The meeting, according to a statement from his office , was aimed at fostering unity and camaraderie among the aspirants as the party prepares for its presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026.

EU warns galamsey could hurt Ghana’s exports

EU

The European Union (EU) has cautioned that Ghana’s illegal mining crisis, commonly known as galamsey, could have serious implications for the country’s agricultural exports if mercury contamination continues to affect farm produce.

Speaking on the Joy Super Morning Show on Tuesday, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, said the Union was deeply concerned about the environmental and health impact of illegal mining, stressing that polluted agricultural products could face export restrictions.

“I wouldn’t want any consumer to have polluted goods or farm products. I wouldn’t get Ghanaian or European consumers to eat sweet potatoes with mercury residues in them,” Ambassador Skinnebach said.

“So yes, it will impact your exports.”

The Ambassador noted that while the EU is ready to support Ghana in addressing the menace, solving the problem ultimately requires political will and coordinated national action.

“We’re willing to help, but first and foremost, a political solution is required. Once we have that solution, we are ready to assist — be it with technology, regulatory frameworks, or other support,” he added.

Ambassador Skinnebach emphasised that the EU recognises the severity of the galamsey challenge and remains committed to helping Ghana tackle it.

“We acknowledge the seriousness of the issue for Ghana and, as a long-standing partner, we are eager to help,” he said.

His comments come at a time when the government faces growing pressure from civil society, environmentalists, and development partners to intensify the fight against illegal mining, which has degraded vast water bodies and farmlands across the country.

Sam George, Ntim Fordjour and 8 others reintroduce Anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Parliament

A bipartisan group of ten Members of Parliament has reintroduced the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill in Parliament, reigniting one of the country’s most divisive legislative debates.

In a post shared by Kwaku Asante on X on October 21, 2025, the coalition, led by MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George NDC, and MP for Assin South, Ntim Fordjour announced the reintroduction of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021.

The bill seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities and their promotion, advocacy, or funding.

It proposes up to three years’ imprisonment for engaging in same-sex acts and up to ten years for promoting or financing LGBTQ+ activities.

Parliament to debate on LGBTQ on October 21

The document titled Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025 and shared on X on October 21, 2025, listed the members of the coalition as; “John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South, Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo-Prampram, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzra, MP for Ho West, Helen Adjoa Ntoso, MP for Krachi West, Nurideen Muhammed Mummuni, MP for Nalerigu/Gambaga, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, MP for Old Tafo, Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana, MP for Gushegu, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, MP for Dadekotopon, Dr Tiah Abdul Kabiru Mahama, MP for Walewale and Anthony Mmieh, MP for Odotobri”.

Members of the coalition argue that it is necessary to safeguard Ghanaian culture and traditional family values.

The reintroduction follows widespread criticism from international organisations, including the United Nations and human rights groups, which describe the proposed law as a violation of fundamental rights.

The original Bill, introduced in 2021, stalled earlier this year after injunction suits were filed at the Supreme Court challenging its constitutionality.

Although the court is yet to rule, the sponsors say the new motion will keep the legislative process alive.

The decision by ten MPs from both major political parties highlights rare bipartisan consensus on the matter.

Parliament is expected to debate the bill extensively in the coming weeks, with heated exchanges anticipated.

In its earlier stages, the bill attracted over 150 submissions from religious groups, traditional leaders, and civil society organisations during public hearings by the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.

Faith-based groups, representing a majority of Ghana’s population, continue to back the legislation, while human rights advocates are mobilising renewed opposition.

Current anti-LGBTQ+ bill is effectively dead, should be government-sponsored – Mahama proposes

The Speaker of Parliament is expected to refer the reintroduced bill to the relevant committee for consideration, marking the beginning of its second legislative journey.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei and Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, are also introducing the Property Rights of Spouses Bill.

Galamsey threatens agric exports – EU cautions Ghana

0

The European Union (EU) has cautioned that Ghana’s illegal mining menace, popularly known as galamsey, poses a grave threat to the country’s agricultural exports due to mercury contamination in farm produce.

EU Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, expressed deep concern about the environmental and health risks associated with illegal mining, warning that polluted agricultural products could soon face restrictions on international markets.

“I wouldn’t want any consumer to have polluted goods or farm products. I wouldn’t get Ghanaian or European consumers to eat sweet potatoes with mercury residues in them,” Ambassador Skinnebach said in an interview with Joy FM. “So yes, it will impact your exports,” he stressed.

His remarks come amid growing calls from civil society, environmental groups, and development partners for the government to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining, which continues to devastate water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves across the country.

Ambassador Skinnebach reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to support Ghana in addressing the galamsey challenge but emphasised that lasting results will depend on strong political will and effective national coordination.

“We’re willing to help, but first and foremost, a political solution is required. Once we have that solution, we are ready to assist — be it with technology, regulatory frameworks, or other support.

“We acknowledge the seriousness of the issue for Ghana and, as a long-standing partner, we are eager to help,” he added.

Ghana performed well at 2025 Hockey AFCON despite Men’s Team podium miss- Isaac Graham

Despite Ghana missing out on a podium finish at the recently ended 2025 Hockey AFCON in both men’s and women’s categories, Ghana Hockey Association Executive Board Member, Isaac Graham, says the country performed well in the tournament that was held in Egypt.

Ghana finished second behind South Africa in the women’s category after losing 4-0 to South Africa in the final while Ghana’s male team finished fifth as South Africa emerged as winners.

South Africa will represent Africa in the Hockey World Cup in both gender categories and despite missing out on qualifying to world event and not bagging a medal in the men’s category, Isaac Graham believes Team Ghana did well.

“I will put it as a very good performance by the [Ghana] team. They really did well… I think the team really performance very well. Yes we were looking at having a podium finish for both teams but we got it for only the ladies.”

Executive Board Member of Ghana Hockey Federation, Isaac Graham

“The men did well but they couldn’t get to the podium but a lot of learning for them also because they have a very young team so most of them are having [to compete] for the first time on the international stage so it’s going to be a learning [curve] for all of us and we will build on it from here” Isaac Graham said in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports.

Senyo Hosi is the Convenor of the One Ghana Movement Senyo Hosi is the Convenor of the One Ghana Movement

The Convenor of the One Ghana Movement and the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Senyo Hosi, has asserted that the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) should not be seen as a primary contributor to the country’s illegal mining crisis.

According to Hosi, Ghana would still be grappling with the menace of illegal mining even without the establishment of GoldBod.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on October 18, 2025, as monitored by GhanaWeb Business, he emphasised that GoldBod is not the sole factor in the problem, noting that there will always be a market for gold regardless of regulatory structures.

