The Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) has announced the immediate termination of contracts for all caterers engaged under the initiative across the country.

In an official statement dated May 2, 2025, the GSFP directed that no current caterer should provide meals for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year.

“Please be informed that contracts of all caterers of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) nationwide have been terminated with immediate effect. Accordingly, no existing caterer on the programme should cook for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year,” the statement read.

The Secretariat, however, assured affected caterers that all outstanding payments for the previous term would be settled. “All outstanding arrears for the second term of the 2024/2025 academic year will be paid in due course,” it stated.

The termination, according to the GSFP, forms part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at improving the efficiency and impact of the programme.

“As part of its ongoing restructuring exercise, the GSFP Secretariat will soon announce the modalities for the recruitment of new caterers,” the notice added.

Excavator operator arrested for galamsey in Apranum Forest Reserve

0

Excavator operator, Ahmed Nuhu has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service after he was caught by officials of the Akim Oda Forestry Commission engaging in illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, in the Apranum Forest.

The suspect together with several others who are currently on the run invaded the Apranum forest reserve close to Asante Akyem area on the Pra river with two excavator degrading the forest.

Acting on intelligence, the Assistant District Manager of the Akim Oda Forestry Commission, Richmond Amo-Adjei, together with forestry guards swooped in on them right in the act and managed to arrest Ahmed Nuhu, his accomplices, however, took to their heels entering the forest.

Confirming the arrest to the media, Richmond Amo-Adjei who indicated that the two excavators had been confiscated says the suspect has also been handed over to the Dwaso police who have taken over the investigations to get those who are currently on the run.

“We went for a community walk in Kade. While we were returning, we got the hint that some persons were within the forest engaging in galamsey. So, yesterday, we, together with our Rapid Response Team, went there to verify the hint we earlier got. We also realised that there were more people than we were told.

The people managed to clear two hectares of land, and they had two excavators on site, engaging in illegal mining.

“As we almost got there, those operating the changfans on the river nearby saw us and quickly spread the news that there was an operation going on. But we were quick to arrest one of the excavator operators,” he stated.

He however cautioned recalcitrant illegal miners who are operating within forest reserves to vacate.

"They no give us Award but God give us grace" - Portable claps back at Headies (video)

Portable has taken to his Instagram story to air his mind about not receiving any Headies award days after the event.

The controversial singer reflected on what he sees as yet another industry slight.

In his words, “They no give us award, but God give us grace.”

He went on to reveal that he was actually invited to perform at the show but couldn’t attend because he was locked up for five days at the time. Sarcastically, he asked in Yorùbá: So if I had shown up to perform, I still wouldn’t have received any award?

He added, also in Yorùbá, that even though they didn’t give him an award, he’s been making money, just bought a new car, and feels truly blessed.

Fitch Warns US Aid Cuts Could Hit Ghana’s Current Account Surplus

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, May 2, GNA – Ghana’s current account surplus, a vital economic buffer, is projected to decline by 3 per cent in 2025, according to ratings agency Fitch.

The contraction is linked to the United States’ decision to cut aid to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) by 90 per cent.

Fitch noted that international aid is a key source of foreign exchange for African countries, including Ghana, currently making up half of all net transfers to the account.

Historically, the US has contributed about a fifth of Ghana’s total aid receipts.

USAID has supported sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and governance, and its funding cut could disrupt services and development efforts.

While increased remittances and aid from other donor countries may offset some losses, Fitch stated they would not fully compensate for the sharp decline.

Despite the expected drop in US aid, Ghana’s external stability is projected to be stronger in 2025 compared to the previous five years.

“The nation’s reserve position experienced a considerable weakening between 2021 and 2023, primarily driven by rapid outflows from the capital and financial accounts,” the report noted.

Fitch attributed this to global economic uncertainties following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, interest rate hikes in developed economies, and investor concerns over Ghana’s rising debt burden.

However, Ghana’s gross international reserves showed recovery in 2024, reaching USD 6.4 billion by December, the highest in three years.

“This improvement has been supported by a substantial current account surplus, continued disbursements from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and a decrease in financial outflows,” the agency explained.

Fitch expects this positive trend in reserves to continue in the coming months.

Investor confidence, strengthened by Ghana’s completed debt restructuring, is expected to drive capital inflows.

Combined with a sustained current account surplus, international reserves are forecast to reach USD 8.8 billion by the end of 2025, providing approximately 3.5 months of import cover.

A Plus reportedly removed from Majority Caucus WhatsApp Platform following feud with AG Ayine

MP for Gomoa Central, A Plus has been reportedly removed from the Majority Caucus page MP for Gomoa Central, A Plus has been reportedly removed from the Majority Caucus page

The Host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has alleged that the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has been removed from a WhatsApp platform meant for members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

Reacting to a question by a viewer during the Thursday, May 1, 2025, edition of his show, Adom-Otchere said his checks indicate the independent Member of Parliament has been removed from the social media group meant for Majority MPs.

“Yes, that’s correct. We checked, and A Plus has been removed. It’s very true,” he stated.

The reported removal comes on the back of a recent feud between the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, and the MP.

During a press conference on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Dr Dominic Ayine responded to claims made by A Plus, who had accused him of corruption in an earlier social media post.

A Plus alleged on Facebook that Dr Ayine manipulated the drafting and passage of the Sanitation and Pollution Levy in 2021 for personal gain while in opposition.

He further claimed that Dr Ayine also restructured the leadership of a parliamentary committee to benefit a close associate.

However, Dr Ayine vehemently denied the accusations, describing them as baseless and challenging A Plus to provide evidence.

According to recent statistics, the Ashanti Region followed closely with 1,145 fires, while the Eastern Region ranked third with 648 fires, and the North East Region reporting the lowest number, with 16 fires.

In a press release dated May 1, 2025, a comparative analysis of fire data from January to December 2023 and 2024 revealed a decrease in domestic fires by 3%, from 41.5% in 2023 to 38.5% in 2024.

However, increases were recorded in bushfires, commercial fires, electrical installation fires, and other categories, the report added.

“The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of fires with 1309 incidents. The Ashanti Region followed in the second row with 1145 fires. Eastern Region chalked third with 648 fires. The North East Region had the lowest number with 16 fires,” the report said.

The statistics also highlighted the need for continued fire safety awareness and prevention efforts, particularly in high-risk regions and categories.

“Comparing the data for January to December 2023 and 2024, Domestic fires significantly decreased by 3%, from 41.5% in 2023 to 38.5% in 2024. Commercial fires slightly increased by 0.3%, from 16% in 2023 to 16.3% in 2024. Bushfires increased by 1.4%, from 11.9% in 2023 to 13.3% in 2024. Industrial fires there was no change in the proportion of industrial fire cases, with both 2023 and 2024 recording 0.4% of total incidents”, it added.

The GNFS has since urged authorities and stakeholders to take note of these trends and develop targeted strategies to mitigate fire incidents.

Kofi Jumah took GH¢40,000 weekly allowance – Deputy GIHOC CEO alleges

Former CEO of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah Former CEO of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Magdalene Ndamley, has exposed alleged corrupt activities at the company.

Speaking in an interview on Radio XYZ on May 2, 2025, Ndamley claimed that the company had collapsed because both staff and management were looting its resources indiscriminately.

She alleged that the former CEO of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, allocated to himself a weekly allowance of GH¢40,000.

She also accused him of incurring massive debts due to excessive borrowing, which has now plunged the company into financial distress.

