Regional Maritime University matriculates 675 students for 2024/2025 academic year

0

The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has officially admitted 675 students for the 2024/2025 academic year, as part of its 22nd and 10th matriculation ceremonies held on Friday, March 14, 2025, in Accra.

The students, drawn from both August 2024 and January 2025 admission windows, comprise 52 postgraduate and 623 undergraduate students. Of the total intake, 516 are male and 159 female.

Notably, the number of females enrolled in the traditionally male-dominated sea-going programs of Nautical Science and Marine Engineering has seen a significant increase from 35 in the previous academic year to 96 this year.

Speaking at the ceremony, Acting Vice-Chancellor of RMU, Dr. Jethro Brooks Jnr., highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and equipping students with skills for the maritime industry.

“This industry offers many opportunities for growth, exploration, and innovation. From shipbuilding and navigation to marine engineering and logistics, the industry is a vast and dynamic field that requires skilled and dedicated professionals like ours,” he said.

Dr. Brooks also commended the increase in female enrollment in cadetship programs. “It is significant to note that admission of females into the sea-going programs has increased. This means that the university’s drive of encouraging more females to take up sea-going programs is achieving good results,” he added.

The event was attended by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who emphasized the government’s commitment to maritime education and job creation. He linked RMU’s role to the government’s flagship 24-hour Economy policy, which aims to expand employment opportunities.

“The role of the Regional Maritime University per its mandate of training manpower in the area of seafarers very much aligns with the 24-hour Economy policy and His Excellency the President’s vision of job creation,” the minister stated.

He further assured RMU of the government’s support, citing ongoing efforts to modernize the university, including securing funding from South Korea for a $173.95 million infrastructure project.

Mr. Nikpe also urged students to embrace discipline and excellence, stressing, “You cannot strive for excellence if you are not disciplined. We live in a civilized society, and civility and decency must reflect in all our actions.”

We can only wish Dampare well

The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has extended his best wishes to the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, following his removal from office.

Speaking on The KeyPoints on TV3 March 15, Mr. Ofosu highlighted that Dr. Dampare still has a bright future ahead, given his extensive professional experience and the fact that he has not yet reached retirement age.

“We can only wish Dampare well and thank him for his services. With his experience, he remains valuable and should be in high demand in other areas where his expertise is needed. This is a routine leadership change,” he stated.

On Thursday, March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama removed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from his position as Inspector General of Police (IGP).

COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno was appointed as his successor and sworn into office on Friday, March 14, officially assuming his role as the new head of the Ghana Police Service.

Ghanaians Set for Third Consecutive Relief at the Pumps

0

Ghanaians are set to experience a third consecutive drop in fuel prices this year, offering much-needed relief to motorists, transport operators, and businesses grappling with economic pressures. This latest reduction, expected to take effect in the coming days, is attributed to a combination of favorable global oil prices, a stabilizing cedi, and adjustments in local petroleum pricing mechanisms.

Industry insiders suggest that both petrol and diesel prices will see a notable decrease, with estimates pointing to a reduction of up to GHS 0.80 per litre. This marks a positive trend that began earlier in the year, signaling a potential shift toward more stable fuel costs after months of erratic fluctuations.

The Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) has attributed the drop to global market forces, including a decline in Brent crude oil prices and reduced international refining costs. Additionally, the recent strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar has played a key role in easing import costs for petroleum products.

Transport unions and businesses have welcomed the announcement, highlighting that fuel prices directly influence operational costs across multiple sectors. However, consumers remain skeptical about whether the decline will translate into lower transport fares, as past price drops have not always led to immediate adjustments by public transport operators.

Despite the good news, energy analysts caution that fuel prices remain subject to external factors, including global supply chain disruptions, geopolitical developments, and OPEC production policies. They warn that while the current trend is favorable, any unexpected shift in the global market could reverse these gains in the coming months.

Government officials have urged fuel retailers to ensure that price reductions are passed on to consumers fairly, emphasizing the need for transparency in the pricing structure. Many Ghanaians are hopeful that this sustained downward trend will provide financial relief and help stabilize the broader economy.

For now, however, motorists can look forward to a continued break at the pumps, as Ghana enjoys a rare period of fuel price reductions in an otherwise unpredictable global economic landscape.

Sankofa Series: Ghana’s reserves fell from £200m to £250m debt under Nkrumah

During an interview with the British press at the offices of the Ghana High Commission in London, former Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia recounted the magnitude of the economic crisis Ghana faced.

