Over 60 MPs Declare Support For Bawumia

0

Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong

A group of over 60 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP), yesterday paid a courtesy call on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to declare their support for him as the race begins for the flagbearer position of the party.

Although Dr. Bawumia, who led the party in the 2024 presidential election, has not yet officially declared his intention to contest in the January 31, 2026 flagbearer primaries, many have encouraged him to do so, and it is becoming obvious he will heed that call.

The visit by the overwhelming number of MPs from the NPP further strengthens Dr. Bawumia’s position as the preferred candidate, as the NPP takes a step to regain the governance of the country by winning the 2028 election.

It is not clear what was said in the closed-door meeting, but sources close to the visit indicated the group of over 60 MPs led by Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, MP for Mampong, declared their support for Dr. Bawumia and encouraged the former Vice President to formally declare his intention to contest the race.

Some of the noticeable MPs who called on Dr. Bawumia included Sammi Awuku, Mohammed Amin Adam, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Mustapha Ussif and Habib Iddrisu.

Dr. Bawumia, addressing the press after the meeting, described the visit as a “very happy visit because it is a courtesy call to declare support for me, and I’m so happy in terms of the group that has declared support for me from Parliament.”

He said the over 60 out of the total 88 NPP MPs represent a very significant number of MPs who have declared their support for him.

“I just want to use this opportunity to thank all of them.  I believe that this is going to be very, very important because the Members of Parliament as you know, control the constituencies to a large extent and I’m very, very happy for exactly what they have done today,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia added that “it is a strong show of support and I thank them, and I thank God for the strong show of support and off we go. There is a lot of hard work to be done so that we can help the party and help the country.”

Flagbearer

The NPP is set to elect a flagbearer on January 31, 2026, as the party gears up for the 2028 presidential election.

This was disclosed after the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, addressing journalists after the meeting, said the party will hold its national delegates’ conference on July 19, 2025 ahead of its presidential primaries.

“The National Council today made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026, that is the date we shall hold our presidential primaries,” he said.

Mr. Frimpong further noted that the national delegates’ conference, which will take place at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), is expected to bring together polling station, constituency and regional executives of the party, as well as former appointees and ministers to amend some provisions of the NPP Constitution.

So far, four persons including Dr.  Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong and MP for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong have hinted their intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the party.

It is one of the road shows held across the continent, ahead of the fourth edition of Africa’s premier trade and investment event, Intra-African Trade Fair 2025 (IATF2025), scheduled to take place in Algiers, Algeria, from 4 – 10 September 2025.

Fitch Solutions revises Ghana’s GDP growth forecast from 4.2% to 4.9%

Fitch Solutions revises Ghana's GDP growth upwards from 4.2% to 4.9% Fitch Solutions revises Ghana’s GDP growth upwards from 4.2% to 4.9%

Fitch Solutions has revised Ghana’s real GDP growth forecast upwards from an initial 4.2% to 4.9%, citing stronger-than-expected performance in the first quarter of the year and improved macroeconomic fundamentals.

According to the UK-based research firm, the revision follows the release of data on Ghana’s economic outlook by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) on June 6, 2025.

The data showed Ghana’s real GDP growth accelerated from 3.6% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 5.3% in the first quarter of 2025, which is above Fitch’s previous expectation of 3.5% growth.

Fitch noted that the unexpected surge in Q1 growth was primarily driven by stronger agricultural output particularly in crop production and fishing as well as improved performance in the mining and quarrying sector.

“Despite persistent weakness in hydrocarbons, growth in the mining and quarrying industry was buoyed by rising momentum in gold production amid elevated global prices,” it stated.

It also highlighted an uptick in domestic trade as evidence of a gradual rebound in consumer spending, signaling growing economic activity across key sectors.

Looking ahead, Fitch projects that consumer spending will remain the key driver of economic growth for the rest of the year, supported by a significantly stronger Ghanaian cedi, easing inflationary pressures.

“The appreciation of the cedi by about 50% against the US dollar between April and May has positioned it as the world’s best-performing currency so far in 2025. This is as a result of rising gold prices, increased investor confidence, and improved foreign reserves,” Fitch noted.

The upward revision signals growing confidence in Ghana’s economic recovery, driven by commodity windfalls, macroeconomic stability, and improved fiscal and external sector indicators.

Ghanaian dancehall musician, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has reacted to the arrest of business mogul, Kofi Boat, by the FBI over an alleged million-dollar fraud scheme.

Reports from multiple media platforms on June 18, 2025, indicated that Kofi Boat, together with another man identified as Agony and a third accomplice, had been arrested by the FBI in connection with a $100 million fraud scheme.

In a live session on Facebook on June 19, 2025, the popular dancehall sensation responded to the allegations leveled against the embattled Kofi Boat.

He argued that Kofi Boat who is his “godfather” is not a fraudster as widely speculated.

The visibly emotional Shatta Wale during the live video session was seen shedding tears as he vehemently defended Kofi Boat; debunking the allegations.

According to him, Kofi Boat has been linked to the fraudulent activity due to a business gone bad.

He called on God for His divine intervention to vindicate Kofi Boat.

“God, if you are there, make people know that Kofi Boat is not a scammer. Herh! Kofi Boat. Mama Joyce, I make sorry. I feel bad charlie. Sake of Kofi, I no dey sleep,” he lamented in pidgin.

Shatta Wale further extended his sympathy to Kofi Boat’s wife and his children.

“I dey picture Kofi Boat in kiddies and I no dey fit. Who told you Kofi Boat is a scammer? It is just a business that went wrong. What do you mean? Do you mean that (sic)Kofi Boat will sit behind a computer and browse?

“But that is how the world is. If you don’t take (sic) care, you can do one wrong business; that is why I am careful. That is why I don’t make friends anymore,” he added.

HPV vaccine highly effective in preventing cervical cancer

0

Dr Julian Nii Ardey Ansah, a general medical practitioner Dr Julian Nii Ardey Ansah, a general medical practitioner

A general medical practitioner, Dr Julian Nii Ardey Ansah, has highlighted the benefits of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine in the prevention of various types of cancers and genital warts.

According to Dr Ansah, the HPV vaccine protects against infections caused by the types of HPV responsible for more than 90 percent of cervical cancers, as well as most cases of anal, vulvar, vaginal, penile, oropharyngeal (throat) cancers, as it prevents about 90 percent of genital warts.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb on June 20, 2025, the medical expert described the vaccine as ‘highly effective’ and urged the public to prioritise early vaccination.

“The earlier we vaccinate, the better the chances of preventing these life-threatening diseases. Parents, schools, and health authorities must work together to ensure young people are protected at the right time,” he emphasised.

He explained that the vaccine provides nearly 100 percent protection against cervical pre-cancers linked to HPV types 16 and 18 when administered before exposure.

“This is why it’s most effective when given to young people before they become sexually active,” he stated.

Dr Ansah also assured the public that the HPV vaccine is generally safe.

He listed common side effects as; pain, redness, or swelling at the injection area, as well as mild fever, headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, or fainting particularly among adolescents, stating that rare side effects may include allergic reactions or syncope (fainting).

However, he noted that the vaccine is not recommended during pregnancy and advised women to wait until after childbirth before receiving it.

On the recommended age for vaccination, Dr Ansah said the ideal time for boys and girls to receive the vaccine is between the ages of 9 and 14, using a two-dose schedule at 0 and 6–12 months.

The recommended dose for children aged 15 to 26, is a three-dose catch-up schedule which can advisedly be administered at 0, 1–2, and 6 months.

