The President of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, has disclosed that the club is no longer considering a move to sign Spain forward of Ghanaian descent Nico Williams.

According to him, although the La Liga champions were interested in signing the younger brother of Iñaki Williams last summer, they have moved on and are exploring other options in the market.

“We valued Nico as a potential signing last summer with Dani Olmo, but right now I think the club is valuing other players,” Joan Laporta said, as quoted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Laporta added, “There will be changes in our squad this summer.

“Our rivals will also strengthen because they have seen that our team is the best right now.”

Nico Williams was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona last summer after an outstanding campaign for Athletic Club and the Spain national team.

The talented youngster decided to stay at Athletic Club and signed a contract extension.

Although Barcelona are no longer interested in signing Williams, he is a transfer target for English Premier League side Arsenal.

67-year-old cement seller commits suicide allegedly over missing cement bags

A 67-year-old cement seller, identified as Fredrick Adama, alias Fo Yao, has been discovered dead in his bedroom under mysterious circumstances.

The incident occurred at Ho Barracks Newtown near Kpenoe in the Volta Region.

His lifeless body was discovered after friends broke into his room when repeated calls to his phone went unanswered, which they said was unlike him despite his age.

Information gathered by classfmonline.com indicates that Adama was in charge of the Chapel Square Cement Depot at Ho Barracks Newtown.

An eyewitness and co-tenant said Adama was last seen on Monday morning around 7 am. Upon asking him why he closed the shop, he said he was expecting some cement to arrive before opening the shop for sales.

Due to his relationship with his customers and the proximity of his house to the cement shop, it was common for people to visit his house when the shop was closed to call on him to buy cement. However, this morning, he was nowhere to be found between 8 am and 9 am.

The growing concern of customers led them to involve Adama’s family members. Upon the arrival of Margaret, a cousin, the deceased was found lifeless and unresponsive in his bedroom.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that Adama had hanged himself.

Richard Adama disclosed to Class News that the owner of the cement depot had recently invited him to help question the deceased over 50 bags of cement that had gone missing.

“About two weeks ago, the owner of the shop called me to help him question my brother over an alleged missing 50 bags of cement. I questioned my brother, but he denied the allegation against him,” he said.

“And again, just last week, the man called me over another missing 14 bags of cement, and this time the man said my brother must provide the cement or else he would sack him. I pleaded with him to give me time to question him, but the issue remained unresolved,” he continued.

“So the man said he had started building a single self-contained apartment for him to accommodate him, but if the missing cement could not be traced, then he would be forced to either sack him or allow him to use the money [from the missing cement bags] to finish the building, which is currently at the roofing level,” he added.

Meanwhile, these issues remained unresolved before Fredrick Adama, alias Fo Yao, took his own life.

It is unclear whether the allegations led him to suicide.

The body has been transported to the Ho Teaching Hospital mortuary for further examination as investigations continue.

The incident has left the community in shock, with many awaiting answers about what led to his untimely death.

The late Fredrick Adama lef behind an 11-year-old daughter.

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed that Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad next week for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in the United Kingdom.

Ghana’s senior national team will compete in a four-nation tournament later this month, with a high-profile semi-final clash against long-time West African rivals Nigeria scheduled for May 28 at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium. Kick-off is at 19:00 GMT.

The winner of that match will progress to the final on May 31, where they will meet the victor of the other semi-final between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

The final is set to kick off at 12:30 GMT.

In an interview, Mr Asante Twum confirmed that preparations are underway, and fans can expect a few new names in the squad, alongside the team’s established core.

“I know the technical team is considering how to approach this Cup; there will be some fresh additions while keeping the core of the team,” he said.

He also revealed that any locally based players selected will travel as a domestic contingent directly to London to begin preparations.

“Possibly by next week, the coach will announce his team, and if we have local players, they will join the domestic contingent and move directly to London,” he stated.

Local media reports indicate that Asante Kotoko players Andrews Ntim Manu and Kwame Opoku are likely candidates for the squad.

They could be joined by Kamaradini Mamudu, Razak Simpson, and the current national first-choice goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who are all being considered for the tournament.

The Unity Cup serves as a key opportunity for the Black Stars’ technical team to assess new talent and strengthen squad cohesion ahead of upcoming international competitions.

Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has replied to the growing grievances of Ghanaians on the escalating cost of data with a daring and significant statement. He recently posted the following on X (previously Twitter):

focusing on the goal. The process is under way, the work has been established, and it will be completed to the people’s advantage and to God’s glory.

Using hashtags like #LionBorn, #HyeWonHye, and #ThatWhichIsIndestructible to show his confidence and fortitude, he ended the message.

Major Ghanaian telecoms companies’ soaring data charges have sparked popular outrage. Many customers think the increases are impeding everyday digital activity and making internet access costly.

The minister did not specifically mention the price increases, but his statement is generally taken to mean that the government is cognizant of the problem and is trying to find a solution. However, some contend that symbolic language is insufficient and demand tangible steps to alleviate Ghanaians’ financial burden.

Under the Mahama-led government, Hon. Sam George formally assumed office in February 2025 and is anticipated to lead improvements in Ghana’s digital industry, such as equitable pricing, cybersecurity, and expanded internet access. Ghanaians are waiting for concrete actions that match the minister’s assured remarks while the discussion goes on.

Newborn found dead in a KVIP

Residents of Fetentaa, a community in the Berekum West District, encountered a distressing incident involving a newborn baby dumped in a KVIP facility.

The perpetrator behind the incident remains unknown, prompting local authorities to initiate an investigation.

Kwaku Emmanuel Effah, the Assembly Member for the area, confirmed the incident on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem.

He stated that, upon receiving the report, he, along with the Unit Committee Chairman Mr Kuti and Gyaasehene Nana Keabenahene, verified the information, which was found to be true.

According to the Assemblyman, a resident who intended to use the toilet facility heard a baby’s cry after a young lady had entered the toilet.

The Assemblyman and his team subsequently informed the area chief, Nana Kwesi Ntim Yeboah II.

The chief arranged for a group of local waste disposal workers to remove the baby, and the remains were buried later that evening.

In response, local traditional leaders issued a community-wide announcement, appealing for anyone with information to come forward to aid in identifying the perpetrator.

They also urged the person responsible to surrender voluntarily, warning that, if no one comes forward, traditional rites, including libation, would be performed to invoke consequences on the culprit.

The traditional leaders cautioned that, if the perpetrator is later identified, both the police and traditional authorities will take strict action.

Ghana’s economic landscape in 2025 presents a striking paradox. The cedi has emerged as one of the world’s best-performing currencies, appreciating by approximately 16% against the US dollar and contributing to a decline in inflation to 21.2% by April 2025.

This remarkable turnaround follows a turbulent 2024 when the currency depreciated by nearly 24%, fueling economic instability and eroding purchasing power. Yet, despite these positive macroeconomic indicators, ordinary Ghanaians continue to grapple with persistently high prices for goods and services.

This phenomenon is not without historical precedent. Ghana’s economic history reveals several instances where currency appreciation failed to translate into immediate consumer benefits. Understanding both the current drivers of the cedi’s strength and these historical parallels provides crucial insights for policymakers seeking to convert macroeconomic gains into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.

The Drivers of Cedi Appreciation

The cedi’s resurgence stems from a confluence of domestic policy reforms and favorable global economic conditions. Domestically, the Bank of Ghana’s Gold4Oil and now GoldBod initiative has been instrumental, increasing gold reserves by 40.6% from May 2024 to April 2025.

This strategic accumulation has not only strengthened Ghana’s foreign exchange buffer but also boosted investor confidence and reduced speculative pressures on the currency. The program’s requirement that 20% of gold export proceeds be converted into cedis before dollar exchange has further stabilized forex supply.

Concurrent fiscal reforms under Ghana’s IMF program have significantly contributed to the currency’s recovery. The government’s elimination of distortionary taxes like the E-levy, the intent to abolish the COVID-19 levy, combined with prudent expenditure cuts, has enhanced fiscal credibility.

The $3 billion Extended Credit Facility from the IMF has restored economic confidence, with an anticipated $370 million tranche expected soon. These measures have been validated by S&P Global Ratings’ upgrade of Ghana’s credit status from Selective Default to CCC+.

The temporary suspension of external debt repayments through Ghana’s ongoing restructuring program has provided crucial breathing room, with the next major payment due in July 2025. This respite has alleviated pressure on foreign exchange reserves, enabling the cedi to stabilize. The Bank of Ghana’s direct market interventions, including a $490 million forex injection in April 2025, have further supported the currency’s appreciation.

Global economic shifts have complemented these domestic efforts. The US dollar’s weakening due to trade tensions and recession concerns has indirectly benefited emerging market currencies like the cedi, with the DXY index falling approximately 10% since January 2025. Simultaneously, record prices for Ghana’s key exports—gold reaching $3,400 per ounce and cocoa hitting $10,000 per ton—have significantly boosted foreign exchange inflows. The formalization of small-scale mining operations has augmented these gains by increasing legally exported gold volumes.

The Persistent Challenge of Price Stickiness

Despite these favorable currency movements, consumer prices remain stubbornly high due to several structural and behavioral factors. Price stickiness—the economic phenomenon where prices adjust more readily upward than downward—plays a significant role. Businesses, uncertain about the sustainability of the cedi’s strength, hesitate to reduce prices. Many operate under long-term contracts for rent, utilities, and wages negotiated during higher inflation periods, complicating immediate price reductions.

Domestic cost structures continue to exert upward pressure on prices. While a stronger cedi reduces imported input costs, expenses like transportation, electricity, and labor remain elevated. Recent utility tariff hikes and persistently high fuel prices, influenced by global oil markets, maintain cost pressures that limit businesses’ ability to lower consumer prices.

Inventory cycles create additional lags. Many traders continue selling goods purchased when the cedi was weaker, meaning the benefits of currency appreciation will only manifest as new stock arrives. For import-dependent sectors like electronics and pharmaceuticals, this adjustment may take three to six months.

