Galamsey fight: We’ll restrict excavator imports

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced that the government is actively considering placing restrictions on the importation of excavators into the country.

The proposed measure is part of a broader effort to curb the activities of illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators, whose operations continue to pose a grave threat to Ghana’s environment and water resources.

Speaking at a press engagement on Thursday, the minister expressed deep concern over the alarming scale of environmental destruction caused by unregulated mining operations and emphasised the need for decisive, structural action.

According to the minister, one of the key enablers of illegal mining is the unchecked influx of heavy-duty machinery—especially excavators—which are frequently deployed deep within forest reserves and along riverbanks to conduct illicit mining activities with devastating ecological consequences.

“We believe that the time has come for us to basically restrict the import of excavators in this country. It doesn’t make any sense that the third most valuable things we import in this country to the tune of $6.2 billion is excavators, which mainly are brought here to destroy our forest reserves and destroy our water bodies and kill all of us. This must stop and I believe that effort is ongoing.”

He further stated that the restriction would not be aimed at crippling legitimate businesses or construction firms but would target loopholes that have allowed mining-related machinery to slip into the wrong hands and be used for illegal purposes.

AfCFTA or crisis? Ghana faces tough choices amid US tariff war

0

Ghana’s $4.3 billion export industry is at a crossroads as the United States slaps a 10% tariff on Ghanaian products, a move that could cripple industries benefiting from duty-free access under
African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

For years, Ghanaian exporters, especially in the textile, cocoa, and agricultural sectors, have relied on the US market to stay competitive. Now, as tariffs threaten to erode their pricing advantage, experts say AfCFTA is Ghana’s best bet for survival.

However, the Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused the government of neglecting AfCFTA, citing inadequate funding and policy direction. While the previous administration launched a National AfCFTA Policy Framework, the current budget fails to prioritise its implementation, raising concerns that Ghana is not positioned to take full advantage of intra-African trade.

A well-implemented AfCFTA strategy could help Ghanaian businesses pivot away from US dependency by unlocking continental trade opportunities. The apparel industry, for instance, could target South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, while processed cocoa and yams could find new markets in North and East Africa.

Yet, the biggest challenge remains government inaction. Industry players argue that without investment in trade infrastructure, financial support for exporters, and aggressive market expansion efforts, Ghana may lose out on the full benefits of AfCFTA.

The US tariffs serve as a wake-up call—Ghana must decide whether to cling to an uncertain future in Western markets or fully embrace the AfCFTA vision. The next few months will be crucial in determining whether Ghana’s export sector sinks under external pressure or rises through intra-African trade resilience.

No one invited me – Ntim Fordjour dismisses claims, challenges Kwakye Ofosu

0

Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, John Ntim Fordjour Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, John Ntim Fordjour

The Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, John Ntim Fordjour, has fiercely dismissed claims that he was invited by security agencies but failed to honor the invitation.

In a post on X, he challenged the Minister of State in Charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu to produce proof of such an invitation.

“Kwakye Ofosu lied when he claimed I’ve been invited by security agencies and failed to attend upon their invitation. No security or intelligence agency has ever invited me to assist them with any information. I dare Kwakye Ofosu to produce a copy of such an invitation,” he stated.

Ntim Fordjour further accused the government and the NDC Parliamentary Caucus of deliberately blocking a joint security briefing that could have allowed for collaboration between security agencies and Parliament on critical national security issues.

“When I wrote to call for a joint security briefing, which would have afforded the security and intelligence agencies the opportunity to collaborate with me, share further information, and provide updates on investigations into specific cases, the NDC Parliamentary Caucus and the government blocked the briefing. They shielded the security and intelligence agencies from accountability and denied them the opportunity to collaborate with me. What are they hiding?”

He also raised concerns over the government’s silence regarding the status of 12 containers filled with gold and cash, which were allegedly seized by National Security on February 9. Additionally, he questioned the lack of updates on recent high-profile cocaine busts worth a combined $500 million.

“While Kwakye Ofosu confirmed my claims about the entry and departure of the two suspicious flights as true, the reasons he provided regarding their purpose are incoherent, questionable, and cannot be taken seriously.

The government has yet to provide any update on the status of the 12 containers filled with gold and currency confiscated by National Security on February 9.

Furthermore, the government has failed to offer updates on investigations into the high-profile cocaine busts totaling approximately $500 million ($350 million and $150 million, respectively).”

Ntim Fordjour insists that the government’s reluctance to provide transparency on these matters raises serious concerns about the country’s vulnerability to illegal activities.

“In view of the above, and the disingenuous response from the government spokesperson, it is clear they are bent on hiding information and evading accountability. Our country cannot be allowed to suddenly become a hub for cocaine trafficking and money laundering. They must come again.”

Nii Lante Vanderpuye unimpressed despite Black Stars’ back-to-back wins

Ghana’s former Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, is urging the Black Stars to step up their game despite their recent victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The team secured a 5-0 win over Chad and a 3-0 victory against Madagascar, but Vanderpuye remains unconvinced about the team’s overall development.

“I think the two matches we have played so far don’t give me any indication that there has been an improvement in the team, even though we’ve won those matches by wide score lines,” Vanderpuye said.

He emphasized his desire to see a Ghana national team that can strike fear into the hearts of opposing teams, regardless of their reputation. “I want to see a Ghana national team that will strike fear or put every other team on alert that they are playing Ghana, whether you are Argentina or Brazil.”

The victories have boosted Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the team leading Group I with 15 points.

Vanderpuye also expressed concerns over the current Ghana Football Association administration, stating that its structure makes it nearly impossible for any head coach to succeed with the Black Stars.

Premix fuel pricing to be standardised nationwide – Dafeamekpor

0

The National Chairman of the Premix Fuel Committee, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has outlined the committee’s key priorities, emphasising the operationalisation of automated stations and ensuring uniform pricing of premix fuel across the country.

These measures aim to address challenges faced by fisherfolk and boat owners who rely on the product.

Speaking on the committee’s agenda on the Channel One Newsroom on Thursday April 3, Dafeamekpor highlighted the progress made in automating vending points, with 30 stations currently operational and plans to activate 80 more.

“Operationalisation of the vending points helps to reduce the participation of middlemen who naturally will want to purchase the fuel, hoard it and up the prices before selling to the final end users who are fisherfolk as well as our boat owners who ferry our people across the Volta Lake and in the coastal areas,” he explained.

Dafeamekpor also stressed the importance of price uniformity, noting that the committee has issued strict directives to ensure compliance.

“The other thing that will be top priority for my committee will be to ensure uniformity in pricing of the product across the country. We had our first quarter meeting today and have given strong directives and guidelines that any landing beach committee, whether inland or marine, that would sell this product to the boat owners and the fishermen above the price stipulated by the committee will be sanctioned,” he stated.

He warned that non-compliance would result in severe consequences, including the dismissal of committee members found guilty of overpricing.

