63 NPP MPs declare support for Bawumia ahead of presidential primary

0

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race intensifies, 63 Members of Parliament have publicly declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

At a press conference in Parliament, the MPs described Dr. Bawumia as the most capable candidate to lead the NPP to victory and reclaim power from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the MP for Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, revealed that all 63 MPs voluntarily signed a declaration of support for Dr. Bawumia.

Among those named were Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Suhum), John Ntim Fordjour (Assin South), and Ekow Vincent Assafuah (Tafo).

Morocco Reaps The Rewards Of A Royal Vision

The U-20 national team

The Atlas Cubs’ triumph is not an accident of sport but the fruit of long-term reform, vision, and investment in Moroccan youth.

The royal reception of Morocco’s U-20 World Champions by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan was more than a gesture of congratulations — it was a symbolic moment in the story of a nation that has made youth and sports a pillar of its development strategy.

Strategic Reform and Modern Infrastructure

The team’s victory stands as “the culmination of a far-reaching strategic vision” and “the fruit of comprehensive reform launched with the Royal Message to the National Conference in Skhirat.”

Under HM King Mohammed VI’s guidance, Morocco has built one of the most advanced sports infrastructures in Africa and beyond. The Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmoura, described as “one of the finest sports centers in the world”, symbolizes this ambition.

Moreover, “the creation of more than 7,000 neighborhood football pitches across the Kingdom has democratized access to the sport and opened opportunities to all categories of society”.

A Comprehensive and Sustainable Success

Reaching the World Cup final itself was “strong evidence of the success of this comprehensive approach”.

And the U-20 world title serves as “confirmation that Moroccan excellence is not circumstantial, but a sustainable and inclusive success that cements Morocco’s status as a great footballing nation on the global stage”.

This victory represents the tangible results of a consistent royal vision: Morocco’s commitment to education, discipline, and the belief that sports can drive both national pride and social cohesion.

GES Cautions Against Unapproved Levies… Parents Claim Too Late

0

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned heads of schools against the collection of unauthorised levies under the guise of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) dues.

In a statement dated Wednesday, October 22, 2025, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the GES said it had received reports that some second-cycle institutions were demanding and collecting various levies without approval.

The Service clarified that no school has been authorised to collect any PTA or development levy without prior approval.

It explained that in basic schools, approval must come from the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) through the District Director of Education, while in second-cycle schools, such approval must be granted by the Regional Director of Education.

GES further emphasised that even approved levies are strictly voluntary, and no student should be denied access to school services or benefits for non-payment.

The statement also directed that no headteacher, teacher, or GES staff member should be involved in the collection of PTA levies, stressing that fundraising activities are the sole responsibility of duly elected PTA executives.

Regional and District Directors have been instructed to monitor compliance and report any breaches for immediate disciplinary action.

Some parents who have already parted with so much after going through the stressful pre-admission procedures described the directive as coming too late.

This year’s school placement exercise has been bedeviled with challenges. Some students have been posted to schools outside their region of residence as day students. Parents in such circumstances have to request for reposting in which unapproved monies have to be paid.

Even as senior high schools open their gates for freshers, some parents are visiting schools to have their children made boarders. Others too want schools offered their kids changed.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings Hospitalised at Ridge Hospital

Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has reportedly been hospitalised at Ridge Hospital in Accra, sparking concern among Ghanaians and members of the political community.

Ministry of education probes alleged bribery in school placement process

0

The Ministry of Education has launched urgent investigations into allegations of bribery linked to the ongoing school placement process.

This follows media reports quoting the Member of Parliament for Akrofuom, Joseph Azumah, who claimed that a resident approached him for help in securing school admission and later returned with proof of having paid GH¢30,000 to secure the placement.

“Someone who knew I was an MP came to me at Community 16, where I live, and asked me to help their child gain admission to a certain school. Within a week, the person came back with evidence showing that they had paid GH¢30,000 to secure the placement. Why are we doing this to ourselves?,” the MP was quoted as saying.

In a statement issued on October 22, 2025, and signed by Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister for Education, the Ministry described the allegations as serious and worrying. It said the Minister for Education has met with National Security and referred the matter for urgent and thorough investigation.

The Ministry mentioned that similar concerns had earlier been raised by Mr. Richard Asamoah Mensah, Secretary of the Construction and Building Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

The statement assured the public that the Ministry was committed to upholding integrity, transparency, and fairness in the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

It warned that anyone found guilty of bribery, extortion, or manipulation of the system would face the full force of the law.

The Ministry further called on Joseph Azumah, Mr. Richard Asamoah Mensah, and other individuals with credible information to cooperate with investigators to ensure accountability.

According to the Ministry, it remains firm in its commitment to protect the integrity of the placement process and to make sure that access to secondary education in Ghana remains free, fair, and based on merit.

Ghana’s ex-first lady and women’s rights advocate, Nana Rawlings dies at 76

0

The government confirmed her death in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications.

The Presidency expressed “deep regret and profound sorrow” upon receiving news of her passing, acknowledging her role as Founder of the 31 December Women’s Movement.

Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001 during the presidency of her late husband, Jerry John Rawlings, who ruled the country first as a military leader and later as a democratically elected president.

During her two decades as First Lady, she became a prominent voice for women’s empowerment and social reform.

She founded the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM) in 1982, an influential organization that promoted entrepreneurship, education, and political participation among Ghanaian women. The DWM is credited with helping reshape gender policy and elevate women’s roles in public life across Ghana.

