Ghana hosts High-Level regional meeting on combating firearms trafficking

0

Ghana has taken a significant step in the fight against illicit firearms trafficking by hosting a 3-day high-level Regional Planning Meeting for Operation KAFO VI in Accra, which aims at dismantling arms networks and enhancing regional security.

Addressing participants, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said that ‘let this planning meeting not be remembered as another workshop. Let it be remembered as the beginning of a new phase in regional enforcement where we do not merely react to threats, but anticipate, prevent and dismantle them. We must see it through with unity, integrity and urgency.”

He stated that the meeting focuses on coordinating joint efforts to combat firearms trafficking and associated threats throughout the West African Sub-region and that Operation KAFO VI emphasises understanding the threat before it reaches borders and also empowers law enforcement officers with data, training and cooperation mechanisms.

Alhaji Muntaka added that the comprehensive training programme integrated into Operation KAFO VI will provide regional training of trainers, national-level capacity building and standardised tools for operational plans and threat assessments.

The operation also promotes gender balance, encouraging the inclusion of more qualified women in all areas, from planning to operations.

The meeting is expected to assist participating countries in identifying key border points for intervention and developing a united and strategic response to arms trafficking and violent extremism. The operation aims to build trust between national authorities, agencies and partners and to facilitate the sharing of intelligence and best practices.

In his welcome remarks, the Chief of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Ghana, Mr. Christoph Capelle, stated that the Regional Planning Meeting marks another milestone in the fight against illegal arms and crime in West Africa.

He noted that UNODC is providing technical assistance to Ghana because collaboration is essential and no country or agency can combat illicit firearms and crime alone, as the situation has become transnational and complex, requiring a collective effort.

The meeting is expected to bring together representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Diplomatic corps and participants from Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Togo.

Trump suspends new student visa appointments, Ghanaian applicants affected

0

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has directed American embassies around the world to halt new appointments for student visa interviews, as part of efforts to increase social media background checks for applicants.

In a memo sent to U.S. embassies and consulates, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the pause will remain in effect “until further guidance is issued.”

According to U.S. media reports, the move affects those applying for student and foreign exchange visas and could significantly impact visa processing timelines. However, students who already have scheduled appointments will not be affected and may proceed with their interviews.

The directive is likely to affect many Ghanaian students hoping to study in the United States, as they are required to attend visa interviews at the U.S. Embassy in Accra before traveling. Each year, hundreds of Ghanaian students enroll in American universities, contributing to a long-standing academic and cultural exchange between the two countries.

The memo also revealed that the U.S. is preparing to expand its vetting process to include stricter checks on applicants’ social media activity. It did not specify what kind of content or behavior would be flagged during this screening.

A spokesperson for the State Department, Tammy Bruce, defended the decision, stating: “We take very seriously the process of vetting who it is that comes into the country, and we’re going to continue to do that.”

The decision comes amid growing tension between the Trump administration and some top U.S. universities, particularly over issues like pro-Palestinian protests and alleged antisemitism on campus. President Trump has accused several elite institutions of having discriminatory admission policies and promoting anti-Israel sentiments.

The administration has previously taken aggressive steps against universities, including suspending the visas of some international students and cutting funding to certain institutions—moves that U.S. courts have occasionally blocked.

Harvard University, which has a large population of international students (over 25%), has been a primary target. The Trump administration recently tried to bar Harvard from enrolling foreign students or hosting visiting researchers, but the decision was blocked by a federal judge.

If these stricter visa measures are allowed to continue, they could pose serious challenges for Ghanaian students and others from around the world planning to pursue higher education in the U.S.

Wontumi hit with Exim Bank suit amidst EOCO, CID investigations

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Antwi Boasiako 'Wontumi' NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Antwi Boasiako ‘Wontumi’

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been served a writ of summons by Exim Bank, adding to his ongoing legal challenges following an intense interrogation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

The development was confirmed by Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, in an interview on Tuesday night.

According to Appiah-Kubi, the writ from Exim Bank was received on the afternoon of May 27, 2025, while Wontumi was undergoing questioning at EOCO.

“We have also received this afternoon a writ of summons from Exim Bank, and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow,” Appiah-Kubi stated, expressing confidence in mounting a defense.

“I am very hopeful that we will be able to mount a defense to the writ,” he added.

The EOCO interrogation centered on allegations related to Wontumi’s activities, though specific details of the charges were not disclosed by his lawyer during his engagement with the media on Tuesday night.

The session was so intensive that Wontumi was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment afterward, as confirmed by his lawyer.

“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” Appiah-Kubi said, noting that the interrogation was incomplete.

“We haven’t finished the interrogation, so we will come back to continue, hopefully tomorrow, if his condition improves. Otherwise, he will stay there until the doctors discharge him,” he said.

This latest development follows Wontumi’s recent brush with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday, May 26, 2025, where he was questioned over alleged illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

Wontumi was granted bail with two sureties after denying the allegations and presenting his mining license to prove his operations were legal.

Wontumi’s arrest and interrogation by EOCO sparked protests by NPP supporters outside the EOCO office in Accra, escalating into clashes with security personnel.

A JoyNews reporter, Latif Iddrisu, was assaulted while covering the unrest, and two police vehicles were reportedly vandalized.

The situation also led to the deployment of soldiers to the EOCO premises to ensure order as the tensions mounted.

Deregister drivers who resist fare cuts – CUTS International demands

Some drivers have refused to comply with the recent reduction in fares Some drivers have refused to comply with the recent reduction in fares

CUTS International, a public policy think tank and consumer protection advocate, has urged the government to take decisive action to ensure consumers benefit from the recent reduction in fuel prices.

It called for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to be empowered to deregister and ban commercial drivers who refuse to comply with the 15 percent fare reduction announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

A statement signed by Mr. Appiah Kusi Adomako, West Africa Regional Director of CUTS International, described the drivers’ resistance as exploitative and unfair to the commuting public.

The GPRTU announced the fare reduction, effective Saturday, May 24, 2025, but some transport unions and drivers have failed to implement it, citing unrelated operational concerns, such as the cost of engine oil and tires.

The statement noted that transport fares remain one of the largest daily expenses for millions of Ghanaians, and any attempt to suppress a legitimate reduction is unacceptable.

“Fuel prices have dropped significantly, and the GPRTU has taken the commendable step of recommending lorry fare reductions by 15 percent. It is only fair that passengers, many of whom are struggling with the high cost of living, should see the benefits of this reduction reflected in their daily transport costs,” the statement said.

To protect consumers and restore discipline in the transport system, CUTS International proposed three key measures, including deregistering and banning non-compliant drivers.

“MMDAs already have the mandate under local government laws to register and license commercial vehicles operating in their jurisdictions. The government should empower them to revoke the registration of drivers who refuse to comply with the new fare regime,” it stated.

It also recommended that compliant drivers be issued visible stickers as proof of adherence, allowing police and regulators to identify and sanction offenders.

CUTS urged the government to temporarily authorize public universities, including the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and University of Professional Studies, Accra, to deploy idle buses along affected routes to create a buffer for commuters and apply economic pressure on defiant operators.

The statement called for urgent investment and retooling of mass transport systems, such as Ayalolo and Metro Mass Transit (MMT), and the construction of dedicated bus lanes to improve reliability and efficiency.

“Globally, cities like London, New York, Seoul, and Berlin have strong public transport because their governments invest in it. Ghana must do the same,” it advised.

It noted that a strong state-run transport system would introduce healthy competition, improve service quality, and prevent arbitrary fare hikes.

Chairman Wontumi hospitalised after arrest – Lawyer says interrogation suspended

0

Legal counsel for the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed that his client has been hospitalised following his arrest and interrogation by state security officers.

Speaking to reporters after hours of legal and police proceedings, lawyer and NPP Member of Parliament Andy Appiah-Kubi revealed that Wontumi fell ill during the interrogation and was subsequently transferred to a hospital for medical attention.

