Following his appointment as the substantive captain of the Black Stars, Jordan Ayew says it was meant to happen.
Ayew has been with the Black Stars since 2010, earning more than 100 caps for the team.
Since his debut, the forward has readily made himself available for call-ups and selection, showcasing traits of his brother, Andre Ayew, and father, Abedi Pele.
Walking in the footsteps of the aforementioned (Andre and Abedi), Jordan was named as the first team captain of the Black Stars ahead of March’s international’s, bringing to bed a growing discussion about frequent leadership changes in the team.
Jordan takes over from his brother Andre Ayew, although Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey deputised in his absence.
Speaking to Joy Sports about his new role, Jordan, who is the latest Ayew to wear the armband following his brother and father, said it was unmistakably going to happen.
“I believe in destiny. I believe [becoming Ghana captain] was probably written in the stars,” he said.
Jordan captained Ghana against Angola in the Black Stars’ penultimate game in their underwhelming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Jordan faces his first test as captain when Ghana take on Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Friday.
Former Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, has revealed that the support of the presidency and parliament helped her administration during the much-publicised rift with then Minister for Local Government, Dan Botwe.
In 2023, the Local Government Minister wrote to the president, accusing Naa Torshie of refusing to align in the disbursement of the Common Fund.
However, in an interview with Citi News on Thursday after the vetting of the new acting DACF administrator, Naa Torshie urged Michael Harry Yamson, to collaborate with the Local Government Minister.
“He has to try his best to get some collaboration. But where a minister decides that he’s not going to collaborate with you, his supervising authority is the chief of staff, office of the president. So once the chief of staff agrees to everything he’s doing, and his primary function lies with parliament.
“So with me, I had the speaker, the leadership of parliament, on my side. I had the Jubilee House on my side.
“It actually means that I was doing something right. So he has to look more at that side…Some ministers can decide to be very, very difficult and can decide that I’m not going to budge. The law doesn’t say that the minister is supervising you. You’re to collaborate with him,” she said.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken disciplinary action against former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, referring her to the party’s National Disciplinary Committee over recent media remarks deemed to contravene party directives.
A statement issued on Thursday, March 20, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, indicated that Adwoa Safo’s comments, made on the Pulse Show of Joy News, defied explicit instructions issued to all party members to refrain from public discussions likely to cause disaffection.
“As she is aware, the directive explicitly states that all party members must cease discussing party issues that create unrest, negativism, and disaffection in the media and other related platforms,” the statement read. “Her actions are not only in disregard of this directive but also undermine the Party’s efforts to rebuild and move forward.”
The former legislator, who previously served as Deputy Majority Leader and Minister of State in the erstwhile NPP administration, was expected to uphold party discipline and unity, the statement added.
“Her failure to do so not only reflects poorly on her but also in contravention of Article 3(5) of the Party’s constitution, which, among others, enjoins us to promote and defend the good name of the Party,” it further noted.
In light of this, the party has resolved to refer her case to the National Disciplinary Committee for further action.
The NPP has in recent weeks sought to consolidate party unity following its defeat in the 2024 general elections, cautioning members against public utterances that could deepen internal divisions. The latest action signals the party’s firm stance on maintaining internal discipline ahead of its reorganization efforts.
It remains to be seen what measures the Disciplinary Committee will recommend in response to Adwoa Safo’s conduct.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged its members to refrain from public discussions that could create discontent or division within the party.
A statement dated Thursday, March 20, 2025, and signed by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, acknowledged the frustration among its members following the party’s defeat in the 2024 election.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) acknowledges the disappointment and emotional distress caused by our defeat in the last election. Many of us, as party members, have on several platforms, expressed our anger, disappointment, and frustration.
“However, we humbly ask that all party faithful remain calm so that cooler heads may prevail at this time. As an officer of the Party, mandated by the Party’s Constitution under Article 10(7)(5) to coordinate the activities and operations of the Party; please note that all party members are hereby directed to immediately cease discussing party issues that create unrest, negativism, and disaffection in the media and other related platforms”, it noted.
It warned that party members who flout the directive will face disciplinary action.
“Going forward, the national, regional, and constituency party leadership shall respectively refer any member who violates this directive to the appropriate disciplinary committees of the party”,it added.

Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana rushed out of his box to give his teammate Bryan Mbeumo instructions as the forward prepared to take a free kick.
The four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions faced a spirited Eswatini side on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Although Eswatini had lost all four of their qualifying games, they gave the Indomitable Lions a tough challenge, as the match ended in a goalless draw.
With Cameroon pushing for a win, they earned a free kick just meters from Eswatini’s penalty box. As Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo stepped up to take it, André Onana sprinted from his half to offer last-minute advice on how to execute the set piece.
Unfortunately for Onana, his instructions didn’t yield the desired result, as Mbeumo failed to convert the free kick. Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time the shot-stopper had done something similar.
The Manchester United goalkeeper performed a similar act back in January 2025 during a match against Fulham, where he rushed out to give instructions to Bruno Fernandes.
The draw means Cameroon now occupies second place in their group standings with 9 points. However, they could drop to third if Libya secures a win against Angola on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

An aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer has stated that the recent comments made by former Gender Minister, Adwoa Safo, regarding the party’s post-election review, do not reflect the views of the former Vice President.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM‘s Newsnight on Thursday, March 20, Kofi Tonto, emphasised that while Adwoa Safo has the right to express her opinion, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia firmly believes in allowing the party’s internal structures to function properly.
“I think all Ghanaians, including the Honorable Adwoa Safo, have a right to their opinion. However, that is not the opinion of the former Vice President. He believes very strongly that we should allow structures to work,” he said.

