MUSIGA advances minimum wage initiative with new consultant engagement, stakeholder talks

S K Agyemang, General Secretary of MUSIGA S K Agyemang, General Secretary of MUSIGA

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is intensifying efforts to establish a minimum wage for musicians; a move aimed at ensuring fair remuneration and improving livelihoods within the industry.

MUSIGA is currently in the process of engaging Kingsley Ofei-Nkansah, popularly known as Sax, as a consultant to support this critical initiative.

Additionally, MUSIGA has held productive meetings with the owners of +233, Ghana’s leading venue for live performances, to discuss the implementation of the minimum wage.

These engagements mark important steps in MUSIGA’s strategy to collaborate with key industry stakeholders to secure sustainable and fair compensation for musicians.

The union’s efforts come amid ongoing conversations sparked by statements from prominent religious leaders.

The Founder of the Lighthouse Chapel, Rev Dag Heward-Mills, and Rev Elishah Amoako have both commented on the issue of compensating musicians for their skills and contributions.

Against this backdrop, establishing a minimum wage based on fair remuneration is seen as the way forward for the Ghanaian music industry.

S K Agyemang, General Secretary of MUSIGA, stated, “Our discussions with Kingsley Ofei-Nkansah and the owners of +233 demonstrate our commitment to securing fair pay for musicians.

“The statements from respected leaders like Rev Dag Heward-Mills and Rev. Elishah Amoako reinforce the necessity of this initiative.

“MUSIGA is dedicated to ensuring that musicians receive the recognition and compensation they deserve through a structured minimum wage system.”

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association is championing a bold move to locally manufacture oil filters in Ghana.

According to the association’s chairman, Henry Okyere, discussions with potential investors are already underway, aiming to reduce the country’s reliance on imported parts.

“Our aim is to change the narrative,” he said.

“We want to ensure that, in our time, Ghana produces oil filters locally, shifting from import dependency to local production.”

Speaking at the West African Automotive Show in Nigeria, Okyere highlighted the economic impact such a move could have, from job creation to stabilizing the cedi.

He emphasised the need for public-private partnerships to develop a complete value chain for the spare parts industry in Ghana.

“We want to move beyond trade to actual production. Ghana has the capacity to become a hub for auto parts manufacturing in West Africa,” he stated.

Okyere also highlighted the association’s success in connecting with shaft and crank sellers offering products at more affordable prices, describing it as a step toward making the industry more competitive and accessible.

The association is also advocating for Ghana to host the annual WAAS expo in the near future.

In a related statement, the Kumasi Chamber of Commerce has called for stronger government support for local manufacturers like Kantanka.

“We need to pay attention to our own,” Abaase stated.

“With the right support, companies like Kantanka can scale up production and contribute significantly to our economy.”

The KOFI ANNAN International Peacekeeping Training Centre has ended a two-week intensive training on maritime security and transnational organised crime for the marine sector.

The training programme, which began on April 28 to May 9, aims to educate security personnel, civilians, and industry players about new developments in maritime security and transnational organised crime, as well as to improve the current coordination, cooperation, and exchange of information among maritime stakeholders.

Courses studied included maritime terrorism, piracy and armed robbery at sea, human trafficking and migrant smuggling, human security management, marine environmental pollution, illegal migration at sea, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, drug trafficking, money laundering, among others.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the training, the Director of Training at KAIPTC, Col Lawrence Deku, mentioned that the marine sector has economic importance, which is crucial for international trade and the movement of resources.

He stressed that the course has highlighted the complexity of transnational organised crime, such as piracy, and its impact on the economy, which requires shared responsibility for the maritime security sector to deal with the situation.

“The complexity and dynamism of transnational organised crimes, such as piracy, and how they impact maritime security have been highlighted throughout the course,” he stated.

He urged participants to use knowledge gained from their training in their various organisations and improve on collaboration, cooperation, and information sharing to help the maritime security of the Gulf of Guinea region, in order to combat transnational organised crime at sea.

The Deputy Director for Special Projects of the Ghana Navy and class head for the 2025 year group, Lt Cdr Shalom Elorm Yao Morladza, in his valedictorian speech, expressed gratitude to the KAIPTC for the training, noting that the network built over the training will be used to resolve and secure the maritime spaces and dissolve the network that threatens the peace of the marine sector.

Principal Maritime Safety Officer of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Lawal Ayodeji Daniel, who doubled as a course participant, mentioned that the training has broadened his knowledge in the maritime sector and looks forward to adopting the new policies to improve the maritime sector in Nigeria.

The training brought together Ghanaians and other African participants from the Gambia, Liberia, the Republic of Congo, and Nigeria within the maritime security sector.

“Did Money Buy Influence?” – Wontumi’s Bold Claims About Financing NPP’s Internal Elections

News Hub Creator1h

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, is once again making headlines with his generous financial gestures.

According to MyNewsGH, Recently, he revealed that he funded all the forms for polling station, constituency, and regional elections in 2014, 2018, and 2022, even covering the costs for his opponents in the Ashanti region.

“I paid for all polling station, constituency, and regional forms… even for my opponent,” he stated in an interview on Wontumi TV.

While his supporters see this as a testament to his loyalty and dedication to the party, the gesture has also raised concerns about the growing role of money in party politics.

Some are questioning whether such large financial contributions create a disproportionate influence over party decisions, especially within the grassroots level.

Chairman Wontumi went on to recall his other contributions, including funding the NPP’s 2015 Tamale congress to the tune of one billion old cedis and distributing school supplies nationwide during the party’s time in opposition.

However, he was quick to clarify that his actions were not motivated by any desire for government positions: “I’ve never held any government position. I’ve done it all from my own resources.”

