The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has urged the government to boldly implement the promises in their campaign manifesto.

According to him, the time for propaganda and politics is over, and the 2025 budget is an opportunity to brief Ghanaians on the way forward.

Speaking to GhanaWeb ahead of the budget presentation on March 11, 2025, he said the NDC made about 273 promises in their manifesto, which should see some fruition as they present their first budget in parliament.

“There are also about 273 promises they made in the manifesto. This is the time to start giving life to them; we’ve finished the elections. The politics is over; the propaganda is over.

“He also has to make sure the fiscal consolidation strategy we all agreed on- reduce taxes, reduce expenditure, reduce borrowing- he will give life to it. Not that he will take away about three taxes for political funfair and introduce six more at the back,” he told Mawuli Ahorlumegah.

Oppong Nkrumah urged the government to present the state of the economy truthfully without falsifying or misrepresenting figures.

Mikel Arteta cannot win Premier League and Champions League with Arsenal

0

Ex-Nigerian footballer, Mikel Obi Ex-Nigerian footballer, Mikel Obi

Former Nigerian footballer Mikel Obi has criticized Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta over his performance since taking charge of the team in 2019.

He explained that the Spanish coach has significantly improved the Arsenal squad and their style of play to an appreciable level; but more work needs to be done.

“Has he done well for Arsenal? Yes. Has he improved Arsenal? Yes. Mikel Arteta has improved Arsenal from where they were before he took over. He’s massively improved the squad, the team, the way they play, and the way the fans want to see an Arsenal team play,” he said while speaking on The Obi One Podcast.

However, the former Chelsea midfielder asserted that even though the Gunners are playing well, their performance under Arteta will not be enough for the team to win huge titles like the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

The former Nigerian Olympics squad captain stated that it is high time the Arsenal hierarchy reconsidered the coaching options if they wanted to win titles instead of being contenders.

“Now, is he the guy to take Arsenal to the next level, which is winning the Premier League or the Champions League? I don’t see that, because it’s not about competing. They should be talking about winning the League, not competing to win the League.

“When was the last time Arsenal won the League? It was in 2004, and it’s been 21 years since they won it. You cannot be talking about competing now. The Arsenal fans keep talking about competing, but they should be talking about winning it,” he added.

Arteta has come under scrutiny after losing ground to Liverpool in the 2024/2025 Premier League title race, trailing the Reds by 15 points with a game in hand.

The coach joined Arsenal in December 2019, and has won only the FA Cup in 2020.

A 21-year-old student from Koteti College in Tanga, Bonus Mbono, under police custody A 21-year-old student from Koteti College in Tanga, Bonus Mbono, under police custody

A student from Koteti College in Tanga, Bonus Mbono ,21, has been arraigned at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court on three charges, including publishing false information on TikTok and using a SIM card registered under another person’s name.

The accused appeared in court on Monday, March 10, 2025, for the reading of Economic Sabotage Case No. 5907 of 2025.

The charges were presented by State Attorney Erick Kamala before Senior Resident Magistrate Gwantwa Mwankuga.

Before the charges were read, Magistrate Mwankuga informed the accused that he was not required to respond, as the court does not have jurisdiction over economic sabotage cases unless granted special permission.

Following this, the prosecution was allowed to present the charges.

In the first charge, Kamala alleged that on February 8, 2025, at an unknown location, the accused published false information on the social media platform TikTok by editing a video of Julius Nyerere, making it appear as if he was moving his head in and out of the Tanzanian Sh1000 banknote, despite knowing it was false.

The second charge states that on the same date and at an unspecified location, the accused used an illegal device called Pix Vase to create and upload a false post on TikTok, fully aware that it was a legal offense.

The third charge alleges that on February 10, 2025, at Koteti College in Tanga, Mbono used a SIM card registered under the name Prisca Anthony, contrary to the law and without notifying the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

After the charges were read, the prosecution stated that investigations were still ongoing and requested another mention date.

Magistrate Mwankuga adjourned the case until April 10, 2025, for mention, and the accused remains in remand.

