enjoy peace and relative stability amid global unrests.

He said there was a reason Ghana remained an oasis of peace, such that each time the nation approached a national election, tensions  arose, “yet we consistently emerge stronger as a nation.”

Mr Ankrah touched on the inclusivity of the programme, saying it would welcome people of all faiths and even those without religious affiliations to take a moment of introspection.

“Whether you’re a Christian, Muslim, or you don’t even believe in anything, you have to reflect on why you were born in Ghana and not in Gaza or Sudan. We are here by grace, and that day is about acknowledging that,” he said.

‘Don’t try to discredit me, you can’t rewrite Ebony’s story’ – Bullet tells Ogee

Ricky Nana Agyemang, popularly known as Bullet, has firmly denied claims made by OgeeTheMC regarding the discovery and early development of the late dancehall star, Ebony Reigns.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, Bullet shot down Ogee’s assertion that he discovered Ebony and worked with her for a year before introducing her to Bullet.

“That interview he gave was full of lies,” Bullet stated. “He claimed he discovered Ebony and worked with her for a year before handing her over to me. In reality, he only knew her for a week before he introduced her to me,” he stated.

Recounting the events, Bullet said he met Ogee at a club while scouting for new talent. It was there that Ogee mentioned meeting a promising young girl.

“I was searching for an artiste and met him at a club. He told me about a girl he had met who he thought had potential. The next day, she called me. She didn’t know anything about music, she had never even been to a studio,” he added.

Refuting Ogee’s claims, Bullet stated, “All that talk about working with her for a year, writing her songs, taking her to studios, and giving her a stage name, those are all lies.”

Bullet acknowledged that while Ogee did introduce Ebony to him, it is inaccurate for him to claim that he discovered her.

“When Ebony started working with me, I didn’t see him around. It was only after she blew up that he started coming around. He can say he introduced her to me, that’s fine. But claiming to have discovered her is a stretch. A lot goes into discovering and grooming an artiste,” he established.

Bullet further warned Ogee against distorting the narrative or undermining the hard work that went into building Ebony’s career.

“He can talk about Ebony in interviews, that’s not a problem. But he shouldn’t try to discredit me or the work I put in. I don’t know his motive, maybe he wants money or something,” he stated.

Bullet suggested that if Ogee truly believes he has a knack for discovering talent, he should channel that energy into nurturing new artistes instead of making unsubstantiated claims about the past.

I Divorced a Man, Not God – Rev. Charlotte Oduro Speaks Her Truth Amid Public Scrutiny

In a bold and heartfelt statement, renowned Ghanaian marriage counsellor Rev. Charlotte Oduro addressed the public scrutiny following her recent divorce from Apostle Solomon Oduro. Emphasizing her unwavering faith, she declared, “I divorced a man, not God,” highlighting that her spiritual commitment remains steadfast despite the dissolution of her 16-year marriage.

The couple’s separation, officially confirmed by Apostle Oduro, cited irreconcilable differences after a three-year period of estrangement. Rev. Oduro revealed that they had not shared a bedroom for two years and had been without sexual intimacy for seven years, underscoring the deep-seated issues that led to their parting.

As a prominent figure in marriage counselling, Rev. Oduro faced criticism for her own marital challenges. She encouraged women to find strength in adversity, stating, “I didn’t die, I’m alive,” and positioning herself as a testament to resilience.

Following the divorce, Rev. Oduro underwent a noticeable transformation, adopting a more contemporary style that contrasted with her previously conservative appearance. This change sparked discussions on social media, with many interpreting it as a sign of personal liberation and renewal.

Steady and Quiet, Bryan does it again

0

In a political week filled with dramatic events and responses, one man is effortlessly making headlines, forfeiting fanfare for impactful results.

As Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi remained in custody over allegations under EOCO investigation, it was not the visit of high-profile politicians or media caravans that shifted the story, but the quiet, effective intervention of Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

While other political figures arrived at EOCO with cameras and foot soldiers in tow, Mr. Acheampong took a different path. Without any public spectacle whatsoever, he stepped in and fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail requirement including all necessary documentation for two justified sureties. By the end of the day, the path to Wontumi’s release was clear, pending only a procedural delay stemming from a new legal application.