“You couldn’t challenge him on financial matters. We have called him about the official car, and he says he won’t return it because GIHOC owes him,” she said.

“This man has plunged GIHOC into huge debts. Every Friday, he instructed that GH¢40,000 be handed to him. He was already receiving a fuel allowance and his regular salary, yet he demanded an additional envelope of GH¢40,000 every Friday at 2:00 p.m. Even when he was not at work, the amount was sent to him via mobile money,” she added, speaking in Twi.

Ndamley’s revelations follow President John Dramani Mahama’s expression of shock at GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited’s financial woes, questioning how an alcohol-producing company could be running losses amid high local demand.

Speaking during the May Day celebrations at Independence Square on Thursday, May 1, 2025, President Mahama cited data showing GIHOC made losses in both 2022 and 2023.

“How can you sell alcohol and be in debt? When I was president, GIHOC was profitable. Ghanaians drink when they’re happy and when they’re sad. So how does an alcohol manufacturer run at a loss?” he asked.

He called for improved accountability in state-owned enterprises and used GIHOC as a case study of poor management practices.

Earlier, on March 13, 2025, Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson revealed that GIHOC Distilleries posted a loss of GH¢25.1 million in 2022 and GH¢25.5 million in 2023.

South African woman guilty of kidnapping and trafficking daughter aged 6

0

Joshlin Smith has not been found more than a year after she went missing Joshlin Smith has not been found more than a year after she went missing

The mother of a South African girl, who disappeared aged six more than a year ago, has been convicted of kidnapping and trafficking her daughter.

Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their friend Steveno van Rhyn were arrested after Smith’s daughter, Joshlin, went missing from outside her home in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, in February last year.

Appollis and Van Rhyn were also found guilty on Friday of kidnapping and trafficking Joshlin. All three had previously pleaded not guilty to to these charges.

Joshlin’s disappearance sent shockwaves across South Africa and despite a highly publicised search for her, she is yet to be found.

During the trial, held in March, prosecutors accused Smith of having “sold, delivered or exchanged” Joshlin and then lied about her disappearance.

Smith wiped tears from her eyes when the guilty verdict was read, while Van Rhyn inexplicably broke into a smile.

Applause rippled through the packed court room and some onlookers began to cry.

The three could face life in prison – a date for sentencing is yet to be set.

In a statement following the judgment, the police said they would continue in their search for Joshlin.

The trial was held in Saldanha’s Multipurpose Centre to “ensure the community has access” to proceedings, Judge Nathan Erasmus, who presided over the case, said previously.

Ahead of the verdict, nearby roads had been closed, while police officers were deployed in and around the centre.

The trial captivated South Africa, with witnesses and prosecutors making a number of shocking allegations.

The most explosive came from Lourentia Lombaard, a friend and neighbour of Smith who turned state witness.

Ms Lombaard alleged that Smith told her she had done “something silly” and sold Joshlin to a traditional healer, known in South Africa as a “sangoma”.

The “person who [allegedly took] Joshlin wanted her for her eyes and skin”, Ms Lombaard told the court.

A local pastor testified that in 2023, he had heard Smith – a mother of three – talk of selling her children for 20,000 rand ($1,100; £850) each, though she had said she was willing to accept a lower figure of $275.

Joshlin’s teacher then alleged in court that Smith had told her during the search that her daughter was already “on a ship, inside a container, and they were on the way to West Africa”.

Smith’s lawyer, Rinesh Sivnarain, cast doubt on these allegations. He cited inconsistencies – recognised by the prosecution – in Ms Lombaard’s remarks and suggested she was an “opportunist”.

Smith, Appollis and Van Rhyn chose not to call any witnesses in their defence and did not take the stand during the trial.

Sangomas are legally recognised in South Africa under the Traditional Health Practitioners Act of 2007, alongside herbalists, traditional birth attendants and traditional surgeons.

Some charlatans are involved in unscrupulous traditional so-called cures, and have been known to sell good luck charms that involve body parts.

The allegation that Smith had discussed selling her daughter and had issues with drugs has prompted conversations about the vulnerability of children, particularly in South Africa’s poor communities.

In Joshlin’s community of Middelpos, parents have been telling local media that more than a year after the young girl’s disappearance, they are still concerned for their own children’s safety.

Several shocking allegations were made against Kelly Smith, Joshlin’s mother, during the trial

Ghanaian musicians are the most miserable in the world – Dada KD laments

Veteran highlife musician Dada KD has poured out his frustrations over the state of the Ghanaian music industry, lamenting that local artistes are among the most miserable in the world.

Speaking passionately, the “Fathia Fata Nkrumah” hitmaker revealed that despite his decades of contribution to music, he still does not own a car, a situation he attributes to the broken systems that fail to reward musicians adequately.

According to him, while musicians in the West continue to enjoy posthumous royalties and see their families benefit from their legacies, Ghanaian artistes are barely recognised, let alone compensated.

He cited the global reverence still accorded to legends like Michael Jackson as a sharp contrast to the neglect faced by Ghanaian music icons.

He bemoaned the lack of proper royalty systems and accused Ghamro of being largely ineffective, leaving artistes to struggle despite the relevance of their music.

Dada KD, whose songs are still played on radio stations across the country, believes the system has failed many talented individuals.

Despite the hardship, he remains hopeful, believing that one day he will reap the fruits of his investment in music.

“Buying cars and building houses should be a bonus that comes with the work, but not everyone is fortunate. I believe my time will come, and I’ll get the Range Rover of my dreams.”

You’re planting the idea – Ayariga blasts Afenyo-Markin over third term claims

0

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has firmly rejected claims that President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are laying the groundwork for an unconstitutional third term in office.

Speaking in an interview on Citi Prime News, Ayariga dismissed Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s suggestion that President Mahama’s recent nomination of seven Supreme Court judges is part of a long-planned “third term agenda.”

GoldBod Extends Licence Deadline For Gold Dealers

0

Sammy Gyamfi

The Ghana Gold Board has extended the deadline for gold dealers holding old licences issued by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to reapply under the new licensing regime.

The new deadline is now set for May 21, 2025, offering dealers an additional three weeks to complete the reapplication process.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, April 30, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, made it clear that this would be the final extension.

“We are giving you another three weeks. We believe that this is fair, and this timeframe should be enough for anybody who is serious about applying for a GoldBod licence,” he stated.

He urged all gold dealers to visit the official GoldBod website to complete their applications, adding that the Board had already outlined the steps in a press release issued on March 23.

“In our press release on March 23, we explained the processes involved in securing a GoldBod licence,” he said. “If you want a licence, you must go onto the website of GoldBod to apply.”

The new licensing regime is part of efforts by the Ghana Gold Board to regulate the gold trade more effectively and ensure transparency in mineral transactions across the country.

Nandom Paramount Chief rallies support for development

0

The Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area in the Upper West Region, Naa Professor Edmund Nwinyem Delle Chiir VIII, is rallying support from natives outside the traditional area for development.

As a start, he is in the Greater Accra Region, as part of a tour in the southern sector of the country, to meet with his sub-chiefs and other elders from the traditional area who are based in Accra to dialogue with them and, together, strategise the way forward for the development of the area.

Naa Prof. Chiir VIII said the world over, all developments in various areas were not championed by the people living in those areas, but by those in the diaspora, who might have learnt some innovative ideas to help develop the area.