Her husband, Jerry John Rawlings, remains one of Ghana’s most consequential leaders, credited with restoring national stability and spearheading major economic reforms. After seizing power through a coup in 1981,

Rawlings later ushered in a new era of democracy in 1992, paving the way for Ghana’s current multiparty political system. His leadership transformed the country’s economy through liberalization policies and anti-corruption campaigns, though not without controversy.

After her husband’s tenure, Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings continued her political journey, founding the National Democratic Party (NDP) after parting ways with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Her political activism and advocacy for women’s rights made her one of the most influential female figures in Ghana’s modern history.

Her death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Ghana’s political evolution.

Here is why Akufo-Addo is trending

0

Former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Despite handing over power in January 2025, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo finds himself back in the spotlight.

This follows a series of politically charged developments that continue to shape Ghana’s public discourse.

Let’s take a look at three reasons why Nana Addo is trending once again.

1. The Anti-LGBT+ Bill

The Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (the “Anti-LGBT+ Bill”) regained prominence on October 22, 2025 after the minority in Parliament questioned the delay in pushing the bill, despite the rigorous scrutiny the NDC caucus applied during the previous administration.

They recalled how pressure was put on the former president to assent to the bill after it was passed by Parliament in 2024.

However, after the change of government, they noted, there has been relative silence from the NDC majority in Parliament.

The new sponsors, led by the NPP caucus in Parliament, claim that if the legislation, which aims to impose significant penalties on LGBTQ+ activities, had been signed, it might have changed the outcome of the 2024 election.

2. Reversal of names of institutions

Earlier in May 2025, the government, through Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, announced plans to revert the names of several public tertiary institutions in Ghana that were renamed during the administration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The minister clarified that this move is part of a policy shift and is not intended to diminish the contributions of the individuals after whom the institutions were named.

A bill will be introduced in Parliament to formalise the reversal of the names. With Parliament resuming sitting on 22 October 2025, the bill is expected to be introduced.

Among the institutions mentioned are:

Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (to be renamed back to University of Development Studies, Wa)

Ephraim Amu Technical University (to be renamed back to Ho Technical University)

Dr K. A. Busia University of Energy and Natural Resources (to be renamed back to the University of Energy and Natural Resources)

Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills and Entrepreneurial Development (to be renamed back to the University of Education, Winneba, Kumasi Campus)

George Grant University of Mines and Technology (to be renamed back to the University of Mines and Technology – UMAT)

3. Meeting with NPP presidential aspirants

On 21 October 2025, Akufo-Addo convened a breakfast meeting at his residence in Nima, Accra, with all five presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The gathering, which brought together Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, focused on bolstering unity ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for 31 January 2026.

Akufo-Addo urged the contenders to adopt issue-based campaigns and emphasized that his foremost commitment remains the cohesion of the party and its success in the 2028 elections.

Former teacher accused of further 90 sex abuse charges

Iain Wares was granted bail when he appeared in court in Cape Town Iain Wares was granted bail when he appeared in court in Cape Town

A former teacher accused of historical sex abuse charges in Scotland has been arrested in South Africa on a further 90 charges.

Iain Wares, 86, has been accused of abuse by scores of former pupils of Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College, where he taught in the 1960s and 70s. They include BBC presenter Nicky Campbell.

Mr Wares now lives in Cape Town, where the High Court ruled in August last year that he could be extradited on three charges to face trial in Scotland.

But the extradition was delayed as UK authorities looked to submit further charges against him.

The new charges have been lodged by 65 people who were allegedly sexually and physically abused by Mr Wares in Scotland.

Victims have accused Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College of failing to alert the authorities of complaints against Mr Wares, enabling him to leave for South Africa in 1979, where he taught until his retirement in 2006.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) in Scotland previously said he faces 74 charges.

Prosecutors first requested his extradition in 2018, leading to his arrest in May 2019 on seven charges of lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour.

There is also a local trial under way in Cape Town against Mr Wares, following allegations by a former student in South Africa.

Mr Wares was granted bail and a hearing is due to start on 20 November.

The current rector of Edinburgh Academy, Barry Welsh, said: “The arrest of Iain Wares is a matter for the legal authorities in South Africa and Scotland.

“Our commitment to facing up to the wrongs of the past is unwavering, and will remain so irrespective of this legal process. Our door is always open to any of our former pupils who wish to discuss their experiences.”

By Stanley Senya

Accra, Oct. 21, GNA – The Slamm Foundation, in partnership with the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) and the National Youth Authority (NYA), has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the country’s digital transformation.

This is by equipping young people with essential skills in cybersecurity and Information Technology (IT).

The week-long Cybersecurity and IT Training Programme, held in Kumasi, brought together over 120 young participants and offered practical instruction in cybersecurity monitoring and policy, basic networking, IT audit, digital forensics, and investigative tools.

Dr. Samuel Boateng, Chief Executive Officer of Slamm Foundation said the initiative formed part of the Foundation’s long-term vision to empower African youth with technology-driven skills that are relevant to the global digital economy.

“I have acquired cybersecurity and IT knowledge over the past 25 years, and I believe there’s no better way to give back than to share that knowledge,” he said.

The CEO said the world was changing, and Africa, especially Ghana must be part of this digital revolution.

He said “My wife and I founded Slamm Technology in 2007, and for the past five years, we have trained more than 200,000 young people. Our goal is to train one million within the next ten years.”

He explained that the training aligned with the global Cybersecurity Awareness Month and aimed to help the youth develop the digital competencies needed to create jobs, start technology-driven enterprises, and contribute to national development.

