We are not safe in Parliament – Bagbin

0

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed concerns over the security of lawmakers and Parliamentary Service members, citing increasing incidents of attacks by unidentified individuals within the parliamentary enclave.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament, Bagbin urged the Majority Leader to prioritize efforts to enhance security measures within the precincts of the House.

The Speaker revealed that intruders had previously entered Parliament’s premises and attacked members and staff, often escaping by scaling the perimeter wall into the surrounding forest.

He emphasised that strengthening security within the parliamentary precinct is essential for the smooth functioning of the legislature.

“One of the challenges that need to be addressed is to secure the parliamentary enclave to ensure the safety of members and staff. This has been a worrying matter for parliament for some time now, we are actually insecure here.

“We are not safe. Sometimes people can come in and attack us or staff and anytime there is an attempt to apprehend them, they scale over the wall and escape into the forest. This is vital for the functioning of parliament. I believe the ninth board will work assiduously to make this a reality.

“I will call on the leaders of the house to follow up on this matter,” he stated.

‘I’m a doctor – add these five foods to your diet if you want long, thick hair’

0

A doctor has shared five common foods he recommends people eat for “long, thick hair”.

Keeping our hair in tip top condition is a common desire among many people. Naturally, we all want strong, healthy locks that look and feel their best.

Having good hair can be a major boost to one’s self-confidence – who doesn’t feel better when sporting a glossy mane? When hair starts shedding excessively, or looking thinner or more limp, it can be the cause of great stress.

Experiencing hair loss can be anxiety inducing and incredibly upsetting, regardless of whether it’s a temporary or permanent loss. The unwanted occurrence can be caused by a range of factors.

According to the NHS, some hair loss is perfectly normal and “we can lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, often without noticing”. Typically, this isn’t anything to be overly concerned about, but in some instances, losing hair can be a sign of a medical issue so it’s important to seek professional medical advice and guidance.

Other temporary hair loss can be caused by many factors, such as an illness, stress, iron deficiency, weight loss, or side effects from cancer treatment. On the quest for expert advice and insight, many turn to social media.

Thankfully, there’s a hoard of professionals and titans of industry all too keen to share their guidance with the masses online. Some have gone on to amass armies of followers, grateful for their help.

One such pro is Dr Joe Whittington, a board-certified emergency physician. In a popular TikTok video, the doctor shared a range of foods which could help improve the health, look and condition of your hair.

Five foods the doctor recommends eating for better hair

Speaking directly to the camera, Dr Joe said: “Long, thick hair. If that’s what you want, here’s five foods you need to incorporate into your diet today:

  1. Eggs – They are a great source of protein, biotin and vitamin B12, all which are essential for hair growth.
  2. Salmon – This is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids. It helps to strengthen hair and promote hair growth.
  3. Spinach – It’s rich in vitamins A and C, both of which are important to produce sebum which keeps your hair moisturised.
  4. Nuts – These are high in protein, vitamin E and zinc, all which are important for hair growth. Vitamin E also improves blood circulation to your scalp.
  5. Sweet potato – A good source of Vitamin C and also contains beta carotene which is converted to vitamin A in your body.”

Hundreds of people were keen to share their thoughts in the comments section beneath the doctor’s video. One person said: “omg I’m 46 and you just gave me a huge smile. I eat 4 of those 5 every day!! And just realized my hair is think and grows fast!!!!!”

Another agreed: “Yes! All this and rosemary hair treatments!” while a third added: “Genetics helps a huge part” to which Dr Joe replied with a simple: “Yes!”

If you’re concerned about your hair, it’s best to visit your GP for a personalised consultation and to discuss possible treatment plans.

A/R GBA President warns against seeking justice on social media

0

The President of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association, Kwame Owusu Sekyere, has urged the public to refrain from using social media as a platform for seeking justice.

He emphasized that legal disputes should be resolved through the courts or Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

Speaking at the launch of Commercial ADR Week on March 17, 2025, at the Court of Appeal Complex in Kumasi, under the theme “Building the Pillars of Justice Delivery through Commercial Justice ADR,” he cautioned that relying on social media for legal redress is unconstitutional and undermines the judicial process.

He further encouraged Ghanaians to embrace the new court-connected ADR system for adjudicating disputes when they arise.