He described the establishment of GoldBod as a strategic intervention aimed at curbing gold smuggling and the illicit gold trade that has plagued the country for over two decades.

GoldBod’s track-and-trace system begins in first quarter of 2026 – CEO hints

“I commend the establishment of GoldBod. For years, we’ve been producing and exporting gold with minimal oversight and accountability. There’s a significant discrepancy between the gold values reported by other countries as originating from Ghana and the figures we claim to have exported,” he explained.

His comments come amid rising concerns about the proliferation of illegal mining activities across Ghana.

Hosi however condemned the ongoing smuggling of gold and called on GoldBod to intensify efforts to curb it.

Seats Of Strength Breast Cancer Awareness Receives Applause

Mami Gyamfua Yeboah (event host) interacting with three survivors at the event

Outstanding number of women who gathered under the pavilion of the Alisa Hotel in Accra to observe the maiden edition of the Seats of Strength conference on breast cancer awareness have applauded the organisation for the initiative.

The project, organised under the Women of Valour Program, founded by broadcast journalist, Nana Aba Anamoah, highlighted the resilience of survivors, promoted open conversations about breast cancer, and raised funds to support those affected by the disease.

Head of the Breast Unit at the Department of Surgery, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital,

Dr. Florence Dedey, stated that breast cancer is the most common cancer in Ghana, accounting for about a third of all female cancers and the second most common cause of cancer deaths.

She said, despite being less common in Ghana compared to developed countries, new cases and deaths have increased by 60-70% over the past 15 years, and are expected to double in the next 15 years.

“In our region, breast cancer often results in poor outcomes due to late diagnosis and inadequate treatment. It’s crucial that we increase our knowledge of breast cancer to make informed decisions and encourage our loved ones to do the same,” she added.

Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator, Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) stressed on the need to confront stigmatisation of breast cancer patients, saying, “Women and men living with breast cancer carry not only the weight of the disease but also the burden of silence, shame and misunderstanding. Today, I urge us all to break that silence, to let us create a culture where people can share their stories without fear.”

Madam Darko-Opoku stated that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is committed to providing access to life-saving diagnostic tools through early detection, offering financial support to women and men battling breast cancer and other non-communicable diseases.

She further stated that the Mahama Care fund seeks to retain and train specialists to ensure quality care is accessible locally, as well as conduct research on diseases to inform proactive measures.

She praised Nana Aba Anamoah and her team for organising the event, saying, “This initiative, born from her heart and mind, provides survivors a platform to share, heal, and find strength together. It takes rare vision and compassion to harness empathy. Nana Aba Anamoah’s pioneering spirit and conviction that something beautiful can emerge from pain will undoubtedly impact generations of women and men, touching every survivor.”

Nana Aba Anamoah expressed her gratitude to the survivors for sharing their story, saying, “We should share our strength and courage. Looking around this room, I see women who’ve faced incredible challenges and fought battles that would have broken many. Yet, they’ve stood tall, refused to cower, and held onto hope. Today, we celebrate their courage and resilience. It takes bravery to share one’s story, and we’re honoured to have these women on this platform.”

Volta Region’s Etornam Wins GMB25

0

Etornam crowning moment

Etornam, representing the Volta Region, was crowned the winner of Ghana’s Most Beautiful (GMB) 2025 last Sunday at the National Theatre, Accra.

Etornam’s victory marks the third time the Volta Region has claimed the crown, following Emefa in 2012 and Selorm in 2023.

With her win, Etornam took home an impressive prize package, including a brand-new car: a Haval Jolion SUV worth over GH¢400,000, a cash prize of GH¢20,000, a fully sponsored trip abroad courtesy of Global Winds and Travel, and other prizes including a year’s supply of fabric from GTP, plus souvenirs from sponsors.

Etornam’s journey to the crown was remarkable, showcasing her exceptional cultural knowledge, eloquence, and stage presence. She plans to use her platform to champion her Early Childhood Education project, aiming to ensure every child in Ghana has access to quality education.

First runner-up was Asakia, representing the Upper East Region, with Sika, representing the Ashanti Region grabbing the second runner-up position.

Etornam’s journey to the crown was nothing short of inspiring. Out of 16 contestants who represented all regions of Ghana, only five made it to the grand finale after twelve intense weeks of cultural displays, talent showcases, and evictions. Etornam stood tall among her peers with six awards and twelve nominations, the highest ever for the 2025 season.

Her path to victory wasn’t an easy one. Born and raised in Yeji, Etornam endured a tough childhood, growing up in a broken home and facing abuse, stigmatisation, and street life. At one point, she worked as a tro-tro mate just to survive. Despite these challenges, she rose above her circumstances—starting formal education at age 14, and later studying at the Oxford Institute of Business and Journalism after completing her secondary education at Adidome Senior High School.

Throughout the competition, Etornam impressed judges and viewers with her deep cultural knowledge and authentic performances. She proudly represented the Volta Region, showcasing Ewe culture through traditional fabrics like kete and dances such as the Atrikpui and Agbadza war dances—earning applause for her creativity and storytelling.

Her victory also marks a historic milestone—it’s the third time the Volta Region has claimed the GMB crown, making Etornam’s win a celebration for her people and a proud moment in Ghana’s pageant history.

The political landscape of Ghana is under the scalpel in ‘Ghana Politics’, the latest offering from one of the nation’s most experienced security and intelligence veterans, Kofi Bentum Quantson.

The book, reviewed by seasoned journalist and communications specialist Kojo Kwarteng, is positioned not as an academic treatise but as a mandatory read for anyone seeking the unvarnished truth about the country’s state dynamics.

Quantson, a former National Security Co-ordinator and the founding Executive Secretary of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), channels his decades of direct involvement in Ghana’s political-security nexus into a concise, 234-page volume printed by Fahmin Ventures.

The central premise of ‘Ghana Politics’ is encapsulated on its cover with the bold declaration: “No Apologies.”

This statement precedes nine sharp, confrontational questions that immediately challenge the reader and the political class about the nature of their governance: “Ghana Politics; is it funny, confrontational impunity, sensible, nonsense, provocative arrogance, aggressive hypocrisy, corrosive impertinence, massive corruption or what?”

Reviewer Kojo Kwarteng notes that this confrontational style is deeply rooted in Quantson’s practical expertise, arguing that the book avoids rhetorical flattery to offer genuinely informed perspective.

Few international, African and Ghanaian authors offer the same depth of experience in national security and political developments as Quantson, positioning him uniquely to interpret state dynamics. The author is an authority with practical experience and knowledge worth tapping into.