Knowledge sharing

“So, I thought about it and, with Accra being the biggest city, where we have a number of our sons and daughters, I came here to meet with all the sub-chiefs under one roof for us to put our heads together to see what we can do for the area,” he explained.

Naa Prof. Chiir VIII expressed concern that even though the area could boast of a number of intellectuals, “there is very little to show on the ground”.

“So, I want to stimulate this discussion, to see what we can do to develop the area,” he explained, adding that there were a number of developmental challenges in the area and it was only knowledge sharing and sacrifices that could spur development in the area.

The Paramount Chief called for a united front to pull resources together to push for the development of Nandom, explaining that the current state of Nandom did not benefit it as a place that had produced prominent people, including two cardinals and two Chiefs of Naval Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

“Nandom is a unique town and I am very proud to be alive to witness the town produce the two cardinals and Rear Admirals, with Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing as the current Chief of Naval Staff,” Naa Prof Chiir VIII said.

Strategic development plan

For his part, the Member of Parliament for the Nandom Constituency, Richard Kuuire, acknowledged the challenges confronting the area but pleaded with the people to exercise patience as the government worked to address them.

He said the Nandom District Assembly had a comprehensive strategic development plan, which was developed about four years ago, awaiting implementation, and appealed to citizens of the area to put aside partisan politics for the sake of development.

Mr Kuuire explained that with the overwhelming endorsement of the President’s nominee as the District Chief Executive, all such documents would be revisited and synchronised as a blueprint for the area.

Big Push

He revealed that the government had plans for the district, saying, for instance, that according to the NDC manifesto, the government was to use the Big Push as promised to construct the road from Techiman through to Hamile using different lots, which would cover the Nandom District.

He also announced that the government had plans to construct the Kaa Baa River, which had been a major headache for the district over decades and was hopeful that when completed, most of the youth, who often travelled down south during the dry season, would stay back to engage in vegetable cultivation.

Unite for development

Rear Admiral Bessing, in a message, was grateful to God for lifting him to his current position and also thanked the Paramount Chief for his good intentions for the traditional area.

He also advised citizens in the area to put aside all forms of divisions as a result of partisan politics and unite to realise the overall development of the area.

The Naval Chief reminded the sub-chiefs that the development of the Nandom traditional area was not the sole responsibility of the Paramount Chief or the MP of Nandom, but a collective responsibility of all, urging natives with links outside and high places to use those contacts to bring development to the area.

Speak truth to power even when data is uncomfortable

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called for national statistics and data disseminated by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to remain factual, credible, and free from manipulation.

He issued the directive during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, held at the Jubilee House on Friday, May 2.

The President highlighted the role accurate data plays in development and decision-making, stressing that the integrity of national data must be protected at all costs.

He further urged the new Statistician to resist any pressure that could compromise the objectivity of the service’s output.

Mahama urged the new statistician to speak truth to power even when the data is uncomfortable.

“Statistical integrity is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. Citizens must believe that the numbers published by the service are objective and factual and are free from political interference.

“Investors must be assured that Ghana’s macroeconomic data is credible. Development partners must know that our results framework are measurable and verifiable.

He added, “I urge the new statistician to lead with courage and impartiality, to speak truth to power even when the data is uncomfortable. Work closely with stakeholders, ministries, academia, civil society organizations, and the private sector to strengthen the culture of data use across government.

“Under this administration, we’re building a governance model anchored in transparency, performance, and accountability. From health, education, and agriculture to urban planning, we need timely and disaggregated data to guide implementation, to measure results and correct our course when necessary.”

In his remarks, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu stated that the Ghana Statistical Service would adopt technology-driven approaches to meet data needs and enhance efficiency.

“We are committed to delivering credible, timely, and relevant data to support our macroeconomic stabilization programme and our socioeconomic development agenda, including flagship initiatives we’ve introduced such as the 24-hour economic policy, the agriculture for transformation agenda, the Adwumawura programme, the national apprenticeship programme, the national coders programme, and the anti-corruption drive as we just emphasized. Beyond this, we will actively anticipate and respond to the emerging data needs of a dynamic economy and ambitious, forward-looking people,” he said.

He added that the service would fast-track the release of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data and introduce GDP estimates at the regional level to better inform localised development strategies.

“Currently, inflation ends at the regional level. This will support the decentralisation agenda of the government and will inform inflation policy at the district level. And three, on prices, we’ll produce a CPI and inflation data on rural rural-urban basis to get a better appreciation of inflation from the rural-urban perspective.

“Your Excellency, on economic activities, we will, one, fast-track the rebasing of GDP data to make our GDP statistics more accurate and relevant. We will call for institutionalisation of rebasing of our GDP every five years to make our GDP data more relevant and to meet global standards,” he stated.

Group writes to AU in solidarity with Cuba

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, May 02, GNA – Some civil society groups and institutions have written to the African Union Commission to officially recognise Cuba as the union’s Honorary Development Partner in acknowledgement of its unmatched contributions to Africa’s liberation and progress.

The groups included the Afrikan Continental Union Consult (ACUC), the Pan Afrikan Center of Namibia (PACON), Asociacion Por La Solidaridad Y Amistad Con Cuba-Burkina Faso (ASAC-BF), Ghana-Cuba Friendship Association (GHACHUFA), Congolese Renaissance Movement (CRM), and Poble Íntegre, Spain.

Others are Bloc Populaire Africain pour la souveraineté du Congo – BPASCO, All African People’s Organization (AAPO), Nigeria, Organización de Aliados Estratégicos de Desarrollo Económico, Social, Sustentable y Cultural de Africa (OSAESSDA), Angola, National Movement for Better Nigeria, Communist Party Marxist – Kenya (CPM-K), and others.

In a communique copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tema, they declared that the African Union Commission should convene an extraordinary session to address the humanitarian and diplomatic implications of the economic embargo unilaterally imposed on the Republic of Cuba by the United States of America and to issue a strong continental appeal to the United Nations and the United States Government to lift the embargo.

“We, the undersigned, acting in consciousness of our shared history, mutual struggles, and the enduring values of South-South Cooperation, issue this solemn and urgent communiqué in recognition of the pivotal role played by the Republic of Cuba in Africa’s development and liberation journey.”

They also called for the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between African nations and Cuba, expanding scholarship opportunities, technical exchange, trade partnerships, and health missions in a manner that affirms reciprocal solidarity.

The groups also called on the AU to establish an annual “Africa-Cuba Solidarity Week” to be commemorated across member states in honour of its shared history, heroes, and hope for a just world order.

“Africa remembers. Africa does not forget. As beneficiaries of Cuba’s sweat, sacrifice, and solidarity, it is our moral and diplomatic obligation to rise now—not tomorrow, not in whispers, but in firm international conviction—to defend the sovereignty and dignity of the Republic of Cuba. Cuba stood with Africa. Now, Africa must stand with Cuba,” it added.

They recognised that Cuba has, over the past six decades, offered professional training, medical services, and technical assistance to thousands of African citizens in critical sectors including health, agriculture, engineering, information technology, and education.

According to them, the Cuban doctors, engineers, and educators have served with humility and excellence across African countries, often in rural, underserved, and post-conflict areas where few others dared to go.

They added that Cuba sacrificed its sons and daughters in the heroic battlefields of Cuito Cuanavale and beyond, standing firm with Africa against colonialism and apartheid.

Some of the Under-20 players

THE CONFEDERATION of African Football (CAF) has officially released Ghana’s final squad list for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as the Black Satellites gear up to begin their campaign in Egypt.

