Private health facilities justify decision to suspend services over NHIS arrears

0

The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has instructed all its members to charge National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders for services related to unpaid claims.

The association cited prolonged delays in reimbursement, with some private facilities reportedly owed up to eight months.

In an interview with Citi News, Deputy General Secretary of PHFAoG, Aaron Nyamekye, stated that the outstanding arrears have placed significant financial strain on private health providers, affecting their ability to operate effectively.

“Even though government through the NHIA has released a statement comforting the service providers that indeed they are going to pay for the services and they have started the process. We have no qualms about that. But in the end, what we want to see is evidence that the payments are in the accounts of the service providers.

“If not, we are going to stand by our action and we are even going to intensify it in the coming days. What we are going to announce to the general public is our crusade on everybody taking money from clients who visit their facilities because there is absolutely no money to run healthcare. That is the current situation.”

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to auction $120 million to Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) in the second quarter of 2025.

Each auction will offer $20 million, bringing the total allocation for the second quarter to $120 million.

The auctions form part of targeted interventions by the Central Bank to manage volatility in the foreign exchange market, especially in the downstream petroleum sector where dollar demand is typically high.

According to the published calendar, the first auction is set for April 10, with subsequent auctions on April 29, May 14 , May 28, June 12 and June 26.

“The Bank of Ghana announces for the information of all Authorised Foreign Exchange Dealing Banks, the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) FX forward Auction Calendar for the second quarter of 2025. We’re committed to bridging digital literacy skills gap – ALX Country Manager

0

ALX Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to helping bridge the digital literacy gap in the country, with an ambitious plan to equip about 150,000 youth, including those in rural communities, with 21st-century digital skills this year.

This pledge was made by the Country Manager, Nana Darko Asiedu, during the Youth and Tech Dialogue (YTD), a high-impact event, which brought together industry leaders, educators, and young innovators under the theme “Unlocking Youth Potential for Ghana’s Digital Transformation.”

“At ALX, we believe that digital skills should be acquired at an early age. This year, we plan to train about 150,000 youth, with a special focus on high school graduates and rural communities,” he stated.

Highlighting the significance of YTD, Mr. Asiedu explained that the event was designed to unite key players within Ghana’s technology ecosystem and showcase its impact on youth development.

“We observed that several players within the ecosystem were working in silos. YTD serves as a platform to bring them together, highlight the power of technology, and demonstrate how it is positively transforming the lives of Ghanaian youth. Since YTD is hosted by ALX, we are showcasing our own talents, featuring them as panelists and roundtable discussion participants to drive crucial industry conversations,” he said.

When asked about the prospects of transitioning Ghanaian youth from digital consumers to creators and employers, Nana Darko Asiedu expressed optimism saying:

“Ghana’s digital market is poised for significant growth. Based on the progress we’ve witnessed over the past five years, we believe the ecosystem will scale up rapidly.”

On his part, President of Academic City University College, Professor Fred McBagonluri, urged Ghanaian youth to take an active role in the country’s digital transformation by becoming digital creators rather than mere consumers.

“The world, as we all know, is racing towards a digital future. Thus, we cannot afford for Ghana’s youth to be simply digital consumers; they must be digital creators and must actively participate in the nation’s digital transformation,” he emphasized.

Delivering the keynote address Prof. McBagonluri highlighted the crucial role of young people in shaping Ghana’s digital revolution.

“Our greatest asset is no longer gold, cocoa, or oil—it is the energy, creativity, and talent of our youth. Today, over 60% of Ghana’s population is under the age of 25, making this a goldmine of potential for the country’s digital revolution,” he remarked.

While acknowledging the youth’s role in driving digital transformation, he stressed the need for capacity building and adequate support to empower them. He advocated for intentional efforts, including the integration of coding into the basic education curriculum, expansion of access to tech hubs and online learning, and strategic partnerships with global tech giants to provide certifications and hands-on training. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing affordable internet access and enhancing digital infrastructure in schools and communities by relevant stakeholders.

Furthermore, Prof. McBagonluri called on relevant stakeholders to incorporate strategies into Ghana’s national development plan to unlock the full potential of the youth for digital transformation.

“Building a transformative digital revolution is not just the responsibility of the youth—it is a national mission. It must be embedded in our national development plan with clear milestones and evaluation metrics. The government must take the lead, supported by private sector players and educational institutions,” he stated.

A highlight of the event was a panel discussion on the topic: Tech Forward Building a Collaborative Youth and Tech Ecosystem. Together, Dr. Vandyck Lomotey, Country Director for Generations Ghana, Constance Swaniker-Founder & President of Design Technology Institute, Esinam Adorkor-Programme Partner for Digital Economy, Mastercard Foundation, as panellists with Marie-Noelle Nwakolo as moderator, churned out insightful nuggets. The insights focused on the role of collaboration in driving digital transformation, strategies for bridging the skills gap in tech, and opportunities for young innovators and entrepreneurs.

Organized by ALX, Youth & Tech Dialogue is set to become an annual event. In the long term, it aims to serve as a key platform for fostering youth participation in Ghana’s digital transformation journey.

Mahama needs prayers in turning Ghana’s fortunes around – Gender Minister

0

With expectations running high for the Mahama-led administration, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Naa Momo Lartey, has called for fervent prayers for President John Mahama.

She emphasised that special prayers will invoke God’s grace and favour to sustain the President as he works to transform Ghana’s fortunes.

Naa Momo Lartey, who is also the Krowor MP and a member of the Assemblies of God Church, appealed to the 7th Regional Council Meeting of the Greater Accra East Region of the church, held at Shai Hills, where she was the special guest of honour.

“We prayed for grace, mercies, and favour to ascend to the highest office of the land, and the Lord granted it unto us—we are now the light, and everyone is looking up to us,” she told the congregation.

“While we hold the torchlight for Ghana, it is upon all of us to hold up the hands of John Dramani Mahama so they remain raised—so that the sun will stand still, the light will shine, and the world will see that he has truly been called to lead,” she added.

The Minister praised the church’s theme for the year, “Pray Without Ceasing for Supernatural Manifestation,” describing it as timely and fitting, especially following last year’s focus on “Sending the Light.”

She noted that continuous prayer is essential to sustain the “light” needed for the effective functioning of the executive, judiciary, and legislature.

Reflecting on her presence at last year’s event with then-candidate Mahama, Naa Momo underscored the role of Christians in leadership and the need for their influence to reflect in national development.

“People will come to believe that when men and women of faith occupy high office, the country will prosper and enjoy peace. Our prayer now is for sustainability.”

She further encouraged the church to pray for Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, particularly in light of her current health condition.

Also addressing the congregation, the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam, stressed the importance of intercession for the nation.

“It’s evident that human effort alone cannot redeem the country—we need divine intervention. Prayer must not replace hard work, but we must also fulfil our Christian obligation as law-abiding citizens,” he said.

“As the light of the nation, we must contribute our quota to national development and reject the vices that plague society,” Rev. Wengam added.

He also announced that Ghana will host the World Assemblies of God Congress in 2026—a major event expected to boost the country’s hospitality sector and economy. He called on state agencies and partners to support preparations for this global gathering.

Regional Superintendent Rev. Andrews Nelson Awintia reflected on the theme from the previous year, which urged members to “send the light.” This year, he said, the focus is on making prayer central in every aspect of life.

“With 13 districts, over 60,000 members, and 500 pastors under my leadership, it is my responsibility to lead our people back to a life of prayer. Prayer will bring unity and peace to our homes, our churches, and our nation,” he said.

