Ghana champions Nature-Based Solutions as key to sustainable development at Africa Climate Dialogue

0

Ghana has reaffirmed its leadership and commitment to advancing Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) as a central strategy for achieving sustainable national development and climate resilience.

“Nature-Based Solutions are more than environmental interventions; they are development accelerators,” Mr. Peter Dery, Director of Environment, at the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), said.

“They generate green jobs, promote social inclusion, and restore ecosystems that regulate water, carbon, and biodiversity.”

Dr Dery was speaking at the opening of the maiden Africa Climate Dialogue, organised by the Africa Centre for Nature-Based Climate Action (AC4NCA) in Accra.

It was on the theme: “Harnessing Nature-Based Solutions: A Pathway to Sustainable National Development.”

The event brought together government officials, policymakers, academics, private sector players,

and civil society representatives to share experiences and explore practical pathways to use nature’s potential to address the climate crisis while promoting inclusive economic growth.

Dr Dery said the country had made significant progress in implementing its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

He said Ghana had achieved an estimated 28.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emission reductions by 2024, representing 45 per cent of the total Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) target.

Mr. Dery attributed the progress to bold policy measures, strategic investments, and practical interventions that blended innovation, community engagement, and the power of nature.

He highlighted flagship initiatives such as the ‘One Child, One Tree’ programme, the Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project, and the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Resilience Investment Project, which is restoring mangroves and wetlands in Keta and Ada to protect coastal livelihoods and biodiversity.

Another initiative, the Improved Resilience of Coastal Communities Project, being implemented with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and funded by the Adaptation Fund, uses mangrove replanting, shoreline vegetation rehabilitation, and early warning systems to build community resilience.

He, however, identified financing, data and monitoring, and community participation as major challenges to scaling up NbS in Ghana. He said achieving Ghana’s conditional NDC targets and NbS goals would require about US$15 billion by 2030.

To address this, Ghana is developing a Biodiversity Finance Plan with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and has produced Ecosystem Services Accounts to place an economic value on the services nature provides.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Seidu Issifu, Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, described Nature-Based Solutions as a transformative approach to addressing climate and developmental challenges simultaneously.

“Whether through mangrove restoration that protects coastal communities, agroforestry that enhances food security, or wetland conservation that purifies water and regulates floods, Nature-Based Solutions show that environmental stewardship and economic growth can and must go hand in hand,” he said.

He noted that the government firmly recognised that nature was not merely a passive victim of climate change but an essential part of the solution.

For this reason, Ghana had made a deliberate commitment to integrate NbS into national development and climate policies.

He announced plans for a National Climate Change and Sustainability Hub, a centre of excellence to drive policy innovation, capacity building, and research coordination in Ghana’s climate action efforts.

The Africa Climate Dialogue aims to serve as a flagship platform for advancing nature-based climate action, policy innovation, and investment partnerships across Africa, positioning Ghana as a thought leader in integrating nature into national development.

Rev. Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Board Chair of AC4NCA, said the Centre was established to champion the adoption and integration of nature-based solutions into Africa’s climate and development agenda.

She explained that the world continued to struggle with interconnected challenges of land degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change, which directly affect food and water security, infrastructure, public health, and livelihoods across Africa.

“These are not distant threats; they are lived realities across our continent,” Rev. Aryee said. “But within these challenges lie remarkable opportunities. By valuing and investing in nature, we can repair degraded landscapes, create green jobs, and build a resilient and prosperous Africa.”

She said the Centre was ready to work with governments, academia, the private sector, and development partners to accelerate the implementation of nature-based climate solutions in Ghana and across the continent.

Mr Jakob Linulf, Danish Ambassador to Ghana, said the country had rich natural resources that needed to be protected, saying “it is currently under threats due to human activities.”

He noted that Denmark was ready to support Ghana to attend sustainable development while protecting its natural resources through nature based solution.

“I Married A Disabled Man Out Of Pity, I Had 3 Kids For Him, But I Regretted Marrying Him” Iya Tinko

News Hub Creator4h

Popular Nollywood actress Yemisi Adenekan, also known as Iya Tinko, has revealed how her marriage with her ex-husband, who was disabled, ended, while also stating why she regretted her decision not to listen to her mom’s advice about her marriage to the disabled man.

According to the video that was posted on the official YouTube channel of Jeff Owolewa TV during an interview, she disclosed that her mother warned her not to marry the disabled man that she was in a relationship with, but that she didn’t listen to her mom’s advice, and she later regretted her action.

According to Iya Tinko, she said, “My ex-husband didn’t break up with me because of my profession, his mother was the one who caused our break up. My mom warned me not to marry a disabled man, but I ignored my mom’s advice. I once had an accident, and the doctor said my legs would be amputated, but I later found a solution, and my legs weren’t amputated. I insisted on marrying the disabled man because I thought, what if my legs were also amputated? I married a disabled man out of pity, I had 3 kids for him, but I regretted marrying him. His mother didn’t allow us to have peace in the marriage, and we had to break up with each other.”

Engage the law if treated unfairly — Eduwatch to Students

0

Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has urged parents and students to pursue legal redress if they feel unfairly treated under the hairstyle directive issued by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

His remarks follow the Minister’s instruction to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and heads of second-cycle institutions to take full responsibility for managing student conduct, including matters of grooming and appearance.

The Minister, speaking at the 75th Anniversary celebration of Mawuli School, addressed rising public debate on social media over hairstyle restrictions in schools. He emphasised that schools are institutions for building discipline and character, not beauty contests.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, October 26, Kofi Asare noted that while the Minister’s directive aims to promote uniformity and hygiene among students, it must still respect the rights of individuals.

He said students who feel victimised or discriminated against because of their hairstyles have the right to challenge such actions through legal means.

Mr. Asare added that enforcing discipline must go hand in hand with upholding fairness, inclusivity, and respect for personal dignity within Ghana’s educational system.

“It’s not always about indiscipline or discipline. I align with the law, and I encourage anyone who feels unfairly treated to engage the law. Society grows and so should the law grow,” he said.

James Gunn’s DCU Can’t Ignore This Underrated Green Lantern Run for Lanterns

0

The DCU‘s rollout has gone better than expected, as fans have opened up to the new version of the cinematic DC Universe. Numerous projects are coming down the pipe, with the most exciting one for a lot of DC fans being Lanterns, a show that will bring the Green Lantern mythos to audiences the world over. The show will follow John Stewart and his mentor/partner Hal Jordan, and looks to be a superhero sci-fi police procedural. Over the decades, there have been multiple great depictions of Stewart and Jordan, as well as brilliant stories that should inform Lanterns, but there’s one Green Lantern run that the show should definitely take inspiration from: The Green Lantern and The Green Lantern: Season Two from Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp.

These two 12 issues series left behind the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum that had become the focus of Green Lantern stories since the mid ’00s, taking readers on a trip through the weirder sides of the DC Universe. Morrison and Sharp set out to do the same sort of thing that it seems like Lanterns is about to do, focusing on the Green Lanterns more as intergalactic police than as superheroes out to save the universe. It’s exactly the kind of run that Lanterns should pattern itself after.

