Survey reveals pregnancy as leading factor in women’s career decisions

0

A recent survey conducted by research firm Konfidants has revealed that 46% of women cite pregnancy as the primary reason for altering their career paths. Other significant factors include extremely painful menstrual periods and miscarriages, highlighting the impact of reproductive health challenges on women’s professional lives.

The findings, presented on Thursday, March 27, underscore the struggles women face in balancing their careers with reproductive health issues.

Gender and Inclusion Advisor Adadzewa Otoo, who presented the report, emphasized the profound effect of these challenges on career decisions.

“So, we see pregnancy as the number one cause for women having to decide on their career. Pregnancy ranks first, followed by very painful menstruation. Some interesting responses from participants included abortion and prolonged bleeding due to PCOS, which is linked to dysmenorrhea or painful menstruation,” she explained.

She also highlighted the prevalence of postpartum depression and other postnatal complications, which are often overlooked but significantly impact women’s well-being and career trajectories.

“One respondent mentioned postpartum depression, which I think is something we do not talk about enough, yet a lot of women go through it. Another person cited postnatal complications as a key factor in career decisions,” she added.

In response to these findings, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) representative Nora Bannerman-Abbott called on businesses to take proactive measures in addressing women’s health challenges in the workplace.

She outlined the development of workplace policies tailored to accommodate women’s health needs and encouraged women to form welfare committees to advocate for better workplace support structures as two key strategies to support women.

“The first action we took was developing policies. These policies provide our women employees with the recognition they need. Once you have specific policies in place as part of your business organization, employees appreciate that they are valued and that their unique needs are acknowledged,” Bannerman-Abbott stated.

She further stressed the importance of welfare committees in creating a supportive environment for women, particularly those who may be hesitant to voice their concerns.

“So, there are always these conversations happening within the committees. You will notice that during the research, some women were shy or reluctant to speak about their experiences. Within the welfare committees, some more outspoken individuals can bring forth the concerns of others,” she added.

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey advocates local vaccine production to secure Ghana’s vaccine self-sufficiency

0

The new CEO of the National Vaccine Institute (NVI), Dr Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey, has pledged the NVI’s continued support to various research institutions in Ghana aimed at building their capacity to support Ghana’s quest to locally manufacture vaccines.

Addressing a delegation from the German Embassy, the European Union (EU), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Charité Medical Center in Berlin, Germany, he stressed the need for advanced training frameworks in virology and immunology that will bolster vaccine research and production, away from the initial focus on viral diagnostics.

The delegation had paid a courtesy call on him at his office at the NVI on Monday, March 24, 2025.

During a brief meeting with the delegation, he praised the ongoing research collaboration between Charité Medical Center in Berlin, Germany, and the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research (KCCR).

The partnership between Charité Medical Center and KCCR has been in place long before the establishment of NVI. Now, Dr Sodzi-Tettey is working to integrate this collaboration into the broader vaccine research and development ecosystem.

By aligning their work with national and international R&D initiatives, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s goal is to enhance the efficiency and impact of vaccine innovation and production.

“Africa’s almost total reliance on imported vaccines has left us highly vulnerable in times of global health crises. This is the reason why under the leadership of the Africa CDC, member states have committed to producing at least 60% of continental vaccine requirements locally, by 2040. This R&D Hub will help to equip Ghana with the capacity to locally research into new candidate vaccines and ultimately develop them as part of the efforts of the government to secure the health of the population,” said Dr. Sodzi-Tettey.

Prof Christian Drosten, head of virology at Charité Medical Center, who was part of the delegation that called on Dr. Sodzi-Tettey, announced plans to expand the research hub at KCCR, incorporating the establishment of basic immunologic and virological laboratory methods, training of junior scientists at masters and doctoral levels, and the provision of support for local manufacturing companies.

Overall, these efforts aim to lead to a robust R&D Hub to strengthen Ghana’s vaccine research, production and pandemic preparedness and response.

The new R&D Hub is expected to achieve the following:

  • Establishing virological and immunological laboratory methods for vaccine research and quality control.
  • Training the first cohort of junior scientists at the doctoral and master’s levels to build a future-proof research ecosystem.
  • Expanding North-South and South-South cooperation in technology transfer and resource-sharing.
  • Collaborating with local pharmaceutical companies to facilitate the transition from basic research to vaccine production.

