FA Cup: Albert Amoah strikes tremendous goal against B. Chelsea to secure Asante Kotoko into final spot

0

Asante Kotoko booked their place in the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup final after a late goal from Albert Amoah secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium on Sunday.

In a tense semifinal clash that lived up to its billing, Amoah emerged as the hero for the Porcupine Warriors, heading home the decisive goal in the 80th minute to seal a spot in the final.

His well-timed finish came after he was left unmarked in the box, and he made no mistake from close range, sending the raucous crowd into celebration.

Despite the narrow scoreline, the match was an end-to-end affair filled with drama, intensity, and near misses.

Berekum Chelsea started brightly, displaying confidence in possession and fluid inter-positional play. Their talisman Stephen Amankona was a constant menace on the wings, tormenting Kotoko’s full-backs with his pace and trickery.

However, despite creating several clear-cut chances, Chelsea failed to capitalise, wasting opportunities that would come back to haunt them.

Kotoko weathered the storm and remained organized at the back. They grew into the game as it progressed, eventually snatching the winner with 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

The goal proved enough to send the nine-time champions back to the FA Cup final, much to the delight of their traveling supporters and neutrals at the nearly packed Tarkwa stadium.

The energy-sapping encounter was a spectacle, showcasing the very best of Ghanaian football with a high-tempo, fiercely contested battle between two Premier League sides.

The electric atmosphere in the mining town added to the occasion, making it a memorable semifinal.

Asante Kotoko will now prepare to face Division One side Golden Kick FC in the final, set for June 15 at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Golden Kick stunned many by reaching the final after a 3-1 victory over Attram De Visser in the first semifinal on Saturday.

For Kotoko, the FA Cup represents not only a shot at silverware but also a possible route back into continental competition, a target that grows increasingly closer.

Why did Akufo-Addo government’s national security support an ‘opposition party’?

0

Startling revelation last week by Kwaku Adu-Boahene, former Director General of the National Signals Bureau, that the security apparatus of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government made huge payment to the then opposition party has raised eyebrows.

Adu-Boahene, in a letter he wrote from the custody of EOCO, listed a breakdown of the disbursement of some 49 million cedis he is being prosecuted for stealing.

He disclosed he paid a whopping GH¢8.3 million to an opposition party supposedly of the New Patriotic Party to aid their 2024 opposition party’s election campaign.

The alleged payment to the NPP’s political opponent by the security apparatus of the party’s own government has been heavily criticised with many people questioning why the then government would make such a payment to the opposition party.

In view of this, a Development Economist and lecturer, Dr Margaret Coomson, has described as “betrayal” the payment made to the opposition party.

It is a “stab in the back of the NPP and its 2024 presidential and parliamentary candidates” by the then government, she wrote in an article.

Why did the Akufo-Addo government’s national security apparatus support the NDC in the 2024 election?

By Dr. Margaret Coomson, Development Economist

Imagine Real Madrid making a huge cash donation to its fiercest rivals, Barcelona, to aid Barca’s transfer activities. Or imagine Barcelona, sending technical and other form of support to Real Madrid, to aid Madrid’s preparation ahead of a crucial El Classic, to decide the La Liga title.

Such a scenario, to both sets of rival fans, is unfathomable. And in the most unlikely event that any official from either club, sanctioned such a strange gesture, it would be deemed sacreligious and unforgivable!

Well, that’s what happened right here in Ghana, in our political space in the build up to the crucial 2024 Elections.

According to former Director General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahene, the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government, through its security apparatus, supported the NPP’s fiercest rival in the election, with a mindboggling financial support of GHS 8.3m Cedis!

Yes you read right; the NPP Government, according to the former intelligence Chief, made a whopping financial assistance of GHS 8.3m to its opponent to aid their elections operations.

Interesting, isn’t it? Well, to some people, it is scandalous and a betrayal of unimaginable proportion, for the security apparatus of a sitting government, to extend such a support to a political rival seeking to axe the government and the NPP from office.

It is, therefore, unsurprising, and understandable that a number of NPP party stalwarts are seething with rage, following revelation by Kwabena Adu-Boahene, in his explosive letter, which also revealed another gleeful presentation of brand new vehicles to the then President-elect, at a time the President-elect himself had told the whole world that government’s coffers were empty to the bone!

A number of high-ranking NPP members I am very close to, have expressed their disgust over the what they rightly deem a complete betrayal by its own government and officials, against the NPP party and it’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Why did our own Government’s National security apparatus support the NDC in the 2024 election? This revelation is shocking and I am very sad our own government, our own people did this against our party,” one leading national executive member of the party told me.

The angry national executive official believes the government’s national security apparatus could not have made such a huge payment to the opposition without official authorisation from the apex of the then government.

This is assertion is true, and I completely side with it. There was no way one person, in this case Adu Boahene alone, from the national security apparatus, could have made such a treacherous payment to a party’s rival without the blessings and support of the very top.

Adu Boahene’s claims, which have so far not been denied by key elements in the erstwhile government’s security chiefs, including Security Minister and National Security Coordinator, is a complete betrayal and a painful stab in the back of the NPP party, its Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates.

Concerned NPP members, and indeed Ghanaians, would be right to question the motives of those who planned and executed such huge payment by the Akufo-Addo government to its main political rival?

Since the shocking disclosure by Adu Boahene, I have been imagining what really was the motive of those who did this to betray their own party in a crucial election.

Those who ordered the payment and those who executed it, surely would have done so for two reasons; to sabotage the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as is being speculated, or an attempt to buy their own security should the opposition party win, a fantasy which seems to have backfired, necessitating a straw-clutching disclosure by Adu Boahene.

Well, if you thought it’s unfathomable for a political party in government to extend huge financial support to its arch rival ahead of a crucial election to aid their preparations, you should know that the Akufo-Addo government, through its national security apparatus, stabbed its own party, the NPP in the back.

The lingering question remains: why did the Akufo-Addo government’s national security apparatus support the NPP’s arch rival in the 2024 election?

This is a question true and concerned members of the NPP, including the party’s 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates, will justifiably continue to ask themselves.

McDan defends airport land investment after court ruling favours GACL

Ghanaian business magnate Dr Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan Ghanaian business magnate Dr Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan

Ghanaian business magnate Dr Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, has reaffirmed his commitment to strategic investments around Kotoka International Airport despite a recent court decision awarding the disputed land to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

On May 6, the High Court in Accra ruled in favour of GACL, granting the state agency full possession of more than 16 acres of prime airport land.

The property, situated near the Kotoka International Airport, had been under the control of McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, subsidiaries of the McDan Group.

GACL initiated legal action, citing violations of lease agreements and unpaid ground rent amounting to $26,296. The court upheld the claims and authorized GACL to repossess the land.

In response, the McDan Group has filed for a stay of execution and announced plans to appeal the ruling.

The company insists it has acted responsibly and in good faith throughout its nearly two-decade occupancy of the land.

According to the group, significant investments have been made to secure and improve the area, including the construction of warehouses and the provision of private security patrols for over 12 years to deter encroachment.

These efforts, McDan argues, reflect a long-term vision to develop the space into a logistics and trade hub.

“That the Defendants/Respondents/Respondents are advised and verily believe same to be true that the Honourable Court was duty bound to determine whether there was a legal basis for a relief against forfeiture as provided under Section 58 of the Land Act 2020, Act 1036.

“That there exist special circumstances warranting the grant of a stay of execution of the Judgment of the Honourable Court.

“That the Honourable Court granted an order for recovery of possession, and if the Judgment is not stayed irreparable damage will be caused to the Defendants/Appellants/Applicants as their appeal would be rendered nugatory.

“That the Defendants/Appellants/Applicants have developed the disputed land and a refusal of the instant application would mean losing all their investments and property on the lands in dispute,” part of the court papers said.

McDan maintains that his engagement with traditional allodial landowners from La, Teshie, and Nungua was intended to foster trust and inclusion.

According to him, he chose to work directly with these communities rather than seek a title through the Lands Commission, a move he says was guided by cultural respect and a community-first approach.

Supporters of the McDan Group believe the legal decision risks undermining years of developmental work and community support.

