Two Ghanaian women who were kidnapped in Nigeria under the pretense of marriage proposals have safely returned to Ghana.
Anastasia Baidoo Arthur and Evelyn Konadu arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Friday, May 9, 2025, aboard an Africa World Airlines flight from Abuja.
Their return was confirmed by the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, during a press briefing on Friday, May 9, 2025.
“I’m pleased to confirm that at 1:45 today, I received the victims at Kotoka International Airport. They were accompanied by an official of the Research Department of the Ghana High Commission who verified their identities,” DCOP Donkor said.
She noted that the victims were in stable condition and would undergo medical evaluation before providing statements to assist ongoing investigations.
“Both women are in stable condition and will receive the necessary medical attention. Following that, they will go through standard police procedures to provide their accounts to assist with ongoing investigations,” she said.
DCOP Donkor reiterated the police’s commitment to crime prevention and public safety, urging citizens to remain vigilant and cautious in online interactions.
“The Ghana Police Service remains steadfast in its core mandate of crime prevention, detection, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders. We are committed to ensuring that Ghana remains a safe and secure place for all,” she added.
The two women’s plight went viral after disturbing videos showing them being tortured were circulated on social media.
Their captors had demanded a ransom of GH¢500,000 each from their families.
The victims had separately traveled to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, on April 22, 2025. They were lured by a group of men posing as white foreigners seeking marriage partners.
The suspects, identified as Peter Okoye (31), Paulinus Chidokwe (35), Chinoso Okafor (35), and Christian Emeka, operated as part of a broader transnational romance scam syndicate targeting victims in both Ghana and Nigeria.
Upon arrival, the women were kidnapped, stripped, tied, and assaulted with machetes. They were threatened with death; their heads were covered with black polythene bags, and they were told they would be hanged with nylon ropes.
GH¢18,000 had already been transferred to the suspects before authorities intervened.
With support from Ghana’s National Signals Bureau and the Nigeria Police Force, eight suspects were arrested from different hideouts, and the victims were rescued.

Accra, May 9, GNA – High utilities and taxes could jeopardise the country’s economic stabilisation, government’s 24-hour economy initiative for jobs and industrialisation agenda, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has cautioned.
This comes on the back of a recent announcement of a 14.75 per cent increase in electricity tariff, effective May 3, 2025, and the Government’s indication of adding the COVID-19 levy to Value Added Tax (VAT) in a rationalisation exercise.
“Fortunately, the economic indicators are getting right,” Dr Joseph Obeng, the President of GUTA, said in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency, cautioning against actions that could derail the gains.
“We do not have to negate it with any unwanted costs of doing business, regarding utility tariff increment and high Value Added Tax (VAT). Because if care is not taken, we will shoot ourselves in the foot,” he said.
“The 14.75 per cent increase in electricity tariff is so huge and unjustified, given the improvement in economic indicators that were cited as reasons for previous increases,” Dr. Obeng said.
GUTA, the largest trading body has been pushing for a broad restructuring of the current VAT system to ensure uniformity, simplicity, affordability, leading to greater compliance and generating more revenue for the Government.
The current VAT system comprised a standard rate of 15 per cent, with an additional 2.5 per cent National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), 2.5 per cent Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Levy, and a one per cent COVID-19 Levy.
In essence, businesses under the standard VAT scheme incurred a rate of 21 per cent, while small businesses with an annual turnover below GHS500,000 paid three per cent VAT under the Flat Rate Scheme (VFRS).
To alleviate hardships and ease the high cost of doing business, the Government pledged to scrap some tax handles, including Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy), Emissions Levy and 10 per cent levy on bet winnings, and COVID-19 levy.
So far, the E-levy, Emissions Levy and the Betting Tax have all been scrapped, but President Mahama has indicated that the COVID-19 levy would be addressed in a VAT rationalisation exercise in September 2025.
Dr Obeng advocated that the Government took bold steps to halt further increases in utilities, VAT and port charges to create a safe space for enhanced local production at affordable prices.
He urged the Government to purge the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of inefficiencies and alleged corrupt practices, citing the missing containers of cables and other essential materials of the company as example.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has identified arrears by ECG to Independent Power Producers and other power sector players as a major concern in the implementation of the country’s US$3 billion loan-supported programme.
“Arrears are continuing to accumulate, which is a very significant challenge for Ghana, given the implications it can have for power supply,” said Stéphane Roudet, the IMF Mission Chief for Ghana.
He, however, noted that the Fund had seen a promising reform that could make ECG more efficient at collecting its bills and reducing the large commercial losses of the company.
He said this during a media roundtable at the April 2025 IMF/World Bank Group Spring meetings in Washington DC, USA, expressing confidence in the country’s economic stability.
Ebi Bright was confirmed and sworn-in on May 9, 2025
Ghanaian actress-turned-politician, Ebi Bright, has been confirmed as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.
The actress, who contested as the 2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, was nominated for the MCE position by President John Dramani Mahama in April 2025.
Barely a month later, Ebi Bright has been overwhelmingly endorsed by assembly members, receiving 28 votes in favour and only 3 against, making her the first female mayor of Tema.
At her swearing-in ceremony on Friday, May 9, 2025, she reaffirmed her commitment to advancing the President’s 24-hour economy initiative.
“I am profoundly grateful to H.E. John Dramani Mahama for the confidence he has reposed in me, and to the gallant men and women who make up his cabinet and advisers. I also thank the Honourable Assembly Members and government appointees for your endorsement,” she stated.
She added, “It is my mission to lead Tema into a bold new chapter, one defined by purpose, service, and love. My vision is to transform Tema into a sustainable, inclusive, and dynamic urban hub where industrial revival thrives within a 24-hour economy.”
Ebi Bright first rose to national prominence as an actress and media personality before transitioning into politics.
She joined the NDC and quickly gained recognition within the party, leveraging her public profile and strong communication skills.