“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” he said. “We haven’t finished with the interrogation, so we will come back to continue — hopefully tomorrow, if his condition improves. Otherwise, he will remain there until doctors discharge him.”

The dramatic turn of events follows the arrest of Chairman Wontumi under what NPP leaders have described as “intimidatory” circumstances.

According to party officials, Wontumi initially honoured a police invitation and was at the CID headquarters responding to questions when he was suddenly whisked away by heavily armed, masked officers and detained for further investigation.

While details of the allegations remain unclear, Mr Appiah-Kubi stated that the police had “preferred some allegations” against his client, to which he had already responded. However, the interrogation was interrupted due to his deteriorating health.

In a parallel development, Mr Appiah-Kubi also disclosed that a writ of summons from Exim Bank was served on Wontumi earlier in the day, introducing a civil legal dimension to the unfolding case.

“We have also received this afternoon a writ of summons from Exim Bank, and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow,” he said. “We are very hopeful that we’ll be able to mount a defence.”

He was keen to distinguish between the civil and criminal aspects of the ongoing issues.

“This is one of a supposed criminal investigation, but I am confident that we will be able to put up a defence,” he stated. “We consider the Exim Bank issue a civil matter, and that’s how we will respond to it in court.”

Chairman Wontumi’s hospitalisation adds a new layer of tension to a politically charged situation that has already triggered strong reactions from within the NPP.

Several party leaders, including National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, have denounced the arrest as politically motivated and reminiscent of the “dark days” of political intimidation.

As the party awaits further updates on Wontumi’s health and legal status, Mr Appiah-Kubi insisted the NPP will continue to cooperate with the process but will not be silenced.

“We’re cooperating. We believe in the rule of law,” he said.

The party says it will provide further updates as events unfold.

Bill to break Ghana School of Law monopoly to be moved under certificate of urgency

0

The Ghana School of Law is currently the only institution mandated to train lawyers in Ghana The Ghana School of Law is currently the only institution mandated to train lawyers in Ghana

The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has announced that the Legal Education Bill, aimed at decentralising legal education in Ghana, will be moved under a certificate of urgency in Parliament.

The South Dayi MP, speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, May 27, emphasized the urgency of reforming the country’s legal education system, describing it as a key political promise that cannot be delayed.

The proposed bill seeks to break the monopoly of the Ghana School of Law, commonly known as Makola, by allowing accredited university law faculties to train lawyers and conduct professional bar exams.

Dafeamekpor, who doubles as a lawyer, highlighted systemic issues in the current legal education framework, particularly the contentious and allegedly corrupted admissions process at the Ghana School of Law.

“We waged this war from about 2018 when intake to the law school became acrimonious, contentious, and eventually corrupted,” he stated.

Under the new legislation, universities with accredited LLB programs will be licensed to provide professional legal training, enabling them to compete with the Ghana School of Law.

The bill also proposes conducting bar exams twice a year—in January and June—to increase access for aspiring lawyers.

“Let every faculty accredited to run the academic LLB programs be accredited or licensed to train their own lawyers,” Dafeamekpor urged.

The MP underscored the bill’s significance, noting its role in addressing the broader need for legally trained professionals across various sectors, not just courtroom practice.

“You need lawyers who may not even be practitioners, but who have the legal mind to guide you,” he said.

Dafeamekpor revealed that the bill’s urgency stems from its status as a major political commitment of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Why not? I’m the Majority Chief Whip, and we are even minded to move this under a certificate of urgency. It is one of our major political promises, and we will deliver it,” he said.

The push for reform follows years of criticism over the Ghana School of Law’s limited intake and alleged admission irregularities. In 2021, only 790 out of over 2,000 candidates were admitted.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has confirmed that the Attorney General would present the bill during Parliament’s second meeting, which commenced on Tuesday.

NDC must prosecute Wontumi or risk Weak 2028 campaign in Ashanti Region

Mahdi Jibril [L] and Chairman Wontumi Mahdi Jibril [L] and Chairman Wontumi

Mahdi Jibril, the Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that if the John Mahama-led NDC government fails to prosecute the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the NDC will struggle to mount an effective campaign in the 2028 elections.

Speaking on Onua FM on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Mahdi Jibril said the government is determined to make an example of Wontumi to demonstrate how it will deal with individuals who receive government contracts but fail to deliver.

“Wontumi and the NPP should expect more arrests. For me, I expect more because this is just the beginning. If we are not able to thoroughly investigate and prosecute Wontumi, our campaign in the Ashanti Region will not be effective. We want to make more inroads in the Ashanti Region. We want the people there to know who is abusing their rights—those who are given contracts but fail to execute them, thereby making life difficult for the people. This is how we deal with such individuals. We want Ghanaians to know that the law works in Ghana.

“One of the issues that helped John Mahama’s campaign was the abuse of power. Ghanaians voted for John Mahama to reset this issue. We will not disappoint or fail Ghanaians on this matter.”

Chairman Wontumi was arrested and detained by EOCO after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Mahama must avoid IMF return to secure legacy – IEA Fellow

0

A Senior Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso, has urged President John Mahama to take bold, corrective measures to prevent Ghana from returning to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after the current programme concludes.

Dr. Antwi-Danso believes that repeated reliance on the IMF is largely due to excessive government spending—particularly in election years—which undermines fiscal discipline and fuels economic instability.

“The president has given indication that it is a legacy term. If it’s a legacy term then I suspect he must put things right so we don’t go back. It is a routine ritual, this is the 17th and there is no indication that this is going to be the end. It is because of the spending spree especially during election years,” he said.

Dr. Antwi-Danso emphasized that such spending is often not growth-oriented, warning that borrowing for consumption rather than investment only deepens the country’s financial vulnerabilities.

“During election years, we throw everything to the dogs and spend the way we spend and the spending is not such that it is bringing back the money we are spending. It is just for consumption. We borrow for consumption,” he added.

He called on the Mahama administration to enforce strict fiscal discipline and pursue structural reforms that would strengthen economic governance and reduce dependency on external support.

Ghana is currently implementing a $3 billion IMF-supported programme aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and achieving debt sustainability. The programme is scheduled to end next year.

However, some experts, including the Country Managing Partner of Deloitte Ghana, Daniel Kwadwo Owusu, have proposed extending the programme by one or two years, citing the progress made so far and the need to consolidate economic gains.

Suspended Chief Justice acting as if presumed guilty

0

Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has accused suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo of behaving in a manner suggestive of presumed guilt, following her strong condemnation of the committee investigating her potential removal from office.

Justice Torkornoo, in a supplementary affidavit filed at the Supreme Court, described the proceedings of the Justice Pwamang-led committee as a “mockery of justice” and a “ruse” aimed at unfairly removing her from office.

She further claimed that the process had violated her dignity and fundamental rights, describing her treatment as both inhumane and degrading.

Among her key concerns was the choice of venue for the hearings, which are being held in a high-security zone. She argued that the location was both intimidating and inappropriate—especially when compared to similar proceedings in the past that were conducted at the Judicial Service’s Court Complex.

Responding to her statements, Dafeamekpor criticized the Chief Justice’s public denunciations and urged her to respect the judicial process.

“I think that she should rather allow [the law to work]. She is acting in a manner that is presumptive of guilt,” he said during an interview on Face to Face on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu.

Justice Torkornoo’s legal challenge remains active, while the committee’s work continues under increasing political and public scrutiny.

Govt pushes for EU inspectors in Ghana to curb export losses

0

In a strategic effort to reduce export rejections and streamline access to European markets, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry is engaging with the European Union to deploy EU-accredited inspectors in Ghana.

The initiative, spearheaded by sector minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, aims to facilitate pre-shipment inspections of perishable goods—such as vegetables—at Ghanaian ports, ensuring they meet EU standards before leaving the country.

“This will drastically cut down on goods being rejected or destroyed on arrival in Europe, saving our exporters considerable costs,” the Minister said, following high-level discussions with EU officials at a recent conference.