‘Dearly loved’ YouTuber dies on holiday aged 24 as brother hits back at speculation

Alysha Burney, 24, had millions of followers across social media, and has been remembered by friends and fans as “an angel” after the news of her death on holiday emerged

YouTuber Alysha Burney died the day before her 25th birthday

A 24-year-old YouTube star has tragically died the day before her birthday, leaving family and fans distraught.

Alysha Burney, who had over five million followers across all her social media platforms, died while on holiday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Alysha’s grieving brother Charles Burney has hit back at “misinformation” surrounding her death, revealing the real reason was nothing to do with substance abuse.

Responding to wild speculation that began to spread online, Charles made it clear that his sister “did not do drugs” and emphasised that she was a “self-loving and happy individual who cherished her life and was looking forward to the upcoming year’s plans”.

Her actual cause of death was an unexpected asthma attack during her sleep, Charles explained, reports the Mirror.

In a heartfelt interview with FOX4, Charles—who was there during her final moments—blasted the unfounded rumours. “There’s a spread of misinformation online, stating different things based on speculation. These sources lack credibility and should not be believed. My sister did not engage in environments that would lead to such situations.”

He further celebrated her generous nature, saying: “She was not selfish with her knowledge and was a very open book about her journey. She will always be dearly loved, and her legacy will live on forever. Alysha was very goal-oriented, creative, and passionate about giving back. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Digital Media Production and was working towards her graduate degree,” he added.

Alysha, a rising star with a vibrant online presence, was the proud owner of ABurneyProductions, her very own production company. The firm had already made its mark with a film and had several more projects in the pipeline.

She even took a shot at TV fame when she auditioned for Wild ‘N Out at the tender age of 19. Although she didn’t make the cut, her family believes that rejection fuelled her determination to conquer the digital world.

Her brother shared that her ultimate ambition was to pen scripts and direct, while also uplifting fellow young talents from her hometown of Kansas City. Following the tragic announcement of her passing, fans have been flooding social media with tributes.

On her last YouTube video, posted nearly two weeks prior, one heartbroken fan commented: “Alysha I’m crying writing this. You got me through depression girl. I was DOWN and I found you and you brought me back. You touched so many lives. We love you angel, fly high.”

Another wrote: “R.I.P Alysha.️ You always had us smiling at all of your videos, you mean so much to all of us. We will always love and never forget you.”

A third shared: “Crazy how fast something can happen, she was just trying to celebrate her birthday weekend,” and yet another said: “This hurts so bad Alysha , you are still my favorite YouTuber you had randomly came up on my page long ago and I’ve loved you ever since. You are one of my biggest happy places and I’ll love you forever and thank you for helping me laugh again when I forgot how to. Your videos will be on replay. Thank you for helping all these people aswell.”

Comfortable Long Dress Styles for Ladies: Effortless Elegance and Comfort

0

Long dresses are a wardrobe staple for many women, offering both comfort and style. They can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, making them incredibly versatile. Whether you’re attending a formal event or simply looking for something easy and chic for everyday wear, a comfortable long dress is the perfect choice. Here are some stylish and comfortable long dress options for women that combine elegance with ease.

The maxi dress is the epitome of comfort and style. With its long, flowing silhouette, it offers plenty of room to move while still creating an elegant, streamlined look. Maxi dresses come in various fabrics, from lightweight cotton for casual summer days to heavier materials like jersey or knit for cooler months. The versatility of the maxi dress makes it suitable for a variety of occasions, including beach outings, picnics, or even a casual dinner. Pair it with sandals or heels to adjust the look to your liking.

A wrap dress is a great option for those looking for a flattering and comfortable long dress. The wrap design cinches at the waist, giving the dress structure while still offering ample room in the skirt. The adjustable fit of a wrap dress allows it to accommodate different body shapes, making it both practical and stylish. Choose a wrap dress in a soft, stretchy fabric like cotton or jersey for the utmost comfort. This style is perfect for both casual events and more formal settings when paired with the right accessories.