“This is a call to righteousness, peace, stability, and even economic progress.”

As a token of appreciation, Naa Momo Lartey presented GH¢100,000 from President Mahama and GH¢20,000 from herself to the church for its continued support.

The church, led by Rev. Stephen Wengam and other senior pastors, presented a citation in her honour.

Defiant Trump and officials vow to stay course as countries scramble over tariffs

0

US President Donald Trump and his advisers have defended sweeping tariffs on imports and vowed to stay the course, despite market turmoil and calls to avoid a trade war.

In a series of television interviews, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent played down recent stock market falls and Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, insisted reciprocal tariffs would be implemented as planned.

Bessent said there was “no reason” to expect a recession as a result of the turmoil. “This is an adjustment process,” he said.

Meanwhile, another top adviser, Kevin Hassett, said more than 50 countries have contacted Trump to try to negotiate a deal.

All three major stock indexes in the US plunged more than 5% on Friday, while the S&P 500 dropped almost 6% in the worst week for the US stock market since 2020.

In a sign market fragility could continue this week, Saudi Arabia’s stock exchange – which trades on Sundays – ended nearly 7% lower, its biggest daily loss since the pandemic, state-owned media said.

US banking giant JP Morgan has predicted a 60% chance of a US and global recession following Trump’s tariffs announcement.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening, Trump said European and Asian countries are “dying to make a deal”.

He also pushed back against a reporter’s inquiry about American consumers’ “pain threshold” as fears of steep price increases and a market recession grow.

“I think your question is so stupid,” he told the reporter. “I don’t want anything to go down. But sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.”

Challenged about the turmoil, Lutnick told CBS News on Sunday that the 10% “baseline” tariff on all imports, which came into effect a day earlier, will definitely “stay in place for days and weeks”.

Lutnick went on say the steeper reciprocal tariffs were still on track.

Higher customs tariffs on roughly 60 countries, dubbed the “worst offenders”, are due to come into effect on Wednesday, 9 April.

When asked about these tariffs, Lutnick said they were coming. “[Trump] announced it and he wasn’t kidding,” he said.

Lutnick also defended tariffs imposed on two tiny Antarctic islands populated only by penguins, saying it was to close “loopholes” for countries such as China to “ship through”.

‘Maximum leverage’

Bessent used an interview with Meet the Press on NBC to argue that Trump had “created maximum leverage for himself, and more than 50 countries have approached the administration about lowering their non-tariff trade barriers, lowering their tariffs, and stopping currency manipulation”.

Kevin Hassett, another top economic adviser to Trump, also repeated the claim that more than 50 countries wanted to begin negotiations. Neither Hassett nor Bessent explained which countries had been in touch.

Elsewhere, Indonesia and Taiwan have said over the weekend that they will not impose retaliatory tariffs after the US announced a 32% levy on imports from both countries.

Vietnam’s leader, To Lam, has asked Trump to delay a 46% duty on Vietnamese exports to the US by “at least 45 days”, according to a letter seen by news agency AFP and the New York Times.

However, China announced on Friday that it will impose a 34% tariff on all US imports, beginning on Thursday 10 April.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warned on Saturday that “the world as we knew it has gone”.

Starmer said the UK government will keep pushing for an economic deal with the US that avoids some of the tariffs.

A Downing Street spokesman added Starmer and new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed in a phone call that “an all-out trade war is in no-one’s interest”.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet Trump for trade talks in Washington DC.

Netanyahu, speaking to reporters as he boarded a plane-bound for the US, said he is “the first international leader that is meeting with Trump” since the new tariffs were introduced.

He says this shows their “personal connection and the connection between our countries that is so essential in this time”.

Reuters Protesters in New York hold signs that say 'hands off'
Anti-Trump protests were held in dozens of US cities, in part over tariffs

Anti-Trump protests were held in cities across the US over the weekend, in the largest nationwide show of opposition since the president took office in January.

Hundreds of thousands of people turned out in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC, among other cities, with protesters citing grievances with Trump’s agenda ranging from social to economic issues.

Trump has urged the US to “hang tough” after the market turmoil.

Bushmeat traders, hunters launch association to regulate activities

0

Traders in Bushmeat and the hunters have launched the National Bushmeat Association of Ghana to effectively regulate their business activities.

It is also to promote the sustainability of the bushmeat industry and benefit key actors in the industry and biodiversity conservation.

Bushmeat is meat from wildlife species hunted for human consumption and sold in notable markets such as Atwemonom in Kumasi, Tarkoradi Market, Techiman and the Kantamanto markets.

It is a primary source of fresh animal protein and income to hunters and the traders.

In Ghana, types of bushmeat hunted include monkeys, bats, grass cutter, antelope and giant rats.

Madam Comfort Badu, the Queenmother of the Atwemonom Bushmeat Traders Association, and President of the National Association, said it would help educate hunters who used dubious means to hunt by drawing them closer. ‘Some hunters use carbide to hunt in the wild, getting those people in the Association will prevent them from engaging in such practices. The health of the citizenry is essential,” she stated.

Madam Badu said the Association would ensure that the bushmeat industry could continue to exist to benefit stakeholders as well as ensure the safety of consumers and animals in the wild.

She said the Association was also to foster unity, facilitate skills for members, regulate prices and avoid hoarding of meat, help promote food safety and to help facilitate conservation of new lives.

The President recommended bushmeat to diabetic and hypertensive patients, explaining that the animals chewed grass, so their meat was healthy for humans.

Mrs Monica Quansah, the President, Kantamanto Bushmeat Traders Association, said bush fires displaced the animals in the wild leading to the extinction of various species.

That affected their businesses since there would be lack of games for sale, she said.

Mr Patrick Essumang, Secretary of the Association encouraged the media to reach out to them with questions instead of misinforming the public about bushmeat.

The elected Executives are Madam Comfort Badu, President, Mr Yaw Fosu Vice President, Mr Patrick Essumang Secretary, Mrs Monica Quansah Organising Secretary, Mr Ishmael Asibi, Assistant Organising Secretary and Grace Tiwaah, Treasurer.

President urged to nominate Hajia Fatima as Berekum MCE

0

The Bono Regional Women’s Organisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to nominate Hajia Fatima Binta Abubakar as the Berekum Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The 12 constituency Women Organisers from the region said Hajia Fatima had the development of the municipality at heart and knew the challenges confronting the area.

Presser

At a press conference at Berekum, the Dormaa West Constituency Women’s Organiser of the NDC, Hajia Asetu Banda, recounted Hajia Fatima’s unwavering commitment, loyalty, sacrifices and significant contributions to the party, particularly during the 2024 general election.

She said Hajia Fatima played a crucial role in the election, leading to the party’s historic victory in the region, especially the winning of the Berekum East seat.

Currently, Hajia Fatima is the Regional Women’s Organiser of the NDC and Presiding Member (PM) of the Berekum Municipal Assembly.

She was among the three persons, namely Kingsford Atta-Owusu and Amo Appau Wonder, who were shortlisted for the position at the end of the vetting process.

Hajia Banda explained that her dedication and commitment to the NDC contributed significantly to the party’s victory in the Berekum East seat, which remained elusive since the tenure of Mr Owusu Acheampong.

She said Hajia Fatima also worked hard to organise all women in the region to secure 11 parliamentary seats out of the 12 in the region, asserting that the delay to nominate her as Berekum MCE had demoralised the party, mainly women in the region.