“…Thankfully, the judiciary has gone through a process where we now have ADR as part of the justice delivery system, and our commercial court is there for us. So the issue where people take their matters to the media for adjudication does not work and is unconstitutional. My Lords, we beseech that these issues need to be resolved.

“Thankfully for us, the process for ADR goes through the judicial system, where if you have an issue or are dissatisfied, you have the right to appeal something that does not exist when the media decides, which they do not make any determination.

“On this note, we invite the public and the people of Ghana to accept the court-connected ADR for adjudication in their disputes when they arise,” he noted.

Majority and Minority leaders clash over new Parliamentary Chamber and Hospital

0

A heated debate has erupted between Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over whether Ghana’s Parliament should prioritise the construction of a new parliamentary chamber and a dedicated hospital for MPs.

The issue, which has sparked sharp disagreements within the 9th Parliamentary Service Board, comes as the House considers key welfare and infrastructure matters affecting its members and staff.

The proposal for a Parliament-exclusive hospital was met with strong opposition from Mahama Ayariga, who dismissed it as unnecessary. He argued that Parliament already has access to top-tier healthcare facilities, including Ridge Hospital and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, making a separate hospital for MPs redundant.

“I don’t believe a hospital should be the priority of this Parliament,” Ayariga stated, rejecting Afenyo-Markin’s call for the facility. He insisted that resources should be allocated to more pressing national and parliamentary needs, rather than a project that wo

Afenyo-Markin, however, strongly advocated for discussions on constructing a new parliamentary chamber, citing security concerns and space constraints in the current facility. He warned that MPs face serious security risks due to the lack of proper protective infrastructure.

“Here in the public gallery, anybody at all can throw a thing at an MP,” he stressed, highlighting the potential dangers lawmakers face while sitting in the current chamber.

Afenyo-Markin insisted that Parliament must invest in a chamber that reflects its stature and ensures the safety and well-being of MPs.

“We can begin the conversation for a new chamber befitting Parliament. Be assured that we are committed in this direction. MPs have many concerns about their welfare, and I’m sure we’d put in necessary steps to ensure that,” he stated.

However, Mahama Ayariga dismissed the proposal, arguing that the current chamber is “fit for purpose” and that security concerns alone should not justify building a completely new facility.

“I disagree we should construct a new chamber for Parliament,” he said, maintaining that Parliament can continue to function effectively in its existing space.

While the two leaders remain divided on how to address infrastructure needs, they both acknowledged that Parliament’s security must be improved.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who chairs the Parliamentary Service Board, echoed these concerns, stating that securing the Parliamentary enclave should be a top priority.

“We are insecure here; we are not safe. One of the responsibilities of the Board is to secure the Parliamentary enclave,” Bagbin cautioned.

He also urged Parliament’s leadership and staff to approach their duties with integrity, dedication, and patriotism, ensuring that governance remains efficient and productive.

Kotoko’s circle in China Chairman Eduku promised pre-season in China if the club win 2024/25 GPL

The China Circles 0086 Chairman of Asante Kotoko, Mr Thomas Kojo Eduku, has expressed his desire for the club to hold their pre-season preparations in China should they emerge as Ghana Premier League champions this season.

Eduku stated that the China Circles will lease with the Interim Management Committee (IMC) to make arrangements for a fully funded pre-season in China for the start of the next season.

“We want Kotoko to have pre-season in Ghana if they win the league. We will talk with the management and come up with how we will get the team to do their pre-season here in China.” He told Dokk TV.

This statement comes at a time when Asante Kotoko are battling for the Premier League title, with hopes of reclaiming their dominance in Ghanaian football. Traditionally,

Kotoko has had pre-season training in various locations, including Dubai, but Eduku’s vision suggests a potential shift in their preparation strategy.

Currently, discussions are yet to take place between the China Circles leadership and Kotoko’s management.

Asante Kotoko lead the table with 38 points with quite a few matches left. They failed to extend their lead at the top following a one-all draw against Samartex on matchday 24.

GH¢20,000 Gift Saga: Afua Asantewaa and husband must be questioned

0

Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega

Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has called for a thorough explanation regarding the GH¢20,000 gift presented to Guinness World Record contender, Afua Asantewaa, during her sing-a-thon attempt.

