Tsatsu Tsikata explains why he risked it and turned down AG’s discontinuation of Gyakye Quayson’s case

0

Attorney General Dr Ayine, barely two months ago, offered immunity to some Ghanaians standing trial in various courts, including the Supreme Court. That immunity was extended to the Member of Parliament for Assin North, who had been on trial for three years.

Celebrated Ghanaian legal practitioner Tsatsu Tsikata, who was the senior lawyer for the recently exonerated Member of Parliament for Assin North Gyakye Quayson, says he declined the magnanimous offer by the Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine to discontinue the case of his client because he resolved to get an acquittal for the MP to prevent future uncertainties.

Kumasi Mayor to commence decongestion of the city on April 16

0

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Boadi, has signaled all persons occupying pavements and unauthorised spaces in the Central Business District of the city to vacate ahead of a major decongestion exercise on April 16.

The newly-confirmed city mayor says his administration intends to use sustainable means to ensure a lasting solution to the problem.

“If you are selling on the pavement, adjust yourself, if you are in the middle of any dual carriage road, especially in the Central Business District, then you have to take steps to get out of the place because from Wednesday we will be coming”, Mr Boadi said.

He emphasised, “I have a different strategy of decongestion. I don’t believe in bringing military men there. Everybody wants to sell in Adum, it is the reason they are there. We will find some ingenious ways to keep them in Adum and decongest it.”

The completion of major stalled market projects remains a priority to the Kumasi Mayor. He says strategic measures will be adopted to complete them by the end of his tenure.

Mr Boadi added, “Krofrom, I am sure within the next two years, it must be completed. For Kejetia Market, the contractors are on site. I will get a briefing from the Regional Minister on the status of it, and I am sure that by the end of President Mahama’s tenure, it will be completed.”

Fifty-five of 56 assembly members endorsed the President’s nominee for the position of Kumasi metro chief executive.

The election scheduled for Friday was pushed a day earlier at the request of the Assembly members in the metropolis. The venue was also changed to prevent party members from gathering at the location.

Kenya police fire tear gas during school drama competition

The play, pictured during a previous performance, mirrors some of Kenya's pressing problems The play, pictured during a previous performance, mirrors some of Kenya’s pressing problems

Kenya’s national high-school drama competition has been overshadowed by drama of its own after police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd that had gathered to watch a controversial play.

Echoes of War is set in a fictional kingdom where the youth have lost faith in their leaders.

It features battles with the police and has drawn parallels with last year’s protests by young people against tax rises.

It was initially disqualified from the drama festival under unclear circumstances, but a High Court ruling overturned the decision and ordered it to be included.

Tensions flared in the western town of Nakuru on Thursday morning when the student performers stormed out of the venue, demanding the release of the play’s author, Cleophas Malala, who had been detained by police.

The scriptwriter and former senator who had penned the production for students from Butere Girls High School, was blocked by police from meeting the young performers for final rehearsals on Wednesday evening.

Malala was later released without charge and praised the students for boycotting the play.

“The young girls of Butere Girls’ have exercised an act of heroic restoration. I’m determined to ensure that Echoes of War is displayed before a Kenyan audience,” Malala said immediately after his release.

The students briefly sang the national anthem before dramatically leaving the hall, which was sealed off by anti-riot police, armed with batons and tear gas canisters.

“There’s no audience. Who are we performing for?” one of the girls told journalists.

They also complained about police harassment.

Following news of Malala’s arrest, large crowds had gathered outside the venue curious to watch the play.

But anti-riot police had been deployed overnight in case of trouble and they fired tear gas to disperse the would-be audience.

Education Minister Julius Ogamba questioned the involvement of Malala in the competition, saying the politician was neither a teacher nor a play director.

“I wonder why a politician should be a script writer for a student performance. Even the competition loses value if we do not allow the teachers to be scriptwriters,” Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said, warning politicians against using innocent students to settle their political scores.

“Let us have a thick line between politics and education,” he added.

The row has sparked public uproar, with rights group Amnesty International saying it was “pointing to a worrying pattern of state-sponsored repression of free expression, press freedom, and the right to associate”.

Chief Justice Martha Koome said that Malala’s detention contravened the court order that the play, and its author, be allowed to take part in the competition.

“Defiance of court orders not only undermines the authority of the courts but also poses a serious threat to the rule of law, which is the bedrock of our society,” she added.

Prominent opposition figure Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the police for firing tear gas near students, praising the “brave” girls for declining to perform.

In a statement, the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) demanded that the students be allowed to stage their play like all the other competitors.

The fictitious kingdom in Echoes of War play is ruled by a tyrannical sultan who is irked by the activism of the youth, portraying similarities to what is currently happening in Kenya, where young people have been demanding better governance.

It is not clear whether the play will now be disqualified and so not get through to the finals, which are held at State House with the president in attendance.

The annual high school drama competitions are hugely popular in Kenya, with students often using theatre as a tool to challenge those in power.

This is not the first time one of the plays has angered the authorities.

In 2013, Malala made headlines with his controversial play Shackles of Doom, which thrust him into the national limelight – and eventually into politics.

The play, also performed by Butere Girls’ High School, was banned by the government before the High Court ruled against the ban and allowed the play to be staged.

At the time, Malala said Shackles of Doom depicted Kenya’s highly ethnised politics which he said contributed to the unequal distribution of resources in the country.

The senator, who has written dozens of other plays, was last August kicked out of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) following internal party wrangles.

He has since fallen out with President William Ruto, whom he campaigned for during the 2022 general elections.

Irate NDC supporters storm Mampong office, burn items

0

Some aggrieved supporters of the National Democratic Congress in the Asante Mampong Constituency of the Ashanti Region stormed the party’s office on Thursday, April 10, vandalizing property and setting some items ablaze outside the premises.

The youth claimed they had received information that one Esther Dwomoh had been nominated for the Municipal Chief Executive position, although there has been no official communication from the Presidency.

According to them, three individuals, the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate Yakubu Yakubu, the current Constituency Chairman Mohammed Kamil, and Imoro Iddrisu, were shortlisted after the vetting, and they insist one of them must be nominated.

Police officers were deployed to the scene, but no arrests have been made.

Fire officers were also dispatched to douse the flames set to one of the properties.

The Asante Mampong Constituency Communications Officer for the NDC, Kwaku Bernasko, confirmed the incident.