His comments follow Adwoa Safo’s criticism of the election review committee, in which she questioned its credibility, suggesting it was formed to push a specific agenda rather than conduct an impartial review.
She also rejected any attempt to solely blame Dr Bawumia for the party’s electoral defeat, arguing that the process appeared to be manipulated to discredit him.
But Mr Tonto says they would wait for the committee to bring that report on the task assigned, and then “we can review it and assess the pros and cons.”
The Deputy General Secretary of the party, Haruna Mohammed, has criticised Adwoa Safo, for describing the committee investigating the party’s 2024 election loss as “bogus.”
According to him, the committee was established by the National Council, the second-highest decision-making body of the party, to examine the reasons behind the NPP’s defeat in the general elections.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story, he stated that Prof Mike Oquaye is not the committee itself but rather its chairman, leading a group of prominent individuals.
He thus argued that it was inappropriate for Adwoa Safo to label the committee as “bogus.”
Meanwhile, the former Dome Kwabenya MP has been officially referred to the National Disciplinary Committee of the NPP for further action following her recent media engagements.
In a statement issued and signed by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, it said Adwoa Safo’s recent media engagement violated the party’s directives.

President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the killing of a military officer in Bawku, as well as the reported military retaliation that left several residents, including women and children, injured.
He condemned the incidents when he visited the Upper East Region on Thursday, 20th March 2025, as part of his “Thank You Tour.”
President Mahama stressed “I wish to take this opportunity to condemn the killing of a member of the Ghana army recently in Bawku. The members of the Ghana Armed Forces in the conflict zone are peacekeepers who have been sent there to protect life, limb, and property.
“It is unacceptable for them to become targets of a conflict to which they are not a party to. I, in the same vein, wish to condemn the high-handed response of our men in uniform, which resulted in assaults and injuries of many innocent civilians.
“I can understand the righteous anger at the loss of a colleague serviceman, but we must exercise restraint and use effective intelligence gathering to identify and bring the culprits to book.
“I wish, on this occasion, to extend my condolence to the family of the deceased soldier and, at the same time, to extend my sympathies to all those who were assaulted or injured in the military counteraction.
“The progress of our nation depends on the shared effort of all its people towards a common purpose and a collective vision for prosperity. The Upper East Region, like every other part of Ghana, deserves its fair share of development.
The President also lauded the Asantehene for his mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict and called on the factions involved to cooperate with the Otumfuo.

Warrants are for lawful searches, not to steal food, money – Franklin Cudjoe
President of the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, has accused former Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor and his close associates of corruption and fraudulent practices related to the issuance of small-scale mining licences.
In an interview on , Peprah revealed that personal assistants and individuals closely associated with the former minister were allegedly demanding $10,000 to sign licences for small-scale miners.
This practice reportedly emerged after the large-scale revocation of licences and the ban on small-scale mining imposed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Peprah claimed that despite some miners having legitimately acquired their licences years ago, these were revoked and converted into community mining operations.
He added that attempts to restore these licences or apply for new ones were unsuccessful because the former minister refused to sign them, forcing some individuals to exploit the situation for personal gain.
“People had acquired their licences two and four years ago legally, but they were revoked and turned into community mining; we complained, but they never listened,” he stated. “When Abu Jinapor became minister, all the applications sent to him were not signed, so his PAs and some people close to him demanded $10,000 to sign them. These were not payments to the government, but to certain individuals to enrich themselves.”
Peprah emphasized that there were individuals who could corroborate his claims and challenged anyone to deny them.
These accusations come amid recent developments surrounding the revocation of small-scale mining licences.
Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced the cancellation of all licences issued after December 7, 2024, due to irregularities in the process.
This decision follows recommendations from key regulatory bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Forestry Commission, and the Water Resources Commission, as part of efforts to combat illegal mining, known as .
Accra, March 20, GNA – The Ghana Police Service is reviving all the regional public relations offices to help counter false narratives and ensure accurate information reaches the public, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), said on Thursday.
To respond to the demands of the citizenry and public expectations, it was critical the Police Service’s communication outfit remained robust, transparent and effective, he noted.
“It is upon this premise that the current police administration under my leadership will reactivate and revive all regional police public Affairs offices to interact to meet the ever-evolving demands of our society and media partners,” he said.
The IGP was speaking at the opening of a three-day training for Regional and Unit Public Affairs Officers from across the country at the Police Training School in Accra.
He said it was the collective administrative efforts of the Service to revamp and strengthen the public affairs arm of the Service in an era marked by widespread misinformation and disinformation, especially through social media.
“The evolution of policing, the Service, like any law enforcement institution worldwide, has undergone significant transformations to adapt to the political, social and cultural dynamics of society,” Mr Yohuno said.
Policing, he said, was integral to maintaining order in any civilised societies, ensuring crime prevention, investigation, apprehension of offenders and administration of justice.
He said crime combat was a shared responsibility and required community partnership, thus the need to foster positive interactions for effective policing.
“It also involves the development of robust interpersonal skills, requiring constant reassessment of police-public relations frameworks to adapt to changing circumstances,” he added.
The IGP said in times when the public demanded greater involvement and accountability in service delivery, a well-tested approach ensured police legitimacy and built public confidence.
That was where their significant role as public affairs officers in fostering positive interactions with the public becomes essential and directly impacts police effectiveness.
He urged them to be guided by the core and ethical values of the Ghana Police Service as they interacted with the media.
Mr Yohuno said they should protect confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information, balancing it with openness and transparency, ensure credibility, integrity, impartiality and ensure constituency.
Meanwhile the training will equip them with the new administration’s vision and refine their strategies, among others.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mrs Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, said the units across the country were ready to work together to harmonise their public communication to ensure consistent messaging.
Some past directors of the Public Affairs Directorate-PAD, including Mr David Sena Eklu and Mr Kwesi Ofori will serve as resource persons for the training.
Ghanaian gospel singer, Broda Sammy has expressed concerns about certain practices in the gospel music industry.
According to him, there is a division within the industry as some artistes refuse to work with others based on language and personal preferences.
During an interview on the ‘Asetena Pa’ show with Akoto Mansa, Broda Sammy pointed out a trend where certain gospel musicians, especially those who compose songs in English, prefer to only collaborate with other artistes who also sing in English.
“In this industry, some people pretend to be united, but they only work with those who speak English or share their beliefs. If you’re not part of their circle, they won’t even consider collaborating with you,” he said.
When asked about potential collaborations with well-known gospel artistes like Diana Hamilton and Kofi Owusu Peprah, Broda Sammy stated that while he is open to working with them, he would not initiate the process.
“If they reach out, I have no issue, but I won’t go to them. I’ve seen how this industry operates, and I won’t beg anyone for a collaboration,” he explained.
Broda Sammy also criticised what he perceives as hypocrisy within the gospel community, noting that while many artistes publicly promote Christian values, what they do in private is different from what they preach.