Market dynamics further complicate the picture. Unlike swift price increases during depreciation, downward adjustments face weaker competitive and regulatory pressures. While the Ghana Union of Traders encourages price reductions, voluntary compliance allows some businesses to maintain higher margins. Moreover, global commodity prices for essentials like rice, wheat, and fuel remain elevated due to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions, keeping local prices high despite currency gains.

Historical Parallels and Policy Lessons

Ghana’s economic history offers several instructive parallels to the current situation. The 2017 cedi recovery following the IMF bailout and oil production commencement saw similar patterns—while inflation dropped from 15.4% to 11.8%, consumer prices remained elevated due to structural bottlenecks. The 2007 cedi redenomination provided temporary stability but ultimately failed without deeper reforms, leading to renewed depreciation by 2014.

These historical episodes yield crucial policy lessons. First, temporary fixes like forex interventions or redenomination cannot substitute for sustained structural reforms. Second, domestic cost pressures require direct attention, as currency appreciation alone cannot offset local inflationary drivers.

Third, active cultivation of market competition is essential to ensure businesses pass forex gains to consumers. Fourth, economic diversification beyond commodities is critical for long-term stability. Finally, managing public expectations through transparent communication helps maintain confidence during transitional periods.

Consumer Expectations and Policy Recommendations

In the short term (three to six months), consumers may see gradual price declines in import-heavy sectors like electronics and vehicles as new stock arrives. However, staple food prices will likely remain elevated due to global supply constraints. Over the medium term (six to twelve months), sustained cedi strength should lead to broader price adjustments, though careful management of potential interest rate cuts will be crucial to avoid reigniting inflation.

For lasting stability, comprehensive structural reforms are essential. These include:

Maintaining fiscal discipline through continued IMF program implementation

Addressing domestic cost pressures via energy sector improvements and transport infrastructure development

Strengthening market competition through appropriate regulatory frameworks

Diversifying Ghana’s economic base beyond commodity exports

Enhancing price transparency mechanisms and local production capacity

Conclusion: From Temporary Recovery to Sustainable Stability

Ghana’s current economic position presents both opportunities and risks. While the cedi’s appreciation creates favorable conditions for reform implementation, history shows these gains may prove temporary without decisive action.

By learning from past experiences and implementing comprehensive structural reforms, Ghana can work toward an economic future where currency stability translates into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.

The path forward requires not just maintaining current policies but building upon them to create a more diversified, competitive, and resilient economy capable of delivering sustained prosperity.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Boss, Richard Ofori Agyemang, popularly known as Zuba, visited the dressing room of Kumasi Asante Kotoko to congratulate the team on their victory over Dreams FC last Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

During the visit, Zuba urged the team to remain focused and work hard to win all their remaining matches. He assured the players that he would join them for their upcoming game against Bibiani Gold Stars.

As a devoted supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Zuba emphasised that the ultimate goal for every Kotoko fan is to see the team competing in African tournaments.

He therefore encouraged the players and technical team to do everything possible to secure qualification for continental football.

In a show of further support, Zuba pledged to collaborate with the Ashanti Regional Minister to visit all the supporters’ circles, appealing to fans to fill the stadium during home games.

As a token of appreciation for their recent performance, Zuba presented a cash donation of GH₵5,000 to the players. He also assured the technical team that their support package would follow soon.

Tariq Lamptey doubtful for Ghana’s UK tournament after fresh injury blow at Brighton

Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey has suffered another injury setback Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey has suffered another injury setback

Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey has suffered another injury setback, casting doubt over his involvement in the upcoming four-nation tournament in London, where the Black Stars are set to face Trinidad & Tobago, Nigeria, and Jamaica.

The 24-year-old was absent from Brighton & Hove Albion’s squad for their 3-2 win over Liverpool on Monday, the club’s final home fixture of the season.

Lamptey had started in their previous match against Wolves but was forced off with a knee injury, just weeks after returning from a foot problem.

His latest setback further clouds his future at Brighton, with his contract expiring this summer and little indication of renewal talks.

The right-back, who has struggled with persistent injuries, has fallen down the pecking order under Roberto De Zerbi, behind Joel Veltman.

Lamptey was previously linked with a move to Ajax during the January transfer window, while Everton are also reportedly monitoring his situation.

With the Black Stars assembling in London for friendly matches on May 28 and June 3 (not June 31, which is not a valid date), his fitness remains a major concern for Otto Addo’s technical team.

Mahama petitioned to dissolve panel investigating Chief Justice

Suspended Chief Justice Torkonoo is being investigated after a prima facie case was established Suspended Chief Justice Torkonoo is being investigated after a prima facie case was established

Alfred Ababio Kumi, a Ghanaian citizen, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the five-member committee established to investigate requests for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

According to the petition, the integrity and credibility of the ongoing investigation are compromised due to alleged grave violations of judicial conduct by members of the committee.

Addressed to the President and dated shortly after the committee’s inaugural meeting on May 15, 2025, Mr. Kumi raised serious concerns over what he described as a compromising meeting between Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, both members of the committee, and Thaddeus Sory, a lawyer representing one of the petitioners.

Mr. Kumi claims the meeting, which reportedly took place on the evening of May 15 at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area, was also attended by Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi. He alleges that conversations regarding the petition were overheard during the gathering, constituting a serious conflict of interest and a breach of judicial ethics.

“The meeting between Justices Pwamang, Kulendi, and Asiedu with Thaddeus Sory clearly destroys the integrity of the process and undermines public confidence in the proceedings so far,” the petition states.

Additionally, Mr. Kumi argues that Chief Justice Torkornoo has taken contradictory positions in similar cases, while Justice Pwamang had previously ruled in favor of the petitioner represented by Mr. Sory.

He further alleges that Justices Kulendi, Pwamang, and Adibu-Asiedu are all believed to have expressed interest in the Chief Justice position in the past and were reportedly disappointed by President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Justice Torkornoo.

“Justice Pwamang is known to be interested in becoming Chief Justice following your election as President… Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu is also on record as having actively lobbied for the Chief Justice position after the exit of Justice Anin Yeboah,” Kumi stated, as reported by citinewsroom.com

Describing the conduct of the judges as “deplorable” and “most unbecoming,” the petitioner contends that their actions jeopardize their ability to fairly adjudicate the matters before them.

The President announced the committee’s composition on April 22, 2025. It consists of the following five members:

Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang – Supreme Court Judge

Justice Samuel Adibu-Asiedu – Supreme Court Judge

Daniel Yao Domelovo – Former Auditor-General

Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo – Member of the Ghana Armed Forces

Professor James Sefah Dzisah – Professor, University of Ghana

The committee was formed to investigate three separate petitions calling for the removal of the Chief Justice under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. Its first meeting was held on May 15.

Mr. Kumi characterized the process as potentially a “sham” and urged President Mahama to take immediate action to safeguard the legitimacy of the constitutional process and preserve public confidence in the judiciary.

As of now, the Office of the President has not officially responded to the petition.

ECOWAS Trade Ministers urged to harmonise standards to boost regional trade

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni, GNA

Abuja, Nigeria, May 19, GNA – Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, has called on her counterparts in the West African sub-region to fast-track the harmonisation of trade standards to facilitate the free movement of goods across ECOWAS member states.

She made the call at the Fourth Joint Meeting of ECOWAS Ministers of Trade and Industry held in Abuja, Nigeria, from May 13 to 15, 2025.

The Minister noted that the 50th Anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) should serve as a moment of reflection on the achievements of the past five decades and inspire member countries to chart a new path toward deeper economic integration.

She said regional economic empowerment remained a central objective of ECOWAS and that recent geopolitical realignments, global inflation, and disruptions in supply chains presented significant challenges to trade and industrial development within the sub-region.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare urged Ministers to leverage the current momentum to reset regional trade relations, accelerate the implementation of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, and advance the accession process to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“The AfCFTA has the potential to transform Africa’s economy, with a projected GDP of £2.7 trillion or US$3.4 trillion by 2035, and significantly boost intra-African trade,” she said.

On infrastructure, the Minister called for a joint meeting between ECOWAS Ministers of Trade and Industry and Ministers of Transport to address the persistent challenges facing transport and logistics in the region.

She cautioned that failure to tackle infrastructure and logistics issues could undermine efforts at boosting intra-regional trade and industrialisation.

The Fourth Joint Meeting reviewed a number of key trade issues including the outcomes of the 13th World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial Conference held in Abu Dhabi.

It also reviewed developments surrounding the AfCFTA, multilateral trading relations, and a draft cooperation agreement between the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) and member states.

Mrs Massandjé Toure-Litse, speaking on behalf of the ECOWAS Commission, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to advancing economic integration across the region.

She said the Commission would continue to work on removing non-tariff barriers, enhancing quality infrastructure, and promoting regional value chains and investment.

Dr Paul Koffi Koffi, representing the President of the WAEMU Commission, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to collaborating with ECOWAS in tackling the common challenges facing the sub-region.

Senator John Owan Enoh, representing the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, expressed optimism that the Ministerial Meeting would produce actionable outcomes on industrial development and intra-regional trade improvement.

Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Chairperson of the Fourth Joint Meeting, commended the Ministers for their strong engagement and reaffirmed the collective commitment to regional integration and economic growth.

Trump’s call with Putin exposes shifting ground on Ukraine peace talks

0

Last year, Donald Trump promised he would end the Ukraine War in “24 hours”.

Last week, he said that it would not be resolved until he and Russian President Vladimir Putin could “get together” and hash it out in person.

On Monday, the ground shifted again.

After a two-hour phone call with Putin, he said that the conditions of a peace deal could only be negotiated between Russia and Ukraine – and maybe with the help of the Pope.

Still, the US president has not lost his sense of optimism about the prospect for peace, posting on social media that the combatants would “immediately start” negotiations for a ceasefire and an end to the war.

That sentiment was somewhat at odds with the Russian view. Putin only said that his country is ready to work with Ukraine to craft a “memorandum on a possible future peace agreement”.

Talks about memorandums and a “possible future” of peace hardly seem the kind of solid ground on which lasting deals can be quickly built.

Putin again emphasised that any resolution would have to address the “root causes” of the war, which Russia has claimed in past to be Ukraine’s desire for closer ties to Europe.