Morrison/Sharp’s The Green Lantern Went Old School

Green Lantern became the most popular solo DC comic of the ’00s thanks to Geoff Johns’s amazing run. Johns brought back Hal Jordan, resurrected the Green Lantern Corps, made Sinestro important again, and introduced readers to the new Lantern Corps. It was big sci-fi superhero spectacle, but as good as it could be, there wasn’t really much soul to it. Jordan got boring as the book went on, with the character staying mostly static. He was the best Green Lantern ever, and that was the extent of his characterization. In the years after Johns stopped writing Green Lantern, this became the primary characterization for Hal and it didn’t do much for the character.

Morrison loves old school DC and they dug deep into Green Lantern history to make their Hal different from what he had been before. Hal is still an amazing Green Lantern, but there’s a wildness to him, an unpredictability, that is missing from other versions of the character. He’s someone who isn’t good at anything but being a Green Lantern, who is bored with the mundanity of life on Earth and prefers the stars. At times, he’s a bit reckless, but he gets the job done. The Guardians of the Universe trust him with the most dangerous missions, because they know his wild streak allows him to think outside the box in ways that other Green Lanterns don’t.

Every Green Lantern from Earth, Ranked

Of course, this being Morrison, the book takes Hal to some truly mindblowing places. He ends battling the Blackstars, an evil anti-Lantern Corps out to conquer the universe, the Anti-Matter Lanterns of the Anti-Matter Universe, alien superheroes that broke bad, a team up with Barry Allen and Oliver Queen, being trapped within his own ring, visiting his favorite vacation spot — a planet out of a D&D campaign, the Ultrawar, and more wild cosmic DC stories. The art by Sharp is gorgeous and brings all Morrison’s bizarre ideas to life beautifully, giving the book the perfect artistic tone. Their run was the total package, jumping to the top of the greatest Green Lantern stories of all time.

Morrison and Sharp took the idea of Green Lantern back to its roots — a human in the wilds of the universe trying to do the best he could — and it was such a breath of fresh air. Green Lantern stories had lost their luster, circling the same ideas over and over again, and Morrison and Sharp broke the concept out of that holding pattern. It played up the intergalactic police force aspect of the Green Lantern, and did it with a version of Hal Jordan that fit perfectly into the wilds of outer space. It was perfect Green Lantern, and it’s exactly the direction that the DCU should take Lanterns.

Lanterns Needs to Get as Wild as the Morrison/Sharp’s Green Lantern

2011’s Green Lantern tried its best to capture the feel of ’00s Green Lantern comics, and it didn’t really appeal to anyone, not even fans of Green Lantern. Lanterns has an uphill battle ahead of it, and honestly, the best thing that DC Studios can do is take things in the wildest directions possible. Most fans have never seen a sci-fi police procedural, and they have the chance to take things to some weird places. Luckily, they have a guiding light for that sort of thing — Morrison and Sharp’s Green Lantern run.

The book embraced the police procedural and sci-fi aspects of the Green Lantern mythos, and that’s the same thing that Lanterns seems like it wants to do. Lanterns is going to focus on John Stewart, but that doesn’t mean it can’t give us a great Hal, one that embraces the wilder aspects of the character that Morrison brought to the fore. Lanterns needs to show new fans what Green Lantern stories can be at their weirdest, and I sincerely hope that James Gunn had the creatives behind the show check out the Morrison/Sharp run.

Nations FC sack head Coach Kassim Mingle despite win over Wonders

0

Ghana Premier League side, Nations FC, have announced the departure of head coach Kassim Ocansey Mingle and his assistant, Johnson Smith, despite securing a 3-2 victory over Eleven Wonders on matchday seven of the 2025/26 campaign.

The club confirmed the decision in an official statement released on Facebook shortly after the game, describing the move as a “mutual agreement.”

“Nations FC have mutually parted ways with both Head Coach Kassim Ocansey Mingle and Assistant Coach Johnson Smith. We thank them for their service to the club. The club will not make any further comment,” the statement read.

Mingle leaves the Kumasi-based side after guiding them to two solid Premier League campaigns, finishing 7th and 5th in the last two seasons—the latter position affected by a points deduction following a mid-match boycott over alleged poor officiating.

This season, however, Nations have endured a difficult start, winning just two of their opening seven games, drawing twice and losing three.

Their campaign began with a 1-0 victory over newly promoted Swedru All Blacks, followed by a 2-1 defeat to Aduana Stars. Subsequent draws with Samartex and Asante Kotoko, and losses to Medeama and Dreams FC, left the team struggling for consistency.

Saturday’s 3-2 win—powered by an Emmanuel Annor hat-trick—appeared to offer some respite, but it ultimately marked the end of Mingle’s tenure.

Club CEO Kennedy Boakye Ansah reportedly made the decision soon after the match, drawing the curtain on their three-year working relationship.

Mingle’s exit marks the second early-season managerial change in the Ghana Premier League after GoldStars sacked Frimpong Manso a few weeks ago.

Rebel group claims capture of key city in Sudan

0

Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes because of the ongoing conflict Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes because of the ongoing conflict

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) says it has taken control of the western city of el-Fasher, marking a turning point in the civil war.

The group said in a statement on social media that it had seized el-Fasher “from the grip of mercenaries and militias allied with the terrorist army”.

The loss would be a huge blow to the Sudanese army as el-Fasher is its last remaining foothold in the Darfur region, leaving the RSF effectively in control of the area. The army has yet to comment.

It comes after the rebel group announced the capture of the army’s 6th Division Headquarters, saying that it had destroyed “huge military vehicles” and taken military equipment.

BBC Verify has confirmed the authenticity of videos circulating on social media that show RSF fighters inside the army base.

Local pro-army fighters, the Popular Resistance, accused the RSF of running a “media disinformation campaign” to undermine the “high morale of the forces”.

The RSF has surrounded el-Fasher for the last 18 months, with army positions and civilians under frequent bombardment. An estimated 300,000 people have been trapped by the fighting.

In August, satellite imagery showed a series of extensive earthen walls being constructed around the city, aimed at trapping people inside.

The RSF has been steadily advancing towards the 6th Infantry Division command – widely regarded as the army headquarters in the city – from several directions for weeks.

There are still some parts of el-Fasher under the control of the army and allied armed groups – but those are not expected to hold out for long now.

Hunger and disease have spread across the city as residents contend with constant bombardment and dwindling food and medical supplies.

UN investigators have accused the RSF of committing numerous crimes against humanity during the siege. The US has said the RSF has committed genocide against Darfur’s non-Arab population.

Sudan has been ravaged by conflict since 2023, after top commanders of the RSF and the Sudanese army fell out and a vicious power struggle ensued.

More than 150,000 people have died across the country, and about 12 million have fled their homes, creating one of the worst humanitarian crises.

The army controls most of the north and the east, with el-Fasher being, until now, the last major urban centre in Darfur still held by government forces and its allies.