Dr. Busia, who assumed office in 1969, accused Kwame Nkrumah’s regime of economic mismanagement, which resulted in inflation reaching approximately 117 percent, record-high unemployment, food shortages, and other economic difficulties.

According to Dr. Busia, Ghana was in a strong financial position at independence, with more than £200 million in reserves. However, by the end of Nkrumah’s regime in 1966, the country was burdened with debt totaling over £250 million.

He revealed this information when asked about the economic challenges his government faced while speaking with the British press in London in the 1970s.

“First, take the economic problem. At independence, we had more than £200 million in reserves, but by the time of the coup and the end of Nkrumah’s regime, we had accumulated a debt of over £250 million. In fact, we do not yet know exactly how much Ghana owes because certain agreements were signed, and we have not been able to gather all the facts and figures concerning them.”

Discussing other economic challenges, Dr. Busia added, “We also face shortages of food, essential goods, and other items. Additionally, on a political level, we must address the fact that democratic rule was completely shattered.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Busia was overthrown in a ‘bloodless’ military coup led by Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong on January 13, 1972.

Guinness World Record sing-a-thon contender Afua Asantewaa has clarified that her team informed her that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia donated GH¢20,000 to support her cause.

During an interview with Accra FM, Asantewaa stated that she did not receive any substantial gift from the then New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, except for medicine to soothe her sore throat, which was personally presented to her by Dr. Bawumia.

Her claim sparked controversy, prompting the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Salam Mustapha, to respond that the former NPP flagbearer had indeed given GH¢20,000 to support Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon.

Addressing the matter, Asantewaa stated that her team only informed her about Dr. Bawumia’s donation moments ago.

She explained that the money was not given to her directly, and she does not know who on her team received it.

“It was this evening that my team told me about Dr. Bawumia’s GH¢20,000 donation. I cannot say who received the money, and they are not telling me. Some claim my husband took it, but I am unaware of that.

“Nana Reagan and Socrate say the money was meant for the boys, so I don’t know why I am being associated with it. Dr. Bawumia personally gave me the medicine. But I want to clarify that I did not receive the money. People refuse to acknowledge the truth, but I am being honest and not ungrateful,” she explained during United Showbiz on UTV on March 15, 2025.

Fuel prices set to drop in second pricing window of March 2025 – COMC projects

0

Motorists and households can expect some relief at the pump as fuel prices are projected to decline in the second pricing window of March 2025.

According to the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMC), petrol prices are expected to drop by 4.5%, while diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will see reductions of 3.8% and 3.9%, respectively.

The anticipated price cuts come amid fluctuations in global crude oil prices and adjustments in forex exchange rates, factors that heavily influence fuel costs in the country.

Some industry analysts believe the reduction will provide some respite for consumers who have been grappling with rising fuel costs in recent months.

Meanwhile, the new prices are expected to take effect from mid-March 2025, pending final price adjustments by individual oil marketing companies.

Reggie Rockstone And Family Robbed By Young Man, Makes Away With Cash And Phones

In an alarming turn of events, legendary Ghanaian musician Reggie Rockstone, known as the ‘Godfather of Hiplife,’ and his family experienced a harrowing robbery that has left fans and community members in disbelief. The incident took place in the bustling heart of Accra, a neighborhood where many would assume safety and security are guaranteed. However, this brazen act illustrates a growing concern about crime that is beginning to infiltrate even the most familiar and well-known locales.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the incident occurred during the early evening when Reggie and his family were enjoying a family outing. They had gathered in the living room, sharing laughter and stories, when an uninvited guest entered their home. According to reports, the young man was armed and took the family by surprise, demanding cash and valuables. The entire ordeal lasted only a matter of minutes, but for Reggie and his loved ones, it felt like an eternity.

Reggie, a well-respected figure in the music industry and a prominent member of the community, immediately took to social media to share details of the distressing event. In a heartfelt post, he expressed his shock and urged his followers to remain vigilant and secure in their own homes. “We may be public figures, but we are still human like everyone else,” he wrote. “This robbery serves as a stark reminder that no one is invincible to crime. We must work together as a community to support one another and promote safety.”

The young man reportedly made off with cash and a number of mobile phones belonging to family members. As word of the robbery spread, fans and fellow artists voiced their outrage and disbelief. Many took to social media to express their support for Reggie, highlighting the importance of community solidarity during such trying times. Offers of assistance poured in, with fans pledging to support local initiatives aimed at reducing crime and enhancing security within the area.

Community leaders are rallying together to organize neighborhood watch programs, encourage dialogue between residents, and foster connections with local law enforcement.

