MASLOC pledges support for Adum fire victims

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Abigail Elorm Mensah, has assured traders in Adum, Kumasi, of the government’s commitment to helping them rebuild their businesses following the recent fire outbreak.

“It is very disheartening to come and see what has happened here. But all we want to say is that the government, MASLOC, and the Gender Ministry, together, are not going to allow them to go through this alone.

“The government will stand with them through it all. The government will make sure that we do everything possible to support them,” she assured.

Mensah also encouraged the affected traders to remain hopeful. “Once there is life, there is hope. Everything here is gone, but I believe that once they have their lives, we can support them to rebuild whatever they have lost. So MASLOC is standing with them in this period, and we are going to ensure that we support them as best as we can.”

Meanwhile, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has announced plans to create vehicular routes and curb unauthorized fire-related activities in areas surrounding Adum PZ, following the recent fire incident.

The initiative, set to begin on Monday, March 24, aims to improve accessibility and reduce fire risks caused by human activities. In a statement seen by Citi News, the Minister confirmed that security personnel would be deployed to ensure the smooth implementation of the plan.

‘Dr Asiamah’s appointment as BoG Governor signals a new era for bankers’ – Kwamina Asomaning

0

The appointment of Dr Johnson Asiamah as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) should serve as an inspiration for professionals in the banking and financial services sector to aspire to the highest office, Ghana Association of Banks president, Kwamina Asomaning, has said.

Speaking on PM Express Business Edition on Joy News on Thursday, the Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana, lauded the decision to appoint Dr Asiamah, describing it as a progressive move that highlights the importance of internal growth within institutions.

“Well, first of all, we would like to congratulate him again. We’ve congratulated him in person, but I think it’s totally proper that we congratulate him again and wish him a very successful tenure,” Asomaning said.

He stated that Dr. Asiamah’s elevation sends a strong message to the banking industry that hard work, competence, and dedication can lead to the highest leadership positions in the country’s financial space.

“He served as one of the deputy governors, and so it’s quite exciting to see that the central bank has gone for one of its own to rise through the ranks,” Mr Asomaning noted.

“We feel that the signalling to the financial services industry, the signalling to his colleagues at the Central Bank, is a positive one that encourages people to aspire for that high office.”

Beyond the symbolic importance of his appointment, Kwamina Asomaning stressed that banks are looking forward to forging a strong and productive relationship with the new Governor, particularly at a time when the country’s financial sector is navigating major challenges.

“We’re looking for a very close relationship with the Governor. The role that banks play in promoting economic growth cannot be underestimated.

“And considering some of the fiscal challenges that the sovereign is facing, the expectations that the private sector will carry a lot of the load, and banks provide financing to the private sector, principally,” he explained.

According to Kwamina Asomaning, ensuring that Ghana’s banking sector remains strong and resilient is key to driving economic recovery, and collaboration between the central bank and the commercial banking industry will be critical.

“Having vibrant banks, having banks that are set up to promote economic activity, is extremely important, and we do hope for a very strong relationship with the Governor to ensure that we can fulfil our mandate,” he concluded.

Dr. Johnson Asiamah’s appointment comes at a time when Ghana’s banking industry is working to recover from recent economic shocks, including the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and inflationary pressures.

Stakeholders are optimistic that his extensive experience within the Bank of Ghana will foster a regulatory environment that balances stability with growth.

Interior Minister calls for 24-Hour Police unit to support 24-Hour Economy

0

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has highlighted the urgent need for the Ghana Police Service to establish a dedicated 24-hour policing unit to support the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

According to the Minister, ensuring security and stability for industries, businesses, and organisations operating around the clock is crucial for the successful implementation of the policy.

Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, Mr. Muntaka Mubarak emphasized the indispensable role of law enforcement in making the initiative effective.

He stressed that businesses adopting the 24-hour economy model will require robust security measures to protect their operations, employees, and assets.

Without adequate security, he warned, the effectiveness of the initiative could be compromised.

“The aim of this Secretariat is to implement a robust and sustainable policing model that ensures security is guaranteed in both urban and rural areas. Activities do not cease, and neither can our vigilance.

“We are laying the groundwork for a system that is dynamic and responsive to the unique challenges posed by the 24-hour economy. As we embrace this new approach, the safety of businesses, citizens, and workers will be prioritised to ensure that every hour of the day is protected,” he stated.

The 24-hour economy initiative is a strategic policy aimed at maximizing economic productivity by encouraging businesses to operate beyond traditional working hours.

The policy is expected to boost employment, increase revenue generation, and improve service delivery across various sectors.

It particularly targets industries such as manufacturing, transportation, retail, healthcare, hospitality, and financial services, which can benefit from round-the-clock operations.

Bank of Ghana’s MPC begins crucial meeting to review Economic Outlook

0

The Bank of Ghana’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will commence its 123rd meeting today to assess economic conditions and implement measures to maintain financial stability.

This three-day meeting, the first under newly appointed Governor Dr. Johnson Asiamah, will conclude with a key policy announcement on Friday, March 28, 2024.

The MPC last held the policy rate at 27% in January 2025, citing persistent inflationary pressures. However, the Central Bank now faces a more complex decision, as inflation remains high, and debt concerns persist among other economic issues.

For over two years, inflation has hovered in the low twenties, recording 23.2% in 2023 and 23.8% in 2024, with the latest rate standing at 23.1% as of February 2025. Meanwhile, Treasury bill rates have been steadily declining, raising concerns about liquidity management and investor confidence in government securities.

With the government targeting an end-of-year inflation rate of 11.9% and a 4.4% overall real GDP growth target,  businesses, investors, and economic analysts are eager for signals on potential interest rate adjustments and other monetary policy interventions that could shape the economic landscape.

As the committee deliberates, the key question remains: Will the Bank of Ghana maintain its cautious stance in the face of underlying inflationary pressures and global economic uncertainties, or will it pivot towards policies that support economic growth amid ongoing financial pressures?

I’m also a big artiste, why did you snub me? – King Jerry disappointed over birthday bash exclusion

0

Ghanaian artist King Jerry has publicly expressed his disappointment over being snubbed from what many are calling the biggest event of 2025 — Richard Nii-Armah Quaye’s lavish birthday celebration in Accra.

The extravagant event, which has dominated headlines and social media discussions, saw a host of A-list celebrities from Ghana and Nigeria, including Diamond Platnumz, Ramsey Nouah, Ini Edo, and event host Joselyn Dumas in attendance.

Reports indicate that these stars received substantial payments simply for their attendance.

King Jerry did not hold back his frustration in a video making rounds online.

“Nii Armah Quaye, why?

“Why was I not invited?” he questioned, visibly displeased. He expressed shock over being left out, emphasising his personal connection with the Ghanaian billionaire.

“I have a whole collection of songs ready to entertain any audience. This was the perfect opportunity, yet I was overlooked,” he lamented.

While the reason for his exclusion remains unknown, his remarks have sparked a debate about the criteria used to select performers and attendees for the high-profile event.