“It’s a group of the youth who are agitating about a rumour that is moving around that the Mampong MCE nominee had been given to a lady called Esther Dwomoh. They came to the party office to express their displeasure to the party executives who were around.

“We couldn’t control the crowd; party properties like chairs and tables were broken and set ablaze at the forecourt of the party office,” he narrated.

‘They are everywhere in your faces’ – Davido on why Nigerian artistes outshine Ghanaian acts

0

Afrobeats musician, Davido Afrobeats musician, Davido

Afrobeats musician, Davido, has attributed the global dominance of Nigerian musicians over their equally talented Ghanaian counterparts to the relentless drive of Nigerians.

Speaking in an interview on ‘The Breakfast Club’ on April 8, 2025, Davido responded to the host’s question about why Ghana lacks artistes with the same international reach as Nigeria or South Africa.

While acknowledging Ghana’s wealth of talent, Charlamagne noted that its musicians have not achieved the same level of global prominence.

Davido, in response, explained that Nigerians’ bold and assertive approach sets them apart.

“It’s just the kind of people we are. Nigerians are very ‘in your face.’ If you go to any neighbourhood, you’ll find a Nigerian there. That’s how we are, we’re everywhere, pushing our craft,” he said.

The ‘Unavailable’ hitmaker stated that this aggressive self-promotion and relentlessness give Nigerian artistes an edge in breaking into international markets as compared to Ghanaians.

His comments follow years of comparisons on social media between Ghanaian acts and their Nigerian counterparts.

While many have blamed Ghanaian artistes for not pushing hard enough, others have pointed to factors such as Nigeria’s larger population, greater investment in its entertainment industry, and the presence of more Nigerian personalities in influential positions.

However, many Ghanaian acts, including Stonebwoy, Black Sherif, and King Promise, have also been making incredible exploits around the globe.

Sekondi MP sues NPP member, Jospong, Metro TV over $350M cocaine claim

0

Blay Nyameke Armah, a Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has filed a defamation lawsuit in the High Court of Justice, Accra, against three defendants: Lawuratu Musah-Saka, the Jospong Group of Companies, and Ignite Media Group.

The case stems from alleged defamatory statements made on the widely aired television programme Good Morning Ghana and subsequently disseminated across various social media platforms.

According to the plaintiff’s claim in the writ dated April 9, the first defendant falsely accused him of being involved in transnational drug trafficking, including the possession of 3,000 kilograms of cocaine valued at $350 million.

The statements further suggested that Armah had fled to a neighbouring country to evade arrest and that his son had been apprehended in connection with the alleged criminal activities.

These accusations, as described in the writ, have caused significant harm to the plaintiff’s reputation as a lawyer, businessman, and parliamentary candidate, subjecting him to public ridicule and emotional distress.

The plaintiff contends that the allegations were made maliciously, without evidence, and aimed at portraying him as a criminal kingpin leading an organized criminal enterprise.

In his lawsuit, Armah seeks multiple legal remedies, including:
– A declaration that the statements made by the first defendant were false, malicious, and defamatory.
– A retraction and public apology issued by the defendants with the same prominence as the defamatory content.
– An order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from publishing further defamatory statements.
– General, aggravated, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GH₵10,000,000.00.
– Legal costs and any other reliefs deemed appropriate by the court.

He indicated that his outfit had already directed officials of the National Disaster Management (NADMO) to assess the extent of damage that would enable them to release the needed relief items to the area.

Mr Gunu gave the assurance on Wednesday, April 9 at the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly Hall during the confirmation of Mr Daniel Dagba, the President’s nominee for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

“I have already communicated with the appropriate authorities, including NADMO and the Member of Parliament for the area for a collaborative intervention.”

Ghana’s economic challenges stem from flawed macroeconomic framework – TUC says in comments on 2025 budget

0

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has published detailed comments on the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy presented to Parliament by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson on March 11, 2025.

The 2025 budget has the theme “Resetting the Economy for the Ghana we want,”

In the 12-page document submitted to the government on the budget, the TUC commented on the Macroeconomic Policy Framework, Employment, Wages, Salaries, and Industrial Peace, Social Protection and Pensions, Public Debts and National Revenues, Agriculture and Food Security, Privatisation of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Labour Administration, Taxation and Free Senior High School policy.

The TUC noted in the documented dated April, 2025 that “The assessment is done in the context of our budget proposals submitted to Government before the budget presentation. More importantly, our assessment is against the backdrop of the nature of Ghana’s economic challenges. That is, an economic management framework that has for over four (4) decades failed to transform the structure of the Ghanaian economy.”

It added that this framework “has produced high rate of joblessness, rampant inflation, high interest rates, unsustainable national debts, declining incomes, and suffocating cost-of-living.”

“In our submission to Government on the 2025 budget, we indicated that Ghana’s recuring economic challenges stems from a flawed
macroeconomic framework that has been implemented since the mid-1980s. In that framework, employment is treated as a residual outcome of
economic growth and macroeconomic stability. This assumption has proven to be false given that in the last 40 years of positive economic growth, joblessness has increased and employment has shifted to the informal sector. Good jobs have become harder to obtain,” the TUC stated.

“While overprioritizing macro stability, the framework has resulted in recurring bouts of macroeconomic instability. This is reflected in the
persistence of the inflation problem in Ghana, high interest rates, subdued economic growth, and depreciating national currency,” it emphasised.

To turn things around, the TUC urged government to work with all stakeholders to change the current macroeconomic framework.

“Ghana needs a new model of economic management that seeks to qualitatively change the structure of the economy. Employment creation must be at the centre of economic policy. Ghana needs to derive maximum benefits from its natural resources. This will enable Government to fund national development from domestic revenues, obviate the need for borrowing and reduce our debt burden,” the Union advised.

Tanzania’s opposition leader charged with treason

0

Tundu Lissu appeared a magistrate's court in Dar es Salaam, to hear the charges Tundu Lissu appeared a magistrate’s court in Dar es Salaam, to hear the charges

Tanzania’s opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been charged with treason a day after he was arrested following a rally he held in the south of the country.

The charge is connected to his nationwide campaign pushing for electoral reform under the slogan “No Reforms, No Election”.

The country is due to go to the polls in October when Lissu is expected to challenge President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

When Samia first came to power in 2021, after the death of her predecessor John Magufuli, she was praised for reversing some of his more authoritarian tendencies. But she has since been criticised after some opposition members have been targeted with arrests and abductions.

In a series of public appearances, Lissu has been saying that there is no chance of a free-and-fair election in six months unless there are reforms.