Kwarteng emphasises the author’s unique position, noting that even at over 90 years of age, Quantson “fearlessly states the points and elucidates from untainted language and glasses,” providing a rare, uncompromised account of political life that many academics, leaders, and media personnel hesitate to provide.

The book is structurally designed for maximum accessibility and impact, containing 23 episodes across its pages. This episodic format—which the reviewer describes as blending storytelling, critique, satire, and reflection—makes the book an accessible resource for a wide audience.

Thematically rich titles such as ‘The Castle’, ‘From China With Love Plus Hate’, ‘Ambassador At Lost’ and ‘Konkonsa Democracy’ suggest a broad scope covering institutional critique, diplomatic relations, and the role of the media and public opinion.

Other key topics include ‘Equalisation’, ‘The Prophet Again’ and ‘Nature of Pass Power’, rendering the book highly relevant to contemporary Ghanaian society.

The varied episodes (titles) suggest a multifaceted exploration, not just national history, but perhaps diplomatic comedy… institutional critique… and media… likely offering both insight and wit.

Kwarteng asserts that “Ghana Politics” is not merely an alternative commentary but a “must read document for sustainable living, survivorship, renewal of minds, resetting and true transformation.”

This strong recommendation is underpinned by Quantson’s history of identifying systemic weaknesses in his previous works, such as Ghana National Security… The Dilemma, where he previously detailed how partisan and tribal considerations often sideline critical intelligence, ultimately contributing to instability and stalled national development.

The book is available for purchase at major outlets, including the Airport Shell Filling Station, Legon Bookshop at the University of Ghana, and various online platforms.

In conclusion, ‘Ghana Politics’ by Kofi Bentum Quantson offers a compelling, authoritative, and richly textured take on Ghana’s political scene, rooted in the author’s extensive security and governance experience.

For readers interested in Ghanaian political narratives, national stability, and the interplay of power, memory, and institutions, this book promises both insight and engagement.

Cedi stages major comeback in October after third-quarter decline

The cedi has staged a strong comeback against the US dollar in the first half of October 2025 The cedi has staged a strong comeback against the US dollar in the first half of October 2025

The Ghana cedi has posted a strong appreciation against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar, for a week straight in the first half of October 2025.

According to reports from Bloomberg and the World Bank, the cedi depreciated by about 14% in the third quarter of 2025, raising concerns over its constant fluctuations and slowing its earlier appreciation from over 40% at the end of July to roughly 21% by the end of September.

The cedi has staged a strong comeback against the US dollar in the first half of October 2025, reversing the losses recorded in Q3.

Data compiled from Bloomberg and the World Bank indicate that the cedi’s 14% depreciation in Q3 2025 slowed its earlier gains from over 40% at end-July to roughly 21% by end-September.

Between October 13 and 17, 2025, the cedi appreciated by approximately 9.5% against the dollar, marking one of the strongest weekly gains recorded by the local currency in recent history.

Cedi hits GH¢10.80 to $1

Data from the Bank of Ghana’s interbank exchange rate shows that as of Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the cedi is selling at GH¢10.80 to the dollar.

On the forex market, the cedi is selling at GH¢12.40, much stronger than what it recorded in the third quarter of 2025.

The World Bank noted that with a year-to-date gain of 20%, the cedi’s strength has been buoyed by tight fiscal and monetary policies, rising export revenues, and improved market confidence.

During the same period in 2024, the cedi had lost about 19% against the US dollar.

The Bank further noted that the Ghana cedi was the best-performing currency in Africa for the first eight months of 2025.

Shatta Wale Brought Me To Ghana Just To Disgrace Me, He Must Apologize – Nigerian Promoter, Jiggy

News Hub Creator8h

A significant cross-border dispute has erupted in the West African entertainment scene, as Nigerian music promoter Big Jiggy has launched a vehement public accusation against Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale. In a viral social media outburst, Big Jiggy claimed he was deliberately misled and publicly humiliated during a recent trip to Ghana, allegations that have ignited a fiery debate among fans in both nations.

According to the promoter, he traveled to Ghana under the impression of formalizing a professional collaboration, only to find the situation was a ruse designed to generate online engagement at his expense. He described the experience as a profound betrayal, stating that he had previously held Shatta Wale in high regard as a genuine African entertainer. “They brought me here not for business, but just to disgrace me. Everything was for clout,” Big Jiggy asserted, characterizing the artist as inauthentic and overly reliant on social media validation.

The promoter’s central demand is for a public apology from Shatta Wale and his management team, holding them accountable for what he perceives as a calculated act of disrespect. He further used the platform to caution fans and industry colleagues about the potential disparity between the online personas of celebrities and their real-world conduct, suggesting that some prioritize viral trends over integrity.

As the story gains traction, the entertainment communities in Ghana and Nigeria are closely watching for a response from Shatta Wale’s camp. The silence from the artist’s team has only intensified public speculation and discussion. This incident transcends a simple personal disagreement, touching on broader themes of professional ethics in the digital age, the nature of cross-border collaborations, and the sometimes-blurred line between strategic publicity and exploitative behavior in the modern music industry.

Govt Commits To Promoting Culinary Heritage – Minister

Abla Dzifa Gomashie captured dancing agbadza with dance troupes at the launch

The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has declared the government’s commitment to establishing Ghana’s culinary heritage as a major pillar of the global creative economy.

Speaking at the inaugural launch of the Afro Gastro Festival 2025 at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra last Friday, the minister outlined a strategic vision where Ghanaian food becomes an inducement for job creation, cultural diplomacy, and national development.

“We are preparing our young chefs to showcase our authentic flavours while also adapting them to capture global palates,” Madam Gomashie stated.

She identified the multi-million-dollar global culinary industry as fertile ground for young Ghanaians to build sustainable livelihoods while showcasing the nation’s identity.

The minister further emphasised that the cuisine is a natural gateway to promote other creative sectors. “Together, we want to promote agriculture, fashion, and music, and the platform we can use is food. There’s nowhere that food is served that you don’t find music and people dressed well,” she said.

To facilitate this growth, Madam Gomashie revealed ongoing partnerships with hospitality institutions, culinary schools, local farmers, and entrepreneurs. These collaborations are designed to create platforms that empower chefs to skilfully merge tradition with innovation.

Speaking about the strategic importance of the initiative, Prof. Kobby Mensah, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, emphasised Ghana’s evolving call to the African diaspora.

“From the days of Panafest, we have celebrated our shared heritage. The global call reminds us that Africa has always been home. Through the Year of Return, we extended another call not just to come back, but to reconnect with our roots and rediscover the essence of who we are,” Professor Mensah stated.

