Istanbul mayor formally arrested and removed from office

0

Istanbul, Mar. 23, (dpa/GNA) – Popular opposition politician Ekrem İmamoğlu, a leading rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been formally arrested and removed as mayor of Istanbul after a court on Sunday ordered his pre-trial detention on corruption charges.

İmamoğlu was first taken into custody on Wednesday, ahead of his expected nomination as the presidential candidate for Turkey’s largest opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP).

The move has sparked nightly nationwide demonstrations, with up to 300,000 rallying in Istanbul on Friday night alone according to CHP figures.

İmamoğlu is among those facing accusations of terrorism and corruption in two separate investigations involving a total of 106 suspects, including the mayor’s advisers and many others.

Critics see his arrest as an attempt to eliminate a potential rival to Erdoğan – a charge strongly rejected by the long-standing leader’s government.

The Interior Ministry said on Sunday that İmamoğlu had been “temporarily” suspended as mayor of Istanbul, a decision that added to the outrage among his supporters. A pro-government state official is expected to be appointed in his place.

The judge’s order for his pre-trial detention came in connection with the corruption charge, with İmamoğlu being accused of membership in a criminal organization, extortion, bribery, fraud and bid rigging.

He is also accused of supporting the banned Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) in the terrorism investigation.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said the charge in this case was linked to cooperation between the CHP and the pro-Kurdish DEM Party in the local elections.

Public prosecutors argue that the cooperation helped to extend the influence of the banned PKK.

İmamoğlu has vehemently denied the allegations and said on Saturday that they are based on “fabricated” reports.

CHP leader Özgür Özel said that İmamoğlu would be taken to Marmara Prison in Istanbul’s Silivri district.

CHP holds primary despite İmamoğlu’s arrest

The CHP went ahead with plans to nominate İmamoğlu as its presidential candidate in a primary vote on Sunday.

In the nationwide ballot, the party’s 1.7 million members are called upon to back İmamoğlu for the 2028 presidential election.

Broadcaster Halk TV showed images of queues outside polling stations in cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Kahramanmaras and Adiyaman.

A result was expected to be announced on Sunday evening.

Even if İmamoğlu gets the mandate from his party, he will only be recognized as an official candidate if the Turkish electoral authority YSK, which is considered to be pro-government, confirms his candidature.

If the terror investigations have not been dropped by then, it is unlikely that his candidacy will be accepted.

A higher-education qualification is also a prerequisite for running for president in Turkey. İmamoğlu was stripped of his university degree this week.

İmamoğlu’s victory in Istanbul in 2019 – and re-election in 2024 – were seen as bitter defeats for Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP), which had previously governed the city.

Istanbul is Turkey’s most populous metropolis and is of major importance to the country’s politics and economics.

Control of the mayor’s office is also highly symbolic, as the position was formerly held by Erdoğan from 1994.

The CHP has called İmamoğlu’s arrest a “civilian coup” by Erdoğan’s AKP.

Arrest sparks protest in Berlin

Some 1,300 people took to the streets in Berlin on Sunday to protest the arrest of İmamoğlu, according to police estimates.

Protesters marched from Breitscheidplatz to Adenauerplatz in the west of the German capital, some holding signs that read: “Together for a democratic Turkey” and “We want our democracy back.”

The CHP Federation in Berlin called for the rally.

Around 3 million people with Turkish roots live in Germany.

2024/2025 GPL: Medeama beat Aduana in Tarkwa

0

Medeama Sporting Club moved within 7 points of leaders Asante Kotoko, with a 2-0 win over Aduana in Tarkwa.

Ibrahim Tanko’s men controlled the opening half, with Michael Sarpong the standout performer, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Aduana struggled to create anything meaningful, with the first half ending goalless.

The second half continued from where the first ended, with Medeama continuing to push for the opener.

The breakthrough came 10 minutes into the second half when Sarpong was brought down in the box. Yussif Mubarik stepped up and calmly slotted home to give the home side the lead.

Aduana’s attempts to level were thwarted by a resolute defensive display from Medeama.

Midfielder Sarpong, sealed the victory with 15 minutes to go, when his close range low header found the back of the net.

The Mauve and Yellow are now unbeaten in their last six home matches, and hand yet another defeat to a Aduana FC side they’ve beaten four times at home in the league since 2020.

Preview: Madagascar vs. Ghana – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday’s World Cup Qualifying – Africa clash between Madagascar and Ghana, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Fresh off emphatic victories in their respective matchday five encounters, Madagascar and Ghana will square off in a top-of-the-table qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup at Mimoun Al Arsi Stadium in neutral Morocco on Monday

The Barea head into this fixture after thrashing Central African Republic 4-1, while the Black Stars dismantled Chad 5-0 in their last outing.

Match preview

What turned into a dominant display did not begin in the best fashion for Madagascar, as Hugo Gambor fired the Central Africans ahead just nine minutes in, but Rayan Raveloson‘s quickfire brace in the 17th and 22nd minutes turned the game on its head before Arnaud Randrianantenaina and Lalaina completed the rout in the second half to secure maximum points in Corentin Martins‘s first match in charge.

The recently appointed manager had stated before the encounter that many viewed his team’s World Cup ambitions as far-fetched, but the challenge itself has fuelled his motivation, and indeed the Barea certainly backed up his belief with their commanding performance.

Martins’s side have now climbed a spot higher in Group I, sitting second with 10 points from three wins, one draw and a defeat, two points behind this weekend’s opponent at the summit.

Madagascar’s impressive qualification campaign has been built on defensive solidity, conceding only three times – the fewest of any side in the group – while their nine goals scored rank second, a balance they hope will prove decisive as they seek to leapfrog Ghana on Monday.

