Why OSP says Ken Ofori-Atta’s conduct is ‘totally unacceptable’ and has re-declared him wanted

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has re-declared former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, a wanted person and a fugitive from justice.

This was after Mr Ofori-Atta failed to appear before the OSP for an investigative interview scheduled for Monday, June 2, 2025.

The Special Prosecutor (SP), Kissi Agyebeng, has subsequently initiated processes for an Interpol red notice and extradition to compel the return of Mr Ofori-Atta to Ghana to face investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences.

At a press briefing in Accra Monday evening [June 2], Mr Agyebeng chronicled months of failed attempts to secure Mr Ofori-Atta’s personal attendance after the OSP first notified him, that he was under investigation.

He said the OSP’s patience with Mr Ofori-Atta had run out, following what he described as repeated delays and non-compliance with ongoing criminal investigations against him.

“This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025”.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case,” Mr Agyebeng stated.

We recall that by a letter dated 24 January 2025, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, a former Minister of Finance was informed that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced investigation into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences regarding cases in respect of which the OSP considered him a suspect. Further, he was directed to attend, in person, the OSP on 10 February 2025 for interviewing. Mr. Ofori-Atta was out of the jurisdiction at the time.

By a letter dated 31 January 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta informed the OSP, through his lawyers, that he was out of the jurisdiction indefinitely on medical grounds and that the firm would notify the OSP of his arrival in the country in aid of rescheduling his personal attendance at the OSP. Further, the lawyers offered its willingness to provide the OSP with any information we may require to aid in the investigation until his arrival in the country.

Upon receipt of these representations from his lawyers, the OSP, by a letter dated 5 February 2025, informed Mr. Ofori-Atta that the OSP did not need or required notification from his lawyers of his future arrival in the jurisdiction. The OSP acknowledged his lawyers’ offer to provide us with information in aid of the investigation.

However, the OSP insisted that his personal attendance at the OSP was required.

The OSP directed Mr. Ofori-Atta to indicate, by close of business on 10 February 2025, a reasonable date of his return to the jurisdiction and attendance at the OSP. The OSP warned him if that if he failed so to do, the OSP would take all necessary legal steps to secure his return to the jurisdiction and attendance at the OSP at our own choosing.

Mr. Ofori-Atta failed to indicate a reasonable date of his return to the jurisdiction upon the expiry of the 10 February 2025 deadline, except to still persist in his expressed intent of remaining indefinitely outside the jurisdiction by the transmission of his lawyers of a purported and brusque medical letter on 10 February 2025, which only sought, in effect, to state that he may undergo a possible surgical intervention in March 2025.

In the considered opinion of the OSP, that medical letter could not be held to be a disclosure of a reasonable date of Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return to the jurisdiction and attendance at the OSP since it merely indicated that there may be a possible surgical intervention that may or may not occur in March.

The letter, which was in no way a medical report, neither stated nor demonstrated that Mr. Ofori-Atta was a travel risk or that he was an invalid who needed around-the-clock intense medical attention to the point that travelling to the jurisdiction would endanger his life.

Upon the expiry of the 10 February 2025 deadline, the Special Prosecutor publicly declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a wanted person and a fugitive from justice on 12 February 2025 – on the ground that his avowed posture of remaining indefinitely outside the jurisdiction without indicating a reasonable time of his return to the jurisdiction showed clearly that he had no intention of voluntarily returning to the jurisdiction.

By a letter dated 17 February 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers transmitted to the Special Prosecutor, a communication laced with vituperation and designed variously as a denigration of the OSP; a lecture on their suppositions as to the mandate of the OSP; a threat of legal action; a sort of homily as to how the OSP should conduct its affairs; an attack on the person of the Special Prosecutor; and a suggestion that the Special Prosecutor had embarked on a personal vendetta against Mr. Ofori-Atta – without disclosing the alleged series of retaliatory, vengeful, or hostile acts the Special Prosecutor had directed at him or alleged exchange of such acts between Mr. Ofori-Atta and the Special Prosecutor.

Crucially, the 17 February 2025 letter from Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers failed to indicate a reasonable date of Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return to the jurisdiction and attendance at the OSP. On this reckoning, the OSP, by a letter dated 17 February 2025, re-affirmed and restated to Mr. Ofori-Atta that he remained a wanted person and a fugitive from justice. The OSP further stated that this tag would so remain until he indicated a reasonable time of his return to the jurisdiction with the necessary
and reasonable assurances of abiding by his indicated reasonable time, or until such time that the OSP enforced his return to the jurisdiction and attendance at the OSP, whichever came first.

By a letter dated 18 February 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers communicated to the OSP that he was scheduled for a possible surgical intervention in the United States on 20/21 March 2025 and further that taking the date of the possible surgical intervention into account, he would require a recovery period of six to eight weeks. On this basis, his lawyers stated that he should be able to return to the jurisdiction between 14 and 30 May 2025.

By a letter dated 18 February 2025, the OSP acceded to Mr. Ofori-Atta’s request to return voluntarily to the jurisdiction between 14 and 30 May 2025, as the Office deemed the indicated recovery period reasonable in the circumstances.

Consequently, the OSP removed Mr. Ofori Atta’s name from the list of wanted persons pending his voluntary return to the jurisdiction based on his own indicated dates.

Consequently, the OSP directed Mr. Ofori-Atta to attend the OSP, in person, on Monday 2 June 2025 at 13:30 GMT for interviewing. The OSP emphasised that if he failed to voluntarily return to the jurisdiction within his stated dates, and if he failed to attend the OSP on the rescheduled date of Monday 2 June 2025 at 13:30 GMT, his name would be re-entered on the list of wanted persons and the OSP would consider him a fugitive from justice, whereupon the Office would take all necessary legal steps to secure his return to the jurisdiction and attendance at the OSP at our own choosing.

By a letter dated 28 May 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers informed the Special Prosecutor that a medical expert has diagnosed Mr. Ofori-Atta with cancer and has earmarked 13 June 2025 for surgery for which reason he would be unable to return to the jurisdiction as scheduled.

His lawyers stated that, to the knowledge of the OSP, this has been brought to the attention of the court before which Mr. Ofori-Atta is presently pursuing a human rights claim against the OSP and the Special Prosecutor.

His lawyers stated further that in order not to hold the Office back in the performance of its function they had Mr. Ofori-Atta’s instructions of his readiness to go through video recorded interview for the purpose of eliciting his caution statement. His lawyers offered to meet the Special Prosecutor in person or approach the bench for the purpose of viewing Mr. Ofori-Atta’s biopsy report – whichever suited the Special Prosecutor.

Now let’s step back a bit from the 28 May 2025 letter from Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers and place matters in their proper context.
The letter from Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers dated 18 February 2025 clearly indicated that the possible surgical intervention to be performed on him was to occur 20/21 March 2025, upon which reckoning the OSP carefully considered the recovery period and indulgently pushed Mr. Ofori Atta’s attendance at the OSP to 2 June 2025.

Therefore, Mr. Ofori-Atta had a duty to promptly inform the OSP of any fundamental change in his medical circumstances on 21 March 2025, when the advertised surgical intervention was not performed – to enable the OSP reschedule a new date of his attendance at the OSP to accommodate any such material changes in his medical condition and treatment itinerary.

Mr. Ofori-Atta has known, at least, since 21 March 2025, that no surgical procedure was to be performed on him in March.

Yet, he purposively sat by indolently and chose not to inform the OSP of such fundamental changes in his circumstances. Instead, about sixty-seven days after learning of the alleged changed circumstances around 21 March 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta elected to spring a surprise on the OSP just six days before his scheduled attendance at the OSP by offering to undergo a video recorded interview and a viewing of his biopsy report.

Back to the 28 May 2025 letter from the lawyers of Mr. Ofori-Atta. By a letter dated 30 May 2025, the OSP declined Mr. Ofori-Atta’s offer of video recorded interview for the purpose of eliciting his caution statement. This Office has always insisted on his personal attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any such statement from Mr. Ofori-Atta in absentia we would have done so in February.

We want him here physically and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative authority should conduct its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance such conduct – not in this case, or in any other case.

Further, the OSP has declined Mr. Ofori-Atta’s invitation to view his biopsy report as we consider it a pointless exercise. This is because it is common learning that a biopsy report contains nothing more than a conclusion, upon the removal and examination of tissue, cells, or fluids from a living body, that some disease or malady was indicated in the samples. A biopsy report is not an expression of a reasoned medical opinion that the subject is an invalid and unable to travel – as Mr. Ofori-Atta seeks to suggest is his condition and for which reason he cannot return to the jurisdiction.

This much is clear – since 24 January 2025 till date, Mr. Ofori-Atta has failed to show any medical report which suggests that he is a travel risk and unable to return to the jurisdiction by reason of his medical condition. It has all been his singular say-so.

Therefore, the OSP views Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers’ letter dated 28 May 2025 as an expression of utter bad faith on the part of

Mr. Ofori-Atta, and it confirms our long-held well-considered opinion and conclusion that Mr. Ofori-Atta has no intention of voluntarily returning to the jurisdiction and to attend the OSP.

Further, this Office is unaware of his purported information to the court, whether orally or by written statement, of the alleged change in his circumstances.

