‘You can’t dodge that’ – Lyrical Joe on pressure to rap in Ghanaian local dialect

Lyrical Joe is a Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe is a Ghanaian rapper

Ghanaian rapper Joseph Gamor, popularly known as Lyrical Joe, has stated that artistes who rap in English often face pressure to include local languages, particularly Twi, in their music.

In an interview on 3Music TV, the “5th August” rapper shared his experience with this common expectation in the Ghanaian music industry.

When asked whether he feels pressured to include Ghanaian languages in his rap, Lyrical Joe responded by saying that it’s something that almost every artiste in Ghana faces.

According to him, there is no way to avoid that kind of pressure.

“Well, from the beginning, you can never dodge that thing in Ghana here,” he said.

He explained that right from the start of his career, many people advised him to rap in Twi or, at the very least, simplify his lyrics using pidgin English so more Ghanaians could relate to his music.

“From the beginning, I had many people push that on to me. People said to me ‘If you will not do the Twi, then you just break it down to pidgin. Let’s keep it pidgin and see because Ghanaians can cope with that,’” he shared.

Lyrical Joe further noted that he had his own goals and vision for his music. He emphasised that he has always had a clear idea of what he wants to achieve with his rap.

“I also had my mindset about what I was looking to achieve and everything,” he said.

The rapper went on to question why people often expect him to rap in Twi without considering where he was coming from. He pointed out that Ghana has many local languages, and forcing artistes to only use Twi is unfair.

“People ask me why I won’t speak Twi in my song, they don’t ask me where I am from, whether I am Asante or not. That’s not the only local language in Ghana, so if you are forcing me to go there, then there is a problem,” he added.

Joyce Bawah demands consistency in response to Bawumia’s concerns on Wontumi’s arrest

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, has responded to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s concerns over the arrest and detention of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a social media post on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, Joyce Bawah Mogtari emphasised the need for consistent application of justice and due process for all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation.

Dr Bawumia, earlier on Wednesday, issued a statement expressing deep concern over Wontumi’s arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), highlighting the vagueness of the charges and the unknown whereabouts of the detained NPP chairman.

Bawumia urged EOCO and relevant state institutions to adhere to the rule of law and respect Wontumi’s constitutional rights, warning that any deviation risks undermining public trust in Ghana’s justice system.

In her response, the president’s aide acknowledged Bawumia’s call for transparency and respect for Wontumi’s rights, stating that she, too, believes firmly in the rule of law, constitutionalism, and the fundamental rights of every Ghanaian.

However, she pointed out the irony in raising concerns about due process now, noting that over the past few years, many Ghanaians—including political opponents, civil society actors, and ordinary citizens—have faced similar challenges with state institutions acting without transparency or fairness.

“While I join the call for transparency in this matter and for Mr Wontumi’s rights to be respected, I urge consistency in the application of these standards,” Mogtari stated in her post.

She emphasised that justice must not be demanded selectively, only when it affects those within one’s political circle, but should be upheld for all Ghanaians, irrespective of party affiliations.

Mogtari called for the moment to serve as a turning point, advocating for a renewed commitment to uphold the dignity, rights, and liberties of every citizen.

“Let this moment serve as a turning point, not for selective outrage and justice, but for a renewed commitment to uphold the dignity, rights, and liberties of every citizen,” she wrote.

Wontumi was arrested and detained by EOCO on 27 May 2025, after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra.

The arrest followed a failed attempt to apprehend him on 23 May 2025, and came amid an intense interrogation by the police CID over allegations of illegal mining activities.

However, details behind his EOCO arrest remain scarce, even though his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has disclosed that it is related to Wontumi’s dealings with Exim Bank.

Appiah-Kubi also disclosed that Wontumi has been served a writ of summons by Exim Bank, adding to his legal challenges.

Wontumi reportedly took ill after undergoing intense interrogation at EOCO on Tuesday, leading to his hospitalisation.

According to reports, Wontumi was granted bail in the sum of GHC50 million by EOCO on Wednesday but failed to meet the bail conditions, warranting his continued stay in EOCO custody.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Legacy Rise Sport Promotion, Sharaf Mahama, and Kofi Sam Atta Mills, son of late President John Evans Atta Mills, attended the Black Stars’ game against Nigeria in the Unity Cup on May 28, 2025.

Sharaf stood still with his hands in his pockets, while Kofi Atta Mills was engaged in a serious conversation with other people around them.

President John Dramani Mahama’s son’s calm gesture and demeanor appeared to imply that he was unimpressed with the result the Black Stars produced against their fierce West African rivals.

The CEO of Legacy Rise Promotions has been spotted in stadiums supporting the national team on several occasions, as well as at boxing events.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Black Stars in the semi-finals of the 2025 Unity Cup at the GTech Community Stadium on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, advancing to the tournament final.