The Afro Gastro Festival 2025 was positioned not just as a culinary showcase but as a strategic investment in positioning Ghana as the definitive gateway to Africa’s cultural and creative rebirth.

Support for Bawumia soars, as he takes campaign to Bono Region

0

Former Vice President. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was accorded an enthusiastic welcome and firm assurances of support on Sunday as he continued his campaign in the Bono Region.

Dr Bawumia completed an engaging four-day tour of the Bono East Region on Saturday and headed next to the Bono Region, with visits to Banda, Tain and Wenchi Constituencies respectively.

In all constituencies, members of the party displayed remarkable love for the former Vice President, as they cheered him with three raised fingers, signifying his number 3 position on the ballot paper for the January 31 Congress.

Various speakers from all levels of the party, including constituency executives, MPs, parliamentary candidates, electoral area coordinators and polling station executives, spoke in turns to commend Dr Bawumia’s hard work and commitment to the success of the NPP, and also assure him of their unflinching support.

In Banda, where the Bono Regional tour commenced, the constituency chairman, on behalf of his people, assured Bawumia of their support once again, having voted massively for him during the last primaries.

“We already know who you are so we are eager to vote massively for you, better than what we did in 2023,” the Chairman assured.

“Our elders say the person you already know; you don’t need light in the night to look at their face. All we wanted was for you to come and contest again and by the grace of God, you have come so my people have asked me to inform you that they will repeat in 2026 what they did for you in 2023 during the last primaries.

“In the 2023 primaries, you came here in Banda Constituency and we promised to vote for you and we did just that by placing 3rd in the whole of the Bono Region. And my people say I should assure you again that God willing, on January 31st; they will do even better for you.”

Similar assuring comments were made by party members in Tain and Wenchi constituencies, with Dr. Bawumia expressing gratitude to them and assuring them that he will continue to work with them for victory to be achieved together.

Graham Potter Appointed Sweden Head Coach

0

Graham Porter

Former West Ham manager Graham Potter has been announced as the new head coach of Sweden.

The 50-year-old has accepted the role on an initial short-term basis in a bid to aid Sweden’s faltering World Cup qualification campaign.

Potter said: “I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world’s best leagues during the weeks.

“My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”

Sweden had been seeking a new head coach since the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson following their 1-0 loss to Kosovo on 13 October, a result that made automatic qualification from their group impossible.

However, they could still reach the play-offs even without finishing in the top two of Group B as a result of their success in the 2024-25 Nations League, where they topped their group.

Potter was sacked by West Ham at the end of September after a disappointing start to the season.

Five losses in six games in the 2025-26 campaign had left the Hammers in the Premier League bottom three. Overall, he won just six of 23 matches since joining the east London club in January.

However, Potter retains a positive image in Sweden, having delivered three promotions in four seasons at Ostersund, taking them from the fourth division to the top flight, while also winning a domestic cup in 2017.

Potter also had successful spells managing Brighton and Swansea City before joining Chelsea in 2022 but was dismissed from his role at Stamford Bridge after seven months.

Nkwanta South schools struggle to attract new students amidst security concerns

By Kingsley Mamore

Dambai (O/R) Oct 21, GNA- Schools in Nkwanta South, including Nkwanta Community Day Senior High Technical School and Nkwanta Senior High School (NKWANSEC), are facing a significant challenge in attracting newly admitted students.

As of October 20, 2025, the situation remains dire with only four freshmen reporting to Nkwanta Community Day Senior High Technical despite having 400 vacancies and being allocated 190 students, only 60 students accepted the admission offer.

NKWANSEC is also affected with only eight fresh SHS students reported, and this attributed to the ongoing tribal disturbances in the area.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) has picked up an intel from the community who raised concerns about safety and reputation over shootings and killing of innocent souls, deterring new students from enrolling.

Some teachers who spoke to GNA on condition of anonymity, assured that the administrations were working tirelessly to restore confidence and ensure a secure learning environment.

The teachers appealed to parents to bring their wards to schools, emphasizing that the area is now peaceful and conducive for learning.

No court can force us to drop the name ‘United Party’

0

Solomon Owusu is a leading member of the United Party Solomon Owusu is a leading member of the United Party

The United Party (UP+) has unequivocally stated that it will not comply with any court instruction to change its name.

The party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, asserted that the name is not the exclusive property of any single group, dismissing threats of legal action as mere “wishful thinking.”

Owusu was responding to recent remarks by Tia Kabiru, Member of Parliament for Walewale, who indicated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering legal measures to prevent Alan Kyerematen’s group from using the United Party name.

Kabiru had earlier argued that the choice of name is “problematic,” given the NPP’s historical political lineage to the original United Party (UP) tradition.

In a sharp rebuttal, Solomon Owusu described the Walewale MP’s comments as ill-informed and reflective of a lack of understanding of Ghanaian law — a deficiency he attributed to the MP being an economist rather than a lawyer.

Speaking in an interview on As It Is in Ghana on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM, Mr. Owusu affirmed that the rebranding of the Movement for Change to the United Party was deliberate and purposeful.

He highlighted the party’s core mission: to establish Ghana as the economic powerhouse of Africa by 2040.

According to him, UP+’s vision is anchored on a centrist position and a “UP mindset,” representing a new dawn aimed at ending political acrimony, offering a credible alternative, promoting women’s inclusion, and delivering economic transformation that will result in massive job creation all championed by the party’s leader, Alan Kyerematen.

Owusu noted that while the original United Party had a strained relationship with the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the current UP+ fosters positive relations with the CPP and other political entities.

He further alleged that the NPP has been “hijacked by Akufo-Addo,” transforming it into what he described as the “Nana People’s Party,” insisting that the NPP has lost touch with its founding roots.

On the matter of the name, Owusu was resolute, “No law court, no judge in Ghana can make us change our name.”

The United Party’s core values are centered on promoting integrity, enforcing law and order, encouraging meritocracy, and fostering patriotism.

UP+ also aims to restore discipline in public life and introduce respectful language into political discourse.

The party retains the monarch butterfly as its symbol, representing transformation, resilience, and endurance.

Ghana must permanently fix economic fragility

Bank of Ghana Headquarters Bank of Ghana Headquarters

Stephen Apolima, a policy analyst and researcher, says the deep structural fragility of Ghana’s economy must be properly tackled, rather than simply “soothing” it with dollar injections.

“The Bank of Ghana, in its anxious bid to stabilise the cedi, often behaves like a physician who soothes a fever without curing the infection,” he said.

Apolima, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, explained, “Each injection of foreign currency into the veins of the market cools the patient-economy momentarily, yet the sickness remains untouched, pulsing quietly beneath the surface.”