The shirt dress combines the ease of a button-down shirt with the flow of a long dress, creating a relaxed yet chic look. It’s typically made from soft cotton or linen, making it breathable and comfortable for all-day wear. A shirt dress can be dressed up with a belt to define the waist or worn loosely for a more relaxed, bohemian vibe. It’s a versatile style that works well for casual outings, weekend brunches, or even a trip to the office when paired with a blazer.

For a minimalist and comfortable option, a slip dress is a perfect choice. Made from silky or satin materials, slip dresses offer a lightweight, breathable fit that’s ideal for warmer weather. They can be worn on their own or layered over a t-shirt or under a cardigan for cooler days. With its simple, sleek design, a slip dress offers an effortlessly elegant look that can be dressed up for a night out or dressed down for a casual day with sneakers or sandals.

For women who love a more free-spirited style, a boho-chic maxi dress is a fantastic option. These dresses often feature loose, flowing silhouettes, with added details like bell sleeves, lace trim, or floral prints. The loose fit of the boho maxi dress allows for unrestricted movement, making it an excellent choice for both relaxed afternoons and evening events. Pair it with sandals, a floppy hat, and some layered jewelry to create a stylish, laid-back look.

For ultimate comfort, the t-shirt dress is a great go-to. Made from soft, breathable fabric like cotton, t-shirt dresses offer a relaxed fit that’s perfect for lounging or running errands. The simple, oversized design of this style provides maximum comfort without sacrificing style. You can easily dress it up with a belt and accessories, or keep it casual with sneakers for a day out with friends.

Conclusion: Comfortable long dresses are a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe, offering a perfect combination of style, ease, and versatility. From maxi dresses to t-shirt dresses, each style can be customized to suit your personal taste and the occasion at hand. By choosing the right fabric, fit, and accessories, you can create countless outfits that keep you comfortable while still looking chic. Whether you’re heading to the beach, a casual lunch, or a formal event, a comfortable long dress can be your go-to piece for effortless elegance.

I Can’t Sign Any Artiste – Tiwa Savage

0

Tiwa Savage

Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has stated that she has no plans to sign upcoming artists, citing the immense pressure that comes with managing musicians.

The award-winning singer told Forbes Africa that handling artists can be overwhelming, and she does not feel equipped to take on that responsibility.

“Everyone always says to me, ‘When are you going to sign an artiste? I don’t think I have the gift to sign another artiste, because artists are stressful. I could just be sleeping, and then I will wake up and my artist is trending for something else,” she said.

Instead of signing artists, Tiwa Savage plans to support emerging talents through alternative means. She disclosed that she is working on setting up a music school, which will provide aspiring musicians with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the industry.

“But I do have the gift to help, which is why I am trying to do the music school, where you can go and later sign to a label that can actually help you,” she added.

Tiwa Savage remains a dominant force in the Afrobeats scene, and while she may not be signing artists, her initiative aims to equip the next generation with the tools to thrive in the music industry.

I am confident Ghanaians will realise all politicians are not the same – Sammy Gyamfi

0

The acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that Ghanaians will soon come to understand that not all politicians are the same.

Speaking ahead of the presentation of the 2025 budget statement and economic policy to Parliament, he emphasised the distinction between those who use flattery to deceive for political gain and those who uphold integrity, honouring the social contract they have with the people.

Speaking to JoyNews Parliamentary correspondent, Kweku Asante, Mr Gyamfi emphasised that some politicians prioritise flattering the masses to secure power, while others resort to dishonesty to climb to office without regard for the promises they make to the people.

However, he stressed the importance of integrity in leadership, specifically praising President John Dramani Mahama as a model of such values.

“I am confident that today, Ghanaians will come to the realisation that all politicians are not the same. There are those who flatter to deceive just for purposes of power, and there are those who lie their way into office with no respect to their social contract with the people,” the acting PMMC MD stated.

According to him, leaders like Mr Mahama, have always respected the social contract with their citizens, and stands apart from others in the political landscape.