Today is Monday 2 June 2025. It is more than three hours past the scheduled time of Mr. Ofori-Atta’s attendance at the OSP and Mr. Ofori-Atta failed to attend the OSP. Mr. Ofori-Atta’s conduct is totally unacceptable and a baleful spite at law enforcement and criminal investigations.

It ends here. It ends today. We would no longer accommodate him.

Consequently, the OSP re-declares that Mr. Ofori-Atta is a wanted person and a fugitive from justice. His name is hereby re-entered on the OSP’s list of wanted persons.

The OSP would take all necessary legal steps to secure Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return to the jurisdiction and to answer to the criminal enquiries against him.

In pursuance of this, about thirty minutes before this briefing, I triggered processes for the issuance of an INTERPOL Red Notice for the location and provisional arrest of Mr. Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta in whichever jurisdiction pending extradition or surrender.

Around the same time, I dispatched a request for extradition processes to be instituted for the provisional apprehension in any jurisdiction in which Mr. Ofori-Atta may be located or found, and his extradition to the Republic of Ghana.

The OSP would prefer criminal charges in the courts against Mr. Ofori-Atta in due course – whether in absentia or otherwise.
The principle upon which we proceed is that – no person, regardless of title, status, or medical condition, is beyond the reach of inquiry by the OSP.

Mahama calls for transformation of Africa’s mining sector

0

President John Mahama has challenged African nations to transform their mining sectors from mere extraction to value-added industrialisation.

Speaking at the opening of the three-day “Mining in Motion” summit, President Mahama highlighted the paradox of mineral-rich nations remaining among the world’s poorest.

“Africa’s minerals continue to fuel global industries while our people see little benefit. We must shift from exporting raw materials to building refineries, processing plants, and manufacturing capabilities that create jobs and capture value locally”, President Mahama stated.

The President outlined Ghana’s strategic approach to the mining sector reform, highlighting the development of downstream industries for mineral processing, formalising artisanal and small-scale mining operations and implementing strict environmental protections and promoting sustainable practices.

He also mentioned adopting technology for excavator tracking and chemical monitoring, and positioning Ghana as a key player in the global clean energy mineral supply chain.

President Mahama also touched on the global transition to clean energy and the increasing demand for critical minerals like lithium and graphite.

He emphasised Ghana’s readiness to play a central role in this new global landscape, establishing policy, legal, and investment frameworks to explore and develop critical mineral reserves.

The President concluded by emphasising the need for transparency, accountability, and good governance in the mining sector, ensuring that mining revenues benefit all communities and promote development.

In a detailed presentation, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), elaborated on the need for responsible and sustainable artisanal mining practices in Ghana.

He highlighted the challenges posed by illicit mining, including environmental degradation and health implications.

Mr Buah says artisanal and small-scale mining has been a significant sector in Ghana, with over 1 million people engaged in the trade.

However, the sector has been plagued by challenges, including the destruction of water bodies and forests. He cited a recent report that 5,500 hectares of Ghana’s forest reserves had been destroyed.

To address these challenges, the Minister outlined a five-pillar approach to tackle the issue, including reforming the licensing regime, Law enforcement, Provision of Alternative Livelihoods, Stakeholder Engagements, and Reclamation of Degraded Lands with an emphasis on the Tree For Life program, which is set to kick off in June 2025.

He also highlighted the critical need to regulate and monitor the imports and use of excavators and other earth-moving equipment into the country.

Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah also emphasised the importance of community ownership and participation in mining activities.

He noted that large-scale mining companies would be encouraged to extend their best practices to the Small-Scale Mining Cooperatives.

The government would work with stakeholders to create jobs and promote sustainable mining practices.

He concluded by emphasising the need for a mindset shift in the mining sector—from prioritising profits over people and the environment to balancing economic development with social and environmental responsibility.

NPP MPs criticise media house over ‘fake’ doctor’s health show

The Minority Caucus of Parliament has taken on Accra-based GHOne TV, for hosting Dr Ann Sansa Daly, whose appointment to the Governing Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) was recently revoked by President John Dramani Mahama, on their platform.

In a statement addressed to GHOne’s General Manager, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) grilled the media house over laxity in doing due diligence on Dr Sansa Daly’s qualifications before giving her the platform to host a health programme.

The MPs indicated that the media house had serious questions to answer following reports from the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) that she is not a registered or licensed medical practitioner in the country.

The caucus went on to ask the media house the following questions:

What due diligence was conducted by GHOne TV before offering Dr Daly a platform to host a health-related programme?

What documents or credentials did she present to verify her qualifications as a medical professional?

On what basis did the EIB network give the approval for her to air a show that offers medical information and advice to the public, potentially under the guidance of an unlicensed individual?

What steps is GHOne TV taking to address the potential misinformation or professional misconduct associated with this matter?

I used to sell cassettes for Osei Kwame Despite during secondary school – KOD

Kofi Okyere Darko is the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency Kofi Okyere Darko is the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency

Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, Kofi Okyere Darko, popularly known as KOD, has shared his long-standing relationship with Ghanaian business mogul Osei Kwame Despite.

Speaking to Ghhyper at the grand opening of Osei Kwame Despite’s auto museum in East Legon on June 1, 2025, KOD revealed that his relationship with the Despite Media CEO dates back to his teenage years.

KOD shared that while he was in secondary school, he worked for Osei Kwame Despite by selling music CDs and cassettes.

He explained that this experience played a role in shaping his journey into the music and entertainment industry.

“When I was a teenager, I used to sell cassette and I worked from Lumba’s shop and I worked for Despite. That was my secondary school job. My introduction to the music industry and everything, this is part of the story,” KOD said.

He also mentioned that he was one of the early voices expected to join Peace FM when the station was being set up, but due to his existing role at another radio station, he couldn’t take up the opportunity.

“When Peace FM was being established, I was one of the quiet voices that was going to start but I was working at Radio Gold so I couldn’t show my face,” he added.

The event marked the official launch of Osei Kwame Despite’s auto museum, a first-of-its-kind collection showcasing vintage and luxury vehicles.

The museum has a collection of vintage Mercedes-Benz cars, Rolls Royce, Ferraris, a Bugatti, and several other luxury vehicles that are not commonly seen on Ghanaian roads.

With 5 helicopters and guns, I can eliminate galamsey on water bodies in two weeks

0

Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse is the Acting CEO of Environmental Protection Agency Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse is the Acting CEO of Environmental Protection Agency

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has announced bold initiatives to rid water bodies in areas where illegal mining is endemic of recalcitrant miners.

Sharing details of her strategy, she stated that her outfit only needed to be fully equipped with helicopters, firearms, and a clear timeline to eliminate illegal mining activities on water bodies across the country.

“All I need is five helicopters, a couple of guns, and just two weeks to eliminate all those polluting our water bodies. I will clear them all. I just need the resources,” she said on UTV on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Prof Browne Klutse further questioned why the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, is not being treated as a war.

She noted that the government by its actions has waged a war against the menace, but law enforcers are up against heavily armed illegal miners.

She also indicated that forest rangers are not adequately equipped to confront the galamsey operators.

She noted that without adequate resources, law enforcement personnel face greater risk when they come face-to-face with armed miners.

Citing the significant resources spent by authorities to secure military escorts during specialised operations in mining areas – she stated that such operations are costly.

She, however, emphasised that with adequate logistics, the fight against galamsey can be successful and harnessed through a tougher approach to deal with offenders.

“Galamsey has been declared as a war. So, why are we not approaching it as a war? EPA needs resources to go to the war front. The galamseyers are operating on the waterbodies fully armed but EPA staff are not armed. Those engaging in monitoring from the Forestry Commission are also not armed,” she lamented.

“Anytime we go for an operation, we have to go along with the military and National Security which is expensive. How many times can we afford to pay them to go out with us? That is where the problem is. So, we need a comprehensive plan. My vision is to clean up our water bodies, which is heavily contaminated to about 90% . I believe we can fight this much better than we are doing now,” Prof Browne Klutse added.

Raymond Archer’s Rise at EOCO Rekindles Old Rivalries, Puts McDan in the Spotlight

0

Whatsapp Image At

Ghana’s political and business elite are witnessing rising tensions following the recent leadership shakeup at the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), with the appointment of investigative journalist-turned-public servant, Mr. Raymond Archer, as Acting Executive Director.

His new role has stirred speculation, particularly regarding intensified oversight of influential business personalities, including Dr. Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, CEO of the McDan Group of Companies.

The development follows the dramatic arrest of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), which has sparked broader public discourse on whether state institutions are shifting toward more aggressive accountability— or selectively pursuing targets linked to political rivalries.

Archer, formerly News Editor at the Enquirer and more recently EOCO’s Acting Deputy Director, assumed his new role in April 2025 after his predecessor, Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, was reassigned to the National Security Secretariat.

His promotion is widely viewed as a strategic move within the changing political tides, and it arrives at a time when EOCO, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and other state bodies appear more active in demanding transparency from some of Ghana’s top business moguls.

In particular, questions have emerged over EOCO’s posture toward McDan, a powerful entrepreneur whose business empire includes Electrochem Ghana Limited—the continent’s largest salt concession located in Ada—and whose former role as Board Chairman of the Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited led to a controversial chapter in Ghana’s private sector history.