The moment has not gone unnoticed. In the swirling landscape of NPP succession politics, the contrast between performance and delivery couldn’t have been clearer.

For many political observers, the incident has become emblematic of Bryan Acheampong’s approach to leadership; defined not by ceremony, but by effectiveness. While some raced to make appearances, he took quiet ownership of the situation and solved the problem.

This is not the first time Mr. Acheampong has made an impact without drama. Throughout his public career — in parliament, government, business, and philanthropy — he has cultivated a reputation for being steady, strategic, and reliable. In contrast to the highly stylised moves of some contenders in the NPP flagbearer conversation, his actions last week tell a story of intentional leadership and practical loyalty to his party.

As news of Mr. Acheampong’s role spread, another dimension of the story came into focus: the source of his capacity to act so decisively. His ability to meet such a steep bail condition without fanfare, fundraising, or political negotiation — has reignited discussion about his strong financial muscle from
his well-established businesses.

Unlike many political figures whose financial strength is murky or party-dependent, Bryan Acheampong’s wealth has roots in visible, functioning enterprises. From the expansive Rock City Hotel project in Kwahu to his earlier ventures in tech and security systems, he has long been one of the few politicians whose business credibility is beyond dispute.

This is the kind of financial independence that, in the context of Ghanaian politics, speaks directly to credibility and integrity. It enables a leader to act, not just advocate — and to lead from a place of stability rather than obligation.

The Wontumi episode may be small in the grand arc of national politics, but it offers a revealing glimpse into what Ghana could expect from Bryan Acheampong as a presidential candidate — and perhaps, one day, as president.

He has shown that he values order over optics. In times of tension, he prefers resolution over rhetoric. That political loyalty is not something to be advertised, but demonstrated through action.

The difference between standing with someone and standing for them was made clear this week. Bryan Acheampong didn’t issue a press release. He didn’t pose for the cameras. He didn’t simply show up — he delivered.

This brand of leadership — understated, focused, and purposeful — is beginning to resonate across the party’s grassroots, especially among delegates looking beyond the noise for competence, substance, and reliability.

The Wontumi moment has vindicated legend, showcasing Bryan Acheampong as a serious, steady, well-resourced, loyal, and disciplined leader who may indeed represent a brighter future for the NPP- and Ghana.

Wontumi experiencing inhumane treatment – Political Analyst

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako

Policy Analyst, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has described the treatment of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as cruel.

According to him, the actions carried out by state agencies, including EOCO, against Wontumi are unsympathetic and does not align with the government’s reset agenda.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points, the senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Political Science Department clarified that while he supports the prosecution of individuals suspected of corruption, the manner in which they are treated remains questionable.

“I am not against state agencies prosecuting perceived corrupt persons, but the treatment of Wontumi is inhumane. This is not the reset they want us to believe,” he stated.

Background

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for several serious criminal offenses, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed these investigations on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

According to the Deputy AG, these criminal investigations are running concurrently with efforts to recover assets, aiming to prevent the dissipation of suspected proceeds from crime.

Dr Srem-Sai also hinted at a second line of inquiry, suggesting Wontumi’s alleged involvement in a broader international organized crime scheme, with EOCO collaborating closely with international law enforcement agencies.

Bail and Legal Proceedings

Wontumi was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million, with two sureties to be justified.

His legal team, led by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, submitted property documents through Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, to satisfy the GH¢50 million bail bond imposed by EOCO.

Reports indicate that Bryan Acheampong’s title documents were valued above the required threshold.

However, EOCO officers were unable to proceed with verifying the documents after being notified of a new application requesting a review of the bail terms.

Wontumi’s anticipated release on Friday was stalled due to a last-minute application for a variation of his bail conditions, filed at the High Court.

Appiah-Kubi informed journalists that he only became aware of the bail variation application, filed on May 30, 2025, late Friday evening, which disrupted the validation process of Bryan Acheampong’s documents.

As a result, Chairman Wontumi remains in EOCO custody until the High Court rules on the application, which was filed by legal practitioner Gary Nimako Marfo.

