The constitutional crisis triggered by the September 1, 2025, removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has escalated into an unprecedented high-stakes standoff between the executive and the judiciary. This confrontation centers on the constitutional finality of the removal process versus the fundamental principles of judicial independence, currently paralyzing the formal administrative succession of the country’s apex court.

Bantama becomes last standing 31st December Day Care centre in Kumasi

The 31st December Day Care Centre at Bantama The 31st December Day Care Centre at Bantama

Only one of the five 31st December Day Care Centres established in Kumasi under the 31st December Women’s Movement remains operational, marking the quiet decline of an initiative once hailed for empowering women and advancing early childhood education.

The centres were founded under the leadership of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, to support working mothers and promote girl-child education.

In the 1980s and 1990s, they stood as symbols of progress, providing a safe and nurturing environment where mothers could work with peace of mind, knowing their children were cared for.

31st December Movement congratulates women

According to a report by adomonline.com on October 24, 2025, decades later, that vision has largely faded. Four of the centres located at Ash Town, Adum, Asawase, and Sawaba have collapsed.

Some of their buildings have been converted into homes, while others have completely disappeared, overtaken by time and neglect.

At Ash Town, where one of the centres once operated, the scene today tells a story of decline. The headmistress of the nearby Ash M/A Kindergarten, Charity Agyeman Duah, said poor sanitation in the area drove parents away.

“It’s no more functioning, so most parents brought their wards here. I personally wouldn’t take my ward to where there is a refuse dump, so I’ve written letters to stakeholders to assist. I wish they can be able to do something about it,” she said.

At Bantama, the only surviving centre continues to function and now runs classes up to Junior High School Three (JHS 3).

Teachers there, though declining to speak on camera, expressed pride in preserving the founder’s legacy, even as they struggle with limited resources and minimal external support.

Nana Konadu loses case against aggrieved 31st December colleagues

The Bantama centre’s endurance stands as more than an administrative success, it is a living tribute to the 31st December Women’s Movement and its vision for women’s empowerment and children’s education.

Where laughter once echoed across five communities, only one still rings today.

A single question sparked a powerful vision to open the world of science and technology to young Africans. That vision gave birth to the African Centre for Nuclear Education & Training (ACNET), an initiative dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation to explore the boundless opportunities within nuclear science.

In partnership with Passion Bearers Worldwide, founded by Pastor John Bosco Brempong, ACNET launched its first outreach program on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the Ghana Police Model Basic School in Accra.

The event reached over 260 students, introducing them to the wonders of nuclear science through interactive learning, lively discussions, and engaging demonstrations.

The session began with a question: “How many of you have heard of Nuclear Science?” To everyone’s surprise, very few hands were raised. Yet, after just a few hours of engaging exploration and discovery, the question was asked again at the end of the session, and every student’s hand went up, a powerful symbol of curiosity awakened and potential unlocked.

“This was more than just an educational session,” said Innocent Y. Tsorxe, founder of ACNET. “It was a transformation. Students left not only informed but inspired to dream bigger and

see themselves as part of Africa’s scientific future.”

During the program, Pastor John Bosco Brempong encouraged the students to take their learning seriously and to live their lives with purity and purpose, reminding them that education is not just about knowledge but about shaping character and making meaningful contributions to society.

ACNET’s founder, Innocent Y. Tsorxe, also shared his personal journey. He initially pursued General Art in high school to steer away from science. However, his introduction to college-

Level science courses rekindled his passion, ultimately leading him to become a scientist.

He emphasised to the students that any dream can be achieved through hard work and commitment, inspiring them to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, especially encouraging our young girls.

The collaboration with Passion Bearers Worldwide, an organisation with over 11 years of experience in youth-focused educational initiatives, brought energy and expertise to the programme’s success.

ACNET expressed heartfelt appreciation to Madam Florence, the headmistress of the school and teachers at Ghana Police Model Basic School for their warm support and partnership in making this initiative impactful for the young boys and girls.

Six Arrested in Police Operation against Human Trafficking

0

Sofia, Oct. 25, GNA/BTA – Six people have been arrested for migrant trafficking through Bulgaria and Serbia to Western Europe, as part of a specialized police operation by the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC) and the General Directorate Border Police (GDBP), the Ministry of Interior announced Saturday. The operation took place on October 22 in Sofia, Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, and Montana.

One of the arrested suspected traffickers is believed to be in a high-ranking position in the hierarchy of international trafficking. Three of the suspects have been formally charged and placed in pre-trial detention, the Ministry added.

During the investigation, three properties and one vehicle were searched. Mobile phones, EUR 5,120, car rental agreements, vehicle registration documents, payment orders, and other items related to criminal activity were seized. Eleven witnesses have been interviewed. The investigation and police actions are supervised by a prosecutor from the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office. Work on the case is ongoing.

Border Police officers began working to uncover the criminal scheme at the beginning of 2025, the Interior Ministry noted. “For two consecutive years, we have achieved a 70% reduction in migrant pressure,” said Border Police Chief  Anton Zlatanov at the International Conference “Bulgaria in Schengen”, held here on Friday.

Brian Brobbey provides crucial assist to inspire Sunderland’s late win against Chelsea

Dutch-Ghanaian forward, Brian Brobbey came off the bench to deliver a crucial assist as Sunderland stunned Chelsea 2-1 in a dramatic Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Brobbey, who replaced Wilson Isidor in the 75th minute, made an instant impact.

With the score level deep into stoppage time, he showed composure beyond measure, holding off Chelsea’s defenders before slipping a perfect pass to Chemsdine Talbi.

The midfielder calmly curled the ball into the bottom corner, sending the away fans into wild celebration.

Chelsea had started strong, taking the lead in the fourth minute through Alejandro Garnacho after a clever pass from Pedro Neto.

Sunderland hit back in the 22nd minute when Isidor pounced on a loose ball inside the box to level the score.

Brobbey’s late brilliance completed Sunderland’s comeback, earning them a famous victory and moving them up to second on the league table.

The Black Cats now turn their attention to their next Premier League match against Everton on November 3.

