South Africa’s top lender sets sights on Ghana as Africa’s wealth market grows

0

A subsidiary of FirstRand Ltd., South Africa’s largest bank by market capitalization, is setting its sights on Ghana as part of a broader strategy to tap into Africa’s growing affluent population.

First National Bank plans to roll out private banking services tailored to Ghana’s high-earning salaried professionals and self-employed individuals.

Alongside this, the bank is also expanding its private banking footprint in Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, and Zambia, to meet the evolving needs of its wealthy clientele.

Africa’s rising economic momentum and increasing industrialization have created fertile ground for wealth generation. As a result, global luxury brands and hospitality giants, from LVMH’s Louis Vuitton to Marriott International, are investing in the region, banking on the continent’s expanding middle class and growing number of millionaires.

According to Eric Enslin, the chief executive of FNB’s private banking and advisory unit, there is an untapped opportunity to target high-net-worth individuals.

Citing a report by Henley & Partners, Enslin noted that, excluding South Africa, the continent’s most developed economy, First National Bank already operates in five of Africa’s top 20 wealth markets, positioning it well to capture a larger share of the region’s growing affluence.

The Johannesburg-based lender’s renewed focus on Africa’s wealthy follows a strategic overhaul of its private banking operations in South Africa about four years ago.

That revamp expanded its offerings to include comprehensive advisory services and tailored solutions for high-net-worth families.

As part of the shift, the bank upskilled and re-certified several of its private bankers as financial planners, enhancing its ability to serve approximately 1.63 million South African clients earning over 750,000 rand ($38,626) annually.

While Ghana is next in line for expansion, he noted that timelines for the rollout have not yet been fully defined. The move into private banking in Ghana will build on First National Bank’s existing retail banking operations in the country.

Police arrest suspect in nationwide vehicle rental fraud syndicate

0

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man identified as Nana Anderson, also known by multiple aliases, including Anderson Nana Abeka, Essel Kofi Elvis, and Willson Kojo Bismark in connection with a nationwide car theft and rental fraud syndicate.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 11, the police confirmed that the suspect was apprehended on April 5, 2025, at a hideout in Atasemanso, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

His arrest followed ongoing investigations into a string of vehicle theft cases that spanned several parts of the country.

According to the police, the investigation revealed that on March 25, 2025, the suspect contacted a car rental partner of a complainant and fraudulently rented a Hyundai Elantra with registration number GT 114-25.

He allegedly used forged ECOWAS identity and driver’s license cards bearing different names but featuring his photograph to deceive the rental partner into releasing the vehicle at Community 25 in Accra.

After acquiring the vehicle, Anderson reportedly failed to return it and proceeded to disable its tracking system, raising alarms and prompting an investigation.

Further inquiries uncovered that Anderson is part of a wider syndicate that, between January and March 2025, used similar fraudulent means to steal several other vehicles.

These included a Kia Forte from Haatso, a Honda Civic from Amasaman, and a Kia from Spintex, all within the Greater Accra Region. The suspect is believed to have received GH₵4,000 for each stolen vehicle.

During interrogation, Anderson admitted to the offences and subsequently led police to a location in Millennium City, where his alleged accomplice, Gideon Baah, also known as Nan, is believed to reside. However, Baah was not found on the premises and remains at large.

The police have since arraigned Nana Anderson before the court as investigations continue. Meanwhile, efforts are actively underway to track and arrest Gideon Baah.

The Command also urged the public, particularly those in the car rental business, to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or transactions to the nearest police station.

GNECC raises alarm over growing indiscipline in Ghana’s schools

0

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has expressed concern over what it describes as an escalating wave of indiscipline within the country’s pre-tertiary education system.

GNECC has warned that a growing trend of violence, brutality, and even murder in senior high schools threatens the core foundation of Ghana’s educational system.

In a statement on April 11, 2025, the coalition described these disturbing incidents as a reflection of systemic breakdowns within schools—spaces that are meant to nurture character, knowledge, and safety.

“Schools are increasingly becoming environments of fear and unrest,” GNECC stated.

“We must ask: What has gone wrong? Is it the erosion of values, the weakening of disciplinary structures, or the breakdown in the school-home-community relationship?”

GNECC believes the consequences of this rising indiscipline are far-reaching and require urgent, collaborative action among all stakeholders in education.

The group called on the government, parents, teachers, and religious institutions to address the crisis holistically.

To that end, GNECC has proposed a number of interventions, including:

Regular counseling services in schools to tackle emotional and psychological challenges faced by students.

Monthly counseling sessions to provide structured support systems for students.

Stronger parent-teacher partnerships to monitor and correct student behavior.

Surprise inspections and mandatory searches to deter the smuggling of prohibited items onto school premises.

Mental health awareness campaigns to support students’ psychological well-being.

The coalition also recommended the reintroduction of traditional disciplinary tools, such as Saturday inspections, which they believe were effective in maintaining order and discipline in past years.

Furthermore, GNECC urged the government to consider a collaborative management model with religious bodies that run faith-based schools.

Under this approach, the government would focus on infrastructure, salaries, and resources, while religious institutions would oversee moral instruction, discipline, and teaching standards.

“This division of labor has the potential to create a safer and more productive learning environment,” the coalition noted.

These concerns follow a tragic incident involving a student at Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Ashanti Region—Suzie Adwoa Pinamang—who was shot in the eye by a fellow student.

A coalition of grassroots organizations within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has heaped praise on President John Dramani Mahama for what they describe as the “brilliant appointment” of lawyer Martin Kwaku Ayisi as Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission.

According to the coalition—comprising National Soldiers for John Mahama, Election Has Consequences Movement, and Ghetto for John Mahama—President Mahama’s decision to retain Ayisi in office reflects wise leadership and a commitment to rewarding competence and loyalty within the party.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on April 11, 2025, Joshua Sika Nartey, leader of the coalition, expressed profound appreciation to President Mahama, noting that Ayisi’s performance since assuming office has been “nothing short of transformative” for both the Minerals Commission and the NDC grassroots.

“President Mahama’s appointment of Lawyer Ayisi is one of the best decisions of this administration. It reflects his values and experience, and he is clearly committed to the real reset agenda,” Nartey said.

The group outlined a number of achievements under Ayisi’s leadership, including:

The soon-to-be-completed Kumasi office of the Minerals Commission, scheduled for completion in June 2025.

State-of-the-art office complexes in Akim Oda, Bibiani, Bole, Damang, Kyebi, and Tamale.

Renovated staff residences in Bolgatanga, Tarkwa, Prestea, and Wa.

The training of 50 grassroots mine inspectors at top global institutions, such as the Colorado School of Mines and Curtin University.

They described Ayisi as a CEO who is not only results-oriented but also deeply attuned to the needs of the NDC’s grassroots members.

“He listens, he delivers, and he uplifts,” Nartey stated.

“His commitment to job creation and support for the underprivileged within the party cannot be overlooked.”

The coalition also warned against internal calls for Ayisi’s removal, calling such moves divisive and counterproductive.

“Anyone plotting against him is plotting against progress,” Nartey declared, urging the President and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to maintain confidence in Ayisi’s leadership.”