“There are politicians with integrity, like His Excellency John Dramani Mahama – the man we all follow, the man we all serve, who has respect and regard for his social contract with the people,” he added.

The former spokesperson for the governing party, also highlighted the upcoming budget presentation by the Minister of Finance, suggesting that it will be a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to fulfilling the promises it made during the 120-day social contract and within the party’s manifesto.

“Right from this budget, you are going to see a government that keeps its social contract with the people. You are going to see the Minister of Finance announce a lot of policies in fulfillment of promises we made in our 120-day social contract and in our manifesto,” he assured the public.

Meanwhile, the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, will today, Tuesday, March 11, present the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament, marking the first comprehensive financial roadmap of the new Mahama administration since assuming office.

Scrap E-Levy, Betting Tax – Boako to Ato Forson

0

The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Gideon Boako, has urged the Mahama government to scrap the E-Levy and betting tax in the 2025 budget.

Speaking ahead of the budget presentation by the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on Tuesday, March 11, Dr. Boako emphasized that Ghanaians expect these levies, along with the COVID-19 and Emissions levies, to be removed.

He, however, stressed the need for the government to provide alternatives to make up for the revenue shortfalls that may arise from the removal of these taxes.

“Every Ghanaian is expecting the E-Levy to be scrapped, we expect betting tax to go. I expect the COVID-19 levy to go and the Emissions levy to go. It is important that the Finance Minister, in scrapping them, should be able to give us the alternative of the revenue shortfalls that may come.

“You cannot tell us that you want to scrap one tax and come up with another, and even more impactful.”

Dr. Boako also called on the government to be transparent with Ghanaians by presenting accurate and verifiable data in the budget.

Go and Tell Pr*stitutes to Sleep With Any Man they Meet – Angry Pastor Fires Back at Efia Odo for Asking Why Pastors Don’t Go and Heal People in Korle-Bu

0

A Ghanaian pastor has clapped back at Efia Odo after she asked on social media why Ghanaian pastors don’t storm hospitals to heal the sick.

In a video sighted by GhanaCelebrities.com, the pastor is seen attacking Efia Odo, tagging her for being a f00l and having a low IQ.

According to the pastor, Efia Odo should ask prostitutes to go around and sleep with everyone for free. Or musicians to go around and sing to people for free. Or pilots to go around and fly anybody they meet for free.

He said Efia Odo’s question is nonsensical and does not make any sense because there is no profession under this sun that goes around to offer their services to anyone they see but those who need the members of that profession rather has to go and see them.

He added that people feel comfortable speaking any way about pastors, and it’s time to bring that nonsense to an end.

Watch him below…

Social media users slammed the pastor over his video, calling his points nonsensical.

According to netizens, Jesus went around healing people so there’s nothing wrong with calling on pastors to do the same. Others said by comparing thier profession to others, he is admitting that a pastor is just an occupation or trade to him and not a calling.

Qatar Charity inaugurates refurbished 37 Military Hospital mosque

0

Qatar Charity, an international non-governmental organisation (NGO), has inaugurated a refurbished mosque at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra at the weekend.

The new facility is expected to be a centre for worship, learning, and spiritual growth for military personnel and the broader community.

It has been transformed into a state-of-the-art religious facility with an office and 10 ablution rooms, a three-classroom, Quran memorisation centre with an office and an Imam’s residence, a mechanised borehole, a mortuary with a washroom, a power house and a stamped concrete compound.

Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brigadier General Prosper Ayibor, said the mosque would enable military personnel, civilian staff, hospital clients and visitors to perform their religious obligations.

The Country Director of Qatar Charity, Mr Hasan Ali Owda, commended the hospital authorities, and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for swiftly responding to the NGO’s request to reconstruct the 37 Military Hospital mosque.

The representative of One Ummah Ghana, Mr Terek Merabi, on behalf of the group, praised the NGO for renovating the mosque to promote religious activities.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, noted that the mosque would serve as a spiritual sanctuary for military personnel and their families.