Ghana previously suffered significant losses—estimated at over US$30 million—after the EU imposed a 2014 ban on gourds and select Asian vegetables, including chillies and aubergines, due to pest infestation concerns.

As part of the broader strategy, the government also plans to upgrade and accredit local laboratories to align with global sanitary and quality testing standards, enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness in international markets.

“We are committed to upgrading our local laboratories to meet international standards,” she affirmed.

The move is expected to improve export reliability, minimize compliance-related losses, and strengthen Ghana’s position as a trusted trade partner within the EU supply chain—particularly amid rising scrutiny over quality and increasing logistics costs.

Police Constable allegedly defrauds 197 in recruitment scam

0

An Achimota District Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of General Constable Samuel Appiah with Service Number 58577 for allegedly defrauding by false pretences.

Appiah is alleged to have hoodwinked some 197 prospective applicants in a security service recruitment scam last year.

According to the warrant available to the Ghana News Agency, issued on 13th May, 2025 and signed by Mr Prince Osei Owusu, the presiding Judge of the court said “You are hereby commanded in the name of the President to apprehend the said Constable of the National Formed Police Unit, Tesano-Accra, to appear before the District Court.”

The facts are that complainant Sylvester Kofi Akudeka on the 5th of December 2024, reported a case of defrauding by false pretence by Constable Appiah with contact numbers 050859824/0240180142.

It said Appiah is alleged to have collected an amount of GHC1.6 million from 197 complainants, made up of young men and women, under the pretext of assisting them to get recruited into various security services.

Investigations have reached a point where the above subject’s presence would be needed at Lapaz Police Station to assist further in a probe, according to a communication signed by Superintendent Mr Isaac Ocansey, District Commander, Tesano District, Accra.

Appiah’s whereabouts could not be ascertained now, with an appeal to the public to volunteer information towards his arrest.

Dutch Agribusiness delegation begins Ghana trade mission

0

A 32-member Dutch horticulture business delegation comprising 19 leading agribusiness companies has arrived in Ghana on a three-day trade mission aimed at deepening Dutch-Ghanaian cooperation in the horticultural sector.

The delegation is led by the Dutch Vice Minister of Agriculture, H.E. Marten van den Berg. The mission runs from May 26 to May 28, 2025.

The initiative is hosted by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana in collaboration with the Netherlands-Africa Business Council (NABC). It brings together stakeholders from both countries—including government agencies, private sector actors, and academic institutions—to explore investment opportunities and promote sustainable partnerships across the horticulture value chain.

This mission signals a renewed commitment from the Netherlands to integrate development cooperation with private sector engagement in Ghana. It features a mix of business matchmaking sessions, field visits, and high-level policy engagements designed to stimulate Dutch investment interest in Ghana’s burgeoning horticultural industry.

Among the mission’s objectives are to attract Dutch agribusinesses to invest in Ghana, showcase how development cooperation is improving the local business environment, and identify the challenges that potential investors face. These insights are expected to inform future Dutch agricultural policies in Ghana.

Key highlights include visits to horticultural enterprises like Iribov and Fruitmaster Greenhouse in the Volta Region, a Farmer Field Day involving smallholder farmers and Dutch partners, and a business reception attended by Ghanaian government officials and trade stakeholders. These activities will showcase Dutch contributions in seed technology, greenhouse production, cold storage, agri-finance, and agricultural training.

A major milestone of the mission is the signing of a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, and Vice Minister Marten van den Berg. The MoU reaffirms both nations’ commitment to ongoing collaboration and inaugurates new Technical Working Groups focused on seeds, agribusiness, and cocoa.

The Dutch government views this mission as more than a trade initiative—it’s a platform for long-term relationship building and knowledge exchange.

According to Marten van den Berg, Dutch farmers have set global benchmarks in agricultural productivity and innovation, and such partnerships can significantly benefit Ghana’s agrifood ambitions.

Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ghana Jeroen Verheul, emphasized that the trade mission reflects a shared ambition to strengthen commercial ties while fostering inclusive, sustainable development. He noted that the Netherlands sees Ghana not only as an investment destination but also as a strategic partner.

The trade mission also aligns with Ghana’s recently launched Feed Ghana Program, which aims to increase domestic vegetable production and promote farming as a business. With ongoing Dutch investment in agricultural education and training, the Netherlands is well-positioned to support this national agenda making the 2025 trade mission a strong symbol of growing bilateral ties in agribusiness.

I am not interested in his resignation – NPP MP on Ablakwa’s private jet resignation controversy

0

Calls are growing for the resignation of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as Minister for Foreign Affairs Calls are growing for the resignation of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as Minister for Foreign Affairs

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s comments about private jet usage, urging Ablakwa to admit he misspoke and apologise rather than resign.

This comes amidst demands for Ablakwa’s resignation following the return of Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang from a medical trip aboard a private jet, contrary to Ablakwa’s previous heavy criticism of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government, which he accused of engaging in profligacy by using private jets.

“I am not calling for his resignation; I just think that he should come and open up to Ghanaians and say that when I was talking, I was talking out of youthful exuberance, and I didn’t know that there would be exogenous circumstances that would require my vice president or a high official within the ranks of the Mahama administration to ever have to fly a private jet,” Dr. Adomako Kissi stated in an interview on Citi TV.

According to him, while his position on the subject runs contrary to the broader demand of the NPP, it is imperative for Ablakwa, who is now the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to admit he goofed and apologise.

“Listen, even my own party may not be happy with me saying that I am not calling for his resignation, but I am calling for him to come out and tell Ghanaians that he is sorry or respectfully tell Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that you know what, ‘Addo D, I am taking a humble pie, and I am sorry for lambasting you for flying on a private jet when it was necessary.’”

The controversy stems from Ablakwa’s past vocal opposition to the use of private jets by government officials, particularly during the Akufo-Addo administration.

Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, gained prominence for his constant criticism of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for using private jets for foreign trips, describing the president’s actions as profligate.

However, the recent use of a private jet by Vice President Opoku-Agyemang for a medical trip has reignited the debate, with some calling for Ablakwa to resign in line with his previous statements.

The position by the Anyaa-Sowutuom MP contrasts with earlier calls from some NPP quarters, including Assin South MP John Ntim Fordjour, who demanded that Ablakwa resign from his position as Minister of Foreign Affairs in line with his vow.

Cedi will depreciate by December if local production is neglected

0

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has warned that the Ghanaian Cedi may face renewed depreciation by December 2025 if the government fails to prioritize local production and export-led economic growth.

According to the IEA, current policy measures aimed at stabilizing the currency may offer only temporary relief unless accompanied by significant efforts to enhance domestic productivity—especially in key export-oriented sectors.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, IEA Fellow Professor Vladimir Antwi-Danso cautioned that the recent appreciation of the Cedi could be short-lived.

He urged policymakers to shift from short-term currency interventions to long-term strategies that strengthen the fundamentals of the economy through increased industrialization, value addition, and export competitiveness.

“Our forex appreciating, and the Cedi also appreciating is not the answer, you must do more. You must try, and be an export economy. That is the only way you stablise your economy. That is the only way you make the other currency lower.

“What we are doing is that we are not stablising permanently. We will relapse. By December I believe that we will relapse. And this is coming from a technical point of view and not political. What I am saying is that it is not yet hurray,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiamah, has refuted claims that the Central Bank is deliberately manipulating the exchange rate to drive the recent appreciation of the Cedi.

Speaking at the Ghana CEO Summit held in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025, Dr. Asiamah attributed the Cedi’s performance to sound macroeconomic fundamentals.

“Our Cedi has appreciated by 24.1% against the US dollar. Let me emphasise that the Central Bank is not using international reserves to prop up the Cedi, nor are we engineering an unsustainable appreciation,” he said.

According to Dr. Asiamah, the Cedi’s strength is underpinned by disciplined monetary policy, targeted foreign exchange reforms, improved remittance flows, and enhanced market surveillance.