They argue that McDan’s presence in the area has generated employment and enhanced economic activity.

The company has emphasized that it will exhaust all legal avenues to protect its investments and uphold its legacy as a pioneer in transforming the airport enclave.

Opposition Declares Mahama’s First 120 Days a Failure

Ghana’s political opposition has delivered a scathing assessment of President John Mahama’s initial months in office, accusing his administration of broken promises and governance failures.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, addressing journalists at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) headquarters, characterized the government’s much-touted “reset” agenda as fundamentally flawed.

“The president promised swift, meaningful change, but Ghanaians have received only flashy project launches without substance,” Afenyo-Markin stated. His critique focused on three key areas: employment, national security, and energy policy. The opposition claims the administration began its term by dismissing thousands of public sector workers across critical institutions including the Ghana Health Service, COCOBOD, and the Ghana Revenue Authority, actions they describe as politically motivated purges.

The minority leader saved particular criticism for the government’s handling of the military, noting the dismissal of the Chief of Defence Staff and numerous senior officers had compromised institutional stability. “At a time demanding security sector continuity, we’ve seen dangerous politicization of our armed forces,” he asserted. These claims come alongside allegations of state security agencies being weaponized against political opponents, with Afenyo-Markin citing multiple high-profile raids on former officials’ residences.

Energy policy emerged as another flashpoint, with the opposition highlighting the return of power outages and recent tariff increases as evidence of policy contradictions. “How can you promise a 24-hour economy while failing to maintain stable electricity supply?” Afenyo-Markin questioned, contrasting current challenges with the NPP’s record in government.

The minority’s comprehensive critique presents a challenging narrative for the Mahama administration as it seeks to establish its governance credentials. With the opposition framing these first months as indicative of broader governance failures, the government now faces mounting pressure to demonstrate tangible progress beyond ceremonial launches and political rhetoric. How the administration responds to these criticisms may set the tone for Ghana’s political discourse in the coming years.

I still consider you my heroine – Afua Asantewaa’s husband celebrates her after second GWR singathon attempt

Media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum Media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum

Kofi Owusu Aduonum, husband of Ghanaian media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, has hailed his wife as a heroine despite her second unsuccessful attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest individual singing marathon.

In a heartfelt piece, Kofi Aduonum praised her courage, stating, “Bebe (Afua Asantewaa Aduonum) as I fondly refer to you, to say you have demonstrated bravery in your two successive Guinness World Records (GWR) attempts is an understatement.”

The GWR disqualified Asantewaa’s 121-hour, 39-minute Singathon, held from December 21 to 25, 2024, at Heroes’ Park, Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, on May 8, 2025, citing a violation of rest break rules, specifically a 15-minute break when only 10 minutes were accrued.

Despite this, Kofi wrote, “The recent results- GWR citing failure to adhere to the five minutes break as the reason for not handing you the certification notwithstanding, I still consider you as my heroine.” He added, “For a woman, and a mother of three for that matter to embark on such a herculean task deserves a pat on her shoulder.”

Kofi detailed the grueling logistics, noting, “The enormity of the attempt had a toll on me and has still not recovered from the sleepless nights. I made sure, what she will eat, drink, wear as well bathing was done within the limited five minutes.”

Preparations according to Kofi Aduonum involved multiple Accra-Kumasi trips, media tours with outlets like Akoma FM and Kesben FM, and securing the venue with support from the Ashanti Region National Sports Authority.

A key moment he noted was their meeting with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who offered blessings after initial challenges.

Addressing past criticism following Asantewaa’s 2023 attempt, Kofi apologized for any miscommunication that led to cyberbullying, particularly over perceived ingratitude toward former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s support.

He clarified, “Our presence at Dr Bawumia’s house after the first attempt to say thank you was enough evidence of how grateful we were.”

Marking Asantewaa’s birthday and Mother’s Day on May 11, 2025, he wrote, “You have been such a lovely friend and a great personality… happy birthday and happy Mothers Day.”

Despite the GWR outcome, Kofi also saluted Asantewaa’s determination to promote Ghanaian music globally.

NGOs indispensable in driving community development, educational empowerment – Education minister

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has underscored the vital role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in advancing community development and educational empowerment in Ghana.

Speaking through his deputy at the 2024–2025 Academic Year Scholarship Awards Ceremony organized by Relief and Aid International, the Minister praised NGOs for their contributions to equitable access to education, particularly for underserved students.

The event, themed “Beyond the Aid, Unveiling the Future,” celebrated the awarding of scholarships to over 45 needy but brilliant students pursuing studies in fields such as medicine, nursing, engineering, and education.

The Minister highlighted that initiatives like these align with the government’s agenda to provide inclusive and relevant education through policies such as Free SHS, curriculum reforms, and teacher development.

“Relief and Aid International is not only removing financial barriers but also igniting hope, potential, and service-oriented leadership,” he stated.

Madam Peggy Adamafio, Founder and President of Relief and Aid International, emphasized the importance of investing in youth to shape Ghana’s future. Quoting Kofi Annan, she said, “Health is a human right,” stressing the need for skilled healthcare professionals and preventive healthcare.

Madam Adamafio described the scholarships as “bridges that connect talent to opportunity,” urging recipients to dream boldly, work tirelessly, and give back to society.

She also outlined the organization’s broader mission to address challenges such as financial instability, lack of accommodation, and other barriers to youth success.

The ceremony recognized the resilience and academic excellence of the scholars, who have overcome significant obstacles.

The Minister encouraged them to view the support as both a reward and a responsibility—to serve and uplift others. He also expressed the Ministry’s openness to further collaboration with Relief and Aid International to enhance learning outcomes at the community level.

Madam Adamafio thanked donors, partners, and mentors for their generosity, noting that their contributions would create a lasting legacy. The event reaffirmed the shared commitment to empowering Ghana’s youth through education, with stakeholders urged to continue building partnerships for long-term resilience and opportunity.

Congratulations were extended to the scholarship recipients, along with calls for them to lead with compassion and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development.

Inflation in Ghana Drops for Fourth Straight Month

0

Ghana’s annual consumer inflation continued to ease in April, dropping to 21.2% from 22.4% recorded in March, marking the fourth consecutive monthly decline, according to data released by the Ghana Statistical Service on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu attributed the decline to a slowdown in both food and non-food inflation. However, he noted that food inflation remains the primary contributor to overall price increases. “Food inflation remains the biggest price driver,” he said, cautioning that it still remains significantly high.

Inflation in Ghana Drops for Fourth Straight Month

Despite the latest easing, Ghana’s inflation rate remains well above the central bank’s target range of 8%, with a tolerance band of two percentage points on either side. The West African country, a key producer of gold, oil, and cocoa, has struggled with persistent inflationary pressures in recent years.

In March, Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama stressed the importance of maintaining a tight monetary policy to bring inflation under control. He surprised markets by announcing a rate hike, stating that its effectiveness would be reviewed ahead of the central bank’s next policy meeting in May.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, speaking during his March budget presentation, expressed confidence that stringent expenditure cuts would enable the country to reduce inflation to 11.9% by the end of the year.

Amber Heard announces birth of twins in Mother’s Day post

Amber Heard has announced the arrival of twins in an Instagram post shared on Mother’s Day in the United States.

Amber Heard has announced the arrival of twins in an Instagram post shared on Mother’s Day in the United States.

The American actor revealed that she had welcomed daughter Agnes and son Ocean and was “elated beyond words” to celebrate the “completion” of her family.

Heard, 39, welcomed her first daughter, Oonagh, in 2021.

Under a picture of three pairs of feet, Heard wrote: “Becoming a mother by myself and on my own terms despite my own fertility challenges has been the most humbling experience of my life.”

The actor said she had chosen motherhood “responsibly and thoughtfully” and “couldn’t possibly burst with more joy”.

She described her family as one she had “strived to build for years”.

“To all the moms, wherever you are today and however you got here, my dream family and I are celebrating with you,” she added.

When Heard announced the birth of her first daughter in 2021, she spoke about her desire for it to be “normalised to not want a ring in order to have a crib”.

“I now appreciate how radical it is for us as women to think about one of the most fundamental parts of our destinies in this way,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

Heard is best known for her films The Rum Diary, Drive Angry, Zombieland and Aquaman.