Ivory Coast votes in key election that may extend leader Ouattara’s rule

0

Voters cast their ballots at a polling station in Agboville Voters cast their ballots at a polling station in Agboville

Voters in the Ivory Coast are casting ballots for president with incumbent Alassane Ouattara the overwhelming favourite as he runs for a fourth term.

Nearly nine million Ivorians will vote on Saturday from 8am to 6pm (08:00 to 18:00 GMT), choosing from a field of five contenders.

Opposition heavyweights, however, aren’t running for the post. Former President Laurent Gbagbo and former Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam have been barred from standing, the former for a criminal conviction and the latter for acquiring French citizenship.

Critics said the exclusion of key candidates has given Ouattara, 83, an unfair advantage and essentially cleared the way for his fourth term.

None of his four rivals represents an established party nor do they have the reach of the ruling Rally of Houphouetistes for Democracy and Peace (RHDP).

Agribusinessman and former Trade Minister Jean-Louis Billon, 60, hopes to rally backers from his former party, the Democratic Party, while former first lady Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, 76, is looking to garner votes from supporters of her ex-husband.

The left-wing vote hangs in the balance between Gbagbo and Ahoua Don Mello, a civil engineer and independent Pan-African with Russian sympathies. Henriette Lagou Adjoua, one of the first two women to run for the presidency during the 2015 election, is representing a centrist coalition, the Group of Political Partners for Peace.

At the Riviera Golf 1 Primary School in the Ivory Coast’s economic capital, Abidjan, where Gbagbo is expected to cast her vote, the atmosphere appeared calm as the first voters began to queue in the early hours of Saturday.

“This vote means a lot to us,” Konate Adama told Al Jazeera. “We need a candidate to emerge from these elections. It will lead us towards peace, wisdom and tranquillity.”

Turnout will be key as the opposition continues to call for a boycott. About 8.7 million people aged above 18 are eligible to vote in a country of 33 million with a median age of 18.3.

To win, a candidate must take an absolute majority of the votes. A second round will take place if no one clears that hurdle.

Controversial fourth term.

Results are expected early next week, and observers forecast Ouattara to win the more than 50 percent needed to secure victory in the first round.

The octogenarian has wielded power in the world’s top cocoa producer since 2011 when the country began reasserting itself as a West African economic powerhouse.

Under the constitution, presidents may serve a maximum of two terms. Ouattara argues a major constitutional change implemented in 2016 “reset” his limit.

The decision has angered his detractors. Opposition and civil society groups also complain of restrictions on Ouattara’s critics and a climate of fear.

About 44,000 security forces were deployed across the country to keep protests in check, especially in opposition strongholds in the south and west. A night-time curfew was in place on Friday and Saturday in the region where the political capital, Yamoussoukro, is located.

Authorities said they want to avoid “chaos” and a repeat of unrest surrounding the 2020 presidential election. According to official figures, 85 people died then while the opposition said there were more than 200 deaths.

Opposition parties have encouraged Ivorians to protest against Ouattara’s predicted fourth term. On Monday, an Independent Electoral Commission building was torched.

The government has responded by banning demonstrations, and the judiciary has sentenced several dozen people to three years in prison for disturbing the peace.

In 2010, the country was plunged into a conflict that killed at least 3,000 people after the presidential election between Gbagbo and Ouattara.

Irene Naa Torshie Addo mourns former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

The late Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings The late Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

Irene Naa Torshie Addo, an advocate for women and children’s right, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, following news of her passing.

In a statement on October 25, 2025, Naa Torshie Addo described Nana Konadu as “one of Ghana’s most courageous daughters and transformative leaders”, noting that her passing represents not only a personal loss to many but also a national tragedy.

“Her loss is not only personal to many of us who admired her strength, but also national, for Ghana has lost one of its most courageous daughters and transformative leaders,” she said.

Reflecting on the legacy of the late First Lady, Naa Torshie Addo highlighted the immense contributions Nana Konadu made through the 31st December Women’s Movement, an initiative that revolutionized women’s empowerment in Ghana.

Crying More than the Bereaved: Woman thrown out of Nana Konadu’s house for crying out loudly

She credited the movement with transforming “passion into policy” by creating opportunities for women and children across the country. Through initiatives that built schools, skills training centres and cooperatives, Nana Konadu gave practical meaning to empowerment and helped countless rural women achieve economic independence.

“She opened spaces for rural women to learn, work and lead. She made empowerment practical by building schools, skills centres, and cooperatives that gave women and children real choices and opportunities,” Naa Torshie Addo noted.

Naa Torshie Addo also spoke about the lessons she drew from Nana Konadu’s example, emphasising that leadership, as exemplified by the former First Lady, is earned through conviction, sacrifice and service not inherited.

“From her, I learnt that leadership demands courage the courage to stand for what is right, to speak when silence is convenient and to act when others hesitate,” she said.

She described the late Nana Konadu as “a phenomenon whose voice carried strength, clarity, and an unyielding belief in Ghana’s potential.”

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and played a prominent role in Ghanaian politics and social advocacy.

She was widely recognised for her leadership in championing women’s rights, community development, and economic empowerment across the country through her work with the 31st December Women’s Movement.

Nigeria replaces top security officials days after coup plot denial

0

Nigeria president, Bola Tinubu Nigeria president, Bola Tinubu

Nigeria’s president has replaced top security officials as the West African country grapples with unabated violence in the conflict-hit north and myriad security challenges.

Friday’s shake-up comes as the government has denied rumours of a coup plot in the wake of local media reports that more than a dozen military officers were arrested in September, including a brigadier general and a colonel.

“I have approved changes in the hierarchy of our armed forces to further strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture,” President Bola Tinubu said in a brief statement.

According to the presidential spokesperson, Tinubu fired three top security officials on Friday – Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff; Emmanuel Ogalla, chief of naval staff, and Hassan Abubakar, chief of air staff.

Tinubu appointed Olufemi Oluyede, the former chief of army staff, as the new chief of defence staff.

Shaibu, I Abbas and SK Aneke were appointed as the chiefs of army, air force, and naval staff.

The president tasked them with improving “the professionalism, vigilance and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” spokesperson Sunday Dare said in a statement.

While the military on Saturday denied that there was a coup plot, local media and some analysts are not convinced.

“Military leadership reshuffle is a very normal and regular procedure in Nigeria,” Confidence MacHarry, a security analyst at Lagos-based consultancy SBM Intelligence, told the AFP news agency.