‘Hard life’ brings success, ‘soft upbringing’ kills legacy – Agongo advises parents

0

Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Seidu Agongo has warned that excessive comfort in childhood can hinder success, arguing that hardship is the key ingredient in shaping responsible and resilient individuals.

Speaking in an interview with TV XYZ on Thursday, 13 March, Mr. Agongo criticised modern parenting, saying that many children today are being pampered to the point where they cannot think critically and solve problems.

“My problem with today’s upbringing is that we pamper our kids too much. Sometimes we make it look as if we are going to be there for the kids forever,” he said. “What brings success is the hardship that we go through. Only when you go through hardship can you think as a human, flourish, and become your true self.”

The businessman shared insights from his own life, highlighting how his early experiences helped shape his success.

Despite his father being financially stable, Mr. Agongo did not grow up in a privileged environment; rather, he grew up in Burma Camp with an uncle who was a military officer.

The challenges he faced during his upbringing, he said, instilled in him the resilience and problem-solving skills that led to his achievements today.

The Risks of Soft Upbringing

According to Mr. Agongo, modern parents who shower their children with luxury risk raising people who cannot sustain their family’s wealth and legacy.

He questioned the logic behind giving children expensive choices without them having worked for them.

“You are giving your kids options to choose which car to drive, which school to attend, what shoes to wear, on money that the kids didn’t make. And your money, no matter how rich you are, you can’t sustain it for up to two generations after you if you don’t train the kids well,” he warned.

He argued that comfort eliminates the need for critical thinking, creativity, and self-reliance. “Pampering doesn’t make the brain think. Just imagine that today everything you want in life, you get it – what do you have to think for? So you don’t think. It’s only when there is difficulty that creativity sets in.”

Discipline Over Luxury

Mr. Agongo stressed that discipline is essential for raising responsible children.

He lamented that many parents lack the strength to instil discipline, fearing that it might make them unpopular.

“Most parents are not strong. They easily give up. At the end of the day, I’m training my child to take over from me one day, and you can’t train a child by pampering them,” he asserted.

He further argued that children must be exposed to life’s challenges to develop problem-solving skills. “You should let them understand difficulties. Once there are difficulties, you think of alternative solutions.”

Decision-Making and Legacy Preservation

Beyond parenting, Mr. Agongo pointed to a broader issue in Ghanaian and African decision-making, where personal relationships and emotions take precedence over merit. He contrasted this with Nigeria, where he claimed business mogul Aliko Dangote’s success is not solely due to family connections but a result of strategic investments based on competence.

“A typical Ghanaian or African leader takes decisions based on attachment – this person is my son, this person is my daughter, this person is my cousin. We don’t make decisions based on the wisdom or knowledge of the person,” he said.

He cautioned that making decisions based on personal relationships rather than merit is a fundamental flaw that affects not only businesses but also governance and family wealth sustainability.

“Until we make decisions based on wisdom and knowledge – that I didn’t even know him from anywhere, but I think this person is worth my support – we’ll go nowhere.”

For Mr. Agongo, the message is clear: success is earned through hardship, and only by instilling resilience in the next generation can parents hope to preserve their legacies.

Government falls short of target by GH¢2.8bn

0

For the first time this year, the government has fallen short of its Treasury bill target, missing it by GH¢2.8 billion.

Data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) shows that the government aimed to raise GH¢6.14 billion from short-term instruments but received bids totaling GH¢3.32 billion, representing a 45% undersubscription.

Despite the shortfall, authorities rejected GH¢1.67 billion in bids.

A breakdown of the auction results reveals that out of GH¢3.6 billion tendered for the 91-day Treasury bill, GH¢2.33 billion was accepted. The 182-day bill attracted GH¢741 million in bids, with GH¢574 million accepted. For the 364-day bill, GH¢622 million was tendered, but only GH¢406 million was accepted.

Meanwhile, interest rates on Treasury bills remained stable, ranging between 15% and 18%. The 91-day bill dipped by 15 basis points to 15.73% from last week’s 15.88%. The 182-day bill was unchanged at 16.93%, while the 364-day bill saw an 87-basis point increase to 18.85% from 17.98%.

Market analysts believe the undersubscription was expected, given the gradual decline in bids over the past two weeks. This suggests the market is approaching a yield equilibrium as demand and supply stabilise.

In the next auction, the Treasury aims to raise GH¢5.64 billion.

2024/25 Ghana Premier League: Week 25 Match Report

Medeama SC secured a vital 2-0 victory over Aduana FC at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Sunday Medeama SC secured a vital 2-0 victory over Aduana FC at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Sunday

Medeama SC secured a vital 2-0 victory over Aduana FC at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Sunday afternoon, ending their two-game losing streak.

The result provides a much-needed boost for the former Ghana Premier League champions, who are looking to climb the table.

After a cagey first half, the breakthrough arrived in the 55th minute when Michael Sarpong was brought down inside the box. Defender Zakaria Mumuni Mubarik took responsibility from the spot and confidently slotted home to hand Medeama the lead.

Aduana FC struggled to create clear-cut chances despite pushing for an equalizer. Medeama’s defence stood firm, frustrating the visitors, who have found consistency hard to come by this season.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 75th minute through Sarpong, who capped off an impressive performance with a well-taken low header. The goal all but sealed the win, ensuring Medeama secured all three points in front of their home crowd.

With this victory, Medeama moved to seventh place on the league table, while Aduana FC dropped to 12th. Both teams now shift focus to their next games.

PwC urges govt to halt 3% hike in growth and sustainability levy

0

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has called on the government to reconsider its proposed 3% increase of the Growth and Sustainability Levy, warning that the move could place an excessive burden on the mining sector.

The government has defended the planned hike, stating that it aims to ensure a fairer share of revenue from the mining industry, particularly when global commodity prices are favorable.

However, Abeku Gyan-Quansah, a tax partner at PwC, argues that rather than increasing the levy, the government should focus on strengthening the enforcement of mining royalties.

“But let’s pause for a moment—I don’t support multiple tax rates. This is essentially a tax on production, and we already have a similar one in the form of royalties. Could we have simply adjusted the royalty rate instead?” he questioned.

He also expressed concerns over the long-term nature of such levies. “Historically, we’ve seen so-called ‘temporary’ taxes remain in place for decades. Since 2000, successive governments have introduced measures that were meant to be short-term, yet they continue indefinitely,” he noted.

The proposed levy increase is part of a broader strategy to boost government revenue and ensure the mining sector contributes more significantly to national development.

Presenting the 2025 Budget to Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson also proposed extending the levy’s sunset clause until 2028, aiming to provide a more stable and predictable framework for its implementation.

PwC’s concerns add to the ongoing debate over the sustainability and fairness of tax policies in Ghana’s extractive industry, as stakeholders weigh the potential impact on investment and economic growth.