In a high-level engagement aimed at fostering national cooperation for disability sports, President of the African Paralympic Committee (APC) and the Ghana Paralympic Committee, Mr. Samson Deen, paid a strategic courtesy call on the new Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The meeting, held at the NSA headquarters, set the tone for a new era of collaboration ahead of Ghana’s hosting of two major para sports events: the APC Elective Congress and the first-ever Open Para Sports and Classification Festival, both slated for November 2025.
Mr. Deen used the occasion to highlight the significance of Ghana’s role in advancing para sports across Africa. He underscored the dire need for inclusive facilities, athlete development, and continental access to athlete classification.
“Africa’s para athletes are talented but structurally underserved. With Ghana taking the lead in hosting a continental classification festival, we’re not just creating opportunities — we’re correcting historic inequalities,” he stated.
The upcoming festival is expected to be a game-changer, providing athletes with international classification, a prerequisite for competing in global Paralympic events. Mr. Deen revealed that international classifiers and delegations from several countries have already been engaged, with diplomatic missions like the Spanish Embassy expressing enthusiastic support.
Mr. Deen also shared personal insights into the transformation of para sports in Ghana since his involvement in 2016, noting the shift from a personality-driven system to one that embraces fairness and community empowerment.
“This movement is no longer about individuals. It’s about systems that work, structures that uplift everyone.”
He appealed to the NSA for access to key venues such as the Borteyman Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium, and for technical personnel to support the festival’s logistics.
In a show of solidarity, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah pledged the full support of his office.
“This is a national priority. We’re committed to seeing para sports thrive and will provide the facilities and manpower needed to ensure success.”
The collaboration between APC and the NSA is being hailed as a bold step in Ghana’s sports diplomacy and a significant milestone in empowering athletes with disabilities across Africa.

Some Afrikaners have come out in public to back the US president and his refugee plan
South Africa has criticised the US amid reports it could receive white Afrikaners as refugees as early as next week.
A document seen by the BBC’s US partner, CBS, describes the potential resettlement as a “priority” for President Donald Trump’s government, however, the timing has not been publicly confirmed by the White House.
In a statement published on Friday, South Africa’s foreign ministry described the purported move as “politically motivated” and designed to undermine South Africa’s “constitutional democracy”.
In February President Trump described Afrikaners as victims of “racial discrimination” in an executive order, opening up the prospect for them to resettle in the US.
The South African authorities said they would not block the departures of those chosen for resettlement, but that the government had sought assurances from its American counterpart that those selected had been fully vetted and did not have pending criminal charges.
South Africa reiterated that allegations of discrimination against the country’s white minority are unfounded, adding that crime statistics do not indicate that any racial group has been targeted in violent crimes on farms.
Some groups representing the rights of white farmers have said they are being deliberately killed because of their race.
A spokesperson for the US state department told the BBC they were interviewing individuals interested in resettling in the US, and prioritising “Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination”, but would not confirm when the resettlement would begin.
The Trump administration has also accused South Africa of seizing land from white farmers without compensation, something Pretoria has repeatedly denied.
Ghanaian musician and outspoken critic, Criss Waddle, has once again taken to social media to criticize the economic policies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
In a recent post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on May 9, 2025, the musician humorously yet pointedly claimed that the NPP would have exploited global events to impose bizarre new taxes on Ghanaians, had they remained in power.