The acting Women’s Organiser of the Concerned Assembly Members of Ghana (CAMG), Salamatu Adams, said it was fair that Hajia Fatima be appointed for the position because of her commitment to work.

She said she also had a spirit of unity to bring all stakeholders, including traditional leaders to redevelop the municipality.

Mrs Adams expressed surprise as to how Hajia Fatima managed to mobilise women in the region during the 2024 general election.

She was optimistic that she would deliver if given the mandate to serve because of her records as the Regional Women Organiser, Assembly Member and PM.

“We want President Mahama to act now. Our sister, Hajia Fatima, has worked for these positions and deserves to be appointed without further delay,” she said.

Background

In the Bono Region, Berekum East and Sunyani West municipalities were not part of the first batch of names released for the positions of metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) dated March 26, 2025, by the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim.

It was in light of this that the constituency women organisers held the press conference to express their concerns about President Mahama’s inability to nominate Hajia Fatima for the Berekum MCE position.

Disability advocate pushes for fair funding and accountability

0

Mr Auberon Jeleel Odoom, National Coordinator of Inclusion Ghana and Secretary General of the Africa Disability Forum, has proposed independent watchdog groups to track government commitments, enforce disability laws, and ensure that funds are used effectively.

He also suggested transparent donor-Organisation of Persons with Disability (OPD) engagements, ensuring that funding priorities align with real needs.

Mr Odoom was a member of a panel that discussed: “Shrinking Aid & Disability Inclusion” at the Global Disability Summit (GDS) 2025.

The Global Disability Summit is underway in Berlin, Germany.

The Global Disability Summit aims to galvanize global efforts to realize disability inclusion around the world.

It is a mechanism bringing together a wide variety of high-level stakeholders, engaging and discussing the progress in disability inclusion: governments, multilateral agencies, the private sector, academia and civil society organizations, organizations of persons with disabilities, and foundations.

Mr. Odoom, a participant of the summit, told the Ghana News Agency that there was the need for a long-term technical support to create level playing field.

“Partnerships must amplify, not replace, the voices of marginalized OPDs,” Mr. Odoom emphasized, calling for financial management, governance, and advocacy training to strengthen OPD autonomy.

He said there was the need for a shift from short-term, project-based funding to unrestricted, multi-year core support, guaranteeing OPD stability and long-term impact.

He also called on donors to hire persons with disabilities in their agencies and make sure to consult them to shape funding strategies and disability-inclusive policies.

Trump’s tariffs: It’s time for Africans to do more business together – Ghana

0

The Ghanaian foreign affairs minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said there is no better time than now for Africans to begin doing more business together.

This follows the Donald Trump administration’s sweeping tariffs on African countries and the continuous dwindling aid from major foreign partners.

Ablakwa, who is on a three-day working visit to Nigeria, disclosed this while speaking at a reception organised for him at the weekend by Mobus Properties Limited, the owners of River Park Estate, in Abuja.

SPONSOR AD

He said that with the fresh tariffs and aid cut, African countries must look inward to survive.

“There is an opportunity within the current geopolitics to make African governments wake up to be more self-dependent, more reliant, and buoyant about supporting local businesses, even at the government-to-government level,” he said.

Ablakwa said business between African countries is below 20 percent, calling on them to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to improve the economy of the continent.

“The time has come for Africans to do more business amongst ourselves, to trade more amongst ourselves. And that was the whole vision behind the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“If you look at the statistics, we don’t do business amongst ourselves. It’s below 20 per cent. If you look at intra-European trade, there’s an excess of 60 per cent. It is the same for intra-Asia trade.

“We need to collapse those artificial barriers and invest in the business ecosystem, creating opportunities, nurturing young entrepreneurs, and we also need to consciously promote made in Africa,” he said.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Mobus Properties Limited, Kojo Ansah Mensah, said River Park had contributed over $250 million to Nigeria’s GDP.

“While global partnerships are vital, the greatest catalyst for our growth lies within our subregion. River Park Estate stands as evidence: Over 75 per cent of our workforce is Nigerian, 20 per cent Ghanaian, and 5 per cent from other ECOWAS nations.

“Together, we’ve generated thousands of jobs, spurred ancillary industries, and contributed over $250 million to Nigeria’s GDP. This is the power of intra-African collaboration.

“Let River Park be a blueprint—a clarion call for Ghanaian and Nigerian businesses to invest boldly in one another’s markets,” Mensah said.

PSG secure Ligue 1 title with 6 games to spare after victory over Angers

0

Manager Luis Enrique has stated that Paris Saint-Germain are “motivated to try to finish the season unbeaten” after securing a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title.

PSG only needed a draw at home against Angers to confirm an unassailable lead over second-placed Monaco.

However, teenage winger Désiré Doué’s stunning 55th-minute volley from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s cross sealed all three points for PSG at the Parc des Princes, ensuring the win against his hometown club.

If PSG manage to avoid defeat in their remaining six matches, they would become only the seventh team from Europe’s top five leagues to complete an entire league season unbeaten. They would join the ranks of Bayer Leverkusen (2024), Juventus (2012), Arsenal (2004), AC Milan (1992), Perugia (1979), and Preston North End (1889).

Luis Enrique’s side are also closing in on Nantes’ Ligue 1 record of 32 unbeaten games from the start of the 1994-95 season, but the manager is determined to go the distance.

Luis Enrique’s side have won 23 and drawn five of their 28 league matches so far this season

“Nobody has done that in France before, so that’s something we want to achieve,” Enrique said. “That would help us in the Champions League and the Coupe de France.”

“Celebrating a title in early April shows that we’ve reached a very high level this season. We’ve achieved this target, but we have more games to play.”

PSG will face Aston Villa for a spot in the Champions League semi-finals after overcoming Liverpool in the last 16, while they also have a Coupe de France final against Reims at the end of May.

Gonçalo Ramos and Vitinha both came close to scoring in the first half against Angers, before Doué’s clinical finish secured PSG’s 11th title in the past 13 seasons and their 13th top-flight crown overall.

“It’s crazy, I’m very happy,” said captain Marquinhos, speaking to beIN Sports. “The titles will remain in history. We have the ambition to win everything. When we don’t win the French championship, it hurts. That has happened to me twice.”

“The team deserves to win. It’s in our DNA to give everything on the field, to have an aggressive philosophy, to sweat for the jersey in every match, no matter the opponent. It’s nice to see the supporters happy.”

With a 26-point lead over Monaco, this is only the third time a team has won Ligue 1 with so many matches left to play. Laurent Blanc’s PSG side triumphed with eight to go in 2016 and Lyon achieved the same with six games remaining in 2007.

Blanc’s PSG team won the league in mid-March nine years ago, making them the only outfit to clinch the title earlier in the calendar year than Enrique’s current vintage.

PSG may have lost major names such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in recent seasons, but a more measured approach in the transfer market – which has seen them bring in Doue, Willian Pacho, Joao Neves and former Napoli winger Kvaratskhelia – appears to be bearing fruit domestically and in Europe.

Having already beaten Monaco in the French Supercup in early January, they could end the season with four trophies.

The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) has presented a memorandum to the Constitution Review Committee (CRC), outlining key proposals for constitutional amendments and institutional reforms.

The presentation took place on Friday during a sitting of the CRC in Accra. IDEG’s memorandum highlights proposed reforms in four key areas: Local Governance, Political Parties, Public Service, and Public Enterprises. [ . . . ] The CRC, established by President John Dramani Mahama in January 2025 as part of his campaign pledge, is currently soliciting views and recommendations from citizens, institutions, and civil society organizations across the country.

