The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has planned to petition Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, over alleged derogatory remarks made about the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah.

According to the council, the comment allegedly made by Hon. Murtala Mohammed describing Dr JB Danquah as a traitor and a CIA operative is deemed offensive and unfortunate, given his role in Ghana’s independence struggle.
Speaking to Channel One News after pouring libation at JB Danquah’s grave in Kyebi, Kyebi Apapamuhene and warlord of Akyem Abuakwa, Osabarima Okogyeaman Apagya Fori IV, confirmed that the council will officially present its petition to the Speaker on March 7.

“We are here to show our concern to the Speaker that someone has insulted our beloved JB Danquah despite his contributions to the nation. He doesn’t deserve that. We have poured libation and tomorrow, we will send our petition.” he said.
Meanwhile, the youth of Okyeman, who have pledged their support to the traditional council, have demanded a retraction and an unqualified apology from the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central.

“We, the youth of Okyeman, are displeased with the comments. We are asking Hon. Murtala Mohammed to retract the derogatory remark and apologize to the people of Akyem Abuakwa, JB Danquah’s family, and the nation as a whole,” They stated.

“Respect Her Full Rights” – Pratt Cautions Against Premature Judgment on Gifty Oware-Mensah Return

0

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has praised Gifty Oware-Mensah, the former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), for her decision to return to Ghana and cooperate with law enforcement amid allegations related to the NSS ghost names scandal as reported by Ghana Web.

Oware-Mensah arrived in the country on March 4, 2025, following accusations of irregularities in the NSS payroll.

Despite calls from some quarters for her immediate arrest at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), Pratt believes such an action would have been unnecessary, given her voluntary return.

“She has not been found guilty in any court or even been charged. So, at this stage, I expect that you respect her full rights,” Pratt remarked during an appearance on Metro TV on March 5, 2025.

He stressed the importance of allowing due process, suggesting that if authorities have any questions for Oware-Mensah, she should be invited in a respectful manner.

Pratt also stated that media reports claiming she had fled the country were now disproven by her return, which he described as a sign of confidence.

“She appears to be confident that nothing will be found against her. I think she should avail herself to law enforcement agencies for all the opportunities she can get to clear her name,” he added.

The allegations stem from a report by The Fourth Estate, which claimed that the government had discovered 81,885 suspected ghost names on the National Service payroll.

Kente weavers admire Samira Bawumia for her taste for locally-made products

Former Second Lady Samira Bawumia Former Second Lady Samira Bawumia

The Kente Weavers Association in Techiman in the Bono East Region has commended former Second Lady Samira Bawumia for her taste in locally-made products.

Susana Bamila, a Kente weaver and former Treasurer of the Association, said Bawumia’s preference for locally woven clothes and products has inspired and kept many of the weavers in business.

“We admire her a lot for her delight in locally-made products, and that has encouraged us to remain in business and produce more. We always see the former Second Lady dressed in local fabrics, and that is highly inspiring,” she said.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Techiman, the Bono Regional capital, as Ghana marks Heritage Month, Bamila expressed concern about the poor patronage of locally-made products.

According to her, it is difficult for the association to innovate and weave more locally-made clothes and products, as the poor patronage of the products has caused many of the weavers to suffer economic losses.

“We are unable to bring more initiatives into the business because if you do so, Ghanaians will not even buy the local cloth. We call on the government to do something to make the industry attractive and to also increase Ghanaians’ appetite for locally-made products,” she lamented.

Bamila said the industry has huge economic prospects that could widen the nation’s foreign income earnings. She added that significant investments ought to be made in the industry to create jobs for the youth and preserve the nation’s culture and traditions.

“Our association used to produce huge quantities of the local Kente cloth. However, the poor patronage has discouraged many of the weavers because when they produce, they don’t get a ready market for their products,” she stated.

She expressed worry that the raw materials for the local fabric remain expensive, thereby making the cost of the locally-made cloth and products higher as well.

Susan Bawa, an apprentice at the Bono East Regional Secretariat for the Centre for National Culture Weavers Centre, indicated that weaving remains a lucrative business only when the products have a ready market with encouraging patronage.

Comparatively, she noted that though the locally-made products seem expensive, they reflect the true culture and identity of the people. She urged Ghanaians to develop a taste for them and patronise them to preserve their identity and dignity as Ghanaians.

“Our products are of high quality, and we should not forget that if we buy them, we also contribute to the economic development of the nation,” Bawa stated.

Declassified US documents show the CIA orchestrated Kwame Nkrumah’s removal

President John Dramani Mahama and at the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah President John Dramani Mahama and at the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah

President John Dramani Mahama has said that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States (US) was responsible for the removal of Ghana’s first President, the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House on March 6, 2025, the president disclosed that declassified US intelligence documents show that the CIA was behind the coup that removed Nkrumah while he was out of the country.

“The verdict of history is now loud and clear. Declassified documents from the United States archives reveal that this was a coup inspired and engineered by the CIA,” he said.

The president asserted that Nkrumah’s removal plunged the country into years of instability and marked the end of his vision for the country.

“Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the founder of our nation, envisioned an industrialised, self-reliant Ghana whose citizens have the highest standard of economic life and the greatest sense of self-esteem, rooted in patriotism and Pan-African unity.

“But on February 24, 1966, a joint military and police coup d’état shattered that dream, plunging Ghana into decades of instability and military takeovers,” he said.

About the Indenpendence Day celebration:

Thursday, March 6, 2025, is exactly 68 years since Ghana gained independence from its British colonial masters.

On Wednesday, March 6, 1957, Ghana, led by its first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, made history by becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule, marking the dawn of a new era of freedom for the sub-region and the African continent as a whole.

Unlike previous years, when grand ceremonies ignited the country’s historic Black Star Square and regional capitals, this year’s commemoration was “modest” to cut costs.

A parade was held at the seat of government, where the president addressed the nation to herald the celebrations.

This year’s celebration at the Presidency, on the theme: “Reflect, Review, Reset,” featured key activities such as a Military Guard of Honour to be reviewed by the President and a cultural performance by two groups of basic school pupils.

There was also a poetry recital by a senior high school student.

Similar “modest” celebrations are expected to be held by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the country.

Recent celebrations had been held on a rotational basis, mostly outside the capital, to engender inclusiveness and decentralisation – but the rotational policy has been reversed by the government as part of measures to cut expenditure.

Government, MTN agree to work together on ‘One Million Coders’ programme

Sam George signs agreement with MTN Sam George signs agreement with MTN

MTN Group and Ghana have signed an agreement to work together to support the government’s flagship ‘One Million Coders” programme to equip young Ghanaians with artificial intelligence, coding and digital skills to drive the country’s digital transformation.

On the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, and Mr Ralph Mupita, MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore areas for collaboration on what the Minister called the flagship initiative of the new administration of President John Mahama.