“We are targeting the youth so they can build their technology ideas and create employment opportunities. That’s how we build a stronger digital Ghana,” Dr. Boateng added.

Mrs Francisca Boateng, the Founder, Slamm Foundation expressed commitment to providing further support to the participants.

She encouraged the participants to start applying the knowledge gained in their various communities.

“I wish to congratulate the participants and want to encourage them to make the most of what they have learnt here this week and we are ready and available to support – internships, job opportunities them all the way through,” she added.

Mr Samuel Twum, the Deputy Director of Administration at the ARCC representing the Ashanti Regional Minister commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.

“This training has come at a time when technology and innovation, along with related cybersecurity challenges, are on the rise,” he said.

It covered key cybersecurity concepts, practical demonstrations, and hands-on exercises that have enhanced participants’ skills.

He said the employable IT skills would enable them to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s digital transformation.

Mr. Twum, expressed appreciation to the Slamm Foundation and its partners for their continuous investment in Ghanaian youth, emphasising that the ARCC remained committed to working with such organisations to strengthen the nation’s digital future.

He added that the NYA would continue to collaborate with Slamm Foundation and other partners to connect graduates of the training to firms for internships and job opportunities.

“We want to encourage you not to rush. Volunteer, gain experience, and grow into your dreams. Our doors are always open to support you,” Mr. Amponsah assured.

Fathia Chindo Yahaya, one of the participants said “For the past five days, we have gained knowledge on cybersecurity, networking, and risk management, especially how to identify when a system is under threat and how to address it early.”

She expressed the confidence to go back home and help the women in her community, especially market women, to be vigilant and to use strong passwords to protect their financial accounts.

The Eastern Regional Police Command has assured the public, especially visitors traveling to Akropong for the Odwira Festival, that adequate security measures will be in place before, during, and after the event.

This comes after one person was killed and others were injured following a violent clash during the Odwira Festival at Ahwerease in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region on Wednesday, October 22.

The festival began on Monday, 20th October 2025, and will climax on Friday, 24th October, with a durbar of Chiefs and other commemorative activities.

‘Odo Broni conducted Lumba’s post-mortem without informing his family’ – Papa Shee alleges

Papa Shee (L) has accused Odo Broni (R) of singlehandedly authorising Lumba's post-mortem Papa Shee (L) has accused Odo Broni (R) of singlehandedly authorising Lumba’s post-mortem

In the wake of controversies surrounding the death of Highlife legend Daddy Lumba, close associate to the family, Papa Shee has alleged that Lumba’s ‘mistress’, Odo Broni, conducted a post-mortem examination on the late musician without the knowledge or consent of his family.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM, Papa Shee claimed that during a family meeting held after the one-week observation of Lumba’s passing, it was revealed that an autopsy had already been carried out.

According to him, neither the family head, Lumba’s legal wife Akosua Serwaa, nor his elder sister Ernestina Fosuh were aware of the procedure.

Akosua Serwaa and Ernestina Fosuh petition authorities to probe Lumba’s death

“We had a meeting after the one-week observation for Lumba, and that was when it came as a shock to us that the post-mortem had already been done. That was when it was disclosed, and when we asked, the family head didn’t know anything about it. Akosua Serwaa didn’t know, and even Lumba’s sister had no idea.

“It was at that meeting we all found out that the lady who was living with Lumba, Odo Broni, was the one who went ahead with the post-mortem without informing the family or his original wife. Odo Broni was the one who signed for the post-mortem, and her sister stood in as a witness. She has since admitted to it, saying she didn’t know she was supposed to inform the family,” Papa Shee said.

Meanwhile, Akosua Serwaa and Ernestina Fosuh have petitioned Ghanaian and German authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

In a document dated October 13, 2025, which was signed by the Fosuh family secretary on behalf of Akosua Serwaa and Lumba’s sister, the family expressed concern over what they described as “contradictory statements” about the events leading to the musician’s death.

The document was addressed to the German Embassy in Ghana, Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, and Ghana’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to the family, inconsistencies in Odo Broni’s account have raised doubts and emotional distress among relatives.

They also accused her of negligence during Lumba’s illness and of providing misleading information after his passing.

Moreover, some substances were found in his body, which have been sent to the Standard Board for further investigation. Is the NPP Headed for Political Oblivion?

0

Internal wranglings and factionalism have become the defining features of the NPP’s current state

Political parties, like any human organization, thrive on numbers, unity, and strategic cohesion. Members are the lifeblood of any political entity, not just for their ability to campaign and rally support, but for their critical role in shaping the party’s vision, propagating its ideals, and appealing to its members and undecided voters.

Ghana Medical Trust Fund to partner with NLA to improve healthcare delivery

0

The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Mohammed Abdul Salam, has assured the Ghana Medical Trust Fund of the Authority’s commitment to collaborate with them to find sustainable ways of supporting regional and teaching hospitals with essential medical equipment and resources across the country.

Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, and her team, on Wednesday, 22 October, called on the Director-General of NLA, Mr. Abdul-Salam, and the Deputy Director-General, Mr. Eric Yeboah Wadie, to discuss potential areas of collaboration aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery.

Highlighting the urgent need to upgrade health facilities nationwide, Obuobia Darko-Opoku pointed out that many hospitals operate under dire conditions, lacking essential diagnostic and treatment equipment such as MRI and CT scan machines, dialysis units, and breast screening facilities.

She explained that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, established under Act 114, has begun a comprehensive needs assessment of all six teaching hospitals and ten regional hospitals in Ghana, and the findings reveal significant gaps in equipment and infrastructure that require urgent attention.