GoldBod’s magic trick: Turning $279m into $897m – Where did the extra come from?

0

Ghana’s gold sector is celebrating an unprecedented milestone, with April 2025 exports hitting a staggering 897.6 million, the highest in over two years.

This historic surge, announced by the Ghana GoldBoard (GoldBod), comes just weeks after the government allocated a $279 million revolving fund to support small-scale miners. But beneath the euphoria lies a troubling question: How does a $279 million fund generate nearly 900 million in exports in just one month?

A statistical miracle or creative accounting?

According to Prof. Isaac Boadi, Dean, Faculty of Accounting and Finance, UPSA and Executive Director, IERPP, the numbers defy simple logic. April’s gold exports was 9,295 kilograms (9.295 tonnes) which represents an 80% surge compared to earlier months, where earnings averaged around $500 million. At 96,560 per kilogram, Ghana’s gold is fetching a premium, but even at this rate, the math doesn’t add up.

The government’s $279 million revolving fund was meant to purchase 3 tonnes per week (12 tonnes/month) from small−scale miners. Yet, April’s exports fell shortly at 9.295 tonnes, leaving 2.7 tonnes unaccounted for. Worse, if GoldBod spent the entire fund buying gold at market rates, it should have exported only $289.7 million worth, not $897.6 million.

Where Did the Extra $600M Come From?

Three possibilities emerge:

  1. Large-scale miners dominated exports – If the $897.6 million includes major mining firms, then the revolving fund’s impact is overstated.
  2. Private sector boosted sales – GoldBod may have blended its purchases with private gold exports, inflating the figures.
  3. Exchange rate manipulation? – A sharply depreciated cedi could artificially inflate dollar earnings, masking stagnant production.

A revolving fund is supposed to recycle money: buy gold, sell it, and reuse the proceeds. But if $279 million magically turns into $897.6 million, either Ghana has discovered financial Magic or the numbers are misleading.

Example:

  • Fund Capacity: 279 million buys 2.9 tonnes at 96,560/kg.
  • April’s Reality: 9.295 tonnes were exported, requiring $897.6 million in purchases, triple the fund’s size.
  • The fund alone cannot explain the export boom.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson hailed the revolving fund as a game-changer. But unless the government clarifies:

  • Who really contributed to the $897.6 million?
  • Why is the export volume below the promised 12 tonnes?
  • Is the revolving fund already depleted?

…the so-called “historic” gold boom risks being exposed as a statistical illusion.

Police Shakes ‘Thinka Island’, Arrests 34

Some of the suspects nabbed at Thinka Island

AN UNANNOUNCED police swoop in ‘Thinka Island’, a known illicit drug base in the heart of Kumasi, has led to the arrest of 34 suspects.

The operation, which the police has deemed as very successful, also led to the seizure of quantities of items, suspected to be illicit drugs.

According to the police, the swoop at Thinka Island is to demonstrate to all drug peddlers and users in Kumasi that their days are numbered.

The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, is said to have directed the police to stop all drug usage and selling activities in Thinka Island.

Based on the minister’s directive, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, said the police conducted the swoop.

He said, “The arrest of 34 suspects and the seizure of various suspected illegal substances demonstrate our resolve to ensure public safety.

“All suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. The retrieved exhibits are being processed for forensic examination, and those found culpable will be duly prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

DSP Ahianyo, however, did not disclose the names of the 34 suspects and the date that the police carried out the operation, perhaps for security reasons.

He commended the efforts of the Regional Operations team and the Drug Law Enforcement Unit for their swift and decisive action, which has led to the arrest of the 34 suspects.

DSP Ahianyo indicated that the swoop at Thinka Island would not be a nine-day wonder, stressing that the police would in the coming days carry out similar operations in the city.

“The Command assures the general public that similar operations will continue across the region as we work tirelessly to dismantle drug networks and restore peace in our communities,” he stated.

“Regional Police Command wishes to reiterate its unwavering commitment to the fight against drug-related crimes and the protection of lives and property,” he concluded.

Nana Akua Addo Advocates Curated Red Carpets and Appearance Fees in Ghana

Nana Akua AddoNana Akua Addo

Ghanaian actress and fashion icon Nana Akua Addo has proposed that event organizers implement curated guest lists and appearance fees for red carpet events to elevate industry standards.

Speaking on 3Lounge with AJ Sarpong on May 16, 2025, Addo emphasized the need for formalized practices in Ghana’s entertainment sector.

“Our red carpet culture has matured. Organizers should intentionally select attendees and factor in appearance fees,” Addo stated. “AJ, you know the costs involved in styling hair, makeup, designers. These investments deserve recognition.” Her remarks followed high-profile appearances at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) and Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), where celebrities showcased elaborate designs.

Addo also dismissed speculation about avoiding recent TGMA red carpets, reaffirming her loyalty to organizer Charterhouse. “Charterhouse gave me my first platform. I’d never decline their invite it’s like returning home,” she explained. The clarification addressed public assumptions that her absence stemmed from dissatisfaction, despite her participation in global events like the AMVCA in Nigeria.

Her dual focus advocating for professionalized red carpets while honoring her career roots highlights the balance between innovation and tradition in Ghana’s entertainment landscape. The proposal aligns with trends in Nigeria and South Africa, where appearance fees and curated guest lists are common, reflecting broader efforts to formalize creative sector practices.

Western Region Unanimously Confirms 14 MMDCE Nominees

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson commended assembly members for unanimously approving all 14 Municipal and Metropolitan District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees, each securing over 90% support.