SLTF pays outstanding allowances to 65,000 teacher trainees

0

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has cleared outstanding teacher trainee allowances for the 2023/2024 academic year, disbursing payments to a total of 65,685 students from 46 public Colleges of Education across the country.

The arrears, which covered three months, have now been fully cleared. This move reaffirms the SLTF’s core mandate of providing financial support to students pursuing tertiary education in Ghana.

According to a statement issued on Friday, April 11, the disbursement also reflects the government’s reset agenda, which focuses on strengthening support systems in the education sector and ensuring uninterrupted academic progress for the nation’s future workforce.

“The SLTF remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring timely, transparent, and efficient financial support services delivery for the benefit of students,” the statement said.

To avoid future delays, the Fund emphasized that robust measures are being put in place to ensure the consistency, reliability, and seamless execution of subsequent disbursements.

These efforts, the statement reads, will be aligned strictly with established policy directives to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the allowance payment system.

Bawku conflict hasn’t worsened under Mahama govt – Zebilla MP

0

The Member of Parliament for Zebilla, Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla, has refuted claims that the Bawku conflict worsened under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

This follows the Minority New Patriotic Party’s assertion that the Bawku conflict had deteriorated under the current administration, with rising fatalities and widespread destruction of property.

This followed the recent violent clash between police and youth in the area, which reportedly resulted in deaths and injuries. Reports also indicate that the private residences of Bawku MP Mahama Ayariga and Pusiga MP Lardi Ayii Ayamba were set ablaze during the unrest.

But speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Friday April 11, Ndebilla described such assertions as misleading and deceptive to the public.

He argued that the escalation of the conflict in recent years occurred under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regime, pointing to significant developments that have intensified tensions in the area.

“In the last three to four years under the NPP regime, the issue has escalated to a very high extent, to the extent that a lot of things happened during that period which have exacerbated the issues in the catchment area,” Ndebilla stated.

The Zebilla MP emphasised that peace-building is a gradual process and cannot be expected to resolve longstanding issues within a short timeframe.

“You do not expect a problem that has existed for eight years, four years, to just be solved in three years. Peace-building is a process, and we really are hoping that we will be able to find lasting solutions to the problem,” he added.

Ndebilla reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in Bawku and called for a collective approach to address the challenges.

Okuapehene Sompahene backs women’s football to empower Ghana’s youth

0

According to Nana Kwasi Osew, focusing on grassroots talent development is key According to Nana Kwasi Osew, focusing on grassroots talent development is key

Nana Kwasi Osew, also known as Dr. George E. Gyamfi-Osew—Okuapehene Sompahene and a Chartered Marketer—has pledged his support for women’s football in Ghana as a strategic tool to empower the nation’s youth.

His support comes through the newly launched Nana Kwasi Osew Foundation, unveiled at a ceremony on April 10, 2025, in Accra.

Nana, who also serves as a Management Consultant, intends to use sports—particularly women’s football—as a platform to promote education, leadership, and personal development among young Ghanaian women.

According to Nana Kwasi Osew, focusing on grassroots talent development is key to long-term transformation.

“Everything should start from the bottom. If you look at the seed and water it properly, it will grow to become a big tree,” he said in an interview at the launch.

He explained that the Foundation will identify talented female footballers from secondary schools, support their education through scholarships, and offer structured sporting and career development opportunities.

“This is more of a calling. We all have a responsibility—some may contribute their minds, their hearts, their money—but one way or another, we are all responsible for molding our youth to be the leaders we want them to become.”

The Foundation operates under three main pillars: education, economic empowerment, and social welfare. Its decision to make women’s football a flagship focus highlights a deliberate effort to address gender gaps in sports access and opportunity.

In addition to supporting sports, Nana plans to roll out vocational and digital skills training, entrepreneurship programmes, and community development initiatives.

Still, he believes sport offers a unique avenue to build confidence, discipline, and leadership among young women.

The launch event was chaired by Osuodumgya Otutu Ababio V, Chief of Adukrom and Nifahene of Akuapem.

He commended the initiative, stating:

“This Foundation stands as a catalyst for meaningful change… Let us not only celebrate it today, but support it continually—with our time, our resources, and our voices.”

With many young Ghanaian girls showing interest in football but lacking proper support, the Foundation’s intervention has been described as timely.

By nurturing talent from the grassroots and supporting it through education and mentorship, it aims to foster both sporting excellence and social equity.

Stakeholders remain optimistic that this step could help reshape the landscape of women’s sports in Ghana while inspiring a broader youth empowerment agenda.

GUTA backs secondhand traders, threatens nationwide protest over OR Foundation attacks

0

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has announced its intention to stage a nationwide protest in solidarity with secondhand clothing dealers, amid what it describes as a deliberate campaign to dismantle the industry.

This follows a strike action declared by the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association on Thursday, in response to what they call sustained defamatory statements and publications by the OR Foundation—an organization known for its criticism of Ghana’s thriving secondhand clothing trade.

Speaking at a press briefing on April 10, 2025, GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng emphasized that the union will not stand idle while efforts are made to undermine a sector that provides employment for thousands and drives informal sector commerce.

He described the planned demonstration as a show of unity and resistance against attempts to discredit and collapse the trade.

“We are calling for accountability. We demand a forensic audit into these activities, and we call on the Attorney General’s Department and the Ministry of the Interior to act because this issue could lead to a serious security problem.

The division among traders is concerning, and if care is not taken, it could result in major conflict, which we are determined to avoid,” Dr. Obeng said.

He added that: “The government must step in as early as possible, or we will call for a nationwide demonstration. That will not benefit anyone, as it would mean all sectors of trade joining us in supporting our brothers and sisters in the secondhand clothing industry to fight against this fraudulent grouping that is sowing seeds of discontent among us”

Most Ghanaians are like single-phased wires -Prof. Akosa

0

Imagine walking into a room with two light switches: one controls a single-phase system, while the other controls a two-phase system.

If the single-phase system fails, the lights go out, leaving the room in darkness. But with the two-phase system, even if one phase fails, the other keeps the lights on.

For Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, a renowned pathologist, academic, and social commentator, this analogy perfectly captures the state of intellectual engagement in Ghana.

“Most Ghanaians are like single-phase wires,” Prof. Akosa told the audience during his address at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Public Lecture Series on April 11.

His words were simple but powerful: many in Ghana, he argued, are trapped in one-dimensional thinking, unable to engage with the complexities of the world around them.

In his keynote speech, Prof. Akosa emphasized that the reason for this limited thinking lies in the country’s educational approach.

He compared the narrow, linear thinking to a single-phase electrical system: once one thought process or idea fails, there’s nothing to fall back on.

He challenged the audience to think critically about the current educational structure that keeps Ghanaians intellectually constrained and unable to process the complexities of modern life.

The heart of Prof. Akosa’s message focused on reforming Ghana’s education system to nurture multidimensional thinking, beginning with early childhood education.

He firmly believes that the foundation of critical thinking and intellectual engagement must be laid early in a child’s life.

“If we want to change the way people think, we need to start by changing how we teach our children,” he said.