There is a possibility that Trump’s latest take on the war in Ukraine could be a sign that the US will ultimately abandon the negotiating table.

“Big egos involved, but I think something’s going to happen,” Trump said on Monday afternoon. “And if it doesn’t, I’ll just back away and they’ll have to keep going.”

Such a move, however, comes with its own set of questions – and risks.

If the US washes its hands of the war, as Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have also threatened, does it mean the US would also end any military and intelligence support for Ukraine?

And if that is the case, then it may be a development that Russia, with its greater resources compared to a Ukraine cut off from American backing, would welcome.

That prospect is enough to have Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky concerned.

“It’s crucial for all of us that the United States does not distance itself from the talks and the pursuit of peace,” he said on Monday after the Trump-Putin call.

Putting aside Monday’s rhetoric, it appears that Ukraine and Russia are set to continue some kind of talks – and talking in any form is progress after nearly three years of war.

Still to be determined is whether the Russian team will be more than the low-level delegation that travelled to Istanbul to meet with the Ukrainians last Friday.

Trump is holding out the promise of reduced sanctions on Russia – and new trade deals and economic investment – as the enticement that will move Putin toward a peace agreement.

He mentioned that again in his post-call comments. Not discussed, on the other hand, were any negative consequences, such as new sanctions on Russian banking and energy exports.

The US president last month warned that he would not tolerate Putin “tapping me along” and said that Russia should not target civilian areas.

But yesterday, Russia launched its largest drone strike of the war on Ukrainian cities, and Monday’s call between the two world leaders makes clear that any ceasefire or peace deal still seems well over the horizon.

If not for Gold-for-Oil, our economy would have collapsed – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says Ghana’s economy would have collapsed without the Gold-for-Oil and gold purchase programmes introduced under his watch.

Speaking during his Thank You Tour in the UK at an interaction with the Young Executive Forum (YEF) in London, NPP 2024 flagbearer said the country’s current economic stability is directly tied to bold interventions started before the NDC administration took over.

“If we had not instituted the gold purchase program as well as the gold-for-oil program, our economy would have collapsed,” he declared.

“It would have, because where would we have gotten $5 billion just to support the economy? You wouldn’t have gotten it.”

He said the decision to go for gold was deliberate and strategic because gold didn’t require foreign exchange.

“Why I went for gold is that you don’t need to export to get gold. You need to export cocoa to get foreign exchange, timber, oil — you need to turn it abroad. But as for gold, you just need to dig it or pay for it with cedis. So it was a much easier way to do it.”

Dr Bawumia revealed that in just two years, the Bank of Ghana purchased $5 billion worth of gold.

“Remember, we were going to the IMF just for $3 billion and going through all sorts of hoops. But in two years, we had bought $5 billion,” he said.

He contrasted the NPP’s achievements with the NDC’s current record.

“They have been in office so far, they’ve not even increased it by one ton, not a single one ton,” he stated.

“People, after all the noise of the election, are paying attention to our reserves. That is one thing, which we have built to 30 tons.”

He said when the NPP started, Ghana had just 8.7 tons of gold reserves, a figure that stayed constant for 65 years after independence.

“In just two years, we went to 30,” he said. “That is a big backing for the currency.”

The NPP leader dismissed claims that the recent appreciation of the cedi is due to NDC policy.

“If you are to the NDC to point out exactly what policy they have implemented that has resulted in the appreciation of the cedi. They cannot tell you one,” he said.

“They only passed their budget in March. They’ve not even issued any contracts or paid for anything. So you cannot ascribe what is happening to the currency to a policy they have implemented.”

Dr Bawumia also cited other factors like the weakening of the US dollar globally and a slowdown in domestic government spending.

“If you go to Zambia, for example, the Kwacha has gained a lot of ground also because you have the US dollar declining in value,” he said.

“They are not paying Independent Power Producers (IPPs). That’s why the dumsor is so acute. They are not paying contractors. When you are not spending, there is less pressure on your currency.”

He added that the “careful groundwork” laid by the previous administration would help keep the cedi stable, depending on how the current government manages the economy.

“What we have put in place should help us maintain stability in the currency, but we’ll see how they manage it going down the road,” he said.

Hydrological Authority identifies main cause of Sunday floods

0

Several residential areas across the national capital were flooded following Sunday’s downpour Several residential areas across the national capital were flooded following Sunday’s downpour

The Ghana Hydrological Authority has attributed the flooding in parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025, to illegal structures built on waterways and wetlands, which obstructed natural drainage paths.

Director of Drains at the Hydrological Authority, Richard Amekor revealed that assessments conducted after the heavy rains showed that unapproved constructions were a primary cause of the floods.

“What we picked out on the ground has to do with a lot of illegal buildings on our waterways. People have built on the wetlands and encroached on our water bodies. These are the major things we gathered on the ground today after yesterday’s heavy rains, which caused flooding in some parts of Accra,” he is quoted in a report by myjoyonline.com.

Amekor stressed the urgency of addressing the issue as Ghana approaches the peak of the rainy season, echoing President John Mahama’s directive to demolish structures obstructing drainage systems.

“If you could recall, the President in his speech said that those people living close to our drains, their structures are going to be pulled down to allow water to flow when it rains,” he stated.

He urged residents in affected areas, such as Weija, to vacate and relocate to prevent future disasters.

“They need to leave those places; they are not supposed to be there. For example, in Weija, people are building in the estuary, which is wrong. If they are there and it rains, where will the water go? It will go into their homes, and this is the challenge we are having,” he explained.

Amekor called for stricter control over development to mitigate flooding risks, stating, “So what I am saying is that it is about time we control our development.”

The US Supreme Court has said it will allow the Trump administration to terminate deportation protections for some 350,000 Venezuelans in the US.

The ruling lifts a hold that was placed by a California judge that kept Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in place for Venezuelans whose status’ would have expired last month.

Temporary Protected Status allows people to live and work in the US legally if their home countries are deemed unsafe due to things like countries experiencing wars, natural disasters or other “extraordinary and temporary” conditions.

The ruling marks a win for US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly tried to use the Supreme Court to enact immigration policy decisions.

The Trump administration wanted to end protections and work permits for migrants with TPS in April 2025, more than a year before they were originally supposed to end in October 2026.

Lawyers representing the US government argued that the California federal court, the US District Court for the Northern District of California, had undermined “the Executive Branch’s inherent powers as to immigration and foreign affairs” when it stopped the administration from ending protections and work permits in April.

Ahilan Arulanantham, who represents TPS holders in the case, told the BBC he believes this to be “the largest single action stripping any group of non-citizens of immigration status in modern US history”.

“That the Supreme Court authorised this action in a two-paragraph order with no reasoning is truly shocking,” Mr Arulanantham said.

“The humanitarian and economic impact of the Court’s decision will be felt immediately and will reverberate for generations.”

Because it was an emergency appeal, justices on the Supreme Court did not provide a reasoning for the ruling.

The court’s order only noted one judge’s dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

In August, the Trump administration is also expected to revoke TPS protections for tens of thousands of Haitians.

The ruling on Monday by the Supreme Court marks the latest in a series of decisions on immigration policies from the high court that the Trump administration has left them to rule on.

Last week, the administration asked the Supreme Court to end humanitarian parole for hundreds of thousands of Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan immigrants.

Along with some of their successes, the Trump administration was dealt a blow on Friday when the high court blocked Trump from using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport immigrants in North Texas.

Trump had wanted to use the centuries-old law to swiftly deport thousands from the US, but Supreme Court judges questioned if the president’s action was legal.

‘NDC has no policy behind cedi gains’ – Bawumia dismisses opposition credit for currency stability

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dismissed suggestions that the NDC deserves any credit for the recent gains of the cedi.

The NPP 2024 flagbearer insists that the opposition party has no implemented policy that could have contributed to the currency’s performance.

Speaking during an interaction with the Young Executive Forum (YEF) in London as part of his Thank You Tour of the UK, the former Deputy Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor challenged the basis of the claims.

“If you are to ask the NDC to point out exactly what policy they have implemented that has resulted in the appreciation of the cedi.

“They cannot tell you one that has been implemented, not sort of talked about, but actually implemented,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “They cannot tell you one such policy.”

He explained that the NDC had only recently passed its budget and had not undertaken any real expenditure or projects that could influence the currency’s appreciation.

“They only passed their budget in March. They’ve not even issued any contracts and paid for anything, pretty much.

“So you cannot ascribe what is happening to the currency to a policy that they have implemented. There’s no such policy that has been implemented that has had that impact yet,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia said that the current gains of the cedi are the result of strategic policies implemented during his time in government, especially the gold purchase programme.

“For me, we had anticipated the impact of gold on this economy. I talked about it when we got into dire straits in 2022, and I said that when you look at Ghana being the largest gold producer in Africa, our reserves of gold at that time was 8.7 tons.

“You look at the US, they have 8000 tons, and the UK has over 2000 tons. Same with France, and so it gives confidence in your currency,” he noted.

He explained that gold offered a domestic path to build reserves without needing to export.

“You don’t need to export to get gold, you need to export cocoa to get foreign exchange, timber, oil, you need to turn it abroad. But as for gold, you just need to dig it or pay for it with cedis. So it was a much easier way to do it.”

He revealed that through the gold purchase programme, the central bank had built up $5 billion worth of reserves in two years.

“Remember, we are going to the IMF just for $3 billion, and going through all sorts of hoops. But in two years, we had bought $5 billion. So we increased the gold reserves in Ghana from 8.7 tons to 30 tons.”

“65 years after independence, we only had 8.7 tons, but in just two years, we went to 30, and so that is a big backing for the currency,” he added.

“They have been in office so far, they’ve not even increased it by one ton, not a single one ton.”

Dr. Bawumia further pointed to global currency trends and domestic expenditure controls as other reasons behind the current exchange rate dynamics.

“The US dollar itself is on the decline globally, and that has also strengthened,” he said.

“If you go to Zambia, for example, the Kwacha has gained a lot of ground also because you have the US dollar declining in value.”

He added that the NDC’s lack of spending is also having a temporary effect on the cedi.