The confirmations, completed in a seven-day exercise across districts from Wassa East to Jomoro, emphasized bipartisan cooperation to prioritize regional development.

Only two female nominees—Priscilla Yorke (Amenfi West) and Sophia Aubynn (Mpohor)—were confirmed, representing 14.3% of the total. Newly appointed leaders, including Prestea Huni Valley’s Dr. Matthew Ayee and Shama’s Paul Otis Dentu, pledged to advance infrastructure, education, and economic growth. Ayee emphasized healthcare and environmental sustainability, while Dentu vowed collaborative governance to meet community goals.

The Jomoro assembly session was marked by mourning, with members wearing black attire to honor colleagues Francis Armoh and Ransford Nana Otuo Darko, who died in a motor accident days earlier. MP Dorcas Affo-Toffey urged unity: “Let’s work together for a brighter future in Jomoro,” she stated during the somber proceedings.

Regional Minister Nelson praised the assemblies’ focus on progress: “Their ability to prioritize development over differences is commendable,” he said, noting the seamless election of presiding members.

The confirmations reflect Ghana’s push to strengthen local governance, though gender parity remains a challenge. Nationally, women hold just 18% of MMDCE roles as of 2024, underscoring systemic gaps in political representation.

Why Sam George is trending

0

Sam George is the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations Sam George is the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, appears to have incurred the wrath of some Ghanaian netizens who have accused him of failing to deliver on his promises, particularly on high costs of data.

The criticisms directed at the minister appears to stem from public frustrations over the high costs of data services across the country’s major telecommunications networks.

Critics contend that the minister’s apparent silence on the rising costs of mobile data sharply contrasts with his previously vocal positions on tariff increases while in opposition, casting doubts on his commitment to the promises he made during that time.

They further argue that the rising costs of data — a basic necessity — has long been a persistent issue in the country, with data bundles depleting quickly despite their high costs, making access unaffordable for many.

In light of these concerns, they are calling on the minister — who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram — to address the high costs of data in the country, urging him to take decisive actions to reduce prices and enhance accessibility.

Undocumented migrants endure harsh weather awaiting repatriation

0

Hundreds of undocumented migrants arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) during a swoop in Accra are still being held at the GIS headquarters, awaiting repatriation to their respective countries.

The migrants, picked up on Friday, May 16, are enduring harsh conditions as they wait to be transported. Many, including children, are sleeping in the open without mattresses or lighting.

Canopies and mobile toilets have been provided, but the environment remains inadequate, with mosquito exposure and crying children heard throughout the area.

A visit by Channel One News at 7:04 p.m. confirmed that the foreign nationals remained in custody. While the Head of Public Relations at GIS, Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, earlier assured that all detainees would be deported by the end of the day, it remains unclear where they will sleep if transportation arrangements fail to materialize.

The operation led to the arrest of 2,241 undocumented migrants described by GIS as foreign beggars. They were apprehended from eleven locations in the capital and include 384 adult males, 525 adult females, 577 male children, and 755 female children.

The GIS has yet to provide a timeline for completing the repatriation process.

IERPP cautions GoldBod: Ghana gold export math discrepancy explained

0

Ghana’s gold export figures for April 2025 raise serious questions. The government allocated $279 million to buy gold from small-scale miners, yet reported $897.6 million in exports, a 220% increase in revenue.

This breakdown examines whether the math adds up or if hidden factors explain the discrepancy.

Simplified Math Breakdown

What $279 million can actually buy?

  • Gold Price (April 2025): $96,560 per kg
  • Calculated Purchase:
    $279,000,000 ÷ $96,560/kg ≈ 2,890 kg (2.89 tonnes)

Problem:
Ghana exported 9,295 kg (9.295 tonnes)—6.4 tonnes more than the fund could buy.

Government’s Promise vs. Reality

  • Promised Purchase: 3 tonnes/week = 12 tonnes/month
  • Actual Export: 9.295 tonnes
  • Missing Gold: 12 – 9.295 = 2.7 tonnes

Contradiction:
Even the promised 12 tonnes exceeds what $279M could buy (only 2.89 tonnes).

Revenue Mismatch

  • Expected Revenue (from $279M fund):
    2.89 tonnes × $96,560/kg = $279M (just breaking even).
  • Actual Export Revenue: $897.6M
  • Discrepancy: $897.6M – $279M = $618.6M extra

Question:
Where did the additional $600M+ come from?

Possible Explanations

  1. Other Gold Sources: Large mining companies contributed (not small miners).
  2. Old Stockpiles: Sold stored gold from reserves.
  3. Exchange Rate Trick: Cedi depreciation inflated dollar earnings.
  4. Overstated Numbers: Misreporting or creative accounting.

The numbers do not logically align. If the government only spent $279M, the exports should have been $279M, not $897M. The $600M+ gap suggests:

  • Unreported gold sources, or
  • Inflated export figures.

Prosecute agents using kids to beg

0

Executive Director of Child Rights International, Bright Appiah, has called on security agencies to go beyond street evacuations and begin prosecuting adults who exploit children for begging.

His comments follow the arrest of over 2,000 street children and their guardians in a major swoop aimed at tackling the growing issue of streetism.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on May 16, he lauded the crackdown but emphasised that arrests alone are not enough.

According to him, legal measures must be used to hold accountable those who put children on the streets.

He urged authorities to prioritise child protection in the ongoing effort to address streetism, stressing that sustainable impact will come from enforcing laws and strengthening institutional collaboration.

“There are areas that the state can involve prosecution because when you look at the Beggars Act, it calls for prosecution of those who would engage the child to beg on the street or those who will find themselves begging on the street. If you are begging as an adult, the state can also institute a prosecution action against you.