He stressed that Ghana must not continue to live on borrowed bread, noting, “Our economy inhales imports and exhales dependency.”

He added, “The country’s industrial base, weak and weary, can scarcely support the weight of her consumption because exports, which are modest and often raw, tell a story of a country that sells its inheritance for daily bread.”

The policy analyst urged the BoG not to treat currency weakness with temporary infusions, saying:

“The BoG must dream beyond the next balance sheet.”

“The cedi will not find peace in the vaults of foreign banks, but in the quiet hum of Ghanaian factories; in the cocoa that is processed locally, not shipped raw; in the minerals refined, not smuggled; in the rivers restored, not ruined,” he added.

He concluded that the BoG should anchor policy in productivity, arguing that when the government fully recognises environmental protection as a key economic policy, the cedi may no longer require artificial resuscitation.

Stop complaining and fix it yourselves — NDC’s Nukpenu tells Botwe residents over bad roads

The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has surorised many Ghanaias after he urged residents of Botwe to take initiative in addressing their own community challenges instead of relying solely on government intervention.

During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen monitored by MyNewsGh, host OB read a message from some Botwe residents pleading for their Member of Parliament and the government to fix their deteriorating roads.

Nollywood’s Eve Esin Marries Ghanaian Lover

Eve Esin and her man

Love and culture collided beautifully as Nollywood actress, Eve Esin tied the knot with her Ghanaian sweetheart, Suleman, in a stunning traditional wedding that dazzled guests and fans alike.

Eve Esin, proudly honouring her Oron heritage, made a grand, regal entrance in elegant traditional attire that left guests in awe. The emotional highlight of the day came when a family elder reminded her of her royal lineage, saying:

The event drew a glittering crowd, including top Nollywood stars such as Rita Dominic, Patience Ozokwor, Okon Lagos, Empress Njamah, and Mary Igwe, as well as dignitaries like the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State and the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady.

“We cannot punish you for the wickedness of some people” – Banda Constituency to Bawumia

0

Former Vice President. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been told to rest assured that he will not be held liable for the infractions of some appointees of the past NPP government.

Dr Bawumia, who is on a national campaign tour for the NPP presidential primaries, visited three constituencies, Banda, Tain and Wenchi, in the Bono Region on Monday, October 20, and party members there offered him their reassuring support.

One common theme in the people’s responses to the former Vice President, was that they would not use the “wickedness” of some appointees against him when it is so obvious he was not personally responsible for many of their unresolved concerns.

“We heard your comment the other day that you should not be punished for the misdeeds of some appointees. As for the appointees, some were very wicked to us,” said the Constituency Chairman of Banda, Charles Adjei.

“But the people say I should tell you that because of the love they have for you, they won’t use somebody’s wickedness to punish you. We already know who you are, so we are eager to vote massively for you better than what we did in 2023,” the Chairman assured Dr Bawumia, with the delegates applauding in approval.

“Our elders say the person you already know; you don’t need light in the night to look at their faces. All we wanted was for you to come and contest again, and by the grace of God, you have come, so my people have asked me to inform you that they will repeat in 2026 what they did for you in 2023 during the last primaries.

State of emergency won’t stop galamsey – Sukparu backs GWL MD

0

Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has backed the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, in rejecting calls for the declaration of a state of emergency to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, October 20, Mr. Mutawakilu argued that declaring a state of emergency would not provide a lasting solution to the menace, which continues to threaten the country’s environment and water resources. He instead called for more sustainable and pragmatic measures to address the problem.

Reacting to the remarks on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, October 21, Mr. Sukparu said the Mahama-led government had demonstrated a strong commitment to combating illegal mining, making a state of emergency unnecessary.

“So far, how this government has handled this issue [galamsey], I think that there’s no need for us to declare a state of emergency on the issue of galamsey. Because you have seen that the President has shown commitment to fighting this galamsey, and so far, we’re seeing results,” he said.

Mr. Sukparu noted that before President Mahama assumed office, many forest reserves had been overtaken by illegal miners.

However, he said recent reports indicate that government interventions have reclaimed several of those areas.

“Before he [President John Dramani Mahama] took office, we were told that several forest reserves were taken over by illegal miners.

“Per the current report we have, the government has taken over these forests. Several other initiatives have been put in place, including cancellation of some licences,” he said.

President Mahama appoints Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah as Special Envoy for Reparations

Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah is the new Special Envoy for Reparations Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah is the new Special Envoy for Reparations

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah as Special Envoy for Reparations.

His appointment is part of Ghana’s renewed commitment to advancing the global call for reparations for slavery and colonial exploitation.

The appointment, which was announced this week, places Dr Spio-Garbrah at the forefront of Ghana’s advocacy efforts within Africa and the diaspora to mobilise support, build partnerships, and shape policy frameworks that address historical injustices suffered by Africans and people of African descent.

Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah brings to the role a wealth of experience in international diplomacy, governance, and development.

He previously served as Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Minister of Education, and Ambassador to the United States and Mexico.

He also held a senior position at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) in London and worked with the African Development Bank (AfDB), where he contributed to strategic initiatives aimed at promoting African economic growth and integration.

During his tenure as Trade and Industry Minister, Dr Spio-Garbrah was instrumental in promoting industrialisation, supporting small and medium enterprises, and facilitating trade agreements that expanded Ghana’s export base.

His leadership in education reforms also contributed to strengthening tertiary education governance and expanding access.

As Special Envoy for Reparations, Dr Spio-Garbrah is expected to leverage his extensive international network and diplomatic expertise to coordinate with African governments, the African Union (AU), CARICOM, and global advocacy groups to advance Africa’s case for reparations.

The reparations agenda has gained renewed global attention in recent years, with several African leaders calling for restitution and reparative justice for centuries of exploitation under slavery and colonial rule.

President Mahama, who has been an outspoken advocate for Pan-African solidarity, described the appointment as a strategic step towards ensuring Ghana remains a leading voice in the global movement for reparative justice.

“Dr Spio-Garbrah’s wealth of experience in international relations and his longstanding commitment to Africa’s development make him well-suited to lead Ghana’s contribution to this crucial global conversation,” Mr Mahama stated.

DKB clashes with Cadman Atta Mills over Mahama’s handling of galamsey

0

(L) Dr Cadman Atta Mils and DKB (R) (L) Dr Cadman Atta Mils and DKB (R)

Ghanaian comedian Derrick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB, and Dr. Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, have engaged in a heated exchange on X over President John Dramani Mahama’s approach to illegal mining (galamsey).

The debate began after Dr. Cadman Atta Mills commented under a story posted by GhanaWeb on X on October 19, 2025.