“They are not spending. If you are managing an economy, you have to pay your bills. They are not paying IPPs, for example. This is why the dumsor is so acute, and they are not paying contractors. When you are not spending, there is less pressure on your currency.”

He concluded that the programmes he led, including the gold for oil initiative, were essential in preventing an economic collapse.

“If we had not instituted the gold purchase program as well as the gold for oil program, our economy would have collapsed. Where would we have gotten $5 billion just to support the economy? You wouldn’t have gotten it.”

“I believe that it is clear that what we put in place, and I believe this is going to be there for a long time. What we have put in place should help us maintain stability in the currency, but we’ll see how they manage it going down the road,” he said.

Food security has improved under Burkina Faso’s Ibrahim Traoré

0

Prof. Kwesi Aning, Head of the Office for International Cooperation at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), has commended the leadership of Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré for significant improvements in food security in the country.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle, Prof. Aning highlighted key developments under Traoré’s administration, noting that steps taken by the junta government have begun yielding positive results for ordinary Burkinabè citizens.

Prof. Aning stated, “In Burkina Faso, the gold mines have been nationalised. We’re seeing roads being built. Hectares are being given to farmers. Even more importantly, food security has improved.”

Prof. Aning explained that the improvements are particularly evident in areas previously plagued by hunger and malnutrition.

He also questioned prevailing narratives about Burkina Faso in Western media, suggesting they may not reflect the current realities on the ground.

“In regions where children were starving and couldn’t concentrate on their education and were being destroyed by ‘kwashiorkor’, now they can live… It raises questions about how the narrative is being created by the West and in the West,” he pointed out.

Abeadze State College, the only senior high school serving the Abeadze Traditional Area, has received a much-needed boost through a donation of essential facilities from the Tau Alpha Lambda Chapter (TAL) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

The donation, presented at a ceremony on the school grounds, included two water pumps for the boys’ dormitories, tables and chairs for the dining hall, a cooker, and a refrigerator for the Home Science Department.

The support came through the efforts of Ghanaian members of Alpha Phi Alpha in both Ghana and the Americas.

Dasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, Paramount Chief of the Abeadze Traditional Area, who was present at the event alongside his sub-chiefs, welcomed the gesture with deep appreciation.

“This is a profound gesture to support the only Senior High School in my community. We are grateful,” he said. “I urge the school authorities and students to take very good care of these items so that others will be encouraged to also support the school in the future.”

Headmistress of Abeadze State College, Helena Sarpong, also thanked the fraternity for responding to a critical need in the school. “We are grateful to the Alphas across the world. You have answered a critical need,” she said. “However, I must humbly place before you that our bathroom facilities are in horrible shape. If there is to be a Phase III, that would be our most urgent area of need.”

The event drew a large crowd of students, staff, traditional leaders, and local government officials, including Assemblyman Charles Ennim and Parent-Teacher Association executives. More than 350 students were in attendance.

Speaking on behalf of the fraternity, Vice President of Tau Alpha Lambda, Dr Nana Kweku Nduom, stated that the donation was part of an ongoing relationship between the fraternity and the school.

“This marks Phase II of our relationship with the school. Alphas promote scholarship, and to us, education is premium,” he said, noting the fraternity’s intention to return for further support.

Dr Nduom was joined by fellow TAL members Nana Ofori Owusu, Ivan Hoffman, Michael Owusu, and Andrew Amoo.

The group later visited the Omanhene’s palace, where discussions focused on strengthening the partnership and identifying additional areas where the fraternity could assist.

Tau Alpha Lambda is the Ghana chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a US-founded organization established in 1906 to support African American students.

The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, has pledged her commitment to prioritize sports as a major tool in enhancing the image of the Ghana Prisons Service.

She said sports contribute immensely to building officers and inmates both physically and mentally.

The Director-General made this call when a delegation from the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), led by President Charles Osei Asibey, paid a working visit to congratulate her on her new role and discuss the growth of armwrestling.

“I have played and administered sports throughout my life. This made me disciplined, active, and has played a key role in where I am today. Sports built my confidence and gave me the platform to shine, so I know what sports can do and how they can transform individuals into becoming better people,” she said.

She added that the Directorate has begun engaging with other authorities to encourage inmates and officers of the Prisons Service to actively participate in sports for rehabilitation and unearthing more talent.

Mrs Baffoe-Bonnie further assured that her office would do its utmost to make sports a frontline initiative in the service to change the narrative and image of the Prison Service.

“This transformational plan will serve as a cornerstone for the successful reintegration of prisoners, equipping them with essential skills and confidence for the future,” she added.

The Ghana Prisons Service has paid its dues in the development of sports, having previously held the baton for producing top sportsmen and women who have won laurels for Ghana.

Mr Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) and the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), said a relationship with the Prisons Service would yield positive results, culminating in the Prisons Service producing national and continental champions.

He recalled years past when the Ghana Prisons Service was a formidable competitor in sports, producing notable athletes like Felix Aboagye, Eric Nkansah, and Mark Anthony Awere for Ghana.

“Sports, when revamped in the service, will have diverse benefits. They can be used for public relations, rebranding purposes, and as an internally generated fund for the Service. A lot must be done to reverse the dwindling fortunes,” he said.

He congratulated Mrs Baffoe-Bonnie and wished her well in the years ahead.

The Ghana Prisons Service and the Ghana Armwrestling Federation mutually agreed at the meeting to immediately commence the training and establishment of an armwrestling club, comprising officers and inmates, to dominate the local scene.

Present at the meeting were the Vice President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum; Technical Director, Mr Husseini Akuetteh Addy; Greater Accra Armwrestling Secretary, Mr Henry Quarshie; and Mr Prosper Ashiquaye of the Volta Regional Armwrestling.

The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service has since been named a patron of Ghana Armwrestling.

Transport fares to drop by 15% effective May 24

0

Transport fares are set to decline by 15% starting May 24, 2025, following successful negotiations between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport.

The fare adjustment reflects recent macroeconomic developments, including a sustained appreciation of the cedi against the US dollar, which has contributed to a notable drop in fuel prices.

The development also comes in the wake of a directive from the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, urging its members to reduce the prices of auto parts in response to the improved exchange rate.

Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, confirmed the fare reduction in an interview with Citi News, describing it as a timely measure to align with ongoing market trends and ease the financial burden on commuters.

“We have finally agreed to reduce lorry fares by 15%, but it will take effect from Saturday. Although currently, spare parts sellers have promised to reduce some of their prices for now, which hasn’t taken effect, and none of the lubricants which went up has been reduced currently, but we decided to peg the reduction at 15%.”

Russia and Ukraine to ‘immediately’ start ceasefire talks, says Trump

0

US President Donald Trump says Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” start negotiating towards a ceasefire and an end to the war after a two-hour phone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Trump, who described the conversation as having gone “very well”, also said conditions for peace would need to be negotiated between the two parties.

Putin said he was ready to work with Ukraine on a “memorandum on a possible future peace agreement”, but did not address demands from the US and European countries for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.

Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said “this is a defining moment”, and urged the US not to distance itself from talks.

While Trump has expressed positivity towards his conversation with Putin, there was no indication about when peace negotiations would take place, or if Moscow is prepared to make any concessions on its demands for a ceasefire.

After his one-on-one call with Trump, Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s desire for a “full and unconditional ceasefire”, and warned if Moscow is not ready, “there must be stronger sanctions”.

Speaking earlier before Trump’s conversation with Putin, Zelensky said he had asked that any decisions about Ukraine not be made without his country, calling them “matters of principle” for Ukraine.

He added he did not have any details on a “memorandum” but said once they have received anything from the Russians, they will “be able to formulate their vision accordingly”.

Writing on his Truth Social page after the call, Trump said: “Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” adding he had informed Zelensky of this in a second call, which also included other world leaders.

He added: “The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.”

Zelensky said the negotiation process “must involve both American and European representatives at the appropriate level”.

“It is crucial for all of us that the United States does not distance itself from the talks and the pursuit of peace, because the only one who benefits from that is Putin,” he explained.

Talking at a White House event later in the day, Trump said the US would not be stepping away from brokering talks between Russia and Ukraine, but that he has a “red line in his head” on when he will stop pushing on them both.

He also denied that the US was stepping back from its negotiating role.

In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly warned that the US would step away from negotiations as he became increasingly frustrated at the lack of developments from both Moscow and Kyiv in the way of peace.

When asked what he believes about Russia, he said he thinks Putin has had enough of the war and wants it to end.

Meanwhile, Putin, who described the call with Trump, which he took from a music school on a visit to the city of Sochi, as “frank, informative and constructive”, also spoke of the potential for a ceasefire.

“We have agreed with the US president that Russia will offer and is ready to work with Ukraine on a memorandum on a possible future peace agreement,” he said.

This, he added would define “a number of positions” including “principles of the settlement and a timeline for concluding a possible peace agreement…including a possible ceasefire for a certain period of time, should relevant agreements be reached”.

Yury Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, said a ceasefire timeframe was not “discussed… although Trump, of course, emphasises his interest in reaching one or another agreement as soon as possible”.

Zelensky held a second call with Trump after the US president spoke to Putin, which also included President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and the leaders of France, Italy, Germany and Finland.

“I want to thank President Trump for his tireless efforts to bring a ceasefire to Ukraine,” von der Leyen said, adding: “It’s important that the US stays engaged.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Pope Leo’s offer to host potential peace talks was a gesture welcomed by the US and the other leaders in the call, and “judged positively”.

Earlier this month, the new Pope offered the Vatican as a venue for possible peace talks after Putin turned down Zelensky’s offer to meet face-to-face in Turkey for negotiations.

Kyiv has previously said Putin’s comments saying he desires peace are hollow.

“Putin wants war,” Andriy Yermak, a top aide to the Ukrainian president, said after Russia on Sunday launched what Ukraine said was its biggest drone attack since the full-scale invasion began.

Ukraine says at least 10 people have been killed in Russian strikes in recent days – including nine people in an attack on a civilian minibus in north-eastern Ukraine. Russia says it has also intercepted Ukrainian drones.