Dafeamekpor also said the committee will train the landing beach committees to help educate the fisherfolks and stakeholders.

The committee’s initiatives are expected to enhance efficiency, curb exploitation by middlemen, and provide much-needed relief to those who depend on premix fuel for their livelihoods.

Chelsea boost top-four hopes to pile pressure on Postecoglou

0

Enzo Fernandez scored as Chelsea beat Tottenham to move into the Premier League’s top four and boost their hopes of Champions League football next season.

Defeat for Spurs piled more pressure on head coach Ange Postecoglou – whose side stay 14th, and remain on course to finish outside the top 10 for the first time since 2008.

The Blues, boosted by the returns from injury of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, dominated proceedings at Stamford Bridge, but they were frustrated by a goalless first-half having missed plenty of opportunities.

They carried the same threat after the interval and were rewarded in the 50th minute when Fernandez headed home Palmer’s inch-perfect delivery.

Moises Caicedo swept a crisp volley past Guglielmo Vicario moments later, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside in the build-up following a four-minute VAR review.

Tottenham then had an equaliser ruled out after substitute Pape Matar Sarr fired in from 20 yards out.

Referee Craig Pawson, advised by VAR to have a look at the pitchside monitor, overturned his decision after watching the Spurs midfielder catch Caicedo with his studs before taking aim.

The result moves Chelsea to fourth in the Premier League, knocking reigning champions Manchester City down to fifth and Newcastle to sixth.

Maresca’s side set up for big run-in

The Blues were in scintillating form from the off as they returned to action following the recent international break.

They were unlucky not to score in the first minute, when Jackson hit the post after Micky van de Ven’s attempted clearance rebounded off the forward’s shin.

The home fans were quick to celebrate when they though Malo Gusto had scored with a fierce strike before quickly realising it had rifled into the side-netting.

Vicario made a superb fingertip save to deny Jadon Sancho, while Jackson continued to cause Van de Ven and Cristian Romero all sorts of problems with darting runs towards the Tottenham penalty area.

And it was the two Spurs centre-backs who were caught off guard when Fernandez drifted easily between the pair and leapt highest to direct Palmer’s cross in.

A strong end to the season is well within reach for Enzo Maresca’s side.

Bolstered by the return of key players from injury, a Champions League spot is in their sights, while the chance for silverware in the Europa Conference League seems a genuine possibility.

Pressure piles on Postecoglou

After looking lacklustre for much of the game, Tottenham’s surge forward in search of an equaliser came all too late.

Son Heung-min was agonisingly close to netting an 89th-minute leveller as he slided in to reach Brennan Johnson’s cross, but Robert Sanchez scrambled across his goalline brilliantly to deny the Spurs captain.

While Chelsea constantly hassled their visitors, Tottenham looked panicked in defence, sloppy in possession and struggled to fashion many clear-cut chances.

Vicario, meanwhile, provided little reassurance to his backline with multiple wayward passes and an inability to command his box convincingly.

Frustrations boiled over on the stroke of half-time when Cristian Romero’s shove on Levi Colwill caused a maul as players squared up to each other.

But Tottenham were unable to channel their emotions into anything worthwhile.

And in the wake of this defeat, Postecoglou’s future at the club becomes all the more uncertain.

Some away fans directed chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” at the Australian manager, who becomes the first-ever Spurs boss to lose his first four fixtures against Chelsea.

But there is still hope for success in the Europa League – and a first trophy since 2008 – with a quarter-final first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt next week.

Trump tariffs provoke world condemnation and fears of a $2,300 iPhone

0

Countries around the world threatened to ratchet up a trade war with the United States as President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs ignited fears of steep price increases in the world’s largest consumer market.

The penalties announced by Trump on Wednesday triggered a plunge in world financial markets on Thursday and drew condemnation from other leaders reckoning with the end of a decades-long era of trade liberalisation.

But there were conflicting messages from the White House about whether the tariffs were meant to be permanent or were a tactic to win concessions, with Trump saying they “give us great power to negotiate.”

The U.S. tariffs would amount to the highest trade barriers in more than a century: a 10% baseline tariff on all imports and higher targeted duties on some of the country’s biggest trading partners.

That could jack up the price for U.S. shoppers of everything from cannabis to running shoes to Apple’s iPhone. A high-end iPhone could cost nearly $2,300 if Apple passes the costs on to consumers, based on projections from Rosenblatt Securities.

Businesses raced to adjust. Automaker Stellantis said it would temporarily lay off U.S. workers and close plants in Canada and Mexico, while General Motors (GM.N), opens new tab said it would increase U.S. production.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the United States had abandoned its historic role as a champion of international economic cooperation.

“The global economy is fundamentally different today than it was yesterday,” he said as he announced a limited set of countermeasures.

Elsewhere, China vowed retaliation for Trump’s 54% tariffs on imports from the world’s No. 2 economy, as did the European Union, which faces a 20% duty.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for European countries to suspend investment in the United States.

Other trading partners, including Japan, South Korea, Mexico and India, said they would hold off on any retaliation for now as they seek concessions.

Washington’s allies and rivals alike warned of a devastating blow to global trade. Japan, one of the United States’ biggest trading partners and its largest foreign investor, is now facing a “national crisis”, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told parliament.

The tariffs “clearly represent a significant risk to the global outlook at a time of sluggish growth,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in a statement.

“It is important to avoid steps that could further harm the world economy. We appeal to the United States and its trading partners to work constructively to resolve trade tensions and reduce uncertainty,” Georgieva said.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and senior trade adviser Peter Navarro both told cable news programs on Thursday the president would not back off, and that the tariff increases were not a negotiation.

Trump then appeared to contradict them, telling reporters, “The tariffs give us great power to negotiate. Always have. I used it very well in the first administration, as you saw, but now we’re taking it to a whole new level.”

Stocks suffered a global meltdown, the U.S. dollar crumbled and oil prices were set for their worst week in months as analysts warned the tariffs could upend supply chains, hurt corporate profits and push the world economy towards recession.

The Dow fell nearly 4%, its biggest one-day percentage loss since June 2020. The S&P 500 lost nearly 5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq declined nearly 6%, its worst day in percentage terms since the pandemic era of March 2020.

American companies with significant overseas production took a hit. Nike shares lost 14% and Apple fell 9%.

Asian shares struggled to recover as their markets opened on Friday with Japan’s Nikkei down 1.85%, extending its 2.8% slide from Thursday. Chinese markets were closed for a holiday.

U.S. tariff hike exposes Ghana’s weak export strategy – Minority Caucus

0

The country’s fragile export strategy has been laid bare as the United States slaps a 10% tariff on Ghanaian goods, a move the Minority Caucus in Parliament says could cripple key industries and threatens thousands of jobs.

The Caucus has condemned the government’s lack of a clear policy response, warning that exporters, especially those in the apparel, cocoa, and yam sectors, will bear the brunt of this sudden trade shift.