Head coach Desmond Ofei has been overseeing final preparations in Egypt, where the team has been training and acclimatising ahead of their Group C opener against DR Congo on Friday, May 2. Mr. Ofei, who also serves as an assistant coach for the Black Stars, is aiming to lead the team to a successful tournament and ultimately qualify for the U-20 World Cup later this year.

Despite their intensive preparation, the camp has faced some logistical setbacks, with reports indicating that a few selected players have yet to join the squad at their base in Egypt. However, team officials remain optimistic that the full contingent will be present before the opening fixture.

The 26-man squad features a mix of local and foreign-based players, including talents from clubs across Europe, North America, and Ghana’s domestic leagues. Notable inclusions are Aziz Issah of Barcelona B, Andrews Adjabeng of Real Sociedad C, and George Tei Nagadzi of Vision FC.

Ghana, a four-time U-20 AFCON champion, will be hoping to make a strong impression in Egypt as they chase continental glory and a spot on the world stage.

Sexual incompatibility one of the biggest causes of divorce, adultery

Veteran Highlife musician, Akosua Agyapong Veteran Highlife musician, Akosua Agyapong

Veteran Highlife musician Akosua Agyapong has defended her stance on premarital sex, stating that sexual compatibility is a key factor in preventing divorce and adultery.

One would recall that after an earlier interview with Joy FM, Agyapong drew backlash on social media after advising couples to have sex before marriage.

Clarifying her stance In an interview with Onua FM, Agyapong argued that many marriages fail due to sexual incompatibility, leading to frustration and adultery.

“The reason I said that was because, according to the Bible, God does not like adultery and divorce. And the major vow of marriage is, for better or for worse, till death do us part

“If you look at one of the causes of divorce, it is sexual incompatibility; people marry people they do not really know on a sexual level,” she said.

She added that couples who are about to get married should be aware of their sexual compatibility to avoid being frustrated in marriage.

“So if you’re about to get married, and both families know you’re about to get married and have given their blessings. What is wrong with it?

“This is someone you are about to be with for better or for worse. So if a man who likes sex marries a woman who does not like sex. He would be frustrated and end up committing adultery,” she said.

How Adu Boahene, wife and banker orchestrated grand theft scheme to siphon over GH¢111m

0

Kwabene Adu Boahene(L), Angela Adjei-Boateng (R) and two others are already facing 11 charges Kwabene Adu Boahene(L), Angela Adjei-Boateng (R) and two others are already facing 11 charges

Details from a press conference and court documents filed by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, have revealed an alleged multi-million cedi theft scheme involving a former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng.

According to the Attorney General, the couple is accused of orchestrating a complex criminal enterprise that siphoned approximately GH¢111 million of state funds through two separate scandals.

They have been charged alongside a third person, Mildred Donkor, and their company, Advantage Solutions Limited.

$7 million cybersecurity scandal

In the first case, the Attorney General alleges that Mr Adu Boahene, while serving as Director of the NSB, signed a $7 million contract on January 30, 2020, with RLC Holdings Limited, an Israeli company, for the purchase of cyber defense system software.

“Instead of paying the full amount to the intended vendor, only $1.75 million was transferred. The remaining GH¢39.5 million (approx. $5.25 million) was diverted to BNC Communications Bureau Limited, a private company owned by the couple.

“On February 6, 2020, he then transferred an initial amount of GH¢27.1 million from the NSB account at Fidelity Bank to a private BNC account at UMB. Official documentation on the transfer reveals that the amount was for the payment of cyber defense system software. He transferred the money to his private company,” Dr Ayine stated at the press briefing.

Mildred Donkor’s alleged involvement

Mildred Donkor, the third accused, is a former UMB Bank relationship officer for the couple and their company, BNC.

Court filings show she also served as a director for Advantage Solutions Limited, which was allegedly used as a holding company to launder the stolen funds.

“The monies which A1 and A2 moved from the National BNC bank account into the Private BNC’s bank account were paid through a complex web of companies, ultimately owned by A4 (Advantage Solutions),” the AG’s court filing states.

Investigations further revealed that the stolen funds were used to acquire properties in Accra, Kumasi, and London, luxury vehicles, and to fund the couple’s lavish lifestyle.

Despite her denials, Donkor was found to be a director in all companies used in the scheme and actively participated in the day-to-day operations.

Charges filed

The accused face a total of 11 counts in the cybersecurity case.

• Kwabena Adu Boahene: Stealing, defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, using public office for profit, and money laundering.

• Angela Adjei-Boateng: Conspiracy to steal, conspiracy to commit a crime using public office for profit, and money laundering.

• Mildred Donkor: Conspiracy to commit money laundering and money laundering.

• Advantage Solutions Limited: Conspiracy to commit money laundering and money laundering.

Second Scandal: GH¢1.5 million monthly loot from Ghana Water Company

In a separate scheme uncovered by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the AG revealed that Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) made monthly payments of up to GH¢1.5 million to Mr. Adu Boahene’s private company, BNC Communications Bureau Limited, for services that were supposed to be delivered by the NSB, a government agency.

“The contract documents stipulated that Ghana Water pay GH¢650,000 every two weeks to the Bureau of National Communications. However, Mr Adu Boahene provided the account details of his private company,” Dr Ayine explained.

Over time, GWCL paid over GH¢62 million to the private company, under the guise of internet service provisions by a state agency.

According to the AG, these payments were made without any verifiable evidence of services rendered.

Dr Ayine confirmed that separate charges will be filed in the coming weeks regarding this second scheme.

COCOBOD probes misuse of $263 million cocoa loan under previous management

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) headquarters The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) headquarters

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is investigating how a $263 million loan, meant for cocoa farm rehabilitation, was used under previous management.

The new Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr Randy Abbey, expressed concern that the funds were intended to rehabilitate 156,000 hectares of cocoa farms damaged by disease. However, only 40,000 hectares were reportedly rehabilitated.

Speaking at a meeting with cocoa farmers in Nkawie, in the Ashanti Region, Dr Abbey said that if the full 156,000 hectares had been restored, it could have added around 200,000 tonnes to Ghana’s cocoa production.

“We took all this money, and all we have to show is just 40,000 hectares completed,” he said, expressing disappointment.

According to him, about 40% of cocoa farms had been affected by disease, prompting COCOBOD to launch the rehabilitation programme.

While the new management supports the initiative, it is questioning how the project was executed.

Dr Abbey revealed that an additional GH¢700 million was also spent on the same project.

He said the matter has now been referred to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

“It was a golden opportunity to improve the cocoa sector, and it’s sad to see it wasted,” he added.

To help improve cocoa production, COCOBOD is currently working to rehabilitate another 21,000 hectares of farms.

Dr. Abbey affirmed his commitment to completing this effort and returning the affected farms to Ghana’s productive cocoa stock.

He also disclosed that, upon assuming office, the new administration discovered road contracts worth GH¢21 billion had been signed, along with GH¢4.4 billion in debts.

COCOBOD says it will continue efforts to boost cocoa production and ensure the proper use of funds in future projects.

Diaby collapsed suddenly on the pitch and received immediate medical attention.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Dijon, where he remained under intensive care for several days.

Despite efforts to save him, the teenager passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

“It is with immense sorrow that we announce the tragic death of our dear Ousmane Diaby. He suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch, was resuscitated, and rushed to Dijon hospital.