The newly confirmed Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, has pledged her unwavering commitment to the entire municipality, acknowledging the significant responsibility of her new role amidst recent political tensions.
Speaking on Eyewitness Newson Citi FM shortly after her confirmation on Friday, May 9, Bright addressed public concerns and expectations surrounding her appointment.
She emphasised that although her political efforts had previously focused on Tema Central, her dedication has always extended across the broader Tema area.
“Over the years, it’s been difficult for me to decouple Tema Central from Tema in general,” she said. “But the only reason why it was possible was because it was important to situate the area politically—so we could be heard instead of being marginalised.”
A former parliamentary candidate, Bright clarified that her past focus on Tema Central was strategic, but her loyalty has consistently been to the entire city.
“My commitment has always been to Tema as a whole, of which Tema Central, of course, is a part,” she noted. “So I am very honoured, but I feel the weight of the challenge.”
Responding to the public scrutiny that surrounded her nomination and confirmation, Bright acknowledged the heightened expectations now resting on her leadership.
“With all the brouhaha surrounding my nomination and confirmation, I think there will be a lot of expectation from myself and the comrades I will be working with,” she said adding “We are very elated.”
Ebi Bright has been officially confirmed as the Mayor (Metropolitan Chief Executive) of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, following a successful vote of approval by assembly members.
Out of 31 votes cast, 28 voted “Yes,” while 3 voted “No,” securing her confirmation as the 8th Mayor and the first female to hold the position in the history of the Assembly.
The confirmation ceremony, held at the Assembly Hall, was attended by several dignitaries, including Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi in the Volta Region, who also serves as the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament.
The atmosphere was filled with jubilation as party members and supporters celebrated this milestone achievement.
In her acceptance speech, Ebi Bright expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the nomination, as well as to the cabinet, assembly members, government appointees, and the people of Tema for their confidence in her leadership.
“Tema has been my home. I grew up here and received my education here. It is an honour and a privilege to serve the community that raised me,” she stated.
She also acknowledged the support of her family and faith: “I thank my husband, and above all, I thank God for this opportunity to lead.”
With her confirmation, Ebi Bright becomes the first woman to lead the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, marking a historic moment for the city.
She was sworn in by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.
Tema, May 09, GNA-Professor Ransford Gyampo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), has called on the leadership of the Ghana Police Service to continue the implementation of the 2024 directive against harassment of drivers on the transit corridor.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) in 2024 issued directives to the Ghana Police Service to cease harassing transit drivers, particularly those transporting goods between Tema and other major cities, to stop unprofessional conduct, extortion, and other malpractices that had been reported along transit corridors.
Professor Gyampo, in a speech read on his behalf by Mr. Prince Henry Ankrah, the deputy CEO in charge of operations, during a workshop for transit truck drivers, commended the police for the directive.
He said the directive significantly reduced the police harassment of transit truck drivers and delays along the country’s transit corridor.
“The Authority hopes that the directive will continue to be enforced to positively impact the haulage of transit,” he said.
He added that in line with the implementation of its memoranda of understanding with the three Sahelian landlocked countries, the GSA has since 2018 undertaken quarterly fact-finding missions along the major transit corridors in the country.
These exercises, he said, had unearthed serious infractions of Ghana’s Road Traffic Regulations, harassment of truck drivers, malpractices at Axle Load Stations, extortion, and deplorable road conditions, among others.
He said the findings of such trips were shared with relevant agencies to address the challenges identified and revealed that the outcome of the latest fact-finding trip undertaken in March 2025 on the Tema Hamile corridor recorded the 67 police stops made up of 46 permanent barriers and 21 temporary barriers.
He added that seven customs checkpoints between Nsutem and Hamile were recorded, while eight Immigration checkpoints, and six Axle Load stations were seen.
According to him, the authority had collaborated with the police administration to conduct sensitisation seminars for police officers along the corridors, adding that the seminars had contributed to improving the interface between police personnel and haulage truck drivers along the corridor.
A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has raised concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to donate six months of his salary to the Mahama Cares medical fund.
According to Owusu, the president’s primary source of income is his salary, and donating such a significant portion raises questions about how he intends to sustain himself and his family.
He further questioned whether Mahama plans to rely on other undisclosed sources of income, potentially from the state.
Owusu expressed his skepticism about the donation, arguing that while such gestures may appear commendable, they often conceal ulterior motives.
“The gesture by President Mahama, donating six months of his salary to the Mahama Cares medical fund, is something I don’t want to hear,” Owusu stated in an interview with Onua FM on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
“We are paying the president to work, so how will he feed himself? Is he going to steal from us? The last time we heard such a claim, it was said that Ken Ofori-Atta, a government appointee, did not receive a salary, yet he amassed wealth through his bank, Databank, by securing loans for the country,” he added.
Owusu further questioned the rationale behind Mahama’s donation, arguing that the government pays the president to work, not to give away his earnings.
“The government is paying you to work, so why are you giving away your salary? Your job is to be the president and nothing else, so where will you get money to feed yourself? The last time someone gave you a car, you said you had donated it to the state. If you don’t take bribes or have other sources of income, how will you survive?” he asked.
President John Dramani Mahama pledged six months of his salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as the Mahama Cares initiative, during the launch of the fund at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
Announcing the donation, Mahama commended Ghanaians who had already contributed to the fund, emphasizing that, as its founder, he must also play his part in ensuring its success.
“Prof. Ayetey, a retired doctor, has donated $1,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust. That should encourage all of us, especially corporate institutions, to do even more. As the initiator of this laudable program, I must also contribute.
“And so, I’ve pledged six months of my salary to Mahama Cares. I haven’t started receiving a salary yet—they say the Accountant General is still processing it, but once that’s completed, six months of whatever I’m entitled to will go into Mahama Cares,” he stated.
The Chamber of Local Governance (CHALOG) has advocated for the privatisation of revenue collection in Metropolitan Assemblies across the country.
This call follows a police investigation in the Ashanti Region involving four staff members from the Revenue Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
The officials are alleged to be part of a syndicate behind a fake ticketing scheme defrauding traders at the Kumasi Central Market.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One News on Friday, May 9, President of CHALOG, Dr. Richard Fiadomor, argued that entrusting revenue collection to the private sector would boost accountability and ensure more efficient use of funds for local development.
“Revenue collection should be privatised. When the private sector is collecting, they can’t keep it with them for 24 hours because the assembly can monitor. But if it is their staff from the government sector, the money can stay with them for more than 48 hours, leading to the unnecessary depletion of the money,” he said.
Dr. Fiadomor also accused the leadership of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of negligence, stating that they failed to enforce proper oversight of their internal revenue systems.
He emphasised that the KMA must be held accountable for gaps in its monitoring mechanisms.
“The other way they can go about, is by involving themselves in a serious monitoring, because the assembly has a hierarchy. There is a Chief Executive, Coordinating Director, Finance Officers, and these revenue operators operate under the Finance Officers.
“For me, the reason why there is difficulty in monitoring them is because some of the Finance Officers are complicit in the matter.”
Following a decisive ruling by an Accra High Court, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully retrieved 16 acres of airport lands from the McDan Group of companies.