“Our health facilities are on their knees, and we can no longer pretend about it. When you visit some of these hospitals, you leave wondering how our healthcare system is surviving. The Government alone cannot carry the burden. We are inviting corporate institutions to partner with us in retooling our hospitals so that together we can make a lasting difference.” She said.

She urged the NLA to consider supporting specific hospital projects as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, emphasizing that such partnerships would have a lasting impact on healthcare delivery in Ghana.

In response, the Director-General of the NLA, Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, commended the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for its commitment to improving healthcare and assured them of the NLA’s willingness to collaborate with them. He stated that the Authority’s leadership is open to exploring mechanisms for regular contributions to the Fund as part of its CSR framework.

“I believe strongly that if we treat healthcare funding as a shared responsibility, we can achieve great things together. The idea of supporting the Ghana Medical Trust Fund aligns perfectly with our CSR objectives. We could even consider adopting one project at a time and see it through to completion.” Mr. Abdul -Salam said.

Mr. Abdul-Salam further noted that partnerships like this reinforce the broader national agenda of using proceeds from the lottery to support good causes and improve the well-being of Ghanaians.

The Deputy Director-General of NLA, Mr. Eric Yeboah Wadie, expressed excitement at the partnership and reiterated the Authority’s preparedness to support initiatives that make a difference in society.

The NLA and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund share the common goal of contributing to national development and improving the lives of Ghanaians. Together, they can ensure that essential health facilities receive support while the lives of numerous individuals are improved across the country.

'Greed is a fat demon!' – Nana Aba reacts to Buffer Stock Company scandal

Abdul‑Wahab Hanan Aludiba and Nana Aba Anamoah Abdul‑Wahab Hanan Aludiba and Nana Aba Anamoah

Popular media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has weighed in on recent revelations surrounding alleged misconduct at the National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) during the previous administration.

Recently, on October 22, 2025, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, during a media briefing, presented evidence from investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

That evidence allegedly links the former NAFCO CEO Abdul‑Wahab Hanan Aludiba and his wife to over GH¢40 million in suspicious transactions transferred through several enterprises during his tenure at NAFCO.

He further disclosed that investigators have uncovered numerous luxurious properties, including properties in Airport Hills (near KIA), Labone and Tamale, allegedly linked to Alubia and his wife.

See full list of properties allegedly acquired by former NAFCO CEO

Reacting to a list of the alleged properties in a post on X, Nana Aba, who could not hold back her anger, accused Alubia of greed.

“Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth, and whatever you feed it is never enough. Greedy monster!” she wrote.

Her post joined that of many Ghanaians who took to social media to express their shock at the revelations.

Meanwhile, Abdul‑Wahab Hanan Aludiba has strongly denied corruption allegations levelled against him by the AG. According to him, the claims are “false,” “deeply regrettable,” and “damaging” to his reputation.

Aludiba insisted he had no involvement in the cited issues, asserted that he remains committed to honesty and transparency, and disclosed that he has instructed his legal team to review the matter and consider appropriate action to protect his good name.

No Ghanaian club has advanced after home defeat in CAF knockouts

0

Asante Kotoko lost 1-0 to Wydad at the Accra Sports Stadium Asante Kotoko lost 1-0 to Wydad at the Accra Sports Stadium

For nearly six decades, Ghanaian clubs have battled across the continent in CAF inter-club competitions, but one haunting statistic continues to persist. Since 1966, no Ghanaian side has ever managed to progress to the next round after losing the first leg at home in a knockout tie.

A Curse That Started in 1966

The trend began with Asante Kotoko in the 1966 African Cup of Champions Clubs quarter-finals. The Porcupine Warriors lost 1-0 at home to Stade Abidjan of Ivory Coast and could only draw 2-2 away, bowing out 3-2 on aggregate.

Over the years, Ghanaian giants such as Hearts of Oak, Great Olympics, AshantiGold (then Goldfields), and Wa All Stars have all fallen to the same fate. The most recent casualties, Nsoatreman FC and Bibiani GoldStars, suffered identical eliminations in 2024 and 2025, respectively, after home defeats.

A Long List of Near Misses and Heartbreaks

In 1974, Hearts of Oak lost 1-2 to Simba SC in Accra before a goalless draw in Tanzania ended their hopes.

A year later, Great Olympics went down 0-2 at home to Enugu Rangers and were again beaten 2-1 in Nigeria.

The Phobians’ heartbreak continued in the 1977 African Cup final, losing 0-1 to Hafia FC at home and 3-2 away, handing the Guineans a 4-2 aggregate triumph.

The 1980s brought no reprieve as AS Bilima of Congo Brazzaville defeated Hearts 3-1 in Accra and 1-0 in Brazzaville. The 1990s followed suit, AshantiGold lost 2-0 to ASEC Mimosas at home and could only manage a 0-0 draw in Abidjan in 1995.

In recent years, Wa All Stars, Kotoko, Nsoatreman FC, and Bibiani GoldStars have all exited continental campaigns under similar circumstances.

Only Kotoko (0-0 vs ES Sétif in 2021), Hearts (0-0 vs Simba in 1974), and AshantiGold (0-0 vs ASEC in 1995) have managed to avoid defeat in the away return leg after losing at home, but none progressed.

Kotoko’s Impressive Away Record Offers Hope

Despite the grim history, Asante Kotoko remain Ghana’s most successful side on the road in Africa.