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a British national, Naomi Mbelu, for attempting to smuggle cannabis through Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

Mbelu, who arrived in Accra on March 22, 2025, at approximately 12:20 p.m., was intercepted after disembarking from Ethiopian Airlines Flight 921. She had travelled from Bangkok, Thailand, with a layover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Upon screening, NACOC officials discovered 41 black polythene-sealed packages in her luggage, which later tested positive for cannabis.

The total weight of the seized substances was 21.38 kilograms.

Further investigations led to the arrest of two accomplices: Joseph Asoa, who had arranged a visa on arrival for Mbelu and was assisting her at the airport, and Isaac Anum Sowah, the driver who arrived to pick her up.

All three suspects are currently in NACOC custody, while the seized drugs remain under investigation.

Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to combating drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports of entry.

Only 48% of produced water gets to final consumer

0

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has raised concerns over the significant loss of water in its distribution system, revealing that only 48 percent of the water it produces successfully reaches consumers’ homes.

The remaining 52 percent is lost due to various challenges, including pipeline leakages, illegal connections, and inefficiencies in the distribution infrastructure.

At a forum held in Accra, the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, addressed these pressing issues, shedding light on the critical factors that hinder the effective delivery of water to households across the country.

According to Mr. Mutawakilu, the issue of non-revenue water—which refers to water that is produced but does not generate revenue due to system losses—has become a major challenge for the company.

He stated that as of the end of December 2024, Ghana Water Limited recorded an alarming 52 percent non-revenue water rate.

This means that more than half of the water treated and distributed fails to reach consumers, leading to wastage, financial losses, and inadequate supply for many communities.

“Furthermore, high level of water loss due to leakage in pipes, illegal connection and inefficient distribution systems continue to circumvent water loss before it even reaches consumers. As at the end of December 2024, non-revenue water was 52 percent. So that means the moment we produce water and dispatch only 48 percent gets to customers.”

‘Love of money is root of all evil and banks must fight that evil’ – Association of Banks president

0

The Ghana Association of Banks president, Kwamina Asomaning, has made a strong case for heightened ethical training in the banking sector, stressing the need for mandatory programs to combat fraud and unethical behavior among bank staff.

Speaking on PM Express Business Edition on Joy News, the Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana did not mince words about the reputational damage caused by financial misconduct within banks.

“What we sell as banks is trust,” he emphasized.

“And it’s embarrassing, and it’s a big shame when we breach the trust of our customers, our employers, and our shareholders by effectively putting our hand in the cookie jar.”

He pointed out that while the banking sector is built on financial integrity, the environment itself presents many temptations.

“You know there’s a biblical saying that the love of money is the root of all evil, and we’re right in the midst of money,” he said.

“So you can imagine that it brings out the very worst in people. And unfortunately, we’re finding that some of our colleagues are unable to control themselves when they see these vast sums.”

To address this challenge, Asomaning called for a more aggressive approach to ethics training, beyond the standard programs already in place.

“It’s important for us as an industry to double down on training and sensitisation on these topics of ethics and good moral character,” he noted.

He revealed that the Chartered Institute of Bankers, in collaboration with the National Banking College, is now offering an ethics module free of charge to banks to ensure that every staff member is equipped with the right moral compass.

“It should be made mandatory,” Asomaning insisted.

“I mean, all banks have ethics programs that they’ve rolled out to their staff. But ethics is an area where you cannot have too much of, because of the temptations you face daily, the pressures from customers, from other parties, from family members—it’s excessive. So being reminded of the need to constantly maintain that high moral line is extremely important.”

His remarks come amid rising concerns about banking fraud in Ghana, with several cases of insider-related financial misconduct surfacing in recent years.

Industry stakeholders have been calling for stricter compliance measures, and Asomaning believes ethics training should be at the core of that effort.

“This is not just about compliance. This is about protecting the reputation of the industry, protecting jobs, and most importantly, maintaining the trust of the public,” he concluded.

Okada riders to wear uniforms, use trackers – Amaliba

0

The government has affirmed its commitment to regularise okada business The government has affirmed its commitment to regularise okada business

The Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has outlined a series of stringent regulations that will be enforced should Parliament approve the legalization of commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as ‘Okada.’

In an interview on TV3, he emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring order and safety in the sector.

“They [Okada riders] are going to be given uniforms to identify them. We will give them reflectors, and then we will prescribe the type of helmet that they will be wearing. Then the people they pick will also wear the same helmet,” Amaliba stated, stressing the need for proper identification and safety gear for both riders and passengers.

To further regulate the operations, he disclosed that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will introduce special number plates and licensing for commercial motorcycles. “The DVLA will give them special number plates and licensing. Then the police will enforce the law,” he added.

According to Amaliba, Okada riders will not be allowed to operate individually but will instead be required to join unions.

This measure, he explained, would enhance accountability and facilitate the identification of riders involved in illegal activities.

“We are going to reset them in unions. We are not going to have individual Okada riders walking to the offices to say, ‘I have a motorbike, I want to register,’ no.

“You must be with a union, and that union must have its executives so that when you engage in an illegality or a crime, and we are looking for you, we will go to the union, and we can fish you out. Things are going to change,” he asserted.

In addition to these structural changes, Amaliba revealed that Okada motorcycles will be equipped with speed control gadgets and tracking systems to curb reckless riding and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

“We are also going to provide them with speed limits. There will be gadgets in their motors which will stop them from speeding.

“Then also, there will be a tracker in each motorbike. So as you move, wherever your motorbike is going, there is a computer monitoring you and your movement,” he said.

These measures, Amaliba indicated, are crucial in ensuring that if Okada operations are legalized, they do not contribute to lawlessness and road accidents.

Ghana must be 100% ready – Otto Addo on facing Madagascar

0

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has described Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Madagascar as a “small final,” insisting the team must give 100% to secure victory.

With Ghana hoping to build on their recent win over Chad, Addo is leaving nothing to chance.

“We don’t need 98 per cent, we don’t need 99 per cent, we need 100 per cent,” he said per Ghana FA.

“This is like a small final, and if we win this game, then we are really going to qualify, but it’s going to be very, very tough.”

The match will be played in Morocco, and while many expect Ghana to benefit from the neutral venue, Addo is wary of psychological traps.

“It should be, actually, yes there is an advantage, because it’s always not that easy if you play away and there are a lot of spectators but sometimes it’s also a trap.

“Psychologically, sometimes if you think it’s not going to be a hot atmosphere, it’s kind of a trap and you give maybe 1 or 2 per cent less.

“For me, I can say it not often again, we have to be really on our toes, no matter how the circumstances are, and we have to be there.

“We can’t just go out and think we will win; we have to work hard for this. Every centimetre is important, every duel is important and we have to go in every duel 100 per cent if we want to win this match.”

Madagascar, who impressed in their last outing, will pose a serious threat, and Addo knows his side must not take anything for granted.

“We observed the Madagascar team and they have done really, really well especially in the last game, so they are in good form and it’s going to be a tough game.”

