0

James Agalga, Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee James Agalga, Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee

The Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga, is optimistic that peace will soon prevail at Bawku, as he disclosed that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has met the two sides involved the conflict as a way of resolving their dispute.

He indicated that the Ashanti king has made considerable progress in efforts to resolve the longstanding Bawku conflict.

He made the disclosure during a discussion on JoyNews’ Newsfile on April 12, 2025.

According to him, Asantehene’s involvement in the matter is a crucial step towards achieving reconciliation to foster a long-term stability in the region.

“So, I can reveal that Otumfuo has done some work on the Bawku crisis, and has met the two sides,” Agalga stated.

James Agalga called on the people of Bawku to cooperate with the peace process aimed at finding a lasting solution.

“I can only appeal to them to allow the peace process to proceed,” he said.

Agalga’s comments come in the wake of heightened tensions at Bawku, in the Upper East Region, where violent clashes have strained security efforts.

His appeal adds to other discerning voices urging restraint and cooperation from residents, as key traditional and political stakeholders work behind the scenes to broker peace.

GIADEC needs $4 billion for expansion of aluminium value chain for industrial development

0

The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) will require about four billion dollars to expand its operations in bauxite mining, aluminium smelting, as well as refining alumina in the country.

Mr Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, the Chief Executive Officer of GIADEC, made this known in a media interview when Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, paid a working visit to the company in Accra on Thursday.

Mr Ankrah said, for instance, the Company needed $800 million to expand the operations of VALCO, $1.5 billion for railway and ports expansion and $250 million for mining of bauxite.

The CEO of GIADEC said that although some investors had expressed a desire to invest in the aluminum value chain, they are yet to make a firm commitment to put money into it.

He was of the belief that investment in GIADEC’s operations would be a game-changer towards enhancing the aluminum downstream businesses.

Mr Ankrah stated that Ghana’s bauxite ore was of high quality and investing into its exploration and mining would bolster the country’s economy and create job opportunities for the Ghanaian youth.

Earlier, Mr Buah, the sector minister, engaged the management and staff of GIADEC and shared President John Mahama’s vision to reset the nation and industrialise through the aluminum industry.

He believed that expanding the aluminum industry required a multi-sectoral approach involving the transport and energy ministries to improve the supply of electricity, fuel, and gas to power the factories.

The Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation was established through an Act of Parliament, 2018 (Act 976) to promote and develop a globally competitive integrated aluminum industry in Ghana.

GIADEC is the holding company for all government investments and interests in their integrated aluminum industry.

The companies under GIADEC are VALCO and Ghana Bauxite Company, and the mining rights to Ghana’s bauxite reserves.

Former Hearts of Oak and Black Stars striker, Prince Tagoe, has extended a helping hand to the residents of Madina, donating food items and other essential supplies to support families in need.

Known for his philanthropic work, this gesture is part of his commitment to giving back to the community that shaped his early years.

Gabon votes in first presidential election since the 2023 coup

People wait to cast their votes on Saturday outside a school used as a polling station People wait to cast their votes on Saturday outside a school used as a polling station

Voters in Gabon are casting their ballots in the presidential election, as military leader Brice Oligui Nguema looks to cement his grip on power in the first election since he led the 2023 coup.

Polls opened in the country at 7am (06:00 GMT) on Saturday, with reports of thousands of people queueing outside polling stations across Libreville, the seaside capital. Voting will be held in the country’s nine provinces until 6pm local time (17:00 GMT). Results are expected to be announced within two weeks of the vote.

Nearly one million people, including some 28,000 overseas, are registered to vote in this oil-rich but poor African nation of 2.3 million people.

Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem, reporting from Libreville, said that voters are looking forward to casting their ballots, but are “stuck between hope and fear”.

Nguema, who had been instrumental in ending 55 years of iron-fisted dynastic rule of the Bongo family led by former leader Ali Bongo, has been leading in opinion polls. Bongo family members were accused of looting Gabon’s wealth.

Aurele Ossantanga Mouila, 30, voted for the first time ever after finishing his shift as a croupier in a casino.

“I did not have confidence in the earlier regime,” he said.

Nguema took the role of transitional president while overseeing the formation of a government that includes civilians, tasked with drawing up a new constitution after the 2023 coup.

The country is heading to the polls at a time of high unemployment, regular power and water shortages, a lack of infrastructure and heavy government debt.

Nguema ditched his military uniform as he campaigned for a seven-year term against seven rivals, including Alain-Claude Bilie By Nze, who served as prime minister under Ali Bongo before the coup.

He has predicted a “historic victory” in the election.

“The builder is here, the special candidate, the one you called,” Nguema said on Thursday among the music and dancing at his closing rally in the capital, Libreville.

But critics accuse Nguema, who had promised to hand power back to civilians, of failing to move on from the years of plunder of the country’s vast mineral wealth under the Bongos, under whom he served for years.

Bilie By Nze, Nguema’s main opponent, has cast himself as the candidate for a “complete rupture”.

“In reality, it’s an election of total change. It’s a challenge and we are at a crossroads,” he told Al Jazeera.

He has accused Nguema, who led the Republican Guard in the Bongo years, of representing a continuity of the old system.

Nguema served as former aide-de-camp to Omar Bongo before becoming chief of the presidential guard under his son Ali Bongo.

Whoever wins will have to meet the high hopes of a country where one in three people lives below the poverty line despite its vast resource wealth, according to the World Bank.

Gabon’s debt rose to 73.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) last year and is projected to reach 80 percent this year.

US excludes smartphones, computers from Trump’s reciprocal tariffs

0

The Trump administration has granted tariff exclusions for smartphones, computers and other electronics imports supplied largely by China, sparing them from much of President Donald Trump’s steep 125% duties.

In a notice to shippers, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency published a list of tariff codes that will be excluded from the duties. The exclusions are retroactive to 12:01 a.m. on April 5.

The U.S. CBP listed 20 product categories, including the very broad 8471 code for all computers, laptops, disc drives and automatic data processing. It also included semiconductor devices, equipment, memory chips and flat panel displays.

The notice did not provide an explanation for the Trump administration’s move, but the late-night exclusion provides welcome relief to major U.S. technology firms, including Apple (AAPL.O), Dell Technologies and countless other importers.

White House officials did not immediately reply to a request for comment on why the latest tariff exemptions had been made.

But the exemptions suggest an increasing awareness within the Trump administration of the pain that his tariffs had in store for consumers, especially on popular products such as smartphones, laptops and other electronics.

Trump ran for re-election last year largely on a promise to bring down prices that, fueled by inflation from the pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine, had rocketed and tarnished the economic reputation of President Joe Biden and his Democratic allies.

But Trump also promised as a candidate to impose the tariffs that have become a central part of his economic agenda, and the president has dismissed the turbulence in financial markets and expected price increases arising from the levies as a disturbance that was a necessary part of realigning the global economy and world trading order with his vision.

His so-called “reciprocal tariffs”, however, raised fears of a U.S. recession and drew criticism from his fellow Republicans, who do not want to lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate in next year’s midterm elections to Democrats, who have sharply attacked Trump’s policies.

Trump, who is spending the weekend at his residence in Florida, told reporters on Friday he was comfortable with the high tariffs on China but respected President Xi Jinping and believed something good would come out of the trade conflict between them.