In 2020, a government-backed redevelopment of the Trade Fair site resulted in the demolition of several businesses, including Universal Labels and Packaging Co. Ltd (UNIPACK) and Colour Planet Limited, both owned by Raymond Archer.

While McDan defended the move as a legal step in national redevelopment, Archer publicly labeled it a politically motivated takedown that crushed his thriving businesses.

The long-standing tension between the two men resurfaced in 2023 when Archer, speaking on Radio Gold, ominously remarked, “McDan, he has to pray. I don’t talk too much but he has to pray that his government stays in office forever.”

The narrative escalated in April 2025 when the GRA reportedly requested McDan to submit tax return documents—an action that some interpret as the early stages of a broader investigation.

The timing, just weeks after Archer’s promotion, has led sections of the public to suspect a deliberate effort to hold McDan accountable—or possibly to settle old scores.

Nonetheless, others argue that the state is finally showing signs of institutional strength, asserting the independence of agencies like EOCO to investigate without fear or favor, regardless of business or political influence.

Adding to the pressure on McDan’s enterprises, Electrochem faced a violent attack in January 2025, when unknown assailants believed to be aligned with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) vandalized parts of its Ada concession.

The incident, still under investigation, underscores the volatility surrounding high-stakes business and political interests.

As the dust settles, Ghana finds itself at a crossroads: Will recent moves usher in a new era of transparency and accountability, or are they merely the beginning of an intensified power struggle between influential players on opposing sides of the political divide?

Black Stars Finish Unity Cup Campaign With Dominant 4–0 Win

0

THE BLACK Stars wrapped up their Unity Cup campaign in style with a commanding 4–0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the third-place playoff at the GTech Community Stadium in London on Saturday.

After a narrow 2–1 loss to Nigeria in the semifinals, Coach Otto Addo’s side bounced back with an emphatic performance, showcasing their attacking prowess and depth ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Captain Jordan Ayew opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a superb left-footed strike. Six minutes later, he turned provider, delivering a pinpoint corner that was headed in by Razak Simpson to double Ghana’s lead.

The momentum continued as Mohammed Fuseini added a third just before halftime, finishing neatly after a clever exchange with Ayew in the box.

Otto Addo made several changes in the second half, bringing on Felix Afena-Gyan, Majeed Ashimeru, and Abdul Aziz Issah to maintain the team’s intensity. Midfielder Lawrence Agyekum, starting in place of injured regulars, capped a memorable performance by scoring on his debut in the 58th minute to seal the win.

Trinidad and Tobago made a few late pushes, but Ghana’s defense remained solid, with goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi keeping a clean sheet.

The result offers a major confidence boost for the Black Stars as they prepare for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali in September.

Robbers attack passengers on Kasoa-Winneba Highway

0

Armed robbers have reportedly attacked 10 commercial vehicles and robbed passengers of their belongings on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway.

The incident occurred around 11:00 pm on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Gomoa Potsin in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

The suspects, numbering about seven, blocked the highway while firing indiscriminately, robbing passengers in the process.

They reportedly made away with over 1.7 million CFA, an undisclosed amount of Ghana cedis, mobile phones, and other valuables.

Narrating the ordeal, a resident, Ebo Anderson, told Adom News the robbers had taken advantage of the ongoing road construction along the stretch to carry out their attack.

According to him, the robbers first struck around 11:00 pm and returned again at about 2:00 am. He noted that over five similar cases have been recorded in just two months.

Mr. Anderson has called on the Central Regional Minister, the MP for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, and all relevant agencies to urgently beef up security in the area.

Chairman Wontumi released by EOCO

Chairman Wontumi being mobbed by some party supporters after his release Chairman Wontumi being mobbed by some party supporters after his release

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popular known as Chairman Wontumi has been released by Economic and Organised Crime (EOCO), Monday June 2, 2025.

This comes after he met his bail conditions, with assistance facilitated by Bryan Acheampong, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, who stood as one of the sureties for Chairman Wontumi.

A motion to appeal Wontumi’s GH¢50 million bail condition was formally withdrawn by his legal team on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Originally submitted on May 30, 2025, to the High Court in Accra, the motion was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3. But on Monday, June 2, it was withdrawn one day earlier.

On Wednesday, May 28, two justifiable sureties were added to his bail. The bond requirements were met by Friday, May 30, according to his legal team, which was headed by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi.

His lawyers claimed that the ongoing application for bail review was filed without his express authorization, which is why his release was postponed even though he complied with the requirements.

On Thursday, May 29, members of the minority party demonstrated at EOCO headquarters and staged a walkout from Parliament, calling for his immediate release.

They argued that he ought to have been released on his own recognizance due to his public reputation and little risk of escape.

As part of their protest, NPP supporters also shut down traffic and blocked the road in front of EOCO’s offices.

Now that the motion has been withdrawn and all bail requirements have been met, EOCO has freed Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi has reasonable defence to allegations against him – Lawyer

0

Enoch Afoakwa, a member of the legal team for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi,  has assured that his client has a reasonable defence to respond to any charges that may arise from ongoing investigations.

Wontumi’s legal team on Monday, June 2, formally withdrew a motion that sought a review of his GH¢50 million bail condition. The motion, originally filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30, 2025, was slated for hearing on Tuesday, June 3. However, it was withdrawn a day earlier on Monday, June 2.

He was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with two justified sureties. His legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the bail conditions were fulfilled by Friday, May 30.

Despite meeting the requirements, his release was delayed due to the pending motion for bail review, which, according to his lawyers, was filed without his explicit consent.

But after a gruelling legal efforts, Wontumi’s lawyers have successfully secured his release from detention.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, following Wontumi’s release on Monday, June 2, Enoch Afoakwa reiterated that the legal team is awaiting a formal charge and will respond accordingly.

According to him, the legal team is monitoring developments and will respond once charges are officially filed.

“Every reasonable person facing a law enforcement agency who is diligent in his dealings and believes in his actions has a reasonable defence to the allegations that is being peddled or that has been levelled against him, of which he is being investigated upon.

“This is an aspect that we don’t want to put our cast out. We await the official charge from the law enforcement officers if they really want to proceed on that tangent, then from there we will know what actions we will take,” he stated.

The Government of Ghana has officially launched a landmark renewable energy project aimed at significantly expanding electricity access in some of the country’s most underserved communities.

The event, held at Lala in the Sene East District of the Bono East Region, marked the beginning of the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP), which will provide clean and sustainable electricity to over 70,000 people.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, emphasised the importance of the initiative in transforming rural lives and bridging the energy divide.

“As a Ministry, we are not just installing solar panels or building infrastructure, we are lighting up lives, empowering communities, and bridging the rural-urban energy divide,” he said.

The SREP initiative will see the construction of 35 mini grids and the installation of 1,450 solar home systems across the Bono East, Oti, and Savannah regions.

In addition, 12,000 net-metered rooftop solar PV systems will be installed nationwide to support Ghana’s transition toward a greener energy mix.

Hon. Jinapor acknowledged the resilience of the people in remote communities without electricity who have long awaited connection to the national grid. He called on leaders and residents of the communities to actively participate in the construction and management of the new infrastructure, urging them to take ownership of the project to ensure its long-term success. He urged the contractor to engage the services of the local artisans during the construction of the project.

The Minister also highlighted the broader vision of achieving universal electricity access by 2030, revealing that feasibility studies have already been completed for 150 island and lakeside communities in the Afram Plains, with plans underway to begin construction of 150 new mini grids as part of future development.

“We are confident that by 2030, we will have over 200 mini grids operational, delivering on our last-mile electrification target of 99.8%,” he declared.

Eunice Biritwum (Mrs.) pledged full support and commitment of the Commission to the successful implementation of the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Program (SREP), a flagship government initiative aimed at expanding access to electricity through renewable energy technologies.

She highlighted the crucial role the Commission has played in the development of SREP since its inception in 2013/2014. “The Energy Commission is glad to be associated with the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Programme, which seeks to deploy mini grids and off-grid solutions in non-electrified communities, as well as roof-mounted net-metered solar PV installations in urban and peri-urban areas of Ghana,” the Executive Secretary stated.

Reiterating the Commission’s dedication, the Executive Secretary said, “We support this flagship programme of government in solarising Ghana towards the attainment of the country’s universal energy access goal and renewable energy policy targets.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Volta River Authority (VRA), Ing.

We assure Ghanaians of proper maintenance culture to the highest standards to be able to serve the communities for many years”.

Stonebwoy shares new video for shine

Stonebwoy has shared a new video for “SHINE,” the latest clip off his latest LP UP & RUNNIN6.

Directed by filmmaker Yaw Skyface, “SHINE” arrives as the award-winning Ghanaian great’s eighth UP & RUNNIN6 visual, having previously shared music videos for “JIGGLE & WHINE,” “OVERLORD RMX,” “PRAY FOR ME,” “MEMORIES,” “YOUR BODY,” “EKELEBE,” and “JEJEREJE.”

The visuals for “SHINE” are rich with symbolism and contrast. It opens with Stonebwoy behind the wheel, driving through the night, and transitions into darker, gothic-toned visuals.