The strike on the bushappened just hours after Russia and Ukraine held their first face-to-face talks in more than three years. A prisoner swap was agreed but there was no commitment to a ceasefire.

Trump had offered to attend the talks in Turkey if Putin would also be there, but the Russian president declined to go.

Russia has declared ceasefires before – but only temporary ones. It declared one for 8-11 May – which coincided with victory celebrations to mark the end of World War Two – but Kyiv would not sign up to it, saying Putin could not be trusted and that an immediate 30-day ceasefire was needed.

The Kremlin announced a similar, 30-hour truce over Easter, but while both sides reported a dip in fighting, they accused each other of hundreds of violations.

Russia and Ukraine have been at war since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Minority’s call for dumsor timetable misplaced

0

John Jinapor, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor John Jinapor, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has described as “misplaced” the call by the Minority in Parliament for a load management timetable to be published.

Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), at a press conference on Monday, May 19, 2025, called on the government to immediately publish a clear and reliable load-shedding timetable, as erratic power supply continues to affect homes, businesses, and critical services across the country.

The Minority expressed frustration over what it described as the government’s “deceptive silence” in the face of worsening electricity disruptions. They said the current situation amounts to an unannounced return to “dumsor” and is being poorly managed by both the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

“The Ghanaian people deserve honesty, not excuses,” the Minority stated, urging authorities to stop pretending the situation is under control. “People are living in darkness. Businesses are losing money. Students are unable to study. And yet, the government refuses to even acknowledge the problem.”

However, in a press statement signed by Richmond Rockson, Head of Communications at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Ministry stated that it is important to note that, as a country, Ghana’s current power supply capacity is adequate to meet existing demand, even during peak hours.

He added that the government, led by President Mahama, remains committed to resolving the challenges that have plagued the energy sector over the years.

“While acknowledging that we inherited an extremely challenged distribution system, the government and power sector players continue to take the necessary steps to permanently resolve these issues.

“The current power generation capacity is sufficient to meet peak demand; hence, there is no basis for a load-shedding timetable at this time. The government remains committed to the consistent provision of electricity to the Ghanaian people.”

The Digital Access to Rural Empowerment (DARE) program has commenced in Somanya and Bekwai, bringing transformative digital training opportunities to underserved communities in Ghana.

The first phase of the initiative, which began on Monday, May 12, 2025, is currently training 80 young mothers and women aged between 15 and 35. The training focuses on equipping participants with practical digital skills designed to enhance employability, support entrepreneurship, and ultimately drive economic independence in rural settings.

Speaking to the media, Mr Fredrick Yeboah, Director of Innovation at GI-KACE Consult and the Project Coordinator for the DARE program, shared insights into the program’s vision and implementation. “The DARE program is not just about digital skills; it’s about creating pathways to sustainable livelihoods for young women and mothers in rural Ghana. In this first phase, we expect to train around 240 participants across the communities, preparing them to access meaningful employment opportunities or start income-generating ventures,” Mr Yeboah stated.

Through a carefully curated curriculum, participants will be introduced to essential ICT tools, online platforms for business, and digital entrepreneurship concepts. The initiative also incorporates soft skills development and mentorship to support long-term success.

The DARE program is a timely intervention for communities like Somanya (Yilo-Krobo Municipality) and Bekwai, where digital exclusion has hindered economic growth for women and youth. By promoting inclusion and resilience, DARE is positioning itself as a catalyst for broader socioeconomic transformation in Ghana’s rural landscape.

In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by GI-KACE Consult, with UNESCO and the University of Ghana Business School as partners, the program is already impacting lives across its pilot locations. The program is expected to expand its reach in subsequent phases, scaling up to include additional communities while strengthening partnerships with local leaders, government bodies, and community-based organizations.

As the training continues, early feedback from participants reflects optimism, motivation, and a renewed sense of purpose, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward digital inclusion and empowerment in Ghana.

Poor maintenance culture fueling floods – Hydrological Authority

0

The Head of Drains at the Ghana Hydrological Authority, Richard Kofi Amekor, has underscored the urgent need for a national commitment to better maintenance practices, particularly in the management of drainage systems, as a critical step in tackling Ghana’s recurring flooding problems.

His comments come in the aftermath of widespread flooding across parts of the country following heavy rains on Sunday, May 18.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, May 19, Mr. Amekor emphasized that the country’s persistent neglect of basic maintenance tasks, such as clearing drains and sweeping roads, continues to increase its vulnerability during the rainy season.

“It is about time as a nation we take a very critical look at our maintenance culture,” he said. “We need to clean our drains. Elsewhere, you see people sweeping the roads, but we don’t do it.

“When you are driving, you see a lot of sand gathered at the edges of the roads. So what happens? When it rains, it pushes all these into the drains, and now the water doesn’t have anywhere to go,” he added.

Mr. Amekor’s call renews attention on the country’s inadequate flood preparedness and the need for proactive maintenance to protect lives and property during the rainy season.

Traders don’t trust the current situation – KNUST lecturer explains price standoff

0

Despite recent gains by the Ghanaian cedi against major foreign currencies, many traders remain unwilling to adjust their prices downward—a situation that has drawn attention and sparked debate.

Dr. Owoahene Acheampong, a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has offered a compelling explanation for this reluctance, pointing to a crisis of confidence in government economic management.

Ghana Cedi’s turnaround signals economic progress

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has praised the Ghana cedi’s strong performance against major global currencies, describing it as a major shift in the country’s economic trajectory.

Speaking at the swearing-in of members of the Governing Board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in Accra on Monday, May 19, Dr. Forson disclosed that the cedi had appreciated by 16.7% against the US dollar as of May 13, 2025—marking a sharp turnaround from the same period last year.

“As of May 13, 2025, the Ghana cedi has solidified its position as the standout performer among global currencies, achieving a remarkable 16.7% appreciation against the US dollar year-to-date,” he said.
“This marks a significant reversal from the 13.4% depreciation observed in the same period of 2024, with the cedi earning recognition as the top-performing currency in April 2025,” he added.

Dr. Forson credited the improvement to coordinated policy efforts between the Bank of Ghana and the Finance Ministry.

“This rally stems from a robust policy framework, underpinned by synchronized monetary and fiscal measures, as well as a favorable global context. The central bank, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, has adopted a stringent monetary policy, complemented by aggressive liquidity sterilization,” he explained.

He further expressed confidence that the work of GoldBod would help sustain and enhance the cedi’s stability.

“The activities of the Goldbod stand to further strengthen this performance. In fact, it will change how both the Ghana cedi and Ghana’s foreign exchange accumulation will behave in the future,” Dr. Forson said.

Ahafo Ano North Assembly seeks urgent security ahead of Municipal meeting

0

Concerned assembly members of the Ahafo Ano North Municipal Assembly have petitioned the Inspector General of Police to provide heightened security ahead of a scheduled meeting on May 20, 2025, citing threats of violence and rising insecurity in the area.

In a letter dated May 19, the assembly members recounted a violent incident that occurred following the declaration of the 2024 General Election results, when armed thugs stormed Tepa, the constituency capital, unleashing mayhem and instilling fear among residents.

They noted that during a recent meeting on May 16 to elect a Presiding Member, the same group of thugs disrupted proceedings and allegedly attempted to harm some members, prompting police intervention to escort them to safety.

With intelligence suggesting another potential attack during the upcoming meeting, the assembly members are pleading with police authorities to ensure adequate protection.

“As law-abiding citizens, we have come to you because our lives are in danger,” the letter read, warning that failure to act could result in further violence.

Since its arrival in Ghana in 2015, Karpowership has played a pivotal role in transforming the country’s energy sector.

By deploying one of its advanced floating power plants, known as a Powership, the company has helped stabilize Ghana’s electricity supply and delivered significant economic benefits cementing its position as a key partner in the nation’s power sector.

In August 2019, Karpowership strategically relocated the 470 MW Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan from Tema to the Sekondi Naval Base in the Western Region.

This move was aimed at harnessing Ghana’s indigenous natural gas resources by transitioning from Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) to natural gas.

Crucially, the switch to natural gas is projected to save electricity users approximately $170.5 million annually, with total savings estimated at $1.2 billion over the remaining term of the contract—providing substantial financial relief for the country and its citizens.

Fast-Track Deployment and Operational Efficiency

Karpowership’s approach is distinguished by the rapid deployment of Powerships. Unlike traditional land-based power plants that require extensive site preparation and prolonged construction periods, these Powerships are delivered ready for power generation within a remarkably short time frame.

This swift deployment is achieved without the need for major site preparation, thereby eliminating construction risks and ensuring that electricity is fed directly into the transmission network from the onboard high-voltage substation.

This plug-and-play model has been instrumental in addressing urgent power shortages, providing immediate relief to the national grid.

High Efficiency and Fuel Flexibility

Engineered for high efficiency, Karpowership’s Powerships utilize advanced dual-fuel engine and gas turbine technology.

This design allows for seamless operation on multiple fuel types, including natural gas (NG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and low-sulfur heavy fuel oil (HFO).

Such flexibility ensures that the Powerships can adapt to various fuel availabilities, delivering cost-effective electricity suitable for base load, mid-merit, and peak shaving applications. The result is significant savings per kilowatt-hour for consumers and industries alike

Witnesses testified last week about Combs’ hotel room and alleged violence. Here’s where we left off

Embattled rapper, Sean ''Diddy ' Combs Embattled rapper, Sean ”Diddy ‘ Combs

Prosecutors called two more witnesses before the end of Friday’s testimony after Cassie Ventura, Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ex-girlfriend, finished her nearly 20 hours on the stand.

Here’s a summary of each testimony:

Yasin Binda

Background: Binda is a Homeland Security Investigations special agent who works in the human trafficking division at the department. She handled the logistics for Combs’ arrest on September 16, 2024, and searched the room at the Park Hyatt where Combs was staying.

Baby oil and lubricant: The jury saw photos of two ziploc bags, each filled with Johnson’s baby oil and Astroglide, recovered from bags in an entryway closet. More bottles of baby oil and lubricant were found in the bathroom, on the nightstand and elsewhere in the room, according to the photos and Binda’s testimony.