The RSF controls almost all of Darfur and much of the neighbouring Kordofan region.

The group has previously said that it hopes to form a rival government in al-Fasher when it assumes complete control.

Ashaiman residents raise concern over faulty traffic lights

0

Drivers and commuters in the Ashaiman Municipality have expressed frustration over malfunctioning traffic lights that have turned several intersections into danger zones.

They say the faulty signals are causing confusion and frequent accidents, calling on authorities to take swift action to restore order.

Several major roads in Ashaiman have become hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians as non-functioning traffic lights continue to cause near misses, especially during peak hours.

A visit by Channel One News to parts of the municipality revealed that key traffic lights at the Ashaiman Traffic Light Junction, the Overhead, and Kaketo have all broken down. The situation has led to persistent traffic congestion, often forcing police officers to manually direct vehicles.

Some drivers told Channel One News that the malfunctioning signals have caused multiple accidents and appealed for immediate intervention.

“Accidents happen here often because the traffic lights are not working. Drivers rush to move, and if you’re not careful, there’s a crash. It’s really troubling. We are appealing to the authorities to fix it,” said David Awusi, a commercial driver.

Another driver, Kofi Ampedu, added, “It’s true the traffic lights are not functioning, and that has caused many accidents. We are pleading with the government to repair them as soon as possible.”

Commuters also lamented the worsening congestion, noting that the malfunctioning traffic lights make it difficult for drivers to determine who has the right of way, particularly during rush hours.

The Secretary of the Ashaiman branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, described Ashaiman as a rapidly growing commercial hub and underscored the urgent need for authorities to fix not only the traffic lights but also streetlights and roads in the municipality.

While acknowledging some efforts by the Municipal Assembly, he maintained that much more needs to be done to improve road safety and traffic management in the area.

Responding to the concerns, the Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive, Freeman Tsekpo, explained that rodents have damaged the cables of both streetlights and traffic lights across the municipality. He, however, assured residents that repair works are underway and that all faulty lights will be fixed by the end of December.

Legacy Girls’ College (LGC), Ghana’s first all-girls private boarding senior high school, has held its 10th Anniversary Speech and Prize Giving Day, at a colorful ceremony at the school’s campus, Akuse, in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Celebrating a decade of empowering young women through a values-driven and future-forward education, the ceremony was graced by distinguished personalities from academia, industry, parents, the Board of Directors of the school, old students, current students, teaching and non-teaching staff, the media and the general public.

The theme for the celebration was: “A Decade of Intentional Leadership: Empowering the Next Generation of Women.”

In her welcome address, the Head of School, Grace Edziyie said, Legacy is more than academics: “We challenge our girls to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Our vision is to lead and excel in providing a rounded world-class education for young women and contribute to a growing cadre of female leaders across diverse disciplines and occupations.

The founders of the school, Dr. Ellen Hagan and Essie Anno Sackey, in their goodwill message said 10 years ago, Legacy Girls’ College was born out of a simple yet profound conviction that when girls are empowered with knowledge and nurtured to be confident, competent and caring, they can be whatever they choose to be and they can change the world. The founders emphasised that their dream of creating a space where young women would not only excel academically, but also discover their voices, build character and lead with purpose, has been greatly achieved.

“As we look back today, our hearts are filled with gratitude to God. What began as a vision has grown into a vibrant community of learners, thinkers and leaders, a true legacy in motion,” the founders revealed.

The founders paid a growing tribute to their dedicated staff and supporting parents who have walked this journey with them, as well as past and present students, who continue to shine as the heartbeat of Legacy Girls’ College.

“We started with a humble beginning of just 23 students, Legacy Girls’ College has grown into a thriving, full-capacity institution serving nearly 700 students from across Ghana and beyond. The school offers two curricula (the British curriculum and an enhanced Ghanaian curriculum)”.

The Guest Speaker, Betty Djokoto, who stood in for Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, said, Ghana’s development will grow faster if more women play a central role in our developmental agenda. She reiterated Kofi Annan’s quote, “No development strategy is better than the one that involves women as the central players.”

(Left – right): Dr. Ellen Hagan, Millicent Clarke and Essie Anno Sackey

Speaking on the theme: “A Decade of Intentional Leadership: Empowering the next generation of women,” Mrs. Djokoto said, Intentional Leadership for the past 10 years means keeping focus on the original vision and consciously adhering to the core values of Integrity, Responsibility, Ambition and Determination, to shape the behavior and character of the girls, adding that, “Intentional leadership has brought the school this far, and intentional leadership will carry the school through the coming years”.

She congratulated the two founders of the school, Dr. Ellen Hagan and Mrs. Annor Sackey, saying, “Your vision has birthed a movement, a legacy that will accelerate the development of our nation, and we doff our hats to you for that bold and courageous venture.”

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the school, Israel Titi Ofei, an educational colossus, said, ‘This 10-year milestone is not just about the past; it is a recommitment to our mission to nurture girls who will lead at every level of society, grounded in character and in competence”.

Millicent Clarke, the third shareholder and member of the board of directors of the school, advised the students to remember that success is never achieved alone but it is built upon the encouragement, wisdom, and support of parents, family, teachers, classmates, friends and mentors.

Some of the award-winning students (standing), posed with the founders and board of directors of the school

She added that, “When you surround yourself with individuals who exemplify confidence, integrity, and ambition, you naturally begin to adopt those attributes yourself.”

The Deputy Head of School (Domestic), Elizabeth Osei-Opoku recognised the invaluable contributions of the school’s dedicated domestic staff: Cooks, Kitchen hands, facility workers, nurses, counselors and housemistresses, stressing that, “Your commitment, teamwork, and warmth have created a caring environment where our students can thrive, and your services reflect the true spirit of Legacy Girls’ College.”

The Vice Chancellor of University Health & Allied Sciences, Prof. Lydia Aziator, said her two daughters attended Legacy Girls’ College (One completed and the second one in school). She was excited to see how they have grown and become confident and independent.

Prof. Aziator commended the visionaries of the school, management and everyone else who have and are contributing to the impact that Legacy is making in nurturing our future women.

Awards were presented to Teaching and Non-Teaching staff who distinguished themselves in the past 10 years. Students who performed well in various course programmed and those who exemplified the school values, including the ability to speak a Ghanaian language, were presented with prizes.

A minute of silence was observed at the beginning of the programme to honor and commiserate with the children and families of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, the departed former first lady of the Republic of Ghana, who passed on a few days ago.

Other upcoming events to climax the 10th anniversary celebration include:

•Fund‑Raising Dinner Dance – Sunday, 16 November 2025

SMACK student drowns in school pool

A senior three student at St Mary’s College has died after drowning A senior three student at St Mary’s College has died after drowning

A Senior Three student at St Mary’s College, Kisubi (SMACK) has died after drowning in the school’s swimming pool, sending shockwaves among students, teachers, and parents of one of Uganda’s top schools.