Bawku crisis poses national security threats to West Africa

0

The AIGS is concerned that if the Bawku crisis is not curtailed, it could affect West Africa The AIGS is concerned that if the Bawku crisis is not curtailed, it could affect West Africa

The Africa Institute on Governance and Security (AIGS) has condemned the resurgence of the conflict in Bawku, calling on the government to address the matter swiftly.

The conflict, which has claimed lives, destroyed properties and continues to pose great risks to the livelihoods of the people, has become a matter of urgency and national security.

The group said the escalating crisis in the Upper East Region requires urgent attention and the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to resolve it.

The recent violence claimed eight lives in October 2024 due to the long-standing ethno-political dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

In a press release made available to GhanaWeb, the group said, “In this pluralised ethnocentric political landscape, we call upon the youth of Bawku to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions that could further inflame tensions.

“The youth are the future of our nation, and their energy must be channeled toward building peace, not perpetuating conflict. We urge them to resist being exploited by divisive forces and instead become ambassadors of reconciliation and unity in their communities,” parts of the statement read.

The AIGS also urged the government to take immediate and decisive steps to restore peace and strengthen security in the Bawku region.

They listed their recommendations as follows:1. Enhancing Security Measures: Deploy adequate security forces to maintain law and order, protect lives, and prevent further violence, while ensuring that these forces operate with professionalism and respect for human rights.

2. Supporting Mediation Efforts: Provide full logistical and political support to the ongoing mediation process led by His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, which is set to resume next week. The government must work closely with traditional leaders, civil society, and all stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative.

3. Addressing Root Causes: Invest in long-term solutions by addressing the underlying issues of chieftaincy disputes, land ownership, and economic marginalization in the region. This includes promoting inclusive dialogue and equitable development to reduce ethnic tensions.

4. Economic Empowerment for Youth: Implement programs to support the youth of Bawku, whose livelihoods — such as commercial motorcycle operations — have been severely impacted by curfews and insecurity. Economic opportunities can deter youth involvement in violence and foster stability.

AIGS further said it is prudent to address the issue swiftly since this is not merely a regional issue but a national security concern with the potential to destabilise Ghana and the broader West African subregion, especially given its proximity to conflict zones in Burkina Faso.

The AIGS commended the efforts of traditional leaders, particularly Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for mediating in the crisis, an act that has shown promise in resolving similar conflicts, such as the Dagbon crisis.

They also acknowledged President John Mahama’s commitment to supporting the process, even though they insist that more needs to be done to ensure that peace is not only restored but also sustained.

“We call on all Ghanaians — across ethnic, political, and regional lines — to stand together in solidarity for peace. The Africa Institute on Governance and Security remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote good governance, security, and inclusive development across the continent.

“Let us work collectively to ensure that Bawku, and indeed all of Ghana, remains a place of harmony and progress for all its citizens,” they concluded.

How 10% tariff imposed by Trump could affect cocoa exports, remittances

0

Cocoa is one of Ghana's largest exports Cocoa is one of Ghana’s largest exports

The President of the Association of Ghana Industries, Dr Humphrey Ayim-Darke, has bemoaned the probable risks associated with the 10% tariff imposed by the US in relation to Ghana’s cocoa exports.

According to him, a chunk of Ghana’s revenue is derived from cocoa; therefore, a hit could be a challenge.

He said the government must account for the deep interconnections between cocoa exports, import-based revenue, and Ghana’s overall fiscal health.

“If you look into the domestic revenue mobilisation, about 50 plus percent — just about 50 — comes from the ports, and these are largely imports. And then from export as well, which includes cocoa. Unfortunately, we know we had a cocoa drop by virtue of the events of the galamsey and the cocoa export,” he was quoted to have said by myjoyonline.com.

If government revenue should take a hit by external factors, he said; “It has a ripple effect on the macro… If you’re not getting enough domestic build, you slap more monetary policies on us.

“It will trigger the policy rate, lending rates. The cycle continues, and it has a consequential effect on the US Dollar as well, which is our medium of trading.”

While Ghana has been slapped with a 10% tariff by the US, its neighboring country, Cote d’Ivoire, has been slapped with 14%.

The AGI president said this calls for a collaboration between the two countries to secure their cocoa exports.

“We are also concerned about the disparity between the tariff on Ghana and Ivory Coast, where we are together seeking to harmonise our total cocoa export and the benefits to the farmers. Today, you are happy, but the next time, it will all catch up with you. You cannot look at this in isolation… We need to be concerned with looking at the macro picture and the micro picture,” he said.

Dr Ayim-Darke also lamented the effects of US inflation on inward remittances.

“Remittances have become part of our inflows. If the inflationary rate hits the U.S. by virtue of the tariffs and chocolate prices going up, and the consumers’ disposable income is reduced, how much remittance will come to your family? That will affect government, too,” he added.

The time when some Ghanaians held a protest in London over Nkrumah’s ‘dictatorship’

0

The group gathered outside Marlborough House in London’s Pall Mall The group gathered outside Marlborough House in London’s Pall Mall

In July 1965, a group of sharply-dressed protesters, many holding placards, gathered outside Marlborough House in London’s Pall Mall during the Commonwealth Prime Ministers Conference.

Their target; Ghana’s then president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who was once hailed as a hero of African independence before being accused of betraying democracy.

A black-and-white photograph shared on YouTube by Nigerian lawyer, Adeyinka Makinde captures the tense moment, with the demonstrators, dressed in suits, raising signs that read “Ghana is a Prison” and “Free the Judges.”

What Sparked the Protest?

Barely a year after assuming office, Dr Nkrumah, Ghana’s first post-independence leader, was accused of increasingly centralising power and silencing dissent through the Preventative Detention Act (1958), which allowed imprisonment without trial.

By 1964, Ghana became a one-party state after a heavily controlled referendum. The final straw for many was Nkrumah’s dismissal of Chief Justice Sir Arku Korsah in 1963 after he acquitted three opposition figures in a treason trial.

Judges who resisted political interference were removed, and universities faced censorship.

Exiled opponents, including former ministers, helped organise several protests in London to pressure Commonwealth leaders to isolate Nkrumah.

The Aftermath

Just eight months after that protest, in February 1966, Nkrumah was overthrown in a CIA-backed coup while visiting Vietnam. Ghana’s new military junta cited his autocratic rule as justification.

Though Nkrumah remained a Pan-African icon, his later years were marked by exile and disillusionment. Dr

Nkrumah died on April 27, 1972, in Bucharest, Romania, after a prolonged illness. He was 62 years old. Nkrumah had been in exile in Guinea following his overthrow in 1966.

I only booked him for shows — Sam Larry denies beating Mohbad

0

Sam Larry is a showbiz promoter Sam Larry is a showbiz promoter

Showbiz promoter Sam Larry has finally addressed the swirling controversy linking him to the tragic death of rising Afrobeats star, Mohbad — and he’s not holding back.

Speaking virtually at the coroner’s inquest, Sam Larry denied ever laying a finger on Mohbad, insisting that their relationship was strictly business.

“I never harassed or beat Mohbad. The only connection I had with him was giving him shows,” he said.

According to Larry, the friction between them began after he paid Mohbad ₦2 million to perform at his birthday party in Dubai — a party he claimed cost him over ₦20 million to organise.

Mohbad allegedly bailed at the last minute, and that’s when tensions flared.

“I messaged him on Instagram to refund the money, but he ignored me. I even involved my lawyer… still nothing,” Larry added.

He also addressed the now-viral Elegushi Beach incident, saying he only confronted Mohbad verbally and that it was resolved peacefully, thanks to Zlatan’s intervention. “Afterwards, we all sat down to eat.