Prof. Akosa criticized traditional methods that promote linear learning.

“Teaching children ‘A is for Apple, B is for Ball’ might seem harmless, but it doesn’t encourage critical thinking,” he explained.

These methods, while foundational, do not provide children with the tools to analyze, critique, or question.

Instead, he called for a shift to an educational approach that encourages children to explore multiple ideas and perspectives.

For him, a key aspect of this change would involve a bilingual education system. He proposed that children be taught primarily in their mother tongue until the age of eight.

This approach, he argued, would enable children to understand the world in a language that resonates with them on a deep level.

English, as a second language, would then be introduced later at around Primary 3 when children are more capable of processing and translating concepts from their native language into English.

“If we adopt this method,” he said, “by the time these children are nine, their vocabulary and cognitive skills will amaze us.”

Prof. Akosa believes that by empowering children to think in both their native language and English, we can help them develop the intellectual flexibility needed to navigate the complexities of an interconnected world.

Beyond language, Prof. Akosa’s vision calls for a fundamental shift in the way Ghanaians view education.

He believes that every child has the potential to be a prodigy, but that potential can only be realized if the education system encourages them to think critically and engage with complex ideas from an early age.

“Our children are not empty vessels to be filled with knowledge; they are thinkers, but they need the right system to unlock their full potential,” he stressed.

This, according to Prof. Akosa, is the key to moving Ghana from a “single-phase” mentality to a more dynamic, complex way of thinking.

He called on institutions like the University of Education, Winneba, to lead the charge in this educational revolution.

“UEW has the power to become the birthplace of this change,” he said, urging the university community to take the initiative in rethinking how education is delivered across the country.

Prof. Akosa’s plea for change was clear: Ghana cannot continue with an educational system that limits its children’s intellectual growth.

The current system, he argued, does not prepare children for the future one that demands critical thinkers capable of understanding and engaging with diverse perspectives.

Instead, Ghana needs a generation of learners who are not confined by “single-phase” thinking but are empowered to think in multiple dimensions, analyzing the world from different angles.

Prof. Akosa’s words echoed i: “The future of Ghana depends on how we educate our children today.”

His vision of a bilingual, multidimensional education system is not just about language or academic achievement it’s about giving Ghana’s future leaders the tools to think beyond the ordinary, to break free from narrow, limited perspectives, and to tackle the complex challenges of tomorrow.

The path to transforming Ghana’s education system, he argued, must start now beginning with the youngest minds.

“The change starts with us, here at UEW,” Prof. Akosa said, concluding his lecture with a call to action for educators, policymakers, and the Ghanaian public.

The intellectual future of the nation, he stressed, depends on moving beyond the limitations of single-phase thinking and embracing a more complex, multifaceted approach to education.

GUBA leads historic Memphis-Ghana Trade Mission, paving the way for diaspora investment

The City of Memphis, in collaboration with GUBA (Grow, Unite, Build Africa), has successfully hosted a high-level delegation from Ghana as part of the recently concluded Memphis-Ghana Trade Mission—a powerful initiative aimed at fostering collaboration, attracting investment, and strengthening cultural and tourism ties between Memphis and Ghana.

The delegation was led by Ghana’s Hon. Over several days, the group engaged with public and private institutions, identifying opportunities to build sustainable partnerships and promote bilateral growth.

This landmark mission was coordinated by Lady Dentaa Amoateng MBE, President and CEO of GUBA Enterprise, and Augustine Boateng, Deputy Chief Information Officer at the City of Memphis, in partnership with the Mayor’s office.

The Trade Mission featured high-level engagements with:
• The Greater Memphis Chamber
• Memphis Tourism
• Memphis Black Chamber
• The Entrepreneurs Network Center
• The City of Memphis Office of Contract Compliance
• The Ghanaian Association in Memphis
• University of Memphis – Ghanaian student community

Beyond business, the delegation experienced Memphis’ cultural richness, including visits to Bass Pro Pyramid and the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, underscoring the shared heritage and cultural synergies that exist between the two regions.

A special highlight was the delegation’s visit to the University of Memphis, where they met Ghanaian students currently studying in the city.

This session created a heartfelt connection, sparking discussions on exchange programs, scholarships, and staying connected to one’s roots—paving the way for educational bridges between Ghana and Memphis.

A pivotal moment of the mission was a formal meeting with the Honorable Mayor Paul Young. In a high-level dialogue with the delegation, Mayor Young reaffirmed Memphis’ commitment to building a meaningful and enduring relationship with Ghana.

“This Trade Mission lays the foundation for ongoing collaboration that can benefit our people economically, culturally, and educationally,” said Mayor Young.

Among the significant topics discussed was the potential for bilateral cooperation in public safety and emergency response.

Both parties explored plans to initiate training programs for Ghanaian police and fire service personnel in partnership with Memphis’ emergency services departments.

This initiative would enable Ghana’s public safety officials to benefit from Memphis’ expertise in community policing, fire safety, and emergency response systems, fostering knowledge exchange and strengthening institutional capacity on both sides.

The Memphis-Ghana Trade Mission marks a significant step toward building a lasting bridge between Memphis and Ghana.

From policy dialogues and business networking to cultural appreciation and educational engagement, the visit opened doors to joint projects, tourism campaigns, investment pipelines, and knowledge exchange.

Your promise to recruit Bawku residents is very unfortunate

Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh

Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has condemned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over his promise to recruit into the police service residents of Bawku who lay down their arms amid the conflict in the area.

Speaking during a press conference held by the Minority on April 11, 2025, he described the IGP’s statement as “unfortunate” and potentially damaging, given the sensitive nature of national security and importance of fairness in law enforcement recruitments.

“The comment of the IGP – this is purported to be his major public statement ever since he was appointed and maybe he made that statement just on the spur of the moment but it is clearly an unfortunate statement,” he stated.

He continued, “it is most unfortunate to say that if you lay down your arms, you’ll be considered for recruitment. It is out of place. If any other person said this, yes, we may not attach seriousness but coming from the IGP – and the ramifications of that statement – it is critical.”

Annoh-Dompreh also questioned the rationale behind the comment, stressing it could set a dangerous precedent.

“Does it mean that people from other parts of the country will also just fight and then, when they lay down their arms, they will be considered for recruitment into the police service?” he quizzed.

Bawku, a town in the Upper East Region, has experienced prolonged ethinic conflicts resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and significantly affecting regional stability and development.

Asante Mampong NDC apologises for unrest over MCE nomination

0

The Asante Mampong Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued an apology following the unrest over the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

Some aggrieved supporters of the party in the Constituency stormed the party’s office on Thursday, April 10, vandalising property and setting some items ablaze outside the premises.

The youth claimed they had received information that one Esther Dwomoh had been nominated for the MCE position, though there had been no official communication from the Presidency.

According to them, three individuals, the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate Yakubu Yakubu, the current Constituency Chairman Mohammed Kamil, and Imoro Iddrisu, were shortlisted after the vetting, and they insist one of them must be nominated.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM‘s Eyewitness News on Friday April 11, Kwaku Bernasko, the Constituency Communications Officer, expressed regret over the actions of some party supporters and extended apologies to the nation, party hierarchy, regional and national executives, and President John Dramani Mahama.