The leader of the Chadema party wants the make-up of the electoral commission to change. He has argued that it should not include people appointed directly by Samia.

The authorities have described the campaign as inciting the public against the holding of the general election.

Lissu has been arrested several times in the past.

In 2017, during Magufuli’s presidency, he survived an assassination attempt during which he was shot 16 times.

He then went into exile and returned briefly in 2020 to run against Magufuli in that year’s election. He left after the results were announced, complaining about irregularities.

He then returned in 2023 after changes that Samia introduced to allow more freedom for the opposition.

Earlier on Thursday, the police used tear gas to disperse Chadema supporters while blocking the party leaders from holding a press conference regarding Lissu’s arrest.

Some party supporters told the BBC that nothing would stop them from demanding electoral reforms ahead of the elections.

“We are surprised that the police are harassing us when our rallies are peaceful,” one supporter said.

“We know the ruling party, CCM, is behind all this. We will fight for changes before elections.”

Rights groups have condemned the use of force and accused the government of using state institutions to silence critics.

A lawyers’ association said the arrest of Lissu and the crackdown on his supporters was an abuse of power and showed a lack of political tolerance.

Lissu’s treason case has been adjourned until 24 April.

TDC alleges irregular sale of community 24 lands to Ofori-Atta family associates

0

The Tema Development Company Limited (TDC) has disclosed that its preliminary investigations have uncovered the sale of several parcels of land in Tema Community 24 to individuals associated with the Ofori-Atta family.

This revelation comes on the back of an internal review across TDC’s departments, which exposed significant irregularities and triggered calls for an external investigation.

Speaking at a press conference at the TDC office in Tema on Thursday, April 10, Managing Director Courage Makafui Nunekpeku stated that available records point to land sales made during the tenure of his predecessor, Alice Abena Ofori-Atta, to persons connected to the Ofori-Atta family.

Nunekpeku emphasized that the call for investigations is grounded in solid evidence and not mere speculation.

“Nothing will stop the investigations we’re going to do. The only thing that can stop it will be probably the sector minister or the President. Apart from that, nothing is going to stop it. We will continue to do the land audit to make sure that people account for their stewardship.”

He further questioned the concentration of land ownership within a single family.

“You cannot be the Managing Director that presides over the sale of land, properties to this level and think that you should not be called to account. Every ten plots in layer T of the categorised land, two or three plots belongs to an Ofori-Atta. I mean, why, is that the only family we have in Ghana? These are facts, nobody can change it.”

The Head of Public Relations for Burniton Music Group (BMG), Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng is calling on organisers of Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) to nominate reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year, Stonebwoy for best male vocalist award.

This year’s Best Male Vocalist category has Kofi Nuel, Emmanueel Juddah, MOG Music, Ayisi and Joe Mettle as nominees.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Ms Boateng said she was very surprised at how the board of TGMA continuously ignored Stonebwoy for the best male vocal performance award when the latter has shown his vocal prowess over the years.

“I would have loved for Stonebwoy to also make it to the male vocal performance category as well. For many years, the scheme has overlooked Stonebwoy’s vocal power, his vocal dexterity is unmatched and that show itself on every song on his album and features he makes for other artistes.

“He has one of the unique vocal tones and melodies that sets him apart from other artistes and it’s about time that that unique sound of his voice is appreciated. Songs like lovely weather, your body etc. have distinct vocal ranges that could settle nicely in that male vocal performance category.

Virtually ticking all the category’s boxes as well as habouring a strong conviction of making history as the first artiste to win the ultimate Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) Artiste of the Year (AOTY) award back to back, Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has declared he has no challenger in this year’s race. (Related article: I have no challenger –Stonebwoy on Artiste of the Year race)

Stonebwoy, the reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year believes it is a done deal for him although he is vying for the TGMA topmost prize again this year against strong contenders including King Promise, Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke, Joe Mettle, King Paluta and Team Eternity Ghana.

Expert warns against high domestic financing of Ghana’s budget deficit amid T-Bill rejections

0

Concerns are mounting among financial experts regarding Ghana’s plans to finance a significant 63 percent of its 2025 budget deficit domestically.

This strategy, coupled with recent trends of rejected and undersubscribed Treasury Bills, has raised red flags about government’s ability to close the fiscal gap and its potential repercussions for the nation’s economy.

Finance and tax expert, Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi has issued a stark warning, highlighting that the continuous rejection of bids and the failure to fully subscribe to Treasury Bill auctions pose a serious threat to the government’s deficit financing objectives. His caution comes on the heels of the recent auctions.

(Table showing T-bills auction trends from March 7-April 4, 2025)

According to Kuagbedzi, this trend has “significant implications for Ghana’s economy.” If government struggles to secure the necessary domestic financing, the nation could face a cascade of negative consequences. These include “increased borrowing costs, economic instability, inflation, currency depreciation, and even a sovereign debt crisis”, he noted.

Ghana’s challenges with deficit financing are not a new phenomenon. Historical data reveals a persistent struggle with revenue mobilization. Research indicates that the country’s budget deficits are often fueled by low tax collection. Currently, Ghana’s tax revenue as a percentage of GDP hovering around 13.9 percent. This issue exacerbates the current concerns surrounding the reliance on domestic borrowing.

Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi acknowledges that deficit financing can be a double-edged sword. While it can inject much-needed funds into the economy and potentially stimulate growth, it also carries inherent risks if not managed prudently. “Uncontrolled deficit financing can lead to inflationary pressures, widen income inequality, and create overall economic instability.”

The current situation, marked by a high reliance on domestic financing and government’s apparent reluctance to accept high borrowing costs in the Treasury bill market, presents a complex challenge. It remains to be seen how government will navigate these headwinds to ensure a stable economic future for Ghana. Government needs diversified strategies to address these concerns and secure the necessary funds to meet its budgetary obligations without triggering adverse economic consequences. The interplay between government’s fiscal plans, investor appetite, and borrowing costs will be crucial in determining Ghana’s economic trajectory in the coming year.

Renowned Ghanaian playwright and director, Uncle Ebo Whyte, has once again used the stage as a powerful tool for social change, this time spotlighting the harsh realities of drug addiction, the illusion of opulence, and the consequences of life choices.

Staged at the National Theatre under the auspices of Roverman Productions, the play titled ‘The Ex Factor’ tells the gripping story of a wealthy father who gives his two sons seed money to start their own paths in life. What unfolds is a tale of contrast—one son uses the funds wisely, while the other descends into a world of drug abuse and reckless living.