The tariff, announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, comes as a retaliation against Ghana’s 17% average tariff on U.S. imports.

While it remains unclear if the measure will directly affect Ghana’s African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) status, the financial implications are already raising alarms.

Under AGOA, Ghana enjoys duty-free access to the U.S. market for over 6,700 products, including textiles, agricultural goods, and manufactured exports.

The imposition of tariffs means Ghanaian products, once competitive due to AGOA benefits, will now face additional costs, making them less attractive in the U.S. market.

Key Sectors at Risk

Apparel Industry: Over 5,000 young workers rely on exports to the U.S. The new tariff threatens jobs and profits in a sector that has long struggled to gain a foothold in international trade.

Cocoa Exports: While raw cocoa beans enter duty-free, processed cocoa products (powder and paste)—which make up nearly 30% of cocoa exports—stand to be hit by the tariff, reducing incentives for value addition.

Yams: A staple of Ghanaian exports to the U.S., yams currently enjoy AGOA benefits. A 10% tariff could erode this advantage, reducing the appeal of Ghanaian yams in American markets.

The Minority Caucus has accused the government of failing to prioritise export diversification, leaving Ghana overly dependent on the U.S. market.

The NPP administration had initiated policies under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost intra-African trade and reduce exposure to global trade shocks.

However, the NDC government, they argue, has neglected these efforts, offering no clear plan to counter the U.S. tariff.

“How will the government respond to this sweeping tariff? We have yet to see any specialized program to support exporters or expand Ghana’s production base,” the Minority statement read.

Despite efforts to increase exports to ECOWAS countries through the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative—leading to a rise in the trade of iron rods, ceramics, and plastics—the broader export strategy remains weak.

The Caucus also noted that budget allocations for AfCFTA implementation have been disappointingly low, signaling a lack of commitment to economic resilience.

To cushion the impact of the tariffs and safeguard Ghana’s exporters, the Minority Caucus is demanding immediate action:

• Diversification of Export Markets: Fast-track AfCFTA implementation and reduce overreliance on the U.S. by boosting intra-African trade.

• Government Support for Exporters: Provide financial assistance, training, and market intelligence to help businesses adjust.

• Product Diversification & Value Addition: Shift focus from raw material exports to processed goods to increase profitability and global competitiveness.

• Diplomatic Engagement: Open urgent negotiations with the U.S. to clarify the tariff’s impact on AGOA and push for a reduction or elimination of the new charges.

• Policy Clarity: The government must provide a definitive roadmap on how it plans to navigate the tariff shock and protect Ghanaian businesses.

FIPAG wanted to silence me because I was outspoken

Ghanaian actress and filmmaker Yvonne Nelson Ghanaian actress and filmmaker Yvonne Nelson

Ghanaian actress and filmmaker Yvonne Nelson has accused the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) of attempting to sabotage her career when she ventured into filmmaking.

In a candid interview on The Career Trail show on Joy News and Joy Learning TV, Nelson disclosed that FIPAG banned her after she raised concerns about industry practices.

“I was banned by a group of men in the industry. They call themselves FIPAG. Something happened on set, and they got together. When you are a woman and you are vocal; when you are unhappy with things around you and want to talk about them, people just don’t like that,” she said

Nelson said she believes the ban was an intimidation tactic to silence her because she was a woman in the industry.

“That was what I faced because they felt like I complained about everything that I was unhappy about. I believe in their minds, they wanted to intimidate, they wanted to end my dreams, they wanted to teach me a lesson, and they wanted to silence me as a young girl in the industry,” she added.

However, rather than succumb to the pressure, Nelson channeled her frustration into launching her own production company, YN Productions. With support from industry allies like Kelvin Kobiri (now in ministry) and Abdul Salam, she ventured into filmmaking.

“I just decided that I can do my own thing. I can produce my own movies. Why don’t I try? So, I registered a company around that time, and I started producing my movies,” she explained.

By investing in the training and development of Medical Laboratory Scientists, we pave the way for more effective responses to infectious disease outbreaks and the advancement of global health security.

Black Stars advised to develop ‘fear factor’ in upcoming games

0

Ghana’s former Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, is urging the Black Stars to step up their game despite recent wins in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The team secured a 5-0 victory over Chad and a 3-0 win against Madagascar, but Vanderpuye remains unconvinced about the team’s overall development.

“I want to see a Ghana national team that will strike fear or put every other team on alert that they are playing Ghana, whether you are Argentina or Brazil,” Vanderpuye emphasised.

He expressed doubts about the team’s progress, stating that the two matches played so far don’t indicate any improvement, despite the wide score lines.

The victories have boosted Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the team leading Group I with 15 points.

Vanderpuye’s comments highlight the need for the Black Stars to develop a “fear factor” that will make them a formidable opponent in upcoming games.

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the transportation of electricity cables believed to belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The suspects, Mohammed Sulemana and Iddrisu Basit, both driver’s mates of an articulated truck, were arrested on April 1, 2025, at Gomoa Awombrew in the Central Region.

A press release issued by the Police Public Affairs Directorate and shared with the Ghana News Agency stated that the truck, with registration number GC 7410-11, was found parked at Gomoa Awombrew, loaded with 28 rims of ECG cables.

“Officials from ECG, led by their Operations Officer, Mr. David Ackom, confirmed the ownership of the cables but stated that no such consignment was expected in the area,” the release noted.

“The truck remains under police guard at Gomoa Awombrew, and efforts are ongoing to arrest the truck driver, Zibo Imoro, who is currently on the run,” it added.

Further investigations are ongoing.

Zambians protest over heinous child rape reports

0

A protest march has been held in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, against a recent spate of reports of men raping children.

Over the last two months, Zambians have been shocked by several cases of child rape, some of which resulted in death.

Among the most horrific reports was that of a father allegedly raping his seven-year-old daughter while she was admitted to hospital for cancer treatment.

There have also been reports of a five-year-old allegedly being raped by a gang of four men, while another father was jailed for raping and infecting his six-year-old with genital warts, a sexually transmitted infection.

Zambia’s Justice Minister Princess Kasune-Zulu has called for the castration of child rapists as an extreme measure to deter perpetrators and protect children from abuse.

“How low can we go as a nation? How low can we go as a society? What is happening is sickening. It is beyond laws now – it is up to us as Zambians to interrogate why our morals have decayed,” she recently told parliament.

Following the reports, civil society organisations, musicians, and individuals held a protest march on Thursday, calling for the government to amend the law to introduce tougher punishments for child rapists.

In a petition handed to Vice-President Mutale Nalumango, they demanded the law be changed so that those accused of child rape are not granted bail.

In response, Nalumango said the issue concerns everyone and that Zambians must take a stand.

A musician who took part in the protest march told the BBC that “we need to create a safe environment for our children”.