This was in a statement issued by MTN Ghana and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

The statement quoted the Minister as saying “We engaged with the MTN Group and expressed our desire for a partnership that will lead to fuel the capacity of young Ghanaians in the area of artificial intelligence, digital technology, data governance and cybersecurity. MTN did not hesitate to offer to support the initiative.”

It further quoted the Minister as saying “We recognise that as part of its 25th anniversary, MTN (Ghana) is making significant investments in Ghana. The MTN building, donated to the government of Ghana, will become one of our centres for excellence for artificial intelligence and software development. We are committed to backing MTN in this endeavour.”

It said Mupita thanked the Minister and his delegation for two days of constructive engagements and for choosing MTN as a trusted partner, saying, “We are very focused on understanding the strategy Ghana has and how we as MTN Group and MTN Ghana can support it.”

It further quoted Mr Mupita as saying “We thank you for your commitment in terms of creating an enabling environment for us to carry on the work we are doing, very humbly though, to support the building out of the digital ecosystem that will be a catalyst for growth and expansion and meet the socioeconomic objectives of the Ghanaian government.”

The statement said, “Given that around 3000 languages are spoken across Africa, it was incumbent on Africans to ensure that they worked on their own large language models to develop the solutions made possible through generative AI” quoting Mupita as saying “We must develop our own talent on the African continent; we must develop our own software engineers and we must be doing more around coding to enable us to all be future fit.”

The statement also quoted Ebenezer Asante, MTN Group Senior Vice President for Markets, as saying “MTN is delighted to be part of the initiative, which is closely aligned to MTN’s strategic intent, adding “Between MTN and Ghana, we will partner using common projects to advance the cause of African development.”

It said, “The MoU follows the introduction in 2023 of the MTN Skills Academy in multiple MTN operating countries, including Ghana. The MTN Skills Academy aims to provide access to digital and financial skills training across the continent.”

It added that “The Academy provides a range of courses including coding, web development, digital marketing and data analytics with the aim of ensuring 60 per cent of youth and adults have at least basic proficiency in sustainable digital skills by the end of 2025.”

You’ve got more own goals than actual goals

IshowSpeed and Jamie Carragher IshowSpeed and Jamie Carragher

Popular American Youtuber IshowSpeed subtly jabbed Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher over his goal scoring record during a sports programme on television.

During the UEFA Champions League broadcast on CBS Sports on February 5, 2025, Carragher questioned the YouTuber’s assertion that Cristiano Ronaldo having more goals than Messi makes him the Greatest Footballer of All Time (GOAT).

The sports pundit quizzed whether the goals Ronaldo scored, which IshowSpeed was referring to, included own goals.

“The goals you mean, own goals?” Carragher asked.

The question did not sit well with IshowSpeed, who told Carragher that he has more own goals than actual goals in his career, saying, “Let’s not talk about own goals, because you’ve got more own goals than actual goals. But let’s not get into that.”

Carragher quickly asked the YouTuber to quit the jokes and focus on the Messi-Ronaldo debate instead.

“I get that you’re trying to kill the joke. Let’s get back to Messi and Ronaldo,” the ex-Liverpool defender said.

Carragher scored seven own goals in England’s top flight, which puts him second on the list of players with the most own goals in Premier League history. In fact, only Richard Dunne scored more.

Ghana’s Independence Ignited Freedom Flame Across Africa – Mahama

Ghana’s Independence Ignited Freedom Flame Across Africa – Mahama
A Daily Guide Report Ghana’s freedom from colonial rule on 6th March 1957 ignited the flame of freedom across Sub-Saharan Africa, inspiring other nations, their youth, and colonised territories to pursue self-determination, President John Dramani Mahama has stated.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration held at Jubilee House, he stated, “Our independence not only set us on the path of nationhood, but it also ignited the flame of freedom across Sub-Saharan Africa, inspiring other nations, their youth, and colonised territories to pursue self-determination.”

President Mahama, thus noted that Ghana’s Independence is the most important event that must always be commemorated.

He, however, noted that the grand celebration which is organized every year has been scaled down, hence the hosting of this year’ event at the presidency.

He also pointed out that hosting the celebrations at the presidency ensures the symbolic significance of Independence Day is preserved, while also helping to demystify the seat of government and make it more accessible to the people.

“Independence Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s struggle for freedom and honour the sacrifices of our forebears who fought for self-rule,” he said.

“It reinforces our national identity, unity, and patriotism, while offering a moment for reflection on our progress and the challenges that lie ahead,” he added.

President Mahama called on all Ghanaians to use this occasion as a time to reflect on the nation’s history.

“To learn from the lessons it teaches and, by doing so, carve out a new path for progress and development,” he concluded.

I want to make it clear, my suspension was not due to any misconduct or failure

0

According to a report from Adomonline. In a recent statement that has captured the attention of stakeholders in Ghana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, Eric Adjei has taken the opportunity to clarify the circumstances surrounding his suspension from the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP). As the controversy surrounding this issue continues to unfold, his remarks aim to shed light on the events that led to this significant development and to address the concerns of the public.

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) was launched as part of the government’s broader efforts to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in Ghana. NEIP aims to provide support for startups and small businesses through funding, training, and mentorship, fostering a vibrant entrepreneurial landscape in the country. Given its importance in stimulating economic growth and job creation, any changes in its leadership or management can have far-reaching implications.

Eric Adjei’s suspension from NEIP has raised eyebrows and sparked debates among entrepreneurs, stakeholders, and the general public. Initial reports suggested that the suspension was linked to internal disagreements and controversies regarding the management of the plan. As a prominent figure within the NEIP framework, Adjei’s departure seemed to signal potential turmoil within the organization.

However, the exact reasons for his suspension and the implications of this decision were not immediately clear, leading to speculation and concern among those invested in the entrepreneurial community. In light of this uncertainty, Adjei felt it was essential to address the situation directly.

In a recent interview, Eric Adjei provided a detailed account of the events leading to his suspension. He emphasized that his departure was not indicative of any wrongdoing on his part but rather a result of differences in vision regarding the direction of NEIP. Adjei articulated that while he remains committed to the goals of the NEIP, there were fundamental disagreements about strategy that could not be reconciled.

“I want to make it clear that my suspension was not due to any misconduct or failure to perform my duties,” Adjei stated. “Rather, it stemmed from differing perspectives on how to best support and promote entrepreneurship in Ghana. My vision for NEIP was one of inclusivity and broader engagement with the entrepreneurial community.”

Adjei also took the opportunity to address the concerns raised by entrepreneurs and stakeholders in the wake of his suspension. He reassured them that the NEIP remains a vital initiative for fostering entrepreneurship and that its objectives have not changed despite the leadership changes.

“Entrepreneurs should not be disheartened by my suspension,” he urged. “NEIP is still fully committed to supporting startups and small businesses. The resources, training programs, and funding opportunities will continue to be available, and I encourage everyone to engage with the plan actively.”