An aide to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has affirmed their trust in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) leadership and its decision to set up a committee to review the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Joy FM‘s Newsnight on Thursday, March 20, he explained that the committee’s formation was a collective decision, and questioning its credibility would be contradictory.
“Well, first of all, the party has instituted a committee, and we trust the judgment of the party. When the party meets to take such a decision, leaders of the party are present.
“So how can we be part of a decision to constitute a committee and then come out to say otherwise?” he stated.
He, however, clarified that trusting the committee does not necessarily mean agreeing with every aspect of its report but rather respecting the process.
Mr Tonto assured that Dr Bawumia’s team has no intention of questioning the integrity of the committee. However, they will thoroughly examine the report when it is released and raise concerns where necessary.
“What we will do is that once the report comes, we will take an extensive look at it. If we have concerns, we will address them accordingly,” he added.

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has criticized the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) committee established to investigate the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections, labeling it as lacking credibility and being agenda-driven.
She alleged that the committee was deliberately formed to push a specific agenda rather than conduct an impartial fact-finding mission.
Speaking during an interview with Joy FM, Adwoa Safo asserted, “It is a very bogus committee. A committee that is put together just to find certain facts and push a particular candidate away from the candidacy so that we can bring our own, you call that a credible fact-finding committee?”.
Adwoa Safo specifically questioned the appointment of Prof. Mike Oquaye as the committee’s chairman, citing a potential conflict of interest.
She challenged Prof. Oquaye to first address the reasons behind his son, Mike Oquaye Junior’s loss of the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat before assessing the party’s overall electoral performance.
Safo argued that the party should have selected a more neutral and experienced individual to lead the committee, suggesting that the current leadership undermines the committee’s objectivity and effectiveness.
“If Prof Mike Oquaye thinks he has integrity and credibility, I want to see the first page of his fact-finding report explaining why his son Mike Oquaye Junior lost the Dome-Kwabenya seat. If he does that with transparency, without bias or prejudice, then I will accept any findings he presents against Dr Bawumia. Otherwise, that report will not hold in this party.
“His son has lost, and you think he is the best person to lead a fact-finding committee that includes that very constituency? Why not choose an independent person? Couldn’t we find anyone else in the party to chair it?” Adwo Safo asked.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah has officially assumed her new role as Technical Advisor to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.
Photographs from her first day at the Ministry captured her beaming with smiles as she engaged with the Minister and other officials.
Muntaka warmly welcomed her and emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving the Ministry’s mandate. He added that looked forward to working together to achieve the mandate of the Ministry.
COP Addo-Danquah, in response, expressed her appreciation for the warm reception and pledged her commitment to supporting the Ministry’s objectives.
Swift reassignment
Her move to the Interior Ministry comes barely a day after she was initially named Director-General of Research & Planning at the Ghana Police Service. In a sudden turn of events, a directive from the Presidency reassigned her to the new role, effective immediately.
A letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, confirmed the decision.
“In line with this directive, you are hereby reassigned from your current position to the Ministry of the Interior, where you will serve as the Technical Advisor to the Honorable Minister. This reassignment takes immediate effect, and you are expected to liaise with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth transition into your new role,” the statement read.
The letter further acknowledged her service, stating: “His Excellency the President recognizes and deeply appreciates your unwavering dedication, professionalism, and invaluable contributions to the nation. It is his firm belief that your expertise and commitment will continue to serve the country effectively in your new capacity.”
COP Addo-Danquah’s reassignment is part of a broader restructuring within the Ghana Police Service under the leadership of new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno. The latest shake-up is aimed at strengthening leadership and improving operational efficiency within the Police Management Board (POMAB).
Prior to this development, COP Addo-Danquah had returned to the Police Service after a tenure as Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where she spearheaded efforts to combat financial crimes and corruption. She also previously served as Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), playing a key role in high-profile investigations.
In her new position at the Interior Ministry, she is expected to work closely with key stakeholders to enhance security policies and strategies aimed at improving law enforcement operations in Ghana.
Member of Parliament for Suame and Counsel for the Minority Caucus, John Darko, has strongly criticized the arrest of media personality Okatakyie Afrifa, questioning the rationale behind the move and the treatment he received while in detention.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Thursday, Mr. Darko expressed his disapproval of the actions taken by national security, particularly their justification for arresting Afrifa under the pretext of seeking his assistance in combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
“What was the basis for arresting Okatakyie Afrifa?” Mr. Darko asked. “After threatening him with handcuffs, after arresting him, keeping him in national security custody for over three hours or four hours, we are told that he was supposed to help the national security to fight galamsey.
“What are you talking about? Are you asking a private citizen right now to come and help you fight galamsey when you are the national security institution that has all the available information, all the available tools to conduct your investigation? You come to a private citizen to help.”
He further criticized the justification provided, arguing that it exposed a lack of planning and accountability within the national security apparatus.
“You know why they are saying this—because they realized that they had guffed so much. There was no reason to arrest the gentleman,” he stated.
Mr. Darko urged the public to resist such actions, stressing the need to uphold fairness and protect societal values.
“We should resist that… We need to do that to save our society,” he said.