Adults aged 27 to 45 may also be vaccinated following consultation with a healthcare provider, although the benefit is considered less effective due to possible prior exposure to HPV.

Dr Ansah concluded by encouraging parents and guardians to take proactive steps in safeguarding their children’s health by ensuring timely vaccination.

American tennis star, Coco Gauff, was stunned on her return to action on Thursday, June 19, 2025, losing to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu 6-3, 6-3 at the Berlin Open.

According to MSN on June 19, 2025, the second-ranked Gauff, who won at Roland-Garros less than two weeks ago for her second Grand Slam title, amassed 25 unforced errors and seven double faults in her loss to Wang.

Gauff had a bye to the second round at the grass-court tournament, a warmup for Wimbledon.

“It was a tough one today but happy to be back on court,” Gauff wrote on her social media accounts.

“Tried my best to adjust with the quick turnaround but it wasn’t enough. As always, I’m learning as I go. So, I hope to do better next time.”

Gauff is now preparing for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30, 2025.

“Excited to get some more practices in to be ready for Wimbledon,” she added.

Wang who ranked No. 49, said she would have been pleased just with the first set on Thursday, June 19, 2025, considering the level of her opponent.

“After I won the first set, I just told myself ‘OK, let’s take a minute and enjoy this. I’m playing the French Open champion, and I won the first set,'” she said in her on-court interview.

“No matter how the second and third go, I was like, ‘OK, let’s just enjoy it for a second.'”

Wang, who will face Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals, added, “I’m really happy with how I played today. I was serving well and putting a lot of pressure on the return, especially second-serve return.”

Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka finished off Rebeka Masarova 6-2, 7-6 (6) in a match that was suspended Wednesday, June 18, 2025, after one set due to a slippery court.

Sabalenka had lost to Gauff at the French Open final and later apologised to the American for making “unprofessional” comments after the Paris title match.

US basketball training for Senegal cancelled after visas rejected

0

Senegal are gearing up for the AfroBasket tournament in July Senegal are gearing up for the AfroBasket tournament in July

Training sessions for the Senegalese women’s basketball team in the US have been scrapped, with the West African nation’s prime minister saying he cancelled them because some of the squad were denied US visas.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said the team would now train in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, “in a sovereign and conducive setting”.

It comes amid reports that the US plans to impose fresh travel restrictions on 25 more African countries, including Senegal.

Earlier this month the US announced a ban on citizens from 12 countries, including seven from Africa. There were also partial travel restrictions on nationals from a further seven countries, with three from Africa.

It remains unclear why the Senegalese athletes were denied visas, as the US Embassy is yet to publicly comment on the matter.

“Informed of the refusal of issuing visas to several members of the Senegal women’s national basketball team, I have instructed the Ministry of Sports to simply cancel the ten-day preparatory training initially planned in the United States of America,” Sonko said on Thursday in a statement shared to social media.

Reports say five Senegalese basketball players and 13 team officials were travelling to meet other members of the squad and their coach who were already in the US, to warm up for the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Ivory Coast next month.

But their visa applications were not approved.

Senegal has one of the best women’s basketball teams in Africa – consistently reaching the final four in AfroBasket tournaments and boasting players from top leagues in the US, Europe and Egypt.

The visa refusals are raising eyebrows because, according to the recently leaked diplomatic cable containing details of the extended travel restrictions, targeted countries were given up to 60 days to address the concerns raised by the US.

These reportedly include people overstaying their visas, lack of co-operation with deportations, links to terror attacks in the US, antisemitism or what it termed “anti-American” activity.

Following the reported new travel restrictions, Senegal’s foreign ministry urged nationals to comply with their permitted periods of stay in the US.

Although it did not directly comment on Senegal’s possible inclusion in the latest list of restricted countries, the government statement underscored that diplomatic and consular services were working in close collaboration with the US administration.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yussuf Tuggar said the expanded travel bans could impede possible energy and rare earth mineral deals which West African countries can offer the US.

The Trump administration insists national security concerns and the high rate of visa overstays from some countries must be addressed.

Actress, Fella Makafui, has revealed that she was removed from the final season of the hit Ghanaian TV show YOLO.

In an interview with Pulse Ghana, Fella shared how she got the role of Serwaa and why she didn’t want to play it at first. She said she had gone to the audition hoping to play a different character, Emily, but was later told she would be playing Serwaa, a bread seller.

“I didn’t like it at all. I had spent years helping my mum sell bread, so I didn’t want to act like that again,” she said. “The first scene had to be reshot because I frowned throughout.”

After leaving the show, Fella focused on her business life. She started her fashion brand, Fella Clothing, and later opened a wine and liquor business. However, she admitted that the drinks business wasn’t for her.

‘Unresolved Ablekuma North Parliamentary Election Results Issue With AG’

0

Nana Akua Afriyie and Ewurabena Aubynn

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, has disclosed that the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Task Force have referred the unresolved collation of parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North Constituency to the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice for legal advice.

Answering questions in Parliament yesterday, Dr. Asare detailed the extensive efforts the EC has made to conclude the collation process since the December 7, 2024 elections.

According to him, the EC remains committed to ensuring that the people of Ablekuma North have a duly elected representative in Parliament.

He noted that the Accra High Court on January 4, 2025, ordered the EC to complete the collation of results in four constituencies such as Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South.

He said while the collation for the other three constituencies has been concluded, the process in Ablekuma North remains incomplete.

He indicated that the EC’s records indicate that collation efforts steadily progressed, with polling station results from both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) added at various stages.

However, challenges arose regarding the authentication of some of the submitted pink sheets, particularly those presented in scanned copies, the EC chief said.

Despite these issues, Dr. Asare emphasised that the collation process had been transparent, with agents of both the NDC and the NPP present throughout, as well as media coverage to ensure public accountability.

“The parties agreed to the use of scanned pink sheets when both admitted they no longer had the carbon copies. This was done with full participation of their agents,” he stressed.

He pointed out that the Commission made several formal requests to the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Task Force for security to complete the collation.

However, he said the police, citing security concerns and later a pending Supreme Court case, consistently advised against proceeding.

Dr. Bossman stated that on May 15, 2025, the EC wrote to the police to clarify that no legal injunction prevented the continuation of the collation.

According to him, nevertheless, the police responded that the matter had been referred to the Attorney General’s office and that they would await legal advice before providing the necessary security.

Since then, the EC has followed up but has yet to receive a definitive response from the Attorney General, he added.

Meanwhile, he said engagements with the NDC and NPP have continued, with the two parties holding divergent positions on the way forward, intimating that one party supports completing the collation, while the other proposes a re-run in the 37 polling stations that remain in dispute.

Dr. Asare appealed to Parliament to support the Commission in securing the cooperation of the Ghana Police Service to provide protection for the collation to be finalised.

“Our objective remains clear – to ensure that the people of Ablekuma North are rightfully represented in Parliament,” he stressed.

The EC maintained that the process had been open, fair, and backed by verifiable media coverage throughout its critical stages.

Medikal Under Fire For Touching Fan’s Butt

Medikal on stage with the fan

Rapper Medikal is catching heat online after a video showed him placing his hand over the buttocks of a female fan during a recent performance.

In the viral clip, Medikal is seen welcoming the fan onto the stage with a hug before placing his hand on her behind. The crowd cheered, but there were mixed reactions online.

While some say the fan didn’t seem to mind, others think Medikal went too far and acted inappropriately.

However, in response to the backlash, the “Omo Ada” hitmaker has firmly denied any intentional misconduct.

“I was performing at Evandy and invited one of my fans on stage. I wanted us to dance, but she told me she had a boyfriend, so I respected that and let her go. While hugging her, I accidentally touched her buttocks. It wasn’t intentional, people are reading too much into it,” Medikal explained.