Stonebwoy appears in a majestic black suit, seated on a throne in a castle chamber illuminated by a sea of candles. A striking transition from his head to that of a lion reinforces themes of courage and leadership.

“SHINE” profits from prolific Amapiano production while incorporating Stonebwoy’s Afrodancehall elements. The track is laced with slick verses and danceable grooves, but its core message and theme are simple yet profound: resilience, vindication, and confident self-affirmation.

Stonebwoy released UP & RUNNIN6, a bold 13-track album that further explores his signature Afro-Dancehall style while embracing global genres such as Amapiano, Highlife, R&B, and Reggae. The project reflects his ongoing evolution and creative range, featuring artists like Wyclef Jean, Ir Sais, Ginton, Duncan Mighty, Blvk H3ro, Kaylan Arnold, Chi Ching Ching, Amaria BB, Spice, Jahmiel, 10Tik, Larruso, and Odumodublvck.

Tensions have flared outside the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) Headquarters on June 2, 2025, as supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) demanded the immediate release of their embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to a GhanaWeb reporter on the grounds, the protesters, who began gathering earlier in the day, expressed frustration over Wontumi’s continued detention despite his legal team reportedly meeting the GH¢50 million bail conditions set by EOCO.

Chanting slogans and waving party flags, the crowd blocked access roads near the EOCO office, disrupting traffic, while police attempted to clear the obstruction.

NPP leaders at the scene, including MPs and regional executives, urged calm but warned authorities of escalating tensions if Wontumi is not freed. The agitation follows days of protests, including a sit-down protest by the Minority in Parliament and clashes with security forces.

Former vice-president Dr Bawumia visited Chairman Wontumi on May 30

EOCO has yet to publicly address the bail compliance or the protesters’ ultimatum.

Wontumi faces investigations for alleged financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering.

NPP leaders have accused EOCO of political motives, while security officials have cited ongoing international asset recovery probes as reasons for his detention.

Ibrahim Mahama and Sam Jonah inspired my son to enter into mining

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has noted that his son’s resolve to engage in mining was inspired by Ibrahim Mahama and Sir Sam Jonah.

According to him, the two businessmen, who have played major roles in the mining sector, trained his son.

Speaking at the official opening of the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra on June 2, 2025, Otumfuo emphasised the millionaires’ roles in his son’s choice.

“My son, who is organising this Mining in Motion, was trained by his uncle, Sam Jonah, and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama. They trained him, looked after his school and everything. And then I see the reason why he’s into mining is that Ibrahim influenced his job,” he said.

He also noted that Ghana’s longstanding challenge in Ghana has not been the lack of natural resources, but rather the inability to fully capitalise on them in the competitive global market.

“Probably the most costly effect of illicit mining to me is the distraction from the real challenge we face, which is how we maximise the benefits of our noble heritage. We have to be true to ourselves and admit that we have not done a good job of representing and protecting ourselves in the competitive global market,” the Asantehene stated.

In his remarks, the Asantehene praised Sammy Gyamfi for his work at the Ghana GoldBod, noting that his efforts are helping shift the focus from reactive responses to illegal mining toward proactive strategies that secure long-term value from Ghana’s mineral wealth.

Ghana’s Youngest Referee Making Her Mark In Football

0

Asomaniwaa Akoto Akrofi

AT JUST seven years old, Asomaniwaa Akoto Akrofi is already breaking boundaries in Ghana’s football scene.

A pupil of Pentecost Preparatory School, Asomaniwaa recently made headlines when she officiated matches during the FIFA Women’s Football Campaign held at Koforidua Technical University’s group stage.

What sets Asomaniwaa apart isn’t just her age, but the confidence and composure she brings to the pitch, qualities many referees twice her age work hard to master.

Despite picking up the whistle only a few months ago, she has embraced her new role with remarkable enthusiasm and maturity.

Her love for refereeing, she says, was sparked by watching her older brother play football. Inspired to be part of the game in her own unique way, Asomaniwaa chose to pursue officiating, a bold decision that is quickly turning heads.

With determination in her stride and the support of her family and school, this rising star is already showing signs of greatness.

Asomaniwaa’s story is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier when passion meets opportunity.

Many are now watching with keen interest to see how far this young trailblazer will go in the world of football officiating.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako a.k.a Chairman Wontumi, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), five days after securing a bail.

That was after Chairman Wontumi, who is under investigation on suspicion of multiple criminal offences including fraud, money laundering and causing financial loss to the state, successfully executed his bail condition set by the investigative body.

With his release, the suspect will now assist with investigations from home and is expected to make himself available as and when he is needed.

Background

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service had earlier on Tuesday, invited Mr Boasiako to assist with ongoing investigations linked to alleged illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

He had previously been cautioned over accusations of mining without a licence, activities that are polluting water bodies and encroachment of forest reserves.

However, after honouring the CID’s invitation, he was subsequently picked up by EOCO officials and transported to their head office for further questioning, reportedly on related issues.

In a post on social media last Thursday (May 29) the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai  said Chairman Wontumi was under investigation for multiple criminal offences including fraud, money laundering and causing financial loss to the state.

According to the Deputy A-G, the ongoing criminal investigation is running concurrently with asset recovery efforts to prevent the suspected proceeds of crime from being dissipated.

He also gave a hint of a second strand of investigations involving Chairman Wontumi’s alleged role in a larger international organised crime scheme.

EOCO is said to be working closely with international law enforcement partners in this regard, he indicated.

Chairman Wontumi has already spent five nights in custody for failing to meet the bail condition of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified.

Offset Seemingly Reacts to Cardi B Going Instagram Official With NFL Player Stefon Diggs

Offset is raising eyebrows for his erratic social media posts after ex Cardi B went Instagram official with NFL player Stefon Diggs.

In a series of social media posts, the Migos rapper, 33, seemingly reacted to his estranged wife hard-launching her relationship with the New England Patriots player.

“Good roll out n PR,” Offset reportedly wrote via X on Sunday, June 1, before deleting the post.

He followed up the initial comment with a gif of someone throwing a basketball with the words “TODAY I PASS” on top. That post has also since been deleted. (Us has reached out to Offset’s team for comment.)

Diggs, 31, appeared unbothered by the comments when he shared a black-and-white photo of himself catching a football on his Instagram Stories.

Over the weekend, Cardi B, 32, got the internet talking when she shared a PDA-filled snap of herself and Diggs within an Instagram carousel.

One photo showed Cardi B draping a leg across Diggs as the NFL star snuggled in and gazed into her eyes onboard a yacht. Other pictures showed the Grammy winner receiving dozens upon dozens of red roses and some brand-new bling. (It’s unclear if Diggs gifted her the fabulous presents.)

Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for iHeartRadio

The post comes days after the “I Like It” rapper shared what she claimed to be the financial cost of raising her three children. (She shares Kulture, 6, Wave, 3, and Blossom, 8 months, with her ex Offset.)

“Y’all want to know what’s the kids’ bills? Start adding,” she shared via X Spaces on Friday, May 30. “My kids got their own driver. The kids’ driver is on a retainer for $10,000 a month. Kulture and Wave gets tutoring four times a week. Kulture’s piano class — that’s $300 an hour, and she gets piano classes three times a week. I’m not sure how much is gymnastics and Wave’s boxing classes, but I pay for that, too.”

Cardi B went on to accuse her ex of not pitching in financially as they continue navigating their divorce. (Us previously reached out to Offset’s rep for comment.)

Cardi B previously filed for divorce in August 2024, one day before she confirmed her pregnancy with their third child.

While she may be facing drama with her ex, Cardi B is trying to savor any and all quality time with Diggs. The pair were photographed sitting courtside together at a New York Knicks game on May 12.

Although Diggs hasn’t publicly commented on his relationship status, he made it to the New England Patriots’ voluntary organized team activity in Massachusetts on Monday, June 2.

According to ESPN, he arrived on the field ready for practice and waved to reporters saying, “Nice to see you all.”

Chief Imam Calls For Peace, Love

0

Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu sent felicitations to Muslims ahead of Eid-al-Adha, which falls on Friday, June 6, 2025.

He also extends to the entire humanity a message of peace and love, unity and reconciliation, sacrifice and compromise, as the world currently faces unprecedented challenges of multiple dimensions.

As the name suggests, His Eminence observes, Eid-al-Adha is a festivity of sacrifice and an opportunity to reaffirm our faith in Allah.

That is why he made reference in his statement to the Holy Quran which states in Chapter 22 Verse 37 – that He is not interested in the flesh and blood of the animals sacrificed on the day of the Eid, but in our commitment to piety.

The Chief Imam reminded Muslims that Eid-al-Adha is not only a period of celebration but also that of reflection. He explained that the virtues of the Eid are fruitless unless they have the capacity to guarantee attitudinal cleansing and moral ascendancy in our society.

This, according to him, calls for a behavioural change from negativity to positivity in the supreme interest of the society.

Eid-al-Adha, he went on, constitutes the moral basis of interfaith harmony, particularly among the Abrahamic fraternity.

Justifying his assertion, he referred to the Divine Order to Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as the genesis of Eid-al-Adha. This, in the words of His Eminence, is the point of convergence of all the Abrahamic religions.