The play not only explores the individual choices of the characters but also reflects broader societal struggles with addiction and the burdens placed on families.

After the curtains fell and the audience rose in ovation, Uncle Ebo Whyte took a moment to share a deeply personal story that added further weight to the night’s message.

“12 years ago, my wife lost her brother. His name was Seth—the only boy among girls. He was a wonderful man, but he lost his life to drugs,” he revealed.

Speaking with raw honesty, Ebo Whyte addressed the emotional toll addiction takes on families. “From his experience, I know that the families of people dealing with alcoholism and drug addiction suffer more than the people themselves,” he said. “So my prayer to every family that is here dealing with such a thing is that, ‘let us continue praying.’ Once the drugs and substances take control of them, it’s not about rebuking them because they’re lost. Prayer will help them.”

He urged the audience to show compassion, understanding, and faith when dealing with loved ones facing addiction. “Let’s learn to pray for them more. And I pray that your lost ones will find themselves again,” he added. “But if you’re here and you’re in the case of one addiction or the other, I pray that you find your life back. We were born to be free, we were born to live our best lives, and I hope that you’ll find yours as well.”

Ebo Whyte, whose productions are celebrated for weaving humor, emotion, and social commentary, has consistently addressed sensitive issues—from mental health to domestic abuse—and this latest work cements his place as not just a playwright, but a voice for healing and hope.

The play continues to run at the National Theatre on 11th, 12th & 13th April as part of Roverman Productions’ quarterly lineup.

Stakeholders to foster collaboration to address NCD finances

0

By Albert Allotey

Accra, April 10, GNA – Dr Ignatius A. N. Awinibuno, Chief Programme Officer (Director) Allied Health, Ministry of Health has called on stakeholders in health to collaborate to seek financial solutions to address challenges of non communicable diseases (NCDs).

He said, “Collaboration is the way to go. Multi-sectoral collaboration is very important. The silos approach does not bring synergy, and we end up duplicating and competing unhealthyly instead of using our potentials to maximise the limited resources we have.”

Dr Awinibuno made the call in an address at a stakeholders’ meeting on NCDs ahead of the 4th UN High Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health organised by the Ghana NCD Alliance in Accra.

It was on the theme, “Ghana’s progress on NCDs and mental health from 2018 to 2025: Lessons learnt and key future priorities.”

The meeting was attended by representatives from the National Health Insurance Authority, Mental Health Authority, PharmaAccess, Ghana Health Service-NCD Programme, civil society organisations, traditional leaders, and persons with live experience of NCDs

Dr Awinibuno said addressing the social determinants of health, essential matters of environment, creating finance, and local governance required an integrated holistic approach.

“I therefore urge all sectors to collaborate actively to ensure that our strategies do not remain siloed but rather contribute to robust national response.

“Financing NCDs prevention and care remains a critical issue and that it is imperative that we represent a unified strategic position that reflects our progress and aspirations at the UN High Level Meeting in September, 2025,” the Director said.

Dr Awinibuno said since 2018 the Ministry of Health had embarked on significant initiatives aimed at curbing the surge in NCDs, and that followed their commitment to achieving universal health coverage.

He said while the government had made some commendable progress in health and the launch of the MahamaCare, there was the need for stakeholders to come together to also confront the barriers that persist, thus the limited financial commitment.

Dr Awinibuno asked the stakeholders to resolve to advocate concrete financing commitment including the reactivation of the NCD Fund set out in Ghana’s National Policy Strategy.

“That will require that all sectors contribute to it. Government alone cannot do it. We know there are philanthropists who can do it, but there is the need for a clear mechanism that targets where the support should go,” he stated.

He said, “While challenges we face in the fight against NCDs are daunting, I have the unwavering faith in our collective capabilities to enact a meaningful change.”

Dr Awinibuno commended the Ghana NCD Alliance and its global partners for convening the national conversation on NCDs and mental health to seek views from all stakeholders to inform Ghana’s contribution at the 4th UN High Level Meeting in September, 2025.

Dr Beatrice Wiafe-Addae, the Chairperson of the Ghana NCD Alliance in a speech read on her behalf urged stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to building a healthier Ghana where NCDs and mental health receive attention, resources, and support they deserve.

She said, “We cannot do all these things without neglecting environmental factors because a study by the World Health organisation shows that reducing environmental factors will help prevent NCDs.”

Dr Wiafe-Addae called on health advocates to engage in meaningful dialogue, foster partnerships, and identify actionable priorities that would not only align with global initiatives, but also address the unique means of Ghana.

“Data shows that nearly 19 percent of Ghanaians have mental illness while 41 per cent have some form of psychological distress. This is scary in our population of 32 million. A fear is escalated by apathy and inertia.

“Together, we have the power to shape the trajectory of our nation’s health landscape,” she said, adding that, “ As we prepare for the 4th UN High Level Meeting, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a healthier nation.”.

The Managing Director of TDC, Courage Makafui Nunekpeku, has revealed that an internal review of the company’s operations has uncovered the sale of large tracts of land to individuals with connections to the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, during the tenure of his predecessor, Alice Abena Ofori-Atta.

This disclosure raises concerns over the transparency and fairness of land distribution during the period he was finance minister.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Nunekpeku explained that the sale of these lands occurred under questionable circumstances, sparking the need for further investigation to ensure accountability and avoid any misuse of power.

He stressed that the discovery of these transactions was part of an effort to expose irregularities within the system.

“Every 10 plots here belong to Ofori-Atta. Yes, every 10 plots. And why? Is that the only family we have in Ghana? These are facts. Nobody can change it. They can come and challenge me, and I’ll meet them anywhere in court, with records, with documents. They can come and challenge me,” he asserted, indicating that he had solid evidence to back up his claims.

Nunekpeku further emphasised the extent of the land deals, stating that companies linked to the former finance minister had been allocated vast amounts of land, ranging from 4 to 30 acres.

Government to establish mortgage desk to address housing challenges – SHC MD

Managing Director of State Housing Company, John Bawah play videoManaging Director of State Housing Company, John Bawah

The Managing Director of State Housing Company, John Bawah, has hinted at the government’s move to create a mortgage desk to make access to mortgages easier and more accessible to Ghanaians.

He noted that this initiative will create opportunities for Ghanaians to explore affordable housing options.