There was no fight,” he claimed. Sam Larry did confirm that Mohbad filed a petition against him — alleging he brought thugs and weapons to the beach.

But he says the late singer never showed up for any of the police invitations to defend his claims.

And about the viral clip where he was heard saying “Won ti gbe sin” (They’ve buried him)? Sam Larry says it’s from 2013, had nothing to do with Mohbad, and was misinterpreted.

He ended his testimony by urging the court to focus on the people who were around Mohbad in the final hours before his death. “They know what really happened to him,” he said solemnly.

Grant amnesty to people carrying guns at Bawku – Charles Bissue

0

Charles Bissue is a former presidential staffer and 2024 NPP candidate for Essikado-Ketan Charles Bissue is a former presidential staffer and 2024 NPP candidate for Essikado-Ketan

A former presidential staffer, Charles Bissue, has proposed that the government grants amnesty to individuals in possession of ammunition in Bawku, as a measure to help de-escalate the ongoing conflict in the area.

Speaking on the escalating conflict at Bawku, Charles Bissue, who is also the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party for the Essikado-Ketan Constituency, elaborated on his proposal, suggesting that the government should consider offering amnesty to individuals in possession of illegal arms who are contributing to the unrest in the area.

He explained that under such an arrangement, individuals caught with illegal weapons would not face prosecution if they voluntarily surrender them.

According to Bissue, this approach could encourage people to disarm, helping to reduce tensions and prevent the already volatile situation from deteriorating further.

“I think we should go further and then grant amnesty for a period. I mean to say that if you have weapons, just surrender. Bring the weapons and we will let you go. I think that should be the starting point because we’re talking about peace. You remember Liberia when Buffalo soldier Major General Arnold Quainoo and then Samuel Kayondo were going for peace, then they said no guns but they had guns,” he stated during a panel discussion on Asaase Radio on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

Charles Bissue added that such an amnesty initiative could significantly support leaders and stakeholders in their efforts to resolve the conflict and restore peace to Bawku.

He emphasised that the objective of achieving lasting peace cannot be realised if the youth continue to bear arms and engage in violence.

“You know what I mean, so if we’re going to talk about peace and people still wield weapons in the system, I don’t think it would augur well and so, the starting point is maybe we grant amnesty that whoever has weapons within the system should bring it,” he added.

He expressed concern that the failure to address the conflict decisively could escalate the situation into a national crisis, potentially threatening the stability and peace of the entire country.

NDC promised reduced cost of living but is increasing utilities after 3 months – Boako

0

Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako

Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, has condemned the decision of the government to increase utilities.

He has questioned where the reduced cost of living they promised the Ghanaian people is if, after three months in government, they are increasing utilities.

In a post shared via social media, Dr Gideon Boako could not fathom why the NDC in power will continue to make the lives of Ghanaians bitter with increased utilities but poor services.

His post chronicled the increases of utilities between the two leading political parties drawing the attention of Ghanaians to the fact that the NPP manages the sector well and do not increase utilities as compared to the NDC.

His post read “The data I am sharing below depicts increases/reduction in electricity tariffs under the NDC (from 2009 to 2016) and NPP (from 2017 to 2024). It is instructive to note that both political regimes experienced IMF programmes in their first and second terms.

Under NDC

* 2009 – nill

* 2010 – 89% increase

* 2011 – 10% increase

* 2012 – 7.42% increase

* 2013 – 58.9% increase

* 2014 – 28.35% increase

* 2015 – 90.93% increase

* 2016 – 10% increase

Under NPP

* 2017 – nill

* 2018 – 17.5% reduction

* 2019 – 17.46% increase

* 2020 – nill

* 2021 – nill

* 2022 – nill

* 2023 – 51.02% increase

* 2024 – 6.47% increase

The NDC from 2009 to 2016 did a cumulative percentage increase in electricity tariffs of 294.6%, which translates into an average increase in electricity tariffs of 36.8% over their 8 years period in government

The NPP, on the other hand, did a cumulative percentage increase in electricity tariffs of 57.45% and an average of 7.2%.

While under the NDC, electricity tariffs were increased astronomically, Ghanaians at the same time were living in dumsor.

Under the Nana Addo-Bawumia government, electricity tariffs saw minimal increase with corresponding steady and reliable supply of electricity power.

Today, the government of the NDC that promised to reduce the cost of living for Ghanaians has, in their first four months in office, increased electricity tariffs by 14.75%. Coming events, they say, cast their own shadows.

And, hey! Let this not be blamed on any IMF programme because the data above shows that under the same IMF programmes, the NPP managed the electricity tariffs better.

‘His Arrogant Public Comments Are a Disrespect to the President’

0

In a recent radio interview, Charles Bissue, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Essikado-Ketan, sharply criticized Felix Kwakye Ofosu, accusing him of disrespecting President John Dramani Mahama over the ongoing cocaine plane saga as reported by Ghana Web.

Bissue questioned Kwakye Ofosu’s decision to speak out publicly on the matter, especially after the President had already tasked security agencies with investigating the drug trafficking allegations.

According to Bissue, the Minister of State for Government Communications acted independently and without presidential approval, which, he argued, undermines the authority of the President.

“Felix Kwakye Ofosu arrogantly coming out is not just disrespecting Ghanaians but also disrespecting the president and exposing him,” he stated during an interview on Asaase Radio.

Bissue emphasized the importance of following proper procedures, asserting that the security agencies should have completed their investigations before any public statements were made.

He stressed that any communication on the issue should have been coordinated among the relevant ministries, with the Ministry of Government Communications providing an official response only after the necessary investigations had been concluded.

He further pointed out that Kwakye Ofosu’s actions have raised concerns about the country’s reputation, suggesting that his uncoordinated remarks risk damaging the integrity of the presidency.

“The presidency does not belong to the NDC alone but to all of us. He is exposing the president and must be called to order,” Bissue added, calling for greater discipline in handling such sensitive matters.

The programmes Manager of Qatar Charity, Mr. Abdullah Muslem said the method adopted in the project design was cost effective, environmentally friendly, and implemented to fulfil the needs of clean drinking water for the residents of the area as it operated with sunlight in the day and filled the reservoir tanks to provide a means of water storage for use during the night.

The demonstrated the engineering of the project where two boreholes were dugout to complement each other in case of low or dry water, and allowing two solar pumps to pump the two boreholes water to three water storage tanks installed on the stand with the capacity of 5000 litre each tank (15000) Whereas a main tank was installed on ground with the capacity of 10000 litre.

The total water storage is 350000 liters at main project site. There are 14 main water storage points/tanks, installed at four different locations along with 3 tap stands for easy access to water near to the doorsteps.
All the water points across the area have been connected to the centralized reservoirs.

Mr. Muslim highlighted on the significance of the role and responsibilities of the residents of the Sagnarigu community for purposes of development of the area, and for sustainability of the project.
He saidQatar Charity’s role was to provide clean drinking water, whereas the people, after the implementation, had the ultimate responsibility to ensure its safety, operation, and maintenance.

The main objective for the implementation of the project was to provide a clean and safe drinking water to more than 10000 men, women, and children of the villages through a network of pipelines and fixed storing reservoirs/tanks at various central points along with installation of group taps for easy access to all.
According to the people of Sagnarigu, the project had been the first and best ever water intervention that the village has witnessed so far:

“This project is one of its kind in our village that we have witnessed. We are very thankful for QATAR CHARITY in this regard, and we hope that they will continue to work for our community in future,” the constituency communication officer, Abdullah Muhammed Amin added.