In a discussion on United Showbiz shared on March 16, 2025, Nana Frimpong Ziega emphasised that her statement that claimed that the only gift she received from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was a sore throat medicine was disrespectful and tarnished the image of the former vice president.

He referred to Afua Asantewaa as an ungrateful person.

“Everything that was facilitated after her attempt was done by Dr. Bawumia… She should have even mentioned her trip to Royal Senchi to Nana Romeo during her interview. To limit all the good things Bawumia did for her to only a sore throat medicine was disrespectful and a disgrace to him,” he said.

Nana Frimpong Ziega also called for Afua Asantewaa’s husband and father to give a full account of who received the money and the other gifts presented to them during the sing-a-thon.

“Can she tell us that her husband didn’t inform her that the former vice president gave them something? I think we need to call her husband and question him. The reason why sometimes the youth find it difficult to get help from prominent people in the country is because of actions like this. Look at the mileage she got from the vice president yet, see how she has tarnished his image,” he added.

Background

Afua Asantewaa, in an earlier interview with Nana Romeo, claimed that during her first sing-a-thon attempt, the only assistance she received from the previous government was medication to cure her sore throat. She stated that, contrary to claims of receiving cash donations and items from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, she had not received anything of the sort.

This led to a response from Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who disputed Afua Asantewaa’s claim in a Facebook post. Salam Mustapha stated that he personally handed over GH¢20,000 to Afua’s husband and father on behalf of the former Vice President.

Old video of Dampare sharing what his fears are after leaving office resurfaces

0

Former IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare Former IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare

In August 2024, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, the immediate past Inspector General of Police, opened up about one of his key concerns during his tenure.

He stated that upon leaving office, there might not be a capable and qualified individual to succeed him in the role he once held.

He said, “When it comes to life and the job that I do, my biggest fear is walking out of the position that I find myself in today and not getting someone who is better than me to continue.

“My colleagues will tell you, and I’m saying that for a divine reason, I keep telling God all the time that if all I’m doing with my colleagues as a team is that you cannot get somebody who is better than us to come and continue by maintaining what we have achieved and building upon it, then why are you allowing us to do it because somebody who is not better than us will come and destroy it anyway? So, that is my biggest fear,” he said.

He added that “So, pray for us so that it doesn’t become that when we are no more, we are used as a reference to judge the people who come after us. We would rather have come to do our work as God has destined, and the next person will do their work. But we want them to be better so that they will build upon what we left behind so that it will be unto the benefit of everybody and to the glory of God.”

Fast forward to March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama relieved Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of his duties as Inspector General of Police, appointing Christian Tetteh Yohuno as his successor.

Following this decision, videos of Dampare’s earlier remarks have resurfaced, sparking discussions.

Many are questioning whether his concerns about leadership succession will materialise under the new IGP.

Interest rate of 17% with inflation at 23% artificially low – Dr. John Kwakye

0

Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye, has noted that the interest rates on the treasury bills market must tally with other money market rates.

He emphasised that with an inflation rate of 23%, a 17% interest rate on treasury bills is artificially low.

According to him, if steps are not taken, investors may be forced to consider other options.

Reacting to the latest treasury bill auction results released by the Central Bank, he wrote on his X page on March 16, 2025: “T-Bill yield of 17% as reported when inflation is 23%, seems artificially low. It is important that T-Bill rates are aligned with other money market rates to avoid potential flight to dollars.”

The investor demand for Ghana’s short-term government securities has remained resilient in the latest treasury bill auction on March 14, 2025, with bids totalling GH¢9.26 billion.

It has exceeded the government’s GH¢8.26 billion target by 10.7%.

Despite the oversubscription, yields have continued to decline across all maturities.

The government accepted GH¢8.77 billion in bids, surpassing its target by GH¢512 million while rejecting GH¢490 million worth of offers.

The 91-day bill saw the strongest demand, attracting bids of GH¢6.22 billion, all of which were accepted.

The 182-day and 364-day bills recorded bids of GH¢1.83 billion and GH¢1.20 billion, with accepted amounts of GH¢1.80 billion and GH¢746 million, respectively.

Yields on the 91-day and 182-day instruments fell to 15.86% and 16.92%, down 185 and 204 basis points from the previous auction.