The significance of the NEIP cannot be overstated, particularly as Ghana seeks to bolster its economy through entrepreneurship. Small businesses are crucial for job creation and economic diversification, and initiatives like NEIP play a pivotal role in providing the necessary support to emerging entrepreneurs.

In light of the current economic climate, where many are grappling with the effects of global challenges, the need for effective entrepreneurial support systems is more critical than ever. Adjei’s commitment to these principles underscores the ongoing relevance of NEIP in the national discourse.

Looking ahead, Eric Adjei expressed optimism about the future of NEIP and the entrepreneurial landscape in Ghana. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector actors, and the entrepreneurial community.

“Moving forward, we need to unite our efforts to create an ecosystem that nurtures innovation and supports entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey,” he stated. “I remain passionate about fostering entrepreneurship, and I believe there are many opportunities ahead for both NEIP and the wider entrepreneurial community.”

In the wake of Adjei’s remarks, reactions from the entrepreneurial community have been mixed. While some have expressed concern about the potential impact of the leadership changes on NEIP’s initiatives, others have voiced support for Adjei’s vision and commitment to entrepreneurship.

Many entrepreneurs have called for clarity regarding the future direction of NEIP and assurance that ongoing programs will not be disrupted. The need for transparency and communication from NEIP leadership is paramount, as stakeholders seek to understand how the organization will navigate this transitional period.

As the situation continues to evolve, both Eric Adjei and NEIP leadership have urged entrepreneurs and stakeholders to remain engaged with the plan. Adjei emphasized that the success of NEIP relies on active participation from the entrepreneurial community and constructive dialogue among all stakeholders.

“Entrepreneurship thrives on collaboration and partnership,” he noted. “I encourage everyone to remain engaged, share their ideas, and contribute to shaping the future of entrepreneurship in Ghana.”

Eric Adjei’s clarification on the NEIP suspension saga serves as an important reminder of the complexities within organizations dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship. As he articulates his commitment to supporting the entrepreneurial community, the focus now shifts to ensuring that NEIP continues to deliver on its mission and objectives.

The future of entrepreneurship in Ghana hinges on effective leadership, collaboration, and the unwavering support of the community. As stakeholders navigate this transitional period, the emphasis on unity and shared vision will be crucial in driving sustainable growth and innovation in the nation’s entrepreneurial landscape. The dialogue initiated by Adjei’s remarks will hopefully pave the way for a more robust and resilient NEIP, ultimately benefiting entrepreneurs across the country.

Ghana’s aid dependency won’t be resolved by rhetoric alone-Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised that Ghana’s reliance on donor aid and external financial support cannot be overcome through rhetoric alone but requires decisive and sustained action.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration held at Jubilee House, President Mahama acknowledged the frequent discussions about the country’s dependence on imports, donor aid, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailouts.

However, he warned that repeating these concerns without implementing concrete solutions risks reducing them to mere clichés.

“Discussions about our independence often highlight our reliance on imports, donor aid, and IMF bailouts as signs of continued dependency. This reminder is repeated so often that, while undeniably real, it risks becoming a cliché,” he said.

He pointed out the contradiction in advocating for self-reliance while still seeking financial assistance from external sources, calling it “meaningless” to proclaim self-sufficiency while continuing to march with a begging bowl in hand.

“Proclaiming self-reliance while marching straight into the hands of donor agencies, begging bowl in hand, is meaningless,” he stressed.

To tackle this challenge, President Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration is fully committed to restoring economic stability by implementing policies that focus on fiscal discipline and self-sufficiency.

“To break this cycle of dependence and restore our economy, my administration is formulating policies based on fiscal discipline and living within our means,” he concluded.

Support Mahama’s reset agenda – CPP to Ghanaians

0

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has urged Ghanaians to rally behind President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to reset the country, calling for national reflection, review, and rebuilding of the economy.

According to the party, the initiative outlined by President Mahama will benefit all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation, creed, or ideology, if successfully implemented.

In a statement issued on Thursday, March 6, the CPP commended the president for his decision to scale down the 68th Independence Anniversary Commemoration, saving the nation GHS13.5 million an amount they stated represents 90% of the previous cost.

The CPP noted that during the 66th Independence Anniversary in 2023, it had called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations until the country was in a better state.

The party added that even as far back as the 55th Independence Anniversary in 2012, prominent CPP members had made similar calls, launching both social media campaigns and street engagements to advocate for change.

“The initiative to scale down the Independence Celebrations, as part of the reset agenda by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, is indeed laudable,” the statement read.

The CPP further highlighted a significant moment during the recent National Economic Dialogue organized by the State, where a key admission was made at the opening plenary. Speakers acknowledged that the economic success of the First Republic under the CPP remains unmatched to this day and should be a model for the nation’s progress.

“This was indeed a humbling admission, and the CPP is proud to have set a high standard of positive achievements during its time in power,” the statement added.

International relations professor highlights Ghana’s strong ties with Canada at UniMAC lecture

0

Associate Professor, University of Fraser Valley in Canada, Edward Akuffo.

Associate Professor at the University of Fraser Valley in Canada, Edward Akuffo, has emphasised Canada’s commitment to Ghana’s development as both nations strengthen their relations amid a shifting global landscape.

Delivering a lecture on Friday at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) campus in Dzorwulu, Accra, he highlighted Ghana’s consistent role in global peacekeeping as a key factor in Canada’s continued support.

The lecture, titled “Africa’s Geopolitical Space and Canada-Africa Relations in a Shifting Global Order,” explored Canada’s evolving role in Africa. The continent is increasingly fostering close cooperation with BRICS, moving beyond traditional partners such as the United Kingdom and the United States.

Established in 2009, BRICS seeks to strengthen economic ties among member states. The bloc has since expanded to ten countries, including key African economies like South Africa and Egypt.
Prof Akuffo commended Ghana’s soft power, emphasising its democratic stability and leadership in global affairs.

“Ghana has contributed to UN peacekeeping operations for a very long time. In fact, it is one of the top 10 contributors to UN peacekeeping operations. Since 1992, Ghana has remained democratic, and although there are economic challenges, it looks like Ghanaians, every four years since 1992, have elected a new government. That is a positive sign of Ghana’s soft power.
“And it is on the basis of this that, for example, the Canadian government continues to support Ghana’s development,” he stated.

He further noted that Canada had selected Ghana as a beneficiary of The Elsie Initiative Fund, which aims to increase the participation of uniformed women in UN peace operations. Ghana’s Armed Forces was among the first to participate in the initiative when it was launched in 2017.

Addressing Canada’s economic ties with Africa, Prof Akuffo revealed that Canada has significant investments in Ghana’s mining sector. However, he expressed concern about the environmental and human security risks posed by illegal mining.