While Reggie Rockstone and his family are relieved to be safe physically, shaken but unharmed, their unsettling experience has ignited a broader conversation about safety and crime prevention in Ghana. As home invas.

Donald Trump lays out new US travel ban for 43 countries – here’s full list

0

A leaked draft list shows three tiers of nations whose citizens may face restrictions or complete bans on entering the United States after previously barring entry from Muslim countries

Trump is set to slap restrictions on travellers from 43 countries

Donald Trump is set to slap new bans on people from 43 countries from travelling to the US – more than the restrictions set during his first term.

The Orange Manbaby – who sparked outrage and chaos at airports with his previous travel ban – ordered his staff to draw up a list of countries that will face full visa suspensions and partial suspensions.

A leaked memo reveals a draft list of recommendations by officials which will see a colour-coded scheme come into place, the Mirror reports.

Swathes of nations will be divided into three separate groups with 11 countries on the ‘Red’ list, meaning all travel will be banned, sources told the New York Times.

Russian President Vladimir Putin (R) and US President Donald Trump are pictured before a meeting
Russia would be on the yellow list under the leaked plans

These would include: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen, according to officials. An orange category would mean visas would be heavily restricted and a yellow listed country would mean they would have 60 days to address concerns.

The draft proposal also included an ‘Orange’ list of 10 countries for which travel would be restricted but not cut off.

No restrictions are set to be placed on Ukrainian travellers, despite a diplomatic row between the countries

In those cases, affluent business travellers might be allowed to enter, but not people traveling on immigrant or tourist visas.

Travellers would need to take part in mandatory in-person interviews in order to obtain a visa.

The countries affected by that would be: Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Turkmenistan.

The third tier of restrictions, coded the ‘Yellow’ list, would give 22 countries 60 days to address deficiencies or they will remain on the list.

This list includes: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Sao Tome and Principe, Vanuatu and Zimbabwe.

Trump introduced a “Muslim” ban during his first term

The travel ban would be an expansion of the President’s “Muslim ban” from his first term where he introduced a number of executive orders aimed to bar entry to the country from countries that predominantly had majority Muslim populations.

After taking office on January 20, Trump signed an executive order that required the State Department to identify countries “for which vetting and screening information is so deficient as to warrant a partial or full suspension on the admission of nationals from those countries.”

He told the department it had 60 days to complete a report for him, which means it is due next week.

The State Department previously said it was following Trump’s order and that it was “committed to protecting our nation and its citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process.”

African Hair Braiding Styles for Kids

0

African hair braiding styles are a beautiful way to celebrate and care for children’s natural hair. These braids not only help keep hair neat and manageable but also allow for versatility and creativity. For kids, these styles can be both functional and fun, providing a protective style that requires minimal maintenance while giving them a stylish, trendy look. Below are some popular and easy African hair braiding styles for kids.

One of the most popular styles is box braids. These braids are created by sectioning the hair into small squares and braiding each section from root to tip. Box braids are not only cute but also protect the hair from damage, making them perfect for kids with longer or thicker hair. They can be styled in various ways, such as left long, tied up into ponytails, or decorated with beads and ribbons for added flair.

Another favorite is cornrows. Cornrows are tight braids that lie flat on the scalp. This style is incredibly versatile and can be customized with different designs, such as straight, zig-zag, or even curved patterns. Cornrows are great for keeping hair neat and out of the face, and they can last for weeks with proper care. Kids can even add small accessories like colorful beads or hair cuffs to make their cornrows pop.

Feed-in braids are also a popular choice, especially for kids with medium to long hair. This style is similar to cornrows but involves gradually adding synthetic hair into the braids to create a longer, fuller look. Feed-in braids can be done in various styles, including a simple straight-back pattern or more intricate designs with twists and turns. This style not only gives a sleek, polished appearance but is also practical for maintaining long-lasting braids without excessive tension on the scalp.

For younger kids or those with shorter hair, twists are another adorable and easy option. Two-strand twists or mini twists involve dividing the hair into small sections and twisting them. This style is simple to achieve and can be styled in multiple ways, from twists pinned back to a cute twist-out look. Twists are gentle on the hair and can be adorned with colorful rubber bands or beads for a playful finish.

Lastly, Ghana weaving or herringbone braids is a more intricate style, where the hair is braided in a criss-cross pattern along the scalp, creating a unique and textured appearance. Although this style may take more time to do, it can give kids a bold, sophisticated look that stands out.

African hair braiding styles for kids are not just about beauty but also about promoting hair health. These protective styles help retain moisture, reduce breakage, and allow hair to grow freely. Whether simple or intricate, braiding offers a fun and functional way to care for and style children’s hair while embracing their natural textures.