During the brief meeting with the new NVI CEO, Prof. Drosten disclosed a cost-effective model for training junior scientists to masters and doctoral levels in Ghana, as opposed to sending them away to Germany.

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey agreed, pointing out that this cost-effective model offered the NVI the opportunity to seek the needed resources to expand national research capacity and train more scientists in vaccine research and development beyond the current scope of the Charite-KCCR partnership.

Support for R&D Hub

Daniel Boehme, deputy Head of Cooperation, German Embassy; Timothy Dolan, Team Leader of the Economic, Private Sector and Trade Section of EU delegation in Ghana, and Prof Drosten, all expressed support for the R&D Hub, noting that it fits into the broader objectives of their partnerships with Ghana.

Timothy Dolan, on behalf of the EU, also outlined the EU’s broader support for the pharmaceutical industry in Ghana and to the NVI with both he and Dr. Sodzi-Tettey pledging ongoing collaboration.

Through its Center for Global Health, which is also headed by Prof Drosten, Charité has organized a series of seminars focused on enhancing vaccine uptake and production on the continent.

Woman granted bail after allegedly setting ex-lover’s property on fire

0

A 36-year-old trader accused of unlawfully entering her ex-lover’s home, setting his belongings on fire, and stealing cash has been granted bail by the Enchi District Magistrate Court.

The accused, Ruth Arthur, alias Amina, was granted bail in the sum of GH₵30,000 with two sureties after pleading guilty with an explanation to charges of unlawful entry, causing damage, and stealing.

The presiding judge, Mr. Lawrence Buanor-Buer, initially intended to proceed with sentencing after Ruth’s guilty plea. However, after listening to her explanation, the court reversed its decision and opted to grant her bail.

According to the prosecution, led by General Sergeant Stephen Offei Asante, the complainant, David Anni, alias Nana Atopah, is an Okada rider based in Amonie in the Aowin Municipality. The accused, Ruth, also resides in the same community.

The prosecution explained that Ruth and David had been in a relationship for two years. However, after the tragic loss of their two-month-old child, Ruth’s family objected to their relationship, leading to their separation.

On March 3, 2025, at around 7:10 AM, while the complainant was attending his brother’s wedding at Nyameah, he received a distressing call from his friend, Akwasi. According to Akwasi, Ruth had unlawfully entered David’s room and deliberately set his belongings on fire.

Upon rushing home, the complainant discovered that his room had been forcibly broken into. He immediately checked for his savings of GH₵22,000, but the cash was missing.

Further inspection revealed extensive damage to his property, including a 32-inch Hisense flat-screen television, a Binatone standing fan, Sony speakers, a master decoder, and a double-bed mattress.

Additionally, the accused allegedly destroyed several items in the kitchen, including a container drum, bringing the total estimated cost of the damage to GH₵27,019.

Following a formal complaint, the police accompanied the complainant to the crime scene, where they observed that a double-bed mattress and other personal belongings had been partially burnt.

During police interrogation, Ruth admitted to the offence in her caution statement. She was subsequently charged and arraigned before the court.

The case has been adjourned, and Ruth is expected to reappear in court for further proceedings.

Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters have reportedly reacted with anger following controversial remarks made by former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, about the former Vice President of Ghana and 2024 NPP Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Agyapong, who recently met with a group of lawyers in Kumasi to declare his intention to run for the NPP’s flagbearer position again, claimed that Ghanaians rejected Dr Bawumia at the December 7, 2024, elections due to his Muslim faith and ethnic background.

His comments, however, have ignited a fierce backlash from some party members, with many taking to social media to condemn what they describe as divisive and inflammatory rhetoric.

According to a report by onuaonline.com, several NPP supporters have accused Agyapong of undermining party unity, especially as the party seeks to regroup ahead of the 2028 Election.

Some have recalled his similar tactics during the NPP’s presidential primaries and warned that such behaviour will not be tolerated this time.

Integrate digital skills into the National Development Plan

0

Fred MacBangonluri

President of the Academic City University, Prof. Fred MacBangonluri has urged the government to integrate digital skills into the national development plan to harness the potential of the youth for Ghana’s digital revolution.

Prof. Fred MacBangonluri who made the call when he addressed dozens of youth at the ALX 2025 Youth in Tech Dialogue in Accra said Ghana’s digital revolution should be a national mission that hinges on the talent of the youth.