The chief of the area, Mr. Yakubu Abdulai, expressed his feelings of gratitude to QATAR CHARITY during the opening ceremony.
He said the lack of access to clean drinking water was a big issue for the entirearea , which had been resolved by QC.

He acknowledged, with gratitude to Qatar Charity, the fact that the project will forever serve as a lasting blessing for the residents of Sagnarigu, contributing to the promotion of health and well-being for the entire community.

“The efficient solar-powered water distribution system represents a positive step towards improving living conditions and enhancing development prospects in this remote village of the northern region, ” the Chief added.

NPP will be better if the ‘demons’ are removed

0

Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has called for a complete overhaul of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM in Kumasi, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng described the current leadership as ineffective and accused them of contributing to what he termed a “shameful” and “unprecedented” electoral loss.

“All the executives must resign for leading the party to an unprecedented defeat. If the demons in the NPP are not removed from their leadership positions, the party will continue to suffer,” he stated.

The renowned heart surgeon, who previously served under the Akufo-Addo administration, emphasized that the removal of “bad elements” within the party is critical to restoring trust and dignity among the party’s grassroots base and the general public.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng also took aim at former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, criticizing his leadership style and describing him as “unreceptive and close-minded.”

His remarks come at a time when the NPP is grappling with internal divisions and facing calls for reform in the wake of the 2024 electoral outcome, which saw a significant drop in the party’s parliamentary representation and loss of the presidency.

Shatta Wale will always remain relevant because of his unique branding – Attractive Mustapha

Blogger and entertainment pundit, Attractive Mustapha Blogger and entertainment pundit, Attractive Mustapha

Blogger and entertainment pundit, Andre Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah, popularly known as Attractive Mustapha, has stated that Shatta Wale’s brand will remain dominant in the Ghanaian music industry for many years to come.

Speaking on GTV’s Spectacle show, Attractive Mustapha, during a discussion on the longevity of artistes’ careers, disagreed with the perception that today’s musicians lack humility.

He insisted that humility should not be confused with branding, especially because an artiste’s brand is often strategic and intentional, especially in the case of Shatta Wale.

“Shatta Wale has been on top for more than a decade because of his controversial branding and consistent delivery of good music.

“Artistes like him are where they are today because they’ve been able to position themselves in a way that sparks conversations and draws attention. That’s branding, not lack of humility,” he said.

He further stated that whether people like or dislike Shatta Wale, his unique brand identity will keep him relevant for a very long time.

“If you’re not careful, you might confuse his bold brand persona with a lack of ability or respect. But it’s important to separate his real-life personality from the brand he has built,” he said.

‘You are spitting in the face of NPP’ – Salam Mustapha slams Appiah-Kubi over media appearance

0

Salam Mustapha (L) and Andy Appiah-Kubi (R) Salam Mustapha (L) and Andy Appiah-Kubi (R)

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has launched a scathing attack on the former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, accusing him of blatant disregard for the party’s directive.

Mustapha criticised the former lawmaker and senior member of the party for his continued appearances on Media General platforms, despite the party’s official decision, as stated in a communique, to boycott the media house.

The party had accused Media General of bias and unfair treatment towards them, particularly in the selection of panelists for its shows.

“I hope this finds you well. I want to convey to you the feelings of many party people with regards to your absolute disregard for the party’s directive on boycotting TV3 and Media General platforms. The party took this decision after an exhaustive deliberation and it was so communicated to the world by the director of communication for the party – Richard Ahiagbah.

“Subsequent to that, the party had made a number of complaints to management of the institution and pointed out our difficulties to them over unfair paneling amongst others. Therefore, it wasn’t a decision out of nowhere,” Mustapha posted in a Facebook post on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

The politician questioned the basis and reasoning behind Appiah-Kubi’s disregard for the party’s directive, describing his appearances on the media station’s shows as “spitting in the face of the party.”

He added that; “All these are known to you senior, yet for some strange reasons, you still make appearances on the platform. Senior, if I say it’s disrespect to the party, it’s an understatement. It’s spitting in the face of the party.

“Senior, this party made you Hon Andy Appiah-Kubi, you have been youth leader like me and an MP etc. In the adversity we find ourselves, it’s not time for personal glorification but how to rebuild our party up to task. It’s this same aggrandisement that led us into the ditch.”

Mustapha added that he could not understand why some members of the NPP are unable to follow the party’s directive.

He compared this to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which successfully led a boycott of Despite Media, with all party echelons fully adhering to the directive.

He questioned Appiah-Kubi, asking whether he considers himself wiser than the party members who deemed it necessary to make that decision.

“How’s it that Sammy Gyamfi is/was able to lead an effective boycott of one of the biggest platforms in this country, Kokrokoo on Peace Fm and everyone fell into line that we cannot? Why has everyone fallen into line except you? You’re bigger than all of us or wiser or some other reason that’s not known to us,” he said.

He called on the party, particularly its leaders, to set examples that would be worthy of emulation by the younger members of the party, urging them to be careful not to set a bad precedent.

“Let’s be conscious of the examples that we set for the younger generations coming up. If our bad actions doesn’t destroy the party now, it may in the future. For the NPP, we in leadership would not have been known persons in this country. It’s incumbent on all of us to hold the party in good stead for others to also rise. Let’s not encourage nonchalance in the party,” he concluded.

Reconsider halting prospecting licenses for small-scale mining — GNARoM

0

Government revoked some small scale mining licenses Government revoked some small scale mining licenses

The Ghana National Association of Rock Miners (GNARoM) has appealed to the Government to reconsider its decision to halt the issuance of prospecting licences for small-scale mining in the country.

Rather, it urged the government to address the bureaucratic system associated with acquiring such licenses to mitigate the illegal prospecting and its related activities.

The government, early this week, said it was considering halting the issuance of prospecting licences for small-scale mining as part of measures to overhaul the mining sector and curb illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.”

Addressing a news conference in Accra, Dr Twum Barimah, President, GNARoM, said such a decision would create “deep confusion” within the mining sector.

He dispelled claims that the issuance of prospecting licences for small-scale mining was the major cause of “galamsey.”

According to him, the reason for the rise in the illegal mining activity was the hijacking of the small-scale mining by some political figures, adding that such persons circumvented the mining laws to their advantage.

“When we were young guys, when I was about 15, we went into mines, and there was a scatter. The government brought a system where soldiers would come to the site, chasing people. Some fell into the pit, some of the soldiers got injured, and the Police died from that incident.

“So, promulgation of the mining law stopped that system, and the small-scale mining law was introduced. It helped us to a certain level; we formed a small-scale mining association, which also brought it to a certain level,” Dr Barimah said.

He added that: “Now, you know the reason why illegal mining has come out so much? It is because the land, which was demarcated for small-scale mining activity has finished, and some government comes in, changing the rules, but not the law.

“They are not changing the law, they adopted some rules to hijack small-scale mining activities. So, government stopping giving licences or signing licences will lead to a very deep confusion,” he stressed.

Additionally, Dr Barimah indicated that the delay in acquiring these licenses was also a major contributory factor to the galamsey activities and urged the government to address it.

“We are also having a problem where an application will be put to the Mineral Commission, and it will take years for us to get the licence. It will lead the person to go into illegality,” he said.