The Grand Imam, therefore, called on members of the Abrahamic family to regard the Eid as another opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to interfaith harmony.

His Eminence contends that in the darkness of socio-religious adversity, interfaith harmony serves as the light that brightens the path to prosperity.

On the global stage, His Eminence points out, in dismay, the myriad of threats confronting humanity – from genocidal impunity to moral bankruptcy.

He called for an end to the atrocities in Gaza and in other areas of conflict in the world. We cannot surrender our God-given humanity to modern-day barbarity in the name of supremacy, he cautioned.

The Noble Imam concluded on a note of appeal to world leaders to review the current global order to reflect the centrality of right over might, unity over disunity, forgiveness over vindictiveness, reconciliation over aggression, and peace over violence.

The Future Is African: Investing In Youth, Innovation, And Sustainability

0

The writer

As Ghana joins the rest of the continent to mark African Union Day, we are reminded of how far we have come, and how much potential still lies ahead. This year’s commemoration should not only honour the vision of African unity, but also sharpen our focus on the continent’s greatest assets – its people, its ideas, and its resilience.

In recent years, the phrase “The Future is African” has grown in popularity. Beyond the slogan lies a compelling truth. Africa is young, dynamic, and increasingly self-determined. From the energy of her youth to the creativity of her innovators and the urgency of her sustainability journey, the future of Africa will be shaped by young Africans, and that journey has already begun.

A youthful continent on the rise

Africa is home to the youngest population in the world. With a median age of just under 20, our continent is bursting with ambition, talent, and creativity. Here in Ghana, the energy of our young people pulses through every corner of the economy, from bustling tech hubs in Accra to farms in the Upper East, from digital content creators to fashion entrepreneurs carving out a name for themselves on the global stage.

Yet, the promise of a youthful population is not guaranteed. It demands deliberate investment in education, skills development, mentorship, and opportunity. It requires public and private sectors to create pathways where talent is not only discovered but nurtured and empowered. In communities where young people are given the tools to lead, they do not wait for change, they become it. The future of Africa will be written by the hands of its youth. But we must give them pens, not just paper.

Innovation is our inheritance

Africa is not new to innovation. Long before the word became a buzzword, African communities had their own systems of problem-solving rooted in adaptation, community, and resourcefulness. Today, that spirit of innovation has only been amplified with technology. In Ghana, we are witnessing a generation that is leapfrogging limitations. Mobile money has revolutionized financial inclusion. Agritech solutions are helping farmers improve yield and access markets. Healthtech platforms are closing the gap between rural communities and quality care. These innovations are not imported, they are African-born, designed for African realities.

But innovation requires an enabling environment: access to capital, mentorship, digital infrastructure, and policies that encourage experimentation. If Africa is to compete globally, we must treat innovation not as a luxury but as a necessity, especially for young people whose ideas often emerge from lived experiences.

Sustainable Africa is a stronger Africa

Perhaps the most urgent opportunity and challenge facing the continent today is the need for sustainable development. Climate change, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity are not distant threats; they are present realities, especially for those whose livelihoods depend directly on the land and the sea.

Yet in adversity lies opportunity. Across Africa, young leaders are driving green innovation, from renewable energy start-ups to eco-friendly fashion, sustainable farming to recycling ventures. These are not fringe movements, they are the foundations of a new African economy, one that is both forward-looking and planet-conscious.

In Ghana, the rise of green entrepreneurship and climate advocacy among the youth signals a shift in how we think about progress. Sustainability is no longer just about conservation; it’s about survival, dignity, and building an Africa that will thrive for generations.

Building the future we want

African Union Day should be more than a celebration. It ought to be a moment of reflection and responsibility. It invites us to ask the question, “What kind of Africa are we building? And who are we building it for?”

The answers lie not in distant capitals or borrowed models, but right here, in the ideas of a young innovator in Tamale, in the voice of a climate activist in Ada, and in the determination of a woman-led enterprise in Kumasi. The answers lie in our classrooms, our communities, and in the everyday choices we make as citizens. The future is African. Not because the rest of the world says so, but because we are shaping it ourselves with urgency, with hope, and with a deep unwavering sense of purpose.

On this African Union Day, let us recommit to investing in what truly matters, our people, our ideas, and our planet. Because the future isn’t just coming. It is already here. And it is African.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has once again declared former Finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, a wanted person after he failed to honour an in-person invitation for questioning.

According to him, Ofori-Atta’s continued absence and noncompliance had exhausted the OSP’s patience, especially after efforts to accommodate his legal team’s request for a virtual session due to his medical treatment abroad.

“This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025,” Kissi Agyebeng emphasizsed.

The former minister’s legal team had earlier submitted documentation to the OSP and the Human Rights Court explaining that he was undergoing medical treatment overseas.

However, the OSP insists that Ken Ofori-Atta must be physically present to assist with investigations concerning alleged financial misconduct, including money laundering and causing financial loss to the state.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case,” the Special Prosecutor stated.

He added that Ofori-Atta is being investigated for several acts of corruption during his time as Minister of Finance.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has officially triggered a process for the issuance of an INTERPOL red notice, potentially subjecting former  Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to international arrest and extradition.

The move, announced at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, June 2, comes after Mr. Ofori-Atta failed to honour multiple invitations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for questioning in relation to ongoing corruption investigations.

“About 30 minutes before this brief, I triggered processes for the issuance of an INTERPOL red notice for the location and provisional arrest of Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta in whichever jurisdiction, pending extradition or his surrender,” the Special Prosecutor revealed.

In addition, the embattled former minister has also been reinstated on the OSP’s list of wanted persons and officially declared a fugitive from justice.

Mr. Ofori-Atta is under investigation for alleged corruption-related offences during his tenure as Finance Minister.

  • 31 January 2025
His lawyers informed the OSP that he was abroad indefinitely for medical reasons and offered to represent him in his absence.

  • 5 February 2025
The OSP rejected the claim of indefinite absence and demanded a firm return date by 10 February 2025, warning of legal consequences. It also reminded that legal representatives cannot respond to criminal charges on behalf of clients.

  • 10 February 2025
His lawyers submitted a doctor’s note (not addressed to any specific party), indicating he was undergoing tests and possibly surgery, with no clear return date.

  • 12 February 2025

Legal Challenge

  • March 2025
Mr. Ofori-Atta filed a lawsuit against the OSP and the Special Prosecutor, seeking compensation for what he described as an unlawful declaration of him as wanted. He also requested the removal of related content from the OSP’s social media platforms.

  • 28 March 2025
The Human Rights Court heard an interim application from Mr. Ofori-Atta, asking the court to restrain the OSP from declaring him wanted again.

Chairman Wontumi released by EOCO after meeting bail conditions

0

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after successfully meeting his bail conditions.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua, confirmed his release on the evening of Monday, June 2, in an interview with the media.

He commended the NPP’s Dr Bryan Acheampong, who provided one of the sureties for Chairman Wontumi’s release.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail to the tune of GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified following his arrest on Tuesday, May 27, in connection with ongoing investigations into alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

The charges also include a potential link to a wider international organised crime syndicate, as revealed by the Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai.

It has emerged that the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is also preparing its own docket as part of the ongoing investigations into Chairman Wuntomi’s activities, independent from ongoing EOCO and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) probes.

His release follows a period of intense legal manoeuvring and political pressure.

Initially, Wontumi’s legal team struggled to meet the hefty bail terms, leading to days in detention.

However, his lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed on Friday, May 30, that the necessary documentation for both sureties had been completed, significantly aided by former Minister for Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, whose documents reportedly “go over and above the value of money that is required”.

Despite meeting the bail conditions on Friday, Wontumi’s release was delayed by an unexpected “legal challenge” – an application filed to seek a review of the bail conditions.

His lawyers were optimistic this hurdle would be cleared by Monday, June 2.

The application has since been withdrawn to pave the way for his release.

Throughout his detention, the case garnered significant political attention, with NPP Members of Parliament and party executives, along with many supporters, staging protests and demanding his release, describing the bail conditions as excessive and politically motivated.

The application to review the bail conditions was scheduled to be heard June 3, 2025, but the applicant made a U-turn Monday, withdrawing the application from the court entirely.

While released, Chairman Wontumi is expected to cooperate fully with the ongoing probe as part of his bail terms.

Wontumi finally released by EOCO

0

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) following after meeting his bail conditions.

His legal team, led by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the bail conditions were fulfilled by Friday, May 30.

Despite meeting the requirements, his release was delayed due to the pending motion for bail review, which, according to his lawyers, was filed without his explicit consent.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua a while ago announced the release of the embattled NPP Regional Chairman at the EOCO headquarters.

“I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released, he’s gone home to relax, we will inform you of any new development. Let’s thank Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi for the support,” he told journalists at EOCO Monday evening.

The continued detention of Wontumi sparked political unrest. On Thursday, May 29, Minority Members of Parliament staged a walkout from Parliament and protested at EOCO headquarters, demanding his immediate release. They argued that, given his public standing and minimal flight risk, he should have been granted bail on self-recognition.

Supporters of the NPP also took to the streets, blocking the road in front of EOCO’s offices and halting vehicular movement as part of the protest.

With the withdrawal of the motion and all bail conditions satisfied, EOCO has now released Chairman Wontumi.