Daputsa Nkhata-Zulu, also known as Sista D, added that child rapists should be castrated “for the safety of children and also to deprive them of the pride of manhood because they don’t deserve it.”

In just the last three months of 2024, Zambia recorded more than 10,000 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) involving children, according to the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation. These were mostly in the capital, Lusaka.

More than 32,000 people received counselling for GBV last year, according to the Zambia Police 2024 annual GBV data analysis.

New police commanders have three months to deliver or be transferred – Muntaka

0

Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has stated that police commanders who have been newly transferred to mining areas will be transferred again if they fail to deliver within months.

According to him, to ensure accountability, the newly assigned officers will undergo a three-month performance review.

“The new ones we are sending there will be transferred after three months if they don’t perform. We will keep making changes until we see results,” he emphasized in a statement

The minister has issued a directive for the immediate transfer of all regional, divisional, and district police commanders stationed in mining areas.

He disclosed that he had instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to enforce the directive without delay.

“I have ordered the IGP to transfer all police commanders in mining areas and bring in new ones. So, if you are a regional, divisional, or district police commander serving in a mining area, you will be replaced with immediate effect,” he stated.

The Minister explained that the decision was necessary due to the prolonged presence of certain officers in these regions without significant progress in addressing illegal mining. He stressed that the shake-up is part of broader measures to curb the menace.

Under the new policy, officers removed from their positions will be reassigned to areas without mining activities, allowing fresh personnel to take charge in the fight against illegal mining.

Galamseyers in the forest are NPP members working to disgrace Mahama – A Plus alleges

Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, has accused the New Patriotic Party of intensifying illegal mining activities in an attempt to create disaffection for the ruling government.

Speaking on Adom FM on April 3, 2025, A Plus, as he is popularly known, supported his claims by indicating how the menace of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, appears to have intensified despite the government’s efforts to combat it.

He further alleged that the situation is being strategically orchestrated by certain individuals to create a negative perception of the Goldbod policy introduced by the government and the president.

“The illegal miners seized the forests to mine immediately the NDC came into power to disgrace President Mahama. The NPP personalities who were involved in illegal mining and failed to desist despite several calls have intentionally intensified the activity. All the galamseyers are NPP members. They are doing that intentionally to cause disaffection for the NDC and the Goldbod policy,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has described illegal miners as terrorists, stating that their activities are putting the lives of citizens at risk.

“We can’t allow a few people to make money at the expense of millions of Ghanaians and kill us. We must now begin to see them as dangerous terrorists who are killing us,” he said at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

Despite his strong condemnation of illegal mining, the minister reaffirmed the government’s support for responsible small-scale mining, emphasising the importance of ensuring that such activities are conducted in a legal and sustainable manner.

“If anybody wants to do genuine small-scale mining, this government is committed to guiding them, giving them licenses, and guiding them on the path of doing small-scale mining in a more responsible and sustainable manner,” he assured.

A policeman, identified as Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, met his untimely death on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, when he drowned in River Offin at Assin Asaman in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region.

The unfortunate incident occurred during an anti-illegal mining or ‘galamsey’ operation conducted by the Central North Regional Police Command.

It was part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the region.

According to sources, illegal mining activities have destroyed the environment, polluted water bodies, and degraded farmlands in the area.

To this end, the police in the area launched a swoop to clamp down on the illegal activities.

According to sources, when the police arrived at the site at Assin Asaman, the illegal miners, upon seeing the security men, fled to the opposite side of the riverbank.

In an attempt to seize and destroy mining equipment being used by the miners including Changfang machines and water pumps, Constable Dogbe, lost his balance and fell into the river.

DAILY GUIDE learnt that colleagues of Constable Dogbe tried to rescue him, but unfortunately, he was swept away by the strong current.

A search operation was immediately launched, and after four hours, his lifeless body was retrieved from the river.

Meanwhile, the Central North Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to fighting illegal mining and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

It would be recalled that a similar incident happened in the Western Region about a decade ago when two soldiers of the Western Naval Command drowned in the Pra River during an operation by a combined police/military team to flush out illegal gold miners.

Former ECG boss Dubik Mahama claims ‘missing’ containers are still at the port

0

Former ECG MD, Samuel Dubik Mahama Former ECG MD, Samuel Dubik Mahama

Former Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama has adamantly insisted that the 1,346 contentious containers that were reported missing from ECG’s inventory have not left the Tema Port.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, he rejected claims that the containers had vanished and emphasised that port authorities still have control over them.

“Honestly I want to say that I believe strongly that the containers are at the Port. There are only two entities that have control of those containers. Let’s bear in mind that the Minister went to the Port, a restricted area. Containers have a formular as to how they leave the port. This conversation would have been different if we were saying that the containers were in the custody of ECG and got lost, but that is not the conversation. The conversation is that those containers are at the Port, so they are in the custody of the GPHA and Ghana Customs.”

His comments follows a report by the Energy Minister’s technical committee, which disclosed that over 1,300 containers belonging to the ECG could not be accounted for.

The missing containers sparked worries about potential corruption, smuggling, or poor supply chain management at ECG.

Dubik Mahama questioned why ECG’s containers would be put up for auction without the company’s knowledge, adding that unpaid duties shouldn’t result in covert disposal.

“ECG hasn’t paid its duties. So why auction a container belonging to ECG without notifying ECG? Because in my candid opinion, that’s the only way a container can leave the port,” he stated.

Asked if he’s saying the containers left the port without ECG’s knowledge, Dubik Mahama swiftly responded: “I will say if they have left…I will be very careful to say if they have left. Containers don’t get missing. A container is not like a piece of paper that you will fold and throw away. For international supply chain logistics, a container has a unique number.”

Meanwhile, the energy minister, John Jinapor, has announced that his ministry has taken additional steps to uncover the whereabouts of the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers.

In an interview with the media on Wednesday, April 2, the minister disclosed that his office has formally requested the Attorney General to conduct further investigations, with the possibility of initiating legal action against those responsible.

“We’ve written to the Attorney General to conduct further investigations with the possibility of taking the culprits in court,” he stated.

Additionally, Mr Jinapor disclosed that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has been tasked with carrying out a forensic investigation to trace the missing containers and establish accountability.

To prevent further losses, the minister noted that he has personally written to the National Security Secretariat, seeking their assistance in securing the remaining containers to facilitate a proper reconciliation process.

“Some containers are still scattered. We need to secure them so that we can put them to good use while we pursue those that cannot be accounted for,” he added.

Some of the containers have already been discovered, and some people—including Chinese and Ghanaians—have been arrested.

Hearts Of Oak Target Victory Against Nations FC

0

Hearts of Oak will seek to end a three-game winless streak when they host Nations FC at the Tuba Astro Turf on Thursday, April 3 in a rescheduled match.

The game was rescheduled to take place on Thursday due to a change in venue as a result of the National Sports Authority (NSA) denying Hearts of Oak the chance to host the game at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Phobians, currently 4th with 37 points, have been solid at home, winning four of their last five matches. Coach Aboubakar Ouattara’s side will be eager to return to winning ways.