He added that the online narrative is misleading and part of an agenda to damage his reputation.

“To those guys who sit around spreading fake news about me, stop it. I won’t intentionally invite someone on stage and disrespect her like that,” he said. “And to those calling it sexual harassment, stop that nonsense. I respect women, especially my fans. I don’t joke with my fans, so stop spreading the wrong narrative.”

Despite his explanation, the video continues to stir conversations about boundaries between artists and fans during live shows.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reassured Ghanaians that the government has not heard from the US in a formal manner about rumors that Ghana would be placed on a new list of countries that are prohibited from traveling to the US.

His remarks follow a June 14, 2025, statement by U.S. President Donald Trump that said his administration is thinking about limiting access to nationals of 36 other nations, including Ghana.

The Washington Post claims to have reviewed a U.S. State Department paper that indicates the action is being contemplated as a component of a larger immigration enforcement plan.

Ablakwa speaking in Parliament on Thursday June 19, 2025 emphasised that there is now “no cause for alarm” because Ghana has not received any official communication from U.S. officials.

“Ghana has not been officially notified that we are going to be placed on any prohibition list or on any ban where our citizens cannot travel to the U.S.,” he stated.

Additionally, the Minister revealed that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has consulted with pertinent U.S. officials to obtain explanation.

“I have asked that we be assured that those leaks do not carry merit. So far, I can tell the people of Ghana that there is no cause for alarm,” he assured.

Yaw Asante Agyekum, once known as the mechanic of Ghana’s infamous armed robber Ataa Ayi, is now receiving a second chance at life. Following his release from prison, Agyekum’s journey of reintegration into society has been met with overwhelming support and kindness from the public and influential figures.

One of the most impactful moments in his new chapter came after a heart-touching interview with renowned media personality Nana Aba Anamoah. In a recent video shared on her platform, Nana Aba was seen spending time with Agyekum at the luxurious El Padrino Lounge in Accra. Agyekum expressed profound gratitude for the love he has received, noting that the kindness of strangers and friends alike has reignited his hopes for a better future.

“I am very grateful for the support I have received since my release. It’s heartwarming to know that people are willing to help me turn my life around,” he said.

The support has been tangible and life-changing. A brand-new Suzuki Alto was donated to assist him with transportation, while a generous donor spent GH¢2,000 to refresh his wardrobe. Another benefactor, identified as Paul from Tema, contributed GH¢10,000 to help revive Agyekum’s mechanic shop—a vital step toward his financial independence.

Still, Agyekum’s heart goes out to others behind bars. He appealed to the government for a broader amnesty program to help reduce prison overcrowding and give more ex-convicts a shot at redemption.

With consistent backing, especially from Nana Aba Anamoah, Yaw Asante Agyekum stands as a beacon of hope, proving that change is always possible when society chooses compassion over condemnation.

Speaker Bagbin Responds to Disorder During Heated Parliamentary Session

0

According to GhanaWeb, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has responded to the disruption that occurred during the legislative session on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Tensions flared following a disagreement between members of the Minority and the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor.

The conflict arose after Ahiafor declined a request to present a statement concerning the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), which ultimately led to an early suspension of proceedings.

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Health Committee, had raised alarms about the strike’s impact on the country’s health sector.

Since the industrial action began on June 4, there have been widespread disruptions in medical services, with reports linking it to multiple fatalities.

Seeking urgent parliamentary intervention, Dr. Afriye requested that the House deliberate on the crisis.

However, the Deputy Speaker turned down the plea, citing that a motion for adjournment had already been made by the Majority Leader.

Dr. Afriye, who represents the Effiduase/Asokore constituency and is also a medical doctor, strongly objected to the Deputy Speaker’s stance.

He emphasized the severity of the issue and insisted it required immediate national attention.

The chamber quickly descended into chaos as Minority MPs rallied in support of Dr. Afriye, urging that he be granted the opportunity to speak.

In response, Ahiafor instructed the Parliamentary Marshal to escort Dr. Afriye out of the chamber.

This move intensified the standoff, as Minority legislators formed a protective circle around their colleague to prevent his removal.

Tsikata and Torkornoo reportedly engage in heated exchanges during committee hearing

0

Tsatsu Tsikata, a renowned legal luminary, reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, the suspended Chief Justice during committee hearing.

This is according to Paul Adom Otchere, the host of Good Evening Ghana.

A five-member committee established by President John Mahama commenced hearings on Thursday, 15th May, to probe three petitions filed against the Chief Justice.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was constituted in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

Its establishment followed a determination of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice and was undertaken in consultation with the Council of State.

In a post on the Facebook page of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom Otchere has claimed that the suspended Chief Justice and Tsatsu Tsikata were at each other’s throats during a hearing session by the Committee.

He disclosed that the husband of Gertrude Torkornoo was prevented from accompanying her wife to the inner room, triggering a heated exchange between the two of them.

“CJ and Tsatsu Tsikata reported to be at each other’s throats as CJ’s husband is prevented from accompanying his wife to the inner room,” he claimed.

CJ suspension

On April 22, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that President Mahama had suspended Justice Torkornoo.

The suspension follows petitions filed to the President by a group of unnamed citizens, alleging misconduct and breaches of judicial ethics by the Chief Justice. The petitioners are calling for her removal from office.

Sacking Postecoglou was emotionally difficult- Levy

0

Sacking coach Ange Postecoglou soon after he delivered Tottenham Hotspur’s first major trophy in 17 years was “emotionally difficult”, but the club needed a change after a poor Premier League season, chairman Daniel Levy said.

Postecoglou was dismissed earlier this month, just over two weeks after leading Tottenham to a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final, securing the club’s first silverware since 2008 and earning them a place in next season’s Champions League.

Levy noted that while the decision divided supporters, the Australian manager ultimately paid the price for a dreadful league campaign that saw his side finish 17th in the table their worst finish since they were relegated in the 1976-77 campaign.

“I don’t regret appointing Ange, I’m very grateful to Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in his second we were over the moon to win a trophy,” Levy said in an interview released by the club on yesterday.

“But we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt that we needed a change. Emotionally it was difficult but we feel that we’ve made the right decision for the club.

Tottenham last week named former Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their fifth full-time manager in six years and the 13th since Levy became chairman over 25 years ago.

“Failure is not an option, the desire is to succeed. And because it’s so difficult, I want to succeed even more,” Levy added.

“Whenever you have a new coach, it’s always a fresh start. There are always different ideas but we want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season.

“One of the things that stood out to me with Thomas was that he is clearly highly intelligent, a great communicator, super human being plus all the technical aspects which are obviously important.”-Reuters

Former Police Officer Who Resigned to Campaign for Mahama Confirmed as Akuapem North MCE

News Hub Creator2d

In a remarkable career shift from law enforcement to local governance, former Ghana Police Service detective, John Evans Ayerakwa Kumordzie, has been officially confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akuapem North.

Kumordzie’s political journey began in 2019 when he voluntarily resigned from the police force to actively support former President John Dramani Mahama in his political campaigns. This move, which many considered bold and unprecedented, signaled Kumordzie’s clear intention to participate fully in national politics.

His appointment is part of a broader effort by President Mahama to revitalize local leadership, with Kumordzie being among 33 MMDCEs confirmed in the Eastern Region. The Akuapem North Assembly approved his nomination with 32 votes in favor and 16 against, translating to an approval rate of 66.7%.