“These are not short-term interventions—they are deliberate, structural changes aimed at ensuring long-term stability,” he added.

Cedi to sustain gains in quarter 2 amid improving market confidence – Databank

The Ghana cedi will sustain gains in quarter two amid robust foreign exchange support and improving market confidence.

According to Databank Research, its forecast was underpinned by Bank of Ghana’s continuous market support, volatile US dollar, and expected inflows from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

It pointed out that the central bank’s active engagement in the forex market through targeted interventions would remain central to anchoring expectations and ensuring adequate liquidity.

This according to the research would help moderate volatility, smoothen out imbalances, and reinforce confidence in the cedi.

“Similarly, rising concerns over the US economy outlook, compounded by renewed trade tensions and fiscal policy uncertainty, have begun to weigh on investor appetite for dollar-denominated assets. This shift is expected to create favourable tailwinds for Sub-Saharan African currencies (SSA), including the cedi, as relative demand improves and external pressures ease,” it said.

It further said enhanced macroeconomic stability and increasing investor confidence in Ghana’s policy direction have helped limit speculative positioning against the cedi.

With lower capital slippage and market panic, it explained that the environment would become more conducive to sustaining Cedi’s resilience.

Similarly, it stressed that the recent staff-level agreement on the fourth review of Ghana’s US$3.0 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) reflects continued progress in fiscal and structural reforms.

Upon expected IMF Board approval, Ghana will secure a US$370mn tranche disbursement.

“We expect this inflow to augment our existing FX [foreign exchange] buffers and help supply-side intervention, cushioning the GH¢ from any potential external shocks”, Databank Research added.

The Ghana cedi has in the past six weeks recorded an aggressive appreciation against the US dollar and the other major foreign currencies.

It is presently going for about GH¢12.90 to one US dollar in the retail market.

“His career hasn’t been like he expected it to be, but this is normal in football. Sometimes you have ups and sometimes you have downs, and for him, it’s another opportunity for him to show himself,” he added.

Meanwhile, Afena-Gyan, who has scored six goals in 30 appearances for the Serie C side, is expected to join the Black Stars camp today in London.

The Black Stars will face rivals, Nigeria, on Wednesday, May 28, at the Gtech Community Stadium. The winner of that match will face either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago in the final on Saturday, May 31.

Parliament’s second meeting will prioritize accountability, with a series of investigations into past financial scandals.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga announced that the Majority Caucus will spearhead efforts to probe COVID-19 expenditure, the Agyapa Royalties deal, and the $190 million PDS scandal.

He added that Parliament will demand regular updates on the activities of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), especially on the $20 billion in financial crimes under review.

Ayariga criticized the previous administration’s reliance on sole-sourced contracts, pledging a thorough examination of procurement practices.

The Majority Caucus intends to hold the Special Prosecutor accountable as well.

“We will adopt U.S.-style committee hearings to unravel systemic corruption,” Ayariga announced.

“This House will not stand idle while public funds are looted with impunity.”

Accra City Hotel unveils new logo

0

Accra City Hotel has unveiled a new logo as part of a bold transformation aimed at turning the iconic hospitality facility into a “living art gallery” that celebrates the rich history of Accra and the cultural heritage of the Ga people.

Speaking at the official unveiling, the hotel’s General Manager, Divine Matey, said the rebranding signified more than just a visual refresh. “Accra is a city brimming with history, resilience, and a vibrant cultural identity, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Ga people,” he said.

“With this transformation, Accra City Hotel aims to become more than just a place to stay; we aspire to be a gateway for our guests to truly experience the soul of Accra. Our new logo reflects this evolution, blending modernity with a respectful nod to our heritage.”

The new logo, while sleek and modern, features traditional Ga symbols as part of its secondary branding, reinforcing the hotel’s commitment to cultural authenticity. It marks the beginning of an ambitious journey by the hotel to create an immersive cultural experience within its premises.

Mr Matey explained that the hotel’s public spaces—lobby, lounges, and corridors—will now double as a curated gallery, showcasing a wide range of visual art forms and historical artefacts. These will tell the story of Accra’s evolution, from its early Ga settlements through colonial times to its emergence as a dynamic African capital.

The Chief Operating Officer of Accra City Hotel, Yaw Mamphey said the project is designed to elevate both the guest experience and the cultural consciousness of the city. “We believe this initiative will not only enrich the experience of our guests but also provide a platform for local artists and artisans to showcase their talent and for the stories of Accra and the Ga people to reach a wider audience,” he said. “Each piece has been carefully chosen for its artistic merit and its ability to contribute to a comprehensive and engaging narrative of our city’s cultural identity.”

The artworks and artefacts, many of which are available for purchase, include paintings, sculptures, textiles, photography, and traditional objects that highlight Ga customs, chieftaincy, music, and symbolism. The installations were curated by The House of Heritage Ghana, a collective renowned for its work in cultural preservation and storytelling through visual art.

To enhance public engagement, the hotel plans to host guided tours led by cultural experts, as well as regular events such as lectures, performances, and workshops centred on Ga traditions and history.

The initiative has been warmly received by traditional leaders. Nii Ahene Nunoo III, Paramount Chief of the Abola Traditional Area and Chief Advisor to the Ga Mantse, described the project as a visionary move. “This is a commendable effort to not only preserve but also to share our history and culture with the world,” he said. “Accra City Hotel is setting a new standard for how hospitality can contribute to cultural understanding and appreciation.”

The hotel’s Executive Director, who conceptualised the initiative, was praised for spearheading the transformation with a strong focus on heritage and innovation.

Nana Akomea, the former Managing Director of the InterCity State Transport Corporation (STC), has refuted claims that he sold some lands belonging to the company while in office.

A deputy Managing Director of the company under the current government has reportedly accused Nana Akomea of unlawfully selling STC lands, which he described as “like groundnuts.”

According to the claims, Mr. Akomea sold the lands to his political party, the New Patriotic Party’s faithful.

But, according to Nana Akomea, there never occurred a time when he sold a single STC land to his party members and supporters.

“There’s no iota of truth in it…If you want to know those who sold STC lands, it is not Nana Akomea and the NPP,” he emphasized on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show.

He subtly rather accused the Mahama government of selling the said lands before the inception of the Akufo-Addo administration.

He stressed, “I went to the STC to find that they had sold the 4 acres of land at the head office.”

He pointed out that he inherited a situation where STC lands, such as some acres at Takoradi in the Western Region, had even been purchased and used to build a MELCOM shop.

Andy Appiah Kubi, counsel to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has joined party executives and family members in launching a search for him.

This follows reports that he was transferred to a hospital after being picked up and detained by operatives of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on the evening of Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

In a video posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi, along with some party executives and members of Wontumi’s family, were seen actively searching for his whereabouts, moving from one hospital to another.

They initially visited the 37 Military Hospital, where a doctor informed them that the politician and businessman was not at the facility.

With disappointment written on their faces, the group then proceeded to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), hopeful of finding him there. However, their hopes were dashed when he was not found at that location either.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the outspoken Chairman Wontumi has been located.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested and detained by EOCO after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, he had reported to the CID, where he was formally charged with engaging in illegal mining activities.

According to a police statement signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the CID, the NPP regional chairman was cautioned over his alleged involvement in unauthorized mining operations, pollution of water bodies, and entry into a forest reserve without permission.

The police confirmed that Chairman Wontumi fully cooperated with investigators, provided his statement, and was subsequently granted bail with two sureties.

His detention by EOCO follows a failed attempt by security operatives to arrest him on Friday, May 23, 2025.

ECG cuts power to YEA office in Abuakwa North over GH₵5,500 debt

Operations at the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) office in Abuakwa North have come to a standstill following the disconnection of electricity by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over a longstanding debt of GH₵5,500.

The power cut, which stems from an unpaid bill dating back seven years, has left the office without electricity for several days, crippling service delivery and raising concerns about the agency’s ability to fulfill its core mandate of addressing youth unemployment in the municipality.