The student, identified as Peter Kirwana, allegedly drowned at around 5:40 pm on Friday while taking part in swimming lessons.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the incident, saying police had opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

“We are holding the school swimming coach on charges of rash and negligence to help us with the investigations,” Mr Owoyesigyire told Monitor.

According to police, Kirwana was seen struggling in the pool before the coach pulled him out, but he was already having difficulty breathing.

“He was rushed to Kisubi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” Mr Owoyesigyire added.

The body was later transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

The incident marks the second–reported drowning of a student in a school swimming pool since August, raising renewed concerns over safety measures in elite schools.

On August 3, Kevin Nsamba, a Senior Six student at Seeta High School, drowned during swimming practice at the school’s Mbalala Campus in Mukono District.

The coach in that case was arrested and later released.

In a brief statement on Saturday, St Mary’s College Kisubi head teacher Brother Simeon Simon Mpanga confirmed the death but did not offer further details.

Kirwana was due to be buried on Sunday in Narozali, Masaka.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May Peter’s soul rest in peace,” Brother Mpanga said.

The news of Kirwana’s death triggered panic and anger among parents and alumni, many of whom demanded clarity on how a supervised swimming session turned fatal.

Swimming has become increasingly popular among Uganda’s elite schools over the past decade, prompting institutions to construct their own pools to reduce off-campus drownings in lakes and rivers.

However, experts have repeatedly warned that most schools lack certified lifeguards and safety protocols.

Ghana National Polioplus Committee, partners unveil ‘end polio now’ billboard

The ceremony was led by the Chair of the GNPPC, Past Assistant Governor Gertrude Adzo Akpalu The ceremony was led by the Chair of the GNPPC, Past Assistant Governor Gertrude Adzo Akpalu

The Ghana National PolioPlus Committee (GNPPC) in collaboration with its Polio partners on Friday October 24, 2025 unveiled a giant “End Polio Now” billboard, in Accra, drawing attention to the world community to eradicate poliomyelitis from the surface of the earth.

The ceremony was led by the Chair of the GNPPC, Past Assistant Governor of Ghana District of Rotary International, Gertrude Adzo Akpalu and was attended by members of the GNPPC, the District Governor Nana Yaa Siriboe, Past Assistant Governors, Assistant Governors, Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors.

The unveiling of the billboard in Accra formed part of the activities of the organisation, in observing this year’s World Polio Day, commemorated on 24 October every year.

This year’s theme: “End Polio: Every Child, Every Vaccine, Everywhere” is a call to ensure that no child, in any setting, is left unprotected.

Ghana has been declared polio free with about 99 percent eradication, despite being declared polio free some years earlier.

The little presence of the disease is as result of variants, mostly found in unhealthy environments.

District Governor Nana Yaa Siriboe, together with Dr Raymond Dankoli, Co-ordinator of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative; Prof John Kofi Odoom, a virologist at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Legon, with Rotarians and Rotaractors from different clubs across the country could not hide their smiles as they posed for the cameras at the unveiling of the billboard.

As the cameras clicked, the celebrants shouted in a refrain: “Polio at one place, polio everywhere” to drive home the need to ensure the eradication of vaccine-derived strains and variants from unhealthy environments.

Some of the celebrants, wearing “End Polio Now” tee- shirts flaunted placards that read: “Make History Today”, “Thank You for Helping to Eradicate Polio”, “I Want To/ Will End Polio” among others.

The District Governor commended Rotary, its partners, and members in Ghana for their selfless services in ensuring that vaccination reached every child, saying that the organisation was committed to eradicate the disease.

“Thank you all for helping eradicate polio,” she said.

Prof Odoom in a media interview stressed that surveillance to check new variants of the disease, mostly attributed to unhealthy environments.

Some Rotary clubs in Ghana that had paid their contributions towards polio eradication initiatives were recognised and given certificates.

Polio is a highly contagious disease caused by the polio virus. Although very rare, the virus can attack the parts of the brain that help you breathe, which can lead to death.

Some of the symptoms of polio are flulike symptoms of fever, fatigue sore throat, headache, digestive issues, signs of brain and spinal cord swelling, sensitivity to light, neck stiffness and muscle spasms.

The disease is found in poop, transmitted from person to person, primarily through the faecal-oral route, where the virus spreads via contaminated hands, food, or water. It can also spread through respiratory droplets from sneezes or coughs, although this is less common.

The virus can be spread by an infected person who may not have symptoms.

A secondary mode is through respiratory droplets in an infected environment.

Regina Daniel breaks silence, shares her first post as she travel with her brother and friend on jet

0

Pulse TV reports that Nollywood star Regina Daniels, wife of billionaire and senator Ned Nwoko, has finally spoken out in her own way following widespread rumors of marital trouble. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the actress shared elegant photos and videos showing her enjoying a private jet trip with her brother Samuel Daniels and some close friends.

Regina looked relaxed and radiant, seemingly unbothered by the ongoing chatter about her marriage. Dressed in an all-white designer ensemble and dark shades, the 24-year-old mother of two flashed her signature smile as she posed stylishly inside the jet.

Her brief but striking caption, “Peace of mind is priceless,” immediately drew public attention and was interpreted by many as a subtle message of calm amid the storm. The post spread rapidly across social media, amassing thousands of reactions. Fans applauded her composure and elegance, while some speculated that the post was her quiet response to rumors of a rift with her husband.

Regina’s marriage to Ned Nwoko has always been a topic of public fascination, not only for its luxury and influence but also because of their considerable age gap and Ned’s polygamous background. In recent weeks, speculation about friction between the couple reportedly linked to Ned’s closeness with another wife has dominated online conversations.

Although both parties have refrained from directly commenting on the issue, Regina continues to maintain an image of serenity and strength. Her social media posts reflect positivity, self-assurance, and an emphasis on family. Many fans believe her latest upload was a deliberate way of showing she remains unshaken and content. With her brother by her side, Regina appears surrounded by love and support. Admirers flooded her comment section with praise, describing her as graceful, wise, and focused on her happiness rather than controversy.

Attorney-General’s comments on Chairman Wontumi case unfair and prejudicial – NPP Lawyer

A member of the New Patriotic Party, NPP legal team, Enoch Afoakwa, has criticised the Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine, for what he described as “unfair and prejudicial” public statements regarding the ongoing criminal case involving Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on GBC’s ‘Current Agenda’, lawyer Afoakwa said that while the Attorney-General holds the constitutional mandate under Article 88 to prosecute criminal offences, his public commentary threatened the right to a fair trial of the accused.

Tema Assembly set to clear illegal structures

0

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has begun a city-wide enforcement drive to restore order, enhance safety, and protect livelihoods through the removal of illegal kiosks and containers across the metropolis.

Dubbed the “Tema Facelift Campaign – Organised Spaces, Fair Opportunities,” the initiative forms part of the Mayor’s broader plan to reorganise temporary structures and promote equitable access to trading spaces. The comprehensive eight-month exercise aims to streamline development, improve public safety, and create a cleaner, more organised urban environment.