Medication: A bottle of medication was found in a Louis Vuitton bag on a nightstand in the bedroom, Binda said. The name on the bottle was “Frank Black” and the label identified the medication as clonazepam, Binda said. Two bags of pink powder, which tested positive for ketamine and MDMA were also recovered, she said.

Cross-examination: Binda testified it appeared that a woman had been staying with him at the hotel.

Dawn Richard

Background: Richard is a former member of Danity Kane, a musical group formed by Combs as part of the MTV reality series “Making the Band.”

Accounts of violence: Richard testified she saw Combs attack Ventura in 2009. She said Combs came into the kitchen where they both were and tried to hit Ventura with a skillet. After the altercation, Combs dragged Ventura by her hair upstairs, Richard said. She said she heard “glass braking and yelling.”

Fear of Combs: Richard said she didn’t report the abuse because she was afraid and was “scared to do anything in fear of what that might mean for me, too.”

The next day, Richard said Combs asked her and another woman to come to his house where he told them what they witnessed was “passion” and what lovers do and told them it was in their “best interest if we didn’t say anything.”

The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare-Addo, Esq., has issued a clarion call to the newly inaugurated board of the National Service Authority (NSA), urging them to restore credibility and transform the institution into a beacon of hope and opportunity for Ghana’s youth.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra on May 19, 2025, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Opare-Addo charged the board to confront head-on the persistent problem of ghost names within the National Service Scheme.

He emphasized the need for bold reforms underpinned by transparency, accountability, and technological innovation.

“The reports of mismanagement and corruption, particularly the ghost names scandal, have rightly caused public concern. These issues have undermined the credibility of the Scheme and diverted resources that should have been used to empower our young people,” he stated.

The minister acknowledged the recent success of the NSA in purging about 2,000 ghost names from its payroll but stressed that more work remains to be done.

“Let us seize this opportunity to transform the National Service Scheme into a beacon of hope and opportunity for our young people. Let us build an NSA that is worthy of their talent, their energy, and their aspirations,” he added.

He reiterated the administration’s vision of the National Service Scheme as a vital platform to unlock the potential of Ghana’s youth. He noted that the Scheme must serve as a bridge to meaningful employment, entrepreneurship, and national service.

“It is very necessary for graduates to contribute to national development, to gain invaluable experience, and to hone the skills that will propel them to success; hence, the challenges that have plagued the NSA in recent times cannot be ignored,” he said.

The minister urged the board to “reimagine” the future of the NSA by correcting past mistakes and building a forward-looking, effective, and youth-centered institution.

Opare-Addo proposed the establishment of a dedicated fund to support entrepreneurial ventures initiated by National Service personnel.

“It is important to encourage National Service personnel to develop innovative solutions to pressing social and economic challenges. Establishing a fund to support promising entrepreneurial ventures will foster a culture of innovation and self-reliance,” he suggested.

The 15-member board is chaired by Emmanuel Okai Mintah and comprises key representatives from various ministries, institutions, and the private sector.

Members of the board include Dr. James Asare-Adjei from the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Felix Gyamfi, Director-General of the NSA, Cecilia Sheitu Nyadia from the Ministry of Technology and Innovation, Colonel Frederick Aboagye Kasapa from the Ministry of Defence, and Dr. Wisdom Atiwoto from the Ministry of Health.

Other members are Emma Ofori Agyemang from the Ministry of Youth Development, Kwabena Denkyira from the Ministry of Local Government, Paul Siamen from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Shadrack Mensah from the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and Matilda Azumah from the Ministry of Education, as well as two presidential nominees, Henrietta Asante and Elorm Goh.

In response, the newly appointed Chairman of the NSA Board, Emmanuel Okai Mintah, thanked President Mahama for the trust placed in the board and pledged their commitment to delivering on their mandate.

“It is a great privilege to serve on this board, and we promise to carry out our responsibilities with diligence and to the full extent of our capabilities,” Mintah stated.

“The National Service Authority has tremendous potential, and through our leadership, in collaboration with management, we aim to achieve its strategic goals.”

Krowor Municipal Assembly demolishes shrine erected on waterway

0

The Krowor Municipal Assembly has demolished a shrine that was reportedly authorised by some revered traditional authorities in Nungua.

The structure had been erected in the middle of the Coastal Road, which also serves as a waterway.

According to the Assembly, despite prior engagements with the traditional leaders, they received reports that construction was continuing—an act seen as defiance of the Assembly’s directives.

This prompted a swift demolition exercise on Monday morning, although it was met with some resistance from a few individuals.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, May 19, the Municipal Chief Executive, Paul Afotey Quaye, issued a stern warning against building on waterways.

He emphasised that such actions contribute to flooding and will not be tolerated, adding that any illegal structures will be pulled down.

“The rains are coming. We cannot allow structures that are built in waterways to stand, and let me also seize this golden opportunity to sound a caution to all members of our society who are building areas without permits, who are building waterways, to desist because the long arms of the assembly and the law will reach them.

“We cannot allow the selfish interests of a few people to override those of the community. That will completely bring down His Excellency, the President’s agenda to reset the country. Like I indicated before, it cannot be business as usual.

“So this activity is not an attack on our traditional authorities. I had said earlier that the state and the traditional authority are the twin pillars upon which the survival of our community is built,” Quaye said.

World Health Organization in financial crisis after US withdrawal

0

Geneva, May 19, (dpa/GNA) – The World Health Organization (WHO) is facing a shortfall of $1.7 billion over the next two years, Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva on Monday.

The WHO’s financial crisis was prompted by the withdrawal of the United States and Argentina from the UN organization, which was founded in 1948.

The US contributed around one-fifth of the WHO’s expenditure. The health organization has already cut its planned two-year budget for 2026-27 by around 20% to $2.1 billion per year.

Tedros said that figure was not nearly enough, and was equivalent to what is spent on military equipment worldwide every eight hours.

The WHO is reducing its top management body from 14 to seven positions and the number of departments from 76 to 34, Tedros said.

Among those leaving is Mike Ryan, the emergency response coordinator who became known during the coronavirus pandemic for his public briefings. The number of employees worldwide is to be reduced by 20% from around 9,500.

The US actually still owes the WHO around $130 million dollars for 2025, though it is considered unlikely that the money will be paid. The US withdrawal from the WHO will take effect at the beginning of 2026.

Tedros spoke on the first day of the WHO’s eight-day annual assembly of members in Geneva.

Formal adoption of international pandemic treaty expected

A key focus of the assembly is the formal adoption of a long-anticipated international pandemic treaty.

Developed at record speed in response to lessons learned from the coronavirus pandemic, the agreement aims to prevent the kind of chaos seen in the global scramble for medical supplies and to ensure fairer distribution of vaccines in future health crises.

The treaty is scheduled for formal adoption on Tuesday.

However, several contentious details remain unresolved and are expected to be negotiated separately over the next year as part of an annex to the treaty.

These include, for instance, how vaccine manufacturers obtain pathogens with pandemic potential and what the countries that provide them receive in return.

Germany reaffirms WHO support

Germany’s Health Minister Nina Warken said on the sidelines of the meeting: “The next pandemic must not catch the global community unprepared again,” adding that it is important that not every country acts on its own, as health does not stop at national borders.

A day after Germany pledged to increase its support for the WHO by an additional €10 million ($11.2 million) to help fill the gap left by the US exit, Warken said during her speech at the plenary: “The world needs a strong WHO.”

Germany has previously supported the WHO with approximately €290 million over 2024 and 2025, according to government figures.

The World Health Assembly brings together delegates from the WHO’s 194 member states and is the organization’s main decision-making body.

Kwame Jantuah Defends Sammy Gyamfi Amid Dollar Gift Backlash

Convention People’s Party (CPP) member Kwame Jantuah has criticized the public outcry over National Democratic Congress (NDC) figure Sammy Gyamfi’s alleged dollar gift to evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, calling the backlash excessive despite acknowledging Gyamfi’s misjudgment.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum, Jantuah argued the controversy reflects cultural biases against foreign currency transactions rather than ethical breaches.

“Sammy Gyamfi should have acted more prudently, but the pursuit of this issue stems from the fact that it involved dollars, not cedis,” Jantuah stated. He questioned whether critics would react similarly if the gift were in local currency, labeling the scrutiny a “misplaced cultural practice.”

Jantuah defended Gyamfi’s financial capacity, asserting the politician could afford the gift without public office. “Even if he gave $1,000, is that unattainable for him privately? Since he’s in government, caution was needed—but the outrage is disproportionate,” he added.

Addressing President John Mahama’s decision not to suspend Gyamfi, Jantuah suggested the move followed careful deliberation. “The President likely deemed this inconsequential. Gyamfi and others have learned from it,” he said, shifting focus to accountability: “The real issues are the money’s source and tax compliance, not the gift itself.”

The remarks underscore broader debates about financial transparency and cultural perceptions in Ghanaian politics, with Jantuah urging scrutiny of systemic accountability over sensationalized controversies.

Tourism Stakeholders Mixer delivers ‘Communique’ to Tourism Minister

0

Strengthening public-private partnerships to drive investment and innovation which will ensure long-term success in the tourism sector has been cited as a priority factor for the industry to focus on.

This, among other key findings, is contained in a ‘Communique’ drawn from deliberations at the Tourism Stakeholders Mixer recently held by industry practitioners, and presented to the Minister of Tourism, Culture & Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie at her offices in Accra last week.

Receiving the document, Hon Gomashie made a commitment to study the contents and take action on any necessary cues, noting that a “lack of collaboration” is, indeed, a fundamental challenge facing the industry.

Honing in on ‘collaborative strategies as the basis for responsible tourism and cultural preservation’, Hon Gomashie expressed her desire to work to bring everyone within the tourism and creative industries, which are the most encompassing sectors in government, to work together with one goal in mind – “marketing Ghana as a Cultural Destination”. An objective which is the foundation of the Black Star Experience.