Wontumi files motion to review bail conditions

Chairman Wontumi

Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed a motion at an Accra High Court seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed on him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The application, filed, on Friday, May 30, challenges the GH₵50 million bail, which his legal team argues was excessive and intended to prevent his release.

The application requested the court to reconsider the bail terms based on the grounds outlined in the accompanying affidavit.

The court is scheduled to hear the motion on June 3, 2025, at 0900 hours.

Chairman Wontumi’s legal team is expected to present arguments seeking a reduction or modification of the current bail conditions.

The motion was submitted by Marfo & Associates, the law firm representing the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for various criminal offences including fraud, causing financial loss to the State and money laundering.

The criminal investigation was running concurrently with asset recovery processes to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime.

The suspect was also under a second strand of investigation which was part of a larger international organised crime scheme.

Mr Antwi Boasiako was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, following a summons by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Ajagurajah, Obinim, and O.Bempah Stir Drama at Rev. Obofour Mother’s Funeral, Leaving Kumasi in awe

A recent funeral in Kumasi has become the focal point of national attention, as prominent Ghanaian religious figures—Bishop Kwabena Asiamah (Ajagurajah), Bishop Daniel Obinim, and Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah—made notable appearances at the funeral of Rev. Obofour’s mother, Nana Afia Pokuah. The event, held in the Ashanti Region, was marked by dramatic displays and unexpected interactions among these influential pastors.

Bishop Asiamah, leader of the Ajagurajah Movement, captivated attendees by generously spraying cash on mourners, a gesture that elicited cheers and applause. Clad in his signature red and black attire, he and his entourage’s presence underscored the close relationship between him and Rev. Obofour.

Rev. Obofour, founder of the Anointed Palace Chapel, made a grand entrance accompanied by bodyguards, drawing significant attention. His arrival was met with enthusiasm, and he was seen exchanging pleasantries with fellow clergy members, including Bishop Obinim. The two, once known for their public disagreements, have recently shown signs of reconciliation.

The funeral also saw the attendance of other notable figures from the religious, political, and entertainment sectors, highlighting the significance of the event in Ghanaian society.

When lawmakers themselves appear unwilling to abide by the laws they legislate

Justice, equality, and fairness are the cornerstones of any functional democracy. A just society requires that all individuals be treated equally, regardless of their social, economic, or political standing.

The proverb “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” is a variant of the phrase “You don’t try throwing stones when you want to enter the house,” as stated by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi. According to this adage, someone who is weak or flawed shouldn’t criticise others, as doing so can expose their own shortcomings.

The arrest and subsequent protest surrounding Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)—have sparked significant discourse on accountability, the rule of law, and the political climate in Ghana. The protests, led by members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, raise important questions about political solidarity, the integrity of state institutions, and the implications of political influence on judicial processes.

Wontumi has been accused of various financial irregularities, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. The investigations are reportedly linked to a larger international organised crime scheme, which complicates the matter further and underscores the gravity of the allegations against him. Under Ghanaian law, individuals accused of serious crimes must be held accountable, especially when the stakes involve public trust and the potential misuse of state resources.

The principle of accountability is paramount in any democracy. It mandates that individuals—particularly those in positions of power—are answerable for their actions and decisions. In this context, one must ask: should the leaders of a political party rally behind an individual merely because he represents their party, regardless of the seriousness of the allegations levelled against him? Public trust depends on the willingness of political actors to allow due process to unfold without undue interference.

The protest staged by the Minority MPs in support of Wontumi presents a fascinating yet troubling aspect of Ghanaian politics. On one hand, it showcases political solidarity within a party framework. On the other, it raises concerns that some legislators do not regard the sanctity of legal processes that underpin the rule of law. In a functioning democracy, lawmakers should prioritise the legal structures and norms designed to ensure justice—especially when a fellow party member is facing serious allegations.

Protests can serve as an essential tool for nonviolent expression and advocacy for change. However, when political actors leverage protests to challenge the integrity of the legal system, it sets a dangerous precedent. Are they drawing attention to a potential miscarriage of justice, or are they attempting to exert political pressure to manipulate outcomes for a party ally?