“After several days of struggling, Ousmane breathed his last this Wednesday,” his club said in a statement.

Aubervilliers has launched a fundraiser to support Diaby’s funeral and repatriation costs, raising nearly €10,000 (£7,600) so far.

The club described him as “a child with a huge heart and exemplary upbringing” who helped his mother daily and volunteered with the younger players, particularly the Under-9s. “Always smiling, helpful, and respectful, he left an indelible mark on our lives.”

French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo has also extended his most sincere condolences to Diaby’s family and the club.

Meta threatens to cut off Facebook in Nigeria over huge fines

0

People in Nigeria may lose access to Facebook and Instagram People in Nigeria may lose access to Facebook and Instagram

People in Nigeria may lose access to Facebook and Instagram after parent company Meta said it faced large fines and “unrealistic” regulatory demands from the Nigerian authorities.

Last year, three Nigerian oversight agencies imposed fines on the US-based social media giant totalling more than $290m (£218m) for violating various laws and regulations.

Meta was unsuccessful in a recent attempt to challenge the decisions in the federal high court in Abuja.

“The applicant may be forced to effectively shut down the Facebook and Instagram services in Nigeria in order to mitigate the risk of enforcement measures,” the company said in the court papers.

Meta also owns WhatsApp, but it did not mention the messaging service in its statement.

The high court has given the company until the end of June to pay the fines.

The BBC has asked Meta to outline what its next steps will be but has not yet received a response.

Facebook is by far the most popular social media platform in Nigeria and is used by tens of millions in the country for daily communication and sharing news. It is also a vital tool for many of Nigeria’s small online businesses.

In July last year, Meta was asked to pay three fines:

.The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) imposed a $220m fine for alleged anti-competitive practices

.The advertising regulator fined the company $37.5m over unapproved advertising

.And the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) alleged Meta had violated data privacy laws and fined it $32.8m.

FCCPC chief executive officer Adamu Abdullahi said investigations carried out in conjunction with the data commission between May 2021 and December 2023 revealed “invasive practices against data subjects/consumers in Nigeria” but was not specific about what these were.

In its court submission, Meta said its “primary concern” was with the data commission, which it accused of “misinterpreting” data privacy laws.

Specifically, the commission has demanded that Meta seek prior approval before transferring any personal data out of Nigeria – a condition that Meta called “unrealistic”.

The data commission also imposed other demands.

Meta was told it must provide an icon linking to educational videos about data privacy risks. This would be content created in collaboration with government-approved educational institutions and non-profit organisations.

The NDPC insisted that these videos highlight the dangers of “manipulative and unfair data processing” that could expose Nigerian users to health and financial risks.

Meta described the NDPC’s demands as unfeasible, saying that the agency has failed to “properly interpret the laws guiding data privacy”.

‘I’m left with GH¢3,850 more to go’ – Sarkodie reacts to Bishop Owusu’s GH¢25K target for 25-year-olds

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has reacted in a sarcastic manner to a recent comment by the senior pastor of Pottersville Church International, Bishop Samuel Owusu, who claimed that 25-year-olds should have at least GH¢25,000 in their bank accounts.

In an interview on Onua TV on May 1, 2025, Bishop Owusu emphatically said: “If you are a young man, think about your future because you will grow old one day…At the age of 25, you should have at least GH¢25,000 in your bank account.”

Support Mahama in galamsey fight – Stephen Amoah urges Ghanaians

0

The Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has called on Ghanaians to support President John Dramani Mahama in winning the galamsey fight.

According to Dr. Amoah, the fight against illegal mining must not be a sole prerogative of the government but a concerted effort to tackle the menace, which continues to devastate the environment.

Speaking at Leadership Conclave on the theme, “Building The Ghana We Want: The Role of Students at Christian Service University in Kumasi, on Thursday, May 1, he urged the youth, especially students, to actively get involved in nation-building.

“Nobody will build your country for you. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, or former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cannot build this country without your contribution, involvement, and cooperation. Don’t deceive yourselves, leadership is not just about the President, as young as you are, you should be ready to contribute your quota to building this country.

He added, “Before former President Akufo-Addo started the fight against illegal mining, he came to meet it same way as the current President. I don’t think President Mahama or former President Akufo-Addo will be happy to see people destroying our water bodies.

“Nana Addo resourced the military to fight illegal mining, as to whether they did the job right or not, or whether the people involved yielded to the call or not. Or do you think the former President or the country President can go to the River Pra or Offin at night to fight illegal mining, let’s be real.”

On the cancellation of the Electronic Levy by the government, he described the move as a good one, but lamented the several taxes introduced.

“Pay taxes, you will say no, but you want the government to construct all the roads,” he further added.

He further highlighted the crucial role young people and students play in building a nation, emphasising the need for a sustainable economy, a good health system, and others.

The Nhyiaeso MP further stressed that individual contribution and performance are key to a nation’s development, stating some variables that determine performance, such as ability, technical skill and dexterity.

He encouraged students and young people to develop these skills to make a meaningful impact on the country’s development.

Dr. Amoah made a passionate appeal, urging students to take ownership of their role in nation-building, warning that a nation that neglects the contribution of its youth has no future.

He also added that the future of Ghana and other nations depends on the active participation and contribution of the youth.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) President of Christian Service University, Richard Owusu, also called on the youth to embrace opportunities to equip themselves to take leadership roles in the future.

“We in the private tertiary are shy to take the available opportunities that will equip us to be leaders in the future. We fear that doing other curricular activities will affect our academic performance,” he stated.

‘Strive for excellence and awards would come later’

Ghanaian reggae musician, Rocky Dawuni Ghanaian reggae musician, Rocky Dawuni

Renowned Ghanaian reggae musician, Rocky Dawuni has called on musicians in the country to focus on producing quality music instead of awards.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie during the launch of the ‘Black Star Experience’ on May 1, 2025, Rocky Dawuni emphasised that if musicians focus on producing great music they won’t struggle to win awards.

He explained that awards won based on quality outputs are well deserved.

“For have to aspire for the greatness… Everybody’s job is your vision, and as a musician, I don’t believe that your vision should be in terms of accolades or awards but excellence. Everybody should strive for excellence. If the awards come based on excellence then it is well deserved,” he said.

The musician further noted that his vision is for his music to resonate with fans globally and not only in Africa or Ghana.

“But in the long run, everybody has their path, and I don’t feel I have to define that for every musician. I want my music not to be only with my people or Africans but around the world. Everyone has the right to their vision.

“Ghana is the leader and Ghana will continue to be the leader and innovator and we don’t need awards to prove that,” he added.

Ghana, Algeria sign visa waiver deal to boost bilateral ties

The agreement was signed during an official visit to Algiers by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs The agreement was signed during an official visit to Algiers by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs

Ghana and Algeria have signed a visa waiver agreement to strengthen their partnership and boost cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement was signed during an official visit to Algiers by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. It means that citizens of both countries can now travel between Ghana and Algeria without needing a visa.

The announcement followed important meetings with Algeria’s President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf.

As part of the visit, both countries also agreed to increase collaboration in several areas. These include offering more scholarships for Ghanaian students in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering.

Other key plans from the visit include launching a direct flight between Accra and Algiers, establishing a partnership in oil and gas, and enhancing cooperation in security and intelligence sharing. Ghana and Algeria also agreed to restart their Joint Economic Cooperation program.