With a six-month mandate, the committee is tasked with reviewing Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, addressing gaps, and providing actionable recommendations to the government. The exercise also includes revisiting earlier works, such as the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee.

IDEG’s submission forms part of a broader national effort to strengthen democratic governance through inclusive and participatory constitutional reform.

In-form Dreams FC extended their unbeaten run to seven games yesterday after hammering visiting GoldStars 2-0 at their favourite Tuba Astro Turf Park.

So emphatic was the victory that the homesters had sealed the deal by the end of the first half, making it extremely difficult for their opponents to recover.

After surviving an early scare from GoldStars’ Richard Amon Kotey, Dreams FC took over and dominated play with their determined game till the 36th minute when their efforts were rewarded through a cheeky goal by young enterprising striker, Abdul Razak Salifu.

The goal was masterminded by witty Kofi Marshah who turned the GoldStars defence inside-out before setting up predating Salifu to head home the opener.

Captain marvel, Joseph Esso, nearly doubled the lead for Dreams FC seven minutes later but his powerful shot was pushed to corner by goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi to the relief of Coach Frimpong Manso and the away fans.

However, Coach Abdul Karim Zito’s side could not be denied just before the break when Izdeen Mohammed drove in a screamer from a Musibau Aziz set-up.

The visitors revamped their squad after recess in a frantic bid to find the equaliser, but goalkeeper Gidios Aseako and substitute Richmond Tetteh proved impregnable.

In the 57th minute, Salifu, who was adjudged the Most Valuable Player just like last Wednesday’s game against Bechem United which saw him scoring the only goal, had goalkeeper Kobi at his mercy, but he missed target narrowly from a Musibau pass.

In the heat of the exchanges, Accra-based referee Julian Nunoo was compelled to caution Gideon Anaba and Chris Guede of GoldStars and Dreams FC, respectively, for rough play in the dying minutes.

With nominations officially opened on March 28 and set to close on April 18, the race for key positions within the GOC is heating up ahead of the highly anticipated elective congress on April 26 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

In a significant move, Mr Sahnoon has also thrown his weight behind Richard Akpokavie’s bid for the GOC presidency, setting the stage for a fiercely contested battle. The position has been left open following the decision of outgoing GOC

He outlined his vision for a third term, emphasising the need to strengthen the role of the GOC Executive Committee in decision-making, leverage Olympic Solidarity platforms to boost athlete development, promote gender equity in sports, and enhance sporting infrastructure across the country.

Mr Sahnoon urged the sporting fraternity to rally behind Mr Akpokavie’s candidacy, citing his distinguished service as GOC General Secretary, his tenure as President of the Ghana Hockey Association, and his steadfast commitment to governance excellence.

“His proven track record, coupled with his unwavering dedication to integrity and progress, makes him the ideal leader to take our organisation to new heights,” he declared. “Let us unite behind a vision that puts the future of Ghanaian sports first.”

Ghana’s national U-15 football team has been crowned champions of the 2025 Mondialito Promise tournament after an emphatic 4-1 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the final on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

The young Ghanaian side, coached by Yaw Preko, dominated the competition from start to finish, showcasing flair, discipline and clinical finishing throughout the tournament in Israel.

After notching two wins on the opening day, the team continued their fine form into the second day with a solid 2-0 win over Maccabi Petah Tikva, followed by a commanding 4-0 triumph over Hapoel Tel Aviv to seal their place in the final.

In a thrilling finale that was a repeat of the opening match, Ghana once again proved too strong for Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Goals from Robinho Gavi, James Ofori, Ebenezer Adjei and Abdulai Aziz Issah secured the win, with Maccabi grabbing a late consolation in the final minute.

Ghana’s sensational winger, John Andor, was named Best Player of the Tournament, capping off a stellar performance across the competition.

The award recognised his outstanding creativity, pace and influence on the team’s attacking play.

Coach Preko lauded his team’s effort and discipline, noting that the tournament win reflected the growing potential and talent in Ghana’s youth football structure.

Elton John ‘can’t watch sons play rugby’ after eyesight loss

0

Sir Elton John has said he can’t see his sons playing rugby after an infection last summer left him struggling with his eyesight.

“I can’t see TV, I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer,” the 78-year-old superstar told The Times.

“It has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up. It’s distressing,” he added.

In September, the singer wrote on Instagram that a “severe” infection had left him with “only limited vision” in one eye, adding that his recovery would “take time”.

Sir Elton and his filmmaker husband, David Furnish, have two sons, Zachary and Elijah.

The songwriter said he “can’t see the telly”, adding: “I haven’t been able to see anything since last July.”

He admitted he does get “emotional” about his sight loss.

“But you have to get used to it, because I’m lucky to have the life I have. I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here,” he said, pointing at his left eye.

“So you say to yourself, just get on with it.”

Sir Elton previously said he’d been unable to finish his new album due to his eyesight issues.

In November, he said “it’s been a while since I’ve done anything”.

But on Friday, he released his new collaborative album with US musician Brandi Carlile, Who Believes In Angels?

The pair worked with producer Andrew Watt and his long-term songwriting partner Bernie Taupin on the album.

Sir Elton said that they “didn’t all agree”, adding that he became “frustrated” when they stood up to him.

He said: “If I want to make a great album aged 76 or 77 I’ve got to be told and they put up with my little foibles, which were really about anxiety, self-doubt and not feeling very well at the time.

“I was tired so I thought, I’m going to abandon this.

“The problem was three other people were involved and I knew that if I walked away from it I would hate myself for the rest of my life.”

He added that it is not the first time he has had doubts about his music.

“You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t have fear and doubt. It’s good for artists. Every album I’ve done, good, bad or indifferent, I’ve had doubts about,” he said.

“And the most doubts I’ve ever had have been with this one.”

The album has mostly been praised by critics. Writing in the Guardian, Lisa Wright awarded it four stars, praising its “poignant moments”, while The Telegraph’s Neil McCormick gave it five stars, calling it a “glorious return to his bombastic, melodious 1970s pomp”.

In January, Sir Elton’s career-spanning greatest hits collection, Diamonds, reached number one after 374 weeks on the charts.

Featuring signature songs like Tiny Dancer, I’m Still Standing and Rocket Man, the 51-track collection has gave the star his ninth number one album.

Last year, Sir Elton also won his first Emmy Award which finally gave him EGOT status, meaning he joined an exclusive club of performers who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.

Man City miss chance to move into top four with dull derby draw

0

With confirmation he will leave City when his contract expires at the end of the season, De Bruyne was playing at Old Trafford in City’s famous sky blue for the last time.

It was his 22nd derby appearance overall, spanning a period of blue dominance over red in terms of titles and quality.

Operating in the number 10 role from which Jack Grealish had been dropped, De Bruyne started as though he was determined to make a significant impact.

He had an early shot after turning on to an astute Bernardo Silva pass inside the penalty area but it didn’t trouble Onana. De Bruyne then tried a through ball for Phil Foden, which he overhit.

Deeper into the opening period, he surged forward in the matter of old with a real sense of purpose. Even at 33, De Bruyne was able to outpace Diogo Dalot but Foden didn’t give the Belgium captain much of an angle and the pass went astray.

At the start of the second half, Matheus Nunes picked out De Bruyne on the right side of the penalty area. But the cross was too far in front of Marmoush. A few minutes later, from a similar position, De Bruyne took advantage of Nunes’ overlapping burst and stepped inside. For a second, it appeared De Bruyne would find the corner. Instead, his shot went straight to Onana again.