He expressed GNARoM’s commitment to responsible, environmentally friendly, and sustainable mining, indicating that about 90-95 per cent of its operations occurred underground, limiting destruction of the environment.

Dr Barimah also lauded the establishment of the Goldbod, which seeks to regulate the gold industry, stabilise the cedi, and maximise revenue from gold exports.

He described the Goldbod as a “game-changer” for the Ghanaian economy and pledged the Association’s support to the board to realise its objectives.

“We believe that hard rock mining holds the key to Ghana’s economic growth and development, and we are eager to collaborate with the Ghana Goldbod to make this vision a reality,” he said.

Dr Barimah also pledged the Association’s readiness to collaborate with the Goldbod and other relevant statutory bodies to restore and promote sustainable mining practices in the country.

Eric Offei, Legal Adviser for GNARoM, said as an Association, it was committed to ensuring that its members operated within the established legal framework to ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly mining.

“Operations of mining companies in Ghana cannot be for the fun of it. It must be done within the remit of the law,” he said.

8 illegal miners arrested in Eastern region, mining equipment seized

0

The taskforce set up by the Eastern Regional Security Council to clamp down on illegal mining has apprehended eight illegal miners and impounded dozens of mining equipment in the Denkyembuor,Atiwa West, Fanteakwa and Ayensuano districts.

The operation was carried out on Friday by the taskforce made up joint police/ military officers from the Eastern regional police command and the Southern Command respectively.

The items confiscated include 24 excavator batteries, 16 pumping machines, a chainsaw,
3 monitors, 5 control boards, 3 single-barrelled guns, 2 pump-action rifles, cartridges and cash amounting to GHȼ3,000.

Addressing the media after what she describes as a successful exercise , the regional minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, emphasised President John Mahama’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining.

“For the past days, we have been combing the Eastern region with our military and police to make sure the mandate by the president is obeyed.”

“If you go around, our waters are so bad, the environment is destroyed, pits are uncovered, our forest is being destroyed. It is a hazard to our nation and the region, so for the few days our men have been on the ground and here you are with several excavators that have been seized from them,” she observed.

According to her, it is as a result of government’s decision to ensure that there is access to clean raw water for the Ghana Water Company Limited to supply for domestic use.

“For the past days, we’ve been to our service providers especially water works because we don’t have clean water and it’s become a problem for us in our communities.”

We are telling the people that the men are on the ground, they’re not leaving anytime soon until we stop the illegal mining and the environment is cleared,” she assured.

She further assured the public that none of the seized equipment would be released to their owners, stating that the suspects will be put before the law courts.

“They’re not disappearing because it is the excavators that are used to destroy the environment and anytime we leave it for the people, they are going back into the forest, we’re keeping it until the president directs us what we should do with it.”

“We’re leaving them to the laws to take its own course, so whatever the law says about what they’ve done, we leave it to them,” she explained.

Unlike previous governments that resorted to the burning of excavators as a solution to illegal mining, the regional minister said “We have said that our government will not burn any excavator but if the orders come that we should use it to work in the region, we can use it.”

New customs division officers tasked to work to boost revenue collection

0

The Office of the Vice President has highlighted the need to transform the economic sector by effectively mobilizing revenue and creating an equitable tax regime.

Addressing the gathering on behalf of the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as the Special Guest of honour at the Graduation Ceremony for Customs Division Officer Cadets, Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia noted the crucial role of the Ghana Revenue Authority in bridging the gap caused by the recent dip in international funding.

“The recent closure of some international funding sources has significant impact on African countries, and Ghana is no exception. This situation presents challenges, but more importantly, it clarifies our path forward. Now more than ever, there is the pressing need to develop home-grown solutions to our national challenges.

“Government is, amongst other measures, reviewing the tax exemption regime to promote transparency, economic growth, and technology transfer and job creation. Reviewing and rationalizing port fees to enhance trade competitiveness and maximize revenue”, among others.

“To achieve these measures, the role of the Ghana Revenue Authority is indispensable. The revenue you collect represents the lifeblood of our national development agenda.

“Every cedi properly assessed and collected becomes the building blocks in a new school, medicine in a rural hospital, or investment in our nation’s critical infrastructure. Your vigilance at our ports and land borders will help to curtail smuggling while protecting Ghanaian businesses from unfair competition”.

Alex Segbefia disclosed plans to improve the staff capacity of the Customs Division to boost revenue collection.

Despite the staff requirement of five thousand, three hundred and twenty nine, the Customs Division capacity falls short with a current staff capacity of two thousand, six hundred and thirty five. Alex Segbefia says plans are underway to resource the sector.

“Government is very committed to equipping the Ghana Revenue Authority to maximize revenue generation, and my presence here this morning is a testament to that effect. I am reliably informed that the Customs Division is understaffed.

“In the coming days, the government will take the necessary steps to improve the staff conditions and adequately resource the division,” he assured.

Who told you? – Security analyst challenges MP over suspicious flight claim

0

Rev John Ntim Fordjour has been at the center of the flights claims Rev John Ntim Fordjour has been at the center of the flights claims

In the wake of a controversial claim made by Assin South MP and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, a retired military officer and security analyst, Col Festus Aboagye (Rtd), has called on the lawmaker to back his statements with concrete evidence.

Rev. Fordjour alleged that two aircraft had landed in Ghana under suspicious circumstances—sparking public discourse and raising concerns about national security. However, Col Aboagye believes the matter requires more than vague assertions, especially coming from a legislator entrusted with such a sensitive portfolio.

Speaking during an interview on TV3’s The KeyPoints, Col Aboagye questioned the manner in which the MP chose to share the information.

“The honourable MP, Ranking Member, Defence and Security portfolio, is not an ordinary person on the street. If there is credible threat to the security of this country, I don’t expect anybody of his calibre and stature to go to the media and inform them.

“The first elements that you want to get in touch with are the security structures of the state — a whole plethora of them, including that portfolio committee of Parliament,” he said.

According to Col Aboagye, the MP’s claims raise even more questions, especially since Rev. Fordjour does not work directly at the Kotoka International Airport, where the alleged incident took place. He called for clarity on the source of the information.

“We know that Rev Ntim Fordjour does not work at the Kotoka International Airport, so somebody would have informed him about the goings on. I am asking him today, through this portal, who informed him? Was it one of the security elements — BNI/NIB or was it an external agent? Maybe a member of the diplomatic community. Who gave him that information?”

He added that the lawmaker needed to move beyond insinuations and provide specifics on the intelligence he supposedly received.

“He needs to give us better particulars of the intelligence and so far, he has been hedging. Indeed, in several instances he seems to suggest that the state agencies must come and brief him as a member of the portfolio committee. What is the intelligence? What exactly was he told?”

Founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Prophet Kumchacha Founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Prophet Kumchacha

Popular preacher and founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Kumchacha, has shared what his three keys to longevity and good health are.

According to him, they are; a proper diet, quality sleep, and a good sex life.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Work and Happiness show with host OPD, Kumchacha stated that these elements are vital for physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

He, however, indicated that his advice is strictly for married couples and further cited some quotations from the Bible to buttress his point.

“He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. So, you and your wife need to practice these three things if you want to live a long life and look good as well,” he said.

The outspoken prophet advised against reckless living, adding that these practices are not just essential for physical health but also for emotional and mental well-being.

England emulates Ghana’s medical drone delivery service

NHS England delivering medical supplies using drones NHS England delivering medical supplies using drones

In April, 2019, the former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, introduced what turned out to be the world’s biggest medical delivery service using drones when he launched the Zipline Medical Drone Delivery Service in Ghana.