At the same time, the “military has failed to convincingly deny” the alleged coup plot, he said.

“This shake-up could thus be a means of taking the wind out of the sails of coup plotters” who reportedly complained about career stagnation “or as a means of punishment for the military chiefs for their failure to improve security”, he added.

‘Prioritising’ protection

The changes also come as Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, was shaken by protests this week. Police fired tear gas and arrested dozens of demonstrators who took to the streets to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra separatist group that seeks independence for Nigeria’s southeastern region.

A wide spectrum of armed groups operate across the country.

In the north, Boko Haram, Nigeria’s homegrown armed group, this year mounted a major resurgence. The group took up arms in 2009 to fight Western education and impose its radical version of Islamic law.

Meanwhile, criminal groups specialising in kidnapping for ransom and looting – commonly referred to as bandits – are also dominant.

In recent months, armed group fighters have repeatedly overrun military outposts, mined roads with bombs and raided civilian communities, raising fears of a possible return to the peak insecurity of a decade ago.

Earlier this year, the US government approved the sale of $346m in arms to bolster Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and criminal groups.

Meanwhile, regionally in the past three years, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger each saw a military takeover – a trend that analysts warn could continue across West Africa.

“Some of us saw these changes coming,” said Senator Iroegbu, a security analyst based in Abuja told The Associated Press.

“This also means that in the current state of events, the administration [in Nigeria] might be prioritising regime protection above any other security threats.”

Rotary Club of Accra Ridge embarks on medical outreach in Kwahu

0

Over 700 residents from five communities in the Kwahu East and South municipalities have benefited from a free medical outreach exercise organised by the Rotary Club of Accra Ridge.

The two-day outreach saw residents of Kotoso, Zekorpe, Asempaneye, Tokrom, Hyewohoden, and parts of the Kwahu Ridge area receive healthcare services including malaria testing, diabetes screening, and treatment for hypertension, skin conditions, intestinal worms, and diarrhoea.

In addition to consultations and treatment, 255 residents were enrolled on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), securing access to basic healthcare beyond the outreach.

The Club President, Oppong Agyare Agyeman-Anane, explained that the medical outreach was a reminder that good health should not be a privilege but a right.

“With the support of our partners and sponsors, we will continue to extend healthcare to communities like Kotoso and ensure that Rotary’s presence is felt where it matters most,” he emphasised.

He said that, as captured in this year’s Rotary theme, the Club remained committed to “Uniting for Good — one community at a time,” adding that they were preparing for the fifth edition of the programme, with plans to expand its reach to more communities in the Eastern Region.

The lead physician for the exercise, Dr Alex Menka, observed that the outreach helped to bridge critical healthcare gaps for vulnerable families.

The Assemblyman for the area, James Dornu Tanihu, described the outreach as a welcome relief for households struggling under economic hardship.

A past President of the Rotary Club of Accra Ridge, Yaa Ohenewaa Nkrumah, expressed gratitude to the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and district health officers who had supported the programme over the years.

“Their dedication has been central to the success of this initiative,” she remarked.

The residents expressed appreciation for the outreach, with one beneficiary describing it as “a blessing” that provided both treatment and renewed hope after months without medical attention.

Senator Ned Nwoko reacts to viral video linking him with young woman, issues strong warning

Billionaire politician and husband of actress Regina Daniels, Prince Ned Nwoko, has broken his silence after a viral video surfaced online linking him with a young woman.

In a public statement shared on his Instagram page, Ned Nwoko clarified that the woman in question had visited him as part of a team under the Peace Ambassadors initiative led by Ambassador Dr. Adejo Sule — not for any personal reason.

He explained that photos were taken during the visit, as is usually the case whenever he receives guests, but some people have now twisted the moment for clout.

“It is unfortunate what social media has become — a space where moments are easily twisted for clout and misinformation,” he wrote.

Nwoko went on to describe the claims as “mischievous and malicious,” stating clearly that he has no personal or private connection with the woman being circulated online.

He further warned individuals and media platforms spreading the story to stop immediately, adding that the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 is still in force and will be used against anyone found guilty of spreading falsehood.

In his words:

“Let me state clearly and unequivocally that the news being propagated around her visit is entirely false. I do not have any form of personal or private connection with her.”

“Any further propagation of this false narrative will attract appropriate legal action.”

Catholic University of Ghana graduates over 1,000 students

0

By Dennis Peprah

Fiapre (Bono), Oct. 25, GNA -The Catholic University of Ghana (CUG) at the weekend graduated 1,606 students who had undergone postgraduates and undergraduate course at the institution.

They comprise 347 postgraduates and 1,260 undergraduates.

The institution also admitted 2,169 fresh students to pursue various degrees and diplomas course at the university.

Speaking at the 24th congregation and 36th matriculation ceremony at the university’s main campus at Fiapre in the Sunyani Municipality, Professor Matthew Glover Addo, the Vice-Chancellor of the CUG emphasised that education remained the cornerstone of national development.

He said at the critical juncture of the nation’s transformation, there was an urgent need to prioritize quality over mere quantity in education.

Prof Addo noted that the country made significant strides in access to education, hence the need to turn attention to improving educational standards and ensuring relevance, competence, and excellence in teaching and learning.

“We must also ensure that our graduates become agents of change in our rapidly changing world”, he stated, saying the role of private universities played in the development of the nation’s tertiary education could not be overemphasised.

Prof Addo therefore appealed to the government to continue to support private universities by making vital resources, like books, relevant software and transport facilities available to them as well.

He advised the graduates to use the knowledge they had acquired to serve and improve dignity of human life, promotion of justice for all, quality of personal and family life, the protection of nature, search for peace and political stability, and a new economic and political order.

“The degree you receive today is not just a paper, but a call to duty to serve your communities, to innovate, to lead with humility, and to be solution-oriented citizens”, he advised the graduates, saying, “Ghana and Africa are looking up to you to be the change-makers of our time.”

Prof Addo also urged the freshers to remain disciplined and make good use of their time at the university’s serene environment that fostered academic excellence.

“Both Academic and non-academic staff are available to assist you to have the most pleasant educational experience, so make use of the resources, mentors, and community around you”, he stated.