It was similar to quite a few of De Bruyne recent appearances. The sense of a dying of the light – certainly at this high level – was impossible to escape.

Ghana Athletics suspends two individuals

0

Ghana Athletics (GA), the national governing body for track and field, has suspended two individuals—Mr. Wisdom Loh and Mr. Jeffery Nkrumah—from all athletics-related activities.

In a press release, GA stated that the suspensions were imposed due to actions “against the spirit of the World Athletics Code of Conduct (Article 3.3.17 of the WA Integrity Code of Conduct [in force from 1 November 2019]).” The duo is accused of “undermining the authority of GA and bringing into disrepute” the organization.

The investigation will also examine whether their conduct “directly or indirectly facilitated the exploitation of Athletes whether based in Ghana, and/or foreign-based Ghanaian Athletes.” GA has ordered Loh and Nkrumah to “cease and desist from presenting themselves, in any setting, as representatives of Ghana Athletics and/or as licensed representatives of athletes from Ghana.”

The statement further warned athletes, coaches, and officials against engaging with the suspended individuals on GA-related matters, stating that anyone who continues to do so “will be considered as an accomplice and may be sanctioned by GA.” Potential sanctions include prohibition from participating in GA-sanctioned events.

Ignore ‘unGhanaian, evil propaganda,’ Prof Opoku-Agyemang doing well

0

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has dismissed rumors surrounding the health of Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, assuring the public that she is in good health and will soon resume her duties.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang went abroad to seek medical care after initial treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) after experiencing a sudden illness following her official duties on Friday, March 28, 2025, but there were speculations that the Vice President had passed on.

Addressing Ghanaians in Lagos, Nigeria on Sunday, April 6, Ablakwa emphasised that prayers from Ghanaians both at home and abroad have contributed to her recovery.

“Some fears about the state of our mother, the first female vice president of the Republic of Ghana. I also want to assure that she is doing very, very well. Your prayers worked, your prayers from all of us, Ghanaians at home and abroad, have really worked.

“I have heard from her, so I know what I am talking about, and she’s doing well,” he stated.

Ablakwa urged the public to disregard what he described as “vicious and unGhanaian evil propaganda” being circulated about Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s health.

He expressed confidence in her ability to inspire young girls and women across the nation.

“Please ignore all of that very vicious and unGhanaian evil propaganda that some people are speculating. Our mother is doing very, very well, and very soon she is going to return to her duties, serving Ghana, making all of you proud and particularly inspiring our young girls, our daughters, to know that there is nothing our women cannot achieve—that women are as good as men and that what men can do, women can also do and do it better,” Ablakwa added.

NPP to meet over drug trafficking allegations, postpones meeting with Adwoa Safo

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled a meeting for Monday, April 7, at its headquarters to address mounting concerns over alleged drug trafficking incidents in the country.

Contrary to earlier reports suggesting that the meeting would focus on the disciplinary hearing of former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, the party’s General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, has clarified the agenda.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, April 6, Frimpong stated: “[Monday] there will be a meeting at the NPP headquarters, but I am going to disappoint you—it is not going to be a discussion on whether or not Honourable Adwoa Safo is going to appear before a disciplinary committee or not.

“However, what the party is going to discuss is the running issue with respect to the alleged drug trafficking in our country, which the rank and file of our party have expressed its disappointment and the worrying behaviour of this government.”

He went on to criticise the government’s handling of the issue, citing a lack of clarity and transparency.

“The several mind-boggling questions that we are expecting the government to explain to the people of Ghana and also the inconsistencies in its attempt to sweep under the carpet several issues that concern or surround the alleged drug trafficking in our airport,” Frimpong added.

The NPP says it hopes the meeting will help shape a more coordinated party response and increase pressure on the government to provide answers on the matter.

Government to ease passport costs for Ghanaians abroad – Foreign Minister assures

0

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that passport applications declined by 20,000 within a year following a fee increase introduced by the previous administration.

Addressing Ghanaians in Lagos, Nigeria, he described the increment as a harsh measure that negatively impacted citizens both at home and abroad.

During a well-attended community engagement held at Ghana’s Consulate-General, members of the Ghanaian diaspora voiced strong concerns over the high cost of acquiring passports.

In response, the Minister gave assurances that steps were being taken to review and potentially reduce passport fees for Ghanaians living outside the country, just as had been done domestically.

Mr Ablakwa explained that the government is currently undertaking a broad review of the Fees and Charges Act, and pledged that the concerns raised by the diaspora would be fully considered in this process.

He further highlighted the administration’s commitment to easing bureaucratic and financial burdens on Ghanaians everywhere.

He also disclosed plans to collaborate with the National Identification Authority to begin registering Ghanaians abroad, a move expected to enhance data accuracy and streamline access to services for citizens overseas.

In updating the audience on the government’s progress, the Minister reaffirmed key reforms including the abolishment of the electronic transfer levy (e-levy), the betting tax, and the emissions levy.

“We are determined to deliver on our promises and ensure relief reaches all Ghanaians,” he stated.

Ghana Card issuance resumes in Greater Accra on Monday – NIA

0

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that beginning Monday, 7th April 2025, it will commence the issuance of printed backlog and first-time registration of Ghana Cards at all its District Offices in the Greater Accra Region.

This exercise forms part of the Authority’s renewed efforts to ensure that every eligible Ghanaian is registered and possesses the Ghana Card, the country’s primary form of identification.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, the NIA assured applicants who have been awaiting their cards since June 2023 that the process will officially resume from Monday.

“All Ghanaians who applied for the first issuance, replacement, or update of personal records from June 2023 in Greater Accra and have not yet received their cards are assured that, effective Monday, 7th April 2025, the issuance of the Ghana Cards will begin at the respective District Offices where they registered,” the statement read.

The Authority also encouraged all Ghanaians aged 15 years and above who have not yet registered to take advantage of this opportunity and visit any NIA District Office within the Greater Accra Region for first-time registration.

According to the NIA, both the issuance of the printed backlog and new registration services are entirely free of charge.

“The public is urged to report any NIA staff who demands a fee in exchange for these services,” the Authority cautioned.

While new registrations and issuance remain free, the NIA clarified that services such as card replacement and updates to personal records are still subject to applicable fees.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians are adequately identified under the national system.

“The National Identification Authority remains committed to ensuring that all Ghanaians possess the Ghana Card for the purposes of identification,” the statement concluded.

Trump tariffs: Ghana’s strategic opportunity for AfCFTA exports to USA

0

In response to the tariffs imposed by the United States as part of its strategy to reduce its trade deficit with the rest of the world, the Trump administration has implemented a minimum tariff of 10% on exports from several countries to the USA. This is likely to impact heavily on the cost of exports from Ghana and other Sub-Saharan African countries, and this is likely to create challenges for exporters in the region.

Even though this does not appear to be favorable to Ghana in the short term, when compared to other African countries facing even higher tariffs, it presents a very unique opportunity long-term. This relatively lower tariff rate positions Ghana as an attractive destination for international investors seeking to minimize costs while accessing the U.S. market.

Ghana’s free zones also offer powerful incentives for export manufacturing companies, including exemptions from taxation, streamlined customs regimes, and a business-friendly regulatory environment. All these are fertile ground upon which manufacturers can establish themselves in Ghana and utilize its strategic position to export products not only to the U.S. but also to other markets around the globe. Through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), manufacturers can tap into the large African market while simultaneously benefiting from Ghana’s favourable trade terms with Western economies, including the U.S.