“In fact, perhaps one area that may be of particular interest to the Canadian government, to mining companies, is the issue of illegal mining or what is called in Ghana, Galamsey, because this not only threatens the environment, but it also poses significant danger to human rights and human security,” he explained.

The foreign policy lecture, organised by UniMAC’s International Relations Directorate with support from the university’s Directorate of Research, Innovation and Development (DRID), attracted lecturers, students, and journalists.

Speaking to reporters after the lecture, Dr Lawrencia Agyepong, Director of the International Relations Directorate, described the engagement as part of a broader collaboration between UniMAC and the University of Fraser Valley.

“University of Fraser Valley is one of the institutions that we are having collaborations with. One of the visions of our current vice-chancellor is to give an international outlook to the University of Media, Arts and Communication, and because of that, we are forming collaborations with institutions across the globe,” Dr Agyepong said.

Attendees expressed a deeper appreciation of the Canada-Ghana relationship, particularly its impact on student visa processes for Ghanaian students seeking education in Canada.

“I got to learn that because of the relationship Ghana has with Canada, international students from Ghana are favoured a lot, so getting a school in Canada is easier,” said Rita Nsiah, a Level 300 student at the university.

“If we continue to have good relations with Canada, then Ghanaian students are really going to benefit from it,” added Frank Obeng, another attendee.

Canada has reached a first-time air transport agreement with Ghana, opening the door to more travel options and business opportunities between the two countries.

The agreement, announced by Transport Minister Anita Anand, allows multiple airlines from both nations to operate flights, with a limit of 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights. Airlines can begin offering services immediately.

“Ghana is a growing market for Canada, and I am pleased to see this first agreement open the door to new opportunities for travellers and businesses in both countries,” said Anand. “This agreement will connect more passengers and strengthen our cultural and commercial ties.”

Minister of Export Promotion Mary Ng highlighted the economic benefits, stating, “This agreement will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and drive economic growth.”

The deal aligns with Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which aims to expand international air service agreements and boost competition.

Canada now has air transport agreements covering more than 125 countries.

Kumawood movie star Maame Serwaa Kumawood movie star Maame Serwaa

Kumawood movie star Maame Serwaa has revealed what she admires most about movie and media personality Nana Ama McBrown—her attitude towards criticism and the way she carries herself.

Appearing on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo, she was asked by host Nana Romeo about her relationship with McBrown.

“We’re very cool. That’s my mother. I have so much respect for that woman,” she responded reflexively.

“Let’s put aside the respect people have for her—she respects herself. When she is attacked, she keeps quiet and uses her actions to prove her critics wrong. That’s the one thing I admire most about her.”

The actress, who began her career as a child, agreed with Romeo when he mentioned that he had seen a discussion suggesting McBrown was the most successful woman in Ghana.

“I love seeing women winning. I love it so much. In past eras, men were on top. This time around, a woman is proving that we can do better,” she said, adding, “It shouldn’t always be about trending for negative reasons; you should trend for positive things, too.”

According to Maame Serwaa, McBrown is a leader who respects herself, allowing her work and actions to speak for her.

“That’s what I’m trying to be as well,” she emphasized.

Concluding, Maame Serwaa, born Clara Amoateng Benson, reflected on McBrown’s approach to criticism, saying, “People will talk. There’s no need to respond. Just let your work prove them wrong.”

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama

The president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has called for lasting peace in Bawku and adjoining areas following a long-lasting conflict that has claimed the lives of many and destroyed several properties.

According to him, such conflicts hinder developmental projects and stifle Ghana’s democracy.

The president’s call comes at a time when tensions are heightened at Bawku and its environs as ethnic and chieftaincy disputes have left many displaced and deserted.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House, on Thursday, March 6, 2025, President Mahama called for a concerted effort to smoke the peace pipe and embrace peaceful cohesion.

“In the spirit of unity and brotherhood, this independence represents, I wish to speak to you directly, my brothers and sisters in Bawku and everywhere in our land where conflict is ragging. I do not speak as president, but as a son and brother in whose hands you have entrusted a solemn duty. The people of Bawku and other areas, it is time for lasting peace to prevail. Our children deserve to inherit a peaceful land where their dreams are nurtured, not where their nightmares are relived. They deserve to inherit a land where are markets are buzzing with trade, not tension and conflicts. They deserve to inherit schools that echo with learning, not melancholy,” he said.

Mahama also stressed the need not to be swayed by mistrust and the experiences of past happenings.

“Let us give renewal of friendship a chance. Let us give peace a chance. This is not an invitation to forget the past, it is far from it, it is an invitation to live above it,” he added.

Injuries as Mozambique police fire on opposition protest

Mozambique's opposition leader has vowed to continue anti-government protests Mozambique’s opposition leader has vowed to continue anti-government protests

At least a dozen people were injured after Mozambican police violently dispersed a protest led by opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane, the runner-up in last year’s disputed presidential election, Mondlane’s team and a civil society group say.

Eyewitnesses and Mondlane’s aides said the police fired live rounds at the opposition leader’s convoy and the anti-government protesters who had joined him on the streets of the capital, Maputo, on Wednesday.

Neither the police nor the authorities have commented.

The protests came as President Daniel Chapo, who took office in January, was due to sign a deal after talks with other political parties to end months of protests over the disputed election.

Mondlane, who has been calling for the protests, was excluded from the talks leading to the ceremony.

A communique from Mondlane’s office said the opposition leader had been leading a procession on Wednesday afternoon when his convoy came under fire.

“A contingent of the UIR [a rapid intervention police unit] rammed into Venâncio Mondlane’s convoy and began a barrage of gunfire, using live ammunition and tear gas,” it added.

In response to the incident, Interior Minister Paulo Chachine told reporters that the police had a mission to prevent any attempt to disrupt the deal-signing ceremony.

He denied that there had been an attempt to kill Mondlane.

Sixteen people were injured, according to local civil society group Plataforma Decide. The BBC has not been able to confirm the casualty figures.

Mondlane’s team said two children from a nearby school had died from the shooting. It said 16 people had been injured, including their camera person, with others seriously affected by tear gas.

In a statement, it said Mondlane’s condition was “unknown, and his whereabouts are causing concern among his entire team”.

A video shared on social media shows the moment when gunshots started ringing out as the procession approached what looks like an armoured vehicle on the streets. People run for safety and the crowds disappear, while the gunfire continues.

More images of people bloodied from the incident have also been shared online.

A witness, who was among the protesters, told the AFP news agency that police had started shooting, as if it was an “ambush scenario. It was just a march”.

“I saw some people bleeding from their wounds. My friend was wounded in the leg. I also saw a child who was shot and lost his life in hospital,” AFP quoted 27-year old protester Silvestre Alexandre as saying.