Nigerian afrobeats star Tiwa Savage and American singer Usher Raymond have sparked relationship rumours after the duo were captured doing the the 30 seconds challenge in London recently.
Usher brought Tiwa Savage out as a surprise guest at his ‘Past Present Future’ tour stop at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday night. The crowd went wild as he joined Savage to perform her hit song, ‘Somebody’s Son’.
At the afterparty, the duo were captured doing the 30 seconds challenge, a clip of which has now gone viral.
Usher Raymond challenged Savage to freestyle for 30 seconds, and during her freestyle, she mentioned that he loves her. This sparked relationship speculations.
“I’m a little drunk! But it’s alright. I think I’m drunk enough, I think I’m drunk enough. Are you drunk enough? Usher, are you drunk enough? Listen, he loves me,” she freestyled amid cheers from the crowd, with her last statement particularly exciting them.
The viral clip elicited heavy reactions, with fans speculating that the duo were an item.
Recall that Usher first brought out Tiwa Savage to perform with him on stage during his headline performance at the Global Citizen Festival in Accra, Ghana, in 2022.
However, the duo has yet to officially confirm whether they are dating or not.
Policy analyst and Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has asserted that the exit of the suspended Chief Justice, Getrude Torkornoo, is inevitable, describing it as a foregone conclusion.
Speaking in an interview on TV3 and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, May 9, 2025, Dr Zaato stated emphatically that there is no chance of her returning to office.
“It’s a forgone conclusion, it’s done; the Chief Justice is gone. There will be a new Chief Justice. Let me say by the end of the year, watching everything going on, this Chief Justice is gone – she’s out.
“She’s not going back to the office. Maybe she’s going just to pack her things if she didn’t pack all of them, but as the Chief Justice she is done; it’s finished,” he stated.
He alleged that some people in the NDC had been able to convince President Mahama to remove the Chief Justice.
“I am a political scientist, so, I observe, I watch, I analyse, I see these things. Every political party has what we call hawks and maybe doves and then you have those in the middle. The hawks want everything extreme.
“The doves are in the middle, I want to believe that in this debate on these particular issues, the hawks within the NDC and the government have won, and they’ve been able to convince the president. They’ve won because I don’t think that His Excellency the president will want a removal of a Chief Justice to be part of his record,” he stated.
He further explained that the suspension of the Chief Justice points to a deliberate measure to achieve a political agenda.
“Everything here; everything we are trying to see about going to court… that is politics in action right there (sic) because you are seeing the weaponisation of the legal process to achieve a political objective; that is what is happening,” he added.
Following the determination of a prima facie case in the three petitions asking for the removal from office of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended her and set up a five-member committee to inquire into the petitions.
In the interim, a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has assumed the role as Acting Chief Justice.
His role as the Acting Chief Justice is in line with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that the most senior Justice on the Supreme Court will act as Chief Justice if the position of Chief Justice becomes vacant or the substantive Chief Justice is unable to perform his or her functions.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, the embassy stated that it received a total of 61,000 visa applications last year from individuals seeking to study, work, or visit the United States.
At a processing fee of $160 for non-petition-based non-immigrant visas, this figure translates to approximately $9.76 million spent by Ghanaians on visa applications in 2024.
The Consular General at the US Embassy, Elliot Fertik, disclosed this while addressing journalists at an event held in Accra on Friday, May 9, 2025. He revealed that out of the 61,000 applications, 25,000 visas were issued to Ghanaian applicants.

In the vibrant tapestry of African fashion, the fusion of Kente and lace fabrics stands out as a testament to creativity, cultural pride, and timeless elegance. Kente, with its rich history rooted in Ghanaian heritage, symbolizes royalty, wealth, and spiritual purity. Each pattern and color tells a story, making every piece unique and meaningful.
Lace, introduced to Africa through trade routes centuries ago, has been embraced and transformed into a symbol of sophistication and femininity. The intricate patterns and delicate textures of lace add a touch of grace to any ensemble.
When these two fabrics intertwine, the result is a harmonious blend of boldness and delicacy, tradition and modernity. Designers have embraced this combination, creating outfits that are both culturally significant and fashion-forward.
Wearing Kente is a celebration of African heritage. Incorporating lace elevates the ensemble, making it suitable for various occasions, from traditional ceremonies to contemporary events.
Whether it’s a mermaid gown with lace sleeves or a peplum top combining both fabrics, the design possibilities are endless. PARIS ST-GERMAIN’S long quest for Champions League success is closer than ever after a commanding semi-final victory over Arsenal, securing a 3-1 aggregate win following a 2-1 result in Wednesday night’s second leg. The French champions now march into the final in Munich, where they will face Italian giants Inter Milan on 31 May.
This final marks a break in recent tradition—it will be the first since 2004, when Porto faced Monaco, to feature no team from Spain, England, or Germany. For PSG, it is an opportunity to lift the one trophy that has consistently evaded them, despite their domestic dominance and heavy investment in star power over the years.
Their last appearance in the final came in the 2019-20 season, where they fell short against Bayern Munich. But this time, under the guidance of manager Luis Enrique, there is growing belief that things will be different.
“PSG, out of all the Champions League teams I’ve seen this season, they’re in a special moment at this club,” said former England defender Matthew Upson on BBC Radio 5 Live. “There’s a real feeling from me that this is going to be their time.”
PSG now stands on the brink of European football’s greatest prize. With momentum, belief, and balance on their side, PSG’s long-held dream may finally become a reality on the grand stage in Munich.