The controversial Founder and leader of Heaven Way Chapel, Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, once again drew attention to herself following a video of her that has gone viral on social media.

In the video captured by GhanaWeb on June 2, 2025, at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) Headquarters, Agradaa was seen together with her husband, Asiamah, entering the compound.

In the video, Agradaa is dressed in a golden outfit, while her husband is dressed in an all-black suit.

The excited Agradaa was seen surrounded by media personnel as she made a grand-style entrance to the EOCO office.

Meanwhile, Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since May 28, 2025, in connection with several criminal allegations, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Although he has been granted bail set at GH¢50 million, his legal team has yet to satisfy the conditions required for his release.

EOCO’s decision to keep him in custody has stirred political debates, particularly with Minority Members of Parliament claiming the detention is politically motivated.

Victory Bible Church International Celebrates 40 Years of Impact And God’s Manifold Goodness

0

Right Reverend Nii Nabi Nii Apiakai Tackie-Yarboi

On June 2, 1985, exactly 40 years ago t oday, Victory Bible Church International (VBCI), now one of the leading Charismatic and Pentecostal churches in Ghana, was born with the mandate to “Raise the Foundations of Many Generations.”

VBCI, under the leadership of the Founder and Presiding Bishop, Right Reverend Nii Nabi Nii Apiakai Tackie-Yarboi, held its maiden Church service on June 2, 1985, at Kokomlemle, a suburb of Accra. Over the past 40 years, it has expanded to more than ten countries in four continents (Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe).

The Church currently has over 175 branches in Ghana alone, and its administrative office employs over 50 permanent staff members and several hundred non-permanent staff members. The ministry has 30 consecrated bishops globally who preside over the churches’ 39 global provinces. In all, VBCI has 250 local branches known as sanctuaries.

The mission of VBCI is “Raising the Foundations of Many Generations,” anchored on the verse of scripture in the book of Isaiah chapter 58:12, which states, “And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.”

ANNIVERSARY LAUNCH

On Sunday, 26 January 2025, at its headquarters church, Dominion Sanctuary, in Accra, the church launched the 40th anniversary celebration and unveiled the anniversary logo. Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, Bishop Tackie-Yarboi said that over the last 40 years and under his leadership, VBCI had been able to sustain the ministry by the Grace of God and by ensuring that it not only focuses on the spiritual needs of its members but also their physical well-being.

He noted that the church is both an organization and an organism. While the organism focuses on spiritual things, the organization has paid attention to the members’ material and physical needs, which has gone a long way in keeping the church united and vibrant.

“One of the things we do not play with is the organizational dimension. If you see churches struggling, they have underrated the organizational dimension, which deals with putting the soul and body together. If you teach people how to go to heaven and not how to survive here on earth, it will be tough for them,” Bishop Tackie-Yarboi remarked.

CELEBRATION ACTIVITIES

A series of events will mark the 40th anniversary celebrations, including a conference featuring renowned international speakers, outdoor crusades/street evangelism, a musical concert showcasing gospel artists from VBCI and other ministries, community outreach programs and charity events, a health walk, and a health screening.

There will also be church commemorative projects (specific communities with Branch Churches would be identified for particular projects like classroom blocks with all the necessary supporting facilities, boreholes, and clinic renovations as needed.

Others include Youth-centric events that will be organized to create a unique platform for young people to know their worth, receive guidance to prepare for leadership and thrive, create a safe space to address their challenges, and know their contribution is appreciated. The 40th anniversary will be climaxed with a week-long international gathering known as the “Wonderful Jesus Conference” in October 2025.

ABOUT VBCI

Victory Bible Church International is a vibrant and dynamic Charismatic Christian commission headquartered in Accra, Ghana. The Church is founded on biblical principles and aims to spread the message of hope, love, and redemption through Jesus Christ.

Through the leadership of the Presiding Bishop Nii Nabi Nii Apiakai Tackie-Yarboi, the Ministry has become a beacon of hope and spiritual guidance, serving millions in Ghana and abroad.

As a commission, VBCI is committed to equipping our members to be rooted in God’s Word so that they will not be deceived but faithful disciples of Jesus who can raise other firm believers. The overarching objective is empowering believers to become Jesus Christ’s disciples, fostering spiritual growth, community service, and evangelism.

VBCI envisions a transformed Ghana and beyond through strong generations of dedicated and obedient Christian families, where the gospel impacts individuals, families, and communities, and they live out their faith in practical ways.

Ken Ofori-Atta declared wanted again by OSP

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has once again declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted person after he failed to appear in person before the office as directed.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, in a stern notice issued on Monday, June 2, stated that its patience with Mr. Ofori-Atta has run out, following what it describes as repeated delays and noncompliance with ongoing criminal proceedings against him.

“This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case.”

This development comes after Mr. Ofori-Atta reportedly requested a virtual session, citing medical reasons. His legal team had earlier submitted documentation to the OSP and the Human Rights Court, explaining that he was undergoing treatment abroad and unable to travel.

However, the OSP maintains that Mr. Ofori-Atta must appear in person to respond to ongoing investigations related to alleged financial misconduct, including money laundering and causing financial loss to the state.

The declaration reinstates Mr. Ofori-Atta on the list of wanted persons and opens the door for further international enforcement actions, including a possible INTERPOL Red Notice.

More details soon…

Frontline Ghana: How AFRICOM’s new strategy puts West Africa at the heart of global security

0

A GNA Feature by James Amoh Junior

Accra, June 02, GNA – A new war is unfolding across Africa. It is not fought only with guns and drones, but with ideas, alliances, and resolve.

At its centre stands Ghana — no longer a silent observer, but a key player in a fast-changing global security equation.

“Terrorist networks affiliated with ISIS and al-Qaida are thriving…One of the terrorists’ new objectives is gaining access to West Africa coasts,” warns U.S. Marine Corps General Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).

The warning comes not with sirens, but with the calm authority of a seasoned commander. Yet the urgency in General Langley’s voice was unmistakable.

From his post in Nairobi, where the Africa Chiefs of Defense Conference had just concluded, the U.S. AFRICOM chief looked squarely at the threat facing the continent — and the world.

Africa’s coastlines, once seen as trade gateways and economic lifelines, are now being eyed by terrorist networks as launchpads for transnational crime and global reach. And in that shadowy race for control, Ghana is no longer a bystander — it is a bulwark.

What is unfolding is not just a battle of arms, but a contest of wills, governance, and vision. Ghana’s position as a regional peace anchor is being tested by the creeping chaos from the north — by militants who move faster than borders can hold and who exploit every weakness, from poverty to political instability.

But in this fight, something remarkable is happening: the frontline is not folding — it is holding. And increasingly, it is African-led.

“African militaries are taking on security challenges head-on. They continue to step up and take control of their own futures.” General Langley says during a digital press briefing.

Ghana on the frontline

As instability deepens in the Sahel — with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger struggling to contain extremist violence — Ghana and its fellow Gulf of Guinea nations are being drawn into the vortex. But rather than folding under pressure, these nations are standing firm.

“Our coastal partners – Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin – are fighting fiercely along their northern borders to prevent terrorist expansion and U.S. AFRICOM is standing with them.” General Langley states.

Ghana has long been seen as a beacon of democratic stability in West Africa. Now, that credibility is being tested on the security front.

The growing threat from the Sahel’s jihadist groups is not theoretical. These groups are expanding, regrouping, and seeking new financial lifelines.

General Langley explains that the coastlines are becoming prime targets. “If they secure access to the coastline, they can finance their operations through smuggling, human trafficking, and arms trading.

This puts not just African nations at risk, but also increases the chance of threats reaching the U.S. shores.”

Ghana’s location, leadership, and proactive stance in regional defense collaborations have made it a keystone partner in AFRICOM’s evolving strategy — one centred not on foreign-led interventions, but African command and control.

From assistance to partnership

General Langley’s remarks reflects a dramatic shift in how the United States engages African militaries.

Gone is the era of dependency and donor-recipient dynamics. In its place, AFRICOM now champions a doctrine of readiness, regional leadership, and self-sufficiency.

“We’re always stronger when we stand together.” Gen. Langley remarks, and adds, “But all these exercises… are no longer about dependence. It’s about progressing to independent operations.”

Exercises like African Lion, Flintlock, and Justified Accord — along with maritime drills such as Obangame Express — are now structured to foster operational autonomy among African forces. Ghana has often served as a host or key contributor to these engagements.

Gen. Langley notes, “These exercises are about building interoperability among nations…So crisis response and command-level leadership can be driven from within African militaries.”

This year’s Justified Accord, co-hosted by Kenya, Djibouti, and Tanzania, brought together over 1,300 troops from 20 nations.

The goal was not just joint maneuvers, but to sharpen real-world readiness, leadership coordination, and crisis management — a model Gen. Langley believes Ghana is well placed to replicate and expand.

AFRICOM’s strategy aligns well with Ghana’s own approach: Investing in professional military education, building intelligence capacity, and maintaining close civil-military relations.

“AFRICOM’s aim is to support African nations in building the self-reliance needed to confront terrorism and insurgency by assisting in building strong, capable military and security forces.” Gen. Langley emphasised.