Held under the theme ‘Building the Tourism We Want Together’, organizers of the event, a collaboration of practitioners in the industry comprising the African Tourism Research Network, Hausa Tours, Bentsifi Tourism, Exotic Adventures, Jannice Digital & Co. and Ellevan Consult, the Tourism Stakeholder’s Mixer, which came off at the Conclave Event Center in Osu last February 12, observed that the event served as a vital platform that fostered exchange of ideas and identified key priorities for the growth and sustainability of the tourism industry.

“The discussions and commitments made during the mixer seeks to serve as a foundation for future initiatives and policy actions aimed at enhancing the tourism and hospitality industry,” shared PaJohn Dadson of Bentsifi Tourism, who led the team.

Following the very successful conference, it emerged that more than ever It is essential for all stakeholders to work together to implement the insights and recommendations shared during the event, highlighted of which include “continued engagement, innovation and sustainable practices as key actions in ensuring long-term success.”

Against this background, the Communique captures the following as actions to focus on; Identifying challenges and opportunities in infrastructure, marketing, sustainability, and workforce development; Encouraging collaborative strategies for responsible tourism and cultural preservation and establishing a roadmap for policy improvements, investment incentives, and marketing initiatives to enhance destination appeal.

Also, it captures the need to bring together government officials, private sector representatives,   community leaders, and industry professionals.

The meeting reinforced the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in the tourism industry in shaping a vibrant and competitive tourism sector.

From startups, to tourism business leaders like Mrs Stella W. Appenteng of Apstar Tours, Gideon Asare of Adansi Travels, Francis Doku, Wilma Bruce of IbyService and @Yvonne Ohui MacCarthy, President of the Institute of Customer Service Professionals, and academia in the person of Professor Kwaku Boakye of Cape Coast Technical University, the maiden edition of the Mixer successfully brought together a wide range of key industry players, including notably, Mr Ekow Sampson, Deputy CEO, Technical, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Prof. Kobby Mensah, CEO, Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Mr Adu Gyamfi, President of Ghana Tourism Federation – Ghatof (GHATOF), and Dr Nyameke, President of the Ghana Hotels Association among others.

Ghana, Singapore back carbon credit project in Upper West Region

0

The governments of Ghana and Singapore have given early-stage backing to a proposed carbon credit project led by Ghanaian environmental organization Eco-Bliss Climate.

The initiative, set in Ghana’s Upper West Region, aims to reduce and remove approximately 3.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) by 2030 through climate-smart agricultural practices across 91,000 hectares of land.

Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST) have jointly issued a Letter of Intent, signaling national support for the initiative.

The project has also received a Letter of Support from the Republic of Singapore, through its National Environment Agency (NEA), reinforcing bilateral collaboration under the Ghana–Singapore Article 6.2 Implementation Agreement on climate action.

Focusing on Improved Agricultural Land Management (IALM), the project will implement a range of sustainable farming techniques, including agroforestry, soil carbon enrichment, improved grazing, and sustainable irrigation.

These interventions are expected to help restore degraded lands, improve soil health, and enhance resilience for smallholder farmers in one of Ghana’s most climate-vulnerable regions.

Over 45,000 farmers are expected to benefit directly through training, adoption of improved practices, and access to revenue generated via carbon finance mechanisms.

The project is aligned with both Ghana’s National Climate Change Policy and Singapore’s framework for high-integrity international carbon credits.

“This level of government support affirms the potential of nature-based solutions to address both environmental and socio-economic challenges,” said Awuni Laud Anthony, CEO of Eco-Bliss Climate.

With these endorsements, Eco-Bliss Climate will move forward to prepare a Project Design Document (PDD) under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), detailing emission reduction methodologies, monitoring protocols, and stakeholder engagement strategies.

The project will undergo third-party validation as part of the certification process.

If completed, the initiative would become one of the largest IALM-based carbon credit projects in West Africa, contributing to global net-zero goals while delivering local economic and environmental benefits.

Cassie Ventura testified for more than 20 hours over 4 days. This is what she said

Cassie Ventura and Sean “Diddy” Combs Cassie Ventura and Sean “Diddy” Combs

Cassie Ventura, an ex-girlfriend of Sean “Diddy” Combs and key witness for the prosecution in his federal criminal trial, gave multiple days of intense testimony last week, which included allegations of physical violence and descriptions of drug-fueled sex performances called “Freak Offs.”

The jury also saw and heard text messages and emails from their 11-year on-and-off relationship.

Here’s a recap of what Ventura said in court:

Physical abuse allegations: Ventura said some of her arguments with Combs became violent. “He would smash me in my head, knock me over, drag me, kick me, stomp me in the head if I was down,” she said during the first day on the stand. Ventura said she suffered wounds and other medical issues from the “Freak Offs” and from Combs’ assaults, and the jury saw some of them in real-time photos and an eyebrow scar.

Details of “Freak Offs”: Early in their relationship, Combs proposed “Freak Offs,” in which he would watch Ventura have sex with another man while he pleasured himself in a form of sexual voyeurism, she testified on the first day of her testimony.

Some of the escorts participated in multiple states, according to Ventura. During cross-examination, the defense showed messages between Combs and Ventura in which she expressed both hesitancy and enjoyment with the performances, “when we both want it.”

Hotel assault: Central evidence in the trial includes surveillance video showing Combs beating and kicking Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. Video of the attack was first published by CNN last year. The attack came after she attempted to leave a “Freak Off” before it was finished, she testified. The jury saw a message Ventura sent Combs five days after the assault describing the abuse and his state of mind.

“When you get f**ked up the wrong way you always want to show me that you have the power, and you knock me around. I’m not a rag doll, I’m someone’s child,” she wrote in the message read aloud in court. Ventura said she made a demand for compensation from the InterContinental Hotel and expects to receive about $10 million from them.

Rape accusation:In August 2018, Ventura went to dinner with Combs in Malibu for what she thought was a “closure conversation,” as she was dating her now-husband at the time, she testified. Combs was playful and romantic at the dinner, she recalled, and then he drove her home.

On the witness stand, Ventura paused for a long time before speaking next: “And then he raped me in my living room,” she said. The defense challenged her timeline during cross-examination.

On November 16, 2023, Ventura filed a bombshell lawsuit against Combs alleging he assaulted, raped and sex-trafficked her. Combs denied wrongdoing, and the two settled the lawsuit a day later, but her lawsuit set off a series of other civil suits against Combs alleging wrongdoing. In court on Wednesday, she said the settlement was for $20 million.

Drugs and depression: Ventura testified she took “all kinds” of drugs provided by Combs or his staff at the “Freak Offs” as a way of dissociating and numbing herself. Combs overdosed on painkillers in February 2012 and for a time had an addiction to opiates, Ventura testified.

In 2023, she was having horrible flashbacks and became suicidal, she said. Ventura also said she underwent treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

FAGE to empower youth in agric-export through horticulture

President of Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), Davies Narh Korboe President of Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), Davies Narh Korboe

The President of the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), Davies Narh Korboe, has announced that this year’s Horticulture Expo will serve as a platform to train and engage the youth in agricultural export, in alignment with the government’s 24-hour economy policy.

Speaking on the Agriculture segment of the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM with Afia Brempomaa Hinneh on Monday, May 19, 2025, Korboe emphasized that the initiative aims to reshape perceptions of farming and make agriculture more appealing to young people.

According to him, one of the major challenges facing the agricultural sector is the negative narrative that portrays farming as laborious and outdated—a perception that has discouraged youth participation and left the sector largely dominated by individuals aged 60 and above.

He noted that a lack of funding, limited mechanization, and the absence of modern farming techniques have further contributed to youth disinterest.

“But agriculture today is more than just planting and harvesting,” he stressed. “It is a full value chain—from certification and logistics to marketing and production.”

Korboe highlighted the economic potential of agriculture, noting that the sector, if properly invested in, could help Ghana eliminate its $2 billion annual food import bill.

He believes that the government’s Feed Ghana policy, when supported by modern, mechanized farming practices, can drive food security and create sustainable jobs for the country’s large unemployed youth population.

“Mechanized farming isn’t only about irrigation—it encompasses every aspect of the agricultural value chain,” he said.

The upcoming Horticulture Expo, scheduled for June 11 to 13, 2025, will focus on equipping young Ghanaians with practical knowledge, business connections, and market exposure.

Korboe said the event will leverage research and innovation to groom a new generation of agro-exporters while offering valuable networking opportunities for youth interested in agriculture.

He called on stakeholders to support the event, which he believes will play a vital role in transforming Ghana’s agriculture sector and aligning it with the country’s broader economic goals.

Afram Plains North doesn’t have a single tarred road

0

The Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North, Worlase Kpeli, has lamented the severe lack of infrastructure in his constituency, revealing that the area does not have a single tarred road.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, May 19, Kpeli described the deplorable state of the road network, saying:
“Not even a tarred road, so don’t go asphalt. No, not even a single tarred road. It is a muddy road.”

He noted that the only semblance of road infrastructure in the area dates back to the PNDC era and has since deteriorated due to years of neglect and lack of maintenance.

Kpeli added that the poor road conditions have had a crippling effect on the local economy and development efforts. However, he expressed optimism about the future, pointing to renewed political will to address the issue.

“With the kind of efforts I am signaling from His Excellency John Mahama, it seems this term is going to be one of the best terms in the life of Afram Plains,” he stated.

Accra, May 19,GNA- I was enjoying a troski(trotro) ride from Shiashie to Madina in Accra when the rain started.

It wasn’t too heavy then, when we got to Madina Firestone, the ‘mate” said last stop, everyone in then. car had to get down.
I tried negotiating, ” won’t you go forward a bit.”
“Madam, last stop” came as a sharp response.

I was carrying a small bag of salt, I bought from Ada together with my hand bag. I forced to push my shoes inside my handbag, even though it didn’t fully fit. I had my slippers on and I tried walking through the median of the road to see if I will get another trotro going to Dodowa.

I walked quite a distance, tiptoeing at some point to ensure that I do not fall into a puddle.

As I navigated through the puddle, I heard a man (perhaps a loading boy) saying, aha, the rain is beating them, it should rain aaaa, I resisted laughing loudly. Rain time is boom business for trotro drivers and their mates.