Twenty-four years ago today, what was meant to be an exhilarating football match between Ghana’s top clubs—Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko—descended into horror. The date, May 9, 2001, is etched into the national memory as the darkest day in Ghana’s sporting history.
It was the day 126 people lost their lives at the Accra Sports Stadium in a disaster that would forever change the face of Ghanaian football—and leave a scar on the soul of the nation.
The match had all the hallmarks of a classic. Hearts of Oak staged a dramatic comeback, scoring two late goals to win 2–1. But what followed shattered the jubilation. Angry over a referee’s decision and their team’s defeat, Kotoko fans began hurling bottles and plastic seats onto the pitch. Riot police, stationed in anticipation of unrest, responded with force—firing tear gas into the crowd.
What came next was chaos.
Blinded by the gas and overcome by panic, thousands tried to flee. But with several gates locked and poor stadium design creating deadly bottlenecks, escape proved impossible for many. As fans surged toward limited exits, the crowd crush turned fatal. By the end of the hour-long nightmare, 116 had died of compressive asphyxia, and 10 more from trauma. Families were left shattered. Ghana was left in mourning.
In a shocking twist of fate, one fan, Abdul Mohammed, was mistakenly taken for dead. Only when someone stepped on his foot in the morgue did he regain consciousness, narrowly avoiding being buried alive. His survival story stands out in a day otherwise defined by tragedy.
Eyewitness accounts and official investigations painted a grim picture of what went wrong. The stadium was described by the Ghana Institute of Architects as a “death trap.”
Medical staff had reportedly left before the disaster unfolded, and many of the gates were inexplicably locked. An inquiry blamed the police for overreacting with excessive force, accusing them of dishonesty and negligence. Six officers were charged with 127 counts of manslaughter but were ultimately acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The aftermath prompted a national reckoning. President John Agyekum Kufuor declared three days of mourning. The Premier League was suspended for a month. In 2007, the stadium was renovated to meet FIFA standards, though maintenance issues have persisted over the years.
But out of the ashes of despair, a culture of remembrance has grown.
Led by former Asante Kotoko chairman Herbert Mensah, the May 9th Remembered movement was born. From street walks in Kumasi and memorial wreath-layings to prayers in mosques and support for victims’ families and their 148 children, the annual tributes have become a staple of Ghana’s sporting calendar. The symbolic “May 9th Cup” was introduced in 2016, and in front of the stadium now stands a bronze statue titled “I Am My Brother’s Keeper”—a powerful reminder of the need for compassion in crisis.
Yet, for all the gestures and grief, some believe more must be done. Mensah has repeatedly called on the government to formally recognise May 9th as a national day of remembrance—so far, to no avail.
As Ghana remembers this solemn anniversary, one truth stands above all: May 9th is not just history. It is a call to vigilance, empathy, and national accountability.
The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has offered words of encouragement to former Vice President and the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging him not to view his electoral defeat as the end of his presidential ambitions.
Speaking at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Thank You Tour of the Northern Region, the Ya-Na told Dr. Bawumia that losing his first presidential bid does not mark the end of his political journey.
“Your electoral loss is a battle lost but not the war to lead the development of our dear nation,” the Ya-Na said, drawing comparisons with former President John Dramani Mahama’s comeback after defeats in 2016 and 2020 before his victory in the 2024 elections.
“This is only your first attempt, and there are several chances ahead. All that we need is to pray for a longer life and good health. May Allah continue to guide and guard you in all your endeavours,” the Dagbon King added.
The Ya-Na praised Dr. Bawumia’s contributions to national development during his tenure as Vice President, particularly in areas of digital innovation and economic transformation.
“We recognise your contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly in digitalisation and economic modernisation initiatives during your tenure as Vice President,” he said. “With determined efforts, you spearheaded several transformative projects, including Ghana’s digital addressing system and mobile money interoperability. All these have not gone unnoticed, and Ghanaians are grateful for your efforts.”
He advised Dr. Bawumia to maintain his commitment to national service despite the electoral setback.
“So I entreat you to still have the interest of this country at heart and not despair prematurely.”
In response, Dr. Bawumia expressed his deep appreciation to the Ya-Na for his enduring support, guidance, and blessings.
The NPP’s tour aims to express gratitude to supporters and traditional leaders across the country following the party’s performance in the 2024 general elections.

Dr Rashid-Tanko Computer is the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC
The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Tanko Rashid Computer, has refuted allegations that the party, while in opposition, received funds from the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, who has been accused of embezzling state resources.
Addressing the matter, Dr Rashid Computer firmly stated that the NDC had no engagements or financial transactions with Kwabena Adu-Boahene and completely dissociates itself from the allegations.
He further asserted that the opposition political party allegedly involved, as referenced by Adu-Boahene, is well aware of its identity, and that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is also fully aware of which party was truly implicated.
“On authority, I’m telling you that the NDC has nothing to do with what came out of that story. When he spoke about opposition, he knew the opposition party he was talking about, and everybody knows it.
“Even those people whom they are referring to helped them in their recent demonstration. You know their partners, that is who he was referring to. Everybody would have seen that, and no right-thinking person would think that our [NDC] arch opponent will give us resources to defeat him in an election. Does it make sense?” he said on JoyNews on Friday, May 9, 2025.
His comments come in response to revelations made by Kwabena Adu-Boahene, who, along with his wife, is at the center of a high-profile corruption scandal involving the alleged diversion of funds meant to enhance Ghana’s cybersecurity infrastructure into their personal accounts.
In a detailed account, Adu-Boahene claimed that an amount of US$500,000 was used in September 2024 to purchase “communications equipment” for an opposition political party.
Some Ghanaians have speculated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which was in opposition at the time, is the party referred to by Adu-Boahene in his claim.
However, the NDC has strongly denied any involvement, with Dr Rashid Computer asserting that the party had no dealings with Adu-Boahene and is not connected to the alleged transaction.

Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku may still be sidelined with a serious knee injury, but that hasn’t stopped him from finding joy through music and meaningful recovery steps.
The 21-year-old, currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, was seen in a social media video enjoying a new release by Northern music star Fancy Gadam.
The video shows Issahaku singing along and making several playful gestures while vibing to the song.
Off the pitch, however, Issahaku is making encouraging progress.
After months of rehabilitation, the Leicester City winger has finally returned to the grass, engaging in light drills and ball work, his first since undergoing surgery in late 2024.
The former Sporting CP forward sustained the injury during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola in November 2024, where he was forced off at halftime after feeling discomfort in his knee.
Medical tests later confirmed the ACL damage, ruling him out for the rest of the 2023/24 season, a major blow to both Leicester City and the Black Stars.
Before his setback, the former Dreams FC star had featured in 11 league games for Leicester, providing two assists and becoming a key part of the squad under manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Now, with the 2025/26 season approaching, Issahaku’s return to light training is a promising sign that he could be fit in time for pre-season.