According to him, achieving significant progress in the country’s digital revolution required the support of the private sector players and Institutions of higher learning.

He said the government could also achieve that by providing tax breaks for tech startups, investing in youth training, hiring local talents, and relooking at the curricula on digital skills to match the needs of the industry.

“There is no option for that. It has to be a collective journey. It must be holistic, it has to be willfully thought about. We need to go at it with a positive mindset. We need affordable Internet access as a national development priority, “he stated.

He also highlighted the need for the youth not only to be consumers of digital content but also to create content, support local startup businesses online, and desist from using digital platforms to engage in acts that are not detrimental to the development of the country.

Prof. MacBangonluri further mentioned that although Ghana’s natural resource wealth such as gold, cocoa, and oil has contributed significantly to the socio-economic development of the country, the government should rather focus on the talent of the youth to drive the country’s digital revolution agenda.

Skills in coding, skills in artificial intelligence, data science and analytics, and digital entrepreneurship. These variables are no longer optional, they are essential. To achieve this we must intentionally focus on integrating coding into the basic education curriculum, ensuring every child can think digitally,” he added.

Nana Darko Asiedu, ALX Country Manager for his part said the company has over the years provided digital skills to enable graduates to become employable in their respective fields of work.

He said ALX, which has a goal of training 3 million ethical and entrepreneurial leaders has already trained over 100,000 youth since 2022 in various tech programmes including software engineering, data science, and AI essential programmes.

The country manager also stated there were already plans in place to increase its enrolment to 150, 000 with a focus on increasing female participants in tech programmes while expanding its scope to various rural communities.

Nana Asiedu further mentioned that the company has over the years focused mainly on University graduates and career professionals, it has expanded the scope to high school graduates to enable them to acquire knowledge in basic digital skills, use of AI tools, and coding among others.

He said such digital training would not only make them become employable individuals, trained to provide solutions globally in the digital space but they will be able to create jobs for themselves.

The tech dialogue held under the theme “Unlocking youth’s potential for Ghana’s Digital transformation” brought together the youth working in the digital space, industry leaders in tech, students, professionals in IT, and academia among others.

Fisheries Ministry suspends licenses of 4 industrial trawl vessels

0

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Fisheries Commission have suspended the fishing licenses of four industrial trawl vessels operating within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The 12-month suspension was due to repeated violations of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625), and the Fisheries Regulations, 2010 (L.I. 1968).

A statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the ministry, indicated that, “The vessels—Meng Xin 10, (Owners: Nassa Co. Ltd.), Florence 2 (Owners: Akrafi Fisheries), as well as Long Xiang 607 and Long Xiang 608 (Owners: Wannimas Complex Co. Ltd.), were found to have engaged in multiple illegal fishing practices, including unauthorised transshipment, dumping of fish, fishing in restricted zones and harvesting of juvenile fish.”

It added that these practices severely threaten Ghana’s marine ecosystem, undermine efforts toward sustainable fisheries management and adversely affect the livelihoods of coastal fishing communities.

“In accordance with Sections 76(1) and 76(2) of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625), which empower the minister to suspend licenses of vessels involved in repeated illegalities, the affected vessels have had their licenses suspended for a period of twelve (12) months, effective 1st April 2025,” part of the statement reasd.

It stated that Ghana’s fisheries sector has long been challenged by overfishing and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities, which continue to endanger marine biodiversity, erode the income of artisanal fishers and compromise national food security.

The Ministry explained that practices such as illegal transshipment, locally known as Saiko, have particularly contributed to the depletion of key fish stocks and damaged the integrity of marine governance.

“Section 132 of Act 625 criminalises illegal transshipment, while Regulation 33(2) of L.I. 1968 explicitly prohibits transshipment between industrial vessels and canoes,” it stated, adding that these violations were not only breaches of domestic law but also contravene international obligations and hinder progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14, which seeks to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

The Ministry further expressed worry that despite ongoing stakeholder engagement, education and regulatory reforms, certain industrial fishing operators continue to act with impunity, reiterating the ministry’s unwavering commitment to strict enforcement of fisheries laws and regulations as part of its mandate to safeguard Ghana’s marine resources.

The Ministry cautioned all fishing operators – industrial, semi-industrial, and artisanal –to comply fully with the provisions of the law, adding that continued violations would attract sanctions including license suspensions, cancellations and legal action.