Though Kumordzie’s earlier forays into parliamentary politics were met with electoral defeats—first in Okere Constituency in 2020, where he lost to Dan Botwe, and again in Akuapem North in 2024 to Sammy Awuku of the NPP—he remained resilient and engaged in local political affairs. That persistent involvement has now earned him the trust to manage municipal governance.

His swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey Adjei, who administered the official oaths. In her address, she noted that “Kumordzie brings with him a disciplined background and deep understanding of public service, which we hope will translate into practical development for Akuapem North.”

Central banks in Africa must lead on Customer Service standards – Prof. Hinson urges

0

Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg, Professor Ebo Hinson, has called on central banks across Africa to develop a deeper understanding of customer experience (CX) in order to more effectively guide the financial institutions under their regulation.

Speaking during a session on “Enhancing Customer Service Experience in the Financial Services Sector” hosted on X Spaces, Prof. Hinson emphasized the need for central banks to take proactive steps in shaping customer service standards across both banking and non-banking financial institutions.

“Regulating CX temperature should be part of the mandate of any forward-looking central bank in Africa,” he said. “There are a multitude of customer experience issues where central banks can offer guidance, not necessarily legislation but strategic direction. CX best practices may not always fit a standard chart, but top-level influence can make a difference.”

Prof. Hinson also urged central banks to first model good customer experience within their own operations, then extend that understanding through clear, actionable guidance to the institutions they supervise.

“I’ve always dreamed of a time when you could walk into a bank and see a pop-up banner that simply says: Call this number. That’s the kind of simple, accessible experience we need to aim for,” he added.

The Management of the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has refuted reports that some unknown individuals attempted to set the Nkawkaw Fire Tender ablaze.

A statement signed by Assistant Chief Fire Officer I (ACFO I), Timothy Osafo-Affum, the Eastern Regional Commander, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the reports were false and misleading.

It said on Tuesday, June 11, 2025, at approximately 2116 hours, the Nkawkaw Station received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at Zaragoza Atta Ne Atta, involving a nine-bedroom self-contained house.

“The crew immediately responded to the incident. While en route and in close proximity to the scene, the fire tender got stuck in a muddy portion of the road, which was filled with charcoal,” the statement said.

“To drive the tender out of the mud, the heat from the engine and the exhaust ignited the charcoal beneath the tender, resulting in emission of smoke.”

“The smoke was initially misinterpreted as an attempt by unknown individuals gathered near the scene to set the fire engine ablaze.”

The statement said at no point in time did anyone attempt to set the fire tender ablaze.

“There was, therefore, no malicious intent,” it said.

It said the situation made it impossible for the crew to get to the scene, and as a result, an Mpraeso Fire Tender was quickly dispatched to respond to the incident.

The GNFS reassured the public that it remained committed to responding swiftly, professionally, and efficiently to all emergency calls.

As the transfer window unfolds, Kotoko fans will be monitoring developments closely, hoping to see fresh faces arrive to bolster their squad for domestic and continental competitions.

Appointments Committee to vet Justice Ackaah-Boafo today after petition delay

0

The Appointments Committee of Parliament will today, Friday, June 20, 2025, vet Supreme Court nominee Justice Kwaku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, following the lifting of a temporary suspension of the process.

The vetting was earlier halted after a petition was submitted by one Anthony Kwabenya Rau, who accused the nominee of misconduct during a court proceeding.

According to the petition, Justice Ackaah-Boafo allegedly insulted and disrespected Mr. Rau, calling him “arrogant” and “power drunk.” The judge, however, has firmly denied the allegations.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo is the final nominee in a group of seven justices from the Court of Appeal who were nominated by former President John Dramani Mahama for elevation to the Supreme Court.

Today’s vetting is expected to bring finality to the scrutiny of all seven nominees.

The Committee’s recommendations will be forwarded to the plenary for approval or rejection.

Talk about sex, body parts

Media personality and mother of four, Kokui Selormey Media personality and mother of four, Kokui Selormey

Media personality and mother of four, Kokui Selormey, has urged parents to stop avoiding uncomfortable conversations with their children—especially on topics such as sex, body awareness, and digital exposure—warning that silence can be more dangerous than discomfort.

Speaking at A Convergence of Mothers in Accra, Kokui made a strong case for open, age-appropriate discussions at home. She noted that children today live in an internet-driven world where information—accurate or not—is constantly at their fingertips.

“Children as young as five are already sexually aware,” she said. “We have to stop giving body parts nicknames or acting like certain topics are forbidden. If you’re not talking to your children, someone else is—whether it’s a friend, a stranger, or the internet.”

Kokui revealed that her parenting strategy involves frequent check-ins and guided conversations with each of her four children, aged between five and fourteen.

She encourages them to come to her first with anything they’ve seen or heard, so she can shape their understanding from a place of truth.

“I like to lead with, ‘So what do you know about this?’ They always surprise me. It can be shocking, but I’d rather they hear it from me first than pick up false or harmful information elsewhere.”

She added that the desire to protect children must also include accountability and honesty—even admitting when the child may be the problem.

“Let’s be honest: not every child is innocent. Sometimes your child could be the bad influence. If we’re unwilling to accept that possibility, we may be failing them.”

Kokui emphasized that parenting in today’s digital age requires patience, intentionality, and the courage to have what she called “man-in-the-mirror conversations”—confronting both the child’s behavior and the parent’s own blind spots.

“Being a parent today means guiding your child to survive the world as it is, not as we wish it were. That means honest talk, active listening, and being available—even for the uncomfortable stuff.”

The event, organized by media personality MzGee and themed “Yesterday’s Daughters, Today’s Mothers,” brought together mothers across generations to reflect on their parenting journeys. The forum featured open conversations and expert sessions on motherhood, parenting, mental health, legal responsibilities, and more—within Ghana’s evolving social context.

My child defied everything I knew, parenting is more than theory

0

Education consultant and lecturer Dr Jemima Nunoo Education consultant and lecturer Dr Jemima Nunoo

Education consultant and lecturer Dr. Jemima Nunoo has admitted that, despite her years of academic training and experience in child development, raising her own daughter has turned many of her theories upside down.

Speaking at A Convergence of Mothers—a parenting and mentorship forum held in Accra and organized by media personality MzGee—Dr. Nunoo revealed how becoming a mother forced her to confront the gap between classroom theory and real-life parenting.

“I have a two-year-old running around my house now—and everything I knew about child education went out the window,” she confessed. “I planned, I prayed, I read books. I took all the vitamins and prepared like I was writing an exam. But she came and defied everything. And she still does.”

Her remarks struck a chord with many parents in attendance, especially those struggling to balance professional knowledge with the practical realities of everyday life.

Dr. Nunoo used her experience to emphasize that today’s approach to education must go beyond academics.

She described modern learning as holistic, highlighting the influence of home life, emotional well-being, social development, and even a parent’s personal habits on a child’s growth.

“If I love to dance at home and play music, my child picks that up. She dances too. That’s a learning environment,” she explained.

“It’s not just about books and grades anymore. It’s emotional, it’s social—it’s everything.”

She shared how including her daughter in everyday routines and even professional spaces has helped shape her development. From nursery exposure to quietly sitting in lecture halls, Dr. Nunoo believes children benefit greatly from simply being present.

“At one point, I used to attend board meetings with her. When it was time to breastfeed, I’d go downstairs, feed her, and come back up. That was my world, and I brought her into it. And it worked.”

She urged parents not to feel guilty or judged for involving their children in their routines.

“If it’s safe and feasible, let them tag along. They’re watching, learning, mimicking.”

Dr. Nunoo also addressed the growing role of technology in child development, calling for intentional regulation of screen time.