Ghana is also strategically positioned for investors due to our huge ports, particularly the ports of Tema and Takoradi, which help to reduce costs through easier trade facilitation and cheaper costs, as they grant easier connectivity and market access to both the African Continental Free Trade Area and many global regions.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Africa exported a total of $40 billion in goods to the USA, of which Ghana benefited from only $1.2 billion. This presents a huge opportunity for trade partnerships, which can translate to trade volumes of about $10 – $20 billion progressively in the next ten years.

This can be done by placing Ghana as a pre-manufacturing destination for companies in the USA and with corresponding repackaging companies for some key opportunity zones like North Carolina, North Pennsylvania, and other economic areas.

In addition, Ghana provides access to a pool of inexpensive, skilled labor, further positioning it as a favorable place to locate as a manufacturing hub. This combination of inexpensive labor, good trade policies, and strategic geographic placement positions Ghana as a prime investment site for export-oriented industries. By taking advantage of these possibilities, foreign producers and investors can counteract the impacts of U.S. tariffs while promoting Ghana’s economic development and growth.

Chinese Ambassador backs sustainable mining, community development in Ghana

0

By James Amoh Junior/ Francis Ntow

Accra, April 6, GNA –  The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Tong Defa, has lauded the establishment of the Association of China (Ghana) Mining LBG (ACGM) as a key step towards deepening sustainable and inclusive development in Ghana’s mining sector.

Describing the Association as a “bridge for a win-win cooperation,” Mr Tong said the initiative aligned with Ghana’s ambition to modernise its mining industry, while protecting its rich natural heritage.

Ambassador Tong stated: “Ghana’s lush forests and clear waters are as valuable as gold and silver,” urging members of the Association to prioritise ecological preservation alongside economic development.

He was speaking at a colourful ceremony, in Accra,  at which the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, inaugurated the ACGM under the theme: “Responsibility, Sustainability, Excellence, and Growth.”

It comprises major Chinese mining firms and mining sector services companies.

The event also marked the announcement of the China-Ghana Mining Community Development Foundation, aimed at mobilising dedicated funds to support sustainability and community empowerment and development initiatives.

Mr Tang ZhenJiang serves as Chairman, with Mr Kevin Chen, Secretary General (Golden Star Wassa, subsidiary of Chifeng Gold); and three Deputy Chairmen: Mr Kevin Wu of JH Resources Exploration Limited, Mr Libin Xu of Ghana Manganese Company Limited, and Mr Qingming Tang of Earl International Mining Ltd.

Ambassador Tong identified five key focus areas for the ACGM as promoting standardised development, information sharing, technical cooperation, community development, and environmental protection. Ambassador Tong pledged the continued support of the Chinese Embassy, expressing optimism that the Association would “inject new momentum into Ghana’s economic growth and the high-quality development of Chinese enterprises.”

Mr Buah, who spoke on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, described the inauguration as “a significant milestone that ushers in a new chapter in Ghana-China collaboration in the mining sector.

“One that promises mutual growth, technological advancement, and sustainable development,” he explained.

He underlined the Government’s zero tolerance for illegal mining drive, describing  Galamsey as “an act of environmental terrorism and economic sabotage”.

Mr Buah tasked the ACGM to serve as “a beacon of integrity,” upholding Ghanaian mining laws, while supporting community upliftment.

“China has long been a partner in Ghana’s mining sector. The establishment of the ACGM reflects the commitment of Chinese investors to responsible and long-term engagement in this very critical industry,” he said.

The Minister highlighted the potential of Chinese technical expertise in areas such as underground mining, low-grade ore development, and mining-related nuclear training, to improve efficiency and global competitiveness in Ghana’s mining industry.

Mr Tang, for his part, reaffirmed the Association’s core mission to promote responsible mining, technological innovation, and community-driven development.

He expressed readiness to work closely with Ghana’s Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources and Youth Development to empower young people through a cooperative system.

“Through this Association, we will unify industry consensus, fulfil social responsibilities, and empower communities,” Mr Tang said.

“Together, we will write a remarkable new chapter in China-Ghana collaboration.”

The event, rich in cultural display, featured traditional performances by the Atitirew Cultural Troupe and brought together dignitaries and key players in Ghana’s mining sector.

They included Ministers of State, Parliamentarians, and renowned entrepreneur Mr Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners, a mining service provider.

0

Global leader in digital business services, TP, has launched its third office in Accra, aimed at creating new job opportunities to enhance the country’s economic development.

This move is in collaboration with the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of TP, Thomas Mackenbrock, reiterated TP’s strong commitment to job creation, adding that the company is planning to hire over 5,000 young Ghanaians across the country.

He believes this will support the government’s efforts to reduce the national unemployment rate.

He explained that TP has experienced significant growth in Ghana since it began operations in January 2022 with just one site and 36 employees.

This expansion aligns with TP’s long-term vision to position Ghana as a strategic hub for digital services in West Africa.

He further stated that TP will continue to work alongside the government to create opportunities within the country, noting the company’s global presence in over 95 countries and its workforce of nearly 500,000 people worldwide.

Government to publish list of locally-made items for mandatory procurement by state agencies

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

The Government of Ghana is set to introduce a policy requiring all state agencies to procure certain essential goods exclusively from local producers.

This initiative, announced by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during a meeting with the leadership of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), aims to strengthen Ghana’s industrial sector, create jobs, and reduce dependency on imports.

Dr. Forson emphasised that no country can develop without a strong industrial base, and while trade is important, Ghana must adopt deliberate policies to promote local production.

He questioned why the country continues to import basic commodities such as sugar and rice, despite having the capacity to produce them locally.

“To support our local industries, the government will soon publish a list of items that all public sector agencies must procure locally. This will ensure that government procurement serves as a tool to develop our industries,” he stated.

“Going forward, any government procurement from outside Ghana will require special approval from the Office of the President.”

The finance minister also highlighted the urgent need to curb the smuggling of goods, which he said is crippling local businesses.

He revealed that the government has identified key smuggling routes and will soon announce strict measures to stop the influx of smuggled goods that unfairly compete with locally manufactured products.

As part of the broader industrial strategy, Dr. Forson called for a working session with industry leaders to explore how local businesses can actively participate in the government’s 24-hour economy programme to drive production and economic expansion.

AGI President, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, welcomed the government’s commitment to supporting local industries.

He praised the minister’s budget policies and expressed optimism that continued engagement between government and industry would lead to tangible improvements in Ghana’s industrial sector.

The upcoming mandatory local procurement policy is expected to provide a significant boost to Ghanaian manufacturers, ensuring that government spending contributes directly to the growth of local businesses and the expansion of the national economy.

In a remarkable blend of grit, purpose, and patriotism, Ghanaian-born Emmanuel Adjei is gearing up for a journey that promises to be both physically demanding and deeply symbolic.

Under the banner of his charity project Bike2MyRoots, Emmanuel will cycle solo from Munich, Germany to Accra, Ghana — a near 10,000-kilometre odyssey through 15 countries and a vivid testament to personal resolve in pursuit of a greater cause.

“Bike2MyRoots is a bold initiative that combines the spirit of adventure with a deep commitment to social change,” organisers say. The ride, slated to begin in May 2025, will unfold over 150 days and test the limits of endurance as Emmanuel navigates rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and countless border crossings — all in the name of education and empowerment for deprived Ghanaian communities.