She was married to actor Johnny Depp from 2015 to 2016.

After their marriage ended, the pair accused each other of domestic abuse and engaged in two lengthy and high-profile defamation cases.

In the Depp v. News Group Newspapers (NGN) trial in 2020, Depp lost his UK libel case against the Sun newpaper after Heard gave evidence to back claims in the newspaper that he was a “wife-beater”.

In the widely publicised Depp v. Heard trial in the US, Heard was found liable for defaming Depp.

For six weeks in 2022, a court in the US state of Virginia heard details of the couple’s volatile relationship.

Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation over an opinion article she wrote for the Washington Post that alleged she was a domestic abuse victim, although it did not mention him by name. Heard counter-sued.

Jurors awarded Depp – who denied abusing Heard – $15m (£12m) in compensatory and punitive damages.

Heard won one of three counter-claims against Depp and was awarded $2m in compensatory damages.

World Bank hails Ghana’s social cohesion efforts

Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf [L], and World Bank's Robin Mearns Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf [L], and World Bank’s Robin Mearns

The World Bank has commended Ghana for the remarkable progress achieved under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project, describing its performance as exceeding expectations and delivering beyond initial targets.

This remark was made by Mr Robin Mearns, the World Bank’s Global Director for Social Development, who led a high-level World Bank delegation to tour SOCO project sites and engaged with stakeholders to assess midterm progress, strengthen collaboration, and explore opportunities for potential scaling up the initiative.

“The SOCO Project is not only meeting but exceeding its targets. It is bringing tremendous economic prosperity to regions that have not seen much investment in the past.

The scale and inclusiveness of the project are impressive, and I strongly encourage additional funding to extend its reach to the remaining vulnerable districts”, Mr. Mearns said.

During the field visit, the delegation inspected community-level interventions in Jinlo along the Salaga corridor, including a CHPS compound and guinea fowl rearing project. Mr. Mearns recounted the story of Fatima, a local farmer whose guinea fowl stock grew from 30 to over 100 birds with SOCO support.

“Fatima’s story is just one example of how SOCO is boosting local livelihoods and building resilience,” he said.

The team also engaged with other income-generating groups such as the Shishegu Soap Makers and toured a newly built livestock market. These initiatives fall under SOCO’s Local Economic Development (LED) component, which is central to the project’s mission of sustainable community empowerment.

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John, described the project as a game changer in addressing both infrastructure gaps and social vulnerability in the six Northern regions. He noted that SOCO’s integrated approach is helping to shape peaceful and thriving communities across the regions.

SOCO Project Coordinator, Ms Elizabeth Ohenewah Agyei, revealed that the first cycle of the project had delivered 530 community infrastructure subprojects, with 489 completed and handed over as of February 2025.

These include 33 roads and culverts, 59 educational facilities, 66 health centres, 210 water facilities, and 73 rural markets. She also noted that over 6,200 jobs—many for women, youth, and persons with disabilities—had been created, and 744 livelihood groups with more than 24,000 members had received support to boost local productivity.

Ms. Agyei added that a second cycle is underway, targeting the delivery of 680 additional subprojects across the 48 districts. “The SOCO Project is not just about bricks and blocks. It’s about building community ownership and participation,” she said. “We aim to strengthen the social fabric through inclusive leadership and shared responsibility, which are the true essence of social cohesion.”

The delegation also participated in the inauguration of the Tamale Metropolitan Youth Parliament, a civic engagement initiative under SOCO that promotes youth involvement in governance and peacebuilding. Mr. Nicolas Perrin, World Bank’s Practice Manager for Social Sustainability and Inclusion in West Africa, described the platform as a model worth replicating. “This Youth Parliament exemplifies civic inclusion and leadership development,” he said.

The SOCO Project is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. It operates 48 selected districts across Ghana’s six northern regions with a focus on building inclusive, peaceful, and economically empowered communities along the northern border zones.

‘Adjust prices with immediate effect’ – GUTA to traders as cedi gains strength

0

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) is calling on traders to cut prices in response to the recent appreciation of the cedi.

In a brief but firm statement, GUTA appealed to the trading community to reflect the currency gains in their pricing. “We wish to appeal to the trading community to adjust prices of goods and services,” the statement said.

According to GUTA, the cedi has made “significant gains” against major trading currencies. This, the group says, should translate into some relief for ordinary Ghanaians.

The union wants traders to act quickly. It believes consumers deserve to benefit from the recent currency stability. “Bring some relief to the consuming public,” the group urged.

GUTA says this is not just an economic concern, but a moral one too. It is asking its members to show fairness now that the cedi is doing better.

Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of GUTA, signed off the statement, keeping the message short and direct. But its tone was unmistakable—this is not a suggestion; it is a strong appeal for action.

‘Leadership is not talk, it’s action’

Former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong Former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has emphasised the belief that true leadership is rooted in action, not words.

He further urged party members to support others in need during difficult times.

In a post shared on X on May 10, 2025, he said, “Leadership is not talk, it’s action. Let’s step in when it matters.”

In the post, Kennedy Agyapong revealed that during a visit to Goaso in the Ahafo Region, he responded swiftly to the plight of a loyal member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Manu Dankwah, who lost his sight to glaucoma.

Despite his predicament, Manu Dankwah remained determined to complete the construction of his home.

However, his efforts were stalled due to a lack of resources to complete the project.

Upon hearing this, the former MP offered his support to Manu Dankwah in the form of money and roofing sheets.

“One of our loyal party elders, Mr. Francis Manu Dankwah, lost his sight to glaucoma but never gave up on finishing his home. All he needed was a roof,” the former MP said.

He continued, “During my visit to Ahafo Goaso, he handed me a letter asking for help. I responded with 5 packets of roofing sheets and GHC7,500 to get it done.”

Ghana can’t outsource cedi stability to global luck

0

Prof Isaac Boadi is the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy Prof Isaac Boadi is the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy

Although the Ghana cedi’s recent strong performance against the United States dollar is a welcome development, it is not sufficient to drive Ghana’s economic recovery and growth, according to Professor Isaac Boadi, Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy.

Contributing to recent discussions on the cedi’s gains against the US dollar, Professor Boadi stated that a weak dollar alone is not enough and that more needs to be done.

“The cedi’s rebound against the US dollar, fueled by gold, debt relief, and a $490 million lifeline, is a welcome respite. But let’s be clear—a weak dollar is not a sustainable strategy,” he stated.

“Emerging markets like Ghana cannot outsource their stability to global luck. We need to go beyond what the global economic crisis hands us and solidify our gains with pragmatic policies and programs,” he added.

“Without homegrown policies—particularly real structural reforms, curbing reckless spending, boosting local production, and slashing import dependency—this recovery will be a nine-day wonder,” Professor Boadi further explained.

He emphasized that although the cedi’s recovery against the US dollar is heartening, the government must tread cautiously with its short-term expenditure, as the gains made so far are, at best, artificial.

The Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Boadi described the government’s celebrations as premature and cautioned that if global market conditions improve, the US dollar could rebound and erode the cedi’s recent gains.

Act on Sammy Gyamfi’s cash gift to Agradaa

0

The Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, Mary Awelana Addah, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take firm action in response to the growing controversy over a cash donation made by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist, Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Her comments follow the circulation of a video on social media showing Sammy Gyamfi handing over an undisclosed sum of money, reportedly in dollars, to Nana Agradaa during a public event.

The gesture has triggered significant public backlash, with many Ghanaians raising concerns about the propriety of the donation in light of Agradaa’s controversial past.

Responding to the criticism, Sammy Gyamfi issued a public apology, explaining that the donation was a private act of kindness and never intended for public attention.

However, speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom with Charles Owusu-Kumi on Sunday, May 11, Mary Addah argued that the incident highlights the urgent need for stronger accountability frameworks for public officials.

“I believe that certainly, this is an opportunity for the President to demonstrate above and beyond that he means business by putting in place this Code of Conduct. We have had occasion to say that we would also want to see the Conduct of Public Officers passed, so that some of these behaviours can be criminalised,” she said.