“This mosque stands as a beacon of faith, unity, and spiritual solace. As a military institution, we recognise that strength is not only measured by the might of our weapons or the strategy of

our operations, but also by the resilience of our spirits and the faith that binds us together. In times of peace and adversity, it is our faith that provides us with comfort, direction, and a sense of purpose,” he elaborated.

“The Ghana Armed Forces remains a professional institution built on the principles of discipline, inclusivity, mutual respect, and religious diversity. This mosque is not just a place of worship, but a testament to the belief that unity in diversity is our strength,” Vice Admiral Yakubu said.

Former Ambassador to Egypt and retired Chief Imam of the GAF, Lieutenant Colonel Ummar Sanda Ahmed, expressed satisfaction at the collaboration between Qatar Charity and the military leadership in promoting religion.

“This mosque symbolises more than just a place of wor

ship; it represents community, unity, and shared faith. The idea of a mosque as a centre of togetherness has been beautifully captured in its design. May Allah abundantly reward Qatar Charity for their generosity,” he explained.

The ceremony also attracted high-profile personnel, including Commissioner of Customs and Director of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Brigadier General Ayorogo; Deputy Chief Staff Officer for Policy and Plans at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Yahuza Salifu; Director General of Medical and Dental Services, Brigadier General Appiah, Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Brigadier General Salifu Fuseini and the Director General of Religious Affairs of the GAF, Brigadier General Kumi Woode. —GNA

I Quit Media Job To Start Charterhouse -Theresa Ayoade

0

Theresa Ayoade

Theresa Ayoade, CEO of Charterhouse, has shared her remarkable journey into Ghana’s entertainment industry.

Speaking in an interview on Joyprime, Madam Ayoade recounted the pivotal moment when she chose to leave a secure broadcasting career to co-found Charterhouse alongside her husband.

“I was working at Multimedia, but I had also gone back to university. Full-time work was becoming difficult to combine with my studies, so I decided to quit and join my husband in setting up Charterhouse,” she revealed.

She emphasized that the decision was entirely her own: “He didn’t ask me to quit. It was something I wanted to do because I needed more flexibility.”

Building Charterhouse, however, was not without its challenges. Launching major projects such as the Ghana Awards initially met with scepticism. “At the beginning, it was just us who saw the vision. Many people had misconceptions and doubted what we were trying to do,” she admitted. Despite the early hurdles, perseverance and a commitment to quality eventually paid off.

Today, the Ghana Awards stands as one of the country’s most celebrated entertainment events—proof to Ayoade’s determination and vision.

“We had to be patient and let our work speak for us. Today, the Ghana Awards is one of the biggest events on the entertainment calendar, and that makes me proud,” she said with a smile.

Ayoade’s story is not just inspiring but a reminder that taking risks and believing in one’s vision can lead to extraordinary success. For young creatives looking to make an impact, her journey offers a powerful guide: sometimes, the courage to pursue a dream—no matter how daunting the challenges—can transform both a career and an industry.

ACEP urges govt to fast-track funding for second gas plant

0

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has stressed the need for swift action in securing funding for Ghana’s second gas processing plant to ensure a stable fuel supply for power generation.

Kodzo Yaotse, Policy Lead for Petroleum and Conventional Energy at ACEP, noted that gas flaring has been on an upward trajectory over the past five years, leading to significant economic losses.

He warned that without adequate gas processing infrastructure, Ghana will continue to rely on expensive and environmentally harmful liquid fuels to meet its energy needs.

“There are also the consideration around how we secure funding for a second gas processing facility to provide security of fuel supply for power generation especially when you consider that we have been flaring gas on an increasing trajectory over the last 5 years.

“If you look at the economic cost of the gas that is being flared and the fact that there are fuel supply challenges that we have to every now and then be going to liquid fuels which are more expensive and also bad for the environment, then we have to quickly secure funding for that [gas processing plant] as well,” Yaotse stated in an interview with Citi Business News.