“The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and the Fisheries Commission remain resolute in its mission to promote responsible and sustainable fisheries management in Ghana for the benefit of present and future generations,” it added.

‘What kind of wickedness is this?’

0

American-based Ghanaian filmmaker, Leila Djansi American-based Ghanaian filmmaker, Leila Djansi

US-based Ghanaian filmmaker Leila Djansi has strongly criticised the excessive corruption among top officials in Ghana and the complicity of some churches in enabling greed and exploitation.

In a passionate Facebook post on March 30, 2025, Djansi expressed her outrage over reports of Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), who was arrested for allegedly diverting $7 million intended for a cybersecurity defence system, built 37 houses, and was caught with his wife stuffing suitcases with cash.

Djansi compared this to the plight of a baby, Doris, whose surgery at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital was postponed due to an oxygen shortage.

“When he was caught, his wife was found stuffing suitcases with cash. Meanwhile, our baby Doris was scheduled for surgery at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in August 2024.

“After fasting for nearly eight hours in preparation, the procedure had to be rescheduled because the unit ran out of oxygen.

“Is this the country you steal from? What kind of wickedness is this?” she wrote.

Djansi also expressed shock that some of the accused were elders in her childhood church.

“When you claim to be a Christian yet steal government money at the expense of the vulnerable, when mothers die in childbirth because there are no proper medical interventions when children suffer and die because treatment is unavailable, and when hospitals run out of oxygen, you need to remember who you are nailing to the cross a second time,” she added.

She condemned religious leaders for celebrating wealth without questioning its source, accusing them of neglecting Christ’s teachings on justice and community.

“And you, the churches that reward wealth without questioning its source, that are always building grand edifices while ignoring the suffering outside your doors. The Christianity Christ preached was about community!

“The hypocrisy of people who claim to follow Christ yet exploit the very people they are supposed to serve is one of the greatest betrayals of not just the faith but of humanity itself.

“You choose to turn a blind eye and prioritise status over righteousness, rendering yourselves complicit. Sitting on your throne chairs and living room sofa pulpits.

“Christianity isn’t about grand buildings or social status; it’s about truth, justice, and love,” she added.

‘Misleading and needless’ – Owusu Bempah’s church debunks information regarding Vice President’s health

Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah (L) and Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang (R) Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah (L) and Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang (R)

Glorious Word Power Ministries International has refuted news circulating on social media indicating that their General Overseer, Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah, prophesied the death of Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

In a press statement issued by the church on March 31, 2025, it noted that the video circulating on social media is an edited compilation of different sermons propagated by some individuals to tarnish the pastor’s image.

The letter further explained that the viral video is an old discussion where the then-Transport Officer at the Jubilee House, Nana Oppong, recounted Apostle Dr. Owusu Bempah’s prophetic revelation and intervention regarding a spiritual attack on then-Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, which ultimately saved his life.

The statement reads:

“We would like to address misleading and distorted snippets from our church service on Sunday, March 30, 2025, that have been circulating on social media. These selectively edited clips falsely suggest that Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah made prophetic statements about the demise of Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

“To clarify, Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah has not stated anywhere that the Vice President of the Republic, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, is going to die.

“Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah referred to a past conversation on Okay FM 101.7, where the morning show host, Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie, engaged with Odeneho Nana Oppong, the then-Transport Officer at the Jubilee House under the previous administration of His Excellencies Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia. In that discussion, Nana Oppong recounted Apostle Dr. Owusu Bempah’s prophetic revelation and intervention regarding a spiritual attack on then-Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, which ultimately saved his life.”

The statement further called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate the issue and arrest and prosecute those spreading such false information.

“It is unfortunate that some bloggers have intentionally misrepresented the facts to fit a false narrative.

“This misinformation is not only misleading but is also needlessly raising tension and causing panic among citizens. We call on the Ghana Police Service and the relevant security agencies to conduct an investigation into this matter,” it added.

Apology is not enough – Financial analyst tells Kennedy Agyapong

0

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong

Financial analyst and economist Scott Bolshevik has expressed doubts about Kennedy Agyapong’s apology, stating that it is insufficient to repair his already damaged reputation.

“You don’t win people’s hearts by being arrogant, insulting, or making threats. You have to be meek, as the Bible says,” Bolshevik noted.