She reiterated her call for the passage of the Conduct of Public Officers Bill, stating that it would help criminalise unethical behaviour and reinforce higher standards for public office.

“In this instance, if you go to even the Code of Conduct, you do not see a lot of punitive measures that would be in place to support whatever it is that this gentleman has been cited for,” she noted.

Mary Addah also called on the President to go beyond symbolism and issue a stern directive, particularly aimed at public officials who have not yet declared their assets.

“This is a call on the President to perhaps issue a stern warning to those who have not declared their assets to do so. That, for me, shows commitment, a little not just for the optics,” she said.

E/R: Champion ‘resetting agenda’ and ensure inclusive dev’t

0

Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, has called on all newly confirmed Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to immediately commence the “resetting agenda” and work towards equitable development across all parts of their districts.

Her call comes after the successful confirmation of all 13 MMDCE nominees in the assemblies she visited on Monday, May 5, 2025. Addressing the media at Akosombo to mark the end of the first week of confirmations, the Minister urged the new appointees to foster unity and lead development efforts beyond political lines.

“This is a signal that Ghanaians are up to something, and they appreciate the resetting Ghana Agenda of the president. I also want to appreciate all the municipal chief executives who have been confirmed and say that as much Ghanaians appreciate the resetting agenda, there is much that is expected of us as government appointees,” she said.

Madam Awatey stressed that the current administration would not operate as usual, emphasizing that the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council will strictly monitor all 33 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to ensure accountability and results.

“I want to caution all chief executives who have been confirmed that it is not just a showoff, there is a mandate for us. We all have to get up and put our hands on deck for us to get the work done,” she stated.

The Minister reiterated her commitment to supporting the MMDCEs in executing the president’s development agenda while urging them to be responsive to the needs of their communities.

Frustration deepens over deteriorating Pantang-Abokobi road

0

Frustration continues to mount as the Pantang-Abokobi road—a crucial link between the La-Nkwantanang-Madina and Ga East Municipalities—falls further into disrepair, with residents and commuters calling for urgent intervention.

The once-manageable stretch has now become a treacherous path marked by deep potholes, crumbling asphalt, and clogged drains due to erosion. Despite years of pledges and partial efforts, no substantial progress has been made on its reconstruction.

The project, which began in 2016 with drainage installations, stalled following the general elections.

According to the Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), the contractor abandoned the site, prompting the termination of the initial agreement and reassignment to a new contractor in 2019. However, since then, there has been little evidence of work on the ground.

Drivers say the poor road conditions are damaging their vehicles and cutting into their incomes.

“I have been using this road for almost two to three years. The road isn’t in the best condition. As an Uber driver, it causes a lot of damage to my vehicle, but I cannot decline a ride request because of the nature of the road. Authorities should fix the roads,” said Emmanuel Mawuko, an Uber driver.

Residents and business owners alike report that the road is not only an economic burden but also a public safety risk.

“Ahead of the elections, they brought bitumen to cover the road and made temporary fixes to it, but when the rains set in, the true reflection of the job they did has come to bear,” said Isaac Dzakweisi, a resident.

Others pointed out the dangers posed to emergency medical services, particularly since the road leads to the Pantang Hospital.

“The road is really bad, and we need them to come to our aid and fix it. It is very disturbing, given that it’s the route leading to the Pantang Hospital. Sometimes people are pronounced dead or their condition worsens upon the arrival of the ambulance at the hospital because of how unnavigable the road is.

They told us President Mahama will fix the road, we are waiting for his government to fix it,” said Hakim Mohammed, a local mechanic.

“I have been using this road for about a year. The road is very, very bad, and the fact that it leads to a hospital is not encouraging at all. I live around the Pantang Hospital, so I know what I am talking about. If for nothing at all, they should fix it because of the hospital,” added resident Michael Narh.

Though Daniel Kofi Okyere, the Municipal Urban Roads Engineer (MURE) for Ga East, declined to speak on the record, he hinted that the contract may soon be re-awarded.

Meanwhile, Municipal Chief Executive of the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, Ibrahim Faila, has promised to push for the road’s completion before the end of President Mahama’s current term.

“I am coming from Feeder Roads, mine is to go and lobby for a developmental project for my people. If they are satisfied, automatically I’m satisfied. But if they are not, I cannot sleep. Therefore, one of the things that I’ve started within just four days of my confirmation is to lobby. The schedule officer agreed with me on Tuesday.

“We’ll come to the areas and have a look at the area to see what we can do to better the routes and even reshape it where it’s supposed to be reshaped. Where there are supposed to be drains and other fittings, they will also do so to ensure that the road is very motorable for people to move freely,” he stated.

After nearly a decade of delays, the community continues to await not just words, but action—and a clear timeline for completion.

BoG warns public against fake foreign investors and deposit scams

The Bank of Ghana has warned the public against fake foreign investors and deposit scams The Bank of Ghana has warned the public against fake foreign investors and deposit scams

The Bank of Ghana has warned the public to stay alert and avoid falling prey to fraudulent “foreign investors” who are illegally soliciting deposits from Ghanaians under the guise of offering lucrative returns.

In a statement dated May 9, 2025, and signed by the Secretary, Sandra Thompson, the central bank described the activities of these so-called investors as criminal and in direct violation of Ghana’s financial regulations. According to the Bank, these scammers are operating across multiple platforms, offering large financial returns to lure unsuspecting individuals into making deposits.

“The invitation to members of the public to deposit monies with these ‘foreign investors’ amounts to deposit-taking business under section 4 of the Banks and Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930),” the Bank said, clarifying that such activities require licensing.

It emphasised, “Only a body corporate licensed by the Bank of Ghana may carry out the business of deposit-taking. These individuals or entities have not been licensed and are therefore acting unlawfully.”

The Bank further warned that perpetrators would not only be penalized but would also be required to refund all monies received.

“Such individuals or entities commit an offence and shall be penalised and required to refund all funds received,” the statement added.

In line with the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), the Bank noted that culprits risk facing penalties ranging from 500 to 100,000 administrative penalty units. Additionally, it called on the public to report any suspicious investment activities to law enforcement for investigation and possible prosecution.

It further stressed the need for due diligence.

“The public is encouraged to verify with the Bank of Ghana or other relevant authorities, the licensing status of an individual or entity before depositing funds,” she said. She also reminded depositors to deal only with accountable institutions licensed by the central bank to ensure legal protection.

As part of its measures to curb the menace, the Bank also called on media platforms to reject adverts from unlicensed investors.

“All media outlets including radio, television, and online channels are NOT to permit the advertisement of these illegal individuals or entities on their platforms,” it urged.

The Bank encouraged the public to reach out to its Financial Stability Department through various contact points including telephone and e-mail to report such cases or to verify entities before making deposits.

‘Proud to be young’ – Beauty queen, lawyer and Botswana’s youngest cabinet minister

0

Lesego Chombo’s enthusiasm for life is as infectious as her achievements are impressive: she has won the Miss Botswana 2022 and Miss World Africa 2024 crowns, is a working lawyer, has set up her own charitable foundation – and made history in November, becoming Botswana’s youngest cabinet minister.

She was just 26 years old at the time – and had clearly impressed Botswana’s incoming President Duma Boko, whose Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) had just won a landslide, ousting the party that had governed for 58 years.

It was a seismic shift in the politics of the diamond-rich southern African nation – and Boko, a 55-year-old Harvard-trained lawyer, hit the ground running.

His main focus, he said, was fixing an economy too reliant on diamonds, telling the BBC ahead of his inauguration that he wanted young people to be the solution – “to become entrepreneurs, employ themselves and employ others”.

Key to this was finding a suitable ambassador – and Chombo was clearly it: a young woman already committed to various causes.

He made her minister of youth and gender.

“I’ve never been more proud to be young,” she told the BBC at the ministry’s headquarters in the capital, Gaborone.

“I’m a young person living in Botswana, passionate about youth development, gender equality, but also so passionate about the development of children.”

The beauty queen did not campaign to be an MP – she is what is called a specially elected member of parliament – and is now one of just six female MPs in the 69-member National Assembly.

Chombo said becoming an MP and then minister came as a complete surprise to her.