He highlighted the economic impact of gas flaring, stressing that the government must prioritize investment in gas processing to reduce waste and enhance energy security.

The government recently announced plans to construct a second gas processing plant, a move ACEP has welcomed. However, the think tank insists that funding must be secured promptly to maximize the benefits of the project.

You Cannot Build A Show on Lies – Kevin Taylor Trolls Okatakyie Afrifa as His Show Unexpectedly Goes Off Air

0

The beef between Kevin Taylor and Okatakyie Afrifa is heating up! In a new video, Kevin Taylor mocked Okatakyie after his show was abruptly taken off the air during a recent episode.

While recording the latest episode of his show, For the Records, the transmission was cut off, and Afrifa was taken off-air.

He then shared a message to his fans, informing them that the show would continue the next day.

“We are sorry for break in transmission. We shall be back on Wednesday with the same story,” he wrote.

Following that, Kevin Taylor took to his show, With All Due Respect, to mock Okatakyie.

He said Okatakyie does not know the difficulty it takes to organize a live show every night and thinks the job is easy but he’s simply not prepared.

Taylor also called out the former ABN host for constantly lying on his show. He said basing a show on lies is not unsustainable because a lie can only last for 24 hours, but the truth stands forever.

The U.S. based political commentator said his show has lasted as long as it has because he always tells the truth and exposes corrupt politicians. He said Okatakyie should correct course and learn to speak the truth otherwise, his show would also be short-lived.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

As Ghanaians eagerly await the presentation of the 2025 Budget, the first under the newly sworn-in John Dramani Mahama administration, expectations are high.

This is because of the many promises he made to Ghanaians, especially within the tourism and creative arts sector during the 2024 elections.

Today, March 11, 2025, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is expected to include the sector in budget presentation before Parliament, which aims to tackle its many challenges.

Here are some things to expect:

Black Star Experience

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson is expected to present the budget for the “Black Star Experience,” one of the key policies the administration promised to implement upon assuming office.

President John Dramani Mahama, during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) and in the NDC manifesto, emphasised that his administration plans to create and promote the “Black Star Experience” as Ghana’s flagship culture, arts, and tourism brand, with the goal of making Ghana a preferred tourism destination.

The finance minister is expected to detail how much the government plans to invest in the “Black Star Experience” initiative, which will include street carnivals, a film week, a fashion festival, food fairs, theatrical performances, and more.

Building an ultra-modern recreation village for creatives

The creation of a film village has been a topic of discussion for years. Members of the creative arts industry, especially actors, have repeatedly called on the previous NPP administration to provide a recreation center that would promote the movie industry.

In the 2024 manifesto, the NDC promised to collaborate with the private sector to build an ultra-modern recreation village coupled with an auditorium for films, musical concerts, and other special events.

Dr. Ato Forson is expected to provide details on the cost of this policy and how much funds will be allocated to it.

Reviving the Creative Arts Fund and Pension Scheme

In today’s budget presentation, the finance minister will also address President Mahama’s vision to revive the Creative Arts Fund and pension scheme, which will offer sustainable financial support for start-ups as well as large, medium, and small creative enterprises that are struggling within the sector.

Dr. Ato Forson is expected to provide insights into the estimated cost of implementing this policy and how much funds are allocated for it.

Support for young digital content creators

The NDC’s manifesto highlighted their commitment to supporting young digital content creators in developing content that promotes Ghanaian culture.

Dr. Ato Forson is expected to outline how much the Mahama-led administration plans to allocate for this initiative to nurture the next generation of digital content creators in Ghana.

Enhancing the collection of royalties in the industry

The finance minister is expected to address how the government intends to tackle copyright issues in the country.

He plans to shed light on the steps the administration will take to facilitate, enforce, and enhance the collection and management systems for copyrights and royalties in Ghana.

Tourism Infrastructure enhancement

This administration promised to refurbish and modernize Ghana’s iconic cultural heritage sites, as well as develop potential sites. Additionally, they plan to construct new Centers of National Culture and refurbish existing ones, transforming them into spaces that will not only attract international tourists but also foster domestic tourism through immersive, community-based cultural programming.