“The state can also look at the role that you play in allowing a child to engage in begging. These are the options available for the state to engage in,” he said.

ICC chief Khan steps down while sexual misconduct claim investigated

0

Amsterdam, May 16, (dpa/GNA) – Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, has temporarily stepped down in connection with an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct, the court announced on Friday.

He will relinquish his duties until the investigation is concluded, the court said.

A staff member has accused the ICC chief of sexual misconduct. Khan, 55, has denied the allegations as baseless and personally called for an investigation.

Media reports have linked the alleged misconduct to the court’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

Reports said Khan only applied for the arrest warrant after the misconduct allegations were made.

Court under pressure

Khan’s temporary withdrawal comes at a time when the court is under considerable pressure from the United States following the arrest warrants issued against Netanyahu and his former defence minister Yoav Galant for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

US President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on the court and, in particular, on prosecutor Khan, jeopardizing the work of the court.

The United States and Israel do not recognize the court, which prosecutes suspects for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and aggression.

Arrest warrant against Putin

Khan has been chief prosecutor of the court since 2021. At his request, an international arrest warrant was also issued against Russian President Vladimir Putin on suspicion of war crimes in Ukraine.

‘NPP has become the National Press Conferences Party’ – Edem Agbana teases

0

Edem Agbana is the Member of Parliament for Ketu North Edem Agbana is the Member of Parliament for Ketu North

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of engaging in excessive media commentaries over the suspension of the Chief Justice.

According to him, the party appears more focused on press briefings than addressing substantive national issues.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on May 15, 2025, Agbana sarcastically referred to the NPP as the ‘National Press Conferences Party,’ a jab at what he considers to be the party’s over-reliance on the media to drive its political agenda.

“You’ve held a number of press conferences on the suspension of the Chief Justice. NPP has now become the National Press Conferences Party. Every day, every day holding press conference saying President Mahama has breached the law in the suspension of the Chief Justice. Which of the law did he breach?” he asked.

Edem Agbana’s comment comes in the wake of a series of press conferences held by the NPP, in which the party accused President John Dramani Mahama of acting unlawfully in the suspension of the Chief Justice.

The NPP claims the president violated constitutional provisions governing the judiciary and maintains that due process was not followed, that the move undermines judicial independence.

However, Agbana believes the NPP’s response has been overly theatrical and politically motivated.

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo following the establishment of a prima facie case in response to three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.

The decision, in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and taken in consultation with the Council of State, was announced on Tuesday, April 22.

Amidu Accuses Council Member of Breaching Constitutional Protocol

0

Sophia Akuffo

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has publicly criticized Council of State member Sophia Akuffo for her recent comments on judicial removal processes, alleging she violated her oath of confidentiality.

The controversy stems from Akuffo’s remarks at a Constitutional Review Committee forum where she described Article 146 of Ghana’s constitution as “unfair” and advocated for appeal rights for impeached Chief Justices.

Amidu contends the former Chief Justice overstepped ethical boundaries by publicly discussing a constitutional provision after participating in confidential Council deliberations regarding current Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s investigation. “Her conduct breaches the Council’s confidentiality and undermines the ongoing process,” Amidu stated, referencing Supreme Court precedents that mandate secrecy in such proceedings.

The critique highlights apparent contradictions in Akuffo’s position – while currently advocating for judicial appeal rights, she reportedly didn’t raise similar concerns during her tenure as Chief Justice regarding other judicial removals. Amidu also recalled that Akuffo herself faced unresolved removal petitions during her service.

The exchange reveals deepening tensions within Ghana’s judicial oversight mechanisms, with Amidu framing Akuffo’s intervention as potentially compromising the integrity of constitutional processes designed to remain insulated from public debate until concluded.

BoG Pushes Back Against Dollar Ban Claims

Dr. Johnson Asiama

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has dismissed claims that it is planning to prohibit over-the-counter (OTC) foreign exchange withdrawals, saying no changes have been made to the current regulations.

In a public notice dated Thursday, May 15, the central bank stated emphatically that cash withdrawals in foreign currency from Foreign Exchange Accounts (FEA) and Foreign Currency Accounts (FCA) remain permitted, as per existing rules.

“For non-FEA and non-FCA account holders, forex purchases for travel outside Ghana are allowed but capped at US$10,000 or its equivalent per person per trip,” the BoG said.

These transactions must be backed by a valid passport, visa, and a confirmed travel ticket, in line with BoG Notice BG/GOV/SEC/2014/09. The notice also confirmed that cheques and cheque books may continue to be issued on both FEA and FCA accounts.

“The Bank has not contemplated reviewing these existing measures,” the statement emphasised, in an apparent response to mounting speculation and commentary in the public domain.

This clarification comes after comments by Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central and BoG board member, Isaac Adongo, sparked widespread confusion and concern among account holders.

Speaking on Joy News, Mr. Adongo claimed the government and the central bank are preparing to introduce a law that would effectively block people from withdrawing foreign currency they deposit into their bank accounts, unless for very specific purposes.

“If you put your dollars in the bank account, it is okay. We are happy with that. You can only get dollars if you are going to use them for a dollar-denominated transaction,” he said.

According to him, the upcoming law will enforce a near-blanket ban, with the BoG supplying cedis instead of dollars in most cases. He framed it as part of the Mahama-led NDC administration’s broader strategy to stabilise the local currency, the cedi.

“We are eliminating dollar speculation through bank accounts. Deposited dollars will only be released for legitimate foreign transactions—dollars are meant for spending abroad, not domestically,” he added.