“I got appointed by a president who had never met me,” she said.

“Miss World and the journey that I thought I was supposed to pursue as my final destination was only the platform through which I would be seen for this very role.”

It was her crowning as Miss Botswana in 2022 that raised her profile and enabled her to campaign for social change, while trying to inspire other young women.

It also gave her the opportunity to set up the Lesego Chombo Foundation, which focuses on supporting disadvantaged youngsters and their parents in rural areas – and which she is still involved with, its projects funded by corporate companies and others.

“We strive to have a world where we feel seen and heard and represented. I’m very thrilled that I happen to be the very essence of that representation,” she said.

As she prepared for last year’s Miss World pageant, she said: “I really put myself in the zone of service. I really channelled it for this big crown.”

Now in political office, she is aware of the expectations placed on her in a country where approximately 60% of the population is below 35 years.

It also has a high level of unemployment – 28%, which is even higher for young people and women who have limited economic opportunities and battle systemic corruption.

Chombo said this was something she was determined to change: “Currently in Botswana, the rates of unemployment are so high.

“But it’s not just the rate of unemployment, it’s also just the sphere of youth development.

“It’s lacking, and so my desire is to create an ecosystem, an environment, a society, an economy in which youth can thrive.”

Chombo said her plan was to develop a comprehensive system that nurtured youth-led initiatives, strengthened entrepreneurship and ensured young people had a seat at the table when decisions were being made.

With Botswana’s anti-corruption policy undergoing a rigorous review, she said this would ensure that quotas for young entrepreneurs – when state departments and agencies put out tenders for goods and services – were actually reached.

The government has begun a 10-month forensic audit of government spending that will include 30 state-owned enterprises.

Indeed President Boko is intent on cracking down on corruption, seeing this as a way to bolter investor confidence and diversify the economy – something his deputy has been seeking to do on recent trips to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Switzerland.

And a key deal has now been secured with UAE-based CCI Global, a provider of business process outsourcing, to open a hub in Botswana.

While youth development is a central pillar of her work, gender equity also remains close to her heart.

Her short time in office has coincided with a growing outcry over gender-based violence.

According to a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report, over 67% of women in Botswana have experienced abuse, more than double the global average.

“It hurts to know that it could be me next,” she admitted.

A month into her appointment, she was criticised for voting against an opposition motion in parliament to create “peace desks” at police stations and magistrate courts to quickly deal with victims.

At the time she said such provisions already existed within the law and what was needed was more public awareness.

This was followed in January by a police report noting that at least 100 women had been raped and another 10 murdered during the festive season – this caused public outrage with many lashing out at her on social media over the issue.

The minister reiterated – on several occasions, including before parliament in March – that Botswana had many laws and strategies in place and what was important was to ensure these they were actually applied.

But she told the BBC the government would be pushing for the implementation of a Gender-Based Violence Act, aimed at closing legal loopholes that have long hindered justice for survivors.

She said she was also advocating a more holistic approach, involving the ministries of health, education and local government.

“We want curriculums that promote gender equity from a young age,” Chombo said.

“We want to teach children what gender-based violence is and how to prevent it.

“It will boil down to inclusion of teaching gender equity at home, how parents behave around their children, how they model good behaviour.”

She has also been vocal about the need to address issues affecting men, particularly around mental health and positive masculinity, encouraging chiefs “to ensure that our patriarchal culture is not actively perpetuating gender violence”.

“I hear a lot of people say: ‘Why do you speak of women more than men?’

“It’s because as it stands in society, women are mostly prejudiced [against].

“But when we speak of gender equality, we’re saying that it should be applied equally for everyone. But what we strive for is gender equity.”

Chombo, who studied law at the University of Botswana, said she was thankful to her mother and other strong women for inspiring her – saying that women had to work “10 times harder” to succeed.

“[My mother] has managed to create an environment for me to thrive. And growing up, I got to realise that it’s not an easy thing.

“As women, we face so many pressures: ‘A woman cannot do this. A woman can’t do that. A woman can’t be young and in leadership.’ I’m currently facing that.”

She also credited Julia Morley, the CEO of Miss World, for helping her: “She has managed to create a legacy of what we call beauty with a purpose for so many young girls across the world.

“She has just inspired us so deeply to take up social responsibility.”

Chombo is serious about this. The beauty queen-cum-lawyer-cum-minister knows she has made history – but is also aware that her real work has only just begun.

“Impact. Tangible impact. That’s what success would look like to me,” she said.

“I want to look back and see that it is there and it is sustainable. That when I leave, someone else is able to carry it through.”

First batch of Ghanaian Muslim pilgrims arrive in Jedda to perform 2025 hajj

0

The first batch of 425 prospective Ghanaian Muslim pilgrims from the five regions of the north have arrived safely in Jedda in Saudi Arabia to perform the 2025 Hajj.

The pilgrims were airlifted directly from the Yakubu Tali International Airport (TIA) in Tamale to Jedda on Saturday. The rest of the pilgrims are expected to depart in batches in the coming days.

A total of about 6000 pilgrims are expected to travel from Ghana to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

This marks an increase of 2,000 compared to 4000 pilgrims who participated last year from northern Ghana.

The Chairman of the Interim Hajj Taskforce, Collins Dauda, accompanied by the Northern Regional Minister, Adolf Ali John, the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu and other government officials, paid a visit to the prospective pilgrims at the airport to bid them farewell.

Adequate arrangement

Alhaji Dauda admonished the would-be pilgrims to be disciplined and law-abiding during their stay in Saudi Arabia to enable them to undertake their spiritual duties successfully.

He assured the pilgrims that adequate measures had been instituted to ensure their safety and security in the holy land.

He added that arrangements had also been made for the pilgrims to be served meals daily for all the days that they would stay in Madina, adding that standard hotels had also been secured for them in Mecca.

Wishes/advice

For his part, Alhaji Muntaka wished them a safe and peaceful journey and assured them of the highest quality of service, as the interim Hajj taskforce had made all the necessary and befitting arrangements to ensure their comfort and well-being.

BoG warns public against illegal foreign investment scams

0

The Bank of Ghana has issued a stern warning to the public about the operations of unlicensed individuals and entities masquerading as foreign investors.

According to the Central Bank, these fraudulent actors are enticing unsuspecting victims with promises of high returns—activities that are in direct violation of Ghana’s financial laws.

In a notice titled “Scam Alert – Illegal Foreign Investors in Ghana,” the Bank stated that these schemes often involve unauthorized deposit-taking activities, which are strictly prohibited for any entity not licensed under Section 4 of the Banks and Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930).

The Bank emphasized that “it has not licensed any individuals or entities operating such foreign investment schemes” and warned that anyone participating in such ventures is committing an offense.

Offenders could face administrative penalties ranging from 500 to 100,000 penalty units, as stipulated under Section 53(3) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044).

To safeguard themselves, the public is advised to:

  • Verify the licensing status of any individual or entity before depositing funds;

  • Transact only with financial institutions licensed by the Bank of Ghana;

  • Report any suspicious activities to the Bank’s Financial Stability Department or relevant law enforcement agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Bank also cautioned media houses against promoting these illegal operations, urging radio, television, and online platforms to “verify the legitimacy of financial advertisers before airing their content.”

In conclusion, the Bank of Ghana called on all Ghanaians to stay vigilant and avoid falling prey to such fraudulent schemes.

US and China hold second day of trade talks in Geneva

0

Geneva, May 11, (dpa/GNA) – High-ranking representatives from the United States and China met in Geneva on Sunday for a second day of talks to resolve their ongoing trade dispute.

The delegations were again led by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Details about the content of the discussions have not emerged, with negotiations taking place weeks after US President Donald Trump sparked a massive tariff conflict, introducing 145% duties on Chinese goods.

China responded with retaliatory tariffs of 125% on US imports, sparking fears of a global trade war. Trump later floated the idea of cutting his 145% tariffs on China to 80%.

Trump said early on Sunday that the sides had made “GREAT PROGRESS” on the first day of talks in Switzerland.

“Many things discussed, much agreed to. A total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business.”

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later said he was “optimistic” about the talks with Chinese representatives but offered no specifics.