Former NPP parliamentary candidate for Dome/Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jnr
The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Dome/Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jnr has refuted claims made by former Member of Parliament for the area, Sarah Adwoa Safo that he disrespected her father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, March 20, 2025, he emphasized that such actions do not align with his upbringing and values.
“I have and will never insult anyone’s father. My paternal Grandfather is a farmer, I am myself a part time farmer. I have never and will never do that. That is not how I was brought up and those who know me, know that I eschew insults”, it stated.
It also dismissed claims that he ignored the former Chief of Staff, Frema Osei-Opare and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other persons who reached out to him.
“I will never snub the then President, Chief of staff or any elderly person who calls me to see them. That is the trait of disrespect, and I am not like that. I have historically shown that for me it is always party first”, it indicated.
The statement clarified that he made attempts to reach out to Sarah Adwoa Safo after he won the parliamentary primaries.
“I tried on three occasions to reach out to my opponent after I won the primaries. Madam Sheela responded and we chat till today. I was rebuffed by the other person and her special assistant Nana Dubin told me after three weeks of trying that she didn’t want to speak to me. How then will I have been welcome to attend her church?
“For now, I leave the rest of the matters to God for he will fight for me.
I will never malign the party or any individual who calls me to see them. That is the trait of disrespect, and I am not like that. I have historically shown that for me it is always party first”, it added.

Ghana face an uphill task against Chad on Friday, March 21, 2025, when the two meet at the Accra Sports Stadium for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
Chad’s failure to secure any points from their four games so far and Ghana’s quest for redemption make the four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions the favorites going into the game.
However, if there’s any team in recent years that has proven capable of faltering under pressure and letting the moment overwhelm them, it’s the Black Stars.
As such, they must be wary of the Chad team, especially these three key players.
Mahamat Thiam
Born in France, Mahamat Thiam chose to represent Chad and has featured in Chad’s last seven games, dating back to June 2024.
His versatility makes the former Kolkheti 1913 defensive midfielder a force to be reckoned with.
Since his debut for Les Sao in March 2024, Thiam has been used in multiple roles on the pitch, including as a left-back. He has scored one goal in nine appearances for Chad.
Frederic Djoeta
The midfielder was part of Elect Sport’s team that suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ghana Premier League club, Nsoatreman, in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2024.
At just 21 years of age, Djoeta’s robustness in midfield should be a concern for the Black Stars. The 21-year-old made his debut for Chad in 2023, at the age of 20, and has since made four appearances for Les Sao.
His defensive skills and ability to spot danger have contributed to Elect Sport conceding just 17 goals in 21 games in the Chad Premiere Division.
Gabkala Daba
Another youngster on the team, Gabkala Daba has consistently demonstrated his potential whenever he steps onto the pitch.
Playing for AS Psi, the team has conceded just 16 goals in 20 games in the Chad Premiere Division. Psi has also kept three clean sheets in their last five games, with Daba playing crucial roles in those matches.
His ability to anticipate danger and deliver precise crosses could prove pivotal for Chad against the Black Stars on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has defended her decision to oppose the controversial Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy), emphasizing that it was a major factor in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral loss.
In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, March 20, Adwoa Safo explained why she refused to support the policy, arguing that it failed to fulfill its intended purpose and instead placed an undue burden on Ghanaians.
The Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area in Daboya in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region, Wasipewura Mumuni Anyame Kabasagya II, has reacted to the exodus of some settler farmers from his jurisdiction.
He stated that his attention had been drawn to a circulating video on social media suggesting that some settler farmers were fleeing the area for fear of attacks by indigenes.
In a press statement signed by the Secretary to the Wasipe Traditional Council on Wednesday, March 19, the chief asserted that the video, which he had obtained, was deliberately orchestrated to damage the long-standing relationship between his office and the settler farming community.
“This palace has taken cognisance of the entire content of the video and wishes to state that it is a deliberate attempt to destroy the longstanding relationship we have enjoyed with the settler farmers in the area.”
He further emphasised that the Wasipe Traditional Area has coexisted peacefully with settler farmers for centuries, without any major conflicts.
However, investigations revealed that some of the departing farmers were those who had deliberately refused to pay royalties to the Yiram, Wasipewura, and instead chose to pay them to chiefs outside the Wasipe Traditional Area.
“We have lived in harmony with our settler brothers and sisters in this area for centuries without any major issues.
“Our enquiries have proven that any settler farmer choosing to leave is among those who deliberately refused to pay royalties to Yiram, Wasipewura, but opted to pay to chiefs outside the Wasipe Traditional Area,” the chief stated.
Wasipewura Kabasagya II also expressed concern that some of these farmers no longer recognise his authority as the rightful custodian of the land.
“More severely, some of these settler farmers have withdrawn their recognition of the Wasipewura as the allodial titleholder of the land on which they are farming,” he lamented.
Despite these developments, the chief assured the general public that his palace remains at peace with all other tribes in the area.
He reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the peaceful coexistence that has been enjoyed over the years.