The journey is more than just a test of stamina. It’s a fundraiser for EduSport, a local NGO working to create access to quality education in underserved areas. The organisation builds libraries and educational infrastructure, helping to bridge the gap for children who often find themselves forgotten by the mainstream education system.

The cause is personal for Emmanuel, who sees his journey not only as a return to his roots but a call to action for others. “The ride also carries symbolic weight, a Ghanaian returning home on two wheels, fueled by the dream of empowering others,” he notes, urging the Ghanaian diaspora and well-wishers around the world to contribute to the mission.

According to Emmanuel, his goal is to stir minds as much as wheels. “With every kilometer pedaled, Emmanuel hopes to inspire others to take action and invest in the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and change-makers.”

In an era where many stories are dominated by despair, Bike2MyRoots offers something refreshingly different: a tale of hope, driven by the dream of a better Ghana — one pedal stroke at a time.

Prophet Kofi Oduro wades into missing ECG containers saga

0

Head Pastor and founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro Head Pastor and founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro

Head Pastor and founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the alleged disappearance of thousands of containers filled with cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the port.

Speaking to his congregation on April 6, 2025, the pastor stated that the circumstances surrounding the missing cables reflect the state of the nation.

He further claimed that God is using what he described as “foolish countries” to punish Ghana due to the country’s prevailing issues.

“God is using foolish countries to punish us. China, India, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon are all part of these countries. That is why we see revenue from our GDP flowing into other nations,” he said.

He expressed disbelief that one individual, in collaboration with others, could allegedly orchestrate the disappearance of 1,300 containers.

“Only in a foolish country with no foresight can this happen. People are languishing in poverty, dying daily from terminal diseases, and yet the government refuses to provide free treatment. Such wickedness!”

Rev. Oduro also questioned why no official at the port where the containers were released had been arrested, noting instead that only some foreign nationals had been detained.

“A container arrives at the port and sits there for five years. Which irresponsible officials allowed the containers to be taken out? You go and arrest some Chinese nationals, is Ghana that daft? Why haven’t you arrested those who opened the port gates and authorized the release?,” he questioned.

He concluded by reiterating that God is allowing what he termed “stupid countries” to discipline Ghana for its failures.

“You are blind… and so God is using stupid countries to punish you,” he added.

About the ECG cables:

A recent investigative report on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has revealed that over 1,300 containers intended for clearance at the Tema Port remain unaccounted for.

According to Prof Innocent Senyo Acquah, chairman of the investigative committee, ECG initially reported having 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential equipment.

However, an independent audit at the port identified only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,347 unaccounted for.

Kamaldeen Sulemana’s Southampton relegated from English Premier League

Kamaldeen Sulemana is heading back to second-tier football after Southampton got evicted from the English Premier League on Sunday, 6 April 2025 with seven matches to spare.

The Ghana international played the entire duration of their 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur which sealed their fate.

The Saints have struggled all season and have been rooted to the bottom of the league table since early November, having won just one of their 20 fixtures.

Sulemana has been one of the impressive players for Southampton this term with one goal in 19 league appearances.

The former Right to Dream Academy player moved to St Mary’s Stadium in January 2023 from French side Rennes, where he made 34 league appearances, scored five goals and provided two assists.

Greenpeace backs green methanol for shipping ahead of IMO meeting

0

“Green methanol can point the way for shipping to a climate-friendly future,” Greenpeace spokeswoman Clara Thompson told dpa ahead of a meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London on Monday.

The IMO, a UN agency made up of 176 countries, aims to discuss measures for implementing its greenhouse gas strategy with a view to making shipping carbon-neutral by 2050.

The study by the DLR’s maritime energy unit found methanol easily manageable, by contrast with hydrogen or ammonia, and technically ready for use. It can be produced using renewable forms of energy, and marine engines can easily be converted to burning it.

Shipping is thought to generate around 3% of all greenhouse gases, as well as large amounts of the oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. These pollutants would be almost entirely absent with the use of methanol.

The study notes however that producing methanol is still expensive “in particular the operation and acquisition of electrolysers.” The fuel also needs tanks that are twice as large as current fossil fuel tanks.

Little green methanol is currently available on the market. For comparison, German shipping would need up to 5.73 million metric tons per year, against 2.94 million tons of diesel.

Thompson said the IMO needed to implement binding targets to speed up conversion to alternative fuels. Greenpeace backed a CO2 price that reflected the benefits for the climate of methanol over fossil fuels, she said.

GPL 2024/25: Samartex sink Accra Lions into relegation zone

0

Defending champions, Samartex inflicted a painful 2-1 defeat on Accra Lions at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Sunday, April 6, 2025, deepening their survival woes.

Emmanuel Mamah opened the scoring for the home side just one minute into the game, capitalizing on a lapse in concentration from the visitors.

The hosts dominated proceedings, especially in the first half, creating several shooting and goal-scoring opportunities.

Accra Lions’ Yao Sokpoli attempted to level the score in the 19th minute with a daring strike from outside the box, following a layoff by left-back Ibrahim Issa, but his effort missed the target.
Despite continued pressure from the Lions, Samartex stood firm in defense.

The Lions’ entire backline was caught ball-watching in the 38th minute, allowing Akwesi Sarpong to rifle a shot into the roof of the net to double Samartex’s lead before halftime.

After the break, Accra Lions introduced fresh legs off the bench, but the changes had little impact.

Although the visitors eventually pulled one back, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

Samartex held on to secure all three points, moving up to 9th on the league table with 35 points.

Meanwhile, Accra Lions have dropped into the relegation zone with 23 points. They face Basake Holy Stars in their next fixture, while Samartex will take on Legon Cities.

Article: Corporate restructuring and the role of the board in Ghana

0

As established in the Ghanaian landmark case Salomon v. Salomon , when a company is incorporated, it becomes a separate legal entity with perpetual succession.

This means the company continues to exist even if its members or officers leave, due to death or other reasons.

However, companies can face challenges and may need assistance to recover and grow, which is where corporate restructuring comes in.

This article will discuss corporate restructuring in Ghana, some different methods of corporate restructuring under Ghanaian law, and the role played by the Board of Directors in the process.

1. What is corporate restructuring

Corporate Restructuring is making major adjustments to a company’s financial and operational structure, often in response to financial difficulties.

This may include making positive adjustments to the company’s debt, operations, or organizational setup, aimed at minimizing financial risk and improving business performance .

When a company encounters financial troubles or becomes insolvent, it may look to restructure as a way to recover, regain solvency, and prevent liquidation.

The main objectives are to lower debt, boost cash flow, and ensure the company can continue functioning in a financially stable manner. Below are some of the ways a company can restructure in order to be solvent.

2. Restructuring Methods

Administration:

A restructuring officer or a licensed insolvency practitioner is appointed as an administrator to operate under an approved restructuring agreement to take over the business and assets of a company that is insolvent or has a negative net worth, to manage and restructure the business for the company to become solvent and have a positive net worth.

The Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Act, 2020 (Act 1015), (“CIRA”), is a crucial law in Ghana that addresses insolvency and restructuring. It provides distressed companies with the option to rescue their businesses instead of resorting to liquidation or receivership.

Under CIRA, companies can remain operational as a going concern while undergoing restructuring, with oversight from a designated administrator or restructuring officer.

This approach temporarily halts creditors’ actions, allowing for the development of a restructuring plan that may offer better outcomes for all parties compared to immediate liquidation.