Under the new directive, the Assembly has identified two enforcement categories — Security Zones and Post–21 July 2025 Offenders.

According to the TMA, schools, hospitals, government premises, security installations, and utility corridors have been designated as Security Zones. Kiosks and containers sited along fence walls, buffer areas, or access routes to these facilities will be cleared immediately due to safety and security risks.

A statement from the Office of the Metropolitan Chief Executive said the action seeks to protect children, patients, and the public while ensuring access for emergency services.

“Hospitals and clinics must be reachable by ambulances and emergency responders at all times. Similarly, schools and security installations must remain free from congestion and obstruction,” the statement noted.

The second phase targets structures erected after 21 July 2025, when the Mayor suspended all new permits and renewals for temporary structures. The Assembly said all kiosks and containers built after that date are considered illegal and will be removed without notice.

The enforcement will be carried out in four phases — beginning with the immediate clearance of illegal structures in Security Zones, followed by the registration of existing temporary structures, the identification of designated trading areas, and the allocation of spaces through a transparent auction system.

The Assembly emphasised that the exercise is in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925), and the TMA Bye-Laws (2018 & 2019), which empower it to regulate development and ensure public safety.

TMA officials clarified that the campaign is not an eviction exercise but a targeted effort to promote fairness and order. Traders operating outside restricted areas will be registered and considered under a forthcoming regularisation programme.

The Assembly urged residents to cooperate with the initiative, refrain from erecting new illegal structures, and report unauthorised developments to the authorities.

“This is about safety, fairness, and order,” the statement stressed. “Security zones and post–July 21 structures must be cleared immediately, but other traders will benefit from a transparent regularisation plan.”

The Tema Facelift Campaign ultimately seeks to make Tema a safer, more organised, and business-friendly city while protecting the livelihoods of law-abiding traders.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana Beauty Awards (GBA) organized by Make-Up Ghana, Gomashie praised the event as a credible platform that continues to celebrate excellence, innovation, and resilience within Ghana’s beauty, fashion and wellness sectors.

She extended greetings from President John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing that his administration remains committed to strengthening the creative and tourism ecosystem.

“The creative and tourism sectors remain vital engines for national renewal and progress,” she said. “The fact that I’m Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts reflect our belief in the sector’s power to drive change.”

The minister commended the event’s theme, “Thrive,” as a call for resilience and growth, urging beauty professionals to build ethical, sustainable, and globally competitive brands that embody Ghanaian creativity.

She cited the global beauty industry’s worth of over $700 billion, highlighting its role as a source of “livelihood, dignity, and empowerment for thousands of young people.”

Gomashie also reaffirmed her Ministry’s dedication to the Black Star Experience strategic framework, designed to position Ghana as a leading African lifestyle and cultural destination.

“It is not an event; it is a lifestyle, a change of mind, and an acceptance of who we are as Africans,” she said.

Also addressing the ceremony, George Opare Addo, Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, called for stronger public-private collaboration to bridge the gap between raw talent and real opportunity.

He noted that Ghana’s creative economy contributes significantly to GDP and holds vast export potential.

The 2025 Ghana Beauty Awards, held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, celebrated excellence across makeup artistry, skincare, hair, fashion, education and innovation.

The event, powered by Labadi Beach Hotel, Feel Naturals, Marie Noelle Spa & Salon and other partners, featured musical and comedy performances alongside Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Top winners received prizes including an all-expense-paid trip to Barbados and the 2026 GRAMMYs, underscoring the event’s growing international recognition.

The Ghana Beauty Awards continues to serve as a catalyst for professionalism and innovation in Ghana’s beauty and creative industries, reinforcing the nation’s position as a creative powerhouse in Africa.

A devastating accident has occurred at Atwedie near Konongo on the Kumasi–Accra Highway, leaving five people feared dead and eleven others severely injured.

The accident involved a Sprinter bus with registration number GR 6626-22, which rammed into a stationary tipper truck on the highway.

Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 25, 2025.

According to them, the incident happened when the Sprinter bus was negotiating a curve and suddenly came upon the parked tipper truck, but was unable to avoid a collision, resulting in the fatal impact.

A witness at the scene, speaking to OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng, described the harrowing details of the accident.

“Two passengers who were seated at the front were trapped in the vehicle following the accident. It took fire officers about two hours to rescue them,” the witness said.

“Although the deaths have not been confirmed by experts, I am afraid the five I saw may not survive.”

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) played a crucial role in rescuing passengers trapped in the wreckage.

The victims have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while security officials were at the scene controlling traffic at the time of filing this report.

Uganda prisons chief decries rising number of female inmates

0

Uganda Prisons Service has raised concern over the growing number of female inmates Uganda Prisons Service has raised concern over the growing number of female inmates

The Uganda Prisons Service has raised concern over the growing number of female inmates, warning that the increase is worsening congestion and undermining rehabilitation efforts across the country.

Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons and Director of Correctional Services Milton Tiyo said the trend was worrying, especially because many women end up in jail over offences linked to domestic violence and financial distress.

Speaking at the Law Development Centre (LDC) during the 25th anniversary of the Legal Aid Clinic, Mr Tiyo said the current female prison population stands at 3,851, including 1,897 convicts, 1,789 on remand, and 165 judgment debtors — women jailed for failure to repay debts.

“The number is increasing. Please take a lot of interest in these ladies, even those charged with capital offences,” Tiyo said, adding: “In most cases, murder arises from domestic violence.”

He revealed that Uganda’s total prison population currently stands at 78,133 inmates, slightly down from 80,000 two months ago.

“I have 42,257 convicts, which makes 54.1 percent, and 35,274 on remand, which makes 45.1 percent,” he said.

He added: “The remand population is better for us because we actually have space for convicts; the congestion is in towns and cities.”

Mr Tiyo noted that there are also 597 judgment debtors and three children living in prisons with their mothers.

He said congestion and staff shortages make it difficult to properly rehabilitate prisoners.

“Ideally, we should have one staff member for three prisoners, but we now have one for around seven or eight,” he said.

“Though we have reduced the rate, with this number, we cannot afford proper rehabilitation,” he added.

During the weekend, Mr Tiyo urged the Legal Aid Clinic to help reduce the number of remand prisoners and push for reforms on jailing debtors.

“Judgment debtors, who are about 600, are a whole prison like an upper prison. Somebody has failed to pay you—how do you expect him or her to pay when in prison? Why not let them stay outside and work so that they pay you rather than us keeping them?” he said.

Justice Eva Luswata of the Legal Aid Clinic Advisory Board said the clinic faces funding and logistical challenges, including supervision, case load pressure, and technology gaps.

“We have geographic and inclusion barriers, and we need interpreters, disability access, and better language coverage to serve poor communities,” she said.

Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka pledged continued government support to the Legal Aid Clinic to strengthen its operations and improve access to justice.