Mozambique’s former colonial power, Portugal, has condemned “the unacceptable attack on Venâncio Mondlane’s convoy” while calling for “restraint from violence and respect for fundamental rights”.

In a post on X, the Portuguese foreign affairs ministry has also offered condolences to the bereaved families.

Since President Chapo took over in January, he has made promises for a broad political dialogue that would include various sectors of the society, in order to end the country’s post-election crisis.

Some analysts have however criticised him for excluding Mondlane from the talks.

On Wednesday, Mondlane condemned the political deal, calling it “an agreement of people without the people”. He said that protests would continue.

“If they don’t do what the people want, they won’t govern Mozambique,” he said.

Since October, close to 400 people have died in violence linked to the protests, according to civil society organisations.

Policies alone won’t save our reality, action will

0

President John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated that policies alone, no matter how well crafted or well-intentioned, will not change Ghana’s reality unless backed by concrete action.

According to him, real transformation requires bold steps beyond policy formulation to drive economic growth and national development.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House on March 6, themed “Reflect, Review, and Reset,” President Mahama emphasized the need for proactive measures to secure Ghana’s future.

“This is a defining moment, but policies alone no matter how sound or well-intentioned will not change our reality. Action will. As President, I am taking the necessary steps to create growth opportunities and enhance our economic independence,” he stated.

He urged young Ghanaians to seize opportunities and play an active role in building a self-sufficient nation.

“Young Ghanaians must step up to the plate, seize these opportunities, and contribute to building a self-sufficient nation. Ghana’s economic future is in your hands,” he added.

The president’s remarks underscored his administration’s commitment to fostering economic empowerment, encouraging innovation, and ensuring that Ghana’s independence translates into sustainable development.

We’re proud to celebrate our nation’s resilience & progress – Mahama Ayariga

0

As Ghana celebrates its 68th Independence Day anniversary, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga has urged all Ghanaians to unite for a brighter future.

He noted that Ghana has come a long way hence it is deserving to celebrate the nation’s resilience and progress

In a post on his X page, he said “Happy 68th Independence Day, Ghana! Proud to celebrate our nation’s resilience & progress. Let’s unite for a brighter future! #Ghana@68 #GhanaFirst”

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Ghana saved a substantial amount by hosting the 68th Independence Anniversary celebration at the Jubilee House instead of the traditional Independence Square.

Delivering his speech at the ceremony on Thursday, March 6, 2025, President Mahama revealed that the event had initially been estimated to cost GHS 20 million if held at Independence Square.

“This year, we received an estimate of at least 20 million Ghana cedis for holding the event at the Independence Square on the same scale as the previous year,” he stated.

However, considering the current economic crisis, he explained that it would have been “unconscionable” to spend such an amount on a few hours of celebration. As a result, the government decided to relocate the event to the Jubilee House to cut costs.

“This decision will save us 95% of the estimated cost of the event,” the President emphasized.

President Mahama further revealed that the state spent GHS 15 million on last year’s celebration in Koforidua and GHS 13.7 million the previous year in Ho, Volta Region.

Despite the cost-cutting measures, he assured that the significance of Independence Day remains intact, highlighting its role in inspiring other Sub-Saharan African nations to fight for independence and self-determination.

“Nonetheless, this scale-down does not diminish the importance of this occasion in any way. It is the single most important event in our history, as it sets us on the path of nationhood

President Mahama discloses cost of 68th Independence Day celebration

0

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the 68th Independence Day celebration cost the country only GH¢1.5 million.

Speaking at the celebration at the Jubilee House, the president indicated that GH¢1.5 million is just 10% of the GH¢15 million used for the same celebration in 2024.

He added that the country would have spent about GH¢20 million if it had held a grand celebration like what was seen in 2024.

“Today’s celebration costs GH¢1.5 million, which is only one-tenth of what it would have cost to hold it at the Independence Square. The cost of last year’s celebration in Koforidua was GH¢15 million. The previous year, when it was held in Ho, it cost GH¢13.7 million.

“Holding the same event at the Independence Square this year on the same scale as previous years would have cost a minimum of GH¢20 million,” the president said.

He added that the reduction in the scale of the Independence Day celebration does not reduce the significance of the day.

BoG HQ Cost Below Industry Average – Officials

0

Dr Johnson Asiama

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has revealed that the total cost of constructing its new headquarters is below the average industry market rate for similar projects. In a recent briefing, Dr. Johnson Asiamah, Governor of the BoG, provided details about the financials of the highly scrutinised building, emphasising that the final cost remains competitive within the broader construction sector.

Addressing concerns over the soaring costs of the project, Dr. Asiamah explained that while the budget for the new headquarters has increased over time due to expanded scope and additional requirements, it still compares favourably to other similar high-security, technologically advanced infrastructure projects in the sub-region.

The final project cost, standing at $261.8 million, was cited as a necessary investment to meet the security, operational efficiency, and sustainability demands of a modern central bank.

“While the cost of the project has grown due to necessary additions like advanced security systems, ICT infrastructure, and energy-efficient technologies, we are confident that the overall investment is within reasonable market rates for such a specialized and complex development,” said Dr. Asiamah.

The BoG began planning for the new headquarters in 2011, and after several years of deliberation and structural audits, the decision was made to replace the aging building that had served the bank since the 1950s.

In 2020, the construction project began at West Ridge, Accra, with Goldkey Properties Limited selected as the contractor following a competitive procurement process approved by the Public Procurement Authority.

Initially estimated at $81.8 million, the project cost saw multiple revisions as the scope expanded.

The final figure of $261.8 million includes not only the core building but also significant investments in security, sustainability features, and building management systems, which all contributed to the increase in costs.

Additionally, separate contracts were awarded for specialised infrastructure, including network systems ($8.6 million), electronic security ($15.8 million), and furniture ($11.1 million).

The BoG’s leadership emphasised that the final cost aligns with the demands of the project and remains competitive with industry standards.

Dr. Asiamah also reiterated the bank’s commitment to transparency, stating that the new Board of the Bank of Ghana, set to be sworn in next week, will conduct a thorough value-for-money audit to ensure that every dollar spent meets the required standards.

“Public trust is paramount in all our actions,” Dr. Asiamah said.

“We are fully committed to ensuring that the resources used in this project reflect the best value for money, in line with the long-term needs of the bank and the nation,” he said.

The new headquarters, according to the officials, is a key infrastructure investment to support the Bank of Ghana’s evolving responsibilities, including price stability, financial sector resilience, and economic growth.

Independence Day: Centre Ghana’s development on NDPC – Prof. Yendaw

0

By Philip Tengzu

Wa, (UW/R), March 6, GNA – As Ghana marks its 68th Independence celebration, there is a need for a legal regime to mandate successive governments to implement the development plans and policies of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC).

The NDPC was established and entrusted with the mandate to design concrete and achievable development plans, policies, and programmes tailored towards Ghana’s sustainable development, but those plans were left to “die on the shelves” while Ghana wallowed in a development quagmire.