The 364-day bill also declined, settling at 18.96%, a 102-basis-point drop.

OSP is threatening Ofori-Atta – Haruna Mohammed

0

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has accused the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) of unfairly targeting former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

This comes amid heightened tensions between the OSP and Ofori-Atta, with the Special Prosecutor warning that the former minister would be re-listed as a wanted person if he fails to appear for questioning on June 2, 2025.

Mr Mohammed argued that the approach being taken by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng appears more like intimidation than due process.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, March 17, Mr Mr Mohammed said Ofori-Atta has not refused to appear before the OSP but has chosen to let his legal team handle some of the corruption allegations on his behalf.

“Ken Ofori-Atta can appear before the Special Prosecutor, and his lawyers can speak on his behalf without him even opening his mouth. Is that right or wrong? He has said that some of the corruption allegations raised can be properly addressed by his lawyers. If those matters are not satisfactorily dealt with, he will definitely appear on the agreed date and respond to the issues,” Mr Mohammed stated.

He further criticised the OSP for treating the case as though a judgment had already been passed, emphasising that the allegations remain unproven and that it is the responsibility of the OSP to establish credible evidence.

“The OSP is handling this case as if a judgment has already been made. These are just allegations, and it is their duty to provide evidence against the individual. We expect the OSP to show some level of respect and professionalism in dealing with senior officials of this country,” he added.

Addressing concerns about equality before the law, Mr Mohammed clarified that his argument was not about shielding Ofori-Atta from legal scrutiny but rather about ensuring fairness in the process.

“I am not saying that anyone is above the law, but there should be a level of decorum in handling such matters. Going to court is not illegal; it is the right of every citizen. Ofori-Atta never said he would not appear on the defined date.

“So why is the OSP making public announcements and issuing threats? It appears as though they are trying to pressure him into withdrawing his court case, which should not be the case,” he stated.

He urged the OSP to allow all citizens, including Ken Ofori-Atta, to enjoy the legal rights enshrined in the 1992 Constitution, without what he perceives as undue pressure or intimidation.

Afenyo-Markin calls for dedicated Hospital for MPs

0

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for a dedicated hospital for Members of Parliament (MPs) to address health concerns while ensuring health confidentiality.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament on Monday, March 17, 2025, the Effutu MP highlighted the unique challenges faced by parliamentarians in accessing private healthcare.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the establishment of a parliamentary hospital would be a significant step toward safeguarding the health and privacy of lawmakers.

He noted that the political class often faces heightened scrutiny, making it difficult to seek medical care without compromising confidentiality.

“Mr Speaker, there are two things that I hope for in this ninth parliament. One is a hospital for parliament. If it does happen, according to your vision, it will be a great milestone. We are a political class and our health issues must be known within certain confines. Because of confidentially issues people travel abroad at great cost for medical support. I believe if we are able to deal with this, it will help,” he stated.

Additionally, the minority leader, proposed the establishment of a new Parliamentary chamber to enhance the security of Members of Parliament.

He emphasised the need for a new infrastructure that reflects the importance of the legislative arm of government.

Ghana Water Limited inaugurates new audit committee to deepen financial oversight

0

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has inaugurated a new Audit Committee, in line with the Public Financial Management (PFM) Act, 2016 (Act 921), to strengthen internal control systems, ensure compliance, and enhance financial oversight within the institution.

The five-member committee is chaired by Hon. Gladys Gillian Naadu Tetteh, a seasoned governance and public financial management expert.

The committee, among others, will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of internal and external audit recommendations, monitoring financial reporting processes, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and policies, and advising management on risk.

It serves as an advisory body, supporting management to establish robust internal control systems and identify early warning signals that could affect operational efficiency or financial integrity.

Adam Mutawakilu, the Managing Director of GWL, speaking at the inauguration, emphasized on the importance of the committee’s role in promoting transparency, accountability.

He reiterated President John Mahama’s call for public servants to embrace accountability and lead by example, stressing on the importance of responsible leadership, transparency and public trust in governance.

Mutawakilu further underscored that the inauguration of the Audit Committee reflects the broader national commitment to promoting transparency, integrity, and good governance in the public sector as championed by President Mahama.