Like the Barea, Otto Addo‘s men also experienced an upward trajectory following their emphatic win, seizing top spot from Comoros, who suffered defeat to Mali.

That result also ended the Black Stars’s winless run of eight competitive matches, a streak that included a dismal Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and an underwhelming showing in the CHAN preliminaries.

Ghana finished bottom of Group F with just three draws from their six AFCON qualifiers, meaning they will not feature at the tournament in Morocco, while their African Nations Championship hopes also ended in disappointment following a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Nigeria, making their current push for a World Cup ticket all the more significant.

While Madagascar have built their success in the competition on defensive resilience, the West Africans also pose a major attacking threat, having netted 12 goals in the qualifiers – more than any other side in the group.

Ghana have further reason for optimism heading into Monday’s clash, having edged the Barea 1-0 in the reverse fixture – a result they will look to replicate as they aim to tighten their grip at the top of the standings.

Jordan Ayew of Ghana in action against Mozambique on January 22, 2024© Imago

Having come through their match against Central Africa unscathed, head coach Martins is likely to stick with the same lineup that powered Madagascar to that emphatic victory.

However, Lalaina is pushing for a starting role in midfield after making a significant impact from the bench.

Raveloson will be the one to watch, with his brace in the last outing taking his tally to four in the qualifiers, and he will be eager to add to his growing haul.

Like the hosts, Ghana emerged from their previous fixture without any injury setbacks, making a repeat of their victorious lineup a strong possibility.

In that game, Addo deployed a 4-3-3 system, with Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo and Jordan Ayew leading the attack, and the trio will be keen to maintain their scoring form, having all found the net.

As a result, Ayew has taken his tally to five in the qualifiers, putting him just one behind Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, the current top scorer.

Madagascar possible starting lineup:
Dupire; Morgan, Fontaine, Marcelin, Rabemanantsoa; Lapoussin, Couturier, Ilaimaharitra, Raveloson, Randriananten; Caddy

Ghana possible starting lineup:
Asare; Schindler, Djiku, Salisu, Mensah; Kudus, Partey, Nuamah; Ayew, Semenyo, Williams

We say: Madagascar 1-1 Ghana

Considering the strength of their previous opponents, Madagascar had the tougher test, and while their statement win boosts confidence, the lack of full home support at a neutral venue could hold them back from taking maximum points, making a draw the likely outcome.

We won’t interfere in management of universities – Haruna Iddrisu

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has emphasized the government’s commitment to granting the management and councils of public universities the autonomy to operate independently.

He highlighted that the government values academic freedom highly and views any external interference in university affairs as a threat to this freedom.

The minister made this statement in a speech delivered on his behalf at the Second Session of the Third Congregation of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC) in Accra on Friday, March 21, 2025.

The event saw the University confer a Master of Philosophies (Mphil) and Master of Arts (MA) degree on 205 students; comprising 116 females and 89 males.

“I want to assure you that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, supported by his Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a former vice-chancellor herself, and a highly experienced academic, is firmly committed to empowering university councils and management to perform their statutory duties without interference,” he said.

Iddrisu also expressed the government’s commitment to empowering academic boards and management of the various public universities to enable them to perform their duties legitimately.

He, however, warned that the ministry would not hesitate to hold them accountable for non-performance or illegitimate actions.

He mentioned that the government attached high importance to research functions because they were critical for the country’s development and promised to operationalise the Ghana National Research Fund Act (Act 1056).

Passed by Parliament in 2020, the Act is designed to provide sustainable financial support for research activities in universities and research institutions.

The minister hinted that plans were far advanced to have it operationalised to support research activities in the various universities.

“Management structures are being put in place with seed money from GETFund to ensure that the national research fund becomes operational this year,” he said.

The minister commended the Management of UniMAC for its commitment to upholding excellence and for incorporating research as a key area of study.

He assured the Management of UniMAC of the government’s continued support to enable it to train professionals capable of competing both locally and internationally with their peers.

Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, the Vice-Chancellor, UniMAC, said as an institution, it remained committed to equipping graduates with the skills necessary for the 21st century economy.

“Moreover, our alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reinforces our commitment to quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), industry innovation (SDG 9), and reduced inequalities (SDG 10),” he said.

“Through research, policy advocacy, and academic excellence, we remain steadfast in shaping a future where education is the bridge to prosperity,” he added.

Prof Mensah stressed the need for infrastructural expansion, improved student welfare, and enhanced faculty development, appealing to the government to provide support to the school to enable it to achieve that objective.

He urged the graduands to be resilient, adapt to the ever-changing job market and continue to learn to make the impact they desired.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, a Development Communication postgraduate student, Mr James Amoh Junior, described the academic journey as both “transformative and enlightening.”

He said the course provided a deeper understanding of the intersection between communication and sustainable development, equipping students with the tools to drive social change through strategic messaging and storytelling.

“This experience has reshaped the way I approach journalism and communication. It has deepened my commitment to using my platform not just to inform, but to influence policies and empower communities,” he said.

The meeting at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, led by Kafui Danku-Pitcher, Executive Secretary, and James Timothy Gardiner, Deputy Executive Secretary, focused on knowledge-sharing, policy continuity, and industry development.

The session aimed to ensure a seamless transition by tapping into the experiences of the previous board and aligning on strategic priorities to drive Ghana’s film sector forward.

This move is crucial, given the industry’s potential to contribute significantly to the nation’s economy where discussions focused on the achievements, challenges, and ongoing initiatives that require sustained commitment to strengthen the industry’s regulatory framework, funding access, and market expansion.

Madam Kafui Danku-Pitcher expressed appreciation for the former board’s dedication to shaping Ghana’s film landscape.

They stressed the importance of strengthening the Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to establish clear guidelines for industry operations, financing, and content distribution.