Security beyond the battlefield

In perhaps the most telling moment of the briefing, Langley shifted the conversation from weapons to people.

“Security is rooted in the strength of communities,” he stresses and that “Militaries must therefore be deeply integrated into society writ large to ensure safety and prosperity.”

He shared his experience in Kibera, Nairobi, where he met with SHOFCO — a grassroots organisation led by Dr. Kennedy Odede that empowers communities through education, health services, and women’s leadership.

Operating in over 40 counties, SHOFCO is proof, Langley says, that real security begins with social stability.

“That’s the model of how real security starts at the ground level – with the people,” he adds.

The message resonates in Ghana, where community-led initiatives, religious networks, and civic organisations have played a quiet but powerful role in fostering peace, especially in border regions.

For AFRICOM, these local actors are no longer side players — they are central to long-term peacebuilding.

Gen. Langley’s reference to a “whole-of-society” approach signals a broader philosophy: that stability doesn’t come from foreign bases or firepower alone, but from education, inclusion, and trusted local institutions.

Strategic tensions and African sovereignty

While AFRICOM’s recalibration favours cooperation, it also comes with strategic caution.

General Langley acknowledged the evolving geopolitical landscape influencing Africa’s security environment, highlighting the importance of strategic engagement on the continent.

He notes, “One of my key directives from Secretary Hegseth is to ensure a balanced approach to military engagement in Africa, mindful of the increasing presence of global powers, including China.”

Gen. Langley adds, “While the U.S. remains committed to fostering transparent and mutually respectful partnerships, it is essential to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to promote sustainable development and long-term stability across the region.”

Careful not to frame the conversation as a zero-sum rivalry, General Langley, instead, implied that African nations — Ghana among them — must retain the sovereign right to choose partnerships that prioritize sustainability, transparency, and mutual respect.

His tone throughout the press briefing was clear: AFRICOM does not seek to dominate, but to stand beside. “It’s about empowering African nations to solve African problems, not just through handouts but through trusted cooperation.”

The power of youth

The briefing concluded on a hopeful note — one anchored not in military metrics, but in human potential, as Gen. Langley spoke of young Africans shaping their future through innovation, not insurgency.

“In Algeria, I met with a youth robotics team applying technology to solve local problems. In Gabon, I saw students enrolled in STEM programmes planning their projects for the future. That is proof that African innovation will be a force of stability.”

He recounted conversations with cadets at Morocco’s military academy and meetings with aspiring leaders in Mauritania and Nigeria. Their passion, he says, is the most powerful counterweight to extremism — and the best bet for Africa’s stability.

For Ghana, where innovation hubs and youth-led civic movements are growing, this is fertile ground for collaboration.

Ghana’s strategic moment

As General Langley prepares to step down — with a successor expected soon — his final message to African partners was filled with both urgency and trust.

“A safe and stable and prosperous Africa is not a charitable goal,” he declares and states that, “It is a strategic necessity for the United States and for our African partners.”

In that vision, Ghana’s role is pivotal. The country is no longer just a reliable partner — it is emerging as a model of military professionalism, democratic stability, and regional responsibility.

As terrorist networks adapt, borders shift, and global power dynamics evolve, Ghana is being asked not only to hold the line — but to lead it.

“AFRICOM will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with African partners into the future.
And I am excited to see Africa’s emerging leaders drive progress not just across the continent but across the world.” Gen. Langley acknowledges.

The battle for Africa’s future will not be decided in Washington or Beijing. It will be shaped by the choices, capabilities, and convictions of its own people — and Ghana, now more than ever, is poised to help shape that destiny.

Olympic champion Imane Khelif barred from World Boxing events pending sex test

Imane Khelif has been banned by the World Boxing Federation Imane Khelif has been banned by the World Boxing Federation

Algerian Olympic gold medalist, Imane Khelif, has been barred from competing in the female category at World Boxing events until she undergoes a mandatory sex test, according to the sport’s global governing body.

The 26-year-old recently made history by winning gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, competing under the eligibility rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which state that an athlete is eligible to compete in the women’s division if their passport identifies them as female.

However, World Boxing Federation, the new organisation recognised by the IOC in place of the stripped International Boxing Association (IBA), are enforcing their gender eligibility regulations.

They have confirmed that Khelif must now undergo medical testing before she can take part in any of their sanctioned female competitions.

Khelif was previously disqualified from the 2023 IBA World Championships after reportedly failing gender eligibility tests under the IBA’s rules.

She was later cleared by the IOC to compete in Paris, where she won Algeria’s first Olympic boxing gold.

The discrepancy between the IOC’s standards and those of World Boxing highlights an ongoing divide in how sporting bodies handle sex and gender classification — an issue expected to remain in focus after the Paris Games.

World Boxing has not released details on the timeline for Khelif’s eligibility review, and the boxer has yet to publicly respond to the new decision.

Voices In Worship Discharges 17 Mothers, Babies From Weija Hospital

0

The choir members during a visit to one of the wards

Voices in Worship, the youth choir of Royalhouse Chapel International, Ahenfie, has discharged 17 mothers and their babies from the Weija Municipal Hospital under its flagship initiative dubbed, “Baba Project.”

The choir covered medical bills totaling GH¢23,000, enabling their discharge and supported a 48-year-old woman, who lost her womb due to pregnancy complications, with an amount of GH¢1,500 as medical bills to aid her recovery.

The choir also shared a time of fellowship with the beneficiaries through prayers and sharing of the word of God.

Pastor-in-Charge of Voices In Worship, Rev. Albert Nii Tettey Ayittey, speaking with the media said the project, with considerable backing from the church’s founder and leader, the Apostle General, Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah, and his wife, Rev. Mrs. Rita Korankye-Ankrah, seeks to bring relief to mothers who have been kept in hospitals due to unpaid bills.

“The project, initiated in 2011 and now in its 14th year, aims to bring Christ, provide financial assistance, and highlight facility needs to attract support,” he said.

He, however, said that the choir was able to provide support to about 50 percent of its target, indicating that moving forward, the choir will expand its efforts to address all the cases they identify at the hospital.

“We realised that almost every year we have never had zero incidents before, we go in and we come back with something that we are unable to attend. So what we are going to do is that now we know the full complement with regards to the problems in that place, so we are going to start now so that we’ll enter in and make sure that we leave the place, covering everybody,” he stated.

He used the opportunity to thank the church and the members of the choir for supporting the vision. “Well, for this amount of money being raised by these young people, I cannot but to express my sincere appreciation to them,” he said.

Medical Superintendent of the Weija Municipal Hospital, Dr. David Kwabena Okoh, said the maternity department, which serves a large catchment area, faces significant challenges including unpaid bills by patients.

“Non-payment of bills is a significant problem, with patients needing essential items like diapers and sanitary towels. The department relies on donations and support from organisations like Royalhouse Chapel to clear bills and maintain essential supplies,” he said.

He also called for additional support from philanthropists, organisations, and corporate entities to improve facilities and provide medical equipment to enhance care for mothers and newborns.

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, played a key role in persuading him to accept the role of running mate to the late President John Evans Atta Mills ahead of the 2008 general elections.

Speaking at the Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, June 2, when the Asantehene paid a courtesy call on him, Mahama recounted how he initially declined multiple approaches from the Mills campaign team to become the vice-presidential candidate, explaining that he had intended to step away from active politics.

“The first time Prof. Mills sent Baffoe-Bonnie of blessed memory, and a team to tell me he wanted me to be his running mate, I said no. I had already made up my mind to leave politics,” Mahama said.

He added that even after additional pressure from key party stalwarts, including Ato Ahwoi, Totobi Quakyi, and Kwamena Ahwoi, he still refused the offer.

However, things took a decisive turn after a call from Manhyia Palace.

“One day, while I was in Accra, I got a call that Otumfuo wanted to see me in Manhyia. Who was I to refuse?” Mahama narrated. “When I arrived, he asked, ‘Are you the one refusing to be Prof. Mills’ running mate? You can’t do that. When your country calls you, you must respond.’”

Otumfuo, drawing from his own experience of being called to lead the Asante Kingdom, stressed the importance of answering the national call to duty. He even assured Mahama that he would personally deliver his final decision to President Mills, who was then in South Africa.

“Otumfuo said, ‘I promised President Mills that I would speak to you. When I return to Accra, I want your final answer.’ And when he came back, I told him I had agreed—though I made it clear I was willing to serve for only one term,” Mahama recounted.

Mahama’s eventual acceptance paved the way for his selection as Mills’ running mate in the 2008 elections, a partnership that led to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning power.

“So yes, Otumfuo was instrumental in me becoming Prof. Mills’ running mate, and everything after that became history. Your Majesty, thank you very much and I truly appreciate your friendship,” Mahama said.

From Summit Stage to Psychiatric Wards: Wholesome Mind Xperience Turns Talk into Action.

Mental health influences every aspect of our lives—from how we think and feel to how we connect with others and navigate challenges. Yet in Ghana, mental health remains one of the most overlooked areas of public well-being. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes mental health as a basic human right and an essential foundation for thriving communities. Still, over 2.3 million Ghanaians live with mental health conditions, often with little or no access to proper care.