Bawah added that this forms part of his office’s efforts to bridge the housing gap in Ghana.

He spoke on the sidelines of the Ghana Green Building Summit 2025 on April 10, 2025, under the theme: “Re-Imagining Buildings and Cities for Economic and Social Prosperity.”

He said, “Two specific things that we are doing very quickly: One is establishing a mortgage desk. A mortgage specialist is joining our team to help our buyers access mortgages at competitive rates to purchase our properties.

“Secondly, we had our first meeting with Commercial Bank to help finance purchases for homebuyers as well as finance the construction of our projects. We are looking forward to these interventions delivering the results we’re aiming for, making it easier for Ghanaians to access affordable housing,” he added.

The SHC MD noted that the government is taking the lead in implementing green and sustainable housing initiatives.

He also acknowledged that, although change can be difficult for the average Ghanaian, innovative and sustainable building practices will gradually be adopted.

He said, “Technically, State Housing Company is a real estate developer, just like all the others. Our only difference is that we’re owned by the government and the people of Ghana. So, how do we encourage others to do the same? We lead by example. Our ministry is the overarching body in charge of real estate and housing development.

“And so, the ministry has several agencies that regulate and design policy for the industry. The direction will come from the ministry on the ground. We are the pacesetters,” Bawah noted.

He added, “Whatever the ministry is trying to introduce into the market, we need to take the lead on that. This way, we can pull everyone else along with us. That’s how we intend to do it.”

Lissu being transferred to Dar es Salaam following arrest in Ruvuma

0

The opposition party Chadema has confirmed that its national chairman, Mr Tundu Lissu, who was detained by police in Ruvuma Region, is currently being transported to Dar es Salaam.

Mr Lissu was reportedly taken into custody on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, shortly after addressing a public rally in Mbinga Town. The reason for his arrest has yet to be disclosed.

While Mr Lissu remains in police custody, three of his associates—two bodyguards and a party cadre identified as Mr Shija Shebeshi—have since been released.

Speaking on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Chadema’s Director of Communication and Publicity, Ms Brenda Rupia, confirmed that Mr Lissu’s transfer to Dar es Salaam began on Wednesday evening following his detention.

“The chairman (Tundu Lissu) is currently en route to Dar es Salaam. He left Songea yesterday evening. I’m not yet sure whether he has arrived,” Ms Rupia said.

She added that the party was proceeding with its planned activities, including a press briefing scheduled for 11 a.m. in Songea Town, where Chadema Vice Chairman for Mainland, Mr John Heche, is expected to address the media.

“After the press conference, we will go ahead with the final public rally, marking the end of our six-day tour across the southern regions of Lindi, Mtwara, and Ruvuma, where we have been promoting the No Reforms, No Election agenda,” Ms Rupia said.

The motive behind Mr Lissu’s arrest remains unclear. On Wednesday, Ruvuma Regional Police Commander Marco Chilya told Mwananchi Digital he was still verifying the incident.

“I am also following up on the matter. I haven’t received official confirmation yet. We will issue a formal statement once we have all the details,” he said when contacted.

During the commotion surrounding Mr Lissu’s arrest, police reportedly used tear gas to disperse members of the public who were attempting to prevent officers from taking him into custody.

Efforts to reach Commander Chilya and Police Spokesperson David Misime for further comment have so far been unsuccessful, as phone calls have gone unanswered.

Meanwhile, Mwananchi Digital Reporter from Songea reports that a meeting between journalists and Chadema national leaders, scheduled to take place at the party’s headquarters in Mfaranyaki Market, Songea Municipality, was disrupted after police fired tear gas at party members and supporters gathered outside.

Reports from the scene indicate that the disruption occurred when police arrived at the office at around 10am on April 10, 2025, and dispersed those waiting for Chadema’s Vice Chairman, John Heche.

Despite being hit by tear gas during the police attempt to disperse them, some party leaders and supporters returned to the scene, washing their faces with water and drinking, determined to wait for their leader.

They insisted the meeting would proceed as planned, even though the police had cordoned off the area, including the public meeting grounds at Viwanja vya Mataluwe.

Chadema’s Chairman in the Nyasa Zone, Mr Aden Mayala, declined to comment, stating he was awaiting the Vice Chairman’s arrival to address the journalists.

In the meantime, Chadema Vice Chairman forMainland Tanzania, John Heche, has announced that a scheduled public rally, which was to be addressed by party chairman Tundu Lissu, had been postponed indefinitely following Lissu’s arrest on Wednesday evening.

“We have received a letter from the Police Force postponing our rally, which was to be addressed by Hon. Tundu Lissu,” said Mr Heche.

“They have arrested him on treason charges, allegedly for speaking out about how the country’s resources are being looted and handed over to foreign entities—specifically the Chinese and Arabs.”

Mr Heche claimed the government is attempting to suppress public awareness of the alleged exploitation of national resources.

He stated that Chadema had adhered to all legal requirements in organizing the rally and that the police letter—cited as justification for what he described as a violation of human rights—would be forwarded to relevant authorities for international scrutiny.

“Since the police have issued this directive, we will comply for now. We will consult party leadership on the next course of action. However, we strongly condemn the arrest and demand the immediate release of our national chairman,” said Mr Heche. “The case has no merit. No one will be silenced or intimidated. The struggle continues.”

Mr Heche made the remarks while addressing party members, supporters, and local residents in Songea Town.

2025 TGMAs: I deserve them

0

Ghanaian artist Emmanuel Kwadwo Oware, popularly known as Ayisi, has expressed optimism about winning all three categories in which he’s nominated at the upcoming 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Ayisi received nominations for Songwriter of the Year, Best Male Vocal Performance, and Record of the Year at this year’s awards.

In an interview with TV3, Ayisi spoke confidently, stating that the recognition is long overdue.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say 10, no humility, no holding back. Just give it to me… I think it’s about time,” he declared.

In the Songwriter of the Year category, Ayisi faces stiff competition from industry heavyweights like Kofi Kinaata, Okyeame Kwame, Olive The Boy, and Team Eternity Ghana.

Acknowledging the challenge, he admitted, “Kofi Kinaata might give me a tough time because he’s an exceptional writer.”

For Record of the Year, his track “Can I Live” is up against hits such as Kofi Kinaata’s “Auntie Ama,” Small God’s “Fallen Angel” (feat. Black Sherif), and Kwabena Kwabena’s “Fakye Me” (feat. Obaapa Christy).