He acknowledged that high tariffs on Chinese imports would reduce trade volumes, but called it just the first step in broader negotiations.

“What the president’s tariff policy is, is let’s open all the markets in the world that have been closed to us. Let’s get that opportunity for Americans to export to them, let’s really, really help Americans export,” he said on CNN on Sunday.

Geneva is home to the World Trade Organization (WTO), where several countries, including the European Union, have announced complaints against US tariffs. They argue that the surcharges violate WTO rules.

The Atuabo Gas Processing Plant The Atuabo Gas Processing Plant

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Ghana Gas have confirmed a temporary disruption in gas exports from the Jubilee Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, known as the Kwame Nkrumah FPSO, to the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant (GPP) following a technical fault.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday, May 11, 2025, the two institutions disclosed that the incident occurred around 4:30 PM on Saturday, May 10. The malfunction, described as a “technical issue,” triggered a system trip that briefly halted gas transmission to the Atuabo facility.

“The operator is making every effort to identify the root cause of the problem, implement the necessary corrective measures, and restore gas supply to the Atuabo GPP as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement said.

GNPC and Ghana Gas indicated that their technical teams are actively working with the FPSO operator to resolve the issue promptly. While the gas export system was affected, they assured that oil production on the vessel remains uninterrupted.

“We wish to assure the public that the oil production system on the FPSO remains unaffected and continues to operate steadily,” it added.

The two companies expressed their gratitude to stakeholders and the public, stating, “We appreciate your continued support and understanding.”

Art curator Koyo Kouoh dies at height of career

0

Koyo Kouoh, one of the art world’s leading figures and a fierce advocate of African creatives, has died aged 57.

A Cameroon-born curator, Kouoh had been at the height of her career.

She was due to become the first African woman to lead next year’s Venice Biennale, one of the world’s most prestigious contemporary art events, and led one of Africa’s largest contemporary art museums.

The cause of Kouoh’s unexpected death has not yet been made public. The curator passed away in Switzerland, according to reports.

South African artist Candice Breitz described Kouoh as “magnificently intelligent, endlessly energetic and formidably elegant”.

Otobong Nkanga, a Nigerian visual artist, called the late curator a source of warmth, generosity and brilliance”.

Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni also spoke of Kouoh’s impact, saying her passing “leaves a void in the world of contemporary art”.

Kouoh’s colourful life began in 1967, when she was born in Cameroon, a Central African country with a rich artistic heritage.

She grew up in the country’s largest city, Douala, before moving to Switzerland aged 13.

There, she studied business administration and banking but, in a pivotal moment, chose not to pursue finance as a career.

“I am fundamentally uninterested in profit,” she explained in a 2023 interview with the New York Times.

Rather than building on her degree, Kouoh assisted migrant women as a social worker and began to immerse herself in the world of art.

She gave birth to her son in Switzerland during the 90s, an experience she described as “profoundly transformative”. She would go on to adopt three other children.

Fed up with life in the Swiss city of Zurich, Kouoh returned to Africa in 1996.

She worked as a curator in Senegalese capital city Dakar, before founding Raw Material Company, an expansive, independent art hub.

Just last week, and six years into her role as the director of South Africa’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Kouoh reflected on her love for Dakar.

“Dakar made me who I am today,” she told the Financial Times.

“It’s the place I came of age professionally, where I really became a curator and an exhibition-maker… I’m in Cape Town now but, mentally, I live in Dakar. It’s the one and only place for me.”

When Kouoh took the top job at Zeitz, Africa’s biggest contemporary art museum, the institution was in crisis.

Founding director Mark Coetzee had been suspended in 2018 following allegations of staff harassment and later resigned.

Kouoh has been widely credited with turning Zeitz’s fortunes around, leading it through the scandal, as well as the Covid pandemic.

“For me, it became a duty to salvage this institution,” she told The Art World: What If…?! podcast.

“I was convinced that the failure of Zeitz, if it had failed would’ve been the failure of all of us African art professionals in the field, somehow indirectly.”

As Zeitz’s director and curator, Kouoh oversaw a number of acclaimed exhibitions, including When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting. The show, which brings together works by black artists from the last century, is currently on display in Brussels.

In a statement announcing Kouoh’s “sudden” death, Zeitz expressed its “profound sorrow” and said that, out of respect, the museum would be closed “until further notice”.

In her Financial Times interview last week, Kouoh challenged the idea that death would bring an end to her endeavours.

“I do believe in life after death, because I come from an ancestral black education where we believe in parallel lives and realities,” she said.

“There is no ‘after death’, ‘before death’ or ‘during life’. It doesn’t matter that much. I believe in energies – living or dead – and in cosmic strength.”

In 2021, Kouoh was invited by French President Emmanuel Macron to a conference about the restitution of African artefacts

NDC supporters bare teeth at Nana Anamoah on social media for questioning President Mahama’s decisions

Some supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have lashed out at media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah for supposedly stampeding and questioning the discretion of President John Dramani Mahama.

Nana Aba, in a series of social media posts argued that that President Mahama should have offered Obuobia Darko-Opoku, a bigger position than the current one she is occupying.

She claimed that Obuobia worked hard to bring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to power and therefore deserves more.

On her X page, Nana Aba said: ‘’Obuobia Darko-Opoku practically wore out the soles of her shoes for her party ahead of the Dec. 7 elections. Her intellect? Undeniable. Her Loyalty? Unmatched. Her dedication…’’

In another post on X, the media personality said, “Obuobia didn’t just campaign. She connected. From dawn meetings at Keta to late-night rallies at Techiman, she showed up. It is obvious she deserves more than a deputy MD position.’’’

“When the stakes were high, Obuobia was higher on platforms, in communities, in strategy rooms. Someone who gave her all deserves a seat where she can make a national difference,’’ Nana Aba said in another X post.

However, NDC supporters are unhappy with the position of the media personality on behalf of Obuobia as it insinuates that President Mahama does not know what he is about.

According to insiders, the GACL has never had the position of a Deputy Managing Director, an indication that President Mahama created that position specifically for Obuobia.

They said that others equally struggled and worked extremely hard towards the December 7, 2024, elections but have not secured any appointment and are not complaining because they believe in the leadership style of the president.

Obuobia is presently the Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, (GACL).

Agradaa defends Sammy Gyamfi’s dollar gift; urges NDC supporters to tap into her blessings

0

Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has called on National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters to refrain from criticising Sammy Gyamfi’s $800 gift to her, describing the backlash as unnecessary.

The founder of Heaven Way Champion International Ministry addressed the controversy in a viral video, confirming the amount involved and urging party members to see the gesture as a divine blessing rather than a provocation.

“How much is $800? NDC supporters shouldn’t feel aggrieved because of this,” Agradaa stated. “The Bible says you should not covet your neighbour’s blessings—always tap into somebody’s blessings.”

Her remarks follow widespread debate after footage emerged showing Gyamfi, acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), publicly handing her the cash. While critics, including former MP Ras Mubarak, condemned the act as harmful to confidence in the cedi, Agradaa framed it as an act of generosity that others should aspire to receive.

“If Mama Pat has been blessed by Sammy Gyamfi, then supporters of the party should pray to encounter the same blessing from him,” she advised. She further cautioned against condemning goodwill, warning, “If you condemn the act and someone blesses you, it is a curse.”

Gyamfi apologises

Meanwhile, Gyamfi has apologised for the incident, clarifying that his intention was purely charitable. In a social media post, he explained: “This was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.”

He expressed regret over the video’s circulation, stating, “I sincerely thought I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined it could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable.”

Addressing discontent within the NDC, Gyamfi added: “I understand the uproar this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by it. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion.”

Despite the controversy, he reaffirmed his commitment to public service, saying, “My view of public office as a privilege to serve society remains unchanged.”

The incident has reignited discussions about dollarisation and its impact on Ghana’s economy. Critics argue that public displays of forex transactions, particularly by officials, undermine the cedi’s stability and flout the government’s Code of Conduct..