Bolshevik said on X that Agyapong’s apology, which stated, “I apologize to anybody who feels I have offended him,” is vague and insincere.

However, he emphasized that Agyapong’s reputation is already established and that “if you can’t trust them on one thing, you can’t trust them on anything.”

Bolshevik stated that it is difficult to rebuild trust once a reputation has been damaged.

Lionel Messi’s bodyguard banned by MLS

0

Yassine Cheuko and Lionel Messi Yassine Cheuko and Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi’s bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has announced that Major League Soccer (MLS) have banned him from protecting his client on the pitch.

He explained that, as part of his duties, he is supposed to be present on the pitch, especially on the touchline, to safeguard the Argentine captain from being approached by pitch invaders.

The former United States (US) Navy SEAL noted that he disagrees with the ban, as it puts Messi at risk while playing on the pitch in case of an invasion.

Speaking in an interview with House of Highlights, Cheuko fumed about the ban, indicating that the situation was different when the Inter Miami player was playing in Europe.

“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore. I was in Europe for seven years, working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch. I arrived in the United States, and in 20 months of work, 16 people have already invaded the pitch.

“There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi. I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we have to work together. I love helping. I’m not better than anyone, but I have a wealth of experience in Europe. It’s fine, I understand their decision, but I think we could do better,” he said.

The MLS took the decision after Cheuko went viral on several occasions with his rapid sprints from the touchline when invaders approached the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

The association, unhappy with the incidents, decided to bar the bodyguard from stepping foot on the pitch, as the league authorities will have full control of the matchday security but allowed him to fulfil his duties off the pitch.

Ghana’s fight against illegal fishing intensified, four vessels suspended

0

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Fisheries Commission have suspended the fishing licences of four industrial trawl vessels operating within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for repeatedly violating the Fisheries Act and Regulations, including unauthorised trans-shipment, dumping of fish, and harvesting of juvenile fish.

According to a press release issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture disclosed the vessels—Meng Xin 10 (Owners: Nassa Co. Ltd.), Florence 2 (Owners: Akrafi Fisheries), as well as Long Xiang 607 and Long Xiang 608 (Owners: Wannimas Complex Co. Ltd.), were found to have engaged in multiple illegal fishing practices, including unauthorised trans-shipment, dumping of fish, fishing in restricted zones, and harvesting of juvenile fish.

These practices severely threaten Ghana’s marine ecosystem,

undermine efforts toward sustainable fisheries management and adversely affect the livelihoods of coastal fishing communities.

A press release issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture said this became necessary due to repeated violations of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625) and the Fisheries Regulations, 2010 (L.I. 1968).

“In accordance with Sections 76(1) and 76(2) of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625), which empower the Minister to suspend licenses of vessels involved in repeated illegalities, the affected vessels have had their licences suspended for a period of twelve (12) months, effective 1st April 2025,” it added.

Ghana’s fisheries sector has long been challenged by overfishing and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities, which continue to endanger marine biodiversity, erode the income of artisanal fishers and compromise national food security. Practices such as illegal trans-shipment—locally known as Saiko—have particularly contributed to the depletion of key fish stocks and damaged the integrity of marine governance.

The Ministry said, “Section 132 of Act 625 criminalises illegal trans-shipment, while Regulation 33(2) of L.I. 1968 explicitly prohibits trans-shipment between industrial vessels and canoes. These violations are not only breaches of domestic law but also contravene international obligations and hinder progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14, which seeks to conserve and sustainably use the ocean’s marine resources”.

It noted that “Despite ongoing stakeholder engagement, education and regulatory reforms, certain industrial fishing operators continue to act with impunity.

The Ministry reiterates its unwavering commitment to strict enforcement of fisheries laws and regulations as part of its mandate to safeguard Ghana’s marine resources.

“The Ministry takes this opportunity to caution all fishing operators, industrial, semi-industrial, and artisanal, to comply fully with the provisions of the law.

“The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Fisheries Commission remain resolute in their mission to promote responsible and sustainable fisheries management in Ghana for the benefit of present and future generations,” they assured.

‘Our election loss is an opportunity to refresh and strategize’

Former Deputy MASLOC Director, Kwabena Asamoah Former Deputy MASLOC Director, Kwabena Asamoah

Former Deputy MASLOC Director, Kwabena Asamoah, has called on party members and TESCON members to urgently reflect on past mistakes and reorganize for victory in the next election cycle.