The newly appointed YEA Director for Abuakwa North, Mr. Edmond Kwaku Dua, expressed frustration during an interview after resuming duty on Monday.

“As I resume office today, there is no electricity. Everything is ‘basa’ in the office. Not a single computer is working,” he lamented, describing the dire state of affairs.

The power outage has rendered all electronic equipment inoperable, leaving staff unable to perform basic administrative functions. Mr. Dua has since issued an urgent appeal to the relevant authorities and stakeholders to help settle the outstanding electricity debt and restore power to the office.

In addition to the disconnection, Mr. Dua pointed out the poor condition of the office infrastructure, calling for immediate renovation. He urged individuals, organisations, and government agencies to support efforts to revive the office and enable it to serve the youth effectively.

Despite the challenges, the YEA Director remains hopeful about the broader national agenda to tackle unemployment. Speaking to Accra FM/CTV News reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel, Mr. Dua lauded the proposed 24-hour economy policy, describing it as a potential game-changer for job creation.

“Once we are able to implement it, you can imagine the number of employment opportunities we can create for the youth of this country,” he said, noting that about 140,000 young people enter the Ghanaian labour market each year.

Mr. Dua further emphasised the importance of the private sector’s involvement in realising President John Mahama’s One Million Jobs Agenda, which aligns with the YEA’s broader efforts to reduce unemployment across the country.

In a statement, the YEA highlighted the upcoming YEA Job Fair 2025 as a critical component of the agency’s strategy to connect job seekers with potential employers and provide avenues for skills development and career advancement.

Residents refuse to relocate despite Weija dam spillage, citing lack of alternatives

A resident speaking to the media A resident speaking to the media

Despite repeated warnings from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) about the impending spillage of the Weija Dam, residents living in low-lying communities along the dam have vowed to stay put, citing desperation and a lack of relocation options.

GWCL, earlier this week, began spilling excess water from the dam by opening two of its five gates, a move necessitated by rising water levels due to recent heavy rains.

The company warned that the spillage was critical to protecting the dam’s structural integrity and preventing a potential disaster.

However, many residents in flood-prone areas say they have nowhere else to go.

“We’ve been through this before. Every year, they open the dam, and water enters our homes. But where do they expect us to go?” one resident asked in frustration.

With past spillages leading to widespread flooding, displacement, and property damage, residents remain fearful—but resolute. Some said they were prepared to climb onto rooftops to survive the floods rather than abandon their homes.

“Even if the water comes, we’ll stay on the roof if we have to. We’re not leaving because we have no other choice,” another resident said.

The Weija Dam spillage has become an annual challenge for communities along its banks. Yet, many claim that this year, authorities failed to adequately engage them before opening the dam gates. Several residents expressed anger toward GWCL for not directly informing them or involving community leaders in advance.

“They didn’t come to speak with us. They just opened the gates. We should have been part of the conversation,” a community member said.

As of now, only two gates have been opened, but GWCL has indicated that more may follow depending on weather conditions and water levels.

3 GETFund projects stalled …deeping woes of UTAS

0

Three critical Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Navrongo, in the Upper East Region have been stalled for the past 10 years affecting academic work.

These include a 4-storey hostel facility for students, 4-storey laboratory complex, a lecture hall / office complex, a situation which is making it difficult to admit more students into the university.

THE Vice Chancellor of UTAS, Professor Albert Luguterah, who disclosed these to The Ghanaian Times in an exclusive interview on Friday, blamed the issue on successive governments and contractors for the lukewarm attitude in getting the projects executed on scheduled.

Prof. Luguterah said he was following up on the “needless delays” in getting these major GETFund projects executed with the expedition it deserved to bring to an end the continued ‘hullabaloo’ of limited infrastructure constraining the successful running of the university.

Describing the situation as “highly devastating,” he pointed out that the phenomenon had made the school, also referred to as C.K Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) underutilised, compelling management to turn down a lot of applications from prospective students in every academic year.

Additionally, he mentioned that the construction of a 4-storey hostel facility for students had been stalled along the line, forcing scores of students to trek miles from their private residence to access lectures, each day.

He disclosed that the hostel project, awarded to the Koddeg Ghana Limited on March 3, 2024, was scheduled to be completed on August 31, 2025.

According to him, the estimated GH¢4.28 million project was only 10 per cent complete with the contractor abandoning the site after all efforts to secure the needed funds to continue the project proved futile.

Also, the construction of a 4-storey Laboratory Complex, awarded to the Sunlu Ghana Ltd on November 11, 2016, Prof. Luguterah emphasised, had hit the rock, with the contractor demanding a revision of the contract and revaluation of the contract sum which is currently GH¢21, 499,577.33.

“You see, it is sad that you award contract to a contractor which is just some meagre four or five or so millions of Ghana Cedis, and because of the unnecessary delays, it balloons.

“So, despite all that the contractors have done, the amount of money they need to finish the project is far more than the cost of the entire project, and it is just sometimes painful how we just watch how Ghana’s money is wasted,” he fumed.

Moreover, he mentioned other impeded contracts, such as a 4-storey lecture hall and office block which was awarded on contract on November 14, 2014, and was scheduled for completion on November 11, 2016, with an initial contract sum of GH¢3, 979,086.51.

He said the inner roads of the university were in a very deplorable state, an issue he stated had posed challenges to the operations of the school.

The Goaso Traditional Council has announced that every household within the Goaso Traditional Area in the Ahafo Region will be required to pay GH₵50 as part of preparations for the funeral rites of the late Goasomanhene, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah.

Nana Kwasi Bosomprah, the Paramount Chief of the Goaso Traditional Area, passed away in December 2024. Reports indicate that he had been unwell for some time prior to his death.

At a press conference held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Traditional Council declared that the levy is mandatory and called on all households to comply.

“We are about to bid farewell to our chief, who generously provided us a place on this land to lay our heads. Will you remain unconcerned and contribute nothing as we prepare for his funeral?” the Council stated.

“The Goaso Traditional Council has resolved that each household must contribute fifty cedis. We humbly ask that there be no complaints about this contribution.

“If you refuse to pay and, in the future, lose a family member, will you still come to the Traditional Council seeking a burial place?

“We are hopeful that everyone will contribute to ensure we give our chief a befitting burial. We respectfully urge every household to make this payment—it is mandatory.

“Please note, if you do not pay, the time will come when the Traditional Council will take action,” one of the leaders of the Council who addressed the media said.

Nana Kwasi Bosomprah was widely known for his outspoken nature. He openly criticized the Electoral Commission of Ghana, various state agencies, and the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He made headlines for publicly weeping over the lack of development in his community and for calling out pastors and fellow chiefs whom he accused of misrepresenting the true state of the nation.

Nana Kwasi Bosomprah was enstooled as the Paramount Chief of Goaso in 2008.

ECG installs 18 new 33 kv at Odorkor Primary Substation …to improve power supply

0

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has inaugurated 18 new 33 Kilovolt (kv) switchgears at the Odorkor Primary Substation, as part of effort by the power utility company to enhance quality and reliability of electricity supply to customers.

An imitative of the Accra Sub-Transmission Division of the ECG), the installation of switchgears, which was fully funded by the ECG, would among other things help address the issues of frequent power outages experienced by customers at Odorkor, Sakaman, South Odorkor, Kwashieman, Official Town, McCarthy Hill, Mallam, Awoshie, and parts of Dansoman, who relied on the Odorkor Primary Substation for power.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra on Friday, the General Manager of the ECG Sub-Transmission in Accra, Mr Francis K. Atsyatsya, said the installation of the new switchgears was necessitated by the urgent need to replace the old switchgears that had been in use for the past 14 years now.

According to him, the old switchgears that were replaced had not only become less efficient, thereby contributing to the frequent power outages experienced by customers, but also raised safety concerns at the substation.

“These new switchgears replace outdated equipment that has been in operation for approximately 14 years, which not only diminished efficiency but also raised safety concerns at the substation,” Mr Atsyatsya explained.