Reflecting on the hard work behind his nominated song, Ayisi declared, “Do I feel like I deserve it? Yes, yes, and yes. Just being nominated alone speaks volumes, but honestly, we put in the work, this should be ours.”

Kumasi Mayor orders traders off pavements ahead of decongestion exercise

0

Newly confirmed Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has issued a strong warning to traders operating on pavements within the Central Business District and Central Market to vacate their spots immediately.

The directive forms part of a major decongestion campaign set to begin next week, aimed at restoring order and improving movement across the city.

The Kumasi Mayor, who secured overwhelming support from Assembly Members, assumed office with a firm commitment to tackling congestion—an issue that has long plagued the metropolis.

Speaking after his confirmation on Thursday, April 10, Mr. Ofori Agyemang Boadi announced that the KMA would roll out a sweeping decongestion exercise in the coming week.

He emphasized that while the operation would not involve the military, it would be implemented using innovative approaches designed to maintain commercial activity while reclaiming public spaces.

In addition, he outlined plans to revive key stalled infrastructure projects, notably the Krofrom Market and the second phase of the Central Market redevelopment.

“With the Kejetia phase two, the contractors are on site, the energy that we are expecting to see is not what we are seeing. The regional minister has been working on it for some time.
“I will get a briefing from him on whatever has transpired. I believe that by the end of President Mahama’s tenure, the Kejetia market will be ready,” he stated.

Touching on sanitation, the Mayor expressed concern about the high level of indiscipline in the city and pledged to enforce KMA by-laws strictly.

“Kumasi should expect cooperation, discipline. There is a lot of indiscipline in our metropolis. In all humility, I am going to ensure strict compliance with the Assembly to the by-law that manages our city. If you are selling on the pavement, adjust yourself.

“If you are in the middle of any dual carriageway road, especially within the central business district, please get out of the place. Because from Wednesday, we will get on the street and make sure that we clear Kumasi from all the filth that we see.

“With the decongestion, we will not apply the forces of military men. Everybody wants to sell at Adum, so we will find some ingenious way to keep them in Adum and decongest Adum,” he directed.

IGP heads to Bawku after irate youth allegedly torch Ayariga’s house

0

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is leading a high-powered team of operations, investigation, and intelligence officers to Bawku in the Upper East Region to assess the security situation on the ground.

This move follows a violent confrontation between some youth and the police, during which one person, Fuseini Iddrisu, tragically lost his life.

Five others, including a police officer and an immigration officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Calm was restored in Bawku on April 9, 2025, through a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.

However, tensions flared again on Thursday, April 10, when a group of agitated youth allegedly set ablaze the residence of the Member of Parliament for the area, Mahama Ayariga. The incident occurred in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku.

Reports indicate that the MP’s residence was initially attacked by youth pelting stones, breaking windows and other parts of the building. The assault escalated into an arson attack the following morning.

The violence is believed to have been triggered by outrage over the alleged killing of a young man by the police.

In a statement released by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, April 10, the Service said, “While at Bawku, the IGP and his team will also commiserate with the deceased family, visit the injured persons on admission and reach out to officers who lost their properties as a result of the violence.”

The Police assured the public of their continued collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders to maintain peace, security, and law and order in Bawku.

‘Ntim Fordjour doesn’t deserve special treatment over drug allegations’

0

Former parliamentary candidate for the Oforikrom constituency, Henry Osei Akoto Former parliamentary candidate for the Oforikrom constituency, Henry Osei Akoto

A former parliamentary candidate for the Oforikrom constituency, Henry Osei Akoto, has taken a swipe at those suggesting that the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, cannot be arrested over recent allegations of cocaine smuggling and money laundering.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Osei Akoto, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that while ordinary Ghanaians can be arrested by security authorities when accused of wrongdoing, Members of Parliament should not be treated any differently.

He added that the Assin South legislator has embarrassed himself with baseless allegations and must be treated like any other Ghanaian.

“They can arrest an ordinary Ghanaian, but for an MP, they should send him an invitation? Does being an MP make you a special Ghanaian? Where from this logic? Arrest him!

“Ntim Fordjour doesn’t deserve any special treatment for his disgraceful and dishonourable act!” he wrote.

Background

Rev John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South and the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, alleged in a press conference on April 1, 2025, that two aircraft, an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.

He claimed that one of the aircraft, AirMED flight L823AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and stayed for five days without any record of transporting a patient.

Following these allegations, President John Dramani Mahama directed all security agencies to “immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable Member of Parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”

President Mahama also reaffirmed that Ghana maintains a zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking and will not allow the country to be used as a transit or destination for illicit drugs.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials visited Rev Ntim Fordjour’s residence to pick him up for questioning regarding his claims.

However, they left without arresting him following the intervention of key figures in the New Patriotic Party, including Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye criticises Accra Sports Stadium renovation, pushes for forensic audit

0

Nii Lante Vanderpuye is a former minister of sports Nii Lante Vanderpuye is a former minister of sports

Former sports minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has launched a scathing attack on the renovation works carried out at the Accra Sports Stadium, describing them as a sham and a complete waste of taxpayers’ money.

The facility, which has been undergoing a facelift since the ban of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium by the Confederation of African Football in October 2024, was revamped in an attempt to host Black Stars matches.

Workers were seen carrying out renovations ahead of the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifier against Chad in March 2025.

However, according to Vanderpuye, the state of the facility does not reflect the substantial sums reportedly spent on its renovation.

He has therefore called on the Sports Minister to commission a forensic audit and a full-scale investigation into the project.

“We conducted an analysis of the so-called renovations done at the Accra Sports Stadium. It’s a sham, a waste of money, and I have asked the Minister to conduct a forensic audit and investigation into the renovation of the Accra Sports Stadium. You can’t call this a renovation, given the amount of money that has been sunk into it,” he told Citi Sports on April 10, 2025.

He further proposed exploring the option of appointing a new management body to take charge of the facility.

“These issues must be addressed. After that, we can come to a conclusion: do we still want to manage the stadium the same way as in the past, or should we explore how we can bring in professional facility managers to handle these assets?” he added.

Dar es Salaam leads in number of street children

0

Dar es Salaam has emerged as the region with the highest number of street children in Tanzania Dar es Salaam has emerged as the region with the highest number of street children in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam has emerged as the region with the highest number of street children in Tanzania, followed closely by Dodoma, Mwanza, Mbeya, Arusha, and Iringa.