A U.S. court has awarded Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million (£14 million) in damages after a jury ruled that he was defamed by former Ghanaian MP Kennedy Agyapong.
The case stems from remarks Agyapong made following Anas’s 2018 BBC investigation, which exposed corruption in Ghanaian and international football.
During the trial, the court heard that Agyapong, in a podcast episode, had labelled Anas a “criminal” and accused him of being involved in the murder of fellow journalist Ahmed Suale, BBC reported.
Anas had previously lost a similar legal battle in Ghana seven years ago. However, after the podcast episode was released in 2021, he pursued legal action in the U.S. state of New Jersey, where Agyapong owns the property.
Last week’s initial verdict was upheld on Tuesday, with an eight-member jury in Essex County Superior Court, New Jersey, unanimously ruling that Agyapong was liable for defamation.
The court awarded Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million in damages, including $8 million in punitive damages.
The journalist, who has received multiple international awards for his investigative reporting, has vowed to continue his fight against corruption and hold wrongdoers accountable.
“Justice has prevailed. This victory is not just for me, but for truth, press freedom, and every journalist who risks everything to expose corruption and wrongdoing,” Anas said in response.
“No amount of intimidation or falsehood will silence the pursuit of accountability even in the face of assassination. Our work continues, undeterred and unafraid.”
Agyapong appealed for a reduction but it was denied. Agyapong’s lawyers argued unsuccessfully that the case should not have been tried in the U.S. They also claimed that his comments on the podcast were merely hyperbole and opinion, not grounds for a defamation lawsuit.
Bui Power Authority made profits in the last five years
In recent times, the Minister of Finance and other stakeholders have lamented the rate of losses being recorded by State Owned Enterprises in Ghana.
Sharing his thoughts on this development, the Acting Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Professor Michael Kpessa-Whyte, has disclosed that there are some others who have been making profits and paying dividends to the state in the past five years.
According to him, despite the challenges that SOEs are facing in Ghana, Bui Power Authority, ESLA PLC, Ghana Gas, Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, TDC Company, and State Housing Company have consistently posted profits while paying dividends to the state from 2019 to 2023.
“It’s not all bad news. The best-performing SOEs include Bui Power Authority, ESLA PLC, Ghana Gas, Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, TDC Company, and State Housing Company. From 2019 to 2023, they have consistently made profits and contributed dividends to the state,” he was quoted by citinewsroom.com to have said.
On the flip side, he said Ghana’s 10 largest State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) by asset base recorded a net loss of GH¢11 billion in 2023.
He said this figure exceeds the combined losses of all 53 SOEs while adding that this compounds their financial limitations.
Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) accounted for GH¢10 billion of the losses, while Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) recorded a GH¢3 billion shortfall.
“10 SOEs with the most assets recorded an aggregate net loss of GH¢11 billion in the financial year 2023, which surpasses the total loss of all 53 SOEs. ECG alone accounted for GH¢10 billion,” he stated.
Meanwhile, President John Mahama has warned the CEOs of SOEs against mismanagement of financial resources.
He said he would not hesitate to relieve non-performing CEOs of their positions.
England international Lucy Bronze has revealed that she was diagnosed with autism and ADHD four years ago, confirming long-held suspicions by her mother.
Despite winning almost every major accolade in women’s football—including 22 trophies with clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, Lyon, Barcelona, and Chelsea—Bronze has always felt different.
As a child, she tried to mimic her teammates’ behavior to fit in, unaware of the neurodivergence shaping her experiences.
A Euro 2022 winner and 2023 World Cup runner-up with England, the 2019 Ballon d’Or runner-up has become an inspiration to millions. However, she now understands that achievements alone do not define a person.
Speaking exclusively to BBC Sport ahead of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, the 33-year-old opened up for the first time about her diagnosis and how it has impacted both her personal life and career. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage others, especially young athletes, to embrace their unique journeys.
Aboubakar Ouattara is the head coach of Hearts of Oak
Under-fire Hearts of Oak coach, Aboubakar Ouattara has slammed a journalist in response to remarks about the club’s ambitions.
Hearts of Oak suffered their second defeat in just four days, falling to Bechem United on Wednesday, March 19, 2025—a significant setback in their pursuit of the Ghana Premier League title.
When questioned about his side’s target for the season following the loss, the seasoned tactician lashed out at the reporter, emphasizing that there are still many games left to decide the league winner.
“Have I told you that our ambition is to win the league? This is not Makola Market. There are 12 matches left, which means 36 points are still up for grabs. We’re playing the game, this is a league. Don’t judge now; let us finish the season first. On June 8th, we will talk about the league,” he said.
The defeat drops Hearts of Oak to fifth in the league standings, four points behind leaders Bibiani Gold Stars—the very team they face this weekend, March 23, 2025, at Bibiani.

Ghana has been ranked as the 125th happiest country in the world, and 19th in Africa, in a surprising 2025 World Happiness Report.
Ghana, with a score of 4.340 on the World Happiness Index, was ranked below 18 other African countries, including known conflict zones such as Somalia and Chad, and neighbors Nigeria, Benin, and Burkina Faso.
The ranking was a drop from 2024, when Ghana was ranked the 120th happiest country in the world.
Ghana has steadily dropped in the rankings since 2021, when it peaked at 91st in the world with a Happiness Index score of 5.148. As most Ghanaians know, the previous NPP government completely lost the plot in 2022 after major corruption scandals during COVID and unchecked spending towards the 2020 elections. In December 2022, Ghana experienced its worst economic period in years, with inflation reaching a staggering 54%. The cost of living skyrocketed and the standard of living sharply fell. The country never recovered, leading to the NPP party being wiped out in the 2024 elections.
All this has led to Ghana’s decline, leading to a current ranking below many countries Ghanaians would be shocked about. Below is the 2025 World Happiness Report for Africa.

Entertainment pundit, MC Yaa Yeboah, has called out former Guinness World Records Sing-a-thon contender, Afua Asantewaa, accusing her of dishonesty and ingratitude regarding her use of state funds for the event.
Yeboah’s comments come in response to Asantewaa’s recent statements, where she denied receiving government support, stating that she only received sore throat lozenges.
She later admitted to receiving some donations after being called out by some New Patriotic Party members.
In a submission on Peace FM, MC Yaa Yeboah challenged Asantewaa’s claims, pointing out that the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) spent state funds to make the venue conducive for her Sing-a-thon attempt.
“She is actually dishonest. I’m saying that because if you listen to the statement she put on her social media, she was saying people are bitter because they believe she used state funds.
“But the venue she did her Sing-a-thon, wasn’t it state funds that sponsored it? Where did the money the GTA spent on making the place conducive for her attempt come from? Wasn’t it state funds?
“So, from the onset, she’s decided to be ungrateful and dishonest. She has been lying to Ghanaians about everything,” Yeboah said.
The pundit also criticised Asantewaa for blaming her team members after her disqualification from the Guinness World Records attempt.
“After the Sing-a-thon, she had been blaming her team members for her disqualification. How do you think her team would feel?” Yeboah asked.
MC Yaa Yeboah also condemned Asantewaa’s behaviour so far, claiming that it would have been better if she had remained silent about the whole affair.
“If she had kept silent, it would have been better. When she came to drag Socrate Safo over the money matter, she knew that she had received money. So, why would she set up a man like Dr Bawumia?
“If it was a private event sponsored by her money, nobody would have cared. But as long as she used state money, she owed Ghanaians an explanation,” she said.