The president, he stated, had announced plans to introduce a Code of Conduct for individuals in positions of trust as part of efforts to reinforce ethical leadership and responsible stewardship of public resources.

“The president’s renewed emphasis on transparency and accountability sets a clear tone for all public institutions and at Ghana Water Ltd, we are committed to aligning with this national vision by strengthening our internal control systems, enhancing financial oversight, and ensuring that our operations meet the highest standards of integrity,” he said.

He noted that the Audit Committee would serve as a critical mechanism in ensuring compliance with public financial management regulations and supporting the company to operate with openness and accountability.

“This is how we build public trust – by demonstrating that we are not only committed to delivering quality services, but also to managing public resources responsibly and transparently,” he added.

The MD said the inauguration of the Audit Committee is not just a statutory requirement under the PFM Act, but a strategic step in positioning Ghana Water Ltd to meet the highest standards of financial governance and internal control.

He noted that the committee is expected to collaborate closely with management and internal audit units to strengthen the risk management framework and implement audit recommendations from internal and external sources.

“Our goal is to ensure that GWL continues to operate with integrity and transparency in the discharge of its core mandate of delivering potable water to the Ghanaian public. We must be proactive in our governance processes, and this committee will play a crucial role in this direction,” he added.

Adam Mutawakilu stressed that the committee’s advisory and oversight roles were integral to improving organizational efficiency and reducing irregularities, adding that GWL remained committed to promoting a culture of accountability.

Dr. Eric Oduro Osae, Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), who administered the official induction, emphasized the committee’s dual role of oversight and advisory and charged members to proactively support management in implementing audit recommendations and to regularly review systems before external audits were conducted.

“You are not whistleblowers but support structures to guide management to prevent issues before they arise. Internal audit must provide early warning signals and not wait for external auditors to expose weaknesses in the system,” he stated.

Dr Osae highlighted that under the PFM Act, the Audit Committee is required to submit an annual status of implementation report to the President, a copy of which also goes to Parliament, the Auditor-General, and the Internal Audit Agency.

He, therefore, urged the committee to take ownership of this responsibility and ensure that the 2024 Audit Committee Report, due in June, is submitted on time.

He further indicated that the Government is rolling out new policy directives for State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), including the revision of 2025 risk-based audit work plans by April 30, 2025, and tasked the GWL Audit Committee to align their work with these new expectations.

“Your performance will be assessed based on the quality of your reports and your contribution to strengthening the systems. If done well, your names will be written in gold in the history of this organization,” the Director-General said.

Dr. Osae also urged the committee to actively participate in entrance and exit meetings with external auditors, noting that such engagements offer valuable opportunities to identify gaps and rectify them before final audit reports are issued.

He explained that their roles extend beyond compliance, with a responsibility to support the institution in building strong internal control mechanisms and sound financial systems.

Gladys Gillian Naadu Tetteh, in her inaugural remarks as Chairperson, pledged the committee’s readiness to work collaboratively with management and other stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the organization.

“We are going to work together to continue to uphold the integrity of this organization. We will ensure enhanced financial oversight and compliance levels at Ghana Water Ltd,” she said.

Tetteh, who also chairs audit committees of other state institutions such as the Ghana Prisons Service, commended GWL for maintaining a clean financial record without major infractions.

She emphasised the importance of building on the achievements of the previous committee, led by Charles Adiyiah Kusi, to further enhance the company’s internal systems.

“I have not heard much of financial malfeasance associated with Ghana Water Limited as compared to other public institutions. This is a credit to the outgoing Audit Committee and the management team, and we intend to sustain and build on that legacy,” she remarked.

She called for collaborative engagement between the committee, management, and internal auditors to safeguard the financial health of GWL and ensure prudent use of public resources.

Kofi Adomah has all the right to sue Dormaahene

0

Media personality Afia Pokuaa Media personality Afia Pokuaa

Media personality Afia Pokuaa has stated that her colleague, Kofi Adomah Nwanwani, has the right to sue the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II, over the recent shooting incident that has caused him severe eye injuries.

In a video making rounds online on March 17, 2025, Afia Pokuaa insisted that it was the Dormaahene’s duty to protect the journalist from harm.

She explained that Kofi Adomah was an invited guest at the festival in Dormaa, and as the Dormaahene failed to ensure his safety, Kofi has every right to take legal action.