Ghana has lost a great role model for women — Ofosu-Ampofo mourns Nana Konadu

0

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Policy Adviser for Political Affairs at the Office of the Vice President, has eulogised the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as an enduring symbol of women’s empowerment and political leadership in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with Stephen Kwaku Darku on Channel One TV’s Volunteers show on Sunday, October 26, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo praised the former First Lady for her lifelong dedication to advancing the status of women in Ghana.

He noted that through her leadership and advocacy — particularly with the 31st December Women’s Movement — Nana Konadu opened doors for generations of women to participate in leadership and public service.

“We have lost a great role model for women of this country, especially those who are in the field of politics and public service,” he said.
“Because she represented the height of what you could get in terms of women’s activism. She has left an indelible mark when it comes to women’s participation in governance. We need to salute her. Her name will be written in gold any time we talk about women in politics. She played her role very well when talking about former First Ladies.”

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo added that her legacy would continue to inspire ongoing efforts toward gender equality and empowerment across the country.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. She served as Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, spanning both military and civilian administrations, and was widely celebrated for her advocacy for women’s rights, child welfare, and social progress.

”If you live in a country where help is needed and you don’t help, you are a stupid man. You can’t be the richest man in the cemetery. You will die and leave one day. So let’s try and work together, put all our differences aside.”

“It doesn’t matter; we will always have one president and one MP at a time; we can’t have two. People have come and gone, and people will come and go. We will all go. So, the little time that we have, let’s love one another and work together. It doesn’t matter who is President,”

GPL 2025/26: Medeama beat All Blacks to go top of the table

0

Medeama returned to the summit of the Ghana Premier League with a narrow 1-0 victory over Swedru All Blacks at the TNA Stadium in Tarkwa on Sunday.

The former champions, who had stumbled at home against Samartex in their previous fixture, got back on track thanks to a second-half strike from Kamaradini Mamudu.

Mamudu broke the deadlock in the 70th minute with a well-taken finish that settled the nerves of the home supporters and put Medeama firmly in control.

From then on, the Mauves and Yellows managed the game efficiently, keeping All Blacks at bay and seeing out the result with disciplined defending.

Despite dominating possession for much of the contest, Medeama were unable to extend their lead, though All Blacks rarely looked capable of mounting a comeback.

The win restores Medeama’s three-point advantage at the top of the table as they prepare to visit Hohoe United in their next outing.

Swedru All Blacks, who sit 13th with six points after the defeat, will look to bounce back when they host Heart of Lions.

Ghana’s oil output revenues fall as new investments dry up

Ghana has not been able to attract new investments in its upstream petroleum industry, the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has stated.

Presenting highlights of the 2025 Semi-annual Report to journalists via Zoom on Wednesday October 22, 2025 in Accra, Richard Kojo Ellimah, Chair of PIAC’s Technical Sub-committee, said “Ghana is not attracting new investments in its upstream petroleum industry, to the extent that no new Petroleum Agreement has been signed since 2018.”

The oversight body, established under the Petroleum Revenue Management Act (PMRA), said the lack of investor interest coincides with a sharp drop in oil production.

Crude output, according to the report, fell by 25.9 per cent—from 24.86 million barrels in the first half of 2024 to 18.42 million barrels in the same period of 2025.

“The Committee reiterates its call on the government, as a matter of urgency, to ensure that the Ministry of Energy and its allied agencies increase efforts to arrest the decline in crude oil production and secure investments into Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry,” he said.

The fall in output contributed to a steep decline in petroleum revenue, which dropped by 56 per cent—from US$840.8 million in the first half of 2024 to US$370.3 million in the same period this year.

The report attributed the shortfall mainly to lower crude production and weaker international prices, which averaged US$74.93 per barrel compared with US$86.12 a year earlier.

The report also noted that there was no lifting by the Ghana Group on the Tweneboa-Enyenra-Ntomme (TEN) Field during the review period, further constraining government receipts.

Ellimah said the situation called for stronger policy direction to restore investor confidence.

“Without new exploration and production activity, Ghana’s petroleum reserves and revenues will continue to dwindle, undermining our ability to finance development,” he said.

Since the discovery of oil in commercial quantities in 2007, Ghana has relied heavily on petroleum receipts to fund priority infrastructure and social projects through the Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA).

Cumulative revenue from petroleum activities since 2011 now stands at US$11.58 billion, according to the report.

He urged the government to prioritise reforms aimed at attracting private capital and technological expertise to reverse the downward trend.

The report further recommended that the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) be adequately resourced and its establishing law reviewed “so that the Corporation will be better positioned to offer leadership in the exploitation of Ghana’s petroleum resources.”

PIAC called on authorities to strengthen collaboration between the Ghana Revenue Authority, Petroleum Commission, Bank of Ghana, and the Ministry of Energy to recover outstanding surface rental arrears, which rose to US$2.82 million by the end of June 2025.

Despite the challenges, PIAC commended the government for channelling ABFA spending solely into infrastructure development, describing it as a step towards better value for money.

“The Committee remains committed to safeguarding Ghana’s petroleum revenues and ensuring transparency in their use,” Ellimah said, urging policymakers to act swiftly “to restore investor confidence and sustain petroleum production for the benefit of present and future generations.”

How ‘stolen’ State cash wins footsoldiers’ loyalty in NPP politics

When politicians fall from grace, it is often not their accumulated wealth, lofty titles, or long years of service that sustain them, but the people who rally to their defence.

Yet in Ghana’s political culture, especially within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), solidarity in times of scandal appears to depend less on integrity and more on who benefited from one’s generosity sponsored by state largesse while in power.

As the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary race gains momentum, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stepped up his campaign with a visit to the Bono Region, where he met with delegates in the Berekum East Constituency.

The NPP Constituency Chairman, Kwaku Kamkam, assured that delegates have learned from their past decision and will vote overwhelmingly in favour of the Vice President.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Bawumia urged delegates to stand firm behind him and disregard rumours questioning his competence and performance.

He dismissed claims, labelling him the “worst performing flagbearer” in the 2024 elections, describing such statements as false and baseless.

Dr Bawumia argued that, historically, his 41 percent performance in the last national elections makes him the best-performing NPP presidential candidate, citing comparisons from the eras of Professor Adu Boahen and President John Agyekum Kufuor.

He accused his detractors of spreading misinformation due to fear of his strong standing within the party.

He reiterated his commitment to continuity, unity, and private sector–driven development, stressing that partnerships with private investors will help bridge infrastructure gaps while government focuses on connecting communities.

Dr. Bawumia again positioned himself as a unifier, promising to strengthen party cohesion ahead of the 2028 general elections. The Ahafo visit forms part of his nationwide campaign to consolidate grassroots support.

Bawumia confident of 90% delegate support in Tano North

0

Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says he is confident of securing overwhelming support from delegates in the Tano North Constituency in the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.

Dr Bawumia, who is touring the Ahafo Region as part of his campaign, said he expects at least 90 per cent of votes in the constituency, building on the 84 per cent endorsement he received during the 2023 contest.

The former Vice President made the remarks during an engagement with delegates on the first day of his regional tour, which also covered the Tano South and Asutifi North constituencies.