Ghana’s credit rating upgraded to ‘CCC+’ amid gold reforms and debt restructuring

Ghana’s credit rating upgraded to ‘CCC+’ amid gold reforms and debt restructuring Ghana’s credit rating upgraded to ‘CCC+’ amid gold reforms and debt restructuring

Ghana’s creditworthiness has been boosted following a decision by SP Global Ratings to upgrade the country’s foreign currency rating from ‘SD’ (Selective Default to ‘CCC+’.

This follows sustained progress in debt restructuring and macroeconomic management, with key indicators such as gold export earnings and foreign exchange reserves showing notable improvement.

The upgrade, detailed in S&P’s May 9, 2025, assessment, comes on the back of the successful completion of Ghana’s domestic debt exchange program and ongoing negotiations with external creditors.

S&P also affirmed the ‘CCC+’ ratings on Ghana’s debt and maintained a stable outlook on both foreign and local currency ratings.

The development reflects growing investor confidence, strengthened by government initiatives like the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board.

The Board, aimed at streamlining the gold value chain, is already playing a critical role in formalising the sector and boosting export revenues.

The improved external liquidity position, supported by a surge in gold exports and a recovering cedi, is helping Ghana meet its short-term obligations more comfortably.

The cedi, which had crossed GH¢17 to the dollar in 2023, is now trading around GH¢14, helping curb import-driven inflation, now at 21.2%—the lowest in eight months.

This progress also follows Ghana’s October 2024 Eurobond exchange and the memorandum of understanding ratified with bilateral creditors in January 2025, seen as a cornerstone of its broader economic recovery. The gains have been linked by some to the policy groundwork laid during the tenure of former President John Dramani Mahama.

Despite the positive outlook, S&P cautions that downside risks remain. Should Ghana’s fiscal performance weaken, or financing conditions tighten, the country’s ability to service its debt could be jeopardised, placing renewed pressure on its fiscal and external stability.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the Finance minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has, however, downplayed fears of reversal, insisting that the recovery is rooted in “prudent and well-coordinated economic policies.”

He emphasised that the current gains are not fleeting but a testament to deliberate efforts to restore confidence and build a resilient macroeconomic foundation.

The government continues to implement fiscal reforms to tackle structural challenges, signaling its commitment to long-term economic stability and sustainable growth.

According to a joint statement issued on Sunday, May 11, 2025, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 PM on May 10. The malfunction, described as a “technical issue,” resulted in a system trip that momentarily halted gas transmission to the Atuabo GPP.

The operators of the FPSO are currently working closely with technical teams to identify the root cause of the failure. They are also putting in place corrective measures to restore gas supply to the plant as safely and quickly as possible.

Despite the disruption in gas transmission, GNPC and Ghana Gas assured the public that oil production on the Jubilee FPSO remains stable and unaffected by the incident.

The corporations extended their appreciation to stakeholders and the general public for their continued support and understanding as efforts are made to resolve the issue.

SOCO Project: World Bank hails Ghana’s social cohesion efforts

0

The World Bank has commended Ghana for the remarkable progress achieved under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project, describing its performance as exceeding expectations and delivering beyond initial targets.

This remark was made by the World Bank’s Global Director for Social Development, Robin Mearns, who led a high-level World Bank delegation to tour SOCO project sites and engaged with stakeholders to assess midterm progress, strengthen collaboration, and explore opportunities for potential scaling up the initiative.

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf John, described the project as a game changer in addressing both infrastructure gaps and social vulnerability in the six Northern regions. He noted that SOCO’s integrated approach is helping to shape peaceful and thriving communities across the regions.

SOCO Project Coordinator, Ms. Elizabeth Ohenewah Agyei, revealed that the first cycle of the project had delivered 530 community infrastructure subprojects, with 489 completed and handed over as of February 2025.

Ghana forward Jerry Afriyie has rejoined the Black Satellites camp in Egypt ahead of the team’s highly anticipated quarter-final clash against hosts Egypt at the ongoing TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025.

Afriyie had temporarily departed the Ghana camp on Tuesday to honour club duties with his Spanish side, CD Lujo, in a scheduled league fixture—an arrangement agreed upon between the Ghana Football Association and the club prior to the start of the tournament. Following his appearance for CD Lujo, the young striker has now returned and is available for selection in what is arguably Ghana’s most important match yet.

The 19-year-old attacker featured in two of Ghana’s group stage matches—making a substitute appearance in the opening fixture and playing the full 90 minutes in the hard-fought second game against Senegal. His energy, movement, and attacking instinct have been valuable assets to Coach Desmond Ofei’s side.

The team has expressed gratitude to CD Lujo for their cooperation in releasing the player in time for the decisive quarter-final, scheduled for Monday, May 12, at 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT) at the new Suez Stadium. The stakes are high: a win not only secures a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament but also guarantees qualification to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Coach Desmond Ofei welcomed Afriyie’s return warmly, saying, “Jerry is a key part of our attacking setup. We understand the importance of his club commitments, and we’re thankful to CD Lujo for their understanding and collaboration. His return gives us a boost at just the right time.”

Afriyie himself has expressed excitement to be back with his teammates and is focused on helping Ghana reach the next stage. “It feels good to be back. The job isn’t done, and we all know what this next game means to us, to our fans, and to our country.”

All eyes will be on the Black Satellites on Monday as they seek to extend their run and secure a place on the world stage once again.

Nigeria engages Ghana over $75m gas debt, promotes Atlantic pipeline partnership

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekpo Ekperipe, stated that he discussed the outstanding $75m gas debt with Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, during the meeting.

The minister emphasized the need to engage relevant agencies in Ghana to settle the debt owed to Nigeria for gas supplied under the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) agreement.

Ghana’s outstanding debt currently stands at $75 million for gas supplied several months ago, with uncleared documentation hindering payment. Ekpo stressed the urgency of resolving the issue to safeguard energy cooperation and regional harmony, as outlined in the Treaty.

Nigeria supplies gas to Ghana through the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), a 678-kilometer regional infrastructure project designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria’s Niger Delta to Benin, Togo, and Ghana.

The WAGP is operated by the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo), a consortium that includes Chevron, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Shell, and national gas companies from Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

Gas is primarily used by power plants in Ghana to generate electricity.

Over the years, Ghana has occasionally fallen into arrears due to financial challenges in its energy sector, prompting Nigeria to demand payment to avoid supply disruptions.

The recent $75 million arrears dispute is part of this ongoing supply and payment relationship.

The Nigerian Petroleum Minister also solicited Ghana’s support for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline Project, a strategic project aimed at deepening regional ties in areas of energy security and economic cooperation.

We are committed to sustaining continued collaboration with Ghana in the gas sector,” he stated, reaffirming Nigeria’s readiness to resolve all outstanding matters related to gas supply under the WAGP agreement.

President Mahama, in his response, expressed appreciation for the minister’s comments and shared concerns, reiterating Ghana’s commitment to fulfilling its financial obligations to the West African Gas Pipeline project and promoting regional stability and prosperity.

Notably, in February, the Ghanaian government announced plans to negotiate with Nigeria’s N-Gas Limited to settle a $37.5 million payment, part of the outstanding debt for gas supplied to Ghana’s power plants.

However, the Managing Director of N-Gas has not confirmed or denied whether the payment was made.

The newly confirmed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga East, Edmund Agboh, has pledged to lead with integrity, transparency, and a strong commitment to inclusive development.

Speaking during his confirmation ceremony, Agboh assured residents of a revitalised local government system anchored on accountability and innovation.

The event, brought together several dignitaries including the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Members of Parliament for Shai Osudoku and Dome-Kwabenya, traditional authorities, and party executives.

In a metrotvonline.com report, Agboh expressed deep appreciation to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for entrusting him with the responsibility.

“Our journey ahead demands unity, accountability, and innovation. Together, we will revitalise local governance in line with the RESET agenda of our great party. There is the need for all stakeholders to work collaboratively in addressing the pressing development challenges within the municipality”, he stated.

Agboh acknowledged the persistent problem of inadequate funding and delays in the disbursement of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). To mitigate this, he announced plans to strengthen internally generated funds (IGF) through a more convenient and equitable revenue collection system designed to reduce leakages and improve efficiency.

On infrastructure, the MCE highlighted the rehabilitation of critical roads such as the Narhman-Musuku and Pure Water roads as a priority.