Despite acknowledging “some small issues here and there” with injuries, the coach assured that “in all, we are all good to go.”

Addo called on Ghanaians to continue their support, adding: “Thank you, Accra, for this unbelievable atmosphere. Thank you to the President of the country, the sports minister, GFA president, everybody who worked so hard… Keep on supporting, keep on helping us, and we can do this, but together.”

I told them to go to hell – Prof. Gyampo on BBC exposé

0

CEO. Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Ransford Gyampo CEO. Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Ransford Gyampo

Professor Ransford Gyampo has revealed that the BBC reached out to him for an interview before airing their controversial report about him, but he rejected their request after realizing they had an agenda.

He recounted his interaction with the international media house, insisting that he had done nothing wrong.

“When the matter broke, and they were about to air it, they contacted me. I showed them evidence that I was ignorant; I didn’t know anything about what they claimed I had done. But the more I explained, the more it became clear they just wanted to go ahead with their story,” he recounted on 3FM, monitored by MyNewsGH.

Seeing no point in further engagement, Gyampo said he made his stance clear. “I realized they had an agenda, so I blasted them and told them to go to hell and do it!”

The academic further detailed how the entire controversy was a setup that took months to execute.

“It was not something that happened in a day—it was a plot that took place over three months.

“I survived all those months until I let my guard down, extending magnanimity to someone who twisted things. Whatever you heard or watched was voice-over narration—somebody was talking about something I had no knowledge of.”

He insisted that key parts of the conversation were deliberately omitted to misrepresent him.

“The things I was supposed to have said were all quoted out of context. It was not a monologue; it was a conversation. Why bring only one side and exclude the other person’s words?”

Gyampo also addressed how his wife handled the situation, emphasizing that there was never any tension at home.

“It was not challenging because she knew everything. I show everything to her. We never quarrelled about it,” he said.

Individual brilliance and team spirit key to beating Madagascar – Otto Addo

0

Black Stars coach Otto Addo believes a blend of individual brilliance and collective effort will be vital when Ghana face Madagascar in the World Cup qualifiers on Monday.

Though confident in his squad’s talent, Addo emphasised that teamwork and adaptability would be the deciding factors.

“We have to continue to work for each other, even if somebody makes a mistake, the other one has to be there to help him out,” he explained as quoted by Ghana FA.

“This is what will be decisive at the end.”

He praised his players for aligning with tactical instructions in their win over Chad but expects a different kind of challenge from Madagascar.

“Surely we prepare them offensively, but also defensively… Madagascar is now a new task, it’s going to be different. For us, it’s always important that the players read the game, read the signals and read our game plan.”

He added that leadership on the pitch will be crucial. “Surely the leaders take a big role in that, if somebody is not in his position they demand and correct the position.”

Addo’s strategy relies on both tactical discipline and the ability to react as a unit. “How do we push each other, how do we demand concentration from each other, how do we focus on our tasks? This is what will be decisive.”

Although statistics may favour Ghana, Addo remains cautious. “Football is not like simple mathematics. You can be better; you can have more chances, but still not win.”

Otto concluded with a passionate appeal to fans: “We surely want to give everything for tomorrow’s game, so that we can give back in points… We are looking forward to our next home match as well.”

Situated in the Sunyani Central Business District (CBD), the facility is furnished with modern computers and accessories and laptops connected to the internet.

Speaking at a short inauguration ceremony in Sunyani, Mr. Raphael Ahenu, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Foundation, said the facility was set up purposely to enable adolescents to access the internet free for learning and research purposes.

It is in line with the “Intermediary City Eco-System Platform” that brings together government agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, and most importantly, young people themselves to co-create solutions that will make Sunyani a city where every adolescent has the opportunity to thrive.

“We have also engaged instructors who will guide and ensure that the users or beneficiaries will use the facility productively. They will also be introduced to the use of some common apps and have the opportunity to learn the use of the computer in general”, he stated.

Mr. Ahenu explained that the Platform was under the GloMeF’s Resilient City for Adolescents Project (RC4A) and remained a crucial step in ensuring that young people were not just seen and heard but were actively involved in shaping the policies and programmes that affected their lives.

“At GloMeF we strongly believe that young people are not just beneficiaries of development, instead key drivers of change and if we provide them with the right opportunities, skills, and platforms, they will not only build a better future for themselves but for all of us”, he stated.

Mr. Ahenu expressed the optimism that “empowering young people is not just a responsibility but an investment in the sustainable future of our city”, and asked stakeholders to come together, innovate, and take actions that would transform Sunyani into a resilient city ‘where every adolescent feel seen, heard, and supported”.

In a highlight, Mr. Ahenu explained that the RC4A was a three-year project being implemented by the foundation and in partnership with Indigenous Women Empowerment Network and Citizens Watch Ghana, both NGOs.

The Swiss Bortnar Foundation is funding the 300,000-pounds sterling project which seeks to improve adolescent lives.

France set up Spain meeting after shooutout drama

0

France produced a superb recovery to fight back from a two-goal first-leg deficit to eliminate Croatia on penalties and move into the semi-finals of the Nations League.

Croatia had won 2-0 at home on Thursday, but, at a packed and passionate Stade de France, Didier Deschamps’ side dominated the second leg and scored twice to take the tie to extra time before booking a meeting with Spain in the final four following a dramatic shootout.

France goalkeeper Mike Maignan saved Martin Baturina’s first penalty and Franjo Ivanovic shot over as the hosts had the advantage only for Jules Kounde and Theo Hernandez to both miss as it went to sudden death.

But Maignan again saved, this time from Josip Stanisic, and France defender Dayot Upamecano held his nerve to score the decisive spot-kick for a 5-4 success.

It was a deserved victory for the hosts, looking to win the competition for a second time after success in 2021.

Before the match, former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud was involved in a celebration of his career on the pitch. He is France’s all-time top goalscorer with 57 goals in 137 international appearances

After a goalless first half, the hosts finally made the breakthrough in the 52nd minute when Bayern Munich’s former Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise whipped a 25-yard free-kick over the Croatia wall with goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic nowhere near it.

Despite sustained pressure from the French, Croatia, beaten in the 2023 final by Spain, were 10 minutes away from progressing before the hosts got a deserved second goal when the in-form Ousmane Dembele swept home Olise’s cutback.

That took the tie to extra-time, with France continuing to dominate as Kylian Mbappe had three chances to win it, but was repeatedly denied by the impressive Livakovic.

But it was the other goalkeeper, Maignan, who proved to be the hero in the shootout as France scraped through to set up a semi-final against European champions Spain in June.

By winning the quarter-final, France will also go into World Cup Qualifying Group D along with Azerbaijan, Iceland and Ukraine, while Croatia will be in Group L with the Czech Republic, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar and Montenegro.