Nations FC, sitting 5th with 36 points, have struggled recently with just one win in five games. However, they remain the league’s best away side, collecting 18 points from 12 away matches.

Despite failing to win their last three away games, Kasim Mingle Ocansey’s men will aim to rediscover their form in Accra.

The last time these teams met at Hearts’ home ground, the Phobians secured a 2-0 victory. With both teams battling for a top-four spot, this fixture promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Zoomlion’s Sanitation Infrastructure Unmatched in West Africa – Minister Hails Investment

0

Accra, April 03, GNA- The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), Mr Ahmed Ibrahim has hailed Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the unparalleled sanitation infrastructure in West Africa amidst a strategic collaboration to tackle Ghana’s waste management crisis, particularly plastic.

The Minister speaking to the media in Accra, underscored the indispensability of Zoomlion’s cutting-edge facilities, which positioned Ghana as a regional leader in sustainable waste solutions.

“The kind of sanitation infrastructure that Zoomlion has invested – both in municipal solid, liquid waste and robustness of the recycling waste management plants is so unparalleled,” he noted.

Mr Ahmed commended Zoomlion for it’s nationwide network of modern recycling plants, faecal waste management systems, and sewage-to-resource technologies, which converted waste into compost and charcoal.

These facilities, he noted, aligned with Ghana’s 2016 ban on ocean dumping of faecal waste, a policy enacted under former President John Dramani Mahama that halted hazardous coastal pollution.

“Before Zoomlion, faecal waste flowed freely into the sea that caused diseases such as cholera. Their infrastructure is now our lifeline,” he emphasized.

The Minister, however, raised alarms over a crippling 1.2 billion Ghana cedis debt owed to Zoomlion by the government, inherited from the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

According to him, this debt had been a significant concern for the government, adding that despite this, “we are closely collaborating with Zoomlion to address Ghana’s waste management challenges.”

“We are collaborating closely with Zoomlion to address waste management challenges in the country, particularly focusing on recycling plastic waste,” he added.

He stressed the necessity for the government to forge a solid partnership with private waste management firms and urged Zoomlion not to relent on their efforts to complete their waste infrastructure transformation agenda.

He called for intensified advocacy to curb reckless waste disposal, particularly in water bodies critical for domestic and agricultural use.

“Zoomlion’s work goes beyond just sweeping our streets, it’s about safeguarding national health and environmental sustainability,” he asserted, rallying support for stronger public-private partnerships.

Majority concerned about Afenyo-Markin’s leadership style

0

Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has raised concerns about the leadership style of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

According to Dafeamekpor, Afenyo-Markin’s approach has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle, with echoes of similar complaints during his tenure as Majority Leader.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Thursday April 3, Dafeamekpor highlighted recurring issues with Afenyo-Markin’s leadership tactics.

“We all are (concerned) because you see he is not the first minority leader we’ve had in this country and he has been a majority leader before. We had cause to complain about his style as a majority leader and now four months down the line he’s found himself on the other side of the aisle,” he stated.

Dafeamekpor pointed to Afenyo-Markin’s penchant for holding press conferences, dramatising issues, and walking out of parliamentary proceedings, even on matters initiated by his own side.

“You recall how as majority leader he was always holding press conferences even though he was in government. He will take matters to court and will dramatise and with the slightest matter on the floor they will walk out sometimes on their own business,” he added.

The Majority Chief Whip expressed hope that the parliamentary recess would provide Afenyo-Markin with an opportunity to reflect on his performance and make adjustments.

“We believe that this recess will offer him the opportunity to review his performance between January and the end of March and see whether there will be opportunities for him to mend the way he handles matters on the floor and also amend the way he conducts affairs among his people and between his people and us,” Dafeamekpor said.

France Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Its Sahara – French FM

0

Paris, April 03 – French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot reiterated France’s position, expressed at the highest levels of government, supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

“Just a few months ago, we made clear our position: the present and future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, as a direct consequence of the Moroccan autonomy plan,” Barrot stated during a hearing before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

“There are no other realistic or credible solutions today,” he stressed, emphasizing that this is part of “a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution within the framework of the United Nations, and we support UN efforts towards this dialogue.”

In this context, Barrot underlined that he will have the opportunity “to discuss this in a few days with my Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in Paris.”

French President Emmanuel Macron had previously expressed this stance in a message to His Majesty King Mohammed VI in July 2024, affirming that “France considers that the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”

Macron had reaffirmed “the unwavering position of France on this issue of national security for the Kingdom” and asserted that his country “intends to act in alignment with this position both nationally and internationally.”

Macron also reaffirmed this position during a historic address before the Moroccan Parliament on October 29, as part of his state visit to the Kingdom.

“And I reaffirm it here before you. For France, the present and future of this territory lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty. Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this question must be resolved,” the French Head of State underlined.

Hearts' Konadu Yiadom (L) and Michael Ampadu (R) during the game Hearts’ Konadu Yiadom (L) and Michael Ampadu (R) during the game

Hearts of Oak’s struggles deepened after suffering yet another setback at the hands of Nations FC on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

Following the National Sports Authority’s decision to decline the Phobians’ request to play at the Accra Sports Stadium, the match was held at the Tuba Astroturf.

Unfortunately, Hearts of Oak fell short once again, losing 0-1, further adding to their mounting woes as pressure intensifies on the team.

In a bid to turn the club’s fortunes around, coach Aboubakar Ouattara fielded a strong lineup, with Kelvin Osei Asibey and Konadu Yiadom taking charge of the defense. Notably absent from the matchday squad was Benjamin Asare.

For Nations FC, captain Razak Simpson returned to lead the team and organize the defense, standing firm against Hearts of Oak’s attacking efforts.

The first half saw a tense, tactical battle. With both sides desperate for points, the intensity soared in the second half.

Ultimately, it took a moment of individual brilliance from Simpson, who unleashed a stunning strike from over 25 yards out. The goal, his fourth of the season, proved decisive as Nations FC held on to secure a vital three points.

The victory propels Nations FC to fourth place in the league with 39 points, while Hearts of Oak slip to sixth place with 37 points, further denting their hopes of claiming the league title.

Hearts of Oak have now managed just four points from their last five games, with one win, one draw, and three losses. The defeat marked their first loss to Nations FC in their last four encounters in the Ghana Premier League.

Ouattara’s men remain winless in their last four games as they prepare to face the 2023 champions, Medeama SC.

Govt bent on hiding information, evading accountability

0

Rev John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, has accused the government of deliberately withholding information and evading accountability in response to his claims regarding suspicious flights and other high-profile incidents.

In a statement sighted by Citi News on Thursday April 3, Fordjour criticised the government’s handling of the matter and challenged its transparency.

Fordjour refuted claims by government spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu that he had been invited by security agencies to assist with investigations but failed to comply.