VINT & Aletheia Attorneys and Consultants, a top-tier law firm ranked by Legal 500 and IFLR1000, has stepped into this gap with a purpose-driven CSR initiative: The Wholesome Mind. The initiative is designed to foster awareness, encourage dialogue, and inspire action in support of mental well-being.

A Movement in Motion: From Awareness to Impact

The Wholesome Mind began in 2024 with a powerful summit focused on Mental Health in the Workplace, organized in collaboration with major mental health institutions. The summit sparked vital conversations among professionals, employers, and advocates about building healthier, more supportive environments.

This October, the initiative expands into its next chapter: The Wholesome Mind Xperience—an immersive, community-centered event under the theme: Mental Health in Our Community: Children and Adults. Attendees will experience a blend of expert-led discussions, wellness activities, and reflective spaces aimed at strengthening emotional resilience at every stage of life.

More than an event, the Xperience marks the beginning of a larger movement—one that goes beyond raising awareness to delivering real, measurable change.

The Xperience Project Launch: A Bold Step Toward Restoring Dignity

A major highlight of this year’s Wholesome Mind Xperience is the official launch of The Xperience Project—a nationwide initiative focused on renovating the Special Ward at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

Demonstrating its commitment, VINT & Aletheia has provided initial seed funding to jumpstart the campaign. Now, the firm is calling on individuals, corporate bodies, development partners, and the Ghanaian diaspora to be part of this transformative journey.

The vision is to create a space that offers dignity, comfort, and healing—one that truly honors the humanity of every patient. This goes beyond a fundraising effort; it’s a call to collectively reshape the landscape of mental health care in Ghana.

Together, we are redefining what support looks like—where mental health is not only spoken about, but actively respected, resourced, and protected.

I want to leave my relationship but I’m scared I will go mad

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I am a 23-year-old woman currently dating a 49-year-old man. We’ve been together for over five years. Throughout this time, I have never cheated on him or considered being with anyone else.

It’s not that I don’t sometimes wish to date someone younger or even marry someone closer to my age, but this man supported me through senior high school and has continued to support me financially throughout university. I’m now in my final year.

He waited until I finished SHS before we became intimate. He provides for me generously, I never lack anything. He was previously married but is now divorced with three children, whom he never involves me with.

Now, he’s planning to marry me after I graduate, but I don’t want that. I feel like I don’t have a choice.

Early in our relationship, he made me swear an oath using eggs and other ritual items which he tied together in a pot. He later told me he threw the items into the sea. He said that if I ever leave him or cheat, I will go mad.

My parents know him, but they don’t know about this oath. Every time I consider seeing someone else, I remember the swearing, and I retreat because I’m terrified of going mad.

Despite all he provides, I’m not happy. I have money saved and a future ahead of me, but I’m unsure if it’s worth the risk. I want to be free and explore.

I want to enjoy intimacy, experiment, and feel passion, things I can’t do with him. He is much older and very limited sexually. He doesn’t satisfy me, and everything is restricted to the bedroom.

The painful truth is, I don’t love him. I don’t even have feelings for him anymore. So how can I marry someone I don’t love? I feel stuck and confused.

I want to move on with my life, but I’m haunted by fear, what if I leave and something terrible happens, like he said?

I now regret agreeing to that oath. I thought it was a joke until I saw the items he used tied up in a pot.

Please, I just want to be happy. I want to live and enjoy my youth like my friends. But I feel trapped. What should I do?

I’m deeply sad and desperate for help.

Stop encroaching Ghana Water Company land

0

Joseph Nelson is the Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson is the Western Regional Minister

Joseph Nelson, Western Regional Minister, has warned against human activities encroaching on the land belonging to Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) at its treatment site at Daboase in the Wassa East District.

Consequently, the Minister has ordered Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to urgently demarcate the buffer zone at the Daboase treatment plant site to halt these negative human activities threatening the land within the demarcated area.

The move, he says, aims at protecting the seventy million euro (£70m) water expansion project currently being undertaken to supply twenty two (22) million gallons of water per day to Sekondi-Takoradi and its surrounding communities.

According to the Minister, despite the visible encroachment taking place, landowners are claiming to know virtually nothing about these bizarre development.

The Minister gave the warning during his familiarization visit to the Daboase treatment plant.

Following revelations about the encroachment activities, he immediately directed Ghana Water Company Limited to quickly demarcate buffer zones around the enclave urgently.

This move, he said follows claims of ignorance by the landowners around the affected areas.

The Minister also instructed local chiefs in the area to halt any planned activities within the designated zones.

“The chiefs who sold land within the buffer zone claim ignorance, stating they didn’t know it was a restricted area. To prevent further encroachment, I suggest installing signposts to clearly mark the buffer zone as a no-go area.

If ignored, the law should take its course. I urge the District Chief Executive to address this issue with the chiefs.

He emphasized that their actions are illegal and threaten the water supply for the metropolis and its surrounding communities.

“We will ensure they understand that the development of the project won’t be allowed despite clearing already done” he warned.

The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and GWCL launched a seventy million Euro water Expansion Project in Sekondi-Takoradi in May 2022.

Austrian firm Strabag was contracted to build a 22 million gallons per day Daboase water treatment plant.

During the Western Regional Minister’s visit, Strabag reported 86% completion, with an expected finishing date of November 7, 2025.

Vlad Falup, Project Manager for Strabag Engineering, explained that, “All main structures are complete. We’re currently working on the high-lift pumping station, which houses the pumps that will transport water to Inchaban and other pumping stations.

The mechanical equipment is in place, and though the tanks are underground with structures above, we are confident we will finish by November 7, 2025”.

Gideon Asare Annor, Western Regional Manager in charge of production at Ghana Water Company Limited, is worried about the development.

“As you can see, the buffer zone has been completely encroached upon, which means, this river will likely dry up faster than usual during the dry season.

This would render our 22 million gallons per day treatment plant idle, which would be unfortunate.

The encroachment is evident, especially since the area is prone to erosion.

Ideally, the buffer zone should start further up to prevent runoff and protect the water source,” he stressed.

The Daboase water treatment plant was built in the late 1960s with a capacity of six million gallons supply day, and the Inchaban plant, with four million gallons daily but they all struggle now to meet demand for Sekondi-Takoradi and all its surrounding areas.

Interestingly, climate change, avoidable human activities, including Illegal mining, have increased water turbidity, therefore reducing production from 6 million gallons per day to just above 16,000 gallons per day.

The water supply is further threatened by encroachment around the buffer zones protecting the water source, especially during the dry season.

OSP declares Ofori-Atta wanted again

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has re-declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wanted effective Monday, June 2, 2025.

The declaration follows Mr. Ofori-Atta’s failure to honour the OSP’s invitation for interrogation, violating an earlier agreement.

Addressing a press conference, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, stated that his patience with Mr. Ofori-Atta has run out, citing repeated delays and non-compliance on the part of the latter.

“We want him here physically. We have indulged him for long, and it ends here,” he stated.

The former minister was initially expected to appear before the OSP today as part of efforts to resolve his legal issues with the office.

However, he requested a virtual session, citing medical reasons.

A member of his legal team, Frank Davies, had explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta will not be physically present in Ghana as earlier agreed, and his legal team has officially communicated this to the OSP.

Mr. Davies added that relevant medical documents have been submitted to the OSP, and the development has also been brought to the attention of the Human Rights Court.

But Mr. Agyebeng has stated that no medical report has been presented to the office.

The immediate implication of this re-declaration is severe. Mr. Ofori-Atta now faces the full force of the OSP’s mandate, which includes pursuing his return to Ghana by all lawful means.

The threat of an INTERPOL Red Notice means he could be arrested in any of INTERPOL’s 196 member countries, significantly curtailing his international movement.

On February 12, 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng declared Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted in connection with four high-profile corruption investigations. The OSP further described him as a fugitive from justice.

However, Mr. Ofori-Atta maintains that the declaration was unlawful and is currently seeking redress through the courts.

He filed a motion on March 15, 2025, seeking to restrain the OSP from branding him a “wanted person” and a “fugitive,” and is also asking the court to compel the OSP to delete all related statements from its social media platforms.

The motion is being contested by the OSP and is scheduled for a ruling at the Accra High Court on June 18.

Mahama pledges completion of KATH maternity block after years of delay

0

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to completing key health infrastructure projects in the Ashanti Region, notably the long-delayed maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

He made the pledge on Monday, June 2, when the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, led a delegation of eminent chiefs to pay a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.

Work on the new project started in February 2021 after the old block was demolished.

The five-storey facility, set to feature modern theatres and specialised wards including paediatric neurology, haematology, cardiology, and respiratory care, will serve as a one-stop centre for comprehensive maternal, newborn, and child healthcare.

It will also contain a Paediatric Infectious Disease Unit, a Mother and Baby Unit, and a dedicated Paediatric Renal Unit.

In his address, President Mahama also assured the continuation and completion of the Sewua and Afari Military Hospitals, which have suffered setbacks in recent years.

“In the Health Sector, we will continue and complete the Sewua and Afari Military Hospitals. We will also continue and complete the KATH maternity and children blocks,” he stated.

He further noted that the Ashanti Region would feature prominently under his administration’s ambitious infrastructure drive, known as the ‘Big Push’ Agenda.