Tunisian president sacks prime minister amid economic and migration crisis

0

Tunisian President Kais Saied sacked Prime Minister Kamel Maddouri less than a year after his appointment amid a faltering economy and a growing number of migrants arriving from countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Maddouri was replaced by Sara Zaafarani, who is an engineer and has been minister of equipment and housing since 2021. She is Tunisia’s third prime minister in less than two years.

In recent months, Saied has sharply criticised the performance of ministers, saying many have not met the required standards and that the expectations of the Tunisian people are high. Last month, he sacked Finance Minister Sihem Boughdiri.

In a meeting broadcast on the presidency’s Facebook page, Saied called on Zaafarani “to further coordinate government action and overcome obstacles to meet the expectations of the Tunisian people”.

Tunisians have complained about deteriorating public services from health to transport and utilities.

“Criminal gangs are active in many public facilities. It is time to put an end to them and hold every official accountable, regardless of their position and the nature of their negligence or complicity.”, Saied said in a speech at a National Security Council meeting on Friday.

Economic growth has not exceeded 1.4% in the past year, and the North African country’s public finances face a severe crisis that has led to shortages of key commodities including sugar, rice and coffee.

“We will continue the liberation battle until justice prevails for all citizens … We will continue to thwart all conspiracies”, Saied said.

Tunisia is also facing widespread criticism over an unprecedented migrant crisis, as thousands of people from sub-Saharan Africa head to the country in an attempt to reach Europe.

Thousands of migrants are living in tents in forests in southern towns such as Amra and Jbeniana after authorities prevented them from travelling across the Mediterranean.

While the migrants frequently clash with local residents who want them deported from their area, local human rights groups accuse the authorities of racist rhetoric and incitement against migrants.

Saied seized extra powers in 2021 when he shut down the elected parliament and moved to rule by decree before assuming authority over the judiciary.

The opposition described the move as a coup.

Women Farmers Association provides entrepreneurship training for 139 women at Dwenase

0

The Dwenase Women Farmers Association has organised entrepreneurship training programme for 139 women at Dwenase and its surrounding communities in the Ahafo Region.

The training programme, which was in two phases, was funded by the Global Greengrant Fund (GGF) under the Association’s “Teach one, Teach One” Entrepreneurial Project.

Beneficiaries were drawn from Dwenase, Apesika, Kwaff, Kwa-bena, Master Nkwanta and Dwenase Number Two, with the goal to empower them with valuable skills for their personal growth and community development.

Phase one of the training saw 86 women undergoing training in production of parasol (bleach), liquid soap, after-wash, washing powder and brown sugar.

However, under the phase two, 53 women received free training in beads-making, to equip them with alternative livelihood sources beyond their farming business.

Madam Lucy Annor, the Resource Person for the training, took the participants through the practical ways of making beads from local raw materials readily available in their communities and encouraged them to take the training serious to enhance their livelihoods.

She said the skills acquired from the training, when put to good use would earn them extra income and boost their income levels as climate change continued to negatively affect farming activities in the area.

She also educated the participants on the negative effects of the continuous use of fertilizers and suggested the application of organic weedicides and use of other effective pest control methods.

Madam Annor who doubles as the Coordinator of Tano Women Empowerment and Development Association, educated the participants on the effects and causes of climate change and introduced them to some mitigation and climate resilience adaptation strategies.

She encouraged them to join the crusade to protect and safeguard the environment for posterity.

Ms Esther Larbi, the Lead Person of the Dwenase Women Farmers Association, underscored the importance of the training and entreated the participants to attach seriousness to the training to increase their incomes.

She said with determination, proper planning, and a focused mindset, beneficiaries could improve their income levels by putting the skills and knowledge acquired to proper use.

She thanked the Global Greengrant Fund for supporting the women to acquire various income-generating skills.

2026 FIFA WCQ: Playing at neutral venue against Madagascar gives Ghana an advantage- Otto Addo

0

Otto Addo, head coach of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team-the Black Stars- believes that playing against Madagascar at a neutral location gives Ghana an advantage.

He said this ahead of Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Madagascar on Monday, March 24 at 19:00 GMT at the Mimoun Al Arsi Stadium that seats 12,000 spectators.

The crucial game is set to take place in Morocco and not in Madagascar as originally scheduled due to the unapproved status of Madagascar’s home venue.

While acknowledging the advantage that comes with playing at a neutral site, Otto Addo was quick to point out that such circumstances set up “psychological traps” Ghana should look to avoid.

“Should be [an advantage for us]. Actually yes [it’s an advantage for us] because it’s always not that easy if you play away [from home] and there a lot of spectators but sometimes it’s also a trap, psychologically. Sometimes if you think [that] it’s not going to be a hot atmosphere, it’s kind of a trap and you give maybe one or two percent less and for me…we have to be on our toes.”

A new 40-minute documentary from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints highlights the experiences of 24 young adults who recently participated in the Amos C. Brown Fellowship to Ghana.

The fellowship is named after the Rev. Dr. Amos C. Brown, who accompanied the group to Ghana. He is the pastor of San Francisco’s Third Baptist Church and member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and a good friend of Church President Russell M. Nelson.

Latter-day prophets and apostles repeatedly condemn racism and call for repentance about it, said Elder Ahmad S. Corbitt, a General Authority Seventy who participated in the fellowship to Ghana.

Celebrating a Legacy of Vision

0

On this World Optometry Day, we celebrate the remarkable journey of optometry in Ghana, a profession that has grown from humble beginnings into a thriving field. At the heart of this transformation is Dr. Francis Kojovi Morny (1919–2006), a man whose vision extended far beyond his time.

Born in Hohoe in the Volta Region and educated at Mfantsipim in the Central Region, Dr. F. K. Morny travelled to the United Kingdom, where he trained as an optician, the term for optometrists in those days, at the then University of Wales, Cardiff. Upon returning to the Gold Coast in the 50s, he built a successful private practice in Kumasi.

However, he foresaw a future crisis: without local training programs, Ghana’s optometry profession would eventually disappear as his generation passed.

At the time, optometry training was only available abroad—in the UK, the US, and a few other countries. Determined to change this, he began the Premier College of Optometry in the late 1980s with just four students and trained them in his private office.

His persistence led to a breakthrough when he convinced Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to establish a Postgraduate Diploma in Optometry, also beginning with five students. This later evolved into a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Optometry.

Still, he was not satisfied. He dreamed of a full-fledged optometry training system that could offer the highest qualifications. At 78 years old, rather than retiring, he enrolled at Abia State University in Nigeria for a two-year Doctor of Optometry (OD) top-up program.

Upon his return, he championed the establishment of an OD program at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), which, true to pattern, also started with five students.

His impact did not go unnoticed. In 2004, the World Council of Optometry (WCO) recognized him as the Father of Optometry in Africa.

On 10th March 2025, twenty three years after the UCC OD program began, and on what would have been his 106th birthday, history came full circle. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) approved the elevation of the UCC Department of Optometry and Vision Science into the School of Optometry and Vision Science, the first of its kind in West Africa.