Bernasko explained that the unrest stemmed from concerns raised during the vetting process, noting that initially, eight candidates applied for the MCE position, and three were shortlisted at the regional level for national vetting.

However, upon reaching the national stage, two additional names were added to the list, sparking questions among party supporters.

The situation escalated further when rumours emerged that the MCE position had been awarded to Esther Dwomoh, a candidate who was not part of the original shortlist. Dwomoh, who joined the NDC from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2022, was perceived by supporters as not being a member in good standing due to her relatively recent affiliation with the party.

Supporters argued that the three shortlisted candidates, who had served the party for over 20 years, deserved consideration for the position.

While Bernasko acknowledged the frustrations of party supporters, he condemned the acts of vandalism and violence that occurred during the unrest, stating that such actions go against the principles of the NDC.

“As for the vandalisation and the violence, we condemn that outright because it goes against the principles of the party,” Bernasko said.

The NDC leadership in Asante Mampong has called for calm and urged supporters to trust the party’s processes as efforts are made to address their concerns.

World Expo 2025 to open in Japanese city of Osaka

0

Osaka, Apr. 11, (dpa/GNA) – The opening ceremony for this year’s world exhibition Expo 2025 will take place in the Japanese city of Osaka on Saturday in the presence of Japanese Emperor Naruhito.

The gates will open to the general public on Sunday. The Expo site, located on the artificial island of Yumeshima, is surrounded by the Grand Ring, a two-kilometre-long and up to 20-metre-high wooden construction which the organizers say is the largest in the world.

The imposing structure is intended to symbolise the overarching concept of the Expo – diversity and unity.

Over a period of six months, until October 13, more than 160 countries, regions and international organizations will be presenting their ideas in their pavilions on the central theme of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”.

The organizers expect 23 million visitors, although surveys indicate that interest among the Japanese population has so far been much lower than hoped for. Osaka last hosted the Expo in 1970, when more than 64 million visitors came.

Bawku: Recruits will go through standard procedure

0

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has clarified his recent remarks suggesting that youth in Bawku would be given priority in police recruitment if they lay down their arms.

His clarification follows public backlash and media scrutiny after a video of his interaction with residents in Bawku began circulating online.

Addressing the media, the IGP explained that his comments were aimed at decentralising the recruitment process to ensure inclusivity, particularly for individuals in remote and conflict-affected areas.

According to Mr. Yohuno, he assured the youth of Bawku that they would be given the opportunity to apply to the Ghana Police Service, but stressed that all applicants would still be required to go through the standard recruitment procedures.

He firmly stated that his remarks were not intended to imply preferential treatment or a departure from established recruitment guidelines.

“Many times we have recruitment centralised at the national headquarters, and then we are not able to get the full benefit of a regional balance of people being recruited. I have seen that there is a desire to get the job done,” he said.

“I am giving them the assurance that they should put down their arms. We have a lot of people in the police service now who came from this area, and we realise that they have helped a lot in the discharge of their duties as officers.”

“The assurance we gave to them was that ‘put down your weapons, and when it comes to recruitment, we will give you the advantage to participate, go through the normal process.’ I didn’t say anything wider to maybe show the requirement, but it looks as if the media is reporting something different; they will go through the normal process,” he added.

The IGP’s clarification seeks to address growing concerns that his initial statement could be misinterpreted as incentivising conflict or undermining the integrity of the police recruitment process.

Electricity tariff up 14.75%, water 4.02% effective May 3

0

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced an upward adjustment in electricity and water tariffs, set to take effect on May 3, 2025.

The revision follows the Commission’s quarterly tariff review process for the first and second quarters of 2025.

The review is aimed at ensuring revenue stability for utility service providers while minimising the financial impact on consumers.

Under the new rates, electricity tariffs will increase by an average of 14.75%, while water tariffs will go up by 4.02%.

The PURC attributed the adjustments to several factors, including the exchange rate between the Ghana cedi and the US dollar, inflation projections, fuel costs (particularly natural gas), and the current hydro-thermal generation mix.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 11, the Commission also cited the need to recover 50% of outstanding revenue—amounting to GHS976 million—from previous quarters in 2024. This repayment obligation significantly influenced the upward adjustment. To mitigate the burden on consumers, the remaining 50% will be spread over subsequent quarters in 2025.

The PURC emphasised that the tariff increments are essential to addressing under-recoveries by utility companies, which, if unaddressed, could result in service disruptions. Despite the increase, the Commission underscored its commitment to balancing the interests of both consumers and utility providers amid ongoing economic pressures.

The full details of the tariff adjustments will be published in the government gazette and made available on the Commission’s official website for public access.

Replace obsolete equipment – Mintah Akandoh to management of Ridge Hospital

0

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has urged authorities at Ridge Hospital to maintain and replace obsolete medical equipment, emphasising that they charge fees for the services they provide.

The minister expressed serious concern about the deteriorating state of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, following an unannounced inspection on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Addressing the management of medical equipment, Akandoh pointed out the contradiction in hospitals charging patients for services while still expecting the government to maintain or replace aging equipment.

“Hospitals run this equipment at a fee, yet when the equipment becomes obsolete, they expect the government to maintain or replace it,” he said.

The inspection uncovered troubling conditions at the facility, especially in the emergency unit. Critical diagnostic equipment such as MRI and CT scan machines had reportedly been out of service for more than two years, severely hampering the hospital’s capacity to deliver timely and effective medical care.

It was also discovered that none of the washrooms in the emergency department were functional.

“This is not the Ridge Hospital we handed over to the previous administration. It must be restored to its former glory,” the minister stated.

Akandoh appeared visibly dissatisfied during the inspection and stressed that the hospital should focus on healing rather than internal conflict.

Police seize mining equipment in latest crackdown on galamsey

0

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals and seized several mining equipment and unregistered vehicles in latest crackdown on illegal mining activities near Dorimon in the Wa West District.

The operation, carried out on Thursday, April 10, targeted illegal mining operations on the Black Volta River at Chiantanga, a community known for recent environmental concerns stemming from small-scale mining.

In a press release signed by DCOP Nii Danto Offei Lomotey, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, the suspects were named as Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu.

The police retrieved ten Changfang machines used in alluvial mining, along with two unregistered PNE and Apsonic tricycles and a motorbike with registration numbers M-24-NR 6010 and M-23-UW 4413.

Additionally, two unregistered Haojue and Apsonic motorbikes and six student mattresses were confiscated from the site, suggesting that the suspects may have been camping there during their operations.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and are expected to be arraigned before court soon.

“The Regional Police Command reiterates its commitment to cracking down on illegal mining activities in the region,” the statement emphasized.

Illegal mining continues to pose serious threats to water bodies, farmlands, and community health in parts of Ghana. The Black Volta River, which serves as a vital water source for many communities in the Upper West Region, has been under pressure from unregulated mining activities that pollute the water and destroy surrounding ecosystems.