The family of the late Getrude Essie Quashigah, a former National Coordinator the School Feeding Program, have debunked allegations made by former Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, regarding mismanagement of the program during their mother’s tenure.
In a statement issued by the family, dated Thursday, March 20, 2025, they described the allegations as untrue.
“We, the family and children of the Late Madam Gertrude Essie Quashigah, have noted with great sadness and disappointment the recent allegations made by former Minister for Gender, Sarah Adwoa Safo, regarding the supposed mismanagement of the Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP) during our mother’s tenure as National Coordinator.
“Our mother, who served as National Coordinator of the GSFP from 2019 until her untimely passing in 2023, carried out her responsibilities with the highest levels of integrity, dedication, and selflessness. Under her stewardship, the Program witnessed remarkable expansion, touching the lives of thousands of Ghanaian schoolchildren and significantly improving nutrition and welfare standards across the country,” it stated.
It further indicated that such allegations have caused distress to the family.
“It is deeply painful that such unfounded and unfortunate accusations are being levelled against our mother at a time when she is no longer present to speak for herself. These remarks have caused distress not only to us, her children, but to all who respected her contributions to national development.
“We are particularly disheartened given the historical relationship between our late father, Major Courage Quashigah (Rtd), and Safo’s father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo. Both families have shared bonds rooted in mutual respect and public service, making these claims all the more disappointing”, it added.
The family, through their statement, urged the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya to apologise to the family.
“We respectfully call on Sarah Adwoa Safo to retract her statement, issue an unqualified apology, and refrain from further casting aspersions on the legacy of our late mother. We urge her to consider the pain such remarks have caused to our grieving family and to all who hold Madam Gertrude Quashigah’s memory dear”, it added.

Minister of Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George
The Minister of Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has supported the Bank of Ghana’s statement that MTN MoMo has not been licensed to conduct cross-border transactions.
He noted that despite the government’s commitment to creating a seamless and inclusive financial ecosystem, the industry remains regulated.
In a post on X, sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation stated that his ministry is committed to fostering a favorable ecosystem that safeguards the investments of Ghanaians.
“I have received several frantic calls from players in Ghana’s fintech ecosystem, deeply worried about a statement circulating today that @MTNGhana and @MTNNG have commenced cross-border payments. Despite our commitment to a seamless and inclusive financial ecosystem, there are regulations for the industry. My checks with @thebankofghana indicate that no such license has been issued for cross-border payments.
“We will work with all stakeholders as the Ministry for Digital Technology to ensure a favorable ecosystem that protects investments, supports innovation, and offers the best products to our citizens,” part of his tweet said.
The Bank of Ghana, while clarifying the matter, indicated that it had granted Brij Fintech Ghana, a licensed Payment Service Provider, approval to pilot BrijX—a B2B Currency Swap Platform—under its regulatory sandbox program.
The platform is designed as a digital marketplace, collaborating with banks, Mobile Money operators, and licensed PSPs to facilitate direct currency swaps between the Ghanaian Cedi and the Nigerian Naira without the need for forex or the physical movement of funds across borders.
The pilot, which was approved in 2024, began live testing in February 2025, with MoMo customers and will soon extend to G-Money customers.

Black Stars coach Otto Addo appears to be impressed with Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, hinting that the shot-stopper could start against Chad on Friday, March 21, 2025.
He praised Asare’s quality, noting that the former Great Olympics goalkeeper has shown a high level at training and thus deserved his call-up.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the German-trained coach said he had not yet decided who would start in goal, noting that the technical team would make a final decision after their last training session.
“Benjamin Asare has done well; otherwise, we wouldn’t have called him. He has performed well in training, just like the others. We will make the decision after training, so let’s see what happens,” Addo stated.
Explaining Asare’s inclusion in the squad, Addo emphasized that performance remains the key metric for his selections.
“With me, it’s always about performance. It doesn’t matter which position, it’s always performance that counts.
“I listen and hear many opinions, but in the end, I make the decision together with Fatau [Dauda, the goalkeepers’ trainer].”
Benjamin Asare is one of three debutants in the squad and among three locally-based players.
The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper has been in sensational form this season, keeping 12 clean sheets—more than any other goalkeeper—and conceding just one goal in his last seven games across all competitions.

Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has strongly condemned the raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.
The alleged operation, carried out by national security operatives on Wednesday, March 19, at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home in Accra, reportedly involved disabling the CCTV system before conducting a search.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin claimed that money, as well as the governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces, were missing following the raid.
Reacting to the incident, Mr. Cudjoe criticized the misuse of search warrants, stressing that they should only be employed for lawful searches—not as a cover for vandalism, theft, or other misconduct.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, March 20, Franklin Cudjoe stated, “It is embarrassing for the Majority Leader of the ruling government to be rendering apologies on behalf of state-sponsored thugs who raid the home of citizens.
“In a civilised country, warrants secured are for lawful searches, not to vandalise property, steal food, money and jewelry.”
The family and children of the late Madam Gertrude Quashigah, daughter of the late Major (Rtd) Courage Quashigah, have fired back at Adwoa Safo following her recent claims of corruption against the deceased.
Madam Quashigah, who was the National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), was ‘exposed’ by the former Dome Kwabenya MP during a radio interview.
Adwoa Safo claimed that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo tasked her with auditing the school feeding program. Adwoa Safo said the rot she discovered within the program was astonishing however, when she took her results to the President, he did nothing.
Safo claims that during her audit, Madam Quashigah approached her and offered to bribe her by creating ghost schools that they could charge the government for and make millions!
Her claims sparked outrage online and the family of the late School feeding coordinator have released a statement denying Adwoa Safo’s claims.
The family said their late relative carried out her duties with “the highest levels of integrity, dedication, and selflessness,” They called on Adwoa Safo to render an unqualified apology for her comments about the late Madam Quashigah.