“We should institute a law …, whether you like it or not, whether party A or party B you cannot deflect from that national growth trajectory ….”, Professor Elijah Yendaw, a Professor at the Faculty of Public Policy and Governance, SDD University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), said.

He said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa on Thursday on the commemoration of Ghana’s Independence Day, on the theme: “Reflect, Review and Reset”.

Prof. Yendaw, the Director of the Centre for Migration, Security and International Relations at the SDD-UBIDS, attributed Ghana’s underdevelopment to the desire of successive governments to satisfy their political party’s whims to the detriment of Ghana’s development needs.

“One key institution that politicians were supposed to be listening to, working with, and ensuring that we have continuity of development programmes and projects is the National Development Planning Commission, but what do we see, they abandon all these beautiful development programmes and policies”, he explained.

He indicated that a law binding all governments to implement the NDPC’s development priorities would put the country on the right trajectory.

Talking about the theme of the celebration, “Reflect, Review and Reset”, Prof Yendaw indicated that it would encourage and trigger positive thinking among Ghanaians to support the President John Dramani Mahama-led government to reset the country and put it on a “sound footing” for development.

He observed that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s declaration of Ghana’s independence on 6th March, 1957 meant that Ghana was “dis-bonded from the colonial shackles” and to leap the country into a growth path – economically, politically, socially, and culturally.

Prof Yendaw, however, observed that Dr. Nkrumah’s “brilliant idea” of total liberation of Ghana from the control of the colonial masters and uniting Africa was short-lived by military interventions.

“Many of the development plans that Nkrumah initiated, some projects were finished, successive governments came in, some were abandoned, and some were continued.

So, we have had a very checkered history when it comes to our growth and development as a country, starting from the Nkrumah regime”, Prof. Yendaw lamented.

Maame Serwaa dismisses rumours of romantic ties with Bill Asamoah, Frank Naro

0

Kumawood star Maame Serwaa Kumawood star Maame Serwaa

Kumawood star Maame Serwaa has shot down rumours that she had amorous relationships with entertainment personalities Bill Asamoah, Frank Naro, and Awal Mohammed on multiple occasions.

“Unless you have more names to mention, I have had nothing to do with all these men you’ve mentioned,” she told Nana Romeo on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo.

She explained that she had only “professional relationships” with them.

“If you work and you are not friendly or do not smile, you’ll have problems with people,” she added.

She lamented that this outlook was what the public, unfortunately, continues to misconstrue as romance.

Thus, she opined, “Ghanaians don’t like to see men and women become friends.”

“All these seniors you’ve mentioned, I only work with them. Even if we’re not in the same field, we’re all in the same entertainment industry. When you meet your people, you [must] get close and be friendly. It’s nothing bad.”

Maame Serwaa noted that “all my life,” she had been discreet with her romantic relationships.

“If I don’t want you to know, you wouldn’t,” she added.

She asked the public to disregard rumours concerning her private life from all sources, including bloggers.

“If I do not put such information out myself, please, it’s a lie,” she stressed.

The actress clarified that she had nothing against bloggers, acknowledging that their work was necessary for their livelihood. However, she urged them to adhere to best practices and “verify your information before you put it out there.”

Maame Serwaa noted that, unlike before, when she kept her relationships secret for the sake of it, she had now come to the realisation that it was genuinely a private matter that should be respected as such, pending her voluntary disclosure.

She confirmed that she was currently in a relationship.

“I made it public recently that I’m dating. Anyone I’ve dated is private to me. But this time around, I felt, you know what, it’s not [necessarily] a secret, but it’s a private thing to me. I’ll let you know what I want you to know, but it doesn’t mean I won’t date or see people. I do that—we’re all human. But I’ll let you know what I want you to know. Yeah, I’m in a relationship,” she said.

Maame Serwaa, who has been acting since childhood, resisted identifying the man who surprised her at her birthday party and was rumoured to be her current lover.

She turns 26 in August 2025.

More details of the NSS scandal

More details are emerging of the NSS scandal following the return of Gifty Oware-Mensah, a former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), who was accused of absconding from the country over the scandal.

Experts of the NSS scandal investigation, which was conducted by The 4th Estate, broadcast by TV3 on Wednesday, March 6, 2025, pointed to a number of mind-blowing infractions.

The investigation showed that a number of people who were between the ages of 80 and 93 years received NSS placement.

For instance, a 93-year-old Nimatu Salifu was listed as a UDS graduate, posted to Kpiyagi D/A Primary School in the Upper East Region.

A 91-year-old, Ruth Abdulai, a supposed graduate of UDS, was posted to Adakura Primary School in the Upper East Region.

An 82-year-old, Mahamadu Ali, another supposed UDS graduate, was posted to Anyinabrim Anglican School in Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region.

There were also instances of personnel with fake index numbers from schools like the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Dambai College of Education (DACE), VVU, and the Tamale Technical University.

The investigation also revealed instances of persons with fake IDs and manipulated biometric data on the NSS payroll.

For example, a 34-year-old female who was captured on the payroll had the ID card of a male with the name Joel Sateen.

It also showed that Kwame Donkor, the supposed Kenyan who was included in the NSS payroll, was actually an impersonation.

It found that the picture used for Kwame Donkor was actually that of a Kenyan named Emmanuel Mutio, who is a human resource manager of i3 Technologies in Kenya.

Details of Kwame Donkor on the NSS system showed that he was posted to Kasoogo Basic School.

No need for celebration – Dr Bannor to government on 22% T-Bill rate

0

Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson

Following the announcement by the government, through the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, that Treasury Bill (T-Bill) rates are on a downward trajectory – a development signaling positive progress for the economy – the Director in charge of Communications and Public Policy at the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy, Dr. Frank Bannor, has shared his perspective on the matter.

According to him, there is no need to celebrate the purchase of T-Bill with coupon rates between 19% and 22%.

He asserted that individuals who invest in T-Bills will not see any real value on their monies if inflation remains high.

In an interview with GhanaWeb Business, Dr. Bannor stated that, “This clearly portrays a lack of understanding of economics by some individuals in government. They make posts suggesting that the government has auctioned T-Bills at 19% and 22%, and for that reason, the Mahama government should be praised. This does not warrant any jubilation. Assuming the end-of-year inflation target is 19%, this means a zero or -3% real value for investment.”

“Inflation currently sits around 23%, while the lending rate, primarily driven by the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), is between 34.5% and 35.5%. This implies that holding all other factors constant, the average Ghanaian who invests in T-Bills at the current rate is losing money in real terms,” he added.

Dr Bannor further stated that Ghanaians should brace themselves for an increase in non-performing loans.

“The government should desist from manufacturing economic indicators and figures to suit its agenda of appearing favorable in the eyes of the public. The international community and financial watchdogs like the World Bank and IMF would discredit Ghana if figures are fabricated for political reasons,” he warned.