He thanked party members for their continued loyalty, describing Tano North’s support as a testament to his enduring relationship with the grassroots.

“I’m home — thank you so much for your support in 2023. I’m pleading with you to give me 90% of your votes, just as you did in the past. I will not let you down when I become President,” he said.

22-year-old Indian woman k!lled by her mother and brother for rejecting arranged marriage

22-year-old Indian woman k!lled by her mother and brother for rejecting arranged marriage

A 22-year-old Indian woman, Parul Sarviya, was allegedly k!lled by her 65-year-old mother and brother for rejecting an arranged marriage.

The gruesome m8rder occurred in Ghogha taluka village of Bhavnagar district in Gujarat.

The victim was m8rdered because she was adamant about marrying the man she loved, defying her family’s wishes.

Police said the accused, Prakash and his mother Daya, were determined to marry Parul off to a man who agreed to a bride-swap arrangement.

This practice, which is followed in some rural pockets of Gujarat struggling with a skewed s3x ratio, allows a man to marry only if his sister is simultaneously offered as a bride.

A year ago, Prakash allegedly caught Parul chatting with her lover on Instagram. Since then, he and Daya repeatedly rebuked her, warning her to end the relationship.

However, Parul remained firm and reportedly told them she would elope if they refused her marriage proposal.

On October 18, an argument broke out at their home in Bikda village, where the family worked as agricultural labourers.

Enraged, Prakash, who is a truck driver, allegedly st@bbed Parul multiple times while Daya held her.

The two then hid the body near a well and later that night dumped it in an empty check dam.

Daya allegedly wore Parul’s clothes to avoid blood stains and later washed the blood-stained garments to destroy evidence.

Parul’s father, Himant Sarviya, who was unaware of the crime, told police that Prakash informed him that Parul went to relieve herself near the check dam and didn’t return.

The next evening, October 19, a passerby discovered a decomposed body near the check dam. Police later confirmed it was Parul.

The post-mortem report confirmed murder, and police began probing the case.

After gathering forensic and circumstantial evidence, including the m3rder weapon, police arrested Daya and Prakash on October 22.

A complaint was lodged at Vartej police station under BNS sections 103(1), 238(a), and 54.

GPL 25/26: Gold Stars hold Hearts in Accra

0

Accra Hearts of Oak and Bibiani Gold Stars played out a pulsating 2-2 draw in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

Hearts took the lead on the cusp of half-time when Gideon Anaba turned Mawuli Wayo’s cross into his own net.

The goal was no more than Hearts deserved after creating a ton of chances.

Mawuli Wayo missed two opportunities in the opening half hour, Hamza Issah missed an open goal from three yards, before Rocky Dwamena also blasted an effort over the bar from just inside the penalty area.

The Phobians were punished for their woeful finishing when Samuel Atta Kumi produced a quick-fire double in the second half to level matters and put Gold Stars in front.

Kumi’s first was an opportunistic finish from just inside the area after Kelvin Osei-Asibey and David Baba Adamu had failed to clear the ball.

His second was a composed, first-time effort, curled past Benjamin Asare against the run of play.

The brace of goals against Accra Hearts of Oak means Atta Kumi has now scored six goals in seven league matches and is the competition’s top scorer.

Sunday’s match was the first time the Phobians had conceded a goal in seven games in the Ghana Premier League this season.

Hearts have now failed to win three of their four home matches, having drawn three and won one. In all, Hearts have drawn four of their opening seven matches this season.

Defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars are now in fIfth place with 13 points, just three fewer than league leaders Medeama S.C.

Hearts of Oak are also on 13 points but in sixth place, having scored only six goals in seven matches.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring and rehabilitating lands destroyed by illegal mining activities, otherwise known as galamsey.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, she made the remarks at the launch of a 2,000-hectare pilot reclamation project at Gyaman Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.

She underscored the government’s determination to reverse environmental destruction and revive degraded ecosystems

“The reclamation project we’re launching today is a step toward healing the land, restoring livelihoods, and rebuilding hope,” she stated.

Prof Klutse said the initiative falls in line with the EPA’s core mandate to protect, manage, and enhance the country’s environment while promoting sustainable growth.

“This is a national initiative focused on reclaiming degraded lands and rehabilitating ecosystems destroyed by mining and other unsustainable human activities,” she remarked.

Under the EcoReclaim Project, degraded areas will be surveyed, mapped, and restored using advanced ecological engineering methods, including topsoil replenishment, slope stabilization, and the planting of indigenous tree species with phyto-remediation properties, capable of removing heavy metals and improving soil fertility.

NSMQ 2025: Prempeh College secures seeded spot after flawless display

0

Prempeh College has once again proven why they remain one of the fiercest contenders in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), after securing a commanding victory in their contest against Benkum SHS and Suhum SHS.

The four-time champions dominated every round of the competition, finishing with an impressive 62 points — the highest score recorded so far in the day’s contests. Suhum SHS put up a spirited fight but could only manage 37 points, while Benkum SHS ended with 13 points.

From the first bell, it was clear Prempeh had come prepared. Their precision, speed, and teamwork kept the audience cheering through all five rounds. By the end of round one, they had already built a strong lead — one they refused to relinquish.

Their most remarkable feat came during the Problem of the Day, where they scored a perfect 10 out of 10, drawing loud applause from the audience at the Cape Coast auditorium.

With this win, Prempeh College not only maintains their seeded status but also sends a bold message to other contenders eyeing the championship trophy — the Amanfuo are here to conquer once again.

The energy, confidence, and composure displayed by the team reminded many of the Prempeh College that lifted the NSMQ trophy in 2021. As they advance to the one-eighth stage, one thing is certain — they’re not just competing; they’re dominating.

Veep outlines Ghana’s agricultural vision under 24-Hour Economy policy

Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is the Vice President of Ghana Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is the Vice President of Ghana

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has underscored Ghana’s determination to transform agriculture through President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour economy vision.

She has called for innovation, inclusion, and strategic investment to achieve food security in Africa and transform the continent into a net exporter of food.

Sharing insights from the recent ‘Norman E Borlaug International Dialogue’ in the US on her X page, she reaffirmed that agriculture remains central to Ghana’s development agenda.

24-Hour Economy is a business revolution, not just extended working hours – Mahama

“Nearly two out of every five Ghanaians work in agriculture, but the sector faces persistent challenges. Ghana spends more than USD 2 billion annually importing food we have the climate and capacity to produce. This must change.

“His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s bold vision for agricultural transformation is centered on the Feed Ghana Programme, which is a coordinated, market-driven initiative spanning 22 commodity value chains, including grains & legumes, vegetables, starchy staples, tree crops and livestock. It is designed to tackle systemic weaknesses in irrigation, storage and processing, digital integration, cooperative development and market access,” she wrote.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang also touched on the Grow24 Programme, a key component of the 24-hour economy policy.