Other regions, including Kagera, Geita, Kigoma, and Shinyanga, also report considerable numbers of children living and working on the streets.

These alarming findings were shared by the minister for Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Dr Dorothy Gwajima, during a press briefing yesterday.

The announcement came ahead of the National Day for Street Children which will be observed on April 12, 2025, with regional events across Tanzania, culminating in a national gathering in Mtwara.

Dr Gwajima stressed the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of street children, in partnership with development organizations.

One of the main focus areas is resolving marital disputes, with 16,095 cases handled by the country’s social welfare offices between July 2024 and March 2025. Of these, 2,555 cases were taken to court, while 10,423 were successfully mediated.

“Addressing these issues is crucial in reducing the number of children who end up on the streets,” Dr Gwajima explained.

Between July 2024 and March 2025, the government rescued 8,372 street children. Of these, 1,056 were placed in children’s homes and safe houses, 86 found refuge with trusted foster families, and the remaining were reunited with their families.

Furthermore, 1,346 rescued children received school supplies and other essentials. Forty-three children enrolled in vocational training, with 27 having graduated, and two are now volunteering at elderly homes.

Dr Gwajima also highlighted the government’s efforts to support survivors of gender-based violence and child abuse.

From July to December 2024, 27,479 survivors, including 15,040 children, were supported through police gender desks and social welfare officers at local councils.

The government continues to provide care services at two state-run children’s homes in Kikombo (Dodoma) and Kurasini (Dar es Salaam), which together house 253 children.

These homes offer education, healthcare, psychological support, and other essential services.

Gov’t demolishes structures at Weija Ramsar after Caitec defies order

0

The government has commenced the demolition of structures at the Weija Ramsar site after Transport company Caitec failed to comply with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to reverse illegal landfilling in the area.

The President had issued the order during a recent tour of flood-prone zones in Accra, instructing the company to undo the reclamation at its own cost.

This move was aimed at facilitating proper dredging and preventing flooding as the rainy season approaches.

Despite the directive, a follow-up inspection by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on Thursday, April 10, revealed that no action had been taken by the company.
In response, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, cautioned that the law would be enforced if the company failed to comply with the directive.

The warning followed concerns that the defiance could jeopardize flood prevention efforts in the region.

Subsequently, the demolition exercise has begun to restore the site and enable the planned dredging works to proceed.

“While in Bawku, the IGP and his team will also commiserate with the family of the deceased, visit the injured persons currently on admission, and reach out to officers who lost their properties as a result of the violence,” the statement further noted.

The police also stated that, together with the Ghana Armed Forces, they have restored calm in Bawku, adding that “security has since been intensified in Bawku and surrounding communities as joint police and military patrols continue.”

Meanwhile, the Bawku residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, who is also the Majority Leader in Parliament, was allegedly set on fire by unidentified arsonists.

According to multiple news outlets on April 10, 2025, the incident followed a similar attack on police buildings in the town.

One person reportedly died in the arson attack on the police buildings, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

In response, the Member of Parliament, who also serves as the Majority Leader, issued a statement on April 9, 2025, condemning the recent shooting incident.

In his statement, Mahama Ayariga distanced himself from the decisions taken by the law enforcement officers.

I didn’t inherit any galamsey drones, ask Minerals Commission, IMCIM – Abu Jinapor

0

Former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has distanced himself from recent concerns over drones allegedly procured to aid the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), insisting that he neither received the drones nor any documentation about them during his tenure.

His comments come after the Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah disclosed that he has not seen any of the drones reportedly procured by the Akufo-Addo government to fight illegal mining.

Speaking at a meeting with the management and staff of the Minerals Commission in Accra on April 7, 2025, Mr Buah stressed the importance of technology in tackling galamsey but said he has yet to locate the drones since assuming office.

Reacting to this development in an interview on Joy FM, Mr Jinapor clarified that the drones in question were reportedly purchased in 2018 by the now-defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), chaired by Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

He explained that when he assumed office as Lands Minister, there was no formal handover or documentation regarding the existence or location of the said drones.

“These drones that are being talked about are drones which were supposedly bought in 2018 by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, which was headed by Prof Frimpong-Boateng.

“When I became minister, there was no handover note which suggested that drones had been bought; neither were there any drones handed over to me as minister,” he stressed.

Mr Jinapor, therefore, directed all enquiries about the drones to the Minerals Commission, the statutory body responsible for mining records, or to the leadership of the defunct IMCIM.

“So the correct place to direct the enquiry will be the Minerals Commission, which is the repository of all records about mining, and therefore they should have records of it, and/or the leadership of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining headed by Prof Frimpong-Boateng and his colleagues,” he advised.

When asked if he had queried the Inter-Ministerial Committee about the matter during his tenure, the former minister replied in the affirmative.

“I made queries and enquiries. There were no records of these drones … they just did not exist at the time I became a minister. Were they bought? Were they not bought? How were they handled? All these questions can be answered by the Inter-Ministerial Committee.”

Sixty youth from cocoa-growing communities complete Cargil, ICI apprenticeship programme

0

Accra, April, 10, GNA – A total of 60 adolescent apprentices from cocoa-growing communities in Ghana have successfully completed a year-long vocational and technical training programme spearheaded by Cargill, in partnership with the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI).

The initiative formed part of Cargill’s long-term Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) strategy under the Cargill Cocoa Promise, focused on identifying, preventing, and remediating child labour within the cocoa supply chain.

A graduation ceremony was held at Sefwi Bekwai in the Western North Region on Wednesday, where graduates were presented with official TVET certificates from the Ministry of Education and received tools of trade to launch their careers.

The apprenticeship specifically supports 15–17-year-olds in cocoa-growing communities beyond compulsory school age and often face limited access to further education or skills training.

Through practical training in carpentry, tailoring, and glass fabrication, the initiative equips youth with income-generating skills for self-reliance and community resilience.

Mr Max Essoh Latte, Managing Director of Cargill Ghana, said promoting human rights were fundamental to the work of the Organisation, hence the decision to introduce the programme.

“We believe that the best way to safeguard the future of cocoa is to improve the livelihoods and wellbeing of farmers and their families. This programme empowers young people with real opportunities to succeed,” he said.

Mr Mike Arthur, Country Director of ICI, said the joint programme was a “great example” of how child labour and poverty in cocoa-growing communities could be reduced.