Officials say the visit has helped to renew the strong friendship between Ghana and Algeria, which dates back to the early years following both nations’ independence.

Blackmail, Sextortion losses near GH¢500,000 in early 2025 – CSA

0

Financial losses from online blackmail and sextortion in Ghana have surged to GH¢499,044 in the first four months of 2025, according to data from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA).

This marks a significant jump from the GH¢103,663 recorded during the same period in 2024, highlighting the growing economic impact of increasingly sophisticated cybercriminals.

The CSA’s latest public alert noted a slight increase in reported cases between January and April 2025 compared to the 155 cases documented in the same timeframe last year.

The perpetrators typically use fake social media accounts, often featuring attractive profile images, to lure victims into romantic conversations. After building trust, they manipulate victims into sharing explicit content, which is then used for extortion.

Victims are usually forced to pay ransoms via mobile money under threats that compromising images or videos will be posted online. However, the CSA warns that payments often do not stop the blackmail. In many cases, victims continue to receive threats even after complying.

To avoid detection, attackers often shift conversations to encrypted platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.

The CSA is urging the public to remain vigilant—avoid engaging with unfamiliar online profiles, never share intimate content online, and report suspicious activity through its 24-hour cybersecurity support channels.

A legacy of service and PR excellence

0

After 31 years of distinguished service, Brigadier-General Quashie officially retired from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), marking the end of a remarkable career that has been characterized by both military prowess and unparalleled professionalism in communication.

He leaves behind not just a legacy of military achievements but a profound impact on the way the Armed Forces interact with the public.

It’s with great admiration and deep respect that I reflect on the retirement of Brigadier-General Eric Aggrey Quashie, a man whose service to the GAF and his exemplary leadership in the military’s public relations department will forever be remembered.

A legacy of service to Ghana

Brigadier-General Quashie’s journey with the Ghana Armed Forces began three decades ago.

Throughout his illustrious career, he served in various capacities and earned the respect of his peers, subordinates, and the public alike.

His strength as a military officer was undeniable, but it was his role as a communicator and leader of the GAF Public Relations (PR) Directorate that truly set him apart.

For 10 years, he led the PR outfit with distinction, transforming how the Armed Forces communicated with the public.

His tenure as the head of the directorate marked a turning point for the GAF, moving from a military institution primarily concerned with internal affairs to a more transparent and outward-facing entity that bridged the gap between the military and the Ghanaian people.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Brigadier-General Quashie was the face of the GAF’s communication efforts, shaping the narrative and ensuring that the public was informed, engaged, and connected to the work of the Armed Forces.

Suffice it to say that he took some verbal bullets while doing this, but as the gallant soldier that he was, he took them in his stride and soldiered on.

A master of Public Relations: Bringing GAF closer to the people

What stands out most about Brigadier-General Quashie is his ability to blend his military discipline with a keen understanding of public relations.

He was more than just an officer – he was a consummate PR professional who understood the delicate balance of promoting the image of the military while maintaining its necessary confidentiality.

His ability to handle crises with grace, communicate effectively in times of conflict, and foster positive public relations with the media was second to none.

I had the privilege of working closely with him over the years, and I can say with certainty that Brigadier-General Quashie was a rare combination of military authority and PR acumen.

His proactive approach to communication was truly groundbreaking. He didn’t wait for the media to approach the GAF with questions or concerns – he went to them.

His strategy was simple but effective: stay ahead of the story, address issues before they became problems, and always maintain an open line of communication with the public.

Under his leadership, the GAF became more transparent, more approachable, and more respected than ever before.

He understood that in today’s world, the military must not only be capable in defense matters but also trustworthy and relatable in its dealings with the public.

His work fostered a sense of trust between the GAF and the Ghanaian people, reminding us all that the military is not a distant entity but a part of the community, there to protect and serve.

A man of character and integrity

Beyond his professional achievements, Brigadier-General Quashie is someone who commands respect simply by the way he carries himself.

As a leader, he exuded integrity, humility, and a sense of duty that inspired all who worked with him. He was approachable, understanding, and genuinely invested in the well-being of his colleagues and the soldiers under his command.

His leadership style was a fine balance of strength and kindness, earning him the admiration of both the senior leadership and the troops.

In every interaction, he showed the true meaning of service. His ability to listen, his commitment to the mission, and his unshakable sense of responsibility made him a role model for many, both in and out of the military.

Brigadier-General Quashie will be remembered not only for the milestones he achieved in his career but for the way he made people feel valued and heard.

A well-deserved retirement

As Brigadier-General Quashie embarks on his well-deserved retirement, it is impossible to ignore the mark he has left on the Ghana Armed Forces and the broader community.

While the military will no longer be guided by his steady hand in the PR Directorate, the lessons he instilled – of transparency, trust, and effective communication – will continue to shape the GAF for years to come.

Personally, I will always remember Brigadier-General Quashie not just for his professional excellence but for the warmth and humility he brought to everything he did.

He showed us all that leadership is not about position or title but about the impact you have on others.

His retirement marks the end of an era for the Ghana Armed Forces, but his legacy will endure.

Thank you, Brigadier-General Eric Aggrey Quashie, for your 31 years of service, for your extraordinary work in public relations, and for the positive impact you’ve made on the Ghana Armed Forces and the country at large.

Your legacy will live on, and you will always be respected and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing you.

In honouring him today, we celebrate not just the military officer, but the man – a true patriot who gave his all for Ghana.

Wishing Brigadier-General Quashie a fulfilling retirement filled with peace, joy, and continued service to his community.

I’m going to open the door for you, no one should close it again

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to make Ghana’s creative industry more accessible and inclusive, promising to break down barriers and empower all citizens to take part in building a culturally rich country.

Speaking at the launch of the ‘Black Star Experience’ on May 1, 2025, at the Black Stars Square, Mahama called on Ghanaians to embrace their identity, celebrate their culture, and collaborate in creating a vibrant future for the arts and creative sectors.

The Black Star Experience, part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto, is designed to position Ghana as the top cultural and tourism destination in Africa.

The programme features a year-long lineup of events, including street festivals, fashion shows, food festivals, and music competitions, all aimed at boosting the creative economy.

Addressing a crowd of creatives, cultural leaders, and policymakers, Mahama shared the vision of a future where artistic expression is no longer limited by bureaucracy or partisanship.

“As president, I’m going to open up the creative space for everyone. And once that door is opened, it should never be shut again,” he said.

The president encouraged the creative community to bring forth their ideas and innovations, assuring them of an open-door policy that supports artistic freedom and collaboration.

“This is something we’re doing together, every single one of us. So, bring your ideas, your talent, your energy. Let’s make this the beginning of something truly powerful,” he added.

Mahama further emphasised that the Black Star Experience will not be a political tool but a national legacy.

“This must outlive any government. Whether it’s NDC, NPP, CPP, or any other party, we are all Ghanaians. We are the Black Star, and we must all be proud of our culture and who we are,” he affirmed.

Let internal democracy prevail within the party

0

Kamal-Deen Abdullai, Deputy Communication Director of the NPP Kamal-Deen Abdullai, Deputy Communication Director of the NPP

The Deputy Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kamal-Deen Abdullai, has expressed concerns about the party’s internal dynamics, specifically referencing the “Thank You Tour” becoming a convention for party flagbearers.

Abdullai emphasised the need for a council of elders to ensure internal democracy prevails within the party.

“We have Council of Elders to make sure internal democracy prevails,” he stated.