24-Hour economy crucial for Ghana’s Post-IMF growth – Economist

“As part of the 24-Hour Economy, Grow24 seeks to modernize agriculture and value chains, support agro-manufacturing, and drive export-ready agribusiness. Ghana is also implementing a five-year Agricultural Risk Management Strategy focusing on poultry, tomatoes and maize in selected regions”, she noted.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang noted that women make up more than half of Ghana’s agricultural workforce yet face barriers to land, credit, technology, and training.

“Our Women’s Development Bank will help correct these inequities,” she assured, adding that investments in youth-led agritech, mechanisation services, and digital market platforms are also underway”, she stated.

The vice president further emphasised that Ghana is shifting from exporting raw materials to producing finished goods that capture real value.

“With AfCFTA headquartered in Accra, we are positioned to build regional value chains, scale agro-exports, and empower youth and women across borders,” she added.

The 24-Hour Economy policy is the government’s flagship programme. It is expected to create jobs and employment opportunities for Ghanaians.

4 Reasons why the Bill may threaten, not safeguard Ghana’s digital space

0

The Cybersecurity Authority has come under intense criticism in recent days over the amended Cybersecurity Act, 1038. From attempts to gain sweeping control over Ghana’s cyberspace to the controversial 30% levy on industry players, the new amendment raises serious concerns. Here are four reasons why I believe that, rather than protecting it, the amended bill poses a significant threat to Ghana’s digital security landscape.

1. Enables unhealthy State Control Over Ghana’s Digital and cybersecurity Space

While Section 4A of the Cybersecurity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 is presented as a mechanism to strengthen Ghana’s digital safety, its broad and unchecked scope could easily be used as a tool for state control over communication and innovation. Clause 4A(b) empowers the Authority to “establish standards for certifying the security of innovative products, Artificial Intelligence, cloud technology, quantum computing, big data, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain-based technology and any other emerging technologies.” This provision, while seemingly protective, gives the Authority sweeping power to determine what qualifies as “secure” or “compliant.” Without clear oversight, this could lead to bureaucratic or political gatekeeping, where startups, innovators, or tech companies are prevented from deploying digital products or communication tools unless they receive government approval. Such a requirement could slow technological progress and create a chilling effect on innovation, as developers might fear that politically sensitive or disruptive technologies will be denied certification.

Clause 4A(d) also  authorizes the Authority to “accredit the cybersecurity establishments of critical information infrastructure owners, cybersecurity service providers, cybersecurity practitioners and professionals and other relevant persons or institutions.” This mandatory accreditation regime places nearly all digital actors including cybersecurity professionals, innovators, and even non-profit tech bodies under Clause 4A(e) thus under the Authority’s control. In practice, this could be used to restrict dissenting voices, limit the operations of independent digital advocacy groups, or revoke the licenses of practitioners who criticize government digital policies. This combined with 4A(a), which allows the Authority to “investigate and on the authority of the Attorney-General, prosecute cybercrime,”  poses a potential threat to digital freedom and an open, innovative internet ecosystem in Ghana.

2. A self-financing system that can incentivize abuse of power

Section 31 of Act 1038 as amended seeks to strengthen the Communications Fund through multiple revenue streams, including “12% of the communications service tax” and “9% corporate tax for the Fund per annum,” however, its undefined scope raises serious concerns about state overreach and potential misuse. The provision grants the Authority vast discretion to impose “a charge determined by the Authority in accordance with the Fees and Charges Act… and levied on persons licensed by the Bank of Ghana,” as well as to claim “a proportion of the fees charged on all government electronic services.” Such open-ended powers could be weaponized to impose heavy financial obligations on digital service providers, start-ups, and fintech firms effectively stifling innovation, deterring investment, and creating an uneven digital economy controlled by the state.

The inclusion of “50% of all fines arising from criminal penalties under the Act” could incentivize excessive enforcement and punitive measures against dissenting voices or non-compliant digital platforms. Instead of serving its stated goal of safeguarding communications and cyber infrastructure, the amendment could transform the Fund into a tool for policy manipulation, granting the state leverage over communication networks, online services, and financial technology players under the guise of funding digital development.

3. A tool that could cripple the growth of Ghana’s cybersecurity industry

Section 57C(4) of the Cybersecurity Act explicitly states that “30% of the revenue generated by a certified cybersecurity professional or practitioner or cybersecurity service provider under the scheme shall be paid into the Cybersecurity Fund.” This clause alone poses a serious threat to the sustainability of Ghana’s cybersecurity industry. By demanding a 30% cut of total revenue, the provision drains financial resources directly from service providers, regardless of their operational costs or profitability. For small and medium-sized cybersecurity firms that already struggle with high certification fees, compliance expenses, and limited market access, this could make business operations nearly impossible. The policy disincentivizes innovation and competitiveness, as firms would have little capital left to reinvest in technology, talent, or expansion. In essence, while framed as a contribution to national cybersecurity development, Section 57C (4) functions more like a state-imposed levy that cripples private growth.

4. Empowers the CSA with Dangerous Police Powers That Threaten Digital Freedom

Section 20B of the amended Cybersecurity Act grants the Director-General, Deputy Director-General, and other authorised officers of the Cyber Security Authoritythe powers of a Police Officer, including the powers of arrest, search and seizure,” along with “the same rights, protections, and immunities conferred on a Police officer under Act 30 and Act 350.” While this amendment is framed as a measure to strengthen enforcement in Ghana’s digital space, it poses a greater threat to civil liberties and digital freedom than it offers protection. By equipping a regulatory agency with full police powers, the line between cybersecurity regulation and criminal law enforcement becomes dangerously blurred.

In effect, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) originally designed to provide technical oversight and promote digital safety could now act as an armed enforcement body capable of conducting arrests, searches, and seizures without traditional police oversight. This risks fostering abuse of power, intimidation of critics, and the suppression of online dissent under the pretext of “cybersecurity enforcement.” The inclusion of “rights, protections and immunities” means CSA officers could operate with near-total legal protection from accountability, allowing them to target individuals or organizations arbitrarily. Instead of sanitizing the digital environment, Section 20B could create a surveillance-heavy, fear-driven cyberspace, where innovation, privacy, and free expression could easily be undermined by overreach and politicized enforcement.

All public universities renamed under Akufo-Addo to revert to original names

0

Cabinet has directed that all public universities renamed under the Akufo-Addo administration revert to their original names, according to the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Bawku Central MP announced that a bill will soon be laid before the House to formalise the reversal.

“Mr Speaker, there has been a Cabinet directive to change the names of all the universities that were renamed after individuals back to the original names they were given,” Mr. Ayariga said.

He added:

“A bill will be brought to this House to change and reverse all the name changes of the universities.”

During the Akufo-Addo administration, several public universities and polytechnics were renamed to honour notable national figures. These included:

  • University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, renamed George Grant University of Mines and Technology;

  • Wa Campus of UDS, renamed Simon Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies;

  • Navrongo Campus of UDS, renamed C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences; and

  • Ho Technical University, renamed Ephraim Amu Technical University.

The renaming exercise drew criticism from the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which argued that the move was politically motivated and lacked broad national consultation.