The highly anticipated “Jollof Derby” saw Nigeria take the lead through Cyriel Dessers in the first half, followed by an own goal conceded by Ghana’s Razak Simpson, putting the Super Eagles 2-0 up at halftime.

Ghana fought back in the second half, with a goal from Brandon Thomas-Asante in the 70th minute, but Nigeria’s defense, led by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, held firm despite late pressure.

This result marks Ghana’s first defeat to Nigeria since 2006, ending a 19-year unbeaten streak against the Super Eagles.

The Black Stars will now face Trinidad and Tobago in the third-place playoff, while Nigeria advances to meet Jamaica in the final on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the same venue.

Bryan Acheampong Exploratory Committee Set Up

0

Dr. Bryan Acheampong

Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi and former Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has formally announced the formation of an Exploratory Committee to assess the possibility of a bid for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership.

The committee has been tasked to engage key stakeholders, especially at the grassroots, and test the alignment between his vision and the aspirations of party members and the Ghanaian public.

“The NPP finds itself at a pivotal juncture that calls not only for unity but also for a renewed commitment to our core values,” he stated and added, “I have served the NPP faithfully, supported many, and helped shape impactful policies. Everything within me and every resource at my disposal have been put to the service of the party.”

In his public statement copied to the Daily Guide Network, the committee will deliver its findings within four weeks.

Over the last two decades, Dr. Acheampong has quietly become one of the most dependable and effective hands within the NPP. A man whose trajectory reflects not just ambition, but intentional preparation for national leadership.

From his early days as a grassroots organiser and party staffer, he has steadily climbed through the ranks. His election to Parliament and subsequent appointments as Minister of State at the Ministry of National Security, and Minister of Food and Agriculture, coupled with his influential role on numerous parliamentary and party committees, have all reinforced his image as a man driven by a deep sense of duty.

His tenure at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture was a prime example of his ability to take charge of complex portfolios. He introduced forward-looking strategies to improve food production, tackle inflation in food prices, and support farmer resilience — key concerns in a post-COVID, high-cost-of-living era.

Beyond government, Dr. Acheampong is also known for his entrepreneurial success, most notably as the force behind the Rock City Hotel project in Kwahu, a venture that has redefined the standards of tourism infrastructure in Ghana. It stands as both a job creation engine and a tangible example of his “doer, not talker” philosophy.

His supporters often describe him as a rare blend of political pedigree, business acumen, and grassroots sensibility. He is also recognised for his loyalty to the NPP cause, having financially supported the party’s operations during lean times and mentored emerging political talents behind the scenes.

What makes Dr. Acheampong’s current posture especially timely is his neutrality in the ongoing factionalism within the NPP. In a political atmosphere increasingly characterised by personal camps and rivalry, he has remained largely above the fray, a trait that party elders say will be crucial in mending internal cracks ahead of 2028.

“I believe in the Party’s capacity to overcome its challenges and once again lead Ghana towards a brighter future,” he said. “Let us remain steadfast in spirit and decorous in conduct in the pursuit of progress, inclusivity, and effective leadership for Ghana.”

While the nation awaits the findings of the Exploratory Committee, one thing is clear: Bryan Acheampong is not entering the race for relevance — he has been relevant all along. His announcement is simply the natural progression of a life already devoted to public service and party building.

As the NPP considers its future leadership, voters and delegates alike will have to weigh experience, loyalty, and delivery. In Dr. Acheampong, many see a candidate who embodies all three — not only serious about service, but seasoned by it.

Complaints Cloud Hajj 2025 –

0

Pilgrims at the Hajj village

Complaints about poor management of Hajj 2025 by pilgrims have marred this year’s operations.

One hundred and forty-five (145) paid-up prospective pilgrims could not make it to Saudi Arabia yesterday when the aircraft took off with the last batch of pilgrims of two hundred and eighty (280) instead of four hundred and twenty-five (425).

One hundred and sixty (160) visas were cancelled due to reapplication and consistent cancellations from the visa application system.

What this means is that 160 paid-up and protocol prospective pilgrims are currently in possession of visas which have been cancelled in the visa application system.

Some staff of the Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana, especially in the IT Department, cannot go because their visas have been cancelled to pave way for protocol pilgrims.

The Head of Communications of the Hajj Taskforce has rendered an apology to stakeholders over the poor performance, with a promise that it won’t happen again.

Mounting complaints have ranged from poor accommodation to unsatisfactory feeding arrangements in Saudi Arabia.

Social media has been abuzz with such complaints, especially from pilgrims who had landed in Madina and Mecca.

One of the pilgrims said they had been accommodated in an abandoned hospital, claim which cannot be substantiated though.

Being an arid country, Saudi Arabia experiences extreme weather conditions such as excessive heat and cold.