Addressing members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) during a general meeting and freshers orientation, the former parliamentary aspirant acknowledged the pain of the party’s recent loss but emphasized that it also presented an opportunity for profound introspection and strategic realignment.

“This is the time to reflect and unite. Losing doesn’t mean we should give up; no. This is the time we need to reorganize ourselves as one unit. Let’s forgive ourselves and strategize,” he said.

Asamoah implored members to persevere in their commitment to the party’s cause, emphasizing the importance of unity in developing strategies for future success.

He urged members to set aside any bitterness, work diligently for the party’s well-being, and recognize that unity is essential for regaining power.

“Giving up because we think we’ve lost the election is not the best way to go. That’s very wrong. This is an opportunity for us to look into things very carefully, reorganize ourselves, and strategize,” Asamoah concluded.

He also donated an undisclosed sum of money to support TESCON members.

Govt suspends licenses of four industrial vessels for illegal fishing

0

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and the Fisheries Commission have announced the suspension of fishing licences for four industrial trawl vessels operating within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) due to repeated violations of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625) and the Fisheries Regulations, 2010 (L.I. 1968).

The vessels involved include Meng Xin 10 (owned by Nassa Co. Ltd.), Florence 2 (owned by Akrafi Fisheries), and Long Xiang 607 and Long Xiang 608 (owned by Wannimas Complex Co. Ltd.).

These vessels were found to have engaged in various illegal fishing practices such as unauthorised transshipment, dumping of fish, fishing in restricted zones, and harvesting juvenile fish.

The Fisheries Ministry in a statement issued on Tuesday April 1 noted that these activities pose serious threats to Ghana’s marine ecosystem, compromise sustainable fisheries management, and adversely impact the livelihoods of coastal fishing communities.

In accordance with Sections 76(1) and 76(2) of the Fisheries Act, which grant the Minister authority to suspend licenses for repeated illegalities, the affected vessels’ licenses have been suspended for 12 months, effective April 1, 2025.

Illegal fishing practices, particularly transshipment (locally known as Saiko), have been a long-standing challenge for Ghana’s fisheries sector. These activities deplete fish stocks, erode artisanal fishers’ incomes, and threaten national food security.

Moreover, they violate international obligations and hinder progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 14, which aims to conserve and sustainably use marine resources.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement of fisheries laws to safeguard marine resources. “Continued violations will attract sanctions, including license suspensions, cancellations, and legal action,” the Ministry warned. It also urged all fishing operators—industrial, semi-industrial, and artisanal—to comply with the law.

Despite ongoing stakeholder engagement and regulatory reforms, certain operators continue to act with impunity. The Ministry emphasised its dedication to promoting sustainable fisheries management for the benefit of present and future generations.

He praised the vision and leadership of Professor Enyonam Yao Kwawukume, whose dedication to medical education has significantly impacted Ghana’s healthcare landscape.

The minister acknowledged FHU’s achievements, including the training of over 100 doctors and more than 1,000 nurses who are serving in various parts of the country. He emphasised the importance of addressing the deficit of medical practitioners, especially in rural and underserved areas, and proposed a potential collaboration with FHU to train local doctors willing to serve their communities.

Mr Iddrisu also reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting academic freedom, assuring that the NDC administration would not interfere with university governance.

He revealed plans to reconstitute the councils of various universities in the coming days. Additionally, he announced the imminent inauguration of the National Research Fund, which will support academic research, including projects initiated by FHU.

Prof. Kwawukume, the Founder and Vice-Chancellor of FHU, highlighted the university’s growth from a college to Ghana’s first private university with a medical school, reflecting its commitment to healthcare delivery, research advancement, and global competitiveness.

He noted the university’s recent infrastructural developments, including a state-of-the-art dialysis unit, a modern dental facility, upgraded surgical theatres, and student-friendly amenities like air-conditioned lecture halls and a multipurpose field.

The Vice-Chancellor proudly shared that FHU has trained thousands of healthcare professionals, some of whom have earned recognition across the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Northern regions. He also emphasised FHU’s inclusion in the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), which allows its graduates to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

Prof. Kwawukume called on the government to collaborate with FHU in training more doctors locally, ensuring they are both highly skilled and culturally attuned to Ghana’s healthcare needs. He also highlighted FHU’s growing international collaborations with institutions like the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia, which facilitate student and faculty exchanges.