Furthermore, he noted that the installation of the new switchgears would enhance the safety of ECG staff who operated at the Odorkor Primary Substation.

Mr Atsyatsya again noted that several projects aimed at improving service delivery and customer satisfaction were expected to be completed by ECG.

He, therefore, urged stakeholders and customers to collaborate with the company in order to enhance service delivery and customer satisfaction.

Moreover, the General Manger cautioned customers to be vigilant against scammers who portray themselves as staff of ECG to transact business with them and report such individuals and their fraudulent activities to the police or the nearest ECG office.

In addition, he encouraged customers to use the ECG Mobile App or short code *226# for all ECG-related payments.

Mr Atsyatsya also called on customers to promptly pay their bills to enable ECG initiative further projects aimed at enhancing service delivery.

The National Cross Border Women Traders Association has met with the Member of the Council of State representing the Volta Region, Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, to discuss matters surrounding border trade.

The discussions centered particularly on “formalising border trade for women through cooperative structures, digital membership registration, and infrastructure development.”

Making this known in a post on Facebook, Kwamigah-Atokple recalled how his personal experience of growing up around the border made the meeting even more relatable for him.

“As someone who grew up witnessing cross-border trade struggles firsthand, I resonated deeply with their concerns. I assured them of my full commitment to advocating for improved infrastructure, security, and trade facilitation, particularly for women using the approved Volta routes.

This engagement reinforces my resolve to make the Volta Region a model for inclusive trade development. With coordinated support, we can ensure that cross-border women traders are empowered, protected, and fully integrated into Ghana’s formal trade economy to expand the revenue net for the Republic of Ghana.

As part of my commitment to championing inclusive economic growth and grassroots empowerment, I received a delegation from the National Cross Border Women Traders Association, led by the National Coordinator, Mr. Oscar Akaba, in my office today,” he wrote.

The Council of State Member also highlighted the importance of the meeting, especially considering the Volta Region is home to several border entry points.

“Their visit focused on strengthening women-led cross-border trade activities, especially through the Volta Region, which hosts 57 entry points—12 of which are officially approved.

The team presented a clear vision of formalizing border trade for women through cooperative structures, digital membership registration, and infrastructure development. Yet, challenges remain,” he added.

Among the delegation were Mama Setrakor, Madam Dzidzorgbe Rebecca Amuzu, Madam Senanu, and Mrs. Gloria Sakyi.

‘Legal Education Bill to end Makola monopoly’ – Dafeamekpor

0

The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has declared that the much-anticipated Legal Education Bill will break the Ghana School of Law’s long-standing monopoly over professional legal training.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, May 27, the legislator—himself a lawyer—called the move a necessary reform to “democratise legal education” and correct a “corrupted” system.

“We waged this war from about 2018,” the Member of Parliament for South Dayi said.

“Intake to the law school became acrimonious, contentious, and eventually corrupted. Corrupted because evidence emerged that even persons who didn’t write law school entrance exams got admitted.”

Citing findings from the General Legal Council’s own disciplinary committee, Mr Dafeamekpor alleged that at least 11 students were smuggled into the law school.

“My information is that they were over 33,” he added. “But to minimise the impact, they said 11. What became the fate of those 11 students? We are yet to know, but we shall uncover.”

According to him, the new bill will mandate that all accredited law faculties in the country be licensed not only to run academic LLB programmes, but also to train lawyers professionally.

“Let every faculty accredited to run the academic LLB programs be accredited or licensed to train their own lawyers,” he said.

Under the proposed system, bar examinations—administered twice annually by the General Legal Council—will be the single national qualifying test.

“We’ll have one in January and one in July. When you pass in January, you are called to the bar in March or April. If you pass in June, you’re called in September or October,” he explained.

“That way, we can have as many lawyers as we want.”

He argued that many faculties are already calling themselves law schools, but are unable to train lawyers due to regulatory bottlenecks.

“What becomes of a law school when you can’t train lawyers?” he asked. “So we want the faculties to be converted into law schools.”

Makola, the traditional Ghana School of Law in Accra, will become just another competitor under the new regime.

“It will no longer have the monopoly. It will admit its own students afresh, train them, and when they’re ready, they go and face the bar like everyone else.”

Mr Dafeamekpor stressed that not all those called to the bar need to be courtroom lawyers.

“That’s the erroneous impression in the minds of a lot of people,” he said. “There are more people with a law degree who are not in practice. They are in corporate law and others, and we need them.”

He added that many district assemblies and institutions across Ghana are in need of legally trained minds, not necessarily practising lawyers, who can guide critical processes and decisions.

“You need lawyers who may not even be practitioners, but who have the legal training, who have the legal mind to guide you.”

Pressed by host Evans Mensah on when the bill will be passed, Mr Dafeamekpor responded with certainty and urgency.

“Why not? I’m the Majority Chief Whip, and we are even minded to move this under a certificate of urgency. It is one of our major political promises, and we will deliver it.”

He also revealed that he would be publishing an article on the matter before the end of the week, which would further expose some of the issues that have plagued the current system of legal education.

“We are serious about this. We are going to break the bottlenecks. We are going to expand access. The Legal Education Bill is the way forward,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been rushed to a hospital after undergoing hours of interrogation at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The development was confirmed by his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, in an interview on Tuesday night, May 27, 2025.

According to Appiah-Kubi, his client was taken to the hospital for medical treatment following the intensive interrogation session.

“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment…” he said.

“We have given our statement; they preferred some allegations against him, and he responded to them. We haven’t finished the interrogation, so we will come back to continue, hopefully tomorrow, if his condition improves. Otherwise, he will stay there until the doctors discharge him, and then we will come back to continue the interrogation,” Appiah-Kubi stated.

The lawyer also revealed that amidst these developments, they received a writ of summons from Exim Bank earlier in the afternoon.

“Nevertheless, we have also received this afternoon a writ of summons from Exim Bank, and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow. I am very hopeful that we will be able to mount a defence to the writ,” he added.

Appiah-Kubi expressed confidence in addressing both the criminal and civil aspects of the case. “When we are in court, we will indicate to the court that this is a civil matter, for which reason Exim Bank has issued a writ to us, which we are also responding to. So, this one of a supposed criminal investigation, I am sure and confident that we will be able to mount a defence,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi’s arrest and subsequent interrogation by EOCO saw some NPP supporters protesting outside the EOCO office.

The protests escalated into violence, leading to the assault of a Joynews reporter, Latif Iddrisu, and the vandalism of police vehicles by some protesters.

SHS indiscipline crisis demands collective action; Mahama issues wake-up call

President Mahama calls for collaboration to address rising indiscipline in SHSs President Mahama calls for collaboration to address rising indiscipline in SHSs

President John Dramani Mahama has raised an alarm about a troubling trend: the rising indiscipline in Senior High Schools (SHSs).

He has expressed deep concern over the escalating issues of indiscipline across the country and is urging stakeholders to come together to address this situation.

A report from Citinewsroom.com highlights that Mahama’s comments align with warnings from the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), which has recently lamented the decline of discipline in schools.

NAGRAT has given the government an ultimatum to resolve the issue by the end of the month or risk protective actions from teachers against violent students.

Increasing incidents of unruly behavior, substance abuse, and poor academic performance have negatively impacted the reputation of Ghana’s SHSs.

Mahama believes it is time for collective action.

During a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the Jubilee House on Friday, May 23, 2025, President Mahama emphasised the urgent need for collaboration to reverse this trend.

“There is a breakdown of values and morals, and that is creating some issues in our schools. There have been incidents where you find students with guns in our public schools. There is also the student who almost lost her eyesight because a student fired a gun,” he stated.

Mahama’s message to parents, teachers, policymakers, and students is clear: we must work together to address the root causes of indiscipline and restore order in our SHSs.

He also questioned how issues such as curriculum design, moral education, student discipline, and teacher absenteeism are being managed.