Mr. Adongo insisted the measure will help sustain the cedi’s recent appreciation, which saw it strengthen from around GH₵15.50 to the US dollar between February and April 2025 to about GH₵13.10 in early May—its strongest in a year.

Some analysts have credited the appreciation to a combination of factors, including the government’s export performance and a new agreement between Goldbod and nine mining firms, which secured 20% of their monthly gold output (approximately 200kg) for domestic purchase using cedis.

Ghana recorded over $2.3 billion in gold exports between January and February 2025—the highest two-month total in more than a decade.

Currency strength has also been recorded across other foreign denominations: the pound sterling fell from GHS20.60 to GHS17.45, the euro from GH₵17.72 to GH₵14.78, and the Canadian dollar from GH₵11.00 to GH₵9.40 over the same period.

Despite these gains, Mr. Adongo’s comments drew criticism from the banking community, particularly from the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB).

GAB Chief Executive, John Awuah, pushed back firmly, saying no such directive has been issued to banks.

“I can say on authority that, as a community of banks, we have not received any directive that bars over-the-counter withdrawal of USD or any other foreign currency,” Mr. Awuah said.

He further cautioned against misinterpretation of policy direction, adding that banks do not take instructions from individual BoG board members.

“With all due respect to Mr. Isaac Adongo, we do not take instructions from board directors. Our directives come from the Bank of Ghana under the authority of the Governor,” he reiterated.

While Mr. Awuah acknowledged that justification is often required to access foreign currency, he was clear, “There is no blanket prohibition.”

He speaks without thinking – Asare-Bediako tears into Adongo

0

Broadcast journalist Gordon Asare-Bediako has sharply criticized Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Hon. Isaac Adongo, following the latter’s public comments suggesting the Bank of Ghana (BoG) plans to tighten restrictions on over-the-counter US dollar withdrawals from financial institutions.

Speaking during a radio interview, Mr. Adongo—who also serves on the board of the BoG—framed the move as part of broader efforts to stabilize the Ghanaian cedi and prevent further depreciation.

UN demands global public pressure to get aid deliveries into Gaza

0

“The situation as it has developed now is so grotesquely abnormal that some popular pressure on leaders around the world needs to happen,” OCHA spokesman Jens Laerke said in Geneva.

Israel’s military has not allowed aid deliveries into the Gaza Strip for more than two months. The armed forces accuse the Palestinian Hamas terrorist organization of reselling aid supplies to the increasingly suffering population to fund fighters and weapons.

UN aid workers reject working with new initiative

Laerke said the OCHA has implemented robust security measures to prevent such misuse, although the diversion of small amounts can never be completely ruled out. The UN has previously demonstrated its ability to assist people in the Gaza Strip effectively, he said.

Laerke criticized a humanitarian aid plan, supported by Israel and the United States, via the newly established Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which would provide aid.

He said the GHF is vastly underfunded and his organization has not received any information about potential cooperation with it.

“But we think it is a bad plan in any case, so we are not going to participate in it.”

The borehole

Residents of “Lion So”, an area at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region are in a state of shock after a 22-year-old man who had allegedly taken Tramadol 225mg tablet fell into a borehole.

Kofi Samuel, popularly known as ‘PTA’, was said to have taken the potent opioid drug commonly known as ‘Red’ on Wednesday, May 7.

‘Red’ is an illegally manufactured synthetic opioid known for its depressing and euphoric effects, and is usually sold on the black market.

According to some friends of the deceased, at about 5pm on Wednesday,  ‘PTA’, after taking the hard substance, told them (friends) that he needed water to cool himself.

“PTA, after taking the Red substance started to behave strangely and told us he was going to find water to cool himself. About ten minutes later, all we heard was that he had jumped into an uncovered borehole at his house,” they disclosed.

Some neighbours who were present at the time of the incident, reportedly, climbed into the borehole in an attempt to rescue him, but all their efforts were unsuccessful.

The police at Nkawie were called to the scene, and later conveyed the body to the mortuary for preservation.

Meanwhile, the police has also launched investigation into the cause of death of the deceased.

Don’t smuggle kola or drugs to Saudi – Hajj Taskforce warns pilgrims

0

The National Hajj Taskforce has cautioned Ghanaian pilgrims against smuggling prohibited items—including drugs and kola nuts—during this year’s pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The warning aligns with strict legal guidelines issued by Saudi authorities governing the Hajj.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, May 16, the Chairman of the Taskforce, Collins Dauda, called on security agencies to remain vigilant in identifying any potential breaches of the law by pilgrims.

He also disclosed that a framework will be developed to sanction offenders.

“We indicated to our pilgrims the need to avoid sending along prohibited items like large quantities of kola, large quantities of tramadol, and large quantities of Gebedol to Saudi Arabia. Chewing of kola is not prohibited in Ghana,” he said.

Dauda clarified that the restrictions on certain items are based on the host country’s laws and not Ghana’s.

“The authorities in Saudi Arabia said we shouldn’t bring kola. Ghana has nothing to do with it. If you want to pray in Saudi Arabia, you must conform to their rules and respect their regulations. No pilgrim should put even one kola in his/her pockets,” he emphasized.

He further noted the reputational risks involved, stating: “It is a prohibited item; these prohibited items give Ghana a negative image when seen at the Airport. We don’t want anything to be seized in Saudi Arabia.”

Hamza Adam Defends Government’s Accountability Stance Amid NPP Criticism

0

Hamza AdamHamza Adam
Hamza Adam

Deputy Minister and Member of Parliament Hamza Adam has robustly defended the government’s commitment to accountability, dismissing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) calls for investigations as politically motivated.

Speaking to journalists, Adam emphasized that probity and accountability are central to the administration’s principles.