Another said: “The way every Ghanaian become righteous immediately after he/she dies,I don’t think any Ghanaian will enter hellfire,”

Ms Akua Mensah, a 28-year-old fashion designer, echoed Kofi’s sentiments, “As a fashion designer, I’m always investigating how to improve my craft and stay up-to-date with the latest trends.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred its former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, to the disciplinary committee for violating party directives.
The party’s decision stems from Adwoa Safo’s recent interview, where she discussed internal party matters publicly, despite a directive for members to refrain from such actions.
A statement signed by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua highlighted that Adwoa Safo was expected to set a positive example for others.
However, her comments have been viewed as undermining the party’s efforts to rebuild and move forward after the emotional distress and disappointment members experienced following the party’s defeat in the last election.
The NPP reiterated the importance of unity and calm as it focuses on its recovery and future success.

Defeated Dome Kwabenya MP aspirant, Mike Oquaye Jnr has refuted claims by former Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, that he disrespected her father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo, during his campaign.

Accra, March 20, GNA – Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thursday said the report on extinction of some African Languages within a century should be a source of worry to all.
He said language was the embodiment of a people’s culture and identity hence African’s should be concerned over the extinction of some of its languages spoken by smaller communities.
Mr Ablakwa said this at a flag raising ceremony in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary of International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) in Accra.
The OIF is an organisation, which comprised 93 member states and governments with a mission to promote the French Language, cultural and linguistic diversity, peace, and democracy, among other things.
Mr Ablakwa said Africa was a hub of linguistic and cultural wealth, accounting for approximately one-third of the world’s languages.
“However, the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger estimates that up to 10 per cent of African languages, particularly those spoken by small communities, could disappear within a century. This must be a source of worry for all of us,” he said.
He, therefore, called on governments across Africa to consciously promote multilingualism, including indigenous languages, as a tool for unity, peace, and sustainable development.
Promoting multiligualism would foster social cohesion, inclusivity and sustainable development.
He reiterated the Government’s commitment to institutionalising and promoting the use of first languages as the medium of teaching and learning in the early years of education and care in Ghana.
“We will, in addition, incorporate indigenous knowledge, traditions, and stories into teaching and learning materials to make learning more meaningful for our children,” Mr Ablakwa said.
“We are convinced that this is one of the surest ways of preserving our indigenous languages and culture while maximising educational outcomes among our learners,” he indicated.
DopeNation are said to have not submitted their songs for the TGMAs
The Head of Communications and Public Events at Charterhouse Productions, Robert Klah, has clarified why Ghanaian music duo, DopeNation, was excluded from this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) nominations.
Speaking on Hitz FM on March 19, 2025, Klah shared that despite the massive success of their hit song, Zormizor, during the year under review, the duo failed to submit the track for consideration.
He also confirmed that the group was indeed reached out to, but they did not engage with the organisers.
“One would expect that on a platform like this, in the year under review, their place would certainly be established. Unfortunately, when there was no filing, and we tried to reach out for consent, we couldn’t get it,” he stated.
The explanation comes following comments by DopeNation explaining their absence from the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) nominees list.
Entertainment pundit, DJ Slim, questioned whether the duo failed to file for nominations or respond to the awards’ research team.
In a cryptic response, DopeNation stated that they have been dealing with deeper, undisclosed issues within the music industry, choosing to remain silent out of respect for certain individuals.
They referenced their 2021 concerns when the ‘Group of the Year’ category was removed and concluded with a warning that the industry risks losing its “true artistes.”
play videoThe French teachers in the GhanaWeb studio on International Francophonie Day
On the occasion of International Francophonie Day, French teachers have called for an increase in the desire to learn the language in Ghana.
Francophonie Day is an important occasion celebrated worldwide, recognising the richness of the French language and the diverse cultures of French-speaking communities.
In Ghana, efforts to promote French education have grown over the years, yet challenges remain.
The CEO of Ghana Online French Lessons for Kids/Adults and Corporate, Mildred Frimpong, said parents must get involved to push their children and encourage them to learn French.
She noted that her ability to teach the language allowed her to teach and make a living when she lost her job as a banker.
A lecturer at the Modern Languages Department of UniMAC-Institute of Languages, Emmanuel Kwasi Owusu, also urged tertiary institutions to create exchange programme opportunities for their students to give them access to visit French-speaking countries.
Also, the Head of FRANCOZONE, CREF (Regional Centers for the Teaching of French), Daniel Kwao Awaitey, noted that learning French should be simplified to make the language attractive to Ghanaians.
He said Ghana is now a full member of Francophonie and has no excuse not to encourage its members to learn.
Monsieur Kedzi, a teacher at the Christian Vine School, said teachers have found modern ways to teach French, a practice that has enhanced its study in recent times.
They spoke to GhanaWeb’s Stella Dziedzorm Sogli on March 20, 2025, which marked International Francophonie Day.
The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Ghana has expressed concern over the 16.1% revenue-to-GDP ratio projected in the 2025 budget, arguing it lacks ambition as it is only marginally higher than the 15.9% for 2024.
In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, the Institute noted that by closing several tax loopholes and implementing other measures, the Government could significantly increase the nation’s revenue-to-GDP ratio.
The statement outlined the IEA’s views on the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy presented to Parliament by the finance minister on March 11.
The Institute noted that Ghana’s revenue-to-GDP ratio remained well below the average of 25 to 30 per cent for its peer middle-income countries.
Earlier, the IEA had proposed the abolition of the Growth and Sustainability Tax (GST), which was first introduced in 2001 as the Fiscal Stability Tax, describing it as obsolete.
However, the Government decided to maintain the GST in the 2025 Budget, increasing the rate from one per cent to three per cent for extractive companies.
The IEA argued that Ghana should demand more revenue from the extractives sector, including implementing a Super-Profit or Windfall Tax, and noted that the three per cent GST rate was not high enough.
The Institute advocated for a review of existing laws to enable the country to demand more favorable fiscal regimes from its extractives sector to maximise its benefits.
Regarding the elimination of certain taxes, the IEA welcomed the Government’s decision to abolish nuisance or obsolete taxes, including the E-Levy, Emissions Tax, and COVID Tax.
It however expressed disappointment that, contrary to its suggestion to maintain the Betting Tax at a reduced rate of 5 per cent (down from 10 per cent) for both revenue and deterrence purposes, the Government decided to abolish it completely.
Presenting the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy, Finance Minister Dr. Casiel Ato Forson announced several measures aimed at boosting revenue generation and achieving the fiscal targets for 2025.
The Minister also highlighted the removal of certain nuisance taxes in line with the Government’s manifesto promise.
These eliminations were intended to ease the burden on households, improve disposable incomes, support business growth, and enhance tax compliance.