Awudome Cemetery to be modernised — AMA

0

The Awudome Cemetery, one of the public cemeteries in the Greater Accra Region, is set to undergo redevelopment to achieve a modern appearance.

The plan includes designing the landscape with lawns, trees and various plants, as well as redesigning the walkways.

In an interview with The Mirror last Friday, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Gilbert Ankrah, stated that the assembly was preparing to carry out this project.

The primary focus of the redevelopment is to ensure a serene and orderly environment at the cemetery, making it a simple place for visitors.

Mr Ankrah explained that the redevelopment would specifically occur on the eastern side of the two burial grounds, directly opposite the State Transport Company (STC).

This section of the cemetery has been closed for burials for many years, and the time has come to revitalise it.

Regarding the current cemetery status, Mr Ankrah noted that the western side, which was open for public burials, was not yet at full capacity. He said graves are allocated to visitors in an organised manner to ensure efficient use of space.

He confirmed that there were no immediate plans to close or relocate the eastern yard, which is also opposite the State Housing Company (SHC) headquarters.

“The eastern section of the cemetery, which has been closed for many years, is transforming to prepare it for use as a modern facility, while the other section remains open to the public,” he explained.

He also addressed misconceptions about burial depths, clarifying, “graves are not dug to a depth of three feet, as some claim. The standard depth is six feet to accommodate a coffin adequately.”

During a visit to the cemetery, it was observed that the area had become a bustling commercial hub, with auto repair shops and vulcanising businesses operating nearby.

Additionally, some areas around the cemetery had turned into dumping sites, while others had been used for leisure, with individuals seen lounging on broken tombstones.

In response to these issues, the AMA PRO mentioned that the assembly planned to relocate all the mechanics operating near the cemetery to suitable sites. He said the assembly would improve lighting in and around the cemetery.

Acknowledging reports of criminal activities and drug use in the area, Mr Ankrah gave an assurance that the assembly would collaborate with security agencies to implement measures to combat such issues.

“The assembly is taking proactive steps to secure the cemetery and the surrounding lands. These measures include enforcing regulations to prevent further encroachment and working with relevant stakeholders to ensure the area is protected,” Mr Ankrah assured.

Otumfuo’s mediation yielding positive results, let’s de-escalate -Minority

0

The Minority in Parliament has lauded the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his ongoing mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict, describing them as constructive and yielding positive outcomes.

Their commendation comes in the wake of renewed violence on Thursday, April 10, involving clashes between police and local youth, which reportedly resulted in casualties and injuries. The private residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, was also allegedly set ablaze during the unrest.

Addressing a press briefing in Accra on Friday, April 11, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, called for calm and urged all parties to support the peace process.

“So far, very diligent steps have been taken by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in mediating this conflict and ensuring that peace is restored. All the efforts that have been made so far are yielding some results,” he commended.

Rev. Fordjour emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions in the area to allow the mediation process to continue smoothly.

“However, this escalation has come in, and we’re asking that we de-escalate. So that the ongoing mediation continues,” he stated.

The Minority reiterated its commitment to supporting all peaceful initiatives aimed at resolving the long-standing conflict in Bawku.

‘This is not the Ridge hospital we handed over’

0

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed disappointment over the poor state of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital.

During an unannounced inspection of the hospital on April 11, 2025, he criticised the management for allowing the facility to deteriorate.

“This is not the Ridge Hospital we handed over to the former administration. I must be honest, this is not the Ridge Hospital we have all been boasting about. Ridge must return to its former glory, and we will ensure that happens. The MRI is not working. The CT scan is not working. I asked them to take me to the washroom, we walked more than 2 km looking for one. So yes, that is true.

“During the transition period, we read certain documents indicating that there was a program in place to fix all this equipment. But later, upon reviewing the reports and verifying for ourselves, we realised the reality was quite the opposite,” he lamented.

Interior Minister justifies deportation of foreigners involved in galamsey

0

The Minister for the Interior and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, has defended the government’s ongoing deportation of foreign nationals involved in illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, describing it as a lawful and necessary intervention to curb the escalating menace.

Speaking at the commissioning of a two-storey office facility and a vehicle for the Ghana Immigration Service at Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region, the Minister explained that deportation is a more immediate and practical response, especially in light of the logistical challenges in detaining and prosecuting foreign offenders within Ghana’s justice system.

According to Muntaka, the country currently lacks the requisite infrastructure, including adequate police cells and prison facilities to hold foreign nationals awaiting trial, a process that can often be slow and complex.

He stressed that removing such individuals from the country quickly serves Ghana’s best interests.

“The move is not arbitrary,” the Minister assured. He noted that comprehensive measures are in place to properly process those being deported.

“Fingerprints and other biometric data of deportees are being captured, and trained immigration officers are assigned to escort them to their countries of origin, where they will be handed over to relevant authorities for any further legal action.”

The Interior Minister revealed, that 107 foreign nationals have been deported under the initiative, with an additional 13 currently undergoing repatriation procedures. He added that all deportees would be permanently barred from re-entering Ghana.

The event, which happened on Friday, March 11, was held in recognition of philanthropic efforts by Mr. Yaw Amponsah Marfo, popularly known as “Agya Wiase,” who sponsored the construction of the immigration facility in Asante Mampong.

Spain boss backs Real Madrid comeback against Arsenal

0

Real Madrid need to pull off a miracle to revive their UEFA Champions League title defence hopes next week.

Los Blancos play host to Arsenal on Wednesday night in a crunch quarter final second leg following their brutal 3-0 defeat in London.

Mikel Arteta’s side stormed to a dominant first leg lead via two Declan Rice free kicks at the Emirates Stadium with Real Madrid left stunned.

Carlo Ancelotti was furious with his players at full time as the Italian coach openly called out their attitude in the second half of the contest.

Ancelotti now faces the task of producing a historic comeback with only three previous instances of a team overturning a three-goal first leg deficit in UCL knockout stage history – and Barcelona the only team to come from four goals down.

Real Madrid Arsenal loss

Alongside the storm of pressure surrounding Ancelotti, he also faces a battle to keep Real Madrid on Barcelona’s tail, as the La Liga title race tightens up.

Ancelotti will rotate for the weekend trip to Alaves but he will need everything to go right against the Gunners on April 16.

However, Real Madrid have developed a reputation for coming back from the dead in the Champions League in recent seasons, and Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente believes the tie is still within Ancelotti’s grasp.

It’s still very open. We all know how Real Madrid can play at home, particularly in Europe, and I’m not giving up on that tie,” as per quotes from Diario Sport.

“Barcelona played a fantastic game in their match with Borussia Dortmund.”

De la Fuente could be in attendance at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg with Raul Asencio and Fran Garcia potential starters and Dani Ceballos working back to full fitness.

David Raya and Mikel Merino will be looking to catch his eye for Arteta’s visitors with the latter netting the third goal in the first leg.

Rev Ntim Fordjour urges government to act swiftly and restore peace in Bawku

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Rev John Ntim Fordjour Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Rev John Ntim Fordjour

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has appealed to the feuding factions in Bawku to support ongoing peace efforts.