Then I heard the shout of Dodowa Dodowa. I quickly jumped on board, I had to go to the back seat, my knees knocking the back of the other seat.

As we rode, the rain intensified. Whew, I thought, silently thanking God that I got into a ride on time. The rain was leaking through the roof of the trotro at my end, I was getting wet.

I smiled to myself thinking, “beating by rain while in a car

I saw the flood building up on the street, another opportunity to thank God. Thank God, I wasn’t driving, how was I going to drive through the floods.

Someone got down at Adenta Barrier, I quickly pushed to the last end at the back seat near the window, to avoid the rain dripping through the roof but that wasn’t the end of our woes, as the trotro drove through the flood, some water also came into the vehicle through floor.

The driver’s mate was in his all powerful aura, you say “whe” and he will give you a rude feedback.

Eventually, I got to my stop and thankfully hopped off.”

No law Bars MPs from serving on BoG Board – Attah Issah

0

Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Attah Issah, has dismissed claims by the Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Finance Committee that Isaac Adongo’s dual role as Committee Chairman and board member of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) constitutes a conflict of interest.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, May 19, Attah Issah argued that no constitutional or legal provision prohibits a sitting MP, including a committee chairperson, from serving on the board of the central bank.

“It has become so usual for the Minority to raise issues in public. The Honourable Adongo was appointed as the Chairman of the Finance Committee, and we have been conducting business from January up till now.

“There has been no single issue on the concerns raised by the Minority in terms of conflict of interest. All the things that the Minority has said, they could not point to one legal provision that indicates a breach,” he said.

Issah criticised the Minority’s decision to publicise their concerns, noting that such issues should have been handled internally within the Committee.

A former parliamentary aspirant for the Adenta constituency in Accra and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee probing the petitions, asking that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo should be removed from office.

His reason is that, last week, two members of the committee, together with counsel for one of the petitioners, were seen having dinner at a restaurant in Accra where they were overheard discussing matters in the petition over dinner.

His argument is that, it will be good for the committee to be dissolved so that the process does not become a “sham” especially when he claims counsel for one of the petitioners, was overheard discussing the matter with two members of the committee at the restaurant.

For this reason, Ababio Kumi wants President Mahama to dissolve the committee.

“If we have matters of the removal of a Chief Justice, which is a constitutional matter, some of these things must be clearly looked at in order that the process does not become a “sham,” he claimed.

He claimed to have submitted his petition to the presidency on Monday around 4pm [May 19] and indicated that the two members of the five-member committee, which is chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang were seen at the restaurant between 7:30pm and 8:30pm on May 15, 2025.

The petitioner claims that the meeting of the members on the committee and the counsel for one of the petitioners attracted the attention of some other people who were at the restaurant and it excited their curiosity.

He said all the four persons seen at the meeting had critical roles to play in the petitions under consideration asking that the Chief Justice should be removed from office

The committee started its work last week.

 Who is the petitioner?

Alfred Ababio Kumi was an NPP parliamentary aspirant in 2020 and 2024.

What is he asking for?

He claims that he wants to notify President Mahama of some actions of some of the members on the committee investigating the Chief Justice and the lawyer for one of the petitioners.

It is his case that the actions of the members are not good for the proceedings of the committee and that in his view their actions raise concerns about “unfairness” and possible bias.

He claims that in the evening of May 15, 2025, between the hours of 7:30pm and 8:30pm, they were were seen having dinner with counsel for one of the petitioners before the committee at the restaurant at the Airport Residential area.

He gave the status and interests of all the four persons and claimed that the fact that they were overheard discussing matters in relation to the petitions asking for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was not good for the overall process.

0

The United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Ghana, Bell Ribeiro-Addy, has arrived in the country for her first official visit, aimed at strengthening bilateral trade relations and promoting economic cooperation between the two nations.

The four-day mission, which runs from May 19-22, 2025, will take place in Accra and Kumasi and marks a significant milestone since her appointment in January by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Appointed as part of the UK government’s global network of Trade Envoys representing British commercial interests in over 70 countries, Ms Ribeiro-Addy’s visit underscores the UK’s renewed strategic focus on partnerships across Africa, with Ghana as a key ally.

A UK government statement said during her time in the country, Ms Ribeiro-Addy is expected to hold high-level meetings with Ghanaian government officials and stakeholders, including the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson; Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare; and the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak. Engagements will also involve senior government officials, traditional authorities, academic representatives, and UK business leaders operating in Ghana.

The discussions will centre on expanding trade and investment avenues, exploring mutual economic growth strategies, and strengthening cooperation between the UK and Ghana. In Kumasi, the Trade Envoy will tour two major projects supported by UK Export Finance (UKEF): the Kumasi Airport and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital maternity block. These visits are intended to showcase the UK’s continued backing of infrastructure development in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

Ms Ribeiro-Addy will also convene a roundtable with the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, aimed at promoting gender-inclusive economic development and leadership.

“I am honoured to represent the UK in Ghana and look forward to engaging with our Ghanaian partners,” Ms Ribeiro-Addy said. “This visit is an important step in strengthening our trade relations and exploring new avenues for collaboration. I am confident that our discussions will pave the way for a brighter economic future for both our countries.”

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, welcomed the visit, highlighting its importance for both nations. “We are thrilled to welcome Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP to Ghana. Her visit reflects our shared commitment to building stronger international partnerships, promoting global trade, and realising a vision of inclusive prosperity,” she said.

The envoy’s visit is expected to open new doors for investment and collaboration as Ghana and the UK seek to consolidate economic gains and promote inclusive development.

Ghana Museums and Monuments Board marks International Museum Day with free access for students

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), in collaboration with ICOM Ghana, is offering free entry to all basic and senior high school students from May 18 to May 25, 2025, to mark International Museum Day (IMD) 2025.

Celebrated globally on May 18, the 2025 celebration, themed “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” highlights how museums are adapting to societal shifts, driven by technology and environmental changes.

The theme also aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 8, 9, and 11, emphasising museums’ contributions to economic growth, innovation, and sustainable cities.

According to a statement released by the GMMB on May 19, 2025, the body stated that despite limited resources, it continues to promote national unity and cultural preservation through education and community outreach.

“It is disappointing to note that Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), the institution mandated to manage the National Museum has not been fully empowered to achieve the visions of the founding fathers.

“Inspite of this limitation, the GMMB over the years has played crucial role in fostering national unity and preserving the cultural identity of the country through public education, community engagements and access for all,” the statement read.

It continued to say that; “As part of this year’s International Day of Museums, the National Museum grants free admission to all basic and senior high schools between 18th and 25th May 2025 to reiterate the institutions mandate of providing cultural and historic education to the youth, who are the leaders of the future.”

The GMMB also called for increased government support to enhance its role in nation-building.

It also encouraged the public to patronise museums for cultural education and national development.

To museum staff across the country, the statement ended with a heartfelt “Ayekoo.”

GoldBod has significantly contributed to cedi’s stabilisation

Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has attributed the cedi’s recent strong performance in global currency rankings to the strategic interventions of the newly inaugurated Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Speaking at the official inauguration of GoldBod’s Governing Board, Dr Forson declared that the cedi’s appreciation, 16.7% year-to-date as of 13 May 2025, was no coincidence but rather the result of “a robust and coordinated policy framework,” including the operationalisation of GoldBod.

“The GoldBod has already begun to fulfil its object and has contributed immensely to the recent stability of the Ghana Cedi through gold reserve accumulation,” he said.

Dr Forson highlighted how the GoldBod’s establishment was a major policy initiative championed by President John Dramani Mahama as part of a broader effort to reset Ghana’s economy.

“The Ghana GoldBod is a flagship initiative envisioned by His Excellency President Mahama for economic revitalisation,” he stated.

According to him, for too long, the gold trade in Ghana was dominated by fragmentation, unregulated players, and smuggling. This, he explained, denied the country much-needed foreign exchange inflows.

“That chaos has come to an end. The GoldBod is now the sole buyer and assayer of gold, with exclusive authority to license gold trade from Ghana’s small-scale mining sector,” Dr Forson announced.

The finance minister noted that the formalisation of the gold market through GoldBod has brought coherence to what was once a disjointed system involving the Bank of Ghana, PMMC, MIIF, and private entities.

“This paradigm shift will challenge traditional models reliant on old patterns,” Dr Forson remarked, adding that it would lead to more accurate forecasts and stronger foreign exchange buffers.

He stressed that gold was no longer just a mineral resource but a strategic asset.

“As Africa’s leading gold producer, Ghana must now fully harness its gold potential to support economic transformation,” he asserted.

Looking ahead, Dr Forson reaffirmed government’s confidence in GoldBod’s ability to drive sustainable growth and support a stable currency environment.

He encouraged the newly sworn-in Board to maintain the momentum and play their part in delivering economic prosperity.

“I urge the Board to work hard to support and sustain this trajectory,” he said.

“Together, let us help to propel President Mahama’s ongoing reset of Ghana’s economy.”

The finance minister concluded by assuring Ghanaians that with the GoldBod in full operation, the outlook for the cedi and the broader economy remains “robust, sustainable, and transformative.”

No need for load-shedding timetable – Energy Ministry

0

The Ministry of Energy has dismissed recent calls from the Minority in Parliament for the publication of a load management timetable amid ongoing power outages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor’.

In a statement issued on Monday, May 19, the Ministry, through its Spokesperson and Head of Communications, Richmond Rockson, Esq., emphasized that Ghana’s current power generation capacity is adequate to meet national demand, including during peak periods.

“Whilst acknowledging that we inherited an extremely challenged distribution system, the government and the power sector players continue to take the needed steps to permanently resolve these challenges.”

The Ministry further stated that there is no justification for a load-shedding timetable at this time.

“The current power generation capacity is sufficient to meet peak demand; hence there is no basis for a load-shedding timetable at this time,” the Ministry stated.

Reaffirming the government’s dedication to ensuring stable electricity supply, the Ministry assured Ghanaians of its commitment to addressing distribution issues and sustaining consistent power delivery.

“The Government remains committed to the consistent provision of electricity to the Ghanaian people,” the statement said.