The club boasts 16 away victories in CAF inter-club competitions, dating back to a 3-0 win over Etoile Filante in 1966.

Other notable triumphs include wins against TP Englebert (now TP Mazembe) in 1971, ASEC Mimosas in 1992, Cotonsport Garoua in 2019, and Kadiogo FC in 2022.

Their most recent came in Nigeria, a 1-0 win over Kwara United in the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup.

However, Kotoko have only won on penalties once in CAF history, in the 1971 competition, underlining the challenge they face when chasing aggregate deficits.

Rare North African Triumphs

Only two Ghanaian clubs have managed away victories on North African soil, both on Tunisian grounds and both on Saturdays.

In the 2000 CAF Champions League final, Hearts of Oak pulled off a famous 2-1 win over Esperance de Tunis, with goals from Ismael Addo and Emmanuel Osei Kuffour. That victory paved the way for the Phobians to lift the trophy in Accra a week later.

Five years later, King Faisal Babes stunned AS Marsa 2-1 in the 2005 CAF Confederation Cup group stage, courtesy of goals from Habib Mohammed and Eric Gawu.

Can Kotoko Break the 59-Year Curse?

With Asante Kotoko trailing Wydad Athletic Club 1-0 from the first leg in Kumasi, they head to Casablanca knowing the odds — and history — are stacked against them.

No Ghanaian club has overturned a home-leg deficit in almost 59 years of CAF knockout football.

But with a proven away record, a resilient squad, and Karim Zito’s last three unbeaten away form, the Porcupine Warriors are determined to rewrite the history books.

If Kotoko manages to pull it off, it will not only secure qualification, but it will end one of Ghana’s longest-standing continental football curses.

The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints Supports ‘Heal Komfo Anokye Project’

Elder Alfred Kyungu (right)handing over the medical equipment to management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated essential medical equipment to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in support of the Heal Komfo Anokye Project (HeKAP), a major renovation initiative spearheaded by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The donated items include 10 dual ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) medicine trolleys, 20 patient monitors, 15 hydraulic patient stretchers, 30 wheelchairs, 40 drip stands, 40 cardiac tables, 10 medicine trolleys, 34-folding bed screens, 15 electronic hospital beds, 10 bedside lockers, and 15 crash trolleys.

The items are expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare and ease the work load on medical professionals.

Speaking at the event, Second Counsellor in the Africa West Area Presidency of the Church, Elder Isaac K. Morrison, described the donation as a compassionate and prayerful response to a request made by the Heal KATH Project team about a year ago.

“These items are not merely tools, they are instruments of healing, symbols of our solidarity, and expressions of God’s love for His children. At the core of our faith is the eternal truth that every person is a beloved child of God, each life is precious,” Elder Morrison said.

Elder Morrison commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his visionary leadership in launching the Heal KATH Project, and reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to supporting the initiative.

“Our humanitarian efforts are expressions of our faith in Jesus Christ. They are not limited by nationality, ethnicity, or religion. We seek to follow the Saviour’s example by reaching out to all of God’s children,” he added.

President of the Africa West Area of the Church, Elder Alfred Kyungu, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to collaborate with KATH, noting that the Church’s motivation for humanitarian work stems from its desire to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ.

“We are happy to collaborate with this wonderful hospital. As a Church, we are not trying to prove to anyone that we can do this, we are trying to live the gospel. This is exactly what Jesus Christ did, so we are following Him,” Elder Kyungu said.

He also acknowledged the hospital’s request for additional support, and assured management that the Church would prayerfully consider it.

“We have heard your request. This time, we are not making any promises, but we will look at the need and see if it is possible. If we have the means to support, we will,” he added.

Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, expressed deep gratitude to the Church, describing the donation as a significant boost to the hospital’s operations and ongoing renovation efforts.

“When the King called for support through the Heal Komfo Anokye Project, we received a number of donations. After a brief pause, the project is restarting, and I am confident that very soon the entire hospital will be renovated,” he said.

He disclosed that the donation would have been difficult to obtain without the Church’s intervention, noting that the hospital would otherwise have had to rely on its limited resources.

“We are so grateful for these donations because, frankly, we do not have the means to procure such essential equipment on our own. We face many challenges, so this support means a great deal to us,” Dr. Baidoo added.

He appealed for continued partnership, encouraging the Church to consider further support in the coming years as the hospital progresses toward completing its renovation.

“Looking at the extensive work required, we may even spend more than initially projected. We will be pleased if this can be communicated to the Saints so that they may continue to extend a helping hand. With your support and that of other well-meaning Ghanaians, this project will surely be completed,” he said.

As a demonstration of appreciation, Dr. Baidoo announced that a section of the renovated hospital block would be dedicated to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “That is a promise we will fulfil,” he assured.

Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Fred Adomako Boateng, also commended the Church for its generosity, noting that the donation would significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the region.

“With universal health coverage, everyone should have access to quality healthcare. I believe the gesture you have extended today will go a long way to deepen the quality of service we so desire. In sub-Saharan Africa, our challenges are not only about coverage and access but also about the depth and quality of care we provide. This donation will go a long way in addressing that gap,” he said.

A Daily Guide Report

Seal your legacy by championing Dr Nkrumah’s nuclear dream

0

Your Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama,

You have long demonstrated deep admiration for Ghana’s founding father, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, a man whose vision for a sovereign, self-reliant, and technologically advanced Ghana still inspires millions today.