In this regard, Ghanaians are expecting the finance minister to announce how much is allocated to this initiative.

Businesses confident ahead of 2025 budget – KPMG

The new survey found that 80 percent of businesses are confident in the 2025 budget The new survey found that 80 percent of businesses are confident in the 2025 budget

Local businesses have expressed strong confidence in the government’s 2025 budget, citing expectations of tax relief and economic expansion.

However, industry leaders warn that without decisive revenue generation and fiscal discipline, the country risks widening its fiscal deficit.

A new survey conducted by KPMG in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) found that 80 percent of businesses believe government policies in the 2025 budget will drive economic recovery.

The optimism is largely anchored in expectations that the administration of President John Mahama will abolish certain taxes and implement the 24-hour economy initiative, which many see as a catalyst for job creation and business expansion.

“More than 50 percent of respondents have called for the e-levy and COVID-19 levy to be scrapped,” the report stated, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction with these taxes.

While their removal would provide relief for businesses and consumers, the government would forgo an estimated GH¢6.4billion in revenue.

Survey respondents, which cut across large corporations and small businesses, acknowledged the challenge of maintaining fiscal stability while rolling back unpopular taxes. Many suggested alternative revenue measures, including broadening the tax base to incorporate the informal sector, reintroducing road tolls and taxing digital services.

“Rather than simply removing revenue measures, this presents an opportunity to explore alternative solutions such as enhancing tax compliance, leveraging AI-driven tax audits and addressing illicit financial flows,” stated UNDP Ghana’s Resident Representative, Niloy Baerjee.

Expanding property taxation is another key recommendation. The report suggests implementing a tiered property tax, which would be added to household utility bills and based on property value and use “for direct and equitable collection”.

It also proposes accelerating the rollout of digital cadastral mapping to improve documentation of property ownership and valuation, ensuring more efficient tax collection.

The informal sector remains a significant untapped revenue source, with businesses advocating “a flat-rate or tiered tax system for informal sector operators (e.g., traders, artisans), with simplified registration and mobile-friendly filing platforms in multiple languages”.

Additionally, respondents called for a digital services tax targetting freelancers, content creators and gig workers, many of whom operate outside traditional tax structures.

Beyond revenue generation, the survey highlights a need for aggressive expenditure control and waste reduction. Respondents identified several areas where the government could curb spending without compromising essential services.

“One of the most immediate ways to address revenue shortfalls is to improve efficiency in government spending and plug revenue leakages,” the report stated, pointing to procurement inefficiencies, salary fraud and loss-making state-owned enterprises (SOEs) as major concerns.

To address procurement waste, respondents recommended “mandating the publication of all awarded contracts, including pricing, scope and selection criteria – via the e-Procurement system – for public scrutiny.”

The survey also called for a comprehensive audit of the public payroll system to remove ghost workers and streamline payroll processes.

In the public sector, businesses support freezing recruitment and limiting wage increases – with 30 percent calling for a ban on luxury vehicle imports for government use. The report suggests privatising or divesting underperforming SOEs to reduce their drain on state resources.

The survey also reflects broad support for government’s proposed 24-hour economy initiative, with 72 percent of respondents believing it will create jobs and drive economic expansion. However, businesses emphasise that its success depends on critical infrastructure improvements.

“For Ghana’s 24-hour economy to work, the right infrastructure, policies and incentives must be in place,” the report noted.

The top priorities include enhancing security and public safety, ensuring reliable electricity supply and improving transportation networks.

Businesses also suggest targetted tax breaks and grants for sectors naturally suited to round-the-clock operations, including healthcare, digital services, logistics and retail.

“This year’s report arrives at a moment of renewed hope… The 2025 budget stands as a canvas to paint this shared ambition, blending innovative policies with practical measures to deliver on the government’s mandate,” added KPMG’s Country Managing Partner, Andy Akoto.