Prof Addo added that” “University life is not just about passing examinations, but also about discovering your purpose, developing a critical mind, honing your talents, and preparing to make meaningful contributions to society”.

In a speech read on his behalf, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, said the government perceived higher education as essential to the socio-economic upliftment nation.

He said the mandate of universities were not only to churn out skill graduates, but also engage community to foster inclusive growth.

Mr Iddrisu tasked the universities to endeavour to produce graduates who met the demand of contemporary labour with Artificial Intelligence and critical thinking adaptability and also imbibe students with the values of honesty and respect for human dignity.

The CUG was established in 2002 by the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference with the mandate to produce graduates who blend academic excellence with the requisite moral and spiritual values.

It emphasizes good ethical and moral grounding in its curriculum and prepares students to think critically and provide solutions to real-world challenges and also provide selfless service to their communities and countries.

Delegates in Bunkpurugu/Nakpanduri allege vote theft in 2023 NPP Primaries

0

Tensions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) escalated in the Bunkpurugu/Nakpanduri constituency as a group of nearly 30 delegates publicly confronted Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, accusing party officials of rigging the 2023 Presidential Primaries to favour Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The confrontation, which unfolded during Mr Agyapong’s ongoing campaign tour in the North East Region, centered on allegations that delegates’ support for him was systematically suppressed, resulting in a complete shutout for the former Assin Central MP despite substantial backing.

The incident occurred amid Mr Agyapong’s efforts to rally support ahead of the party’s upcoming Presidential Primaries elections, where he has been making appeals to northern delegates.

In the constituency, known for its strong ethnic ties to Dr Bawumia, a cluster of over two dozen delegates approached Mr Agyapong at a local gathering in the constituency capital, presenting what they described as tangible proof of their intended votes.

These included handwritten tally sheets, witness affidavits from polling stations, and mobile phone recordings capturing discrepancies between voter intentions and official results.

The delegates claimed that during the primaries held on November 4, 2023, they had mobilized at least 40 per cent of the local vote for Mr Agyapong, based on pre-poll surveys and door-to-door canvassing, yet the final tally recorded zero votes for him.

This revelation has reignited long-simmering grievances from the primaries, where Dr Bawumia secured a landslide victory with 61.47 per cent of the national vote, or 118,210 ballots, while Mr Agyapong finished second with 37.41 per cent, or 71,996 votes.

In the North East Region, Dr. Bawumia’s dominance was particularly pronounced, with the Bunkpurugu/Nakpanduri results reflecting a near-unanimous sweep that delegates now attribute to manipulation rather than genuine preference.

The constituency, part of a broader pattern in northern strongholds, contributed to Dr Bawumia’s overwhelming regional lead, but the zero score for Mr Agyapong has fueled suspicions of foul play, including ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and the exclusion of pro-Agyapong monitors.

A delegate, Mark Kofi Amogbe, who showed phone recordings of his vote for Kennedy Agyapong, said, “This time around for Ken, he should be wild and deploy serious polling agents and not trust the party executives,” he added.

“Ken got 25 votes in Bunkpurugu, but the votes were not counted.”

Mr Agyapong, who has positioned himself as a reformist voice within the NPP, listened intently as the delegates laid out their evidence, nodding in acknowledgment of their frustration.

“They would come to you, telling you we are your brothers, vote for us, but I want to ask you: looking at the conditions of your roads, do you have brothers here? When it comes to development, are you not part of Ghana? Why must your roads be in this state, yet they claim to be your brothers? This time, I’m also watching.”

Kennedy’s campaign has increasingly focused on northern outreach, following similar stops in Walewale and Yunyoo, where he urged delegates to allocate him a fair share of votes despite regional loyalties to Bawumia.

The former MP’s tour underscores persistent divisions from the primaries, which pitted establishment figures like Bawumia against more populist challengers like Agyapong, whose grassroots appeal resonated in areas like the Central and Volta regions but faltered in the north.

In response to the allegations, the Bunkpurugu Constituency Executive Committee issued a firm denial through its secretary, Moses Bumbom.

The statement, released late Thursday, rejected any notion of electoral malpractice, insisting that the primaries adhered strictly to party protocols supervised by the Electoral Commission. It further described the claims as not only false and misleading but also maliciously intended to damage the integrity of both the constituency and regional executives.

Officials emphasized that vote counts were transparent, with observers from all aspirants present, and attributed Mr Agyapong’s poor showing to a lack of local mobilization rather than interference. They called on aggrieved members to channel concerns through official party channels instead of public spectacles that could undermine unity.

The statement also accused the individuals of having collected money from Kennedy Agyapong’s team but failing to vote for him and now making the false allegations to cover up their own dishonesty and betrayal.

“In view of the gravity of the matter, the Constituency Executive will convene an emergency meeting to refer the said individuals to the Party’s Disciplinary Committee for investigation and appropriate sanctions in accordance with the party’s constitution.”

The confrontation highlights deeper fractures in the NPP, which suffered a stinging defeat in the December 2024 general elections, where Dr Bawumia lost to President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.

Experts point to the primaries’ fallout as a key factor in the party’s underwhelming voter turnout, with many Agyapong supporters feeling alienated by perceived favoritism toward Dr Bawumia.

An accident on the Tatale–Zabzugu road on Friday night, October 24, claimed three lives and left more than ten others injured.

According to reports, the crash occurred when a Kia truck with registration number GW-5828-17, carrying traders returning from the Kukpalgu market, collided with a stationary Motorking tricycle that had broken down and been left on the road.

Eyewitnesses said the bright lights from an oncoming vehicle from the Zabzugu direction impaired the Kia truck driver’s visibility, causing him to crash into the stationary tricycle.

Two people reportedly died on the spot, while another died upon arrival at the Tatale District Hospital. Over ten others who sustained injuries are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue.

My Wife’s Mother Is The Reason I’m Divorcing My Wife

0

My wife is the kind of woman who tells her family everything that happens in our marriage — literally everything. I’ve tried so many times to explain to her that there should be boundaries, that some things are meant to stay between husband and wife, but she never listens. She tells her mother about the times we argue, when we have bad sex, when I can’t give her money, or even when she suspects that I might have another woman.