Promising reviews: “Bought this dress because I always wanted to get the House of CB dress but didn’t want to pay over $250 for it. It’s honestly so good! I got the size large in this since they didn’t have my normal sizes, which are small to medium (I have a bigger chest, so I tend to size up). But since this has a corset back, I was able to cinch it up really tight, and it fit perfectly!” —Chris Herfurth Kennedy
“Beautiful, stunning perfection. This may be the best thing I’ve ever bought on Amazon. The corset in the back makes it fit like it was made for me. It’s double-lined and not see-through at all, even though it’s white. The straps are adjustable, the slit is a good height, and the fabric is slightly stretchy. I cannot say enough good things about it. It did come slightly wrinkly in the skirt, but nothing that a good steam won’t fix.” —Shoshanna

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is seeking the full support of its members at the upcoming delegates’ conference to enable the adoption of bold measures aimed at preparing the party for victory in the 2028 general elections.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal drug use and trafficking, particularly within Zongo communities.
Speaking during a community engagement with Zongo Chiefs and Muslim opinion leaders at Abossey Okai New Zongo in Accra, the Minister underscored the critical role of law enforcement in addressing the menace.
He warned that individuals involved in drug-related activities, regardless of their status or affiliations, will face the full rigour of the law.
“The abuse and trafficking of illegal drugs not only destroys lives but also disqualifies individuals from accessing government opportunities and programmes,” he said, urging the youth to shun drugs and make the most of available development initiatives.
Alhaji Muntaka also highlighted the broader social and economic consequences of drug use, calling on community members to be vigilant and proactive.
He encouraged Chiefs, Imams, and community leaders to take a firm stand against drug use, report suspicious wealth, and help expose criminal activity.
“No one will be spared. The law will catch up with anyone involved in drug-related offences,” he stated.
The Minister further emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in upholding the rule of law.
He advised against mob justice, instead urging residents to report wrongdoers to the appropriate authorities.
Addressing the youth directly, Muntaka appealed to them to align with government efforts aimed at improving livelihoods.
He urged them to uphold Islamic values and protect the integrity and future of their communities.
The Chief of Zongo in Accra, Yaaya Amisu Baako, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s visit and pledged the support of traditional and religious leaders in tackling the drug menace.
This engagement marks a renewed call for collaboration among stakeholders in building safer, healthier, and more prosperous communities.
In a significant move to streamline passport acquisition in Ghana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially rolled out a home and office passport delivery service for applicants.
The initiative, which took effect on Friday, May 9, is being led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. It is part of a strategic partnership with Ghana Post and local delivery company Troskit, aiming to ensure that applicants receive their passports within 15 days of application.
Speaking to the media about the reform, Minister Ablakwa said the new service is designed to address longstanding issues, including bureaucratic delays and interference by middlemen, commonly known as “goro boys.”
“Ghanaian passport applicants are no longer required to go back to the passport application centre for their passports. We have introduced peculiar services, making sure that passports are delivered to the comfort of the homes or offices of applicants,” he said.
He further revealed that the passport office now operates 24 hours a day in line with President Mahama’s vision of establishing a 24-hour economy.
“The passport office, you may also have heard, is now operating 24 hours in line with President Mahama’s vision of launching Ghana into a new era of the 24-hour economy. We have also introduced e-tracking to allow passport applicants to follow the process right from application to delivery,” Ablakwa explained.
“We are doing all these reforms to make sure that we do away with bottlenecks and end that phenomenon of goro boys middlemen taking advantage of the bureaucracy and delay in the passport acquisition process,” he added.