“No security or intelligence agency has ever invited me to assist them with any information. I dare Kwakye Ofosu to produce a copy of such invitation,” he stated, adding that he remains open to collaborating with Parliament to fulfill President Mahama’s directive.

The Ranking Member also alleged that his request for a Joint Security briefing, which would have allowed security and intelligence agencies to share updates on investigations, was blocked by the NDC Parliamentary Caucus and the government. “What are they hiding?” he questioned.

Fordjour further criticised the government’s explanations regarding the entry and departure of two suspicious flights, describing them as “incoherent, questionable, and cannot be taken seriously.”

He also highlighted the government’s failure to address the status of 12 containers filled with gold and currencies confiscated by National Security on February 9, as well as investigations into cocaine busts worth $500 million.

Fordjour warned against Ghana becoming a hub for illicit activities such as cocaine trafficking and money laundering.

“Our country cannot be allowed to be suddenly turned into a hub for cocaine and money laundering. They must come again,” he asserted.

‘Some people who claim they’ve been called by God may be suffering from insanity’ – Expert

0

Mental health expert at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Francis Yeboah Mental health expert at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Francis Yeboah

A mental health expert at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Francis Yeboah, has warned the public against confusing symptoms of psychosis with spiritual revelations.

Speaking on Joy Prime on April 2, 2025, he explained that individuals who claim to hear from God may, in fact, be experiencing hallucinations and in need of medical attention.

Francis Yeboah pointed out that symptoms of psychosis, such as delusions, auditory hallucinations (hearing voices), and visual hallucinations (seeing things), can lead to behaviors that may be mistaken for spirituality.

“There are many people who claim that God has called them, but it’s not God, it’s insanity calling them. With auditory hallucinations, the person hears voices; with visual hallucinations, they see things. For example, they might say they see three people when, in reality, there are only two,” he said.

However, he explained that in highly religious societies like Ghana, such experiences are often mistaken for divine messages.

“People often give strange directions because we’ve made ourselves so spiritually minded that anything spiritual becomes unquestionable. When they give these directions, you might not even question their validity. But in psychiatric settings, we bring people back to reality,” he said.

Let us collaborate to strengthen security in Ghana- Muntaka urges Christian Religious Leaders

0

The Hon. Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has called for strengthening of security in the country through collaboration. He highlighted the crucial role of collaboration between the government and religious leaders in promoting peace, social cohesion and security across Ghana.

In an engagement with the Christian Religious Leaders in Kumasi, Hon. Muntaka acknowledged that maintenance of Peace and security in the country is a collective responsibility hence the need for engagement with key stakeholders to share ideas to promote peace and security.

‘Your influence in fostering peace and unity is invaluable. I urge you to continue preaching messages of love, forgiveness and hope from your pulpits. Together, we can create a Kumasi and indeed a Ghana that is safer, healthier and more secure for all,’ he stated.

Hon. Muntaka acknowledged the growing concern of drug abuse in the country, which threatens communities and endangers youth.  He urged Christian leaders to continue preaching messages of love, forgiveness, and hope, while also supporting initiatives that offer treatment and rehabilitation to those in need.

He sought partnership in bolstering the Ghana Prisons Service and Ghana National Fire Service to enable them address challenges like overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure.

Hon. Muntaka commended Christian bodies for their support, particularly the Church of Pentecost, which has built modern facilities to equip inmates with trades like farming and tailoring.

The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with Christian leaders, ensuring an open-door policy to foster peace and understanding.

‘Return our Common Fund!’ – Angry Manhyia South constituents taunt NAPO

0

Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, is under fire as some constituents demand an immediate refund of their District Assemblies Common Fund, which he allegedly used as a donation to support Adum Market fire victims.

In a video shared by GHOne on X on April 3, 2025, some residents expressed their displeasure over the matter and demanded the immediate return of GH¢100,000.00, an amount allegedly drawn from the constituency’s Common Fund to support the traders.

They lamented that the constituency was in need of infrastructure and other developmental interventions, which could have been addressed with the funds the former MP donated to the traders.

A constituent, who gave her name as Maame Buor, criticised the former MP, stating that he erred in using the Common Fund, which was meant for the development of the constituency, for donations.

“The money is meant for the constituency. Why would you use it to court praise from the public? You left the seat to the current MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. So, ideally, you should have left the funds for him to utilize in the constituency. He must return the money so it can be used for developmental projects. Donations for personal praise should come from his own funds,” she said.

Another constituent, Kwame Amo, added that Opoku Prempeh should have handed over the funds to the incumbent MP for developmental projects in the area instead of donating them to the Adum fire victims.

“I have no idea how the money ended up with him because he’s no longer our MP. I’m curious as to how the Common Fund was accessed by him. If he truly wanted to support the victims, it should have come from his personal funds.

“If the money was sitting in the account unused during his tenure, the right thing to do was to account for it and hand it over to the incumbent MP for developmental purposes. I disagree with him using the funds on his own volition as a donation to the Adum fire victims,” he said.

The former Manhyia South MP and running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 election flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, on April 2, 2025, donated GH¢50,000 and 500 bags of cement to support traders affected by the devastating fire at the Adum PZ Market in Kumasi.

His gesture follows a devastating fire that razed shops at the Adum Central Market on March 21, 2025.

The inferno destroyed properties and goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Victor Osimhen delivered a stunning performance on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, scoring twice to lead Galatasaray to a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahçe in the quarterfinals of the Turkish Cup, eliminating José Mourinho’s side from the competition.

The Nigerian forward opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a precise strike from the edge of the box, giving Galatasaray an early advantage.

He then doubled his tally in the 27th minute, confidently converting a penalty to extend his team’s lead to 2-0 before the halftime whistle.

However, tensions flared when Osimhen lost his composure after a rough tackle from Milan Škriniar, sparking a heated reaction. While he was still on the ground, Mert Müldür gestured for him to get up, seemingly implying he was exaggerating the foul, further escalating the situation.

His frustration boiled over as he confronted the Fenerbahçe players, refusing to back down despite his teammates’ attempts to restrain him.

Despite Fenerbahçe’s efforts, including pulling a goal back just before halftime, Galatasaray held firm to secure the win and advance to the semifinals. They are now determined to reclaim the Turkish Cup, a trophy they last won in 2019.

NEDCo to begin revenue mobilisation and loss control exercise from April 7

0

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (NEDCo) has announced the commencement of a general revenue mobilization and loss control exercise across its operational areas, effective April 7, 2025.

The initiative aims to recover arrears and curb illegal activities that contribute to revenue losses.

The exercise will target all categories of customers with outstanding bills, including private and state-owned accounts, except for a few critical exceptions.

Additionally, NEDCo will focus on addressing illegal and unauthorized electricity connections. The company has warned that those engaged in such activities will face legal action, with special security arrangements in place to arrest and prosecute offenders.