On March 3, 2025, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced that Ghana had saved approximately GH¢1 billion due to the recent reduction in Treasury Bill rates.

He stated that the savings would be redirected toward critical sectors of the economy to promote development and ensure a stable and prosperous environment for Ghanaians.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue under the theme “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together,” Dr. Ato Forson emphasised the need to reduce borrowing and lower the cost of debt as part of efforts to generate more funds for national development and economic restructuring.

It would be recalled that on Friday, February 28, 2025, Treasury Bill yields experienced a sharp decline.

According to the latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana, rates that started the year between 28% and 30% have now fallen to an average range of 20% to 22%.

At the start of the year, the 91-day Treasury Bill stood at 28.34% but has now dropped to 20.79%, reflecting a 760-basis point decline.

Similarly, the 182-day bill has fallen from 28.96% to 22.98%, a 600-basis point drop.

The arrest of an army general from South Sudan’s main opposition is a “grave violation” of the peace deal that ended a five-year civil war, an opposition spokesperson has told the BBC.

Gen Gabriel Duop Lam was arrested earlier this week, along with other senior officials of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO).

The detainees are all allies of Vice-President Riek Machar, whose rift with President Salva Kiir sparked a devastating war in 2013.

On Thursday morning, Machar’s spokesperson said that the SPLM-IO did not know how their officials were or where they were being held.

“We are doing our best to avoid any escalation to the situation, however we need our partners in peace to demonstrate the political will to assure that this country will not go back to war again,” Puok Both Baluang told the BBC’s Newsday programme.

President Kiir has insisted that South Sudan will not return to war, government spokesperson Michael Makuei told reporters in the capital Juba on Wednesday.

Makuei added that the opposition figures were arrested because they were “in conflict with the law”.

South Sudan is the world’s newest nation, after seceding from Sudan in 2011. But just two years later, a civil war erupted when Kiir sacked his entire cabinet and accused Machar of instigating a failed coup.

After five years, with 400,000 lives lost, and 2.5 million people forced from their homes, a peace deal was agreed in 2018.

But it has been fraught ever since.

Gen Lam is in charge of the military wing of the opposition party, which is yet to be integrated into the army. He was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Another Machar ally, Oil Minister Puot Kang Chol, was taken by security forces in the middle of the night.

Machar’s house in the capital, Juba, was surrounded by troops from the South Sudanese army overnight before they were later withdrawn.

All other senior military officials allied with Machar have been placed under house arrest, the BBC understands.

The arrests follow reports that the White Army militia had seized a strategic town in Upper Nile state close to the Ethiopian border, after clashes with government troops.

The White Army fought alongside Machar during the civil war.

Some in the army, loyal to Kiir, have accused Machar’s allies of supporting the rebels.

Machar’s spokesperson told the BBC that the current fighting between the White Army and security forces “would have been avoided” if the leadership of the national army had abided by the peace agreement.

The UN and African Union have warned that the violence in this area could potentially spread.

Ter Manyang, head of the Juba-based Center for Peace and Advocacy, told Reuters that the fighting in this area could threaten the peace deal.

“The country is likely to slide to war unless the situation is managed by the top leadership of the country,” he said.

The country has never held an election – these are now due to take place in 2026 after years of delay.

Late Capital O2 CEO’s Multi-Million Mansion Left to Rot on Accra-Cape Coast Road

A viral video showcasing the abandoned mansion of the late Dr. John Daniel Otoo, founder and CEO of Capital O2 Natural Health Company, has sparked widespread reactions on social media. The once-luxurious property, located along the Accra-Cape Coast road, now stands desolate, overgrown with weeds, and stripped of its former glory.

According to YEN, The video, shared by popular Ghanaian blogger Bonesman TV on TikTok, captures the eerie state of the mansion. The blogger, who frequently travels the Accra-Cape Coast route, revealed that the property’s grandeur initially caught his attention. However, upon closer inspection, he discovered it was completely abandoned.

“I’ve been seeing this huge mansion left alone in the bush on the Accra to Cape Coast road. Does anyone have an idea why it’s left abandoned like that?” Bonesman TV asked in the video’s caption. He noted that the mansion’s doors were locked, with no signs of life or maintenance. The exterior paint had peeled off, revealing bare walls, while the compound was overrun by wild vegetation.

Social media users were quick to identify the property as belonging to the late Dr. Otoo, who passed away in 2021. Many speculated about the reasons behind the mansion’s abandonment, with some attributing it to family disputes.

One user, Stella Wilson915, commented, “The owner is called Capital O2, and he’s dead. The family members said they won’t give it to his children, and there are small, small issues.” Another user, Nita Araba Koomson, reminisced about visiting the mansion during the late CEO’s mother’s funeral, stating, “The way it was beautiful when it was first built… I have been in this building when the late Capital O2’s mum passed away.”

The video also drew humorous reactions, with some users referencing horror movies. Yhaar Jasmin 01 joked, “Please first go and watch ‘Wrong Turn’—from there, you won’t be too curious about any abandoned buildings again.”

The abandoned mansion serves as a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of wealth and legacy. As the video continues to circulate online, it has reignited conversations about the late CEO’s contributions to Ghana’s health industry and the unresolved fate of his properties.

Jinapor Slams Mahama Govt Size

0

Former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament (MP) for Damango, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has raised concerns over the growing size of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, noting that it is misleading to only consider the number of cabinet ministers and deputies when evaluating government size.

He was responding to the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, during a debate on the President’s message on the State of the Nation.

The Education Minister had praised President John Dramani Mahama for setting a new benchmark in government efficiency by reducing the number of ministers in his second term.

Mr. Iddrisu argued that the size of the government should be capped to ensure fiscal responsibility and effective governance, noting that under the Fourth Republic, Ghana has seen fluctuating numbers of ministers, with past administrations having up to 110 ministers, followed by 93 and 88.

He noted that President Mahama’s government, in a significant move, governed with only 60 ministers – the smallest size of government ever in the Fourth Republic.

However, in a sharp rebuttal, the NPP MP for Damango said the true scale of the current government and its impact on national resources requires a more comprehensive evaluation, stressing the need to account for both ministers and the often-overlooked presidential staffers when measuring the scope of the administration.

Mr. Jinapor emphasised the significant number of presidential advisers and staffers, which he believes should be factored into any analysis of government size.

The MP pointed out that the Chief of Staff and senior presidential advisers, along with various presidential staff, rank just below the Speaker of Parliament but above cabinet ministers in terms of their influence and responsibilities.

He noted that while cabinet ministers are subjected to parliamentary vetting and scrutiny, presidential advisers and staffers are not, making their appointment less transparent.

“In evaluating government size, we should not just focus on ministers and deputy ministers but also on the numerous senior presidential advisers and staffers appointed by the president,” Mr. Jinapor said.