After a while, I got tired. I started distancing myself emotionally just to protect my peace. Whenever I suspected she had complained about me to her mother, I would ignore her mom’s calls. I respect my father-in-law a lot, but unfortunately, he doesn’t have much say in their home. His wife runs the show, so talking to him about anything feels like talking to a wall.

One night, something strange happened — my wife didn’t come home. We hadn’t fought or even argued that day. I called her phone several times until she finally answered late in the night and said, “I’m sleeping at my parents’ house. I came here to visit them, but it got late so I decided to stay.”

Something about her tone didn’t sound right. I had a gut feeling she was lying, so I called her father to…..Read Full Story Here…………….

Ousted Madagascan president stripped of citizenship

0

Former Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina, who was ousted in a coup last week, has been stripped of his citizenship by the new regime.

The order, signed by new Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, cited local laws stipulating that people who acquired foreign citizenship should lose their Malagasy nationality.

Rajoelina, 51, obtained French citizenship a decade ago, prompting calls for his disqualification from the 2023 presidential election. But he defied those calls and went on to win.

He fled the African island nation after weeks of protests over persistent power and water shortages, culminating in a military takeover led by Col Michael Randrianirina.

Rajoelina has said he has gone into hiding for his own safety, and his whereabouts remain unclear.

When he disclosed his French nationality months before Madagascar’s last presidential election, he argued he had only secretly acquired it to make things easier for his children studying in France.

In recent weeks, he had faced demonstrations initially organised by youth movement Gen Z Mada and inspired by similar anti-government protests in Nepal, which were only exacerbated when his government responded with violence.

Rajoelina sacked his energy minister and then his government – but this did little to quell the calls for him to step down.

Protesters had hoped that Rajoelina would resign to pave the way for a smooth, democratic transition.

Instead, he clung to power, eventually leading to Madagascar’s elite military unit, of which Randrianirina was chief, to seize power.

He has now been sworn in and has formed a new government, pledging to hold elections within two years.

Actress Ifu Ennada shares emotional testimony, says she survived amnesia, near-death, and spiritual attacks

Nollywood actress and entrepreneur, Ifu Ennada, has shared a powerful testimony about surviving a series of near-death experiences, memory loss, and intense spiritual battles.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, the Big Brother Naija star revealed that over the past one and a half years, she has battled severe health issues and spiritual attacks that nearly took her life.

According to her, the most recent episode happened on July 23 — her birthday — when she suddenly woke up with no memory of who she was.

“Without any warning, I suddenly woke up with no memory of who I was. It felt like I was on a strange planet where I had no past, knew no one, and had no purpose,” she wrote.

Ifu explained that even after being shown pictures and videos of her family, she still couldn’t remember them. She described the experience as terrifying, saying it felt like her entire life before that day had been wiped clean.

Despite the ordeal, the actress said she never forgot God during her period of amnesia.

“Through the help of the Holy Spirit, I did not forget God. I remembered there was someone called Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God. Then I remembered my name — Faith — and its meaning in Hebrews 11:1,” she said.

Ifu credited her recovery to divine intervention, saying her mother — a prayer warrior — and medical help played key roles, but it was ultimately God who restored her.

“My testimony is that God intervened, He showed me mercy, He healed me, and gave me a new meaning to Psalm 118:5. To the glory of His name, I am fully restored,” she added.

She noted that her business suffered during her illness, but she believes God is set to relaunch it bigger and better.

Ifu said she decided to go public with her story after feeling led by the Holy Spirit during the recent Hallelujah Challenge, adding that she wanted to publicly thank God for saving her life.

“Please, just help me glorify God because my enemies wanted to ‘unalive’ me, but He helped me and saved me. I am a woman helped by God!”

Use of mother tongue for teaching now compulsory in all basic schools — Education Minister

0

The use of local languages as a medium of instruction is now compulsory in all basic schools across the country, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed.

He explained that the move forms part of efforts to improve teaching and learning outcomes at the foundational level.

The Minister gave the directive on Friday at the official launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disability initiative by President John Dramani Mahama in Accra.

Mr Iddrisu noted that the President had emphasised the need to shift focus to basic education in order to improve learning outcomes at that level.

“Mr President, the story is told of a young girl whose teacher somewhere in the Ashanti Region went in and was waxing English, teaching at those early stages of development. Then, the child told the teacher that, ‘try to speak a little Twi, so that I can understand you’,” the Minister stated.

“So, Mr. President, in line with that and with your authority, I am directing the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the GES that from today, teacher use of mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all Ghanaian schools.”

The Minister further directed the GES to ensure strict enforcement of the directive.

“That a Ghanaian child was not born into an English family but a proud Ashanti Akan family and deserves to learn. This is part of President Mahama’s Reset Agenda,” he said.

Touching on the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disability initiative, Mr Iddrisu said President Mahama was not only fulfilling a major campaign promise but also demonstrating that he remained a compassionate leader committed to improving the lives of vulnerable Ghanaians.

He explained that the initiative was aimed at ensuring inclusivity and giving true meaning to the belief that disability is not inability.

Mr Iddrisu announced that the new stress-free fees initiative would cost the state and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) about GHS31 million.

“President Mahama has asked me to assure you that so long as he is President, from now until 2028, the GETFund will commit GHS50 million every other year to support a new disability fee and other associated interventions,” he said.

The Minister reiterated President Mahama’s commitment to expanding access to quality and relevant education.

He disclosed that during President Mahama’s recent visit to China, his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, as part of his birthday celebration, gifted Ghana a grant of 200 million Chinese Yuan Renminbi (equivalent to 30 million US dollars).

Mr Iddrisu noted that President Mahama had since directed that the 30 million dollar Chinese grant be used to establish a Science University in Damongo, the Savannah Regional capital.

He said the President recognised that access to quality secondary and higher education remained a challenge in some parts of the country and acknowledged the continued role of the church in partnering the state in the provision of higher education.

“Accordingly, President Mahama is dedicating the 200 million RMB for the start and establishment of a Catholic Science University in Damongo in the Savannah Region. So that, at least, that will be done,” the Minister said.

Mr Iddrisu added that two additional new technical universities would be established in Jasikan in the Oti Region and Techiman in the Bono East Region.