Some pilgrims have complained about lack of air-conditioners in their hotel rooms.

There have also been complaints about hotels too far apart, thus denying pilgrims the opportunity of meeting their family members.

An entry on the taskforce’s Facebook page about insufficient medical drugs was quickly deleted.

This year’s poor management of the Hajj was on the floor of Parliament last Tuesday when the First Minority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu dealt with the subject.

According to him, although there was a reduction in the cost of the Hajj package, this did not manifest in the quality of services rendered pilgrims.

He told the House how pilgrims had taken to social media to complain about their plights.

The expression of apology by the Head of Communications of the Hajj Taskforce, A.B.A. Fuseini, according to him, was an admission of failure on the part of the taskforce. This, he added, was a systematic failure.

He slammed the mass exit of the previous management of the Hajj, saying this has denied the taskforce of the necessary institutional memory needed to serve as an impetus for its operations.

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, did not agree with his colleague, saying that the Head of the Hajj    Taskforce, Collins Dauda, should be commended for a job well done. The President too should be commended for reducing the Hajj fare, he added.

Another evidence of this year’s Hajj operations, he said, was the fact that refunds were going to be made to paid-up pilgrims who could not obtain their travel visas.

Over two hundred (200) paid-up prospective pilgrims will not be able to make the trip this year.

One of the challenges of this year’s Hajj has to do with visa acquisition. It has been alleged that in order to satisfy the many protocol ticket beneficiaries, visa swapping took place.

It has also been alleged by some pilgrims in Saudi Arabia that they were embarrassed by party foot soldiers, as they communicated with those at home about their plight in Saudi Arabia.

Hajia Halima Akompa, while on Baina TV, said members of the taskforce should be replaced by Alhaji Tanko Abdul Rauf, one time head of Hajj operations under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

A power outage disrupted activities during the pre-departure formalities yesterday, reported a certain Hajia Amina, who was in the queue at the Hajj Village. “We are yet to receive our boarding passes but because of the power outage we are still stuck here. The place is very hot. We have gone through all the procedures except the issuance of boarding passes.”

A certain Sadiya of Libyan Quarters, Madina, Accra, reacted on social media thus: “I am an NDC faithful and live at Libya Quarters. I have not received any appointment yet I serve the party. President John Mahama, you know I love you. Please dissolve the taskforce and bring back Alhaji Tanko Rauf. The taskforce has failed ‘kportor’. The missing protocol tickets is awful. I know a lot about the development. The greed is too much and it is the reason governments fail. We campaigned for the party, we would not allow anybody to spoil our administration. We would not tolerate people who would create a situation where Ghanaians would start complaining about such selfish interests of individuals.”

A certain Hajia Memuna from Wa told DAILY GUIDE that “I was told to go to Tamale for my flight, but that was not to be. I came to Accra as I was told, but here too my place has been swapped for a protocol ticket holder. This is not fair. I left my base for the past two weeks and here in Accra I have been sleeping in the Hajj Village mosque. My passport has not been located yet. When I get it I would return to Wa. I have been told that my refund would be given after the return of the team from this year’s Hajj. I am disappointed in this government.”

National Security personnel and other security agencies were deployed to the Hajj Village due to the rising tension occasioned by the inability of paid-up persons to be airlifted. Some persons spotted recording the happenings at the Village had their mobile devices seized and their contents deleted.

Ghana/Nigeria: Unity Cup – Nigeria’s Super Eagles Overcome Ghana, to Face Jamaica in Final

0

Goals from Cyriel Dessers and an own goal by Ghana’s Razak Simpson secured the win, earning Nigeria a place in Saturday’s final against Jamaica.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles triumphed over fierce rivals Ghana with a 2-1 victory in a pulsating Unity Cup semi-final clash at the Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday night.

Goals from Cyriel Dessers and an own goal by Ghana’s Razak Simpson secured the win, earning Nigeria a place in Saturday’s final against Jamaica.

The match, dubbed the “Jollof Derby,” was anything but friendly, as the historic rivalry between the two West African giants reignited in front of a packed, energetic crowd of diaspora fans in West London.

Early goals set the tone

Cyriel Dessers gave Nigeria a dream start in the 14th minute, expertly chesting down a cross before rifling a low shot past Ghanaian goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim.

It marked his second goal against the Black Stars, having also scored in a 2024 friendly between the two nations.

Five minutes later, Nigeria doubled their advantage in fortuitous fashion. A dangerous free kick into the box saw Ghanaian defender Razak Simpson misjudge his header and divert the ball into his own net, handing the Super Eagles a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Ghana’s fightback stalled

Struggling to find rhythm in the first half, Ghana’s response after the break was more purposeful. Their efforts paid off in the 70th minute when Brandon Thomas-Asante coolly finished off a low cross to bring the Black Stars back into the game.