“We support efforts to expand accountability. That is the essence of good governance,” he stated. However, he criticized the NPP for selectively targeting issues while ignoring unresolved scandals from their own tenure, citing the Sky Train project and questionable IT contracts as examples.

Adam announced plans to file a formal petition regarding a $25 million contract awarded to a company linked to a former state agency CEO’s family, underscoring the government’s willingness to address such matters. He also rejected claims that National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi violated the Foreign Exchange Act, calling the petition against him a distraction from the NDC’s rising influence.

The deputy minister’s remarks highlight the ongoing tension between the government and opposition over transparency, with both sides accusing the other of hypocrisy.

‘If you don’t come back, you block opportunity for others’ — Gomashie to delegation headed for Poland

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has urged a team of young Ghanaian creatives to represent the country well as they embark on a cultural exchange tour in Poland.

Speaking during a courtesy call at the Ministry in Accra, the minister commended Thomas Fynn, Ghana’s Photographic Tourism Ambassador, for creating opportunities for young people in the creative sector, particularly in photography.

“Mr Fynn has always been committed to supporting the next generation. When he approached the ministry about this project, I saw it as a way to highlight photography, which doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

“I hope this opens more doors. Travel well, represent Ghana with pride, and return to share your experiences. If you don’t come back, you block the opportunity for others,” she said.

The team’s departure marks the launch of the Ghana-Poland Photographic Collaboration, a cultural initiative led by Polish photographer Mr. Wojciech Zaremba in partnership with Fynn.

The collaboration includes exhibitions and cultural engagements in Poland, with a focus on photography as a tool for storytelling and cultural exchange.

The delegation includes three young Ghanaian photographers: Mary Ama Odurowaa Sarkodie, Theophilus Seth Opoku, and Ernestina Fynn. Their participation reflects Ghana’s support for youth development and international collaboration in the arts.

The project is organised by The Kownketsia Foundation and FYNNexhibits Limited, with support from the Ministry.

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Mahama has announced that cleanliness will become a key performance standard for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

According to the President, whether MMDCEs remain in office or are removed will now largely depend on the state of sanitation in their respective jurisdictions.

Speaking during his Thank You Tour of the Greater Accra Region in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, President Mahama emphasized that maintaining clean communities will be a central performance indicator under his administration.

“Cleanliness will become one of the key performance indicators for measuring the performance of MMDCEs and will determine whether they remain in office or are removed,” he stated.

The President also expressed concern over the persistent flooding in the country, especially in Accra. He attributed the problem to poor drainage systems, unregulated development, and the worsening impacts of climate change. He described the situation as intolerable and called for urgent, coordinated action.

A specialized inter-agency task team, he noted, has already begun implementing a comprehensive flood mitigation plan. Measures include reengineering waterways, relocating buildings situated in watercourses, desilting major drains, and strictly enforcing building codes. The Odaw Basin and the Kaneshie-Mallam corridor are receiving focused attention.

President Mahama also voiced frustration over delays in critical flood prevention projects under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) initiative, which is supported by the World Bank.

He advised residents, particularly those living in flood-prone areas and near open drains, to exercise caution during the rainy season.

To strengthen sanitation management at the district level, the President announced that 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund’s revenue will henceforth be disbursed directly to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). This, he said, will provide them with increased resources to execute sanitation and development programs.

Additionally, he revealed that the Cabinet will soon meet to consider full decentralization of the sanitation budget, which will make each district fully accountable for maintaining cleanliness.

“Accra deserves a clean and resilient environment, and that is why we are integrating the Greater Accra Flood Master Control Plan into our national climate resilience strategy,” President Mahama concluded.

Chief of Staff, what’s happening ?

0

President John Dramani Mahama has asked the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, when he will be paid his salary so he can fulfil his pledge to donate six months of his salary into the Mahama Cares programme.

Mahama pledged to donate six months of his salary to the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund, commonly referred to Mahama Cares.

Mahama, while launching the Fund pleaded with the private sector to commit their corporate social responsibility to the Mahama Cares.

He, has, therefore urged corporate bodies to support the initiative.

He appealed to banks, mining companies and other businesses to allocate a portion of their annual corporate social responsibility budgets to the fund.

According to Mr Mahama, such contributions would directly benefit the very people on whom these institutions depend for their daily operations.

However, Mahama has revealed that he kept checking his account and he has yet to receive his salary, after working for four months.

He asked the Chief of Staff when his account would be credited with his salary so he could honour his promise.

… Unfortunately, I have been checking my bank account and I haven’t started receiving my salary yet. Chief of Staff, what’s happening? Mahama quizzed.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is aimed at providing care for Ghanaians affected by chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was one of the campaign promises of the National Democratic Congress during the 2024 elections.

It is intended to ease the cost of accessing specialist care for Ghanaians living with NCDs such as diabetes, cancer, kidney failure, stroke, and complications from hypertension.

Jinapor urges cost-cutting measures at COCOBOD amid financial challenges

0

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has voiced deep concern over the sharp decline in cocoa production and the rising debt burden within the sector.

Addressing the inauguration of an 11-member board of directors for COCOBOD, Jinapor highlighted that the sector’s debt has ballooned from GH₵400 million in 2017 to a staggering GH₵2.6 billion—a development he described as alarming and deserving of urgent attention.

“COCOBOD, just like the energy sector, has been in the news for some disturbing reasons. From a debt of 400 million in 2017, the debt is now projected at 2.6 billion, which is very worrying, and all of us ought to be very concerned about the state of COCOBOD,” he said.