The story indicated that the running mate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for the 2024 presidential election, Wayoe Ghanamannti, had announced that he had filed a petition for Parliament to start an impeachment procedure against President John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, President Mahama must be removed from office because he has failed in the fight against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Cadman, an economist and presidential advisor, in reaction to the story described the fight against galamsey as Mahama’s “weakest point” in his administration so far.

“The fight against galamsey is his weakest point. There is no doubt that small-scale mining (without environmental safeguards) has increased dramatically during the first 10 months of his administration,” he wrote.

However, DKB, a staunch supporter of the President, quickly disagreed with that assertion, arguing that Mahama should not be blamed for the current state of illegal mining.

“Current galamsey decadence was never J.M.’s doing, he is only being diplomatic addressing it. Saying it’s his weakest point is synonymous with shifting blame to him. He wasn’t the one who approved the L.I. that allowed mining in forest reserves or signed 2,151 mining licenses,” he defended.

Dr. Atta Mills later replied, clarifying that his comment was not meant to assign blame but to highlight his underperformance in solving the issue of galamsey as compared to other issues in the country.

“I don’t know how you can possibly come to the conclusion that ‘weakest point’ is equivalent to shifting blame. In my (and everyone’s) books, ‘weakest point’ means he has performed much better in other areas (economy, governance, foreign policy, etc.) than on mining,” he replied.

Unmoved, DKB maintained his stance, insisting that the blame lies solely on the previous government, adding that President Mahama deserved “applause and not criticism.”

“If you followed the galamsey issue well you would have realized it has spiralled into an uncontrollable hurricane of damage and security degeneracy. He didn’t contribute to this level of damage but the previous precarious government. He deserves applause & not WEAKEST POINT.,” he wrote.

The online exchange quickly drew attention from users, with many weighing in on whether Dr. Atta Mills’ remarks were fair or overly critical of the former president.

Trump government sued over $100,000 fee for skilled worker visas

0

US President, Donald Trump US President, Donald Trump

The US Chamber of Commerce has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s new $100,000 (£74,000) fee on H-1B visas for skilled foreign workers.

The fee “will make it cost-prohibitive” for US employers to use the programme, said Neil Bradley, Chief Policy Officer at the pro-business group.

Trump signed an executive order last month instituting the fee, arguing the visa programme has been abused. Critics have said it undercuts the American workforce. It is used heavily by the US tech sector, both by major companies and small startups.

The White House responded to the suit by calling the fee lawful and a “necessary, initial, incremental step towards necessary reforms” to the programme.

Mr Trump’s order only applies to new visa requests in the programme and vows to restrict entry unless a payment was made.

The move drew the ire of tech executives, including billionaire Elon Musk, who have argued that the H-1B programme enables the US to attract top talent from around the world.

Mr Musk, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, and Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google-parent Alphabet, are among the executives who began their careers in the US on H-1B visas.

Mr Trump also set up a new “gold card” to fast-track visas for certain immigrants in exchange for fees starting at £1m.

The Chamber of Commerce argued in its complaint Tuesday that if implemented, “the fee would inflict significant harm on American businesses,” forcing them to either dramatically increase their labor costs or hire fewer highly skilled employees.”

But in a press release, the Chamber which represents more than 3 million businesses, also praised Mr Trump for an agenda of “securing permanent pro-growth tax reforms, unleashing American energy, and unraveling the overregulation that has stifled growth.”

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick argued in support of Trump’s order and said “all of the big companies” were on board with the fee.

“The company needs to decide… is the person valuable enough to have a $100,000-a-year payment to the government, or they should head home, and they should go hire an American,” Lutnick has said.

Many H1-B visas holders come to the United States from India and China.

Tech companies argue that workers brought into the US cannot readily be replaced by American workers.

But White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said the administration’s action on H-1B visas discourages companies from “driving down American wages.”

Diana Asamoah Blames Daddy Lumba Over Funeral Confusion

0

Diana Asamoah

Gospel singer and Evangelist, Diana Asamoah, has blamed the late Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, for the chaos surrounding the burial rites, saying the late musician is responsible for the confusion tearing his home apart after his death.

Speaking on UTV’s United on October 18, 2025, Diana claimed that Lumba’s own actions and “unspoken truths” misled his longtime partner, Priscilla Ofori Atta, popularly known as Odo Broni, into believing he was no longer married to his wife, Akosua Serwaa.

“Everything that’s happening is Lumba’s fault. From what I understand, the things he might have told Odo Broni made her believe he was no longer with Akosua Serwaa,” she said.

Diana added that such situations are common, especially among men who live abroad. According to her, many deceive women into thinking they are single or divorced when their wives are actually living overseas.

“I know many men abroad who do the same. They tell young women they’ve left their wives when that’s not true. Some even ask their wives to play along so they can get money from the women and bring it home,” she explained.

Meanwhile, a suit is at the Kumasi High Court between Akosua Serwaa, Daddy Lumba’s first wife, and the family of Lumba.

Akosua Serwaa has filed an injunction seeking to be recognised as the lawful spouse with the right to perform the late musician’s widowhood rites.

Cabinet approves establishment of first Marine Protected Area in Ghana

0

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has announced Cabinet’s approval for the establishment of Ghana’s first Marine Protected Area within the Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region.

Speaking during a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, October 21, Mrs Arthur described the approval as a historic breakthrough in Ghana’s quest to restore marine ecosystems, rebuild declining fish stocks, and safeguard the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The Minister stressed that the initiative does not seek to ban fishing entirely, but rather to promote sustainable fishing practices that balance conservation with community livelihoods.

“The approval by the Cabinet of Ghana’s first Marine Protected Area marks a major step toward building a sustainable blue economy, which aims to protect marine life and fishing communities in diverse ways. Collaboration among various stakeholders and the government is necessary for the effective implementation of this initiative,” she said

She added that the Marine Protected Area forms part of Ghana’s Blue Economy Strategy and supports global commitments under the UN Convention on Biodiversity and Sustainable Development Goal 14.

Covering about 700 square kilometres, the designated area serves as a vital breeding and nursery ground for sardinella and other fish species, as well as a migratory route for whales, dolphins, and nesting turtles.

The Ministry will soon begin mapping, public sensitisation, and enforcement planning toward full implementation of the project.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr Samuel Basintale Amadu, has visited AICO II Daniel Kofi Oppong at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving treatment after surviving a violent assault at the Gbintri checkpoint in the North East Region.

The attack claimed the life of AICO II Rafiq Mohammed, who was on duty with AICO II Oppong at the time.

Expressing deep sorrow during the visit, Mr Amadu condemned the assault, describing it as a “cowardly act” that would not weaken the Service’s resolve to protect Ghana’s borders and combat transnational crime.