“These positions, while not always in the public eye, have a significant impact on government operations, yet they remain outside the purview of parliamentary oversight,” he stressed.

The Damango MP argued that presidents can appoint hundreds of senior advisers, staffers, and specialists, which effectively increases the government’s machinery without requiring parliamentary approval.

He noted that this system, in which staffers are not held accountable to Parliament, creates a gap in transparency.

He indicated that the lack of scrutiny over presidential appointees and the financial burden these positions may place on the national budget.

He pointed out that, despite the numbers, the impact on national expenditure is not necessarily reduced by having a smaller group of ministers like 60, as the number of presidential advisers continues to rise.

Mr. Jinapor called for a more nuanced understanding of government size and urged a closer look at both cabinet ministers and the often-overlooked presidential staffers in any future evaluations of government efficiency and accountability.

Scaled-down Independence Day celebration doesn’t diminish significance

0

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the scaled-down 68th Independence Day celebration does not lessen the importance and significance of the occasion.

Addressing the nation at the 68th Independence Day Celebration at the Jubilee House, he emphasised that Ghana’s independence remains the most critical event in the nation’s history, as it set the country on the path to nationhood.

“This scaled-down celebration does not diminish the importance and significance of this occasion in any way. Ghana’s independence is the single most important event in our history as it sets us on the path of nationhood.

“It is even more significant because it lifts the flame of independence in sub-Saharan Africa by inspiring other countries yoked to colonial exploitation to seek independence and self-determination,” Mahama stated.

The decision to scale down the celebration was made in light of the current economic challenges facing the nation.

Despite the reduced scale, the event continues to hold great symbolic value, reminding Ghanaians of the sacrifices made by their forefathers and the enduring spirit of independence that continues to inspire the nation.

Let’s give peace a chance – Mahama to Bawku residents

0

President John Dramani Mahama, has called on residents of Bawku and its surrounding areas to embrace peace and renew friendships to end the ongoing conflict in the region.

His plea follows the recent surge in violence that has resulted in the deaths of about 56 people. The ongoing tensions have led to the imposition of a curfew in Bawku and its environs, with restricted movement between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Addressing the public during the 68th Independence Day celebration held at the Jubilee House on March 6, under the theme “Reflect, Review, and Reset,” Mahama urged the people of Bawku to prioritize peace for the sake of future generations.

“The people of Bawku and other areas, it is time for lasting peace to prevail. Our children deserve to inherit a peaceful land where their dreams are nurtured, not a place where their nightmares are relived. They deserve to inherit a land where our markets are bustling with trade, not tension and conflict. They deserve schools that echo with learning, not melancholy,” Mahama stated.

He further urged the residents not to be swayed by mistrust or the weight of past grievances, emphasizing the need to move forward together.

“Let us give renewal and friendship a chance. Let us give peace a chance. This is not an invitation to simply forget the past far from it. It is an invitation to live above it,” he added.

Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, has lauded Gifty Oware-Mensah, former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), for returning to the country to face law enforcement agencies over allegations levelled against her in connection with the NSS ghost names saga.

He condemned the assertion by a section of the public that she should have been arrested at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) terminal on arrival on March 4, 2025.

In his estimation, an arrest would be utterly unnecessary since she has availed herself for questioning, following calls for investigations regarding the ghost names saga during her tenure in office.

“A number of allegations have been levelled against her. She voluntarily come back to the country. Why would you arrest her at the terminal?

“She has not been found guilty in any court or even been charged. So, at this stage I expect that you respect her full rights,” Pratt said on Metro TV on March 5, 2025.

He indicated that if there were any pieces of evidence or questions against her, she should be respectfully invited for questioning.

“In fact, the reports from various media outlets suggested that she had absconded from justice, but her return shows her confidence. She appears to be confident that nothing will be found against her. I think she should avail herself to law enforcement agencies for all the opportunities she can get to clear her name,” he said.

Recently, The Fourth Estate, a project of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) released a document that alleged that the government had uncovered a significant discrepancy in the National Service payroll, revealing 81,885 suspected ghost names.

This figure represents the difference between the actual number of active personnel and the payroll data submitted by the previous management of the National Service Authority (NSA).

I’m very unhappy with the work you have done

0

Kwame Agbodza recently visited the Tema-Aflao construction site and he could be heard telling BHM company that he’s unhappy with the work they have done there.

“In his Words”

“We can all agree that the project is terminated, you still have possession of the site and the scope of your project is that, in the middle of the existing carriage way, you are supposed to build interchanges. So you actually disturbed an existing alignment that was perfectly fine. You necessarily had to do that but you left the adjacent spaces around what you did in some places in a very terrible

state. Indeed you have gone ahead to remedy part of them which have failed. It beats my mind wether BHM is incapable of basically fixing this as a temporary measure. I will not lie to you, we don’t just like that, you can not say that a company of your reputation could not do this”.

“What kind of procurement process do you need to just fix this little things. For three weeks nothing has been done, how are we supposed to believe that it’s because you haven’t been paid, because if we go into your books now, you are still holding part of our money, you haven’t actually exhausted everything you spent. So I’m not going to mix words here, I’m very unhappy because I was

expecting you to make the work moderable but you haven’t. You gave us assurance that you will fix the road within a week or two and it’s 3 weeks now. So, tell us if you are going to do it or not, we are not broke beyond getting a Ghanaian company, just tell us if you will do it or not because our people are struggling”, Kwame Agbodza said.

TV3 Ghana shared the video on their official instagram page today being Wednesday the 5th day of March, 2025 and it stirred massive reactions from the general public. Click on the link below to watch the video.

Ghana’s aid dependency won’t end with mere rhetoric

0

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized that Ghana’s reliance on donor aid and external financial support cannot be overcome through rhetoric alone but requires decisive action.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House on March 6, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged the frequent discussions surrounding the country’s dependence on imports, donor aid, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailouts.

However, he warned that merely repeating these concerns without implementing concrete solutions risks making them a cliché, criticizing the contradiction of advocating for self-reliance while continuing to seek financial assistance.

“Discussions about our independence often highlight our reliance on imports, donor aid, and IMF bailout as signs of continued dependency. This reminder is repeated so often that, while undeniably real, it risks becoming a cliché.

“Yet the entire efficacy of this reminder lies not in just repeating it but in our willingness to take decisive action. Actions that will break the chain of dependency, not just the empty rhetoric of Africa that is beyond aid.

“Proclaiming self-reliance while marching straight but into the hands of the donor agencies, begging bowl in hand, is meaningless,” he stated.

To tackle this issue, Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration is committed to restoring economic stability by implementing policies focused on fiscal discipline and self-sufficiency.

“To break this cycle of spenders and restore our economy, my administration is formulating policies based on fiscal discipline and living within our means,” he stated.