In support of the exercise, NEDCo has temporarily closed its Head Office and Area Offices to allow full staff participation, including top management. However, customer service centers, zonal offices, and third-party vendors will remain operational to address concerns such as reconnections.

Customers with unpaid bills have been urged to settle their accounts promptly to avoid disconnection and subsequent reconnection fees. Similarly, individuals involved in illegal connections have been advised to desist immediately to avoid legal consequences.

NEDCo assured the public that ongoing legal proceedings against offenders would not be affected by the exercise. The company also emphasised its commitment to engaging key stakeholders, including respected Palaces and Mosques, who have been informed and have expressed support for the initiative.

Maxwell K. Kotoka, NEDCo’s Manager of Corporate Communications, encouraged cooperation for the success of the exercise. “We can only serve you well when you use power decently and pay for same,” he stated.

This move forms part of NEDCo’s efforts to enhance operational efficiency and ensure sustainable power distribution across its service areas.

Ghana Evangelical Missions urges Ghanaians to embrace AI, technology for national development

0

President of the Ghana Evangelical Missions Association, Rev. Kwame Ahlijah, has called on Ghanaians to fully embrace technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as key drivers of national progress.

He warned that Africa is still suffering from the consequences of being left behind in the Industrial Revolution, and Ghana must not repeat history by failing to engage with AI and digital transformation.

Speaking at the 34th General Meeting of the society, Rev. Ahlijah cautioned that complacency and resistance to technological advancements will only widen Ghana’s gap in the global digital economy, making it harder for the nation to compete on the international stage.

“Technology is not the enemy—it is the future. If Ghana fails to harness AI, we risk being sidelined in the global economy,” he indicated.

He further called for strategic partnerships between the government, private sector, and missionary organizations, stressing that collaboration is essential for Ghana’s economic and social development.

“We must equip Ghanaians not just spiritually, but also intellectually and technologically, to compete on the global stage,” he added.

Addressing national security concerns, Reverend Enoch Nii Narh Thompson called for proactive peace building efforts, urging Christians to play a role in conflict resolution and reconciliation.

As part of its broader mission, the Evangelical Society of Ghana is expanding its nationwide outreach efforts.

The society aims to engage more communities, promote social transformation, and empower Ghanaians through faith-driven initiatives and technology integration.

Suspicious flights: No security agency has invited me

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, has refuted claims by government spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu that he was invited by security agencies to assist with investigations into allegations of suspicious flights.

Fordjour insists no such invitation was extended to him and has challenged Kwakye Ofosu to provide evidence of the alleged invitation.

In a statement sighted by Citi News on Thursday April 3, Fordjour criticised the government’s handling of the matter, accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus and the government of blocking a Joint Security briefing he had requested.

He argued that the briefing would have allowed security and intelligence agencies to collaborate with him and provide updates on investigations into the suspicious flights.

“What are they hiding?” he questioned.

Fordjour also pointed out inconsistencies in Kwakye Ofosu’s response, stating that while the government spokesperson confirmed the entry and departure of the two flights, the explanations provided for their purpose were “incoherent, questionable, and cannot be taken seriously.”

Additionally, Fordjour highlighted the government’s failure to address key issues, including the status of 12 containers filled with gold and currencies confiscated by National Security on February 9, as well as investigations into high-profile cocaine busts worth $500 million.

He accused the government of evading accountability and withholding critical information, warning against Ghana becoming a hub for illicit activities such as cocaine trafficking and money laundering.

“Our country cannot be allowed to be suddenly turned into a hub for cocaine and money laundering. They must come again,” Fordjour stated.

The suspects

An articulated truck transporting cables suspected to be part of the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers has been intercepted at Gomoa Awombrew in the Gomoa Central Constituency of the Central Region.

The Central Regional Police Command confirmed the story and said two suspects have been arrested in connection with the transportation of the cables

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the area Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, was the first to post the story on his Facebook wall.

According to him, the truck broke down in the community, and the residents, who were suspicious of its content, quickly alerted the Swedru Divisional Police Command.

The police, with the help of ECG officials, inspected the cargo, and the driver was unable to provide clear details about the goods’ origin or destination, while the waybill was also suspicious.

ECG officials, after a thorough check, confirmed the cables matched their missing stock, leading to the arrest of the two.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Sulemana and Iddrisu Basit, are both driver’s mates of the articulated truck.

The police said the truck, with registration number GC 7410-11, was found parked with 28 rims of ECG cables onboard.

According to a statement from them, ECG officials, led by their Operations Officer, David Ackom, confirmed the cables’ ownership but noted that no such consignment was expected in the area.

The truck is currently under police guard at Gomoa Awombrew while efforts are underway to arrest the truck driver, one Zibo Imoro, who is currently on the run.

This development comes amid growing controversy surrounding the disappearance of over 1,300 containers of ECG items at the Tema Port.

Following an intelligence-led operation by National Security, 14 individuals, including four Ghanaians and 10 Chinese nationals, have been arrested and are assisting with investigations.

West Ham coach admits challenge of Mohammed Kudus’ absence in defeat to Wolves

0

West Ham United’s head coach, Graham Potter, has expressed his disappointment over the absence of Mohammed Kudus following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night.

The Ghanaian international was surprisingly left out of the matchday squad, leading some fans to believe it was an April Fools’ Day prank.

However, Potter disclosed that Kudus suffered an injury during training on Monday, just a few days after returning from international duty.

The Hammers struggled without Kudus and lacked sharpness in attack, despite controlling large portions of the contest.

They succumbed to their second loss in three matches, with a 1-0 defeat against Wolves at the Molineux Stadium.

Although Potter praised his team’s ability to dictate play, the lack of creativity and clinical finishing proved costly, as Jørgen Strand Larsen’s deflected first-half effort secured all three points for Wolves.

Norway international forward, Jørgen Strand Larsen, scored the only goal of the game in the 21st minute.

Kudus has been an important player for West Ham, despite the team’s struggles in the English Premier League.

His injury is a significant blow to the team, and it remains unclear how long he will be sidelined.

Evan Ferguson, who started in place of the Ghanaian, squandered a glorious chance early on.

The Republic of Ireland forward, fresh from scoring during the international break, failed to capitalise on a prime opportunity before being substituted for Niclas Füllkrug.

Füllkrug, returning after three months out with a hamstring injury, provided a much-needed focal point and came close with a looping header that struck the crossbar.

Despite an improved second-half performance, West Ham couldn’t find an equaliser, as Emerson and Tomáš Souček both hit the side netting with promising late attempts.

Reflecting on the defeat, Potter acknowledged the challenges posed by Jean-Clair Todibo and noted that Kudus’ absence disrupted their game plan.

“It was difficult. We lost Mo (Kudus) to injury and Todibo as well, so we had to readjust quickly,” he shared on West Ham’s official website.

While Kudus’ form this season has been less influential compared to his electrifying debut season, where he scored eight goals and provided six assists, he currently has just three goals and one assist in 24 Premier League outings.