Among Nkrumah’s boldest and most far-sighted ambitions was his desire to bring nuclear energy to Ghana, not for war, but for peace and economic growth. And now, Mr President, you have the singular opportunity in your Legacy Presidential term to transform that vision into reality, to leave your mark not only as a leader of your time but as the one who carried forward Nkrumah’s unfinished dream.

A Legacy That Awaits Fulfilment

In 1963, Dr Nkrumah established the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) as a cornerstone of our nation’s scientific future. He believed strongly that nuclear energy would be the backbone of Ghana’s industrialisation and long-term energy security. Though political events delayed the fulfilment of that dream, the vision never died. And today, Ghana is not starting from scratch.

More Than Three Decades of Readiness

President, for over 30 years, Ghana has worked steadily with international partners, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and countries with advanced nuclear programs through sustained technical cooperation, education, and workforce training.

Through these decades of quiet, diligent preparation:

• Ghana has built a highly skilled local workforce of nuclear scientists (home and abroad), engineers, technicians, and regulators ready to operate and manage a nuclear energy program safely and efficiently.

• The country has successfully operated a research reactor at GAEC and completed several IAEA milestones, demonstrating commitment, capacity, and credibility.

• Key national institutions have been established or strengthened, including the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, to meet international safety and oversight standards. In simple terms: Ghana is ready.

This is not an aspiration built on hope alone; it is backed by decades of capacity building, technical expertise, and international confidence.

Why You, Why Now?

President Mahama, your legacy already includes transformative strides in infrastructure, education, and energy access. But there remains a powerful, unfinished chapter that only you can complete.

Before you leave office, you can be the president who cuts the sod for Ghana’s first nuclear power plant. Not just as a developmental milestone, but as a symbolic act of continuity linking your leadership to that of Nkrumah in a direct and powerful way.

By championing this final leap:

• You will ensure Ghana’s long-term energy independence and reliability.

• You will unlock industrial potential, as stable base-load power attracts investment and boosts productivity.

• You will elevate Ghana as a continental leader in science and innovation, inspiring future generations.

A Legacy Cast in Stone

Dr Nkrumah laid the foundation. Ghana’s scientists and engineers have spent over three decades preparing the ground. All that remains is a leader who understands Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s nuclear energy access vision to cut the sod, authorise the build, and set Ghana irreversibly on the path to nuclear energy.

President, this is your moment. Let it not be said that we waited for the world to act while we stood idle. Let it be remembered that under your leadership, Ghana moved from readiness to realisation.

Let it be said that President Mahama not only honour Nkrumah in word, but in action.

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is said to be leading the flagbearer race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A September 2025 poll conducted by Global Info Analytics indicates that Dr Bawumia, who was the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, is holding a commanding national advantage over his contenders in the race.

The data released by Global Info Analytics shows that 72 per cent of voters who supported the former Vice President in the 2023 primary still prefer him to his closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, who is preferred by 20 per cent of the voters in the previous election.

According to the poll, Dr Bawumia’s stronghold is the Ashanti Region, with 72 per cent of voters in the last presidential primary standing firm with him in the forthcoming flagbearer race, while Kennedy Agyapong garners a paltry 20 per cent voter retention support.

This means that the former Vice President is likely to be retained as the NPP presidential candidate in the 2028 election.

The Global Info Analytics poll also showed that 63 per cent of disgruntled NPP supporters in the Ashanti Region who voted for the National Democratic Congress’s John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 election believe that Dr Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP in 2028.

On Friday, October 10, the Election Committee of the NPP held a balloting for the five presidential aspirants.

Below is how the aspirants will be placed on the presidential ballot based on the numbers they picked during the balloting:

  1. Kennedy Agyapong
  2. Dr Bryan Acheampong
  3. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
  4. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum
  5. Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong

The five aspirants have intensified their campaigns, crisscrossing the country to canvass for votes from NPP delegates as the flagbearer race draws nearer.

The poll showed Agyapong leading in nine out of 16 regions, with both candidates urged to intensify their campaigns.

Many Ghanaians on social media reacted to the new poll regarding the race for flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.

The poll conducted by a team of academics puts Dr Bawumia in second place, securing between 32.21% and 39.51% of delegate support.

34 charged with rioting and causing harm

0

The 34 suspects arrested following a violent clash at Ahwerease during the Odwira Festival have been arraigned before the Mampong Magistrate Court, the Eastern Regional Police have confirmed.

Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, in an interview on Citi Prime News on Thursday, October 23, noted that the suspects face charges of rioting with offensive weapons and causing harm.

The incident occurred during a ritual meant to herald the Odwira Festival at Ahwerease in the Akuapem South Municipality. A dispute arose over who had the rightful authority to perform the ritual lifting the ban on noise-making, leading to a violent confrontation.

Superintendent Tetteh explained that the misunderstanding resulted in gunfire that injured four people. One of the victims, 45-year-old Isaac Nana Kwasi, was rushed to KOM Hospital at Aburi but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“All the 34 who were arrested following the disturbances at Ahwerease that led to the death of a 45-year-old man one Isaac Nana Kwasi have all been arraigned before the Mampong Magistrate Court this morning and the charges that were proffered against them are rioting with offensive weapon and causing harm.”

“What happened was that there was a ritual that was to be performed heralding the Odwira festival at Ahwerease. Therewas a misunderstanding as to who was the rightful person to perform that particular ritual, that is the lifting on the ban on noise making. So that led to the misunderstanding that resulted in the shooting that got the four people- one of whom died unfortunately on arrival when he was rushed to the KOM Hospital at Aburi.”