The service started in 2019 with four stations delivering essential medical supplies through drones to over 2000 health facilities within minutes in emergency situations in remote areas across the country.

The medical drone delivery service, initially ridiculed by the then opposition National Democratic Congress as a “fantasy and unrealistic”, has not only become a game changer in Ghana’s health delivery system but also set an international standard, hence attracting lots of commendations from international leaders and organisations.

Six years after Ghana introduced this innovative delivery of medical supplies to save time and particularly reach out to areas that it takes many hours to access healthcare, England has now adopted this game-changing innovation.

In a Facebook post on Saturday April 12, 2025, the NHS (National Health Service) in England has celebrated a milestone in their health delivery service by their successful introduction of delivering essential medical supplies using drones.

“In a new innovation, urgent blood samples are being transported across London – using drones! Transporting samples for high-risk patients between Hospitals at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust can take more than 30 minutes by road. Now, using high-tech drones, this can be as quick as two minutes.

“The new partnership between Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Apian Aero and Wing is helping clinicians achieve quicker results, so patients can get the best possible care and return home sooner. Amazing work!”, they wrote.

This celebration by the NHS England regarding achieving a watershed in their health service is a testament of the great vision of Ghana’s former Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, who paved the way for such innovation in Ghana and also tells the remarkable development that the country has made in streamlining the health sector.

Trump exempts smartphones and computers from new tariffs

0

Smartphones exempt from latest US tariffs Smartphones exempt from latest US tariffs

US President Donald Trump’s administration has exempted smartphones and computers from reciprocal tariffs, including the 125% levies imposed on Chinese imports.

US Customs and Border Patrol published a notice late on Friday explaining that the goods would be excluded from Trump’s 10% global tariff on most countries and the much larger Chinese import tax.

The move comes after concerns from US tech companies that the price of gadgets could skyrocket, as many of them are made in China.

The exemptions also include other electronic devices and components, including semiconductors, solar cells and memory cards.

The US is a major market for iPhones, while Apple accounted for more than half of its smartphones sales last year, according to Counterpoint Research.

It says as much as 80% of Apple’s iPhones intended for US sale are made in China, with the remaining 20% made in India.

Along with fellow smartphone giants such as Samsung, Apple has been trying to diversify its supply chains to avoid over-reliance on China in recent years.

India and Vietnam emerged as frontrunners for additional manufacturing hubs.

As tariffs took effect, Apple reportedly looked to speed up and increase its production of India-produced devices in recent days.

Trump had planned a host of steep tariffs on countries around the world set to go into effect this week.

But on Wednesday, he quickly reversed course, announcing that he would implement a 90-day pause for countries hit by higher US tariffs – except China – whose tariffs he raised to 145%. Trump said the Chinese tariff increase was because of the country’s readiness to retaliate with its own 84% levy on US goods.

In a dramatic change of policy, Trump said all countries that had not retaliated against US tariffs would receive a reprieve – and only face a blanket US tariff of 10% – until July.

The White House said the move was a negotiating tactic to extract more favourable trade terms from other countries.

Trump has said his import taxes will address unfairness in the global trading system, as well as bring jobs and factories back to American shores.

In a stunning display of resilience and individuality, Jamal Banda, the son of renowned entrepreneur Alhaji Banda, has become the talk of the town with his unique fashion sense and unwavering confidence. At a moment when most would opt for somber attire at a loved one’s farewell, Jamal turned heads at his father’s funeral, captivating Ghanaians with a bold fashion statement that spoke volumes about his personality and the rich cultural heritage he represents.

Jamal, who has quickly garnered a reputation as one of Ghana’s emerging style icons, effortlessly blended tradition with contemporary flair. His choice of outfit—a vibrant ensemble that incorporated traditional African prints with a modern twist—challenged conventional expectations of funerary dress. While mourners were gathered to pay their respects, Jamal’s creative interpretation of style served as a reminder that African fashion is not monolithic; it is dynamic, diverse, and ever-evolving. His ensemble not only paid homage to his father’s legacy but also celebrated the spirit of modern Africa.

The young star’s appearance sparked a flurry of admiration on social media, where one onlooker remarked, “His smiles alone can melt hearts. He is his father’s photocopy. Is he single?” Such comments, blending humor with genuine admiration, underline the magnetic charm that Jamal possesses. This blend of elegance and rebellion resonated deeply with many Ghanaians, sparking discussions across social media and within local communities about the evolving definitions of respect and remembrance.

Critics and enthusiasts alike have praised Jamal for redefining how cultural rituals intersect with modern fashion. His sartorial choice was not an act of defiance but rather a carefully considered expression of identity—one that challenges rigid norms while honoring timeless traditions. As Ghana continues to carve out its unique identity on the global stage, figures like Jamal Banda serve as powerful reminders that being young, famous, and unapologetically African is a celebration of heritage, innovation, and the courage to be oneself.

In an era that often blurs the lines between tradition and trend, Jamal Banda’s memorable appearance at a time of mourning resonates as a bold declaration: true style knows no bounds, and even in moments of sorrow, there is room for hope, pride, and creative expression.

APN, AfCFTA host Webinar on infrastructure funding for Africa

0

The Africa Prosperity Network (APN), in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, on Thursday hosted a high-level post-Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) 2025 webinar focused on how the continent can fund and build the infrastructure needed to drive trade, free movement, and sustainable economic growth.

The virtual session, titled “The Africa We Want: How Should Africa Fund and Build the Infrastructure for Trade, People Movement and Prosperity?” was moderated by Nana Yaa Mensah and Kojo Mensah of Asaase Radio. It brought together influential voices from financial institutions, logistics, tourism, engineering, manufacturing, and development sectors to discuss transformative solutions to Africa’s long-standing infrastructure deficit.

Addressing the Infrastructure Gap

CEO of the Africa Prosperity Network, Sidig Eltoum, identified key infrastructure weaknesses holding back Africa’s economic integration, including fragmented transport systems, unreliable power supply, inefficient logistics, and limited digital connectivity.

“Infrastructure is not just a commercial opportunity—it is a vehicle for long-term prosperity,” Mr. Eltoum stated.

Mr. Rui Pedro Afonso Livramento, Chief of Staff at the AfCFTA Secretariat, echoed the urgency of the matter. “The time to build infrastructure is now. We need more actions that translate into concrete plans,” he said.

A major highlight of the webinar was the unveiling of the Integrated Africa Infrastructure Growth Fund—dubbed the “One Dollar A Day” campaign. The crowdfunding initiative, which emerged from APD 2025 discussions, aims to raise sustainable financing for critical infrastructure across the continent.

Finance expert Mr. Eric Otoo, who is spearheading the initiative, said it will operate on two fronts: a commercial arm targeting institutional investments and a social arm mobilising individual and organisational donations.

“We have started. We must begin somewhere,” Mr. Otoo emphasized. “Let’s be unified and take the necessary steps now.”

The session also addressed how colonial-era infrastructure—designed for resource extraction—continues to hinder intra-African trade, and how a unified funding approach from Africans and the diaspora could help reverse this legacy.

Infrastructure and Africa’s Economic Potential

The World Bank estimates that a fully integrated African market could increase the continent’s income by $450 billion by 2035 and lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty. Yet, Africa faces an annual infrastructure financing gap of $130–170 billion.