Growth Investment Partners (GIP) Ghana Ltd, an investment platform established by British International Investment (BII), has announced an investment in Maagrace Garments Industries Limited (MGIL), a leading Ghanaian garment manufacturing company.
The investment will finance the construction of a new production facility at MGIL’s premises in Koforidua, aimed at developing the industry by boosting production capacity, increasing export volumes, and creating employment at scale—particularly for women and youth.
MGIL is a subsidiary of Ethical Apparel Africa (EAA), an apparel sourcing and manufacturing firm headquartered in the United Kingdom.
MGIL currently employs over 700 direct workers, with 72 % of its workforce being women. The company exports over 90% of its products to major international brands based in the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe. EAA has a strong social purpose and has a mission to create over 10,000 quality manufacturing jobs in West Africa by 2030, while shaping the emerging apparel ecosystem to prioritise people and protect the planet.
Jacob Kholi, Chief Executive and Investment Officer of GIP Ghana said, “This investment is a testament to Ghana’s industrial potential and our ability to compete globally in ethical garment manufacturing. MGIL’s track record in creating jobs—especially for women—while driving export growth aligns with our mission to back scalable and inclusive businesses.”
Since acquiring MGIL, EAA has invested heavily in productivity-enhancing technologies, including solar power systems, digital pattern software, smart metal detection, and a custom enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform. These innovations have doubled productivity and enabled the successful transfer of technical skills to local middle managers.
Keren Pybus, Co-Founder and CEO of Ethical Apparel Africa commented, “We are delighted to partner with GIP to further expand MGIL’s operations. This investment supports our vision of building a world-class garment industry in Ghana—one that raises the standard for ethical manufacturing, women’s empowerment, and environmental responsibility.”
The expansion of the Koforidua facility will more than double existing capacity through installation of new production equipment and warehousing space. The company estimates the expansion will support the creation of over 1,000 additional jobs by 2026.
Maagrace is deeply committed to measuring and continuously improving worker well-being, having already built an on-site wellness centre and implemented pay structures that offer wages four times higher than previous average earnings. MGIL is actively working toward a 60% female leadership target and is recognized as a 2X-aligned company for its measurable progress in gender inclusion. It is also playing a key role in establishing Ghana as a highly competitive garment manufacturing hub, attracting foreign direct investment and contributing to the country’s foreign exchange earnings as an export-focused business.
Security forces, including armed police officers, have been positioned in Bole, Savannah Region, particularly around the residences of former President John Mahama and the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Sulemana Yusif. This follows unrest by local youth over the nomination of Abdulai Mahmoud as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
The demonstrators, expressing their anger, burned used tyres in the streets and invaded the district assembly hall. They also threatened to harm Sulemana Yusif
Women In Sustainability Africa (WiSA), has been launched on behalf of all women of Africa to mark a new beginning to accelerate growth towards the closure of the SDG gaps including gender inequality.
The event, which was held at the Wesley Towers in Accra, Ghana brought together stakeholders to drive the sustainability agenda.
Speaking at the launch, the Founder of WiSA and Convener for the event, Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, stated that the key to bridging the gender inequality gap is two pronged.
First is the recognition of women as a source of labour with positive return on every investment that is made to build capacity in women and second is men standing side by side with women to lift up and empower women.
Against the first backdrop, she said if governments invest in women, there would be a return on investment, because women a major source of labour to any economy in Africa and if she were a subsistence farmer, “now she would be doing industrial farming, that is a higher productivity and higher capacity, and the GDP will improve.”
Secondly Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, said when God created the earth, he urged both men and women together to be fruitful, take dominion and multiply.
“Gender inequality gap cannot be closed by women alone, when God created the earth, he empowered both the man and woman together and he said be fruitful and take care of the world I have given you,” she noted.
Against this backdrop, she said if the gender equality gap can close, there must be catalytic efforts that cause a revolution in order to achieve such goal.
She said, therefore, there is a need for unity; men and women standing side by side to lift women up, because there is strength in togetherness and gain for everyone.
She said, this is the new dimension of gender empowerment and the new wave which must be propagated across Africa without any antagonism between men and women.
“That’s why it is an African agenda we need to stand together, there is strength in numbers. The door of success we seek to enter as women, the men are holding the keys to the room, if you fight with them how do we enter the room ?,” she quizzed.
Nana Yaa who is also founder of the League of Extraordinary Women said, WiSA will work with men, he for she champions, CSOs, Corporate Institutions, local and International Development Organisations to bring all women and women groups together (especially those at the grassroots level) to foster the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across Africa.
Speaking at the event, Ghana’s Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said, recognising the proportionate impact of climate change on women, the Ministry has developed a roadmap to strengthen the gender responsiveness of social protection programmes.
According to her, this initiative aims to ensure that their interventions are inclusive, equitable and effective in building resilience among vulnerable populations.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to use this occasion to announce that in alignment with WiSA’s vision, the Ministry will launch a campaign dubbed Women Labour Day” she revealed.
This campaign will be celebrated as part of the activities of May 1, and throughout the month of May every year.
She disclosed that in partnership with WiSA and other stakeholders, the Ministry will work towards using this campaign to nationally and continentally recognise women as sources of labour and agents of sustainability.
She said, this campaign would be rolled out in schools, media platforms and community spaces.
“Let this be more than a summit, let it be a starting point for renewed action and strengthened alliances. Let us charge forward as a united force where women are seen, heard, valued and empowered to lead sustainability,” she further added.
The Minister said, “To all men who lift women as equals, with women, we stand with you, together we will build a sustainable Africa.”
Ghana’s Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability, Hon. Issifu Seidu, on his part said, “African women have always been the backbone of our communities, playing key roles in agriculture, healthcare, education, and the informal economy. However, their contributions remain undervalued and underappreciated in many spheres of society.”
“Today, as we launch WiSA, we take a stand to change that. Women are not just a part of the labour force—they are the driving force behind our sustainable future. From climate adaptation to community development, women’s roles are not only vital but central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he stated.
“We cannot achieve lasting environmental and economic stability unless we address the gender imbalances that still exist in many sectors, particularly in those related to climate action and green energy,” he said.
The Minister further said, WiSA’s vision to establish a Resource & Research Centre dedicated to tracking, reporting and promoting women’s contributions to sustainability could not be more timely or necessary.
Additionally, Ghana’s Minister for Labour, Hon. Rashid Pelpuo in his address said, the core of existence of any nation is the woman and the sustainability of the economy is as a result of the participation.
At all levels he had worked, he came to the realisation that to achieve success, you need both the male and female.
He, therefore, encouraged women to be conscious about the role they play in society, adding that where there is a difference and where women are disregarded, there would be a problem.
He announced that his Ministry is working to amend the current Labour law to recognise the position of women in the country’s workforce.
The flagbearer of Social Democratic Party of Nigeria, Adewole Adebayor called for a borderless Africa, where Africans can easily trade amongst themselves for economic development.
“Luckily for us, our cultural background and experiences under colonial power is the same, it is on the basis of this I will infuse Nigerian capital into WiSA. And if you’re sustainable and come with a sustainable plan we can start with a modest contribution to this programme. On that basis we can work with this programme which we can support with One Million dollars,” he concluded.
The CEO of Ghana’s Microfinance & Small Loans Center (MASLOC), in her pledged the Government of Ghana’s support to WiSA by supporting 16,000 sustainable women farmers in Ghana with loans and technical guidance to improve their trade and livelihoods.
The Programme organised by Women In Sustainability Africa (WiSA) was in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and Ministry of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, MASLOC, the League of Extraordinary Women Network, The UN Global Compact and EIB Network, among others.