After breaking his 431-day international goal drought with Ghana, Kudus is eager to end his current 13-game barren run for West Ham.

On April 5, Potter hopes Kudus’ return against Antoine Semenyo’s AFC Bournemouth will inject the much-needed spark in the final third.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr side is reportedly preparing an £84 million bid for Mohammed Kudus.

The Saudi Pro League giants had attempted to sign the Ghanaian midfielder during the winter transfer window but were unsuccessful.

With Al-Nassr eager to strengthen their squad, Kudus could become the latest high-profile player to make the move to Saudi Arabia.

Ntim Fordjour peddled total falsehood about ‘suspicious flights’ at KIA – Kwakye Ofosu

0

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has accused the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour of deliberately spreading falsehoods regarding claims of “suspicious aircrafts,” he alleged  landed at the country’s Kotoka International Airport.

The Minister’s remarks come after Fordjour was invited to assist with investigations into the matter.

Fordjour demanded an urgent briefing on the cargo carried by two aircraft—AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B—suspected of transporting cocaine and cash into the country, triggering President John Dramani Mahama to order a probe into the claim.

Speaking on the issue on Thursday April 3, Ofosu alleged that Fordjour has since distanced himself from his earlier statements, claiming they were not his personal views but rather those of a committee he represented.

“I can report to you that because he knew he was peddling total falsehoods and lies, he now claims after being invited to assist with investigations that he was speaking on behalf of the committee that he was part of and that the views he expressed were not his personal views, so because of that he says he is unable to cooperate with the security agencies,” Ofosu stated.

The Minister further criticised Fordjour’s actions, asserting that his claims were baseless and aimed at undermining public confidence in the government.

“I say that he was peddling falsehood because the fact as they exist vary completely from the claims that he made. When he made that claim, he was only seeking to peddle falsehood in a bid to undermine the confidence that the people of Ghana have in this government,” he added.

Galamsey: 107 foreigners deported since I became minister

0

Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has disclosed that 107 foreigners have been deported since he assumed office, as part of the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Among those deported, 92 were Chinese nationals, with an additional 13 individuals set to be deported in the coming week.

Speaking on the issue during an engagement with Imams and Zongo Chiefs on Thursday, April 3, the Minister emphasised the severity of galamsey and its impact on Ghana.

“Galamsey is one of Ghana’s biggest challenges. We’ve seen that some Chinese and some foreign nationals engage in this illegality. So we have said that when such persons are caught engaging in such illegality like galamsey or fraud, we will deport them back to their countries,” he stated.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance approach to illegal mining, highlighting the swift action taken against foreign nationals involved in such activities.

“If we arrest any foreigner in that illegality, we will just deport the person,” he added.

ECOWAS delegation calls on Buffer Stock CEO

0

A delegation from the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has held discussions with the new leadership of National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) in Accra aimed at strengthening food security in Ghana and the sub-region.

The visit was also intended to consolidate existing relationship between Ghana’s National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) and Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The two-member visiting team also held similar discussions with Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku.
Since 2017, Ghana’s NAFCO has been holding emergency food stocks for the regional economic bloc after winning a competitive bid as part a comprehensive action for a regional food security reserve supported by the European Union (EU) and being implemented by the Lome-based RAAF.

The Executive Director of the ECOWAS Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF), Mr. Mohamed Zongo commended NAFCO and the Ghanaian government for being worthy partners in the food security agenda.

He said through the Regional Food Security Reserve concept, ECOWAS has carried out 23 interventions to forestall famine and insecurity in countries such as Niger, Mali, Sierra Leone, Cameroun and Ghana where some 70,000 metric tones of different grains and cereals were handed over to governments in beneficiary countries.

Mr. Zongo hinted of a decision by RAAF to scale-up its reserves in Ghana in the course of the year.

The Chief Executive Officer of NAFCO, commended ECOWAS for prioritizing the food security needs of the subregion and expressed the readiness of NAFCO to deepen its relations with RAAF for the common good of the subregion.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of NAFCO, Mr. Osmond Amuah asked RAAF to consider strategic supports to Ghana towards the enhancement of its storage facilities and management.

Mr. Zongo was accompanied by the Head of the Regional Food Security Reserve Division, Mr. MalickBen Iddris Lompo.

Present at the meeting were some management team members of NAFCO including Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel J.K Arthur; Head of Operations, Mr. Arnold Kojo Akah, Head of Finance, Mr. Titus Tawiah and Head of Human Resources, Mad. Rebecca Mensah.

In September last year, Ghana received 500 metric tonnes of cereals from the ECOWAS Regional Food Security Reserve to help its national response strategy following a drought that affected major grain supply areas in northern Ghana.

The delivery of maize, sorghum, millet, and rice increased the resilience of populations facing food insecurity.

The Reserve is the third pillar of ECOWAS’ regional storage strategy, adopted by its 15-member nations on February 28, 2013, in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire by ECOWAS Heads of States.

Maresca Silent On Chelsea Signing Sancho Permanently

0

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says Jadon Sancho “could do better” but insists it is “not the moment” to discuss the player’s future.

His comments follow reports the forward could return to Manchester United once his loan spell with the Blues is over at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old winger joined Chelsea on loan with a £25m obligation to buy but it has since emerged that there is a £5m penalty clause if they opt against signing him.

Sancho has scored just twice in 29 games since joining Chelsea and is on an 18-game goal drought in all competitions.

When asked if he wanted to sign Sancho permanently, Maresca said: “I’m completely focused about nine games, two months to go, I’m completely focused about that. Then what happens in summer, we’ll see.

“The Jadon situation doesn’t change. In terms of numbers, he could do better, no doubt. It is not just about Jadon but we have more players in the same situation.”

Chelsea host Tottenham in the Premier League on Thursday and Maresca’s squad is boosted by the return from injury of Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke.

The Italian said: “They are all good. It is good news. When they are not there for different reasons then we struggle.

Why Asiedu Nketiah blocked my ministerial appointment in the past

0

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ibrahim Ahmed, has revealed how the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, prevented him from securing a ministerial appointment during the previous NDC administration.

Speaking during an interview on Accra News, monitored by GhanaWeb on Thursday, April 3, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Banda recounted his journey in Parliament.

“I have been in Parliament for 17 good years, and it was during my 17th year that I nearly got a ministerial appointment. During my first term, I almost became a minister, but Asiedu Nketiah blocked it because he believed I was inexperienced at the time,” he stated.

Ahmed Ibrahim advised first-time Members of Parliament to seek mentorship from experienced lawmakers, emphasising that the right opportunities would come with time and dedication.

“So, I urge all first-timers to learn from the seniors and let them mentor you. I was part of the first 11 ministers appointed by President Mahama. Patience is a virtue in politics, and young politicians should not rush or put unnecessary pressure on themselves. Hard work speaks for itself,” he stated.