He said this on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on May 2, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb, during which he highlighted the importance of maintaining party unity and democratic processes, particularly in the lead-up to key events or elections.

“Those who are not supposed to talk are talking. The Thank You Tour has become a convention for our flagbearers,” he indicated.

Abdullai also disclosed that a more structured approach to party governance, potentially to prevent internal conflicts and promote cohesion among members will make the party more appealing.

He acknowledged that the party has suffered a significant defeat, emphasising the need for introspection and collective problem-solving.

Abdullai further stressed that the party must come together to address the issues that led to the loss, adhering to its governing laws and regulations.

“It is not only the NPP that has suffered defeat. We have suffered a very huge defeat which requires us to sit and resolve it through the laws that govern the party,” he said.

How Adu Boahene, wife, and a banker orchestrated a GH¢111m grand theft scheme

0

Kwabene Adu Boahene, Angela Adjei-Boateng and two others are already facing 11 charges Kwabene Adu Boahene, Angela Adjei-Boateng and two others are already facing 11 charges

However, Mr. Adu Boahene provided the account details of his private company,” Dr Ayine explained.

Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and wife share emotional story of their autistic child

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella and his wife Claudia have disclosed that it hasn’t been easy raising their child Mateo, who happens to be autistic.

The Spanish defender stated that they realised their child was autistic at some point when he was enrolled in school, behaving differently from the other children.

The player, who was crying and wiping away tears while speaking, noted that they had to adapt to ways of catering for the child, as it requires much attention and care, adding that they didn’t anticipate having an autistic child.

“Our kid is autistic, but the parents aren’t ready for this, so we need to learn a lot. We always try to speak with him,” he said during an interview with Amazon Prime Video Sport.

Claudia revealed that handling Mateo has been challenging in terms of his sociability and feeding, thereby restricting their movements to take care of him.

“We saw that some things were different from other kids. We didn’t find too much help from the school, and we had our worst months. Every day, we went together to drop Mateo off while I was pregnant with Rio as well, and we came back home.

“It’s difficult to be in other places, with food. There was no school and therapy at some point, so it was hard for him. There are things we can’t do because of him,” she added.

NPP’s Current Judicial Objections Are Politically Motivated – Analyst

0

Political analyst Dr. Kwasi Amakye-Boateng has strongly criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its recent posture regarding judicial matters in Ghana, describing the party’s conduct as biased and self-interested.

According to him, the NPP’s reaction to recent developments, including President John Dramani Mahama’s judicial nominations, reveals a pattern of political expediency rather than national interest.

Fidelity Bank Launches Orange Inspire

Fidelity Bank

Julian Opuni

Fidelity Bank has unveiled a new initiative dubbed Orange Inspire, aimed at empowering young professionals and entrepreneurs with the tools, knowledge, and financial support needed to achieve personal and business growth.

The launch, which took place in Accra, marks a strategic move by the bank to strengthen its engagement with Ghanaian youth and build a future-ready customer base through mentorship, capacity-building, and tailored financial solutions.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, Julian Opuni, said Orange Inspire reflects the bank’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of Ghanaian leaders.

According to him, the Orange Inspire project, which is a Cultural and Creative Fund (FCCF) under its Fidelity Young Entrepreneurs Initiative, will directly support creative entrepreneurs with funding, training, and tools to grow.

Mr. Opuni said this is aimed at making a meaningful difference in an industry that has too often been overlooked by banks and policy makers alike.

He pointed out that the FCCF is designed for young creatives—men aged 40 and under, and women aged 45 and under—working in fields like visual arts, fashion, crafts, photography, animation, music, film, content creation, and performance.

The fund offers both grants and low-interest loans to help them turn their ideas into impactful businesses, he noted.

He disclosed that the funding structure has been thoughtfully designed, with tier one involving GH¢450,000 in grants awarded to five outstanding young creatives.

Winners in Artistic Expression and Creative Storytelling categories will each receive up to GH¢150,000.

Additionally, 20 incubated businesses will also be eligible for concessionary loans of up to GH¢200,000 at a 10% interest rate under the Fidelity Young Entrepreneurs Fund. Tier II provides up to GH¢1 million in concessionary financing for established creative projects.

“We know the creative sector comes with unique risks, but we also see huge opportunities. We’re not doing this because we have all the answers. We’re doing this because we believe in the talent and potential of Ghanaian creatives. And we want to work with them—and with partners—to build something that lasts,” Mr. Opuni said.

He said the fund’s support goes beyond just money, and it includes incubation, mentorship, and infrastructure development to help creatives build sustainable enterprises that can grow and compete —locally and globally.

Nana Yaa Afriyie Ofori-Koree, Head of Partnerships, Sustainability, and CSR, said this move is part of a larger vision: “We’ve done this before—last year with our GreenTech Innovation Challenge, where we invested over GH¢1.4 million in young entrepreneurs solving challenges in agriculture.

According to her, like that sector, the creative industry has enormous potential but limited support. FCCF is our way of changing that narrative.”

Zoomlion to take GHC888, sweepers get GHC420

Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited is facing renewed scrutiny over its proposed wage structure for sanitation workers under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

According to investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, Zoomlion’s pending proposal before the YEA allocates GHS1,308 per sweeper, with GHS888 retained by the company and only GHS420 designated for the workers.

Mahama not pursuing any ‘third term agenda’

0

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has dismissed allegations by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin that President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are pursuing a “third term agenda.”

Afenyo-Markin, on Thursday, May 1, alleged that the recent nomination of seven justices to the Supreme Court by President Mahama is part of a broader strategy to pave the way for his return to power beyond the constitutional limit.

“It is obvious that the bold attempts by the president to nominate, out of the blue, seven judges to the Supreme Court are the first major attempt at all that they have rehearsed — a third term agenda,” he claimed.

Responding to the claim on Citi Prime News on May 2, Mahama Ayariga rejected the assertion as baseless and politically motivated.

“I think he is the one who is putting the idea in the minds of Ghanaians. I am not sure I have heard Ghanaians having that discussion or even the strategists of the NDC having that conversation.

“He is the one putting this in the minds of Ghanaians,” he stated.

The Bawku Central MP explained that the notion of Mahama seeking a third term had surfaced even before he filed to contest the NDC flagbearer race ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“The conversation of him running for a third term even came up before he filed to contest as flagbearer of the NDC in the 2024 general election. Indeed, some people threatened to go to the Supreme Court to stop him from contesting because they thought he would contest for a third term,” he noted

Young Ghanaian Referees Shine At CAF African Schools Championship

0

The young referees

GHANA’S INVOLVEMENT in the recent CAF African Schools Football Championship extended beyond the pitch, as four young referees from the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) “Catch Them Young Referees” initiative made notable contributions to officiating duties.

Adongo Angelous Akurugu and Edmund Ofoe Tetteh officiated in the boys’ matches, while Sophia Azumah and Cynthia Asandem handled games in the girls’ competition. Among their standout roles, Akurugu took charge of the boys’ final between Senegal and Tanzania, and Azumah served as Assistant Referee 1 in the third-place match between Morocco and South Africa.

The GFA’s “Catch Them Young Refereeing” policy, introduced in 2020, targets the identification and development of talented referees aged 13 to 16. The programme equips them with the skills and values required for a successful refereeing career.

Since its inception, the initiative has trained over 150 young referees across Ghana. Many have gone on to officiate in national competitions, including the Women’s Division One League playoffs, regional Colts and Division Two and Three Leagues, the Division One League Super Cup, and the MTN FA Cup.