Poor infrastructure adds 30% to 40% in trade costs and limits intra-African trade to just 30–40% of total trade, far below global averages.

Mr. Ziad Hamoui, President of Borderless Alliance (Ghana), stressed the need for a mindset shift. “True African integration requires us to reimagine borders as bridges. Seamless movement of people and goods should be seen as an economic multiplier.”

Innovative Financial Models

Mr. Emeka Uzomba, Director of Banking & Special Initiatives at the Office of the President, Afreximbank, shared three pioneering financial strategies:

Afreximbank-backed infrastructure bonds offering 8–10% returns.

A Pan-African Infrastructure Credit Rating system to reduce investor risk.
Blended finance models where multilaterals absorb the initial loss.
He also revealed that Afreximbank has earmarked $5 billion for corridor projects, with disbursements set to begin in Q3 2025.

From Ghana’s Ministry of Roads and Highways, Mr. James Amoo-Gottfried presented the country’s Road Fund model—financed through fuel levies, tolls, and digital tolling—as a sustainable model for infrastructure financing.

Mr. Pierre Coussey, a Ghanaian businessman, underscored the importance of aligning infrastructure development with profitability. “If we want investment, we must show there is a return,” he said.

Ms. Serwaa Agyemang-Botchey of Microsoft London urged stakeholders to start small and scale up over time. “We need to get something done,” she said.

Tackling Movement and Connectivity Barriers

Another key topic was the barriers to free movement caused by visa restrictions and disjointed travel systems.

Mr. Gideon Asare, CEO of Adansi Travels, noted that only 25% of intra-African air routes are directly connected, and visa-on-arrival policies cover just 54% of the continent.

“Travelling from Accra to Nairobi is 40% more expensive and twice as long as travelling to Dubai,” he said.

He highlighted documentation and regulatory inconsistencies at African borders as a major issue, while Mr. Anthony Pile, Chairman of Blue Skies Holdings, simply stated: “We do not need to be stuck at borders that limit our trade.”

Accra Compact 2025 and the Way Forward

The discussions built on the outcomes of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2025, held earlier this year in Accra, where the APD 2025 Compact was adopted. The Compact outlines commitments by governments, private sector players, and multilateral partners to prioritize infrastructure.

Governments pledged to streamline policies and facilitate project delivery in key corridors such as Lagos–Abidjan and the Lobito Corridor. The private sector is committed to investing in transformative projects, including regional railways, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure.

Multilateral institutions such as AfDB and Africa50 are committed to mobilising up to $2 trillion in domestic capital through blended finance models.

Ms. Tshegofatso Motaung, Founder of CedarLeb (South Africa), noted that “MSMEs stand to benefit significantly from improved infrastructure as they scale and expand into new markets.”

Looking Ahead

The webinar underscored the urgency and opportunity in addressing Africa’s infrastructure challenges. With a population projected to double in several countries over the next three decades and the AfCFTA already operational, stakeholders agreed that the time for talk is over—what Africa needs now is unified, sustained action.

Elton John celebrates ‘extraordinary’ 10th number one album

0

Sir Elton John says he is “blown away” after scoring the 10th UK number one album of his career.

Who Believes In Angels?, a collaboration with US country star Brandi Carlile, has topped the charts 52 years after the star’s first number one.

“It seems quite extraordinary that my career has gone on so long,” Sir Elton told the BBC.

“It always feels good to top a chart, no matter where it is. And with this album, I’m especially thrilled because I think it’s the finest album I’ve done for a long time.

Written and recorded over three weeks in late 2023, Who Believes In Angels? has received rave reviews from critics, who have called it “a gutsy, flamboyant tearjerker” and a “late-career high”.

But the album had a difficult gestation, which was captured in a warts-and-all documentary posted on YouTube.

Sir Elton was seen slamming down his headphones, shouting at his collaborators, ripping up song lyrics and threatening to quit.

‘Bad behaviour moments’

The star was “nervous” and “irritable”, partly because he was recovering from a hip replacement, he said, but also because he was working in a new way – writing live in the studio with Carlile, producer Andrew Watt and long-term lyricist Bernie Taupin.

“It was an enormous challenge, getting those four people together,” he told the BBC. “And the challenge really was at my feet.

“I was very nervous [because] I wanted the album to stand a certain way, but you can’t always guarantee it will.

“I think my nerves and my insecurities and my doubt led to a few bad behaviour moments, which was just about frustrations within myself.”

Once they had recorded the opening track, The Rose of Laura Nyro, “everything fell into place”, Sir Elton said.

“In two and a half weeks, we recorded 14 songs and finished them.”

The album’s release was delayed last year after an eye infection left the star with vision difficulties. Last week, he told the Times he could no longer watch his sons playing rugby.

With the album finally released, there has been particular praise for the single Swing For The Fences, which Carlile conceived as rallying call for the LGBTQ community.

“I’m a gay woman, Elton’s a gay man and we both have families, and our dreams have come true,” she told the NME.

“I was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool to write an anthem for young gay kids out there that calls them into a bigger, more elegant, more fabulous life? Just like, ‘Go, go! Don’t let anything hold you back!'”

“It’s a tough time out there for LGBTQ+ people,” Sir Elton told BBC News.

“At the moment when Brandi wrote this lyric, she wanted to say, ‘Listen, fight for yourself. Be proud of yourself who you are, never be ashamed of who you are, and you will win through.'”

In the UK, the album sold more than 15,000 copies in its first two days and was the week’s best-seller on vinyl.

Sir Elton has now drawn level with Abba, Queen, Kylie Minogue and Michael Jackson on the list of artists with the most UK number one albums.

The Beatles and Robbie Williams share the top spot, with 15 number ones apiece.

Elton John’s UK number one albums

Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player (1973)

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973)

Caribou (1974)

Elton John’s Greatest Hits (1974)

Sleeping With The Past (1989)

The Very Best Of Elton John (1990)

Good Morning To The Night (with Pnau) (2012)

Diamonds (2017)

The Lockdown Sessions (2021)

Who Believes In Angels? (2025)

The other new entry in this week’s Top 10 came from Cambridge indie band Black Country, New Road, whose third album Forever Howlong debuted at number three.

The band’s first release since the departure of frontman Isaac Wood, it trades itchy, off-centre guitar riffs for a more soothing, baroque-pop sound, with lyrics that focus on friendship and camaraderie.

It was the week’s biggest-seller in independent record shops, according to the Official Charts Company.

In the singles chart, Alex Warren’s Ordinary remained in pole position for a fourth week, with Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club at number two.

Ed Sheeran had the highest new entry at number three with his comeback single Azizam.

The Persian-flavoured track is the star’s 42nd Top 10 hit in the UK – but it’s the first time since the start of his career that the lead single from an album has failed to enter the chart number one.

“Stop Using Alan to Revive Your Dying Party” – Solomon Owusu Blasts NPP’s Desperate Tactics

0

Solomon Owusu, a prominent figure within the Movement For Change (MFC), has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Kofi Ofosu Nkansah over attempts to associate Alan Kyerematen with the party’s future ambitions as reported by Ghana Web.

The caution comes after Ofosu Nkansah, the former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, made a social media post suggesting unity within the NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.

In his April 11 post, Nkansah also extended a welcome to Alan Kyerematen, once a key NPP figure, back into the party’s fold.

Reacting to the gesture, Owusu criticized the move as an opportunistic effort to rejuvenate a party that had lost touch with Ghanaians.

He stated that the same individuals now calling for unity had previously attacked Kyerematen when he decided to break away and form the Movement For Change.