From fewer than 20 optometrists in Ghana in the 1980s, the profession has expanded to over 600 optometrists serving in public and private practice, the military, academia, and research, both locally and internationally.

Research output has surged from zero in the 1980s to nearly 500 academic papers and over 5,000 citations currently. UCC Optometry is now mentoring other universities across Africa.

Dr. F. K. Morny saw beyond the present and worked tirelessly to build a transgenerational legacy. His story is a testament to the power of vision, determination, and the unwavering support of those who believed in his dream.

In this regard the diverse support from others like Mr Saint Gyimah Kesse, Dr. G. W. Brobbey, Prof. Keshaw Singh, Prof. Francis Boakye, all of KNUST; Rev. Prof. Addow-Obeng, Prof. Kobina Yankson, Prof. V. P. Y. Gadzekpo of UCC; as well as Prof. Ronald Eyime from Nigeria, Prof B. Mencias from the Philippines, and Prof. Shenni of the WCO were instrumental in turning this vision into reality. Their collective efforts gave life to the dream and shaped the profession as we know it now.

As we celebrate World Optometry Day, we honour not just the profession, but all optometrists trained in Ghana. Through their work in patient care, education, and research, they are the living proof that Dr F. K. Morny’s vision did not end with him, it continues in every eye they help see better. Ghanaian optometry stands tall today because a man, born and raised in Ghana, dared to dream, and then worked with others to make that dream a reality.

In this Ghana Month of March, his story is also a powerful reminder that Ghana has the talent and vision to solve its own challenges. God, bless our homeland Ghana.

Morocco is safe – Foreign Affairs Minister assures Ghanaians ahead of Madagascar game

0

Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil and Okudzeto Ablakwa Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil and Okudzeto Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured the people of Ghana that Morocco is safe.

According to him, there is no cause for alarm for Ghanaians.

In a post on social media, he said Ghanaians living in Morrocco can be assured that they have no cause for worry.

Ablakwa’s assurance comes as Ghana plays Madagascar on Monday in the 2026 World Cup qualifier in the North African country.

His post read, “ I have held fruitful and assuring discussions with the Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil.

She has assured that Ghanaians and all Africans living in Morocco are safe, contrary to the widely circulated videos on social media falsely claiming that some 700 Africans are being massacred.

Apparently, the footage in issue is an old 24th June 2022 border incident which led to the tragic, unfortunate and condemnable loss of 23 lives. Moroccan and Spanish authorities have since investigated that regrettable incident. It is worth noting that no Ghanaian casualty was recorded.

Her assurances come at a time when the Kingdom of Morocco has decided to double scholarships for Ghanaian students from 90 to 180 beginning this year.

Morocco and Ghana have also agreed to initiate a visa waiver agreement for all categories of travellers from both countries. The agreement will be presented to our Parliaments for ratification shortly.

We have both additionally pledged to deepen collaboration in Agribusiness, Tourism and Security”.

Fire Service PRO apologizes to Ashanti Regional Minister over ‘uncalled for’ comments

Dr Frank Amoakohene (L) and Alex King Nartey (R) Dr Frank Amoakohene (L) and Alex King Nartey (R)

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Alex King Nartey, has issued an apology to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, over comments he made regarding the March 21, 2025 fire that razed down shops at Adum in Kumasi.

The PRO said even though he stands by his stance that the minister could have used a better approach in conveying his displeasure with the service, he apologizes for the comments he made.

On March 22, 2025, the PRO wrote on his Facebook page: “I have great respect and admiration for the Honourable minister especially blazing the trail as the youngest minister.”

“My Intentions might have been taken out of context since I was acting on the belief that, the honourable minister could have used a different approach in dealing with the firefighters who had risked their lives for hours at the fire ground.”

He added that “the approach of publicly criticising them and videoing it was not the best, hence my comment that the shouting was uncalled for”.

This development follows an ongoing feud between the Ashanti Regional Minister and the GNFS, triggered by a devastating fire outbreak at the Central Market in Adum, Kumasi which destroyed several shops and caused significant property damage.

Alex King Nartey called out Dr. Frank Amoakohene over what he describes as an attempt to engage in self-aggrandizement at the expense of hardworking firefighters.

In a viral video from the scene of the Adum Market fire, Dr. Amoakohene was captured calling out firefighters for failing to show enthusiasm in fighting the blaze.

King Nartey questioned the motive behind the minister’s actions while noting the impact on the morale of the officers.

“He could have easily just approached any of our officers or the commander at the scene without having to necessarily put a camera on himself to create a spectacle. To what end?” the PRO asked.

King Nartey was quick to add that firefighters deserve to be well-equipped for the job.

Road Safety Authority calls for road safety education in schools

0

Abraham Amaliba, Director General of Ghana’s National Road Safety Authority Abraham Amaliba, Director General of Ghana’s National Road Safety Authority

The Director General of Ghana’s National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has called for road safety education to be introduced as a standalone subject in schools.

Speaking on TV3, on March, 23, 2025, Amaliba said he intends to engage the Ghana Education Service (GES) to integrate road safety into the curriculum, emphasising the need to instill safe driving practices in young people.

‘’They say, catch them young, so the best is to have the young ones educated early so as not to behave like the older ones on the road,” he said.

Amaliba described Ghana’s roads as “death traps” and expressed his determination to leave a lasting impact before his tenure ends.

Addressing Poor Road Conditions

He also raised concerns about poor visibility in the capital, stating that Accra remains dangerously dark at night. He plans to write to the Greater Accra Regional Minister to push for better street lighting across districts.

As a lawyer, Amaliba vowed to use legal means to improve road safety, tackling issues such as articulated trucks parked along highways and hawkers congesting pedestrian walkways.

Tougher Enforcement Measures

He stressed that stricter enforcement was needed to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.

“Compliance among road users will only happen if you crack the whip, so you can be rest assured that people will be issued with compliance notices,’’ he said.

Funding Challenges

Despite his ambitions, Amaliba acknowledged that inadequate funding remains a significant challenge. He revealed that the NRSA has no Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and that he inherited an office with depleted resources, making it difficult to implement road safety initiatives effectively.

Stylish White Cord Lace Styles for Fashionable Women

0

White cord lace fabric has long been celebrated for its delicate, intricate patterns and luxurious texture, making it a go-to choice for fashionable women who want to make a statement. This fabric, with its rich heritage and versatility, lends itself to an array of stylish and elegant designs that can be tailored for both formal and casual events. Whether attending a wedding, a gala, or a social gathering, cord lace gowns offer a perfect blend of sophistication, timeless beauty, and modern flair.

One of the most sought-after styles for fashionable women is the mermaid white cord lace gown. This design hugs the body from the bust to the knee and then flares out dramatically, creating a stunning hourglass shape. The intricate cord lace detailing along the bodice and skirt adds texture and depth to the look, making it ideal for upscale events such as evening galas or weddings. Paired with bold accessories and heels, this style exudes confidence and elegance.