“We can’t eliminate it entirely, but we can control it. Let’s substitute screen time with simple, engaging activities like coloured rice, pegs in bowls, supermarket visits—anything.”

She concluded with a call to restore community-based child interaction, noting how supervised outdoor play and casual neighbourhood friendships can do wonders for a child’s social growth.

“My daughter now knows kids in our area just from little visits to the shop. She jumps in the rain, sings out loud. That joy, that learning, is something no screen can teach.”

Dr. Nunoo’s reflections formed part of a broader conversation under the theme “Yesterday’s Daughters, Today’s Mothers”, which brought together women from diverse backgrounds to reflect on the challenges and joys of raising children in modern Ghana.

Why Supreme Court judge nominee was described as a ‘political prostitute’

0

The Appointments Committee has confirmed that the vetting of the judge will proceed as planned The Appointments Committee has confirmed that the vetting of the judge will proceed as planned

A controversial petition describing Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku T Ackaah-Boafo as a “political prostitute” has been thrown out by Parliament, clearing the way for his vetting to proceed before the Appointments Committee on Friday, June 20,2025.

The petition, submitted by Anthony Kwabenya Rau, who identifies as an international human rights activist, accused the Court of Appeal judge of judicial bias, misconduct, and political opportunism.

In his allegations, Rau claimed Justice Ackaah-Boafo was politically compromised, stating, “I see the above said person as a political prostitute judge. After serving me the judgement in November 2019, he was immediately appointed by the NPP government to the Court of Appeal. After giving judgement on Hon. Ato Forson, he is now being promoted by the NDC to the Supreme Court.”

The vetting process, was initially halted after Rau submitted his petition at the eleventh hour, forcing Parliament’s Appointments Committee to pause and refer the complaint to Speaker Alban Bagbin.

However, after review, Parliament found no sufficient grounds to pursue the claims and dismissed the petition as lacking merit.

Among the numerous allegations, Rau accused Justice Ackaah-Boafo of using insulting and inappropriate language during proceedings at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) court.

He claimed the judge belittled him by referring to him as a “so-called ‘Messiah’ international human rights activist” and questioned his authority to represent clients in Ghana.

He further alleged the judge’s written judgement contained personal attacks and described Ackaah-Boafo as “arrogant, biased, power-drunk, an abuser of human rights, and supportive of corruption.”

Rau also questioned the nominee’s cultural alignment, citing his Canadian background and claiming he disrespected Ghanaian traditions, especially regarding age and seniority.

In addition, the petition attempted to link Justice Ackaah-Boafo’s career progression to political favoritism, suggesting that his judicial decisions were rewarded by both the NPP and NDC governments.

Despite the weighty tone of the petition, parliamentary sources close to the vetting process dismissed the claims as unfounded.

The Appointments Committee has confirmed that the vetting will proceed as planned.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo, who has served in various capacities including on the High Court and Court of Appeal benches, is the final nominee put forward by President John Dramani Mahama to be considered for the Supreme Court.

Didi Dramani in line for Hearts of Oak coaching job

0

Former Asante Kotoko coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani Former Asante Kotoko coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani

Former Asante Kotoko coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani is reportedly in line for the Hearts of Oak coaching job.

The experienced coach is said to have held preliminary talks with the Accra-based club already, with sources indicating that he wants to work with Abdul Gazalle and Fiifi Parker as his assistants if he accepts the role.

While talks remain at an early stage, Hearts of Oak are hoping that an agreement will be reached in the coming weeks, particularly after talks with coach Maxwell Konadu broke down.

The Phobians enjoyed a fairly good campaign during the 2024/25 Ghanaian football season.

Despite missing out on a trophy, the team’s top four finish in the Ghana Premier League was an improvement from the previous campaign, where the team almost suffered relegation.

After the improvement, Hearts of Oak are now aiming to win the Ghana Premier League in the 2025/26 season.

As a result, the club is looking to strengthen its technical team in a move that is set to see current head coach Aboubakar Ouattara being elevated to the role of Technical Director.

Didi Dramani, when appointed, will replace Aboubakar Ouattara as Hearts of Oak’s head coach.

Many fans are excited by the potential appointment of Didi Dramani and believe he can succeed in the role.

Ghana to expand artisanal fishing zone amid trawler violations

0

Ghana has announced plans to expand the area in which small-scale fishers can operate, in response to persistent violations by industrial trawlers encroaching into this zone.

The country’s inshore exclusion zone, or IEZ, will now extend 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) from shore, up from 6 nmi (11 km) currently. Emelia Arthur, Ghana’s newly appointed fisheries minister, made the announcement at the U.N. Ocean Conference in Nice, France, last week.

Small-scale or artisanal fishing is a significant part of Ghana’s economy, employing more than 200,000 people and operating some 12,000 canoes, and the IEZ is legally reserved for small-scale fisheries. However, industrial trawlers have increasingly violated this zone, often using destructive methods such as bottom trawling. These activities have severely depleted fish stocks and damaged artisanal fishing gear.

The decision to expand the IEZ aims to safeguard the livelihoods of artisanal fishing communities, said Arthur, who also announced more rigorous enforcement against encroaching vessels and those practicing illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The new rule will need parliamentary approval, but Arthur said legal reforms are underway. We are then going to enforce that regulation so severely that semi-industrial vessels and industrial vessels are not going to be permitted to operate in this zone,” she said.

We have a big issue with IUU,” Isaac Okyere, a researcher from the University of Cape Coast, told Mongabay by phone. There are instances where the vessels have two different gears: one is licensed and one is not licensed — with that they catch pelagic fish. It is a booming business.”

Okyere said the average annual catch by artisanal fishers in Ghana is 20-25 metric tons, but a study estimated that in 2017, illegal catches of juvenile pelagic fish exceeded 100,000 metric tons. Much of this is believed to have been illegally transshipped in a practice locally known as saiko, where industrial trawlers transfer fish to canoes at sea, which then gets sold unrecorded at local markets.

In March, the Ghanaian government suspended the licenses of four Chinese trawlers for violations, including transshipment and catching of juvenile fish.

Despite laws prohibiting foreign ownership of industrial trawlers, the Environmental Justice Foundation found that around 90% of Ghana’s trawl fleet is Chinese-owned, operating through Ghanaian front companies. These vessels often violate rules restricting them to fishing demersal or bottom-dwelling species outside the IEZ.

The proposed IEZ expansion is expected to be included in the revised Fisheries Act, currently under review.

Okyere told Mongabay that once passed, “this law must be rigorously enforced to prevent further encroachment.”

Ghana’s Fisheries Commission has in recent years denied license renewals for several industrial trawlers due to noncompliance. The fisheries ministry has also initiated gear reform, and issued a moratorium on the entry of new boats into the overloaded canoe fishery.

The fisheries ministry hadn’t responded to Mongabay’s questions by the time of publication.

‘It doesn’t make sense or add up’

Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku

The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has raised objections to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026.

Representing the campaign interests of Bryan Acheampong, the MP has criticized the timeline as premature and disconnected from ongoing internal reforms.

Speaking in an interview on Citi News June 19, 2025, Davis Opoku, popularly known as OPK, questioned the rationale behind setting a date for the party’s flagbearer elections before critical decisions affecting the grassroots structure of the party are finalized.

“The date that has been set, January 31st, 2026, it doesn’t really add up, it doesn’t make sense,” he said.

According to him, the party is yet to adopt new proposals expected to be deliberated at the NPP’s upcoming Annual Delegates Conference in July 2025.

These include structural adjustments to the number of polling station executives increasing from five to seven which, if passed, will require elections across all polling stations to reconstitute the party’s local leadership.