It’s difficult for female artistes to survive in the industry – Tinny

0

Ghanaian rapper Nii Addo Quaynor, popularly known as Tinny has shared his thoughts on the struggles female musicians face in Ghana’s music industry.

Speaking in an interview on Daybreak Hitz on October 22, 2025, Tinny noted that the number of female artistes in the industry has always been low, attributing it to the challenges they encounter in sustaining their careers.

“We don’t have enough female musicians, it’s always been like that. It’s very difficult for female artistes to penetrate the industry, and when they do, they fade out quickly” he said.

According to the rapper, the female artistes need to possess resilience and determination in order to succeed in the music industry.

“It’s not new at all. You have to be tough enough to make it as a female artiste” he added.

‘I’m disappointed in President Mahama’s tinkering with vital state institutions’

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over what he describes as excessive political interference in critical state institutions, warning that such actions could destabilise Ghana’s democracy.

According to citinewsroom.com report on October 22, 2025, Agyepong said he was deeply disappointed in the President’s handling of the military and judiciary, institutions he believes must remain independent and free from political manipulation.

“I am a bit more disappointed in our current president, the way he dealt with the army, which I felt was touching a very vital state institution. So, I feel very uncomfortable when I see presidents tinker with state institutions,” he lamented.

Kwabena Agyepong decries over-politicisation of Ghana’s governance system

He further expressed concern that the President’s recent decisions have blurred the separation of powers that underpins Ghana’s democratic system.

“Not only that, but he also moved on to the judiciary, which is one of the three legs of our democracy. I think that the idea that one leg of democracy can take over the other is something that all of us have to repudiate and find a way to protect,” he cautioned.

Agyepong’s remarks come in the wake of President Mahama’s controversial dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo on September 1, 2025, under Article 146(9) of the Constitution.

The move followed a Committee of Inquiry’s recommendation after finding allegations of misbehaviour proven.

The NPP hopeful also referenced the President’s earlier decision in March 2025 to overhaul the top hierarchy of the Ghana Armed Forces, which led to the removal of the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chiefs of Army, Navy, and Air Staff, along with 12 other senior officers.

Agyepong urged respect for institutional independence, saying Ghana’s democratic progress depends on keeping political influence out of the military, judiciary, and other key arms of government.

From supercharged Ferraris to million-dollar Bugattis, footballers are not just lighting up the pitch, but they are also owning some of the world’s most exotic machines.

With massive salaries, sponsorships, and image rights, the beautiful game’s elite are filling their garages with cars that could rival royal collections.

Here’s a look at 10 football superstars and the luxury cars they drive:

Lionel Messi – Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti ($30 million)

Arguably the most expensive car owned by any footballer, Messi’s rare 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti is a collector’s dream.

Only four were ever made, and it’s believed the Argentine icon bought it at an auction once attended by Cristiano Ronaldo himself.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Bugatti La Voiture Noire ($15 million)

Ronaldo’s garage is legendary, featuring Rolls-Royces, McLarens, and Ferraris, but the crown jewel is his Bugatti La Voiture Noire.

From Cheetah FC to the Black Stars: The rise of Kwasi Sibo

One of the rarest cars ever built, this sleek black hypercar is a perfect symbol of his taste for exclusivity and perfection.

Neymar Jr. – Lamborghini Veneno ($3.2 million)

Flamboyant on and off the pitch, Neymar owns a Lamborghini Veneno, one of only 13 in existence.

Worth over $3 million, it matches the Brazilian star’s flashy lifestyle and love for all things luxurious.

Karim Benzema – Bugatti Chiron ($3 million)

The Frenchman’s car collection is pure opulence. His garage boasts a Bugatti Chiron, Ferrari 488 Pista, and Rolls-Royce Wraith.

Benzema, before leaving for the Middle East, was often seen cruising in his black Chiron, valued at roughly $3 million.

Erling Haaland – Mercedes-AMG One (£2.7 million)

The Norwegian goal machine’s love for speed goes beyond the pitch. His AMG One hypercar, inspired by Formula 1 technology, is capable of hitting 350 km/h and is one of only 275 units ever made.

Kylian Mbappé – Ferrari SF90 Stradale ($500,000)

Real Madrid’s superstar forward keeps it sleek and sporty with a Ferrari SF90 Stradale, a plug-in hybrid supercar that hits 0–100 km/h in under 2.5 seconds.

He’s also been spotted with a Mercedes-Benz V-Class for more casual days.

Paul Pogba – Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge ($400,000)

Known for his flair, Pogba’s Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge is as bold as his hairstyles. The Frenchman has also owned a Lamborghini Aventador and a Maserati Quattroporte.

Mohamed Salah – Bentley Continental GT ($250,000)

Liverpool’s Egyptian King prefers class over flash. His Bentley Continental GT combines speed and sophistication, much like Salah himself, and is a regular sight around Merseyside.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Ferrari LaFerrari ($2 million)

DA to table motion of no confidence in Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga said that billions were spent on the crime wardens without proper planning or approvals.

The DA in Gauteng has signalled its intention to table a motion of no confidence in Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

The party released a statement on Thursday morning, after which it held a press briefing at the provincial legislature building in Johannesburg.

Lesufi’s temporary halting of the crime wardens project appears to be the last straw for the second-largest party in the legislature.

“We warned that the recruits were not adequately trained, insufficiently resourced, and did not meet the legal criteria to serve as peace officers,” stated DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga.

“Premier Lesufi chose to ignore these warnings, pressing ahead with a costly programme that has now collapsed under its own weight.”