The act of protesting in support of Wontumi does not merely reflect on him; it reflects on the broader political environment in which accountability often becomes a casualty of partisanship. Political supporters must recognise that they can advocate for their members without compromising the principles of justice and accountability. Otherwise, they risk fostering an environment where political allegiance takes precedence over legal obligations.

Beyond the protest itself, the legal context surrounding public demonstrations in Ghana—particularly the Public Order Act—raises a critical discussion about adherence to laws designed to maintain public order. Section 491(1) of this Act stipulates that any individual or organisation intending to hold a special event in a public place shall notify the police at least five days prior to the event, to minimise disruptions to daily life.

In the case of these protests, there are legitimate concerns regarding the adherence to this law by Members of Parliament. A public servant’s obligation is not solely to advocate for their constituents but also to abide by the laws of the land. Their actions during the protest illustrated a paradox: they demanded accountability for a party member while simultaneously disregarding the legal protocols meant to govern public demonstrations.

This contradiction reflects a broader narrative within Ghana’s political landscape: the perception that political affiliation grants immunity. This could lead to an erosion of public trust, as ordinary citizens may perceive that political elites are above accountability to both their constituencies and the law. It illustrates a dangerous notion—that one can act without regard for consequences simply because of political connections.

Moreover, this situation serves as a crucial reminder to the Ghanaian populace about the need for continuous engagement with, and scrutiny of, their political representatives. Citizens should advocate for accountability and demand from their leaders a full commitment to transparency in governance.

The unfolding story surrounding Wontumi’s detention and the subsequent protests highlights profound issues within the Ghanaian political landscape. Upholding the rule of law should never be subordinate to political allegiance or influence; rather, every citizen—especially those in leadership—must respect it.

The protest highlights the need for greater accountability and transparency in Ghana’s political system, as allegations of financial irregularities against Chairman Wontumi are serious and should be thoroughly investigated. The protest may be seen as political grandstanding, with the focus on scoring political points rather than promoting accountability.

Kudos to lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi for handling the Wontumi case with maturity. Unlike some others who seem to politicise every issue, he is allowing the legal process to unfold. Due to politics, it is pitiful to hear so many lawyers claim that the fifty-million-Ghana-cedi bail requirement was unfair. They made such statements without knowing the specifics or particulars of the offence. If people believe the investigation or bail conditions are unfair, the court is the right place to contest it. While law enforcement isn’t obligated to disclose details, providing information about Wontumi’s arrest could enhance transparency and credibility.

Ghanaians are eager to see all duty bearers held accountable. No one is above the law. Let’s allow the law to take its course.

Ghanaian socialite, Mona Faiz Montrage, popularly known as Hajia4Reall, has made her return to social media and the music scene with a new single titled “We Move.”

Mona was deported back to Ghana recently after serving a year-long prison sentence in the United States.

Announcing her return to social media in grand style, she released her new song along with a music video on her social media platforms.

The video opens with scenes of her in a prison cell, symbolizing her arrest, and includes powerful lyrics like “If I fall, I go rise,” reflecting her resolve and personal journey through adversity.

Background Hajia4Reall’s legal troubles began in November 2022, when she was arrested in the UK and later extradited to the U.S. in May 2023. She pleaded guilty in February 2024 to one count of conspiring to receive stolen money, related to a series of romance scams that defrauded victims of over $2 million.

In June 2024, she was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The court also ordered her to forfeit $216,475 and pay $1,387,458 in restitution.

Upon completing her sentence, Hajia4Reall’s legal team successfully negotiated a voluntary return to Ghana, avoiding further detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

A symbolic return and the link to her new song

“We Move” is not just a song title, it’s a popular Ghanaian slang meaning “to carry on with life despite setbacks.”

For Hajia4Reall, it’s a message of personal growth and a bold declaration that her past will not define her future.

The release has since sparked massive discussions. While some fans have praised her resilience and openness, others question the message her return sends, given the nature of her past conviction.

Pratt calls out Trump’s ‘double standards’ on South African racism claims

0

Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper and General Secretary of the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG), Kwesi Pratt Jr, has lambasted US President Donald Trump’s accusations of racism in South Africa.

He has labeled them as a clear case of “double standards.”

Pratt asserts that President Trump lacks the moral authority to criticise South Africa on grounds of genocide and racism.