He also lamented the drop in cocoa production, which, according to him, has declined from about one million metric tonnes in 2016/2017 to roughly 500,000 metric tonnes, and is continuing on a downward trajectory.

“Around 2016/2017, cocoa production hit around one million. Now it’s declined to around 500. That is quite worrying and is even going down further, just like oil production,” he noted.

Jinapor urged the new board to prioritise cost-cutting measures and operational efficiency, staying true to COCOBOD’s core mandate.

“A trim in costs, bringing about efficiency and deal particularly in what COCOBOD was established to do. That is to ensure that we increase cocoa production and add value to our cocoa,” he said.

He explained that the inclusion of key financial leaders, such as the Finance Minister and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, on the board is meant to enhance fiscal discipline.

“The presence of the finance minister and the Governor of BoG, Dr Johnson Asiama, is to check fiscal slippages, which can affect its monitoring side. So you ought to ensure that there is a high level of discipline,” he explained.

Expressing confidence in the newly constituted board, Jinapor said: “With the calibre of people on this board, I’m very confident that we will turn the sector around.”

The new COCOBOD board is chaired by Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Policy Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, and includes Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance.

OPIT ready to train a generation of African AI champions

0

The recent LinkedIn “Future of Work” Report (2025) reported that between 2020 and 2024, postings for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-related jobs grew by 38 per cent. This makes it one of the fastest-growing job sectors in the world today.

AI competencies are quickly becoming a key component in tech jobs, from Data Science, to Programming, from Cybersecurity to Cloud Computing. But they are not confined to that: tomorrow’s professionals will be required to possess and master strong applicative skills in AI to stand out in their current jobs, whether they are HR specialists, project managers, designers, consultants or analysts.

Considering the speed of growth in AI and AI-related technologies, it has become critical that developed societies are not left trailing in this revolution.

But developing economies, especially in Africa, are determined to plug the gap. In its Continental AI Strategy, the African Union (AU) proposes a people-centric, development-oriented and inclusive approach, with five focus areas. One of such focus areas, according to the strategy, is expressed as follows:

Accelerating AU Member States’ capabilities in infrastructure (energy, broadband, computing capabilities, data centers, cloud, IoT), AI talent and skills, datasets, innovation and research that underpin AI development.

This strategy requires a rapid expansion in the capacities of local training and educational institutions to prepare the right talent and support relevant research. While these capacities are still developing across the continent, the demand would not go away, as leading nations on the continent seek to harness AI to improve critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and climate change.

Since 2023, one European-accredited online institution that has made a move towards helping to plug this AI skills and knowledge gap, is OPIT (Open Institute of Technology). OPIT has welcomed students from Africa and all over the world, and offered them access to world-class training and qualifications in cutting-edge IT areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer science, Digital Business and Cybersecurity.

Aligned to its mission of making high-quality higher education accessible worldwide, OPIT offers its Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees to African students at an affordable cost, enabling students from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt, etc. to access quality international education from the comfort of their home countries.

This allows professionals to maintain their careers on the continent, while getting such career-defining education, training, and qualifications. Speaking from Milan, Riccardo Ocleppo, Entrepreneur and Founder of OPIT, emphasized the institution’s role in addressing Africa’s growing demand for specialized technology talent;

“From the beginning, our mission has been to offer a curriculum that meets the world’s most urgent demand in tech skills by focusing on their applications in the real world. With a faculty of 45 international professors, we offer affordable, high-quality education in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Digital Business and Cybersecurity. While our programs serve professionals across Europe, North America, and the world – OPIT students come from 78 countries – we’re especially proud to support fast-growing tech ecosystems in Africa.

“In 2025, we’re excited to welcome more students from leading innovation hubs such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, and Rwanda. The ability to study remotely while continuing meaningful work at home makes OPIT a powerful option for working professionals.”

OPIT has already proven its model can work for African IT professionals, with a fast-growing number of students from the continent currently studying in their programs.

In September 2024, for example, Nairobi-based Watson Ndethi enrolled in the Master of Science (MSc) in Responsible Artificial Intelligence program. Before enrolling at OPIT, Watson had spent more than a decade in a mix of specialist and senior IT engineering roles. When it was time to consider an international postgraduate education, he did not have to leave his home and work to realize this dream.

Speaking from Nairobi, Watson stated, ‘’OPIT’s blended model combines optional weekly live sessions with expertly curated asynchronous study materials, allowing you to fit a high-quality, accredited graduate program into your already demanding work schedule. This approach provides a valuable option for working professionals.’’

There are many professionals like Watson Ndethi across the continent, and OPIT has expanded its reach to accommodate their growing need to develop their skills. OPIT also continues to prove the success of its students. Last March, OPIT held its first-ever graduation for a batch of 40 graduates from six different continents who, in tune with growing demand, completed the flagship MSc in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program.

OPIT – Open Institute of Technology is a tech-focused, online higher education institution based in Malta, with a diverse student body spanning 78 countries. With 300 students currently enrolled, OPIT is redefining global learning by offering EU-accredited undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in computer science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science and digital business.

At the core of OPIT’s mission is its commitment to practical, hands-on education that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology with real-world application.

By bridging the gap between theory and practice, OPIT ensures that its graduates are both knowledgeable and industry-ready. OPIT’s student-first approach combines flexible online learning with interactive, collaborative experiences.

Students engage in live lessons, masterclasses, quizzes, exercises, and internally developed digital content, ensuring a dynamic and immersive educational journey. With 24/7 access to personalized tutoring support and high-quality resources, OPIT empowers students to advance their careers without geographical constraints.

GAF Commanders donate one-month salary to support Mahama Cares

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Service Commanders have presented their one-month basic salary in support of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.