“Alan Kyerematen is very much happy with his political trajectory,” Owusu stated, dismissing any suggestion that the MFC leader intends to return to the NPP.

He stressed that Alan’s departure was a calculated decision, not an emotional reaction, and one he stands firmly by.

Owusu also reminded the public of the NPP’s declining state before the 2024 general elections, saying Nkansah’s remarks only confirm Alan’s earlier observations about the party’s downward spiral.

He warned the NPP to stop leveraging Kyerematen’s name to boost its image. “If their plan is to use Alan as a tool to revive their sinking party, they should prepare for a firm response from the Movement For Change,” he added.

Classic And Beautiful Gown Outfits Styles Suitable For Wearing To Church

News Hub Creator1h

Attending church calls for modest and elegant attire, making classic and beautiful gown outfits a perfect choice for worship. Flowing maxi dresses with subtle prints exude grace while maintaining simplicity, ensuring the focus remains on reverence rather than fashion. A-line silhouettes flatter various body types, creating a polished look that feels comfortable for sitting and standing during services. Soft, breathable fabrics like chiffon or cotton enhance comfort, allowing for ease of movement while maintaining a dignified appearance.

Neutral tones such as ivory, pastel blue, or muted lavender convey serenity, aligning with the solemnity of the church environment. Delicate lace detailing or modest embroidery adds sophistication without being overly ornate, striking the right balance between elegance and humility. Long sleeves or capped sleeves provide coverage while still keeping the outfit stylish, ensuring appropriateness for a sacred setting. Pairing a gown with a tailored blazer or a lightweight shawl offers versatility, allowing adjustments for varying temperatures inside the church.

Closed-toe heels or modest flats complement the gown, completing the ensemble with understated refinement. Accessories should be minimal—pearl earrings or a simple pendant necklace add a touch of refinement without distraction. Timeless designs ensure the outfit remains appropriate season after season, making it a practical addition to any wardrobe. Choosing a well-fitted gown that skims the body without clinging ensures both comfort and modesty, reflecting respect for the occasion. Ultimately, a classic church gown blends tradition with subtle modernity, allowing the wearer to feel confident while honoring the sanctity of the space. By prioritizing simplicity and grace, these outfits effortlessly align with the reverence and dignity of worship.

Minority urges government to act swiftly on Bawku security crisis

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei, GNA

Accra, April 12, GNA- The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has sounded the alarm on the alleged deteriorating security situation in Bawku, where persistent violence has claimed lives, displaced residents, and crippled essential services.

“The escalating attacks, including sporadic shootings, arson and home invasions, have raised concerns about the effectiveness of measures to curb arms proliferation,” Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament has said.

At an emergency Press Conference in Parliament House on Friday, Rev Ntim Fordjour, the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South called on the government to demonstrate greater urgency and decisiveness. He said: “The deteriorating situation in Bawku is a national concern, and the government must take immediate action to prevent further escalation.”

“The people of Bawku deserve to live in peace and security, and we urge the government to prioritise a sustainable resolution to this crisis before it spirals further out of control,” he added.

Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps, Rev Ntim Fordjour said the instability had devastated affected communities, forcing schools to shut down and key institutions and businesses to flee the area due to safety concerns. “Critical sectors like education and healthcare are severely impacted, with teachers, nurses and other professionals refusing postings to Bawku for fear of their safety.

“The situation demands a more coordinated response, considering Bawku’s strategic location as a border town poses a wider national and regional security risk,” he said.

Rev Ntim Fordjour cited experts, like Dr Victor Doke, a Security Lecturer at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, who had suggested that peace-building activities should involve neutral state institutions and civil society organizations to rebuild trust between the people and security agencies.

He noted that to achieve lasting peace, stakeholders should emphasise the need for trust among all parties involved, including security agencies.

He also called on neutral bodies, like the National Peace Council, to facilitate coexistence between factions and help resolve the conflict.

“The government must prioritise a sustainable resolution to the crisis, addressing the root causes of the violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of Bawku’s residents,” Rev Ntim Fordjour noted.

‘The Party Will Keep Losing’

0

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, has delivered a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging significant changes within the party to avoid further electoral setbacks as per reports from MyNewsGH.

In an interview with Nhyira FM, the former minister called for the resignation of current party executives, accusing them of leading the NPP into an “unprecedented defeat.”

Frimpong-Boateng did not mince words, describing some influential figures within the party as “demons” whose leadership must be removed to secure the NPP’s future.

He warned that if these individuals remain in power, the party will continue to face challenges in regaining voter trust.

The former minister also expressed his frustration with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, claiming that his advice was repeatedly ignored, which he believes could have had a positive impact on the nation’s governance.

“Akufo-Addo turned deaf ears to the many pieces of advice I gave him,” Frimpong-Boateng lamented, adding that his counsel could have altered the course of the administration.

Frimpong-Boateng emphasized that good governance is about “common sense minus corruption” and underscored the importance of strategic investments in human capital and exports for economic progress.

He further pointed out that effective governance requires leadership willing to listen and make necessary changes to create long-term benefits for the country.

“If the Demons Aren’t Removed, NPP Will Continue to Suffer” – Prof. Frimpong-Boateng

0

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rid itself of what he describes as “bad elements” that have led to its recent defeat in the 2024 elections as reported by Myjoyonline.

According to Professor Frimpong-Boateng, a change in leadership is crucial for restoring dignity and trust both within the party and among the general public.

Speaking on Nhyira FM in Kumasi, the respected heart surgeon emphasized that the party’s executives must step down for their role in the party’s loss.

He specifically warned that unless the “demons” within the NPP are removed, the party will continue to suffer.

He further expressed disappointment with the leadership of former President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of being “unreceptive and close-minded.”

Professor Frimpong-Boateng revealed that despite offering several pieces of advice that could have improved the party’s fortunes, his suggestions were ignored, which contributed to the poor governance he criticized.

He stated that there were many capable individuals within the party who were sidelined under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, a situation he believes contributed to the NPP’s downfall.

The professor also spoke on the broader issue of governance, advocating for a focus on building human capacity to enhance productivity and exports, rather than solely relying on domestic revenue generation.

He emphasized that good governance is rooted in common sense, free of corruption, and grounded in building a solid human resource base.

Egyapa Mercer accuses Mahama of politicising Bawku conflict

0

Andrew Egyapa Mercer (Left) President John Mahama (Right) Andrew Egyapa Mercer (Left) President John Mahama (Right)

A former Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has slammed President John Dramani Mahama for allegedly playing politics with the ongoing conflict at Bawku, in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

He urged political figures to refrain from interfering in the Bawku conflict, while recommending that the long-standing security issue be resolved by employing a united, non-partisan approach devoid of political interests.

The former Sekondi MP lamented how some politicians have allegedly taken advantage of the conflict to further their own agendas.

He said this during a discussion on JoyNews’ Newsfile on April 12, 2025.

“We the politicians must take our hands off the Bawku situation and let us work together,” Egyapa Mercer said.

He noted that such interference only serves to aggravate tensions in a region already plagued by instability.

“I cringe when matters of national importance and national security are politicised. We know the problems of the Sahel, and can’t understand (sic) how any of our leaders would exploit the situation for political gain,” he said.

He further accused President John Dramani Mahama of using the conflict as part of his campaign during the 2024 general elections.

He stressed that it is important to view the Bawku conflict as a national issue rather than a political opportunity.