Motion of no confidence in Lesufi

Lesufi’s administration had been under pressure, most notably due to the chaos within the Department of Health in the province.

“We will therefore be tabling a motion of no confidence in Premier Lesufi for his reckless and irresponsible implementation of the failed Amapanyaza project. The DA will be taking strong action to hold Lesufi accountable,” said Msimanga.

Msimanga stated at the midday briefing that the DA had complained that the Premier could not make a unilateral decision on the mass employment of people working in such a key environment.

The DA Gauteng leader added that no financial provisions had been made and that no feasibility study was conducted for the crime wardens.

“Government has now spent over R2 billion on this project. He took money that was supposed to have gone towards the NPOs in social development, money that was supposed to go to the department of health,”

The margins within the provincial legislature are razor-thin, with only six seats separating the ANC and the DA, which have 28 and 22 seats, respectively.

MK party and EFF have a combined 19 seats ,eight and 11, respectively, with the remaining seven parties holding a collective 11 seats.

Seven men charged for allegedly attacking Tesano Police Commander

0

Seven men have been arraigned before the Achimota District Court for allegedly conspiring to assault a senior police officer at the Tesano Police Station in Accra.

The accused — Ebenezer Yaw Ankomah, a 29-year-old student; Festus Annor, 27, an okada rider; Eugene Ekow Enchil, 32, a dispatch rider; Anthony Amponsah, 25, a blogger; Muskin Mohammed, 28, a dispatch rider; Ishawu Mumuni, 25, an okada rider; and Banisah Joseph, 31, also a dispatch rider — were charged with conspiracy to commit crime, assault on a public officer, and unlawful assembly.

According to court documents (Police Tesano Case R.O. No. 299/2025), the incident occurred on October 8, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m. when the accused persons, led by the first accused, Ankomah, allegedly organised about 40 motorbike riders to storm the premises of the Tesano Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

The group reportedly arrived at the station, blaring their horns and chanting war songs. Police said the men attempted to stage a riot over undisclosed grievances.

The complainant, Superintendent Mrs. Comfort Forkah, the Divisional MTTD Commander at Tesano, stepped out of her office to engage the group but was allegedly attacked and assaulted without provocation. With the help of her team, the police managed to subdue and arrest seven of the men while others fled the scene.

The suspects were later handed over to the Tesano Divisional CID for further investigation. Following police inquiries, they were charged and brought before the Achimota District Court.

They face three counts — Conspiracy to Commit (Assault on Public Officer), Assault on Public Officer contrary to Section 205 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and Unlawful Assembly contrary to Section 296(21) of the same Act.

The prosecutor, B. Arther, told the court that the actions of the accused were not only unlawful but also endangered public order.

The case, investigated by Detective Sergeant Meshack Nkrumah, has been adjourned for further hearing as the accused await the court’s decision on bail or remand.

Former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra, sources close to the family have confirmed to CitiNewsroom.com.

She was 76 years old.

Nana Konadu, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, holding the position across both military and civilian administrations led by her husband.

She served from June 4, 1979, to September 24, 1979, under the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), and again from December 31, 1981, to January 6, 1993, under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

She continued in the role during her husband’s two constitutional terms from January 7, 1993 to January 6, 2001.

Beyond her role as First Lady, Nana Konadu was a pioneer in women’s empowerment and political activism, founding the 31st December Women’s Movement and later the National Democratic Party (NDP).

In June 2012, she split from the NDC and formed the National Democratic Party (NDP). The Electoral Commission subsequently (EC) disqualified her and 11 other presidential candidates for failing to meet requirements before the September 30 deadline to file nomination documents.

She contested again in 2016 on the ticket of the NDP.

In November 2018, she launched her first book, It Takes a Woman, a 331-page biography chronicling her journey from her youth in 1948 through to her years in political and social advocacy.

The book was the first of four volumes she intended to publish, offering “deep insights into her political activism and experiences.”

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings made history in 2016 as the first woman to contest the presidency of Ghana, cementing her legacy as one of the most influential figures in the nation’s political and social landscape.

Early Life and Education

Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (née Agyeman) received her early education at Ghana International School and later at Achimota School, where she met her future husband, Jerry John Rawlings.

She pursued higher education at the University of Science and Technology (now KNUST), studying Art and Textiles, before earning a diploma in Interior Design from the London College of Arts in 1975.

Over the years, she expanded her academic and professional expertise with diplomas in Personnel Management and Development Studies from Ghanaian institutions and completed fellowships in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Management in the United States.

She founded and led the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM) in 1982, an influential organization that sought to empower women socially, politically, and economically.

Under her leadership, the movement became one of the most impactful women’s groups in Africa, mobilising over two million women across Ghana.

In 2009, she was elected First Vice Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and made history in 2016 as the first woman to contest Ghana’s presidency, running on the ticket of the National Democratic Party (NDP)—a party she founded after leaving the NDC. Her bold move earned her the nickname “the Hillary Clinton of Africa.”

Advocacy and Impact

Throughout her public life, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings was a formidable advocate for gender equality and social justice. Under her leadership, the 31st December Women’s Movement established over 870 pre-schools, promoted adult literacy, family planning, child development, and women’s participation in governance.

Her efforts were instrumental in Ghana becoming the first country to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991.

She also championed the Intestate Succession Law (PNDCL 111), a landmark legislation that secured inheritance rights for widows, reshaping Ghana’s customary laws on marriage and property.

Through tireless grassroots mobilization, she inspired women across the country to engage in politics and civic life, leading to a marked increase in female representation in Parliament in the early 1990s.