“How do you put into motion a presidential campaign when the party’s base is about to change?” Are they to campaign to the existing five executives or the incoming seven?”

The Mpraeso MP said the Bryan Acheampong campaign intends to formally petition the party’s leadership to “hasten slowly,” insisting that the party must prioritize building a solid internal structure before embarking on presidential primaries.

“We’re not just electing a political leader. We want to build a strong party that can carry any presidential candidate to victory,” Opoku emphasised.

He further warned that rushing through the process could compromise fairness and transparency, especially after the NPP’s heavy defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“This level of scheming hasn’t helped the NPP. The grassroots are tired they want to see a stronger party, not glorification of individuals,” he stated.

Opoku also lamented what he described as the lack of a level playing field, noting that aspiring presidential candidates make huge sacrifices both physically and financially and deserve fair treatment.

“The least the party can do is to provide a fair process. This rush, ahead of a national conference that could reshape the constitution of our party, is wrong,” he said.

0

The much-anticipated AgriFair by Channel One TV opens today at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra.

Running from Friday, June 20 to Sunday, June 22, the AgriFair brings together farmers from across the country, agritech innovators, agro-processors, input suppliers, development agencies and everyday consumers.

It opens from 10am to 5pm each day.

In addition  the AgriFair features an “Agric Clinic”for expert consultations, tailored agribusiness advice, and technical support.

This aims to help farmers and entrepreneurs enhance productivity, scale operations and adopt sustainable practices.

Speaking on the importance of the AgriFair, General Manager of Citi FM and Channel One TV, Bernard Avle said it is also to support food security, innovation and regional agricultural competitiveness

It is going to be a diverse range of fresh, affordable farm produce, live demonstrations by agritech companies and agro-processors, strategic networking and business matchmaking, conversations on food systems and agribusiness policy and above all, a family-friendly atmosphere celebrating Ghanaian culture and culinary heritage.

The fair is expected to bridge the gap between producers and consumers and boost visibility for local agribusinesses

Already, the response from farmers and exhibitors has been enthusiastic, with dozens of vendors preparing to meet consumer demand and forge partnerships across the value chain.

Strong financial and monetary policies have boosted Ghana’s foreign reserves – Prof. Patrick Asuming

0

Prof. Patrick Asuming

Ghana’s recent improvement in foreign reserves has been driven by strong financial and monetary policy discipline, not necessarily a broad-based recovery in the real economy.

That’s the key message from economist and University of Ghana professor, Patrick Asuming, on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, June 19.

“The financial and the monetary side of the economy have performed better,” Prof Aning declared, emphasising that government’s aggressive moves to stabilise finances were yielding visible results.

“Government has been very quick to try and put its finances in order, and that has reflected in the Treasury Bills rates.”

He noted that Ghana’s reserve position has benefited from a combination of deliberate policy choices and fortunate global trends.

“A combination of policy direction in terms of our reserve position, as well as some luck in terms of what has happened with global prices of some of our export items, we have done well,” he explained.

“That has boosted our foreign reserve position.”

Prof Aning pointed out that the decision to “cash in” on those reserves at the right time also helped improve headline macroeconomic indicators.

However, he warned that the improvements, while real on paper, don’t tell the full story.

“If you look at how the economy ended in 2024, our macroeconomic indicators are looking way much better than where we were before,” he said.

“But we still have to understand that even though the first quarter GDP performed [above] expectation, there are still lingering weaknesses.”

Breaking down the GDP numbers, he revealed that out of Ghana’s 20 economic subsectors, five actually declined.

“But the weightier subsectors grew strongly, so it made up for the decline,” he explained.

“That’s why we are beginning to see stronger growth numbers. But there is a disconnect between the numbers and how people are feeling in their pockets.”

Prof Aning also offered a reality check on inflation and prices, especially with regard to recent Producer Price Index (PPI) numbers.

“We have moved from around 18 to around 10,” he said. “But prices are still rising. They haven’t declined. There is a rate of price increase that has reduced. We have to be clear about that.”

He cautioned that the strengthening cedi alone doesn’t mean prices will fall.

“The currency has gained and strengthened, but look at the other components that go into production. Tariffs keep going up, wages are not coming down, and domestic cost of production is rising,” he explained.

The former economist urged policymakers and the public not to mistake macroeconomic stabilisation for a full recovery. “The real side of the economy seems to be lagging behind,” he stressed.

“That tends to give you a disconnect between how people are perceiving the economy and what the macro numbers are showing.”

While acknowledging progress on the financial front, Prof Aning warned that economic management must now focus on ensuring the real economy catches up.

Until then, he said, ordinary Ghanaians may continue to feel little relief—even as the country’s reserves and credit ratings improve.

What Supreme Court judge nominee Justice Ackaah-Boafo told Abebrese Rau in the DVLA case

Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku T Ackaah-Boafo Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku T Ackaah-Boafo

As the vetting of Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku T Ackaah-Boafo resumes on June 20, 2025, new details have emerged from a past court judgment in which the judge criticised his now-petitioner, Anthony Kwabenya Rau, over what he described as a “fictional and selfish narrative” presented under the guise of activism.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo, in a 2019 High Court ruling, took issue with a three-page protest letter submitted by Rau, then a director of a company involved in the vehicle license plate embossment business.

The letter, which was presented as evidence in court, accused other companies in the sector of widespread corruption, incompetence, and even criminal conduct, while portraying Rau’s firm as the sole ethical player.

The judge was unconvinced. In his written judgment, he noted that Rau’s claims were made without a “scintilla of proof” and that his sweeping accusations unjustly discredited an entire industry the plaintiff had only recently joined then.

“To my mind, the Plaintiff’s director who claims to be a German human rights activist engaged in a fictional and selfish narrative for his own gain and benefit by claiming to be the ‘Messiah’ of Ghanaian drivers,” Justice Ackaah-Boafo wrote.

He further criticized Rau’s attempts to leverage sensationalism to secure contracts under the pretense of foreign expertise and altruism, “The public space and the court are not forums for self-serving sensationalism and aggrandizement. Therefore, Mr. Abebrese Rau and his like should spare Ghanaians such self-glorified epistles.”

Despite these remarks, Justice Ackaah-Boafo ruled in favour of the plaintiff on the substantive issues and awarded him a nominal cost of GH¢5,000.

Fast forward to 2025, Rau resurfaced as the author of a petition to Parliament’s Appointments Committee, accusing Justice Ackaah-Boafo of judicial bias, misconduct, and inappropriate courtroom conduct during that very case.

The petition had temporarily delayed the judge’s Supreme Court vetting, with claims that he insulted Rau and questioned his legitimacy as a human rights advocate.

Rau described the nominee as “arrogant, biased, power-drunk, and an abuser of human rights,” and alleged political bias by claiming that Justice Ackaah-Boafo had been promoted after ruling in favour of both NPP and NDC-aligned individuals.

In an especially provocative statement, he referred to the judge as a “political prostitute.”

However, after reviewing the allegations, Parliament has dismissed the petition for lacking merit.

The Speaker of Parliament and the Appointments Committee concluded that the accusations did not meet the required threshold for investigation, paving the way for the nominee’s vetting to proceed as scheduled.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo, who currently serves on the Court of Appeal, is the final nominee of President John Dramani Mahama to be considered for a seat on Ghana’s Supreme Court.

Reduction of passport price awaits Parliamentary approval – MP

Patrick Yaw Boamah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central Patrick Yaw Boamah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central

Patrick Yaw Boamah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central, says, reduction of passport fees, will not be feasible without Parliamentary approval.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, had earlier told Parliament of the government’s intention to reduce passport prices.