US expels South Africa’s ambassador, calling him ‘race-baiting’ Trump hater

0

The U.S. is expelling South Africa’s ambassador, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, calling the envoy a “race-baiting politician” who hates President Donald Trump.

Ties have slumped since Trump cut U.S. financial aid to South Africa, citing disapproval of its land policy and its genocide case against Washington’s ally Israel at the International Court of Justice.

“South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States is no longer welcome in our great country,” Rubio said on Friday in a post on X about the rare barring of a nation’s top diplomat.

“Ebrahim Rasool is a race-baiting politician who hates America and hates @Potus (Trump).”

In statements from its presidency and international relations department, South Africa called the move regrettable but said it remained committed to building mutually beneficial relations and would address the matter via diplomatic channels.

Rubio reposted an article from right-wing website Breitbart that quoted the envoy as saying that Trump was leading a white supremacist movement. He must depart by March 21, a State Department spokesperson said on Saturday.

Reuters was unable to contact Rasool or confirm his whereabouts.

News website Semafor reported this week that Rasool has failed to secure routine meetings with State Department officials and key Republican party figures since Trump, a Republican, took office in January.

The U.S. is reviewing its South Africa policy, the State Department spokesperson added, citing the land policy, South Africa’s growing ties with countries like Russia and Iran and “aggressive positions” toward the U.S. and allies.

Koku Anyidoho questions GH¢2.7 billion allocation to Presidency in 2025 budget

Former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Samuel Koku Anyidoho Former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Samuel Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has questioned the rationale behind the state allocating GH¢2.7 billion to the Office of the President in the 2025 budget.

The budget, explained by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, as covering the salaries of public sector workers whose agencies now fall under the presidency for administrative purposes, has not been well received by Anyidoho.

In a social media post on March 15, 2025, Anyidoho questioned, “Which state workers? Have these state workers not already been captured on the payroll of the Controller & Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) for years? Or are they fresh state workers? Just asking.”

In a separate tweet on X (formerly Twitter), he posted the news with the caption, “Really?”

Kwakye Ofosu clarified that no new civil servants have been recruited and that these salaries have always been part of government expenditure.

He explained that the only difference is that their budget allocations now fall under the presidency, following the reduction in the number of ministries.

Addressing concerns about the GH¢78 million allocated under the presidency, Kwakye Ofosu stated that the amount is for the operational budgets of state-owned media and public information agencies, including GBC, ISD, and GNA, which are now classified under the presidency’s budget.

“These institutions provide public service information, and their operations are funded by the state. This is not a separate allocation for political activities,” he said.

Don’t marry if your manhood is not functioning – Assemblies of God pastor warns men

Rev. John Kofi Bosomtwe of the Liberty Assemblies of God, Kumasi Rev. John Kofi Bosomtwe of the Liberty Assemblies of God, Kumasi

Rev. John Kofi Bosomtwe of the Liberty Assemblies of God, Kumasi, has cautioned men against getting married if they suffer from sexual dysfunction.

According to the pastor, men who experience such issues should only proceed with marriage if their partner is a virgin, as that might prevent potential problems. However, he warned that marrying a woman who has prior sexual experience could lead to difficulties in the relationship.

Speaking to his congregation in a viral video shared on social media, he emphasized that sex is a crucial factor in marriage.

He stated that a fulfilling sexual relationship contributes to a happy home.

“If you realize that your manhood is not functioning, don’t marry. That doesn’t mean that if you cannot achieve an erection, you cannot have sex.

“Seek guidance to learn how to handle the situation because the problem is that the woman you are marrying may already have experience.

“If she is a virgin, then there is no problem; you are safe. But if she has had previous sexual encounters, she may mock you during intercourse,” he said.

He further explained that a good sex life strengthens marriages and fosters generosity between spouses.

“If you have good sex, men become more caring towards their wives and shower them with gifts,” he added.

Henry Quartey convinced Akufo-Addo to make Yohuno Dampare’s deputy to assist in elections – Abronye DC

0

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has alleged that former Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, played a key role in former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to appoint COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the then-Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP).

According to Abronye DC, Henry Quartey, at the time, claimed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). As a result, he allegedly advised Akufo-Addo that the NPP needed someone affiliated with their party to help them in the 2024 elections.

In an interview on Wontumi TV on March 14, 2025, Abronye DC stated, “NPP people shouldn’t blame Dampare for the party’s loss in the 2024 elections. Instead, they should direct their anger at Henry Quartey, the former Interior minister.