In a post shared on his official X page on Friday, April 11, 2025, he urged the government to promptly address the security situation in the township.

“We addressed a minority press conference today, calling on the government to act swiftly to contain the deteriorating security situation in Bawku.

“We urge calm among all feuding factions and appeal for restraint from engaging in reprisal attacks that may further escalate tensions,” he said.

He bemoaned the impact of the long-standing conflict.

“As a strategic border town, Bawku’s instability poses a wider national and regional security risk. The expansion of attacks to other regions, including the North East and Ahafo, further underscores the urgent need for the conflict to be resolved.

“The continued insecurity in Bawku is crippling essential services and has forced schools to shut down, depriving children of their right to education,” he noted.

The lawmaker also lauded the Asantehene for his role in mediating the conflict.

“We commend the diligent leadership of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, in mediation efforts toward peacebuilding in Bawku. We also urge the security agencies to discharge their mandate with absolute diplomacy, firmness, and fairness, taking into account the emotional, cultural, and traditional sensitivities of the Bawku enclave,” he added.

Andre Onana set to be dropped for Man Utd’s trip to Newcastle

0

Andre Onana is the goalkeeper of Manchester United Andre Onana is the goalkeeper of Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly at risk of losing his starting spot ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Newcastle on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

Onana endured a difficult outing in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Lyon on Thursday, April 10, 2025, and multiple reports suggest it might cost him his starting role when the Red Devils face Newcastle.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper made errors leading to both of Lyon’s goals. First, he failed to deal with a cross that ended up in the net, and later he spilled a shot, gifting Lyon the equalizer late in the game after goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee seemed to have secured United a valuable first-leg lead.

Although manager Rúben Amorim publicly backed Onana after the draw in Lyon, reports from the Daily Mail now claim the Portuguese manager is considering the option of resting his goalkeeper for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle.

If Onana is dropped, Altay Bayindir is expected to step in. However, the 26-year-old Turkish international is yet to feature in a Premier League game for United, with all seven of his appearances coming in other competitions.

IGP’s Bawku recruitment promise ‘unfortunate’ – Security analyst

0

Security analyst Richard Kumador has criticized the statement made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over his promise to give the youth in Bawku priority in police recruitment if they lay down their arms.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Friday, April 11,  Kumador questioned the legitimacy and propriety of the IGP’s assurance, stressing that recruitment decisions of such magnitude require established guidelines and should not be made unilaterally.

“When he said they should lay down their arm, and they will be recruited into the police service, I think that is not a statement that should be coming from the IGP. He has not set up the criteria, he has not set up the modality.”

He emphasized the need to consult the Interior Ministry on whether due processes for such recruitment have been completed, particularly considering that the Ministry had earlier established a committee to develop proper modalities for entry into the security services.

“The Minister of Interior has set up a committee, which we need to ask the Minister whether the committee has finished up with the work on the modality for people getting involved into the security agencies, particularly the police.”

Kumador expressed deep concern over what he described as politicization and abuse of recruitment processes within the police service, warning that such practices have undermined the professionalism of the force.

“The police is weakened today because politicians and security officers who must know better have bastardized the place with recruitment, and people who do not have business joining the police are there.”

He concluded by urging the IGP to reconsider the recruitment assurance and adopt a more structured, lawful approach.

“It is an unfortunate statement, and I think he will need to look at it again and do something about it.”

Mr. Kumador’s comments came in reaction to remarks made by the IGP during a visit to Bawku earlier on  Friday, April 11.

As part of efforts to restore peace in the conflict-affected area, the IGP assured the youth that a special police recruitment team would be deployed to the region and that those who disarmed would be given priority in the enlistment process.

At the prestigious Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit in Paris, Professor Amos Laar of the University of Ghana’s School of Public Health presented Ghana’s innovative approach to reforming food policies, transforming food environments, and addressing the growing burden of obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Invited by the Government of France and UNICEF, Professor Laar contributed to three high-level events.

Thus, the Transforming Food Environments for Children, co-hosted by UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and French parliamentarians at the Assemblée Nationale (French National Assembly), The N4G Scientific Conference, hosted by CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) and the French Development Agency (AFD) and  A Roundtable on Enabling Environments for NCD Prevention, organized by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and WHO.

In each forum, Professor Laar highlighted Ghana’s existing Sugar-Sweetened Beverage (SSB) tax and its bold pursuit of healthier food environments through a suite of double-duty food-based policies. These include front-of-pack nutrition labelling, marketing restrictions, public food procurement standards, and fiscal measures promoting healthy diets.

These policies are anchored by the Ghana Double-Duty Nutrient Profiling System, an initiative spearheaded by the Healthier Diets for Healthy Lives (HD4HL) Project, which he leads.

“The Ghana experience reflects both the promise and complexity of food policy reform. The SSB tax, for example, resulted from years of evidence generation, stakeholder engagement, and coalition advocacy,” Professor Laar noted. “It marks a shift from individual responsibility to structural accountability – recognizing the state’s ethical duty to foster healthier environments.”

He emphasized the pivotal role of civil society coalitions, particularly the Advocacy for Health (A4H) Coalition, which includes the Coalition of Actors for Public Health Advocacy (CAPHA), Ghana NCD Alliance, Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND), Ghana Public Health Association (GPHA), and the Ghana Medical Association. These groups countered industry narratives and shaped public discourse, with strong political will and partnerships driving policy progress.

Also at the summit, Ghana unveiled its 2025 N4G Commitments – 10 ambitious goals to strengthen climate resilience, food security, nutrition, and public investment. Professor Laar, was commissioned by the Government of Ghana to facilitate the development of the Commitments.

Reflecting on Ghana’s journey, and the role of academics in national policy development, he said:

“This has been a long journey. In 2012, we faced a rude awakening that data poverty and policy inertia needed to be addressed. We spent tens of thousands of hours generating, curating, and strategically sharing evidence. That evidence now informs the current food policy initiatives.

However, he warned of the increasing threat of commercial interference in policy spaces:

“Corporate influence is not just a barrier – it is a structural threat to healthy policy progress. Policy spaces must be protected – not just occupied.

IGP clears air on Bawku recruitment, urges youth to embrace peace

0

Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno

The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has clarified recent comments he made about recruiting youth from Bawku into the Ghana Police Service, emphasising that his remarks were not meant to suggest preferential treatment or disregard for recruitment guidelines.

Speaking during a visit to the area on Friday, April 11, 2025, the IGP explained that his intentions were to encourage the youth to shun violence.

“During the meeting we had with the Bawku Naba, the chiefs, and the people, including the youth of Bawku, we assured them that if they are able to lay down their weapons, they will be given the opportunity to participate in the recruitment process. This will be done through the normal procedures,” he stated.

“But it seems the media is publishing something quite different. Recruitment will still follow the normal process. Instead of centralising recruitment in Accra, Kumasi, or other big cities, we will ensure that recruitment reaches even the remotest areas of this country. This way, all qualified youth, regardless of where they are located, can participate,” he added.

The IGP and his team are in Bawku for a three-day engagement aimed at fostering peace and monitoring the security situation in the township.