For those who prefer a more classic and understated style, the A-line cord lace gown is a fantastic option. This dress features a fitted bodice that gently flares into a flowing skirt, offering both comfort and style. The addition of lace detailing at the neckline, sleeves, or hemline gives the gown a touch of elegance without being overly extravagant, making it perfect for both formal and semi-formal events.

Another stylish option is the off-shoulder white cord lace gown, which adds a contemporary twist to the traditional cord lace design. Exposing the shoulders and collarbones gives the gown a fresh and modern feel, while the lace fabric adds a touch of sophistication. This design works well for cocktail parties, evening events, and even more casual gatherings, depending on how it is accessorized.

Kennedy Agyapong & Anas Appears In Court Again

0

The long-standing legal battle between Kennedy Agyapong and investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas took another dramatic turn as the two appeared in court today, 23rd March 2025. The $18 million defamation case, which has captured national attention, has seen several heated moments, and today was no exception.

Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, arrived at the courtroom dressed in an elegant suit. His demeanor, however, suggested anything but calm. As he stepped into the courtroom, his gaze quickly locked onto Anas, who was dressed in his usual attire with his trademark spectacles. Those present in the courtroom could not miss the intense look on Kennedy Agyapong’s face – a mixture of anger and frustration. His eyes bore deep into Anas as if searching for answers to questions only he knew.

The case stems from comments Kennedy Agyapong made about Anas, which the journalist claims were defamatory and damaging to his reputation. In a previous court sitting, Agyapong pleaded for a reduction in the $18 million damage claim against him. However, today’s hearing did not seem to bring him any relief. Observers noted his evident displeasure, as he clenched his jaw and maintained a sharp gaze at his courtroom rival.

“He looked like he could explode at any moment,” an anonymous courtroom observer noted. “You could see it in his face—Kennedy Agyapong was boiling inside.”

Anas, on the other hand, remained composed and unmoved, his expression hidden behind his signature look. The investigative journalist has consistently maintained that his reputation has been unfairly tarnished by Agyapong’s remarks and is standing firm on his demand for justice.

As the proceedings continued, Kennedy Agyapong was seen shaking his head multiple times, seemingly in disbelief. The tension between the two men was undeniable, with some court attendees whispering among themselves about the strong emotions in the air.

The judge has yet to make a final ruling on the matter, but one thing is clear—the legal fight between these two fierce opponents is far from over. Whether Kennedy Agyapong will have his plea for a reduction granted or whether Anas will get his full claim remains to be seen. For now, all eyes remain on the courtroom as Ghanaians anticipate the next chapter in this high-profile defamation case.

Kejetia market management ignored our concerns – Federation of Kumasi Traders

0

Nana Akwasi Prempeh, President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, has expressed dissatisfaction with the previous management board of the Kumasi City Market (Kejetia) under the Akufo-Addo administration, stating that their appeals to address trader-related issues were disregarded.

He highlighted that despite numerous attempts to engage the former board concerning their challenges were consistently overlooked.

This development follows a directive from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), which requested the existing management of the Kumasi City Market to step aside. The RCC’s decision aims to facilitate investigations into various allegations and to ensure effective oversight during this period.

The directive follows multiple petitions from traders and other stakeholders regarding concerns over sanitation, utility bills, and general services at the market. This comes after the Central Business District of Adum was destroyed by a devastating fire on Friday, March 21.

According to a statement released on Sunday, March 23, after a series of meetings involving the RCC, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), and the Regional Minister, decided to form an IMC deemed necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing the grievances raised.

Speaking with Channel One Newsroom’s Charles Owusu Kumi, Nana Prempeh commended the ARCC for taking decisive actions to address issues affecting traders, reflecting a commitment to collaborative problem-solving.

Nana Akwasi Prempeh expressed satisfaction with the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council’s prompt response to their concerns.

Nana Prempeh stated, “Over the past few months, the leadership of the various traders associations, engaged the previous board chairman, who happened to be with the previous administration. We petitioned the then-board chairman about the inefficiency of the then-management team who were manning the activities of the Kumasi City Market.

“But we didn’t get a response that was pleasing to the traders. At the onset of a new administration, we decided to petition again and this time around, we sent our petition to the regional minister [Dr Frank Amoakohene] of which he had acted on it.”

‘I am not a card-bearing member of any party’

Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Alex King Nartey, has said he does not belong to any political party as suggested by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.

According to him, his comments against President John Mahama in previous years were an act of statesmanship, not partisanship.

This development follows an ongoing feud between the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene and the GNFS, triggered by a devastating fire outbreak at the Central Market in Adum, Kumasi which destroyed several shops and caused significant property damage.

Alex King Nartey called out over what he describes as an attempt to engage in self-aggrandizement at the expense of hardworking firefighters.

In a Facebook post on March 22, 2025, Dr Amoakohene shared an old post dated April 1, 2015, which featured the name and image of the GNFS PRO, believed to have been made by him.

The post included a series of wishes by Alex King Nartey on April 1, 2015, a day celebrated as April Fools’ Day, where people often engage in pranks and hoaxes.

Among the wishes were a vote of no confidence in President John Dramani Mahama and the ECG to announce an end to power outages locally known as dumsor.

However, upon sighting the post, Dr. Amoakohene harshly criticised Alex King Nartey, accusing him of being a politician rather than a serviceman, referencing the post that was purportedly made by him.

“Bro talked about social media without knowing the power of it. He’s a politician, not a serviceman,” he posted.

This triggered an apology from the PRO whiles noting that: “I might have made comments in the past against His Excellency, but that was BEFORE I joined the service and that was also In my capacity as a worried youth who among many criticized his shortfalls.”

In recent times, I have spoken and made posts to Commending highly moves by His Excellency the President. On record, I am NOT a Member or a Card Bearing member of any party and anyone with contrary evidence can come forward to prove me wrong. I am sorry if my utterances offended the Honourable Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene but I Still stand by my Conviction that, a much better approach could have been adopted,” he wrote in a Facebook post on March 23, 2025.

He was however quick to add that “Firemen deserve better and I am hopeful that, Your Administration will be remembered for Leading the Drive to Equip and Retool the Ghana National Fire Service.”

Life under the Circle overpass

0

Beneath the towering Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, a silent struggle unfolds daily. Dozens of homeless individuals seek refuge on the cold pavement, battling hunger, harsh weather, and an uncertain future.

For them, survival is a daily fight, and hope remains a distant dream.

At the break of dawn, 5 a.m., Felicia is still asleep. The hard concrete beneath her offers no comfort, and the surroundings are far from ideal. More concerning is that she is eight months pregnant, with no proper shelter, no source of steady income, and no support system. Once a bright home economics student with aspirations, Felicia’s life took an unfortunate turn, leading her to the streets.

“I do not even recognize myself anymore. When I see my reflection in the mirror after taking a bath, I ask myself, ‘Is this me?’ But I keep telling myself it is not too late. I will survive this. I will make it in life,” she said, clinging to faith amid despair.