Workers at the Accra Sports Stadium carrying out maintenance work (3Sports photo)
Construction is still underway at the Accra Sports Stadium, with only hours remaining before the venue hosts Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifying game against Chad on Friday, March 21, 2025.
This has raised concerns about the readiness of the stadium, with some fans questioning whether it will be in proper condition for the game.
Earlier this week, National Sports Authority (NSA) boss, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, stated that based on advice from the workers, certain sections of the stadium would be closed off to fans.
However, he assured the public that the venue would be ready in time for matchday.
Nonetheless, a video shared by 3Sports in the late hours of Thursday, March 20, 2025, indicates that maintenance work is still ongoing.
The footage shows renovation efforts on the stairs leading to the VIP and media sections of the stadium.
Following Madagascar’s win on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, the Black Stars now sit third in the standings with nine points, trailing Madagascar and Comoros, who occupy the first and second spots, respectively.
Anything short of a victory could hinder the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. As such, head coach Otto Addo will hope his team can perform at their very best.

Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says he wants to have negotiations over access to the sea
Landlocked Ethiopia has no intention of starting a war with neighbouring Eritrea in order to gain access to the sea, the country’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said.
A previous statement, in 2023, that having a seaport was an “existential issue” for the nation sparked concerns that the Ethiopia could take one by force.
Abiy’s comments to parliament on Thursday came amid fresh concerns that the neighbours, which have had a fractious relationship in the past, could be involved in a conflict again.
The prime minister said the issue of sea access for the world’s most populous landlocked nation should be resolved through diplomacy and mutual benefit.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to its National Disciplinary Committee over her recent media remarks on the party’s 2024 electoral defeat.
This follows the NPP’s earlier directive cautioning members against public statements that could create division within the party.
In a statement on Thursday, March 20, 2025, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong stated that Adwoa Safo’s comments defied party directives and undermined efforts to rebuild.
“As she is aware, the directive explicitly states that all party members must cease discussing party issues that create unrest, negativism, and disaffection in the media and other related platforms. Her actions are not only in disregard of this directive but also undermine the Party’s efforts to rebuild and move forward.
“As a former Member of Parliament, Former Deputy Majority Leader, and Former Minister of State under the erstwhile NPP government, she was expected to set a good example and adhere to the principles of discipline, loyalty and unity that have always defined our great party.
“Her failure to do so not only reflects poorly on her but also in contravention of Article 3(5) of the Party’s constitution, which, among others enjoins us to promote ar.d defend the good name of the Party.
“In breach of the above provision of the Party’s constitution and the directives issued earlier, Hon Sarah Adwoa Sarfo is hereby referred to the National Disciplinary Committee of the Party for rusher action.”

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has strongly criticised the committee set up by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to investigate its 2024 election defeat, calling it “bogus” and lacking credibility.
According to her, the committee was deliberately formed to push a specific agenda rather than conduct an impartial fact-finding mission.
It is a very bogus committee. A committee that is put together just to find certain facts and push a particular candidate away from the candidacy so that we can bring our own you call that a credible fact-finding committee?” she questioned.
Adwoa Safo particularly took issue with the choice of Prof Mike Oquaye as the committee’s chair, citing a conflict of interest. She challenged him to explain why his son, Mike Oquaye Junior lost the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat before passing judgment on the party’s defeat.
Otherwise, that report will not hold in this party,” she said.
She argued that the party should have chosen a more neutral and experienced figure to lead the committee.
His son has lost, and you think he is the best person to lead a fact-finding committee that includes that very constituency? Why not choose an independent person? Couldn’t we find anyone else in the party to chair it?” she asked.
The former MP also rejected any attempt to blame the party’s defeat solely on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, suggesting that the process was being manipulated to discredit him.
We know what we know, and we have heard what we’ve heard. He shouldn’t come and tell us that we should blame everything on Bawumia because Ghanaians don’t want him and that we won’t market him again,” she stated.
She further pointed out that a separate election review report from the Ashanti Region did not blame Bawumia for the party’s loss, arguing that a more experienced individual like Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu should have been tasked with leading the investigation.
The Ashanti report does not blame Bawumia for the party’s defeat, and that is a credible report. Why couldn’t the same person have done this work for the party? Who has more parliamentary and electoral experience than Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu?” she questioned.
Adwoa Safo warned that if the committee’s findings were politically motivated, it would undermine the NPP’s chances of rebuilding and recapturing power.
If this report is manipulated, it means we are not serious about rebuilding, regrouping, or recapturing power,” she said.