Finance minister must be decisive in tackling 10% US tariff

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

The President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Dr Humphrey Ayim-Darke, has called on the government to take proactive measures in response to the 10% tariff imposed on Ghana by the United States.

According to him, the Minister of Finance must take decisive action to manage the situation and prevent a potential fiscal crisis.

Ghana’s key exports could be significantly affected by the tariff, especially given the country’s economic vulnerability to external pressures.

“The Finance Minister knows that if he doesn’t get it right, he’ll have a tough time balancing the books, generating revenue, and raising domestic income, which is largely dependent on imports. The government must take bold steps to ensure some level of certainty in the cocoa market and the broader export space,” Dr Ayim-Darke was quoted by myjoyonline.com.

The United States has announced a temporary 90-day pause on the implementation of the tariff.

The AGI President said the pause presents Ghana with an opportunity to engage in meaningful consultation and develop strategic solutions in response to the situation.

“This is still an unfolding event, and we are closely studying its dynamics. Without the 90-day pause, our anxiety levels would have been much higher. For now, we are using this time to consult, engage with the government and our counterparts, and assess the position of our regional bloc,” he explained.

He cautioned against issuing premature public statements that could cause panic, emphasising the importance of a united and deliberate national response.

“It will be more useful if the country adopts a collective engagement approach,” he added.

FDA launches nationwide swoop to combat rising opioid abuse

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has embarked on a nationwide community swoop aimed at addressing the increasing abuse of opioids across Ghana.

The operation is being carried out in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission, GRA Customs Division, the Pharmacy Council, and the Ghana Police Service’s Drug Law Enforcement Unit.

Speaking to the media on Friday, April 11, following an intelligence-led operation in Tema and Ashaiman, Dr. Olivia Agyekumaa Boateng, the FDA’s Director of Tobacco and Substance Abuse, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to protecting public health and safety.
She revealed the FDA plans to intensify collaboration with stakeholders and expand public sensitization efforts to combat the growing misuse of opioids.

“We are telling everybody that we are coming at them. This is affecting our youth, and we are coming at them with a lot of strategies, apart from the public education that we are doing on the dangers that these drugs have on their daily lives,” she stated.
Dr. Boateng emphasized the importance of removing illicit drugs that have already infiltrated the market, which she said are fuelling the growing abuse.

“It is important to raid the market of what has already entered the country that is fuelling the abuse. We are also going to ensure that there is strict broader control. Then we are collaborating with mental health, so that already addicted persons can receive some form of psycho-support,” she added.

Education was meant to liberate us, but it has betrayed us – Lumumba

In a fiery address at the University of Education, Winneba, Professor P. L. O. Lumumba delivered a scathing critique of Africa’s education systems, describing them as a betrayal of the continent’s long-fought liberation.
“We were told that education would liberate us,” he said, standing before a rapt audience of students and academics. “But what kind of liberation is this, when we are producing graduates who are more alienated from Africa than connected to it?”

We must re-enter 21st century with laws known to Ghana – Prof Lumumba

0

Anti-corruption crusader and renowned Pan-Africanist, Professor P.L.O. Lumumba, has called for a rethinking of Ghana’s legal and judicial systems, urging the country and the continent to cast off colonial legacies and embrace laws and customs rooted in African identity and contemporary realities.

Speaking at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Public Lecture Series on Friday, April 11, Prof. Lumumba challenged the prevailing tendency of African legal systems to defer to colonial-era practices and foreign precedents

“Must we always have this inadequacy to compare ourselves with others? We must change in order to enter the 21st century with confidence,” he noted.

In a pointed critique of judicial symbolism, he mocked the outdated dress code of legal practitioners.

“When you see our judges addressing, they still dress like Father Christmas. Whoever told us that justice could only be administered when you dress like Father Christmas, I do not know,” he remarked.

Prof. Lumumba particularly highlighted Ghana’s continued reliance on English legal precedents, even in cases involving local matters such as land disputes.

“When we are deciding our own land matters in Ghana in Cape Coast we still want to cite some decision that was made by some English judge, as if we do not have our own land laws,” he remarked.

He stressed that the time has come for Ghana, and by extension Africa, to “rethink and re-enter the 21st century with laws that are known to Ghana.”

According to him, this is not merely a legal matter, but one of sovereignty, cultural pride, and practical relevance.

The Hohoe-based club currently sits at the top of the Division One Zone Three table and was hoping to secure all three points to strengthen its grip on first place. However, a determined Attram De Visser side ended Hohoe United’s six-game unbeaten run, handing them a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a penalty.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, referee Juliet Appiah awarded a penalty to Attram De Visser after Hohoe United goalkeeper Amissah brought down an Attram De Visser forward in the box.

The decision didn’t sit well with the away fans, who immediately voiced their anger, creating a heated atmosphere as tempers flared in the stands.

Police officers were called into action to calm tensions as angry Hohoe United fans expressed their displeasure over the penalty decision, with some supporters even seen shoving each other in the heat of the moment.

Despite the chaos off the pitch, Attram De Visser held their nerve on it, securing all three vital points and climbing into the top half of the Division One Zone Three standings.

Immediately after the game, tensions flared once again between fans of both teams, leading to another heated exchange. Police quickly intervened, stepping in to restore order as the situation escalated. Supporters were seen chasing each other, with some attempting to escalate the conflict further.

Engage youth to restore peace in Bawku – Minority tells Government

0

The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to take immediate and decisive action to address the renewed violent clashes in Bawku, urging for direct engagement with the youth and key stakeholders to help restore peace and stability.

Speaking at a press briefing today, April [Date], the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, expressed the Minority’s deep concern over the worsening security situation, which has led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

“We, the Minority, convey our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families,” he said. “To those injured, and to all individuals and organisations who have lost property as a result of the recent violence, our thoughts are with you.”

He stressed that the ongoing conflict requires a swift and proactive response.

Rev. Fordjour emphasized the importance of engaging young people in the affected communities, describing them as central to both the root causes and the resolution of the unrest.

“One of the key strategies we recommend is for the government to lead an honest and inclusive engagement with the youth and other stakeholders,” he stated. “When their concerns are genuinely listened to and addressed, the root causes of the violence can be resolved, and peace can return.”

He added that such engagement would reinforce the mediation efforts currently being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“This will create the necessary atmosphere for the Otumfuo’s mediation to continue effectively, and for other stakeholders to lend their support in maintaining peace,” he noted.

Rev. Fordjour commended the Asantehene for his leadership, describing his mediation efforts as “diligent” and “already yielding some positive results.”

“Otumfuo has taken very thoughtful steps in mediating the conflict and working towards the restoration of peace. The efforts made so far are encouraging,” he said. “However, this recent escalation is a setback, and we are calling for calm and de-escalation so that the ongoing mediation can proceed without disruption,” he concluded.

The clashes in Bawku have led to several casualties and significant damage to property. The conflict, largely attributed to longstanding ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, has resurfaced over the years, making the need for a sustainable resolution more urgent than ever.

The Minority has called on the government to demonstrate leadership by fostering meaningful dialogue, promoting inclusion, and addressing the immediate triggers of the violence to secure long-term peace in the region.