Mr Iddrisu lauded FHU’s research initiatives, particularly its efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic when it produced FDA-approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for frontline workers. He assured the university of government support to continue its impactful work, including expanding research and training programs.

With its rapid development, commitment to research, and practical healthcare solutions, Family Health University is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of medical education and healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Tap into DRIP to maintain Akyem Adubease road

Veteran actor, Kofi Adu, better known as Agya Koo, has appealed to relevant authorities to explore the DRIP project to restore the Akyem Adubease Road to good working condition.

The District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) was launched by the Akufo-Addo-led government in 2024 to provide MMDAs with state-of-the-art equipment and technical training to boost their capacities for road maintenance.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on X, on April 1, 2025, Agya Koo called on authorities to help improve the state of the Akyem Adubease Road.

He indicated that though the road was not damaged per se, it was endangered by bushes and heaps of sand on both sides.

“As you can see, the road is in good condition. However, when you look at the heaps of sands on the shoulders of the road, it has taken over portions of the road from both sides.

“The weeds are also overgrown and this has made the available space for vehicles narrow. This could result in carnage; so, authorities should tap into DRIP to clear the mess here to avoid any unforeseen dangers in the future,” he said.

Supervision gaps contribute to many abandoned projects

Ahmed Ibrahim is Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim is Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called for stringent measures to monitor government-funded projects to help reduce the high number of abandoned projects.

Speaking on State of Affairs with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on GhOne TV, he said Ghana currently has over 2000 uncompleted projects, with the Coastal Development Authority (CODA) alone accounting for more than 700.

According to Ibrahim, many projects are left unfinished due to the lack of direct oversight from relevant authorities, noting that development agencies, which should be ensuring project completion, are not under the direct supervision of his ministry, making accountability difficult.

“The poor and abandoned projects that we have are because of non-performance… If I tell you the state of projects under the development authorities, you will cry,” he stated.

The minister noted that GETFund, which is responsible for funding educational infrastructure, struggles with monitoring projects in remote areas because its headquarters is in Accra.

“GETFund awards a contract in Zebilla, but they cannot be going there regularly to monitor,” he explained, adding that a lack of consistent supervision leads to stalled and poorly executed projects.

To address this issue, Ibrahim proposed that Members of Parliament (MPs) should take on a more active role in monitoring all GETFund projects in their constituencies, not just those they initiate.

He argued that this approach would improve accountability and ensure projects are completed on time.

“Let every MP be monitoring all the GETFund projects in their constituency and make sure they are properly done,” he said.

However, Ahmed Ibrahim also pointed to financial constraints as a key challenge in ensuring effective supervision.

He revealed that only $150,000 is allocated annually for monitoring projects across the country, an amount that translates to roughly $12,500 per month.

He stressed that this budget is insufficient to cover transportation, fuel, and multiple site visits needed for thorough inspections.

“You need to go not once, not twice… You go, inspect, come back, and report,” he explained.

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has indicated that he has received calls on the whereabouts of some of the missing ECG containers.

He made this disclosure following a proposal for a forensic committee to probe the disappearance of Electricity of Ghana (ECG) containers from the Tema Port.

The contents of the missing containers include vital electrical equipment for national power distribution.

According to Jinapor, he has received tip-offs on possible locations of the containers, including warehouses and factories.

“This morning, I received a couple of calls on other areas, in terms of warehouses and factories, where these ECG containers can be found and so we will be moving into action this morning,” he said during an interview on GH Today on March 31, 2025.

Jinapor also thanked the public for showing interest and demanding accountability from the managers of the state-owned facility.

“I’m very happy in the interest that Ghanaians are showing. It means that they want accountability. They want the right thing done, they want us to trail the whereabouts of these containers and to hold those who are behind this development to account and that’s exactly what we are doing. Let me thank the public,” he added.

In line with efforts to recover the missing ECG containers, the minister has proposed a forensic committee to locate persons behind the nefarious acts, while assuring swift action to apprehend those found complicit in this matter.

“But beyond that, we also need a small forensic committee that will trail back these containers. We need to track them using their unique identification numbers or serial numbers,” he said.

He assured that the proposed forensic committee would ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation process.