“This cowardly attack will not deter us,” he stated firmly. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders. Our officers will continue to receive the necessary protective equipment and logistical support to execute their duties effectively,” he said.

He also appealed to the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

The visit formed part of Mr Amadu’s tour of the North East Region, which seeks to assess operational preparedness and boost the morale of frontline officers.

He was accompanied by DCOI Maud Anima Quainoo, Head of the Public Affairs Department, Northern Regional Commander; DCOI Thomas Adjei; Chief Staff Officer, ACOI Gorden Saah; and other senior officers.

The Immigration Service has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with other security agencies to ensure that justice is served.

The Slamm Foundation, in partnership with the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) and the National Youth Authority (NYA), has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the country’s digital transformation by equipping young people with essential skills in cybersecurity and Information Technology (IT).

The week-long Cybersecurity and IT Training Programme, held in Kumasi, brought together over 120 young participants and offered practical instruction in cybersecurity monitoring and policy, basic networking, IT audit, digital forensics, and investigative tools.

Chief Executive Officer of Slamm Foundation, Dr. Samuel Boateng, said the initiative forms part of the foundation’s long-term vision to empower African youth with technology-driven skills that are relevant to the global digital economy.

“I have acquired cybersecurity and IT knowledge over the past 25 years, and I believe there’s no better way to give back than to share that knowledge. The world is changing, and Africa—especially Ghana—must be part of this digital revolution. My wife and I founded Slamm Technology in 2007, and for the past five years, we have trained more than 200,000 young people. Our goal is to train one million within the next ten years,” Dr. Boateng said.

He explained that the training aligns with the global Cybersecurity Awareness Month and aims to help the youth develop the digital competencies needed to create jobs, start technology-driven enterprises, and contribute to national development. “We are targeting the youth so they can build their technology ideas and create employment opportunities. That’s how we build a stronger digital Ghana,” Dr. Boateng added.

Founder of Slamm Foundation, Francisca Boateng, for her part, expressed commitment to providing further support to the participants. She further encouraged the participants to start applying the knowledge gained in their various communities.

“I wish to congratulate the participants and want to encourage them to make the most of what they have learned here this week. We are ready and available to support them all the way through internships and job opportunities.

Representing the Ashanti Regional Minister, Deputy Director of Administration at the ARCC, Samuel Twum, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.

“This training has come at a time when technology and innovation, along with related cybersecurity challenges, are on the rise. It covered key cybersecurity concepts, practical demonstrations, and hands-on exercises that have enhanced participants’ skills. These employable IT skills will enable them to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s digital transformation,” he said.

Mr. Twum, expressed appreciation to the Slamm Foundation and its partners for their continuous investment in Ghanaian youth, emphasising that the ARCC remains committed to working with such organisations to strengthen the nation’s digital future.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA), George Owel Amponsah, also praised the programme’s success, highlighting its role in promoting digital literacy and responsible online behaviour among young people.

“This training has empowered our young people with the knowledge and skills to thrive in the digital age. We are especially grateful to Slamm Foundation, Slamm Technology, ISC2, ARCC, and the Regional Minister for their unwavering support. Today marks the beginning of a new journey—turning dreams into innovations and businesses. We encourage participants to start modestly through voluntary service, internships, and mentorship,” he said.

Ghana must stop outsourcing its economic vision to IMF, World Bank

Professor Ernest Aryeetey is former VC of UG Professor Ernest Aryeetey is former VC of UG

A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Emeritus Professor Ernest Aryeetey, has criticised successive governments for failing to take full ownership of the country’s economic reform agenda.

He argued that Ghana’s economic direction has, for too long, been shaped by the World Bank, the IMF, and external consultants, often at the expense of home-grown expertise and clearly defined national priorities.

“In a way, when we went to the Washington Group to seek support for what we were doing, we didn’t always go to them with a clear plan of what we wanted. We often want to say something like we want to do something about agriculture, and they would say, ‘Okay, fine, we’ll send you some experts to come and help you,’” Professor Aryeetey said, as quoted by citinewsroom.com

Fiscal discipline must hold beyond 2026 – IMF cautions

His remarks revive a long-standing debate about whether Ghana’s repeated dependence on Bretton Woods institutions has truly advanced its economic independence or simply deepened its reliance on external direction.

According to him, these experts, usually from diverse international backgrounds, naturally promote solutions that work in their own countries, which do not always align with Ghana’s unique realities.

“These experts are coming from different countries; they are going to sell to you what they do in their own countries. And this is because we have not invested enough in the capacity of people who could tell the government how to transform our sectors,” he explained.

Professor Aryeetey emphasised that true transformation will only come when Ghana develops and trusts its own technical expertise to design and execute reform strategies tailored to its context.

“You don’t let a World Bank consultant come and tell you what you need to do. You should be telling him or her, ‘This is what I want to do, can you help me structure it?’ Not ask them what you should do,” he cautioned.

However, the data also showed that job vacancies rose 3.6% month-on-month However, the data also showed that job vacancies rose 3.6% month-on-month

Ghana’s labour market showed mixed signals in August 2025, with fewer job adverts recorded compared to a year earlier, according to new data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The number of job postings captured from selected print and online media, a key indicator of labour demand, fell to 2,799 in August 2025, down from 3,123 in the same month of 2024.

This represents a 10.4% year-on-year decline, highlighting a slowdown in new hiring opportunities across the economy.

However, the data also showed that job vacancies rose 3.6% month-on-month, up from 2,703 adverts in July 2025.

Cumulatively, between January and August 2025, the total number of advertised jobs stood at 24,106, only slightly below the 24,428 recorded over the same period last year, indicating relative stability in overall labour demand so far this year.

In a more encouraging sign, the number of private sector contributors to SSNIT, which serves as a partial measure of formal employment levels, increased by 3.5% to 1,089,965 in July 2025, up from 1,053,235 in July 2024.

On a month-to-month basis, SSNIT contributions remained almost unchanged, moving only slightly from 1,088,458 contributors in June 2025, suggesting that employment in the formal private sector has held steady despite fluctuations in job postings.

Shatta Wale is more popular than the president

Apostle Emmanuel Nkum (L) praises Shatta Wale's influence Apostle Emmanuel Nkum (L) praises Shatta Wale’s influence

Following the massive turnout at Shatta Wale’s concert dubbed, ShattaFest, General Overseer of The Radiant Place (TRP) Chapel, Apostle Emmanuel Nkum, has declared that the Dancehall artiste is more popular than the President of Ghana.