The gesture is aimed at contributing to the national effort to provide medical relief to vulnerable citizens battling critical health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke, and other life-threatening ailments.

Speaking on behalf of the commanders during a courtesy call on Friday, May 16, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General William Agyapong highlighted the fund’s critical role in supporting the most medically vulnerable in society.

“We are intrigued, and it is heartwarming to know that persons with conditions such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke, among many others, will equally benefit from this fund. Your Excellency, that is why my military command and I have decided to contribute our one-month basic salary to the fund,” he said.

Receiving the donation, President John Dramani Mahama, who is spearheading the Mahama Cares initiative, expressed deep appreciation to the Armed Forces for what he described as a display of patriotism and compassion.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank our high command for this initiative. It shows that aside from your primary responsibility of protecting our territorial boundaries and wielding weapons, you have a heart and soul beating in your chest.

“You have love for the country and love for the people you are protecting. On behalf of the people of Ghana, I thank you for this,” Mahama said.

Autopsy wasn’t able to ascertain the cause of Mohbad’s death – Pathologist finally speaks

Nigerian musician, Mohbad Nigerian musician, Mohbad

Nigerian musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad on September 12, 2023, became the topic of discussion after his sudden demise.

He was hurriedly buried, and weeks later, he was exhumed for autopsy, due to issues surrounding his death.

A pathologist who spoke on the development at that time said the cause of death cannot be determined because, at the time they conducted the test, the body had decomposed.

Read the article originally published on GhanaWeb on May 16, 2024

The post-mortem examination of the remains of the renowned artiste, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, reportedly failed to determine his cause of death.

This revelation was made by Wahab Shittu, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria, during a press briefing at the coroner’s inquiry in Lagos State on Wednesday.

Shittu stated that the forensic expert responsible for the autopsy informed the coroner that significant decomposition had occurred by the time the examination was performed.

“According to him (pathologist), the cause of death cannot be determined because by the time they conducted the test, the body had decomposed, and they can’t determine the cause of death.

“So, in summary, he is saying the cause of death cannot be ascertained. When you say the cause of death cannot be ascertained, it means it is suspicious, it is not clear. No particular reason.”

Shittu further relayed that the pathologist mentioned the possibility of Mohbad’s death being linked to a reaction from certain medications administered before his passing.

“The pathologist could not confirm whether the medications were directly responsible for the death,” Shittu added.

The inquest has been postponed until June 11th for further questioning of the forensic expert.

Mohbad’s autopsy commenced eight months ago

The Lagos Police Command verified the exhumation of Mohbad’s body for post-mortem analysis on September 21, 2023, due to the suspicious nature of his passing.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos Police, announced this through his official communication channels.

Additionally, Hundeyin reported the detention of the nurse implicated in delivering the lethal injection to the late musician.

In the early stages of the probe, the police constituted a 19-member panel to carry out a thorough investigation, which included tasks like exhumation, autopsy, inspection of the scene, medical evaluations, and gathering statements from suspects and witnesses.

The panel was charged with concluding their detailed investigation within a fortnight.

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has responded to media reports concerning a legal suit filed against him by his fellow lawmaker, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

In a press release dated Friday, May 16, 2025, the New Patriotic Party lawmaker stated that although he is aware of the lawsuit, he has not yet been officially served with any court documents by the relevant authorities.

According to Rev Ntim Fordjour, who also serves as the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, while he awaits official service of the suit, he believes the case lacks merit and is without substance.

“Media reports of a suit supposedly filed by my colleague, honourable Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Mr Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has come to my attention. I have, however, not been served with any such suit. I, therefore, await the service of the supposed suit and will demonstrate that it is of no merit,” the statement read.

Background

Rev John Ntim Fordjour is the subject of a defamation lawsuit filed by the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who is seeking GH¢30 million in compensatory damages for statements he alleges are defamatory and injurious to his reputation.

The lawsuit and the reliefs being sought stem from allegations by Dafeamekpor that his colleague, Ntim Fordjour, falsely implied that he, in his capacity as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation, was involved in a bribery scandal concerning a payment of GH¢360,000 to the committee for the passage of a Legislative Instrument (LI).

The post, which was made on X, further alleged that the committee misappropriated GH¢49 million, prompting widespread calls for an investigation.

However, the NDC lawmaker, who also serves as the Chief Whip of the Majority in Parliament, has dismissed the allegations as baseless, malicious, and injurious to his reputation.

In his suit, he argues that the post made by Ntim Fordjour has led to a loss of public confidence in him.

He further emphasised the severity of the damage caused, citing emotional distress, economic harm, and professional disruption.

The lawmaker is seeking additional reliefs, requesting the court to declare that the statements made by Ntim Fordjour are defamatory, false, and malicious.

He is also asking for an apology, a retraction of the statements, and various forms of damages, including general, aggravated, and punitive damages.

Furthermore, he is demanding that the court impose both an interlocutory and a perpetual injunction to prevent Ntim Fordjour from making any further defamatory statements against him, the report stated.

Calls for CJ appeal rights are politically motivated – Martin Amidu fires at Sophia Akuffo

0

Martin Amidu has launched a scathing critique of retired Chief Justice and current Council of State member, Ms. Sophia Akuffo, over her recent remarks advocating a constitutional amendment to the process for removing a Chief Justice.

The former Attorney General and anti-corruption crusader argued that Sophia Akuffo’s calls—made at a Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) sitting hosted by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA)—must be understood within the context of current petitions before the President seeking the removal of the incumbent Chief Justice, and the decisions that have followed in consultation with the Council of State, of which she is an active member.