“By investing in adolescents and providing access to vocational training closer to home, we can equip them with skills that help them be economically independent in the future, allowing them to support their families, diversifying income in cocoa-growing communities, and reducing the prevalence of child labour,” he said.

Mr Samuel Apana, Sustainability Operations Manager at Cargill, said more youth would be added to the programme in the coming months, adding that the Organisation combined short-term support with long-term investment in education, women’s empowerment, and community infrastructure.

Some community leaders including Oyeadieyie Basaoe Kwadwo Armah III, Omanhene of Sefwi Bekwai Traditional Area applauded Cargill’s leadership and called on other private sector actors to follow suit in supporting youth development.

Government to phase out double track system by end of 2027

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government is working towards phasing out the double-track system in senior high schools by the end of 2027.

Speaking during a meeting with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) on Thursday, April 10, 2025, he acknowledged that the double-track system was introduced as a necessary response to infrastructure challenges.

“We expect that by the end of 2027, the double-track system will be a thing of the past. To those who believe it should be hailed, and to those who see it as a politically necessary response to inadequate infrastructure that supported the noble dream of expanding access to secondary education — the reduced contact hours between learners and teachers cannot be a desirable academic training model. It cannot be. Therefore, we all need to work together to reverse it,” he noted.

The double-track system was introduced in 2018 as a temporary measure to accommodate the surge in student enrollment under the Free SHS policy introduced by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports are now at least 145%

0

US President, Donald Trump US President, Donald Trump

President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports are now at least 145%, far above the level many economists said could decimate US-China trade.

Trump is imposing a 125% charge designed to both counter America’s trade deficit with China and punish Beijing for retaliating against US import taxes.

The number, published in a White House memo Thursday, comes in addition to a 20% levy put into place earlier this year over China’s role in fentanyl trafficking.

The staggering US tariffs on the world’s second largest economy have triggered a tit-for-tat trade war that has unnerved global financial markets.

Stocks fell on Thursday one day after the biggest buying spree in years, as investors braced for more trade hostility. The S&P 500 Index fell about 3.5% on the news, as euphoria again gave way to unease.

rump’s tariff rollout has been marked by confusion, as Trump has repeatedly shifted course. The president on Wednesday put off plans to impose higher levies on dozens of nations hours after they went into place, even as he escalated his trade fight with Beijing.

The US’s other trading partners will face a 10% blanket import tax to allow for a 90-day period to negotiate individual trade agreements. If that doesn’t succeed, the higher duties are set to go into place on July 9.

The president’s order published Thursday raised taxes even further on small packages from China that were previously not taxed, which could hit American shoppers purchasing goods from retailers like Temu and SheIn Group Ltd.

The US will tax imports of items priced up to $800 at a rate of 120% of their value, up from a prior plan to levy a 90% ad valorem tax.

The per postal item fee on goods entering after May 2 and before June 1 will rise to $100 from the planned $75. Parcels entering after June 1 will face a charge of $200 per item instead of $150 announced previously.

Watch Rio Ferdinand’s reaction to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s stunning goal against Aston Villa

Ferdinand (L) and some commentators Ferdinand (L) and some commentators

Rio Ferdinand couldn’t hide his reaction after witnessing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia score a breathtaking goal against Aston Villa. The Georgian star lit up the game with a moment of pure magic — and Ferdinand’s response said it all.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) cruised to a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League at the Parc des Princes.

Morgan Rogers gave the visitors a surprise lead against the run of play in the first half, but PSG responded with stunning strikes from wingers Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on either side of the break.

With minutes left on the clock, Nuno Mendes scored to seal the 3-1 win for PSG. Though all of PSG’s goals were impressive, it was Kvaratskhelia’s strike that truly stole the spotlight.

Picking up the ball just beyond the halfway line, the Georgian winger exploded down the left flank, leaving Villa defenders in his wake.

With dazzling footwork and incredible close control, he weaved past Axel Disasi, shifted effortlessly onto his left foot, and unleashed a thunderous strike that gave Emiliano Martinez no chance in goal.

The goal drew an incredible reaction from former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who was on commentary duty. The former England international was in awe of Kvaratskhelia’s brilliance, shouting in excitement and celebrating alongside his co-commentators, who clapped in appreciation of the wonder goal.

The looting must end – Franklin Cudjoe urges NDC not to lose focus

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain resolute in their pursuit of the missing ECG containers, and prevent the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) from distracting them.

According to him, the NPP is using allegations of the ruling government being involved in drug trafficking and money laundering to distract them from making progress in the search for the over 1,300 missing ECG containers.

Ntim Fordjour: Minority alleges parliamentary immunity breach

0

The minority in parliament on Thursday raised issues with the immunity of Assin South Member of Parliament, Rev Ntim Fordjour, arguing it may have been breached following the attempted raid on his residence in connection with his recent drug trafficking allegations.

The search involving security operatives from National Security sparked a heated debate after footage showing the operatives entering Fordjour’s house went viral.

Rev. Fordjour recently alleged that the Kotoka International Airport may have been used for suspicious drugs and money laundering activities.

In response to the search, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin suggested that Rev. Fordjour’s parliamentary immunity may have been breached.

He pointed to an established protocol, explaining that when MPs are needed for a search or investigation, security agencies must first send a written request to the Speaker of Parliament. The Speaker would then arrange for the MP’s release…

“I don’t understand why the government is defying such an arrangement with Parliament,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“We are going to prompt the Speaker about this incident. The Minister for the Interior, who is responsible for national security matters and who is also a Member of Parliament, should also be written to because we don’t understand this ‘Rambo style’ approach.”

He added that this was particularly concerning because similar searches had been handled according to the established protocol in past parliaments.

Afenyo-Markin condemned the search, emphasising that it created an atmosphere of insecurity for MPs.

“What we saw this morning was appalling. Armed police bringing National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials into the matter means no MP is safe, no politician is safe,” he stated. “What they have done is a breach of privilege and unity. It’s so obvious.”

“If any letter had been written for this matter, it would have been brought to my attention. When letters were written for Kwame A-Plus and other colleagues, they came to light. This is the same ‘Rambo style’ used when they attempted to arrest our brother from Akwatia,” he remarked.

In response to the security search and ongoing concerns, Joy News understands that the Minority in Parliament has formally petitioned the Speaker to act swiftly to uphold constitutional provisions and parliamentary protocols.

The petition calls for the Speaker to investigate the matter and ensure that Rev. Fordjour’s parliamentary immunity is respected, particularly in light of the search at his home.