He added that the assembly will deploy its own machinery under the District Roads Improvement Project (DRIP), with newly appointed technical staff overseeing operations to ensure timely execution of works.

Addressing issues of market infrastructure and sanitation, Agboh revealed plans to modernize markets and lorry parks without displacing traders.

He also pledged to tackle water scarcity and poor sanitation by strictly enforcing National Sanitation Day activities and partnering with relevant agencies to improve public health outcomes.

On the issue of land protection, Agboh said his administration will collaborate with security agencies to clamp down on the illegal acquisition of state lands.

He reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, religious organizations, and civil society groups to build a united front for sustainable development in Ga East.

Heavy rains cause flooding in Somalia’s Mogadishu, killing seven

At least seven people have died, and main roads were cut off after heavy rains led to flooding in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.

The regional administration spokesperson, Abdinasir Hirsi Idle, said on Saturday that rescue efforts were continuing.

“The death toll could rise because the rains were heavy and lasted for several hours, causing nine houses to collapse across different neighbourhoods, and at least six major roads to suffer severe damage,” he said.

Somalia has in the past suffered extreme climate shocks, including prolonged dry seasons that have caused droughts and heavy rains resulting in floods.

Friday’s rains went on for about eight hours, leaving waist-high waters in neighbourhoods where some residents were trapped and others were forced to move to higher ground.

A resident, Mohamed Hassan, told The Associated Press news agency that some older people were still trapped.

“We spent the night on rooftops, shivering from the cold, and I haven’t even had breakfast,” he said.

Floodwaters also damaged key infrastructure, halting public transport and temporarily disrupting operations at the main Aden Abdulle airport. Officials later confirmed flights had resumed.

The Somalia Disaster Management Agency has not yet released an official death toll, but it said the assessment was underway to determine the extent of the damage.

The country’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources said in a statement on Saturday that “a substantial amount of rainfall, exceeding 115mm, was recorded in over 8 consecutive hours” and warned of flash floods in other regions outside the capital.

Gyamfiwaa Faces Backlash for Putting Her Entire Bosom on Display on the Red Carpet

0

Influencer Gyamfiwaa, known for her unapologetic and daring style, has once again sparked a conversation about fashion boundaries. At the 26th edition of the prestigious TGMA (The Ghana Music Awards), she wore a daring outfit that left many questioning how far one can go with fashion before it crosses the line. The dress in question, a bold and revealing choice, put her bosom on full display, causing quite a stir among attendees and fans alike.

The outfit, designed with a plunging neckline, was undeniably eye-catching, but it was her near wardrobe malfunction that had the internet buzzing. Gyamfiwaa, with her confident stride, almost suffered a slip that would have left little to the imagination. While some lauded her confidence and ability to pull off such a daring look, others criticized her choice, claiming it was too provocative for the event.

One onlooker couldn’t help but comment, “Eeei, she should have gone raw for us to know she is not wearing anything.” This remark, while hyperbolic, reflects a growing divide between those who embrace bold fashion statements and those who believe certain outfits push the boundaries of taste. Was Gyamfiwaa’s outfit an empowering display of confidence, or did it cross into the territory of seeking attention for the wrong reasons.

Fashion, at its core, is about expression. It allows individuals to make personal statements and break away from societal norms. But when it comes to public figures like Gyamfiwaa, the question arises: how much exposure is too much? In a culture where both body positivity and modesty are fiercely debated, every outfit choice seems to be scrutinized through a different lens.

For some, the very idea of wearing such a revealing dress at a formal event like the TGMA was seen as empowering. Gyamfiwaa is known for her fearless approach to fashion, often wearing what others might deem inappropriate or controversial. Her look at the TGMA was a testament to her boldness and self-confidence—a celebration of owning one’s body and daring to defy expectations.

However, critics argue that there’s a time and place for everything. Some believed her outfit was inappropriate for a music awards show, suggesting that a more modest approach would have been more fitting. The fact that the dress put her bosom on display and nearly resulted in a wardrobe malfunction only heightened the tension around the outfit. Was she being careless, or did she intentionally choose a dress that would push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable at such events.

The debate surrounding Gyamfiwaa’s outfit also raises another important question: is fashion about self-expression, or is it about seeking attention? Influencers, by nature, thrive on visibility and engagement, but does the level of exposure seen at such events cross a line between genuine fashion expression and sensationalism?

For Gyamfiwaa, perhaps the intention was simply to be bold and make a statement. After all, it’s hard to ignore the fact that her outfit definitely caught the attention of both her admirers and critics. In the world of influencer culture, attention is often the currency that drives success, and it’s clear that Gyamfiwaa’s daring fashion choice got people talking—whether for better or worse.

While Gyamfiwaa’s outfit certainly raised eyebrows, it’s important to take a step back and look at the larger conversation it sparks about body image, freedom of expression, and societal expectations. The fact that her outfit became the subject of so much discussion reflects how the fashion choices of influencers are under constant scrutiny.

Ultimately, Gyamfiwaa’s bold fashion statement at the 26th TGMA is a reminder that fashion will always be a controversial space. What one person sees as a confident, empowering choice, another may view as a step too far. The key is understanding that style is deeply personal, and every individual has the right to express themselves however they choose—within reason, of course.

In the end, Gyamfiwaa might have worn the dress to challenge societal norms, to make a statement, or simply to look fabulous. Whatever the case, she certainly achieved one thing: she got people talking. And in the world of fashion, that’s often half the battle.

Governance alert: Sammy Gyamfi’s PMMC position should not see Monday

0

If the President’s Code of Conduct means anything, Sammy Gyamfi’s time as Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) must end — and it must end immediately.

A now-viral video shows Gyamfi, a high-ranking political figure and presidential appointee, handing out US dollars from his vehicle to former fetish priestess Nana Agradaa in a moment he later described as “private generosity.”

This display, no matter the intent, is a violation not just of optics but of the very ethical principles laid out in the President’s own Code of Conduct for political appointees.

And let’s be clear: this is not about kindness. It’s about standards — the kind the Mahama administration promised to uphold. Section 1.1 of the Code of Conduct mandates that all ministers and appointees, including CEOs of parastatals, “perform their duties and manage their personal affairs in a manner that can stand the closest public scrutiny” and “ensure that any conflict between personal interest and public interest is resolved in favour of the public interest”.

Why this matters

A person in Sammy Gyamfi’s position cannot afford this kind of reckless informality. According to Section 1.2(c), appointees must manage their personal affairs in a way that withstands “the closest public scrutiny” and must comport themselves “in a manner befitting the trust and confidence placed in [them]”.

In a context where public confidence in institutions is already low, this dollar-handing stunt — however “well-meaning” — severely undermines the integrity of a fragile public office.

What makes the situation even more untenable is that this occurred while Gyamfi holds stewardship over GoldBod — a program controversially positioned at the heart of the government’s economic revival plans. His actions give the impression of discretionary financial power, misuse of influence, and public performativity — the very things the Code warns against in Sections 1.5.5 (Influence Peddling), 1.5.6 (Transparency and Accountability), and 1.5.9 (Use of Budgetary Allocation).

What the President must do

Section 6 of the Code is unequivocal: the President shall determine a course of action for any appointee who breaches the Code. The list of actions includes requiring a public apology, issuing a reprimand, requesting resignation, suspension, or outright termination.

Given the public nature of this breach and the potential to damage both the credibility of the GoldBod initiative and the new administration’s reformist image, the only appropriate option is immediate removal.

Failure to act will be read — and rightly so — as tacit approval of a system where appointees can blur the lines between public office and personal influence with impunity.

This is about more than one man

Yes, this is about Sammy Gyamfi. But it’s also about President Mahama. If he is serious about his own words — “I pledge to deal swiftly and decisively with any political appointee who breaches any of the standards set out in this Code” — then the response must match the rhetoric.

This administration has made integrity its rallying cry. It now has a chance to prove that cry is not hollow. Gyamfi’s act, however private he thought it was, became a public moment of failure. The job of good governance is to ensure private lapses don’t become national embarrassments.

Come Monday, the Ghana Gold Board needs new leadership. No equivocation. No delays. No excuses.