Speaking on Pan African TV on May 31, 2025, during a discussion on African countries’ over-reliance on Western democracies, Kwesi Pratt condemned the perceived embarrassment Trump subjected South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to during a recent Oval Office meeting at the White House.

Describing President Trump’s posture as “a pot calling a kettle black,” Pratt argued that the US President is engaged in far worse actions elsewhere.

“Now, I was struck by the fact that the leader of the country which most supported apartheid in South Africa is the one who has the effrontery today to look South Africa in the face and accuse South Africa of racism.

“Sometimes we forget that when the late South African President, Nelson Mandela, after 27 years in prison and was released and contested elections and won and became president of South Africa was still on the list of terrorist list of the USA. It is the president of the USA which is now turning round to accuse South Africa of racism, unbelievable!” he stated.

Kwesi Pratt then drew a parallel to the ongoing assault on the Gaza Strip by Israelis, which he noted is backed by the US President.

He contended that the atrocities inflicted upon Palestinians are incomparable to what is allegedly happening in South Africa.

“I’m trying to find a scenario that best depicts this situation for now but let me use this one. It is a case of a pot calling a kettle black. It is unbelievable that the president of the USA is talking about racism and in some video he describes what is happening in South Africa as genocide against whites,” Pratt exclaimed.

“Now this is the country that is supplying the bombs which are being dropped on Gaza. 70,000 people have been killed in Gaza. Two-thirds of them are women and children. This is the country providing intelligence to the Israeli army to bomb Gaza. They are showing Israeli where to bomb and this is that country accusing others of genocide,” he further highlighted.

Pratt, subsequently, called for African leaders to support one another and wean themselves of foreign reliance.

We Will Stay in Opposition for Long If We Continue Like This

In recent days, Ghana’s political landscape has been shaken by the arrest of Chairman Wontumi, a well-known and influential figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The incident has sparked widespread speculation and stirred controversy within the party and the nation at large. In the midst of the uproar, Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong has come forward to firmly deny any involvement in the matter, cautioning against internal sabotage and disunity that could cost the party dearly in the future.

“I am NOT behind Chairman Wontumi’s arrest,” Agyapong declared. He used the opportunity to clear his name following circulating rumors that he may have played a role in Wontumi’s legal troubles. Agyapong’s rebuttal is not just a personal defense but a warning to the NPP that continued infighting could push the party into prolonged opposition.

Chairman Wontumi, known for his outspoken demeanor and strong base within the party, has become the center of intense political discussion following his arrest. The situation has ignited debate about the internal dynamics of the NPP and whether there are deliberate attempts by some members to bring others down.

Kennedy Agyapong, famous for his blunt and direct communication style, addressed the media with a strong message: the party must not allow personal vendettas and misinformation to destroy the unity it needs, especially as it prepares for future elections. He emphasized that this type of division could weaken the NPP’s image and electoral prospects, stating in no uncertain terms that if such behavior continues, “we will stay in opposition for long.”

The reaction within the party has been divided. Some members have expressed strong support for Wontumi, while others are wary of the legal implications and the political fallout. Agyapong’s remarks echo the sentiments of party loyalists who believe that in times of crisis, solidarity—not sabotage—is needed.

Political analysts warn that if the NPP fails to resolve its internal conflicts and present a united front, the opposition could capitalize on the turmoil. Agyapong’s effort to distance himself from the controversy is being viewed by some as a calculated move to protect his political future and by others as a call to action for party unity.

The media’s role in amplifying the controversy cannot be ignored. The spread of rumors and half-truths has contributed to public confusion and internal mistrust. As the situation develops, key figures like Agyapong will need to communicate clearly and constructively to help steer the party back on track.

Ultimately, the NPP is at a crossroads. The handling of Chairman Wontumi’s arrest and the subsequent internal responses will shape the party’s public image and internal strength going forward. Kennedy Agyapong’s warning serves as a stark reminder: without unity and discipline, the NPP risks remaining in opposition far longer than it expects.

The coming days and weeks will be critical as the party navigates this internal storm. Whether the NPP can overcome this challenge and refocus on its core mission will determine not just its electoral future, but its very relevance in Ghanaian politics.