“He was the one who woke Akufo-Addo from his sleep and told him that Dampare was an NDC man. Therefore, he advised that Yohuno Tetteh, an NPP man, should be appointed Deputy IGP and placed in charge of operations to assist in the elections.”

Abronye DC further alleged that almost all accusations against Dampare at the Jubilee House were orchestrated by Henry Quartey.

He also said that he warned Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that Henry Quartey’s decisions would lead the party into opposition.

“In one of our discussions, I told them, Akufo-Addo and Bawumia were present, that because of the problems Henry Quartey had created within the Ghana Police Service, he was leading us into opposition. Almost all the allegations against Dampare at the Jubilee House were orchestrated by Henry Quartey,” Abronye DC stated.

Michael Abbey, new CEO of the Venture Capital Trust Fund Michael Abbey, new CEO of the Venture Capital Trust Fund

Ghana’s economy is at a pivotal moment, with private capital playing an essential role in fostering business growth, creating jobs, and driving economic transformation.

The need to mobilize domestic capital, attract global investment, and provide strategic financing for high-growth SMEs has never been more pressing.

Against this backdrop, the appointment of Michael Abbey as the new CEO of the Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) marks a significant milestone in shaping Ghana’s private equity and venture capital ecosystem.

As a key institution in the country’s investment landscape, VCTF’s leadership plays a crucial role in sustaining capital flows and fostering long-term economic development.

VCTF was established by an Act of Parliament to address Ghana’s SME financing gap and build a robust private capital market.

The industry anticipates that the new leadership will focus on strengthening capital mobilization and deployment by engaging pension funds, insurance firms, and institutional investors to channel local capital into venture capital and private equity funds.

A strategic allocation of funds will be essential to support high-impact businesses that drive job creation and economic growth.

Investor confidence and governance will also be a key priority. Transparency and accountability in fund management are critical to sustaining trust among investors.

Strengthening corporate governance structures in line with global best practices will further enhance the credibility of Ghana’s private capital market.

Additionally, engaging with development finance institutions, sovereign wealth funds, and impact investors will help unlock additional capital for the sector.

Beyond capital deployment, advancing policy advocacy and ecosystem development will be essential in shaping a more enabling investment climate.

Collaborating with key regulators such as the Ministry of Finance, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) will be necessary to drive regulatory reforms that facilitate private investment.

The finalization of the Limited Partnerships Act will be a crucial step in attracting more private capital.

Furthermore, advocating for incentives to encourage both local and international investors to participate in venture financing will be vital in ensuring sustainable growth.

VCTF’s leadership is also expected to work closely with the Ghana Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (GVCA) to support the broader private capital ecosystem.

GVCA has played a significant role in shaping Ghana’s private equity and venture capital landscape through policy advocacy, investor engagement, capacity building, and market research.

By facilitating entrepreneurial development programs, GVCA has helped prepare SMEs for investment opportunities, ensuring that businesses seeking funding are well-positioned to attract investors.

The association remains committed to strengthening investment regulations and improving capital allocation to foster a thriving private capital market.

The success of VCTF’s new leadership will ultimately be measured by its ability to implement these strategic priorities effectively.

GVCA and the wider private capital industry are eager to collaborate in ensuring that private investment continues to drive economic transformation, unlock opportunities for local entrepreneurs, and create sustainable employment.

With strong leadership and sound financial management, Ghana is well-positioned to solidify its status as a leading investment destination in Africa.

2024/25 Ghana Premier League: Week 24 Match Report

0

Dreams FC secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Hearts of Oak in Round 24 of the Ghana Premier League at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, March 15, 2025, marking their first win over the Phobians since May 2021.

Abdul Razak Salifu’s early strike proved decisive, as Hearts failed to capitalize on their dominance, especially in the second half.

Dreams made two changes from their previous match, introducing Abdul Razak Salifu and Aziz Musibau. The tactical adjustments paid off almost immediately, as Salifu struck in the 3rd minute to stun the home side.

Despite enjoying possession, Hearts struggled to break down a resilient Dreams defence in the first half.

They registered four shots on target but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Gidios Aseako.

The Phobians intensified their attack after the break, launching 12 goal attempts, but their finishing let them down.

Dreams held firm without a single shot on goal in the second half. Aseako delivered a heroic performance, making five crucial saves to preserve his team’s lead.

The visitors’ resolute defending saw them secure only their second away victory this season and in 17 attempts extending from last term.

The victory also ended a long winless run over the Accra giants as Dreams climbed up to the 12th position on the league table, whereas Hearts remain in 3rd place.