“Kofi and his entire family can sue the Dormaahene. It was his duty to protect him because Kofi was an invitee, and the Dormaa chiefs were the ones who invited him. One interesting thing about the whole issue is that most of the Dormaa chiefs are judges, so they know the law,” Afia Pokuaa said.

She further emphasised that the only way the Dormaahene and his chiefs could avoid responsibility would be if Kofi Adomah had attended the event without their permission.

“Assuming they told Kofi Adomah to position at a particular place and he decided to disobey them, then the law wouldn’t hold them responsible because Kofi disobeyed their order. But so far as he was told to capture that particular video, which led to the incident, his family has all the right to sue the Dormaahene and his chiefs,” she added.

What led to Kofi Adomah’s current situation?

A few months ago, Kofi Adomah Nwanwanii, along with his team from Angel FM/TV, Kofi TV, and MagrahebTV, travelled to Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region of Ghana to cover the Dormaa Kwafie festival and the 25th anniversary of the enstoolment of Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II.

While covering the event, Kofi was shot in the face by one of the gunmen wielding a musket, causing severe damage to his eyes and necessitating a series of surgeries on both eyes.

A GoFundMe account has also been created to solicit funds for another upcoming surgery.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested one person in connection with the death of investigative journalist, Ahmed Suale.

The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, who has been identified as a friend of Suale, released some photos of the deceased to a popular politician in Ghana before he was murdered, according to a report by myjoyonline.com.

He was arrested at Amasaman-Adease at a salon.

Restructure VAT properly to push Ghana’s Tax-to-GDP beyond 20%

0

President of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng President of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is urging the government to properly restructure the Value Added Tax (VAT) system, emphasising its potential as a significant revenue source.

According to the President of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng, a well-restructured VAT system could play a major role in increasing Ghana’s Tax-to-GDP ratio beyond 20 percent.

Ghana’s current tax-to-GDP ratio lags behind many middle-income economies. However, experts believe that with the right structural adjustments, the country can surpass the 20 percent mark.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business on the sidelines of the 2025 Deloitte Economic Dialogue on the 2025 budget on March 17, 2025, Dr. Obeng stressed that a simplified VAT system would greatly benefit the business community.

“For the VAT reforms, we are waiting for them. We have a lot to say. If you are able to restructure the VAT, it is a goldmine for the government. Our problem has been the structure. If you make it more affordable and simplified, the government will be able to do its work, and our tax-to-GDP ratio can go beyond 20 percent,” he stated.

Dr. Obeng also commended the government for the 3 percent increase in the Growth and Sustainability Levy on mining companies.

He emphasised the need for the government to focus on the extractive sector, highlighting its role as a crucial revenue hub for the country.

The 2025 Deloitte Economic Dialogue brought together industry experts to analyze the implications of Ghana’s 2025 Budget and explore effective strategies for navigating the country’s evolving economic landscape.

The dialogue focused on key fiscal policies, tax reforms, and economic growth prospects, providing businesses and policymakers with insights to adapt to emerging challenges and opportunities.

FC Skopje star Andrej Lazarov tragically died while trying to save others during a fire outbreak at a nightclub.

The fire, which started at dawn on Sunday, claimed the lives of at least 59 people and left more than 155 injured after breaking out at the Pulse Club in Kocani, North Macedonia.

Reports indicate that a local hip-hop group was performing for the 1,500 partygoers at the time. Lazarov, who joined the club in September, is believed to have suffered from smoke poisoning while desperately attempting to help save others.

In a harrowing statement, Macedonian second-tier side FC Skopje said: “Although we previously had information from his family that he was fine, with deep pain and great sadness, we announce that our footballer, Andrej Lazarov, has been confirmed among the victims of the tragic fire that occurred overnight in Kocani.

Foreign aid is not charity – Vice President Opoku-Agyemang challenges global perception

0

The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has criticised the long-standing perception of foreign aid to Africa as a one-sided act of charity, arguing that wealth flows out of the continent far more than it receives.

Speaking at a meeting with students from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at Jubilee House on March 17, 2025, she responded to a question about foreign aid and recent remarks by America’s President Donald Trump on cutting assistance to Africa.