“So, what do we do about our curriculum, moral education, discipline, and teacher absenteeism? The inspectorate division of the GES cannot be everywhere at the same time to make sure that teachers are in school,” he noted.

Mahama called for closer cooperation between the GES and faith-based institutions to enhance accountability and monitoring.

“So, how can we collaborate with the churches and find out whether the teachers who have been posted to these schools are actually going to schools and teaching? I think collaboration will help solve the issue,” he added.

The future of Ghana’s youth is at stake.

In a separate discussion, President Mahama described the fight against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, as a highly complex challenge.

This issue is compounded by the country’s current economic difficulties and high youth unemployment.

He pointed out that limited job opportunities have driven many unskilled youths to engage in illegal mining activities for survival.

Mahama also differentiated between galamsey and legitimate small-scale mining, stating, “Small-scale mining, when properly regulated, is not illegal.”

Unity Cup: We will do everything to beat Nigeria

Black Stars coach, Otto Addo Black Stars coach, Otto Addo

Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, has assured that they will do everything possible to beat Nigeria.

Ghana will renew the rivalry with their West African neighbours in the 2025 Unity Cup game at the Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite leaving out key players for the four-nation tournament, Addo, speaking to the press, said they are seeking revenge from their last game and also to claim the bragging rights for the supporters, knowing very well the kind of rivalry that exists between the two nations

“The last friendly we lost, so we really want to beat them this time. I know about the rivalry, so games like these are very important and a win here can get the fans behind us, so we will have to do everything to win the game,” the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach said.

The 48-year-old also emphasised that, although the match is officially a friendly, it carries much more weight given the historic competition between the two countries.

“It’s a friendly but not really a friendly. We want our people to be proud of us, as it’s always about who has a better team. We are hoping to be successful, even though it will be tough, but we would like to win,” he added.

The winner will face either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago in the final on Saturday, May 31.

Government to introduce new guidelines for removal of Superior Courts Justices

Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has revealed that the government is preparing to introduce new constitutional guidelines for the removal of Justices of the Superior Courts, including the Chief Justice.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, during the opening of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, he explained that the government aims to establish a more robust and transparent process for the removal of Supreme Court Justices, including the Chief Justice.

“The Attorney General will also present several pieces of subsidiary legislation, including the Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Regulations, Court of Appeal Rules, EOCO (Operations) Regulations, EOCO (Terms and Conditions of Service) Regulations, High Court (Civil Procedure) (Amendment) Rules, Interpretation Regulations, Judicial Service (Terms and Conditions of Service) Regulations, Legal Aid Commission Regulations, Supreme Court Rules, and most significantly removal from Office of Justices of the Supreme Court Rules,” he stated.

Mahama Ayariga reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to accelerating legislative reforms aimed at strengthening state institutions and deepening Ghana’s democratic governance.

“The President is committed to legislative clarity and transparency regarding the constitutional processes for the removal of justices of the Superior Courts,” he added.

His remarks come in the wake of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, following the determination of a prima facie case in three petitions calling for her removal from office.

President John Dramani Mahama has constituted a five-member committee to investigate the petitions.

In the interim, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice in line with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court shall act as Chief Justice if the position becomes vacant or the substantive Chief Justice is unable to perform their duties.

French MPs back law to allow assisted dying

0

French MPs have voted to allow some people in the last stages of a terminal illness the right to assisted dying.

The National Assembly approved the bill, which is backed by President Emmanuel Macron, by 305 votes to 199. It will now go to the upper house, the Senate, before a second reading in the National Assembly. Supporters hope it will become law by 2027.

It would make France the eighth country in the European Union to allow a version of assisted dying.

As currently framed, the French version would be not as permissive as in the Netherlands or neighbouring Belgium, which were the first countries in Europe to legalise assisted dying.

A separate bill creating a right to palliative care went through unopposed. It is estimated that 48% of French patients who require palliative care do not get it.

Macron said the decision to approve both bills was “an important step” in a social media post on Tuesday.

“With respect for sensitivities, doubts and hopes, the path of fraternity that I hoped for is gradually opening up”, he wrote on X.

Much of the two-week debate in the Assembly had focused on the conditions under which a patient could qualify for assisted dying.

The approved formula is for “people struck by a serious and incurable disease” that is “life-threatening and in its advanced or terminal phases”, who are in “constant physical or psychological suffering”.

The patient would have to be able to “freely manifest his or her intention”. They would have to wait 48 hours and then confirm it.

Once authorised, the lethal dose would be self-administered by the patient; or by a medical assistant if the patient were incapable.

Authorisation would be provided by a doctor, but only after consultation with peers.

MPs were allowed a free vote on the bill – a reflection of how differences of opinion on the matter defy party lines. Broadly though, the measure was backed by the centre and left and opposed on the right and populist right.

Conservative critics – echoing views of the once-dominant Catholic Church – were concerned that definitions in the bill were too broad, opening the way for assisted dying for patients who might have years to live.

As in other countries where the ethical issues have been hotly debated, opponents fear that vulnerable elderly people could feel under pressure to die in order to remove a burden from their families.

In a demonstration against the bill outside the National Assembly on Saturday, one 44-year-old woman suffering from Parkinson’s disease said it would be like a “loaded pistol left on my bedside table”.

Some left-wingers wanted to toughen the government’s bill by widening access to assisted dying to minors, non-French nationals and patients who leave instructions before going into a coma.

Under the bill, medical staff who oppose assisted dying would not be obliged to carry it out. However, it would be a crime punishable by two years in jail to try to block an act of assisted dying.

Conservatives wanted to create another crime – of incitement to assisted dying. But this amendment was rejected by MPs.

Prime Minister François Bayrou, who is a practising Catholic, said that if he had a vote on the bill he would abstain. As he is not an MP, he did not have a vote.

Wontumi’s Arrest: NPP will fiercely resist any political harassment by government

0

The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Henry Nana Boakye popularly known as Nana B has served notice that the party will fiercely resist any form of harassment of its members by the government.

His comment comes after the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, he reported to the CID, where he was formally charged with engaging in illegal mining activities.

According to a police statement signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the CID, the NPP regional chairman was cautioned over alleged involvement in unauthorised mining operations, pollution of water bodies, and entering a forest reserve without permission.

The police confirmed that Chairman Wontumi cooperated fully with investigators, provided his statement, and was subsequently granted bail with two sureties.

His detention by EOCO comes in the wake of a failed attempt by security operatives to arrest him on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Commenting on Wontumi’s arrest in an interview with the media at the EOCO premises, Nana B said the party has resolved to ensure its members who are invited by any state investigative agency avail themselves and assist with the probe.

However, what the party will not tolerate is deliberate government sponsored harassment of party supporters.

“We will cooperate lawfully with any form of investigation. We have said it time without number that we are going to cooperate. But for the government to subject people to such political harassment, intimidation, we are not going to allow it.”

He stated that the party will in the coming days initiate action to express its displeasure over such harassments.

“Trust me we are not going to sit down, we are not going to allow this political intimidation and harassment to go on. In the come days you will hear from us. If you have an overwhelming endorsement from the people it doesn’t mean you have to harass the people. You invite somebody, the person honours the invitation and right afterwards just at the premises he is picked up as if he is a common thief.”

West African nations unite in Accra to tackle firearms trafficking

0

Some of the stakeholders who attended the programme Some of the stakeholders who attended the programme

Key stakeholders from across West Africa have convened in Accra for the Regional Planning Meeting for Operation KAFO VI, a critical multilateral initiative aimed at combating the illicit trafficking of firearms across borders.

The meeting, held from May 27 to 29, 2025, brings together representatives from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, and Togo, with support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and financial backing from the Federal Republic of Germany.

Speaking during the opening session on May 27, 2025, Ghana’s Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohamed Muntaka-Mubarak, stressed the urgency of regional collaboration in confronting the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW), which he described as both a “symptom and catalyst of instability” in the sub-region.

“This meeting is not simply a planning session. It is a call to action—a declaration that we will not sit idly by while our communities are put at risk,” the Minister stated.