It is important to point out that this rescue provision does not apply to banks, insurance companies, or any other business with special legislation.

The process of administration commences when a licensed Insolvency Practitioner is appointed . The administrator’s duty is to take control of the company’s business, assets, and affairs, investigate its operations, and seek ways to rescue the business in the best interests of creditors, employees, and shareholders.

The administrator is responsible for managing the business, and preserving its value, and may choose to sell or terminate parts of the business and dispose of company property.

The administrator also has the authority to exercise any powers or perform any duties that the company or its officers could perform if it were not in administration.

Mergers:

A merger occurs when one company is absorbed by another company or when two or more companies join to form a new company.

In this process, all assets, liabilities, and operations of the merging companies are transferred to the receiving company or the newly formed entity.

In return, shareholders of the merging companies typically receive shares in the receiving company, sometimes along with additional cash payments.

In Ghana, specific steps must be followed for a merger to take effect:

● Board Approval: The directors of the merging companies must confirm that the merger serves the company’s best interest and that the transferee company will remain solvent after the merger. They must sign a certificate to this effect.

● Merger Proposal: A detailed merger proposal, along with relevant documents, must be shared with shareholders and creditors at least 28 days before the merger takes effect.

The proposal must be approved by at least 75% of each group (members, creditors, and other relevant stakeholders).

● Registration: The approved merger proposal and supporting documents must be submitted to the Registrar at the Office of the Registrar of Companies for official registration.

The essence of a merger is to create a stronger, more competitive business entity by combining resources and expertise, allowing companies to overcome limitations and achieve long-term success.

Arrangements:

An Arrangement is the reorganizing of a company’s structure or shares, such as consolidating or dividing shares  by an appointed restructuring officer (in this case, an insolvency practitioner) such as an Administrator or a Liquidator (in the case of a company being wound up) to improve its financial position. It is usually done when a company faces financial difficulties, such as needing to restructure.

The purpose of an arrangement is to find a solution that benefits both the company and its creditors or members, helping the company avoid insolvency or liquidation and continue its operations.

The company first proposes an arrangement to its creditors or members. The company or other interested parties then apply to the Court which may order a meeting of the relevant groups of members and creditors to be held in the manner the Court directs.

For the arrangement to proceed, at least 75% of creditors or members must approve it. If approved, the Registrar may appoint an insolvency practitioner to assess its fairness.

After the investigation, the Court reviews the arrangement and the report before confirming it, making the arrangement legally binding on all parties.

Once confirmed, the company must implement the changes, and if the arrangement involves asset transfers, the Court may give its approval. If the company fails to follow the required steps, it will face penalties.

3. The role of the board in corporate restructuring

The Board of Directors plays a crucial role in corporate restructuring and below are their roles and responsibilities in the various corporate restructuring techniques:

In an Administration proceeding, Directors hold the following roles and responsibilities:

● They appoint an administrator if they believe the company is insolvent or likely to become insolvent. This decision is made by passing a board resolution, which must contain the grounds for insolvency or the likelihood of insolvency.

● They are required to assist the administrator, provide necessary information, and comply with their decision to help salvage the business for the benefit of creditors, employees, and shareholders.

● While they remain in office during administration, their powers to manage the affairs of the company are limited and they can only act with the administrator’s approval.

During a merger transaction, directors and required to do the following:

● They must ensure that the merger is in the best interest of the company and that the new company will be solvent post-merger, and they are required to provide a certificate to this effect.

● They are also responsible for sending merger proposals and relevant documents to members and creditors before the merger takes effect.

● They must ensure that all legal requirements have been complied with, including submitting necessary documents to the Registrar of Companies for approval and registration of the merger.

When a company undertakes an Arrangement, the Directors are responsible for the following:

● Applying to the Court for an order for a meeting between the shareholders and creditors to discuss and approve the proposed arrangement. The Court however provides the rules to be followed by all parties for this meeting..

● They must ensure the company follows the Court’s orders, such as providing required information by all parties and executing the necessary actions to implement the arrangement. Should they fail to do this, they will be required to pay a penalty, along with all officers of the company

4. Conclusion:

In conclusion, corporate restructuring is more than just a lifeline for companies in financial distress; it is a powerful opportunity to reinvent and stabilize a business.

Whether through administration, mergers, or arrangements, restructuring offers a path to reduce debt, revamp operations, and return to profitability.

The Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in this transformative process, making key decisions, ensuring legal compliance, and collaborating with administrators to steer the company toward recovery.

With strategic leadership and careful planning, restructuring can not only save a company but also position it for future growth and success in an ever-evolving business landscape.

#FixTheCountry plans May 1 protest over galamsey concerns – Barker-Vormawor

0

Private legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor Private legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor

Private legal practitioner and social activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has announced that the #FixTheCountry movement will stage a protest against the government’s poor handling of illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, in the country.

He stated that the demonstration, scheduled for May 1, 2025, will see concerned Ghanaians taking to the streets to express their displeasure with how the government is addressing the galamsey issue.

According to the activist, since President John Dramani Mahama assumed office, he has not presented a clear roadmap to combat the menace, unlike the detailed plans laid out for other sectors during the 2024 election campaign.

“It’s been four months. The level of seriousness the government has shown in other areas makes us believe that a clear strategy to tackle galamsey should have already been unveiled.

“For us, the reason we’re mobilising back to the streets is to remind the government that this is a serious and urgent issue,” he told Joy FM on April 6, 2025.

Barker-Vormawor called on Ghanaians to turn out in large numbers to make their grievances known regarding illegal mining.

“This goes beyond our daily bread or the comfort of fraternising with ministers we admire. Let’s show up and hold the government accountable for addressing the problems we face,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr Murtala Mohammed, has stated that the government is in the process of amending the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003 to ban illegal mining in forest areas.

Hearts of Oak will host Medeama in a highly anticipated Matchday 26 fixture of the Ghana Premier League at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This will be the Phobians’ first time returning to the Accra Sports Stadium this season after receiving late approval.

Hearts of Oak will hope their return to the venue will inspire them to end their poor run of form, having failed to win any of their last four games, losing three and drawing one.

They will face a Medeama side that enters the fixture on the back of two consecutive wins and will be eager to extend their streak.

The Tarkwa-based side, who are the favourites, will be seeking revenge after losing the reverse fixture 2-0.

While a win for Hearts of Oak would propel them back into the top four and revive their title challenge, a victory for Medeama could see them climb into third place.

30-minute rainstorm renders many homeless at Garkuon

0

A brief but intense rainstorm lasting just 30 minutes has left many residents of Garkuon, a farming community in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region, homeless.

The storm, which struck around 10pm on Saturday, ripped off roofs and caused widespread destruction to properties.

According to residents, several structures were destroyed, including homes belonging to vulnerable individuals such as widows.

A resident, Lewaah Dari, who recounted the incident, said they were asleep when the storm began. She narrated how the screams of a neighbour calling for help led them to the collapsed room of an elderly woman. Fortunately, the woman was rescued in time.

“On our way back, we saw roofing sheets being carried away by the wind,” she added, appealing to government and NGOs to come to their aid, especially as more than 10 widows have been left without shelter.

Meanwhile, a Roman Catholic catechist, Samuel Diporo, who had visited the community for worship, expressed shock at the level of destruction. He noted that when he arrived, only furniture remained in place, with church members absent due to the havoc.

He was seen consoling victims and helping them move their belongings to safer places.

Residents are urging for immediate relief support to rebuild their lives.