Felicia’s story is not unique. The area beneath the interchange has become home to many who have nowhere else to go. Their presence, however, has become a concern for passersby, some of whom view them as a nuisance.

Yet, some residents express sympathy for the homeless community, acknowledging the hardships they face.

“I feel sad when I see them in such situations,” said Isaac Nyamebehyere, a mate working in the area. “Some of them turn to stealing because they have no means of survival. But not all of them are bad. Some come to us begging for money for food, and we help them because you never know what could happen to you tomorrow.”

Kamel Abubakar, another resident, echoed similar sentiments. “It’s heartbreaking to see them lying here. If you have nowhere to sleep in Accra, you end up under bridges or on the roadside, which can be dangerous. I wish I could help, but I am struggling myself.”

As Felicia’s due date approaches, her worries deepen. She already has a two-year-old son, Benedict, who clings to her side. She fears she will be unable to care for another child and is considering giving her unborn baby away to increase the chances of survival for the rest of her family.

“By next month, I will give birth, and the rains will start falling. Where will I keep my newborn? I think about this every night. Where will I get hot water to bathe the baby? Where will I even deliver? I might go to Korle-Bu and hope someone there will listen to my story and take the baby so I can focus on raising my son,” she confessed, her voice heavy with sorrow.

Her plight is mirrored by many others in the area. Around the Neoplan Station and in front of the Ghana National Fire Service office at Circle, similar scenes unfold people sleeping on bare concrete, others curled up on stone pathways, hoping to make it through another night.
For Soglo Doris, a woman who left Jasikan in search of better opportunities, life in Accra has been nothing short of a nightmare. She once had a job selling water but had to stop due to low earnings. Now, she roams the streets in search of work while caring for her son, whose father abandoned them.

“I came here to find a job. I found one in the market, but we were later evicted. Now, I am still searching for work, but nothing has come my way. I am relying on God,” she said, holding her son on her lap.

Despite the despair, some still hold on to hope. Felicia, though battered by life’s hardships, hopes to reunite with her family one day.

“Wherever my family members are, I plead with them to come to my aid. I know I didn’t listen to my parents’ advice, and I regret my choices. But I ask for their forgiveness. I just want a second chance,” she said, tears streaming down her face.

For now, life under the overpass continues. As Accra’s skyline evolves, the lives of those beneath its roads remain unchanged—defined by uncertainty, survival, and a longing for a better tomorrow.

Five before High Court for stealing fuel, burning fuel tanker

0

Five persons have been put before an Accra High Court for allegedly stealing fuel worth GH¢834,300 belonging to A-Bek Company Limited.

The four of the accused persons, Bashiru Mohammed, Isaac Donkor, all drivers, Abdellah Dauda a driver’s mate, and Yaw Gerald a transporter and businessman, were present in court.

The Court presided over by Justice Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Alhaji Iddrisu, the first accused person, who is also a driver for failing to attend court.

Despite the presence of counsel for Iddrisu, the court went ahead to issue the bench warrant.

Two of their accomplices whose names were given as one Alhaji and Kofi Adu, are said to be at large.

The accused persons, except Yaw Gerald, are alleged to have met in Kasse, near Ahodwo in the Ashanti region and conspired to sell diesel to Gerald instead of delivering it to BOST Depot at Buipe.

They also planned to stage an accident which involved driving the tanker off the road and burning it to cover up.

Iddrisu, Mohammed aka Gambo, Donkor, Alhaji and Kofi Adu have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime namely stealing 54,000 litres of diesel valued at GH¢834,300.

Iddrisu and Dauda have been charged with stealing the fuel.

Iddrisu, Mohammed, Donkor, Alhaji and Kofi Adu are facing another charge of conspiracy to cause damage to a DAF Tanker Trailer with registration number GN 9587-13, valued at GH¢730,000.

Mohammed is facing another charge of causing damage to the Tanker Trailer by setting it ablaze.

The accused persons except Alhaji Iddrisu, One Alhaji and Kofi Adu have pleaded not guilty.

The Court has admitted the four of the accused persons present in court to bail in the sum of GHC300,000 with two sureties each.

The Court ordered that the sureties justify equivalent to the bail sum with moveable or immovable property.

Additionally, the sureties are to deposit their valid Identity Cards at the registry of the Court.

The accused persons on bail were also to report to the Police on Tuesdays of every month.

The Prosecution’s case is that the complainant Nana Ampong Asare works with A-Bek Company Limited, a fuel transporting company.

About two years ago, the prosecution said the complainant handed over one of the company’s DAF Trailer Tankers with registration number GN-9587-13 to Iddrisu, Mohammed and Donkor, who are drivers residing at Ofinso, Abuakwa and Tech, respectively to work with.

The prosecution said the tanker loads fuel at Tema BOST and Iddrisu convey the same to various BOST depots within the country.

Sometime in 2024, Iddrisu and Dauda were scheduled to load 54,000 litres of diesel valued at GHC834,3000 from Tema BOST to Buipe BOST substation in the Savanah Region.

The prosecution said prior to that the accused persons except Dauda and Gerald met at Kasse, near Ahodwo in the Ashanti Region and conspired to sell the fuel to Gerald instead of delivering it to the BOST depot at Buipe.

“They planned to stage an accident which involved driving the tanker off the road and burning it, to cover up their tracks.”

In furtherance of that Iddrisu and Mohammed in December 2024, met with Gerald and informed him that in two weeks Iddrisu would load diesel from Tema BOST to Buipe but they wanted to sell the fuel to him (Gerald).

According to the prosecution, Gerald agreed to buy the fuel at GH¢13 instead of GH¢15.27 per litre.

Hence on December 30, 2024, they went and sold 40,500 litres of fuel to Gerald at a cost of GH¢526,500.

The accused persons proceeded to Buipe and, reaching Bono Manso in the Savanah Region, Mohammed who was then driving, veered into a cashew farm after which Mohammed set the DAF Trailer Tanker ablaze and reported it as an accident to cover up their illegal activities.

Prosecution said the complainant suspected foul play and reported the incident to the Police and five of the accused persons were arrested.

Prosecution said investigations revealed that Iddrisu received GHC200,000 out of which he purchased an unregistered Toyota Camry at GHC150,000.

Additionally, the prosecution said Iddrisu purchased an 85-inch Samsung TV set and home theatre sound system.

In the case of Donkor, the prosecution said he received GH¢50,000 which he also bought a Toyota Vitz Taxicab with registration number GE3539-20.

The Court heard that Mohammed had his share of GH¢80,000.

Dauda had GH¢70,000 and he also bought a Toyota Matiz with registration number AS 4967-21

Alhaji and Kofi Adu, who are at large, had GH¢63,250 each.

According to the prosecution, the vehicles have been retrieved.

Gerald, the prosecution said, had refunded GH¢300,000 to the complainant and Mohammed had also refunded GH¢35,000 and sent the 85-inch TV set to the complainant.

The matter has been adjourned to April 14, 2025