“You see, one of the questions he hasn’t asked himself is how much leaves our continent for his (Donald Trump’s) country. They think it’s just charity. It is not,” she said.

“If even a fraction of what is taken from our continent remained, we wouldn’t have issues with unemployment, sanitation, or many other challenges.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang warned that Africa would not continue to accept economic imbalances. “At the right time, we’ll also take action. And it will not be funny,” she stated.

She referenced Niger’s recent decision to renegotiate its mineral contracts, which saw its national revenue rise from $1 billion to over $10 billion in a year.

The discussion, which brought together students from Harvard Kennedy School and MIT’s urban planning programme, covered a range of issues, including women’s empowerment, climate action, and regional integration in Africa.

On climate justice, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pointed out the unfair burden placed on African nations despite their minimal contributions to global emissions. “We are responsible for less than 5% [of emissions], yet we are expected to bear the consequences,” she noted.

The Vice President encouraged the students to amplify African perspectives in global conversations. “We need everybody’s voice. You are from Harvard Kennedy School and MIT, we need your voices too,” she urged.

Afenyo-Markin proposes new Parliamentary Chamber over security concerns

0

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has proposed the establishment of a new Parliamentary chamber to enhance the security of Members of Parliament (MPs).

The proposal was made during the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament on Monday, March 17.

Afenyo-Markin emphasised the need for new infrastructure that reflects the importance of the legislative arm of government.

“Indeed, when I visited the British Parliament, even within the chamber, there is enhanced security. Here in the public gallery, anybody at all can throw anything at an MP, and there is no security.

“Mr Speaker, I am therefore looking forward to an enhanced security regime, and I am pleased to depart from this infrastructure. We can begin a conversation for a new chamber befitting the legislative arm of government.”

However, Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, rejected the proposal by the Minority Leader, citing the current financial crisis of the state as the reason.

We are not safe in Parliament

The General Overseer of the Believers Worship Centre, Prophet Adom Kyei-Duah, has publicly condemned the actions of some of his branch pastors, accusing them of embezzling church funds.

In a video making rounds on social media, Prophet Adom Kyei-Duah expressed discontent over the misconduct.

“Some brothers have allocated some percentages for themselves. Look at the expenditure when it comes to television. Look at the number of radio FM stations that we have,” he stated.

He lamented about these issues while pointing out the sacrifices he has made for the church.

“I stand on my feet for four hours on Sundays. Look at the money I even deposit or give, even when I am dancing and singing. Look at the money that you shower on me. On Sunday, I gave two envelopes full of money.

“A brother at the branch allotted 30% of the proceedings for himself. When the Thanksgiving offering comes, he takes another money out of it for himself and then pays the rest,” he disclosed.

Prophet Kyei-Duah warned those involved, stating that branches found guilty of embezzling funds would face serious repercussions.

“For every organiser brother whose branch is found to have engaged in any form of embezzlement, the offering or sacrifice that I need to give this year, your branch shall not earn anything from it,” he declared.

Don’t run from the law

A legal expert, Andrew Appiah Danquah A legal expert, Andrew Appiah Danquah

A legal expert, Andrew Appiah Danquah, has advised the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to fully surrender himself to investigations surrounding the allegations levelled against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

He explained the need for accountability in public service, urging Ofori-Atta not to give the impression that he is evading the law.

In a video shared on X by TV3 on March 17, 2025, he said, “I have a simple advice for Ken Ofori-Atta.For somebody who has had the privilege of having served Ghana at the very top position, not at the highest level, who took an oath to protect and defend the laws of this country, he should subjugate himself to due process.

“He shouldn’t be giving the impression that he’s running away from the law because, in my view, that’s the impression he’s giving,” he added.

According to Appiah Dankwah, Ofori-Atta informed the OSP that he was uncertain on when he will be back to Ghana.

He, however, questioned Ofori- Atta’s expectation from the OSP, saying “What do you expect the OSP to do?”

Appiah Dankwa, therefore, urged the OSP to continue with the investigations within the confines of the constitution to remind officials of accountability, adding that Ofori-Atta remains innocent until proven guilty.

“I’ll encourage the OSP that he should, in the spirit of playing his role of creating the right political culture that will hold political leadership accountable, do all in his power to investigate Ken within the confines of the principles and values of our constitution and those principal values were exposed by my brother and I agree. He’s innocent until proven guilty,” he noted.