The government pledged to reduce passport prices from GH¢500 to GH¢350, but the reduction is yet to be implemented.

However, addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps on Wednesday, in Parliament House, Mr Boamah said: “The minister had previously indicated that passport prices will be reduced, but it has become clear that he did not have the authority to unilaterally make such a decision.”

“The minister does not have the power to unilaterally reduce passport prices without legislative approval. “The finance minister will determine whether passport prices can be reduced based on revenue projections,” he added.

According to the MP, the finance minister was expected to return to Parliament in August with the proposed legislation and until that, the intended reduction could not happen.

“I said the other time that the Minister did not have the authorization to unilaterally reduce passport prices. From the answers he gave today, it confirms that passport prices have not been reduced.

“It still remains a pledge of the government, not an implemented policy. We must make it clear to the Ghanaian public not to be carried away,” he said.

He noted that Ghanaians were patiently waiting, and it was the hope to see whether the Minister will follow through by August.

Ghana Premier League giants Hearts of Oak have formally initiated talks with Techiman Eleven Wonders for their attacking right-back Farouk Ameyaw.

The Phobians are seeking to bolster their defensive options with the signing of the Division One League’s highest-scoring defender, who netted an impressive seven goals last season.

Ameyaw’s unique goalscoring threat from full-back has made him one of the most coveted players in the lower tier.

However, negotiations remain in early stages with newly-promoted Eleven Wonders yet to give the green light for the transfer. The Techiman-based club are reportedly weighing their options as they prepare for their Ghana Premier League return.

Hearts’ technical team views t player as an ideal modern full-back who can contribute both defensively and offensively.

His potential acquisition would address their need for more attacking thrust from wide areas.

With the transfer window ongoing, this developing story could gain momentum in coming days as both clubs assess their positions.

Prof. Kanton proposes realignment of agricultural research institutions from MESTI to Agric Ministry

0

Agricultural Research Scientist, Professor Roger Kanton is proposing a major structural reform that will place all agricultural research institutions under the direct oversight of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).

He argues that the existing arrangement which puts these institutions under the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) is not only a disconnect that stifles the agricultural advancement of the country but one that is also counterproductive to Ghana’s quest for agricultural transformation.

He was speaking at the Agric Forum organised by Citi FM and Channel One TV on Thursday June 19, 2025 at Alisa Hotel as part of the 2025 Citi Business Festival.

“I know the research institutions like CSIR are under MESTI. Throughout my working career, I have always challenged this. You have Food and Crops Research, SARI and others funded by the Agric Ministry. These are typically agrarian institutions but they sit with MESTI. So if they are under MESTI, their focus will not be on Agric.”

Prof. Kanton was worried about the overlapping roles and competing loyalties, noting that while MESTI priorities broader environmental and scientific direction, agricultural research institutions often lack the direct policy guidance and alignment needed to drive food production and innovation.

“MESTI goes to EPA, gold mines and others to make a lot of money. We are with Agric and the MESTI Minister also sits there. So our loyalty is not with the Agric Ministry but MESTI. Our products and services do not align to these. I question that and we really need to return”, the Research Scientist added.

Vegetable Crop Research Institute

Ghana’s overreliance on imported vegetables was also a key concern raised by Prof. Kanton.

He revealed that the country spends an estimated US$2 million weekly on tomato imports and a staggering US$400 million annually on onions – figures he described as economically unsustainable.

To reverse this trend and promote food self-sufficiency, he suggested the establishment of a dedicated Vegetable Crops Research Institute.

“We need targeted research on vegetables like tomatoes, onions, pepper, okra, carrots, cabbage, lettuce and leafy greens. Such an institute will help reduce our dependence on imported canned and fresh vegetables, and also ensure local seed development.”

A vegetable-focused research hub according to the agricultural scientist would be critical to Ghana’s ambition of cutting down on imports, boosting domestic production and achieving long-term food security.

The Agric Forum was to explore agribusiness as a pillar of economic growth, while pushing for policy reforms, strategic investment and innovation in the sector.

It was on the theme: “Harnessing Agribusiness Potential for Economic Growth: Expanding Agricultural Frontiers and Maximising Productivity in Ghana.”

Albanian club KF Iliria have completed the signing of promising Ghanaian youngster Abdul Latif Yakubu from Marks Holmes Football Academy.

The young attacker becomes the latest African talent to join the Balkan club’s ambitious project.

Yakubu, who impressed during trials last month, has signed a multi-year deal with the Albanian second division side.

The pacy winger caught scouts’ attention with his explosive dribbling and eye for goal during academy tournaments in West Africa.

The Albanian club’s technical director praised Yakubu’s “raw potential and fearless attacking mentality,” suggesting he’ll be integrated into their first-team plans immediately.

For Marks Holmes Academy, this transfer validates their youth development program that has now exported a number of players to in the past.

GHANASoccernet.com understand several Scandinavian clubs had been monitoring Yakubu before Iliria moved decisively to secure the deal.

John Awuah says Ghana needs values, not a new Constitution

0

The Ghana Association of Banks CEO, John Awuah, has challenged the widely held view that constitutional reform is the key to solving Ghana’s developmental woes.

He insists instead that what the country truly needs is a transformation of values and enforcement of existing laws.

In a thought-provoking post on LinkedIn, Mr Awuah argued that Ghana’s real enemy is not the Constitution, but the entrenched culture of impunity, corruption, and weak law enforcement.

“While I do not oppose the ongoing work on Constitutional Review,” he wrote, “I am of the firm view that the Constitution is perhaps the least of the challenges confronting Ghana or our democracy.”

He pointed out that some nations without even a codified constitution have succeeded in building strong institutions and high-functioning democracies by relying on “laws, conventions, legal precedents, and traditions that have evolved.”

For him, the issue is not the document but what people choose to do with it.

“Our leaders who want to do good can do a lot of good with the constitution we have,” Mr Awuah said.

“The Constitution does not support corruption, yet we are corrupt. It has provisions for dealing with the dispensation of justice, yet we see a lot of injustice. It abhors crime, yet depending on who you are, you can be a walking criminal on our streets.”

With rising calls for constitutional amendments, the banking CEO urged Ghanaians not to fall into the trap of blaming the Constitution for systemic failures.

“We can have a Constitution that is written by God, and a bad leader will have clauses to pursue personal interest and misrule,” he stated bluntly.

What Ghana needs, he emphasised, is a fundamental reset in values.

“Values are guided and nurtured with the strict application of the laws we already have.”

He cited examples from developed countries where citizens are not inherently more virtuous, but behave appropriately because the system punishes wrongdoing consistently.

“They don’t enjoy paying rent or loans,” he said, “but the consequences of not doing so—like being blocked from the financial system—deter them. They fear corruption because their laws don’t respect personalities. The laws know only the law.”

According to John Awuah, impunity has become so normalised in Ghana that those who try to do the right thing are often mocked or vilified.

“We have the reverse law syndrome in Ghana. The wrong is now right, and the people in the wrong have more strength and power, especially if they have managed to amass wealth through that wrongdoing.”

He warned against scapegoating the Constitution for the country’s moral and institutional collapse.

“So don’t paint our Constitution black and make it the cause of our woes—we are our own demons. A lot of good can be done with a bad constitution, and a lot of bad can be done with a good constitution.”

In his final verdict, he listed Ghana’s top three problems as: “1) Corruption, 2) Corruption; 3) Corruption.”

I used to sell ‘iced water’ on my head – KMJ opens up about his hustle days

0

Media personality Kpekpo Maxwell Justice Media personality Kpekpo Maxwell Justice

Media personality Kpekpo Maxwell Justice, popularly known as KMJ, has opened up about his humble beginnings and the grit that shaped his journey to success.