Adding to Ghana’s technical presence, retired referee Augustina Fugah played a key role as a fitness instructor during the championship, further demonstrating Ghana’s growing footprint in African football development.

GH¢499,000 lost in 2025 – Cyber Security Authority warns

0

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a public alert following a sharp rise in financial losses linked to online blackmail and sextortion in Ghana.

Between January and April 2025, the CSA recorded a slight increase in reported cases but a significant jump in financial losses, amounting to GH¢499,044—nearly five times the GH¢103,663 recorded over the same period in 2024.

According to the CSA, cybercriminals are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, including fake social media profiles and romantic scams, to lure victims. After gaining trust, the perpetrators solicit explicit content and later use it to extort money—often continuing their threats even after payments are made.

The CSA advises the public to avoid engaging with strangers online, especially those who quickly request intimate content. Victims are urged not to pay any ransom but instead preserve evidence and report incidents to the Authority.

The CSA also reminded Ghanaians to keep their social media accounts private, avoid storing nude content on their devices, and seek emotional support if they become victims.

Manessah petitions Mahama to terminate Zoomlion-YEA contract over alleged corruption

0

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to terminate the long-standing contract between the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 2, Mr Awuni called for an end to what he describes as a 19-year-old arrangement fraught with inefficiencies, poor accountability, and exploitation of sweepers.

Mr Awuni stated that under the most recent contract, which expired in September 2024, an amount of GH₵850 was allocated per sweeper.

However, he said Zoomlion retained GH₵600 of that sum, leaving the sweepers with just GH₵250 monthly.

According to the journalist, the contract also allowed Zoomlion to charge interest on delayed payments from the YEA, resulting in a reported GHS90 million interest claim in 2024 alone.

He noted that Zoomlion has since submitted a new proposal, currently under review at the YEA, seeking an increase in the allocation per sweeper to GHS1,308, saying that if approved, the company would keep GHS888 and pay sweepers GHS420 per month.

Manasseh questioned the lack of transparency surrounding the number of sweepers Zoomlion presents for payment.

“The YEA has no data to verify the 45,000 sweepers Zoomlion presents for payment every month, even after raising an alarm in 2018. The YEA said its headcount showed that 38,884 sweepers were on the ground, contrary to Zoomlion’s claim of 45,000. The YEA CEO, Justin Kodua Frimpong (the current NPP General Secretary), said Zoomlion failed to submit its payroll for verification when the YEA requested.

“In 2022, the YEA could not provide any data when the Accra Metropolitan Assembly complained in a letter that most sweepers had stopped working. Meanwhile, Zoomlion continued to bill the state for 45,000 people every month,” he said.

He also referenced the position of the immediate past YEA CEO, Kofi Baah Agyepong, who told the agency’s board that the contract should be scrapped, stating that the YEA could independently manage the sweeping module just as it does other employment schemes.

This, Mr Awuni stated, that in all the modules, YEA pays all its beneficiaries more than the sweepers, whose payment is routed through Zoomlion.

“I have proposed to the President that the contract be discontinued so that the assemblies and the YEA can supervise the sweepers. In this way, the assemblies can have direct control of the sweepers, who are paid with the assemblies’ share of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF),” Mr Awuni said.

“If Zoomlion is eliminated as the middleman, the sweepers will enjoy better wages and be motivated to show up and work to keep the nation clean.”

While calling for the termination of the sweeping module contract, Manasseh acknowledged the importance of maintaining Zoomlion’s separate Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP), which involves refuse transportation.

He noted that ending the SIP abruptly could result in sanitation problems, as some assemblies lack the waste trucks necessary for waste disposal due to large deductions from their budgets to fund the Zoomlion contracts.

Mr Awuni also reminded the President of the decisive steps he took in 2013 following investigations into the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA), which led to the cancellation of contracts, prosecutions, and passage of the YEA Act.

“With the documentary evidence I submitted with the petition, I am confident that the President will terminate the Zoomlion contract,” he said, noting it was the only GYEEDA-era agreement left untouched despite adverse findings in a report commissioned by the President himself.

You will not defame me for me to pay my own legal fees

Entertainment pundit and artiste manager, Bullgod Entertainment pundit and artiste manager, Bullgod

Entertainment pundit and artiste manager, Bullgod, has revealed that his legal team is pursuing payment of legal fees from dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, following a defamation case that was settled out of court.

The issue dates back to November 2022 when Shatta Wale accused Bullgod of having a hand in the death of Fennec Okyere, former manager of rapper Kwaw Kese.

The allegation, made publicly by Shatta Wale, sparked outrage and led Bullgod to file a defamation suit at the Accra High Court.

In the suit, Bullgod argued that Shatta Wale’s claims were false, injurious to his reputation and also insensitive, considering the murder case was still under investigation.

He sought legal redress and demanded the court declare the statements defamatory and malicious.

However, following interventions from key figures in the entertainment industry, both parties agreed to settle the matter outside of court.

As part of the settlement, Shatta Wale was to issue a formal apology and cover Bullgod’s legal expenses, which amounted to GH¢100,000.

Three years after the initial incident, Shatta Wale on April 30, 2025, wrote an official letter to apologise to Bullgod.

Bullgod reacting to the apology in an interview on JoyNews on May 2, 2025, he expressed appreciation for his legal team’s role in resolving the matter amicably.

He confirmed that although the apology has been received, the agreed legal fees have not yet been paid, and his lawyers are currently handling the matter.

“The original suit was a million Ghana cedis. When Shatta’s legal team came to say that they want to settle this out of court, I said I was looking for an apology and settlement of legal fees.

“So, the money involved in this matter was for my legal fees because you will not defame me for me to go and pay my own legal fees. If I am taking it out of court, at least the decent thing to do is to pay the legal fees which is supposed to be GH¢100,000 that will go to my lawyers,” Bullgod stated.

‘I will be surprised if Alan Kyerematen returns to NPP’ – Solomon Owusu

0

Solomon Owusu (L) and Alan Kyerematen Solomon Owusu (L) and Alan Kyerematen

A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has expressed skepticism about the possibility of his party’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Alan Kyerematen, rejoining the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating that such a move could come as a surprise to him.

Speaking in a recent interview on TV3, he stated that the call for the return of some persons expelled from the party is not sincere.

“I will be extremely surprised if Alan goes back to the NPP. He was part of the individuals who were unjustly hunted out of the party in 2015 under the very influence of those now preaching reconciliation.

“To now act as though unity matters is sad; it’s not genuine. I haven’t heard Alan speak to this. He hasn’t told me if he wants to return to the NPP, but I would be extremely surprised if he even considers it,” he stated.

According to him, those who once victimised others in the party now find themselves in similar situations.

“All of a sudden, Kennedy Agyapong comes in and says I want to be a president; because Alan is taking the grassroots; because the establishment realised that the only person that comes and destabilises Alan is Kennedy Agyapong, that’s why I don’t sympathise and empathise with any of them,” he added.

Speaking during the recent launch of the NPP’s nationwide Thank You Tour, Kennedy Agyapong stressed that true reconciliation is key to rebuilding the party after its electoral defeat in 2024.

“If we want to unite again as a party, I stand before the national executives to say that they should extend amnesty to Paul Afoko, Alan Kyerematen, and anybody who has been suspended, for them to come back,” he appealed.