Rising Afrobeats singer Manye Fi is making waves with the release of her debut EP, Manye Fi Rebirth, a five-track project led by the flirty, addictive single “Rema.”
Now available across all major streaming platforms, the EP is quickly gaining attention from fans looking for fresh sounds similar to global stars Tems, Tyla and Ayra Starr.
Originally released exclusively on Audiomack on May 2nd, Manye Fi Rebirth has already crossed 80,000 streams in its first week, and that’s with little to no heavy promotion.
Though “Rema” was the first to drop, it’s the third track, “Special” that has unexpectedly become the most streamed song on the EP.
Meanwhile, “Tatata” and “Man Down” which features TGMA 26 nominee Ayisi, are also building traction as listeners explore the full project.
Born to Ghanaian parents and raised between Germany and the UK, Manye Fi blends her European energy with her West African roots, bringing something unique to the Afrobeats genre.
For fans searching for new Afrobeats music, Manye Fi offers a fresh yet familiar vibe that connects instantly. Most tracks on the EP are in English, but Manye Fi weaves in Ga language moments, especially in the final track, “Nyash Commander”, giving global fans something new while shining a light on her heritage.
“I wanted each track to feel like crossing a bridge from where I started to where I’m headed,” she shared with GhanaNdwom. “Manye Fi Rebirth isn’t a rebrand; it’s a reminder that every day you wake up, you get to start over.”
Manye Fi’s debut EP takes listeners on an emotional journey through love, heartbreak, healing, and self-worth.
The opening track, Tatata, sets the tone with a story of an ex stirring up old feelings and confusion. She’s caught between the comfort of the familiar and the need to move forward.
In Man Down, the tone shifts. She’s done with the games. Her growth is loud and clear as she ignores his repeated calls and confidently declares him a chapter closed.
With Special, the mood softens. Here, she reflects on a time when she was broken, saved by someone who saw her value. But it’s the love she finds within herself that truly brings her peace.

Two-time Guinness World Record contender, Afua Asantewaa, has fired back at critics who have consistently criticised her fashion choices.
In a video circulating on social media on May 8, 2025, Afua made it clear that she is not interested in meeting fashion expectations and urged Ghanaians to stop advising her on how to dress.
“How old are you, how much land do you have in your name? Do you even have a house? A car isn’t even a property because anything can happen to it. Even if your building gets burnt you can still renovate it.
“You do not have any project in your name and you are here talking about me. Please I am not a fashion icon. I am a broadcast journalist… If you don’t understand you can please go to the fashionista’s page and talk about your fashion,” she said.
Afua also credited actress Tracy Boakye for influencing her financial mindset, especially when it comes to prioritising real estate over luxury fashion.
“One key lesson I picked from watching Tracy Boakye’s interview was how people spend unnecessarily on fashion. I remember how people used to criticise her outfits. She once said, instead of wasting money to impress people online, invest it in building something for yourself,” she said.
She added, “Some people live in single rooms but buy expensive outfits just to impress others on social media. I have children to raise and projects to complete. When I’m done with all that, I can choose to be the most fashionable person on earth, and no one can stop me.”

Prof Jasper Ayelazuno speaking to Ghanaweb in Tamale
The Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Prof Jasper Ayelazuno, has called for urgent action to address the galamsey menace in the country.
He said Ghana is no longer fighting illegal small-scale mining but well-organized, mechanized, industrialized galamsey.
Prof Jasper noted that merely describing the current state of illegal mining in the country as galamsey understates the intensity and levels of disruption of this current form of mining.
Explaining the differences between the two, the Political Scientist said that formerly, galamsey simply referred to artisanal small-scale mining where illegal miners used rudimentary tools such as pans, pick-axes, and shovels for mining.
This, he said, is different from the current form, where heavy machines such as excavators and chipping machines are used to cause massive disruptions within minutes of mining.
Speaking to GhanaWeb in Tamale on the sidelines of a public lecture on Ghana’s Extraction Industry on Thursday, Prof Ayelazuno stressed that the evolution of illegal mining from artisanal small-scale illegal mining to mechanised industrialised galamsey is the reason for the “uncontrollable disruption” the new form of galamsey is causing.
“It used to be artisanal small scale galamsey but now it is mechanized industrialised galamsey that is why we have the level of disruption that we have because with the artisanal mining galamsey, they use rudimentary tools but compare that to excavators, compare that to chanfans, compare that to all those very huge machines that are used for mining now, the disruption they can do within a minute, it used not to be so to do that kind of disruption with a pan or a pick-axe or a shovel,” he explained.
The Dean of Communication and Media Studies at the UDS added that galamsey in its earlier form, used to be a sustainable livelihood activity for rural people, just like farming.
“If you look at galamsey, it’s not what it used to be. It used to very sustainable livelihood activity of rural people, just like farming. Even when it was made illegal by the laws of Ghana, people were still mining, and they called it galamsey all the way till the 2000s,” he pointed out.
Prof Jasper blamed Ghana’s political class for facilitating their cronies, family members and sponsors to engage in this mechanized industrialized galamsey.
He opined that “After the 2000s, things changed, it’s not like galamsey just popped up from nowhere, it is something that evolved and the evolution from sustainable mining or galamsey to now uncontrollable disruption is as a result of the political class facilitating their cronies, facilitating their family members, facilitating their sponsors. You know, we’re in a democracy that is called monocracy, so they are now sponsoring them to get money from galamsey which they then use to invest in their campaign. So it is a political issue.”
Prof Jasper noted that although Ghana seem to have lost the fight against galamsey, it will have to take committed political leadership to address the menace.
The public lecture was organized by the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCMS-UDS) in collaboration with Third World Network-Africa (TWN-Africa) as part of TWN-Africa’s 30th anniversary Campus Conversations public lecture series.
It was on the theme “Economic Transformation and Extractives: The Community and Women at the Centre of Ghana’s Transformation.”
Speaking at the opening of the public lecture, Pauline Vande-Pallen, Programme
Officer on Gender and Economic Policy and Extractives at TWN-Africa said the campus conversations are organized for students to understand developments in especially in the extractive industry.
She said the country’s mining industry was expanding very rapidly, and across the country, hence the need for students across the country to understand the issues to be able to shape the country and the world in the future.