Minority calls on government to urgently resolve Bawku conflict

0

The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to take immediate and decisive action to find a sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict in Bawku.

According to the group, the current efforts have fallen short of restoring peace and stability to the area.

They stressed the need for more robust and strategic measures to end the violence and ensure lasting calm.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra today, (April 11, 2025), Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, cautioned that the failure to de-escalate the situation risks triggering a cycle of reprisals that could further entrench insecurity in the region.

Also present at the press conference were MP for Atwima Kwanwoma, Amankwa-Manu Kofi; MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh; and MP for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei.

“The Minority in Parliament is deeply concerned about the worsening security situation in Bawku, where persistent violence continues to endanger lives and displace residents,” Rev. Ntim Fordjour said.

“Over the past few months, the intensity and frequency of attacks including sporadic shootings, arson, and home invasions-have escalated, with reports suggesting a high death toll with many more people said to be missing than those reported dead,” he stressed.

Sophisticated weapons

He expressed concern over the increasing sophistication of weapons being used in the attacks, raising serious questions about the sources of these arms and the effectiveness of existing measures to prevent their proliferation.

“The growing sophistication of weaponry used in these attacks is particularly alarming, raising questions about the sources of arms and the effectiveness of measures to curb their proliferation.”

“Recent developments, including targeted bus attacks and the setting ablaze of the residence of Hon. Mahama Ayariga, reflect the increasing volatility of the situation and the level of frustration among sections of the youth,” he stressed.

National concern

Rev. Ntim Fordjour also stressed that, as a strategic border town, instability in Bawku presents a broader national and regional security threat.

He said the spread of attacks to other areas, including the North East and Ahafo regions, highlights the urgent need for a more coordinated and comprehensive response.

“It is evident that the current approach to addressing the conflict has not been sufficient to restore calm. The government must demonstrate greater urgency and decisiveness. The deteriorating situation in Bawku is a national concern, and the government must take immediate action to prevent further escalation.”

“The people of Bawku deserve to live in peace and security, and we urge the government to prioritize a sustainable resolution to this crisis before it spirals further out of control,” he said.

Additionally, he lamented the persistent insecurity in the area, noting that it is gradually crippling essential services, exacerbating the suffering of residents, and deepening the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

“Beyond the immediate security concerns, the instability has devastated the affected communities. Schools have been forced to shut down, depriving children of their right to education, while key institutions and businesses are fleeing the area due to safety concerns.”

“Critical sectors such as education and healthcare are severely impacted, with teachers, nurses, and other professionals refusing postings to Bawku for fear of their safety,” he added.

IGP’s promises

Responding to questions, Member of Parliament for Atwima Kwanwoma, Amankwa-Manu Kofi, referenced circulating messages on social media suggesting that Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, had allegedly promised to recruit members of the warring factions into the security services if they agreed to disarm.

Mr Amankwa-Manu described the alleged promise as “absurd,” warning that such a gesture could set a dangerous precedent by encouraging individuals from other ethnic groups to engage in conflict with the expectation of eventual recruitment once they lay down their arms.

“The visit by the IGP to the Bawku enclave is a step in the right direction that everybody should applaud but what i am reading on social media, if that is true, then the IGP is rather going to create more problems than good. To say that lay down your tools and that if you lay down your tools, we will consider you for recruitment is something that one cannot understand” ” he said.

He continued “To de-escalate the tension in Bawku it is important that we get the all parties involved to lay down their tools but for me, it will be absurd to recruit people into the security services based on the fact that they have laid down their tools. What it means is that if you do not even meet the criteria to be recruited, you will be recruited because you have laid down your tools.  That obviously is not the way to go.”

Minority’s commitment

Mr Amankwa-Manu reaffirmed the Minority’s commitment to supporting the government in finding a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict.

He emphasized the need for decisive and fair action, stating: “It is important that we address the Bawku issue once and for all. We all understand how sensitive this matter is. If care is not taken, and one ethnic group lays down its arms and is then recruited into the security services, we can all foresee the chaos this could spark across the nation.”

“We from the minority will support every move to bring finality and then to find solution to the situation in Bawku because Bawku is a border town and if care is not taken and we get these armed groupings using Bawku as a weak point, the entire country will be on its knees. We don’t want that,” he added.

Prof Akosa slams MPs over GETFund allocations amid economic hardships

Former Director General of Ghana Health Service, Professor Agyeman Badu Former Director General of Ghana Health Service, Professor Agyeman Badu

A former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has criticised Members of Parliament for prioritising their personal interests over the welfare of their constituents.

Speaking at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Public Lecture Series on Friday, April 11, 2025, he stated, “Nobody is prepared to help anybody. Everybody is prepared to help themselves. And I know an Honourable Member is here, but let me say something.”

“Last Friday, Parliament gave each Member of Parliament GH¢200,000 for GETFund projects and an additional GH¢150,000 to monitor those projects. There is nowhere in the world where you are given 75% of what you receive just to monitor a project. No, nowhere. Yet all the parliamentarians remained silent. They got the money; they got their ex-gratia; they got their car loans.”

He urged MPs to reflect on their responsibilities and prioritise the needs of their constituents.

“These are the people’s representatives, and meanwhile, the people are choking to death. So please, our representatives, look back. Think about us. Think about us, and let’s all work together to move this country forward,” he added.

Granting Starlink a license without local office was a mistake

0

Starlink is currently operating in Ghana Starlink is currently operating in Ghana

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has stated that it has become necessary for Starlink to establish a physical office in Accra, Ghana, since the company is already operating its services in the country.

He revealed that he has directed regulators to notify Starlink of the need to set up a local office.

According to the Minister, the decision to grant Starlink a license to operate in Ghana without ensuring the company had a physical presence was not well thought through.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on April 11, 2025, he said, “They need to have an office, yes, they need to. You can’t operate in our country and not have a presence here. I mean, I thought that the decision to even give the license without making sure they are resident in the country was poorly thought through.”

Last year, Ghana’s communications regulator, the National Communications Authority (NCA), announced that Starlink, a company affiliated with American billionaire and inventor Elon Musk, would officially begin operations in Ghana by the end of August 2024.

A statement issued by the NCA on August 22, 2024, confirmed that the decision followed the completion of all administrative and licensing procedures. It also stated that the internet service would be managed by SpaceX Starlink GH LTD.

Starlink is currently operating in Ghana.

Sam George expressed concerns that Starlink’s lack of local presence poses a risk to consumers, particularly when issues arise.

“Because today, if there’s a problem involving a Starlink client and the regulator needs to speak with them, we have to send an email to someone sitting somewhere in the US, and it can take two to three weeks for them to come down. What kind of regulation is that?” he said.

“All the other players in the industry are resident here. When I need to meet the CEO of any MNO, I can call, and within an hour, he’s in my office or at the regulator’s office. To protect the interest of the Ghanaian people, why should I have to send an email to someone offering services in my country and then wait weeks for a response?”

He added that this issue is not unique to Ghana, as many ICT ministers across the sub-region have also expressed concerns about the lack of physical representation by Starlink in their countries.