Strengthen lifestyle audits to hold corrupt officials accountable

0

Former Auditor-General and member of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) team, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has called for a strengthening of Ghana’s asset declaration and lifestyle audit systems to curb corruption and promote accountability in public service.

His remarks come in response to revelations by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, that the scale of financial losses in the ongoing National Service Authority (NSA) scandal is far greater than initially reported.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue with Selorm Adonoo on Saturday, October 25, Mr. Domelevo lamented the weak internal control systems within public institutions, which he said embolden officials to embezzle funds without consequence.

“Very few people are held accountable for embezzlement of funds, so people feel emboldened. Internal controls are so weak. I think if we strengthen internal auditors who are there 24/7 checking abuses and irregularities, I think it will help us very well,” he said.

He further emphasised the importance of conducting lifestyle audits to expose individuals whose wealth cannot be justified by their known sources of income.

“To be honest with you, lifestyle audit is very important; some of us are calling for the strengthening of the assets liability declaration regime or the law which regulates it. If we do that, people will start hiding their assets and properties. Even without doing that, people are already hiding their assets. You hear of children who have so much property and have not worked. Or people who are working, but their assets and what they earn don’t match. So we need a lifestyle audit so that you can establish whether you obtain it rightly or not.”

He stressed that without robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, corruption will continue to thrive unchecked in Ghana’s public institutions.

Bunkprugu NPP leaders respond to 2023 election rigging allegations

Correspondence from North East Region

The Bunkpurugu Constituency Executive Committee in the North East Region has vehemently denied allegations of rigging in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2023 presidential primaries.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 23, 2025, the committee’s secretary, Moses Bumbom, addressed claims by some delegates alleging they voted for Kennedy Agyapong but were awarded zero votes.

The committee stated, “The attention of the Bunkpurugu constituency executive committee has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media, in which certain individuals are making baseless allegations of electoral malpractice during the last presidential primaries.” They categorically refuted these claims, describing them as “false, misleading, and maliciously intended to damage the integrity of both constituency and regional executives.”

The committee questioned the timing of the allegations, asking, “If, indeed, these individuals claim to have voted for Hon. Ken, the committee questions why no protest or complaint was raised on the day of voting. Their failure to raise any immediate objection and their lack of evidence expose their allegations as fabrications devoid of truth.”

The committee emphasized the strict enforcement of procedures during the voting process and announced plans to convene an emergency meeting to refer the individuals making the allegations to the party’s disciplinary committee.

Nana Konadu’s passing a profound national loss – National House of Chiefs

0

The National House of Chiefs has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a trailblazer, visionary, and advocate for women’s empowerment.

In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Stephen Owusu, on behalf of the President of the House, the chiefs noted that Nana Konadu’s passing is a great loss to the nation, adding that Ghana mourns not only a former First Lady but also “a woman of courage, conviction, and compassion who dedicated her life to the service of others.”

The statement highlighted her tireless advocacy for women’s rights through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which transformed the lives of countless women and children by promoting education, healthcare, and economic independence. “Her voice and leadership helped shape national conversations on gender equality, social justice, and inclusive development long before these became mainstream causes,” it said.

The House also paid tribute to her as a devoted wife and partner to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, commending her grace, discipline, and deep sense of duty that earned her respect at home and abroad.

“Ghana has indeed lost a remarkable mother, leader, and stateswoman whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” the statement read.

The National House of Chiefs extended heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family and all Ghanaians, assuring them of their prayers and support during this difficult time.

“May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.

Banks are also complicit in DRIP and Buffer Stock scandals – Domelevo

0

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has suggested that some banks are aiding corrupt activities by failing to question suspicious financial transactions involving large sums of money.

Mr Domelevo expressed concern that while banks often demand identification from customers for minor transactions, they appear reluctant to raise the alarm when substantial sums are moved through their systems.

He argued that such selective enforcement of banking regulations makes financial institutions complicit in corrupt practices.

“If you go to the bank today and you want GH¢100,000, you remember the controls they put in place; they want you to bring your Ghana Card, validate, and so on, and so when you hear these amounts are going through the same banks, it means the fraudsters are also in the banks or the banks are also colluding,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday while discussing the recent corruption cases revealed by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine.

Recently, the Attorney General noted that the government has demanded a refund of $2 million from JA Plant Pool Ghana Limited following the alleged discovery of financial irregularities in the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) contract.

Dr. Ayine also stated that investigators have uncovered a sophisticated money-laundering operation involving suspicious transfers amounting to over GH¢40.5 million through Sawtina Enterprise, a company allegedly linked to the former CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company, Abdul-Wahab Hannan.

According to the Attorney-General, the financial transactions were carried out through several bank accounts belonging to the suspects.

Mr Domelevo therefore urged regulatory bodies to compel banks to strictly monitor and report unusual or unlawful financial transactions, stressing that greater vigilance from the banking sector is crucial to curbing corruption in the country.

“We must have to go there and shake the banks because I can’t understand how some of these things will go through financial institutions which are not asleep.”

Israeli Ambassador slams critics for attempting to block Israeli Film Festival in Accra

Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Roey Gilad

The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Roey Gilad, has emphatically dismissed criticisms that the recent Israeli Film Festival, held at Silverbird Cinema in Accra, was merely a vehicle for “propaganda”.

The Ambassador defended the festival as a genuine cultural exchange aimed at building bridges between the two nations, highlighting a deliberate strategy of intertwining Israeli and Ghanaian arts.

Ambassador Gilad, speaking at a recent press briefing, addressed the backlash—which included public protests and calls for boycotts from a coalition of activists and prominent Ghanaians—by focusing on the event’s cultural substance and high public attendance.

“We brought here five excellent Israeli films,” the Ambassador stated. “We went to UNIMAC (University of Media, Arts and Communication, formerly GIJ and NAFTI) … We told them, let’s add to those Israeli long films short Ghanaian films.’ That’s exactly the essence of this embassy: to intertwine, to put together Israeli art and Ghanaian art and culture… and to build a bridge.”

‘A Hollow Argument’

The Film Festival, which took place over several days at the Silverbird Cinema at the Accra Mall, was a flashpoint for pro-Palestinian groups who viewed the event as an attempt to “whitewash” Israel’s image amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

A broad coalition of Ghanaian individuals and organisations reportedly signed a petition urging Silverbird to cancel the screenings.