Danquah also explained that no one has said that Ken is guilty but rather Ghanaians demand thorough probe into the allegations leveled against him.

“Nobody has said that Ken is guilty, all we are saying is that we want to investigate potential criminal deeds potentially committed by him and he shouldn’t give the impression that he is running away from that process,” he added.

He urged the OSP to carefully pursue the case, arguing that it will set an example for political accountability in Ghana.

“The OSP should pursue this, like I said, in a collective bid to create that right culture that will send a signal to all politicians that when granted the privilege to serve our country, understand we will hold you accountable,” he stated.

An Imminent shortage of Diesel and RON 95 at some pumps in the Bono and Bono East Region has been detected by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies.

This was detected through its unannounced mystery shopping exercise, which is conducted periodically in retail outlets across the country.

The visit seeks to evaluate operational efficiency, compliance with company and overall quality standards.

A visit to the Bono and Bono East Regions reveals diesel and RON 95 shortages in some retail outlets.

According to the chamber, stock deficiency disrupts service delivery and may negatively impact customer trust and station reputation.

They are, therefore, calling on the National Petroleum Authority to swiftly address concerns to enhance service delivery.

Here are full details of their report

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) conducted an unannounced mystery shopping exercise across retail outlets in the Bono and Bono East Regions. The purpose of this mystery shopping was to evaluate operational efficiency, compliance with company standards, and overall customer service quality.

The exercise revealed several areas of concern that require urgent attention to maintain operational integrity and customer satisfaction. This report outlines the key findings and provides recommendations for improvement.

Key Findings

ATG Issues:

The exercise identified multiple issues with the Automatic Tank Gauging system (ATG) at various retail outlets. Inconsistent readings and potential calibration errors were observed, which could compromise inventory tracking and operational efficiency. Immediate technical assessments and repairs are recommended to address these discrepancies.

Shortage of Diesel and RON 95:

A notable shortage of diesel and RON 95 was observed at several retail outlets. This stock deficiency disrupts service delivery and may negatively impact customer trust and station reputation. A robust supply chain optimization strategy should be explored to prevent future shortages.

Non-Display of RON Stickers by Some Retail Outlets:

During the exercise, it was noted that some retail outlets failed to display their RON stickers as required. RON stickers indicate the kind of product the retail outlet sells, as some vehicles have specific fuel specifications. RON stickers should be affixed to dispensers to help customers easily identification and choose the type of fuel they wish to purchase.

Need for Safety Awareness Training

The exercise highlighted a lack of adequate safety awareness among staff at multiple retail outlets. Instances of unsafe practices were observed, posing risks to employees and customers alike. We recommend the implementation of mandatory safety awareness training to reinforce protocols and enhance workplace safety.

Sample Check of Pump Verifications and 10-litre can sampling

Sample checks were conducted on fuel pump verifications with 10-litre cans to assess dispensing accuracy. While some pumps performed within acceptable limits, others exhibited minor deviations that could undermine customer confidence and regulatory compliance. In some cases, pumps were shown to be over-delivering, which could affect sales of retail outlets. A comprehensive review and recalibration of affected pumps at various retail outlets in the Bono and Bono East regions are necessary to ensure uniformity, reliability and compliance.

Conclusion

The mystery shopping exercise conducted by the COMAC team has highlighted critical operational and compliance issues at filling stations in the Bono and Bono East regions. Addressing these concerns promptly will enhance service delivery, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain customer satisfaction. COMAC remains available to support the implementation of these recommendations and further assist in improving station performance.

Stonebwoy did not influence ”Up and Running” tour ticket prices – BMG PRO debunks allegation

0

The Head of Public Relations for Burniton Music Group (BMG), Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng, has strongly refuted claims that ticket prices for Stonebwoy’s “Up and Running” tour in London were deliberately reduced to fill the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

In what is being hailed as a historic moment for Ghanaian music, Stonebwoy, the celebrated Reggae and Dancehall artiste, successfully sold out the O2 Sheperd’s Bush Empire, shattering the long-held belief that no Ghanaian musician could accomplish such a feat without support from the core UK based Ghanaian promoters.