Speaking to his congregation after the event, Apostle Nkum said he drew this conclusion after witnessing the overwhelming crowd that filled Black Star Square during Shatta Wale’s birthday celebration.

He noted that the massive number of attendees, despite minimal publicity from Shatta Wale’s team, was a clear indication of the artiste’s immense influence.

ShattaFest: Not even Nkrumah’s Independence Day crowd could match this – Sonnie Badu

“I just realised that the President of Ghana is not as popular as Shatta Wale. For me, I was in Patapeezy, and I just shifted last night and joined SM because I said, ‘This is crazy. Me and Patapeezy, we both need help.’ The reason I’m making such a statement is because one person has fought all the media in Ghana, yet he is one of the most popular human beings, no billboard, no TV announcement, just social media and text messages. And I believe that more than 20,000 to 30,000 people are out there for just one young man’s birthday,” Apostle Emmanuel Nkum said.

On October 18, 2025, tens of thousands of fans trooped to the Black Star Square for the ShattaFest 2025, which doubled as a celebration of Shatta Wale’s 40th birthday.

The concert, which was free to attend, saw an unprecedented turnout that filled not only the entire square but also the surrounding streets.

The concert featured a lineup of artistes, including Sarkodie, Samini, Wendy Shay, Medikal, Kelvynboy, Amerado, DarkoVibes, Tinny, JZyNo, Kwame Yogot, and DopeNation, among several others.

The concert, which lasted through the night, ended around 7:05 a.m. on October 19, 2025.

A 29-year-old man, identified only as Kofi, is battling for his life after he was allegedly stabbed by his wife during a domestic dispute over a meal at Maamaso, near New Abirem in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 20, 2025, when an argument broke out between Kofi and his 21-year-old wife, Maafua, over a change in their planned dinner.

According to adomonline.com report on October 21, 2025, Kofi had given his wife money to prepare banku with okro stew, however, Maafua opted to cook light soup instead, explaining that the money provided was not enough for okro stew and that she had saved part of it for later.

“The money was not enough for okro stew, and I saved part to be used later,” the report said.

Maafua said her husband became angry after realising the meal had been changed, leading to a heated confrontation.

The situation escalated into a scuffle, during which Kofi allegedly picked up a knife.

Maafua reportedly overpowered him, seized the weapon, and stabbed him.

An eyewitness, identified as Atta Mallam, said that Maafua appeared to have acted intentionally.

Kofi’s brother, Francis, who was in another room, said he rushed in upon hearing the noise and went to the scene to find his brother bleeding profusely.

US and Australia sign deal to counter China’s dominance

0

The US and Australia have signed a deal intended to boost supplies of rare earths The US and Australia have signed a deal intended to boost supplies of rare earths

The US and Australia have signed a deal intended to boost supplies of rare earths and other critical minerals, as the Trump administration looks for ways to counter China’s dominance of the market.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the deal would support a pipeline of $8.5bn (A$13bn; £6.3bn) “ready-to-go” projects that would expand his country’s mining and processing abilities.

It includes $1bn to be invested by the two countries in projects in the US and Australia over the next six months, a framework text says.

The US and Australia have been working on these issues since Trump’s first term, but Albanese said the latest agreement would take the partnership to the “next level”.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump also commented on Australia’s multi-billion dollar submarine deal with the US and UK, known as Aukus, saying it was “full steam ahead”.

Earlier this year, the deal came under the spotlight after the Trump administration said it would review the details to ensure it fit with its “America First” agenda, raising concerns Australia may not be able to buy US submarines to replace its ageing fleet.

Asked if Australia would be getting the submarines, Trump said: “Oh no, they’re getting them”.

China currently controls about 70% of rare earths mining and 90% of the processing of the materials, which are found in everything from defence equipment to computer chips and cars.

US companies rely heavily on the materials, making them vulnerable this year as China has taken steps to restrict access to supplies in response to new US tariffs and other tensions.

The shares in Australia rare earths mining companies jumped on Tuesday after the announcement.

Perth-based firm Arafura Rare Earths surged by around 7.7%, while another major producer, Iluka Resources, gained by more than 3%.

Albanese said the agreement was aimed at speeding investment in three types of projects, including US investments in processing facilities in Australia.

The two countries also agreed to work together on issues such as pricing, permitting, and rules for government review of the sales of companies and projects in the sector.

The US separately said it would invest in the construction of a 100 tonnes-per-year advanced gallium refinery in Western Australia and was preparing to offer some $2.2bn in financing to advance critical minerals projects via its Export-Import Bank.

The Trump administration in recent months has already announced a series of investments in companies such as US rare earths miner MP Materials and Canada’s Trilogy Metals and Lithium America’s, which have projects in the US.

In exchange for the support, it has received ownership stakes in the firms.

Ahead of the meeting, shares in Australian companies such as Lynas Rare Earths had jumped on the prospect of increased support. Lynas was awarded a contract by the US Defense Department a few years ago and is working on a project in Texas.

The framework published by the White House was light on details, reflecting the delicate issues at play.

Australia is a major source of critical minerals but like the US, it relies on China, its biggest trade partner, for the processing required to turn the materials into something companies can use.

I want to play for the Black Stars to honour my father, not for the World Cup

0

Francis Amuzu plays for Gremio in Brazil Francis Amuzu plays for Gremio in Brazil

Gremio forward, Francis Amuzu has dismissed claims that his renewed desire to play for the Black Stars is driven by Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Francis Amuzu, his motivation to play for the Black Stars is far more personal and has nothing to do with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 26-year-old, who previously turned down a national team invitation in 2022, recently declared his readiness to wear the Ghana jersey, a decision that has stirred mixed reactions among fans and pundits.

Many believe Amuzu’s timing is no coincidence, coming just days after Ghana qualified for the next World Cup.

Francis Amuzu declares readiness to play for Ghana at the 2026 World Cup

But speaking to Asempa FM, the Belgium-born winger stressed that his choice stems from a deep sense of pride and a promise to his father that he will play for Ghana.

“To be honest, it is not for the World Cup. Two years ago, I made my Ghanaian passport. Now I’m reading news that because of the World Cup I want to come.

No, it is not because of that. It is also part of my decision to play, also because of my father,” Amuzu explained.

He further revealed that preparations for his switch to represent Ghana started long before the World Cup qualification was secured.

“My agent contacted someone in Ghana. They told me let’s make the passport ready and everything. I was like, no problem, I will do it for sure, so I did the passport and everything, and now I have my Ghanaian passport. I am proud of it because it can help me for many things, not only for the national team,” he added.

Amuzu’s connection to Ghana runs deep. His father, Theophilus Amuzu, is a former Hearts of Oak player who also represented Ghana at the U20 level.