He noted the devastating consequences of illicit weapons, citing increased terrorist activities and violent crime in both urban and rural communities.

The Minister called for the integration of strategic prevention mechanisms, stronger intelligence sharing, and inclusive operations—particularly encouraging gender balance in enforcement teams.

Dr. Adam Bonaa, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), reiterated Ghana’s commitment to regional peace and security.

He highlighted the importance of sustained institutional capacity building, community engagement, and legislative reforms.

Dr. Bonaa also emphasized the need for the swift passage of Ghana’s proposed Arms Bill, a legislative instrument designed to modernize national firearms regulations and align them with international standards such as the ECOWAS Convention and the UN Firearms Protocol.

“We must ensure that our legal frameworks keep pace with the evolving nature of transnational crime,” he urged.

Speaking on behalf of UNODC, Christoph Capelle, Acting Head of the UNODC Office in Ghana, highlighted the strategic importance of the meeting.

He revealed that Ghana recently concluded its first national strategy against organized crime (2025–2030), developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior, with support from UNODC. The strategy specifically addresses the reduction of illicit weapons.

“The trafficking of firearms is not just a matter of crime—it is a matter of life and death,” said Capelle.

He emphasized that the only way to combat such a transnational threat is through equally transnational, unified, and strategic responses.

Also present was Leonardo Lara, Team Leader of the UNODC Firearms Trafficking Section, who described Operation KAFO as a “strong and growing alliance” against the flow of illicit arms fueling conflict, crime, and terrorism.

He noted the complex and adaptive nature of trafficking networks, warning that they continue to exploit porous borders and jurisdictional loopholes across the Sahel and coastal states.

German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, underscored Germany’s long-standing commitment to fighting organized crime in West Africa.

He praised UNODC’s practitioner-focused approach and urged participating countries to maintain strong collaboration.

“The elephant in the room is not easy to get rid of… only when countries are committed to working together will we have a good chance of mitigating the challenge,” he said.

Over the course of the three-day meeting, national delegations are expected to present threat assessments, identify high-risk border areas, and finalize operational plans for KAFO VI.

Training modules, enforcement tools, and coordination mechanisms are also on the agenda.

Foreign Minister should pursue quiet diplomacy, not opulism – Minority Caucus urges tact and engagement

0

The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, led by Ranking Member Samuel A. Jinapor, has expressed deep concern over the recent direction of Ghana’s foreign policy communication.

The caucus is urging the Minister for Foreign Affairs to adopt a more measured, consultative, and professional approach to diplomacy, rather than relying on public announcements and social media.

Addressing the media, Hon. Jinapor cited the closure of Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C.—a decision he described as “deeply consequential”—as an example of poor diplomatic process.

The closure reportedly followed allegations of fraud involving one individual at the mission.

“We were utterly shocked to learn of such a major decision through public announcements rather than prior consultation with the Foreign Affairs Committee,” Mr Jinapor said.

“A decision of this magnitude should have been preceded by a formal briefing and managed through discreet diplomatic channels.”

The Minority Caucus emphasised that while accountability is necessary, it must be pursued in a manner that upholds Ghana’s international reputation and supports the morale of its foreign service officers.

Past incidents involving misconduct at missions, they noted, were handled discreetly without compromising the integrity of the diplomatic corps.

“Resorting to social media or public grandstanding risks damaging Ghana’s standing in the international community,” Mr Jinapor warned.

“This approach has repercussions for our diplomats, the image of the country, and the welfare of Ghanaians abroad.”

The caucus clarified that they are not opposed to holding individuals accountable and fully support legal sanctions where wrongdoing is proven.

However, they called for such actions to be taken within the frameworks of institutional and diplomatic best practices.

In addition to concerns about the embassy closure, the caucus raised issues with recent developments at the Ministry, including the rollout of chip-embedded passports and shifting timelines for passport processing.

According to Mr. Jinapor, these initiatives have sparked public confusion due to limited consultation and weak internal coordination.

He acknowledged that the current administration, under President Mahama, is still in its early stages, and suggested that the Foreign Minister may be adjusting from the political style of opposition to the demands of high-level diplomacy.

“International relations demand tact, quiet negotiation, and consistency,” Mr Jinapor said.

“Diplomacy is not a space for political point-scoring or hasty announcements—it requires calm, careful manoeuvring that protects the country’s long-term interests.”

The Minority Caucus also revealed that even members of the Majority and the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee were unaware of some recent decisions by the Ministry.

This, they argued, underscores the urgent need for better transparency and collaboration between the Ministry and Parliament.

In conclusion, the Minority called on the Foreign Minister to strengthen his engagement with the Foreign Affairs Committee, prioritise institutional processes, and commit to a foreign policy agenda rooted in professionalism and tact.

“With more consultation, less populism, and a deeper commitment to diplomacy, Ghana’s global image will be preserved and enhanced,” Mr Jinapor said.

“We trust the Minister will take these concerns seriously.”

Otto Addo Eyes Fresh Talent For Unity Cup

0

Otto Addo

BLACK STARS head coach Otto Addo says the upcoming Unity Cup is the perfect time to assess new players as part of his long-term team-building strategy.

Otto Addo has named five debutants in his squad for the tournament, with key players like Kamaldeen Sulemana, Ernest Nuamah, Antoine Semenyo, and Mohammed Kudus missing out due to minor injuries.

“These two matches are extremely important, just like the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September. This is the perfect time to closely observe the players we’ve been monitoring,” he said

He stressed the importance of creating competition within the squad by giving equal opportunities. “Team building is a process, not something that happens overnight. This is a great chance for our young players to prove themselves.”

Addo said he is focused on building a strong team rather than relying on individual talent. “We want to make these players key parts of the team going forward,” he noted.

The Unity Cup comes after Ghana’s recent wins against Chad and Madagascar, which have placed the Black Stars at the top of Group I in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“We’re also happy to welcome back players who’ve been absent for months due to various reasons and integrate them with the newcomers,” Otto Addo added.

Ghana face Nigeria at the GTech Community Stadium in West London on Wednesday, May 28. The winner advances to the final on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

Chairman Wontumi hospitalised after arrest – Lawyer says interrogation suspended

0

Legal counsel for embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed that his client has been hospitalised.

This was after his arrest and interrogation by state security officers.

Speaking to reporters after hours of legal and police proceedings, lawyer and NPP Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah-Kubi, revealed that Wontumi fell ill during the interrogation process and was subsequently transferred to a hospital for medical attention.

“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” he disclosed.

According to party officials, Wontumi had initially honoured a police invitation and was at the CID headquarters responding to questions when he was suddenly whisked away by heavily armed, masked officers and detained for further investigation.

While details of the allegations against him remain unclear, Mr Appiah-Kubi said that the police had “preferred some allegations” against his client, to which he had already responded.

The interrogation was, however, interrupted due to his deteriorating health.

In a parallel development, Mr Appiah-Kubi also revealed that a writ of summons from Exim Bank was served on Wontumi earlier in the day, adding a civil legal dimension to the unfolding drama.

“We have also received this afternoon a writ of summons from Exim Bank, and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow,” he confirmed.

“We are very hopeful that we’ll be able to mount a defence.”

He was keen to distinguish between the civil and criminal elements of the ongoing case.

“This is one of a supposed criminal investigation, but I am confident that we will be able to put up a defence,” he said.

“We consider the Exim Bank issue a civil matter, and that’s how we will respond to it in court.”

The hospitalisation of Chairman Wontumi adds a new layer of tension to a politically charged situation that has already sparked strong reactions from within the NPP.

Several party leaders, including National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, have denounced the arrest as politically motivated and reminiscent of “dark days” of political intimidation.

As the party awaits further updates on Wontumi’s health and legal status, Mr Appiah-Kubi insisted the NPP will continue to engage with the process but will not be cowed into silence.

“We’re cooperating. We believe in the rule of law,” he stated.

The party says it will provide further updates as events unfold.