In an interview on Joy Prime, monitored by MyNewsGh, the radio and television host recounted how he started from the streets, selling sachet water—locally known as “Opinyin Dipinyin”—to make ends meet.

“I’ve done this. I’ve sold pure water,” KMJ shared. “My mum had a big freezer, so I decided not to let it go to waste. I used to tie water in rubber bags, freeze them, and sell them on my head.”

Despite being teased and receiving curious stares from his peers, KMJ said he never felt ashamed.

“My schoolmates would see me selling it, but I didn’t have a problem with that.”

In a lighthearted moment, he revealed that one Sheila still has a video of him from those days—sewing while perched on a ceiling.

“Sheila was amazed… Actually, I think she still has a video of me sewing on the ceiling,” he said with a laugh.

KMJ credited his hardworking mindset to a childhood filled with determination and lessons in self-reliance.

“I grew up knowing very well that if I wanted to be anything, I needed to work for it.”

Although his father wasn’t always present, KMJ noted that those circumstances helped fuel his passion and hustle.

Temperatures pass 32C as first UK area enters heatwave

0

The UK has recorded its hottest day of the year with temperatures passing 32C, as part of the country entered a heatwave.

A temperature of 32.2 °C was recorded in Kew and Heathrow, London, higher than the previous record for 2025 of 29.4 °C in Suffolk on 13 June.

Suffolk became the first place in the UK to officially enter a heatwave on Thursday after temperatures passed 27C for the third day in a row.

Amber heat health alerts are in place across the whole of England until 09:00 BST on Monday, as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warned that increased pressures on health and social care services were likely.

The heat is expected to build towards a high of 33C on Saturday, with central and eastern England seeing the peak temperatures.

Parts of the country could experience “tropical nights” over the weekend, when temperatures remain above 20C, the Met Office said.

Wales saw its hottest day of the year so far on Thursday, with temperatures of 30.2 °C recorded in Trawsgoed and Cardiff. Northern Ireland also registered a new record for 2025 – 25.7 °C in Castlederg.

In Scotland, Glasgow Bishopton reached 24.4C °C – lower than its record for this year of 25.5 °C in May.

For a heatwave to be declared by the Met Office, a threshold temperature needs to be met for at least three consecutive days.

PA Media A man reclines in the shade on grass in front of a pavilion selling ice cream in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens.

The threshold varies from 25C across the north and west of the UK, to 28C in parts of England.

In Suffolk, where the threshold is 27C, a temperature of 29.3C was recorded in the village of Santon Downham on Thursday. This was the third day in a row the county’s threshold had been breached, resulting in a heatwave being declared.

In London, where the threshold is 28C, a heatwave could be declared on Friday, as the temperature has now passed that figure for two days in a row.

At Royal Ascot, which takes place in Berkshire, outside of London, race organisers confirmed dozens of attendees required medical assistance because of heat-related illness.

The alert system works in conjunction with the Met Office but has a focus on health risks using four levels of warning: green, yellow, amber and red.

An amber warning means the whole health service is likely to be affected by the hot weather.

Among examples given by UKHSA are difficulties managing medicines, the ability of the workforce to deliver services and internal temperatures in care settings exceeding the recommended thresholds.

The agency also refers to a possible rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 or over or with health conditions, as well as health risks to the wider population.

PA Media Wide angle shot of people enjoying the sunshine on Jubilee Beach in Southend
Coastal areas are likely to be busy over the weekend as temperatures continue to rise

The rising temperatures are down to an area of high pressure situated across the UK, which with a south-easterly wind, draws in hot weather from other parts of Western Europe.

Friday will again see temperatures widely in the mid to high twenties across the UK, with a few spots in South East England once again exceeding 30C.

Northern and western parts of the UK will see a slight fall in temperature on Saturday, with the risk of some showers or thunderstorms.

For central and eastern England, Saturday will be the peak in the heatwave with temperatures rising to between 30 and 33C, although the Met Office has suggested the peak could be as high as 34C.

Regional fire services have issued warnings about water safety amid the high temperatures.

Pam Oparaocha, assistant commissioner for prevention and protection at the London Fire Brigade, warned that strong currents, underwater hazards and cold water shock “can be deadly”.

“With warm weather and school holidays on the horizon, we want people, especially young people, to enjoy our waterways safely, and that starts with education,” she added.

“It’s important to know the risks and to familiarise yourself with lifesaving equipment like throwlines, which are available along many of London’s waterways.”

Daves Patch/Weather Watchers A landscape image of green fields against a blue sky. Bushes with two pink flowers can be seen in the foreground.

Other organisations have also provided advice over recent days.

British Heart Foundation (BHF) told those with heart conditions to take precautions as high temperatures can put extra strain on the heart.

Age UK encouraged people to check in on older relatives, friends and neighbours.

A change in wind direction to a westerly on Sunday is set to cause the heatwave to break and all parts will be a little cooler.

Although eastern areas won’t be as hot, temperatures will still be in the mid to high twenties.

PA Media Cyclists pause on the road, some wearing helmets, as the sun shines down.

Climate change is continuing to drive global temperatures upwards and make extreme weather events more likely.

Leading scientists on Thursday warned that there were as little as three years left to limit global warming to 1.5C – the target that had been set by the Paris agreement in 2015.

Nearly 200 countries agreed to try to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C above levels of the late 1800s, with the aim of avoiding some of the worst impacts of climate change.

Last year was the hottest year on record and the first above the threshold – though a single year does not constitute a breach of the agreement.

The Met Office said heatwaves were 30 times more likely to occur than before the industrial revolution – and were projected to become even more common, potentially occurring every other year by the 2050s as greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise.

Trump confirms further delay to TikTok ban or sale deadline

0

President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for TikTok’s sale in the US for a further 90 days.

The video-sharing app has faced questions over its future after the US passed a law last year requiring the app to be banned unless sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

Lawmakers said it posed a risk to national security – something TikTok denies.

Trump, who vowed to save TikTok during his presidential campaign, signed an executive order on Thursday which has delayed the date for enforcing the law for a third time.

In a statement, TikTok said it was “grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support” in keeping the app online for its 170m US users.

“We continue to work with Vice President Vance’s Office,” it added.

A deal for the sale of TikTok in the US by ByteDance must now be reached by 17 September, Trump said in a post on his platform Truth Social.

The further delay was an expected development in the long-running process of securing a buyer for TikTok.

It is thought the authorities in Beijing will need to approve any sale or part sale of the app by its parent company.

The law was prompted by fears in the US that TikTok or ByteDance could be forced to hand over data on US users by the Chinese government.

Trump said on Tuesday he expected there would be a further delay.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday that a further 90-day extension would “ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”

‘Flouting’ the law

Trump tried to force a sale of TikTok to an American buyer in 2020, during his first term in office.

But last year, he signalled he’d had a change of heart, saying the platform had helped him win the 2024 presidential election.

“I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok, because I won youth by 34 points,” Trump said in December, although most young voters backed the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

The law was supposed to take effect on 19 January, a day before Trump’s inauguration to a second term in office.

TikTok challenged its constitutionality in the courts. The Supreme Court upheld the law days before it was due to take effect.

Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Vice Chairman Mark Warner, a Democrat, criticized Trump’s decision.

“Once again, the Trump administration is flouting the law and ignoring its own national security findings about the risks posed by a PRC-controlled TikTok,” Warner said in a statement.

“An executive order can’t sidestep the law, but that’s exactly what the president is trying to do,” Warner added.