Ambassador Gilad, however, countered the narrative of political manoeuvring with the evidence of public interest, noting that the venue was well-attended.

“The Silverbird Theatre was full of people who wanted to see art, wanted to see culture, Israeli culture and Ghanaian culture,” he said.

He characterised the opposition as a small, non-representative group seeking to stifle cultural freedom.

“The very few people who objected to it basically wanted to prevent Ghanaians from watching this Israeli culture, Israeli art, and Israeli films.”

When questioned directly about the “propaganda” label by MyJoyOnline, the Ambassador dismissed the claim outright.

“If there are some – I don’t know, how should I call them? – Some people who think this is propaganda, then really this argument is so hollow, it’s so empty that I really think it’s not worth my reaction.”

Cultural Diplomacy as a Core Mandate

The Ambassador detailed the Embassy’s consistent focus on cultural exchange programmes, providing figures on past and future collaborations as proof of its genuine, long-term commitment beyond any immediate political context.

  • Past Collaborations: “Last year we brought in Israeli choreographers to work with local dancers. We brought an Israeli jazz trio to play with local jazz groups.”
  • Future Plans: “Next year we are going to bring a playwright to work with your wonderful playwrights.”

The Ambassador stressed that cultural interaction remains a foundational pillar of the Embassy’s work, designed to create mutual understanding at a grassroots level.

“Culture is a very important bridge in the work of this embassy. We did it in the past. We are doing it now and we’ll continue to do it in the future,” H.E. Gilad concluded, reaffirming the Israeli mission’s focus on people-to-people ties between Jerusalem and Accra through the arts.

Correspondence from Eastern Region

The 199th edition of the celebrated Akuapem Odwira Festival has been held in grand style at the forecourt of the Okuapem Traditional Council in Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region, drawing thousands of celebrants, dignitaries, and cultural enthusiasts from across the country and beyond.

This year’s festival, held under the theme “Preserving Our Heritage, Securing Our Future,” highlighted the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s rich cultural legacy while promoting unity and sustainable development among the people of Akuapem.

The special guest of honour for the durbar was His Royal Majesty Jira Yagbonwura Bii-Kunto Jewu Soale I, King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom.

His presence symbolized growing inter-ethnic unity and collaboration between traditional authorities across regions.

The durbar also witnessed a massive turnout of Akuapems from far and near, amid a strong security presence by police and military personnel following recent tensions ahead of the event.

Dignitaries in Attendance

Prominent guests included Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, Okuapehene; former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Nana Otutu Ababio V, Chief of Adukrom and Nifahene of the Akuapem Traditional Area; First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Bernard Ahiafor; Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey; Members of Parliament and Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from Okere and Akuapem North; as well as Paramount Chief of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III.

Also present were clergy, queen mothers, and popular spiritual leader Prophet Ajagurajah, who joined the procession to honor the cultural and spiritual significance of the festival.

Okuapehene Calls for Preservation of Heritage

In his address, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, the Okuapehene, underscored the need for unity and commitment to the preservation of Ghanaian culture and values.

“Akans celebrate Odwira to cleanse ourselves and to think about the development of our communities,” he said. “We must secure our heritage so we can have a beautiful future. Our children will have a lot to say about us if we act well today.”

He expressed concern over the erosion of cultural values through foreign influences and urged traditional leaders to protect indigenous languages and customs.

“Illegal mining is taking a toll on our environment, many think the Akuapem area has no gold, but we do. My vision is to see Okuapeman rise and develop while preserving what our forefathers left us.”

Eastern Regional Minister Commends Akuapem for Upholding Tradition

Delivering her speech at the durbar, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, Eastern Regional Minister, commended the Akuapem Traditional Council for their steadfastness in maintaining the Odwira tradition for nearly two centuries.

Odwira reminds us of where we come from and the values that shape us as a people,” she said. “It is a time for reflection, thanksgiving, and the renewal of unity.”

She noted that the theme for this year’s celebration was timely, emphasizing that the customs and traditions passed down by forebears are the foundations for building a prosperous future.

“Our heritage is our identity, and we owe it as a duty to protect and preserve our uniqueness. Posterity will not forgive us if we abandon our beautiful culture for another’s,” she stressed.

The Minister also praised the Akuapem Traditional Council for remaining resolute against illegal mining (“galamsey”), which continues to devastate many communities across the country.

“Akuapem stands out as one of the few traditional areas where illegal mining has not been allowed. This is commendable and must continue,” she said.

Awatey also highlighted the government’s commitment to education as a tool for empowerment and transformation, urging traditional authorities to continue investing in the youth and in communal development.

Toward the 200th Odwira Celebration

As Okuapem prepares to mark the bicentennial celebration of the Odwira Festival in 2026, traditional leaders called for unity and renewed commitment to cultural preservation, economic empowerment, and youth participation.

“As we approach the 200th celebration of Odwira, let us reflect on the legacy we wish to leave behind,” the Okuapehene urged. “We must respect traditions while embracing innovation.”

The festival concluded with colorful displays of traditional music, drumming, dancing, and a grand procession of chiefs and queen mothers adorned in resplendent kente, showcasing the splendor and enduring heritage of Okuapeman.

Background:

The Odwira Festival, which originated in the early 19th century, is one of the most celebrated traditional festivals in Ghana.

It serves as a time for purification, reconciliation, and thanksgiving among the people of Akuapem and the Akan ethnic group at large.

Ghana Must Invest in What Feeds Its People, Not Just What Sells Abroad – Dr. Ackah

0

Ghana’s agricultural sector has long been hailed for its potential to feed the nation and drive economic growth. Yet, experts warn that current policies have often prioritised crops for export over the staples that sustain households across the country.

Dr. Frank Ackah, Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast’s Department of Crop Science, says the country must urgently reorient its agricultural strategy to focus on food security and the needs of ordinary Ghanaians, rather than chasing foreign markets.

Ghana Must Invest in What Feeds Its People, Not Just What Sells Abroad – Dr. Ackah
Dr. Frank Ackah

“All of a sudden, farmers are moving away from what they are used to growing because they are being told what the external market wants,” he said. “We have to do more to come out with our own ways of doing things.”

Dr. Ackah explained that over the years, cash crops like cocoa, MD2 pineapples, and other export-oriented products have dominated development programs. While profitable, these initiatives often sideline indigenous staples such as yams, cassava, plantains, and local sweet potato varieties, the foods that form the backbone of Ghanaian diets.

He further noted that local farmers face constant pressure from government and donor-driven programs to prioritise crops for export. These policies, he warned, risk undermining local food systems and making smallholder farmers overly dependent on external markets.

The expert also highlighted insufficient investment in improving the varieties and yields of staple crops. For example, while sugarloaf pineapples are well-adapted and widely grown locally, export demands have pushed farmers toward MD2 varieties, which are more susceptible to pests and less suited to local conditions. Similarly, efforts to promote orange-fleshed sweet potatoes have often overlooked the more resilient indigenous types.

“Every region in Ghana grows yam, and it’s central to our food culture,” Dr. Ackah said. “Yet, too much attention goes to crops that feed the export market instead of feeding our people.”

He argued that a strategic focus on indigenous crops could simultaneously improve food security, strengthen local economies, and preserve Ghana’s agricultural heritage.

Dr. Ackah emphasised that Ghana’s agricultural policies should be guided by the principle of feeding its people first, with export markets serving as a complement rather than a replacement. By prioritising local needs, he believes the country can secure both national food security and long-term economic resilience.

What to know about a rapidly rising form of breast cancer that’s hard to detect

0

Rates of one type of breast cancer — invasive lobular carcinoma — have been rising in the United States more than three times faster than those of all other breast cancers combined over the past decade, according to a new study.

This elusive breast cancer that’s hard to spot in routine mammograms is behind more than 1 in 10 cases nationwide.

The research, published in Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society, analyzed national data from 2012 to 2021 and found that rates of invasive lobular carcinoma increased by about 2.8% each year, while rates of all other breast cancer rose by about 0.8% a year.

What exactly is invasive lobular carcinoma, and how common is it? How is it diagnosed, and why can it be more difficult to find during screenings? Who is most at risk? What are the treatment options? And what should women know about reducing their risk of developing this and other types of breast cancer?

To help us with these questions, I spoke with CNN wellness medical expert Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and adjunct associate professor at the George Washington University. Wen previously served as Baltimore’s health commissioner.

CNN: What is invasive lobular carcinoma, and how common is it?

Dr Leana Wen: Invasive lobular carcinoma, also known as ILC or lobular breast cancer, is a type of breast cancer that begins in the milk-producing glands of the breast, called lobules, and then spreads into nearby tissue. These malignant tumors are often hormone receptor-positive, meaning the cancer cells grow in response to estrogen or progesterone.

ILC is the second most common type of breast cancer, after invasive ductal carcinoma, and accounts for 10% to 15% of all new breast cancer diagnoses, according to the National Cancer Institute. About 47,500 ILC cases are diagnosed in the US each year, and more women are diagnosed with it than with brain, kidney, liver, pancreatic or ovarian cancer.

CNN: Why is ILC often more difficult to find with routine mammograms?

Wen: This type of tumor tends to grow in a way that doesn’t change the breast’s structure as much as other cancers. Instead of forming a defined mass, the cancer cells spread through the tissue in thin strands that appear more like normal breast tissue on imaging. Because of this, mammograms may show only subtle changes, or sometimes none at all. Women may also be less likely to feel a distinct lump during a breast self-exam, which can delay detection.

CNN: What other imaging is used to diagnose ILC?

Wen: A breast ultrasound can help spot areas of thickened tissue that don’t show up on a mammogram, and a breast MRI provides a more detailed view that can reveal cancers hidden in dense breast tissue.

These tests aren’t routinely recommended for everyone. Mammography remains the standard screening tool for most women. But those at higher risk, including women with dense breasts and those with a strong family history of breast cancer or known genetic mutations, may be advised to have an ultrasound or MRI in addition to regular mammograms.

CNN: What does this study show in terms of the rise of cases and who is most at risk?

Wen: Researchers found that ILC has been increasing across every racial and ethnic group, but the steepest rise was seen among Asian American and Pacific Islander women, whose incidence grew by about 4.4% each year in the study period. Age is also a risk factor, as women 65 and older are more likely to be diagnosed with ILC than with invasive ductal carcinoma. About 70% of new ILC cases were diagnosed in women 60 and older; the median age of diagnosis is 66.

CNN: How do the study authors explain the rise especially in this type of breast cancer?

Wen: Several factors may be driving this greater increase. Because ILC is strongly linked to hormones, changes in hormone exposure over time could be part of the reason. Rising rates of obesity and alcohol use, along with changes in childbearing and menopause patterns, may also contribute to the steady increase.

Improvement in diagnosis and greater awareness of ILC may be leading to more accurate identification. Some lobular cancers may have been misclassified as ductal cancers in the past, so part of the rise may reflect better recognition. In addition, more women are living longer after menopause, which can increase the likelihood of developing ILC compared with other types of breast cancer.

CNN: What are the treatment options for ILC?

Wen: Treatment is similar to that for other breast cancers. Surgery to remove the tumor, followed by radiation, is common, as is hormonal therapy, since most tumors grow in response to estrogen or progesterone. Chemotherapy may be used in some cases. For advanced disease, newer targeted drugs combined with hormonal therapy can help slow progression and improve outcomes. However, ILC may have greater resistance to treatment, especially in more advanced disease, and tends to carry a poorer prognosis once it has spread.

CNN: How can women reduce their risk of developing ILC and other types of breast cancer?

Wen: Some risk factors can’t be changed, such as age or family history, but many lifestyle choices can make a difference. Quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight and staying physically active all help lower the risk of breast cancer. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains supports overall health and may reduce inflammation linked to cancer.

Regular screening and knowing what’s normal for your breasts are key for early detection. Talk with your doctor about your risk factors and decide together when you should begin screening and whether you need tests in addition to a mammogram.

Finally, pay attention to changes in your breasts, such as thickening, swelling, nipple discharge, different colors or new areas of fullness, and seek medical evaluation as soon as something looks or feels different.
